CATA’s Night Owl ferries students all night long The service, which operates from 2 to 7 a.m. during the week, offers students curb-to-curb transportation anywhere on campus

Juggling classes and two jobs plus fraternity requirements, Moreno still goes to the library to study after his long day.

“The only place I can definitely study without me taking a break like ‘Oh, I need to watch YouTube videos or something,’ is the library,” Moreno said.

When he’s done studying, it’s too late for Moreno to take the Capital Area Transportation Authority, or CATA, bus back to his residence hall.

“Every time I’m (at the Main Library) or anywhere on campus, I call the Night Owl,” Moreno said. “They pick me up and drop me off in front of my dorm — just to be safe.”

The Night Owl is a CATA service that provides rides for MSU students after the CATA buses have stopped running for the night. The Night Owl will pick up students anywhere on campus and take them to another on-campus destination.

Laurie Robison, director of marketing for CATA, said the Night Owl transportation service has been offered since 1999.

“It gives our campus riders peace of mind knowing that transportation is available late at night and in the wee hours of the morning,” Robison said.

Students rely on the curb-to-curb Night Owl transportation service for different reasons.

“When it was really helpful was last semester when we had a terrible winter,” Moreno said. “I was working in the Pavilion and I had to walk from there to Holden, which was like a 30-minute walk. I called the Night Owl and they

would always come pick me up every night.”

Marketing freshman Yoo-Jin Jeong said she typically walks home late at night. Jeong is concerned about her safety, but isn’t familiar with the Night Owl service.

“I always stay late at the (Main) Library and I walk back to my dorm afterwards,” Jeong said.

“I’m a woman and campus is not always safe, especially around night. If something happens, no one is around and will know.”

As a male, Moreno said his safety is just as important. And recent incidents of assault and other crimes on campus make him and other students think twice about walking alone.

Robison said the network of green light emergency phones in campus parking areas and along walkways allows students to make on-campus numbers, including the Night Owl service.

“The number to schedule a ride on Night Owl is posted on the north and south walls of Ramp 1 on Shaw Lane, next to the emergency phones.

We ask customers to allow for approximately 20 minutes from the time their ride is requested until the bus arrives,” Robison said.

Students can use the Night Owl bus for free with semester bus passes, 31-day passes or 10-day ride cards. Without a bus pass, students must pay a 60 cent fare with a valid MSU ID. The Night Owl service is available Monday through Friday – 2-7 a.m. and Saturdays and Sundays – 2-9 a.m.

“You never know what could happen if they drop you off at a bus stop or stop sign,” Moreno said of the fact that Night Owl drivers drop him off right at his residence hall and waits until he gets inside.

“Even though it may take awhile for me to get home, I don’t care. As long as I’m in a safe place,” Moreno said.

Same-sex marriage ban upheld The U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals has issued a decision that will uphold Michigan’s constitutional ban on same-sex marriage, along with bans in three other states in a 2-1 decision.

In February, U.S. District Judge Bernard Friedman declared the ban unconstitutional. After, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette filed an appeal in the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals.

The decision will now likely go to the U.S. Supreme Court.

MSU listed as 75th best in worldwide ranking It is the first time U.S. News and World Report ranked universities on a global scale, and MSU received a score of 59.1 out of 100.

MSU students can pride themselves by the fact that they attend one of the top 100 universities in the world, according to a rankings list published last week by U.S. News and World Report.

Five hundred universities in 49 countries made the rankings list and MSU tied for 75th place with Leiden University in the Netherlands. This is the first time the U.S. News and World Report has calculated rankings globally, usually only ranking universities on the national level. Strangely, in the publication’s national ranking MSU comes out lower, at 85th.

There was a very specific methodology used to determining the rankings, taking things like regional and global research quality and number of Ph.D.s awarded

into account, each coming with a different weight. Each university was then given a score and rankings were established accordingly. MSU’s ranking was 59.1 overall, while the top ranked school, Harvard University, received a score of 100 overall.

The study also goes into specific subject rankings. MSU ranked 12 in the world for plant and animal sciences. Other top scoring subjects for MSU were agricultural sciences, which ranked 21st, and economics and business at 23rd.

Four out of the top five universities in the world are in the United States, with the top four being Harvard, MIT, Berkeley and Stanford, with Oxford University in the United Kingdom being the first non-American university to make it on the rankings.

MSU has been well-regarded in rankings recently, scoring high in another study conducted by Times Higher Education earlier in October. MSU’s global score in that study was 82nd out of a ranked 400 universities. This study showed improvement by the university, increasing from 83 last year and up from 122 in 2010.

In that survey, U-M was ranked 17th, an improvement from last year’s ranking of 18th, but still lower than their 2010 ranking of 15th.

Times Higher Education cautioned that the results are by no means definitive.

However, in their analysis of the rankings list, they wrote that “the key message is that more attention needs to be paid to how we assess and compare institutions and what these assessments mean in terms of global competition and the world order.”

Ohio State will define MSU football’s season The fate of the Big Ten conference depends on Saturday’s marquee matchup between the No. 7 Spartans and No. 13 Buckeyes

Win, and the sky’s the limit for MSU. Lose, and all of the preseason goals and aspirations are thrown out the window.

Everything is at stake this Saturday when No. 7 MSU welcomes No. 13 Ohio State to Spartan Stadium for college football’s marquee game of the week.

“It’s a big game, there is no question about that,” head coach Mark Dantonio said. “It’s a big game at Spartan Stadium, should be a great atmosphere. Like I said earlier, with our crowd into it, our students will be into it, it’s everything that you want in college football.”

MSU (7-1 overall, 4-0 Big Ten) will look to continue its six-game winning streak in its biggest remaining regular season game. OSU (7-1 overall, 4-0 Big Ten) enters the matchup riding its own six-game winning streak, creating what many consider a de facto Big Ten East Division championship game.

Saying Saturday is just another game would simply be an understatement, and MSU players understand that. Junior quarterback Connor Cook, an Ohio native, said he loves games such as this week’s against OSU and cites these big time opportunities as a reason why he took his talents to the banks of the Red Cedar.

“That’s why we come to a school like Michigan State,” Cook said. “To play in games like this, to be on the stage with the implications on the line.”

IMPROVED BUCKEYES After running the table during the regular season last year, it’s hard to believe that OSU is even better this year — but that’s what MSU players and coaches are saying.

MSU got a close look at OSU in last year’s Big Ten Championship Game, topping the Buckeyes 34-24 to clinch their first Rose Bowl berth since 1988. The victory also snapped a 24-game winning streak for OSU and ended the scarlet-andgray’s dreams of playing for a national champi-

onship last season.

Multiple Spartan players have made the connection between last year’s Buckeye team to this year, and the common consensus is that OSU has vastly improved. Cook said he’s mostly noticed changes in the coverage packages from last year, but overall the Buckeye defense is better than the one MSU beat last December.

“Their defensive line is very, very good,” Cook said. “Great linebackers, guys that are active, guys that are fast and they got guys that are strong in the secondary as well, so it’s a good defense.”

The same can be said about the new look of OSU’s offense in head coach Urban Meyer’s third year in Columbus. OSU graduated workhorse running back Carlos Hyde, who had more than 1,500 rushing yards and 18 total touchdowns last season, and two-time Big Ten Silver Football award winner senior quarterback Braxton Miller has missed the entire season with a shoulder injury. But the losses of both Hyde and Miller have been overshadowed by phenom freshman quarterback J.T. Barrett.

The true freshman signal caller has 2,352 total yards and 29 total touchdowns through the Buckeyes’ first eight games, earning himself a spot on the Davey O’Brien semifinalist list earlier this week.

Both senior linebacker Taiwan Jones and senior free safety Kurtis Drummond have noticed Barrett’s progression since the start of the sea6

son, and he has earned the respect of both Spartan defenders. However, Jones went the extra mile and said he believes Barrett is a better fit for Meyer’s offensive style and will pose more concerns this week against MSU. “As an athlete I feel like Miller was better but to fit in that offense, Urban Meyer’s (offense), he fits well, like (Tim) Tebow in that Florida offense with Urban Meyer,” Jones said. “I feel like Barrett fits in that offense better and he can control the game better.”

POTENTIAL SHOOTOUT Through the years, both MSU and OSU have made a name for themselves as stout defensive programs, but Saturday could be different.

Both MSU and OSU enter Saturday’s highly touted matchup boasting a couple of the nation’s most prolific offensive attacks. Both teams average more than 45 points per game, with OSU ranking No. 4 and MSU ranking No. 5 in scoring offense in the country.

MSU holds a small advantage in total yards per game, averaging 515.3 yards per game compared to the Buckeyes’ 505.1 yards per game.

Fans are always looking for a high-scoring shootout and Cook shares that same interest.

Cook said MSU’s offense is looking forward to the challenge and enjoys the idea of being able to carry the load if the game turns into a high scoring affair.

“Any time you have offenses that are averag-

Spotlight ing those kind of points and are capable of doing what they have shown in the past it’s going to call for a good game,” Cook said. “We’re looking forward to it, Ohio State’s looking forward to it, it’s going to be a great atmosphere.”

The growth in MSU’s offense over the past two seasons is an obvious reason for why some are expecting this one to be unlike past defensive battles. The improvements on the offensive side of the ball is something Meyer has noticed so far this season.

Meyer said having an experienced quarterback in Cook has been the biggest difference from last season, creating this week’s potential barn burner.

“This time last year they were still trying to get their rhythm on offense and they certainly did,” Meyer said. “Now they’re one of the best offenses in the country so that’s the biggest difference.”

MAKE OR BREAK GAME In a lot of ways Saturday will serve as a game that will determine the rest of MSU’s season.

Both MSU and OSU enter the game with one non-conference loss and a perfect Big Ten record atop the East Division. On top of the conference implications, the loser on Saturday will be basically eliminated from the College Football Playoff conversation and playing for

simply another bowl game appearance.

Both players and coaches understand the magnitude of this game and what is at stake on Saturday. The winner of the game will hold sole possession of first place in the division with only three games left, creating a foreseeable path to Indianapolis.

“This is definitely a really big game,” senior offensive lineman Travis Jackson said. “It’s two teams at the (top of) the division and whatever team wins this game, controls their own destiny, and that’s all you can ask for in the Big Ten Conference.”

Dantonio hasn’t been playing down the game by any means either. He did mention this isn’t the biggest game he’s been a part of since joining the Spartan sidelines, but knows what it’ll mean for the rest of the season.

Dantonio said this game is about the team’s No. 1 goal of defending its Big Ten Championship and the bigger implications that come after that.

“The way the standings look right now this game is extremely important because you’ll win the tie breakers, as well, whoever wins this game. So that’s what makes it even more, I think, important,” Dantonio said.

“Can we represent our division in the Big Ten Championship Game? What can that springboard us toward?”

The Spartans will feed off the crowd and take an early lead, but the lead won’t stick for long. Like last year’s Big Ten Championship Game, the momentum will swing and OSU will tie the game up in the third quarter, striking fear and doubt into the Spartan faithful.

However, junior quarterback Connor Cook will continue his incredible stretch and lead a pair of scoring drives in the fourth quarter to regain the lead. Cook finishes the night with nearly 300 passing yards and throws a touchdown to his favorite target senior wide receiver Tony Lippett in the final minutes to seal the Spartan victory and crack the Buckeyes for a second straight year.

MSU 31-OHIO STATE-17 It’s the biggest game of the year for MSU, and for Ohio State, it is a chance at redemption and to prove that they belong in the playoff conversation.

For both teams it’s probably the last chance to show the playoff committee what they can do against good competition.

Ohio State is a team that has dominated opponents after an inexplicable early loss to Virginia Tech, but the quality of those opponents remind me of MSU’s basketball team playing The Master’s College.

Take a look at this stunning list of wins: Navy, Kent State, Cincinnati, Maryland, Rutgers, Penn State and Illinois.

Impressed? Neither am I. OSU hasn’t been challenged but it hasn’t always mattered, like against Virginia Tech. I know J.T. Barrett is vastly improved and the defensive line is incredible, but I think OSU is weak in the secondary.

Enter Connor Cook and Tony Lippett. While getting the ground game established will be important because the weather isn’t supposed to be awesome, I look for the Lippett-Cook combo to score a lot and for MSU’s defense to be MSU’s defense.

I think MSU comes out early, gets a big lead, the students leave, and OSU gets back into it a little bit. No one will remember this game as being as close as it will be.

Got a sweet tooth? East Lansing and the surrounding area is home to four notable bakeries: Sugar Shack, Bake n’ Cakes, Le Bon Macaron and MSU Bakers.

SUGAR SHACK “I like the vibe of the store and the individuals that work there.

I like the diversity in their flavors and offerings as well.” — Abigail Bhattacharyya, MSU alumna Sugar Shack is owned and operated by Darek Makhoul.

“Everything is made fresh daily from scratch and in store,” Makhoul said. “Cookies are made fresh every 15 to 20 minutes, brownies are made every morning, custom-made pies for each individual person and we deliver.”

Bhattacharyya said she is

a fan of Sugar Shack’s cream cheese frosting and chocolate chip cookies.

One of the most popular items on the menu for students are the gourmet cupcakes. The bakery also offers a product known as “poppers,” which are balls of raw cookie dough that are safe to eat and cannot be baked.

It’s definitely different for the area and provides a great relief to your sweet tooth if you’re looking for something out of the ordinary.” — Ross Bottomley, urban and regional planning sophomore Kelly Toland, owner of Le Bon Macaron, describes a macaron as being like a meringue cookie made with almonds. The outside of the cookie is crunchy and the inside is soft and filled with

flavored buttercream.

“Probably the most popular (macaron) is salted caramel,” Toland said. “The nutella one is also really popular.”

BAKE N’ CAKES “I would say Bake N’ Cakes is fresher than most bakeries in this area. I love that they have all of their products out on display ready for purchase. I also love their seasonal flavors, especially for the fall.” — Sophia Bozzo, Spanish sophomore Bozzo said she was thoroughly impressed by her birthday cupcakes created by Bake N’ Cakes last month.

Bake N’ Cakes offers a variety of baked goods, such as cakes, cookies and cupcakes. Manager Emily Weldon said cupcakes are their most popular item.

“We put fillings in them and we have 20 different flavors,”

she said.

The bakery makes everything fresh on-site and doesn’t receive any frozen products.

One of the most unique items offered by Bake N’ Cakes is a cheesecake known as “Death by Cheesecake.” Weldon said the most popular flavor is chocolate.

This dessert involves a chocolate mousse filling, chocolate cake on top and chocolate ganache.

“We do everything they do in a different way,” Saswell said, referring to the other bakeries in East Lansing.

One of the most popular items offered by MSU Bakers are the game day cookies, which are sugar cookies that feature the Spartan logo.

MSU BAKERS “(The MSU Bakers) chocolate chip cookies are pretty good. I try not to have them too often, but they’re pretty good.” — Morgan Fenton, history freshman Most students probably know of MSU Bakers from eating in the dining halls. Manager Cindy Saswell said the main purpose of MSU Bakers is to provide baked goods for residential dining.

Other popular items include chocolate chip cookies and bagels, both of which are made from scratch.

“We have 15 different kinds (of bagels), anywhere from plain to blueberry to olive oil, cheddar to asiago (and) cinnamon toast crunch,” Saswell said.

Murder of rapist of New Delhi man’s daughter reflects global lack of faith in the justice system

Several days ago in New Delhi, India, 36-year-old Vinod Kumar tortured and killed a 45-year-old man whom Kumar believed had raped his 14-year-old daughter two months prior.

His daughter found out she was pregnant several days previous to

the man’s murder, according to BBC News.

The 45-year-old man, a medical supplier, was invited by Kumar for dinner to be confronted, but the man taunted him and further provoked him.

Kumar fed him and gave him drugged drinks, then tied the man down to a chair with bedsheets and used a spatula heated by his stove to burn the man’s genitals before strangling him to death.

According to The Indian Express, Kumar chose not to notify authorities of his daughter’s rape because he was afraid neighbors and relatives would blame the girl and give her a bad name.

I have seen an outpouring of support for Kumar’s actions on comment sections and social media, saying that justice has been served.

However, the reality is that the man’s torture and murder are cruel, unusual and unjustified.

Do I believe that the alleged rapist should have been punished? Absolutely, if proven guilty. But we don’t live in the middle ages anymore. We have developed beyond using animalistic mutilation as a form of punishment.

At the same time, it’s painfully obvious that if rape cases are taken to court, it’s unlikely the accused will be charged with any crime.

a society that created a situation in which an enraged father didn’t think he could turn to authorities to help him and his family.

Kumar took the law into his own hands because he believed his daughter would be shamed if his community found out, and that the justice system would do nothing to see that his daughter’s alleged rapist paid for his crime, if proven guilty.

Another issue is that some people are assuming the daughter lied about her rape. Many assume girls cry “rape� to get attention, revenge or distract from something else. But only two percent of rape cases in the United States are false, according to

the U.S. Justice Department.

Obviously this alleged sexual assault didn’t take place in America, and it was never proven to have happened, but given the daughter’s pregnancy and the murdered man’s alleged taunting of Kumar one can hardly doubt this case has legitimacy.

Due to the nature of sexual assault, it is difficult to prove that it happened and convict an alleged rapist. And because of the globally persistent rape culture, victim blaming is all too common.

I sympathize with Kumar. He found out his daughter had been violated by a neighbor and knew that she would be blamed by society for something that wasn’t her fault. She would bear the weight of her rapist’s crime for the rest of her life, and he felt powerless to stop it unless he took drastic action.

Kumar’s choice to torture the man was unfortunate and has surely torn apart the family he was trying to protect. I understand why he did it. If India — and all nations around the globe — took steps to stop perpetuating rape culture and inflicted harsher punishments on convicted rapists, he wouldn’t have felt the need to take the law into his own hands.

According to the Indian Express, Kumar knelt beside the body of the man he had tortured and killed, and he wept. He then turned himself into the police.

He knew his actions were wrong. But at the end of the day, those actions are the fault of the justice system that he knew would fail his daughter, and the society that he knew would shun her.

Students compete to build Sparty armor The Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers hosted a Sparty costume/ armor building contest on Thursday night.

Teams consisted of two to five people who were given three hours to create a costume or suit of armor for Sparty with the recycled materials that were provided.

The top three teams received prizes or gift certificates from the Peanut Barrel, Espresso Royale and the Student Book Store.

The costume building contest is a part of SASE’s Spirit Week, done nationally by SASE chapters on campuses around the country.

“Basically it’s to get people excit-

ed about SASE and to promote the group on different campuses around the nation,” biochemistry and molecular biology junior Diana Xu said.

Xu is currently the president of the MSU chapter of SASE. She said they thought it would be cool to show school spirit by building costumes of Sparty since the event will fall right after Halloween.

Xu said they decided to use recycled materials as a way of being environmentally friendly.

“We thought it would be a good way to ‘go green’ in every sense of the word,” Xu said.

Jazz duet brings music to streets, bus stops

For professional violinist Matthew Pickart and professional double bass player Louis Rudner, making a jazz group is not all about the money and recognition but more for the creative experience of it all.

Both Pickart, an MSU graduate student, and Rudner, an MSU alumnus, came together early this fall to start a duet violinist group. The two met at a party at a professor’s house and decided to collaborate and start a jazz group. Rudner decided that he wanted to run a rehearsal with Matt not to try to find a gig but instead to find a place that’s fun and spontaneous — somewhere outside on the streets.

The duo are still in the process of experimenting with several genres, but have started to play club jazz styles with their different styles and instruments — like “old Duke Ellington type tunes,” Pickart said.

“It’s almost like the goal is to not have a genre but to produce music that feels good to us and feels good to the people around us,” Rudner said.

Rudner and Pickart said they chose to play near bus stops on Grand River Avenue because it takes away from the cultural snobbery that classical music or jazz music can sometimes be associated with.

They also said performing on the streets helps strengthen the connection with listeners. The two play by ear and perform covers, original pieces and sometimes improv.

“The bus stop is great,” Rudner said. “Honestly, it is one of my favorite places to play because you get to watch the reactions of people.”

Pickart said music is a tough business.

“We both just want to teach and play and feel rewarded for that because that’s what we love to do — we’re musicians,” Pickart said.

“It’s almost like the goal is to not have a genre but to produce music that feels good to us and feels good to the people around us.”
