Werribee’s Charlie Hudson-Czerniecki is shooting for the top. The 20 year-old is this week participating in the commonwealth and national championships at the Newcastle Lake Macquarie Clay Target Club. Ms Hudson-Czerniecki is one of 12 female trap shooting athletes competing at the event in a bid to be selected for the Australian team heading to this year’s Tokyo Olympics. Two other women who train and compete at the Werribee Victorian Clay Target Club, Georgia Pistone and Alexis Preston, are also contesting the Olympic trials. Ms Hudson-Czerniecki said this year would be her fourth national championship, after placing third last year. “I feel like I’m taking it as just a normal competition, that’s what you have got to do to keep your mind on the job,” she said. “I would love to go to the Olympics, that has been my goal since I was little.” Ms Hudson-Czerniecki said she would like to thank her family, including grandparents Christine and Jim Hudson, mother Annalise and younger sister Peri, for their support. The number of crimes recorded in Wyndham during a 12-month period has risen by more than 14 per cent, with the amount of aggravated robberies and aggravated burglaries increasing substantially. Data from the state’s Crime Statistics Agency, released last month, shows that between September 2018 and September last year, there was 16,201 offences reported to Wyndham police (compared to 14,119 offences during the previous 12 months). There were 181 aggravated robberies in
Wyndham (compared to 129 previously) and 24 non-aggravated robberies (22 previously). There were also 103 residential aggravated burglaries in Wyndham (82 previously), 787 non-aggravated residential burglaries (797 previously) and 317 non-aggravated burglaries at non-residential premises (370 previously). Police recorded 1023 “steal from a retail store” offences (746 previously); 1384 thefts from motor vehicles (1404 previously); 516 motor vehicle thefts (487 previously) and 1147 criminal damage incidents (981 previously). The amount of sexual assaults reported in Wyndham increased too, with 394 offences

(366 previously). In the area of family violence, there were 330 assaults (275 previously) and 562 common assaults (493 previously). Generally, people are charged with common assault if they physically attack another person without causing injury. Outside of family violence, Wyndham recorded 222 other serious assaults (180 previously) and 246 other common assaults (241 previously). Of note, 59 assaults were committed against police and other emergency service workers (52 previously). The Opposition’s shadow Attorney-General,
Edward O’Donohue, said that across Victoria, the worst offending age bracket was 15-19 year olds, who committed 7333 alleged incidents between September 2018 and September last year – the largest number of crimes against the person by an age group ever recorded. “Worse than these headline statistics are the increases in robbery, drug dealing and drug trafficking; crimes that cause so much harm in the community,” Mr O’Donohue said. “Despite all of Daniel Andrews’ promises and his supposed tough on crime rhetoric, Victorians are more likely to be victims of crime now than they were a year ago.”

Plans passed for Masters site By Alesha Capone A $341 million development proposed for the former Masters site in Williams Landing has been approved by Wyndham council. The planning permit for the 3.1 hectare site at 2 Overton Road includes 47,075 square metres of office space, 3433 square metres of retail, a 1138 square metre supermarket, a medical centre and library. The proposal also includes 435 residential dwellings, in the form of 160 one-bedroom apartments, 233 two-bedroom apartments and 42 three-bedroom apartments.
As well, the project – which will be built in five stages – features a 180-bed hotel; a function centre capable of holding up to 200 patrons; a TAFE for up to 200 students and a childcare centre with 115 places. The highest point of the development will vary between 15 to 18 storeys, and the master plan includes a central hub at ground floor with alfresco dining and recreation spaces. The planning permit proposes to build 1728 car spaces, although 2265 car spaces is the maximum statutory number of parking spots required for the development under state and municipal planning provisions.
The planning permit also includes 845 bicycle spaces, with 85 on-street bike spaces and 760 secure bicycle spaces. All councillors present at last month’s meeting, where the planning permit was considered, voted in favour of the Williams Landing development, except for Cr Tony Hooper. Cr Hooper said he was concerned about the “adverse impact” which the development could have on local amenity and nearby residential areas. He also said there was “insufficient” public transport located near the development
to justify the reduction in car parking requirements. However, a council report into the matter said the site was “well serviced by public transport and alternative transport modes”. “The mixed-use nature of the site means many of the retail uses proposed will be supported by local workers and residents on this site who will not generate additional parking demand,” the report said. Other councillors spoke in support of the planning permit. Cr Kim McAliney described the plan as “exactly the type of development we should be encouraging”.

During her two years at the Werribee Gymnastics Club, Mrs Stark has helped to establish a variety of inclusive classes. This includes classes for children with autism, run in partnership with the Sporting Network of Autistic People and Parents (SNAPP), and
classes for people aged over 55. These classes, which are funded through the Australian Multicultural Community Services and provided free-of-charge to participants, feature gentle exercises in a gymnastics setting. In addition, Mrs Stark co-ordinates the club’s KinderGym and PlayGym sessions for children from around 18 months to five years old. “We just want them to enjoy movement, that’s my focus, not creating gymnastics stars,” she said. The Point Cook Skate Park in Boardwalk Park will receive a $400,000 upgrade to install new features suitable for beginner and intermediate riders. Wyndham council announced the funding last year. Wyndham’s sports development portfolio holder, Cr Peter Maynard, said the new features would include mini-ramps, seats and pathways. The park’s existing skate bow, which is suitable for more experienced skaters, will be retained. The council developed the skate park upgrade project as a result of community feedback, with ideas submitted by Point Cook residents helping to shape the design of the new facilities. During the community consultation period, the council we found that the majority of people who will use the skate park are children, with 86 per cent being aged 12 years old and younger, and that 58 per cent would describe themselves as beginner-to-intermediate skaters and riders. “The new features will allow beginner and intermediate skaters to build up their confidence and skills gradually before tackling the concave dip,” Cr Maynard said. “With 34 per cent of Point Cook’s population aged 19 and younger, council is proud to invest in sporting facilities to ensure young people stay fit and have fun.” Construction is now underway and will be completed by March, with the skate park being closed during this time. Wyndham fireys lend a hand By Alesha Capone Brave firefighters from across Wyndham have been donating their time to help bushfire-affected communities in the state’s east. Members of several local fire brigades attended – and are still attending– the bushfires which have devastated areas including East Gippsland, where hundreds of homes have been lost. Hoppers Crossing Fire Brigade captain Paul Dimartino said he was among volunteers from the brigade who formed part of Strike Team 1428, which travelled to Orbost on December 28.

Mr Dimartino said that on the evening of December 30, a particularly “bad weather day�, the strike team was the only one looking after the town, putting out fires started by “ember attacks� so they did not spread further. “We basically worked 18-19 hours straight protecting the town, the roads were cut off due the fires and trees falling,� Mr Dimartino said. “We saw stuff you couldn’t imagine, like in the middle of the day, the sky turns orange for many hours and all of a sudden it goes dark.� On cooler days, the volunteers helped to escort buses of people in and out of fire-ravaged towns, and also vehicles carrying supplies of petrol and food. “Sometimes it wasn’t about fighting fires, sometimes it was about having a presence there to let people know we were there to help and

Food link for bushfire relief By Benjamin Millar Western suburbs residents have been digging deep to help out their country counterparts facing devastating losses in the bushfire crisis crippling communities around Australia. Wyndham residents have joined those from across Melbourne’s west in supporting a range of bushfire relief measures, including the provision of urgent food and supplies. Much of the relief has been trucked and shipped to fire devastated communities from Bairnsdale to Mallacoota by Foodbank
Victoria, which has been playing a crucial role in the emergency response to the unprecedented bushfire crisis that has left at least 27 people dead and destroyed more than 2000 homes around the country. Foodbank’s Yarraville warehouse has been a key link for ensuring donations from the public keen to assist with essential supplies are rapidly reaching stricken areas. Items in high demand have included bottled water, UHT milk, tinned food, cereals and other pantry staples, as well as pet food. Emergency food relief and water has been
sent to East Gippsland since January 1, when the first truck left for Bairnsdale with supplies to help firefighters and local communities caught up in the bushfires. With roads into the area still cut off, Foodbank Victoria also began shipping food relief to Mallacoota by sea on January 3. The first load included 650 hampers, pallets of water and muesli bars. Almost 1000 cars came through the warehouse to drop off crucial items on January 4, with six military trucks loading up 50 pallets of water and eight pallets of food hampers for
East Gippsland. US pop star Lizzo joined the volunteers last Tuesday, making a surprise visit to lend a hand in the midst of her first Australian tour. “Thank you so much for volunteering your time and your energy and your hearts,” she told volunteers.” A Foodbank spokesperson said more than 400 volunteers had helped sort and pack more than 3000 food hampers for bushfire affected communities by last Friday. Wyndham unites Generous businesses and groups across Wyndham have come together to raise funds for survivors of the bushfire crisis. Among them is Back on Track Fitness Hoppers Crossing, which will host Burpees For The Bush Fires on Saturday at 9am. Gym owners, Brett Duff y and Loren Lauder, said participants would complete a burpee for every dollar donated to the appeal. They are hoping to raise $30,000, and have already hit $29,075, including through online donations. Several other gyms have also joined in the efforts and will be hosting their own Burpees For The Bush Fires events, including a gym in Maryland, USA. At a separate burpees’ event, which will be held on Saturday 9am, Back on Track Fitness in Hoppers Crossing will raise funds for The Salvation Army Disaster Relief Fund. The gym’s fundraising efforts, titled Wyndham Community Bushfire Appeal, have
so far raised more than $47,000. In addition, the Werribee Business & Tourism Association, Tonia T Boutique and The Park Hotel will host a Bushfire BINGO event on Thursday this week. Tonia Tribe, from Tonia T Boutique, said that mostly Watton Street businesses, and also Werribee Mansion, had donated to the event. Last week, The Hoppers Club hosted a family event and major raffle for bushfire affectedcommunities, to which 70 prizes were donated. The night raised more than $10,000, which prompted club chairman Ron Eggleton to say: “To see so many locals together for a single cause does restore faith in the community.” The Ford Muscle Car Club Melbourne also held a car display and vehicle battery collection in partnership with Autobarn Hoppers Crossing, raising more than $1300. A 25-year-old Werribee man and a 29-year-old Werribee woman are among nine people charged in relation to a non-fatal shooting in Bulleen in August, 2019. They were charged after police executed a series of warrants on January 3. The man has been charged with trafficking drug of dependence, possessing cocaine and cannabis, handling stolen goods and committing an indictable offence whilst on bail. The woman has been charged with trafficking cocaine.

A program trialling the installation of planter boxes on Wyndham nature strips is about more than growing plants – just ask Adam Beames and Miwako Okumura. Ms Okumura, who lives in Point Cook and is the founder of Eat My Garden – which is part of the SHARE Community Group – submitted a proposal on the planter box program to Wyndham council about two years ago. The council is now running a trial of the initiative, involving about 40 households. Mr Beames has also been instrumental in setting up the program and has one of the boxes located on his nature strip in Hoppers Crossing. He said other residents would often ask him about the planter box.
“It’s a good place to talk to your neighbours, meet people and potter around,� Mr Beames said. “We can share the harvest and it’s a great way to connect people.� Ms Okumura, who studied ecology at a Japanese university, echoed Mr Beames’ sentiment. “At the beginning of the trial program, we did workshops for the project on how to use herbs, vegies, some kinds of cooking and making a garden bed,� she said. “It’s not just growing plants, it’s providing the opportunity to neighbourhoods to connect people, we want people to have real connections.� Details: parksfeedback@wyndham.vic.gov.au

Australia Day fireworks cancelled Wyndham council will replace this month’s Australia Day fireworks with a laser light show, as a sign of respect to communities impacted by bushfires. bravely battling the blazes,” Cr Gilligan said. “Another factor taken into consideration was the fact that when delivering a fireworks display, we request that CFA representatives are onsite to ensure safety at all times. “By replacing fireworks with a laser light
show, we are ensuring that local CFA resources aren’t tied up on standby on the night.” Cr Gilligan said the “spectacular“ laser light show would take place on the Australia Day event’s main stage, lighting up Watton Street in “a truly impressive experience”. “We also have a huge program of free entertainment and activities planned for the event including live music, movie and market stalls,” he said. Cr Gilligan said the council was in contact with councils in bushfire-affected areas across the state to see how Wyndham
could support them now and into the future. “Wyndham City will continue to work with the Municipal Association of Victoria and Local Government Victoria to offer practical, on-the-ground support to affected regions, with the offer of resources, plant and equipment as needed,” he said. Park to pop up again The popular Point Cook Pop Up Park is set to return this year. The pop up park will run for eight weeks between February 4 and March 29. Now into its third year, the park will include movie nights and live music. Last year’s pop up park attracted more than 90,000 visitors and hosted more than 270 free events and activities, supported by Wyndham council, Stockland, local groups and businesses. Co-leads of the park project, Susan McIntyre and Sara Mitchell, said they believed community-led placemaking created a unique experience of bringing locals together to collaborate, share ideas and make things happen. The two women said that in addition to giving people a place to meet and get to know one another, the park would help to support the local economy. In February, the park will act as a chill-out
zone for the Point Cook Lunar New Year Festival. In March, the park will host its colourful signature Bolly Holi event. The park will be situated in the restaurant precinct of the Stockland Point Cook Town Centre in Murnong Street. Abseiling for awareness By Alesha Capone Abseiling 27 floors from the top of a skyscraper is a daunting task, but Jesse Simpson is prepared for the challenge. The 20 year-old is an ambassador for Altitude Shift 2020, an annual fundraiser for Anglicare Victoria. The event, to be held on April 17 and 18, also aims to raises awareness of the work Anglicare does with foster children. Mr Simpson, who lives in Little River with his long-time foster parents Gen and John,
said he felt a “little nervous” at the prospect of abseiling 113 metres down the St James Building in Melbourne for Altitude Shift. But Mr Simpson, who has previously participated in skydiving and rock climbing, said he wanted to help out Anglicare Victoria, as the organisation had supported him from the moment he entered foster care. “For me, foster care always meant so much more than just having a roof over my head and food on my plate,” he said. “Foster care has really allowed me to be myself, to forget about my past and to achieve
everything that I am capable of. “I graduated high school in 2017 and I am now studying a bachelor of biomedicine at Melbourne University, a course I have dreamt of since I was 15.” There is no fitness level or experience required to take part in the abseil event and participants will receive full training and support. “I think abseiling down a skyscraper is an incredibly visible way to highlight the challenges foster kids face on a daily basis,” Mr Simpson said. It may be hot, but the green at Werribee’s Chirnside Park won’t go thirsty this summer. A new irrigation system has been installed at the oval and the playing surface has been replaced with a natural grass that requires less water to stay green. Wyndham council environment and sustainability portfolio holder, Cr Heather Marcus, said the upgrades were part of a major sustainability investment. “Council has invested a total of $2.4 million to replace the playing surfaces of ovals at Chirnside and Galvin parks, with the latter to be finished by March,” Cr Marcus said. “With summer and hot days upon us, the benefits of the Chirnside Park oval redevelopment will be experienced immediately. “The oval will be able to stay green and healthy with minimal water, making it much more sustainable.” Sports development portfolio holder, Cr Peter Maynard, said the council was proud to enhance the playing surface of one of its premier football and cricket ovals. “This new, sustainable playing surface will ensure the oval continues to host many top-class sporting and community events for years to come,” he said. “We’d like to thank the Werribee Cricket Club for their patience as we undertook these important works and I can’t wait to see them hit a six on the redeveloped ground this summer.” Tate Papworth

Avalon to Bali . . . from the Mayor
By Luke Voogt Fights to Bali are set to take off from Geelong following an announcement by low-cost Indonesian airline Citilink and Avalon Airport last Friday. “Bali is our most requested international destination and one that we have been actively pursuing for some time,� Avalon Airport chief executive Justin Giddings said. “We’re excited to be able to make one of Australia’s most beloved holiday destinations a more affordable and easier experience for people wanting a great escape.� Citilink is a subsidiary of parent company Garuda Indonesia Airlines that began in 2001 as a low cost shuttle service between Indonesian cities. The airline began flying between Perth and Bali last November, but this would be their first operation to the eastern Australian states, Mr Giddings explained. “Citilink has been fantastic to work with, and are highly regarded in the industry,� he said. “It’s an honour to introduce this airline to the region, and make Bali more accessible for Melbourne, Geelong and regional Victoria in particular. “We’re certain the flights will be hugely successful.� The first Bali flight from Geelong will take off from Avalon Airport to Denpasar on January 24. An Airbus A320NEO, carrying 178 passengers and cargo will depart Avalon daily at 12.50pm local time, with the return flight landing at Avalon at 8.50am. Nurtjahjo said he was thrilled to launch the new route. “Citilink has become the first airline serving the Denpasar and Avalon Airport route and we hope this will provide more options for people who want to visit Denpasar and vice versa.� Given Australia had the second highest number of visits to Indonesia of any country in 2019, Citilink was optimistic the service would reach patronage targets, Mr Nurtjahjo said. Future plan for coast By Alesha Capone Wyndham council has released a draft plan designed to guide future planning for the municipality’s coastal areas. Wyndham’s environment and sustainability portfolio holder, Cr Heather Marcus, said the document focused on four key themes, including protecting the coastal area. “Firstly, it’s about protecting what is unique – ensuring protection and recognition of the coast’s unique habitat, agricultural, historic, marine sanctuary, indigenous and volcanic landscape values,” she said. Cr Marcus said the draft plan was also focused on “good planning” for sustainable future land use and development. She said it aimed to respond to adverse environmental impacts and improve connectivity. The draft plan proposes creating “a key connection along the Werribee River from Werribee central to Werribee South and the coastline”, dubbed the Wyndham Bay Trail. Creating a shared pathway for pedestrians and cyclists would attract “a new range of users to the area”, the draft plan stated. The document includes a “conceptual design” for the shared path alignment. The proposed route includes a new connection from the Federation and Werribee River trails to the Coastal and Skeleton Creek trails, travelling through or near locations including Beach, Campbells Cove, Aviation, and Point Cook Homestead roads and the Saltwater Coast estate. The document said “careful management of the farming interface” would be required to ensure the bay trail provided “a positive outcome” for both farmers and shared path users.

The draft plan stated that some Wyndham residents, who submitted feedback to help shape the coast management document, had “indicated that many of the locations on the Wyndham Coast were isolated and felt unsafe, especially Campbells Cove and the Point Cook Homestead site”. As a result, the council will

Feedback call for new loos The community has been invited to provide feedback on the design of a new free-standing toilet facility to be constructed within the historic Point Cook Homestead precinct. The proposed facility includes an accessible toilet. It has been designed with durable, low maintenance materials which are easily replaced if damaged and can be pressure-washed in case of graffiti. As part of a $1.5 million investment in the site, other works will be carried out at the precinct, including connecting the toilet facility, homestead and café building to the City West Water sewer main and the removal of the current septic systems. Refurbishment, maintenance and upgrade works across the heritage-listed buildings within the precinct will also occur. Construction is set to start mid-2020, with the work expected to be completed by the end of the year. Parks Victoria’s executive director infrastructure and information technology, Ben Skinner, said the upgrade project “will help facilitate future use of this historic site, enabling the community and visitors to spend time in the site of one of Victoria’s significant homesteads”. Sayers Road closure warning A section of Sayers Road in Tarneit will be closed until the end of February for roadworks. The road will be closed between Derrimut Road and Reflections Boulevard while works are carried out as part of the state government’s $1.8 billion Western Roads Upgrade. Upgrades include the installation of extra lanes in each direction. To upgrade the existing lanes on Sayers Road between Derrimut Road and Reflections Boulevard, two east-bound lanes will be closed until February 29. Workers behind traffic barriers will install also drainage, and build new walking and cycling paths. They will work between 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday, and Saturdays 7am to 1pm. Some works will also take place at night, from Sunday to Friday from 8pm to 5am. The service road access to the Wyndham North police station will change during this time, and it will become a two-way road, while the service road entrance off Sayers Road will close. Electronic signs and detour signs have been installed to warn motorists. Hoppers Crossing teenager Marcus Pisani is steering his way towards becoming a star on the national go-karting scene. The 14-year-old took up go-kart racing about four years ago. “My dad used to race cars and I have always been interested in car racing,� he said. “My dad used to take me to drive rental go-karts and I loved it and from that point on, I begged my parents for my own go-kart.� Marcus said he won “quite a few races� last year. “Junior top guns, junior sprint classic, local club days, I even scored a perfect score in the club driver rankings – my favorite has to be my podium at the Australian Kart Championship at Monarto,� he said. “What I enjoy about go-karting is I’ve met great people, made a few good friends, I’ve travelled around Australia as this year I competed in the Australian Kart Championship. “I enjoy the racing and I’ve learnt a lot in my short time racing. “My dad is my mechanic, so my dad and I have a great bond, he’s like my biggest supporter and my best mate. “There are some great people in karting, people who volunteer their time on weekends so we can race, a great community spirit.� Marcus said he was hoping to become a car racing driver in the future. “I would like to move in to car racing when I’m old enough, it just seems like the next step to take as I really enjoy racing,� he said.

Register your pool and spa Wyndham council is reminding residents to register their pools and spas by June 1. An amendment to state government building regulations requires all residential pools and spas to be registered with councils by this date. Owners must also provide certificates confirming their pools and spas comply with safety regulations. Wyndham’s safer communities portfolio holder Cr Kim McAliney said the amendment changes were aimed at keeping children safe. Cr McAliney said that since 2000, 27 children across the state have drowned in private
swimming pools and spas. “In at least 20 of those cases, the non-compliance of the safety barrier was a contributing factor,” Cr McAliney said. “While it is vital that children are supervised around backyard pools and spas, barriers will prevent children from falling into water and drowning. “The pool gate must be closed whenever someone enters or exits the pool area and nothing can be near the barrier that would allow a child to climb the fence. “Residents must also ensure the gaps in the
fence are not wide enough for a small child to access the pool area.” Cr McAliney said that residents needed to get their pool’s barriers inspected every four years by a building inspector. The council conducts pool safety barrier inspections every week and often adds new pools to its database. Wyndham council has already counted 5000 pools in the municipality, with the number expected to increase under the amendment change. Details: vba.vic.gov.au/swimming-pools
Wyndham’s popularity with first-home buyers has been boosted under the state government’s stamp duty concession program. Under the program, first-home buyers in Victoria do not have to pay stamp duty on properties which cost below $600,000, and get stamp duty discounts on houses which sell for up to $750,000. From January to November this year, first-home buyers saved more than $576 million in stamp duty across the state. The 3064 postcode (Craigieburn, Donnybrook, Roxburgh Park, Kalkallo, Mickleham) topped the state for the number of first-home buyers who claimed the stamp duty exemption, with 2607 buyers saving $38.1 million. The 3029 postcode (Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit, Truganina) placed second on the list, with 2112 first-home buyers who saved $32.2 million. The 3030 postcode (Point Cook, Quandong, Werribee, Werribee South) placed fourth, with 1716 buyers who saved $26.1 million. The 3024 postcode (Manor Lakes, Mambourin, Wyndham Vale, Mount Cottrell, Fieldstone) also featured in the top 10 for the state, with 859 buyers who saved $11.8 million. Victorian first home buyers have saved a total of $1.72 billion since the Homes for Victorians initiative was introduced by the state government in July 2017. Alesha Capone

The largest heavy horse event in the nation will be held at the National Equestrian Centre in Werribee Park on the weekend. The Commonwealth Clydesdale Horse Society Australia (CCHS) will host the annual National Clydesdale & Heavy Horse Festival on Saturday and Sunday, between 8.30am to 4.30pm each day. This year will mark the 13th year that the festival is held at Werribee Park. Wyndham council is a major sponsor of the event. CCHS president Robert Ronzio said that the festival would feature horse breeds such as Clydesdales, Shire Horses, Pecherons, Gypsy Cobs, Fjords and Highland Ponies.

Animal cruelty reports rise By Alesha Capone The number of animal cruelty reports in Wyndham increased by a quarter during the last financial year compared to the previous 12 months, according to RSPCA Victoria. The animal welfare agency has revealed that it received a total of 11,638 animal cruelty reports – averaging 31 per day – during the 2018-19 financial year. During the timeframe, Wyndham recorded 364 cruelty reports (compared to 294 reports in the 2017-18 financial year). This placed Wyndham at seventh-highest for animal cruelty reports, out of all Victoria’s municipalities. Greater Geelong topped the list, with 617 cruelty reports (compared to 584 previously). RSPCA Victoria chief executive Dr Liz Walker said that across the state, concerns about neglect made up the highest proportion of cruelty reports, indicating many animals were not receiving the most basic standard of care, such as sufficient food, water and shelter. “Neglect is a form of cruelty, and it is heartbreaking to know so many animals continue to suffer across our state due to lack of basic care,” Dr Walker said. “The 2018-19 animal cruelty report statistics clearly illustrate the need for further education and for people to seek help if they are having trouble providing basic care for their animals. “Looking at these figures, it’s easy to feel disheartened. However, it’s affirming that each individual report made to our Inspectorate represents a person who has acted on their concern for an animal. “The individuals who make these reports give voice to vulnerable animals who can’t speak for themselves.” See https://www.rspcavic.org/ services/inspectorate/report-cruelty

Rhinos look to future The Wyndham City Rhinos Rugby Club is looking forward to an exciting year ahead, with the introduction of two youth girl’s sides and other new initiatives. The club is based at Mossfiel Reserve in Hoppers Crossing. Senior men’s team head coach Lucian Lauofo said the club already had “some very skilful girls playing alongside the boys in our junior teams”, so the call was made to introduce youth girls teams in the under-15s and under-17s age groups. “Giving young girls an opportunity to get fit and healthy, be in a fun team environment and learn the game of rugby is great,” he said. “With the growth of female participation, there are genuine pathways for girls to play at a higher level.”
Mr Lauofo said the club would also re-introduce senior rugby this year, for the first time since 2015, so that its junior players could continue into the future. “So many players cross the Westgate Bridge to play rugby and if we can give them a positive and enjoyable place to play the game, I think the club’s growth can be huge,” Mr Lauofo said. Seaworks’ new skills hub By Benjamin Millar Steam into 2020 with one of the west’s most innovative new creative spaces, The Creative Technology Hub at Seaworks Maritime Precinct in Williamstown. The new makerspace features cutting edge creative technology including a 3D printer, laser cutter, green screen and virtual reality, available for visitors and workshop participants to enjoy a taster of the tools that could lead to new educational and employment opportunities. Programs and activities at the hub focus on STEAM learning, with the aim of sparking interest in the vital fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. The hub has been created via a partnership between Seaworks and Hobsons Bay council, drawing on a grant funded by Gandel Philanthropy, the state government’s Living Libraries Infrastructure Program Fund, and additional sponsorship. It is situated in the main shed at Seaworks with access off Nelson Place, further opening up the Williamstown maritime precinct for visitors. Concern over kids in cars Alarming new statistics have revealed a number of children had to be freed from locked cars across Wyndham in 2019. The RACV data revealed the top suburbs for calls about children in locked vehicles, with Hoppers Crossing (13), Tarneit (9) and Point Cook (8) listed among the top 10. The statistics were released as part of RACV’s Check Keys – Check Kids campaign, designed to prevent parents and carers from accidentally locking children in hot cars. RACV public policy general manager Bryce Prosser urged motorists to be vigilant, with temperatures predicted to nudge record highs across summer. “RACV tests show that car interiors can reach more than 70 degrees in just minutes when the outside temperature is only 30 degrees. Especially around this time of year, it’s easy to become distracted and forget where our car keys are,” he said. “A momentary lapse in concentration combined with sophisticated vehicle locking technology and soaring summer temperatures is a recipe for disaster. “Research shows that younger children are more sensitive to heat than older children and adults, as their body temperatures rise five times faster. On Target for award The Target headquarters in Williams Landing has been shortlisted for a prestigious property award. The eight-storey building, developed by Cedar Woods, has been named one of 12 finalists for the Best Office Development category in the Property Council of Australia’s national awards. The national winners of the awards will be announced in May. The 12,960 square metre Target building in Williams Landing was constructed by the Hacer Group, and completed in November 2018. During December 2018, Cedar sold the Target building to Centuria Property Funds Limited for $58 million. The building, which is located adjacent to
Williams Landing train station, accommodates hundreds of Target employees and incorporates a café on the ground floor. Freeway speedsters snapped By Alesha Capone More than 50,000 speeding motorists have been caught out by four traffic camera sites located on the Princes Freeway, during a 12 month period. According to figures released by the state government, during the 2018-19 financial year the four Princes Freeway camera sites ranked among Victoria’s top 10 for snapping law-breaking drivers, issuing a total of 51,146 fines. The four camera sites regularly feature
among the state’s highest-earning traffic cameras – within the 2017-18 financial year, they issued a total of 68,261 infringements. During the 2018-19 financial year, the cameras covering the Melbourne-bound lanes of the Princes Freeway at Avalon Bridge in Lara issued 17,075 infringements (compared to 19,996 within the previous 12 months). The cameras covering the Melbourne-bound lanes of the freeway at the Point Wilson Bridge in Little River issued 11,684 infringements (compared to 10,522 previously). The Geelong-bound camera site covering
four lanes at the Forsyth Road Bridge in Point Cook issued 11,328 infringements (23,067 previously). The Melbourne-bound camera site of the bridge in Hoppers Crossing, which also covers four lanes, issued 11,059 fines (14,676 previously). The camera site which issued the most infringements in Victoria during the 2018-19 financial year was the intersection of King Street and La Trobe Street in West Melbourne, which issued 38,705 infringements. The Department of Justice and Community
Safety has called for motorists to submit feedback about their experiences with the state’s fines system to a review being conducted by the Fines Reform Advisory Board. The review will consider how the Victorian fines system is working, since reforms introduced by the Fines Reform Act 2014 were introduced at the start of last year. The advisory board’s report will be submitted to the Attorney-General in March. Submissions to the review will close on February 3, see www.engage.vic.gov.au/ fines-reform for details.
Space for youth opens A $720,000 outdoor arts facility for youth has opened next to Saltwater Community Centre in Point Cook. Named the Saltwater Youth Space, the area features a landscaped lawn, performance space, art canvasses for painting, a film projector and areas for young people to skate and relax. The project was funded by Wyndham council, along with a $200,000 grant through the state government’s Growing Suburbs Fund. The facility aims to give young people a safe and welcoming place to gather and engage in creative expression, as well as provide a venue for bands and events. Mayor Josh Gilligan said Wyndham has a youth population of about 37,000 people, which amounts to about 17 per cent of the municipality’s population. He said the council’s youth services provided information, programs, events and assistance for young people, from locations including the
Youth Resources Centre at Hoppers Crossing. “I encourage our young people and their families to discover the breadth of programs and services on offer from our youth services,” Cr Gilligan said. “We have regular programs each term as well as a packed program of things to do during the school holidays.” Cr Gilligan said youth services also offered free counselling for young people, with qualified counsellors and psychologists available for confidential chats. Last year, Jade was presented with an award that recognises outstanding local students and young leaders. She chats with Alesha Capone. How did you feel to receive the Julia Gillard Award?
Are you passionate about taking on leadership roles?
I was surprised, I actually found out about it before my last exam, which was for Legal Studies. The award was presented at a whole-school assembly by Joanne Ryan. It was unexpected, I didn’t really expect to get it.
I think it’s more trying to help those who feel like they don’t have a voice. The ability to make change and combine your ideas with other people, and improve the place that you’re in. What are your plans for this year?
Throughout my schooling years, I’ve been involved in leadership positions. I was the school’s social justice captain last year, and I’ve been in the SRC a couple of times, class captain, and that sort of thing. What does the social justice captain role involve? It’s a pretty wide-ranging role, with a lot of scope. It involves raising awareness of different issues in society, two of the main things we were involved in were R U OK? Day and Harmony Day. We organised parades, put up posters and signs around the school, and make sure people know where to get help for mental health, if they need it. I feel like for some people, they still feel like there is a stigma about seeking help, so opening doors and helping them to realise if’s not that big of a deal is important.
I’m working part-time and I also got into my first-preference university course. I’m going to be studying Law and Arts at Deakin, it’s a five-year course. What career are you hoping to follow? Hopefully a lawyer, either criminal, or I’m really interested in constitutional and statutory law, that sort of thing. I would like to major in politics and international politics, or criminology. What do you like most about Hoppers Crossing?

Most of my life, I have been here. My family is here and my friends are here, I went to primary school and high school here – well, secondary school very close by – and every time I leave home I see people that I know and everyone is very friendly.

UPDATE ON THE WEST GATE TUNNEL PROJECT The West Gate Tunnel Project is using the summer months on Melbourne’s roads to carry out important works to build extra lanes on the West Gate Freeway. Work is underway rebuilding two key ramps over the West Gate Freeway, to make room for widening the freeway from 8 to 12 through lanes. This work includes rebuilding ramps that go over the West Gate Freeway at the M80 Ring Road interchange and replacing the piers with a frame structure to allow space for the extra lanes underneath. In addition, entry and exit ramps will be upgraded at Millers Road, as well as placing more barriers so that we can continue the freeway widening works during 2020. Economic Boost The West Gate Tunnel Project is providing a massive boost to Victoria’s economy, creating thousands of jobs. The project is delivering a $10 billion boost to Victoria’s economy, with about 4000 people already on board and has recently clocked up 11 million working hours.
Detours are in place. During these works, which run to the end of February, you may experience delays on the M80 Ring Road, West Gate Freeway, and Princes Freeway.
All up the project will create 6000 jobs, including over 500 jobs for apprentices, trainees and graduates.
Meanwhile in Footscray, preparations are well underway for the construction of a bridge over the Maribyrnong River. This bridge will connect the West Gate Tunnel to an elevated road above Footscray Road, linking the West Gate Tunnel to the city and CityLink once the tunnel opens. When the tunnel is completed, drivers will have a choice - the tunnel or the bridge. Local residents will also benefit from 9000 trucks a day removed from streets in the inner west, with 24-hour truck bans on six local roads. Chairman of Werribee Shire Council’s planning Committee, Cr. Frank Purcell, has written to Federal Treasurer, Mr. Howard, suggesting that the extra revenue being raised by keeping Australian petrol at world parity should be used to assist development in expanding municipalities such as Werribee. He pointed out, among other things, that Werribee Shire was using about 35% of its general revenue to pay loans.
Three grass fires ripped through the municipality during the state’s only total fire ban day for the summer season, last Wednesday. Werribee firefighters battled fierce winds to control a grass fire which destroyed about 50ha of grassland near the Laverton Lake Reserve at the cnr of Sayers and Old Geelong Rds.

Plant the seeds of good health
It’s a growing thing, gardening. According to Nursery and Gardens Australia, some 1.9 billion plants were sold in 2018 and 32 per cent of those customers were private consumers. Perhaps it’s that we’re more aware of the environment, maybe it’s the rise of online nurseries and ‘plantfluencers’. Either way, Australians love surrounding themselves with plants. And a good thing too, because plants allow us to decorate, camouflage, screen, insulate and sustain the environment, all while keeping ourselves healthy. Decoration and camouflage Plants make any space more attractive, whether indoors or disguising a dreary corner of the yard.
The colours, scents, shapes, patterns and textures energise and simply encourage you to enjoy being in natural surroundings. On a balcony or in an apartment, grouping and staggering a few succulents together with lofty shrubs such as the rubber plant, can make a striking arrangement, says Plant Life Balance’s Jason Chongue. “When clustering plants, make sure to stick to plants that require similar lighting levels,” he says. Privacy and insulation A few large palm fronds or even Ivy threading its way through trellis or up walls can help provide privacy, while a curtain of cascading spider plants and ferns may help filter light and,
through trans-evaporation, even help to naturally cool a space. Other plants may also help absorb excessive noise, like those used in Sydney’s “Breathing Wall” in Mitchell Street Plaza to muffle traffic sounds. Sustenance Trees, grasses and other groundcovers curb carbon dioxide in the atmosphere but plants can also clean and stabilise the environment indoors. Studies from Sydney University of Technology and RMIT show that clustering medium-sized indoor plants, such as peace lilies, together, can absorb pollutants and purify the air by up to 25 per cent whick could prevent and help treat headaches, fuzziness and dementia. Werribee will make it long-awaited return to Chirnside Park this Saturday in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association. The Tigers have spent the first half of the season on the road while ground resurfacing took place at their Watton Street home. While the team kept their enthusiasm levels high, Tigers captain-coach Tim O’Brien admits it will be nice to sample some of their home comforts at Chirnside Park for the first time this season. “We’re really looking forward to playing some cricket there,” O’Brien said. “We had a lot of travel in the first half of the year. “We actually don’t travel at all now.” Werribee will remain in the western suburbs for the remainder of the season. The Tigers three away games will all be played against western rivals.
If they have their own way, the Tigers will also get to host a home final this season, something they were denied last season due to professional JLT Series football being played at the venue. “After Christmas, all of our games are in the west,” O’Brien said. “We play Yarraville at Yarraville, Altona at Altona and Williamstown at Williamstown and then we’ve got the two games at Chirnside against Box Hill and Balwyn. “We did a lot of travelling before Christmas, so I think the boys are pretty happy that we’re not doing too much travel after Christmas. “We’ll be aiming to get in the top three so we can at least host a home final.” Werribee’s first match in the new year against Yarraville at the Yarraville Oval was abandoned after just 16.5 overs. The play had already been delayed due
to spot of water that got under the covers overnight and then a couple of dangerous balls forced the umpires to call a halt to play. “A few balls popped a bit and there was one ball that took off a length and got quicker off the wicket, so the umpires deemed the wicket to be unsafe and called the game off. “Both captains were happy to still play on it, but it was the umpires call and that was the final call. “It was a little bit frustrating. “[Top team] Altona got beaten today so we could’ve got a bit more on them. “Williamstown got a win, so they’ll join us now.” Werribee, sitting second on the ladder, will host a struggling Box Hill in a two-day game at Chirnside Park starting on Saturday. Saints break drought By Lance Jenkinson Seabrook captain Dilip Sarkhell is confident that Saturday’s breakthrough 78-run victory over Sunshine Heights will be a springboard for a more successful second half of the season for his team. The Saints played some good cricket in the lead-up to Christmas in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 3, but remained winless until their one-day demolition of the Heights at Ainsworth Reserve. Sarkhell said that belief never waned in the Saints camp during their nine-game winless streak to start the season, though it build pressure as they became a permanent dweller in the relegation zone. “I told the guys when we were doing the warm up today, we’re a good enough team, you’ve just got to be positive about it and just play positive cricket,” he said. “Positive cricket brought us this result and we’re going to carry this momentum forward. “If play with this intent and positive attitude, I reckon we’ll get more wins.” Sarkhell was ecstatic for his team after Seabrook’s upset win over the finals contending Sunshine Heights. He was heartened by the manner of the win, executing most of what the Saints had planned for pre-game. “I’m so stoked with the win,” he said. “My adrenalin was running so high. “It was a very good day and a great team day.” The only blot on the Seabrook copybook was a top order collapse. The Saints crumbled to 6-77 before Sarkhell (51 not out) and Stephen Morgan (39 not out) produced an unbroken 91-run partnership to lead their side to a competitive 6-168 off 40 overs. “We still had a long time to bat, so it was just about keeping wickets in hand,” Sarkhell said. “We kept talking to each other, saying we’ve just got to stay out here and it’s us two and that’s it, no one else needs to come in. “If we are in, with the batting style that we have, we’d easily make the runs that we need and that’s what happened. “We batted smart, we were getting boundaries every over and that helped. “We kept the run rate ticking.” Seabrook was superb with the ball and in the field. Opening bowler Hitesh Bavarva set the tone, charging in with the new ball to put the Heights batsmen on the back foot, before medium pacer Dhavel Patel became the chief destroyer with four wickets. The Saints knew it would be their day when Peter Fraczek produced a team lifting direct-hit run out from mid on. Seabrook remain on the bottom of the ladder, but will head to West Newport on Saturday with a pep in their step.

All-round team effort for Hoppers Hoppers Crossing has consolidated its spot in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association east-west group top six. The fifth-placed Cats are one of six teams separated by six points between fifth and 10th on the ladder. The Cats had a hard-fought 37-run win over Box Hill in a one-day game away at the Box Hill City Oval on Saturday. Hoppers Crossing made 172 with the runs evenly spread. Jack Rhodes was the Cats top scorer with 34. Chris Henry (20), Sanka Abeyruwan (23) and Justin Goegan (22) made handy contributions. The inner west is about to get its first taste of Western United in the A-League. United has opted to transfer its blockbuster Australia Day clash with Adelaide United to the VU Whitten Oval in Footscray. It will be the first chance for western suburbs supporters to cheer on Western United in a home game without having to travel to Ballarat or Geelong. United defender Andrew Durante has supported the move, which is aimed at capturing the United fans that find it hard to travel to the country towns and capturing new supporters in the suburbs. “I think it could work,” Durante said. “It’s a nice little stadium, I think it holds 11,000. “I think it’s good for the club to be able come to areas like this, a little bit more inner west than Geelong and Ballarat and really broaden our fan base. “There’s quite a lot of fans around this area, so hopefully they turn out in numbers, come out to this game and really support us.”
One of the qualms about Western United playing home games at Geelong’s GMHBA Stadium is its large size. With relatively small crowds for a big stadium, it has put a bit of a dent on the atmosphere generated by the enthusiastic crowd. A recent United home game at Ballarat’s Mars Stadium, which has a similar capacity to the VU Whitten Oval, generated a much better atmosphere. “I think this [Whitten Oval] is a perfect little boutique stadium to generate some noise and atmosphere,” Durante said. “Until our stadium is built [in Tarneit], maybe a bit of this is required, that we do venture around to different areas to maximise our audience.” Durante is adamant the short-term pain of playing in Australian rules football stadiums will be worth it in the long run for Western United players and fans once its new stadium is built at their home in Wyndham. “I think we’re in a unique situation where
once the stadium is built, we’ll have a real strong home base, probably one of the best in stadiums in Australia that’s owned by us,” he said. Before Western United makes its VU Whitten Oval debut, it will face Central Coast Mariners at GMHBA Stadium this Sunday at 4pm. A special day is planned by United with it doubling as a fundraising event for the bushfire appeal. “This day is bigger than football,” United chief executive officer Chris Pehlivanis said. “It’s an event for the entire football community to come together and show we are united in helping those communities in need. “What’s more, our members, fans and the broader community will have the opportunity to show their appreciation for the emergency services and volunteers who have worked tirelessly through the crisis, whilst also paying respects to the tragic loss of life across Australia.” Lance Jenkinson

Aces ready to fire up By Lance Jenkinson Melbourne Aces will head into the Australian Baseball League regular season home straight looking to avoid a sudden death wildcard route through the playoffs. The Aces face two four-game series against teams jostling for those lucrative top-three places that would ensure they avoid a wildcard game. They will enter their blockbuster penultimate round home series with front runners Adelaide Giants on Thursday night at Melbourne Ballpark sitting in equal second in the standings and holding their destiny in their own hands. Import Colin Willis maintained the rage in the batters box for the Aces with hits in every game, including two multi-hit games. Willis lifted his batting average to .405 on the back of his seven-hit series. The Melbourne Aces pitching department was stellar for most of the series. The Aces restricted Geelong-Korea to three runs or less in three of the four games. Darin Downs, Liam O’Sullivan and Lars Liguori were praised for their impact on the mound. Aside from the jostling for prime playoff spots, Melbourne Aces will be doing their bit to help the farming community that is being
devastated by the ongoing bushfires. The fourth game of their home series against Adelaide Giants on Sunday will be a special day where the Aces aim to raise significant funds for BlazeAid. BlazeAid is a volunteer-based organisation that works to help people in rural Australia rebuild fences and other structures damaged in fires or floods. As well as the baseball, F45 Training will run a pre-game work out for fans with all proceeds of the ticket sales donated to BlazeAid. During the baseball, Greyhound Racing Victoria will have a celebrity race, while after the game, Melbourne City Wrestling will put on a live show to entertain the crowd. Aces players have pledged $1000 for every home run hit on the day. “To see all the stuff that’s going on out there with the bushfires, it’s pretty sad obviously,” Hughes said. “It touches so many different lives, so anything we can do, the baseball community will pull together and hopefully raise some good money for those guys and hopefully we’ll put on a good show for everybody.”

Released here in July 2019, Hyundai Venue is the newest, and smallest, member of the Korean carmaker’s growing SUV range. At a smidgeon over four metres in length it’s one of the shortest of all models in the compact SUV market. Three variants are offered: Go, Active and Elite at prices ranging from $19,990 to $25,990 plus on-roads. With the Accent hatchback now dropped Venue becomes the entry-level model in the Hyundai range.

Styling Venue’s chunky body is neat and functional without the fussiness of many of its competitors. The front is dominated by a large vertical grille flanked by small stacked headlights, with the profile featuring wide wheel arches, character lines and side cladding which give it a semi-rugged look, as do standard roof rails. Venue Elite adds further character with two-tone roof and matching mirrors caps. Engine/transmissions All Venue models are powered by the same 1.6-litre petrol engine with maximum outputs of 90 kW and 151 Nm. The two lower-specced models have the option of six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, the Elite is auto-only.

Safety Standard across the Venue range are front, side, thorax and curtain airbags; enhanced ABS brakes; electronic stability program; hill-start assist; IsoFix child seat restraint anchors as well as Hyundai’s SmartSense suite that includes driver attention warning; autonomous emergency braking; lane keeping assist; high beam assist and tyre pressure monitoring The mid-spec Active adds LED daytime running lights and rear parking sensors while the Elite also gets blind spot collision warning and rear cross-traffic collision warning.
Interior The interior has clean lines, well-positioned buttons and controls and a centrally-mounted touchscreen that melds neatly into the dashboard. A flat roofline provides enough space for all but very tall occupants Seats are wide and comfortable and even with the rear seats in use there’s 355 litres of cargo space

Infotainment The infotainment system is based around an 8-inch tablet style touchscreen. Standard in all models are Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, as well as Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity. Venue comes standard with the Hyundai Auto Link system which pairs with a smartphone app to allow remote access to variety of features. These include monitoring the driving habits of different drivers; acceleration / braking tendencies; vehicle health check; emergency assist and service alerts.
Driving Despite its compact dimensions Venue feels like a larger vehicle. Entry is relatively easy and seats are comfortable and supportive. The top outputs of 90kW and 151Nm come in at high rpm levels of 6300 and 4850 respectively so Venue seemed aimed at pleasing keen drivers. Automatic versions have a Sport mode in addition to Eco and Normal settings. Hyundai Venue only weighs between 1140kg and 1225kg depending on the variant so it’s still quite agile around town and cruises comfortably in motorway conditions. Fuel consumption is listed at 7.0 litres per 100 km with the manual gearbox and 7.2 L/100 km from the auto. During our test in the Active auto we averaged 8.1 overall. Summing up We should point out here that we have been testing Venue for a couple of months, and probably will be for the next six years or so – because my wife was so impressed during our initial week-long test that it has now replaced the previous very capable, Suzuki Swift. Venue comes with a five year, unlimited distance warranty. It has fixed price service every 15,000km.

RAM truck conversion success By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring The 5000th RAM truck has rolled off the production line in Melbourne. The Granite Crystal grey 1500 V8 Hemi Laramie is one of the team that has the brilliant catchline of “Eat utes for breakfast”. The very American RAM range is very varied; light duty (1500) and heavy duty (3500 and 2500). They can tow anything from 3.5 tonnes up to 6.9 tonnes. “This is truly an Australian automotive success story,” says Neville Crichton CNZM, Executive Chairman of the Ateco Group and originator of the idea to convert left-hand drive RAM Trucks to right-hand drive at the bespoke Melbourne Manufacturing Facility (MMF). “This year will see RAM sales just shy of 3,000 units in Australia and New Zealand – last year we sold 767 and just 449 in 2017. Most pleasing of all, however, is the boost to the local automotive manufacturing sector, employing over 250 people directly, and many more indirectly via our local supplier agreements.” The RAM Trucks Australia story began in 2013, when the Ateco Group became New Zealand distributor for FCA, which included the RAM Trucks brand. Crichton realised there was an opportunity to demonstrate Australia could manufacture and produce a world-class product despite the closure of other local manufacturing facilities. RAM Trucks decided they were ready to enter the market with the Ateco Group and a worldwide search for an effective remanufacturing partner began. The Walkinshaw Group – with whom Crichton has a long-standing relationship, having raced for Tom Walkinshaw back in the 1980s – were the most competitive and were awarded the contract in 2015.
