Family’s plot sold By Esther Lauaki A grieving family has been left angry after discovering a Werribee Cemetery plot, purchased a decade ago by their late father, has been sold. George Harisis selected his final resting place in 2011, but when the 91-year-old died last month the Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust told his family that the plot he purchased was now unavailable. Cemeteries Trust acting chief executive Andrew Eriksen said Mr Harisis had mistakenly been allocated a burial site that was already sold at the time. “Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust does have an online record of the Harisis family’s purchase in 2011 of a burial plot in the

Anglican section of the Werribee Cemetery,” Mr Eriksen said. “Unfortunately, the vacant burial plot in the Anglican section purchased by the Harisis family … had earlier been sold by the previous administrator of Werribee Cemetery.” In 2011, the trust had newly taken control of Werribee Cemetery which was previously overseen by Wyndham council. “Given those circumstances, [the trust] supported the Harisis family with a selection of graves in the same section as the family selected one,” Mr Eriksen said. Mr Harisis’ son, Nikolios, told Star Weekly he was disappointed that the family had been “given the runaround” in their time of grief. “I’m angry that, because of an administrative error, my 87-year-old mother and our family

had added stress while we are mourning,” Nikolios said. “My mother had misplaced the proof of purchase documents for the plots so we contacted Wyndham council three months ago to inquire about the plots. “We were told, first by Wyndham council and then by the cemeteries trust, that they could not find any record of the purchase. “The situation was poorly handled. “All I want is an apology for the stress that they put my elderly mother and our family through.” Mr Eriksen said an apology had been issued to the Harisis family. He advised anyone who has bought a burial plot, but misplaced the documentation to contact the trust to be issued another copy.

Three teenagers arrested following two home invasions and a police chase in Melbourne’s west on Sunday morning have been charged with more than 60 offences relating to a string of crimes stretching back to May. Police allege the youths – a 17-year-old and two 16-year-old boys from Wyndham Vale – forced their way into a house on Duncan Street, Flemington about 6.15am, before stealing handbags, mobile phones and a car. A 43-year-old man, suffered minor injuries after a struggle with one of the offenders, before the trio fled in his car and another dark sedan. A short time later it is alleged the teenagers forced their way into another house in Malibu Grove at Keilor Lodge. The youths attempted to steal a 21-year-old’s car, however the victim and his 24-year-old brother fought them off. As they sped off in an allegedly stolen vehicle parked outside the property, they struck the 21-year-old who suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital. Police sighted the vehicle a short time later, about 20 kilometres away in Kensei Street, Kurunjang. Police pursued the vehicle for several kilometres before it crashed at the intersection of Federation Drive and Melton Valley Drive, in Melton. Three youths were arrested in High Street, Melton about 8.30am. A 17-year-old has been charged with home invasion, theft of motor vehicle, theft, burglary, recklessly causing injury, attempted theft of a motor vehicle, reckless conduct endangering life and evading police. The assault is alleged to have taken place at Sunshine Marketplace shopping centre on September 7. A 16-year-old has been charged with a series of offences including motor vehicle theft, home invasion, handling stolen goods, burglary and evading police. Another 16-year-old has been charged with motor vehicle theft, home invasion, burglary, unlawful assault and a range of other offences. Synnot Street speed reviewed By Alesha Capone The speed limit along Synnot Street, Werribee could be lowered to 40 kilometres per hour and some parking bays removed, as part of a plan to boost road safety. Wyndham council last week considered a report into issues related to traffic growth and transport in and around Werribee’s city centre. The report, requested by mayor Mia Shaw in March, stated that council officers would work with the Department of Transport

on multiple issues, including potentially reducing the speed limit on Synnot Street and some streets in the Riverside Industrial Precinct. It also identified “poor sight lines” at a number of driveway exits along Synnot Street. “While there was no discernible crash

trend on Synnot Street, there is a history of crashes … associated with pedestrians and vehicles emerging from driveways,” the document stated. “While it is noted that there are current concerns around parking provision in the City Centre, a balanced approach is required to ensure safety for those entering and exiting driveways and for pedestrians passing by. “This may result in the removal of some parking to ensure safety.” The report also recommended the council install pedestrian crossings along

Synnot Street, including “puffin crossings” at Duncans Road and Bridge Street intersections, to ensure pedestrians have adequate time to cross the road. The report noted that residents and businesses affected by any changes would be notified “well in advance” of any proposed actions going ahead. Cr Shaw said that it would not be up to the council to decide the “appropriate speed limit” in these streets. “I think we should actually leave that to the experts,” she said.

Emmanuel Bajur could be the next big thing in boxing. The 15-year-old from Tarneit smashed his first appearance in the ring last month walking awaytwo-for-two at a super bantamweight fight night in Essendon. His coach Dave Preston said Emmanuel had only been training for nine months before the bout. Preston said the teen showed dedication, good work ethic and heart. “He stepped into the ring for his first boxing match taking home a win by points,” Preston said. “He came off with a smile on his face and adrenaline to keep going … He then took up an offer for another fight on the same night and walked away with a split-point decision. “Rain, hail or shine, this kid will catch the bus, train and walk all the way to training. He works hard and you can see he’s going to go all the way. “This young, up-and-coming fighter will go a very long way.” Emmanuel is training for another fight this month and has set a goal to become a state champion. Wyndham council has awarded a $1.42 million contract for works at the Lawrie Emmins Motocross Track in Laverton North. The project will involve remediation of the existing motocross track soil profile, bulk earthworks, the installation of an irrigation system, fencing, footpaths, office buildings, machinery sheds, a disabled toilet and carparking. The council awarded the contract to ACE Infrastructure. Construction is due to start next month. Cr Peter Maynard said the works were “a long time coming” after the council first committed to “reactivating” the site in 2013. He said awarding the contract was the first step towards re-opening the motocross track. “I’m certainly pleased to say … that finally the first piece of the puzzle is in place to progress towards the track being re-opened,” Cr Maynard said. “I know there will be many motocross enthusiasts both young and old, male and female, who will be very happy to hear this news.” A council report stated that redeveloping the Lawrie Emmins Motocross Track would provide residents and visitors from outside of Wyndham with a safe place to learn and develop their motocross skills. Tressed for success Wyndham boy Tristan has raised more than $1800 for people suffering from lung cancer. The 10-year-old hosted a Worldâ€™s Greatest Shave event last month, where his long hair was cut off in exchange for donations. Overall, Tristan raised $1804.26 at the event, which he has donated to the Lung Foundation Australia. He also donated his cut-off tresses, which measured 38 centimetres, to Sustainable Salons, which makes wigs for people with illnesses such as cancer and alopecia. Tristan said he decided to grow his hair, in order to shave it off, when he was eight. He said his decision was inspired by his maternal great-grandmother, who died from lung cancer about two years ago, and two

young family friends who also died of cancer. Tristanâ€™s Greatest Shave was held at Tobias Brothers in Werribee, which sponsored him. For the event, Tristan also organised an auction, sausage sizzle, a â€˜guess how many lollies are in the jarâ€™ competition, tea and coffee and the chance for guests toâ– pay to cut off his plaits. Tristan said he was â€œa bit shockedâ€? by the success of his fundraiser. Police body cameras roll-out By Alesha Capone Police in Wyndham and Hobsons Bay will wear body cameras from this week. A body camera, worn on a police officer’s uniform, is used to record video and audio footage. From this week, police on general duties and Highway Patrol officers, of the rank of sergeant and below, will wear the cameras while working in Wyndham and Hobsons Bay. - Russell Barrett Wyndham North police stations. Victoria Police aim to start rolling out 11,000 body cameras to officers by next year. Assistant Commissioner Russell Barrett said the body cameras would boost police capabilities in the west.

“The introduction of body-worn cameras is expected to deliver improved community safety, enhanced evidence gathering, increased police safety and accountability,” he said. “The initial pilot we conducted in April 2018 showed us that camera usage policies, infrastructure and training for police had worked well and police were comfortable using the technology within their first one or two shifts. “Given the pleasing results of their function, along with the overwhelmingly positive

feedback from the community, we are in the process of rolling the cameras out to more officers.” Assistant Commissioner Barrett said officers would undertake regular training which includes the use and functions of the body camera. Police may turn on the cameras in situations where they interact with the public, exercise police powers, arrest someone, issue an infringement, collect evidence, conduct vehicle stops and undertake drug or alcohol tests.

A noteworthy debut Point Cook singer and songwriter Michelle Gardiner has released her debut EP. Gardiner’s self-titled record reached number three on the iTunes Country Albums chart and number 28 on the iTunes All Genres Albums chart. “I couldn’t have been happier with that result,” Gardiner said. “The EP itself is comprised of four self-penned songs, centred on my journey through life and love which I hope can inspire and encourage.” Gardiner recorded the EP with producer Michael Zammit at Airwaves Recording Studio in Altona Meadows. “We make a great team and he has a wonderful ability to make me feel at home in his studio which is important when trying to creatively express yourself,” she said. Gardiner said she was also looking forward to heading to Tamworth next year, and the release of the video clip for her next single,

due out in November. She said the clip was filmed at The Brook in Point Cook, The Avenue nightclub at Pacific Werribee and in the Point Cook Town Centre. Gardiner said the best thing about performing music was the way it brings people together. “The energy you feel in a room where there is live music is so magical,” she said. “Everyone is there for different reasons, have different circumstances and yet the music can bring everyone together to forget their troubles, reminisce, fall in love, move on, dance and just feel great.” Gardiner will perform at the Waterstone Café in Sanctuary Lakes on October 4. Big day for Little River By Alesha Capone The Little River Cricket Club is celebrating its 150th season, much to the joy of the Fairchild family. Three generations of the family have played for the club, including Doug Fairchild who has participated in more than 400 cricket games and is now club president. His eldest son Dylan is a past president of the club and youngest son Nic returned as a coach this season.

Mr Fairchild’s daughter Jordyn also played juniors at Little River and his father Ivan played for the club during the 1960s. “As a family, we’ve played over 500 games in total,” Mr Fairchild said. “Little River is in our blood. “I’m 51 now – I’ve played here since I was 13.” Mr Fairchild’s uncle, John Green, also played in the club’s team which won the Solomon Shield two years in a row in 1960 and 1961.

Wyndham council has signalled that free parking will be made available at the Werribee South Boat Ramp. The council made the announcement last week after it came to an agreement with the state government on the issue. Earlier this year, the government committed to removing boat ramp launching and parking fees for 12 months, while it reviews the management of boat ramps in Victoria. Wyndham’s sports development portfolio holder, Cr Peter Maynard, said the council stopped charging users of the parking facilities at Werribee South Boat Ramp last year while talks were being held with the state government. “Council will be contacting annual pass holders who had remaining credit on their pass to advise of arrangements for refunds to be provided for the remaining credit,” Cr Maynard said. “The move initiated by the state government will make recreational boating and fishing more accessible for all residents by reducing the parking costs near the ramp. “The abolition of fees at the Werribee Boat Ramp will save boaters up to $207 a year for an annual launching permit. “We are pleased to work with the state government to ensure that Wyndham is part of the statewide program and look forward to contributing to the study to ensure that the needs of a growth area such as Wyndham are well considered in the study to determine future management arrangements.”

Fire victims rebuilding their lives By Esther Lauaki A family left homeless after their Truganina house was destroyed by fire is asking residents to “learn from our mistakes”. Tony Trung Pham, his wife, nine-year-old son and elderly parents have been forced from their home of 16 years after a fire ripped through the ducted heating system in the roof in July. Mr Pham said the fire spread quickly through the ceiling cavity and was fully alight before his family realised they were in any danger. “While at work, I got a phone call that our

home was on fire,” he said. “My parents were out and my son was at school … my partner tried to put the fire out, but it was too intense. “The fire investigator told us, by the time she realised the roof cavity was alight, the roof would have been well and truly gone.” Mr Pham said everyone was safe but his family was “emotionally devastated”. “We have lost everything,” he said. “Our whole life’s hard work and memories of our beautiful home - all turned to ash. “My aging parents are living out of a van and my partner, son and I are living from couch to couch until we can … build a new roof.”

The home was uninsured and the Phams now face a $22,000 repair bill. An online Facebook crowdfunding campaign has so far raised $6000 to help replace the roof. “Let this be a warning to triple check your insurance policies are up to date,” Mr Pham said. “Get a professional to check your ducted heater unit yearly, tell your family you love them and appreciate your family and the home you have created, because it could all change in a flash. “We wish upon no one the devastation we are going through.” Donate at: bit.ly/2k0nngU

A performance by students from Hoppers Crossing Secondary College has taken out several awards in the Wakakirri Story-Dance Challenge. As the nation’s largest performing arts event for primary and secondary schools, more than 280 schools and 20,000 young people across the country have taken part in this year’s Wakakirri competition. Every school that participates in Wakakirri must develop an original production which goes for between three to seven minutes, with its story told through dance and drama. The Hoppers Crossing mini-production, titled Be Careful What You Whisper, focused on the impact that rumours and the digital world can have on individual reputations and the behavior young people can engage in when it comes to these issues. Pet ‘charged’ by wandering dog By Alesha Capone Point Cook residents are being urged to look out for a black dog roaming the streets after a vicious attack on a rescue dog last week. It took four people to free nine-year-old Yoshie from the jaws of the dog after it rushed Yoshie and his pet sitter in Parkwood Terrace. Yoshi, a red heeler/papilion cross, is recovering at home after emergency surgery on puncture wounds to his neck. “This dog full charged towards us,” pet sitter Kristel Buttgieg said.

“This black dog had no collar and no owners anywhere to be seen.” Ms Buttgieg said she was walking Yoshie in Parkwood Terrace about 1.30pm on September 4 when what she described as a black pitbull/staffy cross “came out of nowhere”. “Knowing Yoshie [was] recently adopted and wanting to protect him as much as I could, I picked him up and started walking in the opposite direction. “This dog full charged towards us and Yoshie freaked out and fell out of my arms.

“This black dog then pinned him to the ground and latched on. The only thing I could do was try and grab this dog by the scruff of his neck and try and pull him off poor Yoshie.” Ms Buttgieg said she called out to some nearby construction workers for help. “Three of them came to the rescue and it took all four of us to finally get this black dog off,” she said. The dog eventually ran away and Yoshie, who was left with four or five deep punctures to his neck, was rushed to the vets for emergency surgery.

Ms Buttgieg said she later returned to the site to thank the construction workers for their help during the dog attack. Wyndham council’s director of city operations Stephen Thorpe said that a dog attack was reported to the council on Wednesday, September 4. “Council’s animal management team has started its investigation into locating the offending dog,” Mr Thorpe said. “If residents spot wandering dogs without their owners present, we strongly encourage them to contact council on 9742 0777.”

Ms Covacci, of Featherbrook Kindergarten in Point Cook, is one of eight finalists in the national HESTA Early Childhood Education and Care Awards. The awards acknowledge the outstanding work of educators and their commitment to improving learning outcomes for children. HESTA chief executive Debby Blakey said the finalists were recognised for their outstanding work in creating innovative and inclusive learning environments for children. “This year’s finalists have shown exceptional leadership and commitment to their roles as early childhood educators,” Ms Blakey said. “We are pleased to recognise and shine a spotlight on the vital role these educators play in enhancing the learning outcomes of the next generation of young Australians.”

Student’s headline news A budding reporter’s story about her great-grandfather has won her a national journalism award. Year 7 Thomas Carr College student Asheriya won the intermediate section of the Australian Young Catholics Journalist Competition. The theme for this year’s competition was the journey of a family. Asheriya said she was proud to have won the award. She is undecided about which career path she will choose but said writing is definitely on the cards. Teacher Mary Udovicic congratulated Asheriya on her achievement. “Asheriya’s reflection on her Great Aawa [great-grandfather] was full of courage, resilience and hope,” Ms Udovicic said.

“Before writing the reflection, Asheriya interviewed many family members to gain a rich insight into her Great Aawa’s life. “It was a true family collaboration … This is why I immediately felt joy for them all.” Ms Udovicic said she encourages students to “extend beyond the classroom setting”. “It is important for students to see how the skills they learn in the classroom can be used in other settings,” she said. “Having courage to share their ideas with the wider community is crucial in our world. “Taking part in competitions pushes students to think about the content from a big picture perspective.” Esther Lauaki

Wages claim heads to court By Alesha Capone Two juice shops, located in Werribee and Geelong, are facing allegations they underpaid staff. The Fair Work Ombudsman has commenced legal action against the operators of two Hello Juice outlets, alleging they underpaid 27 workers a combined total of $38,458 across several months of 2017. The Ombudsman is taking Skypac Group Pty Ltd and Skypic Group Pty Ltd, which

operate Hello Juice outlets in shopping centres at Werribee and Geelong, to the Federal Circuit Court. Legal action is also being taken against Victorian woman Hua Gong, who was the general manager of both stores. The Ombudsman has alleged that some Hello Juice employees were paid flat rates as low as $10 per hour, which resulted in underpayment of the ordinary hourly rates, casual loadings and penalty rates for weekend and public holiday work they were entitled to.

Workers at the Geelong store were allegedly underpaid $23,902.47 and workers at the Werribee store were allegedly underpaid $14,555.64 in total. Ms Gong and Skypac Group Pty Ltd also allegedly breached laws relating to cash-back arrangements on two occasions, by requiring a worker at the Werribee store to pay amounts totalling $1300 to cover part of a rectification payment and a tax refund payment made to her. The Ombudsman said that Ms Gong and Skypac Group allegedly breached workplace

laws by providing its inspectors with false or misleading records, and allegedly breached laws relating to pay slips and record-keeping. The Ombudsman is seeking court orders requiring the companies and Ms Gong to back-pay the Hello Juice employees. Fair Work Ombudsman Sandra Parker said inspectors discovered the alleged underpayments during self-initiated audits. A directions hearing for the matter has been listed in the Federal Circuit Court in Melbourne for November 15.

Overpass under way Cyclists and pedestrians will soon have a smoother and safer journey through Laverton North as construction ramps up on the first of three overpass bridges. Piling works are under way on a part of the Federation Trail, starting on the northern side of the overpass on Dohertys Road near Hume Road in Laverton North. The bridges will span 140 metres long, four metres wide and will soar six metres above Dohertys Road. Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly said she hoped the project would encourage more families and community groups to use the Federation Trail, which follows the heritage-listed Main Outfall Sewer from Brooklyn to Werribee. “We know cycling is great for fitness and the environment and eases pressure on our roads and public transport, so we’re building these new modern overpasses for the Federation Trail to encourage more people to ride in Melbourne’s west,” Ms Connolly said.

The new overpass, part of the state government’s $1.8 billion Western Roads Upgrade, will remove the need for ground level crossings, and aims to provide riders who use the 23-kilometre trail a safer journey. The Federation Trail will remain open during construction with some detours in place. Work is expected to finish on the first overpass in mid-2020. Ms Connolly said construction will begin on the longest of the three structures – at 220 metres – at Palmers Road and Sayers Road intersection in Williams Landing, along with the construction of the Leakes Road overpass near Interchange Drive at Truganina from this month. MY WYNDHAM Werribee’s Andrew ‘Strahanie’ Strahan is a lifetime member of the Little River Cricket Club, where he has made 3090 runs, taken 422 wickets, 50 catches and coached junior sides across numerous seasons. He chats with Alesha Capone. Tell me a bit about your involvement with the Little River Cricket Club. I’ve played 161 games at the Little River Cricket Club and I also played at the Werribee Cricket Club, where I was a premiership player. I’ve been [at] Werribee Centrals, my last club before here was in Darley – where I also coached – and I also played in the Ballarat League, and did a handful of games with Werribee in the ones. I have won a couple of Geelong bowling averages. When did you first start playing cricket? I was a late starter, I started when I was about 10 or 12 years old. Do you remember why you took up the sport? Just back in those days, everyone played football and cricket. It sounds like you’re pretty dedicated to cricket. I’ve had two heart attacks, a stroke and I have a titanium hip, and kept playing. I’m worried my body is slowly letting me down, but I’ll keep going.

Have you played any memorable matches? There were a couple after I had my stent put in, I reached 100 games. After my hip operation I probably shouldn’t have played as soon as I did – my doctor told me to have two weeks off – but I did play, and I got six fours and 75 not out.

Lego event all stacks up A call has sounded for Lego lovers to get creative and build displays for Wyndham Brickfest. The inaugural event will be held over two days at Thomas Carr College next weekend and organisers want more displays to exhibit. Event chair Andrew Elsbury said the Lego expo aimed to unite enthusiasts from all over the west while raising money for Werribee Mercy Hospital’s new paediatric ward. “The more money we raise means additional services and improved experiences for the children in our community who need to use our hospital,” Mr Elsbury said. He said there was still room for more exhibitors and displays. “We need as many displays as we can get,” Mr Elsbury said.

“There will be plenty going on at the event including a STEM program, modelling competitions and kids area. “We are also looking for donations of Lego to assist our friend Ferris Knight who will be making a world record attempt at walking on Lego to highlight mental health as both cause pain to people … she will be doing her walk on September 15 as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival.” Mr Elsbury has been hooked on Lego since he was a child. “My first Lego set was a police car and my affinity for the brick was born,” he said. Werribee District Hospital faces an increasing accommodation crisis as plans for converting the unused nurses’ home behind the hospital to a rehabilitation ward have been rejected by the Health Commission. The nurses’ home is not being used due to nurses choosing to make their own accommodation arrangements and the hospital’s board of management could make the necessary conversion for a comparatively modest sum.

Only 14 kilometres out of Werribee, on Bulban Rd, a group of modern day pioneers are alive and well and waiting patiently to be ushered into the 20th century. The six families, who have chosen to shun suburbia, will soon be led out of the darkness and into the bright lights of 1989 at the flick of a switch.

Westbourne Grammar School has paid a former student an undisclosed amount in damages in an out-of-court agreement over sexual assault allegations against a former teacher. The school has become one of the first Australian private primary schools to be sued after a former teacher was found guilty.

A drink-driving mother who loaded her car with five youngsters – including two in the boot – and then slammed into a tree after doing burnouts has been spared jail. A celebration of creativity is being fashioned for Geelong Building on the success of the long-running Scarf Festival©, a major biennial design festival coming to Geelong’s National Wool Museum next year will showcase the work of makers, designers and artists. Titled We the Makers Design Festival, its theme will be “Design for the Future: Sustainable and Ethical Textiles and Fashion”. Makers are being invited to submit headwear, neckwear (including scarves), bodywear or footwear that resonates with the theme. These items will be displayed for sale at a Makers Marketplace, with entries divided into categories – wool, innovation, modern, tradition and storyline; emerging maker (13-18 years); and young maker (12 years and under). A Designer Showcase will feature the work of 20 top professional and emerging fashion designers from across Australia and around the world whose work similarly responds to the festival’s theme. All entries will be in the running to win major cash prizes and professional development opportunities, details of which will be announced later this year.

Show has something for everyone Regarded as Australia’s biggest four-day agricultural show, the Royal Geelong Show has never lost sight of its purpose to ‘encourage and promote excellence in agriculture, business, cultural and community activities to the benefit of all concerned’. The extensive agricultural competitions take centre stage, with strong entries across cattle, sheep, horse, goats, alpacas, poultry, budgerigar and dog sections. Away from the animals, the homecraft competitions are always strongly contested, with everything from scones and jam to Lego and photography. The Lifestyle Pavilion is home to all homecraft demonstrators – inspiring entries for next year, and even providing a trick or two to pick up. The Vintage Machinery display is always a crowd favourite with its impressive collection of steam and oil engines, as well as tractors and implements. There’s plenty to see in The Hall of Agriculture. Along with various trade sites, there are cooking demonstrations and horticulture and fodder competitions, showcasing exhibitor’s produce and prize-winning samples from local farmers crops. Educating the next generation is also a focus, with plenty

of fun for the whole family. There are many opportunities to get up close to the animals, as well as watching the excitement of the shearing, woodchop and showjumping. This year’s arena program has something for everyone. Horse events run every day and, once twilight hits, the arena springs to action with monster trucks, motorbikes, whip-cracking and racing pigs. Fireworks light up the sky on Friday and Saturday nights. The western side of the showgrounds is the venue for a carnival with amazing rides for all ages. No trip home is complete without an armful of show bags and, of course, fairy floss and a dagwood dog while there. The Royal Geelong Show runs October 17-20. Wyndhamvale is one step away from an immediate return to the Western Region Football League’s top flight. The Falcons have set up a showdown with Yarraville Seddon in the division 2 grand final at Avalon Airport Oval on Sunday after surviving a tight preliminary final to beat Parkside by seven points at Pennell Reserve on Saturday. Falcons playing-coach Chris Moreland paid tribute to the work his team has done to get to this point. “I’m overwhelmed at the moment,” he said. “I’m just allowing it to soak in. “The whole club is up and about and it’s just so exciting to be a part of. We’ve worked hard for this and it’s a good reward. “I’m just so proud of the boys.” Wyndhamvale had a dream home-and-away season back in the second tier. The Falcons went 17-1 to clinch the minor premiership.

While everything ran smoothly for the Falcons in the regular season, it has been far from the case in the finals. They lost the second semi-final to second-placed Yarraville Seddon and despite going into the game against Parkside as overwhelming favourites, they had to scrap all the way to get over the line. At half-time, Wyndhamvale trailed in the low scoring game by two goals and even faced a four-point deficit at three-quarter time. The character the Falcons needed to secure the victory made it all the more special for Moreland. “We just kept fighting and fighting,” he said. “We really wanted to make sure we’ve given it everything to get to next week.” Wyndhamvale kicked away with 3.5 to 1.0 in the last quarter. The Falcons’ big guns took over the game, such as Bol Kolang in the ruck and Jy Lambley, Daniel Smith and Tyler Tessari on the ball.

“Those four really stood out during that last quarter,” Moreland said. “I put the heat on them at half-time and said ‘I need more from you’. “In that last quarter, they really stood up and it was really inspiring for the rest of the group.” Moreland put Wyndhamvale’s rough start in the match down to two factors. The Falcons did not adapt to the wet and windy conditions and played “a bit cute” early in the game. But all’s well that ends well for Wyndhamvale and it will go through to a mouth-watering grand final with Yarraville Seddon. It is a genuine toss of the coin game between the top-ranked finalist Wyndhamvale and the pre-season favourites Yarraville Seddon. “I’ve played in enough grand finals to know that anyone can win on the day, anything can happen, it’s just game on,” Moreland said. Hawks live the dream By Lance Jenkinson Glen Orden has been to hell and back over the past three years in the Western Region Football League division 3. The Hawks are now one step away from completing an unimaginable comeback from ruins to supremacy. When Phil Crea took charge of the Hawks at the start of the 2018 season, he did so in the knowledge that he would be undertaking a task of giant proportions. Crea effectively took over the team from ground zero after the Hawks had been forced to sit out the 2017 season after a mass player exodus in the pre-season. It was for the sheer love of the club why Crea took on the task. Glen Orden’s biggest win in 2018 was simply running out for their first game. The Hawks lost by 27 points to Point Cook Centrals on that landmark day, but the final score was almost irrelevant. Some said the Hawks would struggle to win a game in their first season back, but they won three. It took the Hawks 10 weeks to get the first chance to sing the song for the first time back, but their 11-point win over North Sunshine was well worth the wait. A week later, they had back-to-back wins, defeating Laverton on home soil, in front of the committee members and supporters who fought so hard to get the club back up and running. The 2019 pre-season arrived and everyone was expecting improvement from Glen Orden after their respect-earning year of 2018, but no one was brave enough to say the Hawks would be a finals contender, let alone a premiership contender. One man believed – Crea. With some handy new recruits and the natural progression of the youngsters that he is so proud of, Crea did not hope for a finals appearance for the Hawks, he expected one. Glen Orden delivered in the home-and-away rounds, finishing third with a 13-5 record. The Hawks spent some time at the top of the ladder and emerged as a genuine premiership threat. Their finals campaign has been super impressive. The Hawks kick-started September with a 41-point win over local rivals Tarneit in a cut-throat semi-final. With a grand final spot on the line, Glen Orden fired up the blowtorch on Sunshine Heights with a thumping 62-point win in the preliminary final at Pennell Reserve on Sunday. Glen Orden is over the rough patch it had towards the end of the home-and-away campaign and is peaking at the right time of the season. In this kind of form, you would not rule out the Hawks from completing their fairytale story with a premiership when they meet Albanvale in the division 3 grand final at the VU Whitten Oval on Saturday.

In division 1, Werribee Districts had a heartbreaking end to its season. The Tigers went down by four points to Spotswood in the first semi-final at Avalon Airport Oval on Sunday. In senior women’s, Manor Lakes’ premiership defence is over after it went down to Caroline Springs by three points at Pennell Reserve. The Storm led at half-time by 24 points, but was overrun in the second half by the fast-finishing Lakers.

Werribee City could not last the course in their quest for promotion from the National Premier League 2 west competition. The Bees were for so long sitting inside the top two, but could not sustain it when it mattered most. Sergio Sabbadini’s team settled for a third-placed finish after a 2-2 draw with Ballarat City at Galvin Park on Saturday. The Bees had a glimmer of hope of breaking into the playoffs before a ball was kicked, but that disappeared when news of second-placed Moreland Zebras scoring goal after goal in a 4-0 win over Whittlesea Ranges began filtering through. Werribee City finished with 48 points, five points in arrears of the Zebras and seven behind champions St Albans Saints. In men’s state league 2 north-west, Hoppers Crossing finished off its season strongly with a 3-1 win over Albion Rovers at Grange Reserve. The Reds finished the campaign in fourth place. Truganina Hornets played out a 2-2 draw with Melbourne University in the last round of men’s state league 4 west to finish mid-table. West Point ran ninth in men’s state league 5 west after a 5-2 loss to Barwon. In the same division, Wyndham United, who lost to Melton Phoenix 7-1, finished rock bottom without a point. Werribee Bears triumph to claim back-to-back titles Werribee Bears have pressed the repeat button in the NRL Victoria women’s first grade competition. The Bears are toasting consecutive premierships after overcoming local rivals Truganina Rabbitohs 24-10 in the grand final at Haines Drive Reserve on Saturday. “It’s always exciting to win a grand final,” Bears coach Chris Kilgarriff said. “Some people arrive at the big stage and can’t finish off. “The vibe that the girls had once they stepped into the changing room, it was always going to be a hard, physical game and it would come down to who wanted it the most. “Going back-to-back, we had everything to lose and we weren’t willing to sacrifice the trophy just yet.” Werribee had the added bonus of defending the title on its home ground in front of its adoring fans. Kilgarriff downplayed the advantage of playing in comfortable surroundings on the biggest day of the season.

“It’s always good to play on your home deck,” he said. “You don’t want anyone to beat you on your home turf. “You’ve still got to work hard and grand finals are always hard to win.” Werribee and Truganina have built up a fierce inter-Wyndham rivalry. The Bears took great satisfaction in beating

their neighbours in the game that mattered most. “They’re our rival club,” Kilgarriff said. “We’re the top two in our competition at the moment and it’s just a battle between us every time we step onto the field.” Werribee did not have to reinvent the wheel to secure its victory. The Bears simply controlled the ball, got dominant play from their forwards and finished off through the backs. It was a simple but effective game plan. “Our forwards dominated the game and set a platform for our backs,” he said. Werribee led 14-6 at half-time. The Bears were in control, but still wary of the threat Truganina posed. “I just told the girls at half-time, we’re ahead, but Truganina is never going to give up,” Kilgarriff said. “They’re a club that will fight till the end. “We had to weather the storm in the first 10 minutes and keep dominating up the middle. “Truganina didn’t have an onslaught, but

their forwards came out more amped up, they were stronger and that’s what we had to weather and we pushed through it.” Werribee half-back Ngahuia Blair took out the most valuable player award in the grand final. Blair’s leadership qualities came to the fore on the biggest stage. “She plays in the halves and leads our pack around the field,” Kilgarriff said. “She just controls our forwards, gives them direction through her vocals and her communication on the field.” Werribee captain Tiana Kani had an outstanding game at prop. Kani produced a lot of carries and chewed up a lot of metres for the Bears. “She led from the front,” Kilgarriff said. “She’s been an excellent leader all season.” Second rower Jean-Shannel Robati was brilliant on the right edge for Werribee. Truganina takes the title By Lance Jenkinson Truganina Rabbitohs have stormed to their first NRL Victoria first grade premiership with a 52-16 pummelling of Altona Roosters in the grand final at Haines Drive Reserve on Saturday. The size of the margin in the season decider was a true reflection of the Rabbitohs dominance this season. The Rabbitohs suffered only one loss in 2019, which came against the Roosters way back on June 1. They won their final 10 games of the season to be crowned premiers for the first time. To underline the strength of the Rabbitohs men’s section, their reserves team won the premiership earlier in the day. “It was a big day for the club,” Rabbitohs coach Frank Mulipola said. “I think the boys will be enjoying the whole week. “It’s only our third year in seniors and second year in first grade.” Truganina entered the grand final red hot favourites after a succession of blow-out wins 40 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 11, 2019

leading up to the finals. However, the Rabbitohs internally never felt comfortable, simply because the Roosters were the one team to beat them during the season and the fact they had to survive an extra point thriller against Werribee Bears in the semi-finals to advance to the grand final. Mulipola believes the last-gasp win over the Bears was instructional for his players. “I think it was all about the way we prepared,” he said. “We learnt from the Bears game how to deal with handling pressure better in semi-finals and grand finals. “We worked on that over the last couple of weeks. “The boys really were told just to enjoy the game and play a Rabbitohs-style game, which is a fast-paced game. “We were able to do that and then the tries started to come in the first 20 minutes and that really set the platform for the rest of the game.” Truganina was in full flight in attack, putting on a show for the big crowd. “The boys have been working hard on defence since the beginning,” Mulipola said. “We also

spend equal time on the way we attack. “We make sure that we play our style of game, a quick game because we have one of the smallest packs in the competition, so we need to play the pace game against the bigger boys, especially since most teams come down the middle.” Truganina hooker James Aspden took out the grand final MVP. “He had a cracker game,” Mulipola said. Aspden, one of two vice-captains, is part of a three-player leadership group with half-back Keni Blair (captain) and prop Tiui Misi (vice captain). The trio have been outstanding leaders for Truganina this season. “Those three have done an outstanding job leading the team on and off the field,” Mulipola said. “I think it’s made a big difference to the overall performance of the team this year.” Outside of the leaders, Rudy Misi was a force for Truganina. Misi made a number of barnstorming runs to put the Roosters defence on the back foot. “That was the best try of the match when he just ran through their whole forward pack to score,” Mulipola said.

Werribee Centrals has bowed out of the GDFL netball finals in straight sets. The Centrals went down 36-31 to Bannockburn in the preliminary final at St Albans Reserve on Saturday. It was the Centrals second chance in the finals, having lost the semi-final bout to Thomson by one goal. The Centrals were minor premiers in 2019.

Werribee Centrals have fallen one step short of the GDFL Smiths Holden Cup football grand final. The Centurions were delivered a knockout blow by Bannockburn in a 30-point loss. Tito Nyawela completed a remarkable finals series for the Centurions, named best for his side in every finals game. Nathan Johnson booted four goals in a losing cause.

It was a wild ride for the Western Jets in the NAB League this season, but it all came to an end with a 35-point loss to Gippsland Power in the semi-final at Ikon Park on Saturday. Mazda3 has been a consistently high seller throughout its 15 years on the Australian market, often contesting the top spots in both its small-medium category as well as overall sales. The latest, fourth generation, model arrived here in February in five-door hatchback form with the four-door sedan joining it a few months later. The previous Neo and Maxx names have been dropped and replaced with new titles based on the two engine sizes: 2.0-litre G20 Pure, G20 Evolve, G20 Touring and 2.5-litre G25 Evolve, G25 GT and G25 Astina.

Safety

New for 2019 is a driver’s knee air bag bringing the total to seven. Advanced safety features have been added including Smart Brake Support (SBS), Lane-Keep Assist (LAS), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR) and Forward Obstruction Warning (FOW). There are also two ISOFIX child seat anchors in the outer rear seats. New to the GenFour Mazda3 is Vision Technology which adds Driver Monitoring, Front Cross Traffic Alert, Cruising and Traffic Support and a 360-degree view camera. It comes standard in the top-spec G25 Astina and as a $1500 option in all other variants.

As tall, boxy SUVs have grown in popularity it seems that designers of conventional sedans and hatches are reacting by adopting a lower and sleeker, fastback styling. So it is with the Gen Four Mazda3. We found the rear of the hatch a little heavy with its bulky C-pillar and much prefer the smoother lines of the sedan.

Driving

Interior

Rear seat passengers in the sedan get more legroom than the shorter hatch as well as a two air vents and drop-down armrest with twin cup holders. Cargo space in the sedan’s boot is now 444 litres, up from the previous 408 litres in the superseded model. The 60/40 rear seatbacks can be lowered by using pull-tabs located on either side at the top of the boot. They don’t quite fold flat. All models have push-button engine start, electric parking brake with auto hold, i-stop automatic spot/start and childproof rear door locks.

Engines / transmissions

The engines are revised versions of the Mazda SkyActiv-G 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder units. The G20 generates 114 kW of power and 200 Nm of torque. The G25 has outputs of 139 kW at 6000 rpm and 252 Nm at 4000 and also comes with cylinder deactivation which allows it to run on two cylinders in light driving conditions. All models are offered with six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions.

Infotainment

Our test car was the Mazda3 G25 Evolve automatic priced at $30,490 plus on-road costs. The sleek profile does mean a bit of a bend to get in and out but once inside the seating is comfortable and supportive. During the urban segments of the drive fuel consumption was reduced courtesy of the cylinder deactivation feature which was barely noticeable. On the motorway the car cruised smoothly with the extra refinement, comfortable seating and large boot suggesting that it could easily qualify for long-distance family transport. Mazda has addressed previous criticism and put a considerable amount of work into reducing noise, vibration, harshness and it has paid off with a much smoother, quieter ride.

Six years ago, Nissan, on the way to the Middle East and the US, dropped off a big brother to its Y61 Patrol large sports utility vehicle. The good news is the Y62 giant is still going; the bad news, there’s still no sign of a diesel option. Capable of carrying up to eight occupants, at more than five metres long and almost two metres wide, the top-of-the-range Ti-L, at $89,880, plus on road costs, can count its closest rival as the Toyota Land Cruiser LC 200 GLX, although the Patrol is more like the Sahara at $115,230. This is the most luxurious and sophisticated Nissan offered in Australia – major gains have been won in fuel efficiency, comfort, luxury, quality and technology, for a top-class drive on and off-road. The 298 kW of power, put through the seven-speed automatic transmission and an electronically controlled, all mode 4WD system, all combined faultlessly to have the Patrol Ti-L test vehicle pushing on with little effort and a lot of composure, while keeping occupants in the comfort to which we could easily have become accustomed. Finally, Nissan has upped the ante with a five-year, unlimited kilometre warranty on all new vehicles obtained by private buyers and includes complimentary roadside assistance during that time. The latest Patrol Ti-L (the test vehicle) is no exception to the rule.

Styling

The super-size Patrol Ti-L is no coupe clone, sticking to the traditional square corners of a large SUV. The uncluttered exterior suits the SUV’s intent down to the ground – a smart on-road presence with a no-nonsense

Infotainment

Features across the new Patrol range include Bluetooth hands-free phone, large format front DVD player, 2GB music server with six speakers, iPod connectivity, steering wheel audio controls, intelligent key access. Surprisingly there is no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto access but there are dual 7-inch DVD screens in the rear of the front seat headrests.

Safety

Six airbags, including curtain bags covering all three seating rows, are fitted. Active safety features include active cruise control, forward alert, lane-departure warning, blind-spot warning and a tyre pressure monitor.

capability off road. Wheels follow suit with sensible 18-inch alloys rolling on tall 265/70 tyres, giving the ability to iron out surface defects on the bitumen.

Interior

Touted as having seating for eight in leather seats, the third row offered a tight fit for grown-ups. Up front is unashamed comfort with driver and front passenger positions

having eight-way electric adjustment and heating/cooling. The driver’s seat also has memory pre-sets. Even with the third row of seats occupied there is enough space (550 litres) to stow a full-size cooler in the load bay. There is a deep centre console cool box, a boon on hot summer holiday journeys, taking up space where you find an electric parking brake on many of the latest vehicles. Here instead is an olde-world foot-operated pedal.

On test there were no surprises with fuel use: up to 18 litres per 100 kilometres consumed in stop/start city work, dropping to an impressively low 10 litres per 100 on the open road.

Summing up

The Patrol Ti-L is for those to whom size matters: those who want a giant shopping trolley; expansive people mover; or sophisticated prime mover that can pull a big boat or float, without paying top dollar. Others need not apply.
