Models are a twin act Point Cook twins Deng Deng and Garang Deng are making their mark on the modelling industry. The brothers, 22, were among 30 young finalists in the Top Model Australia national final, which was held last weekend. Garang and Deng, who stand 6’5 tall, said they wanted to inspire other young people. Deng helps to run a program which encourages young people to talk to their parents about mental health issues. “I want to inspire youth within the community, to show that no matter where you come from or your gender, there are lots of opportunities out there and you can do anything,” he said. Garang said: “I want to be able to help the community too, it’s something that I love to do.” While both enjoy modelling and photography, Garang is also interested in clothing design. Deng hopes to pursue acting and basketball professionally. He plays for Melton in the Big V and has appeared in a Dialogue Theatre show starring South Sudanese community members. Leaking roof bill mounts By Alesha Capone Wyndham council is preparing to spend up to $7.5 million to fix the leaking roof at Eagle Stadium in Werribee. The $47 million stadium had been plagued by a leaking roof since it was built about four years ago, forcing the cancellation of sports games on days of heavy rainfall. A financial report released by the council last month stated: “Legal avenues for compensation are still being pursued for Eagle roof”.

The council’s director of city operations Stephen Thorpe, said the council has engaged an independent structural engineer to provide an expert opinion on the causes of the leaks. “He has recommended options to fix the roof permanently and council has now called for tenders for a team to carry out those works,” Mr Thorpe said. “In this financial year, up to $500,000 is budgeted to cover the interim measures and design for the permanent works. “We’ve planned for up to $7 million to

complete the permanent works in our draft budget 2020-21, however this will not be known until the designs are completed.” Mr Thorpe said that while the design work was underway, and as the wetter months approached, the council was implementing further interim measures “to minimise leaking and the impact on our community”. “Council appreciates the frustrations of the community/users of the facility and that’s why we have been looking at the best ways to minimise disruptions in the short term, while

taking the necessary steps to resolve the issue permanently,” he said. “Our priority is to ensure the roof stops leaking permanently, and once the issue is resolved we will then consider steps to recoup costs.” More than 600 people have signed an online petition calling for a permanent fi x to the leaking roof at Eagle Stadium. The petition was started at Change.org by Wyndham resident Joe Williamson, during June last year.

Toxic soil fight gains traction By Esther Lauaki The fight against a toxic dump in Wyndham is picking up traction with hundreds of protesters expected to bring Watton Street to a standstill. A tractor convoy through the centre of Werribee was planned for Tuesday night as part of an ongoing protest over a proposal to dump contaminated soil at a Wyndham Vale stabling yard. Community organiser Lisa Heinrichs told Star Weekly that people wanted to send a clear message to the government that the soil is “not welcome in Wyndham”.

In neighbouring Bacchus Marsh, more than 400 people vented their frustrations at a town meeting last week over a bid by Maddingley Brown Coal to receive the contaminated soil from the West Gate Tunnel project. At the meeting, representatives from the Wyndham Vale group pledged their support to the Bacchus Marsh community’s case. Ms Heinrichs said that Wyndham activists were keeping watch for any activity at the Hobbs Road rail yard site where the group plans to establish a blockade in coming weeks. “We are doing a lot of work behind the scenes in planning a number of blockades and if the

government does not do right by us … there will be more blockades to come,” Ms Heinrichs said. Werribee resident Joseph Zanatta said the government had an obligation to use the 82-hectare stabling yard “for the wellbeing of the community”. “By not informing the whole community of the toxic nature of the soil and possible effects both on health to people, fauna and flora and environment, Tim Pallas [and the state government] … have demonstrated their arrogance and utter contempt for the community,” Mr Zanatta said.

Mr Thompson, who now lives in Point Cook, said the Dodge Coronet featured in the royal vehicle entourage when Queen Elizabeth visited Wagga Wagga during 1954. He said he enjoyed going on outings in the car with other members of the Werribee & District Collectable Vehicle Club, as well as participating in displays at aged care homes and the annual Show and Shine.

Last year about 200 cars were at the show. The Car Show and Shine will be held from 9am-4pm on Saturday, March 15 in the rear carpark of the Wyndham Civic Centre. The event will feature raffles, trophies, food and trade stalls, and children’s entertainment including face-painting. Russell Thompson’s green 1950 Dodge Coronet will be among the many impressive vehicles on show when the Werribee & District Collectable Vehicle Club hosts its annual Car Show and Shine. Mr Thompson said he purchased the Dodge Coronet – one of just six which were imported to Australia – while living in Wagga Wagga, eight years ago. “The car still has its original paint but I had to rebuild the engine and brakes and re-pad the interior,” Mr Thompson said. Across the weekend, police officers from the Westgate Highway Patrol will be out in force for Operation Arid, which runs from Friday, March 6 to Monday, March 9. Sergeant Marty Wallace said police would be targeting the main causes of fatalities and serious injuries in crashes, which are excessive speed, driver distraction, not wearing seatbelts, fatigue and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Sergeant Wallace said that in order to avoid fatigue, drivers should plan their trip, be patient and ensure they take at least a 15 minute break every two hours. RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council chairman Jim Giddings said speed was a contributing factor in most road crashes. “Therefore, stay within the speed limit and drive to suit the conditions you face,” he said. “Speeding affects both the risk of a crash happening and the severity of injuries sustained when a crash does happen.” Mr Giddings says the work of his group, along with initiatives such as Operation Arid, would hopefully reduce the number of serious road crashes recorded during the Labor Day weekend. Three men from South Yarra, Hoppers Crossing and Tarneit have been charged after police intercepted a car on Flinders Street on Sunday, February 23 at 3am. A search of the vehicle and its occupants resulted in police allegedly finding a number of items including 40 credit cards, an extendable baton, a machete, a torch taser, a quantity of ice and a quantity of heroin. The three men, aged 40, 37 and 25, were charged with a number of offences including possessing the proceeds of crime, handling stolen goods, possessing a prohibited weapon and possessing a drug of dependence.

Bags and jewellery stolen Designer bags and accessories worth more than $200,000 were stolen from a house in Montpellier Drive, Werribee on January 18. Two men allegedly broke into the house by forcing a rear door. The burglary was reported to police when the occupants returned from holidays nearly two weeks later and found their home had been ransacked. Investigators have been told approximately 20 designer handbags, including Louis Vuitton and Prada brands, were stolen, along with a diamond engagement ring valued at $80,000 and a $40,000 Rolex watch. Police warn online sellers By Alesha Capone Police have warned residents of a “notable increase” in thefts and assaults linked to online and social media marketplaces. Senior Sergeant Aaron Riches said police in Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong have seen an increase in people posing as potential buyers of items which are advertised on buy, swap and sell sites. He said the offenders – who were often males using fake names – asked the sellers to meet in places such

as parks, residential addresses and secluded locations during the afternoon or evening, then stole the item being offered for sale. Senior Sergeant Riches said the thefts sometimes resulted in the victim being assaulted, usually being pushed or punched. He said there had been reports of incidents in suburbs including Williams Landing, Tarneit, Braybrook, Altona North, Manor Lakes and Point Cook. Since the start of the year, there had been “a significant ramp-up” in the incidents, he said.

“It’s always a concern for us and we’ve thrown significant police resources at it,” Senior Sergeant Riches said. He said police advised anyone selling items online to use a platform such as eBay, which offers built-in protections for buyers and sellers. He said it was also safer for sellers to mail items to buyers, rather than meeting them face-to-face. Senior Sergeant Riches said that if a seller requested to meet, the buyer should arrange to see them in a public place with CCTV, such as

a police station foyer, fast food outlet or petrol station. He also advised people to take a friend to the meet-ups, beware of overly amicable sellers and maintain communications through the online selling platform, rather than mobile phone SMS messages. He said police were working with councils to educate multicultural communities on ways to avoid becoming a victim; were being interviewed on multicultural radio stations to raise awareness; and were including safety tips in presentations at schools and universities.

School savings a bonus Werribee mother Jade Gonzalez says participating in a program which helps families save for back-to-school costs has given her a confidence boost. The Saver Plus program, which was developed by the Brotherhood of St Laurence and ANZ, sees participants set a savings goal for school costs, make regular deposits into a savings account across 10 months and complete financial skills workshops. At the end of the program, their savings are matched by ANZ, dollar for dollar, up to $500. The Smith Family delivers the program in Wyndham. Ms Gonzalez said she was able to buy new school supplies and clothes for her two children, six year-old Patricia and nine year-old Antony, with the savings she made while involved in Saver Plus. Ms Gonzalez said taking part in Saver Plus had left her with a feeling of achievement. “It teaches you to save, which is the most

important thing,” she said. “The classes are really good, and include more information about how to be more financially savvy.” Ms Gonzalez said much of the coursework was similar to advice contained in the The Barefoot Investor book by Scott Pape, such as paying small debts first and being mindful of apps which advertise “buy now, pay later”. Ms Gonzalez said she had never imagined being able to save a deposit for a house, but the lessons she learned in Saver Plus had changed her mind. “Now I’m able to save, it’s put in my mind that maybe I can get a house one day, and given me a boost of confidence,” she said. Councils unite for rail solutions By Esther Lauaki â€œClogging upâ€? already over-crowded train lines is not the way to improve services west of Melbourne, according to Wyndham council. The council has united with Geelong council in calling for improved train services across the west. It comes as the state and federal governments finalise plans for the multibillion-dollar airport rail link which is expected to pave the way for high-speed trains to Geelong. Three proposals are being considered for the airport link, with the preferred option using

existing railway lines between Melbourne CBD and Sunshine and the new Metro Tunnel. Geelong mayor Stephanie Asher said the councils want a rethink of the proposal. Cr Asher said adding extra trains to over-crowded existing lines would derail any prospect of fast and frequent services to the western region. â€œFast and frequent rail services to Wyndham and Geelong have the potential to significantly impact the long-term liveability of our regions, opening up employment and education opportunities and allowing our residents to spend less time on the train,â€? she said.

Festival of colours Thousands of people are expected to attend the colourful celebrations of Wyndham Holi 2020 this weekend. The traditional Indian celebration, also known as the festival of spring and the festival of colours, will be held at Presidents Park. The festival, which involves communities from diverse cultural backgrounds, aims to spread the message of peace and harmony. The alcohol free, family-friendly event will feature dancing, performances, food, childrenâ€™sâ€™ rides, games, music, a DJ and market stalls. Coloured powders will be thrown as part of a colour run. Attendees will be able to explore the culture and traditions of Holi, and support local businesses and community organisations at the event. The festival is organised by the Victorian Cultural Association Australia, a not-for-profit

organisation which aims to provide major community events in the west. The festival is supported by Wyndham council, the Victorian Multicultural Commission and the state government. Wyndham Holi will be held on Saturday, March 7 from noon to 9pm, with fireworks scheduled for 8pm. Entry to the event is free and parking will be $5. â€œThe [preferred] proposal for the Melbourne Airport Rail Link â€Ś would put extra trains onto already over-crowded tracks between the CBD and Sunshine. â€œThis would devastate the prospects of achieving desperately-needed faster and more frequent services to Melbourneâ€™s west and regional Victoria. Our trains are already slow and overcrowded, and will only get worse without action.â€? Wyndham mayor Josh Gilligan has been vocal in advocating for increased train services. â€œItâ€™s astonishing that instead of having more services added, weâ€™re clogging up the tracks,â€?

Cr Gilligan said. â€œAs our population continues to soar, we need other tiers of government to back us and deliver the infrastructure we need.â€? Both councils are calling for: â€˘ Two new electrified metropolitan rail lines through the western suburbs to Melton and Wyndham Vale, separate from the Geelong and Ballarat lines. â€˘ Increased track capacity between Sunshine and Melbourne. â€˘ Electrification of Geelong and Ballarat lines. â€˘ Connection of the Wyndham Vale and Werribee lines. â€˘ A clear timeline and funding for these works.

Two more level crossings to go By Esther Lauaki Work will start in less than six months to remove level crossings at Old Geelong Road in Hoppers Crossing and Werribee Street in Werribee. The state government last week confirmed designs for the two projects and announced a combined $355.5 million package to deliver the works. A rail bridge will be built over the Werribee Street level crossing. At Hoppers Crossing, a new road bridge will be built, creating a direct link to the Princes Freeway. The existing Old Geelong Road level crossing will be closed to traffic, with a new overpass and forecourt built near Hoppers Crossing station to create a safe, pedestrian-friendly public transport and shopping precinct. Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly said the works would mean commuters would no longer face queues while waiting at level crossings. “We know how important good access is to Hoppers Crossing station and local businesses, which is why we’re building a new pedestrian overpass to make the precinct safer and more accessible for those on foot or on their bike,” she said. At Werribee Street, a rail bridge will connect to the existing tracks and allow for future growth, such as the planned Suburban Rail Loop network improvements which will connect Wyndham Vale and Werribee. Raising the rail line between Werribee Racecourse and Werribee River aims to create new open space. A temporary track will be built to ensure important freight services can continue to run during construction. Mates’ story in the frame Point Cook’s Zane Borg and his mates had some epic stories to tell – so they decided to roll them all into a film. The 21-year-old writer-director of the upcoming feature film, The Library Boys, said he and a few friends, all from the western suburbs, wanted to create “an honest portrayal of the Aussie adolescence”. “The film was an entirely self-financed production, shot around my childhood home in Point Cook with the support of our community, friends and family,” Borg said. “It is an autobiographical story about my own experiences in high school that I put to paper when I was 19. “When I was in high school I had these two best mates, James and Mitch, and we weren’t the best students but what we did have was a tonne of great stories. “So I decided to put them all into a film. “In that transition of being a teenager and being an adult, there’s so many ups and downs

Band Scarlet Chaser is set to release a new album later this year. The group is made up of Tim Shaw, Andy Medancic and Gavin Shanks, who live in Werribee, Tarneit and Melton. On Tuesday night I spoke at the community rally against soil from the West Gate Tunnel Project being dumped in Wyndham. Plea on flower thefts By Alesha Capone Volunteers from the Victoria State Rose Garden in Werribee South have appealed for visitors to refrain from stealing flowers. The garden, which was established 38 years ago, is managed by Parks Victoria and tended by volunteers. It is home to about 5500 roses. The garden is a popular tourist destination but it appears some visitors are wanting a more lasting memento. The rose garden’s official Facebook page last month asked visitors to refrain from picking flowers.

Diabetes centre to open A high-tech diabetes research facility will open in Hoppers Crossing. The new Clinical Trial and Research Centre, run by researchers and clinicians from Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute, opens this month and will trial lifestyle interventions to reduce soaring rates of diabetes, obesity and heart disease. One trial under consideration will include the use of avatars to assist people with heart failure and cognitive deficits to care for themselves in their home. New devices, apps and technology will also be on trial in a bid to better prevent and manage the condition. Baker Institute director Tom Marwick said Wyndham had one of the highest rates of diabetes and obesity in the state with 57.9 per cent of residents overweight compared to the state average of 50.8 per cent. “If we can support people to avoid a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes or help them to manage their heart disease so that they don’t suffer another heart attack or stroke, then this approach could become a model for high-risk communities across the country,” Professor Marwick said. Professor Marwick said the centre would build important links with industry, universities and the biotechnology sector, serving as a test beacon in disease prevention and progression. Barramundi, a big-scale business By Alesha Capone Barramundi means big business in Werribee, which is home to the world’s largest barramundi hatchery. MainStream Aquaculture runs a selective breeding program, with the aim of creating the world’s best barramundi, at its Lock Avenue site. The company’s head of sales and marketing Jess Tale said that the program focused on producing the healthiest, most robust fish possible. It is the largest supplier of barramundi fingerlings in the world, distributing them to barramundi producers in 25 countries. The Werribee headquarters are home to Australia’s largest warm-water recirculating aquaculture system, with eight tanks holding 600,000 litres of water each. The business also produces table-fish barramundi, under the brand name Infinity Blue Barramundi, and supplies live and chilled fish to food service and retail markets. “Eighty per cent of the barramundi fish you eat [in Australia] are bred here,” Mr Tale said. “A third of the world’s barramundi are born here. This facility is capable of producing 1000 tonnes of barramundi per year.” For comparison, the global barramundi industry produces about 10,000 tonnes of fish per year. Mr Tale said the company built its facility in Werribee after a long nation-wide search. One of the things which made the site more attractive is a large aquifer – an underground lake – located below the area. Water in the aquifer travels to Werribee from below the Macedon Ranges, moving about one centimetre per year, filtered through land and rock. MainStream Aquaculture drills about

Mr Tale said the water was free from industrial and biological pollutants, such as bird droppings, which can carry diseases. “The other special thing about the water here is that it’s geo-thermically warmed and heated by the Earth’s crust, it’s 29 degrees,” he said. Werribee’s proximity to Melbourne was also taken into account. “We can get the super-fresh fish to the market and they’re alive in the morning and

on a plate that afternoon, or the next day, that’s quite incredible,” he said. Mr Tale said that MainStream Aquaculture has about 62 employees across its sites, including a pond farm in Queensland, with about 50 staff based in Werribee. “We’ve got a lot of really highly-trained people here, like doctors … most of the people have a degree in aquaculture or marine science,” he said. The work of MainStream Aquaculture is not going unnoticed – officials from the Australian

Open were so impressed when they visited the business, that it was selected to supply fish for tennis players’ meals at this year’s event. “They came here and loved what we were doing, and said the fish would be perfect for the players,” Mr Tale said. The company was also asked to supply three rare, gold-coloured barramundi to display inside a tank, in the players’ lounge at the open. “I think it was fantastic, not many international tennis players knew what barramundi is, but they do now,” Mr Tale said.

Wyndham land prices fall By Alesha Capone The median lot price in Wyndham remains the highest across Melbourne’s northern and western growth areas, despite a four per cent drop in the three months to December 2019. A report issued by RPM Real Estate Group last month stated Wyndham’s median lot price fell to $310,000 between October and December last year. In comparison, Melton’s median price fell to $292,000 and Moorabool to $240,5000.

The RPM report stated there were 534 lot sales during the December quarter in Wyndham – a one per cent increase from the December 2018 quarter. “The volume of unsold stock across the western growth corridor remains considerably higher than other areas, surpassing 2500 lots,” the report stated. “The majority of overhang lots are in Melton and Wyndham and is starting to apply downward pressure on prices.” RPM’s head of communities, Luke Kelly, said

now was an opportune time for buyers to enter the market in Wyndham. “As a buyer, the best time to get into the market is right now,” he said. Mr Kelly said the median lot price in Wyndham was the lowest median price seen in the area in the past 12 months. In the December quarter, the median price for a 400 square metre lot was $284,750 in Manor Lakes, $288,500 in Mambourin and $300,500 in Wyndham Vale. The median price was $305,000 in Werribee,

$315,000 in Tarneit, $336,900 in Mount Cottrell and $350,000 in Truganina. Mr Kelly said that in December, the median size of lots sold in Wyndham dipped below 400 square metres to 395 square metres. The RPM report stated that “poorer affordability is driving a shift in buyer preference to smaller lots”. Mr Kelly said buyers were attracted to the west due to its amenity and infrastructure, including road networks and schools, “which are improving every day”.

Fast foods dominate Wyndham By Alesha Capone Researchers have found that Melbourne’s outer suburban areas, including Wyndham, are turning into “food swamps” dominated by unhealthy eating outlets. Deakin University has published a study which tracked the development of Melbourne’s food retailers between 2008 and 2016, comparing “healthy,” “less healthy” “and “unhealthy” outlets in inner ring, middle ring and outer ring municipalities, plus the city’s fastest-growing municipalities of Wyndham,

Whittlesea, Melton, Hume, Casey and Cardinia. Healthy food outlets were categorised as greengrocers, butchers, supermarkets and salad bars; less healthy options as places such as bakeries and delis; and unhealthy options included fast-food chains, takeaway shops and convenience stores. The study compared the density of food outlets per 10,000 population in the four types of areas. The study, published last month, found that the urban growth areas “had the least healthy

food environments”. The research discovered there were between 40 to 50 “unhealthy” outlets per 10,000 of the population in Melbourne’s growth municipalities, compared to between 20 to 30 “unhealthy” outlets in inner city areas. The study’s leader, Cindy Needham, a PhD candidate in the Global Obesity Centre at Deakin’s Institute for Health Transformation, said Melbourne was turning into a “food swamp”. “A food swamp is an area where unhealthy food retail outlets dominate the landscape compared to healthy options, making it

Serving up new courts Two new concrete tennis courts are being installed at the Little River Sports Reserve. Wyndham council is constructing the new courts, to replace the reserve’s two existing asphalt tennis courts, as part of a $450,000 upgrade. The council is also installing new drains to help prevent flooding; creating new pathways leading to the courts; building a new fence and landscaping the court’s surrounds. Wyndham’s sports development portfolio holder Cr Peter Maynard, said the upgrades would ensure the historic Little River Tennis Club continued to flourish. “Little River Tennis Club was established all the way back in 1880, when the Little River Sports Reserve was built,” Cr Maynard said. “Many of the club’s members have been playing at this reserve for the past five decades, with countless competitions and happy memories forged here.

Charges over roadside dumping A 25 year-old Tarneit man is set to appear in court later this year, after being charged with dumping concrete slabs alongside roads around Melbourne. The Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA), Victorian Building Authority, Mornington Peninsula Shire council and Department of Transport were alerted to the dumped concrete last year, and the EPA launched an investigation during September. The accused man was charged and bailed at the Footscray Police Station last month, to appear at the Frankston Magistrates Court on July 8. The man was charged with dumping industrial waste under the Environment Protection Act 1970. The charge relates to a number of incidents where large concrete slabs were dumped on roadsides. New environment laws will take effect in Victoria on July 1 this year, introducing a general environmental duty requiring businesses and individuals to prevent harm to the environment and human health. The EPAâ€™s southern metro regional acting manager, Megan Vallas, said: â€œEPA continues to investigate the involvement of other parties in these incidents and we urge members of the public, or persons within the building and disposal industries, to come forward with any information by calling 1300 EPA VIC (372 842).â€?

Basketball court to be moved By Alesha Capone A Tarneit basketball court will be relocated, following complaints about anti-social behavior from nearby residents. Wyndham council will spend $161,000 to relocate the Seasons Park basketball court in Highland Place to Baden Powell Reserve. Baden Powell Reserve is located about 500 metres away from Seasons Park, on the opposite side of Tarneit Creek.

The council’s Director of City Operations, Stephen Thorpe, said the basketball court at Seasons Park was located close to residential properties. “In the past two years, council received complaints from nearby residents about the court being used late at night as well as some anti-social behavior,” he said. Mr Thorpe said that in response, the council erected signs at the Seasons Park court outlining its conditions of use, such as that it

was only to be used from dawn to dusk. The signs also asked park users to respect nearby residents. “Unfortunately, the behaviour continued, so council undertook community consultation proposing the relocation to Baden Powell Reserve, which supports active recreation activities and includes facilities such as public toilets,” Mr Thorpe said. “The idea of using the old court for off-street parking was raised, however it was not

supported in our community consultation, so it will be returned to open space with lawn and garden beds.” The Seasons Park basketball court is about 1.6 kilometres away from Ecoville Park in Cindia Crescent, Tarneit, which regularly featured in the media during 2017, after becoming subject to regular vandalism and anti-social behaviour. Help is close at hand A not-for-profit organisation dedicated to addressing the welfare needs of the Indian community in Victoria is providing culturallyappropriate assistance on topics including family violence, drug and alcohol use, employment and visa issues. IndianCare, which is based in St Albans, conducts much of its work across Melbourne’s west and southeast, which have a high population of residents from an Indian background. IndianCare’s family violence prevention co-ordinator, Chandana Rao, said the organisation regularly ran workshops, events and programs aimed at family violence prevention, education and awareness. Ms Rao said IndianCare has also established partnerships with organisations such as Womens Health West. “Effective partnerships have also been established with community leaders from grudwaras and temples, Indian groups, sporting clubs, senior clubs, etc, to reach a wider proportion of the community,”

An IndianCare LDAT (Local Drug Action Team) project worker, Gagan Sohi, said the organisation was running a risky drinking prevention program in Wyndham, funded by the Alcohol and Drug Foundation. Ms Sohi said that recent immigrants to Australia from India, could face a higher prevalence of risk factors including low levels of social cohesion, unstable housing, unemployment and poor mental health, factors which could contribute to alcohol misuse. “Some sections of the Indian community have cultural practices that make it normal to drink at risky levels,” she said. “It can worsen here due to the easy availability of alcohol, cheap prices and peer pressure.” She said the western LDAT team has partnered with the Indian Seniors group Club 60 Tarneit, the Brothers & Sisters Foundation and Wyndham Social Cricket League. VCAT ticks Truganina development By Alesha Capone Plans for 22 dwellings to be built in a Truganina court have been approved by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. The decision, issued by VCAT member Tracey Bilston-McGillen last month, allows for five single-storey, 11 two-storey and six three-storey dwellings to be built at 6 Blake Court. The three-bedroom dwellings and a 300 square metre communal open space, will be built on a 5622-square metre site.

The developers initially applied to Wyndham council to build 24 dwellings on the land, but have since amended the plan to 22 dwellings. The council refused the development on a number of grounds, including concerns that “overdevelopment” of the site would have a detrimental impact on the amenity of surrounding properties. Ms Bilston-McGillen said the council agreed that the site should be developed, but it was concerned about the “intensity” of the proposed plan. However, she said the combination of single, two and three-storey dwellings “offers a

Ms Bilston-McGillen said that council was also concerned that three-storey homes would be “foreign to the area and out of character with the neighbourhood”. She said the six, three-storey townhouses would be built in the centre of the development. “In this case, due to the limited street presence and the siting of this three storey form, I find there is little impact,” she said. Ms Bilston-McGillen said she would grant a permit for the development, with conditions including that an amended waste management plan be submitted and approved by council.

Baby, what a year It doesn’t take a leap of the imagination to see how cute the babies born at Werribee Mercy Hospital on Saturday are. Seven infants were born at the hospital on Saturday, which fell on the leap year day of February 29. The seven youngsters have joined a club which only 0.07 per cent of the global population belong to. Of those born at Werribee Mercy on Saturday were Mikayla Jane Armstrong, Thomas Senior and Esther Rosa Gonzalez Perez. Mikayla is the first-born child of Trent and Stephanie Armstrong, of Werribee. Mikayla was born one day later than expected, at 4.01am. “I wanted a leap year baby,” Mr Armstrong said. “It’s a special day for a special little girl.” For Rachel Daborn and Ben Senior, who are also first-time parents, Thomas arrived nine days after his February 20 due date.

“We live in Port Melbourne,” Rachel said. “But we wanted to deliver our baby here at Werribee Mercy Hospital because up until recently, I worked here at the hospital as a midwife and I really wanted to have my baby with all of my friends around me.” Esther’s mother and father, Santiago and Claire, said they would likely mark their daughter’s birthday on February 28, every three out of four years. Landfill levy set to increase By Alesha Capone The state government’s landfill levy is set to rise under plans to reform the Victorian recycling system. The levy, which is paid by tip operators and councils to the state government, is set to increase from $66 per tonne to $126 per tonne over the next three years. A statement issued by Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said the government would progressively increase the landfill levy over the coming years, to bring it into line with other states.

“Victoria’s landfill levy is significantly lower than our neighbouring states, meaning Victoria is too often used as a dumping ground for waste coming from New South Wales and South Australia,” the statement said. The Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) welcomed the state government’s recycling reform plan, including the introduction of a container deposit scheme and four bins for each household. However, MAV rural deputy president Ruth Gstrein said the state government would need to work closely with councils, industry and others to achieve

best outcomes for the community. “The decision to increase the landfill levy isn’t unexpected,” Cr Gstrein said. “Our main concern is that the money raised through the levy is invested back into the resource recovery system.” The Australian Industry Group’s Victorian

head, Tim Piper, said the higher landfill levy would increase costs at a difficult time, including for businesses in the recycling industry. “Raising the costs of recycling will impede the important task of raising levels of recycling in Victoria because it will make recycling less profitable for the industry,” he said. Wyndham council city operations director Stephen Thorpe said: “Council will be working through what an increase in landfill levies means for Wyndham City and our ratepayers in the coming weeks.”

Eye care for new arrivals By Alesha Capone Volunteers at the Wyndham Community and Education Centre are seeing better after getting their eyes checked at a Werribee optometrist. The volunteers, who came to Australia as refugees from Burma, participate in traditional weaving activities at the centre, which is also known as the WCEC. The centre’s settlement services coordinator Richard Dove said he arranged for 12 of the volunteers, aged between 55 to 65 years old, to have their eyes checked at Insight Vision Care. Mr Dove said he organised the check-ups after representatives from the Handweavers and Spinners Guild of Victoria, who teach the volunteers new ways to weave, noticed some of them were struggling with their eyesight. “A lot of the refugees lived in a jungle environment and most never had access to eye care, so they could be living with cataracts, which may be treatable, and may even be partially blind, when they come to Australia,” he said. Mr Dove said after he approached Insight Vision Care about conducting the check ups, they agreed to bulk bill the appointments through Medicare, even though they usually do not do this. He praised the efforts of Insight’s optometrist Daniel Farrugia and manager and dispenser Lisa Summers in working with the volunteers. “They were very patient and generous,” Mr Dove said. He said the volunteers each had a 45-minute appointment, and that WCEC caseworkers also attended the sessions, to interpret between the medical staff and weavers. Mr Dove said the check-ups detected that one volunteer had a scar on the inside of their eye, while another had cataracts.

Educational first for nation Educators at a Wyndham Vale childcare centre are the first in the nation to participate in a professional development program, which aims to boost children’s readiness for school and increase their talking interactions. The centre, Adventurers, is using technology developed by the LENA charity in the United States, which is dedicated to accelerating language development in children from birth to age three, in order to improve their social and emotional health and to close opportunity gaps. The Lena Grow technology sees children at the centre wear small recorders – also called talk pedometers – to monitor their verbal interactions, one day per week. After the recordings have been processed using LENA software, educators can participate in professional development coaching sessions to learn ways to increase the amount of talking they do with children. This in turn, helps with children’s brain development. Adventurers is using the talk pedometers in its baby’s and toddler rooms. Adventurers owner Matthew Gillet said educators were enjoying the opportunity to improve the “language experience” for children under their care. “We’re very excited to be using LENA Grow to ensure that Adventurers children will be ready for school,” he said. “Language environment has an impact on vocabulary, reading ability, IQ and even the speed of a child’s brain – all important things for school readiness.”

Traffic jams and drink-driving offences marred Werribee’s first hosting of the third annual Harvest Picnic on Sunday. Tempers of the estimated 60,000 strong crowd flared in the warm summer weather as motorists were trapped in four hour jams stretching 12 kilometres from the Werribee Park venue to Skeleton Creek.

Residents of Fontain Court in Werribee’s Edwards Park estate last week won their fight to stop a dual occupancy development – comprising four units – being built in their street. The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) blocked the Wyndham council-approved development finding “that (the units’) appearance will be detrimental to the amenity”.

While there was widespread relief following the defeat of the state government’s proposed growth areas tax, Wyndham landowners fear it’s not dead and buried yet. Under the proposed legislation, those who purchased properties inside an expanded urban growth boundary around Melbourne’s fringe were to be slugged $95,000 a hectare when selling land.

MY WYNDHAM Werribee’s Patrizia Accoglienza and Melinda Hall, who count photography, videography, web and digital marketing design among their talents, run a business together called Photozigner. They chat with Alesha Capone. You both live in Werribee? Melinda: I was born and raised in Werribee, I’m now 32 years old. Patrizia: I was also born in Werribee, moved to Queensland at 14 and then moved back to Werribee at 24. What do you like most about the area?

Patrizia: Both my parents and their families migrated from Italy to Australia in 1962 and came to live in Werribee. Back in the day, Werribee had its own Italian community. I’m now 43, so I have seen Werribee grow over 43 years. I feel central to most things. I like day trips to Geelong, the city and the variety of beaches that are close by. It’s good for my photography. I love to just pop down to one of the numerous coffee shops for breakfast, I feel Werribee is becoming very trendy. Melinda: I’m a bit artsy so I love the wine and cheese festival event at Werribee Mansion. I also have used other parklands and even an abandoned house in Werribee South for a concept photoshoot. There are some interesting areas around and after a little exploration, or a tip from friends or family, you’re always bound to find something you didn’t know was there.

Melinda: The accessibility to mostly anything. Parks, beaches, the city, the countryside, other towns that are close by, a few train stations. I love that Werribee and its surrounding area is so central to anything that you need or want.

Patrizia: I shoot mostly landscape photography. Campbells Cove is my favourite place to photograph, K Road cliffs, Werribee South, Werribee Mansion, Altona Pier and the city. You also travelled around Asia and eastern Europe for seven months, creating a travel vlog? Patrizia: I have been on three long trips with Melinda. I love being able to capture different

images from different countries all over the world as well as taking in the culture. Vlogging was definitely a great experience but lots of hard work too. It took up most of our time, which distracted us from photography and design so we did decide it wasn’t for us. Melinda: The vlog, The Photozigner Journey, was our major project that made us really understand each other’s strengths and weaknesses when it comes to working together.

We have pivoted the Photozigner business a little more toward our skills and interests, focused on event and design services. It’s a new challenge for us. Patrizia: We have only been back a little over a month and wanting to focus on the freelance work. We both have projects in the works that are focused on photography and design. SAUCE 1 tbsp instant coffee 300ml boiling water 3/4 cup brown sugar 2 tbsps Dutch cocoa METHOD Preheat oven on CircoTherm to 180°C and lightly grease 6 x 200ml individual ramekins. Sift flour, cocoa and caster sugar into a mixing bowl. Whisk melted butter, egg, vanilla essence and buttermilk together. Putting the fun in fun run Combining a passion for the community and exercise, Kate Scholtens is an avid participant in, and event ambassador for, parkrun Australia this year. Although she calls herself a ‘back of the pack’ runner, parkrun enables Kate to enjoy running, supporting the community and socialising all at the same time. With nearly 300 parkruns and 100 volunteers to her credit, Kate’s love of parkrun is infectious as she joins the community and families coming together each Saturday for the free 5 kilometre event. Kate advocates an active lifestyle for any age and believes that the local community has an important role to play in bringing people together in that pursuit. From parkrun, Kate has formed an association with the Point Cook Runners, which has led to her becoming president of the group. Although initially hesitant to join a running club, as they are for ‘fast runners’, Kate found the social and inclusive group supportive and rewarding for runners of all ages and abilities. Living an active lifestyle in the community has provided Kate with ongoing health benefits, memorable experiences and lasting friendships. VEGETATION MANAGEMENT NEAR OVERHEAD POWERLINES

Wyndham City Council has contracted Citywide Service Solutions Pty Ltd to Manage its Vegetation Electrical Line Clearance Program. As part of this program, the street trees and powerlines are inspected regularly to ensure no impact to power supply through conďŹ‚ict with trees. All vegetation maintenance work is required to be carried out in compliance with the Electrical Safety Act (Electric Line Clearance) Regulations 2015. These regulations stipulate a minimum safe clearance between trees and powerlines, to keep re-growth clear of power lines. Wyndham City Council is responsible for management of power line clearance in the area highlighted in the map below. The tree works in this area will be carried out over the next four months. Regular auditing occurs throughout the year. All works will be conducted in accordance with the Wyndham City Council Tree Policy 2015. There seems to be more questions than answers for Werribee ahead of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association finals starting on Saturday. Will the Tigers bare any scars of past failed finals campaigns? Are their recent disappointing results – three losses in the past four matches – a truer indication of their form or just slight missteps? Tigers captain-coach Tim O’Brien acknowledged the need to address these questions and more, but he will not be consumed by looking too long into the rearview mirror ahead of a qualifying final with Altona at JK Grant Reserve on Saturday. “I’m fully confident we can put it together in the next couple of weeks,” he said.

Werribee fell to fourth on the ladder over the final two weeks of the season. The Tigers missed their chance of a home final with a five-wicket one-day loss to Williamstown away on Saturday. Goal bonanza lifts United By Lance Jenkinson

Max Burgess has been a driving force for Western United in the second half of the season.

A Max Burgess-inspired Western United broke out of its goalscoring slump in a rampaging 6-2 win over Central Coast Mariners in the A-League at GMHBA Stadium in Geelong on Sunday. Burgess played a stunning role on an extraordinary afternoon for United, which ended a three-game goalless streak with a six-pack for the goal-thirsty supporters. The story of the day was Burgess, who not only scored for the first time in his 45-game A-League career, but finished the game with a hat-trick. Even more remarkable, Burgessâ€™s triple treat of goals all came in the first half, within 18 minutes of each other. Burgess broke his career goal drought in the 25th minute through sheer persistence. A nice ball from Alessandro Diamanti was cut off by Mariners defender Kim Eun-sun, but the clearance only trickled to Burgess, who unleashed a low and hard ball from outside the box into the bottom corner. After waiting just under 4000 minutes for his first A-League goal, Burgess only had to wait five more for his second. The 25-year-old powered home from an acute angle on the back of some nice distribution from winger Connor Pain. Burgess completed his hat-trick two minutes before the break, pouncing for a tap-in after striker Besart Berishaâ€™s shot hit the woodwork. A keen follower of the A-League growing up, a hat-trick was a dream come true for attacking midfielder Burgess. â€œIt was a little bit surreal to be fair because I used to be one of those little kids in the stands, so it was probably a moment to cherish,â€? he said.

Soccer Truganina Hornets have bowed out of the FFA Cup at the first round stage. All the Hornets had to show for their toil in a 4-1 loss to Old Camberwell Grammarians at VU Sporting Complex on Saturday was a 75th minute goal to Yak Yak. A late season surge has secured Werribee Giants promotion to Baseball Victoria’s top flight. The Giants will take the elevator straight to the top tier irrespective of their finals outcome after finishing the division 2 regular season on top of the ladder. Giants player-coach John Curnow was delighted to tick the first box on the to-do list. “We are going to let our hair down a fair bit,” he said after the game. “But everybody knows there’s more work to do, so tomorrow will be recovery and then we’ll focus on what we’ve got to do for the first semi-final. “The good thing is we can focus everything on winning now, rather than trying to get promoted to division 1.” Werribee took hold of top spot on the penultimate weekend of the season. The Giants did not let it out of their grasp, securing first place with a sweep of Bonbeach in a three-game series. A 3-1 win in game three at President’s Park on Saturday was the clincher for the Giants. “I’m rapt with how we performed today to get over the line,” Curnow said. “We had a couple of blokes out, but we’ve got enough depth that we didn’t even notice that today.” The best part for Werribee is that its top two pitchers were shielded from having to work on the mound. Trent Pantalleresco did the bulk of the pitching, throwing seven quality innings for the concession of one run, while Curnow pitched in relief. It meant Wes De Jong, who will start game one of the semi-final series against Malvern, and schedule game two starter Josh Lee, will be fresh entering the finals.
