Get ready for Boo at the Zoo A festival of all things hairy and scary is coming to Werribee Open Range Zoo. New jail beds slashed By Alesha Capone The state government has slashed the number of beds to be built at the new Cherry Creek youth prison. The Cherry Creek facility, which is being built about 1.5 kilometres north east of Little River Road where it joins the Princes Freeway, is due to be completed in 2021. The state government last week announced the justice centre would have just 140 beds when it first opens. Previous state government plans said it would have up to 300 beds for remanded and sentenced children and young people, a

12-bed mental health unit and an intensive supervision unit of at least eight beds. Western metropolitan region MP Bernie Finn said the state government “is all over the shop on youth justice”. He said the government’s “backflip” on a previous commitment to close the Parkville Youth Justice Centre showed they were “flip-flopping all over the place”. “This is a dog’s breakfast,” he said. “If you want to know what is going to happen with youth justice in this state, stay tuned because it could change tomorrow.” Last week’s state government announcement

also revealed the Cherry Creek facility would house males aged 15 to 18 years old and would be an “interim youth justice system configuration”. “The design of the Cherry Creek facility has been revised to deliver a more specialised facility that focuses on staff safety and reducing re-offending among Victoria’s most complex and challenging young males aged 15-18 years,” the government said. “The facility will also include an intensive intervention unit, a specialised health care unit, intensive alcohol and drug treatment and dedicated mental health beds. “Security and safety for staff and

rehabilitation of young people is at the forefront of the revised design. There will be more secure accommodation units, advanced technology to monitor movement, additional CCTV, improved security counter designs at reception, gatehouse and admissions areas and new staff exit points.” The centre will also be “master planned” to have up to 244 beds in the future. The Minister for Corrections and Youth Justice Ben Carroll said: “This facility will manage the most complex and challenging young people in custody to prevent reoffending and keep the community safe.”

Anger over station parking fines By Alesha Capone A driver has slammed the “unbelievably unfair” fines given to her and others for parking in non-designated spaces at Tarneit train station. Bianca Keogh said that she was not a regular commuter, but decided to take the train to the city one day last month. She said she drove to the station about 9am and ended up doing four laps of the carpark “… only to find there was not one spot on either side of the station”. in the middle of the road, on zebra crossings and on the side of road, in the paddock next door”. She parked on the side of the entrance road, “just like the other 100 cars who had parked ‘illegally’.” “But on my return I found a $99 fine on my car,” she said.

Ms Keogh said that it was unfair of the council to fine travellers who had no other option but to park in non-designated spaces. “I figured my council knew how desperate commuters were to use our train systems and wouldn’t go about fining all of us,” she said. Wyndham council’s director of city operations, Stephen Thorpe, said: “While we understand Ms Keogh’s frustrations with parking near Tarneit railway station, it does not justify illegal parking”. “Illegal parking cannot be overlooked by council because our priority is the safety of

road users. “Wyndham City acknowledges that parking at local railway stations is currently at capacity, limiting the number of people who can use public transport to travel to and from work, which adds to congestion on local roads,” he said. Mr Thorpe said the council was “constantly advocating [the state government] for more parking at our local train stations”. In the past year, the council has issued 919 parking tickets to illegally-parked vehicles in the streets around Tarneit station.

Clay delay adds to tip costs By Alesha Capone Construction of a new cell at the Werribee tip is continuing to cause problems and additional costs for Wyndham council. Wyndham council’s director of city operations Stephen Thorpe, said the construction of cell five at the Refuse Disposal Facility in Wests Road has been delayed by about three months because of a delay in receiving a supply of clay for the construction of the clay lining system. “Once the clay arrived, its quality was not up

to the required standard and additional clay was sourced,” Mr Thorpe said. “The wet weather following the construction of the clay lining set the project back further. “However, as long as we do not experience long or frequent periods of wet weather in the coming months, we expect construction to be

complete by December.” Mr Thorpe said the council was still calculating the additional costs caused by the delay. The council’s draft budget for 2019-20 allocated $7.125 million to design and construct new cells at the tip. The council last year had to fork out an extra $847,000 when the contractors re-quoted the project to comply with Environment Protection Authority regulations not originally taken into account. Contractors Mackenzie Environmental,

originally awarded the $380,000 contract (with a $50,000 contingency) to build cell 5 in November 2016, re-quoted the job for $1.161 million (plus a contingency of $116,100). The new quote included a groundwater collection system, an additional geotech-style membrane and increased testing and sampling. The council also spent about $475,000 fighting a Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal review into the EPA’s decision to approve four new cells at the Wests Road landfill.

Women box for wellness A series of boxing workshops will be held in Hoppers Crossing with the aim of empowering women. Chevy Lowndes, a boxer and personal trainer, said she was hosting the seven-week series, titled Boxing for Women’s Wellness, in the hope of reaching women of all ages and backgrounds. “I love empowering women through boxing, I love training people combinations and something new that they haven’t learned before,” she said. “It’s great for confidence, self-esteem and empowerment, wellness, energy and strength. “It’s also great for people with depression, anxiety and stress issues. “They can come into the gym, shut the door behind them and it’s all about them.” Ms Lowndes said the workshops would also be aimed at women experiencing loneliness and social isolation.

“It also provides a safe place to work out, because it’s only them in here,” she said. “Boxing is such a great therapy.” Ms Lowndes said she would donate a portion of the funds raised through the workshops to SleepBus, which was started by Melbourne entrepreneur Simon Rowe, with the aim of giving homeless people and their pets a safe place to sleep. The workshops will be held on Tuesdays and Sundays at the Tarneit Boxing Gym, corner Hammer Court and Lentini Street, Hoppers Crossing. Postal win for the south By Alesha Capone The Werribee South General Store is celebrating a successful campaign to become a Community Postal Agency. In February, Star Weekly reported that the store’s owner, Gary Hardman, had begun a petition to become a Community Postal Agency (CPA). Australia Post has more than 700 community agencies which offer varying mail and postage services.

Mr Hardman started the petition in response to customer comments that they would like a local postal service to pick up parcels. About 600 people signed the petition. Last week the general store officially started operating as a CPA. “I would like to thank Australia Post and our friend and customer Tim, who helped us along the way,” Mr Hardman said. “We’ve been getting about 10 to 15 parcels per day. “We’ve had a lot of people saying how fantastic it is they can stay in Werribee South to pick up a parcel. “Also, we’re open until 6pm, which gives people a bit of flexibility, as most post offices close at 5pm or 5.30pm.” Mr Hardman said the store carried a range of prepaid options for people wanting to send envelopes and parcels in the mail, and that customers could also pick up parcels in-store. Concern over dumped trolleys Hundreds of abandoned shopping trolleys have been collected by Wyndham council in the past 12 months. The council’s environment and sustainability portfolio holder, Cr Heather Marcus, said the council had received 115 reports of abandoned trolleys and 200 trolleys had been collected. “Abandoned trolleys are a major issue in our parks and reserves,” Cr Marcus said. “They are an eyesore and can be dangerous to the community when placed on footpaths or roads.” Cr Marcus said trolleys dumped in creeks and rivers could also cause a build-up of debris and contamination. “We need everyone to step up and do their part for the environment, so I ask shoppers to do the right thing and bring their trolleys back to their local supermarkets after they offload their groceries,” she said. “We encourage the retailers to be proactive and roll out new trolley technology, including a greater use of wheel locks and coin operated trolleys, together with a trolley tagging systems.” Community members can report stray trolleys by calling Wyndham City Council on 9742 0777. Petition calls for more trains By Alesha Capone More than 1160 people have signed a petition calling for more frequent V/Line train services to run through Tarneit and Wyndham Vale stations during peak hours. The Change.org petition was started by local commuter Eldhose Varghese. The petition states there are “long intervals between services during the peak hours” for trains travelling through the two stations to the city and return. Mr Varghese said if commuters missed the

5.16pm service from the CBD to Wyndham Vale, they had to wait another 30 minutes for the next train. “Often, then when the next train comes, it will only run with three carriages and everyone will literally push each other to try to get on,” he said. Mr Varghese also mentions the issue of trains running short in the petition. “Unfortunately, many V/Line services run with reduced capacity [three carriages only)] during these peak hours which makes it almost impossible for the residents of Wyndham Vale/

Tarneit to board the train,” the petition states. “This results in a delay in our daily plans/ office hours. “This seems to be happening more often now. “As you understand it’s not easy to be excused for being late to office just because a train is late/reduced capacity/cancelled.” Mr Varghese said often the train was so crowded that passengers had to stand in a marked-off section of the carriages located near the conductor’s office, which has a ‘no standing’ sign. “When the train is particularly full, it will

not stop at Williams Landing or Tarneit station,” he said. Mr Varghese said that tensions could also become strained between passengers when the train was particularly full, with “ugly” comments being made by some travellers. “I don’t want to hear the situation one day escalates or that someone got hurt,” he said. Mr Varghese said he and his fellow commuters felt “very stressed” by the situation, which is why he decided to start the petition. The Department of Transport was contacted for comment.

However, Peake does have something in common with her character, who works as a mechanic at her father’s car shop. The show will be staged by the Werribee-based arts education group Dynamic Performance Australia. The musical, inspired by Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, features Michael Butera and Madison Peake. The two performers, who hail from Bundoora and West Foostcray respectively, said All Shook Up had a cast of 60 children and adults. “It’s nice working with such a big group, I love kids – we’re like a family,” Peake said. Man jailed for child sex abuse By Alesha Capone A man who spent a month living with a missing teenage girl at a Werribee boarding house has pleaded guilty to one charge of sexually penetrating a child. Michael Livori, 52, was sentenced to three years and six months imprisonment, with a non-parole period of two years and six months, in the County Court last month. Livori, also pleaded guilty to 23 charges in relation to breaching of an interim personal

safety intervention order. The court heard that Livori met the 15-year-old girl, who later lived with him, through her ex-boyfriend. At the time, the girl was living in a residential care facility overseen by the Department of Health and Human Services. In December 2017, the girl moved into Livori’s room at a Werribee boarding house. County Court Judge James Parrish said the girl was listed as a “missing person” from December 1, 2017 until January 2, 2018, when

she was “picked up” by police. Judge Parrish said that in January last year, the girl told a foster carer she was “kept” in Livori’s room for a month, without any of the other men living in the boarding house knowing of her presence. “The complainant also stated that you forced her to give you oral sex and that you supplied her with drugs and food,” Judge Parrish said. The court heard that the charge of sexually penetrating a child, which Livori pleaded guilty to, occurred on January 2 last year.

Women with drive A scholarship program for women in, or wishing to join, the transport industry has been established by Transport Women Australia Limited and Daimler Truck and Bus Australia Pacific. Scholarships will be offered to four women this year, to undertake a course that will advance their careers or expand their knowledge to enhance their current position, or give other women the chance to become part of the industry. Daimler Truck and Bus Australia Pacific president and chief executive, Daniel Whitehead, said the company was proud to work with Transport Women Australia Limited – an organisation which represents women in the transport industry – to sponsor the ‘Driving the Difference Scholarship’ as part of its focus on gender equality. The court also heard Livori had a history of alcohol, cannabis and methamphetamine use, and had lived in Truganina until his house was sold, with “the proceeds being quickly dissipated through escalating amounts of alcohol and methamphetamine use”. In sentencing, Judge Parrish said sexual penetration of a child under the age of 16 years was “a serious offence”. The 452 days of pre-sentence detention Livori has already served will be deducted from his overall sentence.

The Hoppers Crossing boy and his mother, Kerrie Watkins, have taken part in Walk for Prems the past two years. The annual event raises funds for Life’s Little Treasures Foundation, a charity dedicated to supporting the families of babies born sick or prior to 37 weeks gestation. Miss Watkins said that during 2016, when she was 22 weeks pregnant, she started having severe migraines.

She was referred to Sunshine Hospital, where she was given medication to help her rising blood pressure and a steroid injection to help Connor’s lung development. Miss Watkins was then transferred to the Royal Women’s Hospital, where she developed pre-eclampsia and HELLP Syndrome. With medication still not helping her rising blood pressure, Miss Watkins was told that she needed an emergency cesarean. “It was really scary, but you’re obviously thinking that you’re doing the best for your baby,” she said. “It helped when my parents came to the hospital. “The support and strength of my parents, especially my mother Anne saying ‘You can do this,’ and ‘You will be alright,’ was amazing.” Connor was born not breathing and had to be resuscitated.

He stayed in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Special Care Units for 128 days and underwent surgery for a bilateral hernia at the Royal Children’s Hospital. Connor is now three years old, but Miss Watkins said his “corrected age” (which refers to the developmental age of a baby born prematurely) is two-and-a-half years. Connor continues to experience breathing difficulties because his lungs were not fully

developed at birth. Otherwise, he is a happy boy who loves the Wiggles, making artwork and taking photos. Miss Watkins encouraged Wyndham residents to support the Walk for Prems, which will be held at Albert Park Lake on Sunday, October 27. A new $4 million park and wetland in Williams Landing will be officially opened next week. The Addison Park and Wetland in Airmaid Drive includes five hectares of green space, a 3815 square metre community park with playground equipment, walking and running paths, fitness stations, barbecue facilities and seating areas. The aviation-themed playground includes a jungle gym, swing set and rope course. Seven ponds surround the parkland and a viewing jetty extends into the waters of the southernmost pond. Cedar Woods state manager Lloyd Collins said the park and wetlands complemented “the broader natural beauty and abundance of open space already available” in Williams Landing. An official opening to mark the completion of the Addison Park and Wetland will be held from noon-3pm on Saturday, October 19.

Anger over council pay increase By Alesha Capone Wyndham residents are outraged at news that Wyndham council has almost doubled spending on its senior officer salaries in a year. Star Weekly last week reported that the council paid its senior officers more than $11.75 million in the 2018-19 financial year, compared to $6.91 million in the previous 12 months. The figures were included in a council report released last month, which also disclosed the council paid 68 senior officers more than $148,000 each annually, compared to 41 for

the previous 12 months. The total includes remuneration and, in some cases, termination payments. The council’s chief people officer, Theunis Mienie, said that during the 2018-19 financial year, the council only added two new permanent and two part-time senior officer positions. “The 68 staff includes all staff who earned above $148,000,” Mr Mienie said. “However, this may not be on an ongoing basis and can be the result of an extraordinary circumstance, for example when staff have

acted in more senior positions during the year, which pushed their earnings above $148,000.” After Star Weekly posted the article on social media, several readers commented on the “ridiculous increase”. John wrote: “What a bloody disgrace! … This council is out of control and it’s the hardworking homeowner and small business people footing the bill!” Caroline said: “And we still can’t get a bloody traffic light at Sneydes and Point Cook road intersection.” Adrian wrote: “… the quality of their work has not increased

and the population growth in the area hasn’t immediately doubled in the past 12 months. What is the justification?” Western metropolitan region MP Bernie Finn said Wyndham council was “off with the pixies” if they thought spending $11.75 million on senior officers was “acceptable”. “Considering Wyndham is such a fast-growing municipality with its population growth, you would have thought they’d be better spending the money on serving the community instead of almost doubling their spending on senior bureaucrats,” Mr Finn said.

Cooking for a cause A group of young netballers from the Wyndham Victory Netball Club cooked up a delicious fundraising project at the weekend. Members of the club’s Under-11s teams hosted a sausage sizzle to raise funds for the Pink Ribbon Foundation. Coach of the Under-11 Jewels, Jen Bolger said the youngsters raised $661.95 in cash on the day, plus an additional $120 in online donations through their official Pink Ribbon fundraising webpage. “They were just so happy to have raised so much for a good cause,” Mrs Bolger said. “Pink Ribbon is a wonderful cause and the NBCF (National Breast Cancer Foundation) do an awesome job.” Mrs Bolger said the sausage sizzle was held outside Tasman Meats in Werribee, which donated the meat for the event. She said the netballers also sold drinks and chocolates, gave drink bottles and pink ribbons

out to their customers and tin-rattled to collect donations. She thanked Tasman Meats, Woolworths Hogans Corner, Woolworths Tarneit Central, Dan Murphy’s Hogans Corner, House & Party and Uhelp for donating food and supplies to the fundraising event. Alesha Capone

Skunk’s stunning art A team of artistic engineers and scientists from Victoria University has created a unique installation at Pacific Werribee. The team, known as Skunk Control, has made a landscape of large colourful flowers which have been suspended from the roof of the shopping centre. The installation, titled Horizon, changes colours depending on the angle from which it is viewed. The flowers have been made from specialised optical materials that alter light as it travels through them. Skunk Patrol, which is based at Victoria University’s Footscray Park campus, takes its inspiration from technology, design, art, myths, science and engineering.

The team aims to create art which provides audiences with a sense of wonderment and opportunities to make discoveries. Skunk Patrol, is made up of VU engineers, scientists and staff from an educational background, and runs outreach and learning programs focused on the art and science which underpins its creations. Skunk Control founder Nick Athanasiou said that while many people think science and art are quite different, both ask “the big questions”. “A scientist’s lab is not very different than an artist’s studio for searching, thinking, creating and doing,” he said.

The number of people seeking help for basics such as food and housing is increasing every year, according to Uniting Wyndham. In the lead-up to Anti-Poverty Week (October 13-19) staff from the support and housing organisation spoke of the rising demand. Housing co-ordinator Deb Gorsuch said 5046 people had reached out to Uniting Wyndham in the 2015-16 financial year, that grew to 6747 people in 2016-17 and 7529 in 2017-18. “It’s just getting higher and higher,” she said. Mrs Gorsuch said the municipality’s population growth, high rate of births, family violence and lack of affordable housing all contributed to the demand for assistance. She said their clients were often on Centrelink benefits, the most common being single adults or single-parent families with a child aged eight or below, who were receiving $604.70 per fortnight. Many clients spent 55 per cent or more of their income on rent. “There is a significant demand for housing, and a lot of single people on Newstart who can’t afford private rental – and so in the meantime they are either sleeping rough, on someone’s couch or sharing,” she said. Uniting Wyndham’s volunteer programs co-ordinator Shelley Johnston said that on a daily basis, anywhere from two to 35 people in Werribee requested a food parcel. The organisation relies mainly on state and federal government funding. “We see an increase [in people seeking assistance] every year, but … we’re not getting an increase in funding,” Ms Johnston said. Uniting Wyndham recently cut its food parcel service from five days per week to four because of a lack of funding. Details: www.antipovertyweek.org.au

The Western Region Concert Band and SingWest have launched a new concert series. An Evening With Christine Anu in Werribee next week will be the first of the series. The Western Region Concert Band, which was formed in 1977, is made up of talented musicians from the west. Saxophonist Andrew Houston, who has been a member of the band for more than 25 years, will this year celebrate his 20th year as musical director. For the past 18 years, the band has also presented the long-standing Last Night of the Proms’ events held in Williamstown, which featured artists such as James Morrison, Leo Sayer and Colleen Hewitt. The band’s vice president Clare Perry said that this year, the band had decided to move in a new direction and host a more intimate type of concert, “An Evening With …”. “Christine will perform her classic songs – Island Home, Sunshine on a Rainy Day Day, Party and ‘Coz I’m Free. “She will also sing a selection of songs including Aretha Franklin hits.” The concert will be held on Saturday October 19, at 7.30pm. Ink illustrates an art form Wyndham youngsters brushed up on their art skills during the school holidays last week. Cathy Mackay, who runs Artizzons Art Classes at the Wyndham Arts Incubator, hosted a session to teach children and teenagers about creating charcoal and collage artworks on paper on Thursday morning, followed by a session on ink illustrations during the afternoon. New bins ready for old items Wyndham council will install e-waste and clothing drop-off bins at three locations as part of a new trial. E-waste and clothing drop-off hubs will be set up at Manor Lakes Community Learning Centre, Wyndham Park Community Centre and Arndell Park Community Centre as part of a three month trial. recycle used electronic items and old clothing. “The drop-off sites will have secure bins for residents to recycle their small e-waste items such as laptops and electrical appliances as well as clothing, toys and textiles including shoes

and handbags,” she said. “To reduce the risk of illegal dumping, these bins are equipped with sensors to notify collection drivers when they are getting close to capacity.” The council will be working with the SCRgroup, one of Australia’s largest clothing reuse and recycling companies, which sends the unwanted clothing to developing countries and provides employment opportunities for people living with a disability. According to Sustainability Victoria,

recycling clothing can help to conserve raw materials, save water and energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and landfill and provide affordable clothing to families and individuals in need. In addition, Australians produce an estimated 140,000 tonnes of e-waste each year, but only about four per cent of this is recycled. On average, a family of five will discardaabout 1.4 tonnes of e-waste every 10 years, including monitors, batteries and printers.

Manor Lakes mania The Manor Lakes Halloween event is set to return this year, even bigger and spookier than ever. One of the event’s organisers, Maria Lodola-Price, said the idea for the annual fundraising event was born in 2012, when she and her husband joined their neighbours, Stephanie and Hadyn Pettingill, to decorate their houses for Halloween. “We became known as the ‘Halloween houses’ by kids in the area,” she said. The event became a fundraiser for the Starlight Children’s Foundation, and now attracts thousands of visitors every year. Ms Lodola-Price said they were hoping to raise more than $4000 for the foundation this year. “We’re expecting around 2500 people to attend our Halloween event,” Ms Lodola-Price said. “Our display includes a realistic cemetery, animatronics, life-size audio-visual projections and spooky sound effects. There will be a

MY WYNDHAM Nunzio ‘Nunz’ Materia owns Sottiles Pizza & Takeaway in Werribee, which has been in his family for more than three decades. He chats with Alesha Capone.

My uncle Giovani and his two sons, Nunz and Michael, started Sottiles back in 1988. I bought if from my uncle around 13 years ago. I first started working here back in ’93, when I was still at school, making pizzas. Giovani passed away a few years ago, Nunz now lives in Tarneit and Michael still helps out in the shop. My uncle was originally from Italy. They also founded Sottiles in Hoppers Crossing, but it has been sold since. Sometimes people confuse the two of our shops, they come here to pick up an order but they actually ordered the food from the Hoppers Crossing store. What do you enjoy about running the shop? I like making all the different pizzas, including all the weird and different combinations you can get, and making new pizzas and meeting new people. I meet lots of people. The customers are really friendly, which is great. I was born in Werribee and I still live here, so it’s good to be close to the business. Do you often get unusual orders from customers?

We had one last night – a customer requested a marinara pizza with a bolognese sauce. Do you have a favourite pizza? We have the ‘Nunz Special’. It has a tomato and cheese base, ham, salami, pineapple, capsicums and cheese and sauce on top. It’s one of my cousin’s favourite pizzas, he invented it and it’s still popular at the pizza shop. You’re located in the Quarbing Street shopping strip, how has the area around here changed in the past 30 years? It’s more populous now than what it used to be, there are no more empty blocks. It’s busier too. But I still get the same people coming to the shop, who were customers in the 1980s and ’90s, back from when I started. I remember their kids, who are now grown up and driving cars. It’s good here because it’s a quiet, residential area. Also, all the people are really friendly. The only downside of it being quiet around here is that a lot of people still don’t know we’re here, although we’ve been here for so long.

An unaccountable decision to stand at the opposite end of the signal box from his normal position probably saved a 23-year-old signal assistant from certain injury and possible death in the spectacular rail smash last Thursday morning. Don Robson was on duty at Werribee Railway Station last Thursday morning when 14 rail trucks loaded with wheat jumped the tracks and ploughed into the station causing an estimated $2 million damage.

The planned high temperature medical waste incinerator site at Laverton North was attacked by angry Laverton and Sunshine residents last Friday and Saturday. The placard-waving residents formed an unofficial protest rally outside the north-west corner of Dohertys and Hume Rds where Trident Development Technologies plans to build the incinerator.

Extensive environmental and historical studies will have to be satisfactorily completed before Parks Victoria gives its approval to the controversial Greg Norman-designed Werribee River golf course proposal. The statement comes after a meeting last Friday between Wyndham mayor Councillor Frank Purcell, Parks Victoria regional director Mr Nigel Caswell and Werribee Park director Mr Paul Sandells.

Renovate or rebuild? Time to consider the pros and cons ... The debate for the homeowner is more often between the merits – and costs – of renovating versus knocking down and rebuilding from scratch. But, what about the debate between a knockdown-rebuild (KDR), and buying a brand new, turnkey home in a greenfields development? A spokesman for the Housing Industry Association of Australia says the popularity of KDR has been rising since the early 2000s, when land prices began to soar in a market of scarce urban land supply. The greatest benefit of a KDR, he says, is that it allows the owner to stay in the same location, particularly if workplace, schools and your current routines and amenities are important considerations. Over the longer term, a new home in an established suburb should, in principle, have a higher rate of appreciation – something to consider for resale or renting the property out, according to the HIA spokesman. Architect and managing director of Archicentre Peter Georgiev recommends a KDR every time – predictably with the caveat of using an experienced design architect, allowing you to specifically tailor a design to the site, its aspect and your needs. But, a KDR client may be subject to more issues with council approvals, especially if there are design or heritage considerations. In a neighbourhood of mostly single-storey houses, for example, a double-storey house may present issues when it comes to approval.

SPORT Experienced Tarneit midfielder claims second award Todd Lawrie may have just claimed his second Ron and Thelma Angwin Medal in the past four seasons, but he’d trade them in for a shot at a premiership. The Tarneit midfielder recently claimed the award for the best and fairest player in the Western Region Football League’s division three, and said he went along to the awards night just hoping to have a good time. “I thought I had an OK year, but if you go in expecting something great and you don’t win then it’s no good,” he said. “If you go in just wanting to enjoy the night and you win you feel a bit more grateful I suppose. “I thought it was probably one of my better years to date. I’m getting a bit old now so I guess the experience is shining through. “Personally, it was nice to win this award, but as a team I thought we could have done a

bit better. We got bundled out in the first final, and I’d rather win a premiership than the individual stuff.” Lawrie, 29, last won the award in 2016, and this year finished just two votes clear of Albanvale’s Ricky Cameron. He said the maturity of the younger players around him helped him to maintain a high standard himself, and also improved the team’s performance. “I think a lot of the kids are now getting to that stage where they can take some of the pressure off me,” Lawrie said. “I came to the club as a senior figure, but these younger guys are now taking on that responsibility and it’s freed me up a lot.” While Lawrie missed Tarneit’s final with illness, he said the group had the talent to push for team rewards, but needed to improve their physicality in the big games.

“We were fairly consistent, obviously good enough to get to finals but not good enough to get the main award,” he said. “We probably need to harden up a bit as a collective. I think when games got a bit physical we were getting found out a bit, so we need to be better in that regard. “We’ve definitely got the kids with the pace and the skills, we’ve just got to improve in a few areas, and that will come with more experience and another year of footy.” Ewen McRae

Proud to be a westie By Ewen McRae Lucas Rocci is keeping a level head, but he could be on the verge of continuing a strong recent trend from the NAB League. The Western Jets captain recently won the Morrish Medal as the best and fairest player in the state under-18 competition, and despite missing out on selection for the national championships and not receiving an invite to the AFL draft combines, he is keeping his fingers crossed for a fairytale draft night. “I’ve just got to wait it out and see what happens from here,” Rocci said. “There’s definitely some interest there that I can’t really say much about, but I just hope I can get on a list and show what I can do.” If he is picked up, it will continue a strong recent run of Morrish medallists making an impact in the AFL – Clayton Oliver, Hugh McCluggage, Jack Higgins and Liam Stocker all won the award on their way to being drafted in the past four seasons. Oliver, now a two-time best and fairest winner at Melbourne, also missed national championship and combine selection. “There’s so many stories of players missing out in under-18s and getting drafted and having success, so that does give me hope,” Rocci said. “Look at someone like Kane Lambert. Missed getting drafted, came back and now he’s a two-time premiership player at Richmond, so we’ll just see what happens from here. “I took a few weeks off to recharge the batteries, but I’m back in some gym and running work now to keep myself ready.” Rocci put together a stellar year for the Jets, flourishing in the second half when he moved to half-back to utilise his elite disposal. He was selected on the bench in the team of the year, but said he was shocked when he started to creep up the leaderboard in the medal count as well. “It was pretty amazing, because I wasn’t expecting to win anything when I went along,” he said. “Missing Vic Metro was disappointing, but anyone who misses has a bit of extra motivation. I just looked at it as ‘footy is footy’ and just keep playing and see where it takes you. “All we wanted to do was get better as a team and as people, and I think everyone in our side can say we did that. The medal is just the icing on the cake.” Rocci is the first Jets player to take home the award, and he said he was proud to show that the western suburbs can produce. “It’s definitely special, and I’m very honoured,” he said. “I look at the young blokes coming through the program and the western region, and it shows them that anything is possible coming out of the west. 40 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 9, 2019

United ready for A-League opener Western United has finalised its preparations for its first A-League game this weekend, playing out a hard-fought draw with Western Sydney. The A-League’s newest club travelled from its Caroline Springs training base to Geelong to take on the Wanderers at GMHBA Stadium, and despite leading for almost the entire match it allowed a late equaliser and had to settle for a draw. It was the team’s final warm-up game ahead of its inaugural match in the big time against Wellington on Sunday afternoon. Former Socceroo Scott McDonald wasted little time in getting the game on United’s terms, finding space in the box to drill home the first goal of the match after just two minutes. United had the better of play in the opening half, with McDonald coming close just five minutes later, and Italian Alessandro Diamanti also curling in a good shot only to see it tipped over the crossbar by the keeper. United saw its lead disappear in the 80th minute, when the Wanderers found the back of the net with a low shot from just inside the box. Despite both sides pressing for the winner the scores were locked at full-time. While the club is preparing for its first outing for points this weekend, there is also plenty of action off the pitch with the appointment of Chris Pehlivanis as chief executive of the football club. Pehlivanis joins United from AFL club Essendon, where he held the role of chief financial officer, and has also previously worked with Football Federation Australia. He said he was excited to be joining the fledgling club and helping to grow the game. “I am honoured to be part of the next stage of the organisation’s growth,” he said. “There is so much potential and … I am looking forward to playing my part in building our great game with our vibrant and valued community across Melbourne’s west.” United will play Wellington Phoenix at 4pm, October 13. Rhodes leads the way By Ewen McRae Hoppers Crossing had to grind it out in the opening round of the sub-district cricket season, with their match against Melton delicately poised at stumps. With a delayed start due to weather and pitch conditions, Hoppers Crossing was sent in by Melton at Hogans Road Reserve, and despite wickets falling steadily they got through to 7-177. The Cats had Jack Rhodes to thank for their score, with the opener batting for four hours to post 93, the only batsman to score more than 20. Hoppers Crossing captain Justin Goegan said Rhodes showed what was possible with a bit of determination, and said his side was happy with where they sat in the game so far. “We spoke before the day about being around 180 to 200, and we’re pretty close to that so that’s a good day really,” Goegan said. “We probably would have liked a couple more wickets in hand, but we’ll have 13 overs next week to get as many as we can and I think we can defend that. “We had three partnerships of over 40, and Jack was the mainstay of those. It would have been nice to see him get his hundred, but he toughed it out, got hit on the body and helmet a few times, but he was clearly the pick of the batsmen on the day.” Rhodes and Cameron Nicol (14) kicked off the innings with a 47-run opening stand, and when Nicol fell there was another good partnership between Rhodes and Adrian Myers. Several Cats batsmen made starts but could not go on with it, including Myers (12), Sanka Abeyruwan (19) and Brett Smith (15). With just 67 overs bowled on the day, play will start early this Saturday so Hoppers Crossing can play out the last 13 overs of its innings before Melton begins the chase. Goegan said he was confident his side could once again push for finals, having narrowly missed out last summer. “We haven’t really changed our squad too much from last year, so we’re pretty much all home-grown players looking to go round again,” he said. “We don’t have the superstars or the big paid players, but we all think that we can get the job done. “We’ve had a good pre-season, everyone enjoyed it and is on board with the direction the club is heading from the top down. “We believe internally that we’re good enough to play finals, and then once we’re there anything can happen, so we’re here to match it with the top teams.”

Werribee’s First XI is well placed to open its sub-district cricket season with a win, after a good day with both ball and bat against Croydon at the weekend. After winning the toss and sending Croydon in to bat, Werribee’s bowlers were able to strangle the hosts and take regular wickets as they dismissed Croydon for just 110 in 51 overs. Jonathon Burton picked up four wickets and got good support from Brad Apps, who snared three of his own. In reply, Werribee made some good inroads into the total and will resume this week on 1-49. Werribee’s 2nd XI did not enjoy such a solid start to its season, with Croydon batting through the day to post 8-240 from 80 overs. The Croydon openers put on 141 before Traveen Pandithakoralege got the breakthrough, but from there the home side was able to make regular inroads. Brody Black had no luck with the new ball, but did plenty of damage through the middle order as he snared 4-56, while Pandithakoralege finished with 2-57.

Giants tough it out to record a narrow win Werribee had to work hard for it, but it came away from its round two Vic Summer Baseball League clash with a vital win. Hosting Malvern, the Giants gave up an early lead, but led by some strong pitching from Trent Pantalleresco and a good all-round hitting display they recovered to take the win, 8-6. The Giants were missing some players and had others playing in different positions, and Malvern took full advantage as they got out to an early lead with a run in the first innings. The Braves scored twice in the third, but the Giants got their own score rolling at the same time with two runs. Pantalleresco started on the mound for Werribee, but it was with the bat that he made the early impact as he struck a two-run home run in the middle innings to get his side the lead for the first time. While Malvern was able to tie the scores again in the sixth, the Giants capitalised on some wild pitching in the eighth inning to

take the decisive lead, and held on in the final inning to take the win. Pantalleresco was the star for the hosts, pitching the whole game and getting four hits. The Giants had 15 hits for the day, and coach John Curnow said it was pleasing to take a win that could easily have slipped away. “Their [Malvern] pitchers were pretty good all day, but we were just able to get base runners on and score enough,” Curnow said. “We didn’t have much pitching relief, so Trent [Pantalleresco] gave us all he had and that was fantastic. He got better as the game went on. “Malvern got some quality players in the off season, so I don’t think they would have been expecting the loss, so we’re feeling really good early in the season.” After falling short of the grand final last summer, Curnow said his side was aiming high for this one. “We want to get to division one, and we’ve got to make finals to do that so we’re aiming to

A nice shape particularly at the front with what we reckon is one of the best grille shapes in the current Ford range. The sides have neat swage lines, but the side-rear area is rather generic and hard to pick from competitors. There are some neat touches at the back, with a full width garnish below the window.

Interior

The dash area is neat and tidy with good correlation between the instrument panel and the central display panel. We also appreciate the way the centre section works its way down to the console – and in particular the circular gear selector. Styling of the seats is good.

Safety

The big Ford has a full suite of crash avoidance technology including autonomous emergency braking if an inattentive driver has not seen what’s happening in front of them. Occupant injury in a crash will be minimised by eight airbags including driver and front

There’s good interior room for four adults, five without too much of a squeeze if those in the rear seat are on the slim side. Boot space is very good, with a capacity of 600 litres to the window line. This expands to a voluminous 1860 litres with the rear seats folded down and the cargo loaded to the ceiling. Fuel consumption from the diesel is impressively low, running in the five to seven litres per hundred kilometres range on motorways and gentle country roads. Around town it climbs to seven to 10 litres per hundred. Keep in mind that diesel fuel in Australia is often charged at significantly more than petrol, sometimes as much as 20 cents more. Ford Endura joins the urban Ford EcoSport, family-sized Escape and the big, off-road capable Everest to provide for all Ford lovers in the SUV market.
