Carols unite community The Christian Churches of Wyndham invite you to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ at their annual Carols by Candlelight on December 14.

Run by Wyndham Minister’s Network and proudly supported by Wyndham City Council, the Wyndham Carols by Candlelight aims to bring the whole community together to celebrate the joy of Christmas. Running for more than 30 years, this iconic event has been attracting thousands from the community each year, and is a tradition for many families across the region. The feature artist is the beloved Marina Prior, soprano and stage actor, who will sing alongside the Salvation Army Melbourne Staff Band, led by Ken Waterworth. This year’s program will feature a favourite depiction of the nativity – complete with live animals – along with the Wyndham Combined Churches Carols Musical Team. Eddy Venema, event organiser and pastor at Equip International Church, says they are looking forward to the community gathering for the much-loved carols. “We recognised how much the community missed the staging of this event last year,” Eddy says, “and we’ve worked hard to present a wonderful show.”
Gates will open at 5.30pm, with kids’ activities including a petting zoo, entertainers, and the Stilt Divas providing fun for the whole family. Santa will also be available for photos – so don’t forget your camera. Bring along a picnic blanket, a torch and warm jackets. Pack a picnic or enjoy treats from a wide variety of food trucks on site. Pre-show entertainment starts at 7pm, and will feature live music, with the main event starting at 8pm.

Gang attacks on rise A Wyndham Vale father is calling for police to ramp up patrols in the city’s west following an alleged attack on his 15-year-old son. Ricardo Galvez wants a heavier police presence in Wyndham Vale, Manor Lakes and Tarneit in the north after his son Andy and a friend were threatened by a group of six youths and had their mobile phones stolen last month. The incident was one of the latest in a spate of attacks on teens in the area since October. “They were approached by a group of young guys, who looked like they were the same age as my son or older, when they were walking home from the park along Macquarie Drive on November 16,” Mr Galvez said. “They were made to unlock their phones and give them the passwords or they would bash them.” Werribee police last week arrested two teenagers in relation to the incident. Mr Galvez said numerous neighbours he had spoken with had teenagers who had experienced similar incidents. “Our kids can’t go anywhere without fear of being threatened by groups of youths,” he told Star Weekly. “People are very unhappy and they’ve had enough … We can’t live like that. “We want to see more police so we feel safe.” Wyndham Acting Inspector Brett Kahan said youth crime is a focus. “The north is a real focus area for us and we have been actively working on getting more patrols in that area,” Acting Inspector Kahan said. “We do acknowledge that there is a challenge in getting more patrols into the north.
“It is such a huge growth area and the difficulty is that police numbers are not growing as quickly as the population is out there … It’s a significant area to cover. “Youth are moving into the area at a rate like never before and we are mindful of the youth crime rate particularly in Tarneit, Wyndham Vale and Manor Lakes.” Police have had their work cut out for them as a spate of attacks on youths sweeps Wyndham.

Last Tuesday, an 18-year-old man was allegedly robbed of his phone, shoes, headphones, a bankcard and some money when he was walking along Armstrong Road in Manor Lakes. Police arrested a 16-year-old a short time later at Eagle Stadium in Werribee. On November 9, two teenage boys – aged 13 and 16 – were allegedly assaulted and robbed in Kookaburra Avenue, Werribee. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 00. Acting Inspector Kahan encouraged residents to give feedback at this Saturday’s Neighbourhood Watch meeting at the Wyndham North Police Station. “This is a forum where we can hear residents’ concerns, they can tell us where we could be doing better and try to work with the community to help,” he said. Pound move raises concern By Esther Lauaki A resident fears that “drug-affected” animal owners could put children at risk if the Wyndham City Pound is relocated to a facility near a Point Cook play centre and a bowling alley. A planning application was advertised last month for the relocation of the pound, based at Old Geelong Road in Hoppers Crossing, to a larger facility at Wallace Avenue in Point Cook. But one resident, who asked not to be named, said he held concerns about the proposed new location for the pound which is between the Oz Tenpin Point Cook bowling venue and Hijinx

Play Centre. “I’m concerned about the number of people that go in to the pound to pick up their seized animals that are aggressive, could be on drugs or drug-affected and have any number of issues,” he told Star Weekly. “The proposed new facility would be close
to a children’s play centre and also a ten-pin bowling venue. “I wouldn’t like to see any children put at risk because of the types of people that are going to retrieve their animals.” He said access to the proposed location would also be more difficult because of its proximity to notorious traffic hotspots such as Point Cook Road and Old Geelong Road. City operations acting director Jenny McMahon said the facility would be “purely a holding pound” and in line with existing demand. “There would not be any more than four dogs and 15 cats in the facility at any one time,” Ms
McMahon said. “Any animals held for more than two days are relocated to the Lost Dogs Home.” She said that dogs identified as a community safety risk are housed in a secure location outside the municipality. “The animals held at council’s holding pound are not considered a risk to the community and will leave under the supervision of their owner,” Ms McMahon said. “Security measures and procedures at the new pound are in line with current practice. “The animals will be housed in pens within the property and there are three locked indoor areas between the pens and the carpark.”

Construction of the new $45 million police station in Werribee is expected to finish by the end of next year. Werribee MP Tim Pallas visited the construction site last week to meet with local police officers. Mr Pallas said the new Werribee station would be one of the the state’s largest police complexes outside the Melbourne CBD. Following a tender process, Victoria Police appointed Fairbrother Construction to build the police complex. The complex will be able to house more than 460 staff and officers, including uniformed, crime investigation, transit safety officers and administration staff. The Wyndham Police Complex will be located at 134 Princes Highway, behind the current police station. The old station will be demolished once the new complex has been completed. It forms part of the broader Wyndham Justice Precinct being developed as part of the Werribee National Employment and Innovation Cluster. The state government has provided more than $45 million to build the police station, as part of a $3 billion investment in policing across Victoria. As part of this investment, more than 1900 new police have already been deployed or allocated across the state, including 93 to the Westgate Division, which includes the Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong municipalities.

Nine motorists were issued with infringements for excessive speed, unregistered vehicles and seat-belt related offences during a Wyndham police traffic operation earlier this month. The December 3 operation took in the Princes Freeway and Duncans Road in Werribee. Police have charged a man and woman with multiple drug trafficking offences, after the pair were found unconscious in a car on Ranfurlie Avenue, Point Cook on November 29. A search of the car resulted in police allegedly finding a quantity of drugs including methamphetamine, GHB, stolen goods and cash. A 23-year-old Point Cook man and a 22-year-old South Kingsville woman have been charged.

Point Cook teenager Heidi Rasmussen has won a slew of awards recognising her dedication and hard work in completing a school-based traineeship. Ms Rasmussen, 18, recently completed a certificate III in companion animal services at The Gordon in Geelong, while studying her VCE at Point Cook Senior Secondary College. She also worked at Direct Vet Services (DVS) in Point Cook on weekends. Ms Rasmussen won the school-based apprentice/trainee excellence award from The Gordon, and another award of the same title for Gforce Employment Solutions, which helps to deliver the course she studied.
She also received the Victorian school-based apprentice/trainee of the year award, was runner-up in the Australian school-based trainee of the year awards, and won the Apprenticeship Employment Network school-based trainee of the year gong. “All of it’s really, really, exciting,� Ms Rasmussen said. Ms Rasmussen said she had wanted to become a vet since she was “a child knee-high�. Ms Rasmussen thanked Dr Sarah from DVS, trainer Megan Devlin from The Gordon and Tracey Fulmer from Gforce.

No sign of promised carparks By Alesha Capone An Opposition MP has called on the state government to fulfill a promise it made before last year’s election, to build 1600 new and upgraded carparks at train stations in Melbourne’s west. In a statement in Parliament last month, Western Metropolitan member Bernie Finn said commuters were still waiting, more than a year after the election. “How much longer do they have to wait for
these promises from the Andrews government to be kept?” he asked Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan. Mr Finn said that in the lead-up to the election, both Werribee MP Tim Pallas and the then-candidate for Tarneit, Sarah Connolly, put out brochures in their respective electorates promising to build the carparks. Mr Finn said this included a commitment to build 500 new and upgraded spaces at Tarneit station, more than 300 spaces at Wyndham Vale station and more than 100 spaces at
Werribee station. He said the brochures also promised to install “new lighting and CCTV to make the stations safer”. But Mr Finn said that commuters were still waiting for the promised carparks and safety measures. “The people of the Werribee and Tarneit electorates are still waiting,” he said. In September a state government spokesman told Star Weekly that “early planning has begun” on the new and upgraded carparks and that the government would work with
councils, rail operators and the community on the design. Last week, a spokesperson said: “We’re getting on with providing more carparks at Wyndham Vale, Werribee, Tarneit and Watergardens train stations. These car parks will free up local streets and make it easier and encourage more people to catch a train.” The spokesperson did not answer questions about how many carparks would be new and how many would be upgraded, or how much installing the carparks would cost.
Vehicle crime on hit list An initiative aimed at raising awareness of vehicle crime has been launched in Wyndham. Police, Wyndham council, community groups and the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council (NMVTRC) have joined forces for Operation Bounce Back. The operation, led by the NMVTRC, provides a $15,000 grant for councils and police to help educate the public about ways to help prevent motor vehicle theft. Police and representatives from Neighbourhood Watch Tarneit Central handed out brochures outlining ways to help prevent theft of, and from, cars at the Tarneit train station last Monday. Senior Sergeant Steve Hayes said police in the Wyndham area were targeting vehicle crime. “Combining this with public awareness and target hardening is likely to achieve improved and more sustainable results in reducing vehicle crime,” he said. Senior Sergeant Hayes said a growing
population and expanding Police Service Area presented challenges in maintaining a consistent, high visibility of police. “Community support and shared ownership of the problem is increasingly important,” he said. Senior Sergeant Hayes encouraged drivers to take valuable items out of parked cars, or at least not leave them within sight, including tradies tools. Drivers should also endeavour to park vehicles where there is good lighting and where CCTV is available, and when at home, in a garage or the driveway. Crossing designs a ‘disaster’ By Esther Lauaki The state government’s design solutions for the removal of Wyndham’s three level crossings have been labelled a “disaster� by residents who are campaigning to have the project halted. The small group of residents, led by the Wyndham Infrastructure Network, describe the options offered for the removal of the two railway crossings at Werribee and Cherry streets and the third at Old Geelong Road as a “quick-fix�. Those against plans to construct road and
rail bridges, eliminating the railway crossings, are calling for the Level Crossing Removal Project to head back to the drawing board. Werribee’s Duncan McDougall said community consultation sessions, which wound up in July, were poorly attended and did not give residents adequate time to give feedback. “It has come as a shock to the community that the consultation phase has come to a close without any real consultation having occurred,� Mr McDougall told Star Weekly. “I acknowledge that this vital work needs to
be completed across the Metropolitan network to increase the volume of train services, improve traffic flow and reduce avoidable accidents and fatalities at these crossings ‌ we do not want a plan for 10 years as proposed, we require forward thinking to cope with the projected growth of our community.� Mr McDougall also criticised the government’s recent adoption of a revised design for a new road bridge, which will be built east of the existing Cherry Street level crossing, to connect Tarneit Road and the Princes Highway.
Plans also include a well-lit, accessible pedestrian underpass to be built to maintain pedestrian and cyclist access to homes and local shops. Cherry Street will then be closed permanently. LXRP project director Tony Hedley told Star Weekly that following “detailed engineering assessments and community consultation� the designs for each of the level crossing removal sites would provide the best outcome. Major work on the Cherry Street project is expected to start next year.
Wheely great Christmas Santa’s getting a hand from Point Cook’s Matilda this Christmas. The year 4 Point Cook College pupil, with the help of her grandparents Lynn and John Tout, collected two trailer loads and a car boot full of toys last week for children in need. Matilda also helped to deck out her “pretty cool� grandmother’s Holden Goldwing motorcycle to pile up with donated jigsaw puzzles, trains, board games, action figures and books. “This is the first time I’ve done this,� she said. “It makes me feel grateful that I can help other kids get toys and grateful that I have toys as well.� The Touts, who are members of the Westgate Wanderers motorcycle club, completed the annual Geelong Toy Run from Eastern Beach to Queescliff where they donated the toys for distribution to various charities. “Every year motorcycle groups collect toys
and give them to charity,â€? Mrs Tout said. “It’s all about people ‌ we hope to show Matilda what a great thing it is to give to other people instead of just receiving gifts. “It’s the giving side of Christmas which is sometimes lost with our young ones.â€? Hats off to Cup fashion By Esther Lauaki Punters turned out in spectacular fashion for the Werribee Cup at the weekend. The Werribee Racing Club experienced one of its biggest crowds in years, with thousands of racegoers frocked up and enjoying the sunshine for the eight-race meet. The Paul Preusker-trained Rupture convincingly took out the main race, his second country cup of the year. Mr Preusker said the team was “enjoying a good ride” with Rupture, ridden by apprentice Michael Poy. “We came here with the right horse and credit to him, he keeps standing up and thriving,” Mr Preusker said. Double You Tee took second place, ahead of Aristocratic Miss, third, and Danon Roman in fourth. Jenny Beard won the coveted Fashions on the Field title with a black and yellow dress paired with top hat, while a dapper Michael McAlpine won the men’s category with a pink ensemble. The next meet at Werribee racecourse will be held on Christmas Eve.

Facing up to the reality of fire CFA chief officer Steve Warrington is urging every Victorian to take responsibility for their safety Victoria is at the start of another hot, dry and difficult fire season. That was clear on November 21 when we called the first ‘Code Red’ fire danger rating in almost 10 years. That day, we saw catastrophic fire conditions with more than 150 fires start. There is no denying that climate change is increasing the frequency, severity and timing of dangerous bushfire weather conditions. More than 30 years ago, Ash Wednesday became a tragic new milestone for fire conditions in our state when 75 Victorians and South Australians lost their lives. The majority of these deaths occurred as people attempted to
evacuate at the last minute. These deaths, coupled with research on the flammability of buildings, led to the general idea that if you couldn’t leave well ahead of a fire, the safest thing was to stay and defend. That approach was supported by fire services for many years. Tragically … the 2009 Victorian bushfires introduced us to catastrophic bushfire conditions, the likes of which had never been seen in modern Australia. We realised that day that staying and defending in catastrophic, or ‘Code Red’ conditions was a futile venture with the most heartbreaking outcomes. And that’s why we talk incessantly about leaving early. Weather
conditions have changed. Fires have changed. Our behaviour must now change too. As a fire agency, we fear that Victorians are sliding into a ‘wait and see’ mentality with no clear plan or trigger point of what to do and when. We are heading back to the attitudes which saw dozens of people die on Ash Wednesday. This fire season, we are asking every Victorian living in high-risk fire areas to take responsibility for their own safety. The only way to guarantee that you will survive a fire on days of Extreme or Code Red conditions, is leave early and not be there. No home, farm or business is worth your life.

Fire fleet takes off A larger-than-ever fleet of 50 firefighting aircraft unveiled at Avalon will be “critical” this fire season, Victoria’s emergency services minister said last week. The fleet will hit the skies in coming months to defend lives and property across the state. Police and Emergency Services Minister Lisa Neville said the record fleet, including two large air tankers and two aircranes, would support firefighters in what is shaping up to be a busy fire season. “With the return of two large air tankers, a record air fleet and thousands of firefighters ready to respond, Victoria is more prepared than ever for the upcoming fire season,” Ms Neville said on her visit to Avalon Airport. “Victoria’s largest-ever firefighting fleet will
provide crucial support to our hard-working crews on the ground this summer, responding immediately to major incidents right across the state.” The large air tankers can each carry up to 15,000 litres of water, foam or retardant and will be based at Avalon airport. The aircranes, which will be based at Essendon and Moorabbin airports, can carry up to 7500 litres of water and are essential in supporting other aircraft across the state. The fleet also includes a mix of fire-bombing aircraft, air supervision and air intelligencegathering aircraft, and has a surge capacity of up to 100 that can support the Victorian core fleet. Friend becomes a real life-saver By Alesha Capone Tarneit man Nazree Nasir is being hailed for helping to save the life of his friend Shawal Baderi, who experienced a heart attack last month. The two long-time friends and colleagues, met during their tertiary studies. Mr Baderi said he suffered the heart attack on November 19, and passed out while getting into bed. In a panic, his wife Nadia accidentally called the Singaporean emergency number and Mr
Nasir, before dialling triple-0. Mr Nasir said that after receiving the call, he and his wife Dila – who live close to the Baderi family – jumped in the car and “raced” over. They arrived while Nadia was on the phone to the triple-0 operator. In tears, she passed the phone to Mr Nasir. Mr Nasir said the triple-0 operator asked him to describe Mr Baderi’s symptoms and diagnosed the heart attack. “Then she said, ‘Listen to me and do exactly what I say’,” Mr Nasir said. “She said I had to do CPR and if I did it too hard, I might break his
ribs, and if I was too soft, it might not work.” Mr Nasir said he performed CPR on Mr Baderi for about 15 minutes, before paramedics arrived on the scene. Mr Nasir said he had completed a CPR course about three years ago, but the triple-0 operator’s instructions were invaluable. “The lady on the phone did a great job,” he said. Mr Baderi said he came to as the paramedics arrived on the scene. He thanked Mr Nasir for giving him a “second chance” at life with Nadia and their
children – sons Riah, 12, and Rizz, 8, and daughter Isabella, 4. Since the heart attack, surgeons have installed a balloon and stents in Mr Baderi’s heart. “I’d also like to thank the paramedics, Werribee Mercy and St Vincent’s, they all did a fantastic job,” he said. An Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority (ESTA) spokesperson said its call-takers answered more than 7000 calls a day, with some of those calls requiring the call-taker to provide CPR instructions over the phone.
Diwali dance success Teenage dancer Sarah Roberts has taken out top honours in a youth talent competition held during the Wyndham Diwali event at Presidents Park last month. Sarah, 17, said she performed a contemporary solo to the song Castle by Halsey, in the 12 to 18 year category of the competition. Sarah said she was “very excited“ to receive first place, with her prize including a certificate and return tickets to the Gold Coast. Sarah, who is also trained in lyrical, acrobatic, jazz, hip-hop and musical theatre dance styles, said she choreographed the dance routine herself. “I think I enjoyed doing the choreography, having the freedom to do the storyline, choosing the movements that suited me best,“ she said. Sarah, who graduated from year 12 a few weeks ago, said she was interested in studying both psychology and dance at university, and
potentially embarking on a career as a dance teacher. Her mother, Simona Grippi, who is a teacher at Baden Powell College, also runs the after-school Dance4All program at the college’s Tarneit campus. Sarah sometimes helps teach at Dance4All, and said she would take over teaching all of the program’s classes from next year. “I like being able to pass on what I know to help improve others, and for little girls who dream of becoming ballerinas, I’d like to think I can help them get started on their way,” Sarah said. A new report has rated Werribee, Point Cook and Werribee South as “unaffordable” for most renters earning a yearly household income of $60,000. The latest Rental Affordability Index (RAI) report – which is released annually by National Shelter, Community Sector Banking, SGS Economics & Planning and the Brotherhood of St Laurence – showed that within each of the three suburbs, there were between 80 to 100 affordable rental properties available between April and June, for households earning $60,000 annually. Hoppers Crossing, Manor Lakes, Tarneit, Truganina and Wyndham Vale were ranked as “moderately affordable” in the RAI for households earning $60,000, with between 100 to 120 affordable rental properties available in each suburb. For households earning $40,000 and below, the whole of Wyndham was ranked as “severely unaffordable”. According to the RAI report, single pensioners have an indicative gross annual income of $27,856; a pensioner couple $47,970; a single person on the Newstart Allowance $18,122; and a single part-time worker parent on benefits $39,510. The RAI said that it considered rental housing unaffordable if the household income required to pay rent equalled 30 per cent or more of a household’s annual income. The report said that for people on Newstart, rent usually cost at least 77 per cent of their income, in every Australian capital city. Brotherhood of St Laurence executive director Conny Lenneberg said there was an “urgent need” to raise the Newstart Allowance.
Professional wrestler Cadman Turner, aka The Mighty Cadman, will return to his old stomping ground when he heads to Werribee for a Showdown Wrestling event this week. Turner, who is Australian but has been living in Canada for the past three years, said he often participated in Werribee wrestling matches when his career first began. Nowadays, he trains at the Canadian Battle Arts Academy and in August took part in the WWE SummerSlam four-day tournament. About a month ago, he travelled to the United Kingdom to represent the WWE. He also plays a wrestler in the second series of the VICE show Dark Side of the Ring, with the episode he appears in due to air next year “It’s been a pretty full-on year for me,” Turner said. Turner said that growing up in Bendigo, his love of wrestling developed when he would watch WWE on Foxtel at a friend’s house. Festive lunch for families The Park Hotel in Werribee hosted a special Christmas lunch on Monday. The hotel held its third annual foundation lunch, in conjunction with The Smith Family. The event was attended by 15 families and 42 children. Youngsters at the event included Manorvale Primary School pupils, from families supported by The Smith Family. Hotel owners Connie and Nick Christou said families at the festive lunch enjoyed a meal and entertainment – including a wildlife show featuring a miniature crocodile and lizards – and each child also received a donated gift. “We have local businesses and individuals who support a child with a present,” Mr
Christou said. “We’re a community and we all support each other.” Woolworths in Werribee donated a hamper for each family in attendance, while Werribee Open Range Zoo donated free family passes. Mr Christou said staff and chefs from The Park also donated their time to help run the lunch. Ms Christou said that the children at the event were aged between two and 15 years old. “I think it is about the fact this time of year is hard for everyone, and it’s good to let people and families know there are others out there thinking of them and people out there who want to help,” she said. Youth find digital feet By Esther Lauaki Young leaders will find their feet in digital media and communications thanks to the Wyndham EYouth project. Thomas Carr College’s Jess Gleeson was among the new graduates of the two-year project who celebrated their achievements earlier this month. The free program, for 16 to 25-year-olds, is made up of students working towards a vocational qualification and young people in voluntary leadership, mentoring and marketing roles. It aimed to give young people in Wyndham skills in digital media, communication and leadership. Learning city portfolio holder Cr Josh Gilligan said as a result of the project more than 50 students have re-engaged with education, graduating with a certificate in information, digital media and technology from Victoria University Polytechnic. “It’s terrific to see the creativity and passion of our young people on show, with students developing skills in leadership, creative arts, media and project management,” Cr Gilligan said. “The program participants have developed workforce-ready skills and portfolio of work, building their own websites and podcasts, honing their graphic design, photography and videography skills and even creating their own animations. “As a result of this positive experience many participants are now seeking further study in the field. “One of the great legacies of this program has been the development of a creative community of young people with different skills and interests.”
Residents urged not to waste water Wyndham residents have been urged to make every drop of water count, as part of a campaign aimed at getting Melburnians to use 155 litres of water per person, per day. According to the annual Water Outlook report, which is put together by City West Water, Melbourne Water, South East Water and Yarra Valley Water, Melburnians use an average 162 litres of water per person, per day. The report stated that Melbourne’s water storage level is 63.9 per cent, and that residential water use made up 65 per cent of Melbourne’s total water use – with showering accounting for almost a third of water used at home. City West Water’s acting managing director Maree Lang said that factors such as an increasing population and a warming climate have contributed to Melbourne’s storages decreasing by an annual average of 61 billion litres over the past five years. “As a community we do need to be more efficient with our water use – Melburnians are great at using water wisely, but more can be done to reduce the demand on our water supplies,” she said. “From brushing your teeth with the tap off, to shaving one minute off your shower time and sorting out water leaks, we all have a role to play,” Ms Lang said. Wyndham council is calling on retail and hospitality employers to give young people a fresh start. The Fresh Start Employment Pathways Program is one of a series of council youth development initiatives focused on finding local jobs for young people. Learning city portfolio holder Josh Gilligan said the Wyndham Community and Education Centre would offer young people training, insights and support into casual and part-time employment in retail and hospitality. “This is a real opportunity to kick-start a career and the partnership has already matched job-ready participants with employers keen to give our young people the opportunity to join the workforce,” Cr Gilligan said. “We want the next generation of workers to find work that suits their skills and interests so they can gain experience in that industry and continue to grow within the company or make the decision to gain some education to further their career. “Young people can offer a fresh perspective to the workplace and have the energy and motivation to work their way up the career ladder.” Cr Gilligan said employers could save time and money on recruiting by hiring young people who had already been put through job readiness training, tailored to retail and hospitality. She chats with Alesha Capone. What do you enjoy about working in education? When I finished school, I attended a teacher’s college in Geelong. From the day I started teaching, I loved it. I’m 67 now and I tell people that for the last 62 years, I’ve gotten up and gone to school. Somewhere in the first year of teaching, I had a magic moment, where I knew I’d taught a child something. From that moment onwards, I realised that it was such a privilege to do that. I also really enjoy the opportunity to work with truly amazing teachers – these days, it’s not an easy gig. I’ve met some really passionate, committed, smart and generous-to-a-fault teachers. Have you always been based in the west?
How long have you been at Baden Powell? I’m coming up to 20 years next July. In 2000, I started as Derrimut Heath principal – prior to that, I was principal at Glen Orden Primary

My first school was Deer Park West and it was just amazing. We say – and I believe it to be true – innovation, kindness, really caring about kids and wanting to make a difference to their lives, abounds in schools in the west. I feel proud when kids live up to their potential. We have over 60 different language groups at the school (Baden Powell), and many young people come from refugee-type backgrounds. We put a lot of faith in our kids as school leaders. We see so many of them who move from school with confidence in themselves as community leaders. School which is now known as Wyndham Park Primary School. You’re also in a local Rotary club? A significant part of my life has been Wyndham
Rotary, which I joined 25 years ago. I think Rotary and education collided for me, in a way, both – among many other others – are about putting a lot of support, thinking and planning for young people. Rotary really does change lives for good, when you connect with Rotary
only good ever comes from it. From my point of view, I’ve been very blessed. in everything I’ve done in Rotary, I’ve learned so much about myself and whatever you give, you get back 100 times in what you see as being able to help people.

Werribee High School’s long-awaited assembly hall will soon become a reality with the announcement last week of the provision of a Government grant for the project. Dr. Ken Coghill, MLA for Werribee, told the Banner on Thursday that the assembly hall would be built in the 1980-81 financial year.
Werribee Council has raised a stink over the new $5 million aerator system recently installed at the Board of Works sewerage farm. Werribee Councillor and Werribee Farm Advisory member Frank Purcell is not convinced that the system, which has impressed world experts, reduces odours at the farm.
Plans for Wyndham’s long-awaited community health centre are back to square one, with the Department of Human Services (DHS) re-assessing the project. The department has shelved the original plans, which surfaced in 1992, on the grounds they are now obsolete, in favour of a complete re-assessment of the centre.
Random and domestic attacks have been blamed for an alarming rise in violence on the streets of Wyndham now averaging more than two assaults a day. Assaults in Wyndham increased by 55 per cent over the past 12 months, the latest Victoria Police crime statistics show.

SPORT Surprise ABL call up spurs Sunshine’s Jordan Young

One of the keys behind Sunshine’s blistering start to the Baseball Victoria summer league division 1 season has been the form of shortstop Jordan Young. Young has been growing in confidence in the batters box, while maintaining his typically high standard defensively in the in-field, which has seen Eagles coach Stuart Clayton label him as the best shortstop in the league. Young’s impressive start to the season was recognised at higher levels when he was recently called up to play for a short-handed Auckland Tuatara in the Australian Baseball League. The 26-year-old had long aspired to play in the ABL, but never thought the opportunity would come with anyone other than the hometown Melbourne Aces. It was a nice surprise for Young when he was called up for the Tuatara to play against none other than the Aces. “They gave me a call early in the week saying they needed a local player, so I was able to make the time and go down,” Young said. “It’s something I wasn’t expecting, but very exciting at the same time.” Young relished the experience playing with
Auckland. Welcomed to the Tuatara fold by the players and coaches, he felt comfortable from the moment he stepped into the clubhouse. “They were really good people all round,” Young said. “They all welcomed me in and enjoyed having me there. “It was very positive.” Young showed he was not there to merely make up the numbers, producing a number of quality, though luckless at-bats, before getting his first ABL hit. He was not as nervous as he envisaged he might be, which is probably to do with the fact he was coming face to face with Aces players, who he has great knowledge of through his time with Sunshine. “Playing against Melbourne, I know a lot of guys on that team, so it made it a bit easier,” Young said. “I had a little bit of knowledge on the opposition that I could use to help me prepare. “The nerves weren’t as bad as I thought it would be.” While he is hopeful of another ABL call up in the not too distant future, the Eagles’
playing assistant coach is focused on taking his club side to premiership glory. The Eagles remain top of the ladder, despite a narrow 3-2 loss to Sandringham on Sunday. “We’ve got a really good team this year and our record shows that,” Young said. “We’ve got to keep it going. “I think everyone is pretty eager to go as far as we can and try and win the championship this year. “Last year we made it to the finals for the first time in quite a while in division one, so we’re keen and driven to go as far as we can.” Young will continue to play a key role for Sunshine. “I’ve been pretty consistently getting on base throughout the whole season, but in terms of clean, safe, good quality hits, they’ve been starting to come in the last five or six games,” Young said. Sunshine will play the third game of its three-game series with Sandringham at the Melbourne Ballpark tonight before turning its focus to Waverley Wildcats on Sunday. Lance Jenkinson
Sweet taste of Victory By Lance Jenkinson Western United coach Mark Rudan cut the look of a satisfied and relieved man on Sunday evening. United ended its frustrating three-game losing streak with a come-from-behind 3-1 win over Melbourne Victory in an A-League local derby at GMHBA Stadium. With honourable losses piling up in recent weeks, United needed to find a win that would keep them within touching distance of the top teams in the competition. Carrying a two-goal lead into half-time, United did what it has rarely done in the early part of this season, put up the shutters and defended all three points. Rudan made no apologies for the defensive style of play after taking the lead in a pulsating first half. “Today, particularly at half-time, it was about doing what we needed to do [to win],” Rudan said. “We play in a bit of a result oriented world, so it was important that defensively we tightened things up. “The last three games we’ve won every facet in terms of stats, except for the one that’s the most important and that’s the scoreboard. “Today, the opposite, but we don’t really care. “The first half performance, we did enough to win that game, then in the second half they rolled their sleeves, they were very disciplined and very structured in terms of what our game plan was, so I’m really proud of them.” The opening 45 minutes was action packed for the 10,128 spectators – a record home crowd for Western United. It was the visiting Melbourne Victory who drew first blood, when the speedy Andrew Nabbout pounced to score on the counter in the 14th minute. As has been the trend for most of the season, Western United seem to enjoy the challenge of fighting back from a deficit. United was swift with its response with veteran striker Besart Berisha awkwardly latching on to a perfect Connor Pain cross to head in the equaliser in the 17th minute. Out of respect to the Victory fans, who he will remain a legend amongst, Berisha was relatively muted in his goal celebration. Dead ball specialist Alessandro Diamanti whipped in a nice ball into the box and Kone was afforded too much space and volleyed home uncontested. Just before the break, Western United found a third goal, and this was jaw-dropping good. Speedy winger Josh Risdon delivered a peach of a cross to Berisha, who glanced his header inside the far post. It was a thing of beauty and Berisha could not help but celebrate with gusto on this occasion.

That issue was totally rectified in the win over the Victory. “There was a massive emphasis on our attacking third [at training] and you saw the result today,” Rudan said. “I’m really pleased for them because when you work on things on the training track and it comes to fruition out on the pitch on game day, as coaches there’s nothing better for us.” The fourth-placed Western United will have a short turnaround to Friday night’s trip to Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium.

Kia’s new Seltos hits the road Kia has released its all new sub-compact crossover SUV, the Seltos. The name ‘Seltos’ is derived from ‘Celtos’, mythological son of Hercules. EQC, game changer for Mercedes By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring The Mercedes-Benz EQC, a family-size SUV, is the first all-electric vehicle from the prestigious German company. It’s built by EQ, the division of Mercedes-Benz established to guide the company’s transition to electric mobility. Mercedes-Benz Australia-Pacific chief executive and managing director Horst von Sanden, said Australia was among the first countries in the world to receive stock of the ground-breaking EQC, with the first deliveries to customers expected early 2020. “The EQC is a game changer for Mercedes-Benz, but also it imposes a more luxurious standard of electric vehicle ownership,� he said. “Our aim has never been to be the first to this market, but to offer the most complete solution possible to the question of future mobility. With the all-electric EQC, we are confident we have done just that. Electric now has a Mercedes.� Energy consumption for the Mercedes EQC is rated at 21.4 kWh/100km. With a full charge the EQC can travel for up to 434km (ADR measured). Charging options include free and unlimited fast-charging for the first five years of ownership at Chargefox ultra-rapid charging stations. By the time the first EQC deliveries begin, about 20 ultra-rapid charging sites will be located in Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Using this network can provide a driving range from ‘empty’ of about 220 kilometres in 30 minutes, at the maximum DC charging rate of 110kW. Mercedes-Benz EQC owners will also be able to use a growing number of commercial pay-as-you-go fast-charging locations fitted with a Type 2 CCS plug. EQC customers can add a Mercedes-Benz
cars actually love because they are travelling at relatively slow speeds and every time you slow down and/or put the brakes on electricity is added to the battery. The Merc EQC is a decent-sized vehicle but has an excellent turning circle as there’s no combustion engine taking up space between the front wheels. This makes it a cinch around the tightest of roundabouts. Acceleration is instantaneous. We had started with the computer saying we had 318km till empty. Less than you might expect, but very slow speed driving in tight underground carparks does chew up any type of fuel. After that initial 40km near the city the range the distance to empty was at 293km. At long last we were onto the open road, heading by a circuitous country drive to Torquay. There were plenty of hills, again you use extra electricity going up and get some of it back on the way down. Bends were taken with a minimum of fuss. Steering feel is a good on the EQC as on any other SUV Merc we tested. Again, the huge spread of torque made life simple and pleasant. When we arrive we had covered 165km and the computer was showing 214km remaining. The Ultra smooth shape of the Merc EQC looks great. (Supplied)

Customers who have already registered to purchase a Mercedes-Benz EQC 400 4MATIC will be first in line to confirm the specification of their vehicle.
Summing up
As well as pure electric vehicle, Mercedes EQ will also offer a range of options including electrically-boosted combustion engines and plug-in hybrids.

The Community Pantry will help those struggling alone, and families battling to keep food on the table this Christmas. The Salvation Army is very familiar with what too many families face at this time of year. Take, for example, Jennie and Rob, hardworking and loving parents of three children, battling to raise their family on shift work (and coping with drought and floods in recent years). Their six-year-old daughter Alice was dancing in her Christmas angel outfit one minute and the next she was falling out of a tree. Jennie’s and Rob’s world just stopped. They raced Alice to hospital 125 kilometres away to find she had broken bones requiring a fortnight in hospital and months of constant care ahead. Missed work shifts to care for Alice meant little money. After a few weeks, there was barely any food.
