Fall in love with park

MIKE AND JESS

Love will be in the air at Wyndham Park on Valentine’s Day. On Friday, February 14, residents will be able to take their first look at the upgraded Werribee park, which has been redeveloped by Wyndham council under a $13 million project, including a $3.2 million grant from the state government’s Growing Suburbs Fund. The park is now home to an adventure play space, an events lawn, seating, toilets, barbecues, shelters, new pathways, improvements to cycling access, viewing areas and improved lighting. On Valentine’s Day, the council will screen two movies at the park, Shrek at 6pm and The Notebook at 8pm. There will be free children’s activities from 5pm, including making your own flower crown. Picnics are welcome and there will also be dessert treats available for purchase. Entry is via Wedge Street Piazza and visitors are encouraged to bring along their own picnic blanket or camp chair. The event will be alcohol-free, see wyndham.vic.gov.au/valentinesday for details.

Point Cook animal rescuers are calling for public assistance after more than 50 cats were removed from the house of a hoarder. The cats were discovered and removed from the western suburbs property in recent weeks as part of a major operation involving Purrs of Point Cook rescuers Rebecca Roberts and Bec Greeves, along with five other animal welfare groups and foster carers. Ms Roberts put out a call last week seeking assistance for the cats, all of which needed urgent medical care. She said it was “one of the worst cases” she had seen. Three of the cats are currently under the care of Purrs of Point Cook. “Cat hoarding is a serious mental health issue and is an extremely confronting and upsetting situation for everyone involved,” Ms Roberts said. “Our focus is on helping the three cats from this home that are in our care. “These three beautiful cats have all needed medical attention, with [one] so sick that she needed urgent after hours care at U-VET on [January 23],” Ms Roberts said. “All three kitties are dehydrated, malnourished, fluey and are on medication.” Ms Roberts said Purrs of Point Cook, which is run by volunteers, was in desperate need of funding to carry on its important work. An online fundraising campaign has been set up to cover vet bills for the three cats. “We are currently over $5000 in debt to our vet clinics,” Ms Roberts said. “We knew these kitties would cost a lot to bring back to good health and we clearly can’t afford it at the moment, but we couldn’t turn our backs and we knew that our supporters wouldn’t either. “We do not have a shelter, our wonderful network of foster carers provide warm, loving, caring homes for our rescued cats and kittens until forever homes can be found.” She said her concern was that the cats would not be adopted for some time. “With kids heading back to school we find this time of year adoptions completely drop off,” Ms Roberts said. “Families adopt during school holidays because it’s the ideal time for a new [cat] to settle in, especially if parents have time off work too. “Unfortunately for the cats and kittens in care currently, this means they will likely wait months longer to find homes.” Details: purrsofpointcook.com.au/contact-us

Call for action on East Werribee By Alesha Capone About 600 people have signed a petition calling on the state government to establish a new city at East Werribee “as a matter of urgency”. The Point Cook Action Group (PCAG) has launched the petition, which will be submitted to the Legislative Assembly of Victoria, requesting the government to “develop a plan to increase local employment through the establishment of the East Werribee precinct”.

“Benefits from the establishment of a new East Werribee city include the employment of up to 50,000 people, educational institutes, IT tech park, shopping complexes, research facilities and tourism opportunities,” the petition states. PCAG president Bob Fairclough said members of the group were collecting signatures for the petition. “The residents of Point Cook have said that local employment is a really important issue for them and they would like the government to make a big effort to get this precinct

established, so people can work locally,” Mr Fairclough said. “I think it’s really important for Werribee residents as well.” In 2015, the government selected the Chinese-backed Australian Education City to transform a parcel of land located on the Princes Highway into a $31 billion “super city” consisting of an education and housing precinct. However, in July last year the government announced it had “decided to conclude the expression of interest process for the sale of

East Werribee Employment Precinct land”. “With the continued growth in Melbourne’s west, the government will undertake further work to better understand the investment required to support the region’s transport infrastructure needs, particularly in light of its commitment to the Suburban Rail Loop and Melbourne Airport Rail Link,” the government said in a statement at the time. To sign the petition, visit: www.facebook. com/PointCookActionGroup/ The state government was contacted for comment regarding the petition.

Driver warning over school crossings

Volunteer has community at heart The promise of pizza attracted Hoppers Crossing’s Daniel Barry to his first Lions Club meeting – but he became hooked on community service soon afterwards. He now advocates for young people by volunteering on the Wyndham Youth Council Committee, the Hobsons Bay Leo Club, and is a first responder for St John Ambulance Victoria. The 25 year-old is one of four Wyndham high-flyers vying for a state Young Achievers Award. Daniel is up for the Saward Dawson Community Service and Social Impact Award, which recognises young people serving their communities through social enterprise and

volunteering. “I’ve always wanted to do something outside my comfort zone and I wanted to be more of a well-rounded person by volunteering for my community,” he said. “My volunteer work with the Leo Club of Hobsons Bay requires me to attend fortnightly meetings to organise community fundraisers and projects. “As a first responder with St John Ambulance Victoria my job is to treat ill or injured members of the public at public events, spanning from AFL games to large community gatherings. “I was chosen to serve on the Wyndham Youth Council Committee … to discuss youth

policy and create the 2020 Wyndham Youth Plan.” Outside of his volunteering roles, Daniel conducts malaria research for Melbourne University. “It would mean a lot for me to be recognised as a young achiever so that I can show other young people what they can do for their community and what volunteer roles are out there for them,” he said. The Young Achiever Awards acknowledge, encourage and promote the achievements of young people in Victoria up to 29 years of age.

Slow down and obey the road rules. That was the message to motorists as children across Wyndham returned to school last week. Wyndham council is calling on parents and carers to take extra caution when dropping their children off at school to ensure the safety of the public and avoid fines. Safer communities portfolio holder Kim McAliney said the council observed motorists engaging in unsafe – and sometimes dangerous – behaviour around schools in the past year. “We understand how busy parents can be trying to get the kids to school in the morning and picking them up in the afternoon, but it is no excuse for unsafe driving and parking,” Cr McAliney said. “Council will be issuing fines to people double parking near schools or parking outside of designated car spaces.” Cr McAliney said the council was working closely with Victoria Police to ensure drivers slow down to 40km/h outside school zones between 8am and 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4pm. “The safety of our school crossing supervisors is paramount, and anyone caught driving past their stop signs will be fined,” she said. She also urged parents to reduce school run stress by encouraging students to ride, walk, or scoot to school. “This not only increases the family’s physical activity but reduces traffic congestion,” Cr McAliney said. “It is important to ensure children cross at the supervised school crossing.” Esther Lauaki

YMCA’s new care centres

Heath Venn is renting out his pool this summer. (Pictures: Damjan Janevski) 203608

Pool app makes a splash By Alesha Capone An app and website called Swimply is making a splash in Melbourne. The concept behind the project – described as “the Airbnb for swimming pools” – is to connect owners of private pools with people looking for a place to swim. Pool owners charge an hourly rate for the use of their pool and people wanting to take a dip can search Swimply for pools to rent in their

area. Werribee man Heath Venn has signed up to the app to rent his backyard pool out to people seeking relief from the summer heat. “People can come in and relax, just have fun and that’s what it’s all about,” he said. Mr Venn said he and his partner Tori planned to use the funds earned from renting out the pool to upgrade their backyard – he is in the process of building a fire-pit near the pool. Mr Venn said it made sense for other people to use the pool, when he, Tori and their children

were otherwise occupied. “Why let this awesome pool go to waste?” he said. Mr Venn, who charges $40 per hour for his pool, said the only difficulty with Swimply could be if people wanted to book the pool while he and Tori were both at work or away from home. Mr Venn said that apps such as Swimply were “the way of the future”, much like Uber and Airbnb. Details: swimply.com

A new YMCA Early Learning Centre has opened in Tarneit, while another is set to open in Wyndham Vale later this year. The Tarneit centre, located in Mulholland Drive within the Riverdale Estate, opened on January 20. It has 120 places available for children. The Wyndham Vale centre, located in Paramount Bvd within the Wynbrook Estate, is set to open in March with 124 places. Both centres will offer long day care for children aged from for six weeks to five years old, and kindergarten for four-year-olds. The centres will include toys, educational resources, sunscreen for outdoor play, nappies and healthy meals and snacks prepared on-site daily. In a first for Australian childcare centres, the YMCA will be using a chemical-free and environmentally sustainable cleaning initiative, eWater Systems, at the centre. The eWater System uses an electrical charger to split water and salt to produce two separate solutions to clean surfaces, wash food and keep toys clean, without employing chemicals or single-use packaging. YMCA chief operations officer Amanda Locke said: “The rapid growth in Tarneit and Wyndham Vale has created a need for quality and affordable early learning centres to cater to local families with young children.” Both centres are now taking bookings. See www.grow.ymca.org.au/tarneit or www.grow.ymca.org.au/wyndham-vale for details.

New schools open in Wyndham By Alesha Capone Two new schools have been officially opened in Wyndham. Minister for Education James Merlino and Altona MP Jill Hennessy attended the opening of the $53 million Homestead Senior Secondary College in Point Cook last Thursday. The Homestead Road school includes a three-level building, a state-of-the-art performing arts and physical education facility and a sports field. The school will take year 11 enrolments next

year and year 12 enrolments in 2022. “This new school has been designed from the ground up to best suit the needs of every future student in Point Cook,” Ms Hennessy said. Also on Thursday, Mr Merlino and Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly opened the $20.1 million Davis Creek Primary School in Tarneit. Pupils from prep to year 6 will start at the Wootten Road school this year. Davis Creek Primary School includes two learning community buildings with specialist spaces, an administration building, a performing arts and physical education

building, multi-use courts and an oval. “This will be an incredible local school for families in Tarneit that will provide students with the first-rate education facilities they deserve,” Ms Connolly said. A new integrated children’s and community centre is also being built on the school’s site, and is scheduled to open in 2021. Homestead Senior Secondary College and Davis Creek Primary School are two of 11 new schools to open across the state this year. This year also marks the first year in the state’s history that more than one million

students will attend school in Victoria, across 1543 government schools, 498 Catholic schools and 222 independent schools. More than 81,000 preps will start school this year. The state government is planning to open 100 new schools by 2026. “Whether it’s achieving excellence, building a world-class education system or creating opportunities for every Victorian, we’re making sure that every student can make the most of school and get the best start in life,” Mr Merlino said.

Leaders bring new focus progress with the roll-out of the school’s master plan for expansion. Steve Tkaczuk, who replaces Nathan Shrowder as head of middle school this year, said his aim was to raise the students’ global awareness. “It’s about getting the children to realise that beyond their own community, there is a world out there and they have a responsibility to be the inquirers and be the people who are going to lead us into the future,” Mr Tkaczuk said. Good News Lutheran College heads into the school year with new leadership and a global focus. Principal Fiona McAuliffe transferred from South Australia to take over the role from departing principal Simon Hughes. Ms McAuliffe said she would put emphasis on inclusiveness in the school. “The school has been growing at a phenomenal rate over the past 22 years and is still growing,” she said. “We have so many different cultures involved in this school and a number of different religions … so we have an opportunity to make an impact on how students accept each other and work together. “My vision would be that the International Baccalaureate programs ensure that we’re being inclusive of everybody and bring the best out of all the different backgrounds we have.” Ms McAuliffe said she also wanted to

Finally, park plan unveiled After almost a decade of bureaucratic buck-shoving and indecision, a park will finally be built at the former Glen Devon Primary School site, with $870,000 in works to be completed upon the vacant land. Wyndham council last week announced that works are underway to turn the two-hectare site, on Market Road, into a park. Construction of the park is expected to finish in April.

The area will once again be a key community gathering space - Josh Gilligan

The former school site is owned by the state government, which is funding the park’s construction though a grant from the Growing Suburbs Fund. The Glen Devon Primary School shut during 2010 and buildings on site were extensively damaged by fire in late 2011. For years, the land has remained idle and derelict due to state government inaction. Wyndham mayor Cr Josh Gilligan said the council has taken out a five-year lease on the land, which the government is retaining “for future education provision”. Cr Gilligan said the council would maintain the park, with the potential to extend the lease for a further five years. “After this time, the Minister for Education, who owns the land, will determine the future educational use of the site,” Cr Gilligan said. He said the new park would have a landscaped lawn, a circuit path, seats, a picnic table, a shelter and a nature-play area. “Restoring Glen Devon is another example of how this council is working hard to deliver

a liveable city – not just a big city. “By turning the site into a park, the area will once again be a key community gathering space, which is an asset to the neighbourhood.”

“Werribee residents who have fond memories of attending school on this site will be able to visit the new park with their own families.”

Earn money while saving energy Wyndham residents will be able to make money while helping save energy on hot days this summer, as part of a program run by CitiPower and Powercor. The two electricity distributors have launched the Energy Partner program to financially reward households which reduce electricity for up to three hours on selected days during the summer months. The program, which will run until March 31, is open to households located in Wyndham, Hobsons Bay, Melton, Boroondara, Glen Eira, Greater Geelong and Port Phillip. As part of the program, eligible customers will have a free Sensibo smart controller installed in their air conditioner. On selected peak demand days, CitiPower and Powercor will use the controller to temporarily adjust the temperatures of the air conditioners for up to three hours. Participants who leave their air conditioners at the adjusted temperature during this timeframe will receive a $20 payment. Last year, 1067 participants living on the Bellarine Peninsula took part in the program, sharing in over $50,000 of rewards. On one day alone, participants helped save 474 kilowatts – enough electricity to power more than 200 homes. Details: www.powercor.com.au/ energy-partner/

Call for noise walls on freeway By Alesha Capone A resident living near the Duncans Road interchange has called for noise barriers to be installed along a section of the Princes Freeway. The resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said “noise pollution” coming from the freeway was causing “health issues” for nearby residents. “The constant daily drone from the Princess Freeway is causing mental fatigue as we are constantly trying to block the noise out,” he said.

“At night the sound has become so loud that we have no choice but to sleep with ear plugs and even that doesn’t solve the issue. “My partner is currently on sleeping medication to help stay asleep through the constant drone all night.” The man said the stretch of Princes Freeway backing onto a residential area, which includes Christina Court and surrounding streets in Werribee, is “the only area without adequate noise protection from Lara to the Westgate Bridge”. “I am unsure how this has been able to happen

and why now with ongoing construction this issue can’t be addressed,” he said. “Just on the other side of the freeway is Point Cook, that have had large six-to-10-metre high concrete noise barriers installed the length of the suburb.” The man said during May last year, Wyndham council conducted noise-level testing in the area, when the speed limit was reduced from 100 km/h to 60 km/h. He said the council had informed residents “the noise level was only just under the decibel level to install noise barriers”. A Department of Transport spokesperson said the department

was working with Major Road Projects Victoria (MRPV) “on its plans to incorporate noise walls as part of the Duncans Road interchange upgrade”. A MRPV spokesperson said noise walls were being built as part of the Western Roads Upgrade “where they are needed” but other steps were also being taken. A state government spokesperson said: “We’re always working to limit the impacts new and upgraded roads have on communities – so we’ll install new noise walls for the Melbourne-bound exit ramp that forms part of the upgraded Duncans Road interchange.”

Valentine’s for singles A Werribee playcentre will host a Valentine’s Day event for single parents and their children. Tracey Jobe, owner of Bumble Beez Indoor Playcentre, said she decided to organise the event to help connect single parents from the western suburbs. Parents will be able to bring their youngsters along to the event to play, while the adults chat. “I am also a single parent and know that Valentine’s Day can be quite difficult,” Ms Jobe said. “I thought it would be a great opportunity for single mums and dads to meet local parents in the same situation. “It would be great if friendships grew from such an event – possibly even love, who knows.” Ms Jobe said that children of any age were welcome to attend, as the playcentre has a special area for toddlers and a playground suitable for children aged up to 12. “Coming to an event like this is very relaxed,

you can be social or you can just let your children do the socializing, there are no rules for the night,” she said. “It’s about being in a neutral and safe environment whilst hopefully broadening a social network.” Ms Jobe said the playcentre’s café would be open on the night to provide attendees with a home-cooked meal. The Single Parents Valentine’s Day Playdate will be held on Friday, 14 February 2020 from 5-9pm, entry: free for adults and $3 for children to play. Carpark is a quagmire By Alesha Capone The Ace carpark near Williams Landing train station, which often becomes waterlogged in wet weather, is being upgraded. Ace Parking last week issued a statement on the works, which said: “In light of the significant rain events we have experienced in the area, we are currently undertaking significant improvement works to both carparks to improve the surface and customer experience.” The first stage of the works was completed in the larger area of the carpark across the Christmas and New Year holiday period. “This included re-grading the carpark surface for better drainage and installing new fencing throughout to improve delineation of parking areas and driveways, as well as increase capacity,” the statement said. “The second stage of these works is scheduled to take place over the Easter Break in the overflow car park (behind the Target offices). “This will include re-grading the carpark surface for better drainage, replacement of bay markings and installation of fencing to also improve delineation of parking areas and driveways, as well as increase capacity.” Commuter Igor Dejanovic captured this image, right, of flooding at the Williams Landing car park last month. Star Weekly published the photo on social media last week, which prompted many readers to comment that the carpark was actually built upon a flood plain. “I walk past most days and will say that the water takes days to drain away after rain,” Emily wrote. “It was still like that 3-4 days after the last rainfall.” John posted: “AND they want people to use public transport … So why don’t they provide the appropriate infrastructure.”

The annual Midsumma Festival will arrive in Wyndham this month to celebrate the municipality’s LGBTIQ+ community. Wyndham’s cultural diversity portfolio holder, Cr Henry Barlow, said two free, family-friendly events would be held as part of the festival, featuring top-quality entertainment and locally-made food. The first event, Park Lounge, will be held on Saturday, February 8, from 59pm in Kelly Park, Werribee. Cr Barlow said attendees could expect a “stunning” line-up of artists, performers, cabaret divas, musicians and tasty Sri Lankan food. The acts will include theatrical group PO PO MO CO, which will present Once Upon a Drag Storytime, a highly-energised comedy which celebrates gender and diverse families. The second Midsumma event to be held in Wyndham will be the Out is Out exhibition, which will be on display at the Wyndham Art Gallery from Thursday, February 6 to March 8. The exhibition contains work by people who paved the way for LGBTIQ+ self-expression and freedom, and a new generation of activists. The Wyndham Art Gallery, which is located at 177 Watton Street, Werribee, is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 4.30pm and weekends from 11am to 4pm. Train woes for Werribee commuters By Alesha Capone Commuters on the Werribee train line were forced to deal with thousands of services which did not run as scheduled last year. Between January and December, the Werribee line recorded the third-most unreliable train service within metropolitan Melbourne, with more than 2700 services not running as scheduled. The Frankston line topped the list with 3246 services which did not run as scheduled. On the Werribee line last year, there were

1188 cancelled trains, 1050 trains which ran short, 423 which bypassed stations (defined as not stopping at Westona or City Loop stations as scheduled) and 422 which skipped a station. In comparison, during 2018, 1789 services on the Werribee line did not run as scheduled. Opposition public transport spokesman,

David Davis, said last year, many Melbourne train lines did not meet the state government’s punctuality targets. “An unacceptable proportion of our trains do not run on time and a truly appalling number of train services, more than 2000 each month, do not even run as scheduled,” Mr Davis. He said Premier Daniel Andrews and Public Transport Minister Melissa Horne needed to ensure train performance improved across Melbourne. “Where is the Minister? Where is the Premier? They are clearly not waiting for a train to get them to where they need to be,”

Mr Davis said. The Department of Transport last week released its performance results for December 2019, which said Metro Trains recorded an overall punctuality score of 90.8 per cent. In a statement, the department said many delays were caused by people illegally entering train tracks and extreme heat. The department’s head of transport services, Jeroen Weimar said: “Metro Trains was faced with many challenges in December but we’re still looking for them to improve their performance to ensure our passengers get the reliable service they deserve.”

Sports gear sought be able to donate equipment as varied as soccer balls, bocce sets and quoits. “In households, if people could have a quick look, perhaps they will have sports equipment or clothing which has past its use-by date in terms of people using it, but which aren’t past its use-by date in terms of quality – for instance, after children grow up or kids grow out of sizes,” he said. Donations can be dropped off at 11-13 Gerves Drive (off Locke Avenue), Werribee on Saturday, February 8 from 10am to 4pm. Contact Mr Cullen on 0421 442 340 to arrange a delivery on another day. Reclink Australia is calling on Wyndham residents to donate sports and recreational equipment to its bushfire appeal. Reclink founder Peter Cullen said people who wanted to donate second-hand, good-quality sports gear to the appeal would be able to drop it off at a collection point in Werribee this weekend. Mr Cullen said that in light of the bushfires that have impacted upon so many people, he decided to launch the appeal, titled Reclink Sports Share, to collect sports equipment to donate to people living in the Gippsland area. “Our hope is sporting equipment gives people some relief, but also just sheer joy in the face of so much trauma,” Mr Cullen said. He said that so far, individuals and businesses had donated bicycles, running shoes and cricket bats to the appeal. Mr Cullen said that in addition to these items, he was hoping Wyndham resident would

Selling? Get set to make a profit By Alesha Capone Wyndham has been named one of the most profitable areas of the state to re-sell residential properties. According to the latest Pain and Gain report from CoreLogic, 98.2 per cent of Wyndham homes re-sold at a profit between September and December last year, with an overall median profit of $291,450 per property. The Macedon Ranges topped the list with 100 per cent of all properties reselling for a profit (making a median profit of $380,000 per property). Moorabool placed second with 98.9 per cent of homes re-selling for a profit (with a median profit of $219,500 per property) and Melton with 98.3 per cent (a median profit of $225,000 per property). “With Melbourne housing values once again approaching a record high, we are expecting the proportion of profit making re-sales will continue to rise across the Melbourne metro region,” the CoreLogic report said. Property re-sellers across Australia earned $18.7 billion in the September quarter of last year. CoreLogic’s head of residential research, Eliza Owen, said that owner-occupied properties outperformed investment properties in all markets, except for in Tasmania. Nationally, 88.9 per cent of owner-occupied properties resold for a profit, compared to 83.4 per cent of investor-owner properties. Overall, house resellers were more likely than unit sellers to experience gains. Nine in 10 houses across Australia sold for more than their previous purchase price compared to 80.2 per cent of apartments.

Emmasyn, from Hoppers Crossing, and Melton’s Sienna have been dancing since they were three and teamed up this year for their first performances as a duo. The girls, who dance with Galactic Dance and Events, are no strangers to success claiming national titles at last year’s Gold Coast championships in the overall duo/trio categories. MY WYNDHAM Werribee Football Club captain Michael Sodomaco chats with Alesha Capone. How long have you been captain of the team?

What do you like about your role? I think it’s the changes over time. I think, initially, that I wanted to play football at the highest level that I could, but then life changes and you finish university and start working, and football becomes a bit of a release from the worries and stress of life. As you get older, you enjoy working with the younger blokes and seeing them get out of the club, what I’ve gotten out of the club. I love game day, and the adrenaline – and the friendships within the team, I make 20 new friends every year. I really enjoy the social aspect too. What have been the highlights for you, across the years? I reckon any final is always great, however last year – in our first year as a stand-alone club – we made our first final. Hopefully we have set the club up so this can become our basis as normal, not the exception. I think the first final win as a stand-alone club, the effort that went into that and the hard work people put in, is amazing. How often do you train during the season?

We usually do three training sessions a week, also gym sessions a couple of times per week, which you can do after training or in your own time. What is the biggest challenge of being a footballer – is it maintaining that work/life balance? The biggest challenge is managing that balance, for sure. When you change job or move house, when you have something else going on – particularly with footy – your time becomes quite busy. What advice do you have for youngsters wanting to follow in your footsteps? Just keep making it fun. The more fun it is, the longer you’ll play, and the longer you play, the better you will get. And find a way to enjoy training. What would you say to the Wyndham community? Come down and support us, we’re really taking pride in representing Werribee and the western region now we’re a stand-alone club. Our first game of the season will be held under lights at Avalon Airport Oval, hopefully we’ll put on a good show.

(Damjan Janevski) 203745_01

I think it’s been about five years. And this will be my 10th season at the club, I debuted in 2009.

Escape to sea Indented Head might be one of the smaller jewels in Bellarine Peninsula’s crown, but it shines very brightly for the lucky 1133 permanent residents counted in the 2016 census, as well as for the many holiday makers and weekenders who come for the seemingly endless sandy beaches and its scenic seclusion, writes Carole Levy. If you want a piece of this superb lifestyle, the Seabreeze estate has released Stage 14, with 14 various sized blocks - starting from $258,000 up for grabs. Within a stroll of the beach, where brightly coloured historical boat sheds amplify the picture-book coastal vibe, the blocks (from 5021203 square metres) are among established seaside homes, along the stretch of Seascape Drive. The hamlet, five kilometres from Portarlington and 30 minutes from Geelong, is an idyllic spot to build a weekender or to put down roots and become a full-time local. Indented Heads offers so much to suit both these types of buyers. Summers spent at the sandy beaches or on the typically calm sea is a major attraction, but there’s plenty more. Numerous sheds are another bonus. This hard-to-find gem enjoys easy access to freeways to Geelong and Melbourne.

Tucked into the corner formed by Princes Highway and Derrimut Road, this terrific modern unit makes an ideal investment or first home. Its desirable locale puts it within easy reach of the station and Watton Street’s retail and cafes, as well as entry to the Princes Freeway. The light-filled unit has warm-white wall paint, grey carpet and floor tiles, appealing floor planks, and windows with vertical blinds or mid-grey tab curtains. Everything is fresh and streamlined. The two fitted bedrooms are along the entry hall and flank a smart bathroom with a semi-recessed basin on a vanity with the same woodgrain laminate as in the kitchen. The toilet adjoins the laundry which provides access to the remote-controlled garage. The kitchen, abutting a spacious floorboarded living area, has abundant storage and an island brekkie bench for two, accompanied by a dishwasher, gas cooktop and underbench oven. A timber deck extends to the fence line which is concealed by rustic timbers that add much character, and a garden shed nestles to the side. Other notable features include ducted heating, evaporative cooling, security doors and flyscreens.

SPORT Point Cook in pole position entering run to the finals Top-of-the-ladder Point Cook was confident it had the runs on the board to beat cellar dweller Seabrook in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 3 local derby at Bruce Comben Reserve on Saturday, but will never know for sure. The second day’s play fell victim to the incessant rain that blanketed the western suburbs and not a single delivery was sent down. “We were obviously very keen to play, but we didn’t even get a ball bowled,” playing coach Aaron Whear said. “The weather Gods didn’t shine on us, so unfortunately no cricket.” The previous Saturday was a rollercoaster ride for Point Cook. The Warriors were feeling a little uneasy at one point on the first day before Harvinder Singh launched a rescue mission.

With play abandoned on Saturday, Point Cook’s Sarwan Kumar, Nav Singh, Gurbaksh Khaira and Sunny Singh decided to play cards. (Mark Wilson)

While the Warriors’ top order, led by Navdeep Purba (38) was solid, they found themselves in a spot of bother at 7-116 following a middle order collapse.

Thankfully for the Warriors, the lower order, led by Singh, provided a lifeline. “They had us in all sorts,” Whear said. “We managed to recover to get it up to 210, which I still think is a good score on their ground. “If you have a look through the stats, I think their highest score there this year is 168. “So, a competitive game? Absolutely. “Our goal at the start of the day was 200, so to get 210, we’ve done well. “We were always going to back ourselves.” Singh produced a stellar knock to have Point Cook feeling a tad better come stumps. He wreaked havoc with a run-a-ball 82, including five fours and three sixes. Batting in partnership with Whear, the pair put on a 79-run eighth wicket partnership to boost the score.

New star of the west By Lance Jenkinson A stellar year on the basketball court has landed Paul Tsapatolis the 2019 Don Deeble Rising Star award. Tsapatolis, from Point Cook, was crowned the Deeble champion at the annual awards night at the Deer Park Club last Wednesday night, taking out the top gong ahead of nine other worthy nominees. The runners up were Footscray rower Samuel Wilson and Altona hockey player Connar Otterbach, while encouragement awards went to footballer Lucas Rocci and sprinter Matthew Payne. Tsapatolis was nominated for the Deeble award in 2017 but missed out and it spurred him to work even harder to eventually take out the top youth sports honour in the western suburbs. “I got nominated two years ago and it was a great experience being the monthly winner,” Tsapatolis said. “Then going to the major awards night and didn’t get anything, I clearly wasn’t good enough, so I needed to work harder. “The last two years, I’ve worked hard and last year and so far this year it’s starting to pay off.” Tsapatolis will cherish the memories of 2019. The Deeble honour was the cherry on the top for the 17 year-old, having experienced such incredible highs last year. Taking out a title with Victoria at the under 18 national championships was a relief for Tsapatolis. “I didn’t win a nationals for three years after my first one in under 16s,“ he said. “That was definitely one of the highlights.” Tsapatolis, a Maribyrnong College student, went on to represent Australia at the Oceania championships. As the starting centre in the green and gold, Tsapatolis had an incredible tournament, playing a key role in his team’s triumph and then earning all star five honours. “Never in a million years did I think about making an all star five, let alone representing Australia again,” he said. “It’s something that not many people get to do, playing for your country and winning all star five. “You never really expect it when you’re playing junior basketball and even at the tournament I didn’t expect it. “To get that was pretty surreal.” If you think that basketball is all that is on Tsapatolis’s mind, think again. Tsapatolis was a talented junior in Australian rules football playing for Yarraville Seddon and a door could be opening up for him to move into the AFL system. A six-foot-seven ruckman with endurance, Tsapatolis is trialling for multiple AFL clubs in 34 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY Wednesday, 5 February, 2020

a bid to impress for a category B rookie spot on an AFL list. Tsapatolis is not turning his back on basketball, more so keeping his options open. Tsapatolis received $5000, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, for winning the Deeble award for 2019, while Wilson and Otterbach received $2500 each.

Rocci and Payne walked away with $1000 each, thanks to sponsors Strathmore Community Bank and Deer Park Club. The volunteers at the Sunshine and Western Region Sports Club do tremendous work throughout the year honouring the most talented young sports people in the western suburbs through monthly and annual dinners.

Whear, who played the support role with 17 off 66, had a front row seat to the Singh show. “We put on 70 odd and I really didn’t score that many, but it just shows the value of partnerships,” Whear said. “One of the things I go on about with our players is valuing your wicket and partnership, so it doesn’t really matter who is making the runs, as long as someone is there supporting.” Unfortunately for Singh and Whear, Point Cook did not get the chance to defend their score on the second day. It was not all bad for the Warriors though as they remain on top of the ladder ahead of two-day games against third-placed Williamstown Imperials and second-placed Sydenham Hillside at Saltwater Reserve in the lead up to finals. Championship within reach of Melbourne The in-form Melbourne Aces have secured a berth in the Australian Baseball League championship series. The Jon Deeble-coached Aces will face Adelaide Giants in a three-game season decider in a bid to claim their first title in franchise history. It will be the third time the Aces have featured on the ABLCS weekend with both other times ending in that bitter taste of defeat. The Aces’ first foray to the ABLCS came back in 2011-12 when it went down two games to one to Perth Heat. Three years ago, the Aces found their way back to the final weekend of the season, only to be swept by the Brisbane Bandits. The Bandits have won the past four ABL titles, but there will be a new winner this season because neither Melbourne or Adelaide have won titles in the current formation of the ABL. Of course, in the old ABL, Melbourne-based teams Waverley Reds, Melbourne Monarchs and Melbourne Reds all won titles. Melbourne Aces earned a passage through to this summer’s ABLCS with a 2-0 series sweep over Auckland Tuatara over the weekend. The Aces took game one 5-4 on home soil at the Melbourne Ballpark on Thursday night. Darin Downs started on the mound for the Aces and picked up the win. Downs had the Aces in front when he left the field after 5.2 innings. Jon Kennedy and Scott Mitchinson worked efficiently middle relief, while Cody Mincey closed out the game. Nate Samson hit the only home run for the Melbourne Aces. Knowing a win would clinch the series on Saturday night at Auckland’s North Harbour Stadium, Melbourne Aces were keen to get the job done and avoid a sudden death game three. The Aces stuck to their end of the bargain, winning 6-2 win. Melbourne Aces can go into ABLCS with confidence, having beaten the Adelaide Giants three times in a four-game series last month. The Aces will host game one of the ABLCS at Melbourne Ballpark on Friday at 7pm. Lance Jenkinson

Three stars out, three in for new-look Devils

Wyndham Devils have spent the summer exchanging stars ahead of their Big V Basketball women’s state championship title defence. The Devils will have a largely new-look starting five after three of their top performers from last season decided to move on to higher leagues. Title-winning players Alexyz Vaioletama, Alisia Jenkins and Sarah Elsworthy has all departed to higher leagues. Devils coach Reece Potter is pleased for the trio to further their basketball careers. He is also pleased that he has been able to replace them with similarly strong players. “It’s good to see those players come through our program and go up another step,” he said. “The thing I’ve been excited about is we’ve lost some players to NBL 1 level looking to step up, but we’ve been able to recruit some back and show that our club and our program is a worthy program to come into. “We’ve recruited a pretty strong group.” The newest signing for Wyndham Devils is

Emilee Harmon, though of all the new recruits, she has probably been at the club the longest. Harmon has worked as a basketball development office with the Devils in recent months, but only just committed to playing with the club. “It seemed like the right fit that if she was going to be working here to play here,” Potter said. “She’ll be a great role model for the young players in our community.” Harmon was an NBL 1 All Star last year and has played division 1 college with Ohio State University. She is expected to provide a presence inside the paint. “She’s a tough competitor,” Potter said. “She’s that really effective and efficient player around the basket. “Very skilful, tough rebounder, tough defender, very honest competitor. “She can play that four, five role.” Ebony Rolph is a player with WNBL

experience with Bendigo and will also have an impact on the inside. The plan is for Rolph to form a formidable front court combination with Harmon. “She’s going to add a lot on both ends of the floor,” Potter said. “A really bouncy athlete who will get rebounds, block shots and change shots. “I’m really excited to see what she can do for us.” Wyndham Devils have bolstered their small forward position with the addition of Ieva Nagy. Nagy, a former Adelaide Lightning player, is coming back from a knee injury, but still have big expectations on her shoulders. “She adds something different in that wing position, a bit of versatility, a really good mid-range game, a pull up jump shot with a high release,” Potter said. “She’ll be that extra piece that will hopefully makes us competitive and contend again.” Lance Jenkinson

Football Western Bulldogs will begin their AFL Women’s campaign with an away game against St Kilda at RSEA Park on Saturday. The Nathan Burke-coached Bulldogs are breathing a sigh of relief after star midfielder Ellie Blackburn was cleared of any serious injury to her hand following a knock in a practice match against Geelong Cats recently. Blackburn was recently appointed captain of the Bulldogs for 2020.

United feels the heat By Lance Jenkinson Western United had to withstand the heat on two fronts to return home with a share of the points from a nil-all draw with Newcastle Jets in the A-League at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday evening. United’s defence was on the end of a barrage of attack from the Jets, but they somehow kept a clean sheet, through sheer luck and a stellar performance from goalkeeper Filip Kurto. The inexperienced United also had to contend with stifling hot and humid weather, but managed to stay focused and yield an important point on a tough away trip. After conceding four goals with Swiss cheese-like defence against Adelaide United six days earlier, coach Mark Rudan said the first priority for Western United was to shore up its defence. “We needed to rectify what happened last week, copping four goals, albeit a different

opposition,” Rudan said. “That was a starting base for the week was understanding our roles and responsibilities without the ball. “In that regard, I thought we were much better.” Chances on the attacking end were few and far between for Western United. The best opportunity fell to a tiring Max Burgess with 10 minutes to go, but he put his shot wide. Western United has promoted a lot of youth in the new year, partly to do with exits during the January transfer window and injuries to key players. With a lot of youngsters in the starting line up, Rudan was pleased to see how his side reacted when it was put under intense pressure from Newcastle, who had a whopping 26 shots on goal. Inexperienced players Oskar Dillon, Tomi Uskok and Josh Cavallo stepped up.

“It’s not ideal you can’t work with the same players all the time, but it gives an opportunity to somebody else and hope to somebody else,” Rudan said. “They all put their hand up and put their best foot forward.” Dillon was singled out for his work in defence since joining in the transfer window. “It’s incredible his rise, three games in, only 20 years of age and his last competitive game was back in October in the Queensland NPL and he hasn’t missed a beat,” Rudan said. Rudan used his platform to call on the A-League to reconsider its 5pm starts in the summer months in future seasons. He believes the players welfare is compromised when the temperatures hit the high 30s and the fans do not get value for money. United has a bye this weekend, before their clash with Brisbane Roar on February 16 at Mars Stadium in Ballarat.

Werribee is back into Bowls Victoria division 1 finals contention after an 80-66 win over Essendon at Chirnside Park on Saturday. The Bees claimed two of the four rinks with a tie thrown in, adding 15 vital premiership points to their tally. Peter Yasar had the biggest win of the day, downing Luke Milesi 22-12. The other Bees winner was Robert Smith, who edged out Steve Lyon 19-13. The Bees will travel to Blackburn on Saturday for a meeting of two finals-chasing sides.

Baseball Werribee Giants remain in hot pursuit of ladder leaders Williamstown Wolves in the Baseball Victoria summer league division 2. The second-placed Giants keep winning, but remain one game back of the Wolves because they also keep racking up the wins. The John Curnow-coached Giants took care of business against finals contenders Moorabbin Panthers on Sunday, claiming a 5-2 victory at President’s Park. The Giants will get their chance to challenge for top spot in a three game series with Williamstown starting on Sunday at President’s Park.
