Ms Hansen, who is also known as Kitty, will this week celebrate 12 months since she underwent a life-saving operation to receive a donated kidney and pancreas. Ms Hansen has organised a weekend round-robin netball tournament, to raise funds and awareness for Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation. Ms Hansen is an ambassador for the foundation, which aims to “empower” people to discuss their wishes about becoming an organ donor with their loved ones.
Ms Hansen – who is also an ambassador for Kidney Health Australia – said doctors told her she had only around 12 months to live, if she did not receive a new kidney. She received the news after suffering her third heart attack, on her 32nd birthday. Ms Hanson said paramedics spent 90 minutes working to bring her back to life, and she was declared clinically dead for 10 of those minutes. Aside from the heart attacks, Ms Hansen was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was aged three. In 2013, she spent 12 days in a coma, after a car accident which required her to learn to walk and talk again. After the accident, she was diagnosed

with Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome, which can cause seizures and even death. “I also have an acquired brain injury, so I don’t feel my fingertips, I can’t write my name easily and I get confused very easily,” Ms Hansen said. However, Ms Hansen continues to remain positive, and said she that would be “eternally grateful” to the person who donated their kidney and pancreas to her, plus their family.
“I’m quite aware there is a family who is no longer whole,” she said. “The day I had my greatest day, they had their greatest loss.” Her netball tournament will be held at 10am on Saturday, and will include a screening of the documentary Dying to Live, about Ms Hansen’s medical journey. A 32-year-old woman has been charged after a baby boy was allegedly left in a car at Point Cook last Wednesday. Emergency services were called to the carpark of The Brook hotel in Sneydes Road about 3.15pm, after reports a child had been left in a car. The 14-month-old boy was taken to hospital in a critical condition. The woman, from Gladstone Park, has been charged with negligently causing serious injury and reckless conduct endanger life. She was
bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on January 23. Kidsafe Victoria last year launched a campaign titled “‘Do Not Leave Children Unattended in Cars”. Kidsafe Victoria general manager Jason Chambers said that children should not be left alone in cars, even for a short period of time. “The temperature inside a parked car can be 20-30 degrees warmer than the outside temperature, which means on a typical Australian summer day, the temperature can reach over 50 to 60 degrees degrees in a matter

Celebrating all Australians Point Cook siblings Nico and Amira are getting into the spirit of Australia Day ahead of Sunday. The pair’s mother, Claire Greenwood, is a professional face and body artist who runs a business called Paint My Party. Nine-year-old Amira and eight-year-old Nico said they enjoyed having their faces painted with Australian themes. Ms Greenwood said that when working as a face-painter on Australia Day, she could paint images including koalas, kangaroos and indigenous designs on children’s faces.
“I can do lots of Australian animals, flags and boomerangs,” she said. Amira said January 26 was both a cause for celebration and acknowledging the impact European settlement has had upon the nation’s indigenous population. “I think Australia Day is both happy and sad,” she said. “It’s happy because it celebrates where everyone has come from all over Australia, bit it’s kind of sad as well because Aboriginal people were here first then we sort of took over.” Wyndham council will host a free Australia
Day event in Werribee’s CBD on Sunday from 5-10pm, featuring family entertainment including live music, kids activities, market stalls and a laser light show in Watton Street. The Street Food zone will have a selection of food trucks and the program will also include a screening of the film Red Dog, with picnics welcome in Station Street’s Pop Up Park. During 2019, RACV’s ERA crews responded to 843 calls to help children locked in vehicles, usually by accident. RACV’s general manager of public policy, Bryce Prosser, said younger children were particularly at risk. “Research shows that younger children are more sensitive to heat than older children and adults, as their body temperatures rise five times faster,” he said.
Bus support for fire fund A Truganina-based bus company has set up a $250,000 fund to assist employees and community members affected by the Australian bushfires. ComfortDelGro Corporation Australia (CDC) has dubbed the fund “the CDC We Care Fund”. Money from the fund will be distributed to help firefighting efforts and support families with immediate housing and living needs. In addition, CDC employees who have been forced to evacuate their houses, or who have lost their homes as a result of the fires, will be eligible for individual grants to assist their short-term financial needs. CDC is also supporting firefighting efforts by providing paid leave and transport services to emergency service volunteers, as well as offering counselling services to staff and their families affected by the fires. Charges over student’s death

WorkSafe Victoria has laid three charges against the Department of Education and Training, relating to an incident in which a student in a wheelchair tipped over at the base of a ramp at Warringa Park School in Hoppers Crossing in November 2018. The seven-year-old boy suffered a head injury and died four days later. WorkSafe alleges the department failed to maintain the ramp, document supervision and mobility requirements of its students; and appropriately train its teachers in documented supervision of its students.

Art for charity’s sake A bushfire relief charity auction and exhibition will be held in Newport next month. Altona artist Simpson Myers has teamed up with the RedWest Creatives Co-op, a group for artists and performers from the west, to host the event at the Longspace Gallery. The exhibition will donate half of the funds raised to Wildlife Victoria and the other half to the Indigenous Community Fire Relief Fund. Ms Myers, who mainly works with oil paints and embroidery, said she had originally intended to host a solo exhibition, but instead decided to join with other artists to make the event a fundraising effort for bushfire affected communities. “Every artist I spoke to was working on art related to the bushfires, had already donated to another fundraiser or

working on something of their own to help out,� she said. RedWest vice-president Leesa Gray-Pitt said several artists from RedWest had donated works to be sold at the exhibition. “It still surprises me, how lovely and willing people are to give,� she said. Ms Gray-Pitt said that around 15 artists had donated pieces so far, but the event organisers hoped 20 to 30 artworks would donated in total. The Artist Aid Auction will be held 7pm, Friday, February 7, at Longspace Gallery, 419 Melbourne Road, Newport. The event will also feature donation boxes for cash donations. A 45-year-old Wyndham Vale man has been charged with theft of copper wiring and tools, during an operation carried out by Ballarat police. Since December 27, officers have arrested 25 people as part of the operation, which is targeting crimes including aggravated burglaries, car theft and arson within the Ballarat area. The Wyndham Vale man has been remanded in custody.

Court safety fears grow By Alesha Capone Long serving Wyndham councillor Kim McAliney has expressed fears for the safety of family violence survivors who attend Werribee Magistrates Court. Cr McAliney, who holds the council’s safer communities portfolio, said there was only one entry to the court, which posed a “security risk” for people who had experienced family violence and did not wish to encounter the perpetrator before going into a courtroom. Cr McAliney said there was no remote witness facility available to the court, no safe room, no duress button in the lawyer’s office and limited privacy in the court’s foyer areas. She said lawyers were also often forced to meet with their clients under the court’s stairwell, due to a lack of interview rooms. A carpet-covered pinboard was often used as a security screen in the courtroom, as a shield between family violence victims and offenders, Cr McAliney said. She said with only two courtrooms – including one for VCAT – the Werribee court was often “overcrowded”. “The building cannot accommodate the sheer number of people requiring legal intervention, without compromising safety,” Cr McAliney said. A state government spokesperson said: “We’re working closely with Wyndham City Council, Corrections Victoria and Victoria Police to develop a modern, fit-for-purpose court facility in Werribee.” A Court Services Victoria (CSV) spokesperson said the 2016 Court Services Victoria Strategic Asset Plan identified Wyndham as “a high priority region requiring a new purpose-built court”.

CSV received funding in the 2017-18 state budget for planning for a new Wyndham law court, and funding in the 2018-19 budget for acquisition of land. The CSV spokesperson said the existing Werribee court was recently upgraded, with safety and security works including the replacement of the registry counter “to create
separation of parties and a sense of privacy at the counter and to improve service delivery”. The spokesperson said two new offices were also constructed on the upper floor, for support workers “which included changes to respondent and applicant facilities to improve the separation of parties and enhance safety for court users”.

The council is calling on local businesses, which have the potential to expand or enter into new markets, have a competitive brand position or are seeking to drive product or service innovation to apply for the program. Cr Walter Villagonzalo, who holds Wyndham’s future focused economy portfolio, said businesses which have been operating in Wyndham for a minimum of 12 months and up to four years were eligible for the program. “Applications for this program are open until February 2, 2020, which aims to help Wyndham owners grow their business and benefit from specialist resources including one-to-one business coaching,” Cr Villagonzalo said. “The program is fully-funded and includes six group knowledge sessions and up to 20 hours of individual business coaching. “The one-on-one coaching sessions provide the opportunity for businesses to develop growth strategies and plan their implementation.” Innovate to Excelerate will run from March 5 to June 26, including five 2.5 hour workshops at the Wyndham Civic Centre, a full-day workshop and up to 20 hours of individual business coaching, with coaching sessions held weekly. Heritage church restored By Alesha Capone A large-scale restoration project at the heritage-listed Crossroads Uniting Church in Werribee has been completed. Formerly known as St Thomas the Apostle, the site opened as a Presbyterian church on September 28, 1884. The land, church and manse were funded by the Chirnside family, with Thomas Chirnside laying the foundation stone in February 1884. Last year, restoration work began on the slate roof on the bluestone manse and church. Ken Storey, congregational chair and member of the church’s property control group, which oversaw the restoration project, said stonework was also carried out on the church’s chimney. “Throughout the project we have been very fortunate to have many skilled people contributing to the tasks of getting the roof of the manse and church completed,” Mr Storey said. “It was at times difficult, but all stuck to their tasks. “The work on the chimney on the vestry roof is really great and that chimney has a door, or lid if you like, over the opening. “This was carefully refurbished, then fi xed in place as it was a hundred-plus years ago.” Mr Storey said the church community would like to thank Heritage Victoria’s Living Heritage program and the Uniting Church in Australia Synod of Victoria and Tasmania, for arranging the funding which made the restoration project possible. He also thanked the church council, Wyndham council and Port Phillip West Presbytery for supporting the project.
Rail parking spot closed The gravel area behind Bunnings in Werribee is no longer available for public parking, as a result of preparations to remove the Cherry Street level crossing. The Level Crossing Removal Project (LCRP) has set up a site compound for its workforce on the railway land, ahead of major construction starting. Temporary offices, equipment, storage areas and workforce parking will be set up within the site and will be in place until the end of 2022. A letter from the Cherry Street level crossing removal project team, distributed to nearby residents, said there would be an increase in truck movements within the area while construction materials and equipment are transported to the site. The letter said some trees and vegetation will need to be protected and others removed in order to construct a new road bridge, Vegetation removal works will take place in two phases, primarily within the rail corridor along Railway Avenue, and adjacent to Wyndham council’s offices, Tarneit Road and Princes Highway. The first phase will begin mid-January and the second phase will begin in the middle of the year. The letter said there would be “occasional“ temporary lane closures on Cherry Street, Market Road and Railway Avenue during off-peak hours, from 9.30am to 3.30pm.

Anger over intersection inaction By Alesha Capone
Music journey begins early At just 12 years old, Kristina Bogic has released her first single. The young Point Cook resident said that she started singing at the age of four and playing piano at age eight. At nine, she penned her first song. “I love being on stage and singing in front of people, I get a real rush when the lights come on and the audience is quiet, waiting for you to start,” Kristina said. Kristina said it felt both surreal and exciting to release her first single, titled Learn my Limits, produced by Michael Kroll. “I wrote Learn my Limits when I was being bullied at school,” she said. “It was a really tough time for me and writing this song has helped me to express myself.” Kristina said she first performed Learn my Limits at last year’s Wyndham Rising Stars Competition, which she ended up winning. “I won an artist development recording package through Universal School of Music,” Kristina said. Apart from music, Kristina also trained as a state swimmer and dreamed of swimming at the Olympics, but was forced to quit due to a shoulder injury. A Wyndham councillor has called on the state government to urgently fund the installation of traffic lights at a notorious Point Cook intersection. Cr Kim McAliney, Wyndham’s safer communities portfolio holder and a member of the RoadSafe Westgate committee, said the council sent a letter about the Point Cook Road and Sneydes Road intersection to the state government during October last year. A response from the Minister for Roads Jaala Pulford, which the council received this month, said: “Funding any improvements at this intersection will be considered in a statewide context, as part of a future funding program.” Bur Cr McAliney said the council did not want to wait six months to see if funding for the intersection’s upgrade was included in the state government’s next budget. “I want some action now, not to wait and see if we get something in the budget,” she said. “It’s the number one priority in Point Cook. “We’ve been lobbying for this since I was on council, since 2016.” The council is responsible for Sneydes Road, while the state government is responsible for Point Cook Road. Cr McAliney said that Wyndham council had already committed around $3 million to upgrade the intersection, including $250,000 to develop designs “so that the project is shovel-ready”. “Now, we’re asking them (the state government) to come to the party before a death occurs at this intersection,” Cr McAliney said. Point Cook Action Group president Bob Fairclough said motorists waiting to turn right at the intersection often “lost patience”. The state government was contacted for comment.

New work begins on old Bridge By Alesha Capone
Champion of the community Giuseppe Inserra has an extensive history of service to the community. Mr Inserra, who is also known as Joe, is aged 83. He immigrated from Sicily to Australia during the 1960s. He lived in Werribee at first, before moving to Laverton. In 1985, Mr Inserra built the Laverton Skate Centre, so his five children could learn to skate. At the age of 50, Mr Inserra also learned to skate himself, and still enjoys rollerblading today. Mr Inserra has a long list of involvement in many community causes. During the 1990s, after big banks closed their Laverton branches, the Laverton Retail Traders Association decided to raise $350,000 worth of shares to start a community bank. Mr Inserra, a member of the association, helped raise the money. He served as a member of the Laverton Bendigo Bank Community Bank until the age of 80, and is now a community ambassador for the bank. Hobsons Bay Community Financial Services – a social enterprise which owns the Altona and Laverton Community Bank branches of the Bendigo Bank, and Point Cook Business Centre – last year presented Mr Inserra with its Community Partner of the Year. “I felt on top of the world, always in my life I try to help people,” Mr Inserra said.

Renovation works at the historic Bridge Hotel in Werribee will begin this week. The MoL Pub Group will start working on the Bridge Hotel, to create a new bar and restaurant in Watton Street. Wyndham council, which owns the hotel, last year ran a procurement process to select the new operators of the venue, and named the MoL Pub Group as the successful applicant. The MoL Pub Group also operate the Marquis of Lorne in Fitzroy, Union House in Richmond and the Mount Erica Hotel in Prahran. Appeal to help koalas A charity is appealing for farmers in Wyndham and Greater Geelong to allow tree-planting on their land, to help support the koala population of the You Yangs and Brisbane Ranges. The Koala Clancy Foundation, which aims to assist koalas in the wild through enhancement and protection of their natural habitat, regularly conducts tree-planting events to provide the native Australian animals with new homes. The foundation’s president Janine Duff y said the organisation was keen to hear from farmers with land located near rivers, creeks and dams. “The healthy koalas of the You Yangs and Brisbane Ranges are now more important than ever, with so many other koalas killed in recent bushfires,” Ms Duff y said. “Our koalas need homes urgently.”
According to the ABC, bushfires across the nation are estimated to have destroyed up to 30 per cent of koalas’ native habitat, with more than 10 million hectares of land razed by the blazes. Ms Duff y said that within Wyndham and Geelong, the Koala Clancy Foundation wanted to plant trees in areas located near Edgars Road, Ripley Road, Quandong Road, Little River, Quandong and Balliang East. She said the they hoped to plant native tree species including River Red Gums, Red Boxes, Grey Boxes and Yellow Gums, which are favoured by koalas. Teen jailed over home invasion By Alesha Capone A teenage boy who pleaded guilty to taking part in an aggravated home invasion in Wyndham has been sentenced to three and a half years in a youth detention centre. The 17-year-old boy, who was described with the pseudonym M.M, was sentenced in the County Court last month. The court heard M.M participated in the aggravated home invasion in November 2018 at a house in Peppermint Grove, Wyndham Vale, along with five other young men.
Judge Liz Gaynor said M.M and the four other youths tooks a sledgehammer and smashed in the back door of the house. When the female resident went to investigate, M.M demanded her car keys, while he was holding the sledgehammer. The court heard that he said to the woman: “Go inside the room so I don’t kill you”. After obtaining the keys to the woman’s Toyota Corolla, the youths drove away in the car, Judge Gaynor said. The offenders were later seen at a party held at an Airbnb property in Point Cook.

She said that a neuropsychologist had found M.M. had “low to average intelligence” and to have a severe language disorder. He also suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and a substance abuse disorder. The court heard that M.M started using cannabis at age 12, and also used benzodiazepine and cocaine. Judge Gaynor said M.M would eventually be released on parole, but did not specify when.
M.M admitted the offending to police after he was arrested in November 2018. The court heard the woman who lived in the Wyndham Vale house was “terribly frightened” by the home invasion and had given up her job working with the elderly. Her victim impact statement read: “I have had to go to extensive counselling and I have to take medication because I’m plagued with recurring nightmares. When I’m outdoors I’m in fear and I’m really suffering from trauma and anxiety”. Judge Gaynor said a report found M.M’s offending appeared to have occurred in

Actor Joshua Diaz is a star on the rise, with two films coming out next month. The former Wyndham Vale resident, and past player for the Wyndhamvale Falcons, has spent the past few years living between Australia and Los Angeles. While spending the last 18 months in LA, he filmed the romantic comedy Straight Up, playing the role of Zane. “It was great to be part of the film,” Mr Diaz said. “I really enjoyed the dialogue in the film. It’s quirky, it’s witty, it’s highly intelligent dialogue, which is something I definitely appreciate.” The other movie Mr Diaz stars in is Fantasy Island, a horror adaptation of the popular 1970s television show about a magical island resort. Wyndham council has received 20 objections to a planning permit seeking permission for the staged construction of a road, removal of native vegetation and alteration to the access of Ballan Road. The $4.65 million plan aims to construct a road – named Mount Mary Road – from Ballan Road, near Ripley Road, to St Arnaud Road in Eynesbury. The existing Mount Mary Road is an “unmade road” which is accessible via gates at both ends, and is used by the adjoining landowners and the CFA. Documents submitted with the planning permit said that Wyndham council required stage one of Mount Mary Road to be operational no later than the 1800th residential lot is built in Eynesbury. So far, more than 940 lots have been approved in Eynesbury, with 856 occupied dwellings. Under the road project’s first stage, the existing intersection of Ballan Road and Mount Mary Road would be modified to include line marking and signage. A “rural road” would also be constructed from Ballan Road to St Arnaud Road. The second stage of the project includes plans to widen the intersection and introduce dedicated left and right turn lanes, with the speed limit reduced to 80 kilometres per hour. Also during the second stage, the connection between Mount Mary Road and St Arnaud Road would be removed, to be replaced with an “urban road” that would extend further west and connect with Logan Street, or possibly another street. The planning permit has been lodged with both Wyndham and Melton councils, as Eynesbury falls between the two municipalities.
Erika Macapagal is looking forward to pursuing a career in which she will help children to learn and develop. Ms Macapagal, from Manor Lakes, graduated from the Kangan Institute with a diploma in early childhood education and care last month. During the graduation ceremony, Kangan presented Ms Macapagal – who hails from the Philippines – with an Outstanding International Student Award for Community Services. “I was ecstatic, I really didn’t expect the award,” she said. Ms Macapagal said that her future plans were to pursue a bachelor’s degree in her chosen field, and eventually become the director of a childcare centre. She said that she was inspired to become an educator, after she began tutoring children from China online three years ago. “I love the feeling of being able to be a part of a child’s life, being their guide, their friend and their mentor,” she said. “I am determined to help the children reach their full potential and be a good future adult.” Ms Macapagal said that she began studying at Kangan in July 2018. “All of these would not have happened if not for my family’s unconditional love, they are my number one critic and supporter, they are the best and I can’t thank them enough for everything that they do for me.” Alesha Capone

What kept you living in the west? I like it here and it was easy getting into the city. There is plenty of public transport and what-not, most of my jobs have always been in the west. What can you tell us about the Hobsons Bay Men’s Shed? This Men’s Shed is about nine years old. It started off as Altona and Williamstown separately, they combined and they got this property in Queen Street. I’ve been president the last six years. We do a lot of variety of work, woodwork, metal work, we’ve got a car club, computers, we’ve got a music group that is going to play on the day of the car show. At the moment we’ve got 370 members, which is unbelievable, most of them come from around this area. Can you tell us about your love of classic cars?

Leadership recognised For Eh Su, helping the Karen community is a matter close to his heart. A Settlement Engagement and Transition Support (SETS) case worker at the Wyndham Community and Education Centre, Mr Eh Su received an award from the Victorian Multicultural Commission last year. He received the Emerging Leadership in Multiculturalism Award, at the Victorian Multicultural Awards for Excellence. Mr Eh Su said that he felt like the award was not just for him, but all Karen cultural leaders working and volunteering to help their communities. “With the award, especially with the community of Burma, there are lots of community workers out there working hard for
their community and others, because of their big hearts, not for a salary,� he said. “I believe their hard work deserves to be recognised.� Mr Eh Su said that after arriving in Australia, he first lived in Tasmania, before moving to Victoria during 2013. He was working for another organisation in Werribee when he began volunteering at the Wyndham Community and Education Centre (WCEC), “doing anything and everything they needed me to�. Call to fix ’dangerous’ road By Alesha Capone Hundreds of people have signed a petition calling for traffic lights and pedestrian crossings to be installed on a “dangerous” section of Leakes Road in Tarneit. Resident Kapil Thakkar started the Change. org petition, which has been signed by more than 225 people, calling for action. Mr Thakkar said he started the petition, which applies to the part of Leakes Road which runs between Tarneit and Derrimut roads, because residents, especially children, were “risking their lives daily” when crossing the road.

Mr Thakkar said urgent action was required because Tarneit P-9 and Tarneit Senior colleges were located near one side of the road, with a large estate on the other. “I have witnessed, multiple times, kids just running across the road, which is very, very dangerous as the road is zoned 70 km/h, even during the school times,” he said. “Also, there are bus stops on both sides of
this patch [of road] and people on-boarding or off-boarding the buses have no option other than risking their lives while crossing to go either side.” Mr Thakkar said he would like to see the speed limit reduced to 40 km/h along the section of Leakes Road, and for a school crossing supervisor to be appointed during school times. “Permanent traffic lights and a zebra crossing should be installed, ideally near the Crossway Avenue T-intersection or the Monument Drive T-intersection, and would a be lifesaver for our residents,” he said. Wyndham council’s director of city innovation, economy and
liveability, Peter McKinnon, said the request to reduce the road’s speed limit to 40 km/h was the responsibility of the state government. “That said, council is conducting a review to inform a formal submission to the Department of Transport,” Mr McKinnon said. “In terms of the request to have a school crossing supervisor allocated to this section of Leakes Road, we will also be conducting a survey early this year to confirm whether traffic numbers and demand warrant this. “We will also be doing surveys based on demand and traffic to determine whether a pedestrian crossing or traffic lights should be installed along this stretch of road.”

If you want to learn to dance this year, get ready to swing into your new hobby. Swing Patrol, which runs swing dance classes across Melbourne, will resume teaching in Point Cook on February 5. Swing dancing is a partner dance of the 1920s to the 1940s, danced to swinging jazz tunes from the Big Band era. Point Cook teachers Bruce Frame and Celia Webb said they were passionate about sharing the dance and its history, and teaching in a relaxed manner with lots of laughs. “It’s not all about exercise either, you’ll meet a great group of like-minded adults of all ages, build confidence, learn new communication skills, become part of a wider community of Melbourne dancers,” Ms Webb said. Mr Frame said attendees at beginner classes did not need any experience or a partner. The classes run every Wednesday night at 7.30pm, at the Jamieson Way Community Centre. Wyndham council has launched a review of historic places within the municipality, some of which date from when European settlement occurred. The review aims to identify, assess, and protect places of heritage significance. Wyndham’s arts, culture and heritage portfolio holder, Cr Tony Hooper, said the review would focus on the period of when Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people first came into contact. Cr Hooper said the council was encouraging residents to have a say in the review. “Community nominations will be assessed by an independent heritage expert and reviewed alongside existing studies and databases,” he said. “The municipality has 135 sites of local significance, including dry stone walls, homesteads, mansions, gardens, infrastructure, and homes.” Nominations for the heritage review will be open until February 2, with a mapping tool to record nominations available at https://theloop. wyndham.vic.gov.au/heritage-review

Werribee Shire Council has had a change of mind and has made an application for funds to employ a children’s services officer funded by the Federal Government. Council decided not to employ a Children’s Services Development Officer when considering the estimates during September-October.
The new decade was off to a grim start after a week which saw two women killed on local roads. And according to police, both deaths could have been avoided if drivers had paid attention to the road laws.
Patrons and police have condemned a Hoppers Crossing nightclub following a violent incident involving a bouncer and a patron in the early hours of Sunday morning. The patron, 21-year-old Hoppers Crossing resident Mr Matthew Filbin, was taken to Werribee Mercy Hospital’s Emergency Department after he was struck in the face.
The death of an Altona man in a Laverton North forklift accident has been a sobering start to 2010, following last year’s spike in Victorian workplace deaths, which left families devastated and businesses bankrupt. A 60-year-old man became the first person to die in a Victorian workplace this year, when 200 kilograms of computer equipment being moved on a forklift fell and crushed him.

At the end of the sixth inning, Werribee Giants coach John Curnow could sense his side’s clash with Mulgrave Rebels in the Baseball Victoria summer league division 2 was slipping away. Trailing 4-1, the Giants needed a spark to get back into the contest, so Curnow provided it in the form of a good old fashioned spray. “I gave the guys a bit of a rev up after the sixth inning and they responded,” he said. “It wasn’t a convincing win, but we got over the line in the end.” Werribee delivered one of its most devastating blows on an opponent all season in a blistering seventh inning. The Giants pounded the Rebels pitchers for nine runs in that inning to take the game away in one fell swoop. “They got themselves on base, started moving each other over,” Curnow said.
“A couple of blokes who came in off the bench, like Andrew Maki and Reece Hayward, did the job for us. “They got a couple of hits and drove in some runs, which was handy.” Werribee’s pitching was solid throughout the game. Wes De Jong produced a marathon 110-pitch effort. De Jong’s extended time on the mound came about through a hamstring injury to Trent Pantalleresco. Josh Lee was superb in his closing role, pitching the final three innings. Lee was scheduled to start Thursday night’s second game against Mulgrave, but that might need to be postponed. “He came on and closed down the game,” Curnow said. “He was going to start Thursday night, but he threw a few too many down, so we’ll have to see
Tigers ready for challenge By Lance Jenkinson Werribee has been set a tough challenge by Box Hill in its first game back at Chirnside Park in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association since resurfacing works. The Tigers will require 205 for victory on a pitch that will be a grind for their batsmen in what promises to be a thrilling run chase. Tigers captain-coach Tim O’Brien said his side needs to be willing to dig in. “It was easy to stay in, it was just hard to score,” he said after assessing the pitch on day one. “As long as we can show energy at the crease and keep looking to score, I back our players 100 per cent to be able to chase them. “It’s going to be a good challenge for us. “If they bowl well, it’s going to be tough to get the score.” While the task of chasing the score down will be difficult, O’Brien said it was a chance for Werribee to show what it has got. The Tigers could be faced with such tests in the finals, so this will be a great opportunity for a full dress rehearsal. “It’s a 50-50 ball game, but if we’re going to be there at the pointy end of the season, we need to be able to chase down this score,” O’Brien said. “Back end of the year, it’s a good preparation for finals if we can chase it down. “If not, we’ve got more things to work on. “I’m looking forward to our run chase next week.” Box Hill survived the full 80 overs to finish on 9-204. The Tigers bowlers stuck to their task, but O’Brien said wickets were hard to come by on the new pitch. “It was the kind of wicket that was hard to score on and tough to get wickets,” he said. “I don’t think we’ve fielded 80 overs for a very long time. “A few of the boys were pretty buggered at the end of today.” Pace off the ball seemed to work for Werribee. The leading wicket takers were spinners Adam Alifraco (4-26) and Michael Kelly (2-72). O’Brien chimed in with 1-28 with his spin. “We bowled 52 overs of spin today, so that indicates a pretty slow and dead wicket,” he said. “The quicks couldn’t get much out of it.” Alifraco was undoubtedly the stand-out with the ball for Werribee. “He just puts the ball on the spot and puts pressure on the batters,” O’Brien said. “He waits for the batsmen to make a mistake and that happened a couple of times today.” Werribee fast bowler James Freeman appeals to the umpire. Acing the test against the ABL’s best Melbourne Aces are playoffs bound after winning three out of four matches against Adelaide Giants in their final home series of the regular season in the Australian Baseball League. The Aces have firmed for one of the prime top three positions in the playoffs that would see them avoid a sudden death wildcard game. The Jon Deeble-managed Aces hold the equal second-best record in the league along with the Perth Heat, but those two sides will duke it out in a four-game series at Perth’s Harley-Davidson Ballpark starting on Thursday night to determine which one goes straight through to the semi finals and which one is wildcard bound. Melbourne Aces will take strong form into the series in Perth, having got the better of an Adelaide team with the best record in the league. In the series opener on Thursday night, the Aces created separation with a three-run seventh innings en route to a 5-2 win. Middle relief pitcher Scott Mitchinson picked up the win for the Aces. Shane Robinson and Jared Cruz had two-hit games for the Aces. In game two on Friday night, Melbourne Aces led all the way for a 7-5 win. The consistent Aces scored runs in six innings with Colin Willis leading the way with three hits and DJ Burt producing two. Starting pitcher Darin Downs claimed the win for the Aces. In game three on Saturday, Melbourne Aces went down for the first time in the series, losing 8-6. The Aces had a never-say-die attitude, putting up four runs in an entertaining ninth inning, but the deficit was too great to bridge. Robinson was the stand out at-bat for the Aces with two hits, while pitcher Cameron Gibbens took the loss. The final game of the series on Sunday was also a special one for the Melbourne Aces. They held their BlazeAid game to raise money for victims of the devastating bushfires. The week’s break did wonders for Western United. United had a collective pep in its step when it returned to the field for Sunday’s 3-0 win over Central Coast Mariners in the A-League at GMHBA Stadium. The spark that had been missing in recent games was recaptured as United banged in three goals in a 21-minute blitz to start the game to put the result beyond doubt. United coach Mark Rudan said the opportunity for his team to exhale, refresh, reflect and project over the bye round was invaluable. “It was good to reflect and speak about where we want to go in the second half of the season,� Rudan said. “The atmosphere and the culture around the place, the vibe around the place, the last week and a half, the last 10 days, has been absolutely superb. “The boys are coming in with a smile on their face. “They want to have a really big crack at this in the second half of the season. “You can see that through their performance.� Western United produced one of its best halves of the season in the opening 45. Sports shorts Cycling Hot on the heels of raising $1800 for the bushfire appeal at the last race meeting, the Footscray Cycling Club riders ventured to Altona for the 24th round of the criterium season. A-grade riders maintained a high average of 45k/ph with each and every breakaway chased down by a keen-as-mustard peloton. In a bunch sprint finish, 18-year-old Subaru-Giant rider Graeme Frislie took the spoils from Pat Drapac and Dan Purcell. The other winners were Nick Owen (B grade), Peter Burke (C grade), Imola Giusti (C-women), William Haines (D-men) and Keely Bennett (D-women).
By Lance Jenkinson Hoppers Crossing has a gilt-edged opportunity to break away from the conglomerate of teams in the middle tier on the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association ladder. The Subbies east-west group has been divided in three levels so far this season: four teams forming a breakaway at the top, five teams striving for positions five and six in the top-six and four teams that seem off the pace. The Cats are one of the teams in that middle bracket between fifth and 10th on the ladder, separated by just six points. They are in the box seat against Croydon at Hogans Road Reserve, requiring just 98 runs for victory with nine wickets in hand. “We need to win as many as we can to stay in that finals race,” Cats captain Justin Goegan said. “From fifth to about 10th is within a game of each other. “It’s very close.” Hoppers Crossing is well on top of Croydon in a game it went into as warm favourites. The Cats bowlers did the job, routing Croydon for just 141. New ball operators Brett Smith (2-14) and Khush Talati (3-49) returned strong figures. However, Smith had a premature finish to the game, due to cramping. “There was a patch there where a few of their guys looked a bit shy of the short ball, so I said I don’t care how much we leak here, we’re in a good position, so bowl quick and fast and we’ll get them trying to hook or pull.” Just as crucial for Hoppers Crossing was negotiating the final 14 overs of the day without too many wickets dismissed. The Cats finished in a strong position on 1-44 with Cameron Nicol (26no) and Chris Henry (8no) still at the crease.

The Centurions were bowled out for 143 in 39.2 overs, falling victim to a hat-trick from Laverton’s Mark Logan, who took the final three wickets. MG takes on SUV big hitters By Alistair Kennedy, Marque Motoring

The Chinese-owned MG carmaker has taken another important step in its bid to make an impact on the Australian car market by opening its first flagship metro dealership, Sydney City MG. Located at Mascot and surrounded by many of the automotive big hitters, the venue was used to unveil its new mid-sized HS SUV as the replacement for its ageing and underachieving GS model. MG HS is bigger all round than its predecessor and, more importantly comes with a raft of safety, driver assistance, technology and entertainment features that combine to make it the most refined MG to date. Two variants are offered, both with the same 1.5-litre 124 kW / 250 Nm turbo-petrol engine, seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. The entry-level Vibe has a driveaway price of $30,990 while the higher-spec will sell for $33,990, or just $1000 more than the listed prices of $29,990 and $32,990 respectively. The styling highlights come at the front of the car with a large honeycomb grille with chrome finish and the iconic ‘MG’ badge front and centre. The grille then flows into wide, narrow headlamps with daytime running lights above extended lower air vents, also honeycombed. Entry into both front and rear seats doesn’t require much effort and there’s plenty of headroom in both areas. Boot space is an impressive 463 litres with the rear seats in place and expands to 1287 litres with the seatbacks folded. The advanced safety and driver assistance features in the HS are packaged together with the clever name of MG Pilot. They include autonomous emergency braking; adaptive

cruise control; lane keep assist; intelligent speed limit assist; intelligent headlight control; traffic jam assist; rear cross traffic alert; and blind spot detection. Â Also standard are six airbags; enhanced ABS
brakes; active yaw control; hydraulic brake booster, brake disc wiping, hill hold; reversing camera; IsoFix child seat anchors; and rear parking sensors. No ANCAP rating has been announced as
yet but given that the outgoing GS received five stars it’s likely that HS will match that score. Infotainment features are displayed on a 10.1-inch touchscreen with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto available. There are four USB inputs, two at the bottom of the front console and two at the rear. Paying the extra three grand and stepping up to the Excite model provides satellite navigation; LED headlights; 18-inch alloy wheels (17-inch in the Vibe); dual-zone climate control; rain-sensing wipers; powered tailgate; welcome lights; and a Super Sport mode that adjusts transmission, throttle and steering for enhanced driving performance. The MG HS launch was conducted entirely within the dealership and we’ll need to wait until the new year to take one out onto the road. Taking on such established and similarly-sized rivals as Mazda CX-5, Nissan X-Trail and RAV4 will be a huge challenge for the new MG SUV but the combination of very competitive pricing and a comprehensive safety and tech inventory makes it worth considering. Then of course there’s one of the most recognisable badges in automotive history – that alone will no doubt attract some buyers. MG’s policy regarding warranty is to match the best available in the country that they’re being sold in which, thanks to Kia, equates to seven years and unlimited distance in Australia. MG also provides seven years of roadside assistance.
