Each wedding is a reflection of the couple being feted. It is always a treat to see how each bride and groom chooses to affirm their commitment to sharing the rest of their lives. Whether they plan to wed on a beach or in a barn, the design details and elements that make the event special for them are what wedding guests will always remember. In this issue of Statesboro Weddings by Statesboro Magazine, we celebrate with three area couples the distinct details that made each wedding their own. Wedding Season is upon us. There are great new trends that we’ll be seeing this year and one of the biggest is a romantic style incorporating items from the past, known as Vintage. The new Vintage wedding theme will feature a more formal style with the use of flowers that are found on the grounds of a grand estate versus the ones that might be found in Grandma’s backyard. The single most popular flower of the spring is going to be the peony with its soft, lush, romantic petals. Hydrangeas and garden roses also are among the most popular flowers in wedding designs. They have an opulent look but still reflect a natural from the garden feeling. The use of burlap and linens for tablescapes at the rehearsal dinner or the wedding reception is a trend that remains strong into the spring and summer of 2013. These natural materials look spectacular incorporated with a large range of themes, from a grand formal wedding in a ballroom to the smaller more intimate outdoor country wedding. The rustic fabrics provide textural contrast against shiny mercury glass, silver containers, or lustrous gold for a touch of richness in holding flowers and candles.

These trends work beautifully here in the South where these magnificent natural materials are found in abundance. When arranged in beautiful heirloom pieces of family silver the local flora, like magnolia and pine, give a spectacular backdrop for a beautiful wedding and reception. Another trend that has been occurring over the past few seasons is the use of longer banquet tables versus individual round tables. The use of linear tables brings wedding guests together, yet also allows the use of multiple flower arrangements flowing down the center of the table versus single, large centerpieces required for each round table. This look works especially well with the vintage theme, because it allows the use of many different containers in numerous heights and sizes to hold flowers and candles in a breathtaking array. When it comes to colors for 2013, two schemes are leading the way. The first is the use of soft, romantic colors, including creams, pastel pinks, soft greens, lavenders, and pale yellows. These colors evoke the feeling of romance and of times gone by. The other scheme is the opposite side of the color spectrum; bold bright colors in combination with neutrals like black, white, creams, and even gray. These combinations can be a stunning study in contrast. When using several bright colors together in the décor, the idea is to group individual colors in large bunches and use those bunches in separate flower arrangements on the tables instead of mixing all the colors in arrangements. Keeping the colors in larger bunches keeps the arrangements from being too busy and allows each color to stand out. Gold is also making a comeback no matter the theme. It works well with both softer colors and many brighter ones. Gold adds an element of richness that can be seen in glamorous design influences from the 1920’s through today’s Hollywood. Another unexpected addition to wedding décor this year is the use of chandeliers in the table scape. These opulent lighting design elements are a great way to add sparkle to an event in an unexpected way. Nothing adds drama like hanging a crystal chandelier from a beautiful Georgia oak. Candles are still one of the best ways to add that soft romantic light to tables, and as I always tell my brides, you can never have too many candles. Pillar candles can be used by themselves indoors or in lanterns and hurricanes outside. Smaller candles, floating in containers or as tea lights scattered along the table, bring reflective

As a florist and wedding planner, I have a few tips for brides as they prepare to start the planning process for their dream wedding. I always tell my brides to bring in pictures of flower arrangements or bouquets when meeting with their florist. Don’t worry if the flowers in the pictures are not the right color or even the right flowers because they will help give the florist an idea of what you are expecting and your chosen style. Another tip is to have your budget in mind so that your planner or florist can help you find the best and most cost effective ways to get the look you want to create. Whenever possible have actual color samples of your bridesmaid’s dresses or any other fabrics that are being used so the florist can help you find the flower colors that are just right for your wedding. When it comes to trying to match colors I always recommend using shades of the same color. Because flower hues will vary, using different types of flowers within the color spectrum you choose will allow the floral designer to incorporate the various colors to bring a depth to the arrangements. Today, wedding design is no longer a matter of simply ordering bouquets, boutonnieres, candelabras and sprays for the front of the church. Today’s bride chooses an overall theme which best represents the couple’s romantic journey. From the rehearsal dinner, to the bridesmaids’ luncheon, from the wedding to the reception, choosing a theme and working with a professional designer or florist guarantees a beautiful outcome worthy of years of wonderful wedding memories.
