Young Werribee resident Akon Dhel has been named a state finalist in the 2020 Miss World Australia competition. Miss Dhel and 30 other contestants took part in a preliminary final in Melbourne at the weekend. She was one of 17 to make it to state finals. Miss Dhel, 20, said she entered the event to step outside her comfort zone. “I was nervous, I’m not used to entering beauty pageants and talking about myself to a crowd, I’m not a model either, so I wanted to challenge myself,” she said. “What I enjoyed most was meeting the other girls, it was really fun and I met lots of characters from all walks of life.” Miss Dhel described herself as a “proud South Sudanese Australian”. She arrived in Australia at the age of six, after being born in a refugee camp. Miss Dhel is studying a three-year nursing degree and in the future hopes be gain employment as a nurse in the Australian Defence Force.

Thefts cause group pain By Alesha Capone The theft of about $30,000 of equipment could force the Williams Landing Estate Residents’ Association to shut down. Generators, a marquee and lighting used by WLERA to host last month’s Trail of Lights community event has been stolen from a locked storage container on Garran Street, Truganina. Thieves cut padlocks to the container some time between 5pm on September 29 and 1pm on October 1. WLERA president Ian MacGowan said the stolen generators, valued at $27,000, had been

rented from Kennards Hire in Werribee. Although WLERA had taken out insurance for the Trail of Lights event, the association is not sure if the insurance would cover the stolen items. Mr MacGowan said it is also unclear if Kennards’ insurance would cover the stolen generators. “If the cost of these goods are not covered by either our insurance or by Kennards, WLERA will be forced to be wound up,” Mr MacGowan said. “WLERA is a small community group and doesn’t have the funds to cover the full

replacement costs of the equipment. “If we can’t cover the costs we may need to officially wind up the organisation and liquidate what little assets we have to cover the liability, although that still will not cover the cost of the generators. “It depends on whether Kennards pursues the group for the costs or choose to cover the loss under their insurance.” Mr MacGowan said that if the WLERA was forced to wind up, it would put its other community activities “in jeopardy” including the Williams Landing Community Garden. have spoken to a representative of WLERA and they are aware that the police are doing everything they can to recover the generators.” Police have recovered two of the generators from a Werribee house. During the school holidays, thieves also broke into a storage container at Truganina South Primary School, stealing bicycles and sports equipment. Principal Linda Danese said the bikes were used in the school’s bicycle education program, for pupils who did not own a bike. Former councillor pleads guilty By Chris Vedelago, The Age A former Wyndham councillor and decorated police officer has pleaded guilty to serious sexual offences against two female victims. Mark Steven Rose began to weep loudly after he admitted three charges in the County Court last Tuesday. The court heard the former police sergeant sexually penetrated two victims in incidents in July and August 2018. The identity of the victims and details of the crimes cannot be disclosed for legal reasons.

Mr Rose buried his face in tissues and continued to weep after Judge Paul Higham allowed him to step down from the dock. Mr Rose resigned from Victoria Police early this month – less than a fortnight before entering his guilty plea – after 26 years in the force. He is a recipient of the National Medal for Police Service, was an executive member of the Police Association and served in the Australian Air Force. In 2010, Mr Rose resigned after seven years on Wyndham council, and cited escalating

work and family responsibilities as the reason for his decision. Mr Rose ran for the seat of Altona in the 2010 byelection called in the wake of the resignation of Lynne Kosky but lost to Labor’s Jill Hennessy. He was joined on the campaign trail that year by then-opposition leader Ted Baillieu. Mr Rose also staged a failed bid for State Parliament in 2006 in another seat. Mr Rose has been allowed to remain on bail ahead of a plea hearing in April next year. He is living in Queensland.

Horse racing heavyweights are in town and dozens of race fans were trackside in Werribee last week hoping to catch a glimpse of them. Werribee Racing Club held its Breaky at the Track event on Thursday as part of a host of functions it’s putting on in the lead-up to the spring racing season. Expenditure on electronic gaming machines in Wyndham has increased by more than 80 per cent across 15 years, according to a new council report. Wyndham council has released a draft of its new Electronic Gaming Policy, which states that gaming losses in the municipality grew from $57.19 million in 2002-03 to $105.45 million in 2017-18. Within the 2018-19 financial year, Wyndham’s pokies cost residents $106.1 million – equivalent to $290,567 each day. Wyndham is home to 903 gaming machines, located in seven hotels and six clubs. The council’s draft Electronic Gaming Policy states that the council has two key aims in developing the document – to “strongly discourage” the establishment of new gaming venues in growth areas covered by Precinct Structure Plans (PSPs), until the new communities are “substantially established”; and to encourage the “consolidation” of additional electronic gaming machines in existing venues, as long as the venues are not close to areas identified as being at a social and economic disadvantage or susceptible to harm from gambling. The venues must also offer a choice of other recreational attractions. A report into the draft Electronic Gaming Policy said that there were currently 21 PSPs which have been prepared, or are being completed, for Wyndham’s growth areas.

Pensioner wins cannabis appeal By Alesha Capone An elderly man who admitted to growing cannabis because he couldn’t live on the pension has successfully appealed a prison sentence. The 71-year-old was in February sentenced to three years in prison with a non-parole period of 18 months. However at the Court of Appeal earlier this month presiding judges David John Ashley and Mark Weinberg resentenced the man to

225 days jail, the number of days he had served to that point. The man appealed his sentence on the grounds that there was a delay between his original arrest and sentencing; his “early plea of guilty and remorse”; his “prior good character and lack of any previous convictions”; and his “good prospects for rehabilitation”. The court heard that in December 2015, the man leased a factory in Archer Road, Truganina. In April 2017, while the man was “subsisting”

on a fortnightly old-age pension of $400 per week, police attended the factory after a neighbor reported suspicious behavior. Police discovered a hydroponic cannabis crop and a number of young cannabis plants. They seized 39 cannabis plants in total. Shortly after police searched the factory, the man arrived at the site. He admitted to leasing the factory and told police there was cannabis inside. The court heard the man “co-operated fully with the investigation” and gave police

“a detailed account” of how he harvested the cannabis. “He said that he had grown it in order to make money, because he was unable to live on his pension,” Judge Weinberg said. “He admitted to having harvested and sold the cannabis from one room in the factory, and said that the proceeds of the sale had amounted to $10,000.” The court also heard the man had no criminal history of any kind and had been unable to continue working after having a stroke more than a decade ago.

Anniversary of love Music brought Maria and Fernando Chilco together and 60 years later the two are inseparable. The Hoppers Crossing couple hit some major milestones in the past week, celebrating Maria’s 84th birthday on Tuesday, followed by the pair’s diamond wedding anniversary on Thursday. The couple were from migrant families who settled in Perth – Fernando a Croatian refugee from Italy and Maria from Holland. They met in their 20s through a friend. “I befriended another Dutch girl while I was working in Perth and used to stay at her place on the weekends,” Maria said. “One day she said to me, I want you to meet some Italian friends … Fernando was one of two boarders staying at her friend’s house. “We spent one Saturday afternoon with them and Fernando walked me home. “He learned that I loved music … he loved it too and we would go to concerts together.”

Maria said she was nervous to introduce Fernando to her mother. “I knew my mother wanted me to marry someone Dutch,” she said. “When my mother met Fernando, she thought he was the end of the earth … just wonderful. “He still is today.” They married on October 17, 1959 before family and friends in Perth. A warehouse with enough space to store more than seven million Mars Bars will be built in Wyndham. Mars Wrigley Australia, which manufactures Mars Bars, M&Ms, Snickers, Skittles and Extra, last week announced a seven-year partnership with Toll Group and Charter Hall to construct and manage a state-of-the-art warehouse in Truganina. The warehouse is set to store all of Mars Wrigley’s products under one roof, and will have the capacity to house up to 49,000 pallets at any given time – which amounts to enough space to store 733,824,000 Mars Bars. The temperature-controlled warehouse, which is expected to begin operating late next year, will be equipped with Automated Guide Vehicles to assist workers move pallets around. Mars Wrigley Australia supply chain director Marius Vermeulen said: “It’s an exciting project for our business and one that’s been several years in the making”. “We’re looking forward to realising the benefits this new facility will deliver to our customers, our business and consumers,” he said. Charter Hall’s head of industrial development, Andrew Simons, said the company was “delighted to continue to build on our long-standing national relationship with Toll and welcome them to our Midwest Logistics Hub in Truganina”. Mr Simons said the Mars Wrigley warehouse would measure 44,000 square metres in size. A man was hit with an iron bar during an aggravated burglary at a Point Cook house last week. Police said that two intruders kicked in the front door of a Luxford Drive home about 2am on Tuesday. A family of three who were asleep at the time, woke when they heard a noise. Police said the two intruders were disguised with their faces covered and one of the offenders was carrying an item described as an “iron bar”. A male resident of the house confronted the offenders, who made demands for property. Police said there was an altercation, which resulted in the male resident being hit with the iron bar. Police said the man sustained injuries to his torso and arms, but did not require hospitalisation. The offenders fled the scene. It is believed one of the offenders may have been in the street last Tuesday, between 11.30pm and midnight, as well as between October 9 to 11. Police have appealed for residents of the area who have CCTV to check their footage for any unusual activity. Anyone with information, or who witnessed suspicious behaviour in the area, can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

WynTasker takes off By Esther Lauaki A new program connecting Manor Lakes students with the community is bearing fruit. Manor Lakes College VCAL students have been mucking in for the past few weeks on a garden upgrade at The Smith Family children’s charity headquarters in Werribee as part of the WynTasker program. WynTasker – a play on the outsourcing app AirTasker – offers assistance to community groups and businesses that need tasks completed.

It was the brainchild of The Smith Family partnerships for education manager Kristy Gray. “The Smith Family has a strong presence in the Wyndham community, and recently we have been working with Manor Lakes College to connect their VCAL students with local community groups and businesses,” Ms Gray said. “We wanted to create a program that helped students who were at risk of disengaging and leaving school early make the most of learning opportunities outside of the normal school environment.” She told Star Weekly that she hoped through WynTasker, students could apply the skills and knowledge they learned in a broader environment. “With engagement being a core component of WynTasker, participating students are invited to have direct input into the projects they are involved in – with the

inaugural project being an upgrade of the garden in The Smith Family Werribee office,” Ms Gray said. “Students planned and pitched ideas before work began.” Ms Gray said the success of WynTasker has been “impressive” “Not only just the visual results of the

students’ hard work but, more importantly, there have been increases in attendance and work output by those participating,” she said. “The new endeavour has already led to one student already being offered an apprenticeship.”

New strategy for volunteers A new strategy is making it easier for Wyndham residents to volunteer in the community. Wyndham council adopted its Volunteering Strategy for the next five years at this month’s meeting. The strategy was put together to increase rates of volunteering by strengthening community understanding, highlighting the value of volunteering, and promoting best practice in volunteer management. Mayor Mia Shaw said the strategy aimed to make it easier for people to find volunteering opportunities. “The actions in this strategy will help residents discover new ways to find volunteering opportunities that they can fit into their busy lives, so that everyone can get involved in making a difference locally,” Cr Shaw said. “The strategy also considers how we can come together to maintain and grow our volunteer base by involving clubs, groups and organisations to better recruit and manage volunteers. “Wyndham has people from many different cultures who help each other out but don’t consider what they do volunteering in the technical sense. “We want to show the community that volunteering does not necessarily mean dedicating a specific amount of time a week to an organisation, but could be kind gestures such as mowing your neighbour’s grass or helping a community group build its website.” Esther Lauaki

First wife of Werribee Werribee actor Kelley Kerr Young will star in a cabaret about the perils of dating, relationships, marriage and other life quandaries next month at the Chapel Off Chapel theatre. Presented by the independent theatre company Red Brassiere, the â€œsecond seasonâ€? of First Wives Pub will feature songs by artists such as Amy Winehouse, The Divinyls and Cyndi Lauper. The school staged its Westbourne Celebrates spectacular last Thursday and the entire student population of almost 1700 played a part. Westbourne Celebrates aims to showcase the school’s academic, cultural and sporting achievements in a way that is family-friendly and inclusive. Development director Anne Bright said she hoped that students gained some insights into what it means to be part of a wider community and the many contributions made by supporting groups and individuals. “Our very large gathering included … students and their families from year 3 to the

Class of 2019, as well as staff and friends of the school,” Ms Bright said. “The music department excelled with massed singing, orchestral performances, selections from the year’s musical productions Wicked and Seussical Jr.” This year’s theme, Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow, was brought to life with three short films that celebrated Westbourne’s recent history, the school of today and its future. “Seeing images of those first speech nights, the original buildings under construction at Truganina, current school activities and then students engaged in robotics and artificial intelligence projects; provided some fascinating insights into Westbourne’s journey.” Esther Lauaki

Festival of fun returns The volunteer-run Werribee Craft Festival will celebrate its 41st anniversary next month. And it’s hoping any profits raised will boost the coffers of the Palliative Care Unit at Werribee Mercy Hospital to update a garden used by patients and families. Since the festival was first held in 1978 it has donated funds to cancer support groups, Werribee Coast Guard, Manor Lakes Ambulance Victoria branch, Heathdale Community Centre, cat rescue group Purrs of Point Cook, the Country Women’s Association, Werribee RSL, dance groups and retirement villages. Funds raised have also helped to buy sewing machines for a sewing program for refugees, run by the Wyndham Community and

Education Centre. This year’s festival will feature more than 90 stalls selling handmade craft including candles, Christmas crafts, educational toys, wooden goods and cards. Traditionally held on the weekend after Melbourne Cup Day, for the first time, this year’s festival will open on the Friday night, November 8, from 6-9pm. It will also be open on Saturday, November 9 and Sunday, November 10 from 9am to 4pm at the Encore Events Centre in Hoppers Crossing. Admission is free. MY WYNDHAM Lindsay Ison’s family has lived in Wyndham for six generations. He is descended from William Ison, who arrived in Australia during 1855 and became one of Werribee’s first European settlers. He chats with Alesha Capone.

Has the area changed a lot over the years? Yes, the area has changed a lot. It’s a lot bigger and there are a lot more houses. All through here (near where W. Ison Reserve is located today), when I was a kid we used to play football out in the paddocks. As long as you were home before dark, you were alright. I remember, as a kid – where Ford is, near the Racecourse Hotel – herding a mob of 200 to 300 sheep down over the ford to the shearing shed. I can’t imagine doing that these days. That was one of my favourite haunts as a kid, the shearing shed – I got along pretty well with the people who worked there. That’s also how I learned to drive – the shearers would leave their car in a paddock and I’d have to go back and get it, to drive back. What do you like most about the area? I always say that I’d move out of the place, but I haven’t found anywhere better. I’ve got too many memories here, if I moved I would have to start over again. I reckon the area’s pretty good really. I hear you’re also a big fan of the recent upgrades which Wyndham council has made

to W. Ison Reserve? That’s one thing, now they’ve done it up like this, it’s quite enjoyable. My grandkids love it. How did you meet your wife? My wife Jeanine and I have been married for 44 years. I worked with her father at the milk factory, which was right opposite where the shire offices are. Jeanine used to live over the back here. Her father didn’t drive and he would ride his bike to work at 4am in the morning. I’d sometimes drive him home. I also used to coach her brother in football. You were quite involved in local sport? As a junior, I played with Glen Devon under-16s and played with Werribee and the Werribee Centrals. I was team manager for Werribee Football Club for nearly 10 years, when they won their premiership. What do you enjoy about that? It was just everybody you met and the friends you made, they were great. I even coached cricket. Then I gave it all up to follow my daughter, Felicity, who played softball. I ended up president of the club where she played, the City Raiders who play at President’s Park. Now I’m back there again as president. It happened when I ended up going to one of their meetings and got dobbed in.

Recent events in Federal and State Parliament indicate that Werribee is likely to be the venue for Victoriaâ€™s main rifle range when it is moved from Williamstown. The strong hint comes in a letter from the Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, to the Federal Member for Gellibrand, Mr. Ralph Willis.

The Werribee District Hospital Board will not be considering the two alternate sites for the proposed Hoppers Crossing hospital which were outlined in the Werribee Technology Precinct Concept Plan. The possible sites, one at the corner of the Maltby Bypass and the Princes Hwy and the other off Hoppers Lane, were presented in a council report as possible alternate sites for the proposed hospital.

Any further work on old Werribee District Hospital land has been banned after large amounts of asbestos were found around the Synnot Street site last week. Health and safety officers from the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) rushed to the site after a tip-off from a local resident last Wednesday.

Wyndham Council has refused to follow the lead of Melton, Casey, Cardinia and Mitchell councils, which have declared their opposition to the controversial Growth Areas Infrastructure Contribution (GAIC) in its current form. Affected landholders have been campaigning against the proposed tax, which would force them to pay the Government $95,000 a hectare if they sell their property.

More than just Child’s Play Owned and operated for the past five years by Sam and Ian Johnson, Child’s Play Tarneit (formerly Kool Kidz) is one of the few long daycare centres in the Tarneit area that received an “Exceeding” rating from the Department of Education in 2016. And the centre has just been given another ‘Exceeding’ rating again this month, an achievement to be proud of.

hild’s Play has seven rooms to cater for up to 132 children each day, aged from six weeks to six years. They are cared for by qualified educators, most of whom have been with Sam and Ian from the beginning. “That means,” says Sam, “that our educators have developed and grown with us, and that the children are surrounded by long-familiar faces and benefit from consistent respectfulness and compassionate care. It feels like family for every child and adult involved.” Sam says as much as she and Ian value the close-knit community they have at Child’s Play, they also have a focus on connecting the children with their wider community. Their upcoming Family Fun Day is one part of that focus. It takes place between 10am-2pm on Saturday, November 16. “We’re putting on a day for children and families as a way of giving back to our community,” Sam explains. “We’ll have a bouncy castle and face-painters, as well as some of our incursion ‘regulars’ such as Hey Dee Ho, Mini-Maestros and Little Sports Heroes. “Our chef will be on hand to cook up some delicious dishes to sample, and everyone’s welcome to join in, have a look around and see how we do things.”

Ian says they’re also excited about being part of the annual Children’s Week Picnic at Werribee Park, taking place on Sunday, October 27. “We’ll have a stall at the event,” says Ian. “We think it’s important to support our local council in its stated intention of this event, i.e. to encourage learning through fun activities, promote an active, healthy lifestyle, and enable discovery of talents through new experiences. SPORT United youngster shows his pace in home opener There is a ruthless attitude about Western United in its inaugural A-League season. United has picked up four out of a possible six points, claiming a victory overseas against Wellington Phoenix and drawing with premiers plate holders Perth Glory. That start would be enough to satisfy most newly established clubs, but the boys in green and black were left yearning for more after Saturday evening’s 1-1 draw with the Glory at GMHBA Stadium. Young United substitute Dylan Pierias, who came on late in the second half to add some spark up front, is not one to settle for honourable results. A homegrown western suburbs product, Pierias conveyed his team’s disappointment at failing to send the home fans away with a win over the Glory. “At the end of the day, we’ll take the point, but we’re definitely a team that always wants to win and doesn’t accept losing,” he said. “We’ll look back and review it and see what we can improve on.”

Pierias was involved in one of the key moments of the game. The 19-year-old almost stole the headlines when winger Josh Risdon played a delightful ball in behind the Glory defence. Pierias used his blistering speed to split two Glory defenders, took two delicate touches on the ball and then chipped Glory goalkeeper Liam Reddy. The ball looked for all money destined for the back of the net, but it did not dip enough and kissed the crossbar. “Sometimes it doesn’t go your way,” Pierias lamented. “It was just instinct to chip it and a few of the boys asked me, could I slot it past him? “I’m the type of guy that I get on the field and try to just do my thing and I decided to chip it and unfortunately it didn’t go in, but what can you do? “He’s obviously a good goalkeeper, I just did my best and it didn’t go in.” In the 10 minutes that Pierias was on the field, the former Spring Hills and Keilor Park

junior showed that he has the goods to mix it at A-League level. Pierias might even be an ace up the sleeve of United coach Mark Rudan to use in an attacking sense, though he is happy to play whatever role is best for the team. “I’m traditionally a right wing back, but I’ve

got a bit of pace and I’ve got a few attributes to play up front,” he said. “I used to actually play up front when I was younger. “The boss trusted me to go up there and he said just make some runs and use my pace, so that’s what I did. “I listened to instruction and tried to have as much fun as I could and try and make an impact for the boys.” Pierias conceded it was a result that could have gone either way, but felt Western United finished the stronger of the two teams. “Both teams had their moments,” he said. “It was a tough tight game, but I think in the second half we took it to them. “We should’ve deserved the points there. “Our first half was a bit shaky, but we re-grouped and took it to them in the second half.” Pierias will be eager for more game time when Western United takes on his former club Melbourne City at GMHBA Stadium this Sunday at 6pm. United’s missed opportunities By Lance Jenkinson It was a tale of two halves for Western United in a pulsating 1-1 draw with Perth Glory in its home A-League opener at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday. In stark contrast to a week earlier, United came out lifeless, lacking imagination and lucky to be on level terms at half-time, but Mark Rudan’s team re-grouped after the break and showed the serious attacking threat it possesses in an impressive second 45 minutes. Panagiotis Kone, the first of United’s marquee signings, brought the game to life with an unforgettable first United goal on Australian soil in the 49th minute. The crowd rose to its feet in unison when Kone’s long range curling strike evaded the out-stretched arms of Perth Glory goalkeeper Liam Reddy and slammed into the back of the net. It is a goal that will be replayed over and over again and one for the 6888 spectators in attendance to say ‘I was there for that’. United right winger Josh Risdon was pleased with the response of his team after a lacklustre first half. “The first half obviously wasn’t the best,” he said. “It was pretty sloppy on our behalf and we couldn’t really keep the ball too well and we sort of got trapped in our own half. “I thought in the second half we responded very well. “We put them on the back foot and created a lot of chances. “A brilliant goal by ‘Pana’ there and we could’ve pinched a goal at the end there.” Western United had a swathe of opportunities to add to its goal tally in the second half. The always busy Alessandro Diamanti had a long range effort parried away by Reddy. Striker Besart Berisha thought he scored for United, only to be ruled offside, much to the displeasure of the home fans. Young substitute Dylan Pierias came the closest, chipping the keeper only for the ball to drop on to the crossbar. Instead of doubling its lead, United coughed up its advantage. a credit to the work of Rudan, his coaching staff and the players willingness to buy in. “We’re building as a team,” Risdon said. The firsts keep coming for Western United in its inaugural season. United will play its first local derby against Melbourne City at GMHBA Stadium on Sunday at 6pm. Risdon believes three Melbourne derbies – contested between United, City and Melbourne Victory – have added more excitement around the A-League in this city.

Prismall takes up a coaching role with the Centurions Rhyce Prismall has been wooed to Werribee Centrals to take on a new playing co-coach role of the Geelong and District Football League club. Prismall made the tough decision to leave his beloved Werribee Districts in the Western Region Football League because the fit at Centrals was perfect for this stage of his career. At the age of 30, Prismall is beginning to explore his coaching capabilities, something he started as a playing assistant coach under Chris Gilham at Werribee Districts last year. The decision to move to Centrals was also brought about to bring his young family closer together on Saturdays, which is priority number one for Prismall. “It was a family decision,” Prismall said. “My wife [Melissa] has played netball at Centrals for the past 15 years. “A combination of that, with our second child due in February, it’s an easier decision on the family. “The coaching side of things, going on as a

co-coach, that’s an opportunity for me.” Prismall leaves Werribee Districts with a little bit of unfinished business. He spent the past four seasons with the Tigers, one under Paul Chapman and the other three under Gilham, but could not crack it for a premiership.

With so many close friends at the Tigers, Prismall admitted it was a tough decision to leave. “I played juniors there and I’ve been back for the last four seasons,” Prismall said. “We were pretty close this year, too, probably a little piece in the puzzle away from winning a flag. “It was hard to tell the players, especially, and the coach and committee.” Prismall has played under some of the best coaches in local football and he will take a little bit from all of them and apply it to his new role. He joked that he and Gilham were like “footy nerds” last year, discussing match-ups, team changes and training strategies. “I’ve been pretty blessed in my local football career,” Prismall said. “I’ve had Chris Gilham at Werribee, Mick McGuane at Keilor and Matt Kershaw at Lara and I think they’re three of the best coaches going around in Victoria. “I’ve been able to sponge off them as much as I could over the past decade or so and hopefully

I can sponge a lot off Nick Smith as well.” Prismall is still playing good football, so he will add just as much on the park to a premiership-contending Werribee Centrals. The Werribee resident featured in the WRFL’s interleague squad last year and will add some class on the outside for the Centurions. He will be just as hands-on in his coaching role. “Nick has given me the green light to take on as much as I like,” Prismall said. “I’ll be looking to hopefully give as much as I can in both the playing and the coaching.” Smith is thrilled with the two-in-one benefit Werribee Centrals will receive in the Prismall capture. “We’ve been targeting good experienced players who have played at higher levels and he fits that,” he said. “The opportunity to develop his coaching in a co-coaching capacity was a fair carrot for him as well.” Lance Jenkinson

Werribee Basketball Association has secured hosting rights to the 2021 Australian U18 basketball championships and the Kevin Coombs Cup for the best wheelchair basketball players. Players from all over the country will converge on Eagle Stadium in Werribee to play for national titles. It’s been described as a boon for Wyndham on and off the court. “For Werribee Basketball to be hosting the national championships here in Wyndham is massive and the whole event is going to energise our entire community,” WBA general manager Robbie Coyle said. “It will provide a fantastic stimulus for the local business community too with recent economic reports from previous hosts Townsville and Ballarat outlining a direct economic impact of between $2 million and $4 million.”

Werribee at crossroads By Lance Jenkinson The first day of the Wyndham derby was a frustrating one for Werribee and Hoppers Crossing in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association at Hogans Road Reserve on Saturday. Intermittent rain made for a stop-start day with 16 overs wiped out from the 80 allotted overs. It has left the game at a crossroads with Werribee heading to stumps on day one on 6-142 off 64 overs. With his side to complete the final 16 overs of its innings this Saturday, Werribee captain-coach Tim O’Brien said the first hour of play would be crucial for both sides. “It’s definitely in the balance,” he said. “The first hour next week will be pretty important. When we get a go with the ball, we’ll need to bowl well early.” Matt Dean was the standout with the bat on day one for Werribee. Playing in his 100th first XI game, Dean

posted a patient 52 off 120 balls, including eight fours. In tough conditions, Dean showed all the other batsmen how runs could be made on the day. “He batted particularly well,” O’Brien said. “It wasn’t a free flowing wicket to bat on and you had to work hard for your runs.” Shaun Dean (22) and Matthew Gudde (38 not out) picked up the slack after Matt Dean was trapped lbw by Hoppers Crossing leg spinner Sanka Abeyruwan. Abeyruwan, who took 3-32 off 13 overs, was outstanding with the ball for Hoppers Crossing, snaring the wickets of the Dean brothers and O’Brien. “There was a little bit of spin in the wicket and it was a bit two paced as well, so some balls did skid on and some balls turned,” O’Brien said. “He was impressive, he bowled pretty well. “We were lucky he came on so late – around the 30-over mark – because he would’ve probably done some damage if he came on a bit earlier against us.” Werribee is aiming for a score around 200.

A lot of that hope rests on the shoulders of Gudde, who has played a disciplined knock so far and will need to guide the tail. O’Brien is confident that it will not all be on Gudde though, pointing out that Jonathan Burton and Mick Kelly have done jobs with the bat in the past. Matt Dean was not the only player to be celebrating a milestone in the Werribee firsts on Saturday. Opening bowler Burton is featuring in his 150th club game. Dean and Burton mean more to the Tigers than just numbers on a scorecard. “Jono’s a leader for the bowlers,” O’Brien said. “He’s always speaking to our quicks and coming up with good ideas. “Matty would be one of the best fielders in the comp, so he’s important in that area for us. “They’ve both played a lot of cricket, so if they see something in the field and something with the batters, they’ll talk to me and come up with plans we can go on with. “They show leadership in different ways.”

Hyundai’s three shades of green By Alistair Kennedy, Marque Motoring Hyundai has taken itself to the forefront of automotive battery technology with its Ioniq hatchback being the only vehicle to be offered in Australia with three different variations of electric power – petrol/electric hybrid, petrol/ plug-in electric hybrid and fully electric. The entry level Ioniq Hybrid uses a conventional Pruis-type mixture of petrol/ electric with its principal power source coming from a 1.6-litre four-cylinder direct-injection petrol engine of 77 kW combined with a 32 kW electric motor for a total output of 109 kW. The batteries are recharged through regenerative braking. Combined fuel usage is listed at 3.4 litres per 100 kilometres. Ioniq Plug-In has the same engine as the Hybrid with combined output of 104 kW and 265 Nm. Like the Hybrid, it uses regenerative braking to charge the batteries but can also be plugged into any external power point to provide about 63km of electric-only travel. While the primary power source of the Hybrid is the engine, the Plug-In runs on the battery with the engine only kicking in when additional power or torque is required or when the battery has been flattened. Charging takes just over two hours. Fuel consumption is listed at a frugal 1.1 litres per 100km. Ioniq Electric relies entirely on battery power to produce its peak outputs of 88 kW and 295 Nm. With an approximate range of 250km it falls well below the 400+km range of the Hyundai Kona Electric SUV but an imminent upgrade will increase by about 20 per cent. Like the Kona, the level of the Ioniq Electric’s regenerative braking can be adjusted through steering-wheel mounted paddles.

squeeze. Rear legroom is reasonable although the Ioniq’s coupe-like roofline will make life uncomfortable for anyone approaching 1.8 metres in height.

Styling

Ioniq has a sleek fastback profile designed not just for its looks but also, with a drag co-efficient of 0.24, to enhance aerodynamic performance. The major difference in appearance between the three variants is at the front where the Electric, which needs minimal airflow, doesn’t have a grille.

Safety

All Hyundai Ioniq models have achieved the maximum five-start ANCAP safety rating with seven airbags, front and rear-parking sensors and – given the restricted rear visibility – a rear view camera with dynamic guidelines.

Also standard is the Hyundai SmartSense safety package that includes smart cruise control; autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection; lane keep assist; blind spot monitoring; forward collision warning and rear cross-traffic alert.

Interior

Adding to Ioniq’s green credentials much of the Ioniq’s interior has been crafted using a variety of eco-friendly materials including recycled plastic, powdered wood, volcanic stone and sugar cane by-products. The second row is comfortable with enough room for two adults without too much of a

First impressions are good. Unfortunately the parking brake is of the old awkward foot-operated variety – why? Once underway the Ioniq Hybrid is comfortable and easy to drive with the regenerative braking the only indication that you aren’t driving a conventional petrol car. Two drive modes are available, Eco and Sport. Given that green was our colour of the week we spent most of the time in Eco mode earning ourselves an 80 per cent efficient driving rating. Switching to Sport mode sharpened up the performance noticeably, with paddle shifts adding to the driving enjoyment.
