Ready for school Hoppers Crossing twins James and Jackson Daviès are set to join thousands of other youngsters across Wyndham who will be starting starting school this year. The twins will begin at Cambridge Primary School next month, which has about 1010 students from more than 46 cultural backgrounds. The twins’ mother, Jenny Daviès, said Jackson was “looking forward to the playground and doing craft” and that “James is looking forward to seeing his teacher everyday and his friends.” Alesha Capone
Wyndham flu cases soar By Esther Lauaki Influenza cases in Wyndham soared to nearly 3000 in the past year to December – more than five times the number recorded 12 months earlier, new data shows. The health department’s latest infectious diseases report states there were 2992 instances of flu within the municipality last year, up from just 585 in 2018. In August, Point Cook seven-year-old Calista was admitted to Werribee Mercy Hospital with a severe and life-threatening case of influenza. Parents Mark and JunJie Aves said they
rushed Calista to the emergency department after midnight and within three hours her condition had deteriorated and she went into cardiorespiratory arrest. “We were told that she was showing symptoms of pneumonia and further infection, but we weren’t prepared for the frightening events that were soon to follow,” Mr Aves said. “After going into cardiac arrest, the doctors performed chest compressions for 28 minutes and her heart stopped beating twice during that time. “The teams at Werribee Mercy Hospital definitely saved her precious life.”
Calista returned to the hospital with her mum, dad and baby brother Zachary in December to thank the various team members. Werribee Mercy Hospital perioperative and specialist services director Melissa McDonald said the hospital was well placed to deal with the influx of patients over the record flu season of last year. Ms McDonald said the health department also ordered record vaccinations to ensure it was available for all in need. “Werribee Mercy emergency department possesses a rapid flu test, known as an auto reader, which allows for quick and early detection of patients with influenza so they can
be cared for appropriately to reduce the spread of infection to other patients,” she said. “We will continue to provide updates to our various communities within the Mercy Health catchment areas concerning the availability and locations for immunisations as well as other advice to lessen the risk of contracting infection during the months ahead,” she said. The report showed influenza cases topped the list of infectious diseases detected in Wyndham, followed by chlamydia with 723 cases recorded (down from 814) and 274 cases of campylobacter commonly known as “gastro”.

Wildlife rescue service to close By Esther Lauaki A Point Cook animal rescue service is facing closure under the pressure of high costs and no public funding. Animal rescue volunteers Marcus Stadener and Elaine Osborne set up Point Cook Wildlife Care in 2016 to provide rescue, rehabilitation and release services for injured and orphaned wildlife. But the team, two of half a dozen wildlife volunteers that service the west, last week
announced they could no longer shoulder the expense of their work. Ms Osborne said the pair spent up to $20,000 a year including between $300 and $500 a week on food depending on what animals were in care, about $900 on medication and supplies and 2600 litres of water a week replenishing swan pools. “As the community is now more aware through the bushfire crisis we’ve been watching unfold, wildlife care in this country is not funded by anyone unless a crisis occurs – it
relies on good-hearted volunteers constantly digging into their own pockets,” Ms Osborne said. “Unfortunately our care and compassion for those in need has seen us spend close to $60,000 on feed, equipment, aviaries and repair, not to mention the additional fuel and utilities costs over the four to five years we’ve been operating.” Mr Osborne told Star Weekly that as a result of the high cost, coupled with her recent unemployment, Point Cook Wildlife Care
would close. “We are broken beyond belief and are at one of the lowest points in our lives,” she said. An online fundraising campaign has raised more than $2500 and Ms Osborne said the support from the community had left the team “gobsmacked”. “It has truly been beyond what we could ever have imagined – we honestly had no idea that our services in wildlife care meant as much to people as it does to us,” she said. Concern over cricket thefts
Top honour for school principal Ms Mason began her career in Melbourne’s west serving at Derrimut Heath, Glen Ordan and Wyndham Park primary schools. She will clock up 20 years at Baden Powell College in July. “From the day I started teaching, I loved it,” Ms Mason said. “I tell people that for the last 62 years, I’ve gotten up and gone to school. “Somewhere in the first year of teaching, I had a magic moment, where I knew I’d taught a child something. “From that moment onwards, I realised that it was such a privilege to do that. “I believe … innovation, kindness, really caring about kids and wanting to make a
difference to their lives, abounds in schools in the west.” Ms Mason’s commitment to serving the Wyndham community has spanned about 25 years through her involvement with Rotary. “I think Rotary and education collided for me, in a way, both – among many other others – are about putting a lot of support, thinking and planning for young people. “Rotary really does change lives for good, when you connect with Rotary only good ever comes from it.” Her efforts in both education and community service also earned Ms Mason Victorian Principal of the Year in 2015. A 22 year-old Hoppers Crossing driver allegedly crashed into a parked car last Wednesday. Police, fire crews and paramedics attended the scene around 8am, after the collision occurred on Hogans Road, Hoppers Crossing. The driver allegedly veered into the parked car, which was pushed around 50 metres along the road, while using his mobile phone. Police said the driver would be summonsed to court for careless driving and phone use.

Point Cook’s Julie Mason considers herself “very blessed” to have served the Wyndham community for more than two decades. The principal of Baden Powell College, which includes the Derrimut Heath Primary School campus in Hoppers Crossing and the Tarneit P-9 campus, received an Order of Australia Medal on Sunday for services to the community and to education. “I feel overwhelmed and very honoured,” Ms Mason told Star Weekly. “I would attribute this recognition to the opportunities I’ve had. “The people that you work with in anything you do lift you to heights that you would have never thought possible.”
Police have urged Wyndham residents to keep an eye out for people acting suspiciously around cricket clubs, after a series of thefts targeting local sports grounds. Acting Senior Sergeant Robbie Adams said an offender, or offenders, has been stealing mobile phones and watches during cricket matches. He said thefts had been reported at the Point Cook Cricket Club on January 10, the Werribee Cricket Club on January 11 and the Tarneit Cricket Club on December 29 last year. “We’re making the public aware in the hope someone knows the offender or has information to assist our enquiries,” Acting Senior Sergeant Adams said. “Moving forward, if anyone sees anything suspicious at local sporting grounds, please call triple-0.”

Police witnessed a 25 year-old Werribee driver allegedly perform a burnout near the intersection of Golden Avenue and Market Road at 8pm on January 18. Lunar festival fun The Lunar New Year festival will be held in the Point Cook Town Centre next month. The festival, organised by Point Cook Cultural Community, is set to attract around 25,000 people. The event will feature dancing, singing, drama, traditional costumes, martial arts and food trucks. Youngsters will be catered for with face-painting, decorative balloons, jumping castles, mini golf and fireworks. A truck from the Point Cook Fire Brigade will also be in attendance. Chinese culture will be on show, with an exhibition of works by Chinese artists depicting landscapes, portraits and abstract art, and a display of lanterns made by local children.
Phebe Yeo and her daughter, Andrea, supervised the recent lantern-making workshops in Point Cook. “The workshops provided a wonderful opportunity for students to not only to make lanterns but also to learn about the significance of lanterns to traditional living in China,� Ms Yeo said. The festival will showcase two traditional lion dances and a dragon dance, with the dragon – which has been imported from China – featuring a 10 metre-long tail. Ethan’s in a fight for life By Esther Lauaki Six-year-old Ethan is a sports and television-loving little boy who is facing a heartbreaking fight for life. On AFL Grand Final week last year, his parents Pranav and Shivani Desai, of Werribee, noticed Ethan was losing balance, slurring his speech and unable to do simple activities. Days later he was diagnosed with Diff use Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) a rare and aggressive childhood brain tumour with an average survival of just nine months from diagnosis. “Our world was shattered after learning that our beautiful boy and big brother to Ahaan has a rare and aggressive brain tumour,” Mr Desai said. “Ethan not only loves playing footy, tennis, cricket and basketball, he also values his time as we sit as a family and watch these together, whether it be in front of the television at home or at the stadium cheering our teams on.” No treatments are available in Australia for the disease so the Desai family is forced to travel to the United States in hopes of being accepted into a clinical trial which will cost more than $500,000. “It is breaking our hearts to see our little boy continually deteriorate at a rapid rate,” Mr Desai said. “DIPG almost exclusively attacks our youngest and most vulnerable, who should have their whole lives ahead of them and there is currently no cure.” An online fundraising campaign has raised nearly $90,000 towards the trial, travel and accommodation expenses. “We don’t have a day to waste,” Mr Desai said. “This tumour is savage … we are determined to fight and give Ethan every possible chance.” Donate: bit.ly/2ur5TPO

Burglars ransack house
Plan to revamp Presidents Park
By Alesha Capone A husband and wife have been left devastated after burglars ransacked their Point Cook house and stole many of their possessions, including their cars. The couple, who asked not be identified, said they were overseas when the thieves broke into their rental house. They said the burglary occurred between December 22 and 29, and the thieves would have most likely needed to make multiple trips to and from the house in order to transport the sheer volume of items they stole. The wife said that before breaking into the house, the offenders cut off the home’s electricity from the outside mains box. The offenders entered the house after removing tiles from the roof, cutting off the security sensor and removing an IP camera (a digital video camera which allowed the couple to monitor the home from online). In addition to stealing the couple’s three cars, the burglars stole three televisions, an Xbox, iPhone, iPad, MacBook, Samsung laptop and diamond and gold jewellery. The couple said the thieves also stole shoes, clothes, small pieces of furniture, kitchen appliances, a cat carrier bag, make-up and even bed sheets. “They took our credit card, Mastercard, some of our ID’s and also the Xerox copy of our passports, and other things,� the wife said. She said the burglary has had “a significant impact� upon her and her husband’s lives. “We are totally messed up now,� she said. “We weren’t able to stay at that home, due to the fear of the offenders, if they could come back again.� The woman said she, her husband and their cats were staying in the living room of a friends’

share house. “Our real state agent still didn’t fi x everything in our home yet, we are paying the rent as well,� she said. To make matters worse, last year the woman’s husband lost his job. Unfortunately, the couple did not have
contents insurance either. The woman said she and her husband had reported the burglary to police. One of their cars was found burnt out in Bacchus Marsh on January 19. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
A new hockey pitch, an upgraded baseball pavilion and an all-abilities play space are among the features planned for a revamped Presidents Park. Residents can give feedback on Wyndham council’s draft master plan for Presidents Park, Wyndham Vale, which proposes a range of upgrades over the next 10 years. The draft plan is out public comment until January 31. Sports development portfolio holder, Cr Peter Maynard encouraged locals to let council know which aspects they like and give suggestions for enhancing it. “The draft plan proposes to make the park even more beautiful, with new landscaping along the lake and Werribee River and a new arts heritage walking trail,� Cr Maynard said. “New walking paths from the east to the west will make the park easier to traverse, while trail loops with distance markers will reveal how many metres runners have conquered – and how many they have to go. “There will be exercise equipment suitable to people of all age groups, from toddlers to seniors, and the dog school’s training area will be improved. “I’m particularly excited about the proposal for a new hockey pitch and upgrades to the hockey pavilion, which will encourage even more youngsters to pick up a stick and give the sport a go.� Feedback: theloop.wyndham.vic.gov. au Esther Lauaki

Migrants flock to Wyndham By Alesha Capone Wyndham has become home to the second-highest number of migrants in the state, within a 12-month period. Of the 84,327 migrants who came to Victoria during the 2018-19 financial year, 5525 settled in Wyndham. Out of the state’s 79 municipalities, only the City of Melbourne recorded more newly-arrived people settling within its borders, with 7030 migrants, according to statistics from the Department of Home Affairs. - Richard Dove Centre settlement services co-ordinator Richard Dove said it was important for migrants to engage with their new communities, through factors such as employment and education. “If a person feels good, they will feel engaged,� he said. Mr Dove said it was also important for programs to be funded to help support
migrants, with workers in roles such as engagement and settlement. “You can’t just plonk people in a new country and expect them to fit it – you have to be able to work at it and help them fit in,� he said. Mr Dove said it was particularly important to help migrants feel engaged during their first six to 12 months in a new nation. “If you don’t find a way to help people feel positive in their environment, negativity can set in for years,� he said. “If you get somebody who comes as a doctor but ends up working as a taxi-driver, the rest of the community knows their doctor is driving a
cab, so they think, ‘if our doctor can’t even get a job, what hope is there for the rest of us’?� Mr Dove said overall, migration was a positive for the community, but required work just like any relationship. “You only have to look at the Italian story, to see what the Italians have brought to Wyndham,� he said. “Obviously, that was a different time and the community was much smaller then, but they all went through teething problems, found their niche in society and now Italians are seen to have made an extremely positive contribution to Wyndham.�
Festival to set sail The Werribee River Association is revving up preparations for the upcoming Small Boat Festival. Boat enthusiasts are invited to register for the inaugural festival at Werribee South on April 5, which will showcase unpowered watercrafts under five metres and low-powered boats. Committee member John Marks said the event would have something for all. “The festival will be a great opportunity for experienced boat people to showcase their vessels and skills as well as novices to come and try,� Mr Marks said. “There will be lots to discover with community stalls, activities, entertainers and boats and kayaks for hire.� Kids activities will include basic boat building, boat races, citizen science, water bug sampling, nature walks and tall tales from a resident pirate and mermaid.
A festival hub will be set up at JD Bellin Reserve next to the Werribee South Boat Ramp. Food and refreshments will be available for purchase. “We need to enjoy as well as protect our waterways, and what better way to do this than at the Werribee South Small Boat Festival,� Mr Marks said. House prices back on the rise By Alesha Capone Median house prices across Wyndham mostly increased in the December quarter last year, according to figures from the Real Estate Institute of Victoria. The REIV last week released data showing that median house prices for metropolitan Melbourne surpassed $850,000, between October and December 2019 (compared to $829,000 in the September quarter). The median house price in Tarneit rose 4.5 per cent (from $550,000 to $575,000).
The median house price in Werribee grew by 2.9 per cent (from $499,500 to $510,000). Point Cook houses recorded a 1.5 per cent median rise (from $660,000 to $670,000). Hoppers Crossing’s median house value remained steady at $532,000 between the September and December quarters. There were less than 30 house sales in Manor Lakes, Williams Landing and Wyndham Vale during the December quarter. Within this timeframe, Manor Lakes recorded a median house price of $552,500 (previously $541,500), Williams Landing
$737,500 (previously $690,000) and Wyndham Vale $472,000 (previously $460,000). Within metropolitan Melbourne, Port Melbourne recorded the highest increase in median house vales, rising 28.4 per cent to $1.67 million, followed by Strathmore with a 22.3 per cent increase to $1.46 million and Sunshine with a 22.2 per cent increase to $815,500. REIV president Leah Calnan said the December quarterly medians showed the long-term strength of the Victorian property market, returning to strong growth after a short period of uncertainty. “These are
outstanding figures; the Victorian real estate sector continues to soar and set new heights.” Ms Calnan said. “Buying in Victoria is a great investment, house and unit values are growing across the entire state.” The Housing Industry Association (HIA) also released a report into new home sales last week, based on a monthly survey of the largest volume home builders in the five largest states. The report said that new home sales in the three months to November last year were 2.8 per cent higher than in the previous three months.

Another sticker bears the name of Mr Andrews’ father Daryl, who died after suffering blood cancer. The couple said their friend Tania, a Disney fan, had donated the Ford they will drive for the rally. The car is decorated with images the Frozen character Olaf and Mr Andrew has also installed orange lights on the vehicle “for fun”. Brendan Andrew and Carmen Green are preparing for an automotive adventure across the outback. In May, the Werribee couple will take part in the Shitbox Rally’s autumn event, in which they will drive a 1993 Ford Laser more than 4000 kilometres to raise funds for the Cancer Council, starting in Alice Springs. Every year, hundreds of drivers join the Shitbox Rally, in which participants drive cars worth $1000 or less. Rally teams must also raise at least $5000. “People think we’re mad, but I think you have got to have a bit of madness to do what we’re doing,” Mr Andrew said. Mr Andrew and Ms Green have been busy fundraising since before Christmas, and are also seeking sponsors and donations. For every $20 donation, they will give donors a sticker on which to write the name of a loved one who has experienced cancer. All the

Bowls aids fire fund Members of the Hoppers Bowls Club have played in a marathon competition to raise funds for bushfire-affected communities and local CFA brigades. The club’s president Steve Bartlett and secretary Glenn Voysey played lawn bowls for 100 ends against other club members on January 11. The two men bowled 300 bowls each during the 11-hour event, which ran from 10am to 9pm without a break. Between them, Mr Voysey and Mr Bartlett also walked more than 25,000 steps. The Hoppers Crossing club also conducted a raffle and donated half of its bar takings for the
day to victims of the bushfires. In addition, the club hosted a barbecue in return for a gold coin donation. The club raised $4513 on the day, surpassing their original target of $1000. Mr Voysey said everyone who took part in the fundraising event should be proud. “Never did I think we would get this amount raised,” he said. Teens charged over motor vehicle thefts
By Esther Lauaki Chirnside Park’s multi-million dollar revamp is ready to roll. The upgrade of the Werribee sports facility’s oval aimed to create a more sustainable playing surface. Council environment and sustainability portfolio holder Heather Marcus said council had installed a new irrigation system and replaced the playing surface with a natural grass – called Santa Ana Couch – that requires less water to stay green.

“Council has invested a total of $2.4 million to replace the playing surfaces of ovals at Chirnside and Galvin Parks, with the latter to be finished by March,” Cr Marcus said. “With summer and hot days upon us, the benefits of the Chirnside Park Oval redevelopment will be experienced immediately. “The oval will be able to stay green and healthy with minimal water, making it much more sustainable. “With much of Australia experiencing a drought, council is proud to be doing all we can to preserve water, a precious resource.” Cr Marcus said the soil and turf being replaced at the oval had been gifted to Victoria University, to be used at sports facilities at its Werribee campus. “Not only are we upgrading our sports grounds, but we’re ensuring our old materials are reused and recycled,” Cr Marcus said.

Sports development portfolio holder Peter Maynard said Wyndham council was proud to enhance the playing surface of one of its premier football and cricket ovals. “This new, sustainable playing surface will ensure the
oval continues to host many top-class sporting and community events for years to come,” Cr Maynard said. “We’d like to thank the Werribee Cricket Club for their patience as we undertook these important works.”
Wyndham police have arrested two teenagers, aged 13 and 15 years old, in relation to thefts of and from motor vehicles. Around 3pm on January 20, police responded to reports of two youths who were allegedly driving erratically on a quad bike and motorbike in the Wyndham Vale area. Further investigation led to the recovery of three allegedly stolen vehicles and the quad bike. Some of the vehicles were allegedly stolen from farms located in the Werribee South area. Between them, the two male youths were charged with careless driving, four counts of theft from a motor vehicle, one count of attempted theft from a motor vehicle, one attempted theft of a motor vehicle, and theft of a motor vehicle. One of the youths was also charged with committing an indictable offence while on bail. The 15-year-old has been released pending summons. The 13-year-old was bailed to face a children’s court at a later date. The investigation is still ongoing. Anyone with further information is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Series inspires greener living A “bigger and better” Green Living series returns to Wyndham next month with more than 40 events to inspire residents to live more sustainably. The annual program, running through February and March, includes a variety of events held at locations across Wyndham. Wyndham environment and sustainability portfolio holder, Cr Heather Marcus encouraged residents to check out the range of events on offer. “This is the seventh year we’ve held the Green Living series. It launched in 2014 as a trial, with just 10 events attended by 179 people,” Cr Marcus said. “Last year we had more than 40 events, with around 4,100 people attending – and I’m confident this year will be bigger and better than ever before.” The launch of this year’s series, on February 1, will include a screening of the documentary 2040 followed by a question and answer session with film director Damon Gameau. “This film follows Gameau, concerned about his daughter’s future, as he travels the world in search of new and innovative approaches and solutions to climate change.” Other highlights of the series include food demonstrations and tastings, seaweed foraging, information sessions on solar energy, sustainable fashion, Aboriginal cultural activities and a tour of Mount Rothwell. An Altona Meadows woman is urging pet owners to be aware of snakes after her boarder’s dog was bitten by a tiger snake last week. Last Thursday, Rocky was back home four days after being rushed to intensive care at U-Vet Werribee Animal Hospital. Irene Rogers took to social media to alert pet owners that snakes were on the move. “I live a block from Skeleton Creek in Altona Meadows,” she posted.

“Today, my boarder’s dog Rocky was bitten by a metre-plus tiger snake in my backyard. I’m in Waratah Drive. This is not the first snake that I’ve had in my backyard. “Thanks to Stewy the Snake Catcher who was able catch the snake. “Please all be vigilant in this area as there are many children and animals that are vulnerable.” Stewart Gatt, aka Stewy the Snake Catcher, said when he arrived at the property the snake was going back and forth into a neighbouring yard before being caught for relocation. “Just be wary,” he said. “The snakes will come into our properties looking for water, especially on those really warm days. “If you do hear your dog barking, go out and check out what it’s barking at. “I wanted to share my journey, so as a big fan of this pageant I thought I would join it and share my story and be more visible.” The discovery came as she was also pursuing her dream of becoming a registered nurse. Now working at Werribee Mercy Hospital, the experience has cemented her sense that transitioning was the right decision. “To me nursing is not a career, it’s way of life. It taught me more about life itself, the flow of life, how life starts and how life ends,” she said. “That pushed me into being true to myself, I knew life was short.” The 11th annual Miss Gay & Miss Trans Australia pageants will be held at Williamstown Town Hall on February 1. Vienna Salvo has always known who she was, but that person did not match the body in which she was born. Growing up in poverty in The Phillippines as a boy called Christian, Ms Salvo hid her true self and conformed to what was expected of an ordinary young boy. “Since I was three years old I always thought I was a girl, I was very feminine in my feelings and interests, the only thing different was my appearance,” she said. “In The Phillippines it was all about survival, people did not have the luxury to pursue dreams, you simply had to survive.” Ms Salvo moved to Australia and settled in Hoppers Crossing, but still struggled with her identity until coming across the Miss Trans Australia pageant. She said this marked the first moment she had found other people who had struggled through what she had been struggling through her whole life. “My family always told me to be manly, but then I discovered this pageant and this was something that was very new to me.” Ms Salvo entered the 2019 Miss Trans Australia pageant, held at Williamstown Hall, emerging as the winner. She credits her involvement with the pageant with finally giving her the confidence to fully be herself. “I began my transition just two years ago; it was my way to show myself that I want to be my best version of myself, who I always wanted to be since I was young,” she said.

MY WYNDHAM Shakyra Clark owns The Picture Framing Shak in Hoppers Crossing. She speaks with Alesha Capone. How long have you been here? I’ve had the business for 6.5 years. It was here before that for three or so years, with the previous owner. I did have my own photography studio here before taking over the business. What do you enjoy about running the business?

I love that it’s creative, it’s probably not what people think. Very rarely do we frame photos, we frame lots of different things – footy jumpers, baby shoes, war medals and canvas for instance. I love how creative it is, seeing different original art come in – I guess that’s what I enjoy, finding out the story behind the art. We’ve framed rugs, and sometimes it will be little mementoes that are important to a person. We’ve framed a first house key, that was pretty cool. We’ve done children’s christening dresses and collars for dogs that have passed away.
I make the frames, as well as Steve and Amber who work here. I also do the social media, the marketing, all the websites. For us, the main thing is that we specialise in conservation framing. We use glass which provides UV protection and use archival-quality mats which doesn’t damage art. We do everything in-house, too.
It’s a bit of a shrinking industry I guess, there are two other framers in Werribee, we’re a small industry. A scheme under which pensioners can have their pets desexed at half price has been worked out by the Australian Veterinary Association and accepted by Werribee Shire Council. It is hoped, through the scheme, that a significant reduction in the number of stray cats and dogs may be brought about.
Motorists travelling to and from Hoppers Crossing will no longer be faced with delays and traffic congestion following the long awaited opening of the Forsyth Road overpass last week. The overpass and traffic interchange gives motorists direct access on and off the Princes Highway at Hoppers Crossing and is expected to relieve traffic congestion at the Werribee exit.
Tens of thousands of dollars worth of jewellery, electrical goods and tools were among items stolen during more than a dozen burglaries, break-ins and raids around Wyndham and Laverton in the past week. Detectives from Werribee’s Criminal Investigation Unit (CIU) have called on the public for help in solving a number of the crimes, many which took place in broad daylight or near main roads.
Inspirational Little River teenager Rosalind McFadyen has defied the odds all her life. The 17-year-old, who was born with the rare Ivemark syndrome, was announced this year’s winner of the city’s Young Achiever Award at Wyndham’s Australia Day celebrations yesterday.

The end of the road for Luke Hughes as a professional with Melbourne Aces in the Australian Baseball League is drawing near. But Hughes is hopeful the full stop on his playing career will not end this weekend. Hughes dreams of tasting the ultimate glory with the Aces before hanging up the cleats. Standing in his way is the Auckland Tuatara, who the Aces will face in a mouth-watering three-game semi final series starting at Melbourne Ballpark on Thursday night. Games two and three, if required, will be in Auckland on Saturday and Sunday. Hughes is hoping to go out with a bang the following weekend, not a wimper his weekend. It will also be the last chance for the hard hitter to extend his record for most home runs in the ABL. “I’ve been fortunate enough to play in the league since it started 10 years ago,� Hughes said. “There’s a few guys hot on my heels who will take hold of that record very soon.� Hughes feels privileged to have had a long and decorated career in a sport he loves. The 35-year-old played at the highest levels, representing Australia internationally and being on major league rosters with Minnesota Twins, Oakland Athletics and Toronto Blue Jays. It was with the Twins where he enjoyed his most success, playing 106 games for 69 hits and eight home runs. The high point of his career was his first at-bat in the majors, when he blasted a home run off superstar pitcher Max Scherzer to silence the fans in Detroit. “It was a fantastic ride,� Hughes said. “I’m glad to play have played 10 years in the

Clemente ready to step up By Lance Jenkinson Michael Clemente will make his TCR Australia Touring Car Series debut on the grand stage at Albert Park on Formula 1 grand prix weekend in March. The eyes of the world will be on the young up-and-coming racing car driver from Sanctuary Lakes as he takes his step up to a higher class of motor racing. “To be participating at the Formula 1 event is something huge,� Clemente said. “It’s an internationally recognised circuit and there’s a lot of meda and hype. “I can’t wait to get out there and finish my first race, get that one under my belt. “We’re all very excited.� Clemente has dominated the Excel racing series in recent years. The 18-year-old won an Excel series national championship and was named the CAMS rising star winner. He knew it was time for a new challenge, so he got in contact with Wall Racing team to do testing over one weekend last year and did so with great outcomes for him and his team. “On that test day, we were quite successful,� Clemente said. “We were the fastest on track, which is really good to see because there was a lot of experience drivers and a lot of people familiar with these cars.� It all snowballed from there for Clemente. He bought the Honda Civic that he tested in and immediately went to work to get it up to scratch for TCR racing. Then he launched his own team, Michael Clemente Motorsport. “A lot of people in the team have been with me since day one, so it’s really cool we’re running our own team,� Clemente said.

Clemente knows he will be the small fish in the big TCR pond in his rookie season, but that does not faze him. The Emmanuel College graduate is in it for the long haul and will not stop until he rises to the top. “I know starting out we’ll be mid-pack or towards the back, so there’s not really high expectations to start off with, but I just know that with time, we’ll eventually get our way to the front of the grid.� Clemente describes his introduction to car
racing as “a little bit of a weird one�. He did not inherit the passion for racing, even though his dad Danny had a passion for cars and once restored a mustang. “In terms of racing, there was no one in my family who had done it before,� Clemente said. “I remember one day, I was in the backyard driving the golf buggy for about two hours and I smashed the fence. “Dad thought it would be a good idea to get me out of there and put me in dodge ’em cars,
so it really started from there.� Clemente’s passion for racing grew at the Geelong Go Kart club. Dominic Albanese took Clemente under his wing and mentored him about the finer points of kart racing. After plenty of success in the go karts, Clemente turned to the Excel racing series, where he found another mentor in David Burn, who helped with the technical aspects of racing. Clemente is excited by what lies ahead in the TCR series this year.

AFLW Western Bulldogs had a successful final hit out before the AFL Women’s season, finishing strongly to beat Geelong by 12 points at the VU Whitten Oval on Saturday. The Bulldogs kicked four goals to two in the last quarter to emerge victorious after scores were level at three quarter time. Bonnie Toogood was superb for the Bulldogs with three goals, while Kirsten McLeod added two. The Bulldogs will now look ahead to their season opener against St Kilda at RSEA Park on February 9.

After twice fighting back from deficits to equalise, Western United did not have another comeback in it, as it conceded the final goal of the match to lose 4-3 to a persistent Adelaide United on Sunday. It was a game that will live long in the memory of those who love attacking football, but not so for the respective defensive units of the two sides. Concerns are growing over Western United’s leaky defence, which has conceded 10 goals in the past four games. “It was an incredible game, it was crazy at times,” Western coach Mark Rudan said. “They were very good at identifying space. “They picked their moments and they had a bit of quality. “That was most disappointing that we were able to give them some pretty easy shots on goal in the box.” The Australia Day contest was one of the games of the season. You could tell from early on that it was not going to be a dull affair as Nikola Mileusnic opened the scoring for Adelaide in the ninth minute. After two early misses, Besart Berisha, celebrating his 200th A-League game, netted an equaliser in the 12th minute and celebrated with the Western Service Crew supporter group. The goal was finished by Berisha, but it was delivered by Max Burgess, who carved his way through the Adelaide defence to find Berisha, who powered home on his left boot.

Western United coach Mark Rudan was disappointed with his side’s defensive performance.
It might be top versus bottom in the battle between Point Cook and Seabrook in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 3, but both sides will head into the second day’s play at Bruce Comben Reserve this Saturday with hope of a victory. Point Cook boldly declared on 9-210 in an attempt to snare a late wicket before stumps on day one, but it backfired with Seabrook advancing to 0-12 off the final six overs and gaining a little bit of momentum. Seabrook requires a further 199 with all 10 wickets in hand to cause what would be the upset of the summer in the division. In division 2, Werribee Centrals, who finished on 0-9, is strongly placed against Williamstown CYMS, requiring just 129 more runs for victory.

“He continues to score goals and that’s what he gets paid to do. “Two hundred games, it’s a great achievement for Bes.” In the 54th minute, Alessandro Diamanti put Western United on level terms with cracking long range goal. It seemed like United had the momentum to go on and take all three points, but hometown hearts were broken when Adelaide super sub Nathan Konstandopoulos bobbed up to score the winner. Western United is clinging to a spot in the top six ahead of a trip to bottom-ofthe-ladder Newcastle Jets on Saturday evening.
