Sienna and Lara know that eggs are a subject worth getting your feathers ruffled for. The sisters, pictured in Werribee, are looking forward to World Egg Day, which is celebrated on the second Friday in October. The day was founded by the International Egg Commission (IEC) at a 1996 conference in Vienna. The idea behind the day is to raise awareness of the important place which eggs have in human nutrition. According to the Australian Eggs organisation, consumers now eat 35 per cent more eggs than they did a decade ago, with the average Australian enjoying more than 18,100 in their lifetime. Australian eggs are now so popular that about 15 million eggs are eaten every day, which reflects annual consumption in Australia of 5.5 billion eggs per year. Alesha Capone

Council’s salary furore By Alesha Capone Wyndham council has almost doubled spending on its senior officer salaries in a year, sparking community outrage. The council paid its senior officers more than $11.75 million in the 2018-19 financial year, compared to $6.91 million in the previous 12 months. The figures were included in a council report released last month, which also disclosed the council paid 68 senior officers more than $148,000 each annually, compared to 41 for the previous 12 months. The total includes

remuneration and, in some cases, termination payments. While the report did not name those who earned more than $148,000, or their exact positions, it did reveal their salary bands. In the past financial year, the council had three officers who earned between $320,000 and $359,999, compared to none previously. The report stated two officers earned between $230,000 to $249,999 (compared to one previously). The report also listed Wyndham council as having: • Three officers earning between $220,000 to $229,999 (none previously)

• Fifteen officers earning between $150,000 and $159,999 (three previously) • Eight officers earning between $160,000 and $169,999 (seven previously) • Twelve officers earning between $170,000 to $189,999 (13 previously). The council’s chief people officer, Theunis Mienie, said that during the 2018-19 financial year, the council only added two new permanent and two part-time senior officer positions. “The 68 staff includes all staff who earned above $148,000,” Mr Mienie said. “However, this may not be on an ongoing basis and can be the result of an extraordinary circumstance, for

example when staff have acted in more senior positions during the year, which pushed their earnings above $148,000.” Werribee South Ratepayers Association president Dr Joe Garra said: “There are many things in Werribee South that they could be spending money on, instead of appointing more senior officers”. Western metropolitan region MP Bernie Finn said: “I have to say, I am gobsmacked … they would have the audacity to spend this sort of money on highly-paid bureaucrats. “It just seems to me that the council is out of control.”

Huge rise in Wyndham crime By Alesha Capone Drug, robberies and weapons offences have driven an almost nine per cent increase in recorded crimes across Wyndham in the 12 months to June. Latest figures released by the Crime Statistics Agency showed there were 15,305 crimes recorded in Wyndham in the past financial year, compared with 14,0444 offences in the previous 12 months - a rise of 8.9 per cent.

In the Wyndham area drug offences rose from 675 to 894, robbery offences rose from 155 to 186, weapons and explosives offences increased from 366 to 410, abductions went from 11 to 29 and homicide and related offences doubled from two offences to four. Assaults and related offences also increased from 1274 to 1323. While reports of family violence went up, non-family violence assaults were mostly down. Burglaries and break-and-enters in

Wyndham decreased substantially, from 1334 to 1114 offences in the 12 month period. Residential aggravated burglaries fell from 98 to 82 offences. Other types of crimes which fell in Wyndham included sexual offences (from 374 to 367) and stalking, harassment and threatening behaviour (401 to 367). Dangerous and negligent acts endangering people, such as dangerous driving, dropped from 189 to 173), as did public nuisance

offences (125 to 104). According to a media release from the state opposition, the latest data also showed that one in 78 Victorians are criminal offenders and one in 33 Victorians are a victim of crime. Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton said crimes in which people suddenly found themselves face-to-face with an intruder in their home, or had their car violently stolen from them in the street, were an “absolute priority” for the force.

Police have honed in on dozens of youths in a crackdown on rising thefts at electronic stores in Wyndham and other hotspots around the state. A spate of smash-and-grab “swarming” raids on electronics stores between July and September prompted Victoria Police last month to form a specialist squad of 10 officers. The team, working alongside Taskforce Wayward, made 37 arrests of high priority offenders and executed 54 arrest warrants across the state in the past month. North West Metro commander Tim Hansen said the new style of offending was a cause of concern. “Shop stealing isn’t new to us, it isn’t new to the community,” Commander Hansen said. “What has grabbed our attention is the increased use of violence, the use of numbers to intimidate what is predominantly junior retail staff who are vulnerable and aren’t well positioned to resist or stop this offending, and nor would we expect them to. “What we are seeing … is violent high-end offending.” “Concerningly these offenders were aged between 14 and 17 years of age,” commander Hansen said. Building business skills Wyndham Park Primary School pupils meant business at the schoolâ€™s recent market day. The market day was the culmination of a 10 week Kidpreneur Challenge which aimed to teach pupils in grades 4-6 how to think, act and create like entrepreneurs. The Smith Family and Entropolis partnered to help the school deliver the program, during which pupils built their own micro-business â€“ developing a product or a service, creating a full business plan and sales pitch, and then going to market to their peers and the community. Grade 5 pupil Latisha and her group made â€˜slimeâ€™. â€œWe sold two products: normal slime, and slime with glitter,â€? she said.

â€œOur group decided to create slime to help other students, who may be feeling angry or stressed. If they feel anxious, they can squish the slime and maybe feel a bit better. â€œI really enjoyed the teamwork part of Kidpreneur â€Ś It was really fun to make stuff with my friends.â€? â– Dragana, in grade 6, said her team learned a lot about market research and delegating work among the group. â€œOur team made special anklets and scrunchies,â€? Littering fine is payback: Driver By Alesha Capone A woman who says she has never smoked has been fined $661 after being accused of throwing a cigarette butt out of her car window. Liza, who asked for her surname to be withheld, received the fine from the Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA), after an unknown person reported that she threw a cigarette butt from her vehicle at Leakes Road, Truganina on September 19, just after 4.20pm. Liza said she was on the road at this time, but she did not commit the offence.

She believes a woman driving in a car near her could possibly be the person who reported her to the EPA. Liza said the woman developed “road rage”

King of the donations A Hoppers Crossing store is thinking inside the box to raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Storage King is “going pink” throughout October for its annual McGrath Foundation fundraising initiative during which the store donates a dollar from the sale of every standard moving box or carry box. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a time to understand the impact of breast cancer in the community, support those living with a previous diagnosis and their families. Storage King store manager Kylie Willan said the fundraiser was a way to give back to the community. “We do it every year and Storage King goes pink for the cause,” Ms Willan said. “This year we’re also selling badges, wrist bands and there will be a hamper drawn on November 1.

Plan to stop cliff catastrophe By Alesha Capone Wyndham council has approved a $3 million master plan for the K Road cliffs, after investigations found erosion at the site “needs to be rectified as a matter of priority to preserve the cliffs and ensure the safety of visitors”. Council gave the master plan a tick of approval last month, with the aim of reducing erosion and enhancing natural vegetation, habitat and ecology at the site. The master plan states that erosion of the cliffs has continued since 2014, “as evidenced

by tension cracks at the top of the cliffs”. It attributed the cracks to existing road-side drainage swales, which are too flat to drain effectively, and stated that material accumulation and “insufficient maintenance” had contributed to blockages. This has resulted in water from adjoining properties, the road reserve and carpark “flowing uncontrollably over the ground surface and down the cliff face, causing the eroded channels and tunnelling that is destabilising the cliffs and may lead to sections of the cliffs falling into the river”.

The master plan outlines that all site stormwater be re-directed to surface drainage along the west edge of K Road in an effort to halt further erosion. A new pipe system is also recommended for installation along the east side of K Road, to transport water to the existing river outfall at the southern end of the cliffs’ site. The master plan includes construction of a new fence eight metres from the cliff-face, and for visitors to be kept out of this area, as this is the zone that is “most at risk of collapse”. It also suggests planting prickly shrubs to

discourage people from climbing on the cliffs. The K Road Cliffs site is owned by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, but the council has managed the site for many years under an informal agreement. A council report stated that the cost of implementing the master plan would be about $3.042 million. The council has allocated $880,000 funding for drainage works at the K Road Cliffs, and will seek further funding from the state government.

Festival lights up trail The Federation Trail lit the way during the Wyndham Trail of Lights. The eight-day community lantern and light festival, which wound up last week, included installations by Wyndham artists, lanterns made by residents and decorative lighting illuminating the trail route. Festival organiser Ian MacGowan, of the Williams Landing Estate Residents’ Association, said the festival aimed to encourage residents to explore the 4.5 kilometre trail. “The festival creates a sense of belonging and connections between residents, with locals, schools and community groups helping make the lanterns,” Mr MacGowan said. He said that the event was made possible by a $153,500 grant through the state government’s Pick My Project initiative last year. “The project funding saw infrastructure upgrades made [along the Federation Trail]

improving safety with the replacement of fencing along the main outfall sewer, at nearby crossing points over the disused sewer line and the installation of reused shipping containers for new community spaces,” Mr MacGowan said. Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly said the festival was a great way to discover Wyndham. “Federation Trail is such a popular walking and riding path for the Wyndham community and the series of art installations and lanterns created by local residents had it looking magnificent,” Ms Connolly said. Journey of salvation By Esther Lauaki Tarneit man Les Porter’s tricycle has clocked up more kilometres than one can handle. This year will mark the 10th anniversary of the Wyndham 1000 event, in which Mr Porter cycles hundreds of kilometres to raise funds for the Salvation Army. Mr Porter, a Salvation Army soldier, sets off on his annual journey on Saturday, October 19 starting from Pacific Werribee. Six local schools, Rotary Club of Wyndham members, residents and Salvation Army members will join him for stints along the way. “This year is a special one because it’s the 10th journey I’ve made consecutively,” Mr Porter said. “This was only ever started as a one-off event. “In that year [2009], there were many government cutbacks to community groups like the Salvation Army, and at Christmas it got to the stage where the Salvos were going to be short of food to give to families in need. That’s why I started. “It’s been an enjoyment, not a task … It’s become a community event.” The ride will take him on several big loops alongside the Werribee River from Hogans Road through to the Princes Freeway and along the Federation Trail. Mr Porter said he would cycle 500 kilometres around Wyndham during his fundraising efforts, and that members from the Rotary Club of Wyndham – which sponsors his tricycle every year – would ride an additional 500 kilometres. He said he would aim to complete about 40 kilometres per day over four weeks. “My abilities have diminished since 10 years ago,” Mr Porter said. “We’ve raised $135,000 dollars [since

Library lesson saves money A program that aims to attract people to libraries instead of gaming venues will come to Werribee next year. The state government has announced it will provide funding to bring the Libraries After Dark program to the Werribee Plaza library at the Pacific Werribee shopping centre, in 2020. Funded as a pilot by the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation in 2017, the Libraries After Dark project provides “vulnerable Victorians” with an alternative to gaming venues. Under the program, libraries extend their opening hours into the evening.

A Singeaporean-based company has entered into a conditional forward purchase agreement to buy a yet-to-be-built warehouse in Wyndham for $18.4 million. Real estate investment trust Mapletree Logistics Trust (MLT) has announced it will buy the one-storey logistics facility, to be constructed at 15 Boterro Place in Truganina. A statement from MLT said that when constructed, the warehouse would have a leasable area of 15,100 square metres. Construction of the warehouse is due to finish in 2022.

West scores low in ‘liveability’ By Alesha Capone Melbourne’s western suburbs have been ranked fourth-worst in the nation in a “liveability” study conducted into Australia’s metropolitan areas. Market research company Ipsos last month released its annual Life in Australia survey, which measures community values and the liveability of areas by asking 10,000 residents to rank factors such as access to high-quality health services and education; public transport;

job prospects; a lack of road congestion; social cohesion; and shopping, dining and leisure. Out of the 42 metropolitan areas ranked by the study, Melbourne’s west placed fourth-last with an overall “liveability” score of 53.1 per cent. Melbourne’s north-west placed sixth-last on the list, with an overall score of 53.7 per cent. Sydney’s south-west ranked lowest with a score of 49.1 per cent. Perth’s inner suburbs placed first with 68.6 per cent, while Melbourne’s highest-ranked

area was the inner south, which placed fourth with a score of 65 per cent. Three years ago, PwC Australia (PricewaterhouseCoopers) released a report into the liveability of Melbourne’s various regions. According to the report, Melbourne’s west “has been the fastest growing region of an already fast-growing city, and this is likely to remain the case for some time to come”. “The proximity of affordable and developable land, combined with significant infrastructure

investments such as the Western Ring Road and Regional Rail, have helped Melbourne’s west to boom,” the report stated. In addition, the report said sustained population growth in areas including Werribee, Melton, Caroline Springs and Point Cook was “increasingly placing pressure on infrastructure, and affecting the accessibility and liveability of our suburbs in the west”. But the report states some of the positives in the west included access to arts and community hubs.

Environment story wins award Pupils from a Point Cook school put on the performance of a lifetime when they participated in the Wakakirri Story Dance Challenge state finals last month. Carranballac P-9 College students won the Best Environmental Story Award at the show, after staging a theatrical piece inspired by broadcaster and natural historian David Attenborough. The state finals, held at the Palais Theatre in St Kilda, followed the Wakakirri heats held in Frankston, Moonee Ponds, Bendigo and Geelong earlier this year. Wakakirri is Australia’s largest performing arts event for schools with separate events for primary, secondary, dance schools and schools in remote areas. Rhinos running riot The Ugandan flag took pride of place at Werribee Open Range Zoo as volunteers celebrated World Rhino Day last week. The zoo’s seven Southern white rhinos enjoyed treats and treasures, including hay, pellets and interesting smells, like dung spread around, as part of an enrichment program designed to encourage the animals to fossick and forage as they would in the wild. Rhino keeper Lauren Irving said World Rhino Day was particularly special for 10-year-old Kifaru – his first at Werribee Zoo after arriving from Halls Gap Zoo last month. “Kifaru has settled in really well,” Ms Irving said. “We are delighted to have him here in time for World Rhino Day and watch him enjoy his enrichment.

“It’s a really important day to raise awareness for rhinos doing it tough in the wild.” Ms Irving said it was the third year of Zoos Victoria’s international conservation partnership with Rhino Fund Uganda, an organisation fighting for rhinos on the frontline. There are less than 19,000 Southern white rhinos in the wild. Meanwhile, Werribee Open Range Zoo’s Sunset Safari is back this summer, with proceeds going towards supporting rhino conservation and Rhino Fund Uganda. Big tick for park upgrades By Alesha Capone The lawns are looking lovelier and the trees more terrific at several of Wyndhamâ€™s parks. Wyndham council has upgraded 47 parks within the past financial year, as part of its $11.4 million Wyndham Parks 2021 project. The council last week announced the 2018-19 stage of the project had been completed, including the installation of 5500 plants; paving almost 3000 square metres of new walking paths; and installing 70 new park benches. Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw said Wyndham Parks 2021 was one of the councilâ€™s major

initiatives to promote healthy lifestyles. Overall, the project aims to upgrade 200 parks across the municipality. â€œWe know that spending time in your local park â€“ whether for exercising, playing with your children or simply relaxing â€“ can bring significant benefits to peopleâ€™s mental and physical health,â€? Cr Shaw said. One of the outdoor areas the council recently upgraded is W. Ison Reserve in Werribee. The reserve has a new playground, nature play area, half-court basketball court, trees, seats and a habitat garden to provide a home to wildlife. The reserve is named in honour of William Ison,

one of Werribeeâ€™s earliest residents. The Ison family has lived in the area for six generations, and 68-year-old Lindsay Ison has lived near the reserve for more than four decades. Mr Ison said he regularly takes his grandchildren â€“ including granddaughters Lily and Daisy, and grandson Slater â€“ to the park. â€œAll he wants to do is go to the park,â€? Mr Ison said. â€œItâ€™s also good to have the paths there, I can walk around there.â€? Mr Ison said his own children used to play at the reserve, and he could also remember the days when Carols by Candlelight events were held there.

Police have arrested three men following an assault and robbery in Middleton Drive, Point Cook which occurred last month. It is alleged that during the evening of September 22, a group of five offenders approached two men, aged 29 and 39. The men were allegedly assaulted while demands were made for their mobile phones. One victim managed to run away and get help, however a man who came to assist, a 26-year-old from Point Cook, was also assaulted. All three victims sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene by Ambulance Victoria paramedics. Three offenders allegedly fled the scene in a vehicle. Police later arrested three men on Gramercy Boulevard. A 20-year-old from Derrimut, a 21-year-old from South Australia and a 19-year-old from Taylors Hill are in custody assisting police with their inquiries. Police are still searching for two men, described as being aged in their late teens or early 20s, and perceived to be African in appearance. Anyone who witnessed the incident or with any information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Alesha Capone

Musician remembered Mr Humphrey’s service to the music community earned him a medal of the Order of Australia in 2012. Granddaughter Brooke Pearce said her grandfather’s generosity with his time and his patience with people will be his lasting legacy. “He was an amazing man,” Ms Pearce told Star Weekly. “He was always very supportive and caring towards others and so passionate about his music. “We’re getting lots of messages from people he influenced profoundly to either pursue music, teach or join a band.” Mr Humphrey is survived by his wife Joan, three children Lynne, Jill, Paul, eight grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren.

The RAAF band will remember much-loved leader Derrick Humphrey this week. The 92-year-old Werribee resident died on Wednesday, September 25, surrounded by his family. Mr Humphrey will be remembered for his verve for teaching and lifelong passion for music. Born in Hackney, London, Mr Humphrey moved to Werribee in 1964 where he spent the majority of his life. A saxophonist from childhood, he went on to lead the RAAF central band in Laverton and was the co-founder of the Westgate Concert Band, formed 40 years ago, to encourage young instrumentalists in western suburbs schools. He taught music at Braybrook Secondary College and Westbourne Grammar and was named Werribee Citizen of the Year in 1980.

“I came to Australia when I was really young,” Mr Avici said. “I was surrounded by a heap of love. “But growing up, a lot of the people that were around me and that I looked up to … my older cousins, brothers, were all involved in a life of crime. “[My offending] went from fighting, to weapons … when things got really serious my brother was stabbed five times in the back.” While serving time at Ravenhall Correctional Centre, Mr Avici decided to turn his life in another direction. “When I first walked into Ravenhall, I couldn’t believe it was a prison. “Being at Ravenhall was a much more positive experience for me simply because they’ve got a lot of facilities and they’re there to help you. “On the ReBuild program we built frames, we learned to fit a door, we learned to plaster a wall … things that I had no knowledge of.” The YMCA ReBuild program manager

Damian Carmody said Mr Avici was a “perfect example” of the program at work. “The ReBuild program at Ravenhall works very closely with … clinicians who speak to us about prisoners that have shown signs of wanting to make a change,” Mr Carmody said. “If they want to make a change, then we can teach them employment skills and life skills.

“Cameron came through our program in Ravenhall and we’ve employed him in commercial ReBuild and he’s now ready to go on and get full-time employment.” Mr Avici has plans to enter the rail industry. The YMCA ReBuild will receive $400,000 in support over the next two years, under a Westpac Foundation grants scheme.

Attack caught on camera By Alesha Capone A cyclist who was swooped by a magpie while riding on the Federation Trail in Werribee last month has captured the moment on camera. Tess Abbott said that as she cycled along the trail about 8am on September 22, she took out her mobile to film the view. “I had my phone out filming the path as it was really pretty with the sun and the trees that morning, then a magpie started swooping me,” she said. “I then thought, ‘I’ll just press record as it’ll probably be funny to show my husband when I got home’. “I got through the swooping then about 50m down the path it was my turn-around point, so I realised I’d have to go back through it again to get home.” Ms Abbott said that as she rode back through, still holding her mobile, she felt the magpie “snap” at her ear but did not know if it was the bird’s beak or caws. “Once I was through, I stopped and saw I had blood on my ear and it was sore but fine,” she said. “I rode home, and when I looked at the video properly, I saw I happened to get it going for my ear so I slowed it down and then saw it captured the actual snap which was pretty cool. “It also had a great angle of the magpie over my shoulder so I did a screen shot of all those frames as they were brilliant shots.” Ms Abbott said she was not injured by the magpie, and that the incident had not put her off cycling. As reported by Star Weekly last week, according to the magpiealert.com website, more than 25 swooping magpie incidents have been reported in Wyndham so far this year.

Reserve ready for action The $11 million redevelopment of Mossfiel Reserve in Hoppers Crossing is complete. The upgraded reserve includes new sports fields for cricket and rugby, six netball courts, two community pavilions, a half-court basketball court and a playground. Wyndham sports development portfolio holder Peter Maynard said the project was one of the council’s largest infrastructure projects for the year. “This major Wyndham project delivers a long-term vision for the reserve and comes after two years of construction,” Cr Maynard said. “I’m proud council has delivered this exciting redevelopment for the Hoppers Crossing community.” The project was supported by the Victorian government through a $1.8 million grant. Cr Maynard said the reserve was a terrific place for residents from all walks of life to exercise and gather with family and friends. “There’s a children’s playground, barbecue facilities and walking paths for people of all age groups to enjoy a stroll,” he said. “In addition, the two pavilions can be used by any group in the community .” Local sports clubs and Wyndham council will host a community event with fun activities at the reserve on October 24 from 4-6pm. If you’re good with people, consider attention to detail as one of your strengths and enjoy helping others, you might make a great justice of the peace. What is a justice of the peace? Justice of the peace (JP) volunteers are a vital part of our justice system. In Victoria, JPs have the power to witness many legal documents, including statutory declarations and affidavits, and to certify true copies of documents and a person’s identity. These documents can be required for a wide array of personal situations – in one appointment, a JP could be sitting alongside an excited couple signing the contract to buy their first home; in the next they could be witnessing a statement that will be rushed off to court immediately, or certifying visa documents with new Australians. “I enjoy it. Justices of the peace offer an important service and it’s a great way for me to give back to the community. This work can be done from an office in an official document signing station (DSS), or from your own workplace or home, without major disruption to your day. JPs make themselves available to the public and stakeholders on a regular basis and the workload and times available can be flexible. Typically, members of the community requiring your services will book an appointment and then come to you. Most appointments take just a few minutes. There are DSS’s right across Victoria. DSS’s operate out of local sites such as police stations, libraries, community hubs and more and members of the public attend to have their documents certified. All JPs who would like to volunteer on DSS’s are warmly welcomed. This is a great way to be part of the life of the community. What qualifications will I need? There are no specific qualifications required to become a justice of the peace in Victoria. However, to be eligible for appointment as a JP, applicants must: • be of or over the age of 18 years • not be an insolvent under administration. • be an Australian citizen Applicants must also satisfy the Attorney-General that they: • have satisfactorily completed the course of training prescribed for appointment as a JP. • have sufficient proficiency in the English language to

perform the duties of a JP. • ordinarily reside in Victoria. • are a fit and proper person to be appointed as a JP.

What kind of people make great JPs? While this is an administrative role, you will be working face-to-face with people and not every appointment is always straight forward. Wyndham council will partner with community organisations in a bid to raise awareness about the effects of gambling. The council will be running workshops, a film screening and open discussion throughout Gambling Harm Awareness Week, October 7-13. What’s your connection to Wyndham? My family and I Iive in Wyndham and I also currently work in Wyndham. How long have you lived in the area? 41 years. I was born in Werribee. What are you passionate about? I am passionate about the conservation of our natural world, and about dogs. It’s even better when my two passions combine.

Tell us briefly how you became involved with the zoo and what your role involves. I started at Zoo Victoria as a veterinary nurse and moved to keeping due to my love of animal training. My current role involves training Maremma guardian dogs to protect threatened Eastern barred bandicoots in the wild. What’s the best part of your role? The opportunity to be involved in the recovery of a species currently extinct in the wild and, of course, to have dogs as my work colleagues.

A bed-ridden ex-serviceman has written from a hospital in Kalgoorlie in an effort to contact old army mates in the Werribee district. He worked for Carter Brothers before the war and was in the Militia, then enlisted in the AIF when war broke out.

The need for a 24-hour emergency facility in Werribee was brought home again after a Werribee man died on his way to hospital last Thursday. The Werribee man, who was in his 40s, died after suffering a severe asthma attack at about 3.55pm on Melbourne Show Day.

Young Point Cook basketball prodigy Paul Tsapatolis can reflect fondly on his 2019 season. The cherry on the top for Tsapatolis was playing a key role in the Australian under-17 team’s run to the Oceania title. Australia’s next generation produced a whitewash at the Oceania championships in New Caledonia, winning all three group games, thrashing Tahiti in the semi-final and running away with an 85-56 win over arch-rivals New Zealand in the final. For Tsapatolis, the capture of the Oceania title was a new milestone in his young career. “I’ve never been to an Oceania championships before, so whenever you win your first medal in something new and representing your country in something meaningful, it’s something you won’t forget for the rest of your life,” he said. Beating New Zealand in the final was special for Tsapatolis. Of course, there is the time-honoured Trans-Tasman rivalry between the two nations. The battle with New Zealand also brought the best out of the Australian team during the whole tournament. “We knew before the tournament that we’d most likely be playing New Zealand in the

final,” Tsapatolis said. “Our mindset going into every game was we’re playing New Zealand and we need to be playing at our best. “That’s why we played so hard all tournament.” Tsapatolis is one of Australia’s top emerging young bigs. The 17-year-old capped a big tournament with selection in the All Star Five team of the tournament. The centre/forward was lethal inside the paint, averaging 12 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game. “That was an amazing honour,” he said. “Making that All Star Five and knowing that I’m the best in my position in Oceania is pretty unreal.” It was a well-rounded tournament that got Tsapatolis the All Star Five nod. His impact at the defensive end was just as crucial, averaging 2.8 steals and 1.2 blocks per game. “We had our meeting and I said I’m going to bring hustle, rebounding, hard defence and I’ll attack when it’s my opportunity on offence,” he said. “Be a team player, a team defender and do all the little things that turn into big things.

“My job was to rebound, set good screens and be a rim protector. “If I had a 20 point game, great, if I didn’t, who cares, as long as we got the win and came out champions.” Tsapatolis and his teammates will be on the radar for future Australian teams. A number of current Australian Boomers went through the same pathway that he is taking. “We always had meetings about how Matthew Dellavedova, Patty Mills, Joe Ingles, all those boys were in that position that we were,” Tsapatolis said. “We’re on the same path as them, so we’re all excited to see what our future holds.” Tsapatolis is in his off season now, but he will continue to work in the gym to get fitter and stronger. He is currently weighing up offers from NBL 1 clubs for 2020 and his long term goal of earning a contract in EuroLeague is on track. But Tsapatolis will take it a year at a time and continue to reassess. “I always look at it at the start of the year and work out what is the plan for this year,” he said. Lance Jenkinson

Midfielder lands the trophy By Lance Jenkinson Werribee onballer Tom Gribble has “conflicted feelings” about the 2019 Victorian Football League season. On a personal level, Gribble soared to great heights, taking out the competition’s JJ Liston Medal for best and fairest and claiming the club champion Bruce Montgomery Trophy last Wednesday night. In a team sense, Gribble was left unfulfilled, believing his side’s best would have been good enough to give premiers Richmond a real shake on grand final day. For that reason, Gribble will be left with a sour taste over summer, despite the incredible strides he has taken as a player and the outstanding season Werribee had outside of its premature finals exit. “Individual accolades are nice, but it’s hard to dismiss the fact that we lost to Essendon in a semi-final by three points when we were probably the better team,” he said. “Ultimately I’m still not satisfied and there’s a hollow feeling to it.” Gribble is self-confessed obsessed about the VFL. The 24-year-old watches as many games as he can and studies his opponents closely. After Werribee’s narrow loss to Essendon, Gribble told himself that he would not watch the game back. A week later, he was watching the game back and re-living a day he would rather forget. “I love the VFL comp, I love what it brings,” he said. “I get bagged out a little bit by the boys because I study it quite a bit. “I told myself after the semi-final that I wouldn’t watch the replay of that game, but I watched the last quarter the following week. “It didn’t sit nicely with me and I was pretty emotional watching it. “It allows you to move on now and it definitely makes that fire burn a little bit harder.” After a sensational season, Gribble is hellbent on building a sustainable reputation as one of the best players in the VFL. Gribble entered this season as a dependable, hard working Werribee midfielder, but the word damaging had not been associated with him. In 2019, Gribble turned it up a notch, not only playing with consistency, but starting to hurt the opposition by making every possession count.

“I’ve added certain elements to my game,” he said. “Being more damaging with the ball, when to kick, when to handball and getting a better mix with that. “Using the ball more effectively by foot. “I’m starting to hit my prime now, so hopefully I can keep improving and it’s not just a flash-in-the-pan type of year.” Gribble’s big season coincided with the arrival of new coach Mark Williams. Williams immediately put Gribble on notice, revealing his round one team weeks out from the season with Gribble’s name left off. It was a reminder to those not on the list that they have some work to do to get into Williams’ plans. Gribble took note and worked hard on his deficiencies to make the round one team and what followed was his best season yet. “I’ve taken massive steps under Choco and I can’t thank him enough,” Gribble said. “Choco clearly outlined some areas that I needed to improve on, because we’re not all perfect, and I really worked hard on them. “I think because he positively reinforces so much, if he’s seen improvements, he’ll let you know. “It’s good to know that when you’re working on your game, those improvements are being noticed and the work you’re putting in is being rewarded.” Gribble won the Werribee best-and-fairest with 67 votes, just two votes clear of onballer Dom Brew (65) with defender Nick Coughlan (61) six back. It was a tight vote count across the board and it showed that Werribee was not reliant on a handful of individuals. “The leaderboard does suggest we’re not a top end group and we don’t rely on any one or two players,” Gribble said. “It certainly shows there’s a consistency and everyone is understanding of their roles. It has been a great year right across the group.” Gribble believes Werribee is on the path to something big next season. He looks at 2019 as a stepping stone on the path to the ultimate glory. “The foundations are there,” he said. “I think one year into the system with a new coach, maybe it was a bit premature to win a flag, but the second year you should really be starting to attack it and know what’s required and what the understanding is amongst the group and the coaches.”

Hoppers Crossing came back from a 13-point quarter-time deficit to beat local rivals Werribee Districts by 19 points. Bilal Chehade led the way for the Warriors with three goals, while Ezzat Haddara added two. The Warriors qualified for the finals in second place behind Altona. Hoppers Crossing 9.11 (65) d Werribee Districts 7.4 (46)

U18 division 2 – Scintillating Spotty

Spotswood flew out of the blocks to lead Point Cook by 30 points at quarter-time – a margin that was replicated at full-time. Darcy Cullen was best-on-ground for the Woodsmen, while Abdul El Houli was dangerous in attack with five goals. The Woodsmen beat Point Cook twice in the finals to underline their supremacy. Spotswood 14.9 (93) d Point Cook 9.9 (63)

U18 girls – Spotswood repeat

Spotswood made it back-to-back premierships with a hard-fought 23-point win over Werribee Districts. Isabella Grant stamped her authority on the match, while Jasmine Goodman (four) and Manaia Huta (three) combined for seven goals. Coupled with the Wolves’ premiership in senior women’s, Spotswood is leading the way in female football. Spotswood 8.2 (50) d Werribee Districts 4.3 (27)

U16 division 1 – Bulldogs bite

Point Cook overcame an 11-point half-time deficit to storm to a 10-point victory over Caroline Springs. Bol Wol was named best for the Bulldogs, while Lachlan Mellon and Tate Wood snared two goals apiece. The Bulldogs only lost one game for the year, by three points against Caroline Springs in the semi-final. Point Cook 7.13 (55) d Caroline Springs 6.9 (45)

U16 division 2 – Eagles do it easy

Yarraville Seddon left nothing to chance in the big one, belting Point Cook Centrals by 68 points. Hamish Creswick claimed best-on-field honours for the Eagles, while Sebastian Turnbull led the way in attack with four goals. The Eagles were a dominant team all season, only losing one game. U16 division 3 – Centrals dominate

Werribee Centrals had a runaway 69-point win over Tarneit to complete the perfect season. Max Logan, the competition’s leading goalkicker, starred in the grand final with four goals, while Jye Davis was also prominent. The Centrals went through the season undefeated. Werribee Centrals 15.13 (103) d Tarneit 4.10 (34)

U15 girls division 1 – Lakers cruise home

Caroline Springs was in command from start to finish in a 26-point win over Spotswood. The Lakers defence was incredible, holding Spotty goalless in the first half, while Jacinta Kondis and Charlize Sindoni kicked two goals apiece. Consecutive wins over Spotswood in the finals secured the premiership for the Lakers. Caroline Springs 6.5 (41) d Spotswood 2.3 (15)

U15 girls division 2 – Flemington fightback

Trailing by 16 points at three-quarter time, Flemington Juniors produced an incredible fourth quarter for a come-from-behind three-point win over St Bernard’s. Ashlee Foca-Cunha was the spark for Flemington, kicking three goals in a best-on-ground display. Flemington Juniors 5.6 (36) d St Bernard’s 4.9 (33)

U14 division 2 – Snowdogs barking

Point Cook was far and away the best team of the season and it maintained the rage with a 54-point thrashing of Newport Power in the decider. Giann Cristiano was superb for the Bulldogs on the big day, while Patrick Campanaro, the league’s leading goalkicker, booted two goals. Point Cook 9.9 (63) d Newport Power 1.3 (9)

St Bernard’s put the foot on the accelerator in the second half to run out 27-point winners over Flemington Juniors. The basis of the Snowdogs victory was its tough defence, which kept Juniors to just one goal, while best-on-ground Josh ten Dam kicked three goals. The Snowdogs were one of four teams that entered the finals with a 9-5 record, but the only team to have a flawless finals record. St Bernard’s 5.7 (37) d Flemington Juniors 1.4 (10)

U14 division 3 – Warriors undefeated

After four see-sawing quarters, Hoppers Crossing emerged with a gritty 17-point win over West Footscray. Taj Danaher, who kicked two goals, was named best for the Warriors, while Callum Dansey also added two. The Warriors finished the season with a perfect record, winning all 15 games. U14 division 4 – Awesome Hoppers

Hoppers Crossing put together a stellar game to power to a double-your-score 29-point win over Altona. Brodie Thomson was best-afield for the Warriors, while Corey Roberts, Lachlann-Joel Roberts and Jack Carlile kicked two majors each. The Warriors won all four games played between the clubs in 2019.
