Drop zone warning By Alesha Capone Wyndham council has warned motorists they could be fined if they drop train travellers off in Station Place, Werribee. The council has created new drop-off zones for the Werribee station on Comben Drive, as part of its recently-adopted Werribee City Centre Parking Strategy. The council’s director of city economy and innovation, Peter McKinnon said the spaces had been created to safely and conveniently cater for drop-offs. He said commuter drop-offs in Station Place had caused safety and congestion issues and resulted in some drivers being fined.

“It has always been prohibited to drop off commuters at Station Place,” Mr McKinnon said. He said the new drop-off and pick-up zones in Comben Drive were designed “to better provide for customer/visitor drop-off and pick-up needs”. The council has erected two signs and a temporary electronic messaging board at Station Place, reminding residents of the designated drop-off zone in Comben Drive. Mr McKinnon said a council officer had also handed out information to drivers dropping off commuters at Station Place last week “to advise them of the new and improved arrangements”. The brochures read: “No drop off in Station Place” and “Don’t risk a fine – use the new drop off zone in Comben Drive – enter via Bridge Street”. The council adopted the Werribee City Centre Parking Strategy in June. The parking strategy will be reviewed every five years, with the next review due in June 2024. Mr McKinnon said businesses in the Station Place area had been kept up to date with the actions being implemented under the parking strategy.

Gang attacks ‘out of control’ By Esther Lauaki The mother of a 19-year-old who has twice been bashed says gang violence in Wyndham is “out of control”. Jayden D’Abaco, who has autism, was on a night out celebrating a footy win with his Wyndham Suns teammates on August 24 when he said he was chased down and beaten by up to eight men on Watton Street about 10.45pm. The attack left him with a fractured cheekbone, bruising to his body and throat and a cut to his head.
Police are searching for the offenders, described as African Australian in appearance and aged in their 20s. It was the second time Jayden had been set upon following a disturbingly similar attack on a Tarneit bus in 2017. Jayden’s mum Tess D’Abaco said her son had “shut down” since the recent incident. “It took a lot of work to get him back where he is now after the first attack on the bus two years ago,” Mrs D’Abaco told Star Weekly Weekly. “He’s always wanted independence … but that was shattered.
“Jayden is right back to shutting down again.” She said the state government was failing to protect the public from violent youth gangs. “These things should not be happening,” Mrs D’Abaco said. “If these thugs get caught, they need to be made an example of to stop this from happening again to someone else.” Her husband Frank staged a protest at Spring Street last week against what the D’Abaco family said was the government’s inaction on gang crime. “[Premier] Daniel Andrews keeps saying that
we don’t have a gang problem,” Mrs D’Abaco said. “There’s been attack after attack here in Werribee … You can’t tell me that there’s no gang problem in Wyndham.” State Opposition Leader Michael O’Brien also called for the government to address violent youth crime across Melbourne. Senior Sergeant Samantha Ryan said the attack was spontaneous and “abhorrent”. “There is no excuse for this type of behaviour,” she said. “We want to reassure the community that it is safe and members should be able to walk around the area.”

The Derrimut student was browsing the internet one night and came across a video that started her journey. “I saw a YouTube video of people playing with slime, so I started making it too,” she said. “I love making it because it’s so fun to play with.” Sienna sold one or two tubs of slime early on and turned it into a business Slime By Sienna.

In an Australian-first, The University of Melbourne’s equine clinic in Werribee will soon become home to a CT scanner designed to detect early signs of potentially serious injuries in racehorses. The university, Racing Victoria (RV) and the state government announced last week they would invest $1.27 million to buy and build the scanner. In a statement, Racing Victoria said the scanner would be “the first of its kind in Australia”. “The scanner is designed to help in the early detection of limb injuries that have the potential to become serious or fatal,” the statement said. “The state-of-the-art equipment is currently en route to Melbourne with all stakeholders striving to have it operational ahead of this year’s marquee spring races.” Racing Victoria’s executive general manager of integrity services Jamie Stier said the CT scanner would be one of only three such machines in the world. The scanner is part of a Racing Victoria initiative aimed at minimising serious injuries in racehorses, particularly international horses. Racing Victoria, The University of Melbourne and the state government are also working on a $5.25 million Limb Injury Prevention Project, aimed at early detection and prevention of bone injuries in thoroughbred racehorses. “The welfare of our participants, equine and human, is a priority for the industry and we are continually reviewing and exploring opportunities to further the safety of our sport which is not without risks,” Mr Stier said.

‘Death trap’ intersection fears By Alesha Capone A driver whose car was hit by another vehicle at Hopkins and Boundary roads in Tarneit is campaigning for a roundabout to be installed at what he describes as a “death trap” intersection. Tomas Van Duijne, started a Change. org petition after his car was T-boned at the intersection on August 24, when another vehicle allegedly failed to give way. More than 800 people have since signed the petition.
“There must be a means to an end of the dangerous intersection that thousands of people travel on every day, as they head into the western suburbs or out,” the petition states. Mr Van Duijne said he was “pretty amazed” at the response to the petition. Although there are rumble strips installed on the road near the intersection, he believes constructing a roundabout would be more effective in getting drivers to slow down. “I just want something to be done – it’s just a death trap,” he said.
“I don’t want anyone to experience what I experienced.” Mr Van Duijne, 22, said he felt “very lucky” to not have been badly injured in the accident, in which his car’s airbags released. He has avoided driving through the intersection since. VicRoads manages Derrimut-Hopkins Road, and Wyndham council manages Boundary Road. The Department of Transport’s director of transport and planning (roads), David Teague,
said: “We recently reduced the speed limit from 80 km/h to 60 km/h on the Derrimut-Hopkins Road between Dohertys Road and Middle Road in Truganina. “This 60km/h speed limit will boost safety by reducing the risk and impact of crashes as well as providing drivers travelling on Boundary Road with more time to safely cross over the Derrimut-Hopkins Road, particularly during the busy afternoon peak.” Wyndham council was contacted for comment.
Tarneit night market returns Tarneit nightlife just got a little more exciting. The night market is back and will be held on September 14 at Penrose Community Centre. Wyndham arts, culture and heritage portfolio holder Cr Tony Hooper said the market would embrace tastes and traditions from all over the world. “The concept is to emulate the variety enjoyed at city night markets with crafts, food and music – but with a unique neighbourhood feel, providing local musicians, artisans and businesses with an opportunity to showcase their work while providing residents with free family entertainment close to home,” Cr Hooper said. “With such rich cultural diversity in Wyndham, we have an opportunity to create a unique market experience.” The market will run 5-8pm. Police warning over online sales By Alesha Capone Wyndham police have advised people selling mobile phones and electrical goods online to take precautions when meeting up with potential buyers. The warning comes after a series of robberies reported to police last month. Wyndham police Inspector Marty Allison said the incidents involved people selling mobile phones, laptops and other goods, including vehicles, on social media or internet market places.
When the sellers met up with someone who they believed was a potential buyer, they were robbed and sometimes assaulted. “They [the sellers] were meeting buyers in various locations that didn’t offer much security,” Inspector Allison said. Inspector Allison said Wyndham police posted a warning about the crimes on their official Eyewatch Facebook page on August 14, and have received no more reports about the incidents. “Either the offenders have seen the post and gone, ‘Oh no, the police are onto us, perhaps
we should stop,’ or people have seen the post and are taking precautions when meeting online buyers, or a mix of these two things’,” he said. Inspector Allison said the robberies and assaults were still being investigated. Police are urging anyone selling goods online to meet up with potential buyers in a well-lit public place with CCTV cameras, such as shopping centres or fast food outlets, at a time of day when there are lots of people around. Inspector Allison said it was also a good
idea to take a friend or family member along while meeting a buyer or seller, and to arrange the meeting via a phone call rather than text message. He said people selling vehicles should request to see a copy of a potential buyer’s driver’s licence prior to giving them access to the keys or vehicle. Inspector Allison said potential fake buyers and sellers also sometimes changed an agreed transaction time and location at short notice or presented themselves as a female over the phone but were actually male.
Addiction of archery For Arrows Plus owner and coach Irene Norman, archery is an “addictive” sport. Her Point Cook business will be offering free come and try sessions as part of Wyndham council’s upcoming Healthy and Active Expo. Ms Norman said at Arrows Plus, archers ranged in age from eight to 80 years old. She said archery often attracted people who were not interested in team sports, or in being very athletic. “For me, it’s really nice to work with these types of people who sometimes aren’t very active,” she said. Ms Norman said people with disabilities could also enjoy archery, because equipment could be modified. “Archery is a life sport, but it’s something you can start at any time of your life,” she said. “If you give it a try and you do like it, you can do it all the time, can do it occasionally or compete – whatever you like.
“But be careful, it’s addictive.” The Arrows Plus come and try sessions will be held on Sunday, September 22, Thursday, September 26, Sunday, September 29 and Monday, October 7, at 17 Wallace Avenue, Point Cook. Manor Lakes’ big build By Esther Lauaki The Manor Lakes Central Shopping Centre expansion is shaping up, with construction on a new gym and retail space nearly complete. Stage two of the $60 million project started in April with initial ground levelling and drainage works at the site, structural works and roofing on the new Kmart store and Anytime Fitness gymnasium. The centre will also house a further 23 specialty retailers including Best and Less, a major fruit and vegetable outlet and a 180 square metre multi-functional community room. Ranfurlie Asset Management, a division of the Dennis Family Group, is behind the expansion. Chief executive Mark Wilson said seeing the expanded centre coming to life was creating a sense of excitement among the residents at Manor Lakes. “Everyone is looking forward to the opening of the new facilities which we still anticipate being around April next year,” Mr Wilson said. “With construction of the external facilities advancing well, work on the main hub of the expanded centre will become a focus in the coming weeks. We expect the whole internal slab base will be completed by the end of September.” He said the owners and developers of the centre were working hard behind the scenes on other important aspects of the project. “We are also working closely with Manor Lakes P-12 College, across both their junior and senior schools, on a number of levels with a view to having their involvement on various projects, including students designing murals for the centre and the climbing wall in the playground,” Mr Wilson said.
FAST FACTS • To date, 15,300 tonnes of rock has been excavated and crushed for re-use on the site. Recycling rock in this way has many benefits including reducing transport and containing rock use on site. • A total of 3850 cubic metres of structural concrete will be poured across the centre and 1350 cubic metres of external pavement. • 487 tonnes of steel will be used on the project. • The present construction labour workforce on site numbers 162 people. By October, this will rise to more than 300 and then peak at 450-500 in early 2020 when the project reaches the internal fit-out stage.

The state’s Chief Health Officer, Dr Brett Sutton, said the man – who is aged in his 30s and from overseas – is being treated and recovering in hospital. Dr Sutton said the man attended multiple public areas in Melbourne and took the Metro train from Southern Cross station to Werribee station between 10-11am on Sunday, August 25. He then took the route 170 bus between Werribee station and Pacific Werribee between 11am-noon on the same day. On Sunday, August 18, between 2-3pm, the man attended Highpoint shopping centre. Dr Sutton warned that people who may have been infected by the man while he was in the Wyndham area, could develop measles-related symptoms up until Thursday, September 12. The illness usually begins with common cold symptoms such as runny nose, red eyes and a cough, followed by fever and rash. The characteristic measles rash usually begins three to seven days after the first symptoms, generally starting on the face and then spreading to the rest of the body. Alesha Capone

Richard Harris, who ran a butcher’s store in Hoppers Crossing for 35 years before retiring, is back behind the counter. Mr Harris ran Richard Harris Gourmet Meats in the Old Geelong Road shopping strip – also known as Hoppers Junction – between 1979 and 2014, but sold up with plans to retire. Mr Harris and his store were well-known for flavoured sausages, especially the Mexican
ones. So much so that customers have been asking Mr Harris’ former employee, Wayne Godwin, when he was returning to business. Mr Harris, who also runs a farm, and Mr Godwin have now teamed up as co-owners of a new store, Junction Meats. Between them, the two men have plenty of experience in the meat industry. Mr Godwin worked at Richard Harris Gourmet Meats for about 20 years. Mr Harris said that during construction work

Manor Lakes College students put crime reporting in the spotlight with a recent community safety project. Year 8 students created videos and posters as part of Crime Stoppers Victoria’s Lights, Camera, Safety educational program. The program, run by Crime Stoppers in conjunction with the school, Wyndham council and Victoria Police, aimed to teach young people techniques to prevent crime. Teacher Jodie Peterson said the students learned valuable lessons through the program. “They’ve been able to learn strategies for their own personal safety … and they learn ways to prevent crimes within their area,” she said. Wyndham safer communities portfolio holder Kim McAliney said young people had been instrumental in the project. “I hope this Wyndham initiative is the beginning of all local governments working in partnership with key agencies … on projects such as this,” Cr McAliney said. “It’s about empowering and engaging young people.” Crime Stoppers Victoria chief Stella Smith congratulated the students on their efforts. “We know that young people want to make a difference and we want them to play a role in the safety of Wyndham.” Esther Lauaki

Cafe has bean a hit VCAL students at Al-Taqwa College in Truganina have launched a mobile cafĂŠ. The student-run cafĂŠ, called ATCino, has been open for business in the morning before classes and during recess. It’s also operating on Friday afternoons, after Islamic prayers, in front of the Al-Taqwa Mosque. The college’s VCAL co-ordinator Stefanos Chrisoulis said the cafĂŠ project was designed to give students an insight into running a business, including quality control and costs and profits. “The project is a long-term project and is also aimed at giving our teachers and senior students what they like – a hot beverage!â€? he said. “We
have spent quite a bit to fund the project, and are involving all the VCAL students. “This will follow on to next year, where the year 12 students will do a barista course before working in the cafĂŠ stall. “Any surplus funds will be pumped back into the school for other projects.â€? Mr Chrisoulis said credit needed to be given to the college’s assistant head of VCAL, Miss Urooj Shah, for facilitating the project, and the other staff involved, including Al-Taqwa’s vice principal Mohammad Hallak, who is also a barista. Room boom for schools By Alesha Capone Two Wyndham schools will each receive a new double-storey relocatable building next year thanks to the state government. Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly last week announced that Tarneit Rise Primary School and Truganina P-9 College would both receive a double storey relocatable, valued about $970,000 each, before the start of term one, 2020. Ms Connolly said the architect-designed buildings include four classrooms with double glazed windows and external shades, along with wall and ceiling acoustic treatments to improve classroom sound clarity. The buildings will be manufactured off-site and assembled at the schools. “New buildings for Tarneit Rise and Truganina P-9 will give local students access to great local classrooms and schools facilities, because you can’t deliver a first-rate education in second-rate classrooms,” Ms Connolly said. As of next year, the state government will implement a policy requiring all primary and secondary students at public schools to turn off, and securely store, their mobile phones during school hours with the exception of pupils who use mobiles to monitor health conditions or where teachers instruct students to bring their phones for a classroom activity. Ms Connolly said that ahead of the mobile ban, the government had set aside $12.4 million for schools to apply for grants to buy new resources, such as lockers, secure storage cupboards and padlocks. She encouraged schools in Wyndham to apply for a grant.
VCAT overturns council decision The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal has paved the way for 14 double-storey dwellings to be built at a vacant site in Hoppers Crossing. The tribunal issued its decision to allow the construction of the dwellings at 621 Tarneit Road, last month. Senior VCAT member Rachel Naylor said that the developer had initially sought planning permission for 14 dwellings with a 9.28 metre front setback from the road. Ms Naylor said the council refused this because it hopes to create a service road, using the space in front of properties located on the east side of Tarneit Road. The developers had since amended their design and increased the front setback of the development to 18 metres from the road. Ms Naylor said there were no planning controls or policies in the Wyndham planning scheme to recognise the council’s desire to construct a service road along parts of Tarneit Road in the future. She said the proposed 14 dwellings were of an architectural style similar to other houses in the broader Tarneit neighbourhood, and that the open space planned for each of the dwellings was “of a reasonable size”. “For all of these reasons, the proposal is respectful of the neighbourhood character,” she said.

Sliding into new snake season By Alesha Capone Prepare for snake season. Stewy the Snake Catcher has warned residents of the west that snake season has started, with several slithering reptiles already spotted in suburbs including Wyndham Vale, Point Cook, Williamstown and Altona. The Wyndham-based snake expert, whose ‘real’ name is Stewart Gatt, said although snake season officially began on September 1, he and his team had already received several
call-outs from the western suburbs. Mr Gatt said that during August, he received four calls about snakes in Wyndham Vale; three each from Point Cook and Williamstown and two calls from Altona. He’d also had calls from areas including Laverton North, Keilor East, Kings Park and Bacchus Marsh. Mr Gatt said tiger snakes were the most common breed of snake found in the west. “Second would be the eastern brown snakes, followed by the little whip snakes, white-lipped snakes and very rarely red bellied
black snakes and copperheads,” he said. “If you see a snake, make yourself safe, remove any pets and children from the immediate area and call a snake catcher – follow any instructions they give you until they arrive and you will be safe.” He said to help prevent snakes from accessing properties, yards should be kept clean, grass short and garden beds clean of low-lying coverage. “Debris should be removed from next to your house, if a snake has nowhere to hide, then it won’t feel safe on your property and
less likely to hang around,” Mr Gatt said. “If you have any gaps or holes in your boundary fences, block them up so that snakes can’t enter your property, and on really warm days, don’t leave your doors open, as snakes will enter looking for a nice place to cool down.” Under an arrangement with Wyndham council, another snake handler covers call-outs for snake removals in Truganina and Tarneit. Ping pong’s global goal Heathdale Christian College students put on their game faces last week with a goal to raise $20,000 for a serious cause. The students organised a 24-hour fundraising “Ping-pong-a-thon” at Werribee Baptist Church to combat the global slave trade. Ping-pong-a-thon events are hosted annually around Australia and the US to raise money to go towards the abolition of slavery and human traffiking. Head ping-pong student organiser Danielle told Star Weekly the cause resonated with her and her peers. “I found myself getting more invested in the cause and really ready to help others,” Danielle said. “I could have been sold into slavery, I was just born into a privileged society. We’re the same, just different circumstances.” Heathdale Christian College students raised thousands through movie nights, sausage
sizzles and food order drives earlier this year. Principal Ross Grace said the college had been involved with Ping-Pong-a-Thon over the past three years but this was the first year it had been entirely student-led. “There are 45.8 million slaves in the world today, more than any other time in history. It’s a fact that has hit home with our student body, and a team of students has really taken on the Ping-Pong-a-Thon as their own this year,” Mr Grace said. “They’re a very passionate group of kids, and the whole school is getting behind it.” Mr Grace said over the two-day marathon, 140 students and staff took to the tables making Heathdale Christian College the largest participating school in Australia. Ballan Road repairs on the way By Alesha Capone A driver whose tyre blew out on Ballan Road has called for potholes on the road to be repaired. Bruce Booth said he was driving along the road on August 15, when a pothole caused one of his vehicle’s tyres to blow out. Mr Booth said it cost him $180 to have the tyre repaired.
He said that he was worried there could be an accident “or for someone to be killed” due to the potholes on Ballan Road. Major Road Projects Victoria project director Frank De Santis said Ballan Road was among the roads being resurfaced and improved ahead of a 20-year maintenance program, the $1.8 billion Western Roads Upgrade. “The resurfacing works are a significant
part of the Western Roads Upgrade, and our maintenance program ensures they will make a great difference for drivers for decades to come,” Mr De Santis said. The rehabilitation works on Ballan Road will span eight kilometres, starting from Cobbledicks Ford Road and heading outbound towards Quandong. The work is scheduled to begin in October, and in the interim, the Western Roads Upgrade
team is monitoring and maintaining the condition of Ballan Road. An estimated 18,000 vehicles a day travel in both directions on Ballan Road between Cottrell Street and McGrath Road. The Western Roads Upgrade is part of the wider Suburban Roads Upgrade, a $4 billion package being delivered as part of a Public Private Partnership between the state government and project consortiums.

Baden Powell College students are calling on their community to help bring some comfort to the homeless. The aim is to collect a trailer load of bedding to be distributed by the Uniting homelessness service. Year 7 to 9 students started collecting doonas, blankets and sleeping bags last week as part of the school’s Interact – Help us help the homeless project. Year 7 students, Aaron and Libaan, are helping spread the word about the project. “We’re collecting doonas, and warm sleeping bags to raise awareness about the homelessness in our neighbourhoods,” Aaron told Star Weekly. “It’s really cold right now and the homeless people could use some warmth … we really want to give them some hope.” The drive for winter warmers will be open until September 18 at the school’s Tarneit campus.

Festival of spirit Werribee youngsters hope to spread peace, harmony and “spiritual vibes” at this weekend’s Wyndham Ganesh Festival. Children aged between six and 12 years old hand made clay idols at a recent art workshop in preparation for the annual festival in honour of Lord Ganesha, the Indian god of new beginnings. Hoppers Crossing’s Arundhati Kalamkar-Mhalgi said she holds workshops to teach children about Indian tradition. “The festival is marked with the installation of Ganesha clay idols in homes or on elaborate temporary stages,” Ms Kalamkar-Mhalgi said.
“Since last year I have been holding Ganesh idol-making sessions for kids. “Wyndham has a growing Indian community and there is a lot of excitement around the Ganesh festival held each year during September.” The festival includes food stalls, dancing, exhibitions, entertainment and traditional sweets. The Wyndham Ganesh Festival is on September 7 between 4-5pm at Westgate Sport and Leisure Complex in Altona North.

Legal battle over dumped precinct The Andrews government was negotiating with the consortium behind plans for a $31 billion Werribee “super city” right up until the project was scrapped, the chairman claims in Supreme Court documents. Chinese-backed Australian Education City was picked as the preferred developer in 2015 to turn a huge parcel of publicly-owned land in East Werribee into a sprawling education, research and housing precinct. But the project was abandoned by the Andrews government last month. The consortium has now gone to court to recoup the $93 million it claims it has invested
over five years. In a writ filed in the Supreme Court, AEC executive chairman Bill Zheng named several Andrews government ministers and officials he said continued to negotiate with him until the proposal was dumped. The consortium said it met several times with government officials throughout 2018. It was told that “the ministers had no desire [to make a decision] in relation to the project prior to the state election” in November 2018, “and that the project would be dealt with after that time”. The writ claims AEC met again with state bureaucrats in December 2018 and March 2019,
including meetings with a deputy secretary, David Latina, in the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources. Assistant Treasurer Robin Scott is named as a defendant in the proceeding, along with Priority Precincts Minister Gavin Jennings. The affidavit claims that Treasury secretary David Martine told the consortium in March 2018 that Mr Scott was “very keen” on AEC’s proposal. The government cancelled the process of negotiating with AEC last month, with Mr Jennings issuing a media release saying the government would “continue to explore ways
of maximising Werribee’s potential”. Treasurer Tim Pallas did not answer questions last week on whether the government would pay the consortium the $93 million it is asking for. “People have rights and they’re pursuing those,” said Mr Pallas, who promised to “defend the state’s interests”. Opposition leader Michael O’Brien said the project had been badly bungled by the Andrews government, delaying jobs and housing for people in Melbourne’s west.

The Heathdale Christian College school captain has already caught the attention of recruiters after being awarded the prestigious Australian Defence Force Academy Education Award – presented to only 50 students across the country. Young Jun, a year 12 student, was recognised for outstanding academic performance in the past year, leadership potential and sporting achievements. Principal Ross Grace said it had been an honour to watch Young Jun fulfil his dream to enter the Defence Force. “We’re delighted for Young Jun,” Mr Grace said. “As our school captain, he daily exudes leadership qualities that this award celebrates. “He’s been an incredibly servant-hearted leader of our community.
“Young Jun was selected after an extremely competitive selection process, including aptitude and medical assessments, psychological and recruiting interviews and a selection board panel from which all applicants are ranked in order of merit. “He has been conditionally accepted to train as an officer in the Australian Army next year … winning the award doesn’t require him to continue with the Defence Force, it’s a stand-alone honour.” Esther Lauaki

ANZ loses bid to relocate teller The ANZ has failed in its bid to force a teller with arthritis to move to another branch after working in Hoppers Crossing for more than 20 years. Irene Guesdon, 68, was told her role as a service consultant at the Werribee Plaza was no longer needed in July 2018 in a restructure. The grandmother turned down another role at the branch because she said it was not comparable, and was then offered work between the Melton and Brimbank branches. But her commute would take an extra 70 minutes a day from her Wyndham Vale home,
and she argued the extra travel time and fuel costs amounted to a breach of the enterprise agreement by having an “unreasonable impact”. Mrs Guesdon, who has arthritis in both hands, also said the Brimbank office had no teller cash recycler machine, which helped her count cash. She argued her employment should be made redundant if a reasonable job could not be found. The Fair Work Commission in May agreed the move would unreasonably affect Mrs
Guesdon, despite accepting the ANZ acted in good faith and made genuine efforts to accommodate her. The drive to Melton or Brimbank would take at least an extra 35 minutes each way, FWC agreed, and cost an extra $9 to $15 a week. The bank appealed the decision, but lost with the full bench saying the decision did not raise any issue “that would enliven the public interest” to warrant it. The May decision was particular to Mrs Guesdon’s circumstances, the full bench said, and would not establish a
standard for what amounts to “an unreasonable impact”. “The ‘worst-case’ result of the decision may be that ANZ will need to retrench Mrs Guesdon and pay her redundancy entitlements,” vice president Adam Hatcher, deputy president Alan Colman and Commissioner Donna McKenna said in their decision last week. “If so, that would not in our view be a significant burden for an employer the size of ANZ.” – The Age
Music sets the tone Dozens of young musicians showed off their talents at the Thomas Carr College Moments concert. Senior music students took to the stage for the annual showcase which featured songs by soul greats Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder. Head of music Mat Morse said the concert gave students the opportunity to fine-tune their skills. “The Moments concert provided the students with the experience of performance and is a way for us to showcase the extensive music program that we run here at Thomas Carr College,” Mr Morse said. “There were around 70 students who participated in the choir and band, along with a number of music staff and a special guest vocalist Raleigh Williams. “We also had non music students participate in other ways – some ushered guests to their seats and two students acted as the official
photographer and videographer for the night as part of their VET studies. “We hope that these kinds of concerts help to build on their experience as a performer, contributes to musicianship and build students’ confidence.” Esther Lauaki

The standard of the rail service to Laverton and Werribee was severely criticised at the August meeting of Werribee Shire Council, being described as “deplorable”. Cr. Kevin Skehan in making the criticism, referred also to the dumping of eight children at Broadmeadows when parents were expecting them at Spencer Street.

UPDATE ON THE WEST GATE TUNNEL PROJECT The West Gate Tunnel Project is entering an exciting phase, with preparations continuing for tunnelling. The first Tunnel Boring Machine, Bella, will bore the longer 4-kilometre outbound tunnel. This tunnel starts at Yarraville and heads south-west towards the West Gate Freeway near South Kingsville. The new tunnel will link the West Gate Freeway near Williamstown Road to the port and the city. Bella will tunnel about nine metres a day, and tunnelling will take about 18 months. To allow tunnelling to begin, there has been another important milestone achieved – the moving of the North Yarra Main Sewer that ran below the centre of Whitehall Street in Footscray and Yarraville. Diverting the sewer protects it from tunnelling and prevents disruptions to essential services. After a year closed, Whitehall street will be reopened to traffic. The widening of the West Gate Freeway to provide four extra through lanes is well underway, and will soon involve the replacement of two pedestrian bridges at Rosala Avenue, Altona North, and Muir Street, Spotswood. Installation will start in the coming months, in preparation for opening before the end of the year. The first of 14 kilometres of new noise walls are being installed at Crofts Reserve, Altona North, so that nearby residents and the thousands of people who use the important reserve will be protected from the noise from the 200,000 vehicles that use the West Gate Freeway every day. In total, about 4000 new noise wall panels will be installed along the West Gate Freeway, making a significant difference for the community. The noise walls will be installed progressively along the freeway over the next few years. Nearer to the city, on Footscray Road, we have shifted westbound traffic onto new temporary traffic lanes so that we can start building a construction site down the middle of Footscray Road and get to work on the elevated road that will run above it, connecting the tunnel to the port, city and CityLink. Improving connections The West Gate Tunnel Project is building more than a tunnel. The project will link the west of the city to the port, the city and CityLink. A bridge over the Maribyrnong River will connect the tunnel to the city through links connecting to Dynon Road, Footscray Road and an extension from Wurundjeri Way. The new roads will better connect Melbourne's freeway network, giving people from the west another way to get to the city, hospitals and the universities in the north of the city.

She talks to Esther Lauaki about this year’s ghoulish event. What’s your connection to Wyndham? I am a proud resident of Manor Lakes and am one of the event organisers for the annual Manor Lakes Halloween event that raises money for the Starlight Children’s Foundation.
and Hadyn Pettingill, were also Halloween enthusiasts. Stephanie is originally from Wisconsin and was happy to have some fellow North Americans to decorate with. We became known as the ‘Halloween houses’ by kids in the area. We decided to have a big Halloween bash and invited a whole bunch of friends and people in the community and turn it into a fundraiser for sick kids.
How long have you lived in the area? I have lived in Manor Lakes since 2011. What are you passionate about? I’m passionate about physical activity and being an active member of my community through volunteering. I love meeting new people and the camaraderie that comes with being part of an event that brings people together. I guess you could say that I’m a bit of a social butterfly. My passions include running, Bikram yoga and tango. I guess you could say that I’m a jack of all trades but a master of none. I think variety is the spice of life and I love trying new things. I’m also a bit nuts about Halloween.
What other hats do you wear in the Wyndham community? I am also an event director for Wyndham Vale parkrun, a free 5km running/walking event that takes place every Saturday at 8am in President’s Park.

We’re expecting around 2500 people to attend our Halloween event this year which will be on Thursday, October 31 from 5-10pm. Our display includes a realistic cemetery, animatronics, life-size audio-visual projections and spooky sound effects. There will be a costume contest with great prizes to be won and we will be handing out 150kg of lollies for trick-o-treaters with members of the Victorian Cosplay Society dressed in cool costumes that you can get your photo taken with. CONSIDER THE SAUCE It’s all about the chicken for Kenny Weir The men of Consider The Sauce are hungry. There’ll be no mucking about tonight. Specifically, there’ll be no trucking with the half measures of ordering half a chicken. So we order a whole one ($34). This a Korean first for us, ordering a whole one that is. It’s ambitious, too, as we know that when Korean eateries say “whole chicken”, they invariably mean a whole lot of pieces that appear to amount to significantly more than a whole bird. But just because we order the big deal, doesn’t mean we’re wanting – or are able – to eat it all. We don’t. So four pieces go home and will constitute, the next day, probably the best school lunch Bennie will ever have. The cool thing about this chicken – we get half sweet chilli, half soy/garlic – is that despite being quite wet with the sauces, all the pieces retain wonderful crunch. Did someone say Korean fried chicken is better than hipster joint fried chicken? Yes. We did. Incredibly, despite the poultry excellence, our fried chicken is marginally upstaged in the flavour department by our other dinner selection. From the chargrilled barbecue list we get spicy pork bulgogi ($22). The thin-sliced meat is of heavenly taste. It sits on crunchy cabbage and there’s enough

We eat it, in the style of san choi bao, encased in the accompanying cos lettuce leaves. Wyndham City Council has contracted Citywide Service Solutions Pty Ltd to Manage its Vegetation Electrical Line Clearance Program. As part of this program, the street trees and powerlines are inspected regularly to ensure no impact to power supply through conflict with trees. All vegetation maintenance work is required to be carried out in compliance with the Electrical Safety Act (Electric Line Clearance) Regulations 2015. These regulations stipulate a minimum safe clearance between trees and powerlines, to keep re-growth clear of power lines. Wyndham City Council is responsible for management of power line clearance in the area highlighted in the map below. The tree works in this area will be carried out over the next four months. Regular auditing occurs throughout the year. All works will be conducted in accordance with the Wyndham City Council Tree Policy 2015. SPORT Devils take the championship By Lance Jenkinson Werribee Devils have stunned the Victorian basketball community, claiming the Big V women’s state championship title in a promotion year. The Devils clinched the championship with a 2-1 win over Keilor Thunder in a best-of-three grand final series. It was the Devils first senior women’s title since 2009 and it means so much more than just another banner to add to the collection. Devils coach Reece Potter said the title was a reward to the people who breathed life into the Devils women’s program and the legacy of this championship will be felt for years to come. “That last couple of seconds when we realised we got over the line was something pretty special,” Potter said. “Three years ago, they didn’t even have a women’s import, so they’ve changed their mindset, invested in the women’s program and invested into women’s sport and it’s part of a bigger association plan to impact that area going forward, which is a growing area of sport. “It was great reward for a lot of hard work from people within the team and also off the court who have been trying to turn the program around. “It’s pretty special to be honest.” Werribee’s glorious moment, 10 years in the making, was delivered on its opponents court at the Keilor Basketball Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Devils gave up their series lead with an 81-75 defeat to Keilor Thunder in game two on Saturday night, but came back less than 24 hours later to produce an unforgettable 67-61 victory in game three. It was a tight deciding game the whole way through, but the Devils just seemed to have the answers every time the Thunder threatened. Potter was left in no doubt that Werribee’s defence was the difference in the game. “I thought we did a really good job defensively today,” Potter said. “We really tidied that up from last night [in game two]. “We upped the ante, we upped the pressure and we kept subbing and rotating. “I thought our whole team did a great job all playing their roles and winning the championship was a great team effort.” Werribee import Alexyz Vaioletama took out the award for the most valuable player of the

Vaioletama, a 26-year-old power forward, showed why she has signed a professional contract with Greek side PAOK, coming up big for the Devils in key moments. She produced impressive all round lines in each of the three games. In game one, she had 14 points, six rebounds, four assists and three three-pointers. In the second game, Vaioletama scored her season-best 23 points and in the deciding game she reeled in a massive 15 rebounds to go with 13 points. “She was solid throughout the year, but she really stepped it up in the finals,” Potter said. “She hit big shots, got big rebounds and made big plays at crucial times today and through the finals series.” No one would have argued if Werribee’s Alisia Jenkins received the MVP – but only one player can get the honour. Jenkins was massive at both ends of the floor for the Devils, showing off her sweet shooting stroke and touch around the basket en route to averaging 24 points and 15 rebounds per game in the grand final series. She also had the responsibility of marking Thunder star Erin Bollmann for large chunks of the series and stuck to the task admirably. “Everyone was happy to play their part and that’s been key for us all year,” Potter said.

Werribee overcomes the odds to set a new standard

Werribee Devils had to overcome significant odds to achieve a fairytale championship in their first season back in the Big V basketball women’s top flight this year. The Devils last tasted premiership success a decade ago and that was in the second-tier division 1. Last year, the Devils finished sixth in division 1, so there was no indication of them being a team that would go up and pose a threat to the establishment. The Devils women’s program has spent a long time in the wilderness – some would point to neglect, others would point to a slower than expected internal growth. Either way, the Devils were a long way off the top of the women’s state championship mountain. With this title, secured with a 2-1 series win over Keilor Thunder, in front of hundreds of the Devils junior girls and boys, the kids of the Werribee Basketball Association can begin to dream about what might be in their basketball futures. “It will be a real shot in the arm for our program for the coming years,” Devils coach Reece Potter said.
“Hopefully all those young kids that watched, aspire to one day play in the Big V in 10 years time, so it’s a great day for the club.” Werribee had to run the gauntlet in the playoffs. The Devils had to survive an elimination game against Hume City Broncos to advance beyond the first week. The second round saw Werribee facing back-to-back champions Sunbury Jets. The Jets have owned this competition in recent seasons and the Devils not only had an enormous task of ending their dynasty, but having to do so on the Jets home court at Boardman Stadium in a do-or-die game. After conquering the Jets, Werribee had to face one of the fiercest defensive units in the league, the Keilor Thunder, who had home court advantage. The Devils not only won the series, but took the deciding game on the road. Potter said the calibre of his team’s victories meant his third-ranked team in the finals were deserving champions. “Hume City, who we had to beat in an elimination final, were an outstanding team, really deep, really talented and a storied history at Big V level,” Potter said.
“Sunbury, everyone knows they’re the gold standard in recent years. “Keilor is a defensive juggernaut, they make it tough, they’re physical. “To get past those three teams was an outstanding effort by our group.” So driven is he to create sustained success at Werribee, Potter was already looking into the future of what the program will look like hours after the grand final celebrations. Potter is hellbent on ensuring the Devils are no one-season wonders. “It’s about building a bit of sustained success and keeping that core together,” he said. “We’re planning for that pretty quickly so we’re competitive year in, year out.” While Werribee is content with its status as a Big V Basketball club, it will be knocking on the door of the new NBL1 competition about an entry into the league when spots open up in the future. There are no western suburbs clubs in the NBL1 competition, which leaves a gaping hole if the league wants to capture the whole of metropolitan Melbourne and particularly the growing region of Wyndham. Werribee Districts is the last Wyndham team standing in the Western Region Football League division 1 after it poleaxed local rivals Hoppers Crossing by 68 points in a one-sided elimination final at Avalon Airport Oval on Sunday. The Tigers set up their victory in the sunshine in the first half before running riot in the wet in the second half to kick-start their finals campaign in a brutal fashion that even their coach Chris Gilham did not see coming. “It was a brilliant day for us,” Gilham said. “I couldn’t have dreamt it would go any better.” Whether the ground was bathed in sunshine or once the heavens opened up, one constant for Werribee Districts was its dominance at the stoppages. The key factor to the Tigers getting first use was ruckman Will Sullivan. The former West Coast Eagles-listed big man has made his tap work an art form this season and the midfielders are lapping it up. “He’s definitely the key to our success, that’s for sure,” Gilham said.
“He was unbelievable in the ruck and our ground level blokes fed off that. “He rucks 90 per cent of the game and teams throw two or three at him at times and he keeps standing up. “His follow-up work is really good as well.” Nayef Hamad, Bailey Siwek and Dillon Viojo-Rainbow were superb in the midfield for Werribee Districts. Gavin Donnon also had a big role to play for the Tigers as an extra rotation following a concerning foot injury to Trent Lee. Hamad arguably had the biggest influence on the game. “Nayef was really good at the clearances,” Gilham said. “He just gave us that really strong body in the middle. “All our midfielders were great, we could’ve thrown any of them in our best to be honest, but we’re not the biggest team in the world, so Nayef’s physicality was important.” Oscar Junker and Chris Molivas were the focal points of the Werribee Districts attack. and Molivas added three. Werribee Districts will face Spotswood in a cut-throat semi-final at Avalon Airport Oval on Sunday. The Woodsmen are licking their wounds after a 30-point loss to Deer Park. Deer Park will meet minor premiers Altona in the other semi-final for the right to be the first team through to the grand final. In division 2, Wyndhamvale will be forced to take the long route to the grand final after losing its semi-final to Yarraville Seddon by 25 points at JR Parsons Reserve. The Falcons will meet Parkside, who pipped Point Cook Centrals by four points, in the preliminary final at Pennell Reserve on Saturday. In division 3, Glen Orden was too strong for Tarneit in its do-or-die semi-final, winning by 41 points. By Lance Jenkinson Every footballer has dreamt about kicking the winning goal after the final siren, but most go through their whole career without even facing that scenario and some just choke in the spotlight. Werribee Centrals forward Josh Sutton got the chance to live out that dream scene on Sunday and became the hero for his team with his set shot sealing an incredible one-point win over Inverleigh in a cut-throat semi-final in the Geelong and District Football League Smiths Holden Cup at St Albans Reserve. “It was extraordinary,” Centurions coach Nick Smith said. “He takes the mark and the siren sounds as he’s walking in for his shot on goal. “He kicked it after the siren and there were scenes, it was massive.” Sutton was relatively quiet for Werribee Centrals for most of the game. In wet and windy conditions, it was not ideal for a key forward to show off his aerial capabilities. The game might not have belonged to Sutton, but the moment undoubtedly did. Make no mistake, this victory was signed, sealed and delivered by Sutton because of his willingness to stay engaged on a day when it might not have all gone his way. Trailing by five points with only seconds left on the clock, Werribee Centrals needed a miracle. Sutton produced a miraculous feat. The first part of Sutton’s act was to take a strong contested mark. A long ball was kicked into his space and he double clutched at the ball before reeling it in for a mark. The second part was the kick. Standing about 35 metres out on a 45-degree angle, Sutton could not have been in a more pressure-packed situation. He had opposition players screaming at him, car horns blowing and the Centurions 2019 season on the line. He calmly went back, went through his process and kicked truly before mayhem broke out. All of Sutton’s teammates rode the kick home before mobbing him stacks-on-the-mill style. Perhaps Sutton’s greatest feat was managing to avoid injury with his 17 teammates jumping all over him. “In an elimination game like that, it doesn’t get much more clutch,” Smith said. “He’s only a 21 year-old kid.” Werribee Centrals got out of jail. The Centurions trailed for most of the day and were second best throughout. The Werribee Bears dynasty is over in the NRL Victoria first grade. The Bears quest for a fourth consecutive title ended in heartbreaking fashion with a 25-24 extra time loss to Altona Roosters in the preliminary final at Langama Park. It took a remarkable long range field goal from Roosters young gun Pita-Will Purcell to end the great Bears era. The Bears lost two games in the finals in extra-time. Truganina Rabbitohs and Altona Roosters will be vying to be crowned the new champions of the league in Saturday’s grand final at Werribee’s home Haines Drive Reserve.

Werribee City’s dreams of a National Premier League 2 west title are over. The Bees coughed up a lead in a 2-1 loss to St Albans Saints at Churchill Reserve on Sunday and fell out of contention. Heading into a final round clash with Ballarat City at Galvin Park on Saturday, the Bees are still in with a mathematical chance of reaching the playoffs, though it is a long shot. The Bees will not only need to beat Ballarat City, but also hope second-placed Moreland Zebras lose to the Whittlesea Ranges.
