Battle lines drawn By Esther Lauaki Toxic waste is not welcome in Wyndham. That’s the message that furious residents want to deliver loud and clear when they take to the streets next Tuesday to protest a government proposal to dump contaminated soil from the Westgate Tunnel at a Wyndham Vale stabling yard. A tractor convoy will lead protesters down Watton Street in a bid to derail the proposal to use the stabling yard to temporarily dump some of the Transurban project’s PFAS soil. “We want to let the state government know that if they pursue this, we will not allow their trucks to enter,” community organiser Lisa Heinrichs said. Hundreds of residents have signed a petition against storing the toxic soil anywhere in Wyndham and a human barricade of the Hobbs Road rail yard is also planned. More than 300 residents attended a community meeting last Wednesday to map out a course of action. Werribee MP Tim Pallas was booed by community members when he unexpectedly showed up at the meeting. He maintains that the Wyndham Vale site will only be a “back-up” solution. But Federal Lalor MP Joanne Ryan broke Labor party ranks last week and opposed the Transurban proposal saying she was not satisfied with the planning. Ms Heinrichs said one of the first calls to action will be a local rally in a bid to give the government “an opportunity to back down”. “There has been no community consultation thus far … this is a government-owned site that does not need local council approval,” she said. “We have great cause for concern that we will be unaware of any movement of soil being dumped on site. “We believe that of utmost importance would be to organise a barricade of the site. “We can’t have any of it rumbling through our suburban streets. “Ballan Road is the only road to this site … these trucks would have to travel through Werribee, Wyndham Vale and Manor Lakes past our homes, schools and our childcare centres.” The state-owned 82-hectare site, which backs onto the heritage-protected Werribee River, is just 70 metres from houses and abuts land for planned housing developments and four schools. Mr Pallas told the meeting the Wyndham Vale site was only a temporary facility. “There are a range of sites being considered for the ongoing storage of soil – none in the electorate of Werribee – but the Wyndham

Vale stabling site may be used as a temporary facility in rare instances,” Mr Pallas said. “This would be entirely safe, and would only be temporary for a number of days until the soil is moved to where it needs to go.” Ms Ryan said: “Following discussions [with residents], as well as a long history as a community activist, grassroots campaigner and the federal representative, I have decided not to support Transurban’s toxic soil plan for the community I have called home for my entire life. “I am not satisfied that we are hearing talk of plans for extenuating circumstances when
there is no plan detailing the final disposal or treatment facility. “I am not confident the back-up plan being discussed will have the safety measures in place to protect people and … the environment. “Transurban and their construction partners need to come to the table, listen to our community’s wishes.” The community fight comes more than 20 years after thousands of Wyndham residents led a three-year campaign which resulted in the state government scrapping plans for a toxic dump and waste management precinct. Four bin plan rolled out statewide Households across Victoria are set to get a fourth bin to dispose of glass under a new recycling scheme announced by the state government. The plan is part of efforts to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill by 80 per cent within a decade. The state government will provide $129 million towards the Recycling Victoria initiative, but it remains unclear whether the full cost of introducing the new bins will be borne by councils, residents or the government. The state’s new bin system will comprise bins with a purple lid introduced for glass recycling; bins with a green lid for food and garden organics; bins with a yellow lid for plastic, metal and paper recycling; and bins with a red lid for household waste. A statement issued by the state government said that by collecting glass separately, “we can make sure more of it is effectively recycled – with jars and bottles transformed multiple times into multiple different products, including new roads and footpaths”. It also stated a separate glass collection would make the recovery of other recyclables simpler. The roll-out of the new bins is expected to start next year and happen gradually – informed by the needs of local communities and existing council contracts. There will also be special arrangements for remote regional households and people in apartments, to ensure everyone gets access to the new four bin system. Wyndham council’s director city design and liveability Ludo Campbell-Reid, said: “Wyndham City Council welcomes any initiative that reduces waste from landfill, as outlined in our Waste and Litter Strategy 2016-2040. “We look forward to seeing the detail of the proposal.” The state government’s Recycling Victoria initiative will also include the introduction of a container deposit scheme, to begin by 2023. earnings from fees and fines were lower than expected. The council’s city operations director Stephen Thorpe, said the drop in fines revenue could be “explained by a reduction in offences, especially parking offences”. “Motorists have changed their behaviour and
our officers are not finding as many illegally parked cars,” he said. “Council officers will, wherever possible, explain to residents why there are laws controlling parking, planning permits, building sites, and responsible pet ownership, and how they can make sure they are complying with these laws. “This fresh approach has changed residents’ behaviour for the better and, as a result, reduced our fines revenue.” Mr Thorpe said that while the council would “continue this positive approach”, there were

“some areas where we will not hesitate to issue fines for unsafe behaviour”. “We will continue to take a zero-tolerance approach to residents parking unsafely around schools; to companies breaching building site safety; to truck owners parking too long on residential streets; and pet owners failing to register their animals,” he said. “We will be clamping down strongly on those flouting these laws. “Because we are intensifying our vigilance in these areas, we expect our fines revenue will increase in the current financial year.”
WorkSafe probes asbestos find
Water park makes a splash All Jubilee residents will receive a membership to the water park via the estate’s homeowner’s association. The water park was designed by Baldasso Cortese architects and built by McCorkell Constructions. Leisure facility management company Bluefit will operate the water park and will conduct aquatic-based programs, such as a year-round Learn to Swim program for children and adults. Lotus Living’s general manager Daniel Smith said the delivery of Jubilee’s water park marked “a significant milestone” for the community. “We are extremely proud to have successfully delivered this state-of-the-art facility to
our valued residents within 18 months of construction commencing,” said Mr Smith. “Our commitment is to create a unique community for current and future residents at Jubilee, and the completion of Club Jubilee One is the first step in our journey towards building a community with true heart and soul, whereby our facilities act as a central hub for residents to meet and socialise.” The Jubilee estate will eventually comprise 7000 dwellings, plus a 5.4-hectare town centre with retail and commercial space, a 1.2-hectare neighbourhood centre, employment zone and 77 hectares of parkland. The nation’s first privately-owned indoor water park has been opened in Wyndham Vale. Developer Lotus Living opened the doors of the $15 million water park at the Jubilee estate on Saturday. Named Club Jubilee One, the water park features a three lane 25-metre lap pool; a large leisure pool with an area for learning to swim; a toddler pool with splash pad and waterplay areas; two indoor waterslides; and a junior fun zone with water cannons, ground sprays and water spurts. A fully-equipped gymnasium with a separate group class training room has also been built, to allow residents to participate in fitness classes such as yoga.
WorkSafe is “making inquiries” into the discovery of asbestos in a pile of earth at the Sanctuary Lakes Golf Club. A WorkSafe spokesman confirmed the investigation to Star Weekly last week. Employees of WorkSafe visited the golf club, after asbestos was found in piles of earth used to create an amphitheatre around its perimeter. Radio station Bay FM reported earlier this month that the golf course closed its driving range after the discovery of the asbestos on January 30. The station said that a non-friable asbestos was discovered in a “small” piece of linoleum in the earth. A letter sent to nearby residents and golf club members did not specify the exact size of the asbestos-tainted linoleum. Non-friable asbestos, also known as bonded asbestos, means that the asbestos fibres in the product are held within a solid matrix, such as cement in asbestos cement sheeting. Non-friable asbestos is not likely to become airborne, unless the product is damaged or has deteriorated. The letter also said: “Note that EPA and WorkSafe find no immediate risk of health to anyone using the range or living close by the range.” In addition, the letter said security cameras and additional lights have been installed at the golf club. Sanctuary Lakes Golf Club and the Environment Protection Authority Victoria were contacted for comment.

Ram raid investigation Detectives are investigating a ram raid which occurred at a Hoppers Crossing service station about 3.50am on February 15. A male offender drove a Toyota HiAce van through the front windows of an Old Geelong Road fuel outlet and stole a number of cigarette packets before fleeing. Police described him as Caucasian, with a solid build and was wearing a black and white jumper with white writing on the sleeve, a blue face covering, black pants and red gloves.

Dream role for Vivien Hoppers Crossing actor Vivien Davies says performing in Billy Elliot the Musical is a dream come true. The musical, which is being staged at the Regent Theatre until April 19, is based on the popular Billy Elliot film. Three men charged with murder

By Alesha Capone Members of the Werribee & District Collectable Vehicle Club are helping to keep the Holden legend alive. General Motors, which owns the iconic brand, this month announced it would cease production and sales of Holden cars by the end of this year. But three members of the Werribee vehicle club – president Colin Pierce, safety officer Charlie Cook and Brett Murray – are keeping their historic Holdens on the road.
All three men have a personal connection to Holden. Mr Pierce worked as a supplier to Holden, while Mr Murray worked at the General Motors Holden site at Fishermans Bend, in the experimental engineering department, during the 1970s and ’80s. Mr Cook worked as a dealer at Fisher’s – now known as Ballan Holden. Mr Pierce is the proud owner of several Holdens, while Mr Murray owns a 1951 SX Holden and Mr Cook owns a 1956 FJ Holden. The men said they were sad to hear about the end of the Holden brand.
“Holden was a uniquely Australian brand, we designed them, we tested them, we built them,” Mr Murray said. He said that when driving his yellow Holden, members of the public often waved and honked at him. “Everyone says, ‘My dad had one,’ or ‘My husband had one’.” The Werribee & District Collectable Vehicle Club will host a Show and Shine on March 15 at 9am, at the Wyndham Civic Centre carpark, 45 Princes Highway, Werribee. Three men have been charged with murder, following the death of 24-year-old Werribee man Ilaijah Kuru. Mr Kuru died after he was allegedly assaulted by three men outside St Paul’s Kealba Catholic School, near Fox Street and Sunshine Avenue, about 6pm last Thursday. Three St Albans men – one who is aged 20 and two aged 22 – were arrested last Friday. The men faced Melbourne Magistrates Court last Friday and were remanded in custody. They will return to court for a committal mention on June 26. Police said the incident is linked to an earlier alleged road rage, assault and theft, which occurred about 4pm last Thursday on Walters Street, St Albans. Since Mr Kuru’s death, social media has been flooded with tributes to him, with one relative describing him as “a loving family man and a beautiful soul”. A fundraising campaign set up for Mr Kuru’s family has raised more than $6000. Police would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the alleged assault on Mr Kuru, or the earlier alleged road rage incident, including anyone who may have dashcam or mobile phone footage. Firey anger over station inaction By Esther Lauaki Truganina CFA was promised a new station – but three years on, firefighters are still “sitting in a tin shed�. Construction of new, permanent stations at Truganina and Wyndham Vale were announced with much fanfare by the state government in 2017 and were intended to be operational by June last year. Last week Captain Mark Hatton said he and his crew were “sick of waiting�. “To date, nearly three years later, we don’t even have the land on which to build,� Captain
Hatton said. “Our concerns stem from our commitment to deliver our part of the area’s fire services to our community in the years ahead. “This is difficult to achieve when the brigade doesn’t know where it will be, and so can’t recruit and train people close by who can meet our demanding response target times. “It’s also demoralising to our existing members to not have a permanent home with the proper facilities that are afforded to other brigades that have the diversity and volume of calls that we do – around 500 calls every year and still climbing.�
Land at the corner of the Leakes and Davis roads intersection had been identified as a potential site for the new Truganina station after the vicinity was earmarked by the Victorian Planning Authority for an emergency services hub “A few years ago, once the announcement was made, the morale was so high because we were going to get our bricks-and-mortar station, but we’re still sitting in a shed,� Captain Hatton said. “In our case there is identified land, with approved zoning by council for an Emergency Services Hub. The problem is the convoluted process and time required to get the land
acquisition in place.� Western Metropolitan MP Catherine Cumming last week called on the police and emergency services minister to explain when a permanent site would finally open for the Class 5 Truganina CFA station. “Truganina CFA is a 100 per cent volunteer fire brigade that has supported our community proudly for nearly 80 years – as well as those further afield during times like the current bushfire season,� Dr Cummings said. “They have been in a temporary home since 2004. They deserve to know when the permanent home they were promised will be delivered.�
Book in a donation Spread the word: Hoppers Crossing woman Heather Brett is seeking donations ahead of a massive book sale to be held next month. Mrs Brett said she started hosting book sales to help the Werribee Mercy Hospital after meeting the hospital foundation’s community engagement and fundraising manager, Lisa Field. A sale she held last year raised about $2000 for the hospital. Now she’s busy preparing for the March sale and has put the call out for any donations of books from Wyndham residents. “We usually get lots of fiction and non-fiction, but we haven’t got many kids books yet, so we would welcome donations of those,� Mrs Brett said. She said anyone wanting to donate books could drop them off to her, or she could arrange to collect them.
“What I enjoy is just meeting everybody, it’s really good,� she said. On the weekend of the book sale, local Lions Club members will assist with the event. Any books not sold will be donated to the Lifeline opportunity shop in Warrnambool. Truganina sale to top $1 million A commercial building in Truganina, which is leased to an Indian restaurant, is expected to sell for more than $1 million. Burgess Rawson will host a portfolio auction at Crown Casino on Wednesday, February 26, where the restaurant building at Lot 2, 451 Leakes Road will be up for sale. The building, located at the intersection of Forsyth and Leakes roads, is leased to Kasba Indian Restaurant on a seven-year lease until 2026. The 144-square metre premises, which was built in 2018, includes a large alfresco dining area. The restaurant is part of a retail hub including a service station and medical and childcare centres. Man jailed for police ramming By Alesha Capone A man who intentionally rammed a stolen truck into a police car in Wyndham Vale has been sentenced to more than seven years in prison. Jason Borg, 30, faced the County Court earlier this month, where he pleaded guilty to offences including damaging an emergency service vehicle; exposing an emergency worker to risk by driving; handling stolen goods; and
possession of a drug of dependence. The court heard that on July 14, 2018, Borg – who was on bail at the time for breaching a family violence notice – was driving a stolen Ford Trader truck, pulling a tandem trailer. Two constables on patrol saw the truck, followed it to Black Forest Road and pulled Borg over. Judge John Smallwood said before the officers could exit their vehicle, Borg “deliberately reversed” the truck and trailer into the police car.
“You were driving a large truck with a large trailer and it is clear … the two police officers were not just put at risk for their safety, they were clearly, in my view, put at risk of death,” Judge Smallwood said. After driving away from the scene, Borg later drove the truck at two unmarked police vehicles, which had to take “evasive action” to avoid being hit, the court heard. Borg later attempted to drive the truck across a pedestrian bridge at Lollypop Creek Reserve,
but ran from the scene on foot after the vehicle became stuck. He was arrested a short time later, after being seen on the roof of a nearby house by the police air wing. Judge Smallwood sentenced Borg to a total of seven years and three months in prison, including the 481 days he has already spent in custody. Borg will be eligible for parole after four years.
Cub joins the Wolf pack The final stage of Cooper’s Cub Scout journey was an uphill battle. The 11-year-old planned, organised and led a hike for six of his peers around the Werribee Mansion grounds as part of the criteria to earn his Grey Wolf badge – the highest Cub accolade. Cooper is the first Cub at the 2nd Werribee Scout group to earn the award in the past five years. Scout leader Aaron Donnelly said Cooper had to use all the skills and knowledge he had learned at Cubs in preparation for the Grey Wolf. “Earning the Grey Wolf award is … no easy feat,” Mr Donnelly said. “Cooper had to plan and organise everything [for the hike] from supplies and first aid to making sure everyone knew what they needed to do, and he had to run an activity during the hike.” Cooper also had to successfully complete achievement badges in three practical skills
such as bushcraft, swimming, science, local history, cooking and canoeing. The badges had to be completed individually throughout the year, not as part of Cooper’s pack activity. “It’s really good to be able to watch [the Cubs] achieve and progress through the levels,” Mr Donnelly said. “It makes us as leaders, including my fellow leaders Judy Bawyer and Kara Francis, very proud.” Cooper moved up into Scouts last Saturday. Pitcher Jack, 15, has been playing for nearly six years and is happy to progress to a national team. “I play for fun and try to improve so I could make better teams in the future,” he said. This year will be the second season in the green and gold for Jye who has been playing since he was nine. “My love for softball has come from my mum who has also played since she was nine and that’s how I joined the sport,” Jye said. “I am honoured to play for Australia in the up and coming Friendship series in July it’s a great stepping stone to further my softball … I’m looking forward to learning new things about my game.” Esther Lauaki
Three Wyndham teens are taking a run at the big time after they were named in the Australian under-16s softball squad. Hoppers Crossing’s Jye Robinson and brothers Jack and Troy Hotere-Moana head to New Zealand in April with the national side. Jack and Jye will then compete in the International Friendship Series in Queensland in July. The teens play for Deer Park Softball club in the Western Force zone, which comprises teams from Werribee, Sunshine and Geelong. Troy said he started playing softball to keep him busy during the rugby off-season. The 14-year-old said he felt “honoured” to be named in the Aussie Diamonds squad. “I made it for under-14s last year but I didn’t actually go so

‘High priority’ court still waiting By Tate Papworth and Esther Lauaki As Werribee Magistrates Court struggles to keep up with demand, an expansion could be on the cards for neighbouring Sunshine court. Extra space opened up this month within the Sunshine court after a tenant vacated the building.
A Court Services Victoria spokeswoman said it was reviewing the functional requirements of the Sunshine court as part of a broader statewide strategic asset planning review. Meanwhile, Werribee Magistates Court, which only has two courtrooms – including one for the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal – has been earmarked as a “high priority region requiring a new purpose-built
Wonders of reed weaving Reeds cut from the mouth of Werribee River are being woven into baskets and fishing traps as part of an innovative program at the Wyndham Community and Education Centre. Elders from Burma, who volunteer at the Werribee centre, are weaving the reeds into stylish and useful objects. The centre’s settlement services co-ordinator Richard Dove, said that the spiny rush (juncus acutus) reeds were cut from near the river’s mouth by Wyndham council. “The volunteers, who are traditional weavers from Burma, are used to utiliising the resources around them to create baskets,� Mr Dove said. “By working with Wyndham City Council, who would normally cut the spiny rushes and let them compost into the ground, this gives us the opportunity to use a local resource and create baskets and fishing traps from it.� The reeds come from Grahams Westland Reserve, which is more than 20 hectares in size and comprises mainly salt marsh
vegetation, some of the last remaining of its type in Wyndham. It is a bird habitat, and together with the adjacent Melbourne Water Treatment Plant, forms a Ramsar-accredited wetland of international importance. Spiny rush, which is native to Europe, Africa and North America, is a declared noxious weed in Victoria, and primarily invades saline areas. The word “juncus� derives from the Latin word “junction�, meaning joining, and refers to the use of rushes in weaving baskets across the globe. Alesha Capone

court� since 2016. State funding has been allocated for planning and land acquisition for a new law court to be constructed as part of the Wyndham Justice Precinct development. Wyndham Cr Kim McAliney, who holds the safer communities portfolio, has been outspoken about her concerns of the safety risks the often “overcrowded� Werribee court posed for victims of family violence.
“The building cannot accommodate the sheer number of people requiring legal intervention, without compromising safety,� Cr McAliney told Star Weekly in January. The existing Werribee court was recently upgraded with safety and security works, including the replacement of the registry counter to improve privacy. Two new offices were also constructed on the upper floor for support workers.

Bike theft warning Three bicycles have been stolen from racks outside the Pacific Werribee shopping centre in Wyndham. Karen Ryan said her 15-year-old son’s bicycle, a black Trek Marlin 5 mountain bike, was stolen from outside the centre on January 29 between 2-3pm. She said the bike, valued about $600, had been fastened with a bike lock when it was stolen. The lock was also taken. Ms Ryan said she is aware of two other bikes also stolen from outside the centre. Her son’s friend had his BMX, valued about $800, stolen on Saturday, February 15. It too was fastened with a bike lock at the time. The lock was broken and discarded on the ground. “These kids have been saving up their birthday money to get their bikes,” she said. “They’re absolutely gutted, both of them. “People need to be aware this sort of thing is happening.” Ms Ryan said she had reported the theft to police, and posted about it on Facebook, in the hope of tracking down the bike. She said a man contacted her to say he had seen a male attempting to sell the same model bike as her sons at Cash Converters in Yarraville. Ms Ryan said staff at the store said they had not purchased the bike, but that all stolen bikes could be listed on www. bikevault.com.au
The principal of a school being built in Werribee says she aims to build an education community which values courage, service, kindness and respect. Shelley Ryan was last week announced as the principal of St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, which is set to open next year in Werribee’s Harpley estate. Stage one of the school, valued at $5.7 million, will cater for 200 pupils. Ms Ryan, who has almost 25 years experience in rural and regional Catholic schools, will soon finish her role as acting principal of two country schools near Ballarat, to oversee the construction of St Joseph’s. “Together with staff and families, we will build a Catholic school culture where everyone feels included, valued and accepted,” she said. “I see this as an opportunity for St Joseph’s to be a school that pursues the highest levels of learning for all students, promotes problem-solving, creativity and critical thinking so that our students are prepared to tackle the challenges of the future.” When she is not working, Ms Ryan said she enjoyed spending time with her husband Patrick and their four teenage children at their farm, and taking care of their alpacas and sheep. She also supports the Geelong Football Club. The school, which will cater for about 500 pupils when complete, will be built in three stages. Lendlease head of development, Tom Trevaskis, said stage one of St Joseph’s would include eight learning spaces, specialist learning areas and administration facilities.

Enjoy fruits of history Peaches, plums and other edible plants will have their day in the sun at Werribee Park Heritage Orchard next month. The orchard will host the nation’s largest grafting event, the Summer Heritage Fruit Tree Festival, with tours of the orchard, tree sales, grafting demonstrations, market and food stalls, crafts for sale, workshops and children’s activities. Toxic shock for residents By Tate Papworth More than 80 properties built on and around the closed Sunshine landfills are sitting on buried waste and are being exposed to methane gas. A comprehensive EPA and Brimbank council investigation has revealed 82 properties are affected, including 75 privately owned. Of those, 69 are residential and six are businesses. The site in question encompasses Energy Park and is in the heart of the state government’s designated priority precinct. It covers a large area, including existing homes located on Denton Avenue, Karen Place and Toora Court.
According to confidential documents seen by Star Weekly, a “high risk” to the health of “off-site workers and the public in the commercial or recreational facilities, including the Bocce Club” [near Carrington Drive Reserve], has also been identified. A review of the health risks, including an assessment of explosion and asphyxiation from bulk landfill gas accumulation, is being undertaken. Up to seven government-owned properties are also impacted, including four community groups occupying sites on council land, open spaces and the M80 Ring Road.
The council began informing affected residents last week. The Sunshine landfills were used through the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s to dispose of household waste, liquids and industrial waste. It is believed the landfill sites accepted a range of waste products including liquid waste (such as acids, caustic, alkalis, engine oil, paint residue, solvents) and “spent radioactive” waste. Brimbank council has insisted the risk to human and animal health is low and is expected to keep reducing over time. Monitoring of the affected sites is ongoing. However, the council could be liable for
clean-up costs, remediation of the sites and even the demolition of some homes. The council could also be liable for a claim of negligence, for failing to amend the Brimbank Planning Scheme since 1999 to disclose the location of the Sunshine landfills to innocent purchasers. The council’s chief executive Helen Morrissey said: “Full disclosure places our community first, allowing everyone to make properly informed decisions about the future.” Star Weekly has been told a valuation of the privately owned properties impacted by the buried waste is up to $60 million.
Patients at play A new playground will be built near the outpatient clinic of Werribee Mercy Hospital, thanks to a generous donation from Wyndham Rotary. Rotary members presented a cheque for $7000 to the Mercy Health Foundation last week, to help fund construction of the playground. Werribee Mercy’s outpatient clinic nurse unit manager Elizabeth Wilson, said the playground would create a more child-friendly atmosphere and improve patients’ experiences at the hospital. “I’ve observed children who are crying and screaming, and parents who are struggling in the waiting room,” Ms Wilson said. “We’re all about having the patient at the centre of our care, and by putting in a playground, that will help to make hospital visits more enjoyable for families, as opposed to stressful.
“We’re really grateful to Wyndham Rotary for its generous contribution and look forward to seeing the children laughing and smiling at our hospital once construction is complete.” Wyndham Rotary said its donation was a way of giving back to the community. “We appreciate the opportunity to help out in our community and support Wyndham to become stronger,” Rotary’s public image chair Julie Mason said. Wyndham Rotary is a regular supporter of the Mercy Health Foundation and since 2017 has supported the hospital through its annual Wyndham Rotary Fun Run/Walk. Waste hotspot on council radar By Alesha Capone Residents who live near a rubbish dumping hotspot in Tarneit are being asked to report illegal dumping on the street. Wyndham council says it has visited Butterfly Boulevard 18 times since January 2019 in relation to dumped rubbish. In January last year, a resident of the street contacted Star Weekly to raise the “appalling� waste dumping taking place. In recent weeks residents have raised the issue again. They say discarded mattresses, furniture, clothing, tree branches and other household goods are strewn across vacant land.
Wyndham council’s city operations director, Stephen Thorpe said the council was aware of rubbish dumping in Butterfly Boulevard. “Council ‌ has been to the site 18 times since January 2019,â€? Mr Thorpe said. “Council collected rubbish that was on public land and engaged with landowners to remind them of their responsibility to dispose of rubbish on their vacant land. “Rubbish dumped on private land is the responsibility of the landowner, and they are required to remove rubbish from their property or face council clean-up orders and infringements. “We have asked several landowners of the
vacant blocks on Butterfly Boulevard to remove the rubbish. “Some have complied and the remaining will be cleared by the end of March. “We are asking the neighbours in the area to be vigilant in reporting illegal dumping and any evidence that will assist council to prosecute offenders.� Mr Thorpe said the council recommended that owners of vacant land erect a fence around their blocks, to help prevent illegal dumping. He also said that every Wyndham household was entitled to three hard and green waste collections a year, which can be booked by calling 9742 0777.

Beauty of nature in art Tarneit illustrator Jessica Jane says she enjoys showcasing the beauty of Australian flora and fauna in her art. Jane will be among the exhibitors at the upcoming Williams Landing Makers’ Market, which will feature handmade art, fashion, design and food-based products. “I usually have to travel long distances for artist markets, so it’s a nice change to be bringing this trend to the western suburbs,� Jane said. “Creating work that you love and sharing it with others is an amazing feeling. My favourite moment is being face-to-face with my audience at markets and seeing how excited people get when they see my work.� Jane said she aimed to create awareness and appreciation of Australia’s “unique and wonderful endangered wildlife� through art.

New Parkinsons support group By Goya Dmytryshchak A new group in Melbourne’s west for people with lived experience of Parkinson’s was launched in Altona North earlier this month. ParKanDo co-leader Pam West said the group stemmed from a realisation that people’s needs weren’t being met. The Brooklyn resident said this month’s launch aimed to establish future activities based on what members wanted. “For about a decade, I’ve been living with Parkinson’s,” she said. “Eighteen months ago, I spent my life in a chair doing not a great deal and gradually bit by bit, through NDIS funding, I’ve been able to utilise some of the skills I used to.” South Kingsville’s Di Pollock, whose husband has Parkinson’s, said she hoped for more education, activities and socialisation “especially for end-stage people”. “My husband was diagnosed about seven years ago but he’s now in permanent residential care because I could no longer look after him,” she said. Co-leader, Point Cook’s Peter Wall, is a carer to his wife Carmel, who was diagnosed nearly 13 years ago. “Parkinson’s is a very isolating disease,” Mr Wall said. “There’s probably a lot of people in the community – we don’t know how many – who have Parkinson’s and are just sitting at home not knowing what to do about it, so we’re just trying to reach out to them.” The launch featured guest speakers and a Q&A session with an expert panel, and helped develop future activities based on attendees’ needs. Twice the birthday joy Truganina’s Gills siblings have a lot more in common than just their surname. Dahlia, who is three and baby brother Jorden share the same birthday on January 20. Mum Deepa Mathew said she never planned for it to be that way. Ms Mathew said the two were going to have birthdays within a day of each other she went into labour at Werribee Mercy with Jorden a day earlier than her due date. “Everything was booked for a cesarean section on January 21 but because he was a big baby – 4.3 kilograms – and in the breech position, he was delivered on January 20 instead,” she said. “The doctor told me, you don’t get to choose when the baby wants to come. “We cut a cake that same day as a tradition.” Ms Mathew said Jorden’s big sisters, six-year-old Anne Rose and Dahlia are thrilled with the new addition to their family. “Once they reach teenagers I don’t know if they’ll be happy to share a birthday, but they are happy now.” Esther Lauaki Dahlia with Jorden and, at back, Anne Rose. MY WYNDHAM Tharindu Jayadeva is doing his bit to make Wyndham a safe, inclusive and harmonious place for young people to live. The 26 year-old talks to Esther Lauaki about his work.
What are you passionate about? I’m passionate about building awareness and capacity in our community around youth mental health. That means building a community that focuses on young people and aims to work through the challenges they face. What is your role at Headspace Werribee? I’m a community awareness officer. I manage the health promotion in Werribee about youth mental health, whether it be in schools, speaking to community groups or organisations. My role is about improving how we engage with youth, getting them to be more active, teaching them to advocate for their rights and responsibilities. It’s also about strengthening their cultural identity. Will you be playing a part in this year’s Harmony Day? Headspace Werribee will be working closely with Wyndham council and organisers to see how we can deliver events and social media campaigns around Harmony Day. We will be focusing on how we can share the stories of our young people in a way that showcases
Why do you believe Harmony day is so important? Harmony Day [on March 21] coincides with the International Day for the Elimination of racial discrimination so we will be working to promote respectfulness. The day highlights the value of storytelling because everyone has a rich and valid story to tell. These stories are a great way that community can connect with each other. What other hats do you wear in the Wyndham community? I helped with the Park Lounge – a free event as part of the 2020 Midsumma Festival which was open to everyone to attend to celebrate inclusivity and visibility of the LGBTIQ+ community. Also, we ran Headspace Day to help raise awareness about our services. I visit schools to help students understand what mental health is. What do you love about Wyndham?

Several Werribee charities and schools received a pleasant surprise last Friday when an anonymous donor spread $1150 to help with their work. The donor, who wishes to be known only as “An Old Macedonian Farmer” wanted to, in a practical manner, express his thanks to Werribee for providing him with good life over the past 50-odd years.
Werribee will be the site for an international centre into food science and technology research if the recommendations in a new report on agricultural research are accepted by the state government. The recommendations, which include the Food Research Institute and the Animal Research Institute’s meat science research facility in the international centre, have effectively stopped plans to close down the $40 million ARI.
Werribee South residents have condemned Parks Victoria as dredging machines continue to pump a foul black liquid onto the shore and into the shallow water at Werribee South Beach. The dredging – approved by Parks Victoria and the EPA – was meant to have been completed before Christmas.
Brian Guy has been given the gift of life thanks to an organ donor. Having undergone a double lung and heart transplant, the Hoppers Crossing resident is enjoying his new lease on life with wife Cathy and children Zachary and Natalie.

SPORT Giants face a tough task to beat battling Bonbeach

Werribee Giants endured some hairy moments en route to a 5-3 victory over a Bonbeach team with only two wins from 25 starts in the Baseball Victoria summer league division 2. The Giants reaped the ultimate reward for their toil at Bicentennial Park on Sunday, finishing the day on top of the ladder, but it was far from a comfortable experience for the visiting side. Giants coach John Curnow complimented Bonbeach for continuing to fight in a season that was destined to end with a wooden spoon weeks ago. It was only the first game of a three-game series between Werribee and Bonbeach in the regular season-ending series, so the Giants will need to remain focused if they want to avoid a slip up and keep hold of top spot. “It was a tight one,” Curnow said. “They’ve been doing pretty well against the top sides. “They gave [second-placed] Williamstown
a run for their money over three games and they’ve developed well this year. A few of the young kids on their side are really going well.” The story of the day for Werribee were the performances of starting pitcher Josh Lee and closer Wes De Jong. Lee produced a marathon 8.1 innings on the mound, conceding just two runs. It will be Lee’s last start for the regular season and he is likely to be shut down until finals – though might pitch an inning or two of relief if need be. The tough outing was exactly what Lee needed to prepare for a tough finals series. “He worked hard on the mound for us,” Curnow said. “He threw a lot of pitches early, but he said ‘I’m good to keep going’. “He got better as the game went on and was able to get us deep into the eighth and hold them to a couple of runs.” While Lee pitched a quality game, he left his closer De Jong with some work to do in the
eighth. De Jong entered with Bonbeach having bases loaded and gave up a run before picking off the final five outs. It was a typically confident effort by De Jong, who thrives in pressure situations. “He wanted the ball,” Curnow said. “It wasn’t someone coming in nervous. “He had a job to do and got in there and did what he did.” Jon Lowe was the pick of the Werribee batters with three hits, while Justin Gil had two. Andrew Christou owned the big moment in the game, delivering a crucial bunt to move two runners over, which turned into two runs later in the inning. Werribee and Bonbeach will play game two at Bicentennial Park on Thursday night, followed by game three at Werribee’s President’s Park on Saturday. Lance Jenkinson
Cats need to pull rabbit out of hat By Lance Jenkinson It will take a Steven Bradbury-like effort for Hoppers Crossing to reach the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association finals now. The Cats need a whole host of equations to fall their way in the final round to snatch a spot in the top six. While it is a long shot, Cats captain Justin Goegan believes a finals berth is not out of the realms of possibility. “If results go our way, we’re playing finals,” he said. “We play Bayswater, who are above us at the moment, at their ground, so if we beat them we’re a chance. “We just look to win a game of cricket and see what happens.” Should Hoppers Crossing beat Bayswater, it will need one of Noble Park or Taylors Lakes to lose their final game. But the Cats can only control what they do on the field at Bayswater, everything else is within the lap of the cricketing gods. “We’ve got one game of cricket left and if we don’t do well in it, that’s it,” Goegan said. Of more concern for Hoppers Crossing is their ordinary recent form. The Cats have been on the receiving end of two hammerings in the past two rounds. In particular, their batting has left a lot to be desired. They were bowled out for a meagre 121 in a 94-run loss to Endeavour Hills at Hogans Road Reserve on Saturday.
That came a week after making just 91 in a 125-loss mauling from Noble Park. “We’ve let ourselves down with the bat, definitely,” Goegan said. “We’ve got to move on. “We’ve all got to get down to training, pull our finger out and know next week’s a new week. “Today’s done, today’s gone, we’re not going to dwell on it too much.” Hoppers Crossing began the match well with the ball, having Endeavour Hills in trouble on 2-2. That is where the joy ended for the Cats, who were powerless to stop a 186-run stand between Mohsin Rasheed (77) and Brian Kulasena (106no). What hurt even more for the Cats was Kulasena getting dropped on about 20. “If you don’t take those chances, it tends to bite you,” Goegan said. “They took a couple of nice caught and bowleds, where our batsmen have drilled them half an inch off the ground and they’ve taken a one-handed diving catch. “If we take ours, he’s out for 20 and we’ve got a new bloke out there, but he’s gone on to make a hundred and been part of a 186-run partnership. “The are turning points in the game.” Brett Smith was the standout with the ball for Hoppers Crossing with 3-31. Smith has been a mark of consistency this summer with 23 wickets at 12.6. The defeat leaves the Cats in eighth place with one game remaining.

The Tigers have slipped to fourth on the ladder behind western rivals Williamstown, Altona and Yarraville as a result of the penultimate round shuffle at the top. A disappointing six-wicket loss to Balwyn at Chirnside Park on Saturday has seen the Tigers pay a heft y price with their home final berth now in a rival team’s hands. Winning the toss and batting, Werribee could not conjure up enough runs on a difficult track for batting. The Tigers went at a tick of three runs an over for their 6-137 off their 45 overs. Shaun Dean was impressive at the top of the order with 34, but could not go on with it.
Matthew Gudde (48) and James Freeman (24) worked hard in the middle order. Try as they might, it was simply not enough for the Tigers bowlers to defend. Werribee fought hard with the ball until the bitter end. It took Balwyn 43.1 overs to finally pass the target with 11 balls to spare. Bradley Apps (2-23), Jonathan Burton (1-22) and Jack Budd (1-24) gave it their all, but it was just too small to defend. Hope dwindling for United By Lance Jenkinson Western United is drifting further away from the light at the end of the tunnel. United’s post-Christmas A-League form line makes for dire reading with just one win, one draw and five losses. The goals have dried up for United in the past three rounds, including Friday night’s 2-0 loss to Wellington Phoenix in Wellington. It has seen United’s top six chances significantly dwindle as they are now five points back from sixth place with eight games to play. Western United coach Mark Rudan is trying to stay upbeat and is holding on to anything remotely positive in his side’s performances during a tough run. After a hellish first half against the Phoenix, United at least fought it out in the second half and had moments where they looked like they could steal a point. “The attitude and the effort in the second half was fantastic and that’s what we want to see,� Rudan said. “We couldn’t finish off all those entries into the final third, not through a lack of trying. “Certainly the first half was a charge of the light brigade. “They were just at us non stop.� All that stood in the way of Western United and a heavy defeat was stellar goalkeeping from Filip Kurto. Could Kurto take out the A-League goalkeeper of the year award for a second season running? After making a succession of tough saves from well drilled shots, Kurto came undone by Phoenix winger Liberato Cacace in the 29th minute. It is debatable whether Cacace’s shot was in

fact a shot as it appeared as though it could have been a cross that slewed off the side of his boot and inside the far post. Only Cacace will know his intentions and it mattered little as it put the Phoenix up and deservedly so after their dominant first half. The second half was encouraging from Western United as it had the home side pinned to their back third for much of the half. Tomoki Imai and Connor Pain were driving forces for United, while Max Burgess was lively after replacing the injured Panagiotis Kone,
who hurt a forearm. While United had many incursions into the front third, there was a serious disconnect with striker Besart Berisha, who barely had a sniff of goal and grew more and more frustrated with the sub-standard service. Despite the lean times in the new year, Rudan is not one to wave the white flag and expects his team to continue pushing hard for finals. United will host Central Coast Mariners – the only side United have beaten in 2020 – at GMHBA Stadium on Sunday at 4pm.

The Centurions player-coach Shaun Jennings concedes his side will have its work cut out for it as it tries to be the first team to beat the top-of-the-table Bulls this summer. “We’re definitely behind the eight ball,” he said. “We’ll certainly be pushing hard though. “We still want to finish as high up the ladder as we can and finish off the year with a win.” Werribee Centrals found the going tough with the bat, posting 137 off 56.3 overs. Jennings was the mainstay of the Centurions innings, carving out a steady 58. “I had to be quite patient,” Jennings said. “Because the outfield was quite slow, it was difficult to really push the run rate up. “With all the wickets falling at the other end, I just had to make sure that I stayed in for quite a while.” Daniel Williams provided some assistance for Werribee Centrals. Williams made 36 before going out trying to up the run rate. “He was fairly attacking,” Jennings said. “Then towards the end, when we were down to our last couple of wickets, he tried to push the runs a bit more.” Jacob Russell dug in for a while to make 17, but there was little else to get excited about for Werribee Centrals from a batting standpoint. Jennings was disappointed with some of the Centurions shot selection on the day. “A few of the top order wickets were from good deliveries, but then through the middle order there were some bad shots,” he said.
