Message from the Premier & Minister to respond. These Victorians do an incredible job in keeping our state safe. But they can’t do it alone. We all have a responsibility to plan and prepare for fire. The Hon Daniel Andrews MP

The Hon Lisa Neville MP

Premier of Victoria

Minister for Police and Emergency Services

Our emergency services are ready for a long, hot and dry fire season.

Whether you’re in the bush, near the beach, close to grassland or paddocks, you need to prepare now.

A record fleet of 50 aircraft and thousands of volunteers and career firefighters are ready

There are some simple steps you can take straight away to stay safe this fire season.

Make a fire plan and know your trigger to enact it. Talk to your loved ones and make sure they know the plan too. Know where you’ll get your emergency information from and have your emergency kit ready to go. And for more information on how to prepare, visit vic.gov.au/knowfire. Taking the right steps now could make all the difference.

Phil Savage, Forrest Fire Management Officer for FFMVictoria and Tony Owen, CFA District 22 operations manager with a Kestrel water bomber.

The real fire alert begins now. Towns and shires in CFA District 22 officially moved into their Fire Danger Period on October 28 – and stay there until May 1 in 2020 unless otherwise updated. District 22 Operations Manager Tony Owen said low winter rainfall across the Goulburn – from Cobram on the Murray through the high country and down to Benalla – meant the grass and bush were dry. “The fire potential is further increased by Bureau of Meteorology forecasts that the next three months will be drier and warmer than average. “What little rain we have had has given good grass growth on roadsides and unmanaged areas, so we have good fuels in place

with the potential of a busy grassfire season. “While we and our partner agencies are doing everything we can to prepare for the bushfire season, we look to the community to use common sense and take responsibility for preventing fires.” He also urged north-east residents to use the short window of opportunity left before summer arrives to clean up their property if they had not already done so. “Reducing fuel loads now will ensure that if a fire does break out, it has less chance of taking hold or spreading.” Moira Shire is also urging residents to prepare their homes and yards. Shire mayor Libro Mustica said council officers have been

undertaking a rigorous annual program of roadside maintenance and inspections which plays a vital role in preparing for the 2019/20 fire danger period. “We work closely with the CFA, Victoria Police and DELWP to assess levels of risk and co-ordinate our mitigation works. “Our role is to support emergency services in any critical situation and we then share this information with the community through our various communication networks. “We want to ensure that if there is an emergency situation, people are informed and able to leave an affected area quickly and safely.”

New stripes at the zoo

(Supplied)

Werribee Open Range Zoo has a new “golden” child. Zari, the first zebra born at the zoo in 17 years, was welcomed by parents Zaide and Melako in the early hours of November 2. The young female was named Zari – an African-inspired name that means golden. Savannah keeper Lauren Irving said the youngster will share her home with giraffe, rhinoceros, eland, ostrich and Scimitar-horned oryx. “It’s so great to see a little zebra running around on the Savannah,” Ms Irving said. “Zari is extremely curious and has introduced herself to all the other species, including eland and rhino.” Baby zebra walk on wobbly legs within 20 minutes of being born and can run with the herd after an hour. They also spend the first few days of their lives learning their mother’s smell, stripe pattern and voice. “Zari has certainly found her feet,” Ms Irving said. “The little filly has been running around and bucking in the rain, having an excellent time. “Zaide is an excellent mother and is keeping her new foal nice and close. Mum and Zari are always side by side.” Zoo members and visitors can meet Zari while on the Safari Bus, free with entry. Esther Lauaki

Road frustration grows Hundreds of people fed up with congestion and safety issues on Point Cook Road have signed a petition calling for action. Point Cook man Justin Menzel started the Change.org petition on November 13, which has since been signed by more than 1870 people. “My primary motivation was to highlight a very important local issue, prompt the government to act and ultimately ensure the safety of our community,” Mr Menzel said. He said that due to poor planning and rapid population growth, the “incredible traffic

congestion” on Point Cook Road often involved a commute of 45 minutes or more “resulting in driver frustration, risk-taking and anti-social behavior”. “At peak times the commute can take 10 minutes to travel just one kilometre,” Mr Menzel said. “I leave home at 6.10am and it can take me 20-25 minutes to navigate my way to Aircraft train station, often taking detours down side streets like Jamieson Way and Seabrook Boulevard. “The inadequate nature of Point Cook Road has been known for decades and despite 60,000

people now calling Point Cook home and population expected to grow and congestion increasing, there’s still no plan in sight.” He said potential solutions to Point Cook Road could include duplication in both directions or a traffic flow management system for at least three lanes; dedicated bus lanes; a train station for Point Cook; improved access on and off the Princess Freeway and traffic lights at “major black spot intersections” such as Sneydes Road. Hobsons Bay council said it was aware of the petition, but that Point Cook Road was the responsibility of VicRoads and the

Department of Transport. A Department of Transport spokesperson said: “We continue to work closely with our road safety partners, Wyndham City Council and Hobsons Bay council to improve traffic flow and safety along the Point Cook Road corridor.” A state government spokesperson said: “We’ve recently finished resurfacing Point Cook Road to make it safer and more reliable and we’re widening Dunnings Road, Palmers Road and the Forsyth Road overpass to make it easier for locals to get to where they need to go.” See http://chng.it/WLqW65sZ to sign the petition.

Warning on possible dog baiting By Alesha Capone A Wyndham vet has warned dog owners to remain vigilant while walking their pets along Skeleton Creek, after a potential case of poisoning with snail bait occurred in the area. Veterinarian Dr Karen Davies, from Direct Vet Services in Point Cook, said that a family brought their Labrador retriever to the clinic on November 17 following a walk near the creek, in the vicinity of Bellbridge Drive and Angela Drive.

‘‘

It is most likely that it was snail bait

’’

- Karen Davies

Dr Davies said the otherwise-healthy dog began experiencing a “severe episode” of vomiting and diarrhea shortly after his walk. She said that the dog’s vomit was a particular shade of blue, which vets associated with snail bait.

“There really are not many products with blue dye in them in which the distinct colour is distributed so evenly through the gastric product,” she said. “It is most likely that it was snail bait.” Dr Davies said she could not say for sure that someone had placed snail bait along Skeleton Creek in an attempt to poison dogs. She said it was possible the Labrador could have eaten the bait after it was sprinkled in a private garden near the waterway. “But if the dog head eaten more of it, we

would expect to see full body, grand mal seizures (loss of consciousness and violent muscle contractions) and potentially even death,” she said. Dr Davies said she contacted other vet clinics in Wyndham to warn them about the possible baiting. She said no other vets had reported a similar case. She said that the Labrador had made a full recovery after falling ill. “He’s fine, he’s had no other symptoms,” she said. Wyndham council was contacted for comment.

Curtain call for historic park play

12431193-SG47-19

The historic Down to Earth show at Werribee Park had its final curtain call last weekend. Essence Productions theatre company wrapped up a decade long season of the interactive roaming play which entertained and educated visitors about a dark history of the park when it was Werribee Farm. Set in 1862, Down to Earth is based on farm life in rural Victoria when Werribee Park was owned by wealthy Chirnside brothers, Thomas and Andrew. Wool was the sole industry and the farm employed about 300 workers – played

by audience members of the show. Director Alaine Beek said the production had outgrown the performance space. “The homestead is the central part of Down to Earth and over the years a lot of groups now use the same space,” Ms Beek said. “We physically don’t have the space for an audience.” She said audience numbers had also waned. “The feedback was incredible but the numbers were small,” she said. “At times we weren’t covering costs.

FAMILY LAW & CONVEYANCING ...seek sound advice from Werribee’s longest established legal practice...

“That’s the reality of shows like this, they need audience support to carry on being viable. “We didn’t take this decision lightly … We put a lot of energy into it. “What we loved about doing the show was that we researched early farm life in Werribee and told it in a way that was fun and scary.” Ms Beek said the company would continue working on new productions and new stories to perform at Hastie’s cottage at Werribee Park.

The opening of a manufacturing business in Truganina is expected to create 100 new jobs. Ticket, tag and label manufacturer TMA Group will relocate its main ticket operations from New South Wales to Truganina. The new production, design and logistics centre at Truganina is expected to create 100 jobs by 2022. TMA produces stock for companies including Ticketmaster, Ticketek, Qantas, Westfield, Coles and Australia Post and specialises in state-of-the-art security features such as holographic foils, trust seals and invisible fluorescent inks. The company also creates ticket apps, soft ware and machinery for a range of industries across Australia, New Zealand and the Asia-Pacific. Minister for Jobs, Innovation and Trade Martin Pakula said: “TMA is an Australian success story and now with the establishment of its new operations in Victoria, the company can be expected to continue to grow and provide more jobs for local people.” Setting up in Victoria has allowed TMA to take on new customers including a major contract with Woolworths and to expand its product range, notably with the ZipBy technology platform – an app that allows customers to use secure car parks without printed tickets. Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly said: “This is a significant win for Melbourne’s west – a forward-thinking company seeing the opportunities this region can offer.” Alesha Capone

Horse therapy helps Residents at two Werribee aged care homes enjoyed some oversized, carrot-munching visitors last week. Percherons Wednesday and Wazza paid a visit to Mercy Place Wyndham and Estia Health Werribee last Thursday as part of a touring equine therapy program. Therapy sessions aim to help ease conditions commonly faced by the elderly, such as cognitive impairment and depression and encourage participants to relax and open up. Mercy Place Wyndham lifestyle co-ordinator Tim Whitmore said the animal therapy sessions were a “truly beautiful experienceâ€?. “These sessions bring such joy to the residents,â€? Wyndham’s famous five By Esther Lauaki Five generations of Wyndham women are traced back to Helene Koniuk. Mrs Koniuk, 94, set down roots in Tarneit more than two decades ago and today her daughter, granddaughters, great-granddaughter and great-great-granddaughters all live within 15 minutes of her. The family recently captured the generations in a portrait which they dubbed their “begats photo”. Mrs Koniuk, a resident at Glendale Aged Care, arrived in Australia from Germany in 1950 with her now late husband Gregory and daughter Nadia, as displaced persons after World War II. Nadia went on to marry Robert Szuhan and the couple raised their daughter Lara in Manor Lakes. Lara, a long-serving teacher in Wyndham Vale, has two daughters Natalie and Tylah. The youngest of the five generations is three-year-old Piper, Natalie’s daughter. Nadia told Star Weekly she hoped her family would remain for generations to come. “It’s wonderful to have my family so close,” she said. “When my mother [Helene] lived in Tarneit she had such wonderful neighbours and we got to know many of the people in her street. “My daughter has spent all her working life in Werribee and completed schooling here. “The whole family is very content where we are.” She said she loved everything about the area – especially the landscape. “When we first moved here, it was because of the wide open spaces,” Nadia said. “When we look out our windows, we see the You Yangs and we still can breathe our country air. “We found our little corner of the world.”

Teenage boys assaulted and robbed Two teenage boys were assaulted and robbed in Kookaburra Avenue, Werribee earlier this month. Detectives from the Altona North Divisional Response Unit are investigating the incidents, which occurred on November 9. Police said that a 13 year-old Hoppers Crossing boy was walking around the avenue about 4.30pm, when a group of males – who are all perceived to be African in appearance – approached him. One of the males reached into the victim’s pocket and stole his mobile phone. The victim attempted to grab the phone back and was assaulted. A 16-year-old Hoppers Crossing teenager, who who was riding past at the time, was also assaulted before his bike, watch and phone were stolen. The bike stolen was a black-coloured Mongoose BMX. The 16-year-old was allegedly punched and kicked during the assault. The offenders fled the scene on foot. Both victims sustained non life-threatening injuries and received medical treatment. The investigation remains ongoing and police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or with any information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Alesha Capone

Angry birds are stark raven mad By Alesha Capone

(Damjan Janevski) 199984_01

It’s not just swooping magpies that you need to watch out for as the weather warms up. Magpies are famous for swooping people during their annual breeding season, but they are not the only bird species to engage in this behaviour. Hoppers Crossing resident Kathy MacKendrick contacted Star Weekly last week to report “some very aggressive Australian ravens in her suburb. Ms MacKendrick said the swooping ravens were especially active in the Hoppers Crossing train station carpark, and along Pannam Drive and McKellar Avenue. “Ravens can be heard cawing in very tall trees, on the tops of poles, and on powerlines – and are generally seen flying in pairs, according to my research, she said. “Ravens also tend to give a useful warning that they are about to swoop, with a long loud croaking ‘cawww’ on a descending note. “I usually wear a sun visor and carry something in my hand to wave if I feel one is about to swoop on me, which seems successful. “Others suggest wearing a cap or hat with two ‘eyes’ drawn on it, as apparently swooping birds don’t like being looked at. “Experts warn not to try to beat them off, as they can become more aggressive. Ms MacKendrick said there was one tall tree on Pannam Drive, between Murdoch Street and Cumming Drive, where a particularly vigilant raven lived. She said the raven often followed her along the footpath from about three metres back, and would stop walking if she did. “When I’m at the floodway near the bus stop close to the corner of Cumming Drive, he stops following me, she said.

Point Cook brothers Dhruthin and Rheyansh are junior chess champions. The pair, who are aged eight and five respectively, are members of the Wyndham Chess Club. Dhruthin said he started playing chess about a year ago with his uncle Ashok, while Rheyansh took up the game a few months ago. The boys have a large amount of chess trophies to their names, including Dhruthin’s first place in the Interschool State Finals 2019 and first place in the open section of the Chess Victoria Junior Masters Championship 2019. He is also ranked number nine in Australia for classical chess players aged eight years old and under. In October, Rheyansh was named the overall winner in the Wyndham Chess Club’s Novice Spring Cup chess tournament, in which other players were aged up to 13 years old. Rheyansh and Dhruthin have both qualified to represent Victoria at an interschool national chess competition, to be held in Melbourne next month. The brothers play chess every day, and practice before and after school by doing paper-based chess puzzles, watching chess videos and playing the game online. RHEYANSH AND DHRUTHIN

When Rosemary Harrigan found an old book inside a filing cabinet at the Werribee District Historical Society’s museum, she knew that she had stumbled across something special. Mrs Harrigan, a researcher at the historical society, said she was delighted to discover the tome was a minute book from Werribee’s former Mechanic’s Institute, dated between 1889 to 1923. Mrs Harrigan said the minute book was donated to the historical society by the family of J.L. Callanan, who for many years ran a pharmacy located next to the museum. “It was a wonderful find, particularly as I’ve had a keen interest in Werribee’s pioneering history for a very long time. When this minute book turned up in a drawer, I just thought, ‘it’s got to be opened up to see the light of day’,” Mrs Harrigan said. “The minute book is a fabulous snapshot of Werribee’s social activities in the early days. “The Mechanic’s Institute was in great demand, it was always heavily booked by dance groups, had concerts, card games, theatre and a lot of church groups.” The former Mechanic’s Institute, which was built in 1887, was demolished in 1964. It was located at the site of the Wyndham Cultural Centre in Watton Street, Werribee. Mrs Harrigan said she found the minute book about two years ago and has spent about 18 months transcribing the bulk of it. “One of the more amusing entries was the fact they needed to put frosting on the windows of the lodge, because they had peeping Toms,” she said. New rules for jet ski operators By Esther Lauaki New five-knot speed restrictions for jet skiers in areas of Port Phillip Bay will come into effect next month. Rules restricting irregular riding of jet skis will be implemented by Maritime Safety Victoria to improve safety at Port Phillip Bay for all waterway users. Weaving, surfing down, jumping over or across any waves, wake or wash and freestyling, which includes manoeuvres such as sharp turns, circular or semi-circular, will be banned

in five-knot zones. As of December 16, jet skis will be required to: • Navigate in the safest, most direct course from the shore heading seaward, or from the sea towards the shore – this includes the beach, boat ramp or berthing facility including a jetty, pier or mooring. • Avoid any irregular riding or freestyling within the five-knot speed restriction zones including donuts, circles, weaving. Changes of direction to avoid other waterway users is allowed. Maritime Safety Victoria acting director

Cameron Toy said 67 per cent of respondents to a recent survey supported the new rule. “Following an extensive public consultation process and having considered the significant feedback and comments received, I have taken the decision to implement this new rule,” Mr Toy said. “The new rule will require personal watercraft operators to operate their craft in a predictable manner, which will provide greater certainty to other waterway users on the path they intend to take,” he said. “The rule prohibits the ‘irregular riding’ of jet

skis in five-knot speed restricted zones around Port Phillip, to address the risk of incidents involving jet skis and other beach users.” Jet skiers found in breach of the rules may face a $330 fine. Mr Toy said the new rules bring waters around Port Phillip Bay in line with other jurisdictions, such as New South Wales, and will simplify compliance activities. “Maritime Safety Victoria is committed to ensuring that everyone … can enjoy a safe day on the water,” he said. Helping the homeless Two Point Cook Senior Secondary College students are helping people sleeping rough. Year 10 students Vijay and Haytham are running a blanket drive, to collect donations of used blankets for homeless people. Point Cook Senior Secondary College teacher Fabiola Sierra said the boys developed their blanket drive project proposal during a humanities class which taught students community, leadership and entrepreneurial skills. Haytham said that although he and Vijay brainstormed “lots and lots of community projects we could do to help the people in need”, the issue of homeless people stood out. “Our goal was to provide something to homeless people that will assist them,” he said. “We realised that most of the homeless people had blankets that are old and had holes in them and was less effective during winter.” Vijay said that after he and Haytham

developed their proposal, he contacted the Point Cook Town Centre’s management team to ask if they could place a donation box for blankets to be placed in, within the mall area. He and Haytham also placed a box at the college, and put up posters around the school and town centre to raise awareness of their project. The boys said they would take the donated blankets into Melbourne next month, to distribute to homeless people. Alesha Capone

Pudding welfare first Werribee Lions Club members are entering into the festive spirit as they embark on a fundraising mission ahead of next year. The Lions Club will be selling its traditional Christmas cakes and puddings in multiple locations across Wyndham, each weekend next month in the lead-up to December 25. The annual Lions Christmas cake sale is the organisation’s largest yearly fundraiser. Proceeds raised during the sale go towards funding local community welfare projects. Lions Clubs in Australia began selling Christmas cakes in 1965, and the sales of the cakes have since raised more than $60 million. Lions Australia chief executive Rob Oerlemans said many clubs would use this year’s Christmas Cake profits to support people

impacted by bushfires. The Lions Christmas cakes are available in 1.5 kilograms ($17) and 1 kilogram ($13) sizes. The 900 gram puddings are $13. The Werribee Lions Club will be selling cakes at the Manor Lakes Shopping Centre, the Watton Street Arcade (near Star Weekly) and Bunnings’ Hoppers Crossing and Werribee stores. Cakes can also be purchased from the Bendigo Bank, Gift Givers Gallery and Sesto Shoes in Watton Street, Werribee or anytime by contacting the Lions Club at werribeelions@ gmail.com, or see https://werribee.vic.lions.org. au/ for details. Lost super could be a cash bonus By Alesha Capone If you live in Wyndham, it may be worth checking to see if you have any lost or unclaimed superannuation accounts. According to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), two Wyndham postcodes are among the top 10 in the nation with the highest amounts of lost and unclaimed super. Of the nation’s postcodes, the 3030 area (which covers Derrimut, Quandong, Point Cook, Werribee and Werribee South) has recorded the second-highest amount of

money remaining in lost and unclaimed superannuation accounts. The 3030 postal zone has more than $72 million contained within 9966 lost and unclaimed superannuation accounts. The 3029 postcode (which covers Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit and Truganina) placed sixth nationally, with more than $57 million in 8883 lost and unclaimed super accounts. In and around Wyndham, other postcodes recorded: • Postcode 3024 (Wyndham Vale, Manor Lakes): More than $14 million in lost and

unclaimed super, across 2529 accounts. • 3026 (Laverton North): $575,389 in 197 accounts. • 3027 (Laverton RAAF, Williams RAAF, Williams Landing): More than $1.96 million in 459 accounts. • 3028 (Altona Meadows, Laverton, Seabrook): More than $33 million in 3721 accounts. • 3211 (Little River): More than $1.39 million in 127 accounts. Postcode 2170 (Liverpool and surrounds, in New South Wales) had the largest amount

of lost and unclaimed super in Australia, with more than $81 million waiting to be claimed. According to the ATO, there is more than $20.8 billion in lost and unclaimed super across Australia. ATO assistant commissioner Graham Whyte said people often lost touch with their super fund by changing jobs or moving home. “It’s important to know that this doesn’t mean it’s lost forever, getting back in touch is easier than you think,” he said. Orange against violence The Werribee Civic Centre is being lit up in orange to raise awareness of gender-based violence. Wyndham council has installed orange lights on the civic building, as part of the Centre for Women’s Global Leadership campaign, 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, which is observed across the globe from November 25 to December 10. The campaign encourages participants to take part in educational activities that support action on gender equity, as a building block to prevent violence against women. Wyndham’s safer communities portfolio holder, Cr Kim McAliney, said violence against women and sexual harassment should never be tolerated. “One woman is killed by a partner every nine days in Australia, and one in six women have experienced physical or sexual violence by a current or ex-partner since the age of 15,”

Cr McAliney said. “How we begin [to change] is calling out gender inequality within our friendship groups, family, our workplace and the community and of course getting help and support for women who you believe may be in abusive relationships. “A small contribution everyone can make is to paint a nail orange in support of the campaign.” For more information on the 16 Days campaign, see https://16daysactivist.whwest. org.au/

Students and families created a new artwork at MacKillop College. (Damjan Janevski) 201085_01

Art with heart MacKillop College in Werribee has developed an art project aimed at building a sense of community and connection between Wyndham residents. The MacKillop College Family Art Project, which was unveiled last Thursday, is the brainchild of the school’s cultural inclusivity team. The college’s communications and marketing manager Nicola Muller said that the team appplied for a Wyndham council grant to give families from diverse cultural backgrounds the opportunity to tell their personal stories and the journeys which brought them to the area. “Over the past four weeks, the families have come together to develop their ideas and turn them into individual pieces of art that, when

combined, form an impressive collection of powerful migration stories,” Ms Muller said. “In one of the MacKillop College art classrooms, students, their parents/guardians, and staff have come together to draw, paint, workshop and chat, listening to one another and learning about one another. “A special mention also goes to staff members Andrew Exton, John Jok, Akuc Deng and Silvio Mannello without whom the project could not have worked. “We sincerely hope to build on the foundation of the relationships formed by this project, growing our community and our opportunities for learning from one another.” Alesha Capone

native grassland,” Mr Ju said. “It is a unique and sensitive ecosystem that is habitat for many native animals. “It’s important that we keep some of it for future generations.” Werribee Park chief ranger James Brincat said the reserves would connect the You Yangs to the Werribee River across the volcanic plain. “The reserves will protect the largest remaining concentration of volcanic plains grasslands in Australia and a range of other habitat types, including ephemeral wetlands, waterways, Red Gum swamps, rocky knolls and open grassy woodlands,” Mr Brincat said. Natural Temperate Refugee volunteer Nyee Lay said he was pleased to be able to help.

Focus on sustainability Sustainability was at the centre of a green-themed event hosted by Thomas Chirnside Primary School in Werribee last week. Pupils, families and staff worked hard to organise the school’s annual Showcase, which was held on Thursday. Visitors to the school were able to enjoy activities and view work based on educational subjects from throughout the year, including exhibitions of art and music performances such as choirs, drumming workshops and discos. The sustainability theme was emphasised with the sale of garden produce and seeds from the school’s Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden.

School families and businesses also donated ingredients, in addition to those grown on-site. A variety of food, such as rice paper rolls, paella, pizza, lemonade and lemon curd was on offer, and the pipils produced friendship bracelets, pom-poms and scented playdough for sale. The school’s principal Bev Thompson said: “This year we wanted to show many more of the interests that are important to our school and its developing culture”. “We tried to build on the success of previous events and introduce a sustainability theme, which is an important emerging idea at the school.”

Refugee volunteers are rolling their sleeves up to help save an important native grassland in Wyndham. The group, from the Karen community, is working with Parks Victoria to clean seeds needed to revegetate 20,000 square hectares of land across Wyndham, Mt Cotterell and Rockbank that make up the Western Grasslands Reserve. The native grass has been degraded over time by livestock and cropping. Hundreds of kilos of native kangaroo grass has been trucked in from western Victoria to help revegetate the land. Parks Victoria grassland ranger Emma Parker said the kangaroo grass seeds needed to be extracted from the grass clippings by hand. “A group of local Karen refugees have volunteered to clean and collect the thousands of seeds needed to revegetate the reserves,” Ms Parker said. “It is an unbelievable contribution because seed cleaning is laborious manual work. “It is work that can only really be done by hand and the Karen group has stepped up to help.” The seed is collected by hand threshing grass clippings and then sift ing the grass to remove the seed. Werribee Park ranger and Karen community member Hsar Thein Ju rallied the group to lend a helping hand. “It’s important that we preserve some of the

Waste discharge leads to fine By Alesha Capone A Laverton North company and its director have been fined $55,500 for discharging waste water contaminated with a corrosive industrial chemical into a drain. The Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) prosecuted Chemprod Nominees Pty Ltd earlier this month (trading as Omega Chemicals) and its director, Leslie Chaim Fried, over the discharge of waste water contaminated with sodium metabisulphite that flowed into Kayes Drain.

The company and Mr Fried pleaded guilty in the Sunshine Magistrates Court to causing an environmental hazard, permitting the deposit of industrial waste to an unlicensed site and pollution of waters. The investigation began when Melbourne Water officers reported a white substance in Kayes Drain. EPA investigators traced the contaminated water back to the Chemprod premises on Fitzgerald Road. The contaminated water flowed approximately two kilometres downstream. Kayes Drain feeds into Laverton Creek,

which runs alongside a number of private properties and public spaces flowing through the Altona Foreshore Reserve wetlands to Altona Bay. The waste water came from the cleaning of a chemical tank, and should have been sent to the company’s onsite effluent treatment facility. Sodium metabisulphite is used as a disinfectant, antioxidant and preservative agent. The Sunshine Magistrates Court fined the company $30,000 without conviction, ordered it to pay EPA costs of $13,000 and to publicise its offending in major and local newspapers.

Mr Fried was sentenced to an adjourned undertaking, without conviction, for 18 months and ordered to pay $12,500 to the court fund. EPA regional manager for western metropolitan, Stephen Lansdell, said the Victorian community would not tolerate businesses committing offences such as this. “Kayes Drain is a concrete stormwater drain at Fitzgerald Road, which limited the damage done, but it flows into a residential area and wetlands on its way to Altona Bay,” Mr Lansdell said.

Students in recycling mode Tarneit students proved that one person’s trash is another’s masterpiece. Year 8 and 9 students from Tarneit P-9 College earlier this month won first prize for a sculpture made entirely of recycled materials. The sculpture, called Humanity Across the Aquatic, was part of a Wyndham council competition aimed at encouraging young people to think about what to do with waste as part of National Recycling Week. Tarneit P-9 College students used polystyrene, fabric, plastic bottles and cardboard to create their piece of artwork. Sculptures by students from Baden Powell P-9 College – Tarneit Campus, Westbourne Grammar School, The Grange P-12 College as well as Tarneit P-9 College will be on display at the Manor Lakes Library until this weekend. Disability services on display Sculpture of life Light and life inspired the sculpture that takes pride of place in Fredrick White’s Hoppers Crossing front yard. The experienced sculptor moved to the area two years ago and said the three metre tall art installation at his Bethany Road property has drawn the attention of many passers by. “The bus route comes through here and people often wonder what this sculpture is all about,“ White told Star Weekly. It took three months for him to create the 200 kilogram teardrop-shaped sculpture called Eulogy – To speak in praise of light. “I’ve been sculpting since the early ’80s,” White said. “My personal work comes from a deep place of wanting to understand the natural world and to each other. “Eulogy is a meditation on mortality. The work is the shape of a water droplet … I really laboured over getting the shapes right. “Water is symbolic of that idea of life and mortality. I am interested in the stuff that holds us together, the dominant paradigms of human life, our reliance on the earth and each other.” White recently completed a large-scale sculpture at the entrance of Berwick Football Club and another called Three Business Who Bought Their Own Lunch at Swanston Street in Melbourne.

More than 80 providers will showcase their services at the Wyndham Disability Expo this week. The expo will be held on Friday, November 29 in Hoppers Crossing. Wyndham’s family friendly portfolio holder, Cr Mia Shaw, said the expo would provide attendees with an opportunity to meet with providers in areas including accommodation, home and vehicle modifications, therapies, language services, day and holiday support. “Attendees can meet providers face-to-face to see how they can assist them and take part in the educational workshops during the day,” Cr Shaw said. “More than 1400 people attended the 2018 expo and many participants told us they learnt about many new services and how they can make their lives easier – and they even grew their support and friendship networks. “Th is year’s expo will feature both NDIS and non-NDIS providers, supporting the community with information on how to get the most out of their NDIS packages and for those not eligible for the NDIS, information on pathways to services and support.” Cr Shaw said the event would be fully-accessible and have language and Auslan interpreters, as well as guides, to help attendees fi nd what they are looking for, along with a chill-out zone with sensory activities for children. The Wyndham Disability Expo will be held at Encore Events Centre, 80 Derrimut Road, Hopppers Crossing from 10am to 3pm. See www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/ disabilityexpo for details. MY WYNDHAM John Costa is a director of Costa’s Mitre 10 in Hoppers Crossing, and is the new president of Hoppers Crossing Football Club. He chats with Alesha Capone. Tell me about the history of your business.

How did you become involved with Hoppers Crossing FC? I played senior football there from when I was about 18 or 19, for 10 years almost. I finished in the seniors and came back as an administrator. In 1992 we won our first senior premiership. I then left and concentrated on work, getting married and having a family. I became involved in the club again during 2001. I became vice-president, which lasted two years. We oversaw another premiership in 2002, and it was fantastic to be part of that as an administrator. About seven years ago, I was asked back at Hoppers Crossing Football Club as a selector. Then I was asked if I would consider becoming president, to help the club out.

(Damjan Janevski) 201010_02

My father and uncle started the business 50-odd years ago. It started out in Francis Street, Yarraville and 29 years ago, they brought Powells in Werribee, then opened this place (Costa’s Mitre 10) in 1986. Probably around 13 years ago we were at our biggest with four stores, in Campbellfield, Brooklyn, Hoppers Crossing and Werribee, and nearly 200 employees. My dad Mario passed away around that time. Uncle Gerry was a partner, he is still involved in the business. My sister Vitina and I are joint directors, along with Gerry’s kids. The business has changed in the last three, four years. We’ve diversified and moved more into building, and less into retail. I love talking to customers, I’m pretty hands-on.

What are your plans for the club’s future? I’ve been doing my homework since August, looking at what we can do better, to turn the club around and look at where we want to get to. We plan to make Hoppers Crossing great again. We will develop a strategy in the next two to three weeks, with the executive

committee including vice-president Karen Kitchen, a life-long member of the club. We also have a director of football on board, who was involved with the club in 2001-2004, Charlie Bonanno. Our senior coach Steve Kretiuk is an ex-Bulldogs player. For the past seven years he has been in the job, we’ve taken two runners-up and been in the finals every year he’s been here.

Due to the great work of the committee during 2019, we have some great initiatives coming up – our girls’ senior team will launch in 2020. For my wife Jenine and I, it’s a joint project, we’re in it together. As well, my oldest son Lachlan, who is 23, is playing senior football for the club and my 17-year-old daughter is doing her IB next year.

A proposal to build a high voltage power transmission line through the northern area of Werribee Shire has come under strong opposition from the landholders of the area. Residents claim that the route is too far south and consequently adversely affects more people than would be necessary if a more northerly route was selected.

Werribee’s dwindling healthcare system suffered another blow when only 300 of Werribee’s 67,000 residents turned out for a public meeting to discuss Werribee District Hospital’s monetary woes, last week. The cut in beds at the hospital in recent months and the likelihood of funding for the Hoppers Crossing hospital hanging in the balance, seemed to concern only about 0.45 per cent of residents.

An angry Wyndham councillor has demanded local parents “know where their kids are” after a number of violent incidents involving young people and motorists in the past month. Councillor Shane Bourke’s call coincides with concerns about the safety of the area close to railway lines near the Old Geelong Road shops in Hoppers Crossing.

A Hoppers Crossing teenager brutally bashed by a gang of up to 10 youths last Saturday was “very lucky” to escape without life-threatening injuries, police have said. The apprentice plumber, who only wanted to be known as Brad, was still recovering earlier this week, but has vowed never to walk alone again.

Property of the week

WERRIBEE 49 Westleigh Drive, 3030 Ray White Werribee: 9974 0000

Price: $800,000 – $880,000

Holiday at home in this gorgeous resort-style property. It’s summer time soon and the living will be easy with leisure options aplenty both inside and out. Presenting in solid fashion with an imposing dark brick facade, inside it’s all sunny and bright thanks to banks of windows and designer lighting. There are three bedrooms downstairs, the main with a walk-through robe to an en suite with a corner spa. A fourth bedroom upstairs occupies the total first floor area, making it ideal for a teen retreat. A study 18 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY Wednesday, 27 November, 2019

could easily be converted into a fifth bedroom if required. The showstopping open-plan kitchen/ dining/living area at the rear of the house is decked out in greys and white, with floorboards uniting all areas. The sleek kitchen is a cook’s dream where granite benchtops make a striking contrast with the white cabinetry. There is also stainless-steel appliances, an island bench with seating for four, wine storage and glamorous pendant lighting. This area is kept cosy courtesy of a gas log fireplace.

A separate lounge room at the front of the house rounds out the living areas. While it’s all style inside, it’s outside where this house comes into its own. Timber bifold doors from the dining area open to a massive steel and PVC pergola attached to the house. This area is set up for year-round entertaining with a wood fire heater for winter and fan for summer. There is more than enough room for a dining and lounge setting – the present owners also have an outdoor pool table – to essentially double the size of the living areas. There is

also a built-in barbecue. Lush landscaping adds to the resort-style vibe, but it doesn’t stop there. Also undercover, via a shade sail, is a solar-heated pool and spa with a twinkling waterfall feature. And on it goes with an in-ground trampoline and standalone workshop. Other attractions include a remote-controlled double garage, security cameras and intercom. Jan Fisher

Bring your friends for a sleepover, there’s plenty of room in this seven-bedroom house for everyone to enjoy. But there’s no need to stay inside, this property of just over four hectares (10 acres in the old scale) has space enough for all. With a dam, extensive shedding and fencing it also offers the option for raising stock or running horses or just enjoying the serenity. The house would benefit from some updating, but is perfectly fine as is. As well as the seven bedrooms there are three living areas and two kitchens, offering the option of creating a guest wing or teen retreat. There are two bathrooms, one with a claw-foot bath the other with a luxe corner spa. It’s all just a short drive to Little River, 25 minutes to Geelong and 35 minutes into Melbourne’s CBD.

Enjoy open plan living at its best with this three-bedroom townhouse. A single, open space offers two large living areas divided by a central kitchen and dining area. In the kitchen, light-coloured cabinetry is complemented by black benchtops. There’s plenty of storage with underbench and overhead cabinets, and an island bench with integrated sink. Appliances, including a dishwasher, are stainless-steel. The living area, to the front, has large windows which let in plenty of natural light, while glass doors at the back link to a patio area and private backyard. A European laundry is tucked under the staircase, as is a powder room. Upstairs is devoted to sleeping with three large bedrooms, all with built-in robes. The main bedroom has access to a balcony and an en suite. The sleek, clean lines of the en suite are echoed in the family bathroom, also up here. The property is in the popular Innisfail estate, within one kilometre of Point Cook Town Centre.

DELIVERING STRAIGHT TO YOUR DESIRED LETTERBOXES

SPORT One that got away for Hoppers Crossing Hoppers Crossing has fumbled its chance to reel in the biggest fish in the Victorian Sub District Cricket Association pond. The Cats had ladder leader Williamstown on the hook at Hogans Road Reserve on Saturday, but let it get away in a loss that could come back to bite. Cats captain Justin Goegan rued his side’s inability to chase down a small target of 128 in the one-day game. “Willy are the benchmark of the competition at the moment and we let that one slip,” he said. “The first half of the day I was pretty happy with, especially against that sort of side because they’ve been making 200-plus every game, so to restrict them to 127 was pretty good. “It’s just a bit disappointing not to chase that total down.” Hoppers Crossing was bowled out for 94 – 33 runs short of the target. While Williamstown is a side that believes

it can win from any position, the Cats are currently the opposite. “I think we didn’t believe we could win,” Goegan said. It is not all bad for Hoppers Crossing though. The Cats bowling attack showed it can bring down even the best batting line-up in the competition. They showcased their depth with seven different bowlers used. Bhaumik Jani was the standout with 3-17 off nine, while Brett Smith and Trent Said took two wickets apiece. Smith claimed the major scalp of Williamstown captain Brent McMinn, who is averaging 91 this season. “We’ve got six, seven, maybe even eight options,” Goegan said. “There’s a couple of blokes that could bowl who aren’t getting a bowl at the moment purely because the other blokes are doing their job.” It will be back to the drawing board for Hoppers Crossing when it comes to its batting.

With Twenty20 matches on Tuesday and Thursday night, the Cats will have an important net session on Wednesday to iron out some deficiencies. Meanwhile, the annual Movember charity game between Hoppers Crossing and Werribee will take place at Hogans Road Reserve on Thursday night. With the recent passing of Hoppers first XI player Bryce Stuart, the game will take on extra significance this season. “It will probably be a bit of an emotional night,” Goegan said. “Both us and Werribee, what we do for the cause is pretty good. The amount of money we’ve been raising over the past five or six years has been pretty significant. Lance Jenkinson Bhaumik Jani took three scalps for Hoppers Crossing. (Shawn Smits) 201308_20

United’s VAR anger By Lance Jenkinson Western United is frustrated, but not panicked, after falling to consecutive A-League losses for the first time. United coach Mark Rudan pointed to his side’s dominance in general play in one-goal defeats to Newcastle Jets and Central Coast Mariners over the past two rounds as a source for optimism. “Those two narrow losses, if you look at both games in isolation, I think the first 30 minutes against Newcastle, we weren’t at our best, we rectified that and absolutely annihilated them in the second half and did everything but score,” he said. “Exactly the same in this one [against Central Coast], apart from a deflection [on the Mariners goal], they hadn’t had a shot [on target] I don’t think. “Everybody saw the kind of team that we are, sometimes they go for you, sometimes it doesn’t go for you, but I’m extremely proud of the players, their effort, the way they kept fighting to get themselves back into the game.

“The attitude is first class, the character of the team is brilliant.” Western United’s finishing was the issue in its 1-0 loss to Central Coast Mariners in Gosford on Sunday evening. United had the ball camped in their attacking third for most of the game, but could not unlock the Mariners defence. The most clear-cut chance of the game fell to Panagiotis Kone in the first half, but he put a perfectly weighted ball from Alessandro Diamanti over the crossbar from close range. The chances continued to come for United with Besart Berisha tipping a shot over the crossbar and then powering a header straight into the arms of Central Coast goalkeeper Mark Birighitti. Diamanti had a number of half-chances that he might have buried on another day. Rudan paid credit to the discipline of the Mariners, who were desperate to win their first game at home this season. “They fought hard, they battled hard and they kept their zero,” he said. “I need to give them due respect as well because they fought

extremely hard to get that win.” Rudan was ropable about two VAR decisions that went against Western United late in the second half. The first contentious decision came when United substitute Dylan Pierias whipped in a cross which hit the trailing arm of Mariners defender Ziggy Gordon. Gordon’s arm appeared to be struck in an unnatural position, but the video assistant ruled play on. The next vociferous call for VAR intervention from the Western United coaches came when United winger Connor Pain fired a shot on target, which hit the out-stretched arm of Mariners goalscorer Giancarlo Gallifuoco. Rudan voiced his displeasure at both calls that went against his side and called on the A-League to explain how they came to the decisions. “If you want to look at us as a football club, not one VAR decision has gone our way this year,” he said. Fifth-placed Western United will confront its toughest test yet when reigning champions Sydney FC visit GHMBA Stadium in Geelong on Sunday at 4pm.

All aboard the Werribee express. It has been a fun ride so far this season for the road warriors of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association. The Tigers have played their opening five games away from Chirnside Park for a flawless record, winning four with a draw thrown in due to exceptional circumstances. They sit comfortably among the premiership contenders in the east-west group. While the wins have been frequent for Werribee – they secured more points in a thrilling victory over Noble Park on Saturday – it is never an easy path when you are playing away from home. Tigers captain-coach Tim O’Brien said his team has needed to be switched on, particularly for the long trips to the east. “We have to play some good cricket to get over the line,” he said. Werribee was staring down the barrel early in its clash with Noble Park at Noble Park Reserve. The hosts had the look of a side that was destined for a big score as they advanced to 2-109. However, Werribee did not let the situation get out of hand, reeling Noble Park back to restrict it to a manageable 4-199. Jonathan Burton was huge for Werribee, producing an economical 1-15 off nine overs. Burton was so impressive that O’Brien let him bowl his nine allotted overs without change. “I wasn’t planning to bowl him nine straight, but I thought he was doing such a good job from one end and we had Jack Budd in the side, who is pretty good at the death, so I kept him on,” O’Brien said. Werribee timed its run to victory to perfection. The Tigers passed the target four down with four balls to spare. Having the Dean brothers in form certainly helps the Tigers cause. Matt (70) and Shaun (37) laid the platform for a memorable win. O’Brien (28) and James Freeman (32 not out) put the finishing touches on the victory. Werribee is on the road again to face Mount Waverley in a one-day game on Saturday. Lance Jenkinson 33 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY Wednesday, 27 November, 2019

Close shave for Giants

Sports shorts Bowls Werribee went down fighting 83-70 against top-of-the-ladder MCC in their Bowls Victoria division 1 clash at Chirnside Park on Saturday. The Bees could only manage one rink win on the day with Ian Milledge victorious 23-13. Colin Thompson (18-22), Peter Yassar (15-24) and Rob Smith (14-24) all went down. Werribee has fallen to sixth in the standings ahead of a trip to relegationthreatened Whittlesea.

By Lance Jenkinson Werribee Giants have learnt to expect the unexpected in this young Baseball Victoria summer league division 2 season. The Giants were odds-on to record a comfortable win over struggling newcomers St Kilda Saints at President’s Park on Saturday, but they got a huge fright in a narrow 5-4 victory. Giants coach John Curnow believes games like this prove the competition is much tighter this summer than it was last season. “I don’t think there’s anyone we can take lightly this season, he said. “If you’re not on the front foot from the start, you’ll be playing catch-up. Werribee was somewhat lucky to escape with a victory. The Giants were not at their best defensively and it hurt them on the scoreboard. Curnow is not concerned by the early issues in the field with a number of Giants playing in unfamiliar roles. “We’ve had our lapses here and there, he said. “We’ve got guys playing out of position compared to where they were last year. “It’s just a bit of unfamiliar territory early in the season. “It’s just a little bobble here and there, a ball between the legs and it can cost you sometimes. “Lucky enough it didn’t cost us this game. Werribee has starting pitcher Wes De Jong to thank for this win. De Jong was immense in his seven innings of work. “He threw a lot of strikes, got them to put the ball in play, struck out about seven, Curnow said. “He was a bit disappointed when I told him he was done, but he threw 101 pitches, so I didn’t want to go another inning with him. Josh Lee pitched two innings to close out the game. Offensively, Werribee shared the

Cricket Werribee Centrals were stung by a one wicket defeat in a thriller to Kingsville in their Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 2 match. The Centurions fought hard to defend their total of 189, but Kingsville snuck home on the back of a 13-run stand from their last two batsmen. It will be a busy weekend coming up for the third-placed Centurions with one-day games against Newport-Digman, away on Saturday, and Laverton, at home on Sunday.

workload with Wade Balzer the only player with multiple hits. Balzer provided the highlight of the game with a home run in the middle innings. Oliver Box and Trent Pantalleresco were the other Giants who looked confident in the batters box. Werribee will face St Kilda on Thursday night at President’s Park and Saturday on the road to round out the three-game series. “We’ve seen them now, we know what we’re going to expect, so we’ll be ready for them

Thursday night, Curnow said. Meanwhile, Melbourne Aces had an indifferent start to the Australian Baseball League season. After losing the opening two games against the Canberra Cavalry in the nation’s capital, the Aces hit back to take games three and four to split the series. Peter Moylan and Scott Mitchinson were the winning pitchers for the Aces. The Aces will play their first home series against Auckland Tuatara at Melbourne Ballpark starting on Friday night.

Facts you may not know about fire Conditions in Victoria make it one of the most bushfire-prone regions in the world, along with California and Spain. Just two weeks of hot, dry and windy weather creates potentially disastrous bushfire conditions that normal Victorian homes are not equipped to survive. At 1100°C, radiant heat from bushfires can kill from up to 300 metres away and cause trees to combust without touching them.

Fires can travel at 25km/h, making them impossible to outrun. A change in wind direction can alter their trajectory in seconds and they move twice as fast uphill on a slope of just 10 degrees. Burning embers can spread bushfires up to 40km ahead of the fire front, starting dangerous new spot fires in seconds. Rural grassfires can be just as dangerous as bushfires, travelling faster and starting earlier due to grass drying out more quickly.
