Journey of ‘Mighty Owen’ By Esther Lauaki The adventures of a little Point Cook battler are going global. Eight-year-old Owen entered the world much earlier than planned, at 32 weeks and weighing only 880 grams. He was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and autism shortly after. The youngster is now the star of a children’s book called The Adventures of Mighty Owen which aims to make hospital visits and therapy sessions a little less daunting for children. Mum Emma Roehrs recently released the book with illustrations by Owen and words

contributed by his older brother Liam. Ms Roehrs said Owen found a talent for drawing and writing while in hospital waiting rooms and during therapy sessions. She said he used art to process his emotions and cope with his physical therapy. “It has been a very scary, emotional and tough ride on the entire family with countless ongoing doctors and therapists appointments,” Ms Roehrs says. “He spent 103 days in hospital [at birth] and I didn’t get my first cuddle with Owen until he was well enough to be moved at three weeks and two days old.” The book shares the story of Mighty Owen

and Lord Angry Pants as they navigate therapy sessions, hospital appointments and life with cerebral palsy and autism. “These are things rarely covered in children’s literature and certainly not from someone who is directly experiencing it,” Ms Roehrs said. She said she hoped the book would help others understand the world through the eyes of someone with a disability. “This story was written as a way for our family, especially for Liam who is two years older than Owen, to understand his little brother. “Writing this story of Mighty Owen is also

helping Owen to understand the journey he is on. In the process we have discovered a way to manage and handle Owen’s autism, including his anger outbursts. “Through this process, Owen has learned just how special he is … while not all children are the same, they are all mighty. “He has fought and continues to fight, to be the bravest Mighty Owen who we all love and adore.” She said the book would be a resource for parents, therapists, schools, siblings and “that mighty child in your life”. Train cancellations slammed By Alesha Capone The state opposition has criticised the performance of Melbourne’s train network, as figures reveal 90 trains were cancelled on the Werribee line during August. This compares to 61 cancellations during August last year. The figures, from Public Transport Victoria (PTV), also show that on the Werribee line last month: • 89 trains ran short (compared to 68 in August last year). Running short means the train did

not depart from its scheduled origin, arrive at its scheduled destination or was replaced by an alternative mode of transport. • 33 trains bypassed scheduled stops on the City Loop (compared to 31 in August last year). • 4809 trains were on time (compared to 5059 in August last year). Overall, there were 937 trains cancelled across the Metro Melbourne network in August. The Werribee line logged the fourth-highest rate of cancellations, behind the Frankston (134 cancellations), Pakenham (102 cancellations)

and Craigieburn (98 cancellations) lines. The Shadow Minister for Public Transport (Metropolitan), David Davis, said that “commuters shouldn’t be left standing on a station with their train a no show”. “Passengers expect reliable, safe and punctual train services,” he said. “Cancelling services or bypassing or skipping stations leaves passengers justifiably frustrated and angry.” Train operator Metro released a statement which said that in August, track and signalling upgrades, bridge maintenance, and graffiti

removal works were carried out across the network, including on the Cranbourne/ Pakenham, Sandringham, Werribee/ Williamstown and Mernda lines. “Significant power upgrades and maintenance also saw replacement buses running on all or part of the Werribee, Williamstown, Sunbury, Craigieburn and Upfield lines, with no trains running through the City Loop,” the statement said. There were also 281 incidents related to trespassing and police operations on the Melbourne train network.

Point Cook performer Laydee Bombay will take to the stage as a seductive siren during The Australian Burlesque Festival. This year is the 10th anniversary of the festival, which will include four performances at the Wonderland Spiegeltent in Federation Square this week and a month-long national tour. Ms Bombay said she became involved in burlesque about nine years ago, while looking for something fun and creative to do. “I’m just a standard, everyday person and saw a flyer that said ‘Learn burlesque’,” she said. “I gave it a go and thought, ‘This is fun, I can do this’.” She said that of the many genres of burlesque, she enjoys the neo-burlesque style, which is a modern take on the art. Ms Bombay said that although she does a lot of comedy-based performances, she would be changing up her act for The Australian Burlesque Festival. “I’m leaning more towards a classic burlesque routine with fans and an ornate costume, it’s more of a seductive, siren-type role and character,” she said. “I like the idea of projecting your five minutes of fantasy onstage, for people to escape in – you’re creating that five-minute escape and for that time, they’re totally immersed in your world.” The Australian Burlesque Festival’s Melbourne shows will be held between Thursday, September 26 and Sunday, September 29. An expressions of interest campaign has been launched for the sale of the Truganina Central Shopping Centre development site. The 2.2 hectare site, on Woods Road, has a permit for a retail centre development of up to 8000 square metres including a Coles supermarket, a Liquorland and a range of specialty shops. Developer ID_Land has launched the expressions of interest process, with CBRE appointed to conduct the campaign. A press release about the EOI process said that the Truganina Central Shopping Centre, once constructed, would “cater to significant forecast population growth in the immediate area, with Truganina emerging as one of Victoria’s fastest growing suburbs underpinned by a range of surrounding developments from groups such as Stockland and Villawood”. CBRE’s Justin Dowers said Coles had pre-committed to a 15-year lease at the Truganina site. “The mixed use and residential development potential of the surrounding land will be highly beneficial for supermarket trade, and the presence of Coles will also enhance the appeal of the residential product to be developed on the balance of the estate,” he said. “There has been growing buyer demand for this style of product,” Mr Dowers said. ID_Land is building the Elements estate in Truganina, which will comprise about 1600 residential lots.

Police have arrested a 38-year-old Werribee man following a series of incidents in Christmas Hills and Yarra Glen. The man allegedly committed burglaries in the area, and stole a Lexus and a Hilux. Aldi to unveil Tarneit makeover By Esther Lauaki Tarneit ALDI shoppers are in for a treat once a major store upgrade is complete. The store will close temporarily between October 2 and 16 for construction. The new-look ALDI, at Wyndham Shopping Centre, will include better product displays, improved navigation and modern styling. An ALDI Australia spokesman said many of the improvements had been implemented following extensive store trials and a statewide

rollout of the modern store design in South Australia and Western Australia. “While we’re delighted to be introducing these innovations, we want our customers to know they won’t lead to higher prices,” he said. “Low prices are a big deal for ALDI … This is

Fabric is a real corker A pair of unique dresses, made of fabric which comes from tree bark, will be on show at this year’s Fashion Awards Australia in Hoppers Crossing. Fashion designers Minh Nguyen and William Thi, who live in St Albans, made the garments in just two days. The material used is called cork fabric, which is made from the bark of the cork oak tree. Mr Nguyen and Mr Thi both took part in last year’s awards. They said awards director Heather Marcus asked them to create the dresses this year in order to show the versatility of cork fabric, which was supplied by awards sponsor Birch Creative. “I think for me, because of the leopard print, I wanted to do something tribal,” Mr Nguyen said. Mr Thi said: “For me, personally I love working with unconventional fabrics.” Both men, who have their own individual fashion labels – MINDUC and William Thi –

said they would also be entering other garments in this year’s fashion awards. “I placed third in racewear last year, so I’m itching to see if I can improve this year,” Mr Thi said. “I’m graduating this year and I definitely pushed my limits and created some really great gowns, and I’m looking forward to celebrating on the night with my friends who will be there,” Mr Nguyen said. Ballan Road land up for grabs By Alesha Capone A large parcel of land in Quandong, which has been in the one family for almost 50 years, is being offered for sale. Located at 1199 Ballan Road, the 57.1 hectares (140 acres) of rural land was originally purchased by the family for $38,000 about five decades ago. If sold to a developer, the land could potentially be used for residential subdivision, pending approval from the relevant authorities. The land is being sold through Tsimos Commercial Real Estate, which is based in Cheltenham, in Melbourneâ€™s south-east.

The asking price is subject to application, and has not been publicly released. According to the 2016 census, there were

210 residents and 88 dwellings in the Mount Cottrell-Quandong area. To help guide future development of the area, Wyndham council has developed a draft Quandong Precinct Structure Plan (PSP) in consultation with the Victorian Planning Authority. The draft PSP, which is being exhibited for public feedback, applies to 153 hectares of land generally bound by Ballan Road to the north east, Manor Lakes to the south east and the Outer Metropolitan Ring (E6 Transport Corridor) to the west. The draft PSP states about 1063 new homes are expected to be needed across the area. The draft PSP also includes plans for:

â€˘ The Aboriginal cultural heritage of the area to be celebrated through a waterway interpretive trail. â€˘ The areaâ€™s more recent farming heritage to be preserved through the retention of dry stone walls along Ballan Road. â€˘ A conservation reserve to be created in the south-east portion of the precinct. â€˘ That the precinct will connect to Ballan Road, and the neighbourhoods of the Westbrook PSP in the north and Manor Lakes PSP in the south, via a central connector road with off-road bicycle path. Maths adds up to fun Pupils at St James the Apostle Primary School can count on having a lot of fun while learning. The Hoppers Crossing school recently hosted a Maths Party Night, which celebrated all things numerical and STEM-related. The schoolâ€™s mathematics leader John Hein said the annual event has been running for about 10 years. Mr Hein said that about 300 people, including 100 families, attended the Maths Party Night, which included a variety of competitions and activities for children. He said this included a Maths of the Year game, with every month featuring a different type of mathematics activity. Mr Hein said the students also enjoyed cooking pizzas to study fractions and programming Edison robots. In the lead-up to the Maths Party, pupils

created promotional posters to hang around the school, with one winner being announced at each year level between prep to grade 6. The winners received a â€˜Maths of the Yearâ€™ T-shirt. Mr Hein said that the school placed a big emphasis on â€œvisible learningâ€? and helping children enjoy maths. â€œMaths is OK, itâ€™s not scary, we work together and we problem-solve,â€? he said. Wombat’s Wish heads to Wyndham

You Yangs tourism plan By Esther Lauaki Parks Victoria is exploring options to revitalise You Yangs Regional Park and Serendip Sanctuary and it wants your help. The two sites help protect and conserve important Aboriginal cultural values and wildlife and Parks Victoria is looking for new options to boost nature-based visitation and tourism to the area. Western Basalt district manager Paul Wallace said with the support of Regional

Development Victoria consultants, Parks Victoria was focused on increasing visitation, improving the visitor experience, and generating opportunities for businesses in the Lara and Little River communities. “You Yangs Regional Park is a much-loved spot for visitors and groups, and an important green space for the surrounding communities,” Mr Wallace said. “This project will explore options to revitalise the regional park and Serendip Sanctuary, and create an economic assessment

for potential future funding.” Mr Wallace said the organisation was committed to protecting these values. He said the You Yangs were significant for the Wadawurrung people who were key partners in the project. The regional park also provides important habitat for more than 200 species of birds, native animals, and a variety of plant species. Public drop-in sessions will be held on October 10 at Little River Mechanic’s Institute Hall between 4.30pm and 6.30pm and October 12 at Lara Hall between 10.30am and 12.30pm.

Geelong-based not-for-profit organisation Wombat’s Wish, which supports children who have experienced the death of a parent, will expand its services into Wyndham this year. Wombat’s Wish is named in the tradition of the UK not-for-profit organisation Winston’s Wish, and assists children dealing with loss and grief. Program co-ordinator Guy Mitchell said Wombat’s Wish has been operating for 13 years, and has supported hundreds of children in that time, predominately youngsters from Geelong and the Surf Coast. Every year, Wombat’s Wish also runs two camps for up to 40 children. This year, for the first time, it will run the Wombat’s Wish Wyndham Camp from October 25–27 in Anglesea. The organisation is currently accepting referrals of children from Wyndham, for the camp. “Moving into western Melbourne has long been a goal of the organisation and we are very pleased to now do so with a camp dedicated for the Wyndham region,” Mr Mitchell said. The University of Melbourne’s U-Vet Werribee Animal Hospital is set to embark on a milestone trial involving a drug which may help dogs, and even humans, suffering from cancer. U-Vet has teamed up with oncology company PharmAust for the trial, to test how effective the drug monepantel – in tablet form – is at treating B cell lymphoma in dogs. Head of U-Vet’s small animal medicine and oncology service, Dr Claire Cannon, who is also a registered specialist in veterinary oncology, said the hospital would recruit up to 27 dogs to take part in the trial. “We are ready to start the trial now, as soon as the first dog is enrolled, and it will run until we have enrolled all the dogs,” she said. Dr Cannon said that while monepantel is safe for dogs in general, and there is some indication that it can be effective in treating B cell lymphoma, the trial was aiming to treat a bigger number of dogs with a standardised dose to determine its effectiveness in fighting cancer and possible side effects. “It is a milestone in that it is the first formal trial of this drug in dogs with cancer, absolutely, and will pave the way for future studies of this drug in dogs as well as potentially other animals and people with cancer,” Dr Cannon said. “Many of the cancers we treat in dogs and cats are very similar to the types of cancer people get, and these tend to react to new drugs in a way that is much more likely to be what happens in people, compared to laboratory animals. “So as well as having the potential to benefit dogs with cancer, this sort of research could actually lead to progress in treating cancer in people as well.”

This past week, I was truly thankful to be involved in some great events and occasions across our city, which kicked off with a special citizenship ceremony held on Tuesday 17 September, celebrating Australian Citizenship Day. This was also my last citizenship ceremony that I will confer for my Mayoral term. It has been an absolute honour to officiate these ceremonies and I have really loved the opportunity to meet with so many local residents, that are so joyful in finally reaching this special milestone.

Pupil’s future is green A group of pupils from Westbourne Grammar School in Truganina have been recognised for their conservation credentials. Grade 5 pupils Marley, Nikita, Kai and Sebastian have won a place in the national finals of the Future Problem Solving Program (FPSP), to be held in Queensland next month. Westbourne’s head of Junior School, Paul Barklamb, said the program aimed to empower students to make a difference in helping to resolve “real world” problems. Mr Barklamb said that Marley, Nikita, Kai and Sebastian were one of only four teams in their age division to be invited to present at the FPSP national finals. He said the foursome had started an initiative named The Green Tree

Project looking at deforestation, which has included educating their fellow pupils on the issue. “To this end, they took a session with the prep classes, before assisting them in planting tree saplings around the school site,” he said. “The preps loved doing this under the guidance of the year 5 team and we feel they now have a good appreciation of why trees are so important to the environment.” Earlier this year, a team from Westbourne’s Junior School placed third in a different category of the FPSP international finals, with a project focused on food waste. I also had the pleasure of attending the eighth annual Barry Jones Oration event, which aims to raise greater awareness of social, educational, economic and environmental issues in Wyndham. This years guest speaker, Professor Gillian Triggs was the President of the Australian Human Rights Commission from 2012-2017 and has recently appointed by the UN Secretary General as Assistant High Commissioner Protection. I really love this event and believe that it’s an initiative that has the capacity to activate innovative thinking and robust and healthy debate. With the school holiday’s now in full swing it’s time to get your teenagers busy. We are so fortunate in Wyndham to have such a great range of youth programs and events across the municipality, especially during the holiday periods. Youth Service’s Holiday Action program runs daily from the Youth Resource Centre (YRC) and hosts a huge range of activities and excursions throughout the school break to amazing places including laser tag, sea kayaking, the movies and the Melbourne Show, this program is aimed at 12-15 years and requires a completed enrolment form to attend and fees do apply. The YRC is located on Derrimut Rod, Hoppers Crossing, with shuttle buses available for young people in other suburbs to access the program. The libraries once again continue to offer a huge range of activities over the holidays for children and families including kids yoga, junk craft, midday movies, science workshops, kids origami puppets, plus heaps more. The building works are progressing well and is on track for a February 2020 competition.

The new Paediatrics and Special Care Nursery has opened its doors at Werribee Mercy Hospital. Clinical director Dr Kathy McMahon said the newly renovated surgical ward has 12 beds. She said the ward was staffed by 13 paediatricians, 10 junior medical staff and 26 nursing staff on rotation. “At any one time there is between three doctors overseeing the ward and four nursing staff,” she said. “The ward’s main ‘business’ is common general paediatric issues such as asthma,

locally would lead to a need for the ward to be expanded in the long term. “Not only will there be a need for a paediatric ward but also for a paediatric emergency department and an expanded special care nursery,” she said. “It is important that families in our community have the same access to services as they have elsewhere in Victoria, and this will only occur with financial commitment from the state government to infrastructure and operational funding. “We should all be about giving the best, safest care for our community locally, and that will involve expansion in the future.”

She said his next dream was to compete on the world stage.

Discipline and hard work paid off for a Point Cook taekwondo team. A sparring team of 15 students from Martial Fitness Australia snatched a haul of medals when it represented Victoria in the National Taekwondo Championships at the Gold Coast earlier this month. Lead by coach Master Allan Malachowski, the team returned with four gold, one silver and three bronze medals. Adele Elsley, whose 14-year-old son Ryan competed, said the team’s motivation and dedication was commendable. “It’s a credit to the athletes on how much time and effort they put in and the very long hours they spend training,” Ms Elsley said. “These kids were training six days a week to ensure that they were prepared and in peak condition, both mentally and physically.

Angry birds mapped in Wyndham By Alesha Capone More than 25 swooping magpies have been reported in Wyndham so far this year. The magpiealert.com website, also known as Australia’s Magpie Swooping Map, has received several reports from residents who have been targeted by the birds. The reports include six swoopings in Point Cook, four in Tarneit and three each in Truganina, Werribee and Hoppers Crossing. Two attacks were reported in Middleton

Drive, Point Cook, both upon cyclists this month. One of the cyclists posted that he was “viciously attacked at least a dozen times” and that the magpie followed him for a block. A “psycho magpie” which “clawed” a cyclist’s

back was also reported on Davis Road, Tarneit. Another bicycle rider wrote that he encountered a magpie on the Federation Trail, near Tariff Court, Werribee, on September 14. He said the bird drew blood on his neck and, “It also pooped on my jersey”. The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning’s program manager of environmental compliance Suriya Vine said bird swooping was part of life in Australia. “Swooping occurs every year during breeding season and is largely a defensive manoeuvre

carried out by some male birds when we come within close range of eggs or fledgling birds,” Ms Vine said. Ms Vine said it was best to avoid spots where magpies swooped. “If you do end up in an area where there is a swooping bird, try to protect your head and eyes and move quickly through the area,” she said. “It is up to us to co-exist peacefully with wildlife and respect it.”

Pet blitz cheap as chips PETstock stores across the west will participate in a national microchipping initiative next month. The annual Microchip Blitz will involve PETstock providing a $10 microchipping service. The Microchip Blitz, run by PETstock’s charity foundation PETstock Assist, began four years ago in an effort to reduce the number of lost animals who need to be rehomed or euthanised if their owners cannot be found. According to Animals Australia, an estimated 200,000 pets are euthanised at pounds across the country every year. PETstock Assist charity and events co-ordinator Jess Guilfoyle said microchipping was mandatory in most states. “However, thousands of pets still remain non-microchipped despite the introduction of new laws,” she said. “Whether due to the usual cost of microchipping, lack of awareness on the laws,

or owners not understanding how crucial microchips are to the safe return of lost pets.” Pet owners must make a booking at their local PETstock store in order to participate in the Microchip Blitz. Owners can bring in dogs, cats and small animals including rabbits and guinea pigs. But horses, livestock, birds and reptiles will not be eligible. Developers buy big in Wyndham By Alesha Capone Industrial land in Tarneit and Truganina is continuing to attract top dollar from investors and developers. Developer 7Nine Investments sold two neighbouring Truganina industrial properties, at 19 and 21 Efficient Drive, for $3.5 million earlier this month. CBRE, which managed the sale, released a statement which said 19 Efficient Drive features a 1214 square metre building situated on 1849

square metres of land, while 21 Efficient Drive includes a 1382 square metre building situated on 2300 square metres of land. Ricardo Cappelletti from CBRE said: “The purchaser was a Sydney-based investor who recognises the potential for capital growth within the industrial hub of Truganina and has purchased three buildings in the suburb over the past 18 months.” Also this month, fund manager ISPT paid $23.1 million for a 40-hectare site at 744 Boundary Road, Truganina.

Just down the road, but in a different suburb, Frasers Property Australia purchased a 43-hectare industrial land parcel, paying $27.5 million for 917 Boundary Road, Tarneit. According to the Australian Financial Review, the site was previously purchased by Review Canemoon Investments for $333,721 during 2008. Frasers Property Australia’s general manager – southern region commercial and industrial, Anthony Maugeri, said the company was “replenishing our depleted stock in key markets

across Melbourne where land values, rents and investment demand is increasing”. “The well-located Tarneit property further extends our reach in Melbourne’s largest industrial market, where we have held a strong market presence for over 20 years,” he said. “During that time, we have developed over $1.1 billion dollars’ worth of industrial warehousing.” A statement from Frasers Property Australia said they hoped to build 150,000 square metres of industrial buildings at 917 Boundary Road.

Girls from schools around Victoria and New South Wales attended the It Takes a Spark Conference earlier this month to connect with industry role models, innovators and universities for a day of interactive workshops. Good call for local tennis By Alesha Capone Point Cook’s Liz Ross says tennis has brought both friendship and love into her life. Ms Ross has been a line umpire for four years and a court supervisor for three years –this year she started training as a referee and lines coach. She has been selected as one of three finalists in this year’s Victorian Tennis Awards ‘Excellence in Officiating’ category, along with her friends Phillip Goodman, of Mill Park, and Ken Young, of Lyndhurst. Ms Ross said she was “very pleased” that the club she plays for, the Royal Park Tennis Club, is also a finalist in the Most Outstanding Club or Centre category. Ms Ross said she played netball while at school, but gave tennis a go at the suggestion of a friend. “We actually won the grand final in my first season, so after that I was hooked,” Ms Ross said. “As my netball career came to an end I was very thankful to have tennis to continue from a fitness/sport perspective. “I have made so many tennis friends over the years and I actually met my husband through tennis and my club.” Ms Ross said she enjoyed several aspects of her role as a tennis official. “I enjoy being part of a team and specifically with lines, the excitement you get from being accurate and loud when needed,” she said. “The people you get to work with make it very special too.” Tennis Victoria will announce the award winners on October 18. Roundabout complete in Laverton North A new roundabout has been built in Gordon Luck Avenue, Laverton North as part of the state government’s $1.8 billion Western Roads Upgrade. The roundabout was installed during work on Dohertys Road, which is being widened to two lanes in each direction. Construction started on the Gordon Luck Avenue roundabout in November last year, with more than 50 workers clocking up almost 2000 hours of construction to complete the project. Major Road Projects Authority project director Frank De Santis said that workers had also recently completed new west-bound lanes on Dohertys Road between Gordon Luck Avenue and Grieve Parade, measuring almost 800 metres in length. “We’ll now rehabilitate existing lanes and begin upgrading Dohertys Road towards Fitzgerald Road,” Mr De Santis said. New lanes will be constructed along four kilometres of Dohertys Road, towards Fitzgerald Road. More 24,000 drivers use Dohertys Road every day. The Western Roads Upgrade is being delivered by Major Road Projects Victoria and project consortium Netflow. It is part of the state government’s $4 billion Suburban Roads Upgrade.

I’ve been going for the Western Bulldogs since 1965. I arrived in Australia in 1964, from Greece. I started work with my brother Tom, he was an Essendon supporter. I arrived on the Friday and he took me to the football in Essendon on the Monday. I didn’t really like it, because in my country we played soccer. Then a couple of years went past, and E.J. ‘Teddy’ Whitten, who was good friends with my brother, would come into the shop where we worked. He came into the kitchen and said to me, ‘You barrack for the Bulldogs?’ Also, the plastic strips hanging in the door were red, white and blue, Bulldogs colours, so he said: ‘You have to go for the Bulldogs’. But I didn’t know who they were. Then he (Teddy) and his soon took me to a couple of games, and from then on I started barracking for the Bulldogs and I never miss a game. He would take me to sit where the coaches sat. I’ve gone interstate for games and got to know a lot of the coaches and assistant coaches. Has Werribee changed a lot since you first moved here? Manuel: The area has changed a lot. It’s grown in everything, more houses and it’s more populated, which is a good thing. I’d never change this place, I love it. Even if I won $10 million, I’d stay here in Werribee. It’s open, you can see the sun, not buildings everywhere. Mary: We love our little house, we’re very comfortable here. And you also ran a fish and chip shop for many years?

Manuel: I did the job for nearly 50 years and I’m retired now. Our first shop was in Millers Road, Altona North. We had shops in Harrington Square in Altona, one in Kookaburra Avenue in Werribee and Woodville Park. I hear you’re good with chickens. Manuel: I have nine chickens, I have had them for about five years. I had them more for the grandchildren at the start, but I have them for

eggs now. The chickens follow me around and my family calls them my girlfriends. I’m always out the back working in the garden. I’ve put in tomatoes, chillies and cucumbers.

Mary and I met each other at the Fitzroy Town Hall. I said to her, ‘I want to marry you’. I looked younger then and she said, ‘You’re a bit too young to marry me’.

How long have you been married?

Where do you like to get coffee?

Manuel: We have been married for 51 years, we have three kids and four grandsons. Our daughter Linda is the only one who goes for the Bulldogs though.

Manuel: We always go to the plaza and have a coffee at Jamaica Blue. Mary: It’s the best coffee we’ve found in the area.

A unique feature of the new special school for mentally retarded at Hoppers Crossing will be the ability of the general public to share its facilities after hours. It is the first time a special development school has been designed for use by the community as well as the 48 handicapped people who will attend during normal hours.

If anyone dared to venture into the Safeway supermarket, last week, they would have found themselves engulfed in a sea of teddy bears. Because Thursday was the day the teddy bear’s had their picnic.

Furious local environmental groups will formally oppose any moves to build a Greg Norman-designed golf course after learning details of the proposed layout last week. The groups have also lashed out at the secrecy surrounding the proposal, describing it as “anti-Australian” – and have called on Wyndham council and community to “make a stand” on the issue.

Werribee has been ranked Melbourne’s best-value suburb for houses under $500,000, but a surge of bargain hunters is pushing prices up. A median house price of $245,000 is value for money in the well-serviced suburb, according to a NAB and RP Data Report, Where to Buy Under $500,000, which placed Werribee top on a list of “best buys” in metropolitan Melbourne’s booming low-end market.

SPORT Seventh heaven for Lions By Lance Jenkinson Deer Park stands alone as the only metropolitan football club in Victoria to win seven straight top-flight premierships. The Lions claimed the incredible record with a jaw-dropping come-from-behind three-point win over highly-fancied Altona in a Western Region Football League division 1 grand final classic at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday. Lions coach Marc Bullen lauded the character of his players after they appeared to be down and out staring a 25-point deficit in the face at half-time. “The records are the records and the accolades are the accolades, but you’ve got to praise the players for what they did today,” Bullen said. “They were down and out, but they were absolutely enormous late in the game. “We got challenged, we got thrown spanners, but at the end of the day we made the right decisions at the right times, went for the jugular and we’ve won a premiership.” Deer Park was more like pussy cats than lions in the first half. The Lions had the game being dictated to them and were getting beaten in the physicality stakes. What they needed was something different and Bullen put in his order at half-time. “We decided to put a special working party together at half-time when we were down by four goals,” he said. “We wanted to change the direction of the game and bring back 1980s footy.” It was not exactly old school ‘bring back the biff’, but it was definitely a brutal ’80s style of physicality shown by Deer Park. Daniel Cooper produced an old fashioned clothes liner early in the third quarter to be the first yellow carded, Chris Stewart had a brain snap and followed him to the bench shortly after and Jack Redpath got his marching orders in the last quarter. Deer Park played two down in the third quarter and one down in the fourth. The Lions got a lift from captain Jack Purton-Smith in the midfield, while roaming tall Scott Greenhough stamped his authority on the game and small forward Spiros Amarantidis sparked to life. Stewart returned to have a major influence, while Kwame McHarg was an ever present. The tone-setter for Deer Park though was Jackson Barling, who made his mark straight out of the half-time break. Barling ran through the centre square looking to collect any Altona player in his way. It changed the tone of the game and gave Deer Park a physical edge. From that moment on, Altona appeared to second guess itself in the contest. Deer Park took over the clearance battle and

Deer Park enjoyed a sustained period of attack for the first 20 minutes of the fourth, but its goals dried up after the Amarantidis major. The Lions kicked four consecutive behinds and you wondered if those misses could prove costly. Altona somehow got up off the canvas to fight until the bitter end. The final 10 minutes saw the ball camped in Altona’s half of the ground, but they could not find an avenue to a match-winning goal. For Altona, this is a result that will churn in the stomach forever more. The Vikings went in as favourites, finished as minor premiers and had beaten Deer Park on all three occasions this season. It was Deer Park’s 11th senior premiership, moving it to fourth on the WRFL division 1 premiers list behind Spotswood (15), Parkside (14) and Braybrook (12).

Byrnes farewells football with yet another premiership Deer Park small forward Shannon Byrnes has called time on his distinguished football career. The two-time AFL premiership player with Geelong signed off after a fourth consecutive flag with Deer Park in the Western Region Football League division 1 on Saturday. Amid the exultation of a thrilling three-point grand final win over Altona at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday, Byrnes was emotional as he was flanked by his family for the last time after playing a game of football. “I had every emotion going through my body that you could imagine,” Byrnes said of his reaction at the final siren. “It was shock, disbelief and happiness that we won and then a tinge of sadness that it’s the end of an unbelievable time in my life. “It’s been a huge day and I’m just so glad we got to come out on top.” To say Byrnes went out on a high would be an understatement. 36 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 25, 2019

The 35-year-old has experienced the thrill of winning two AFL premierships on the MCG, but the victory over Altona might have topped it all. “I was just saying to dad, I don’t think I’ve

ever felt more satisfaction from a win than I did today, at any level,” Byrnes said. “They’d beaten us three times throughout the year, we were the underdogs, we had three players sent off during the game, 100 metres in penalties given against us, kicking against the wind in the last quarter and to still be able to come through with a win, it’s an unbelievable list of things you can go through. “We shouldn’t have won it, but we did. “It doesn’t get any better.” One of the hardest things for an AFL player is the transition from the big league to local football. Byrnes was grateful for the chance to play alongside his mates Marc Bullen and Jason Kennedy, and do it in a successful team. “It’s a perfect way to finish off my career to play in four flags in a row,” Byrnes said. “They’ve been an unbelievable club and they’ve set a metro record [of consecutive premierships] and I’m so glad to have been a

small part of that.” All former AFL players who move back into local football seem to cop their fair share of abuse from people on the other side of the fence and Byrnes was no different. He wanted to thank the Lions fans for the support he received in those times. “The Lions Den supporters have been unbelievable for me,” Byrnes said. “I cop a fair bit over the fence from the opposition supporters and they couldn’t be better in backing me up.” With his partner Megan pregnant with their second child, Byrnes, who celebrated with his two-year-old son after the game, will hang up the boots to spend more time with family. Vikings let one slip By Lance Jenkinson A day that started full of optimism turned into a horror show for Altona. The script could not have been more gut-wrenching for the Vikings in a three-point loss to Deer Park in the Western Region Football League division 1 grand final at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday. Vikings midfielder Steven Kennedy was still shell-shocked long after the final siren sounded on the premiership that got away. “You won’t lose in too many worse ways I don’t think,” he said. “It’s still pretty raw really, a bit of a numb feeling. “That will be one to look back on and rue.” Considering it was Altona’s first grand final since 2012, there were no signs of any early nerves. The Vikings were clearly the dominant side in the first half, dictating the play with their quick ball movement and playing with a physicality befitting of a grand final. At half-time, Altona led by 25 points, the vast majority of its players winning their one-on-one duels and the team seemingly in a commanding position. Even the Vikings fans were getting chirpy to the Deer Park players in their vicinity, sensing their great run of premierships could be coming to an end.

Then came a tough third quarter for Altona. It was one of the most edgy quarters of football seen in the WRFL for a long time. It started with Deer Park defender Jackson Barling running off the back square and taking aim at any Altona player in his zone. Barling felled Kennedy behind the play and that act, like it or not, signalled a change in momentum in the match. Soon after, Daniel Cooper saw a yellow card for a swinging arm and then Chris Stewart was issued one and joined him in the Deer Park sin bin for a brain fade act. While it led to a numerical disadvantage, playing 16 on 18, Deer Park coach Marc Bullen knew his side was cooked if it did not try something different in the third quarter and the injection of an “’80s style” rough and tumble into the game proved successful. It got the intimidation factor back for the Lions and had Altona players second guessing. Kennedy admitted his side went away from what made it play well in the first two quarters. He put it down to the physicality of Deer Park and the fatigue and physical toll on his team that eventually saw them worn down. “Players sort of didn’t take the risks we would normally do [in the second half],” Kennedy said. “We’re a side that likes to move the ball at angles and cut through the middle of the

ground by handball and foot and we just stopped taking it on. “In the third quarter, we had two extra on the ground because they had two sent off and they kicked two or three goals in that period, so it just shows how much we tightened up. “I still can’t believe we actually lost from that position, but it is what it is at the moment.” Leading by 19 points at three-quarter time and kicking with the aid of the wind in the fourth quarter, the odds were still stacked in favour of Altona. It did not take long for Deer Park to stamp its authority on the last quarter though with Spiros Amarantidis goaling inside the first minute and further goals to best-on-ground Jeremy Mills and Amarantidis getting the Lions on level terms. The Vikings were the minor premiers for a second year running, premiers in the reserves and minor premiers in the under 18s. “We’re doing something right as a club, but we just haven’t got that ultimate glory in the seniors, which hopefully isn’t too far away. “We’ll come back next year bigger and better and this is not going to stop us from trying.” It was Deer Park’s seventh premiership in a row, a Victorian metropolitan record. With 11 senior premierships, the Lions are fourth on the all-time premiers list behind Spotswood (15), Parkside (14) and Braybrook (12).

Western Bulldogs could not repeat their heroics of two weeks earlier in Saturday’s Victorian Football League women’s grand final. The Bulldogs caused a big upset when they beat minor premiers Collingwood in the semi-finals to be the first team through to the decider, but the Magpies exacted their revenge on the big stage, running out convincing winners by 37 points at Ikon Park on Sunday. In her post-game speech, Bulldogs captain and forward Mickayla Ward conceded the Magpies were the best team over the course of the season. “Firstly, I’d like to obviously congratulate the Collingwood footy club,” Ward said. “You’ve been the benchmark all year and we didn’t just come here today to fill a spot, we came here to work hard, but [you were] too good today, so congratulations to you guys.” Western Bulldogs endured a slow start, trailing by 17 points at quarter-time. It was former Bulldog Jaimee Lambert who did the damage with the opening two goals of the game. It looked as though the first term was merely a hiccup for the Bulldogs, who were the dominant side in the second quarter. The Bulldogs got back into the game courtesy of goals to Sophie Molan and Emma Mackay. The Sean Kavanagh-coached Bulldogs were getting plenty of drive from the likes of Bailey Hunt, Ellie Gavalas, who had 19 disposals each, and Kirsty Lamb, with 15. Unfortunately for the Western Bulldogs, they could not maintain the rage and were out-classed in the second half.
