The long line of cars snaking down City Vista Circuit before kick-off was the first sign of a grand opening night for Western United. The A-League side took to the field for its first pre-season friendly before a massive and enthusiatic crowd of 3267. It was a successful night for Western United with its historic first game ending with a hard-earned 4-0 win over state league 1 club Caroline Springs George Cross at City Vista Recreation Reserve. United chief executive officer Maurice Bisetto was overwhelmed by the crowd in attendance on a chilly Thursday night. “It was incredible, it exceeded all expectations,” Bisetto said. “To have 3000-plus here tonight when it was three degrees at one point on a cold Thursday night … I still can’t believe it to be perfectly honest.” With a 35th minute free kick from star import Alessandro Diamanti that turned into a powerfully headed goal from Valentino Yuel, Western United was on the board and on its way. Further goals to Connor Pain, Dylan Pierias and Apostolos Stamatelopoulos, completed a perfect start. Coach Mark Rudan was impressed with his team’s performance. “Very early stages, but at this point in time, I’m pretty content with what I saw out there,” Rudan said. Lance Jenkinson

Gender strategy ditched By Esther Lauaki Wyndham council has shelved a strategy that would have provided an action plan for gender equality. The gender equity strategy, the first of its kind for Wyndham, was aimed at breaking down gender-based discrimination and promoting “equal opportunity”. But in a split decision at this month’s meeting, six councillors voted down a motion to release the strategy for public comment. Wyndham corporate affairs manager Emily Keogh said no further work on the strategy

in its current form would occur. The latest version of the strategy, which council has so far spent $16,000 to develop, involved significant consultation with agencies, community members and staff. It proposed initiatives such as International Women’s Day events, working with sports clubs to boost females in leadership roles and actively encouraging women to run for council. Cr Tony Hooper vehemently opposed the strategy in its entirety based on “principle”. “I cannot support poor policy wrapped up in the cloak of action on domestic violence,” he said at the meeting.

“There are actions in this strategy stating council will spend resources in promoting female and gender diverse people to run for council,” he said. “We are kicking goals anyway … we employ more women than men – 51 per cent of managers and 62 per cent of the executive are women. Isn’t that awesome.” Trish Crossin, who was on the committee that developed the strategy, said the lack of support showed that some councillors were “out of touch” with the community. “I am extremely disappointed and frustrated at the response of the councillors during that

meeting,” she said. “Clearly there are some who do not understand the reason, research or background to the benefits of such a strategy. “There is clear evidence that a gender equity strategy, coupled with proactive targets and outcomes, supports women and girls to be safer and stronger in their homes, workplaces and community.” Cr Kim McAliney said she was “shocked” that the strategy was not supported. “We should treat everyone fairly and with respect regardless of their gender,” she said at the meeting. “I’m surprised that this council … would not support it.”

Nine years for Truganina deaths By Esther Lauaki An unlicensed drunk driver who caused a Truganina crash that killed two children will serve at least nine years in prison. Damian Tiahaiere Rakatau, 42, was driven home to Rockbank from a rugby club function in Melton South in July last year after drinking 25 cans of Double Jack, a mixture of Jack Daniels and cola. At close to midnight, Rakatau took his partner’s car and drove along the Western Freeway.

Court documents said witnesses noticed him driving erratically about midnight on July 7, travelling up to 115km/h along Hopkins Road in Truganina. The Ford Territory Rakatau was driving collided head-on with a Ford Fiesta sedan carrying a family of four. Ruana Panicker, 10, and her brother Immanuel, 4, died from their injuries. The children’s parents were both injured in the crash and the mother, Manju Varughese, is unable to return to work. Rakatau was jailed at the County Court last

week for 13 years with a minimum non-parole period of nine years. Judge Sarah Dawes revealed that while Rakatau has been remanded in custody since the crash last year, his long-term partner had suffered a heart attack and died in a car accident. Judge Dawes said Rakatau had had no contact with anyone outside prison since his partner’s death and his depression had been aggravated by the loss. “In the words of your counsel, you accept that the blame for this accident lies at your own feet,” she said in her judgment.

Rakatau had never held a valid driver’s licence and had been found guilty of unlicensed driving on five previous occasions. “Your driving was grossly negligent, compounded by your drunkenness,” Judge Dawes said. “The sentence that I will ultimately impose is in no way a reflection of the value of the children’s lives.” Rakatau pleaded guilty to two counts of culpable driving causing death and single counts of negligently causing serious injury and unlicensed driving.

Dad’s twin celebration Dads around the country will be showered with socks and jocks on Sunday to celebrate Father’s Day. Dad Aaron Randall said he was looking forward to spending time with his two-year-old twin daughters Kenzie and Maddison. “I’ll be working on Father’s Day but once I get home, I’m sure I’ll have a surprise waiting for me, whether it’s some sort of gift or card from

the girls,” he said. Kenzie and Maddison were born two minutes apart and three months prematurely. “One was 660 grams and one was 780 grams,” Mr Randall said. “But you wouldn’t know it now – they’re little battlers and flying along.” Mr Randall said raising his two beautiful girls had been very rewarding. “It’s changed my life,” he said.

“It’s unbelievable just to watch them grow. I’ve been lucky enough to be a stay-at-home-dad for a year and a half now and I just love it. “It’s just joyful and rewarding. There are times when you get pushed to the point where you need a breather, but it’s [parenting] just fantastic. You just can’t beat it.”

A “mobile-on-demand” bus service is being trialled in Point Cook. The Wynbus service launched a six-week trial last Saturday with a fleet of eight and 10-seater buses which run in areas not serviced by other public transport and on “flexi routes” based on public demand during off-peak times. Point Cook Action Group committee member Senthill Sundaram led a team in developing the Wynbus public transport app – a mobile ride-share system which involves people signing up for the app and paying a registration fee. Mr Sundaram said members select their preferred hop-on and hop-off locations from designated locations. “We don’t want people stuck at home because they don’t have a bus near their house or because they cant afford a taxi or Uber,” he said. “It’s really exciting, the community is really excited about the service,” he said. “We’ve needed an on-demand transport system in Wyndham for some time. We identified public transport black spots through community survey and we’ve conducted traffic research for a number of months.” Mr Sundaram said he hoped the service would expand to include all of Wyndham through further sponsorship. “This app is not limited to Point Cook, we’re getting a lot of queries from Little River and Truganina,” he said. Passengers will be charged $4 during peak-hour, or a $3 concession. A special $2 fare will be offered for the first two weeks of the trial during peak hours of 6-9am and 4-7pm. Year 12 student Tamara and Skyler add their touch to a kinder art project. (Joe Mastroianni)

Kinder culture creation The artistry of young people has created an indigenous addition to Tarneit North Kindergarten. The art project, a collaboration between 60 kindergarten children and 100 secondary students from Tarneit P-9 and Senior colleges, is aimed at raising awareness of indigenous culture. Tarneit North Kindergarten supervisor Louise Pittito said she wanted the children to learn about their community. “Our kinder opened last year and our No.1 priority is our community connection, Ms Pittito said. “It’s a collaborative indigenous arts project. “One of the students from Tarneit Senior College and her sister identify as Aboriginal

and they have guided us [in] including a piece of their culture into our kinder. “We really wanted to strengthen our children’s awareness of the Aboriginal culture in our community. The large mural will hang at the entrance of the kindergarten. ■Tarneit Senior College’s Stephen Baker said it was an opportunity for the secondary students to reach out to the community. “Until now, we have spent three years building them into the best version of themselves, he said. “We saw this as an opportunity to send them as trusted representatives of the college to give back to the community.

Volunteer nets top award By Esther Lauaki Netball keeps Hoppers Crossing’s Emily Lacy busier than most 21-year-olds. She was recently named Wyndham’s Young Volunteer of the Year for her roles within the Hoppers Crossing Netball Association. Emily was presented with the prestigious title at this month’s Wyndham Community Volunteer Awards which celebrate the achievements of some of the city’s many volunteers. She was acknowledged for her dedication as a player, under 13s coach, committee member and first-aid officer. “Emily is an outstanding 21-year-old who has demonstrated dedication in her volunteer roles,” the judges comments said. “Since 2016 … she has been actively involved in supporting the Net-Set-Go skills development program for four to seven year-olds, and has regularly served as the first-aid officer. “She has demonstrated conscientiousness in her support of young players and made an impact with her ideas on marketing to young people.” Emily told Star Weekly she was proud to have been volunteering at her club since 2007. “I was down at the courts so much that the association just had me involved in more and more things,” she said. She gives up her Saturdays and Thursday nights for her coaching duties and a few meetings here and there. “I‘ve always loved playing netball and I love seeing the enjoyment that the girls get from playing and forging those relationships like I did. I also love to watch the up-and-coming stars of the game.” Emily is completing a bachelor’s degree in exercise and sports science at Deakin. Details: wyndham.vic.gov.au/cvawards

Wyndham Park taking shape By Esther Lauaki Improved summer outdoors fun in the heart of Werribee is the sunny prospect as work progresses on Wyndham Park. With the redevelopment on track for completion in November, mayor Mia Shaw says the $13 million project will transform the park into a buzzing space for the entire community. “This $13 million Wyndham council project will see the park become home to a large space to host events, play spaces, seating, rest areas, barbecues, shelters, and drinking fountains,” Cr Shaw said. The works will revitalise the under-used space between the Werribee Bicentennial Bridge, off Comben Drive, and the park’s entrance at Werribee Street. Included will be: • A major events lawn just past the Wedge Street bridge for up to 5000 people for markets, festivals, informal ball games and other social sports. • A playground featuring a 12-metre play tower, giant slide, spinning equipment, double flying fox, adventure rope course and swings. • A children’s nature play space with a magical forest theme near the Werribee Bicentennial Bridge, designed to cater for children with autism. • Picnic facilities, including barbecues, tables, chairs and shade structures. • A nature trail and fitness loop. • Lighting and toilets.

“Cycling and walking paths will also be improved as part of this project and lighting will be increased and upgraded to improve perceptions of safety,” Cr Shaw said. “August will be a busy month for this project, with the adventure play tower being installed at the park. I have no doubt that this will be one of the most popular attractions of the new and improved Wyndham Park.

“In November, we’re looking forward to the artwork being installed on site … this will be a key feature of the park, paying tribute to the local area. “We are opening up views of the park so the residents and visitors can make the most out of this beautiful asset, increasing visitation is a part of our mission to make the Werribee City Centre more vibrant.” The state government has chipped in $3.2 million towards the project, with the rest coming from Wyndham council. Demand soars at revamped library By Esther Lauaki Point Cook library is proving to be a resounding hit in the community. The library has welcomed more than 220,444 people through its doors since reopening after an upgrade last year. In that time, 430,572 items have been borrowed and nearly 15,000 people have attended its programs. Wyndham learning city portfolio holder Josh Gilligan said that the new and improved

library was part of the overall $5.2 million redevelopment of the Point Cook Community Learning Centre. “Since the Point Cook Library reopened, books, DVDs and other items have been flying off the shelf and the feedback from

the community has been overwhelmingly positive,” Cr Gilligan said. “Less than a month after reopening in September last year, 52 per cent of our collection was out on loan at the one time, including 80 per cent of our picture books. “Our busiest month ever was in May this year, where we saw 27,298 people through the door. To meet the demand and interest in learning at our libraries, two new programs were introduced for adults – craft and conversation and Language Café.”

Cr Gilligan said the Language Café had been so popular that a second weekly session was added. “We continue to make learning vibrant and interactive,” he said. “One of the enhancements we’ve made since reopening the doors is the installation of a mural in the children’s book area featuring artwork and text from the picture book Wide Big World, written by Maxine Beneba Clarke.” Details: wyndham.vic.gov.au/venues/ point-cook-library

A reader with top drive Makaira is one of those kids who takes a book everywhere she goes. The Point Cook 11-year-old is Australia’s top MS Readathon fundraiser for the fifth year running, having read more than 2000 books and raised nearly $40,000 to date. Makaira, who is in grade 6, has already raised $3300 this month. Her mum Rebecca Muscat, who was diagnosed with MS after Makaira was born, said she “couldn’t be prouder” of her daughter. “She’s been doing it every year since she was in prep,” Ms Muscat said. “It’s the cause and raising the money that she enjoys most. She says she just wants to help me. “I’m always tired, tripping. I get light disturbance, pins and needles. “It’s amazing that she wants her mum to be better.” The Muscats are avid Richmond football club supporters and Makaira’s favourite book is Rabbit’s Hop by premiership player Alex

Rance. Makaira’s readathon efforts have helped make her school, Lumen Christi Catholic Primary School, one of the nation’s top MS Readthon fundraisers. MS Limited head of individual giving Natasha Duncan said the readathon was an important fundraiser that provided families quality time together without being overshadowed by the pressures of having MS. “Every school has a connection to someone with MS, like Makaira’s mum, and every year the readathon helps raise funds for those families,” Ms Duncan said. A big fan of an epic ride By Esther Lauaki Richard Hawkey is gearing up to conquer a huge journey for the 10th time. The Point Cook cyclist will once again take on the Great Victorian Bike Ride, an annual regional ride that spans 10 days and more than 600 kilometres. Participants in the November event can choose from five-day and 10-day riding options to complete the journey from Robe, South Australia, to Torquay through coastal and forest landscapes including Limestone Coast, the Great Ocean Road and the Great Otway National Park. Hawkey, 75, said he is riding up to three times a week in training for the ride, which starts on November 22. “It’s fantastic being able to ride around on the country roads and look around at the sites on a bicycle instead of driving along – there’s nothing quite like it,” he said. He took up riding by necessity as a youngster but does it for leisure now. “My mother didn’t hold her driver’s licence until I was about 19, when I could drive on my own, so I used to ride to school when I was a kid,” Hawkey said. “Now the kids just don’t do it – they get taken everywhere in the car. “Father Christmas brought my wife and I bikes in 2006 and we decided it was fantastic riding around town … I ended up joining a Council of the Aging riding group that year.” The longest leg of the Great Victorian Bike Ride will be about 100 kilometres and Hawkey said his goal is to “keep up with the kids”. “I just need to get up each morning and ride,” he said. “Just being able to do it is a big accomplishment for me.” Details: bit.ly/2rE8wbS

New sports pavilion opens The final piece of an $11 million sporting hub at Williams Landing Boulevard Reserve is complete. Construction on the $4 million pavilion at the reserve was officially opened on Monday [August 26]. Wyndham sports development portfolio holder Peter Maynard said the pavilion had a community space, kitchen, changerooms, storage for sports equipment and a 131-space carpark. “This pavilion will provide essential facilities for sports teams and a meeting space for the wider community,” Cr Maynard said. “This $4 million Wyndham City project was made possible through a Victorian government $1.9 million grant as part of the Growing Suburbs Fund.” The first stage of the reserve, including two ovals, six tennis courts, a children’s playground and cricket nets, was completed in 2017. “In that time the reserve has been enthusiastically embraced by the Williams Landing community,” Cr Maynard said. “It has led to the creation of several new sporting clubs, including the Williams Landing soccer, cricket and tennis clubs, which are going from strength to strength.” Cr Maynard said Williams Landing was a fast-growing community, almost tripling in size in the past eight years, from 3200 residents in 2011 to 9350 people this year. Top service honoured Fire, police and paramedic crew members were the toast of the town at the annual Wyndham Emergency Services dinner last week. Wyndham council honoured frontline emergency service men and women at Encore Events Centre. Safer communities portfolio holder Kim McAliney said the council was delighted to host 175 members from the region’s emergency services. “We have teams of emergency services crews working around the clock to protect us and be there when we need their assistance,” she said. “Emergency services staff see us at our most vulnerable and often witness traumatic events.

“They all too often face abuse from people they are trying to help, so I urge Wyndham residents to respect emergency service workers when they are trying to do their job.” Wyndham’s emergency services teams have in the past six months received 30,000 triple-0 calls for the ambulance, fire and police. “Listening to the emergency services workers speak at the event about what they do on a daily basis just reinforced how lucky we are to have such dedicated people taking care of our safety,” Cr McAliney said. Game on for director By Goya Dmytryshchak Seaholme director Daina Reid has received her first Emmy nomination for The Handmaid’s Tale, up against formidable rivals including Game of Thrones. Reid, whose previous work includes Romper Stomper, The Wrong Girl, Offspring and Sunshine, will fly to the US next month for the awards. Her nomination for most outstanding directing for a drama series is for The Handmaid’s Tale ‘Holly’ episode, which features Oprah Winfrey as the voice of resistance radio station, Radio Free America. The Handmaid’s Tale is set in a totalitarian state known as Gilead where women like June, played by Elisabeth Moss, are known as handmaids and forced to bear children. “There is nothing in The Handmaid’s Tale that isn’t happening on Earth to a woman somewhere now,” Reid said. “In Saudi Arabia, women have only just been able to drive cars. “When the Taliban were in power, women could not be educated. “So, there is nothing that is fantastical – everything is happening or has happened to control women on Earth. That’s the alarming thing.” The momentous episode 11 features June pointing a double-barrelled shotgun at her enemies. “I think probably the most harrowing – God, you’d have to ask Elisabeth Moss – but it was hard with the gun scene with her and Serena Joy and Commander Waterford,” Reid said. “I think that was quite a challenging scene to do because that’s a very internal psychological decision to make; it’s a moral decision.” Reid is up against three Game of Thrones

episodes: The Long Night, The Iron Throne and The Last Of The Starks, and Killing Eve Desperate Times, Ozark Reparations and Succession ‘Celebration’. Reid, who moved to Seaholme more than a decade ago, hopes to get more work filming in Melbourne’s western suburbs. “When we first moved here, I directed

Very Small Business with Kim Gyngell and Wayne Hope, so we shot in this area,” she said. “After that, I did Rush here. Rush was based in Footscray, at the cotton mills, but we shot all around here because, without moving too far, you get a whole range of different looks.” The Emmy Awards will air in Australia on Foxtel on Monday, September 23 from 10am.

The first residents of the new Savana estate in Wyndham Vale have moved in. The Walkeden family is the first of about 2000 people expected to take up residence in the new $129 million residential development over the next three years. “We have lived within Wyndham Vale for the past six years and wanted to buy our first home in the same area to stay close to family and friends,” Mrs Walkeden said. “Savana was the perfect fit for our family as it’s close to everything we need – train and bus stations, Manor Lakes Shopping Centre and local p-12 school for our kids.” AVID Property Group state general manager Peter Vlitas said welcoming the first residents to Savana was a milestone for the 640-lot community. “Savana has been years in the making and it is rewarding to finally see our first residents settling in and buyers’ dreams become a reality,” Mr Vlitas said. A move by Werribee Historical Society to remove the name of Hoppers Crossing from local place names has been rejected by Werribee Shire Council. The society would like to see the name Tarneit apply to the area now delineated as Hoppers Crossing.

Plans for a multi-million dollar Disneyland style amusement park in Werribee have been scrapped. The proposed park was expected to be built at the planned $45 million Western Gardens Estate near the Princes Highway between Laverton and Werribee.

Residents of a Werribee estate are angry that a covenant has failed to protect their neighbourhood from unwanted development. A number of Fountain Court residents in Edward Park estate bought their land under the assumption the estate was protected by a covenant preventing dual occupancy development.

Sourabh Sharma is slowly getting his life back on track. On May 9, the 22-year-old was bashed on a Werribee-bound train between Aircraft and Hoppers Crossing stations about 9pm.

MY WYNDHAM Alaine Beek says she has always known that performance is her passion. The Werribee playwright talks to Esther Lauaki about her forthcoming shows. What’s your connection to Wyndham?

The Scrunch Test is a comedy drama based on my Scottish parents on Christmas Day. The Dress, which we plan to perform at Werribee Park, is set in the late 19th century and is essentially about the change in the fashion world at the time. In My Mother’s Words is a short play about the difficult relationship between a mother and daughter. This will be … part of Wyndham Theatre Company’s One Act Season Fractured, September 20 and 21.

I have lived here for many years. How long have you lived in the area? I came out from Scotland in 1971 and attended the then Werribee High School as a student. My family and I lived in Hoppers Crossing till I finished uni in 1981. Then I moved away and returned to live in Werribee with my husband and son in 2001.

What other hats do you wear in the Wyndham community?

What are you passionate about?

Tell us about your background performance/play writing.

in

I run Essence Productions – an independent theatre company. We run two plays at Werribee Park each weekend – both historical comedy dramas with some scary elements – and have done so for the past 16 years.

I’m on the Wyndham Council Arts, Heritage and Cultural Portfolio as a community advisory representative. I volunteer my time to Wyndham Theatre Company as their artistic director, I am co-ordinator for the Werribee Secondary College’s Drama Club. What’s the quirkiest thing about you? My love of Christmas and my continual search to find its magic.

(Joe Mastroianni)

Engaging audiences in performance and especially finding great historical and/or real stories to turn into theatrical performances. Working with youth is a huge high for me and always challenging and wonderful. Customer service and exceeding the expectations of customers. I also love working with my team – a group of highly skilled, talented artists who also have their feet well and truly on the ground, but have a great sense of humour and work ethic. Then there’s family – I’m totally passionate about my family and my gorgeous dog, Stella, and my dear friends. Oh, and movies – especially good scary ones.

What do you love about Wyndham?

I wrote my first short play when studying VCE drama as an adult in 1990. I was thinking I should get a degree in performing arts as that’s all I wanted to do, even though I have (and duxed) a business degree from RMIT. But after I finished VCE drama, I went on to do hands-on work with writing, acting, directing and singing.

Writing is the world I love to jump in to – like a deep, deep pool. The play I wrote in 2014, Point of No Return, won three awards in a playwright competition. It is now a full-length play that has toured to nine venues.

Domain chief executive Jason Pellegrino said the show would hopefully become a “must-watch” guide to understanding the property market. The program will cover an array of topics including localised property news, lifestyle tips and tricks, Domain Research house market analysis and real-life case studies. “Inspiring confidence in all of life’s property decisions is at the heart of what Domain does,” Mr Pellegrino said. We’re thrilled that through the strength and expertise of Nine in television production, we will now have a dedicated program to complement out digital and publishing footprint. “Whether Australians want to know the best way to increase the value of their property, get their house ready for sale, choose an agent, learn about the market or find out about the longer-term outlook for their suburb, Your Domain has it covered.” Your Domain launches on September 7 at 10am.

West Gate Freeway closure The West Gate Freeway will be closed in both directions between Millers Road and Williamstown Road on Saturday 31 August between 11pm and 7am and on Sunday 1 September between 10pm and 5am.

FOOD REVIEW

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir is looking forward to Cafe Sunshine’s future Consider the Sauce has observed, on the Cafe Sunshine Facebook page, a very nice looking falafel plate being spruiked. A dish that isn’t on the menu when we visit. And the dishes enjoyed on two previous solo visits by CTS senior are no longer on the current menu either. Cafe Sunshine and SalamaTea is a newish operation right in the heart of Sunshine. If they’re still finding their feet, some menu tinkering is for sure in order. Even better, I suspect new and surprising dishes will continue to pop up here with regularity, depending on the whims and passions of whoever is in the kitchen and what is available from the joint’s suppliers. This will suit anyone prepared to go with the freewheeling flow of the place. Perhaps not so much those who expect a menu to be a menu and that’s that. That would very much be their loss – for the food here is rather wonderful, provides a distinct point of difference in Sunshine and is ultra-affordable. As well, the place is also very much about providing employment and more for refugees and asylum seekers. The simple fare is largely of Persian nature, with eggs the big players, in a warm and welcoming cafe. And I’m told evening meals are in the soon-come category. Bennie likes his Persian breakfast ($13) very much – including the tahini dip flavoured with

CAFE SUNSHINE & SALAMATEA Address: 21 Dickson Street, Sunshine Phone: 0491 605 775 honey. This is a surprise to his father, as it tastes just like the halva he generally sneers at. Also included are fig jam, butter and a concoction of walnut and sheep feta. All this is teamed with Afghan flat bread sourced from the Afghan bakery that has opened up just around the corner on Hampshire Road. I share the same basket of bread – more is happily supplied upon request – with my Persian omelette ($15). This is simple and sensational – eggs and feta sent into the dizzy heights by the plethora of fresh mint and other herbs on the side. The vegan baklava ($3) does show the absence of butter – it’s drier than regular baklava – but is still enjoyable, as are our $3.50 cafe lattes.

19 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 28, 2019

Take a hands-on look at learning Party in the Precinct, one of the key events of this year’s Wyndham Learning Festival, won’t have balloons and fairy bread – although free sausages will be sizzling. What it will have, though, is lots of excited children and families having fun with hands-on learning and exploration. Wyndham Park Community Centre is set to become a school, but not as we know it. This ‘school’ revolves around the joy of lifelong learning, with activities staged for different interests and all ages. Speaking of school, the Public Pedagogies Institute’s Pop-Up School promises plenty of fun and laughter for young and old. The pop-up will show learning and teaching from Wyndham’s past, present and future. The future will be to the fore as party-goers use Virtual and Augmented Reality technology to explore the West Gate Tunnel Project. And there will be hands-on science and engineering activities at Deakin University’s interactive booth, plus a chance to explore STEM careers. The ‘learning’ continues with other activities that include a trivia quiz and arts and crafts, along with exploring health and wellbeing, and environment and sustainability. It will be a showcase of the many local services and organisations that support Wyndham Park Community Centre’s promotion of lifelong learning. As the centre’s manager Greg Ferrington says: “This event has grown every year and we expect this year to be even bigger and better. We invite everyone to come and see what’s happening.” Where: Wyndham Park Community Centre, 57 Kookaburra Avenue, Werribee When: Wednesday, September 4 Time: 1.30-5pm Party in the Precinct activities are provided by Wyndham Park, Manorvale and Woodville primary schools, Werribee Men’s Shed, Smith Family, Best Start in Life Alliance, GenU, Wyndham Park Community Centre, Maternal & Child Health Service, Heathdale, Wyndham Park and Manorvale kindergartens, Deakin Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment, and CPB John Holland JV, among others. Festival program guides are available at all Wyndham libraries and community centres or visit wynlearnfestival.org.au/events

Price: $820,000 - $860,000 Private sale

Just as the façade gives a distinct nod to the Victorian era, so do the indoor spaces of this flawlessly presented residence, with a handy south-side address adding further enticement – not to mention the glistening pool out back. The property is a minute by car from Princes Freeway entry and five from Watton Street’s eateries and shops; Werribee Secondary High and primary schools are two and four minutes respectively, while the station is seven. 22 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 28, 2019

Back to those Victoriana features. They include a corbelled archway, rosettes on high ceilings, dado rails, two-tone wall paint (soft green/cream) and cornices throughout highlighted in a green shade. Modern accompaniments include plantation shutters, on-trend lightfittings and gleaming honey-toned hardwood floorboards. The house has four fitted bedrooms, the main with bay window, walk-in robe and en suite. Others share a bathroom with white subway and rosy capping tiles.

A gracious carpeted lounge room, with period-style cast-iron fireplace and mantel, is open to the entry hall. Floorboards here flow through to the kitchen and dining area that abuts a carpeted sitting area. The large, well-designed kitchen with loads of white cupboards and bench space, has a breakfast counter and stainless-steel wall oven, gas cooktop and dishwasher. Ducted heating and cooling and security alarm are welcome inclusions. A gabled pergola, with decking underfoot

and laser screens adding polish, is fringed with a good wedge of lawn and curvaceous brick-edged tropically planted gardens. Nearby is a glass-fenced pool that’s bordered with pavers and sealed aggregate, the area given a holiday vibe from more of the same tropical plants. The property has a drive-through double garage and the block is about 735 square metres. Carole Levy

This one’s location couldn’t be handier, with Tarneit West Village shopping centre across the road, schools and childcare close by in all directions and Pacific Werribee five minutes down the road. The spacious, well-presented house has four fitted bedrooms with the same merbau floorboards that appear in two of the living zones. The main bedroom (with split-system) has a walk-in robe and en suite. Living areas include an open lounge room off the tiled entry hall and family and meals areas zoned via an island cavity wall. Décor is neutral, with varying accent walls. The kitchen, with servery and breakfast benches, has ample white panelled cabinetry, a dual-drawer dishwasher and 900mm cooker. Ducted heating, evaporative cooling, wood heater and alarm/intercom are included. A large gabled pergola faces a sizeable yard with several veggie boxes and there’s a double garage.

A perfect family haven, this double-storey house is within two kilometres of a variety of primary and secondary schools and Manor Lakes Central shopping centre. It has a large timber-lined lounge and dining room as well as an open-plan living zone integrating another meals area and the kitchen. This renovated space has smart glass splashbacks, a butler’s pantry and a range of further contemporary cooking conveniences. Bifold doors lead to an undercover entertainment zone outside as well as a large back and side yard with plenty of space for play. The main bedroom is light-filled and overlooks the front of the house and it also has a built-in robe and an en suite. Two other bedrooms are also on this level and share a generous bathroom, while the two upstairs have a large retreat or entertainment area with balcony. A gas wall heater and evaporative cooling are included.

Close to brand new, this architecturally bold residence is replete with the latest style trends and top-notch materials – the Greek Volakas marble in the kitchen is an example. This really is one for a discerning family to fall in love with. Of the four fitted bedrooms, there are two main suites – one downstairs with three-metre ceilings, stylish full-height joinery and a chic en suite. The other, up Tassie oak stairs, has walk-through robes and another sleek en suite (with the same black tapware and designer tiling used throughout), as well as access to a balcony. The large, swish shared bathroom has an oval freestanding tub and walk-in shower. A third toilet is downstairs. The style fest continues in the expansive living domain, where polished concrete floors add their gleam and the kitchen is quite beautiful. It has a well-designed butler’s pantry with dishwasher, an island bench topped with that marble, stunning seamless joinery in glossy black and matte timber-grain, an induction cooktop and underbench oven. The laundry is gorgeous, with masses of storage, a black undermount sink and designer tiling. Large glass sliders open to a timber deck and established plantings in boxes, while the double garage has internal access. This desirable property, on the favoured south side of town, is within walking distance of Werribee River’s bike/walking tracks, schools and the station. 23 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 28, 2019

New sludge Drying Pans Information from Melbourne Water

Growing demand The population in WTP’s catchment area is growing. This means more sewage is entering WTP and there is a greater demand on its infrastructure. For Melbourne Water to continue to reliably operate WTP, and to ensure the protection of public health and the environment, additional infrastructure is required.

Processing and drying sludge is an essential part of the sewage treatment process. At WTP sludge drying is through the use of large pans. Sludge drying pans use gravity, wind and heat directly from the sun to dry sludge. They are an effective low-cost option for drying sludge. WTP is planning to construct an additional set of sludge drying pans to keep up with increasing sludge generation which is a result of population growth in the catchment area.

Wasteful Bees put pressure on themselves in title race

Lisandro Paz rues one of a number of missed opportunities that Werribee City had on Saturday. (Luke Hemer)

Werribee City is ruing the game that got away. The wasteful Bees are feeling sick to the stomach after inexplicably leaving two points on the table in a 1-1 draw with Moreland Zebras in a crucial NPL Victoria 2 west battle of the contenders at Galvin Park on Saturday. Bees coach Sergio Sabbadini could not believe the amount of gilt-edged scoring opportunities his team frittered away in a game that could have seen them move to equal top of the ladder with two rounds to play. Instead, the Bees are stuck in third spot, two points behind St Albans Saints and the Zebras, and kicking themselves for the bevy of missed chances. “I thought we played close to the perfect game to be honest,” Sabbadini said. “The defence was solid all day, the midfield was great and the strikers created havoc. “The only thing that was lacking was the converting of chances.”

Werribee City trailed in the 11th minute after an opportunistic goal from prolific Zebras striker Thomas Barforosh. Barforosh quickly pounced on a loose ball and trickled a mistimed shot past the goalkeeper. “That was probably their only shot in the first half,” Sabbadini said. Werribee City hit back from the penalty spot in the 37th minute. Takanori Nishimoto got out of his sick bed to play his part for the Bees and it was significant as he drew a penalty when he was taken down by the goalkeeper. Jake Butler stepped up from the spot and fired in the equaliser. The second half was total frustration for Werribee City. Multiple promising chances went by the wayside. Aside for his own team’s inept finishing,

Devils taste grand victory By Lance Jenkinson One win is all the Werribee Devils need to secure the Big V Basketball women’s state championship crown at their first attempt. The Devils know closing out the series on the road will be the hardest ‘W’ to get after taking care of business on their home court to hold a 1-0 lead over Keilor Thunder in the best-of-three grand final series. A runaway 77-64 game one victory at Eagle Stadium in Werribee last Saturday night will give the Devils plenty of confidence for the remainder of the series. Devils caretaker coach Corey Michailidis and his team is fully aware of the threat a backs-to-the-wall Thunder will pose, especially with games two and, if required, three, scheduled for Keilor Basketball Stadium. “Everyone knows the job is only half done,” Michailidis said. “I was really pleased to see the awareness of that in the locker room. “Everyone was happy to get the first game under the belt, but we emphasised from the outset, don’t underestimate any player on their roster. “They’ve got a deep roster, they’re well coached and at home, they’re going to bring a big crowd, so you never know what’s going to happen.” Could you blame the Werribee supporters if they were getting a little bit excited after the game one performance of their team? The Devils were not only firing on all cylinders on offence, but they locked down well on defence. It was a strong all-round game worthy of a series lead. “We were very happy, not just to put up 77, but more importantly keep Keilor to 64,” Michailidis said. “They’re a great offensive team, so to keep them to 64, we were very proud of that.” Import Alisia Jenkins has been a huge addition for Werribee this season. Playing under duress after being struck down with flu during the week, Jenkins produced one of her gutsiest performances in a Devils uniform. Not only did Jenkins provide a much-needed 22 points and 14 rebounds, but she limited the impact of Keilor import Erin Bollmann, the favourite for the league MVP. “The Bollmann-Jenkins match up was the one that everyone was looking forward to,” Michailidis said. “Credit to Jenkins, she’s been battling the flu all week, so she didn’t train at all and has been resting, but we started her on Bollmann and I thought she did an excellent job. 40 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 28, 2019

Werribee Devils import Alexyz Vaioletama leaps over Keilor Thunder defender Genna Anderson. (Luke Hemer)

“I know she [Bollmann] still dropped 25 points, but I thought we made it quite difficult for her, so I was quite proud of Jenkins for that.” Maxine Allan, marking dangerous Keilor shooter Aneta Bandilovski, and Sarah Elsworthy, facing the explosive Thunder guard Ellen Kett, excelled in their defensive assignments.

Georgia Tauschke provided some great off-ball defence to make an impact for the Devils. Offensively, Werribee shared the load and genuinely enjoyed each other’s success. Game two will tip off at Keilor Basketball Stadium on Saturday at 7.30pm, with a possible game three tipping off at 2pm on Sunday.

Sabbadini also felt like his team could have got a second penalty in the game. “We had a penalty for handball waved away and that was a definite penalty,” he said. “Everyone saw it except the referee. “You’ve just got to take it I guess.” Tyler James and Brad Murray heavily influenced the game in the midfield for Werribee City. Daniel Petrov and Sam McCall were standouts in defence. The title race is not over for Werribee City, but they face a must-win game against league leaders St Albans Saints at Churchill Reserve on Sunday. “It’s all still to play for,” Sabbadini said. “There’s two games to play and funny things happen in football. “We’ll just keep plugging away.” Lance Jenkinson

Warriors ready for women’s football action Inaugural Hoppers Crossing women’s football coach Mick Koropeckyj has been overwhelmed by the interest and excitement generated by the newly formed team. The Warriors will push ahead with their long overdue introduction of senior women’s football ahead of their entry into the WRFL Women’s competition in 2020. Since he was unveiled as coach, Koropeckyj has been inundated with players and sponsors wanting to get on board and the fan base is growing by the day. “The feedback that we’ve had has been astronomical,” he said. “It’s not just the people around the team, everyone around the club is excited as well. “We are the missing piece of the puzzle at the club.” Koropeckyj has been involved with Hoppers Crossing as a club sponsor, junior coach and parent. His passion for the women’s game stems from his talented daughter Kayla. Koropeckyj believes the atmosphere around women’s teams is “more like a big family” with the way the players react to one another and the love they show for the game. Koropeckyj wants to build a competitive team at Hoppers Crossing from day one. He is putting the call out to both new and established players to join the Warriors. An information session will be held at the Hoppers Crossing Sports Club on September 4 at 7pm, while pre-season will begin on November 11. Meanwhile, Werribee Centrals were the big winners on the opening weekend of the WRFL women’s finals, eliminating Point Cook Centrals in a 41-point win. As the minor premier, Manor Lakes had a free pass to week two, but its second semi-final date with Spotswood was set for Pennell Reserve on Saturday morning. The cut-throat semi-final between Werribee Centrals and Caroline Springs will be played at Pennell Reserve on Sunday morning. Lance Jenkinson

Western United’s dazzling A-League debut

Western United’s Alessandro Diamanti and Caroline Springs George Cross’s Alex Dimond compete for the ball. (Luke Hemer)

Western United has lift-off thanks to a 4-0 victory over Caroline Springs George Cross in its first pre-season friendly at City Vista Recreation Reserve on Thursday night. The A-League’s newest club faced stern resistance in the first 35 minutes before young striker Valentino Yuel broke the deadlock with a powerful headed goal. Yuel was the beneficiary of a centimetre-perfect cross from United’s marquee import, Alessandro Diamanti. The longer the game went on, the greater the Western United threat became. As the Caroline Springs George Cross players started to tire, holes opened up in their defence and United was able to break through four times. Connor Pain doubled the United lead just before half-time with a tap-in. It was a well-deserved goal for Pain, who had worked tirelessly on the left wing in the first half. The third goal was one for the locals to savour. Youngster Dylan Pierias, a Caroline Springs resident who got his start at Keilor Park in the

juniors, fired in a jaw-droppingly fearsome shot that gave the goalkeeper no chance. Apostolos Stamatelopoulos put the icing on the cake of a four-goal win when he pounced on a goalkeeping error for an easy goal. At this stage of the pre-season, the result does not usually matter, but when you want to make a good first impression in front of 3267 spectators, there is a little bit more to play for. Western United coach Mark Rudan was particularly impressed by his team’s ability to transfer what they learned from study sessions and training track and apply it on the pitch in their first ever competitive game. “You never know how players are going to take all the messages and instructions that we’ve given them in an official game capacity,” Rudan said. “For the majority of the game, the attitude was good, the effort was certainly there and their discipline was really good as well.” But Rudan believes the team only scratched the surface of the style of play he wants implemented for the A-League season. “We make no apologies about the demands

Tigers tough it out By Lance Jenkinson While the rest of the finalists were running rings around inferior opposition, Werribee Districts received a tough pre-finals test from an improving Sunshine Kangaroos in the Western Region Football League division 1. The Tigers eventually prevailed by 48 points at Soldiers Reserve on Saturday, but gained a sufficient amount of competitive passages from the Kangaroos to make it a worthwhile warm-up game for the finals. “They’ve had a year where they’ve known they weren’t going to play finals footy from early on, but they keep having a crack,” Tigers coach Chris Gilham said of the opposition team. “Today they didn’t go away, that’s for sure. “We always felt like we had the upper hand in the contest and always thought we were going to win, but they definitely didn’t shy away from the contest or throw it in. “It was a hard-fought victory in the end.” Werribee Districts had a flaw exposed during the game, which was rectified at half-time. The Tigers were getting beaten badly at the stoppages and Gilham had to put some measures in place at the long break to improve the situation. “They probably had control of the stoppages,” Gilham said. “Especially in the first half, they were all over us A lot of our offensive stuff was coming off the half back. “We had to knuckle down around the stoppages because if your whole scoring method is out of the back half, you’re going to struggle. “I brought it up after half-time and we got more control around the ball. “It gave our forwards a chance to get a score.” Nayef Hamad and Bailey Siwek provided the solutions for Werribee Districts with their drive through the middle. Dillon Viojo-Rainbow got more dominant around the stoppages the longer the game wore on. The Tigers eventually broke the game open with a nine goals to five final quarter. Oscar Junker was a constant threat in attack for Werribee Districts with four goals, while Chris Molivas added three. The Tigers will face cross-town rivals Hoppers Crossing in a mouth-watering elimination final at Avalon Airport Oval on Sunday. Hoppers will enter the game on the back of a 218-point win over wooden spooners Albion. The qualifying final will be contested by Spotswood and Deer Park at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday, while minor premiers Altona will get a free pass to the second week

we place on our players,” Rudan said. “That’s just one [game] and we want to build on that and keep progressing.” You could not wipe the smile from the face of Western United midfielder Josh Cavallo, a former Melbourne City youth player, after the game. The 19-year-old could not believe the amount of green and black in the crowd. “I was surprised by the turnout tonight – I was really impressed,” he said. “It was great to get all the fans behind us.” Western United chief executive officer Maurice Bisetto ticked off a successful night, enjoyed it for a few hours and got back to work in preparation for United’s next pre-season friendly – against Preston Lions at City Vista Recreation Reserve on Thursday at 7pm. “We don’t want to be a one-hit wonder – we want to have albums, we want to have a history and we want to leave a legacy,” he said. “I’ll be driving home tonight thinking how we can make next week better and the week after better.” Lance Jenkinson

Werribee Centrals will be forced to cash in the double chance it earned during the GDFL Smiths Holden Cup season after slipping up in the first week of the finals. The Centurions went down by five points in a nail-biter to Bannockburn at St Albans Reserve on Saturday. The Nick Smith-coached Centurions led by four points at half-time, but lost their grip on the contest when they conceded seven goals to three in the third quarter. The Centurions will face Inverleigh in a cut-throat semi-final at St Albans Reserve on Sunday.

Netball

Werribee Centrals will kick-start its GDFL Netball finals campaign in a semi-final against Thomson at St Albans Reserve on Saturday. The Centurions had the luxury of sitting back and watching the other four finalists battle it out in week one of the finals. In their two regular season meetings, Werribee Centrals claimed victory in both games, but their most recent encounter was decided by just four points.

Soccer

Hoppers Crossing has been dislodged from top spot in the Football Victoria men’s state league 2 north-west. The Reds have drawn their past four away games, equating to eight points lost on the trips. A nil-all draw with Geelong Rangers at Myers Reserve on Saturday has left the Reds one point off top spot with two games to play. The Reds will be looking for their first away win since June 22 when they travel to Westgate for a crucial game on Saturday evening.

Captain Lucas Rocci has become the Western Jets first Morrish Medal winner for best-and-fairest in the NAB League. Rocci, a star across half-back, took out the highest individual honour in the competition with 17 votes, three clear of Sandringham captain Ryan Byrnes. Rare returns for car classic By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Australasia’s premier annual exhibition of rare, classic, collectible and significant cars and motorcycles will celebrate its 10th event this year, with dates confirmed for October 11 – 13. Motorclassica will once again be staged at Melbourne’s world heritage-listed Royal Exhibition Building, its home since the inaugural event of 2010. This year’s Motorclassica 2019 will have an anticipated entry of 150 vehicles for 2019 on the polished wooden boards of the Royal Exhibition building. Outside will be the club-based displays known as Club Sandwich, which will see a further 200 cars and motorcycles on show, alongside 30 exotic modern supercars from Lorbek Luxury Cars. Significant automotive milestones will include 100 years of the Bentley marque, as well as Alvis, and contrasting with those British brands, a century of the innovative French maker Citroen. Arguably the most recognisable car in the world, the Mini, will be honoured for its 60 years while, by contrast, so too will Abarth, an Italian tuner feted for its performance modifications to Fiat and Lancia models over the past 70 years. Increasingly collectible, Japan’s often unheralded role in the global development of the modern sportscar will also be recognised at Motorclassica with a specially curated tribute. On the Motorclassica central stage, a series of special guests and industry experts will entertain, educate and advise show-goers on all aspects of the automotive lifestyle and makes of vehicles.
