Mail, parcels stolen By Esther Lauaki Hundreds of letters potentially including confidential documents, bank details, utility accounts, as well as Christmas gift s were stolen from Tarneit on the eve of the festive period. A depot bin, used to store mail when delivery staff are on rounds, containing nearly a dozen bundles of mail and two bags of parcels were stolen early last week. An Australia Post spokesman told Star Weekly that the matter was reported to the
police immediately. “Th is incident involves a theft at one of our depot bins,” the spokesman said. “Four mail bags containing 11 bundles of mail and two bags of small parcels were stolen. “There is no impact on any other mail.” Victoria Police was unable to confi rm any further details regarding the theft . Star Weekly understands that the lock of the depot bin has been replaced following the incident. Police are investigating the theft , which
they say occurred between November 25 and November 26. Investigators believe the incident is related to the earlier theft of a motorcycle on the corner of Bulban Road and Walls Road in Werribee. Police would like to speak with the driver of a black Ford XR6 sedan that was seen in the vicinity of the incidents. The latest incident follows “a significant increase” in mail theft across Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong in April. In April, Acting Inspector Aaron Riches said thieves were generally targeting mail
that contained people’s drivers licences, utility accounts, credit card transactions and bank statements. “These items are then used by criminals to assume an identity and then defraud victims,” Acting Inspector Riches said. Australia Post customers in the Wyndham area who believe their mail may be affected by the latest mail theft should contact 13POST. Anyone that witnesses suspicious behaviour or has any information on mail theft in the area is urged to contact Werribee police station or Crime Stoppers via 1800 333 000.

Wyndham’s top selling homes By Alesha Capone A four-bedroom Sanctuary Lakes house which sold for $2.43 million has achieved Wyndham’s highest house price so far this year. The property, at 11 Pelican Point Road, was sold during October by Sanctuary Lakes Real Estate director Fadi Saad. Mr Saad said the house, known as “The Elysian”, featured a geometric curved staircase handcrafted in New Zealand, a heated in-ground swimming pool with views of the waterfront and a crystal chandelier.
He said the property had also set a new record for lakeside house sales in the Sanctuary Lakes area, with the previous record being held by a house at 19 Panorama Way, which sold for $2.33 million two years ago. The second-most expensive house in Wyndham this year was 65 Bindowan Drive, Hoppers Crossing, which sold for $1.68 million, according to the Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV). The house, which has five bedrooms and a four-car garage, was sold in July. The highest prices for houses located in other

Nine teenagers in Melton and Wyndham have been charged in relation to a series of theft s from fitness centres and gyms in the west. Police said that 11 theft s had been reported at fitness centres and gyms located in the Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong municipalities during November and December. Offenders allegedly targeted commercial premises in the suburbs of Maribyrnong, Tarneit and Altona North, stealing items such as phones, wallets and keys from storage cubicles, changerooms and bags left in other public areas. “Detectives from Wyndham and Maribyrnong Crime Investigation Units have worked hard to investigate these crimes and hold those responsible to account,” a Victoria Police statement released to Star Weekly said. The nine teenagers, who were arrested over a week-long period, will appear at a children’s court at a later date. “Police would like to remind those attending fitness centres and gyms to secure their valuables in locked storage cubicles,” the Victoria Police statement said. “If these facilities are not available then valuables should be kept in sight at all times.” Alesha Capone

Wyndham Harbour Rotary members hope to help save lives in the most “simple� way. The club members recently assembled 200 birthing kits for women in need around the world. Wyndham Harbour Rotary international director Khadija Awan said the project was one that touched the hearts of many of the women in the club. “A lot of us have experienced childbirth and some were traumatic,� Ms Awan said. “In the next five minutes three women will die during childbirth. “One of the main causes for this is unhygienic birthing processes. “Birthing kits are a simple and effective tool
for basic infection prevention and first-line childbirth care.� Wyndham Harbour Rotary raised $1000 in donations from the St Peter’s Parish in Hoppers Crossing to purchase the material for the kits which included a plastic sheet, thread, scalpel, gloves, soap, and five pieces of gauze. “They will be distributed to countries most in need including Afghanistan and Uganda or as close as Papua New Guinea,� Ms Awan said. “It’s such a simple thing to do and we can save a life. Not only does it save lives, it prevents life-long conditions. “It was a wonderful initiative.�

Champion to manage motocross By Esther Lauaki One of the biggest names in motorcycling, international champion Steve Martin, will be the new operator of Lawrie Emmins Motocross Reserve. Works are underway on the $1.6 million track redevelopment which will eventually cater to beginners and intermediate level riders. Wyndham council’s sports development portfolio holder Cr Peter Maynard said Martin, under the banner of CityMX, was selected because of his track record in the industry.
“We have confidence in Steve Martin’s ability to run the operations of this track, with more than 30 years of industry experience, and a strong career as a motorcycling champion,” Cr Maynard said. “Whether you’re skilled and experienced on a bike, or you’re just getting into it, the newly redeveloped Lawrie Emmins Motocross Track caters to all abilities. “We know that interest in motocross is growing in our community. “This track will cater to those interested in the sport, providing a safe and central location
to have a ride. “By re-opening this facility, we’re bringing motocross closer to home for our community, so they no longer have to travel to Broadmeadows or Bacchus Marsh to have a ride.” Martin said he was excited to be involved in the project from the ground level and ensuring a family-friendly venue was an important outcome. “I am so excited to be able to not only work the finished project but also help in the development phase of the venue,” he said. “When I first came into contact with
Wyndham council about the project, I instantly understood that my vision matched their goals in creating a family-friendly place where motorcycle users from the district and beyond could come together to enjoy riding in a controlled environment. “Motocross tracks are getting harder and harder to find in modern times so it’s a great initiative by the council to create this environmentally-friendly state-of-the-art venue.” Lawrie Emmins Motocross Track will reopen to the public in mid 2020.

Residents urged to be fire ready By Esther Lauaki Wyndham residents are being urged to secure safety plans in preparation for an active fire danger period. The council’s safer communities portfolio holder Kim McAliney said Wyndham’s vast dry grassland is at risk of igniting and spreading rapidly on windy days. “Fires can start and move quickly so it is essential to be aware of what is happening in your area,” she said.

“Make sure you download the VicEmergency app on your phone and tune in to the radio (ABC Radio Melbourne 774) and television for emergency broadcasts during any time of high fire danger. “For your safety, be prepared to leave early
and to plan where you are going. “Rural landowners are required to implement measures to prevent the spread of fire on their properties, including the creation of fire breaks. “All rural residents must cut a 10-metre firebreak around the inside perimeter of their properties and ensure the area around their houses and outbuildings are kept clear. “If your land is next to a residential or commercial development, you can choose to create a 20-metre bare earth break or slash a 30-40 metre break along all neighbouring
residential fence lines. “All residents must cut grass that is near property fencelines and keep their yards free from rubbish and flammable materials. “On days of Total Fire Ban, the lighting of any fires in the open air and the use of certain machinery is prohibited, along with the use of tools and equipment that use a naked flame or generate sparks. “When the fire danger period is officially declared, burning off is prohibited.” Details: emergency.vic.gov.au
Symbols of Samoa Young Wyndham performers learned about love and tradition through their latest showcase. The Nesian Pearl Dance school, in collaboration with Tama Tatau and director Victor Vitaliano, last weekend performed its first polynesian children and teens theatre show Sina and the Eel. Nesian Pearl director Filomena Wairasi said the pupils, 70 children aged between three and 18, had been learning about their cultural heritage through dance and storytelling. “This year is special, aside from teaching our students Siva [Samoan dance] we wanted to teach our children our stories and our history and we have been focusing on learning about the story of the coconut tree,” Ms Wairasi said. “Our students have worked so hard putting this beautiful piece together and the end product is amazing.” The Samoan fabel of Sina and the Eel is a love story about how the first coconut tree sprouted
on the island and the love of a Fijian Prince. “It’s a symbolic story for our children,” Ms Wairasi said. “It includes some key proverbs … about how a person walks through life and carries themselves, we had live singing, acting and dancing. “It’s an exciting time where our Polynesian art is being more accepted and Wyndham as well as the Hobson Bay community has been extremely supportive. “We pride ourselves in being Samoan and believe knowing who we are not only plants our feet in our roots but also helps with self-esteem, building confidence and mental wellbeing.” Esther Lauaki

Police ready for major roads blitz Police will be conducting a road safety operation across the state during the upcoming Christmas and New Year period. Officers from the Westgate Highway Patrol, which covers Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong, will run Operation Roadwise until January 5. Westgate Highway Patrol Sergeant Marty Wallace said: “During this road policing operation, Victoria Police will implement a strategically co-ordinated and tactically focused approach targeting the key contributing factors to road trauma.
“Police will be targeting the main causes of fatalities and serious injuries in crashes, which are excessive speed, driver distraction, restraint non-compliance, fatigue and impaired driving (alcohol and/or drugs).� Sergeant Wallace said Operation Roadwise would also involve police officers monitoring major arterial roads, freeways and highways. Speed cameras will be set up in identified speed and high collision locations. Sergeant Wallace said drivers should plan their trips, be patient and ensure that they have frequent breaks when driving long distances.

He urged drivers to check their tyres, windscreen washers, brakes and lights before embarking on any driving trips. The RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council chairman, Jim Giddings, said it has been demonstrated “time after time� that speed is a contributing factor in most road
crashes. “Therefore stay within the speed limit and drive to suit the conditions,� he said. “Speeding increases both the risk of a crash happening and the severity of injuries sustained when a crash does happen.� Mr Giddings said the work of the RoadSafe group, along with initiatives such as Operation Roadwise, would hopefully reduce the number of serious road crashes during the festive season. He asked the community to report speeding or dangerous drivers to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Plans to develop Western United’s 15,000-seat stadium in Tarneit, have taken a major step forward. Wyndham council last week announced that site investigations at the future home of the stadium, 1160 Sayers Road, have been completed. The $200 million stadium project, which could include a hotel, office buildings and residential projects, is being developed as a partnership between Wyndham council and the Western Melbourne Group. Wyndham council’s lead for the project, director of deals, investment and major projects, Kate Roffey said: “We understand that those looking in from the outside think that nothing has been happening, but behind the scenes we have been racing to complete all the background reports and development needs. “Things like Geotech reports, soil tests and flora and fauna analyses, they aren’t necessarily

Car vandalised in station carpark By Alesha Capone A Tarneit woman and her partner have been left “devastated” after their car was hit and vandalised at the suburb’s train station earlier this month. Katelyn Cooper said her partner parked the car in the dirt lot of Tarneit station about 1.15pm on December 2. When they returned about 6pm, they found their vehicle had been sideswiped and damaged, on its rear passenger side, by another car. The panels on their car had also been
scratched with a sharp object and the word “Loser” carved on the hood. “I was devastated,” Ms Cooper said. Ms Cooper said they parked their car in the middle of the dirt lot, alongside several other cars, and she was positive no other vehicles had been blocked in by their car. “A lot of people parked the way we did that particular day,” she said. “When we park at the station, we always try to be as respectful as possible and not block anyone in.” The couple has been quoted $2500 to fix the car.
They have written a post about the vandalism on the Tarneit Community Crime Watch Facebook page, in the hope of finding any witnesses to the incident. The incident has been reported to police, but Ms Cooper said they were told that CCTV cameras at the station did not cover where their car was parked. She has called for security cameras to be installed to cover this part of the carpark and for more carparks to be created at the station. “There is a lot of land … there is a lot of room for parking expansion,” she said.

Students spread wings Students at Point Cook College have collaborated with a Melbourne artist to create a project focused on migration. Environmental science teacher and sustainability co-ordinator Robyn Cairns said the ‘Words with Wings’ project had been funded by a grant from Creative Victoria, through the Creative Learning Partnerships Program. Ms Cairns said that students worked with artist Kate Gorringe–Smith on the project, which combined art, science and literacy elements to tell the stories of both human and bird migration, including the migratory shorebirds which visit Point Cook’s coastline. As part of the project, professional storyteller Jackie Kerin read a story about a migratory shorebird to pupils in grades one and two. Birdlife Australia educators also assisted the students in learning about shorebirds. “The Word with Wings team of students,
aged six to 12, also had two sessions of birdwatching at The Western Treatment Plant with the help of Lindall Kidd from Birdlife Australia,” Ms Cairns said. “Some of our year 9 visual arts students have also worked closely with Kate and Faith Roper to create a new mural of wetland birds outside the science building.” In addition, 17 students, known as the Words with Wings team, worked with Ms Cairns and Ms Gorringe–Smith to write and illustrate a book titled Rosie Wonders. “The book is about a bar-tailed godwit called Rosie who migrates from Lake Borrie at the Western Treatment Plant to Alaska,” Ms Cairns said. By Alesha Capone Werribee South man Nik Tsardakis has been recognised for his long and dedicated service to the Wyndham community. Mr Tsardakis has been named the winner of this year’s John Nicol Community Service Award, presented by the Committee for Wyndham earlier this month. The award recognises a Committee for Wyndham member, or an individual from a member organisation, who has substantially contributed to the improvement of the quality of life of people in Wyndham, beyond that expected in their usual occupation. Brett Nicol, the son of the late John Nicol, presented Mr Tsardakis with the award. Mr Tsardakis said that having worked with John on community projects, it was “an honour” to be associated with an award named after him. Mr Tsardakis and John were both foundation members of the Werribee District Hospital Charitable Foundation, and Mr Tsardakis was also a founding members of Werribee Hospital Foundation. He has served on the foundation’s board since 1993, including as chair for 10 years. Mr Tsardakis has also been a member of the Rotary Club of Hoppers Crossing for 40 years; has served on the board of Manor Court Werribee Aged Care since 2000; and is a founding member of the Werribee South Ratepayers Association. In addition, he belongs to the Green Wedge Steering Committee, which is working to ensure Werribee South remains a foodbowl. Mr Tsardakis, who was an executive director

Property data at your fingertips By Ewen McRae A new partnership is set to make the home buying experience easier. Property data leader CoreLogic has combined with realestateview.com.au to provide a state-of-the-art price estimator, giving property owners and property seekers instant price value ranges for properties across the state. Every address searched has a range of property data and demographic information relevant to the suburb where it is located.
Toby Balazs, chief executive of realestateview. com.au, said nearly every home buyer used a price estimator in their search, and combining with CoreLogic gave searchers the trust they needed. “We believe that we will have the most accurate property data that can be accessed by home buyers,” Mr Balazs said. “The breadth and depth of property data that CoreLogic brings to us right across the country is amazing, and they’ve got a very strong name in the property industry. We believe by us partnering with them we can provide our
property-seeking audience with more data, accurate data, and give them confidence when they’re performing a property search.” Launching last week, the price estimator will provide home buyers and sellers with an Automated Valuation Model on any property they search through the portal. Mr Balazs said it would be particularly useful as the market goes through a period of fluctuation, with prices in general rising after a previous downturn in the market. “I think it’s an important tool in any market,” he said.
“Australians, as we know, are property obsessed, so there’s no shortage of interest in property. “Whether it be an up-swing or a down-swing in the market, it’s always important to know where the value sits, but in what has been a tough market in 2019 it’s always important to understand what those property price indicators are at an individual level, and then get it verified by one of our agent partners. “For buyers, sellers and vendors, to know what to expect if you take a property to market is very important.”
Driving a foundation Father Bob Maguire is headed into the next year on new wheels, thanks to a Werribee car dealership. The philanthropic priest put the call out to his online followers that his charity, The Father Bob Maguire Foundation, needed a vehicle for its community work. The foundation provides social, emotional and educational support to the community as well as a meals on wheels service and operates STEM bus classrooms in disadvantaged communities. Werribee Nissan answered the call for help last week and donated a brand new Nissan X-Trail ST seven seater vehicle to help the community workers venture across the city. Father Maguire said the charity workers were often in need of transportation but could not afford to purchase a vehicle. “It’s essential that our team are mobile,” he said.
“No time to wait … our clientele deserve immediate assistance being disadvantaged from food poverty and social engagement. “Our partnering with Werribee Nissan will not only help drive a better community but build one together.” Werribee Nissan director Kelly Van Blommestein said the business was “honoured” to be able to help. “Father Bob Maguire Foundation has an outreach program which does community meals, provides an education program, has advocacy service and social inclusion programs, all of which bring dignity, respect and possibility to people,” Ms Van Blommestein said. Sustainable Christmas Youngsters at a Wyndham childcare and education centre are celebrating the festive season in an environmentally-friendly way. In the lead-up to December 25, children at the Guardian Childcare and Education Point Cook have created an artistic Christmas tree using recycled materials. The children helped to paint the tree and decorate it with patty pans and colourful
feathers. They also pasted cut-out pictures of their own faces onto the tree, in the place of baubles. While the children put the Christmas tree together, staff at the centre taught them about the importance of recycling and sustainability. The youngsters also learned about teamwork, as they worked collaboratively to decorate the tree.

Werribee CFA have expressed outrage after having to cut victims from a car following a triple fatality on the Princes Highway yesterday (Tuesday). MY WYNDHAM Werribee CFA volunteer Belinda Craig says protecting the community is her number one priority. She talks to Esther Lauaki. What’s your connection to Wyndham?

I was born and raised in Wyndham, I work at Woolworths in Wyndham Vale and also I am a volunteer firefighter with the Werribee fire brigade for the past 30 years. I am one of 18 female firefighters in our brigade
What’s something people might not know about you?
How long have you lived in the area? 41 years. You were recently deployed to assist with the New South Wales bushfires. What was your role? I led a four-member Werribee crew to patrol fire lines, completing backburning and checking on residents. The crew also included Simon Roberson, Matt Mannix and Rohan Rizzoli, we arrived in NSW on Tuesday and returned on the Saturday.
On the way to the fire zone, we met Bono and other U2 band members at the Melbourne airport. Meeting Bono was awesome and we appreciate their interest, but if I had to choose between meeting a celebrity and saving a house, I’d protect the house any day. That’s our priority. What’s the most challenging thing about your firefighting role? Big fires are challenging but we’re well trained and experienced to deal with them. What other hats do you where in the community? Just my firefighter’s hat.
How long have you been a volunteer firefighter?
What do you love about Wyndham?
I’ve been a volunteer for 30 years, following in the footsteps of my father Don. I joined as soon as I turned 11 and went up to seniors at 16 and have been there ever since. It’s nice to give back to the community. I’ve been on many strike teams, including Sydney 2001-2002, Black
Great community spirit. Growing up in Werribee you get to know a lot of people, so going down the street to grab a few groceries can go from a 20 minute trip to an hour. The people of Werribee are lovely, everyone always helps and everything you need is close by.

There’s a lotta luck at Target Lotto The store has been owned by husband and wife, Carlo and Christine Addamo, for 17 years, with daughter Loretta as the manager for the past nine. The highly knowledgeable team of Jed, Deb and Brenda offer 30 years’ experience between them. They are known for their excellent service and for forging relationships with the large number of regular customers – and put out the welcome mat for any newcomers. “People who come into our store know straight away how well it’s run and it’s great to see them become part of the Target Lotto ‘family’. They leave with a smile on their faces – and their fingers crossed that they’ll be the next lucky winner,” says Carlo. “If it was up to us, everyone would be a big winner!” Being one of only a handful of stores in Australia with four terminals means speedy service, so no long queues. “We run 70 different types of syndicates every week, the largest variety in Australia. He’d seen from media reports that Target Lotto in Hoppers Crossing was one of the luckiest stores in Australia, so Jack* - led by his selfconfessed superstitious leanings - drove from his home in Sunshine West to buy his Tattslotto ticket.
“I’ve got four kids and five grandkids so I’m going to help them out. I’m going to buy myself a house and a new car with some of the winnings.”
In April this year, a middle-aged man who took a 30-minute drive to the store every week for 10 years finally struck it lucky. He won $754,973 – the same amount won in the same draw by a Hoppers Crossing local. Then there’s the Werribee grandmother, a pensioner who’s played weekly at Target Lotto for many years. In August this year, she won more than $2.8 million in a Saturday Tattslotto Superdraw. Mary* said when she checked the numbers and saw she’d won, she just couldn’t believe it. “I was so stressed I’d got it wrong that I called my son and made him check it on his computer,” she tells. “When he saw I’d really won, he kept saying “oh my god, oh my, oh dear” – so I knew

SYNDICATES SHINE Carlo says the luckiest tickets have been from the store’s syndicates, with customers taking weekly syndicates ranging from $20 to $90. These are usually permanent syndicates, with the same numbers selected for each draw. One ticket for under $40 can cover every main draw for the week. “Why not drop in and select a syndicate and we will reserve your spot on a weekly basis?” Carlo suggests. “And I encourage customers to join our Facebook page to keep up to date with in-store offers and promotions, as well as stories about big wins.”

Western Crusaders’ remarkable run has continued, with the side completing a perfect season for the third year to claim the Gridiron Victoria men’s Vic Bowl. Red hot favourites for the grand final against the Monash Warriors, the Crusaders got the job done, winning 36-6. Crusaders coach Craig Wilson said they had a pretty special bunch of players at the club. “We went undefeated for a third season in a row, that’s 40 games in a row undefeated,â€? he said. “Some guys leave and new guys come in and have picked up where others have left off. “The culture is stronger each year and they have found the secret recipe.â€? One key for the Crusaders has been to block out the noise of teams wanting to beat them and focusing on what they can do. Come the grand final, Wilson admitted there had been some nerves. “It was quite an experience and quite a responsibility not to muck it up,â€? he said. “Everyone was focused on doing their job as good as they can and letting the game come to them. “The cream rises to the top.â€? Running back Rohail Akhtar broke open the game with a 60 yard run to put the first score on the board and it released the pressure on the Crusaders. They were in control at half-time, but the game was far from over. “The Warriors ‌ were really strong in the third quarter,â€? Wilson said. “They were the first team to score, but took 10 minutes to do it. “They ran out of time.â€? American quarterback Ryan Deal was a well deserving best on ground. Warriors bank on youth Hoppers Crossing coach Steve Kretiuk is excited about the young talent coming into the senior side for next year’s Western Region Football League division 1 season. A perennial finalist, the Warriors will be boosted by more than half a dozen players stepping up from the under-18 premiership side. Kretiuk said it had been a number of years since they had a group like this coming through. “We’ve had a good influx of under-18s come up and train really well with us,” he said. “We have about seven or eight who could play a lot of games. “Having this is great, not just for next year or the year after, but for the next 10 years. There’s some good quality players. “They will be putting pressure on the other guys and there will be competition for spots.” The under-18 team has joined the senior team through some of the pre-season so far. Kretiuk said they hadn’t done that for a while, with both teams taking a lot out of it. He said the playing group had come back to pre-season in good shape. “We’re averaging 40 to 50 players at training. We asked them for a little bit more and the group has come back looking good.” Kretiuk said the big test would come over the Christmas break when the players had to put in all the work by themselves. The coach said they had identified a couple of areas that needed to be addressed for next season. One was fitness, another was that they fell short in the midfield, They have looked to fill the midfield deficit with two recruits.
Former AFL player Patrick Veszpremi has committed to the club full-time, while Hayden Walters, who has been on VFL lists, has also signed. Walters is coming back from a knee reconstruction in 2018. Kretiuk said the signing of Veszpremi was massive. “Getting Patrick is fairly big and he brings leadership into the side, being an ex-Sydney and Western Bulldogs player. “He has been outstanding at training and training at a high standard. “Sometimes guys come back from a higher level and take the foot off the pedal, he has gone to another level. “He has shone already and hasn’t played a game.” The Warriors finished the regular season fourth and were knocked out in an elimination final by rivals Werribee Districts. Kretiuk said they know where they sit. “We were pretty disappointed how we finished this year,” he said. “We’re under no illusions we have to improve and part of that improvement has to come from within.” The Warriors will kick of their season next year against Sunshine at home on April 4. They have a blockbuster on Anzac Day playing Wydnham rivals, Werribee Distircts. The Tigers start their season against Spotswood on April 4, while Point Cook hosts Yarraville-Seddon on the same day.
