From the Foundation Executive Director

O

ne of the best things about being the director of the SFCC Foundation is having the ability to serve the community. We open doors for people who might not otherwise have the opportunity to improve their lives through higher education.

It is why I choose to work at a community college, and that is precisely why I love the college’s new tagline, “It’s about community!”

I hear stories from past and current students impacted by faculty and staff who work(ed) at State Fair. While we undoubtedly have beautiful campuses throughout our 14-county service area, it is the people, faculty and staff, past and present, who make State Fair Community College special.

From the first day the college opened its doors in 1968, it has been our goal to put our students first. With that goal in mind, we cannot help but realize how important it is to serve our community.

In the pages that follow, you will find amazing stories of the wonderful people I am proud to call students, alumni, donors, and friends.

Their success is a testament to the quality education they received from the passionate faculty and staff at State Fair Community College. Some of those individuals generously give back to the college and help ensure the same opportunities are extended

to others. To those donors, I extend a heartfelt “thank you” on behalf of the college.

Your generosity will have a ripple effect for generations to come and will improve their lives and strengthen our community.

Barbara Cooney was one such person.

May her spirit rest within our hearts as we celebrate her and all she did for our community for years to come. Barbara gave back generously to the college and thanks to her, students of all ages will have the opportunity to explore the arts and discover their own passions, which will enhance not only their lives but also the lives of those around them – the community.

It is my hope that as you read this edition of Marathon and find inspiration in the stories of these amazing people, that you also will feel compelled to give back. Your gifts truly are an investment in our community, and there are numerous ways and opportunities to give this year. Whether it is on #GivingTuesday (Dec. 3), the global day of giving, or during our upcoming capital campaign, a drive to fund a new Workforce Innovation Center on our Sedalia campus, I can assure you that your generous gifts will improve the lives of students, strengthen families, and enrich our wonderful community.

Distinguished Alumni provided a diverse perspective to class discussions and was a positive influence not only to his classmates but also to his fellow student-athletes on the basketball team.

In his current position with Morgan Stanley, Doria is head of technology for The Americas Institutional Branch offices as well as for the Mexico and São Paulo offices. He joined Morgan Stanley as an associate in 1998.

Previously, Doria worked for PepsiCo, starting in Wichita, Kansas, and at Pizza Hut International before moving to Dallas, Texas, where he served in several technology positions.

Outside his Morgan Stanley responsibilities, Doria is president of Club Athletico Paulistano Fiscal Council and has served as president of the Technology Committee for the Association of International Banks in Brazil and as a United Way Brazil board member.

2019 Distinguished Alumni Award Recipient Celso Doria

C

elso Doria from Brazil, who just happened to have worn the #50 basketball jersey when he was a Roadrunner from 1991-1992, was selected as the 2019 Distinguished Alumni for State Fair Community College’s 50th graduation ceremony on May 17. Was it a coincidence? Doria says it was destiny.

“I am honored to be here to deliver this year’s commencement speech at State Fair Community College’s 50th anniversary,” Doria said. “Even though I only spent a few years in Sedalia, the impact on my life was gigantic.”

Doria described that at 26 years of age, he was living a “nice life in Rio de Janeiro” when he decided to come to the United States to refine his English skills and experience American college basketball, a sport he had played since he was a young boy.

“All of a sudden I became a nontraditional student at SFCC … my 4 Alumni and Friends Magazine

hometown of São Paulo has about 12 million people and I had experienced cities like Miami and New York, but I found the Mid-West where people are friendly, genuine and loving.

“Nancy Wakely, who was a librarian at SFCC, became a part of my life in Sedalia … she invited me to Thanksgiving dinner at her home, which was not a holiday I celebrated, but she insisted that I come, and that is where I met my future wife, Marcelle … I have celebrated Thanksgiving every year since then … it was destiny.”

Doria graduated from SFCC in 1992 with an Associate of Arts degree and then went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1994 from Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas. While at SFCC and Emporia State, Doria played on the colleges’ basketball teams.

Prior to attending SFCC, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Economical Sciences from the Universidad Mackenzie in São Paulo, Brazil.

During his college days at SFCC, Doria made a lasting impression on faculty and staff members. They were impressed with his desire to further his education by coming to SFCC as a non-traditional, international student. He

During his remarks to SFCC’s 50th graduating class, Doria shared some words of wisdom that have guided him to a successful life.

“It is never too late to make a change in your life. My first real job came when I was 30. It helps to be lucky ... but you need to be ready for when opportunities show up …

I strongly believe my success so far is a direct consequence of following three principles: be ethical and honest, always be a team player and do everything with a lot of passion.”

Doria resides in São Paulo with wife Marcelle and has three adult children.

The oldest, Alex, is a professional basketball player in Brazil; Lucas is a senior at St. Edwards University in Texas; and Juliana is a freshman at PUC University in Brazil.

SFCC’s 50th graduation ceremony ...

D

r. Joanna Anderson, SFCC’s fifth president, warmly greeted the graduation candidates, their families and friends and reflected on the college’s first graduating class of 1969.

“Graduates, as our 50th anniversary comes to a close, it is fitting that you are being recognized during our 50th commencement ceremony,” Dr. Anderson said. “Your commemorative tassel is unique and will never be part of SFCC’s commencement regalia again. It’s special. You are special, and this year is special for State Fair Community College.

“I want to give an idea of how far your alma mater has come during its 50year history. Our first graduating class included only 42 students. This year, 737 students are graduating and receiving 826 degrees.

“Our first commencement recognized 28 students with Associate of Arts degrees, 10 with an Associate of Applied Science and three with Professional Certificates. To this class of 2019, we are awarding 826 degrees, 457 Associate of Arts degrees, five Associate of Fine Arts degrees, 38 Associate of Arts in Teaching degrees, five Associate of Science degrees, 109 Associate of Applied Science degrees, 100 Professional Certificates, and 31 Skills Certificates.

“Thank you, family and friends, for your tremendous support that you have given these students and for the sacrifices, you have made. Your encouragement, comfort, shared hugs, and probably tears have been instrumental in your loved one reaching this milestone tonight. They would not be here without all of you.

“During SFCC’s 50-year history, one thing has not changed … that is the excellent instruction, caring support, student-focused leadership, and dedication of our faculty and staff. They are the reasons our programs are exemplary and our graduates are prepared for successful university transfer or have mastered the skills required for a rewarding technical career.”

The numbers Dr. Anderson cited include students who attend SFCC on the Sedalia campus and at locations in Boonville, Clinton, Eldon, Lake of the Ozarks, Whiteman Air Force Base, and online.

Earlier in the day, a commencement and pinning ceremony for Health Sciences graduates was held in the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center on the Sedalia campus. Jamie Ross, BSRT (R), director of Radiology at Carroll County Memorial Hospital, gave the commencement address.

A total of 161 Health Sciences students received degrees or certificates in these programs: Associate Degree Nursing, 54; Practical Nursing, 66; Medical Assisting, 8; Dental Hygiene, 10; Diagnostic Medical Sonography, 10; and Radiologic Technology, 13.

SFCC’s Adult Education and Literacy graduation was held on May 18 in the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center.

Participants who had passed the High School Equivalency exam or who had earned their United States citizenship were recognized.

Commencement was held on June 4 for students who attended classes on SFCC’s Whiteman Air Force Base campus in Knob Noster. Brian Bode, Park University chief financial officer, was the commencement speaker.

Cara Barth-Fagan, State Fair Community College’s Humanities and Social Sciences division chair and instructor, is the second recipient of the Outstanding Employee of the Year award that was presented to her on April 5, 2019.

ara Barth-Fagan, State Fair Community College’s Humanities and Social Sciences division chair and instructor, was named the Outstanding Employee of the Year recipient at the college’s annual Employee Appreciation Celebration (formerly Retirement and Recognition Dinner) held on April 5, 2019.

The award recognizes one employee who demonstrates excellence, fosters admiration among colleagues, holds high performance standards, and exemplifies the college’s mission.

Employees submit nominations to Human Resources that oversees the award process. This is the second year the award has been presented.

Barth-Fagan began working at SFCC in 2008 as an adjunct and then as a full-time instructor in 2010. In 2016, she was promoted to Humanities and Social Sciences division chair over general education classes and twoyear degree programs such as Criminal Justice, Early Childhood Development and Paraprofessional Educator. She is involved in numerous committees and teams and created the Student Missouri School Teachers Association Literacy Night for Pettis County preschool aged children that has been held since 2016.

Peer comments described Barth-Fagan as a servant leader and a role model for SFCC’s vision, mission and core values.

She embraces diversity and believes that every person has something to contribute. By setting goals, she strives for continuous quality improvement in and outside of the classroom for students and colleagues. Barth-Fagan is creative, fun and innovative as she develops and implements new ideas and methodologies to strengthen student success at SFCC.

“Education is about taking advantage of all of those opportunities you need to be successful in life” “Education doesn’t mean you have to have a bunch of letters behind your name,” says Tina Luper, AA, BS, JD. “It means you need to figure out what you need to be happy, and then figure out what education you need to fulfill that goal.”

F

rom her initial career as a secretary to an attorney with her own legal practice, Luper has found success with and without her impressive list of academic degrees.

“Education is about taking advantage of all of those opportunities you need to be successful in life,” she says. “So if you look at it from that perspective, it doesn’t matter what you want to be; it matters that you want to be something, and you want to be good at it.”

Losing her mother to a terminal illness at 16 and marrying high school sweetheart Donnie at 18, Luper was ready to enter the workforce right after graduation to begin a new life. The Secretarial Science Certificate she received from SFCC in 1989 gave her a career and a path because of the vocational credits she had accumulated in high school.

“It’s wonderful for high school kids to

take advantage of that program,” Luper says. “I just encourage all high school students who are seeking opportunities, whether to go for a two-year degree, a four-year degree, or do something in the trades. State Fair has programs that can enrich your life. They did that for me.”

In 1997, Luper accepted a position as a legal secretary for Steve Fritz and Laurie Ward, both of whom would become Luper’s mentors as their passion for the law captivated her interest. After years of professional and personal growth, Luper was ready for a new experience, and State Fair, which had prepared her for her first decade of fulfilling work, was the natural choice for the next step.

“It’s a great place to go if you want to learn,” she says. “The instructors there will give you every opportunity to enrich your educational experience as far as you want to take it. You have to be

willing to embrace a new experience, and you can grow as much as you want.”

A transferrable Associate of Arts, however, was just the beginning. She had many tough questions to answer moving forward, namely how would she afford higher education and how would it fit into her already packed schedule as a nontraditional student. While working full-time and raising two children, Luper had to figure out how to continue pursuing her goals.

“Not only did State Fair give me the learning environment I needed, but they [faculty] were very much interested in making sure I was a successful student who could segue into the professional community. Whatever my choice was, they were willing to get me to that next step,” Luper explains.

Her mentors at State Fair led her to William Woods University in Columbia, where she attended classes one night a week for 18 months to obtain her bachelor’s.

From there, Luper began the exhilarating, frightening and eyeopening experience of law school at Washburn University. Washburn demanded excellence of its students, and Luper found a new sense of purpose in the challenges.

“It was just the opportunity to help people who needed it, and to me, I think that is where I became most intrigued,” Luper explains. “For my analytical mind, it was very satisfying to be able to take someone’s problem, research the issues and find a solution so that they can move on.”

These educational institutions, Luper says, not only provided the grounds for personal and professional development but also ensured their students would continue thriving outside the classroom.

She says, “from State Fair to William Woods to Washburn, there’s one common thread that runs through all of those educational bodies, and that is the instructors, professors and staff are very much geared toward student success.”

Once she had been admitted to the Missouri Bar, Luper had to trust in herself and the quality of her training.

“I was terrified on a number of different levels,” Luper remembers of her transition from law student to attorney. “I will never forget it; my very first court appearance was for a very simple trial setting. It took less than five minutes, and my palms were sweating unbelievably.”

Luper’s true center of support is her family, whose encouragement was critical to making her education possible.

Luper had the same anxious experience when she first started as a secretary.

With any job, Luper explains, nerves arise from a combination of the unknown, as well as the expectations you set on yourself.

“My parents always told me nerves are good,” she says. “If you’re doing something important, you should have the nerves that require you to perform at your very best every time.”

After the first month, Luper earned her confidence in the courtroom, but she never lets herself get too comfortable.

She constantly adapts and builds off her strong educational base to provide the best service to her clients.

And Luper could not ask for a better clientele to serve.

“That’s one thing about the Sedalia area; the community is an incredible group of people who really do care for one

SFCC has had a tremendous impact on Luper’s family with her children following in her footsteps as students and her husband working as an art instructor at the Sedalia campus.

Luper understands that a supportive home life is not a reality for everyone.

“I feel for those students who are doing it on their own,” she says. “For them, I’d encourage them to take advantage of the support from the faculty at State Fair. It’s there. They just need the courage to seek it out. They will find a family at State Fair.”

Golden Gala Recap

Celebrating the past; embracing the future

M

ore than 400 people enjoyed an elegant evening of delicious food and fun at the SFCC Foundation Golden Gala on March 30, 2019, in the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center. The Golden Gala celebrated the college’s 50th anniversary and raised about $80,000 for college programs and facilities. The foundation has held this esteemed, signature event since 2009.

“As the executive director of the foundation, I have had the honor of being involved in many 50th anniversary activities,” said Mary Treuner. “The Golden Gala was the perfect name for celebrating a milestone year for the college. Thank you to all our friends for the support you have provided. May our years of serving our communities continue to be as ‘golden’ as the first 50 years.”

Anchors Away Soirée

G

et ready to attend the next SFCC Foundation gala that is set “to sail” March 28, 2020, in the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center on the Sedalia campus.

The evening will feature an array of “cruise ship” entertainment and live music and dancing after a delicious meal and the popular Dessert Dash.

The SFCC Foundation has set a fundraising course to support the college’s new Workforce Innovation Center that will expand precision machining and welding programs for SFCC and Career & Technology students and remodel space in Marvin R. Fielding Technical Center to increase capacity in other technical programs. The center and renovated space has been identified as a high need to grow and enhance our service region’s workforce.

Tickets will go on sale in February, so mark it on your calendars and plan to attend the Anchors Away Soirée for a shipload of fun for a worthy cause.

Barbara Cooney, a work of art

“If you ask me why I came to this world, I, an artist, I will answer you: I came to live out loud.”

T

o say that Barbara Cooney was passionate about art would be an immense understatement. To her, life inspired art, and art was sincerely life. Barbara found inspiration and motivation in art and dedicated her life to ensuring that others, especially the youth, experienced art in the same manner. Barbara believed that all people have a creative impulse within them, whether it is in art, music, dance, acting, or writing; they simply need an opportunity to express it.

Barbara was born in Sedalia Jan. 13, 1937, and graduated from Sacred Heart High School. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and Philosophy with a French minor from Maryville University in St. Louis and a Master of Arts in English from the University of Missouri in Columbia. In 1960, Barbara married James Owen Cooney. She taught French and English for 16 years at Smith-Cotton High School, and took many art classes at SFCC. Barbara and James became steadfast supporters of the arts at SFCC, in the community and across the country.

Barbara taught art classes for senior citizens and college students at SFCC.

She enriched the community’s artistic culture as a founding member of the Missouri Citizens for the Arts, the Sedalia Council for the Arts (Liberty Center Association for the Arts), the Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival, and the Sedalia Visual Art Association. She served on the Missouri Association of Community Arts Agencies board and was a founding member and past regional vice president of Missouri Citizens for the Arts. Barbara served in more than 14 organizations throughout the community, state and in her church.

In 1998, Barbara founded Camp Blue Sky, an achievement her family says was her most cherished accomplishment.

The summer camp offers a weeklong, theme-filled immersion into the arts, including visual, rhetoric, dance, theatre, and music for children in grades K-8.

Barbara interacted with thousands of

children who attended the camp over the last 20 years.

create the Thompson O’Sullivan Studio Theatre, a small black-box style stage at the Sedalia campus. The couple also sponsored SFCC children’s theatre and other performances for many years.

Barbara left a monumental imprint upon the hearts of many students, faculty and staff at the college. She played a strategic role in the birth of the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art on SFCC’s Sedalia campus and served on the Daum’s acquisition board and as a docent. She and James supported various exhibitions and educational programs such as the Daum Escape that has enriched thousands of children in west central Missouri since 2004. Barbara also chaired the Daum Endowment for Education that funds ongoing educational activities. In 2009, the Daum honored Barbara with the naming of the Cooney Gallery in the museum’s south upper-level exhibition area.

Arts STAR Award. The Sedalia Democrat published an article about Barbara’s accomplishment by the late reporter, Ron Jennings, who described visiting Barbara in her studio. Jennings noted a quote from Émile Zola at the entrance of her studio that read, “If you ask me why I came to this world, I, an artist, I will answer you: I came to live out loud,” and Barbara did just that.

There are several altars in my house … seedpods arranged on the kitchen windowsill, fragments of wrapping paper forming a collage, or words and phrases working themselves into a statement. It is my own intuitive way of honoring God’s creation."

Barbara left this world May 8, 2019.

There is no way of knowing how many lives she touched through her classes, camps, conversations, artwork, and her devotion to her community and SFCC. From the SFCC President Dear Alumni and Friends, Thank you all for the wonderful feedback and support over this past year following the release of the first issue of Marathon. The magazine was a tremendous success in many ways. Not only did we reach thousands of alumni and friends but the publication also received recognition from other community colleges across multiple states when it took the Gold Medallion (first place) at the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations Region 5 conference. I am very proud of those who contributed to that success and I am equally pleased with this second issue, as it honors a dear friend and very special person – the late Barbara Cooney.

Barbara was one of the first women to greet me, as SFCC president seven years ago, with open arms and a contagious enthusiasm for life and learning. She was a remarkable woman who loved art in all forms, was talented and creative herself, and brought into any space her beautiful and uplifting spirit. She was an amazing teacher. She was a friend, and I miss her.

This second edition of Marathon is full of stories about people who have and are making a difference in their workplace, communities and world. You’ll read about the accomplishments of SFCC alumni, faculty and staff, including those whose generosity provide resources to our college programs and scholarships for our students. The list of contributors is tremendous. We are immensely grateful to each donor. Your gifts make a real difference for SFCC and help students’ dreams of a college degree come true. Thank you! The people featured in this Marathon remind me of a line in Rolling Stones’ song, “Time Waits for No One.” “Hours are like diamonds, don’t let them waste.” These people understand the value of time and have seized opportunities to learn, grow and give. Homecoming

On June 25, 2019, more than 100 people gathered west of Hopkins Center to mark the closing of SFCC’s yearlong 50th anniversary celebration with the burying of a time capsule.

Nearly 100 items indicative of the college’s first 50 years were placed in the capsule along with letters from President Dr. Joanna Anderson and the Board of Trustee members.

“The Greatest Homecoming” was the theme as SFCC observed its 50th anniversary at the Feb. 16 homecoming event. Members of the 1998 women’s team were recognized and honored for reaching the National Junior College Athletic Association national tournament. Spirit Squad alumni performed with the current team. For the first time, Ron Sayer, former Music Arts program coordinator and instructor, led the attendees in singing SFCC’s Alma Mater and Roadrunner Fight Song, both of which were written by Sayer to commemorate the college’s 50th anniversary.

After Dr. Anderson and trustees Patty Wood and Randy Eaton spoke, SFCC’s leadership used golden shovels to cover the capsule until future leaders decide to open it.

Children in the crowd were encouraged to come forward to help bury the “legacy of learning” that sprung up 50 years ago. Eagerly, they came, took up the shovels and finished the job. No doubt, SFCC’s future is in capable hands.

Lauren Dowell ....

L

auren Dowell chose SFCC because she wanted to use her A+ scholarship and the Theatre program was nationally ranked.

“I wanted a small, close-knit, familyorientated school … and I found a home at State Fair. Everywhere I went there was a smiling face, and I knew it would be the perfect fit and environment for me to pursue my education,” says Dowell.

At SFCC, Dowell was a Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society member, SFCC Ambassador, and performed, directed and served as stage and technical manager for numerous productions. She was invited to compete at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF), Region 5, for several years and earned an offer for a summer assistant stage manager and acting ensemble position at North Dakota Shakespeare.

“One of my favorite memories at State Fair was when I got my stage management commendation from the KCACTF respondent for Dracula,” Dowell recalled. “It was such a good and proud feeling, and I knew that State Fair helped me accomplish that. Another one was after Women Playing Hamlet, Dr. Joanna Anderson, SFCC president, gave us all handwritten notes about how impactful our performance was. I still have that note. It was

so nice to go to a school where the president supports the students’ passions.”

Dowell credits instructors Tawnya Blades Reed and Jack Lee Hayes for giving her a desire for science and showing her how to learn. She also shared that Theatre faculty Kristen Henning, Tim Wells, Eric Yazell, and Kim Windle were all good and positive mentors during her time at State Fair.

“The faculty at SFCC love what they do, and it’s refreshing to see that, and it always made me want to learn. They were always ready and willing to help; you just have to ask!

“SFCC means home and the start of a dream for me, a foundation to build off, and it was the perfect start. It allowed me to transition into a bigger university and get comfortable with the idea of being away from home and the huge change that comes with college. SFCC will always hold a special place in my heart.”

Dowell graduated in May with an Associate of Fine Arts in Theatre degree and is now at University of South Dakota majoring in theatre studies with an emphasis in stage management and acting. Her plans are to follow wherever God leads her, pursue personal goals, work as a professional actor and stage manager, live in New York for a year, and radiate joy to people every day!

Brieanna Kroeger TRiO Success

FCC alumna Brieanna Kroeger received her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Missouri in May. She is doing a three-year residency in Columbia and hopes to practice in Sedalia as a pediatric doctor. Well done, Brieanna!

Brieanna participated in TRiO STEPS, an SFCC Student Support Services program for eligible students that provides a wide range of free services and opportunities for students who intend to earn a bachelor’s degree.

Gavin Jones drafted to Oakland A's

S

tate Fair Community College sophomore infielder Gavin Jones of Sedalia, saw a lifelong dream come true on June 5 when he was selected in the 27th round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the Oakland Athletics.

In the process, he became the first SFCC baseball player drafted since the resumption of the program.

“When I got a phone call earlier today, I got pretty excited,” said Jones. “Then it became pretty stressful, but overall it has been a pretty awesome day.

I’ve been playing baseball for as long as I can remember. It’s been a great time, and I have loved every second of it. I really appreciate all the coaches who have helped me out and all the friendships I’ve made because of baseball. It’s a dream come true.”

Jones wrapped up a stellar sophomore campaign at SFCC. He was named to the First-Team All-Region 16 as an infielder. He was selected as a member of the Region 16 Baseball All-Defensive Team at shortstop, and named to the Missouri Community College Athletic Conference All-Conference Team.

Jones also helped his team to the Region 16 Division I Baseball Tournament Championship round.

Jones led the team in slugging percentage (.602), home runs (12), hits (54), runs scored (43) and RBI (50).

He led SFCC with 100 total bases and 21 extra-base hits. Jones finished second on the team with a .325 batting average and 10 stolen bases.

“State Fair means a lot to me,” said Jones. “I went there with hopes of helping to build the program. I really appreciate everything State Fair Community College has done for me, including all of my teachers, Coach Kindle, and all the other coaches who helped me throughout this process.”

Coach Kindle is proud of what Jones has accomplished.

“Gavin has worked his tail off,” said Kindle. “He definitely deserves a chance to go live his dream and play professional baseball. I think he is more of a corner infielder at the professional level, but catching might also be an area that he can pursue. I am just extremely proud to have coached him.”

SFCC Foundation mini grants give life to ideas The SFCC Foundation began to offer mini grants (up to $5,000) in 2018 to support faculty and staff ideas that would help the college reach its 2020 Vision priorities. Consequently, more than 30 applications have been submitted. The first four awards were announced this past January, and the second round of awards were announced in August. Thanks to the foundation, faculty and staff are able to fund projects that improve student success and improve systems and processes for stakeholders across the campus community.

With the use of radiographic film disappearing, today’s students need equipment to view diagnostic images. To meet this need, Young was able to purchase a high-resolution monitor, computer and printer. The monitor allows students to clearly view diagnostic images and apply critical thinking skills to better analyze radiographic images.

Preparing highly skilled dental hygienists requires an abundance of hands-on experience with the right tools. Grant funds purchased a Piezo Electric Dental Hygiene machine to give students experience using industry equipment before entering their profession. The program also was able to purchase additional cavitron tips and instruments to allow more hands-on experience with this equipment and a dental highspeed fiber optic handpiece to enhance the supervising dentist’s ability to demonstrate patient care.

Dara Bigler, SFCC-Clinton director Improving the learning environment for web conference courses was the goal of Bigler’s proposal. Mini grant funds purchased dual monitors and adaptors, Jabra pod/pucks and web cameras to improve the visual and audio quality to enhance interaction between the instructor and students across campus locations. These courses increase access and decrease expenses by combining low enrollment courses across locations.

Yvette Sweeney, Student Success director Some students are not able to acquire all their general education textbooks at the beginning of a semester for various reasons, which puts them at risk of falling behind in their coursework. Sweeney’s proposal requested funds to purchase two sets of select textbooks that the Donald C. Proctor Library could loan to students to fill that gap and help students stay on track.

Nancy Theisen, Business Office accounts receivable specialist Many people do not carry cash, which makes it inconvenient for them to purchase items while attending various SFCC events. Theisen’s proposal addressed this problem by requesting funds to purchase a mobile register that accepts credit/ debit cards for easy payment. The mobile register will improve customer service and sales at different student and college sponsored events.

Lisa Adams, English instructor Strong reading skills are essential for learning, critical thinking and confidence building.

To help students who struggle with reading, Adams requested funds to purchase tools, computer applications and technologies for volunteer tutors to use when working with students who want to build reading skills and develop thinking and communicating skills. The goal is to increase student retention and success.

Cendy Harrell-Carson, Criminal Justice program coordinator and instructor Simulating the effects of driving while intoxicated, drugged or distracted is a powerful educational tool for future law enforcement professionals and for promoting public safety. Harrell-Carson’s proposal will be used to purchase equipment with simulation features that can be used in the classroom and in the community.

Scholarships give students a brighter future!

T

he most heartwarming and inspiring celebrations the SFCC Foundation hosts are the annual scholarship luncheons in April where students meet the people who established the scholarships that have helped them pay for college and reach their educational goals. For many, those scholarships have changed the course of their lives and their families toward a brighter future.

This year, more than 200 people attended two luncheons. One was held at Lake of the Ozarks in the home of John and Lynn Farrell of the John Farrell Real Estate Co., who are active supporters of SFCC at the lake. Lynn serves on the SFCC Foundation Board of Directors and both are board members of the Genuine Country Music Association that hosts the annual Classic Country Jamboree at the lake that has raised over $100,000 for students who attend the SFCC-Lake of the Ozarks campus.

“Education is very important, but it is also very expensive,” said Lynn Farrell. “John and I are committed to helping students around the lake have the opportunity to pursue a college education.”

SFCC has provided comprehensive higher education at the Lake of the Ozarks for more than 35 years. Since 2013, SFCC has served 3,943 students in Camden County.

At the Sedalia event, Jillian Herigon and Joseph Booth shared their educational journeys with the attendees and how receiving a scholarship has made a tremendous impact on their lives.

Herigon received the Ewing Endowed Scholarship that is for students pursing an agriculture degree. She graduated in December 2018 and has transferred to University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg.

Booth received the Sarah and Charles Patterson Endowed Scholarship that is awarded to students who have earned a High School Equivalency Certificate and attend SFCC to earn an associates degree. With the help of the Patterson Scholarship, Booth was able to graduate this past May with an Associate of Applied Science in Radiologic Technology.

SFCC Nursing programs ranked #1 again in Missouri

S

tate Fair Community College was notified this past spring the college’s practical and registered nursing programs have been ranked #1 in Missouri by two prominent nursing advocacy organizations.

“Nursing workforce is critical to the health of any community,” said Dr. Rhonda Hutton Gann, dean of Health Sciences. “It is nice to see State Fair Community College’s nursing program so highly respected by these organizations.”

PracticalNursing.org and RegisteredNursing.org assessed the college on several factors that represent how well a program supports students toward licensure and beyond. Past and present first-time NCLEX-PN pass rates were used to select the top 20 programs in Missouri.

The news followed the announcement last fall that the college was expanding the nursing program to its Clinton campus, bringing the locations to three with programs already available in Sedalia and Eldon. ”We are excited to be able to expand our program to the Clinton community and surrounding areas with a superb RN program that will have such a positive impact on the area’s nursing workforce," said Hutton Gann.

PracticalNursing.org has been publishing annual rankings since 2014 and Registered Nursing.org since 2016. Both organization’s goal is to provide students with transparency and information that can help them make the right choice when selecting a nursing school.

The Nursing program opened at the Clinton campus this fall with 11 students.

Keller served in Desert Storm. He started working at the Sedalia Democrat in 1965 and became circulation manager in 1973.

In 1974, he was elected to membership of the Midwest Circulation Managers Association. In 1980, Keller joined the staff of the Denver Post in Colorado where he worked for 26 years.

Keller has been married to Beverly (Kueck) for 55 years. They have four children, eight granddaughters, and five great- grandchildren.

We remember Duane Edwin Brodersen Nov. 6, 1936 – Sept. 12, 2019 Brodersen devoted 31 years to educating students as a teacher, coach, principal, and superintendent besides serving four years as Benton County Presiding Commissioner and operating the family farm. He touched lives in Prairie Home, Otterville, Lowry City, Lincoln, and Sedalia, where he served as an SFCC Board of Trustee from 1990 to 2002.

Robert L. Solomon Jan. 16, 1932 – Oct. 25, 2019 In 1968, Solomon become a charter member of the SFCC faculty teaching biology. In 1972, he was appointed Dean of the Arts and Science division, where he served until his retirement in 1994. Solomon was named an Outstanding Educator in 1970, selected for the Dean’s Academy in 1987 and was twice chair of the instructional dean’s section of the Missouri Community College Association.
