First crossing finalised By Esther Lauaki The notorious Cherry Street level crossing will be the first of three in Wyndham to go with the state government finalising its plan for the project. The state government last week confirmed a revised design for a new road bridge, which will be built east of the existing crossing to connect Tarneit Road and the Princes Highway. Major work on the project is expected to start next year. The finalised plans also include a well-lit, accessible pedestrian underpass to enable pedestrian and cyclist access to homes and local shops. Werribee MP Tim Pallas said the project would create a safer shopping precinct, improve traffic flow and provide a more reliable journey for those travelling to and from the Princes Freeway. “Like many level crossings across Melbourne, the Cherry Street level crossing has sadly been the scene of tragedy – separating trains and vehicles for good will ensure that this constant danger is eliminated,” Mr Pallas said. “Removing the three level crossings in the Wyndham area will not only improve safety, but it will also result in more reliable journeys and will remove the boom gates that hinder us from running more trains on the Werribee line. “Whether it’s new open space, shared-use paths or more modern facilities, these level crossing removal projects provide valuable opportunities to enhance the area around them.” Mr Pallas said the preferred option of a road bridge followed extensive design and site assessments. He said the design would mean no impact to a major oil pipeline and only minor road and rail disruptions during construction, compared to other designs. “During consultation, the community preference was for signalised intersections instead of roundabouts and this has now been incorporated into the design,” Ms Pallas said. A footpath on the new road bridge and a shared-use path will be built south of the Werribee line between the pedestrian underpass and the south end of the bridge. Residents will be invited to an upcoming community session to give feedback on aspects of the project, such as pedestrian underpass designs and the type of plants used in landscaping. Tarneit teenager Logan Tapuala will team up with a well-known fire knife performer to help teach a workshop this week. The fire knife – aka the Siva Afi – is a traditional Samoan cultural implement that is used in ceremonial dances. Logan, 16, will assist fire knife performer Justyce Edmonds at a workshop which will teach participants the basic movements used by ancient Samoan warriors in war. While the workshop will not include any fire, the spins and movements to be taught will be the same ones used by the professionals. Logan said that when he was about six or seven years old, his uncle Stevie taught him the basics of Siva Afi. “I like doing it because it connects me to my culture,” he said. “I practice in my backyard at home.” Logan’s mother Morwenna, who runs a business called Measina Treasures of Samoa – which aims to give back to the Samoan community by selling products made by Samoans, promoting Samoan businesses and offering educational programs sharing Samoan culture – will present the Siva Afi workshop on Friday, November 22, from 7.30-9pm at Tarneit Rise Primary School. A liquor store in Synnot Street, Werribee has sold for $7.75 million. The First Choice Liquor Market attracted more than 20 bidders when it was sold by Burgess Rawson, at a portfolio auction last month. Prior to the auction, Star Weekly reported that the vendors were hoping to achieve a price of about $5.5 million for the store. The property is leased to Coles Group on a seven-year agreement with eight five-year options. The 2543 square metre store site, with 105 metres of street frontage, returns an annual rent of $318,000. Burgess Rawson director Billy Holderhead last month said: “Investors want single-tenanted freehold investments leased to groups such as Coles Group and it’s rare to have a fully refurbished, large-format liquor store on an important corner in Werribee.” Mr Holderhead said the site also had “significant future development potential”. Although Cr Tony Hooper nominated Cr Peter Maynard for the deputy mayor position, Cr Gibbons won the vote. Cr Gibbons was first elected to the council in 1979, and served as mayor of the Shire of Werribee for two terms from 1983 to 1985 and as mayor of the City of Werribee during 1992 and 1993.

Cr Josh Gilligan has been voted in as Wyndham’s mayor for the next 12 months. Cr Gilligan, 26, who represents the Chaffey ward, was elected at a council meeting last week, after being nominated for the position by Cr Heather Marcus. Seven councillors voted in favour of Cr Gilligan to become mayor, including outgoing mayor Cr Mia Shaw. Cr Henry Barlow was also nominated for the mayoral position by Cr Kim McAliney. He received four votes. Cr Barlow has previously served as mayor three times, while Cr Gilligan has never been mayor. Cr Gilligan, who was elected to the council
in 2016, is a serving board member of the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV), the Wyndham Community Grants Program Evaluation Panel and the Wyndham Youth Council. As well, he chairs the council’s Gambling Reference Advocacy group. Cr Gilligan also works at the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). After donning Wyndham’s mayoral robes at last Wednesday’s council meeting, Cr Gilligan said that he was “incredibly honoured and humbled” to become mayor. Cr Gilligan said that as Wyndham’s population was on track to reach 500,000 people by 2041, the municipality’s biggest challenge would be “building a sustainable city” including trackless trams and an integrated

The state government has announced a $42,000 grant for Wyndham council to support a kindergarten central enrolment system. Foraging for food Finding ingredients in nature and using them in every-day cooking will be the focus of a foraging workshop at The Garden Feast in Werribee next week. Head chef Craig Huntley said that he and sous-chef Jason Brereton, often went “foragingâ€? to find ingredients to use in the cafÊ’s menu. They foraged for food items – including mushrooms, saltbush and seaweed – in coastal parks, forests and marshlands in areas including Williamstown, Altona, Woodend and Point Cook. Mr Huntley said that people who attended foraging workshops at The Garden Feast were often “very shockedâ€? to discover the variety of produce available in nature. He said the cafĂŠ made all of its food in-house,

Tributes flow for Bill By Esther Lauaki Tributes are flowing for well known former police inspector Bill Weatherly, who died suddenly last Friday. Mr Weatherly, 65, is remembered by many for his “larger-than-life” personality and his dedication to the western suburbs. As a long-serving Wyndham inspector, Mr Weatherly implemented family violence units and introduced Justice of the Peace rosters at police stations. He was an Australian Police Medal recipient and founder of the annual police verses Indigenous football match. He sat on recruit selection panels and in 2002 created two administrative positions at Footscray police station where young recruits could work on a 12-month contract to gain on-the-job experience. Police Association Victoria secretary Wayne Gatt offered condolences to Mr Weatherly’s family. “Bill was a respected police veteran who was well known for his contribution to policing in the western suburbs,” Mr Gatt told Star Weekly. “His legacy in life and in the job will live on through his family. “He will be missed.” Lalor MP Joanne Ryan said the community was “in mourning” after learning the news. “To his family, his three beautiful children and former VicPol colleagues, my thoughts are with you at this time.” Outside of his police duties, Mr Weatherly was also a coach for the North Footscray football club as well as a life-member and premiership player for the Melton Bloods football club. last week. “Bill was a past coach and friend to many of the extended Devils community.” James Hohepa-Smith, of the Victorian Moari Wardens, also paid tribute to Mr Weatherly. “We all in the community mourn the loss of a great man who held the community groups
and organisations in high regard especially to our Victoria Maori Wardens in Wyndham,” Mr Hohepa-Smith said. “Thank you for your service and much Aroha [love] to your family and friends as we remember the great work he has made.”

Urgent call for new stations Wyndham council has called for a train station to be built in Sayers Road, Tarneit West “as soon as possible”. The council released a report earlier this month, which said that a total of four new railway stations were needed in Wyndham. The report stated stations would also be needed in Black Forest Road, Wyndham Vale; Davis Road, Tarneit West; and Truganina by 2023. The council report stated: “Wyndham urgently needs to be more connected and for there to be additional train capacity on both the Werribee Line and the Wyndham Vale Line. “This is crucial to unclogging our roads and improving liveability for Wyndham residents.” The report stated that demand for public transport caused overcrowding on Wyndham’s trains, and that carparks at railway stations were “… over capacity, further demonstrating growth in patronage and demand”. “However, creating bigger carparks is not the only solution to overflowing carparks at stations, we need to provide solutions that reduce reliance on cars. “Our residents should have access to frequent bus services that connect with stations, greater connectivity within and outside of Wyndham, and additional train capacity on both the Werribee Line and the Regional Rail Line.” The state government was contacted. Petition to keep snake catcher By Esther Lauaki A small group of residents is calling for Wyndham council to reinstate well known snake catcher Stewart Gatt following the termination of his contract. Wyndham council terminated Mr Gatt’s contract in recent weeks for a number of breaches including incorrect reporting of call-outs and what he said were “clerical errors� made on invoices. Mr Gatt has for the past four years been one of a handful of snake catchers contracted by the
council to provide a free service for residents. Lead campaigner Jeanette Roberts launched an online petition last week which has attracted about 100 signatures in support of Mr Gatt. “Stewy has worked tirelessly to keep us, our pets, and our local public events safe here in Wyndham Vale,â€? Ms Roberts said. Mr Gatt said he was catching about 500 snakes a year across Wyndham. “This is unfortunate because there aren’t that many snake catchers in Wyndham ‌ there are a lot of novices who haven’t got the experience that I do,â€? he told Star Weekly.

Wyndham council uses one contractor that employs at least three snake catchers to service the area. Mr Gatt still provides snake catching services for various councils across the west and north, including Hobsons Bay. Wyndham city amenity and safety manager Richard Maugueret said the termination of Mr Gatt’s contract would not limit or impact the delivery of the service to the community. Culture on display Students from the Polynesian Kids Community Language School will showcase their culture and heritage at a concert in Werribee next week. The school, based at the Wyndham Park Community Centre, teaches Tongan and Samoan language classes on weekends. School director John Palu said the concert – which is titled Celebrating the Journey – would feature up to 40 youngsters. “The children will demonstrate what they have learned throughout the year with speeches, dance and singing,� he said. Mr Palu said he and his wife Sesilia took over the running of the language school, which was previously located in Taylors Lakes, about a year ago. “Wyndham has the second-largest population in Victoria for Polynesians, behind an area in the southeast around Dandenong and Frankston,� Mr Palu said.
“Some of the children we teach have a mixed background, for example a Tongan father and Australian mother, so connecting with others who share their heritage and learning the language and sharing that is the biggest thing.� The Polynesian Kids Community Language School is the only accredited language school in the state that teaches Tongan and Samoan. “Often, the students say they enjoy being able to go back to their grandparents and to speak to them in their language,� Mr Palu said. Surf’s up at Tullamarine By Laura Michell Surfers are just two months away from being able to catch a wave in Tullamarine. Urbnsurf will open its $28 million surf park near Melbourne Airport in January. The park is the first of its kind in the southern hemisphere. Members of Australia’s Olympic surfing team and junior surfing champions were among the first people to catch a wave at the new facility, testing out the surf last week. They were joined by representatives from Melbourne Airport, Surfing Victoria, Surfing Australia and Three Blue Ducks.

Urbnsurf Melbourne is set to play a big foundational role as part of the precinct,” he said.

Charlie’s horrific ordeal By Alesha Capone Charlie is usually full of life, but the little Maltese dog is feeling worse for wear after being attacked by two dogs in Point Cook. Charlie’s owner Margaret was walking near Gershwin Crescent about 4.45pm on November 6 when the terrifying incident occurred. Margaret said that she had Charlie on a lead, when a man walking two “big, black” dogs approached. Margaret said the man had blue string attached to the two dogs’ collars, rather than proper leashes. “Of course, they [the dogs] broke off straight away,” she said. Margaret said she and the man tried to pull the bigger dogs off Charlie when they attacked him. Margaret said she even kicked the other dogs in an effort to get them away from Charlie, but she fell down herself. “It was a nightmare and it seemed to last forever.” Another man also tried to help stop the attack. Margaret said Charlie, who was bleeding, tried to walk away from the attacking dogs and fell over. “My heart just went, I was bawling and screaming, I thought it was the end for him,” she said. She said the two men apologised before walking off with the black dogs. She carried Charlie home and then drove him to the vet. “He has cuts all over him and stitches, they are worried about his thyroid gland, the vets think the dogs may have bitten it,” Margaret said. She said that Charlie, who is 11, was also

having trouble walking. “It breaks my heart to see him like this, he is usually so excited and lively to see everything,” Margaret said. She said she did not want the black dogs to be put down, but for all dog owners to be aware they needed to use proper dog leads and
harnesses when walking their pets. “That’s all I want – I want to get the story out there, that if you have dogs, you have got to restrain them,” she said. “Especially bigger dogs, if you can’t control two, just have one.” Wyndham council said the dog attack had not been reported to them.
Hacketts Road resealed Works have wrapped up on the upgrade of Hacketts Road in Point Cook. The stretch of road between Aviation Road to Tamworth Grove has been sealed and widened, and the intersection of Aviation Road has been upgraded. Cr Mia Shaw said the $4 million project would help to alleviate some of the congestion experienced by motorists. “Before works started, up to 450 vehicles would drive along Hacketts Road daily,” Cr Shaw said. “With the state government ramping up its works on the Duncans Road interchange, and more development taking place to the south of Point Cook, we are expecting this number to grow over the coming months. “That’s why we thought we’d get on the front foot and upgrade the road before it became more congested. The upgraded road will assist in reducing some of the traffic currently experienced between Point Cook, Werribee South, and the Princes Freeway.” Cr Shaw said safety on local roads is one of council’s top priorities. “Safety was definitely at the forefront of our minds when deciding to upgrade Hacketts Road. The improved surface will ensure a smoother and safer drive for motorists in the local area,” she said. “I’d also like to thank drivers for their patience as these works were delivered, with the road closed for the duration of the works.” Esther Lauaki

Fete a family affair Mercy Place Wyndham’s annual fete was a family affair. The fete, held last Saturday, was to raise money for the aged care home. Resident Kathleen Thompson and her devoted family, husband Barry and daughters Debbie and Mandy, have for the past four years spearheaded preparations for the event. Lifestyle co-ordinator Tim Whitmore said the fete was a highlight of the retirement home’s calendar. “Last year Mercy purchased outdoor furniture with the money raised and this year we hope to add to the furniture collection for residents to enjoy,� Mr Whitmore said.
“It was a big day ‌ we go for about five months of hard organisation culminating in the fete which is always a great day. “Kathleen’s family has been involved in most of the fundraising at Mercy Place Wyndham for the past four years. “Without the family’s involvement we wouldn’t be able to have these events.â€? Mr Whitmore thanked representatives from Wyndham council, community members, staff, family and friends who attended. “We made almost $3000 and we thank everyone who came out to support and help.â€? Jubilee’s piazza plans By Alesha Capone A European-style piazza will be built within the Jubilee estate in Wyndham Vale. Developer Lotus Living announced plans for the new neighbourhood, to be called Urban Square, last week. Inspired by Melbourne’s inner-city lifestyle, Urban Square will include a mix of urban living options, all of which will be centered around a plaza of cafes, bars and eateries. The proposed design of the piazza also includes a waterfront promenade, a boulevard, health and wellbeing facilities, childcare facilities and nearby parklands. Urban Square’s 2100-lot neighbourhood will include apartments, townhouses, land and house and land packages. Lotus Living project director Daniel Smith said Urban Square would create major economic and social benefits for the local area. “Lotus Living recognises the need for an iconic residential, lifestyle and dining precinct in the heart of Wyndham Vale,” he said. Construction of Urban Square is due to start about June next year. Jubilee will be home to more 7000 dwellings once its construction is completed, with about 20,000 residents expected to move in across the next 15 years. Plans for the 482-hectare estate include a 5.4-hectare town centre with 8000 square metres of commercial space; a 1.2-hectare neighbourhood centre and 77 hectares of parklands, sports fields and cycling paths.
Townhouse proposal draws objections Thirty-eight objections have been lodged against a proposal to build six double-storey townhouses in a Hoppers Crossing street. Wyndham council has received a planning permit application to build the townhouses at 20 Roseland Crescent. The project has an estimated cost of $1.25 million and would take up 454 square metres of the 1111 square metre site. A planning report submitted alongside the application said each of the townhouses would have two bedrooms and an en suite. The townhouses will also have a second bathroom, powder room, kitchen and meals area. Four of the townhouses will have additional living areas. All the townhouses will have a single-car garage, accessible off a driveway via Roseland Crescent. The planning report also stated: “The proposed development will not cause detriment to the amenity of adjoining properties and will not be out of character within the area. “The proposed design is such that each dwelling although similar in design, matches the proportions of the adjoining buildings and are individualised by the use of materials and colours that propose a cohesive but yet individual nature to the development.” Alesha Capone

Modern, architecturally designed houses for people with complex disability support needs will soon be available in Geelong and Wyndham Vale, with the emergence of a new type of housing funding under the NDIS. Local disability service provider CareChoice is collaborating with an NDIS registered housing provider to offer eight houses – due for early 2020 completion – with four in Wyndham Vale and another four in Mt Duneed, a suburb of Geelong. More houses will be available in more locations next year. Rebecca Cattermole, CareChoice Head of Strategy and Development, is seeking expressions of interest from people with SDA funding – or those who are pursuing it – to become residents in the homes. Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) funding assists people with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs to access specialist housing solutions. “Our CareChoice Homes service aims to provide ‘forever homes’ for people with a disability,” Ms Cattermole says. “This is a lifechanging opportunity to live in a new home for
people who have not had that chance before. “This new wave of disability housing is transformative, moving away from the multi-resident homes of the past. “Participants might be inappropriately housed in a nursing home or community residential unit, or living with ageing parents, and uncertain about their future.” The large three-bedroom houses are designed for two participants, with an onsite overnight accommodation (OOA) room for a support worker. The six-star energy rated houses include structural provisions for ceiling hoists, extra-wide hallways and assistive technology, as well as individual heating and cooling units to accommodate high physical support needs. CareChoice will carefully match eligible participants to live together. “CareChoice’s multidisciplinary team of qualified and experienced support staff will provide ongoing, consistent and round-the-clock support,” Ms Cattermole says. High notes for house prices By Alesha Capone More than 50 houses in Wyndham have been sold for $1 million or more within a 12-month period. Between October last year and September this year, 52 properties topped a $1 million or more sale price, according to figures from the Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV). It’s a drop in million dollar sales compared to the previous 12 months during which 87 houses in the Wyndham area hit the $1 million or more mark. This included 53 houses in Point Cook, 23 in Werribee and five in Hoppers Crossing. REIV president Leah Calnan expected more big sales in the coming months.
“Real estate in Melbourne’s west is heating up, with record low interest rates, easier lending protocols and no more elections on the horizon; conditions are ripe for some big sales. “With clearance rates holding over 70 per cent for over four months, sellers can expect a great price.” Figures from CoreLogic showed that median house prices in Melbourne grew by 2.3 per cent during the month of October, to $650,197.
CoreLogic research director Tim Lawless said this could be attributed to a range of factors, including tighter labour market conditions and stronger population growth relative to the other capitals, coupled with the lowest mortgage rates since the 1950s and improved access to credit. Mr Lawless also said that stamp duty exemptions for first home buyers, who were purchasing properties under a specific price, added additional stimulus to housing demand.
Historic cottage for sale A historic cottage located in the heart of Werribee is on the market. The three-bedroom residence at 22 Carter Avenue is one the cottages, built in the 1940s by the Carter family. The family, successful farmers, constructed an estate of about 66 red brick and cream houses for their employees in Werribee. In the 1920s, the Carter brothers opened a poultry farm in Greaves Street. Jack Carter established a second and larger poultry farm on a new subdivision in Lock Avenue in the early 1940s. Number 22 Carter Avenue, which is on about 587 square metres of land, was one of the first homes planned by the Carter family as part of a sub-division. Ray White Werribee director Michelle Chick said that many of the Carter Cottages had “high ceilings and a lovely feeling of space”. “The façade is the original Carter home but this particular property has a renovated kitchen and bathroom,” she said.
“It’s definitely exciting to be selling the cottage, thinking of the history of the Carter family, the farms and the amount of workers who used to live in the area.” Ms Chick said that whenever a Carter Cottage went up for sale, it caused a lot of interest among potential buyers, “especially those people who love an older home and history”. Bridge a sweet tribute The Tarneit Road bridge has been named after a well known Werribee businessman. The bridge over the rail line near Tarneit station has officially been dubbed John Sweeting Bridge, in honour of the Watton Street businessman who owned Sweetings the Jewellers for more than 50 years. Mr Sweeting was an active member of local sporting clubs as well as supporting nearby schools and Werribee Hospital. David Sweeting, John’s son, said he was proud to witness his father’s legacy. “It’s a great honour to have the bridge named after my late father,” David said. “He was very active community member … involved in many groups including vice chairman and chairman of the Werribee Racing Club, a life member of the Werribee Golf Club and Werribee Bowling Club. “Being a local businessman for more than 50 years, he was a philanthropist as well. He used to donate jewellery to community fundraising events. “He resided in Dohertys Road, and used to travel up and down Tarneit Road and watch the development of the railway line and the various estates that were happening around. “He was savoring the day that he would be able to stand on that bridge from a vantage point where he could see it all complete. “Unfortunately he didn’t make it to see that, but he would be very pleased to be honoured like this.” John Sweeting Bridge was constructed as part of the Regional Rail Link Project. Five other bridges built nearby as part of the project have a similar appearance. To help give the bridge’s unique identities, VicTrack is running a bridge naming competition.

Naming the bridges is designed to help emergency services pinpoint people’s locations, particularly in fire or flood prone areas. The five bridges are all road bridges over the Geelong line, and are at Doherty’s Road, Derrimut Road, Davis Road, Leakes Road and
Ballan Road. Names must commemorate a local community member or event, and follow the criteria set out by the Office of Geographic Names. Once nominations close, the names will be shortlisted and put to a public vote. Details: victrack.com.au/bridge
The sports community has paid tribute to Hoppers Crossing Cricket Club life member Pat Matthey, who died on November 9 after battling bowel cancer. Mr Matthey, 82, was described as a “legend” in a post on the cricket club’s official Facebook page. “We will miss Pat’s regular appearances at the club on a Saturday, showing his support and sharing his stories which we all enjoyed,” the post said. In 2010, Mr Matthey was made a member of the Hoppers Crossing Sports Club Hall of Fame. The cricket club’s third XI medal was named in his honour. He had been involved with the club, both as player and coach. Mr Matthey’s daughter Narrelle said that her father loved sport, regardless of what it was or which team was playing. Alesha Capone

Veteran shares his memories By Alesha Capone Twenty years ago, Kev Curtis and his Australian Defence Force colleagues marked Remembrance Day with a service held at an East Timorese airfield. During Remembrance Day last week the Werribee resident reflected on his 27 year service in the RAAF, including five and a half months as a medic in East Timor as it struggled to gain independence. Mr Curtis was part of the International Force East Timor (INTERFET), a multinational non-United Nations peacemaking taskforce, organised by Australia to address the humanitarian and security crisis in East Timor, following violence by militia forces. In September 1999 he and members of 382 Expeditionary Combat Support Squadron were “dropped off ” at an airfield near Baucau, the second-largest city in East Timor. Their jobs included securing the airfield, and helping to move large aircraft and cargo in and out. They also acted as an aeromedical staging facility, helping the sick and wounded. “Our day-to-day work included getting in a Caribou plane and flying in a loop around the country, to pick-up sick and injured civilians,” Mr Curtis said. “Civilians we would take to a UN hospital, and defence personnel we would take to a military hospital.” The medical team also paid weekly visits to a village near Baucau, to help people suffering leprosy and malaria. He describes the Caribou flight crews as “angels”. He recalled sitting on the plane’s ramp with his feet dangling over the edge, as they returned to the Baucau airfield. “We were always flying away from the

sunset,” Mr Curtis said. “It was a God-send, you could collect your thoughts and think about things.” Mr Curtis said while there were many tough experiences, it was often the humourous things which occurred that servicemen remembered. For example, while in East Timor, Mr Curtis took a photo of a colleague proudly holding a tin of coffee and toilet paper – “two of the most important items people back home could send”.
On Christmas Day, senior command instigated a ‘Wear Your Worst Christmas T-shirt Day’ for the troops and some colleagues kept a “rat scoreboard” while in East Timor. “There were very impressive rats there, we could have saddled them up and ridden them,” he said. Mr Curtis returned from East Timor to Australia on a C-130 Hercules which he and his colleagues fondly dubbed ‘The Freedom Turkey”.
He often drew on his service experiences while teaching defence junior medics and nursing officers in Laverton. “Mental health-wise, I’ve managed to come through pretty unscathed but I have lost some friends,” he said. Some of those were on board the Sea King helicopter Shark 02, which crashed in 2005 while supporting a humanitarian mission on the Indonesian island of Nias, killing nine Australian Defence Force personnel. “I also have a couple of good friends who served in Rwanda when the Kibuye massacre took place, they have a lot of trouble and suffer severely from PTSD,” Mr Curtis said. “Sadly, we lose so many veterans to suicide. “It breaks my heart. SPORT Smooth sailing for Werribee in double header With a number of disruptions in the early rounds of its season, it was important for Werribee to capitalise on a double header weekend of one-day games in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association. The Tigers did just that, winning both games to stay one of three undefeated teams in the competition after five rounds. “Pretty happy with the whole weekend,” Tigers captain-coach Tim O’Brien said. “With the washouts and stuff, we put a big focus to win this weekend because it would put us in a good spot going forward. “To have three wins at the moment is a good start to the season.” After accounting for Melton on Saturday, Werribee looked to repeat the dose on its tough trip to Bayswater in a top four stoush at Bayswater Oval. The Tigers set up their victory with the bat,
compiling an ultra competitive 3-226 off its 45 overs. “The wicket was a bit slow, so it was definitely a good score,” O’Brien said. The Dean brothers – Shaun and Matt – steered Werribee into a position of strength. The Deans negotiated a tough period early in the innings to eke out 97 for the first wicket. Matt was the first to be removed, run out for 55. Shaun battled on to make a century. He batted right through to the last ball of the day to finish on 101. It was a stellar weekend for Shaun, who backed up from his match-winning 64 not out against Melton 24 hours earlier. “He’s a class player,” O’Brien said. “He’s a really important player if we’re going to go deep and play finals.” O’Brien scored a valuable 53 for Werribee. He was also run out.
The only wicket taken by a Bayswater bowler was the dismissal of Shaun Dean on the last ball of the day. While Werribee was confident it had enough to defend, it still had to bowl well to get the spoils. Jonathan Burton (2-21) got the ball rolling for the Tigers, taking the crucial wickets of Bayswater danger-men Blair Allen and Travis Nightingale. “He bowled really well to get the two openers out,” O’Brien said. “He got the two who had been making their runs.” The Werribee spinners, Michael Kelly and O’Brien, who had identical figures of 2-29, delivered the knockout punches. Slow starts hurt United By Lance Jenkinson Is it time for Western United to shake up its starting line-up? Slow starts have been United’s Achilles heel so far in its inaugural A-League season. The issue reared again in an upset 1-0 loss to Newcastle Jets at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday night. “The mindset needs to be a lot better right from kick off,” coach Mark Rudan said. “The intensity, the energy, it has to be there right from the outset, [otherwise] teams will punish you, irrespective of who they are.” For the fourth game in a row, Western United stared a deficit in the face. United was made to pay for its lacklustre start by young Jets striker Angus Thurgate, who scored his second A-League goal in the 36th minute. It was by no means a surprise lead for the Jets, who had been the more proactive side in the first half and were keen to pounce on the sloppy defending of the United backline. Rudan stopped short of suggesting there will be wholesale changes to the starting side because of the slow starts, but it will be up for
discussion this week. “We’ll see what the answer might be throughout the week,” he said. “Like I said, every player has to be on their toes and if we make changes, we make changes.” The silver lining for Western United is its response after conceding early goals. United has shown plenty of character to get back into games, but the frustration is that it takes a jolt in the form of conceding a goal before they click into gear. Rudan sent his team out in the second half with clear instructions and they followed them to the nth degree. In stark contrast to the first half, United moved the ball quicker, got into position faster and played with more variety, utilising both the wings and central avenues to put the Jets defence under pressure. If it was not for a goalkeeping masterclass from experienced Jets custodian Glen Moss, the outcome might have been different for Western United. Western United thought it had found an equaliser when Josh Risdon headed in a goal. However, upon VAR review, United striker Besart Berisha was rightly adjudged offside in
the build-up play and the goal was scrubbed off. There were no complaints from Rudan about the decision. He did, however, rue the poor finishing of United’s attackers. “I thought Connor Pain had a fantastic opportunity,” Rudan said. “He goes low there instead of high, he made it easy for the keeper, then Besart straight after, straight away from the corner. “It was just one of those games where we did everything but score and get ourselves back into the game.” Risdon was praised for his hard work. Returning from Socceroos duty, the winger’s workload was monitored throughout the game and he did not wane from his usual output. “His high speed sprints were unbelievable,” Rudan said. “We were tracking him live today, we had to be mindful of everything that he’s gone through. United sorely missed the creativity of Panagiotis Kone, who was out with a hamstring injury. After five weeks of playing matches in Victoria, Western United will take to the skies to face a desperate Centrals Coast Mariners coming off two heavy defeats.
Two wins in two days has changed the complexion of Hoppers Crossing’s season in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association. The Cats entered the weekend winless but climbed into the top six on the back of their double header weekend swoop. Hoppers Crossing got that winning feeling for the first time on Saturday when it emerged victorious by 37 runs over Taylors Lakes on the road at Lionheart Reserve. The stars of the show for the Cats were Navrojeep Virk and Luke Goegan, who made the bulk of the Cats total of 8-220. Virk was scintillating with 101 off 116 balls, while Goegan produced 71 off 89. Bhaumik Jani took three wickets for the Cats as Taylors Lakes was bowled out for 183. Hoppers Crossing kept its momentum rolling on Sunday, accounting for Mount Waverley by 26 runs away at Mount Waverley Reserve. The Cats posted 6-193 with Sanka Abeyruwan dominant with 88. Khush Talati led a successful defence of the total for the Cats with 3-31 as Mount Waverley was restricted to 8-167 from its 45 overs. While yet to notch a win this season, Seabrook has been competitive in all of its Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 3 games, largely on the back of its strong bowling. The Saints batsmen get their chance to shine this Saturday as they aim to hunt down a 209 victory target set by Sunshine Heights at Bruce Comben Reserve. It is not the last chance saloon for the Saints, but a loss will leave them a long way behind the pack in the chase for a top four berth. Saints president Aaron Spackman has been encouraged by what his team has delivered so far, but knows a win is desperately needed to change the course of their season. “To our guys’ credit, we are winless so far this year, but we’ve been very competitive in all our games,” he said. “I’m just hoping for the boys that we can get
that win sooner rather than later. “We’re hoping the batsmen can do their job and get us to that win.” Seabrook bowled well to restrict Sunshine Heights to 208 in 77.3 overs. The red-hot Heights’ top order batsman Saman Gonawala slipped off the leash to make 73, but the Saints kept the rest of the visiting batsmen in check. “There were a few overs in the middle where Sunshine Heights got away from us with a partnership of 105, which was some very good batting,” Spackman said. “To our bowlers credit, they came back well, led by the captain Dilip Sarkhell and Varinderpal Singh. “They fought back into the game.” Singh was sensational for Seabrook. The opening bowler took his first five-for as a
Saint, finishing with 5-38 off 20.3 overs. “It was a really good bowling effort,” Spackman said. “He was getting that angle across the bat and the ball was working for him. “He bowled his second spell into a pretty strong breeze, so to bowl 12 overs straight into that was a pretty good effort. “In that spell, he might have got all five of his wickets.” Sarkhell was the other weapon with the ball for Seabrook. The medium pacer took 3-47 off 20 overs. Giants’ highs and Lowes By Lance Jenkinson Jon Lowe was the central figure late in the Werribee Giants’ thrilling 6-5 win over Port Melbourne Mariners in the Baseball Victoria summer league division 1 clash at President’s Park on Sunday. Lowe played both the villain and hero roles in a roller coaster ninth inning where his emotions would have swayed dramatically. With the Giants leading by one run entering the ninth, Lowe misjudged a ball in the field and allowed the Mariners their equalising run. It is not often that a player gets a chance for redemption so soon after, but luck had it that Lowe was due to bat for the Giants in the bottom of the ninth. Starter Trent Pantallaresco rode his luck, putting a number of Mariners on base, but did not concede. Pantallaresco got stronger as the game wore on, but his high pitch count forced him out of the game after six innings. “He had a very high pitch count, so we had to get him out of there, otherwise we would’ve kept going with him,” Curnow said. “I think he put eight runners on through six, but his fifth and sixth innings were lights out.” Josh Lee had a wild time in his three innings of relief. While not helped by a Giants fielding error, Lee recorded a blown save. However, Lee can take credit for the win. “He threw well, but they got a few ground balls that got in and a couple of bloopers over the infield, which tends to happen when he pitches because they don’t hit them too well off him,” Curnow said.
“They were able to tie it up and take us into the bottom of the ninth, but Jon was able to come through. “Josh gets a blown save and the win in the end.” Werribee is among the leading pack with a 6-3 record. Winning the series over Port Melbourne and holding that tiebreaker is huge with both clubs in the finals mix. “It was pretty handy to get wins in two out of the three because they’ve been tracking pretty well,” Curnow said. Werribee will turn its attention to a three-game series with St Kilda Saints, starting at President’s Park on Saturday. It will be a special day for the Giants on Saturday with the club holding its annual pink day to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer. “All four teams will be playing at home on Saturday and there will be a bit of a function on Saturday night to raise some money,” Curnow said. “There’s a couple of people at the club who have been affected by it, so we really make a point to raise awareness.”
Werribee will return to the playing greens on Saturday to face top-of-the-ladder MCC after a week’s break in the Bowls Victoria division 1. The Bees have made a bright start to the season, winning four of their six matches, so they will fancy their chances of bringing down the pacesetting MCC. In division 2, Hoppers will be in search of its first win of the campaign when it hosts Strathmore.
Cricket Werribee Centrals has plenty of work to do to secure the points against Kingsville in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 2 clash at Skinner Reserve, which concludes on Saturday. The Centurions were bowled out for 189 in 69.1 overs, while Kingsville cruised to stumps on 0-33 in reply, needing 157 more runs for victory. Mitsubishi Australia has announced details of major revisions to its small SUV, the ASX. Though it’s been on sale here since 2010 it frequently outsells all others in its class. To be frank, the main reason for that is the low prices achieved because it’s capital costs have been paid off. The Japan giant has long been a major player in the SUV and 4WD arenas - think Mitsubishi Outlander, Eclipse Cross, Pajero Sport and Pajero - not to forget the Triton pickup truck which is also selling its wheels off these days. The ASX Exceed and the new GSR model have a 2.4-litre engine with power of 123kW and torque at 222Nm. The others retain the existing 2.0-litre powerplant (110kW / 197Nm) This upgraded Mitsubishi ASX now has the very successful “Mitsubishi Dynamic Shield� front end. In the ASX, black and chrome finishes have been added to the new-shape front bumper and grille. The semi-sporty GSR model has a rear spoiler, inside are black cloth headlining, microsuede and leather-look seats with red stitching. The Exceed has leather seats. An eight-inch display system replaces the previous seven-inch unit. Infotainment includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and DAB radio. The ASX Exceed also gains a Rockford Premium Audio system and TomTomŽ navigation. Active Stability Control is now standard across the Mitsubishi ASX range to improve handling and enhance safety. Electrochromatic rear view mirror and Forward Collision Mitigation, previously part of the ASX with ADAS package, are now standard across the range. The FCM system detects obstructions ahead and issues a visual
