Rockin’ Out for Alzheimer’s Concert Breaks Record

The Third Annual Rockin’ Out for Alzheimer’s Concert featuring Departure, a Journey tribute band, had record attendance this year with 722 seats being sold at Georgia Southern’s Performing Arts Center. A generous audience, along with a donation of $1,525 from the Statesboro Police Department, helped to raise over $35,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association. Darron Burnette, President of Sea Island Bank and Chandler Dennard, Assistant Head of School at Bulloch Academy, have co-chaired this event from its inception and over the years the committee has grown, sponsorships have increased, and support has f lourished for this concert. The event has a special place in Burnette’s heart in that his mother was diagnosed with the disease in 2006 and subsequently passed away in 2012. He and Dennard established a memorial concert to create awareness about Alzheimer’s being the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. “Our community has united in so many ways to make this a great event. It’s a win-win situation for everyone. Rockin’ Out is a night out to enjoy great entertainment and, at the same time, raise money for an important cause.” said Dennard.

EGRMC Auxiliary Hosts Southeast District Council’s Annual Meeting The East Georgia Regional Medical Center Auxiliary hosted 13 hospitals of the Council on Auxiliaries/Volunteers for the Southeast District’s Annual Meeting on March the 11th at the Nessmith-Lane Conference Center. Mayor Jan J. Moore and EGRMC CEO Bob Bigley welcomed the attendees. The Keynote Speaker was Rev. Dr. Bill Perry. EGRMC has 68 volunteers whose mission is to provide quality volunteer services with compassion and care for patients, their families and visitors, and, through outreach, to enhance the well-being of our community. 10 • Statesboro Magazine

Robert Lloyd, an eighth-grade student at Langston Chapel Middle School, was recently selected as one of the state’s best student percussionists by the Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA) by receiving the honor of First Chair in one of two middle school-level All-State Bands. Lloyd went through a rigorous audition process on three separate instruments against the best percussionists from around the state, and his score was one of the highest. He rehearsed and performed with the All-State Band at the Classic Center in Athens, and worked with nationally recognized conductor, Robert Herrings, from Texas.

Statesboro Bank to Open Soon Officers of the Glennville Bank announce the summer 2015 opening of the Statesboro Bank on Savannah Avenue. Renovations have begun on an historic building at 203 Savannah Avenue which will be the home of the 1,960 sq. ft. location at the corner of Zetterower Avenue. Georgia Southern Sigma Nu Raises Over $10,000 for M.S. The Sigma Nu Fraternity chapter at Georgia Southern University recently raised over $10,000 for Multiple Sclerosis research to benefit fellow Georgians. In their Third Annual ∑ ND MS Benefit Concert, the chapter had a record attendance of over 300 people at the Sigma Nu Fraternity house. Local bands “Francis Marion and the Crocodiles” and “Archibald Bulloch and the Flying Ebolas” were featured. A Low Country Boil was served to all ∑ND MS Benefit Concert attendees. The first annual ∑ND MS Benefit Concert, held in 2012, was the idea of Chapter Commander Brian Griffin who created the concept as a way to honor his father, Dr. Charles Griffin, also a Sigma Nu, diagnosed with M.S. over 20 years ago. To date the event has raised over $21,000 for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and was designated as Georgia Southern University’s “Most Outstanding Charitable Fundraiser of the Year” in 2012-13. Dr. Dorvilus, Dr. Hathaway, and Dr. Penn Written by Jenny Starling Foss There’s a 25-foot-long tube inside our bodies that processes the foods we eat. The gastro system or “GI track,” along with the liver, pancreas, and gallbladder, make up the parts of our bodies which break down and absorb the foods we eat, plus what we drink, so the nutrients can be transported to the blood system and delivered to our cells as nourishment. In our culture, a good deal of attention is paid to eating a healthy diet and to eliminating from our diet that which causes “stomach” problems. Gluten-free, low-fat, high-fiber, vitamin-fortified, probiotic – all familiar and popular terms used to describe foods which promote good digestion and good health. A well-balanced diet plays an important role in keeping the digestive track running smoothly and in preventing or relieving uncomfortable symptoms. A GI system in good digestive health will have appropriate nutrient absorption, intestinal motility, immune function, and a balanced microbiota or group of “good” micro-organisms that aid in digestion. Most people with good digestive health do not regularly experience symptoms like abdominal pain, heartburn, constipation, diarrhea, bloating and nausea. There are many over-the-counter remedies for the occasional occurrence of digestive ailments like these. For cases of greater concern, patients can see a specialist with extensive training in diseases of the digestive track – a gastroenterologist. Gastroenterology is the study of the normal function and diseases of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts and liver. Gastroenterologists have a detailed understanding of the normal action (physiology) of the gastrointestinal organs including the movement of material through the stomach and intestine (motility), the digestion and absorption of nutrients into the body, removal of waste from the system, and the function of the liver as a digestive organ. It includes common and important conditions such as colon polyps and cancer, hepatitis, gastro esophageal reflux (heartburn), diverticulitis, peptic ulcer disease, colitis, gallbladder and biliary tract disease, nutritional problems, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), and pancreatitis. In essence, all normal activity and diseases of the digestive system are covered by this specialty. New developments in technology advance treatment and provide patients with quicker diagnoses and less invasive treatment. Two of the most common tools are colonoscopy, for examination of the large intestine, and endoscopy, for examination of the upper digestive track and the stomach or abdomen. A doctor must complete many additional years of rigorous training to master the diagnostic tools of gastroenterology. Statesboro is fortunate to have three such specialists in individual practices affiliated with East Georgia Regional Medical Center: Dr. Patrick Dorvilus of Access Gastroenterology, Dr. Joseph Hathaway of Gastroenterology Institute, and Dr. Daniel Eli Penn of East Georgia Gastroenterology Center. These specially trained and certified doctors treat patients daily in the Endoscopy suite at EGRMC and are dedicated to providing the latest available technology for diagnosis and treatment, along with a superior level of patient care. Patrick Dorvilus, MD Access Gastroenterology Originally, Bronx, NY, native, Dr. Patrick Dorvilus was drawn to Orthopedics as a medical specialty. Accepted into an accelerated program for students based on academic achievements, examination, and extra-curricular activities, he went from high school graduation to M.D. in seven years based on the recommendation of his high school chemistry teacher. In addition to medical school, Dr. Dorvilus nurtured an artistic side. He developed a comic strip while in college titled, “Beyond Words,” and spent his free time creatively painting scenes of the Caribbean and its people, a hobby he still enjoys. After entering medical school, he decided not to pursue Orthopedics and became more interested in a career path with the opportunity to talk to patients and help them figure out what was wrong. He liked being a “detective” and the problem solving aspects presented by a specialty in Gastroenterology. Dr. Dorvilus completed his medical education at New York University, an internship at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, and his residency at Yale University. He also completed a fellowship in Gastroenterology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. It was while on the clinical faculty of the University of Connecticut at Hartford, where he held a faculty position teaching future gastroenterologists, that he heard of Statesboro. “I noticed that students would move to the South because of a lesser concentration of doctors, especially in rural areas,” he said. He had calls from associates in Atlanta affiliated with Emory, but while Dr. Dorvilus enjoyed the pace of big city life, he wanted to live close to his practice, and to avoid the traffic and congestion of a large metropolitan area. He heard about opportunities in Statesboro and visited twice at the urging of EGRMC Administrator Bob Bigley. “I liked Statesboro’s proximity to Savannah, which, coincidentally, is a sister city of Saint-Martin where my parents were born. I had been there to visit family, and I enjoyed the historical ties to my own culture,” he said.

Right after Dr. Dorvilus arrived in Statesboro, he related, “I went to an antique shop and saw a coin minted in Haiti to commemorate soldiers sent to Savannah. I felt like it was karma.” He’s been here for four years and has recently opened a new practice location – Access Gastroenterology – at the corner of Zetterower and Savannah Avenues. When asked why he chose downtown, Dr. Dorvilus said, “I like to be close to a diverse business population. I enjoy being around the action and the atmosphere. It lends itself to a more interesting practice scenario. I can grab a coffee next door, or watch a show on the way home, plus it supports downtown development.” Dr. Dorvilus’ philosophy in practicing medicine centers on patient care. “I believe in treating others as if they were members of my own family,” he stated. “I am very compulsive about looking everywhere to make sure nothing is missed.” “I also believe that everyone is an important individual. I think it is only ethical to treat everyone with dignity and respect,” he said. The most challenging aspect for Dr. Dorvilus is “bringing what I have learned at the University level here. I have no students or fellows to teach; no research level as in a large medical community. That challenges me to bring it here.” One of the ways he is bringing it here is by working with SCAD students and Georgia Southern engineering students on a synergy of engineering and the arts. “The call to advance is the only way to not remain stagnant,” he shared. “I must feed my creative side, too.” In addition, Dr. Dorvilus has been awarded a clinical assistant professorship at the Medical College of Georgia, where he will be instructing medical students. “Seeing the fruits of my labor ripen and come to fruition is very rewarding,” he said. But, the greatest reward is “being accepted and respected by my peers and colleagues. I see that by referrals and by patients talking about me. By the fact that I’m doing well here.”

On the wall inside the offices of the Gastroenterology Institute hangs a picture taken on July 1, 2010 of Dr. Hathaway and Tina, wife and practice manager, with hardhats on and shovels in hand, breaking ground on their dream, a gastroenterology practice for residents of Statesboro, at that time a community underserved by the specialty. After nine years of practicing in Savannah at the Center for Digestive and Liver Health, a large practice with six partners, Dr. Hathaway and his wife shared the dream of starting their own practice in Statesboro. “We came to start a practice that is ‘old school,’ where the patient is first,” he said. Concentrating on the patient’s view was a natural perspective for Dr. Hathaway, having been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in the ninth grade. After having his colon removed while in college, his personal experience “drove me into the field,” he shared. A cum laude graduate of Hiram College in Ohio, Dr. Hathaway entered the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, graduating in 1995, going on to complete his residency in Internal Medicine in 1998, and a fellowship in Gastroenterology in 2001, at the University of North Carolina Hospitals in Chapel Hill. In 2001, Dr. Hathaway began practicing in Savannah and began his tenure as Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at Mercer University Medical Center, a position he continues to hold. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, a Diplomat in Gastroenterology. “We have given careful consideration to how we treat our patients,” Dr. Hathaway stated. “We established our practice from a nursing perspective where we put great emphasis on the patient’s overall experience,” he said. “We make it so appointments are easy. If you need an appointment now, you can make it on-line at our website. We have an ease of flow, we limit paperwork, and we try to be very accommodating.” The practice slogan is “great people deserve great care,” and at the Gastroenterology Institute “there are no VIP patients, everyone is important,” he related. Dr. Hathaway’s commitment to improving

the patient’s experience and level of care has been demonstrated by the advances in treatment he has brought to the area. “We have been able to bring ERCP, diagnostics and treatment for the bile duct system and the pancreas that were not done here before,” he stated. “We were able to bring pH monitoring and radio frequency ablation. We really want to deliver the highest quality of compassionate care.” Another of the advancements in diagnostics for our area is Capsule Endoscopy. Patients swallow a capsule size camera that sends images to a recorder worn outside the body as it travels through the digestive track. An advanced diagnostic tool reminiscent of the science fiction movie, “Fantastic Voyage.” “We do lots of different procedures at East Georgia in the Endoscopy suite,” Dr. Hathaway said, “The GI track is just fascinating. Every day there is something different to explore.” Dr. Hathaway also appreciates the support he gets from the administration and staff of EGRMC. “They are very supportive of my practice and of investing in the latest in diagnostic and treatment tools.” “Our practice is committed to the area,” he continued, “we are excited about the potential for growth and are working on exciting things.” Down the road, Dr. Hathaway hopes to get a little more into the area of nutrition and weight loss. “I think this is one way to have a big impact on patients with other problems including obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.” he said. New things on the horizon also include advanced treatment for hepatitis C. “The FDA has approved the first combination pill, Harvoni, to treat the disease,” stated Dr. Hathaway. “In trials Harvoni was so effective that it cured hepatitis C after three months of treatment in over 90% of patients who took it. The sample treatments have shown no side effects. This development has been very exciting this past year.” Dr. Hathaway continued, “There’s a lot going on in healthcare and at the end of the day I’m very, very happy, blessed, and fortunate to have been given the opportunity to build a practice with my wife in Statesboro. East Georgia Gastroenterology Center Dr. Eli Penn is a self-described Internist at heart. He counts among the rewards of being a Gastroenterologist the ability to “think doing medicine.” With influence from his dad, Dr. Chuck Penn, a general surgeon at Ft. Stewart, Dr. Penn entered medical school and became fascinated with the Internist’s ability to treat so many facets of the digestive system. “There’s such a mix of procedures, treatments and diagnostics,” he said. A graduate of Wake Forest University, he earned his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, where he met his wife, Board Certified Pediatrician Dr. Elizabeth Penn, also a Statesboro physician, practicing at Mama Doc Pediatrics. After medical school, Dr. Penn completed his residency at MUSC and a fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Which means after becoming an M.D. he trained for another six years to become board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology/Hepatology. (Hepatology is the branch of internal medicine concerned with the function and diseases of the liver). During Dr. Penn’s training at UF, he worked with Dr. Robb Hawes, a leading physician in research and development in the area of Therapeutic Endoscopy. Dr. Hawes is credited with founding the Endoscopic Ultrasound Center (EUS) at Indiana University and extensive research in the area of pancreaticobiliary endoscopy. He also established a multi-modality treatment center for the non-operative management of gallstones. He has been a pioneer in developing a new paradigm in minimally invasive surgery called NOTES (natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery). Other than his father, Dr. Penn credits Dr. Hawes with having the greatest influence on his medical career. That influence is manifested in Dr. Penn’s whole approach to patients. “I like to talk to my patients and spend time with them to make them feel really comfortable,” he said. “Some gastroenterologists – if your scope has no answer – send you back to your primary physician. We keep going until we find the answer.” With a practice located in EGRMC’s Physician’s Building, Dr. Penn especially enjoys the immediate access this provides for his patients to procedures in the Endoscopy suite.

The close proximity saves days of waiting for patients on diagnostics and treatment. “At UF, if you were diagnosed with esophageal cancer, it was usually two weeks to go through the process. Here it’s three days,” he said. “From the biopsy and detection to staging and forming a treatment plan, we can do it all very rapidly here.” Dr. Penn also serves on the Tumor Board at East Georgia providing his expertise in the treatment of cancer of the esophagus, colon, and any other area of the gastro system that is affected. “Short of pancreatic surgery, everything here we can do as well or better than larger hospitals,” he said. Dr. Penn is dedicated to bringing the best available treatment and diagnostic tools to the area and is excited about developments in the diagnosis and treatment of gastro diseases. Among his special skills he cites endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), interventional endoscopy, pancreatic diseases, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohns Disease and Ulcerative Colitis), colon cancer prevention and Barrett’s Esophagus. “The EUS, (endoscopic ultrasound), sees minute things in incredible detail,” he stated. In EUS a small ultrasound transducer is installed on the tip of the endoscope. By inserting the endoscope into the upper or the lower digestive tract the doctor can obtain high quality ultrasound images of the organs inside the body. This level of specialty enforces the need for patients to seek out the high quality care that is available in the area, instead of having procedures done by doctors not board certified in gastroenterology. “Statistics show that practitioners who perform a colonoscopy without the proper training only catch 25% of the abnormal detections in males, and 20% in females,” said Dr. Penn. “Would you rather go to a doctor who does 50 colonoscopies a year, or one who does 1,000?” he asked. “The better outcomes come from the better trained specialists.” “There was a period 10 years ago when we didn’t have the availability of trained specialists in the area,” he stated. Right in our own backyard runs one of the last alluvial undammed rivers in Georgia. We don’t even think of it most of the time, like we don’t think of the air or the sky, we just know it’s there. For us it begins right below Rocky Ford and its iced-tea colored water meanders down the eastern border of Bulloch County to form the boundaries between Screven and Effingham. For us it ends at the Bryan County Line right below the Steel Bridge. Most of us have fished or swum or canoed it. We’ve played on her sandbars, we’ve floated downstream on inner-tubes, and some of us have even walked parts of it when the water was too low to carry us. Our river is not only untamed by man’s mechanizations, she is untamed by her borders, often escaping banks and flooding low lying woodlands to form swampy sloughs or “bays.” Her beauty is like that of a pretty lady without make-up: natural, earthy, serene. She offers us an escape from now and a trip back in time to fish fries, school picnics, and church socials along her tree-shaded banks. Or further back to before the Revolutionary War when her course was called upon to form our county’s borders. Or even before that, when the natives who lived along her banks named her – the Mighty Ogeechee. Canoe and Kayak paddlers from all over the southeast have been invited to share the timeless beauty of the Ogeechee River this summer for a week-long excursion, June 20th – 26th. From Rocky Ford to Kings Ferry Park, the seven-day journey will take them through parts of Screven, Bryan, Effingham, and all of Bulloch County. Sponsored by Paddle Georgia in association with the Ogeechee Riverkeeper and Georgia River Network organizations, the annual journey down one of Georgia’s rivers will this year feature the Ogeechee and involve over 400 paddlers from ages 4 to 84. Paddle Georgia is an event open to all paddling skill levels and was originally created to educate and engage the public through an enjoyable first-hand experience, to make them more aware of our most valuable natural resources, and to empower them to get involved in the protection and restoration of Georgia’s Rivers. Each year it serves as a fundraiser for Georgia River Network and local watershed groups working to protect the year’s paddling route. This year the event will in part benefit the Ogeechee Riverkeeper organization. Paddlers raise money by soliciting sponsors, much like a walk-a-thon, to pledge an amount for each mile paddled. and paddle boards, plus other products and services from sponsors and supporters of the event. Pledges are collected on the first day of the excursion upon arrival. The group will gather at Portal High School on the evening of Friday, June 19th and the morning of Saturday, June 20th for check-in. Participants will receive a map, t-shirt, and event packets with information on meals, camp sites, and daily on-river routes. The boat drop-off point, where the trip begins, is at the Rocky Ford Boat Ramp in Bulloch County, all day Friday and Saturday. “This is a quality family outdoor tourism event that showcases one of Bulloch County’s most valuable natural resources to adventurers from all over Georgia and the Southeast,” stated Statesboro Convention & Visitors Bureau (SCVB) Executive Director Heidi Jeffers, who is helping to coordinate the event for Paddle Georgia, as well as providing local sponsorship. An event for the paddlers is planned for downtown Statesboro on Saturday, June 20th from 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. The street party organized by Main Street Statesboro and other local sponsors will offer live music, dancing, and games such as canoe tug-of-wars. Paddlers are also being encouraged to shop and dine in downtown Statesboro after the first day of adventure on the River. “The economic impact of having 400 additional shoppers and

diners in Statesboro for an evening like this is wonderful for our downtown and almost equals the tremendous amount of goodwill that is generated by hosting travel groups like this for our area,” said Jeffers. Local organizers have also planned events for those paddlers who wish to participate at Hunter Cattle Company and at the Garden of the Coastal Plain at Georgia Southern. Paddlers are also treated to optional beginners training courses, water monitoring workshops, breakfasts, coffee stations, bagged lunches, and sponsored evening meals at the campsites. There is no alcohol allowed on the trip, and everyone is encouraged to assist each other daily in a team effort getting all boats on the water. In addition to experiencing the natural beauty of the Ogeechee River, those who participate develop a rare and extraordinary sense of comradery during the journey. Along the way paddlers will be camping and dining at host sites on the river route. The first three nights, Portal High School will host the group. The next four nights will be hosted by Effingham County High School. The last night will feature a campout at Kings Ferry Park on the banks of the Ogeechee. A Journey’s End Celebration will include a dinner at Love’s Seafood Restaurant overlooking the river, and more music, games, and an awards presentation ceremony for all participants hosted by the Ogeechee Riverkeeper, adjacent to Love’s.

Organizers stress that “Paddle Georgia is not a commercial enterprise or a for-profit guided trip for individuals.” Rather it is a community adventure led by volunteers and the non-profit staff whose pooled efforts make the event successful each year. Since its inception, over 3,200 people have participated in Paddle Georgia, with over $250,000 being raised to protect Georgia’s rivers. On the last leg of the journey, just as paddlers are coming near the end of the Ogeechee before it meets the Atlantic Ocean, they will experience an on-river tour of the OgeecheeSavannah Canal, constructed in the early 1800s as a series of locks linking the Ogeechee and the Savannah Rivers. Never a financial success, the River Canal ceased operation in the late 1800s. The remains of the canal are now operated as a historic site by the Ogeechee-Savannah Canal Society. With the closure of the canal, the Ogeechee returned to its natural state, unfettered and free flowing, as it remains today. His earliest childhood memories are of being at his father’s medical office in Clinton, SC. Fitting since when looking at his lineage, you could easily say the practice of medicine is imprinted on his DNA. Dr. Nick Toussaint’s great-grandfather, Dr. Johann A. Toussaint; his father, Dr. Vincent Toussaint; his father-in-law, Dr. Robert M. Benson, Jr; his older brother, Dr. Phillip Toussaint; and his younger brother, Dr. Andy Toussaint could make family gatherings seem like a medical convention. Dr. Toussaint’s lineage forms an interesting background for the young doctor who is into his second year of practicing Obstetrics and Gynecology in Statesboro, hometown to his lovely wife, Bess (nee Benson) who he met at the College of Charleston during summer school. Bess was preparing to be a pharmacist and shared a class with Nick and brother, Andy. Nick said, “Andy gets the credit for bringing us together. He pointed her out to me.” Dr. Toussaint’s grandfather, Johan Toussaint, (1904-1988), grew up in Indonesia on the island of Java. He became the Dutch Ambassador to Indonesia and the Philippines remaining stationed in Bangkok and Thailand during World War II. Ultimately, after the invasion by the Japanese, he was held

under house arrest. Subsequently, Dr. Nick Toussaint’s father, Vincent, was born in the Dutch Consulate. His grandmother, Mary Stewart, was from Vancouver, BC, and an opera singer by profession, who died at a young age, when Vincent was only five-years-old. Dr. Vincent Toussaint is a naturalized Dutch citizen who attended Leidon University in the Netherlands. He is trained as a general practitioner and a surgeon and at age 75 still practices medicine in Clinton, SC. Dr. Nick’s mother is a pathology technician. He has the two doctor brothers and one sister, Kristin, a very successful cosmetologist. Growing up in the Toussaint household, Dr. Nick explains, “We were expected to pick a profession like doctor, lawyer, or engineer. As long as we had a goal, our parents were supportive. We had an enriched, but not affluent upbringing, where we studied, played competitive sports, and learned the spirit of serving our greater community from our parents.” Dr. Nick credits his father as being his biggest role model. “I try to emulate him and his practice. He never considered medicine to be the gateway to living a life of luxury, instead he believed that he practiced in service to his patients.” He attended public schools in Clinton and graduated high school in 2000. An early family discipline of extra training in science and mathemat-

ics prepared Dr. Nick for obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry cum laude from the College of Charleston in 2004. Then he took a year’s sabbatical. Dr. Nick knew Bess wanted to be a pharmacist and the two had decided to marry that year, so prior to starting the next chapter of his life as Bess’ husband and medical school student, he worked some odd jobs and took off for Nepal on a dental mission trip to assist Tibetan refugees. While in Tibet, Dr. Nick wanted to experience the climb of Mt. Everest. Time was limited due to the approaching monsoon season and he was on a tight schedule to get home for the wedding, but he managed to make it to 14,000 feet hiking and climbing for days in very rustic conditions. The flight home had to be met on Wednesday before the rains started and delayed air travel. Dr. Nick said, “I met the plane on Wednesday and flew home, got married on Saturday in my in-laws backyard, and showed up for medical school in Charleston on Tuesday.” He and Bess honeymooned a year later in the Bahamas. He graduated the Medical University of South Carolina as an MD in 2009. And from Charleston he was matched for the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. This brought another year of fast change for the couple. Bess was pregnant with their first daughter, Caroline. The couple had to move, start new jobs, and welcome a new baby in a relatively short period of time. After four years in Charlotte, NC, the Toussaints moved south to Statesboro, nearer to Bess’ family and into a more small-town way of life. According to Dr. Nick, the exact way they wanted to raise their family. “There is an atmosphere of ‘keeping up with the Joneses’ in a bigger city like Charlotte,” he said. “Here there is a much better and more genuine quality of life.” Next to counting his father as his biggest influence, Dr. Nick also credits his father-in-law,

uilt in July 2000, East Georgia Regional Medical Center is a four-level, 150-bed acute care hospital featuring a Women’s Pavilion and an adjacent medical office building. The hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, a distinction awarded only to those healthcare facilities that maintain the highest standards of quality. East Georgia Regional Medical Center’s healthcare team consists of approximately 750 employees and over 95 physicians representing a wide range of specialties. The expansion of medical services and professionals, along with a major investment in technology, has firmly established East Georgia Regional’s reputation for providing a higher medical standard. East Georgia Regional Medical Center offers a 24-hour physician-staffed emergency department, a Level II neonatal center, outpatient services including same day surgery and ambulatory care, a pain management center, a wound care clinic, a cardiac catheterization lab, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, and state-of-the-art diagnostic procedures including digital mammography, MRI, CT, PET/CT, nuclear medicine, and interventional radiology. The Women’s Pavilion provides dedicated services to women of all ages, and includes eight labor, delivery, and recovery suites. Each month, our Surgical Services department performs over 1000 outpatient procedures and our Emergency Room treats over 3,500 patients. Over 135 babies are born in the Women’s Pavilion each month. East Georgia Regional Medical Center opened an Interventional Cardiology service in April 2010. This expansion of our cardiology program has allowed patients needing angioplasty and/or stent placement to receive these services without leaving Statesboro. Electrophysiology services were also added to the cardiology program in August 2011. The addition of these services have dramatically increased the quality of care in our community. In October 2010, East Georgia Regional became one of only four hospitals in Southeast Georgia capable of performing robotic surgery. This highly specialized surgical tool allows surgeons to perform procedures that are less invasive and require less recovery time. The surgical robot has high definition optics, a simulation module for physician training, and will be used to perform increasingly complex surgical procedures, including thoracic and general surgery. Dr. Bill Mase Professor of Health Policy and Management Jiann Ping-Hsu College of Public Health Georgia Southern Professor of Health Policy and Management Bill Mase, Dr.P.H., is leading public health initiatives on both a local and national scale. Though he joined the faculty only a year ago, Mase has led the way in research at the Jiann Ping-Hsu College of Public Health (JPHCOPH), and said the faculty support at the University has helped him in his efforts. “It is truly an honor and privilege to serve on the faculty here,” he said. “The support afforded faculty to develop quality education for our students, advance transformational public health research and serve our diverse communities is unparalleled.” Also unparalleled are the varied projects Mase is leading at the University. In 2014, shortly after his arrival at Georgia Southern, the Southwest Georgia Area Health Education Center (AHEC) awarded Mase and Professor Bettye Apenteng, Ph.D., a $50,000 contract to conduct a regional health care workforce needs assessment of a 38-county region. AHEC will use the results to develop workforce initiatives to serve the needs of its rural area residents. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) awarded Mase and his colleagues a $450,000 food safety workforce grant for 2013-2017. This five-year initiative focuses on the standardization, knowledge and behavior of local health department food protection staff, evaluating training, developing policy and evaluating curriculum implementation. This spring, the Georgia Department of Community Health State Office of Rural Health awarded Mase, Apenteng and Professor Yelena Tarasenko, Dr.P.H., a $200,000 plan-

ning grant to conduct a Community-Partnered Participatory Research (CPPR) initiative. The focus of this CPPR is to evaluate the financial position of non-profit rural hospitals, help them identify health care access and needs, develop a plan for meeting those needs and assist the community in adopting the plan.

As the summer approaches, many teenagers and young adults utilize their break from school to schedule a suitable time to have their wisdom teeth evaluated. Sharks cause a sensation in any environment. Just watch TV’s SyFy Channel and you’ll see movie adaptions like Dinoshark and Sharkopus that push the public’s obsessive fear of sharks to the extreme for entertainment purposes. If you want to see some real “Sharks” in action, however, visit the Statesboro Bulloch County Parks and Recreation Department’s popular water park, Splash in the Boro any Tuesday or Thursday afternoon and watch the Statesboro Sharks Swim Team glide through the water. A long standing swimming competition program within the “Rec Department,” until 2012, the Statesboro Sharks focused on competition swimming and traveled to meets that often required two to three day travel arrangements and overnight accommodations. After 2012, when Head Coach Erin Hight was promoted in her day job at Optim Orthopedics and had to leave her post as swim coach, the Sharks focus changed somewhat to accommodate the requests from some participants and parents for a more localized swimming skills improvement program. Aquatics Program Supervisor Jenna Campbell shared, “We were dealing with 35 swimmers and about half wanted more competition, while the other half preferred less.

We looked for a solution that would work best for everyone involved.” The Sharks competition team members who wanted more meets joined with Chatham County swimmers that were already a part of the Statesboro team to form a more advanced travel team now based at the Chatham County Aquatics Center. “That really gave our swimmers the best of both worlds,” said Steve Brown, Aquatics Division Manager. “We are now able to provide a training line-up that is a feeder program for the more advanced team.” That program is set-up to develop the skills of swimmers, from beginner to advanced stages. The program is designed to address three areas: stroke refinement, stamina, and endurance. The object is always to cut time so individual swimmers can grow into real competitors. The swimmers practice their skills year round, twice a week at Splash in the Boro. Swimmers who participate in the program must meet benchmarks of improvement to move up a level. Three different levels of instruction are available: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Within each level are skill asMay/June 2015 • 61

sessments the swimmers must pass to proceed. If a swimmer is unable to reach a benchmark, coaches work with them to improve their performance, and private lessons are available for those who want to engage a personal trainer. “The goal is for swimmers to progress at their own pace,” Brown stated. “You must be at least six-years-old to tryout, and you have to complete stroke school before-hand.” There are two stroke schools for the Sharks. One school focuses on the breast stroke and the butterfly, while the second school focuses on the free style and back strokes. One can begin the swim program at any skill level. “We take swimmers from six months to adults into our aquatics program,” stated Brown. “Up to three years, a parent must be in the pool with the child. After that age, anyone can enter the program

and we will work with them according to their skill set.” There is also a Starfish Aquatics Program combined with the skills and endurance training that focuses on water safety, introducing swimmers to the proper use of life jackets, CPR training, and 911 emergency calls. “This training increases with each level, too,” Brown added. Instructor and Shark’s Head Coach Brad Savage, a competitive swimmer for Georgia Southern, has been with the program for one year. He oversees both the Junior and Senior levels of competitive swimmers. Those swimming with the Sharks require four days a week of instruction to get prepared for regional and state meets sanctioned by the Georgia Recreation & Parks Association (GRPA). Statesboro hosts the regional GRPA competition every other year. This year the District 1 swim

meet will be held in Vidalia in the latter part of June. The state competition occurs in Tifton in mid-July. Try-outs are held regularly for students who want to join the Sharks. If a swimmer doesn’t make the team, he or she is offered lessons to advance in areas that need improvement. The Junior and Senior swimmers meet twice a week for lessons from one to one and a half hours. Some of the benefits of being a Shark include getting to swim laps anytime at Splash for no extra charge. You can also have access to coaching two

days a week, and can work on your own anytime. To try-out for the Junior level, a swimmer must be able to swim 50 yards freestyle, and 25 yards of the backstroke, the butterfly, and the breast stroke. The Senior level swimmer must complete 200 yards freestyle, and 50 yards each of the other three strokes. Juniors and Seniors all train at the same time to increase

Azure Bailey Rountree Noted Cookbook Author & Autism Awareness Activist Headlines 6th Annual Farm to Table Dinner

The sixth annual Farm to Table Dinner to benefit Georgia Southern’s Zach S. Henderson Library will this year feature noted cookbook author and autism awareness activist Azure Bailey Rountree. A self-taught cook, Rountree began her culinary journey by watching national celebrity cook Paula Deen on television. She followed Deen’s Southern recipes and tweaked them to suit her own family’s tastes. Rountree then began to share her treats with family, friends, and neighbors, all of whom wanted more. This led her to sell homemade sweets and treats at Statesboro’s Main Street Farmers Market where she developed a loyal base of customers. With the encouragement of supporters and friends, Rountree established a relationship with the TV celebrity which led to her famous pralines being sold in Paula Deen’s restaurant gift shops in Savannah. An advocate of autism awareness since son James was diagnosed at age 2½, Rountree asked that a portion of the proceeds from the sale of her pralines go to the Autism Foundation of Georgia. To date she has raised over $5,500.

In addition, Rountree has published a cookbook containing her most popular recipes – Family Favorites. Proceeds from the sale of the book also benefit the Autism Foundation. It is available for sale locally at Colonial House of Flowers and Rountree will be available at the Farm to Table Dinner for book signings. This year’s dinner menu will feature a seasonally inspired fresh market selection of fare from local farmers. Head Chef Adam Sapp of Georgia Southern will prepare the meal which will begin with a cocktails at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $75 per person with proceeds going towards the purchase of Georgia Southern Library resources. The annual event is hosted by the Friends of the Zach S. Henderson Library. Tickets may be purchased in advance by calling 912.478.5115.

The Ride

Earlier this year, I was given the opportunity to go on a ride along with a Statesboro or Bulloch County public safety officer as part of the requirements for my Leadership Bulloch Class of 2015. I immediately called on my 2014 Dancing with the Statesboro Stars partner, Jeff Thompson. Jeff is a Master Deputy for the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office, a member of the TAC (Tactical Apprehension and Control Team) and also serves the community as a DARE Instructor and TIPS instructor. Deputy Thompson serves as a member of the Bulloch County Sherriff’s Office Road Patrol Division which is the front line of defense against crime taking place in Bulloch County and the backbone of County law enforcement. The Road Patrol deputies work 12-hour shifts that alternate between days and nights every four weeks. They cover one of the largest land mass counties in the State of Georgia totaling approximately 684 square miles. To be candid, prior to my ride along, I had no clue about the daily duties of the Sheriff’s Department. I was just glad they were here to protect the citizens of Bulloch County. Deputy Thompson and I chose a Saturday night in January for the date of the ride along. He told me to dress warmly as it would get bitterly cold late into the night. While the temperature was still relatively mild when he picked me up at 6:30 p.m. to begin the night shift, I haphazardly grabbed a jacket doubting that I would even need to use it. On the way out, he gave me a bullet proof vest and the whole adventure became real. While I’ll admit that the vest was way cooler than the heels and blazers that I wear every morning for work, part of me still wanted to get right back out of that patrol car and stay in my warm, safe home avoiding any of the encounters the night might bring. I ignored my inclination to politely tell Jeff, “Thanks, but no thanks,” tightened up my vest and headed down to the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office to sign my waiver of liability. At that moment, it really dawned on me that the fear I was feeling on one night as a simple bystander was something that these deputies do every day, rain or shine, day or night. Their duty and sacrifice really impacted me. As we got started, I told Jeff that I could probably stay awake until midnight at the latest as I usually liked to get in bed around 10:00 p.m. If I were him, I would have thrown me out of the car at that moment. He was starting his second 12-hour night shift of the week and I’ll bet he was way more tired than I could imagine. We immediately got a call through dispatch. Blue lights flashing and sirens blazing, we headed to the other side of the county. When we finally arrived (in amazing amount of time, may I add) at the scene of

the crime, I looked over at Deputy Thompson and told him, “Oh, it’s OK. I can just watch from here. You go ahead.” He told me to get out of the car and come along. “You will be fine.” As the night continued on, I slipped into my role as “assistant deputy” with more comfort and ease. At one point, I think the vest went to my head and I found myself lecturing college students on the stupidity and selfishness of drag racing. From 6:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m., we went to domestic disturbances, car accidents, and patrolled the county. We went from one side of the county to the other so many times, at one point in the wee hours of the morning, I had to stop and ask Deputy Thompson, “Now, where are we again?” As the night went on, the air got colder. Freezing, I put my jacket on under my vest. And no matter what, even though the car heat would thaw me out temporarily in between stops, when there was a call, you had to go. There was no telling what you would find when you got there. Around 2:30 a.m., I was exhausted and cold. My vision and mind were beginning to fail me. While Deputy Thompson could take me home, he still had another four and a half hours left on his shift. Through this experience, I was profoundly impacted by the sacrifice and the duty that these deputies make daily to keep our community safe. They have to power through the weather, the fatigue, and the danger. Even with all the stress, they do their jobs with a smile. All of the Bulloch County Sherriff’s Deputies that I met that night were wonderful people who really seem to love what they do. It was one of the best nights that I have ever had while living in Bulloch County over the past nine years. I would go on another ride anytime they would let me. In just one night, I got to see domestic disturbances calmed, hurt people airlifted, and potential incidents halted by thorough law enforcement patrol. I am so grateful for the opportunity and would recommend it to anyone to gain a better appreciation and understanding of the great people that make Bulloch County a safe place to live. Thank you Deputy Thompson and the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Department for the ride of my life.

The very wise King Solomon had a lot to say about the tongue. In essence, the tongue can be used to encourage or it can bring destruction. It can be deceitful or bring healing. It can be the world’s smallest, but largest, troublemaker, or the world’s smallest, but largest, blesser. A man passed along a story about another man that he didn’t care for. At the time he thought the story was true. When the story made its way around town it utterly destroyed the man. His family, his job, and his integrity were all devastated by the rumor mill. The man who was the subject of the story finally had to leave town, ruined and defeated. The man who had passed the story along discovered that the rumor was false. He had helped to destroy an innocent man with his tongue. He went to his pastor and said, “I have destroyed a man with my words.” Then he told the whole story. “Please,” he said. “I’m sorry. Can I be forgiven this sin?” The pastor told the man that this was not so simple. “Go get a bag of feathers,” he said, “and place one feather in the front yard of every house in town.” It seemed like a strange request to the man, but he really wanted forgiveness, so he followed the instructions to the letter. Then he came back to the pastor and said, “I have done what you asked. Can I be forgiven now?” “Not yet,” said the pastor. “Now you must retrace your steps and bring back to me every feather you placed around town.” “But, but... I could never do that! The wind has carried the feathers away!”

Bill Perry grew up in Live Oak, Florida, a small town just south of Valdosta, GA. After graduating from Stetson University, he earned three degrees from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. In 2004, he retired as pastor of First Baptist Church of Statesboro after serving that congregation for 22 years. He and his wife, Margaret, registrar of Statesboro High School before her retirement in 2005, have two daughters, five grandsons, and one granddaughter. Bill has been very much involved in community life in Statesboro. He is an avid reader and has been a runner since 1973.

“Yes,” said the pastor, “and in the same way your careless words have scattered, destroying an innocent man.” No wonder King Solomon said the tongue can cause all sorts of destruction. But thank the Lord, the opposite is also true. The tongue can bring great blessings to others. Years ago I heard the story of an elementary school girl who was born with a terribly disfigured mouth. Apparently she was in a financially distressed family who did not have the resources to provide corrective surgery for her. She was so disfigured that her classmates avoided her. One day her teacher was giving some preliminary hearing tests. Taking the students one at a time she would begin whispering a phrase and have the student inch closer and closer to the teacher’s desk, stopping only when the child could understand what the teacher was saying. When it became time for the girl with the misshapen mouth, she moved toward the teacher and suddenly stopped and broke out in tears. Happy tears. For this girl who thought she was unlovable heard the teacher say, “I wish you were my little girl.” That was the beginning of life for the girl when she realized she was lovable after all. Wow! The tongue really can bring healing. Perhaps each of us should follow the wise advice of the one who said, “Before you say anything about a person you should ask: Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind?” The tongue is a power way-out of proportion to its size. It can bless; it can burn. Twelve words, spoken from your heart, will bring encouragement to others: Please; Thank You; I’m Sorry; I Love You; and I’m Praying for You. May/June 2015 • 75

It’s 1972. The Coleman brothers, Leodel, editor, and G.C., back shop operations manager, are in the transition of selling the Bulloch Herald, a long-time weekly newspaper serving the county; they are drawing a contract to sell the Herald to Charles H. Morris. Across those years I became good friends with M.L. Hall and Walter Lewis, typesetters, vital parts of production. I will always remember my conversation with M.L. and Walter as to their futures. M.L. said he was asked to set up a printing operation for Georgia Southern. Walter looked at me, and allowed, “Ric, me and the wife are thinking about renting a small place out on U.S. Highway 80 West and seeing what we can do with our own business, for jobs like stationery, brochures, and business cards.” I wished them well. Now it is 2011. Jenny Lynn Anderson has asked me to serve as her book editor for a courageous story about her experience of sexual assault in an Atlanta hotel when she was 28. We drive to Lewis Lithographer’s for a meeting with Tommy Lewis, CEO, of an independent master publishing house for printing documents to serve industry throughout America. As we were welcomed by Tommy, my mind drifted into 1972 and the small setting of Walter Lewis and his modest dream. Tommy greeted us warmly as we opened our initial session on the technical aspects of his printing Jenny Lynn’s book. Plus the tough world of copywriting, which Tommy said, “I can take care of that.” The elusive journey in gaining an IBS number. Tommy said, “I can handle that for you.” And building a website for Room 939: 15 Minutes of Horror, 20 Years of Healing, with Tommy’s reply, “We can do that along with Facebook, and the likes.” Tommy Lewis was a Godsend. He became involved with this project spiritually and personally. And over the next several months his keenness and caring made it happen. So what do we have here? An accomplished pianist, a loving and dedicated husband to Melanie. A devoted Dad and Granddad! A

Christian man of his word just like his papa. What I am doing here is opening the curtains on one terrific man who ranks high with me based on my 40 years of working with printers and publishers. The only time I was truly one-on-one with Tommy was when I developed an article for Statesboro Magazine on Tommy and Melanie’s son, Bubba Lewis, about his journey into Hollywood. Let me add, over those days of working with Tommy, when he spoke of Bubba, there was that unedited love. As of this writing, Tommy is working with evangelist Janet Swanson publishing her moving story entitled, One Voice, as well as putting muscle to Adrian Peterson’s revised book, Don’t Dis My Abilities, telling of a kid with a stutter who never doubted God’s Word. How many lives has Tommy touched, influenced, encouraged? Starting with his wife of 32 years, Melanie, who, when asked about her husband, returns without a pause, “Loyal, dedicated to our marriage, and a person of courage.” “Additionally,” she smiles, “My man does not like the spotlight. No! He stays behind the curtain as he helps those in need!” Well, no apologies, Tommy, from this writer for exposing you. I want all who read my words to be enlightened by the quality man you are. I inquired to Melanie, what were Tommy’s toughest moments in their years together? “It took place in 2010 when Bubba went through open heart surgery, and in 2013 when our daughter, Alaina, received a love gift from her husband Justin of a kidney! He stayed so strong for me and our family in 2010 and 2013. But having loved this wonderful person over half my life I knew this was it for him – and yes there were tears.” Tommy Lewis, the quiet man, who along with his brother and sister, took his parents’ dream of being kind to customers and providing superb work, from a small shop on U.S. Highway 80 West, to a massive and magical site on Joe Kennedy Boulevard just off of U.S. Highway 301 South.
