Virtual reality egg show Renay Ahmed and Danyel Cucinotta are giving customers a new insight into egg production. The sisters are third-generation farmers at LT’s Egg Farm in Werribee South, which was founded by their grandparents John and Julie Ahmed in 1969. The farm started as a small free-range operation with about 500 hens and is now home to 18,000 birds. To celebrate the business’ 50th birthday, the family will host a special event at its Wyndham Cache café and deli later this month, which will include the launch of a virtual reality tour of the farm. The sisters said they could not break bio-security laws by taking customers into their sheds to see chickens, so the virtual reality tour was the next best thing. “We’re not here to change people’s opinions, we are here to show our community – who are already purchasing our eggs – what we do here,” Mrs Cucinotta said. The launch day will be held Saturday, November 30 from 9-11am and 1-3pm. Wyndham Cache is located at 243 K Road, Werribee South. Cricket club hit for six By Alesha Capone Werribee Cricket Club will be forced to find a new home under Wyndham council’s $20.35 million proposed upgrade of Chirnside Park. The draft master plan for the park, released last week, includes a proposal to relocate cricket “off-site” and recommends building a new cricket facility in the East Werribee Employment Precinct, capable of supporting the demands of large spectator crowds. Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw said the Chirnside Park master plan would be implemented in stages, across the next 10 years. Other proposals in the draft master plan include adding a circuit path around the football
oval, installing new spectator ‘hardstand’ areas; an undercover spectator viewing area; players, coaches and officials shelters; ticket booth; public toilets and a plaza area. The proposed upgrade also includes replacing the lawn bowls’ north turf green with an undercover synthetic green, to allow year-round use, and building a new bowling pavilion. The existing pavilion would be demolished to make way for a carpark. Wyndham’s sports development portfolio holder, Cr Peter Maynard, said the draft master plan called for concrete surfaces at two of Chirnside Park’s tennis courts to be replaced with synthetic surfaces. “This will allow Werribee’s budding tennis

champions to serve an ace on both hard and soft courts,” Cr Maynard said. Other ideas outlined in the draft plan are: • Creating new areas to accommodate up to 500 temporary seats during events. • Realigning the Werribee River Shared Trail away from existing trees, upgrading lighting and widening the path to at least three metres. • Investigating options for the Werribee & District Angling Club to refurbish or redevelop its existing building “to activate the area adjacent to Bungie’s Hole for the whole community”. New “nature play area facilities” are also proposed near Bungie’s Hole, which was used for swimming during the early 1900s. • Enhancing the Werribee River and Bungie’s

Hole with weed removal, bank stabilisation and re-vegetation. “Council wants to celebrate Bungie’s Hole as a welcoming place to unwind and socialise, potentially through outdoor seating and landscaping,” Cr Shaw said. “Werribee may be changing – with the population on track to reach 90,000 by 2041 – but this master plan will ensure Chirnside Park continues to be a key community gathering place for years to come.” Werribee Cricket Club was contacted for comment. Public consultation on the draft master plan will end on December 20. Details: https:// theloop.wyndham.vic.gov.au/

Stewy struck off the books By Esther Lauaki Wyndham council has terminated the contract of well known snake catcher Stewart Gatt. Mr Gatt has for the past four years been one of a handful of snake catchers contracted by the council to provide a free snake removal service for residents. Mr Gatt’s contract was recently terminated for a number of breaches including incorrect reporting of call-outs and what he said were “clerical errors” he made on invoices. “There were about half a dozen invoices that were incorrect and, once we were made aware of

them, those were fixed up,” he told Star Weekly. “I was told by a DELWP wildlife officer that I did not have to record the removal of blue-tongued lizards but Wyndham council was advised otherwise and this was also seen as a breach of contract.” Mr Gatt said in another instance, he had failed to report to wildlife authorities that an
injured python he collected from Point Cook had died. “I used to have a full-time job, but I gave up that job in order to service the Wyndham community 24 hours, seven days a week,” he said. “Wyndham council was about 70 per cent of my business and we were catching 500 snakes a year. “This is unfortunate because there aren’t that many snake catchers in Wyndham … there are a lot of novices who haven’t got the experience that I do. Up until the day my contract was terminated, I was working really hard to offer new ideas to the council to improve the free
snake catching service in Wyndham.” Wyndham council uses one contractor that employs at least three snake catchers to service the area. Mr Gatt still provides snake catching services for Hobsons Bay and Brimbank councils. He said he would continue to operate his business privately in Wyndham. Wyndham city amenity and safety manager Richard Maugueret said the termination of Mr Gatt’s contract would not limit or impact the delivery of the service to the community. To access the free council service, residents should call 9742 0777.
Plastic bags spoil recycling efforts

Going ga ga for new pit College student PJ said it took about eight weeks to construct the pit. “After building it, if we see a massive smile on the faces of the younger pupils, it makes us feel happy,” he said. Fellow student, Logan, said: “We were honoured to be able to make such a structure”. Students Sam and Ian said they had been involved with Hands On Learning – a program which gets students out of the classroom for practical education one day a week – for three years. “Being in Hands On learning has helped with
my teamwork skills and helped me open up to other people,” Sam said. “When I first started, I was really quiet, shy and didn’t really talk to anyone, and as the years went on I became more confident and started talking to people more,” Ian said. The pit project was part of two programs which work with students at Werribee Secondary College, TRY Mentoring and Hands On Learning. Bunnings in Werribee supplied materials free of charge, to build the pit. Alesha Capone

Pupils at a Werribee Primary School are going ga ga over a new addition to their schoolgrounds. The pupils were recently gifted a Ga Ga pit as part of a program with Werribee Secondary College. About 15 year 10 students from the college installed the pit last Wednesday. Most of the students said they had never heard of Ga Ga, a ball game which is played inside an octagon-shaped enclosure, until they started building the pit, but they were happy with the results.
Wyndham council is reminding residents to stop putting their recycling in bags this National Recycling Week (November 11-17). One of the biggest reasons recyclables are sent to landfill in Wyndham is because residents put goods into a plastic bag, before putting them into a recycling bin. Wyndham’s environment and sustainability portfolio holder, Cr Heather Marcus, said that when the council inspected 12,003 household bins, 70 per cent contained soft plastics or bagged recyclables. “If recyclables are placed into a plastic bag, the staff at sorting facilities are not able to open the bags due to health and safety risks,” she said. “Council advises residents to place recyclables loosely into the recycling bin – maybe throw them into a cardboard box under the sink and when it’s full, tip the recyclables into your recycling bin or buy a separate recycling bin for your kitchen. “The best place to recycle your soft plastics such as food wrappers, plastic bags, bread bags, and chip packets is at the designated soft package recycling bins at major supermarkets.” Cr Marcus said recycled goods could also be re-used to make new items. “These get turned into useful products such as park furniture, so by disposing of soft plastics properly you are not only contributing to better recycling, you are also helping to re-purpose,” she said. Crackdown on truck parking By Esther Lauaki Truck drivers and heavy vehicle owners are being asked not to park outside their homes in residential areas after the council handed out nearly 500 fines this year across Wyndham. Safer communities portfolio holder Kim McAliney said heavy vehicles of more than 4.5 tonne in weight, or 7.5 metres or longer, such as trucks, caravans, trailers, boats, or buses, must not be parked in built-up areas for longer than one hour. “This means you can’t take your work truck home and park it on the road outside your property and you also need to keep your boats and caravans on your property or at a suitable location off the road, Cr McAliney said. “Many residents may be surprised to learn that it is an offence under Victorian Road Rules to park these vehicles in residential, commercial and industrial areas. “Council is responsible for issuing infringements for these offences and 475 were handed out since January this year. She said that work and leisure vehicles should be parked in designated spaces. “While it may be convenient for residents to drive their work vehicles home or leave the boat out on the road while using the garage, these vehicles pose a hazard on our roads, Cr McAliney said. “They can block vision when residents are exiting their driveways or approaching intersections, which could result in a collision. “From council’s perspective, residential streets are not designed to constantly bear the weight of heavy loads, and this can cause structural damage to the roads. Report prohibited heavy vehicle parking: 9742 0777 or submit a service request online bit.ly/2JFR9Bd
Six seasons of art Pupils at a Werribee school have created a colourful Indigenous Community Art Project: The Six Seasons. Wyndham Park Primary School conducted an artist-in-residence project with indigenous artist Edwina Green throughout the year. Pupils from grades 3 to 6 have collaborated with Ms Green to pay homage to the six seasons – which are traditionally marked by indigenous Australians, as part of a yearly cycle. The pupils have painted water tanks located throughout the school grounds with murals reflecting the six seasons, which are known as Birak (first summer – season of the young), Bunuru (second summer – season of adolescence), Djeran (autumn – season of adulthood), Makuru (winter season of fertility), Djilba (first spring – season of conception) and Kambarang (second spring – season of birth). Aboriginal people in Victoria have lived their lives according to these seasons for thousands of years. Wyndham mayor, Cr Mia Shaw, attended an assembly at the school to celebrate the completion of the Indigenous Community Art Project last week. The paint used in creating the murals was donated by Haymes Paint. Saamir and Lilyana with Edwina Green and one of the new murals. (Damjan Janevski) 200081_03

Hearts open for teacher By Alesha Capone The community has rallied behind a much-loved teacher who has been diagnosed with two types of cancer. Sesilia Palu, a grade 6 teacher at Truganina P-9 College, was diagnosed with bladder and breast cancer earlier this year. Her husband John said Sesilia started chemotherapy last week. Since May, he has been “on and off work caring for Sesilia and their two children. “It’s had huge impact on us, he said. “It definitely came out of the blue. An online fundraising campaign to help support the family was started in August by Mr Palu’s brother David. It has so far raised more than $15,000. Mr Palu said that he and Sesilia were grateful to everyone who had donated. He described his wife as someone who was always trying to help other people. “It’s just the way she is, she’s always looking after everyone else and not herself, he said. Mr Palu said that Sesilia, 42, had already undergone two major surgeries and a mastectomy. He said she was declared clear of cancer, but doctors could not be 100 per cent sure, as some cancers could remain undetectable within the body. He said that Sesilia’s oncologist had recommended her best option was to undergo a course of aggressive chemotherapy, in the hopes that her body would be totally cleared of cancer. Mr Palu said that his wife’s students and colleagues at Truganina P-9 College “miss her heaps. He said they were hoping that Sesilia would be able to visit the school soon.

New Saturday train service A new weekend train service will be added to the Geelong line, which runs through Tarneit and Wyndham Vale stations. Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly last week announced that a new service would be added to the line on Saturday mornings, from December. The service will depart Geelong at 10.16am, stopping at all stations except Ardeer, and arrive at Southern Cross station at 11.20am. “An extra Saturday service beginning December will be welcomed by Tarneit passengers who currently travel on a busy Warrnambool line train, Ms Connolly said. She said Wyndham passengers would soon see other minor changes to the train timetable, designed to give commuters more certainty in planning their journey. Trains on the Werribee line will also start stopping at Southern Cross station earlier on Sunday mornings. Previously, trains on the Werribee line ran express through to Flinders Street early on Sunday mornings. “These changes are part of a $4.5 billion investment by the Andrews government since 2015 for new and upgraded trains, trams and supporting infrastructure to transform the public transport network, Ms Connolly said. The new timetables will be available at ptv.vic.gov.au before the changes are introduced. Alesha Capone

Aged care residents brought all the glamour of the Spring Racing Carnival to Mercy Place Wyndham Oak’s Day celebrations last week. Mercy Place hosted a Fashions on the Field event to wrap up a week of race day-themed festivities. Lifestyle co-ordinator Tim Whitmore said staff and the residents look forward to the annual celebration. “This year, residents and staff participated in Mercy Place Wyndham’s very own fashions on the field contest which had some stiff competition as residents strutted their stuff in their best racewear and fascinators, Mr Whitmore said.
Werribee singer Elia Cannizzo serenaded the crowd with songs from the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s. The classic Past The Post Melbourne Cup quiz, a sweep presentation and marquee-style happy hour rounded out the week’s entertainment. “The Spring Racing Carnival is such a highlight for our residents, Mr Whitmore said. “Seeing everyone in their best racewear brings a flurry of colour and excitement. “It’s the start of our busy festive season that lasts all the way until Christmas. Mercy Place Wyndham will be holding its annual fete on November 16.
Four motorists were detected misbehaving on Wyndham’s roads on November 1. A 33-year-old Tarneit man lost his licence for 12 months after being detected driving at 110km/h in a 60km/h zone. A Werribee woman, 24, was detected driving at 135km/h in a 100km/h zone and a Tarneit man, 30, was caught speeding at 113km/h in an 80km/h zone. A Werribee woman, 55, had her licence cancelled for six months after being caught drink driving.

Young boxers win big By Alesha Capone Two Wyndham teenagers have won big at the Australian Boxing Championships. Marissa, 17, and Kyliesha, 14, both placed first in their respective categories at the championships last month. Marissa said Boxing Victoria held two selection events before the Australian Boxing Championships, in March and September. The state title winners flew to Queensland for the national event. “Some people had multiple fights and some people only had a straight final throughout the week. “I had a straight final which means I only had one fight to win the title, Marissa said. “I felt so much incredible energy walking out and hearing my name chanted. “I’ll never forget Team Victoria roaring when the ref lifted my hand in the air. “The hardest part about the experience was definitely just overcoming my own personal battles and just getting my head right. “We want to be acknowledged as successful indigenous women. Marissa won the 64kg youth women’s category. She trains every day, and completed her year 12 exams after the nationals. Kyliesha, who trains at the Wyndham Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC), won the under-15 54kg category at the nationals. “The nationals was an awesome experience and I learnt a lot from it, she said. “The nationals didn’t really bring any challenges to me, apart from the fact it was my first fight away from my home coach. “Up next I’m just going to prepare to have a big 2020 and to hopefully win again next year.

Chemical collection day Wyndham residents can rid their homes of toxic household chemicals. The council is holding a collection day on November 16 so residents can ditch harmful substances through a safe, free and easy service. A Detox your Home collection point has been set up at Hoppers Crossing. Environment and Sustainability portfolio holder Heather Marcus said household chemicals could be dangerous and were an unnecessary fire accelerant. “These toxic substances can pollute the environment for future generations, which is why residents should take advantage of the free Detox your Home service to safely dispose of unwanted items, Cr Marcus said. “Chemicals can explode, ignite, leak or mix with other chemicals in rubbish bins and if they are poured down the drain, they can pollute waterways, harm animals and vegetation and contaminate drinking water supply, she said. Detox your Home is administered by Sustainability Victoria in partnership with council and is funded by the Victorian landfill levy. The products collected are diverted from landfill. The collection program at Hoppers Crossing will operate between 9am and 1pm. The exact location will be emailed to people who register at sustainability.vic. gov.au/detoxyourhome Esther Lauaki

Tree plantings a nod to history By Alesha Capone A section of the Princes Highway will be planted with trees in a design reflecting the former Calder Memorial and 1918 Avenue of Honour. Wyndham council last week adopted a tree master plan for the section of highway which runs between Werribee Street to the Princes Freeway, and adjacent to the Riverwalk estate entrance. According to the council, this part of the Princes Highway contained remnant trees from the Calder Memorial plantings from

the 1920s-30s and some remaining trees from a World War I Avenue of Honour. The Calder Memorial trees are believed to have been in memory of William Calder, the fi rst chairman of the Country Roads Board. The WWI trees were planted in August, 1918.
A significant number of the trees were removed by Development Victoria in 2017 as part of the adjacent Riverwalk development. “However, prior to this there were several trees along the stretch that were already dead or in decline,” a council report states. “Much of the roadside landscaping and tree plantings are now in a relatively poor and fragmented state. “There has been significant community concern regarding the state of this roadside and the loss of amenity and heritage from the tree removals.” The Princes Highway Tree Master Plan has
been developed to guide stakeholders who will reinstate the trees and landscape the highway. “It seeks to create a boulevard-style feel to the strip, with the design of the tree plantings reflecting the former Calder Memorial and 1918 Avenue of Honour tree planting,” the report states. Plantings will alternate between trees with light and dark-coloured trunks, reflecting the former Calder Memorial design. The masterplan also includes a cycling and walking path, seating and signage acknowledging the memorial planting.
Market celebrates Africa The Village Market, which celebrates African communities, culture and wildlife, will return to Werribee Open Range Zoo. The popular market will be held on the first Saturday of each month until April next year. It will include activities and experiences for the whole family including hair braiding, banana leaf weaving, henna tattooing and traditional games. Stalls stocked with handmade items will feature beaded sandals, hanging planters and African fabric tops and skirts. Each market showcases a different African community, including South Sudanese, Ghanaian and Ethiopian, with traditional musicians and dancers performing each month. Funds raised at the market help to support local communities and fight wildlife extinction. The markets will be held from 10.30am to
3pm on the first Saturday of each month until April, 2020 Admission is free with a general admission zoo ticket (children under 16 are free on weekends). Alesha Capone

Bill Bloomcamp at the Retired Police Lunch at Hoppers Crossing. (Damjan Janevski) 200413_02
Police remembered Police veterans shared stories from their days serving in the west at a recent event in Hoppers Crossing. Former superintendent Bill Bloomcamp, 91, was among 120 police who worked across the western districts who attended the 37th Annual Retired Police Luncheon. Event committee member Gary Jose, a superintendent before retiring 30 years ago, said the event was an opportunity to reflect on the old times and stay connected. “We all just get together and reminisce and it’s a good way for us to stay in touch,” Mr Jose
said. “When I was a detective I served in Footscray, Sunshine and Werribee and Altona prior to becoming a Superintendent. “Some of the people at the lunch are those I worked with, others I met through the lunches. “We talk about the old times.” The first lunch was held at the Yarraville Club in October 1983 as a result of a meeting convened by Lawrie Carn, who was the chief inspector at Yarraville. Search for ‘heroic’ woman By Alesha Capone A mother who says her 14 year-old son was threatened by a group of youths at McDonalds in Tarneit is searching for a woman who came to his aid. The mother (who asked not to be named) said her son went to the McDonalds, on Derrimut Road, about 4pm on October 20, while she attended the shopping centre across the road. She said as her son walked out of the restaurant a group of 10 to 15 youths – whom he described as “African” in appearance and aged about 15 to 16 years old – followed him out to the carpark.
“One put his arm around my son and started feeling in his pockets,” the mother said. She said the youths started leading her son towards a side street and told him: “If you don’t come with us, we’ll hook you.” As this occurred, a woman driving into the carpark stopped her vehicle and asked the boy if he was OK. “She got out and said, ‘Leave him alone’, and they [the youths] scattered,” the mother said. “She was very, very brave, a lot of people wouldn’t have gotten involved.” The woman offered to drive her son home, but instead walked with him to the shopping centre.
The mother said she would like to thank the woman, who was named Bec and drove a silver car. “At the time, I was mostly worried about my son, and didn’t think to get her phone number,” she said. The incident has been reported to police. Wyndham Police Inspector Marty Allison said the Tarneit McDonalds “used to give us a lot of heartache back in the day, two or three summers ago”. In December 2016, the McDonalds made headlines when a brawl involving up to 150 youths took place at the site. But Inspector Allison said police were now
rarely called to the McDonalds. “They’ve worked really hard to engage with the community and employed a lot of young African people as well, we hardly go there now,” he said. A McDonald’s spokesperson said: “The safety and security of our people and customers is our number one priority. We have a number of security measures in place, such as CCTV, and are assisting the police with their investigation into this incident. “We do not tolerate any form of violence or abuse in our restaurants, and any anti-social behaviour will be reported to the relevant authorities.”
Happy birthday Probus The Sanctuary Lakes Point Cook Probus Club celebrated its fifth anniversary last week. Club members gathered at The Brook Point Cook for the celebrations, which included a birthday cake and guest speakers from the Rotary Club of Laverton Point Cook. Probus club secretary Gaye Edmonds said the group, which is for retired people, started in October 2014. “Local Rotarians Fay Lunn, Kevin Birtles and Ian Brown decided it would be a good thing to have a local Probus,” Ms Edmonds said. The club now has 120 members, who participate in activities including day-trips to places such as National Gallery and Supreme Court, events, lunches, excursions, overseas trips and listening to monthly guest speakers. “The guest speakers are often very inspiring,” Ms Edmonds said.
Guest speakers at the club have included police officers, lawyers, veterans and young entrepreneurs. Ms Edmonds said the Probus Club, which is auspiced by the Rotary Club of Laverton Point Cook, gave members the opportunity to participate in social interaction and activities with others in the community. “It’s a beautiful group of people who enjoy fun, fellowship and friendship together and the committee is great,” she said. Transplant brings joy By Ewen McRae Daniel Manic has had issues with his liver since he was a baby, but a transplant last year has given him a new lease on life. At just six-months-old, Daniel was diagnosed with Glycogen Storage Disease, a rare condition, similar to diabetes, that meant his body struggled to store sugars. With an often swollen liver, he said he always had a big belly, had to constantly monitor his diet, and as a kid he couldn’t take part in many of the sports his friends were playing. “I couldn’t play physical contact sport, because a little tap basically winded me,” Daniel said. “It was pretty shit to be honest. I had to be so careful. “I had a pretty strict diet. The worst thing was drinking cornflour mixed with water, which is probably the worst thing you could ever drink, but I needed it to keep my sugars up. “I went a bit off the rails as a teenager, just staying home all the time and didn’t want to do anything with my life, but I got it together.” In his early 20s, Daniel’s doctor told him he would likely be dead within eight years if he didn’t have a liver transplant, but it was nearly two years later before he put himself on the waiting list for the operation. “My mum was in the room and she burst into tears, but for me it didn’t really register,” he said. “It wasn’t until about 2017 that things changed and I put myself on the list.” Daniel had a transplant mid-way through 2018. At the same time, he was expecting the birth of his first child.
Hunter, arrived three months after his transplant. Just over a year since his transplant, and with Hunter about to turn one, Daniel is looking forward to many more years ahead. “I’ve had no complications,” he said. “I don’t have to drink cornflour any more, which is the best thing, and I’ve got a flat stomach for the first time in my life.

I’m grateful for what they’ve given me. I’ll never forget it - Daniel Manic
’’
“It’s been pretty life-changing. To have Hunter sitting here with me, it’s been a big year.” While organ donation in Australia is anonymous, Daniel wrote a letter to the family of his liver donor to thank them for giving him a second chance. “I struggled to put into words how I felt,” he said. “I said thank you, and told them how it had helped me. I’m obviously sorry for their loss, but I’m grateful for what they’ve given me. I’ll never forget it.” The National Thank You Day, to honour all organ and tissue donors and their families, is this Sunday, November 17. The Mental Health Foundation Australia has announced $40,000 in small grants to help youth mental health in Wyndham. The money was raised at the Avalon Dance Stars on the Floor competition, held in Hoppers Crossing in July. The event was chaired by Mental Health Foundation Australia’s multicultural ambassador Heather Marcus and dedicated to the memory of her sister Nanette Smith. The $40,000 grants will be available to individuals and organisations operating within Wyndham’s municipal boundaries, which can demonstrate their effective interventions to promote youth mental wellbeing. Grants of between $500 and $5000 will be available. Activities requesting funding must start after February 1 next year and be completed by October 31 next year. Applications for the Youth Mental Health grants will close on December 15 at 6pm. Applicants will receive a notification about the outcome of their applications via email. Questions about the grants can be emailed to funding@mhfa.org.au or call the Mental Health Foundation Australia on 1300 643 287.
It’s something that has stuck with me

- Ivana Vasiljevic
Ivana said sports had always played a major role in her life. “I’ve been playing basketball since I was six years old,” she said. “I love it so much. It’s something that has stuck with me since I started all those years ago. “My older brother DJ is currently playing in Florida at Miami University and I’ve constantly looked up to him. “My dad grew up playing professional handball in Europe … and he played basketball as well in Bosnia. Mum also played soccer socially, growing up.” Ivana plays for the Diamond Valley Eagles in Greensborough. She wants to major in physiotherapy at either Florida International University in Miami or San Jose State University in California. She is headed overseas next year to explore her options.

He said his love of drawing began when he lived in South Sudan as a child, when he and his friends would draw in the sand at school. John thanked the Wyndham community, his family and Manor Lakes College. “My mother, Deborah, also really inspires me – she is a single mother with seven kids, I’m the youngest.” John said he would also like to thank youth worker Reece Gains, who helped him to apply for the scholarship. Talented teen artist John Mathet has been presented with a scholarship from the Wyndham Park Community Centre. The Werribee centre launched the scholarship earlier this year, in honour of its founding member and community volunteer, the late Maggie McInnes. The scholarship aims to provide a Wyndham student from a current-generation refugee family with $3000 to assist them in a career or studies in artistic-based information technology. Eighteen-year-old John, who is completing year 11 at Manor Lakes College, said the scholarship would help him a lot. John creates digital art as well as traditional painting and drawing. He said the scholarship funds could go toward purchasing an iPad Pro.

Family violence on the rise By Alesha Capone Wyndham’s fast-growing population is one of the reasons behind the municipality’s increasing rates of family violence, according to police. Family violence crimes reported in the municipality have increased by more than 60 per cent across five years. Wyndham police recorded 842 family violence assaults in the 2018-19 financial year, compared to 515 during the 2013-14 financial year.
Wyndham’s Local Area Commander, Acting Inspector Brett Kahan, said family violence is a crime that affects all communities. “The rapidly growing population in the area of Wyndham certainly contributes significantly to the high recording of family violence incidents in the area,” he said. “The increase in family violence criminal incidents can also be partially attributed to the increasing confidence in seeking help from family violence services, and reporting to police. Victoria Police has come a long way in developing our responses to these crimes,
raising community awareness and challenging attitudes supporting violence, providing safety to victims and referring them to support services so they get the assistance they need. “Regardless, we are continuing to see unacceptable numbers of women and children who are not safe in their own homes.” Acting Inspector Kahan said Wyndham police have progressively specialised their response to family violence “in recognition of the risk and complexity that these incidents pose”. “We also have established an enhanced investigative approach to family violence
with the establishment of Family Violence Investigation Units (FVIUs), which are made up of dedicated detectives and intelligence practitioners,” he said. “The FVIUs are made of intelligence practitioners and dedicated detectives who have three main functions; investigate serious and complex investigations, manage high-risk, complex and cold cases and support general duties police and specialist units.” If someone is in immediate danger call triple-0. For assistance, Women’s Health West on 9689 9588.
Altona’s new cop shop Altona’s new 24-hour police station is due to open in April and will house the divisional highway patrol, along with the uniform section and crime investigation unit from Altona North. Westgate Highway Patrol, which currently operates out of Wyndham North police station, will relocate to Altona North. Hobsons Bay Inspector Tim O’Connor said the new Altona station, in Galvin Street at the western end of Civic Parade, was designed to accommodate growth over the next 50 years. “It will really give us a bigger footprint in that Altona area with police movements in and out,” he said. The new double-storey station will replace the ageing Altona North police station in Cooper Avenue. “Altona North is an old building, it’s well and truly outlived its use-by date,” Inspector O’Connor said.
“It will really give us better facilities that we need to support the local community, and it’s been designed to support growth over the next 50 years.” The state government provided more than $18 million to relocate and build the police station, Altona MP Jill Hennessy said. “The new $18 million station will support local police as they continue to provide strong community policing across Melbourne’s booming western suburbs,” she said. The last police station in Altona was at the corner of Blyth Street and Valletta Lane and closed in 1978. Prior to that, there was a station on the corner of Blyth and Sargood streets. Altona Village Traders Association president Kim Walsh, a former detective, said businesses would be pleased to have a police station closer to Altona beach and shopping precincts. Goya Dmytryshchak

Cycling strategy to identify gaps By Alesha Capone Wyndham council has signalled its intention to conduct audits of the municipality’s cycling and pedestrian path network, to identify missing links and infrastructure issues. The audits commitment is part of the draft Wyndham Pedestrian and Cycle Strategy, which the council approved last week for public consultation. Information collected in the audits will be used to inform future capital works programs within Wyndham.
The strategy states that data from the 2012-2016 Victorian Integrated Survey of Travel and Activity showed that 70,000 walking and cycling trips were made in the Wyndham area during that time. The document stated that people may be deterred from taking short, local trips due to “connectivity issues” including non-continuous, narrow and unmaintained footpaths; lack of supporting infrastructure such as lighting, public toilets, water fountains and seating areas and safety concerns. “Wyndham’s current network has gaps that
limit connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists,” the draft strategy stated. “Residents report that some sections of footpaths and cycle routes are missing and that connections are often poor, this can be a disincentive to walking and cycling for transport and can present barriers for people with limited and restricted mobility.” The draft strategy said that increasing the number of residents who walk or cycle to work could help to reduce road congestion in Wyndham. “In 2018, 20 per cent of Wyndham residents
travelling to work or study by car reported a travel time of 90 minutes or more to and from work or study,” the draft strategy stated. “Most residents reported a travel time of 30-60 minutes to and from work or study.” Councillor Heather Marcus described the draft master plan as “really fabulous”. “It is important that we get more people out there on their bicycles,” she said. Public consultation on the draft Wyndham Pedestrian and Cycle Strategy is proposed to take place over four weeks from mid-November to mid-December.
Garden gurus Students at Point Cook Senior Secondary College are keen to go green. VCAL students at the college have designed and planted 500 native plants in a “Habitat Garden” within the school grounds. The college’s VCAL co-ordinator and teacher Bryce Flannery said Wyndham council donated 100 plants for the project. “The students have been involved in Wyndham Council Habitat Heroes program, where they learned about locally native plants and how to create a garden,” he said. “Students designed the garden themselves, learnt about habitats, eco systems, local wildlife and conducted a biodiversity audit of the school.” Mr Flannery said the results of the audit showed a need to increase and revegetate the local wildlife corridor within Point Cook. “We are also hoping that we can teach the local community how we can conserve,
protect, monitor, and/or manage it sustainably by encouraging others to visit our garden and show them what we have achieved,” he said. Mr Flannery said the garden project required the students to use multiple skills. “The project provided year 11 VCAL students the opportunity to learn and build their employability skills of problem solving, critical thinking, digital literacy, communication and presentation skills, teamwork, financial literacy project management and enthusiasm for ongoing learning,” he said. Smart strategy success A Wyndham council strategy which outlines how new technology will help the municipality in the future has been recognised with an international award. The Wyndham Smart City Strategy 2019-2024, which was released in June, won the ‘Smart Cities Strategy’ category at the Smart Cities Council Australia New Zealand awards ceremony in Sydney last month. The award recognises government organisations which are guiding smart cities and digital transformation with a strategy driven by liveability, workability and sustainability. Wyndham council’s strategy was recognised as “a blueprint for the deployment of emerging technology – but one co-designed with the community, innovators, researchers, vendors and local businesses”. Wyndham’s smart city portfolio holder, Cr Aaron An, said it was “a fantastic honour to be recognised for our achievements and progress”. “Our community-first approach to using digital technologies is a blueprint for transforming growing communities into modern, smart cities,” he said. Cr An said the council’s strategy “also demonstrates and outlines how council will work towards solving challenges such as transport and congestion, our local environment and the use of emerging and smart technology to modernise and improve services such as parking, community engagement, waste collection and infrastructure management”. “We have already introduced smart technology to improve planning and capital outcomes through virtual reality, make our customer service more accessible through multilingual virtual assistants like Microsoft Translator – and this is just the beginning,” he said.

Other smart city technology case studies which have already been rolled out in Wyndham include smart parking (information about parking bay availability); smart sensors (the use of sensors and data analytics are being deployed for purposes such as optimising service delivery in waste collection,
predicting drain maintenance requirements and optimising watering schedules for tree management) and digital literacy and inclusion (such as public Wi-Fi, digital training sessions and courses in online safety). Details: www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/ smart-city-strategy
Road works on track Wyndham council is rolling out its $11 million local roads program at a cracking pace with 19 roads resealed in the first quarter of the financial year. Mayor Mia Shaw said the council upgraded the roads in Werribee, Point Cook, Truganina and Hoppers Crossing to ensure they were smooth and safe. “Improving local roads is one of the key priorities of this year’s council budget, with council investing a total of $11 million for road resurfacings and reconstructions,” Cr Shaw said. “This is in addition to our larger-scale road projects, such as the $4 million widening of Hacketts Road. “With 64 per cent of Wyndham residents driving to and from work each day, it’s essential our local roads are regularly assessed and maintained.” Cr Shaw said in addition to the resurfacing projects, the council was currently redeveloping Barklya Court, Hilden Close and Melaleuca Drive in Hoppers Crossing and Thames Boulevard, Hepburn Street and Chervil Street in Tarneit. The six roads will be laid with new asphalt while Thames Boulevard, Hepburn Street and Chervil Street will also have new footpaths installed. Wyndham City is responsible for maintaining neighbourhood roads, while the state government is responsible for major roads, including highways. Details: bit.ly/2PCjBYs Esther Lauaki

Your time to talk about trains By Alesha Capone The RACV is asking the state’s train users to make their voices heard in the bi-annual On Track survey. The survey provides the opportunity for commuters to rate their local stations and train journeys. In the 2017 survey, Wyndham Vale train station placed first out of Melbourne’s suburban stations, with a ranking of 8.97 out of 10. In comparison, Aircraft station was ranked

- Peter Kartsidimas third-worst, with a rating of 4.2. Hoppers Crossing station scored 5, Werribee station 5.2, Tarneit station 6 and Williams Landing station 6.7. RACV senior manager transport, planning and infrastructure Peter Kartsidimas said the
On Track survey gave public transport users the opportunity to advocate for improvements to the train network. “Train users can tell us what they really think. What is the state of your local station? Does it need repairs? Do you feel safe? Is there enough parking? he said. “We also want to know if your train is overcrowded, frequently late or regularly cancelled. The RACV uses the survey results to campaign for better transport projects,
including train station upgrades and improved services. “The results of this survey can help us directly influence future planning and improvements in rail facilities, Mr Kartsidimas said. “Stations such as Donnybrook, Merinda Park and most recently Hallam have all been listed for upgrades after featuring in previous On Track surveys. The On Track survey will close on Wednesday, November 20. Cash for causes Eighteen community and not-for-profit groups in Wyndham have shared in $24,000 funding from the Westbrook Community Fund. The community fund’s annual presentation night was held at the Dennis Family Corporation’s Westbrook estate in Truganina last week. Dennis Family Group managing director, Grant Dennis, said this year was the second year that the fund has provided funding to applicants from in and around Truganina, Tarneit and Williams Landing. “A vibrant healthy community takes more than bricks and mortar, he said. “It requires a range of services delivered by community groups and associations. “But while the work done by these groups – and the contributions they make to local communities, is invaluable, it often goes unrecognised. Among this year’s grant recipients are sports clubs, African-Australian Family and
Parenting Support Services, the Victorian Bangladeshi Community Foundation, the Cancer Council Victoria and the Truganina Fire Brigade. Another successful applicant was the Truganina South Primary School. School council member Alex Tardif said the $1500 grant would be put towards acquiring a new playground shade installation. “At the school council for Truganina South Primary School, we’re always looking for ways to protect our children, and we’ve been keen to install some shading in the playground for some time now, he said. “But with limited budgets, getting the project off the ground simply wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the Westbrook Community Fund program. “So we can’t thank the Dennis Family Corporation enough for getting us started. Alesha Capone

A cure for all ales The Williamstown Heritage Beer and Cider Festival is on this Saturday with a promise to be good for what ales you. The annual Willy Beer Fest, as it has become known over the past six years, will showcase more than 100 craft beers and ciders. Festival director Terri Jackson said this year’s event, on Williamstown’s waterfront, was the biggest yet. “We couldn’t be more excited,” she said. “It’s celebrating the historical significance of Australia’s earliest breweries through their links with the pubs of Williamstown. “Up to 41 pubs operated in the 1880s. Lucky locals and visitors to Williamstown can still enjoy a beer in some of these heritage buildings.” She said the who’s who of craft beer would
be there, including Hop Nation, Two Birds, Moon Dog, Stomping Ground, Thunder Road, Bonehead, Holgate, Blackmans and Bricklane. There’ll also be spritzers, a touch of wine, street food, live music, entertainment and a beer-matched American BBQ tasting experience. Children can enjoy a dedicated kids zone. Proceeds will support the Williamstown Football Club and new charity partner, The Les Twentyman Foundation, Ms Jackson said. The Williamstown Heritage Beer and Cider Festival is at Seaworks Precinct on Saturday, November 16, from noon-8pm. Tickets start from $35 and include a souvenir festival glass. Aged care funding crisis

New centre welcomed The construction of a new Aboriginal community centre and integrated family centre in Wyndham Vale has been completed. Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw said services at the Wunggurrwil Dhurrung Centre, on Communal Road, were scheduled to start from January next year. The $13.2 million centre, of which the state government contributed $3.16 million, includes three kindergarten rooms, a playground, a range of consulting rooms for maternal and child health and other services and two community activity rooms for larger functions. Cr Shaw said Wyndham has one of the fastest growing populations in Australia –
home to more than 270,000 people, with that figure expected to increase by a further 74 per cent over the next 18 years. She said Wyndham was also home to the highest proportion of Aboriginal people in Greater Melbourne, which is why the centre was co-designed with a committee of indigenous community leaders and representatives. Cr Shaw said the Aboriginal Community Centre would provide a dedicated space for indigenous people to strengthen community and cultural development, host community events and provide pathways to education, training and employment. She thanked the Koling wada-ngal Committee for “playing an
invaluable role” in helping to design the centre. Co-chairs of the committee, Rob Monohan and Karen Jackson, attended last week’s opening. Werribee MP Tim Pallas, who also attended the event, said “Wunggurrwil Dhurrung” means “strong heart” in the Wadawurrung language. “I look forward to the centre becoming a strong heart for our community,” he said. The Wunggurrwil Dhurrung Centre will be operated under a tri-party model, consisting of Wyndham council, the Koling wada-ngal Committee and One Tree Family Services. A Werribee aged care facility is calling for urgent reform as staff leave the industry “in their droves” due to funding shortages. Manor Court Werribee Aged Care managing director Ross Smith is pushing for the federal government to fast track its royal commission and address the sector’s “funding crisis”. The federal government decided in September to extend the royal commission into aged care to October next year. Mr Smith said many facilities, including Manor Court, will face closure without immediate action. “For the last five years, our funding increases have been well below inflation, culminating with the 2017-2018 year where our funding was frozen, and we received no increase,” Mr Smith said. “The industry is in a financial crisis right now, with many facilities reducing resident services in order to survive. “Funding for aged care ... does not reflect the cost of providing care to our residents. “Wages are poor, and good staff are leaving the industry in their droves.” He said the royal commission was a rare opportunity to set out a “roadmap for the future” of aged care. “We can’t afford to see our industry decline any further. “We owe it to our older Australians to address the situation now.” Esther Lauaki

Support for carers A wellbeing program for Wyndham carers from multicultural backgrounds has been awarded a $9300 grant. Australia Post announced the recipients of its annual community grants program last week. The Action on Disability within Ethnic Communities (ADEC)’s received a grant for the development of a Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Communities’ Wellbeing Program in Wyndham. The program aims to engage carers from ethnic communities to improve their own wellbeing and reduce social isolation, with opportunities for participation in group sport and fitness activities. ADEC projects manager Mini Dahiya said: “With the Australia Post grant, ADEC will co-design with the community and deliver a wellbeing program for carers from ethnic backgrounds that focuses on improving their physical and emotional wellbeing. “ADEC will build new and stronger relationships with CALD communities living in the Wyndham region, and develop new partnerships and capabilities for similar programs.” The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre in Footscray also received a $10,000 grant from Australia Post. The Yarraville Community Centre received $2000 and the Anakie & District Community Group Inc received $2790.
A round of golf is often considered a relaxing way to spend the afternoon – four rounds in one day is a different matter. Hillside resident Tim Shackle is taking on the 72-hole golf marathon, dubbed The Longest Day, on December 14 and while a little nervous, he said there’s plenty of motivation. “The money raised from the event goes to the Cancer Council, which is a charity I really like,” he said. “My old man passed away in 2016. He was only 58 years-old so I kind of want to get out there and raise awareness around what a fantastic job Cancer Council does.” Mr Shackle was an avid golfer as a teenager, but injury forced him to put the clubs away. “I’ve really only just picked the clubs up again recently,” he said. “I played as a kid and got a nasty back injury as a result of golf, but now I’ve got a new swing that doesn’t hurt, so hopefully I hit it alright and don’t destroy the back.” While wary of his injury, Mr Shackle said he wasn’t sure there was a “right” way to train for such a high endurance event. “I loved golf, obviously it didn’t reciprocate that love and I got a bad injury … It actually got to the point where I was struggling to get out of bed as a 15-16 year-old. “I’ve done some training with some pros and seen a physio, but I’m not really sure what the best way to train for 14 hours of golf is. I’ll just have to wing it and hope we get through it. “At the end of the day it’s all about raising money for a good cause.” To support Mr Shackle visit: www.longestday. org.au/fundraiser/timshackle Tim Shackle will take part in the golf challenge to honour his late father. Fun, foam and the great outdoors By Ewen McRae Myrniong is set to come alive with colour and fun, as the hugely successful Foam Fest returns to St Anne’s Vineyard. The event – one of the largest fun runs in Canada – made its Australian debut last summer after hitting 30 cities worldwide. It’s Australian leg will kick off again on November 30. Up to 5000 participants daily are expected at each location to take on 22 obstacles including the world’s largest inflatable water slide, bouncy castles, mud pits and cargo climb, and more than 2.5 million cubic feet of all natural foam.

the festival experience is going to have a lot more variety - Jesse Fulton

Jesse Fulton, founder and president of 365 Sports, the organisation behind the event, said Australia’s strong appetite for The 5K Foam Fest justified a bigger and better 2019 line-up. “We were delighted with Australia’s response to Foam Fest last year and not only are we landing in a new location for the first time in 2019, the festival experience is going to have a lot more variety and people can expect an awesome new finish line obstacle,” Mr Fulton said. “The market for fun runs and obstacle courses is booming globally and the beauty of our event is it offers something unique for people of all ages and abilities. “With Australia’s appetite for fun, adventure and the outdoors, we are tipping strong appeal for this event for many years to come.”

The event will also raise funds for Make-A-Wish Australia – it donated $40,000 to the charity last year. “While for many, Foam Fest is simply about
a family or group of mates getting together to get filthy clean across the course, underpinning the event is the chance to support a very worthy charity with every ticket sold and we hope to be
able to continue this support for many years to come,” Mr Fulton said. Details: the5kfoamfest.com/Australia

Werribee Shire Council is currently receiving considerable criticism from local welfare agencies over its recent decision not to continue to employ a Children’s Services Development Officer. The position is fully funded by the Federal Government while the shire provides accommodation and administrative services for this officer.
One of the Werribee Football Club’s greatest weapons from the ’89 season – Damien Christensen – has left the Tiger’s den. It was officially announced last Friday that the 26-year-old centre player would be leaving the club to take on a new challenge with a different club.
All the colour and excitement of the Spring racing carnival came to Wyndham last Wednesday for the 1999 Werribee Cup. With crowds up on last year, fashions on the field attracting plenty of entrants and a first-class field for the main event, the local community came out in droves to support Wyndham’s biggest sporting event for the year.

My dad Csaba was a musician, mainly guitar but he could play any instrument – violin, piano, trumpet. He was in bands and duos in Hungary. Along with that comes anxiety, I’ve had anxiety my whole life and have been through some traumatic experiences. I never felt good enough to be a solo artist.

I also want to be able to organise a concert locally, with supporting acts, to raise awareness and funds for headspace. That probably won’t happen until April.
In January 2017, my father passed away from heart disease. That was like a kick up my ass. I thought, ‘I really want to be a singer and songwriter.’ I also want to help people with a mental illness through my music. I want to empower people suffering a mental illness to
I’ve lived in the Werribee area for over 20 years. I now live in Manor Lakes. I love Manor Lakes, it’s generally such a quiet area, it’s got some lovely lakes and trees and they’re building a mini-plaza now at Coles. I love the school here too, Manor Lakes College, my kids go there. Details: Zsuzimusic.com

Cornell Diesel Systems is world class Launched in 1973, Cornell Diesel Systems has expanded into a world-class, ISO-certified diesel fuel injection and engine sub-systems specialist business in Sunshine West. Cornell’s state-of-the-art diesel centre houses a combination of diesel pump rooms and an extensive diesel mechanical workshop. Operations Manager Anthony Grech says Cornells is the only facility in Australia authorised to remanufacture DENSO injectors, and is an authorised service dealer for all major diesel fuel system OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) in Australia. “In addition to diesel fuel injection services, we offer a large diesel workshop that accommodates cars, 4WDs, vans, trucks and buses. We provide vehicle diagnostics and repair on all diesel makes and models,” Anthony says.
of service in the quickest time possible.” Cornells supplies only genuine OEM parts in their repairs and remanufactures to ensure parts meet exact specifications, quality and reliability. “Our aim is to be at the forefront of diesel technology,” Anthony says. “We keep abreast of what’s happening in our industry and are agile, so that enables us to quickly reinvest to keep our existing equipment in optimal condition and our employees equipped with the latest technology. Diesel performance products – such as power modules, turbos, exhausts and intercoolers – are a growing part of the business.
“When it comes to replacing diesel components on a vehicle, cleanliness plays an important role. We take great measures to ensure that we reduce the risk of contaminants and have ducts for eliminating exhaust fumes from the workshop areas.
“In 2019, we became the southern distributor for PWR performance products that – alongside products from Steinbauer, Redback, Garrett, Borg Warner and Holset – has extended our range of high quality performance upgrades. Our long-term goal is to be your one stop shop for all your diesel needs, big and small.”
“Our skilled technicians and mechanics are OEM-trained in diesel diagnostics and repair, and have access to multiple Dynos, modern test equipment, and our extensive inventory of new and remanufactured diesel parts. This helps ensure that we consistently provide a high level

Only a small number of apartments, including a penthouse, dispersed over five levels, remain, so downsizers, first-home buyers and investors should take note of this chance to get in on a slice of life new to town – and just some left have those 30 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY Wednesday, 13 November, 2019

wonderful views from a balcony over the treetops to the river beyond. Imagine life where you can head out the door and be within steps of Watton Street’s cafes, boutiques, shops and restaurants, as well as the fab walking tracks and parklands along the Werribee River. And many of Werribee’s attractions are a short zip in the car – Werribee Open Range Zoo, award-winning Shadowfax Winery and the wonderful Werribee Mansion and rose garden. Wyndham Harbour and the beach
are about 10 minutes away. Two-bedroom apartments are available, each with open-plan layouts that underscore spaciousness, as well as a tiled balcony with glass half-wall. Within steps of Truganina P-9 College and a five-minute drive from Tarneit station, this bright modern abode is a cracker for first-home buyer or investor. It has two large bedrooms, each with walk-in robe and sharing a two-way bathroom and separate toilet. A study, behind double doors off the living domain, could easily serve as a third bedroom. The palette of greys include the floor tiles in the spacious living hub and roller blinds on windows. The kitchen, with an island bench, has woodgrain laminate cabinetry including a french-door pantry and pot drawers, along with stainless-steel underbench oven, gas cooktop and dishwasher. The laundry is a good size and has a closet. Split-systems, gas ducted heating and downlights are on board. A covered outdoor area connects with a compact backyard comprising concrete paths and a patch of turf.
Well established and presented, this solid residence is bright and modern and close to shops, schools and childcare. A bus stop adjacent provides a quick zip to the Wyndham Vale station. The three bedrooms, with floorboards as throughout, include the main which has a designer wallpaper accent wall and a smart dual-basin en suite. There’s a separate lounge room (with another wallpaper accent wall), and a large sitting room that links with the dining zone. The kitchen has a stack of timber cupboards, black benches matching splashback tiles, and gas appliances. French doors open to a gabled pergola, sheltered on three sides, and a timber deck links with a good-sized backyard with a large garage/ workshop accessed through the single garage. Included are ducted heating, evaporative cooling and a split-system. The property is tenanted until April 2020.

Head through electric gates and down a long driveway for arrival at this architectural stunner that perches on about 1.62 hectares of level land with creek frontage. The bold house design is a sophisticated treat, with the finest appointments and bespoke elements. The palette of greys, white and black combines with beautiful Victorian ash floorboards in the roomy living domain, plush grey carpet elsewhere, and streamlined mid-grey roller blinds on large windows. Of the four fitted bedrooms, three up one end cluster around a spacious living room/kids retreat, as well as the sleek main bathroom and a terrific storage-rich laundry. At the opposite end, the vast main bedroom has a stylish fitted dressing room, plus a sumptuous en suite with dual basins, double shower and oval tub. The room links with a fitted study with a picture window framing vistas of the You Yangs. The kitchen is equally luxe, with a giant waterfall stone island bench, seamless upper cabinetry and splashback subway tiles in black. Lower cabinetry is soft-grey, and there’s a walk-in pantry and all the mod-cons. A large undercover alfresco area has steps down to a fenced and landscaped backyard that kids and pets will love. A branch off the main driveway leads to a huge, three-door American barn, and there’s a four-car garage. Among many excellent features are 3.6-metre ceilings, 2.3-metre doorways, double-glazed windows, 18kW zoned ducted heating and cooling and 3kW solar system. 31 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY Wednesday, 13 November, 2019

DELIVERING STRAIGHT TO YOUR DESIRED LETTERBOXES
45 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY Wednesday, 13 November, 2019
SPORT Co-coaches to lead Point Cook into next era Point Cook will take a unique path with its coaching set-up in the Western Region Football League division 1 next season. The Bulldogs have opted to appoint co-coaches, with Brett Jacobs, 41, and Michael Boothey, 42, sharing responsibilities at the helm. Jacobs, a former Sunshine Kangaroos and WRFL interleague coach, is excited to be working with Boothey, a former assistant coach of Deer Park and senior coach at Wyndham Suns. “Every now and then as a footy club, you need to take a risk,” Jacobs said. “Co-coaching might have caught people by surprise and a bit unusual, but we thought why not give it a crack? “We think it can be successful. “We’ve spoken a lot and we’re very much on the same page with how we want to play and
Brett Jacobs will lead Point Cook in a co-coaching capacity. (Wayne Hawkins) 200496_01
how we see us setting up for 2020 and beyond.” Jacobs is “pretty pumped” to be playing a part in Point Cook’s next phase. After winning the second tier premiership in
2018, the Bulldogs stepped up to the top flight this season and were competitive for the most part, but they are keen to take strides up the ladder. “We knew it was going to be a challenging year,” Jacobs said. “To their credit, they boxed on and improved as the year went on.” With a great foundation of young players and a strong junior system, Point Cook is looking to add some more seasoned players in order to become a finals challenger. The Bulldogs are targeting specific players to fit with the short and long term plans of the club. At the top of the list is former Bulldogs who have slipped off the leash, followed by new recruits that fit a certain age bracket. “Our main target in recruiting is trying to get back to the club some Point Cook juniors who have left,” Jacobs said. “We’ve got some good players running
around in other colours at the moment. “We’re sort of targeting guys in their mid 20s because we figure when our 16s and 18s and these kids start coming through, our older players will be 28, 29, 30 and still around and showing the way. “They will help establish the culture of the footy club and make us a better club. “When those guys retire, our young kids will be ready to take over and then it’s a juggernaut coming through.” Jacobs can sense an air of positivity among the players at Point Cook this off season. He believes the players and coaches are all on the same page entering pre-season. “We’ve been transparent with how we’re doing it, so they’ve been kept in the loop and understand fully where we’re at.” Lance Jenkinson

A-League - Round 5 Western United 2 (Durante 13, Appiah-Kubi 58) d Western Sydney Wanderers 1 (Duke 5) Western United forward Kwabena Appiah-Kubi celebrates his match-winning goal. (Luke Hemer) 200394_33
United’s sweet victory By Lance Jenkinson Western United produced a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Western Sydney Wanderers to send a message to the contenders in the A-League at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday night. It was a case of home sweet home for United, who celebrated victory on home soil for the first time with their previous two wins coming on the road. United coach Mark Rudan was impressed with the brand of football displayed by his team on a chilly night in Geelong, but also delighted with the never-say-die attitude of the players, who won after trailing for the second consecutive week. “It was a big win and thoroughly deserved, I must say,” Rudan said. “We’ve done it again, showed true test of character, once again resilience and once again we stayed true to our principles of play. “I thought it was a much more comprehensive performance [compared to last week] and we thoroughly deserved to win tonight against a side that was top of the table before the round started, so really pleased with them.” 46 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY Wednesday, 13 November, 2019
Western United thrived in a back-to-the-wall situation again. Another slow start for United saw them trailing after a Mitchell Duke goal five minutes in. The slow starts for United have been a source of frustration for Rudan, who admits it is a concern. Another speed bump for Western United was a hamstring injury to experienced playmaker Panagiotis Kone. The severity of Kone’s injury is to be revealed, but he will be a big loss to the team. “It’s a hamstring and we’re always very cautious,” Rudan said. In between Duke’s goal for Western Sydney and Kone’s injury, Western United found an equaliser through an unlikely source. United central defender Andrew Durante rose at the far post to score a crisply timed goal with a header from a delightful Alessandro Diamanti corner in the 13th minute. It was a rare goal for Durante – his first in five years in the A-League. “I didn’t even know the last time I scored a goal,” Durante said. “It’s great to not only get on the scoresheet,
but to level the game for the team was fantastic.” With Kone off, Western United had to go to plan B. Rudan re-shuffled his line-up, moving Connor Chapman to defensive midfield and bringing on Aaron Calver to play in defence. Both moves worked a treat as United took a stranglehold over the game. Chapman impressed with his ability to both defend assertively and apply a quick counter. His transition into the midfield after playing the first month of the season as a defender was seamless. Western United’s winning goal came in the 58th minute through Kwabena Appiah-Kubi. United defender Ersan Gulum scuffed his shot, but it turned into an assist when Appiah-Kubi gathered the ball, turned and powered his shot past Wanderers goalkeeper Daniel Lopar. Western United has a headache at the selection table ahead of Saturday night’s clash with Newcastle Jets at GMHBA Stadium. Besart Berisha is likely to return to the line-up after he was rested for the Wanderers game, but will Appiah-Kubi return to the bench after a strong outing?
Point Cook emerged victorious by four wickets over Seabrook in its Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 3 match at Saltwater Reserve on Sunday. The Warriors chased down a target of 119 in 31.5 overs to record a win. Harpreet Singh spearheaded the Warriors run chase with 51. Sachin Wellage was the pick of the Seabrook players with 39 earlier in the day. In division 2, Werribee Centrals had a 46-run win over Williamstown CYMS.
Bowls Werribee has maintained touch with the top four in Bowls Victoria division 1, despite losing a nail-biter 78-76 away to Richmond Union on Saturday. The Colin Thompson rink was outstanding for the Bees, securing a big 25-10 win, while Rob Patten got the job done with a 21-19 victory. Losses for Ian Milledge (20-17) and Peter Yasar (28-13) affected the overall score.
Basketball Werribee Devils have signed their first import in the John Dorge-coached era. The Devils have put pen to paper with forward Aaron Harrison for the Big V Basketball men’s state championship in 2020. Harrison has played professionally in Argentina, Germany and Luxembourg, as well as Australia.

Teen takes on the best By Lance Jenkinson It has been such a hectic and rewarding season for Deer Park taekwondo sensation Reba Stewart that she has not had a moment to truly reflect on her great achievements in 2019. With sport and study for year 12 exams, there has been little downtime for the hard-working Stewart. When reading a list of some of her achievements on the taekwondo mat, including gold medals at the Australian Open, Oceania Championships and Pacific Games, Stewart finally realises how far she has come in the sport. “It is a bit surreal, Stewart said. “It’s been such a hectic year, I haven’t had a lot of time to stop and reflect. “I haven’t been in this sport for a very long time, but the amount that I’ve done in the short amount of time, I feel like I’m really doing well at the moment. Stewart’s moment of arrival on the world stage came at this year’s world championships in Manchester. The 18-year-old was staring down the world’s best taekwondo players and more than held her own. A top 16 finish was an incredible result for a teenager facing competitors upwards of 10 years older with more experience. “I think that was definitely my highlight of the year, Stewart said. “It was in Manchester and it was a really big comp with so many different countries. “The atmosphere there was a lot different from all of the other competitions. “It was the world championships – it’s one of the highest comps you can be at. Stewart took so much learning out of the worlds.
“The way they fight, you just know how much training, effort and time they put into becoming the best athletes in the world, Stewart said. “I came up against a ranked No. 2 in the world. Stewart was primed to perform her best at the competition. A training camp in Jordan leading up had her in a strong mental and physical state. “I came up against a 26-year-old woman, she said. “I’m in the heavyweight category, plus-73 kilos, so there’s some big girls. “I really liked how I performed. “It was the best preparation I’ve done for a competition beforehand. Now that she has mixed it with the best taekwondo players in the world, the sky is the limit for Stewart. Her dream of one day representing Australia at an Olympics is a step closer. “Fighting them, you’re on the stage with them, so you feel like you belong there, Stewart said. “You’re on the same mat as them, so I know that I can become the best that I can be as well. “I can become top 10 in the world, top five in the world, or I could be No. 1 one day. Stewart trains under coach Jerry Moraitis at Hall’s Taekwondo in Tullamarine. She has just completed her year 12 studies at Maribyrnong College. Stewart is the November nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and or national levels. Stewart will receive $1000 and other prizes, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club to assist her in achieving her sports goals.
