The New Year marks a time of renewal and rededication. In this issue of Statesboro Magazine, we bring you three stories that showcase where we came from, who we are, and where we’re headed in the coming years. In a great story of the past, present and future, we celebrate the 70th anniversary of Farmers and Merchants Bank. A Bulloch County institution since 1948, FMB has recently rebranded and remodeled its facilities in anticipation of the next 70 years of being the County’s only locally owned bank. Read about the founding and the mission of one of Bulloch’s top banking companies which started small, but now looms large in the financial landscape of the area. Inside we profile Bill T. Akers, new Farm Bureau president for Bulloch County. “Bill T.,” as he’s known to friends and relations, succeeds long-time president Lannie Lee who passed away early in 2017. Learn about the various experiences during Bill T’s career that have prepared him for this important volunteer leadership role with an organization that serves over 300,000 member families throughout 158 Georgia Farm Bureau offices statewide. There’s something brand new we want to share with you, too. We sat down with Georgia Southern Head Football Coach Chad Lunsford and wife, Tippy to talk about their new adventure as the Eagles’ first couple. While Chad has just been named head coach, he and the family have been in Bulloch County for a collective eight football seasons beginning in 2003, when Chad coached slotbacks for Coach Mike Sewak. After he completes his first season as head coach this year, Lunsford will have coached at GS (and lived in Bulloch County) longer than any other coach except for Erk Russell. After graduating from Stetson University, he earned three degrees from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. In 2004, he retired as pastor of First Baptist Church of Statesboro after serving that congregation for 22 years. He and his wife, Margaret, registrar of Statesboro High School before her retirement in 2005, have two daughters, five grandsons, and one granddaughter. Bill has been very much involved in community life in Statesboro. He is an avid reader and has been a runner since 1973.

Workforce Training & Plant Operations Building Groundbreaking On Wednesday, November 15, 2017, Ogeechee Technical College President Lori Durden, along with state and local dignitaries, broke ground on the new Workforce Training & Plant Operations Building. The new 35,000 sq. ft., $10 million building will be located at 16 Joseph E. Kennedy Boulevard on the campus of Ogeechee Technical College. It is the sixth major building to be constructed on the campus in recent years. In attendance were special guests: Commissioner of the Technical College System of Georgia, Gretchen Corbin; TCSG Board Member, Tommy David; State Senator Jack Hill, Senate Appropriations Committee Chair; State Representatives Jan Tankersley and Jon Burns, House Majority Leader. Also in attendance were Mayor of Statesboro Jan Moore and County Commission Chair Roy Thompson. Existing programs slated to use the new building are those leading to the Electrical Systems Technology and Industrial Electrical Technology diplomas, the Basic Electrical Technician, Commercial Wiring, Photovoltaic Systems Technician, Programmable Control Technician and Basic Mechatronics Specialist certificates, and the Logistics Management and Logistics and Supply Chain Management associate degrees. www.ogeecheetech.edu

Georgia Restaurant Association Honors SEB High Student

Darron Burnette Named 2017 Business Leader of the Year

Brandi Johnson, a senior at Southeast Bulloch High School, was named the state’s Culinary Arts Student of the Year at the Georgia Restaurant Association’s (GR A) annual GR ACE Awards Gala on October 29, in Atlanta. She was recognized due to her selection as the Georgia ProStart Student of the Year by the Hospitality Education Foundation of Georgia (HEFG). Johnson Pictured: Johnson and SEBHS was nominated by SEBHS Culinary Arts Teacher Culinary Arts Team after winning Cynthia Lovett and chosen by HEFG from all the Georgia Prostart Culinary nominees statewide. As an honoree she will be Arts competition in March 2017 featured in the November issue of Restaurant Informer Magazine, as well as other various marketing pieces for GR A and HEFG. Johnson’s passion for culinary arts at SEBHS began after she took home third place in her very first solo culinary arts competition. This compelled her to join the school’s five-person culinary arts team and compete in Georgia ProStart events. The team the advanced to the National Prostart Invitational in Charleston, S.C., where they competed against approximately 400 other student chefs to claim second place. Johnson has taken multiple culinary arts courses within SEBHS’s Hospitality & Tourism career cluster, which includes the Culinary Arts career pathway. SEBHS offers students 17 different career pathways in seven career field clusters as part of Georgia’s Career Technical and Agricultural Education (CTAE) program. Johnson is also employed as a work-based learning student with SEBH’s culinary program.

Darron Burnette, division CEO for Synovus, was named Business Leader of the Year 2017 at the 96th Annual Meeting of the Statesboro-Bulloch Chamber of Commerce held on Thursday, December 14, 2017 at the Nessmith Lane Ball Room. Burnette was honored for his community leadership as past chairman of the Chamber, Secretary for the Georgia Southern Athletic Foundation, treasurer for the Ogeechee Technical College Foundation, and president of the Statesboro Kiwanis Club. Burnette has also served as division chair for the United Way. He has served on the board of directors of East Georgia Regional Medical Center, the Statesboro Police Foundation, Forest Heights Country Club, Keep Bulloch Beautiful, Bulloch Academy and the Coastal Georgia Alzheimer’s Association. For the Alzheimer’s Association, Burnette has chaired two annual fundraising events in Statesboro for the past several years raising over $250,000: the Miriam Burnette Striking Out Alzheimer’s Softball Tournament, named for his late mother who succumbed to the disease, and Rocking Out Alzheimer’s, an annual benefit concert. Burnette is co-chair with Keely Fennell of the Blue Mile Foundation, a revitalization project for the South Main Street/US Highway 301 corridor in downtown Statesboro.

SEBMS receives Bronze Award in Greatest Gains from Gov. Nathan Deal & GOSA Governor Nathan Deal and the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement (GOSA) have recognized Southeast Bulloch Middle School as one of Georgia’s top schools for gains in student achievement. As part of the annual Single Statewide Accountability System (SSAS), GOSA awarded SEBMS a Bronze Award in the Greatest Gains category based on the school’s College and Career-Ready Performance Index (CCRPI). Only 50 school districts in the state had schools honored in this category, and SEBMS is one of only 139 schools to receive the designation. “As a school community, we are elated to receive this recognition,” said Dr. Torian White, principal of SEBMS. GOSA looks at schools’ three-year average Progress Score on the CCRPI to calculate the Greatest Gains awards. “These gains would not be possible without the persistence, diligence, and high expectations of our remarkable teachers, support staff, students and parents,” White added. “I am humbled to work with a group of outstanding professionals who are committed to supporting our students through their middle school journey.” SEBMS had Bulloch County’s highest overall CCRPI score for the past two years (81.9 for FY ’16 and 81.1 for FY ’17). The school’s 2016-2017 performance ranks it locally in the top 10 of 50 schools within the First District Regional Education Service Area (RESA) and in the top 150 of GA’s 587 public middle schools.

Stilson Elementary Receives Walmart Grant Stilson Elementary School has received a $1,500 grant from the Walmart Distribution Center in Statesboro as part of the Walmart Community Grants program. Stilson’s Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Lab teacher, Jenny Hendrix, applied for the grant to help provide additional consumable supplies for her students’ projects. “Our STEM lab gives students hands-on experiences and real world challenges, however, without the help of community members and businesses like Walmart this would not be possible,” Hendrix said. “STEM can be very expensive with over 400 students coming into my lab each week. Last year we used over 250 rolls of masking tape.” Hendrix shared that her students love to build and design projects, but it takes various materials for this to happen. The Walmart Community Grant will be used to purchase items like masking tape, Popsicle sticks, cups, string, duct tape, balloons, and various other building materials. The grant will also be used to expand the STEM Lab’s outdoor garden space where the students are learning the science of agriculture, weather, soil and water quality, and providing their lunchroom with fresh lettuce, radishes, red, white, and purple potatoes and oregano.

AgSouth Farm Credit, ACA, was honored as the 2017 Business of the Year at the 96th Annual Meeting of the Statesboro-Bulloch Chamber of Commerce, held on December 14, 2017, at the Nessmith Lane Ball Room. The Business of the Year was chosen from four Business of the Quarter nominees who were recognized throughout the past year for projecting a positive image, exemplifying quality business and providing a good work environment. Other nominees included Chick-filA, Anderson’s General Store and ServPro of Statesboro. AgSouth Farm Credit, with corporate offices located on South Main Street on the Blue Mile corridor, announced in 2016 that it would be expanding its downtown footprint and relocating regional offices, accounting and human resources to a new building to open in 2018 along East Vine Street. The new campus will feature pedestrian walkways and green space, adding 20 new employees to the area. 70 Years of Success Farmers & Merchants Celebrates Milestone

When local attorney Gerald Edenfield was just a lad, he asked H. M. Robertson, Jr., the president of Farmers & Merchants Bank of Brooklet from 1966 – 1973, for a loan to purchase livestock for his 4-H project. Edenfield, now a FMB director, remembers Robertson giving him the money for some pigs and when he went back to repay the loan at the end of the year, “the lady didn’t know me, so I pulled out my grade school picture and said, ‘This is me!’” That memory of the investment Robertson made in young Edenfield is part of the legacy of one of Bulloch County’s strongest banks; the only locally owned financial institution in the County today, celebrating 70 years of successful operations in 2018. A news story in the October 30, 1947 issue of the Bulloch Times stated, “First steps toward the organization of a new chartered bank for Brooklet were taken at a meeting Tuesday night, when officers were selected, a name chosen, and the capital stock subscribed. The name of the new bank will be Farmers and Merchants Bank; capital stock will be $25,000; surplus subscribed, $5,000; directors Floyd A. Akins, T. E. Davis, W. O. Denmark, Glenn Harper, J. L. Minick, H. M. Robertson, Jr., and J. W. Wyatt. From the board T. E. When Bulloch County native Bill T. Akers was 32-years-old in 1992, he was elected as the youngest member of the Bulloch County Farm Bureau board of directors. He grew up on Donaldson Street in Statesboro and spent many hours of his childhood from 1965 – 1975, with his father at the family store – Statesboro Farm Supply. In 1960, Bill Sr., bought a farm in Clito and as soon as Bill T. was old enough, he shadowed his father every day to work and to the farm. Bill T.’s grandfather Thompson owned Bulloch Tractor Company on West Main Street. He grew up surrounded by farming, but chose a career in state government and has been with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) since 1990. Last year when long-time Bulloch Farm Bureau president Lannie Lee passed away, Bill T. was elected as Lee’s successor. Accepting the volunteer position was a natural thing for Akers, a move that he says brought him “back to his roots.” Never far from those “roots,” Bill T. graduated from Bulloch Academy in 1978. “I liked tractors, farming and electronics,” he stated. He started out working for Dell’s TV as a service technician. He spent several years in sales until 1989 when he got a job as a tower operator with the Georgia Forestry Commission. When the funds for his position were cut by then governor Zell Miller the following year, Akers applied for a job as a crime lab van driver with the GBI, a position held until 1995, when he became a technician in the GBI Coastal Regional Crime Lab in Savannah. “After losing my forestry job, I went to the state patrol to talk to some friends there about getting a job,” said Akers. He was told there was a “body fetching” job and through that he met Charles Sikes, former Special Agent in Charge for Region 5. “He has been a dear friend and mentor,” Akers said.

Back to His Roots In July of 1992, Bill T. married Lisa Deal, also a Bulloch County native, and they bought a 36-acre farm of their own in the Middleground community. “Our Middleground neighbors J.W. and Joanna Jones brought Lisa and I into the Middleground community,” said Akers. “He was like a second grandfather to me and was a Farm Bureau board member. He invited me to serve on the board as a younger person; at the time the youngest. I served many years with Mr. J. W., I remember driving him to the state convention on Jekyll.” Driving for older Farm Bureau board members is something Bill T. has been doing for years. When Lannie Lee was president, from age 86 to 96, Bill T. served as vice president and accompanied Lee to many state and national conventions. Akers drove Lee to state meetings, but visited Hawaii, Disney World, San Diego and San Antonio with Lee attending American Farm Bureau conventions. “I couldn’t have asked for a better friend and mentor,” said Akers. “Mr. Lannie taught me many things. He always wanted to visit other counties to see what they were doing so we could gather ideas to make Bulloch better. He was proud of Bulloch County’s reputation as a place with many master farmers. Mr. Lannie would always say, ‘That’s God’s country!’ when talking about home. I hope I can fill his shoes.” Akers new responsibilities will include maintenance and upkeep of the Farm Bureau offices on Northside Drive. “We want to provide the best offices for folks to sell insurance,” he said. “User friendly space.” Akers will also oversee many programs throughout the year to highlight the role of agriculture in the County and help bring about greater community awareness and education for area children. “Jane Cason, Jamie Cromley and Haley Brannen organize a day trip for 50 – 60 kids from the Boys & Girls Club and Camp Cherokee to a Bulloch County farm to learn about cattle, chickens, row crops and produce. They are then treated to pizza,” said Akers. “We like to think outside the box in developing programs,” said Akers. “We have a beef program each year and Ellis Meats sponsors the event and cooks hamburgers. The Hugh Marsh family and Dairy Queen sponsor our dairy program. Bobby Colson allows us to tour his Bee Museum. We would like to develop a program for each month.” Bulloch County Farm Bureau also works closely with the Georgia Southern Botanic Garden actively participating in assisting with the Children’s Garden.

There are over 200 members of Bulloch County Farm Bureau and a board is elected every two years, with officers elected every year. The organization is all volunteer. Like many farmers, Akers is up each day at 3:00 a.m. to start work. He arrives at his Farm Bureau office and works until 4:45 a.m., when he is on the road to his GBI job in Savannah. Many evenings are spent at programs with Farm Bureau and Akers other interests, including the Peace Officers Association of Georgia, whose annual convention he helps organize each year, and the 10 – 12 Farm Bureau meetings that he attends annually around the state. Akers is also a member of the Bulloch County Historical Society. The Farm Bureau board of directors assists Akers in developing programming and in heading committees such as the Young Farmers and Women’s Leadership committees. Brooklet farmer David Cromley serves as vice president. Cromley and wife Jamie previously served as chairs of the Young Farmer Committee for Georgia Farm Bureau, a position which holds a seat on the state board. Jane and Bobby Joe Cason also serve as board members and Jane is head of the Women’s Leadership committee. Board member Ryan Brannen of Register heads the Young Farmers for Bulloch County. Charles Finch serves as secretary/treasurer. Other active board members include Freddie Blitch, Elliot Marsh and David Rushing. The critical thinking training Akers received in the GBI has been helpful in his role at Farm Bureau. “To serve so many interests, I have to be highly organized,” said Akers. It’s fitting that he carries around files that he may need in three-ring binders in a milk crate. “I like to give it all I got,” he said. “I have to do my very best in order to meet the many deadlines.” Akers continues to be involved in his own farm and in the farm his father bought in Clito many years ago, which he now shares with sisters Esther and Lillian. He manages 175 acres which are leased to row crops, but continues to do soil samples and keeps up with conservation efforts on the farms. Akers is eligible for retirement from the GBI in five years and hopes to stay with Farm Bureau long after he retires. But it’s not something Akers sees himself doing for 30 or 40 years. “I started last year as president at 56. Mr. Lannie was 96 when he passed,” said Akers. “My goal is to do the best I can do, then to pass it on. I had a great foundation in serving Farm Bureau, and I hope I can provide that for our young farmers.” S

Chad & Tippy Lunsford When Eagle head football coach Chad Lunsford was chosen in December of 2017 to lead the team he had worked for through five head coaches, he was realizing his dream and goal of one day coaching at the college level. A dream that started long before he began his career at Georgia Southern in 2013 under Coach Jeff Monken. Lunsford’s dream started on the much smaller campus of Georgia College in Milledgeville, one day when he was watching flag football outside his dorm window. He happened to spy Tiffany “Tippy” Hyde on the field. “I was playing flag football and practicing outside his dorm,” said Tippy. “I was the quarterback.” According to Tippy, Lunsford approached her one day with admiration for her athleticism. “I was in great condition then, and he asked if he could touch my abs,” said Tippy. Tippy was a freshman majoring in biology, and Chad, a sophomore majoring in biology and math. He started doing videography for the football team at nearby Georgia Military Academy to help him pay his way through school. The job allowed him to live and eat for free at GMA, while finishing classes at Georgia College. Eventually he moved onto the field in a coaching position and got paid for his work. “He will tell you we met at a dance club,” Tippy said. “But we are not bar hoppers or night people, we are morning folks.” She chose biology as a major because she was good at it and passionate about it. He wanted something to fall back on. His real dream was college level coaching. He went on to attain a Masters in sports management. They married after college and together have been to seven schools: App State, Georgia Southern (under Mike Sewak from 2003 – 2006), Griffin High School (for one year), back to Georgia Military, Auburn (for four years), then back to Georgia Southern for six seasons, the longest they have stayed in one place. Tippy taught biology at Statesboro High School for three years during their first stay in Statesboro, and one year at Griffin before they were able to start a family. She’s been back at SHS for one year. “It took 3.5 years for us to have Sophie,” said Tippy. “I underwent fertility treatments and became a stay-at-home Mom. My goal was to be a wife and mother, that’s why I chose a teaching career. I thought it would be a great career with children.” 28 • Statesboro Magazine

The Lunsford didn’t think they would be able to have more children, but were blessed when son Rhett came along in sixteen months. Rhett was followed by baby Clay. “We were told Clay had some genetic problems,” Tippy shared. “I carried him full term, and after he was born, he was not able to sustain life. But, he taught us a lot about life.” “As a family he brought us closer to God,” she said. “After Clay, I said, ‘Not again!’ Then two years later we were blessed with Josie Belle, our rainbow baby. She brings crazy happiness to our family. She is the last one and a lot of joy.” Sophie is now ten-years-old, Rhett, nine, and Josie Belle, six. They are all students at Julia P. Bryant Elementary, which for the time being makes morning drop-off easy. Not so easy for their afternoons, however. Sophie is a budding actress/ artist active in the Averitt Center for the Arts Youth Theater program, recently performing in their production of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. She also enjoys drawing and painting. She is a member of a 10 & under traveling softball team. Rhett loves to watch sports and he excels at basketball and chess. He got into basketball after attaining a black belt in karate and he plays on the JPB Chess Team. Josie Belle started kindergarten this year and loves acting in roles for children in plays directed by Eddie Frazier with theater students at SHS. “I asked Josie Belle what she wanted to sign up for this year after school,” said Tippy. “She said nap time.” It seems she has discovered that kindergarten doesn’t have a nap time like preschool. The Lunsfords have been in Statesboro since 2013 when Chad came back to coach wide receivers at Georgia Southern under Coach Jeff Monken. He has been a solid part of the Eagle coaching staff through Monken, Fritz, McGee and Summers. How has he managed to survive five head coaching changes and still remain focused on his goal of one day being head coach of a college program? “I survived by my faith,” Lunsford said. “I believe I’m here for a purpose. I haven’t always known what that purpose is, but I always find out the reason for me being at Georgia Southern each time.” One of Lunsford’s favorite scriptures is Isaiah 40:31 (KJV), “But they

Chad & Tippy Lunsford that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” That faith has led him to see that the advantage of serving under several head coaches is the amount of knowledge gained from each experience. When Lunsford coached slotbacks under Mike Sewak from 2003-2006, “I was getting the base of my option knowledge,” he said. From Jeff Monken he developed an understanding of how to create a winning culture: “We expect to win and this is how we’re going to do it,” he said. From Willie Fritz, Lunsford gained knowledge in “leadership, organization and how to get the most out of people - both players and coaches.” Lunsford was asked to join Fritz when he left to take the head coaching position at Tulane, but decided to stay with the Eagles. He loves Statesboro, he’s from Georgia, and he is at home in Paulson Stadium. When Summers was chosen as head coach, it made sense to work with recruiting coordinator Lunsford in selecting a new class of players for the 2016 season, with only three weeks left until national signing day. In early 2017, Lunsford was named Assistant Head Coach by Summers in recognition of his work in coaching wide receivers, tight ends, special teams and in serving as recruiting coordinator. Summers was quoted as saying, “He is very deserving of this opportunity we’re excited about his leadership, taking over more of the team aspect.” Neither Summers, nor Lunsford expected that he would be leading the Eagles into the 2018 season. “I learned from Coach Summers a desire to do right by the players,” said Lundford. That’s a purpose and a tradition, that Lunsford will carry forward as Georgia Southern’s head coach. “There’s a feeling you get as a player at Georgia Southern. It’s tied to the traditions. The yellow bus ride and the song. Eagle Creek. Erk Russell. A Different ‘Our:’ Georgia Southern Consolidation Expands its Reach

This new year brings with it a new Georgia Southern University. As of Jan. 1, Georgia Southern now has three vibrant campuses in Statesboro, Savannah and Hinesville, and its student population of more than 27,000 makes it the fourth largest university in Georgia. And while the monumental task of consolidation with Armstrong State University took several months of work from administration, faculty and staff from both institutions, for Statesboro residents, it probably doesn’t look like

much has changed. In reality, however, the new Georgia Southern University has expanded its reach, becoming a truly regional University that will have long-term impact on economic development in Southeast Georgia. “As a regional University, Georgia Southern will not only meet the educational needs of a growing student population, it will meet dire workforce needs in Southeast Georgia and around the entire state,” said Trip Addison, Vice President for University Advance-

ment and External Affairs. “Our graduates will be the driving force behind economic expansion in our region.” In this region, the top five jobs requiring an associate degree or higher, ranked by annual growth, include registered nurses, general/operations managers, postsecondary teachers, accountants/auditors and aerospace engineers. With its greater resources and options for students, Georgia Southern will be in an even better position to focus not only on student success, but also on expanding programs to meet market demand. In addition, the new University will expand its economic impact on the region to more than $1 billion, and will work with regional businesses and industries as an intellectual catalyst to drive innovation and growth. “I think that anything that grows the University and increases its exposure and its position and its programs and all those things — anything that’s good for Georgia Southern is good for Statesboro, Bulloch County and the region,” said Benjy Thompson, CEO of the Development Authority of Bulloch County. “And then, it’s incumbent upon us who do economic development for a living to find the right way to leverage those resources.” For Thompson, leveraging resources both in Statesboro and Savannah is not a new concept. He regularly works with Savannah in his efforts to recruit business to the area, and constantly travels outside Statesboro, working with other communities and representatives from the state. He says Georgia Southern is rooted in Statesboro, and continues to develop, build and expand in Statesboro — all of which signal good things for area residents. And while area natives will always claim the University as “ours,” he says “our” will take on a new and greater meaning. “‘Our’ is a different ‘our,’” said Thompson. “‘Our,’ now, is Statesboro and Savannah. So we’re in it together, and I think it’s real easy for me to go into a room with Savannah Economic Development people and talk about Georgia Southern and the resources it provides, and both of us have ownership of Georgia Southern. “They have pitched Georgia Southern before the consolidation as their University. Now they can do it formally. We’ve pitched Savannah as part of who we are, and now we can do it formally. So I think it’s a good thing for economic development.” January/February 2018 • 67

M Change for the Better Most of us don’t like change. We like for things to be constant and the same. There is a part of our deeper selves that welcomes change, even seeks it, but there is another part that is frightened by it and does what it can to avoid it. The standard typewriter/computer keyboard is a good example. Have you ever noticed where the most frequently used keys are located? They’re placed as far apart as possible. The original purpose of this arrangement was to slow down typing speed. Keys on the machines of the 1800s used to jam if the typist went too fast. Around 1950 a new simplified keyboard was developed where the most frequently used keys were located in the home row and the right hand did more of the work than the left. Tests showed that typists could increase their speed up to five times with no increase in errors. But the vast majority of the typists said, “No! Leave it like it is!” And so we labor on a keyboard designed

to be inefficient. Why? Because we don’t like change. Change is difficult but it is possible. People can change and do change. It usually happens when it is too painful for us to remain as we are. There are thousands of members of Alcoholics Anonymous who will tell you that it is possible to change. In Akron, Ohio, you can visit an unpretentious house where AA got its start back in 1935. Two men used to sit around a table in that little house drinking coffee and talking, committed to keeping each other sober. Though AA got off to a very slow start it gradually grew into an international organization that has helped countless numbers of individuals achieve and maintain sobriety. Hundreds of thousands of people can tell you that change is possible. Psychologists tell us we are aided in making changes when we can visualize what the changes would look like. That mental image

of the results of change where you can see yourself after changes take place will guide you in making better choices. I want someone to draw a picture of me without my enlarged stomach. I have what retired Presbyterian pastor John Bressler calls “Furniture Disease” - my chest has fallen into my drawers. If I had a picture of myself with those heavy pounds removed, and I placed it next to my big chair in our family room where I could see it throughout the day, especially while reading or watching ball games in the evenings, I just might lose those extra pounds. We’ll see. Maybe we should start saying what Earl Weaver, former manager of the Baltimore Orioles used to say. He would charge at the umpire when he felt he had made a bad call and yell, “Are you gonna get any better, or is this it?” Maybe God is asking us the same question. Maybe we should ask ourselves that question, too. January/February 2018 • 69

Midnight Vespers It’s one in the morning. The all-night diner is empty. Torrents of rain fill the desolate parking lot. I am beat. Left early this morning and had not let up, thinking I would make it from there to there. Come this noon in a small country church I have been asked to provide a eulogy for Uncle Delmar. Three more hours faced me to my Aunt Git’s home. Uncle Del had left life quickly as he sat under the elm in their back yard drinking a cold one admiring the hour he had just spent mowing the long sweep of the back lawn. Aunt Git thought her man of 54 years had nodded off like he usually did. Not on this spring afternoon. He had just stopped breathing. Heart arrest was the coroner’s confirmation. “Sorry about your loss,” commented Henry, the diner’s night shift cook. He walked over, leaned into the counter and asked, “You

been figuring on what ya gonna say?” “Frankly, I have not had time to put something together, what with has passing so quickly.” I responded. Henry walked to the fountain and drank a glass of water. He stood there looking into the wall of mirrors. Slowly wiping his hands on his apron he returned to his spot and said simply, “Pick out the remembering dear to your heart.” An air of salvation took hold of the counter and became my altar. Now twenty-four hours later, I am returning home from bidding my Uncle Delmar “goodbye, for now.” And I had remembered Henry’s words…”tell your stories that folks can really see.” I remembered to this day, Jennings my best friend from across the street and I sneaking two of Uncle Del’s Lucky Strikes™ and lighting those up behind Aunt Git’s wash house.

About two big puffs were all we could take. Walking into the small den sat Uncle Delmar reading the paper. He greeted us warmly and said, “You boys come over and sit by me and let’s have a smoke. I think you will really enjoy it.” He made us suck and really inhale until there was nothing left but butts, all the while smiling with, “Isn’t this just so good.” He said not a word when Jennings and I returned from the toilet after puking our guts out. Uncle Delmar was just twenty-one when he was sitting at the bar taking a break from a long day at the mill. Across the lounge one friend was showing another friend his new pistol. Suddenly, an explosion filled the lounge as Uncle Del became the victim of the errant bullet. And for the rest of his life, at least once a month, Uncle Del suffered from the onslaught of the bullet’s angered presence. During those rages he would walk down into Granny’s garden and sit sobbing, drinking whiskey. I can still hear those cries. In high school Uncle Del was a superior baseball catcher. To the point scouts filled the stadium his senior year. He was signed to 1-A ball for a quality start of the dream of playing for the Philadelphia Athletics. The next fall his Camelot career ended with the bullet. When I was sixteen and had a decent pitching arm, now and then, Uncle Del ambered into the back yard and remarked, “Rickie show me what you got.” And there in my field of dreams, he taught me how to throw a curve, slider and fast ball. He never attended church but he did read his Bible every night. During my summermonth’s visits, he would hold my hands as he heard my prayers. Aunty Git would remind me now and then my Uncle Del was a “man of God and there would be a place in heaven for him.” Uncle Del was a skilled tool/dye professional. His sight of precision and symmetry was brilliant. For my sixteenth birthday his gift was a gold cross which to this day brings light to my life. An original. “Allow it to bless you. Rickie.” Now I am headed home. It is mid-afternoon as I pull into the diner’s parking lot to just sit. For me this eatery would remain my holy chamber. The counter my altar; Henry my disciple who blessed me with his thoughts about remembering my Uncle Del. “Do it with sacred stories,” Henry called out as I walked into the rain. And I did!
