Wyndham’s Jurassic Park A $1.5 million dinosaur-themed park will be built in Truganina next year. Residents of Stockland’s Grandview estate, which will eventually become home to more than 1600 properties, will soon be able to see the one hectare park being constructed on Altezze Drive between Healey Drive and Bratan Way. The park is set to feature a climbable dinosaur head sculpture; a multi-storey play tower with dual-level slide arms landing on pads framed with featured claws, a climbable sculptural tail, dinosaur eggs with baby dinosaurs popping out, a flying fox, swings, a matrix climber and seesaws. Stockland Project Director Ed Krushka said: “This dinosaur inspired park will be the largest prehistoric-themed residential park space in Victoria, with the custom commissioned dinosaur head sculpture alone being 3.2m long.” He said the broader park would also include a 50 metre x 50 metre open grass kick-about area, open grassed areas for picnicking and exercising and a large picnic shelter area with barbecue facilities, drinking fountain and banquet-style settings. Mr Krushka said the park had been inspired by the history of the site and the nearby Mt Atkinson Conservation Reserve being a dormant volcano. Alesha Capone

Rates bungle angers Technical difficulties have been blamed for delays in the dispatch of council rates notices, meaning Wyndham ratepayers have until the end of the month to pay their second instalment. Hundreds of ratepayers received notices in the mail last week, with payment due in as little as three days later on November 30. The notices were issued on November 12. Wyndham council has said payments would be accepted until December 30 with no penalties.
Close to 400 residents took to social media last week dismayed about the short notice. “When I rang them, I was told that rates are still due by November 30 but if paid late, it won’t go into arrears,” a resident wrote. “It was [council’s] mistake that they had to reprint all of them, so we should get more time to pay.” “We got ours a couple of days before the due date, which we thought was strange,” another posted to a Wyndham community page. Wyndham resident Bro Sheffield-Brotherton called for improved communication from the
council. “While I am grateful to those councillors endeavouring to keep ratepayers informed, this is bureaucratic mismanagement and putting up a notice on the council website or dealing with people when they ring up with concerns is inadequate,” Mr Sheffield-Brotherton said. “I hope that due to this ‘technical issue’ with the printers, all ratepayers will be getting a notice from council … in as urgent a fashion as can be organised.” Council chief financial officer Binda Gokhale said residents had been notified about the delays
on council’s website and had been sent letters. “Due to a technical issue faced by our printing contractors, some of you may have received your second instalment rates notice later than usual,” a letter sent to ratepayers last week said. “We apologise for the delay and we are currently addressing the issue with the contractor.” Ms Gokhale advised that payment could be made by the end of this month without incurring any interest penalties. For information, contact Wyndham council rates department on 9742-0777.

Lots of lots in Wyndham By Alesha Capone The number of land sales in Wyndham during the September quarter of this year was the second-highest among the nation’s growth areas, according to a new report. RPM real estate group, a residential development sales, marketing and advisory agency, last week released its residential market review for between July and September. The report said Wyndham recorded 504 lot sales within the three-month period, which
accounted for 19 per cent of all lot sales in Australia’s growth areas. The Casey municipality in Melbourne’s south-east topped the list with 22 per cent of land sales (at 595 sales). The report showed the number of total lot sales across Melbourne and Geelong increased 48 per cent to 2657 for the September quarter, from the previous quarter. For Wyndham, the report stated: “Both demand (gross lot sales) and new lot supply in Wyndham are at parallel levels to 6 years ago
when the market was then also coming out of a downturn and entering a recovery phase.” The RPM review also said new releases of land in Wyndham rose 35 per cent to 479 lots, with this growth also aided by the addition of two new estates during the September quarter. “Although Wyndham contained a relatively high volume of unsold lots entering the September quarter, higher gross lot sales compared to new lot supply has applied some upward pressure on lot prices,” the review said. “The median lot value increased 2.8 per cent
from the previous quarter to $322,250 despite the median lot size remaining static at 400sqm, resulting in greater per sqm price growth.” RPM’s head of communities, Luke Kelly, said renewed confidence and increasing housing values in the established market was encouraging some buyers to sell their home and upgrade to a new house and land package. “This buyer cohort is supporting still prevalent first home buyers who comprise 68 per cent of owner occupier purchases, providing a more balanced land market,” Mr Kelly said.

Wyndham council has proposed allowing sports clubs to sublease their grounds to small business owners. The draft upgrade of the council’s Sports Facility User Guide 2020 – 2025 suggests that primary tenants of a sporting reserve could apply to include one or more small business physical activity providers, such as a yoga studio or personal trainer, within their seasonal allocation. The draft suggests it would “increase the breadth of activities available at a reserve to increase physical activity participation, forge stronger ties between community clubs and local small businesses and the networks they service and add an additional revenue/resourcing stream to improve the sustainability and viability of both groups”. Wyndham’s sports development portfolio holder, Cr Peter Maynard, said this would provide an opportunity for clubs to become fitness hubs and grow their numbers. “It is exciting to think that while supporters of the team may not be interested in actively participating in the particular sport, they will have a whole range of other sports or exercises offered by small business operators, such as yoga, athletics, or even personal training,” he said. “This will get more people engaged in physical activity and offer these fitness start-ups the chance to access an established network of clients.” The Sports Facility User Guide 2020 – 2025 is open for public consultation, see https://theloop.wyndham.vic.gov.au/ sportsfacilityuserguide

Four-storey cop shop build begins By Esther Lauaki The state-of-the-art Wyndham police hub is a step closer with construction starting on the new complex last week. The $45 million Wyndham Police Complex will be one of the largest Victoria Police facilities outside of Melbourne CBD, with accommodation for about 550 police members, support staff and partnering agency staff.
The complex will replace the existing Werribee station to support the growth of numbers in front line police and specialist officers being rolled out in the area. The four-storey building, once complete, will include environmentally sensitive design features, consultation spaces, open office areas and staff amenities for the use of partner agencies, residents and community groups. Construction is expected to be completed by
the end of 2020. Police Minister Lisa Neville said members “deserve the best facilities. “The new station will be critical to support our record boost to police numbers to keep our community safe, Ms Neville said. The complex is included in broader Wyndham Justice Precinct being developed as part of the Werribee National Employment and Innovation Cluster.
Werribee MP Tim Pallas said the precinct would provide integrated justice services for the Wyndham community aligning policing, court services, corrections, health, and council services. The police station is funded through the Labor government’s police station infrastructure program, which is replacing and upgrading dozens of police stations and residences across Victoria.
Man of the river hailed Werribee Riverkeeper John Forrester has been recognised with a Victorian Premier Volunteer Champions Award. Mr Forrester was presented with the award in the leadership category at Government House on Sunday. Mr Forrester, who joined the Werribee River Association in 1993, has previously served as the group’s secretary and president. He said that his award was “reflective of the work a lot of dedicated people do in waterways. “I’d like to thank all the volunteers in the Werribee River Association who work hard to improve the waterway, he said. Mr Forrester said that waterways across south-eastern Australia were “in trouble due to many issues, including climate change, logging, buildings being constructed too close to the water and reduced levels of native fish. “In addition, in recent years a plague of litter has hit our streets and waterways, he said. “We have literally picked tonnes of litter out of our waterways across the past few years. He said he believed governments and

developers did not always make the best decisions for the environment. “The majority of people in the community want cleaner waterways, less litter and container deposit legislation, Mr Forrester said. He said the Werribee River Association was always seeking new members and volunteers who were keen to help improve the health of local waterways. “We encourage the community to get on board with these issues, because if we don’t, who will? he said. The association will host a Christmas break-up on Friday, at level 1, 7 Bridge Street, Werribee, at 6.30pm. Business on road to ruin By Alesha Capone The owners of a Laverton North café say they fear they will be driven out of business because of road changes being planned as part of the state government’s $1.8 billion Western Roads Upgrade project. Richard Rennie and his partner Helen, who rent and operate Adams Café on Dohertys Road, said that many of their clients were drivers of large trucks, including B-doubles. Mr Rennie said that under plans to upgrade Dohertys Road, the driveway to enter and exit the café would be significantly reduced, meaning B-double drivers would not be able to access the café. He said that when he started at the business, the café’s driveway frontage measured about 75 metres, which gave trucks plenty of room to enter and exit. He said that with roadworks currently taking place, this frontage had been reduced to about 35 to 40 metres. Mr Rennie said that the roadworks, which had been taking place since 2017, had caused a “headache” for the café. “Prior to the roadworks, we were taking in about $1100 per day,” he said. “That’s now down to about $200 to $300 a day. “We’re really struggling and if this goes on much longer, we’ll be out of business.” Opposition Leader David Davis raised the café’s plight in state Parliament last month. He said that while the opposition supported upgrading roads, Mr Rennie and Helen were “in a terrible position”. “Clearly a six metre opening is not large enough for a B-double or a massive rig,” Mr Davis said. “This is effectively putting Helen and Richard out of business.”

Major Road Projects Victoria delivery director Steve Cornish said the authority “has a number of measures in place to help businesses prepare for potential impacts during construction and we will continue to work with Richard and Helen to minimise those impacts
as much as possible”. “After meeting with the owners of Adams Café, we completed an extensive review of our road design and found a solution that means trucks will still have good access to the café from the new roundabout,” he said.

Locking in parcel kiosks Stockland has announced it will become the first Australian property company to offer Amazon lockers at some of its retail centres, including in Point Cook. Stockland last week announced it would offer the secure, self-service kiosks for parcel pick-ups at a number of its retail locations in New South Wales and Victoria. Amazon Locker allows customers to pick up a mailed package at a convenient time, rather than having it delivered to a home or business address. Once a parcel is ready for pick-up, customers will receive an email, along with a barcode, to use to collect their package. Stockland Group executive and chief executive of commercial property Louise Mason said the company was proud to partner with Amazon. “It is integral that Australian shopping centres continue to evolve and adapt to retailer, customer and global demands,” she said. “This partnership with Amazon is another way we are curating our offering to what our customers really want. We view online shopping on platforms such as Amazon as an extension of what our retail town centres can provide customers. “Offering Amazon Locker in Stockland retail town centres provides greater convenience for our customers who are not home for the delivery of their purchase and ensures they can pick up,” she said.

Countdown to Christmas The countdown to Christmas is officially on, starting with the lighting of the tree in Werribee’s Station Place. Wyndham council’s Werribee Lights Up for Christmas event last Friday marked the beginning of community celebrations for the festive season. Tourism and major events portfolio holder John Gibbons said the evening’s free activities, included a visit from Santa and his elves, children’s crafts, gingerbread-making, and entertainment. Cr Gibbons said it was an opportunity for the community to celebrate the lighting of the
six-metre-tall Christmas tree and spend time together before the busy Christmas season began. The Werribee Lights Up event also marked the launch of Red Centre – this year’s major public art extravaganza in and around the Cultural Centre. Residents are encouraged to explore their neighbourhood this festive season and wander across to Wedge Street Piazza and see the display of wooden Christmas trees which were decorated by 10 local primary schools.

New rules for Watton Street By Esther Lauaki It is now illegal to turn into an angled park on the opposite side of Werribee’s main street. Double white lines run down the middle of Watton Street, putting an end to a long-time bugbear for motorists moving through the town centre. Wyndham council introduced the double white lines earlier this month because residents
‘‘

’’
raised concerns that crossing to Watton Street’s parking bays from the opposite side of the road was posing safety and congestion concerns. Safer communities portfolio holder
Kim McAliney said the change would reduce collisions and the back-up of traffic on the busy street. “The introduction of white lines means motorists are legally not permitted to cross to the other side of the road to access the angled parks and would face fines if this road rule is broken,” Cr McAliney said. “While it may seem convenient to cross oncoming traffic to secure a nearby parking
spot on Watton Street, the practice is actually quite dangerous and holds up traffic in our already busy city centre. “To grab that park on the other side of the road, motorists will need to use the roundabouts to make u-turns.” As part of these works, the double lane at the eastern end of Watton Street has been changed to one lane to improve safety for pedestrians crossing at the zebra crossings.
Big chop for charity A group of pupils from a Point Cook school will take part in a hair-raising charity event this week. On December 4, pupils Chloe, Marie, Nicolo, Olivia and Ziva from Stella Maris Catholic Primary School will have their long hair cut off. Their tresses will be donated to a program which makes wigs for people with cancer. The pupils have also been raising funds for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation in the lead-up to their big chop, and have so far raised more than $1500. Also on Wednesday, Stella Maris pupils will come to school with crazy hairdos, in exchange for a gold coin donation to the foundation. The fundraising idea was the brainchild of grade 4 pupil Nicolo, who said he was inspired by his older sister Camilla, who has previously cut off and donated her own hair. Grade 3 pupils Ziva, Marie and Olivia – and Olivia’s sister Chloe, who is in grade prep – said they decided to join in with Nicolo’s efforts. A mother from the school, Joseanne, will also have her cut as part of the event.
Each of them will have at least 25 centimetres of their hair cut off, to be donated to the wig program. “My Nonna has breast cancer and I want to help her and all the other people with cancer,” Marie said. Ziva said: “I want to help people, we are trying to make them brave.” See https://supportingpetermac. everydayhero.com/au/Stella to make a donation. Alesha Capone

Aircraft beacon crash warning By Alesha Capone Wyndham council is conducting additional inspections of aircraft warning beacons after one fell to the ground and almost hit a father in Point Cook last month. Jason, who asked for his surname to be withheld, told Star Weekly he was almost killed when he saw a beacon fall when waiting to pick up his children from school near the Alamanda oval pavilion and sports ground, about 3pm on November 20.
‘‘
I was lucky not to have been hit by the beacon
’’
- Jason “I was walking towards the oval when I heard a noise from the light tower closest to the pavilion, Jason said. “On looking up, I saw a large object falling. “I quickly stepped out of the way. Jason said the object, a flashing red beacon which is installed at the top of towers to warn
aircraft at night, smashed into the ground less than one metre away from him. “I was lucky not to have been hit by the beacon, if so I would have been seriously injured/killed, he said. Jason said children and other parents nearby ran from the broken beacon and smashed glass. “I would suggest that this light tower is inspected ASAP to make sure nothing else is loose and could fall, he said. Wyndham council’s acting director of city operations, Jenny McMahon, said the council
had determined that the beacon fell “due to extremely high winds and was an unusual and rare occurrence. “It was the first incident of its kind that we can recall, Ms McMahon said. “These beacons are inspected annually, however, we are conducting an additional inspection of all beacons due to this unforeseen incident. “This particular light was checked in February and the tower’s structure was checked in October. Both were determined to be safe.
His hams are sow good When it comes to bringing home the bacon, Andrew Vourvahakis is a champion. His business, Andrew’s Choice Smokehouse in Laverton North, has been recognised as one of Australia’s foremost pork producers. At the recent annual Australian PorkMark Ham Awards, the company placed first in the state – and second in the nation – for the “traditional bone-in category. The awards are run by Australian Pork Limited, a service body for the country’s pork industry. Mr Vourvahakis, who established Andrew’s Choice Smokehouse 13 years ago, said he felt overjoyed to receive the ham award. “I was excited, I was proud, I was honoured because it’s quite a big thing to win – you’re up against Australia’s best and the competition gets harder and harder every year, he said. Mr Vourvahakis said he believed the secret of his success was paying attention to small details.
His smokehouse – which only uses Australian pork – can produce up to a ton of sausages a day, or between 500 to 600 kilograms of ham. Mr Vourvahakis, who has been a butcher and smallgoods maker for 25 years, said he started in the industry as a child. His father Emmanouil was a partner at a Yarraville butcher, and at the age of 10, Mr Vourvahakis started out washing trays at the shop, standing on a milkcrate to reach the sink. “My dad never forced me to work, it was a labour of love – I think that’s why I followed in his footsteps, Mr Vourvahakis said. Sister act, with mum too For a Tarneit mother and her two daughters, acting is a family affair. Mala Singh-Narayan and her daughters, 16 year-old Shyla and 19 year-old Shanika attend ATA Acting Studio classes in Williamstown and Hoppers Crossing. The family said that when their acting coach Adam Turnbull started teaching nine years ago, they were among the first students to join his studio. Mrs Singh-Narayan, Shanika and Shyla will all perform in an ATA showcase next week. Mrs Singh-Narayan said that she was passionate about acting as a child, and started taking classes a couple of years after her daughters began. She said she enjoyed feeling the adrenaline just before going on stage.
Mrs Singh-Narayan last year starred in an episode of Neighbours, and has been in a WorkSafe Victoria advertisement and an AMP in-house corporate video. Shyla has appeared in advertisements for Priceline and Cricket Australia. “At first acting was a confidence-booster, and as Adam taught us more about the industry, it became more of a passion,” Shyla said. The ATA senior showcase will be held 7.30pm on Monday, December 9 at Altona Theatre. The junior showcase (ages 12 and under) will be held 7.30pm on Tuesday, December 10. Tickets available at the door: adults $25, children $20. Details: https://www.ataactingstudio.com/ Alesha Capone

Burglary rates revealed
Principal Moira Findlay (centre) with assistant principals Ray Burrell and Nella Cascone. (Damjan Janevski) 201529_01
Leaders say goodbye By Alesha Capone Iramoo Primary School in Wyndham Vale will soon bid a fond farewell to three of its leadership staff members. Principal Moira Findlay and assistant principals Ray Burrell and Nella Cascone, will all retire at the end of this year. Between them, the trio have notched up 130 years of combined experience with the Department of Education and Training, and have spent a total of 81 years at Iramoo. Ms Findlay started at the school as an
assistant principal in 1993. “I, personally, have enjoyed the kids and making a difference to them,” she said. “Some of the pupils come from really disadvantaged backgrounds and a good education can make a difference in their lives.” While the Department of Education and Training will choose Iramoo’s next principal, the staff members replacing Mr Burrell and Ms Cascone have already been working alongside them for a while. “We’re proud it will be a seamless transition,” Ms Findlay said.
The school will pay tribute to the three outgoing leaders at its Carols on the Green, to be held next week. A special farewell event will also be held next year, to which colleagues, parents and adult ex-students are invited. “We would really like it to be a celebration of the school, rather than any one of us in particular,” Ms Findlay said. The event will be held on March 12, from 4-7pm at the Werribee Racing Club Function and Events Centre. Cost: $20 per person, RSVP by March 1. Bookings 9741 2803 or tinyurl. com/iramoo-end-of-an-era.
Residents in Manor Lakes, Wyndham Vale and Mount Cottrell were at greater risk of a burglary than any other suburb in Wyndham, according to new figures. The RACV’s annual burglary statistics report revealed the burglary rate across the 3024 postcode was one in 80. In the postcode 3030, which takes in Quandong, Point Cook, Werribee and Werribee South, the rate was one in 105 homes. The postcode 3029, which includes Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit and Truganina, had a rate of one in 131 homes. The smaller township of Little River had a one in 54 rating. Burglaries and break-and-enters in Wyndham decreased substantially in the 12 month period to June, from 1334 to 1114 offences. RACV general manager business solutions Raymond Orre said Victorian’s perceptions of crime are symptomatic of wider concerns in their community. “Until crime rates are at zero, there is still reason for concern and more importantly, action,” Mr Orre said. “Positively, one in five people already believe that their neighbours look out for them, and in turn, they look out for their neighbours. “Notifying your neighbours when you’re out of the home and asking them to check your mail or put out your bins can be a helpful deterrent for criminals.” Esther Lauaki

Population heads to 500,000 By Esther Lauaki Wyndham’s population is expected to balloon past half a million people within the next 20 years, according to new forecasts. Figures released by forecast analysts .id, show that by 2040 Wyndham’s population will surge past half a million people, and by 2041 it will be 512,591. Wyndham mayor Josh Gilligan said this growth would only increase the need for governments to close the infrastructure and services gap between Wyndham and other areas.
“This is the first time ever that forecasts have shown Wyndham’s population will reach 500,000 people. That’s a growth of 88 per cent on today’s population,” Cr Gilligan said. “We are already growing at almost triple the rate of regional hubs Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo combined. Previously it was predicted that our population would reach 480,000 people by 2041. Now that data shows that we will hit that number three years earlier than expected. “This will make us almost as big as Tasmania is today, larger than Canberra and almost four times the size of Ballarat and Bendigo.
“This year alone there will be 4999 babies born in Wyndham, compared to 3075 in Geelong. “We simply can’t continue to grow at this rate without significant state and federal government investment in major infrastructure projects. “The federal government has already flagged the possibility of a North West City Deal … and, with a population that is growing so fast, Wyndham needs to be part of those discussions.” He said Wyndham had been feeling the sting of population growth for many years.
“We have the highest proportion of people in Victoria who spend two or more hours commuting to and from work,” Cr Gilligan said. “We need governments to work with us on creating a local transport network that reduces reliance on car travel, but also includes creating more carparks at local train stations. “Wyndham already needs the Victorian government to fund 10 new schools to cater for our existing population, and with the growth we’re experiencing we will only need more in the future. “We are focused on building a liveable city not just a big city,” he said.
Ready for a gouda day It’s time to cheese the day. The Fromage a Trois Cheese Festival will return to the grounds of Werribee Park on March 22. Artisan cheese producers and cheesemongers will participate in the day, and dishes including cheese platters, raclette, cannoli and arancini will be available. Handcrafted wine, beer, cider and spirits will also be sold, with festivalgoers encouraged to picnic on the lawns of the Werribee Park Mansion. Roving entertainment, lawn games and a live music line-up will feature on the day. Other activities will include master classes and demonstrations on stage, mozzarella stretching and cheese-inspired ice cream. Free shuttle buses will be running from Werribee and Wyndham Vale stations to the festival, and paid shuttle services will also be
available from Brunswick train station. The Wyndham council event is supported by major sponsor Pyrenees Wine Region. Limited Early Bird tickets to the festival are now available for $33, plus a booking fee, at http://www.melbournefoodandwine.com.au/ program/fromage-a-trois-cheese-festival-7242 Entry is free for children 14 and under, when they enter with a full-paying adult. Tickets are inclusive of entry, entertainment, samples and a take-home festival glass to use on the day. Concern over road toll By Alesha Capone Eight people have lost their lives on Wyndham’s roads so far this year. Figures from the RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council show that between January 1 and November 26, a driver, a vehicle passenger, a cyclist, two pedestrians and three motorcyclists died on the municipality’s roads. The fatalities occurred in suburbs including Point Cook, Wyndham Vale, Werribee, Hoppers Crossing, Mount Cottrell and Tarneit.

Once you become a statistic, there is no way of going back - Kim McAliney
’’
RoadSafe Westgate chairman Jim Giddings said that all of the community had a role to play in reducing road trauma, with speed being a contributing factor in many crashes. “Stay within the speed limit and drive to suit the conditions you face, he said. “Speeding affects both the risk of a crash happening and the severity of injuries sustained when a crash does happen. Mr Giddings said the work of his group supported initiatives such as operations carried out by the Westgate Highway Patrol. Sergeant Marty Wallace, from the Westgate Highway Patrol, said police were urging motorists to drive safely in the lead-up to the festive season. He said it was also important for drivers to keep an eye out for other road users, such as motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians. “The Westgate Highway Patrol encourages safe road use and driver behavior because our
Jim Giddings, Sergeant Marty Wallace and Cr Kim McAliney.
aim is to get everyone to where they are going for Christmas safely and home again, Sergeant Wallace said. Wyndham’s safer communities portfolio holder, Cr Kim McAliney – who is also a member of the RoadSafe Westgate committee – said three people had died on Wyndham’s roads since the start of November.

“Once you become a statistic, there is no way of going back, she said. “Apart from the fatalities and loss of life, every time there is an accident, the city comes to a halt – literally – and so we’re just asking people to take care. Report dangerous driver behaviour to triple-0, or call Crime Stoppers, 1800 333 000.

Skeleton Creek bridge open for business A new bridge over Skeleton Creek has been opened on Leakes Road in Truganina. Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly, who inspected the site last Monday, said the new bridge was a major milestone built as part of the state government’s $1.8 billion Western Roads Upgrade. Construction of the 44-metre-long bridge started earlier this year and required more than 1500 cubic metres of concrete and 270 tonnes of steel reinforcement. Ms Connolly said the new bridge formed part of the broader upgrade to Leakes Road and would allow traffic to flow more freely between Fitzgerald Road and Derrimut Road. Inbound and outbound traffic on Leakes Road is being diverted onto the new bridge, as work begins to rehabilitate and widen an existing bridge. Once the project is complete, there will be two lanes in each direction of Leakes Road over Skeleton Creek and a dedicated cycling and pedestrian path. More than 22,000 motorists travel on Leakes Road in Truganina every day. More than 18 intersections on Leakes Road are being upgraded as part of the Western Roads Upgrade, with new cycling and walking paths also being built.

Race to end rat run
Protest over crossing plans
By Goya Dmytryshchak Seabrook residents are in talks with Hobsons Bay council officers to stop motorists using Seabrook Boulevard as a rat run to dodge Point Cook Road traffic. Peter Gavaghan, who lives in a street running off Seabrook Boulevard, said motorists were using the thoroughfare to jump the queue in Point Cook Road during peak hours. “They come in onto Seabrook Boulevard from Point Cook Road between 8 o’clock and 9.30 in the morning to get round the traffic which is blocked at Point Cook Road, he said.
‘‘
... you’re actually pushing people back onto Point Cook Road - Peter Gavaghan
’’
“The traffic in Seabrook Boulevard will bank up as far as Kempton Court, which is where I live. “Now, the people from Kempton Court down towards Point Cook Road are angry because of people taking the shortcut. He said the council had proposed blocking Seabrook Boulevard near the middle where there is a pipeline reserve. Mr Gavaghan said this would make matters worse and has started a petition against the move. “The implications are that those of us who live just over that pipeline, as in Kempton Court, will then have to go south to join Point Cook Road, he said. “The bulk of Seabrook Boulevard is south of the pipeline. “It will mean that you’re actually pushing people back onto Point Cook Road. Hobsons Bay mayor Colleen Gates said the

council was lobbying to help the residents of Seabrook Boulevard, as well as Shane Avenue on the western side of Point Cook Road. “Seabrook Boulevard and Shane Avenue are continuously impacted by drivers who are rat-running to avoid the morning traffic peak on Point Cook Road, she said. “Despite council’s efforts over the past decade, including installing speed humps
and narrowing intersections, we continue to see ongoing conflicts, unsafe behaviour and amenity impact. “Council is trying to help our residents with these traffic issues, not make it worse. The more people from Seabrook Boulevard and Shane Avenue areas able to get involved, the better. Two community consultation sessions will be held in coming weeks.
Dozens of Wyndham residents took to state Parliament last week to protest plans for the removal of the area’s three level crossings. The small group, driven by the Wyndham Infrastructure Network, describe the state’s preferred designs for the removal of the two railway crossings at Werribee and Cherry streets and the third at Old Geelong Road as a “quick-fix. A revised design was recently adopted for the removal of the Cherry Street crossing which would involve a new road bridge being built east of the existing crossing to connect Tarneit Road and the Princes Highway. Cherry Street will then be closed permanently. Plans also include a well-lit, accessible pedestrian underpass to maintain pedestrian and cyclist access to homes and local shops. But the network seeks to “pause any construction on the Cherry Street project to explore the idea of a tunnel instead. Network spokeswoman Susan McRae said the group wanted the best options for Wyndham. “The whole idea is to retain some sort of beauty and create a space with the facilities that people bought into Werribee for, Ms McRae said. The group described the government’s designs as rushed and flawed. Major work on the Cherry Street project is expected to start next year. Esther Lauaki

No exit fee living popular with downsizers As house prices in Australia’s capital cities boom, many downsizers who are asset-rich but cash-poor, are missing out on an opportunity to unlock their existing home equity and improve their lifestyle. Author of Downsizing Made Simple, Rachel Lane, said everyone had the option of staying in their own home, but many found it to be too much maintenance or too lonely if they had lost a spouse. “A lot of people look at downsizing to either a land lease community or retirement village, however they are distinctively different and can be hard to compare. “The greatest confusion often comes from the exit fees. These are standard in retirement villages and are normally a percentage accrued over a period of time, typically between 25% and 40% but they can be anything between 0% and 100%, and there can be sharing in capital gains, renovations costs and selling fees to factor in as well. “Land lease communities have no government charges (stamp duty or council rates), and there are no exit fees, and with your ongoing cost of leasing the land being reduced through government assistance - it is a very popular and affordable housing option. Being part RI D OLNH PLQGHG FRPPXQLW\ VLJQLČ´ FDQWO\ enhances quality of life too,â€? Rachel said. Ingenia Lifestyle Lara’s unique land lease model provides downsizers the opportunity to purchase a brand new home with no exit/ DMF fees, no stamp duty fees and residents keep 100% of any capital gains.
Project Sales Manager, Dianna McGrath, said the community was designed to meet the demand from keen downsizers looking to LPSURYH WKHLU Č´ QDQFHV DQG WKHLU OLIHVW\OH “Homes at Ingenia Lifestyle Lara start from MXVW Č‚ WKLV LV VLJQLČ´ FDQWO\ ORZHU than the average price of homes in the same suburb, which average around $525,000, freeing up more equity for downsizers,â€? Dianna said. The popular lifestyle community has welcomed over 250 residents and is now selling into the last stage with an exciting range of brand new home designs.
“A major feature of the design has been the position of the homes, lower to the ground, with just one step up in the front and back and a zero-level transition from the garage to the house without steps. “This in addition to our resort-style facilities and location – in between Melbourne and Geelong – enables our residents to live their dream lifestyle and feel like they’re on holiday all year-round, “Whether you choose to lock up and leave to travel or embrace community events and activities, one thing is for sure, more happy days are ahead!

Calling all entrepreneurs The WYNnovation Festival will return next year, to give businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs the opportunity to network and learn. Throughout February 2020, attendees who attend WYNnovation events will also be able to hear first-hand from leading Australian businessmen and women. Wyndham’s future focused economy portfolio holder, Cr Walter Villagonzalo, said next year’s festival would include the inaugural WYNnovation Pitch Competition with $7000 in prize money up for grabs. “We’re calling all Wyndham businesses, start-ups, students and residents that have a great business or product idea to enter the WYNnovation Pitch Competition, which is proudly funded by Small Business Victoria,” Cr Villagonzalo said. “You might be a business start-up with a great idea, an existing business seeking to commercialise a new product or a budding entrepreneur with a new idea. “All you need to do is pitch your idea in a short video – a panel will then select participants to attend four workshop sessions and then a shortlisted group will be given the opportunity to participate in the Pitch Competition.” Cr Villagonzalo said that on February 7, a headline event named The Summit would feature the keynote speakers of Boost Juice founder Janine Allis, trend forecaster and author Michael McQueen and co-founder of Four Pillars Gin, Matt Jones. Entries for the WYNnovation Pitch Competition close at 5pm on December 8. Details: www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/ wynnovation-2020
Rail loop work begins The state government has released new details of a proposed underground rail project which would link Werribee and Wyndham Vale stations to the northern and south-eastern suburbs. The Suburban Rail Loop would be a twin-tunnel, stand-alone line, according to Premier Daniel Andrews and the Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan, who made the announcement last week. The 90-kilometre rail ring would link Werribee and Wyndham Vale with Sunshine station and the proposed Melbourne Airport station, before travelling on to Broadmeadows, Fawkner, Reservoir, Heidelberg, Box Hill, Glen Waverley, Clayton and Cheltenham, plus proposed new stations in Bundoora, Doncaster, Burwood and Monash. Mr Andrews said the new rail line, which would accomodate purpose-built trains, would “fully integrate into our public transport network and deliver ‘turn-up-and-go’ services”. The Age newspaper reported the cost of constructing the Urban Rail Loop could amount to $50 billion, but Mr Andrews has not yet said exactly what the project would cost. Pre-construction work on stage one of the Suburban Rail Loop, from Box Hill to Cheltenham, has started, with geotechnical drilling underway. Details: suburbanrailloop.vic.gov.au. Alesha Capone

Mercy hits benchmark targets By Esther Lauaki Wyndham patients have been waiting less time than ever before for elective surgery and urgent specialist appointments, new data shows. Hospital and ambulance performance data for the September quarter showed that Werribee Mercy Hospital provided operations for all of its Category 1 elective surgery patients within the benchmark 30 days. More than half of those were within 16 days – one day quicker than the year before. Werribee MP Tim Pallas thanked doctors,

nurses and paramedics for rising to meet record demand for services due to surges in the number of people attending hospitals driven by an unprecedented flu season. “Victoria’s hospitals and ambulance service have done a tremendous job keeping up their high levels of patient care – during our worst
flu season on record,” Mr Pallas said. Victoria’s flu season started early and hit hard with more than 66,000 laboratory-confirmed cases, meaning hospitals have had to treat far more patients than anticipated this winter. Wyndham ambulance response times continue to better the state average, with Code 1 ambulances arriving in an average 11 minutes 7 seconds – better than the statewide result of 11 minutes 19 seconds. Wyndham ambulances responded to 2456 Code 1 calls in the three months, up on the 2070 call-outs a year earlier.
About 85 per cent of local ambulances arrived within 15 minutes, compared to the state result of 83.3 per cent. Across Victoria, performance data showed hospitals saw 474,175 patients in emergency departments during the September quarter. All category 1 patients were treated immediately upon arrival. Despite the additional pressure on hospitals, elective surgery patients also received their operations quicker than ever before – with more than half of all elective patients receiving their operations within 26 days.
Lessons without lectures Tarneit’s Baden Powell College students learned about the dangers of underage drinking as part of a travelling theatre program. The Smashed Project, run by educational theatre company Gibber Australia, was performed for year 8 and 9 students last month as part of the show’s national tour which aims to reduce alcohol-related harm in young people. Gibber Australia chief executive Tim Watt said the interactive production was an effective way to engage teens on the risks of alcohol misuse by bringing the topic to life in a dynamic, credible way. “The results are clear that students and the teaching staff are responding well to our fun, interactive yet educational style of the program,” Mr Watt said. “Young people in this age group don’t respond well to being lectured and value having open and honest conversations about drinking
and how this can impact their physical and mental wellbeing.” The Smashed Project is on tour at Victorian secondary schools until December 20. Details: wearegibber.com/schools/breakingunderage-drinking/ Esther Lauaki

10 years of memories By Alesha Capone A Point Cook school is celebrating a special anniversary this week. Point Cook P-9 College is marking its 10th anniversary with a display of photos and memorabilia showcasing the past decade. The college’s EAL and community partnerships leader Rebecca Thornton said the school originally opened in 1923, as the Point Cook Primary School at the RAAF Williams Base. “The school was initially developed to
provide education for the children of RAAF families living on the base, but also accepted enrolments from local Werribee South residents,” Ms Thornton said. “In 2010, Point Cook Prep-9 College opened its door as a relocation of Point Cook Primary School. “Approximately 800 students were welcomed in a newly designed, state-of-the-art, 21st century facility.” Ms Thornton said the school’s student population had almost doubled since then. “Now teaching nearly 1600 students in our
ever-growing community, our college includes many unique features and niche programs such as our own wetlands, an award-winning Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden and our Full Cycle Bike Restoration Program,” she said. “We are proud to be a very multicultural school, with our families speaking over 60 languages other than English in their homes.” Past students, teachers, families and the community are invited to view the school’s photo and memorabilia display this week, from 8-9am and 2-4pm weekdays. A park in the heart of Werribee is shaping up to be one of the best in the western suburbs with an 11-metre tower at its centre. Wyndham family friendly portfolio holder Mia Shaw said the adventure play area of Wyndham Park, to the north of the Werribee River, was bound to be a hit with locals. “We have a massive 11-metre play tower now installed, with a brilliant slide, climbing frame, swings, a flying fox and more,” Cr Shaw said. “I know I’m definitely looking forward to taking my son Gus to the playground once it opens to have a bit of a play.” Cr Shaw said the nature play area, which encourages children to play outdoors and embrace natural surroundings, was also progressing well. “This section of the park will feature a cubby house amongst the trees, climbing frames, a sandpit and a really fun waterplay section – a great maze of waterways where kids can control the flow of the water with switches, gates, and a water wheel,” she said. “Named Ebb and Flow, the artwork reflects the history and natural environment of Wyndham Park by engaging with the backbone of our community – the Werribee River.” Cr Shaw said thprogressing well, and on track for an early 2020 completion. Researcher honoured By Esther Lauaki A Wyndham professor has been named one of the world’s most significant researchers for her 25 years of work on cancer-fighting vaccines. She said her grandfather’s early death from a brain tumour prompted her interest in researching cancer at university. Her notable contributions to medicine include developing the world’s first breast and ovarian cancer vaccine in the 1990s and she was also instrumental in the creation of a vaccine against multiple sclerosis. The Victoria University professor said she hoped the vaccines she developed, currently in the commercialisation phase, would be routinely administered to patients fighting cancer. “We are getting closer all the time to finding viable, achievable ways to fight cancer and other diseases,” Ms Apostolopoulos said. She described her work as “platform technology” that would offer hope in treating and preventing pancreatic, colon, and lung cancer, as well as multiple sclerosis. Young student’s wonderful word By Alesha Capone Young Disha has a way with words. The seven-year-old, who is in grade 2 at Truganina P-9 College, is one of eight winners in the annual Oxford Australian Children’s Word of the Year writing competition. The competition attracted more than 400 submissions. The annual event, run by Oxford University Press Australia and New Zealand, invited primary school pupils across the nation to submit a piece of writing, of up to 500 words,
about their ‘Word of the Year’. For her entry, Disha chose the word “adaptability”. Disha said she chose the word because she has needed to adapt to many different situations in her life, including living in different places. “I was born in Singapore, then we moved to Inida, then we moved to Sydney, and now we live in Melbourne,” she said. Disha said she decided to enter the writing competition after her mother Himathri told her about it. “At first I was very confused about what to
write about, but then I asked my mum if I could write about something in my life,” she said. Disha said she was “very, very excited and happy” to be selected as one of the winners. She received a certificate and two books, including a dictionary, as a prize. Disha said reading and writing were her two favourite subjects at school, and that she would like to become a police officer in the future. Hair to help others A hairdressing program run by Uniting Wyndham is helping vulnerable people to look and feel their best. As part of the program, hairdressers volunteer to cut the hair of Uniting Wyndham clients. The service runs once a fortnight in a meeting room of the Uniting Wyndham office in Duncans Road, Werribee. Qualified hairdressers Jane Worthy and Jemma Jones have been volunteering with the program for several months, while a third qualified hairdresser, Nisha Barot, is in training for the program. Ms Worthy and Ms Jones said that participating in the program gave them an extra outlet to practice their skills. “It helps us, and it helps everybody in the community as well,” Ms Jones said. Ms Worthy said that she started volunteering for the program out of a desire to give back to
the community. “We get just as much as out of it, as the community does,” she said. In one session, the volunteer hairdressers can see up to 16 clients. The 15-minute appointments involve haircutting only (no hair-washing or colouring) and can be made through Uniting Wyndham’s reception, on 9742 6452. Appointments are available between 9.30am to 1.30pm every second Monday. Uniting Wyndham has volunteer roles for drivers, hairdressers, its food relief service and opportunity shop. Sunset safari experience Werribee Open Range Zoo is taking visitors on safari to continue their fight against rhino extinction. The Sunset Safari wildlife experience, on now at the zoo until next March, is “a celebration of conservation success” with proceeds from last year’s initiative contributing to the care of 29 critically-endangered black and white rhinos through the Rhino Fund Uganda. Visitors tour the Savannah enclosure at sunset with an experienced guide to see the zoo’s southern white rhinos Kipenzi, Letaba, Si Si and Kifaru – the zoo’s newest member of the breeding program. Herds of giraffe, zebra and eland also roam
the plains each evening. Zoo director Glen Holland said Sunset Safari offers a unique opportunity to see the zoo and its wildlife at the most exciting time of the day. “This is a completely authentic wildlife and cultural experience; you can’t get closer to an African Safari without buying a plane ticket,” Mr Holland said. Werribee Open Range Zoo has been involved in the care of southern white rhinos for more than 30 years and supports Zoos Victoria’s international partnership with Rhino Fund Uganda. The nine-day festival to be held next March will be called the Weerama or Weerama Festival, following a meeting of the co-ordinating committee last week. The name was selected from more than 50 entries in a competition through the ‘Banner’ to find a suitable name for the festival in which the aim is to promote fun, fitness and enjoyment.
Werribee youths could face jail sentences if they are caught pouring oil onto roads in the municipality to do burnouts. The warning comes with the launch of the Werribee Traffic Operations Group summer police blitz which aims to take the louts off the street during the coming summer break.
Wyndham could be a big winner in the lead-up to the Melbourne Commonwealth games, with eight local sporting facilities in the running for use as training venues. The venues are among 49 from across Melbourne’s west contained in a preliminary list of potential sporting facilities received by the organising committee for the games, to be held in 2006.
A united push to establish a trade training centre in Wyndham has taken a major step forward. It aims to address the region’s skills shortage and meet continuing growth.

MY WYNDHAM Joanna Jackson has been taking big strides towards better health. The life-long Werribee resident talks to Esther Lauaki.
How long have you lived in the area? Forty-seven years. What are you passionate about?
What other hats do you wear in the Wyndham community? Teaching keeps me very busy. I also play footy for Werribee Centrals Football Club and I’m a member at Ultimate You Hoppers Crossing.
I’m passionate about children’s education. I’m a teacher at Altona North Primary School now. I started my education at St Andrews Primary School, then attended MacKillop College and later ended up teaching at St Andrews Primary School too.
What’s the quirkiest thing about you?
You have been on a weight loss journey this year. Tell us briefly about what you have been doing.
The people. Growing up with so many people who have stayed in the area and who I’m still friends with 40 plus years on. My parents only recently moved out of the house that I grew up in. I love the multiculturalism of Wyndham. I love all the restaurants and how everyone is still friendly as they ever were.
I was sleeping a lot and I thought to myself, “I’m not doing really well”. I was finding it hard to get motivated for work and I had also been playing footy and got injured last year. I really wanted to get fitter and make a change so that I could play again next year. I started in September with Ultimate You in Hoppers Crossing and did a weight loss challenge with the aim of losing nine kilograms in six weeks. What has been the biggest change?
Other people would say my hair I guess. I don’t see it when I look in the mirror, it’s just me. What do you love about Wyndham?
(Esther Lauaki) 201814_01
I’ve lived in Wyndham all my life. Born and bred. I’ve only lived in three houses for as long as I’ve lived in Werribee and I currently live in Werribee South.
On the scales, I’ve lost about eight kilograms through healthy eating and regular exercise. I’m down about three dress sizes – that’s been quite an expensive change having to buy a new wardrobe.
What’s the biggest change that you have seen in Wyndham over the years? Traffic is the main issue in the area. It used to take me 25 minutes to drive into the city years ago, now it can take about 25 minutes just to get to Hoppers Crossing.

Lifeguards for summer By Goya Dmytryshchak Traders and community groups have funded two full-time lifeguards at Altona beach as a report released on Sunday revealed Victoria’s worst drowning toll in two decades. Altona lifesaving volunteers, who usually patrol on weekends and public holidays in summer, rescued five people, treated 100 first aid cases and undertook 123 preventative actions in the past financial year. Altona Village Traders Association initiated the move to employ two lifeguards for a month after Christmas, with financial support from Rotary Club of Altona, Lions Club of Altona, Altona Bowling Club, Altona RSL, Altona Community Bank and Altona Sports Club. “With tongue firmly in cheek, we are referring to ourselves as the ‘Magnificent Seven’,” traders’ president Kim Walsh said. “Altona beach, over the last five or six years, has just become more and more popular. “It’s not just our locals … with the outlying suburbs – Point Cook, Tarneit, Truganina – people are coming in droves because there’s only the two beaches in the western suburbs, Williamstown and Altona. “As part of our summer safety program that we run each year with Victoria Police and Hobsons Bay council, we decided there was another aspect to safety that needed to be looked at. “Whilst Altona Lifesaving Club do an amazing job … during the week we could get a 35 degree day and our beach is chock-a-block and sadly there’s no lifesaving members on patrol.” The Magnificent Seven raised about $15,000 to employ two lifeguards – Altona Lifesaving Club volunteers Tom Curran and Jake Davidson – through Life Saving Victoria.

Life Saving Victoria’s Drowning Report for 2018-19, released on Sunday, showed there were 157 drowning incidents in Victoria last financial year (56 fatal and 101 non-fatal), up from 107 (40 fatal and 67 non-fatal) the previous year. LSV lifeguards operations manager Briana Newson said it was fantastic to have the support of the Altona traders to provide lifeguard patrols at Altona beach over summer.
“In addition to the patrols delivered by our lifesaving volunteers on weekends and public holidays, this support will enable lifeguards to be on patrol from 11am-7pm weekdays, commencing on Boxing Day and running though until Australia Day,” she said. “We encourage beachgoers to be aware of and prepared for the beach conditions and to swim between the red and yellow flags – if our lifeguards can’t see you, they can’t save you.”
OBrien Real Estate Werribee celebrated with a special event at its Synnot Street offices on Friday. The real estate business, which recently rebranded, marked the occasion with staff, clients, friends, family, the OBrien corporate team and directors from other OBrien offices. About 15 staff members are based at the OBrien office in Werribee. OBrien Real Estate Werribee director Rohan Smith said he and the other staff members had enjoyed the support they had received from clients and the OBrien corporate team since re-branding in September this year. “It’s not just their systems and policies, but we’re also rapt to be part of their world-class training for property management sales,” he said.

Active Audiology listens to customers In a world where large corporations are gobbling up smaller businesses, Active Audiology in Altona is proudly flying the flag for independence, refusing to surrender its autonomy and ability to deliver a hearing service by expert professionals in the field.Cris Ivanidis, audiologist of 20 years standing and owner of Active Audiology for the past eight, believes these big companies are actually undermining the hearing profession. “We’re seeing more and more companies, with no traditional affiliation with the hearing profession, now offering people diverse services within the health sector, with hearing facilities ‘tacked on’,” he says.

Crusade for perfection By Lance Jenkinson Western Crusaders are a wrecking crew in the Gridiron Victoria competition. The Crusaders have qualified for a fourth straight Vic Bowl and will be seeking a third consecutive title. Not since the 2016 Vic Bowl have the Crusaders been beaten. The Craig Wilson-coached team is looking to make it three seasons undefeated when they face Monash Warriors in the 2019 Vic Bowl at Casey Fields on Sunday. “We’re through, so that’s exciting, Wilson said. “If we win this one, it will be three undefeated seasons in a row, which is pretty special. Western Crusaders showed no mercy in a 54-6 beatdown of Croydon Rangers in the preliminary final at Henry Turner Reserve on Saturday. The Crusaders have been ruthless both offensively and defensively with numbers statistically better than the previous two seasons. No matter how good the Cru have been this season, it will count for little when the coin is tossed before the Vic Bowl. “We’ve got a big week of work ahead of us to make sure we’re ready to go, Wilson said. “We’ll be looking at the film, we’ll be training and we’ll make sure we’re mentally and physically in top condition. “The Warriors are a team that’s been to the big dance a lot of times in the past. “They’ve got a lot of players that know how to win the big games too. “You’ve got to do everything you can and leave nothing unsaid or undone if you’re going to win these big games. Western Crusaders have the right mix to

climb to the top of the mountain again. The Crusaders have enough experienced campaigners to guide the youngsters and enough youngsters to keep enthusiasm levels high. They also have a quarterback in Ryan Deal who is in top form. Deal played a starring role in the Cru’s win over Croydon. “He had a high completion percentage, Wilson said. “He throws the short ball well, he throws the
targets for the Crusaders. Simeon Tuilagi was brilliant defensively and brought the crowd to life with a pick-six. Western Crusaders will have three teams involved on Vic Bowl day. The Crusaders women’s team won through to the decider on Sunday with a 27-6 win over Croydon. The under 19s also advanced to the big dance with a 28-8 win over Casey Spartans.

United to weather storm By Lance Jenkinson Western United coach Mark Rudan intends to ride out of the storm. For the first time, United has struck a form slump in the A-League, sliding to a third straight defeat in a 2-0 loss to champions Sydney FC at GMHBA Stadium on Sunday. At the crux of the problem for United is its lack of cutting edge, failing to register a goal during the losing streak despite a bevy of chances. As Rudan points out, it has not been through a lack of enterprise, with United out-shooting their opponents 63-31 over the past three matches. Rudan has steadfastly ruled out any changes to United’s approach while they are creating so many advancements into the opposition penalty area. “Our philosophy is our philosophy and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with the way we play, he said. “We’re not a counter attacking side, that’s not us, that’s not our belief, that’s not my belief, that’s not my style. “We’ll continue to push forward. “I’m also not someone that goes and panics. “The definition of that is changing our formation. This time it was Western United’s poor final ball into the strikers that was costly. The lack of quality was partly due to Sydney FC’s rock solid defence, a lack of patience and quality from the United wingers and a loss of hunger from the front line to present in

dangerous positions. United had some chances, but they mostly came when Sydney FC began to sit back and absorb pressure while holding a two-goal advantage. While Rudan will not be changing Western United’s style, he has not ruled out making personnel changes. There are strong calls for attacking midfielder Max Burgess to be brought into the starting line-up after some stellar play as a substitute. “He’s making it harder for me to leave him out, Rudan said. The biggest call in the lead-up to the derby will be whether Besart Berisha comes back into the starting line up after surrendering his spot to Kwabena Appiah-Kubi. Appiah-Kubi was ineffective as a starter, leading to Berisha’s insertion for the second half. Rudan confirmed that Berisha was not removed from the starting line up for the stare off between the player and coach a week earlier. “It was purely tactical this week, Rudan said. Young striker Valentino Yuel, who starred for United in the pre-season, has returned to training following his ankle surgery. Yuel could be a solution to United’s recent goal scoring woes, but he is yet to receive the green light for a return to action. Western United’s upcoming clash with Melbourne Victory at GMHBA Stadium on Sunday at 4pm is huge for two at-the-crossroads teams. With the weather forecast predicting a perfect day and the game of utmost importance for two middle tier teams, United should be able to attract its biggest crowd to a home game this season.

Rookie draft comfort for Jets By Lance Jenkinson With no knock-it-out-of-the-park elite first rounders, it was a tedious AFL draft period for the Western Jets. There was not a lot of movement on AFL lists this year with teams preferring to stand pat rather than delve deep into the draft pool. Last year, 78 players were taken in the AFL national draft, but only 65 were taken this year, leaving players on the fringe to keep their fingers crossed for selection at the rookie draft. For the first time since 2015, the Jets had no players taken in the national draft, but eventually had two chosen in the rookie draft. Livewire forward Josh Honey was the first Jet off the board, taken by Carlton with pick three. Key position player Emerson Jeka was later snapped up by Hawthorn with pick nine. Surprisingly, there was no place on an AFL list for Darcy Cassar, the highest rated Jets player heading into draft week. Jets football operations manager Matthew Dervan said it was not the end of the road for those who missed out. “If you look at the dynamics, there was 65 taken in the national draft from around 400 to 500 players nominated, so it’s a very slim pool that actually get selected, Dervan said. “While it was disappointing for those boys missing out, I guess the famous saying is that it’s not the be all end all. “The rookie draft provided a bit of comfort to Josh and Emerson getting picked up by Carlton and Hawthorn. “We thought Darcy was our best chance, but unfortunately it wasn’t to be for him, so we’ll look to hopefully get him at least involved with an AFL club with training in some capacity. “The biggest thing for all the nominees that missed out and we’re seeing now over the past

few drafts is the rise of the mature aged recruits. “There’s more opportunity in the state league now and it’s a credit to the pathway that’s being provided by our state league clubs. Honey will get to grow in a Carlton system
that has prioritised youth in recent seasons. The 18-year-old from Keilor is a dynamic medium sized forward with good burst away from the packs, an eye for goal and a willingness to defend.
“They’re really developing a great culture under David Teague that he’ll really enjoy and thrive in, Dervan said. “Eddie Betts has returned to the club, but there’s also a good developing group of small to medium sized forwards and midfielders at Carlton now. “He’s got a really good base to work off in terms of players in a similar position at Carlton. Jeka has the potential to be the steal of draft week. The 18-year-old from Altona Juniors was invited to the national draft on the assumption that a club would select him, but he left the room disappointed on Thursday night. It was not long before Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson and former Jet-turned-Hawk James Sicily was on Jeka’s doorstep presenting him with a Hawks jumper. Dervan would put no ceiling on Jeka’s potential in the big league because of his unique traits. “A 197 centimetre key position player, that’s versatile, can play at both ends of the ground, they certainly don’t grow on trees, Dervan said. “He’s got some really good experienced coaches who are going to aid his development and I think next year you’ll see him feature in a lot of Box Hill Hawks games and that’s all part of the development and the learning process working in an AFL system. Meanwhile, Werribee forward Jake Riccardi will call GWS Giants home after he was taken with pick 51 in the national draft, while Williamstown midfielder Mitch Hibberd will have a second chance in the AFL system with Essendon, who took him with pick 10 in the rookie draft. Cats ready to rumble
Sports shorts Baseball Melbourne Aces completed a four-game sweep over Auckland Tuatara in the Australian Baseball League on Sunday. The Aces made it six straight wins overall when they came from behind to claim game four 5-4 with two runs in the ninth inning. The Jon Deeble-coached Aces will turn their attention to a blockbuster four-game series with Perth Heat at the Melbourne Ballpark, starting on Friday and running through to Sunday. In Baseball Victoria summer league division 2, Werribee Giants mauled St Kilda Saints 11-0.
By Lance Jenkinson Hoppers Crossing is ready to lock horns with one of the big boys of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association. The Cats are aiming to be the first team to bring down the undefeated Altona in a mouth-watering western suburbs derby in a two-day game at JK Grant Reserve starting on Saturday. Having won three of their past four matches, the Cats will go into the match full of confidence. Cats captain Justin Goegan said his side is keen to make the most of a batsmen-friendly deck. “We’ve got the batting line-up that can post big totals,” he said. “They’ve got a good wicket, so there shouldn’t be any excuses.” Hoppers Crossing enjoyed a convincing five-wicket win over Balwyn at Hogans Road Reserve on Saturday. Outside of Nick Crawford, who anchored the Balwyn innings with 82, the Cats bowlers were far too good. Cats medium pacer Navrojdeep Virk capped a stunning week with the ball, taking 4-35. He bowled the Cats to victory in a Twenty20 game mid-week with 4-5 off two overs. “He’s got a fair few change-ups,” Goegan said. “He’s pretty hard to attack towards the end of the day.” It was a fairly consistent bowling performance from Hoppers Crossing with Brett Smith the best of the rest with 2-30. But Goegan still yearns for more from his attack, who conceded 8-182 to Balwyn off 45 overs. “I’m probably a little bit harsh because I think we can do a lot better,” he said. There were no qualms for Hoppers Crossing
Cricket Jacob Russell played a starring role in Werribee Centrals’ 15-run victory over Laverton in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 2. With the Centurions trying to defend a small total of 133, Russell produced a stellar bowling display with 5-26 to have Laverton all out for 118. In division 3, Point Cook chased down a target of 150 against Sydenham-Hillside. Seabrook lost by four wickets to Pascoe Vale Central.
Bowls Werribee defeated Whittlesea 72-66 in their Bowls Victoria division 1 clash. Fifth-placed Werribee returns home to take on premiership contender Sunbury at the Bee Hive on Saturday.

with the bat. The Cats got an across-the-board contribution to pass the target five down with 14 balls to spare. Cameron Nicol (25), Virk (26), Sanka Abeyruwn (24), Trent Said (37) and Smith (33no) all made significant contributions.
Meanwhile, Werribee had that bitter taste of defeat for the first time this season. The Tigers made 229 to fall short of Mount Waverley’s 5-233 by four runs in a thriller. Werribee will make the trip to Taylors Lakes for a two-dayer starting on Saturday.
