ongratulations to all winners and finalists! Whilst each year the Wyndham Business Awards unveil and promote business excellence in our city, this year is something just a little bit extra special. I am absolutely honoured to be Wyndham City Mayor as we celebrate the 25-year milestone since the awards were first initiated. Whilst there are many factors that contribute to the longevity of any program, the ongoing development and growth of the Wyndham Business Awards has been underpinned by the passion and commitment of our business community in striving to make our city a great place to live, work, play and visit. Other critical success factors in delivering our awards program have been the valuable contribution of our sponsoring partners, the commitment and specialist knowledge of voluntary and independent judging panels, the expertise and passion that Council’s Economic Growth Team manifest in the delivery of the event and the support of past councillors and my colleagues that comprise the current council. And just like the Awards, Wyndham continues to grow; not just in terms of population but also in terms of the economy with the City now contributing 25 per cent of the Gross Regional Product of Melbourne’s west. With a number of exciting and highly visible developments emerging, together with our existing businesses that quietly and unassumingly generate a significant level of economic activity, Wyndham continues to boast one of the highest job growth levels in Australia. Notably, in a fiveyear period, jobs in Wyndham grew by more than 50 per cent. As we celebrate business excellence at the 25th Wyndham Business Awards let us reflect on the positive impact that our 17,500 businesses contribute to the growth of a sustainable economy and a strong and vibrant community. asabene Excavations and Drainage has a long history of business within Wyndham. It was established in 1960 by Michael Casabene and is today owned and operated by his son Pip. Casabene specialises in excavation, drainage, drain cleaning, repairs, plant hire, transport and contracting. The management team at Casabene has a strong focus on staff development and retention, sharing the understanding that their staff are the future of the business. Casabene has recently received their Environmental Management Systems Certification and is constantly looking at ways in which they can protect the environment and reduce their impact. For example, the company has installed 100,000-litre underground recycle rain water tanks, filter recycling bins, steel recycling bins and waste oil tanks.

Casabene has a long history of supporting fellow local businesses, none more evident than sourcing their excavator buckets from a local manufacturer despite being able to source them cheaper from overseas imports.

Born and raised in outback Australia, Jacquelene Brotherton is a highly successful professional executive with 48 years’ experience in the road transport industry, including livestock, general and refrigerated transport and fleet management. Aside from her current role as Transport Manager with Oxford Cold Storage, Jacquelene is the Co-Chair of the Wyndham Industrial Liaison Development (WILD) Committee and was instrumental in the allocation of funds for the $53 million upgrade for Dohertys Road.

PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD SWEET STREET DESSERTS Sweet Street Desserts was opened in Wyndham a year ago by bubbly young entrepreneur Joey Spiteri. The business was born after Joey hopped on a plane and ate his way around America, returning with a big idea and a passion for all things sweet. Introducing funnel cakes and a range of sweet dessert options that are available late at night has proven to be popular, with the business attracting customers locally and from across Melbourne. Customer service is at the forefront of everything the Street Sweet Desserts team does, from the way their customers are greeted to the experience that is offered and the quality products. Recently the team and its loyal customers celebrated Sweet Street Desserts’ first year in business, with a birthday event raising funds for the Mercy Hospital.

Branthem Creative was established in 2016 by co-owners Dene Menzel and David Small with the aim of delivering unique services to the corporate sector through music, team building and staff awareness campaigns.

Women’s Health Hub is a female-focused medical centre that opened in Hoppers Lane, Hoppers Crossing, in 2018.

Since then, Branthem Creative has evolved into a digital creative agency with ‘Branthems’ as their flagship service. Branthem Creative focuses on surpassing expectations and producing great results for its clients. Business owners Dene and David are active participants in local business networking groups, including BNI. Branthem Creative also regularly assists with large-scale social give-back projects including an awareness campaign for the International Day of Peace and International Women’s Day.

The all-female team at Women’s Health Hub cater for female-specific health issues throughout all life stages as well as providing general health care for the entire family. The medical centre started with five doctors and 1500 appointments per month. Today, some 12 months later, Women’s Health Hub has 11 doctors and more than 3600 appointments are available each month. The number of staff and specialists has also increased significantly. The impressive purpose-built facility within the Wyndham Medical and Service Centre has strong environmental benefits including a 5-Star Green Star rating and 5-Star NABERS. Other environmental features include the use of recycled water for toilet facilities, sensor lighting to save on power, and measures in place to ensure the clinic is as paper free as possible - with a plan to be paper free in the near future.

Katelyn is an incredibly impressive young business person. At such a young age Kate has established a successful business, showing a great deal of dedication, sacrifice, relationship skills and financial common sense.

Dene and Dave are focused not just on their clients but ensuring that their clients understand their themed music is what will appeal to their customers. Having been a previous finalist in this category, Branthem Creative was able to quantify the business growth that has taken place in the past year and the focus on where it is heading and what it wants to achieve in the next 12 months. We’re sure that in the future we will be hearing more from Branthem Creative.

Opened in May 2018, this business has seen exponential growth over the past six months which is partially due to the dedication, vision and management style of the Practice Manager, Laura Robinson. Going from 1500 appointments to 3600 a month within a year can be attributed to the specialist nature of this business. Incorporating the local community into the business, supporting and mentoring staff, and implementing sustainable efficient practices make this business a worthy winner of this award.

The story of Circus Fit Studio started in 2015 when lifelong friends Joanne and Yvette identified a gap in the market to provide formal training in Circus Arts. With a purpose-built facility in Hoppers Crossing, Circus Fit Studio prides itself on providing a unique and safe learning environment for its students.

Daniel’s Donuteria was established in 2015 but at that time was named Daniel’s Bakery. Then in 2016, the current owners - a husband and wife team - took over and renamed and rebranded the business in line with the ever-popular donut and café offerings.

In 2018 Circus Fit’s premises at that time were becoming too small after the business experienced a rapid growth in student enrolments and birthday party bookings. As a result, Circus Fit Studio relocated and now operates in a larger purpose-built facility which allows them to run classes simultaneously with two studios under the one roof. Having 20 students when they opened their doors in 2015, the studio now enrols close to 500 students, hosts up to three birthday parties a week and has recently introduced an entertainment agency arm to their business aiming to assist elite students with sourcing job opportunities.

The team at Daniel’s Donuteria believes that the best form of marketing is word of mouth and so ensure that every customer who walks into the store leaves happy and satisfied with the products and service they receive. With a social media following of more than 77,000 and more than 200 donut flavours, it’s little wonder that there was demand for the store to trade 24/7 from Thursday to Saturday. The popularity of the store, along with excellent business management, will see the doors open to the second Wyndham store very soon. Constant innovation and a passion for continuous improvement, combined with good old-fashioned service, suggests Daniel’s Donuteria will continue to grow and service the sweet tooths of Wyndham and beyond.

OFI WEIGH AND INSPECTION SOLUTIONS OFI Weigh and Inspection Solutions develops, builds and supports product inspection machinery for the food and logistic sectors. These products include weighing systems, metal detectors and x-ray inspection machines. OFI was established in 2016 with a main goal of offering excellent service and products that help customers increase productivity and reduce contamination in food products. A strong commitment to staff development has seen OFI technicians travelling to Korea, New Zealand, China and Queensland for professional development training. Management regularly assigns new tasks to staff members along with training support to deliver new projects that they may not have had the skills beforehand to deliver.

What the judges said:

The owners of Circus Fit Studio share a passion for the business and have a clear and defined business plan for the future. They have a vision for the long-term success and sustainability of the business including staff development, investment in all areas of the business and a marketing strategy that is already proving successful. Their continued focus on learning and development of their staff has allowed former students to make significant progress.

This business has come a long way in three short years: growing a product range which evolves all the time, as well as customer numbers, staff numbers, sales and profits. So much so, they have already saved enough capital to purchase and fit out their next site. Very impressive!

Alex Fraser is a long-standing Wyndham business with a 140-year heritage. Alex Fraser is a supplier of construction materials and one of the country’s biggest recyclers. Each year, the business recycles more than three million tonnes of concrete, asphalt, sand and glass for use in infrastructure projects in Wyndham and beyond. Established almost 10 years ago by a husband and wife team, Damoli Forklift Services continues to innovate and grow its business to provide customers with the best possible products and service experience. The business takes pride in providing its customers with a comprehensive service experience by getting to know their requirements and offering them solutions to best suit. With a name for every forklift, the team at Damoli takes great pride in its 180-strong fleet and ensure that they are looked after as well as staff members. Damoli has also demonstrated a commitment to environmental sustainability by implementing software to replace or reduce paper within the office.

The Alex Fraser site in Laverton is a state-of-the-art facility that employs 118 people. To date, more than 200 kilometres of roads throughout Wyndham have been built from Alex Fraser recycled materials, much of which is sourced from wheelie bin waste collected from Wyndham households. Since 2009, Alex Fraser Laverton has been responsible for diverting almost 10 million tonnes of waste from landfill to build greener roads throughout Wyndham. It has implemented several initiatives to lessen its impact on the environment. For example, materials are moved on a conveyor network rather than by heavy machinery and the business has invested in hybrid technology such as earth-moving equipment that recharges itself. Mains water consumption has been reduced by 98 per cent by harvesting storm water from neighbouring industrial estates and capturing their own.

Director Anthony Pante established the business in 2002 with a van, an apprentice and a vision. Anthony concentrated on producing quality work, building trusted relationships and offering opportunities to proactively develop his apprentices’ knowledge and skills. Aqua Tap demonstrates a strong commitment to the local economy with 100 per cent local employment, local subcontractors and local business advice/consultancy, and 95 per cent of supply from local suppliers. Aqua Tap is also actively involved in the Wyndham community, providing support to several local sporting clubs and community groups, and hosting work experience students from local secondary schools and tertiary institutions.

It’s a company that is always looking at systems and processes to improve the way it does things, in fact the entire business seems to have an insatiable thirst for continual improvement. It has a unique business model for employment and has recently built a training facility for apprentices and senior trades, which holds workshops twice each week, every week, for ongoing training and professional development.
