Racist graffiti attack By Esther Lauaki Police are investigating after racist slurs and nazi symbols were scrawled across walls at a Werribee community centre. Werribee police were called to the council-owned Wayaperri House at 8.50am on August 5. Police said the Duncans Road building was daubed with graffiti and windows and doors were smashed. The graffiti, which included Nazi symbols and racist slurs, was quickly removed by Wydham council last week. City operations director Stephen Thorpe said the council would work with the investigating police. “Council is currently getting quotes to repair the damage to the windows,” Mr Thorpe said.

Formulas for the future A love of learning science will be encouraged in a city-wide competition. The Young Scientist of Wyndham competition is open to students in years 7 to 12. Entrants – who can enter as individuals or pairs – are invited to submit project ideas around the theme of making a better tomorrow for Wyndham. Entrants will then create a model or installation and a presentation, based on their idea – whether it is robotics, aeronautics, sustainable living or another topic. On the final day of the competition, September 1, short-listed entrants will be invited to appear in front of a panel of judges with their models and presentation. A maximum of six entries per school will be permitted. The last date for entries to be submitted is August 31. The judging criteria will be based on innovation, communication, creation and presentation of the project in line with a better future for Wyndham. Recent anti-graffiti campaigns have been bearing fruit, with the council reporting a 25 per cent reduction in graffiti in the past 12 months thanks to education programs, rapid removal and engagement with local youths. Safer communities portfolio holder Kim McAliney said earlier this year that the council took graffiti vandalism seriously and worked closely with Victoria Police, schools, residents and businesses to reduce graffiti in the municipality. “We aim to remove illegal graffiti as quickly as possible to keep our city looking neat and tidy and also to discourage other vandals from adding their tags,” Cr McAliney said. “One of the initiatives that is proving successful is a targeted early intervention anti-graffiti program targeted at year 8 students, aiming to prevent incidents in the community.” Cr McAliney said that while education was key to preventing graffiti, the prosecution of perpetrators was also important. “Victoria Police successfully prosecuted a case of graffiti vandalism in Wyndham [in February] with the offender charged with a criminal offence and also ordered to pay compensation,” she said. State set to cut boat ramp fees By Alesha Capone and Goya Dmytryshchak The state government says it is working with Wyndham council on arrangements to remove boat launching and parking fees at the Werribee South Boat Ramp. The state government last week announced that Better Boating Victoria would scrap all boat launching and parking fees across Victoria by spring. The first boat ramps to have fees scrapped will be in Hobsons Bay, Port Welshpool, Bass

Coast shire council, Portland, Corinella, Lake Nagambie and Torquay. A state government spokesperson said: “We are currently working with Wyndham council about arrangements to remove fees at Werribee South Boat Ramp”. Parking at the Werribee South Boat Ramp is currently free as the casual parking ticket machines at the site have not been operational since early last year. In September, Star Weekly reported that Wyndham council was considering using a mobile app for motorists to pay for parking.

The Werribee South Boat Ramp includes six boat ramps (two shallow), a fish cleaning table and four floating pontoons. Pontoon No. 1 is currently unavailable due to damage. A combination of high winds

and a change to dredging patterns by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning deposited a large amount of sand under the pontoons at the ramp, which caused the damage. Last week, Premier Daniel Andrews and Fishing and Boating Minister Jaala Pulford visited the Warmies boat ramp at Newport to announce that parking and launching at boat ramps across Hobsons Bay were now free. “These fees cost Victorian families hundreds of dollars a year; we said we’d abolish them and we’re delivering,” Mr Andrews said.

Bogan bingo a blast from the past Here’s something grouse for youse. Seabrook Primary School will this month host Bogan Bingo to raise money to refurbish the school toilets. Organiser Kym Ham said she planned to dress up as her namesake from Kath & Kim. “We are raising funds so that we can refurbish toilets for the children,” Ms Ham said. “They’re pretty sad – they’re 21 years old and the school is a lot bigger than they ever

anticipated, so they get a lot more use. So, we decided, instead of trivia, to do Bogan Bingo for something a bit different and a bit fun. “It’s not necessarily all about bingo – it’s more about entertainment.” The adults-only event will have prizes for best bogan or ’80s costume, an air guitar competition, games and raffles. People are invited to bring their own nibbles and drinks.

Wyndham councillors have claimed more than $53,814 in expenses across a six-month period. The figure included more than $39,975 for travel expenses from January 1 to June 30, including Cabcharges, parking, public transport, airfares and accommodation. Overall, the municipality’s 11 councillors also claimed more than $4232 for training and conferences; more than $2340 for memberships to organisations; more than $883 for events and functions; and more than $738 for car mileage. The councillors with the highest expenses were Cr Kim McAliney on $15,728.44 and Cr Josh Gilligan on $15,700.25, followed by Cr Henry Barlow, $6561.96 and Cr Mia Shaw, $4883.32. Those to claim the least amount were Cr Aaron An and Cr Tony Hooper, who each claimed $359.94, and Cr Heather Marcus, who claimed $389.88. During the first six months of this year, Cr McAliney and Cr Gilligan participated in the Urban Development Institute of Australia’s study tour of the US. Cr Barlow and Cr Shaw visited Changzhou in China to attend a sister city official signing ceremony and associated formal activities. Cr Barlow attended the member meeting of the National Growth Areas Alliance in Canberra. Land grab for road upgrades By Alesha Capone Wyndham council has signalled its intention to acquire eight parcels of land in Tarneit and Truganina, in order to carry out three “high priority” road projects. At a public meeting last week, the council voted to amend the Wyndham Planning Scheme to apply a public acquisition overlay (PAO) “to facilitate the land acquisition for the projects and timely delivery of the infrastructure”. The council will have to seek permission

from the Minister for Planning to amend its planning scheme before acquiring the land for the road projects, which are: • The Woods Road and Dohertys Road intersection upgrade (affecting one parcel of land). • The Leakes Road duplication between Derrimut Road and Tarneit Road (four parcels of land). • The Boundary Road and Derrimut Road intersection upgrade (three parcels of land). A council report into the matter stated that it was “preferable to reach agreement

with landowners for the voluntary transfer of their land for road projects” but “some of the landowners have indicated that they do not wish to sell any part of their properties or are in dispute with council regarding land value”. “It is therefore thought appropriate in the interests of timely infrastructure delivery to package up the current projects and for the PAO option to be pursued,” the report stated. The report also stated that the intersection of Woods Road and Dohertys Road has been “identified as a dangerous intersection during peak times” and that traffic signals were

required to improve safety for motorists. It also stated that the Leakes Road PAO “may encroach or get close to some existing dwellings”. The report described the Boundary Road and Derrimut Road intersection as having “a poor crash history”. “Council has recently corresponded with the Department of Transport on the need to expedite an upgrade to this intersection, and the PAO proposed as part of this amendment is an important catalyst for further discussions and actions from state government in this regard,” the report stated.

Strings attached Melodies composed by Handel, Bach, Vivaldi and Brahms will be among the musical pieces performed at the upcoming String Festival at Westbourne Grammar School in Truganina. More than 100 students will take part in the annual school event later this month. Ensembles involved in the show include the school’s Senior Orchestra, Senior String Orchestra, Junior String Orchestra, Year 4 String Ensemble, Year 7 String Classes, Year 8 String Classes, Year 8 String Quintet, Year 11 Piano Trio and Cello Ensemble. Students will also perform musical pieces with such varied names as Rumba Time, Sea Fever Silver Forest and House of Smashed Fever, Avocado. The string festival is part of a packed musical timetable for Westbourne pupils this term. On Monday, August 26 pupils will take part in the Victorian School Music Festival there are also chapel recitals, a choral festival, a house

singing competition, VCE solo and group performances and the school musical, Seussical Jr: The Musical, during this school term. Zoo’s dinner time delight A carpenter who began working at Werribee Open Range Zoo this year has created an innovative device to help giraffes eat. Marcel Gordon, who is employed by the zoo’s operations department, has built a “giraffe feeder enrichment device”. The device, which recreates the way giraffes forage for food in the wild, consists of recycled Tupperware containers fixed onto a Perspex board. Holes allow the giraffes to manipulate the treats inside the containers – usually carrots and pellets – into their mouths, moving their tongues like they would when eating leaves from a thorny acacia tree. A tiny koala joey has been given a second chance at life thanks to staff at Werribee Open Range Zoo. The little koala was brought into the zoo by a wildlife carer about four weeks ago, after she fell from a tree in a blue-gum plantation logging area. In the wild, at 150 days old and weighing less than 500 grams, the koala joey would usually still have been in her mother’s pouch. A veterinarian (not from the zoo) made the difficult decision to euthanise the joey’s severely injured mother. Werribee Zoo vet nurse Jess Rice said that when the koala joey was first brought in, it was unclear whether she would survive. “She was just at the stage where she would have been starting to poke her head out of mum’s pouch,” Ms Rice said. “Joeys that size don’t have a good survival rate in care.” After the koala joey was x-rayed, staff at the zoo put a cast on her fractured arm. The native animal needed around the clock care, including feeding with a marsupial milk replacer every four hours. Ms Rice also introduced the koala joey to a temporary surrogate mum in the form of a stuffed toy. Thanks to the care of zoo staff, the little koala started putting on weight and earlier this month, she was deemed strong enough to be released back to a specialist wildlife carer. “It will be more than a year before she’s old enough to be released into the wild, so she needs to be with a carer with the resources to take care of her for that long,” Ms Rice said. “Koalas are just one of the native animals we have to be so careful to take care of in Victoria and that we have the privilege of helping at Werribee Open Range Zoo.”

Spotlight on worker safety By Alesha Capone A retailer has been fined $150,000 without conviction after a truck driver’s foot was crushed when his leg was run over twice at a Laverton North workplace. Spotlight Pty Ltd pleaded guilty in the Werribee Magistrates Court earlier this month to failing to ensure that the workplace and the means of entering and leaving it were safe. The court heard that the incident occurred as the driver walked along a marked pedestrian

area at the company’s distribution centre in Laverton North. The man was returning to his truck while a shipping container was being unloaded from it by a mobile straddle carrier. As the carrier moved forward, it struck the driver and its front wheel ran over his leg. A Spotlight employee saw the driver was trapped and signalled to the carrier operator, who reversed the transporter back over the driver’s leg. The driver’s left knee was dislocated, his ankle broken and his foot crushed in the

incident. His toe was amputated as a result. The court hard that Spotlight had made a number of changes at its distribution centre since the incident, including marking out designated loading zones, pedestrian exclusion zones, driver safety zones and re-marking the pedestrian path. The court heard the company also decommissioned the carrier and now employs a security officer at the entry point to the loading area, to direct truck drivers when they arrive. WorkSafe’s executive director of health and

safety Julie Nielsen described the Laverton North incident as “a terrible example of what can happen when mobile machinery and pedestrian workers mix”. “Unfortunately it is not an isolated example, and there have been many incidents involving machinery and pedestrians where workers have been seriously injured or even killed,” she said. “All employers must ensure machinery and pedestrians are adequately separated and that systems and processes are in place to protect workers at all sites.”

Police seek help over petrol thefts Police from the Wyndham Petrol Theft Reduction Team are seeking public assistance to identify the people in these images. During June and July, the team arrested 12 recidivist petrol theft offenders who have been charged with a combined 30 offences. Frog pond cash splash The frog pond at Westgrove Primary School in Werribee will soon be rejuvenated, thanks to a $2000 grant. School staff members successfully applied for the grant through the Teachers Initiative Program with Bank First. Representatives of Bank First visited Werribee earlier this month to present the school’s captains with a cheque. The frog pond rejuvenation project aims

to give Westgrove pupils a niche learning experience through transforming the site from a dried-up area to a sustainable frog pond oasis. A home run for reserve plans By Alesha Capone Plans for a new sports reserve in Point Cook include building a baseball and softball field, a 700-metre running track and a shared pavilion. Wyndham council last week endorsed a draft master plan for the Brookdale Road Reserve, on Saltwater Promenade. The draft master plan, which is available for public comment, proposes to build a four-hectare sporting reserve at the site,

across from Saltwater P-9 College and close to Saltwater Community Centre. Wyndham’s Sports Development portfolio holder Cr Peter Maynard said the idea to build a baseball and softball field – which will have the potential to host football, soccer and cricket

games – was based on community feedback the council received when creating the Wyndham Sports Strategy 2045. “Wyndham residents told council they would like a greater diversity of sports facilities in the municipality,” Cr Maynard said. “There are no baseball or softball fields in Point Cook, so this reserve will provide a new opportunity for residents to hit a home run. “The reserve also includes intergenerational fitness and play equipment, so grandparents will be able to join in on the fun.”

Plans for the reserve also include sports floodlighting; a shared pavilion for use by baseball, softball, cricket, soccer and other community user groups; car parking; and landscaping. According to the draft master plan, the estimated cost of building the reserve is between $7.2 million to $8.7 million. Happy baby bundles First-time parents at Werribee Mercy Hospital have been presented with free baby bundles. About 35,000 new parents each year are expected to receive the bundles, as part of a state government initiative at maternity hospitals in Victoria. The bundles, valued at $150, contain essentials to help guide families through the first few months and years of their child’s life and include a teething ring, nappy bag, safe sleeping bag, a cotton wrap, first-aid kit, baby sunhat, toothbrush and a grow suit. A booklet developed in collaboration with Raising Children Network provides information about child health, safety, learning and emergency contacts. Also included are picture books suitable for various stages of a child’s development – Baby Days by Nicola Philp, Ten Little Owls by Renee Treml, Puddle Hunters by Kirsty Murray and Karen Blair and Gumtree Buddies, a soft pram book produced by Tiger Tribe.

We set goals, discussed confidence and belief and confirmed with each other that he trusted my vast experience and recruiting knowledge, which pointed to his ability to deliver similarly high standard games at VFL level. The following week, in a highly physical and must-win game against Port Melbourne, Joel showed us what he could do. He kicked five goals in a best-on-ground performance. His courage to stand out and willingness to put

For far too long, inexperienced players who don’t believe they’re quite good enough to make it big have been hoping “time” will make results happen in the future. But time waits for no one – and someone else will jump into your spot and take over. After 15 years of going to the AFL draft combine, where young potential draftees are interviewed and assessed, I have found there are two distinct types of players that stand out. Those who think they can and those who hope they can. It’d be simple just to pick the former, but therein lies a problem – many gems would be missed if you didn’t also look closely at those in the quiet, doubting cohort. As coaches and managers, we must try to unlock their potential and help them reach their goals. By instilling confidence and showing the way forward, hand-in-hand together we can produce some truly startling results. Recently, Joel Bennett, a very good GFL player from Geelong West, came to play game No.15 for the Werribee Football Club in the VFL. His form had been vanilla – he just blended in and didn’t make any real statement or impression. I met him and we watched his game from the previous week. He said all the right things to make the uninitiated feel he was confident: “I’m ready to play a great game.” But deep down inside, he was hiding in his own shadow. We discussed the difference between playing at the lower grade and in the VFL – and where he saw himself within this high-grade team. We noted that he just played like he was happy to have a game and that he

We must develop Wyndham into a destination for all. What to do? Let’s highlight what we have. Let’s all join as one. Let’s refuse not to be noticed. A boring brown sign on the highway with a few names on it can’t be our best effort. Surely, we are better than this. Signpost the highway utilising colour and size to STAND OUT – let there be no half measures. Let’s develop dining, entertaining and fun use of the magnificent river. Let’s be brave and get out of the shadows – play the Big Game. Be an “A-grader”. At Werribee Football Club, we want to be community leaders and help our people in any way we can. Students dig deep Tarneit Senior College year 12 students have been doing their bit to help out in the community. Almost 160 students have spent five weeks working with seven organisations, many based in Wyndham. Among their community efforts, the Tarneit students have been knitting blanket squares for Knit One Give One, a not-for-profit organisation that donates knitted and crocheted items to premature babies, the elderly, homeless, refugees and residents of remote indigenous communities.

The students have also been helping to clean up Skeleton Creek and surrounding areas with Clean Up Australia; preparing meals for the Manor Lakes Food Bank; and working with children at Tarneit North Kindergarten to create an indigenous art mural to be displayed in an outdoor space at the pre-school. The Tarneit college students have also been visiting residents at the Mercy Place Wyndham nursing home to chat, perform music and play games. Alesha Capone

Werribee Shire Council on Monday night, elected Cr Mick Bloxham as its president for the coming year. Cr. Bloxham has represented the North Riding since 1972 after failing an attempt to enter council a year earlier.

East Ward councillor, Kevin Skehan, is Werribee’s fourth mayor. Cr Skehan, 56, was elected during a statutory meeting on Wednesday 9 August to replace retiring mayor Cr Bruce Comben.

The director of Port Phillip Prison at Laverton North has condemned what he called the “Chinese whispers” style of communication between prisons, authorities and courts. Mr Dave McDonnell told the Banner exclusively last week there were communication problems concerning the identification of prisoners at risk of self-harm or suicide across Victoria’s prison systems.

The future of Wyndham Council’s chief executive officer Peter Marshall is in doubt following Monday night’s council meeting. The Banner understands councillors have taken steps to dismiss Mr Marshall, who is 14 months into his term in the city’s top job.

I’ve lived in Wyndham Vale all my life. And how long have you worked at Notorious Espresso? For about a year. I used to be a customer. I’d come in every day for coffee, after finishing at my other job. At the time, there was no job going here, I just squeezed myself into the team!

What changes have you seen occur in Wyndham Vale since you were a child?

The customers are good, the environment here is the best work environment I’ve ever been in. With the staff, there’s no hierarchy, we all work together and we’re all friends inside and outside of work. I work here full-time, from 8am to 4pm. They’re the best hours to work.

It used to be empty, just paddocks everywhere. I lived across from Manor Lakes, when it didn’t even exist, and Wyndham Green was just getting started. There are just people everywhere now, it’s so busy.

How did you become a barista?

What would you change about the area, if you could alter one thing?

I sort-of just fell into it. I like working with people, and I was working in the city, for a caterer. One day they needed someone to fill in to make coffees and I said that I would do

Top tips to help renters feel more at home Despite tenure uncertainty, there are some cheap and effective strategies tenants can use to create a sense of home in a temporary space. One of the first mistakes is choosing furniture to fill a specific spot in your rental property. “Buy furniture items that you love, that you can move around with you, that work with different spaces,” is the first piece of advice from Julianne Bull from The Den Interiors. Bull identified sofas as common culprits. “A lot of the trendy ones are low and have a wide profile,” she says, which made them difficult to move and place in smaller rooms. She says renters should find out if they can hang artwork, as it adds a personal stamp. If not, oversized artworks can be leaned against a wall. “Leaning, rather than hanging, gives a contemporary edge.” Ms Bull said rugs were ideal for disguising a rental’s less appealing features. “Even with really ugly carpet, you can still lay a rug over it,” she explains. “It gives a focal point to the room. And for floorboards – rugs are fantastic, especially in the bedroom. “Indoor plants can serve a similar purpose. “The colour, the foliage is beautiful. They can be really helpful to hide really ugly things like heaters and air conditioners. “If there’s something you really want to disguise, put something really bright and colourful next it. The eye will be drawn to it.” Richard Misso from The Stylesmiths says lighting, curtains and blinds could be swapped out to improve a room.

Background Located in Werribee, the historic Western Treatment Plant (WTP) sustainably treats over half of Melbourne’s sewage while providing an internationally-recognised bird habitat. Growing demand The population in WTP’s catchment area is growing. This means more sewage is entering WTP and there is a greater demand on its infrastructure. For Melbourne Water to continue to reliably operate WTP, and to ensure the protection of public health and the environment, additional infrastructure is required. Processing and drying sludge is an essential part of the sewage treatment process. At WTP sludge drying is through the use of large pans. Sludge drying pans use gravity, wind and heat directly from the sun to dry sludge. They are an eﬀective low-cost option for drying sludge. WTP is planning to construct an additional set of sludge drying pans to keep up with increasing sludge generation which is a result of population growth in the catchment area. Local impact We will commence construction of these pans in late February 2020. The construction and future operation of these drying pans are expected to have no signiﬁcant impact on air quality and noise beyond the boundary of WTP. Werribee books finals spot with strong win over Hawks Werribee is locked in for a Victorian Football League finals spot after running out 25-point winners over Box Hill Hawks at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday. The Mark Williams-coached side will feature in the finals as a stand-alone club for the first time in more than 20 years. Young Werribee forward Jake Riccardi is excited by the prospect of playing in his first VFL finals series and believes the win over the Hawks will provide some belief and momentum for his side. “Them winning the flag last year and obviously being a good team for the last few years with a good system, to get a win like that at this time of year is very important for us,” he said. “The win came at a good time before finals and hopefully a bit of form is building now and we can finish off the year really strong.” Werribee will have the bye this weekend before facing arch-rivals Williamstown in the

last round before finals. While Werribee cannot break into the top four, it will be important for it to finish off the home-and-away rounds strongly with a home final on the line. “We’ve got the week off now, which will be good to freshen up a bit,” Riccardi said. “Then we’ve got Williamstown, which will be a tough game and then into finals after that.” Riccardi was full of praise for Werribee’s defensive unit after the victory over Box Hill. The Hawks have averaged 78 points per game this season, but were restricted by Werribee’s defence to just 51. “It’s a real credit to the back six,” Riccardi said. “They’ve been unbelievable all year. “You’ve got Dan Nielson, Ryan Hebron, Nick Coughlan and Max Spencer, they’re really good in the air, then you’ve got Dane McFarlane, Louie Pinnuck, Sods [captain Michael Sodomaco] and another couple of guys that just hold it down really well.”

Hudson Garoni made his Werribee debut, finishing with eight disposals, two marks and a goal. At one stage, Garoni, who played as a forward, had Hawks champion Jarryd Roughead assigned to him. “Roughead was one of their key backs,” Riccardi said. “It would’ve been a good experience for him to play on Roughy. “No one really got tips from Roughy, but he was willing to have a little chat here and there and make a few comments. “He plays the game the right way.” Michael Barlow was the undisputed best-on-ground for Werribee, racking up 42 disposals, 14 clearances, seven tackles and six inside 50s. Storm rises to the top By Lance Jenkinson Two brilliant goals from Manor Lakes full forward Kellee McIntosh has turned the Western Region Football League women’s minor premiership race on its head. The Storm moved to the top of the ladder after a thrilling four-point win in a low-scoring scrap over Caroline Springs at Howqua Reserve on Sunday morning. McIntosh stole the highlights reel with a running goal where she took three bounces in the wet and a dribbled a goal from the boundary. “They were great goals,” Storm coach Nathan Smithwick said. “They were remarkable goals in the weather.” McIntosh was the leading goalkicker in the competition with 83 goals in Manor Lakes’ run to the premiership last season. She has not been as prolific this season, though her 40 goals, including bags of eight, nine and 10, see her sitting in third spot in the rankings. A huge finals campaign could be on the cards for McIntosh. “She was really strong up forward today,” Smithwick said. “Her getting up to full fitness in the forward line is starting to terrorise some of the opposition.” This was certainly not a one-woman show for Manor Lakes. To knock Caroline Springs off top spot, it took all 22 players to contribute. “It was a great team effort,” Smithwick said. “They all deserved it, they all did their job and, to their credit, they got the result.” Manor Lakes captain Cara Dunshea and defender Lindsay Newton both staked a claim for best-on-ground honours. Dunshea thrived in the wet conditions, bossing her way to the ball in contested situations. Dunshea’s leadership is one of the Storm’s greatest assets and that was on full display once again. “She stood up strong in a big game,” Smithwick said. “She leads by example, she’s tough, nothing fazes her. “She’ll listen to anything the coaches ask her to do and she’ll do anything for her team and that makes her a great captain.” Newton could not be stopped at centre half-back. One of the best two-way players in the league, Newton was able to contain her opponent, while also offering drive out of defence. “They tried to tag her out of the game,”

Smithwick said. “They did with a little bit of effect but Lindsay was still one of the best players on the ground.” Rachel Court and Carly Riddock were outstanding in defence for Manor Lakes, helping restrict Caroline Springs to two goals. Yana Frontczak was the Storm’s other goalkicker, taking her season tally to 38 goals.

Smithwick was thrilled to come away with a victory that puts Manor Lakes into premiership favouritism. Manor Lakes will take on fifth-placed Point Cook Centrals in the final round at Howqua Reserve on Saturday evening. Bees need to find form to take title It’s go-time for Werribee City in the National Premier League 2 west competition. The Bees rollercoaster ride has gone on for too long and they have suffered by falling out of the top two. The good news is the Bees have four weeks to find their consistency and stake a claim for the title. Their up and down form in the second half of the season has not been enough to take their destiny out of their own hands. A stellar final month, starting with Saturday’s trip to Albury to face Murray United, could see the Bees in the top flight next season. “We’re just going through a bit of a rough trot at the moment,” Bees coach Sergio Sabbadini said. “Things just aren’t going our way. “If we win all four left, you’ve surpassed all of them [contending teams].” Werribee City had last weekend off for the catch-up round. It was a welcome mental break for the Bees after consecutive one-goal losses. The Bees still trained hard with five sessions to remain sharp between games. Sabbadini bemoaned a little bit of bad luck and some structural breakdowns for Werribee City’s consecutive losses to North Geelong Warriors and Langwarrin. “We had North Geelong pegged back in the whole second half, hit the post, just couldn’t get one to go in, while they had two shots on target the whole game and they score,” he said. “Last week [against Langwarrin], it was 2-2 and we had two excellent chances to score, one the goalie saved and the other hit the post and went out and then they long balled in the last minute and it goes in.” Sabbadini has faith that Werribee City can win the title from two points back from top two sides St Albans Saints and Moreland Zebras. The Bees still have to play the Saints and the Zebras in the run home, so it will provide a great chance for them to bridge the gap and potentially overtake them. Centrals poised to make the most of great timing Werribee Centrals have timed their run to perfection. The Centurions will enter the final round of the Geelong and District Football League home-and-away campaign needing only to beat winless Corio to secure a top-three finish and a finals double chance. A resounding 44-point victory over Inverleigh in the third-versus-fourth showdown at Inverleigh Reserve on Saturday propelled the Centurions above their opponents and into third place. It has taken the Centurions 17 weeks to break into the top three, an effort coach Nick Smith described as “massive”. “Considering where we were – we started the year 0-2 and after eight rounds we were sitting in seventh – to get into a position now where next week, as long as we beat Corio, we get that double chance, the boys were pretty rapt,” he said. “It would’ve been the loudest we’ve sung the song.”

It was the icing on the cake of Werribee Centrals’ 50th anniversary celebrations on Saturday. The Centurions did not have it all their own way – they were trailing by seven points at half-time. An incredible eight straight goals in the third quarter busted the game wide open. “The first half was a bit of an arm-wrestle and then we kicked eight goals to nothing in the third quarter,” Smith said. “All of a sudden, the game went from close to all over in one quarter. It was probably the best quarter of footy that we’ve played since I’ve been at the club. We felt like we were getting plenty of the ball and putting it into more dangerous spots. “We kicked a stack of really good crumbing, wet-weather goals.” Josh Sloan had another sensational game in the ruck for Werribee Centrals. caught the eye since crossing from WRFL club Manor Lakes mid-season because of his elite in-and-under work. “I can’t talk highly enough of what he’s brought to the group,” Smith said.

“He’s got the ability to win that first footy. If he gets in and gets the ball out to our leg speed on the outside, it’s a good combination.” The quick transference of play from the centre to the Werribee Centrals’ forward line gave small forwards Daniel Boyd and Daniel Skinner ample room to do what they do best. Boyd kicked a team-best three goals, while Skinner added two. “They’re both small forwards and they did a good job of finishing off the hard work of the midfielders,” Smith said. “We have a pretty simple game plan of where we want the ball to go … we just ask players to compete and bring it to ground. “Those two, in particular, were a bit too quick and a bit too smart for their opponents.” Werribee Centrals will host Corio in the final game of the regular season at Galvin Park on Saturday, with the first bounce at 3.30pm. The Devils opened their playoff campaign with a deflating loss to Keilor Thunder on August 4 and there were question marks over whether they could regain the spark from their impressive regular season. They answered those doubts in emphatic style with a 73-51 win over Hume City Broncos in a cut-throat semi-final at Eagle Stadium on Saturday night. Devils coach Reece Potter said the learning that came out of the week one finals loss was applied successfully in the Hume City game. “We did a great job of making sure we were the aggressor in the game,” he said. “We really dictated the way the game was played … we forced them into playing how we wanted them to play.” Werribee produced a defensive masterclass. After conceding 88 points a week earlier, the Devils held Hume City to just 51. “Hume are a quality team,” Potter said. “They’re talented, deep, very experienced and have been a very successful team for a number of years in the champ level. “For us to knock them off fairly comprehensively was a great result for our team and our club, considering we only just moved up to championship level this year.” Underlining the dominance of Werribee’s defence, Hume City imports BreAnna Brock and Azia Bishop combined for 49 minutes on court and only three points. Brock, who averages 19 points a game, landed a three-pointer and that was her only scoring play. Bishop, who averages 11 per game, was held scoreless. “I thought our team did a great job on their imports,” Potter said. “To keep their imports to three points is an unbelievable effort. “Defence was where the game was won and we did enough at the other end of the floor to get a strong win.” Sarah Elsworthy was huge for Werribee offensively at point guard. Elsworthy dictated the play throughout, finishing with 16 points, six rebounds and three assists. “She led from the front,” Potter said. “She got back to playing with pace and confidence. “She got us into offence with purpose and playing fast and putting Hume into a tough position.” Werribee import Alisia Jenkins is back to her best. MOTOR Nissan Pathfinder stays on pace By Alistair Kennedy, Marque Motoring

holders, six bottle holders, four 12-volt power outlets and a useful under-floor storage compartment behind the third row of seats for extra security. Maximum towing capacity is 2700 kilograms with the V6 engine, but just 1650 kilograms for the hybrid.

Nissan Pathfinder has been on sale in Australia since 1987, long before the term SUV was invented and vehicles of its type were simply called 4WDs. The current (fourth-generation) Pathfinder arrived here in 2013 with smoother styling and aimed at the suburban market. Subsequent upgrades, the most recent of which was in 2019, have made it more refined and safer, and with technology added. Pathfinder comes with the choice of a 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine or a supercharged 2.5-litre petrol/electric hybrid and either twoor four-wheel drive. The previous diesel alternative was dropped for the gen-four model. There are four equipment levels: ST, ST+, ST-L and Ti, with prices ranging from $43,390 for the Pathfinder ST V6 2WD through to $69,390 for the Ti Hybrid. In a sign of the times, the premium for equivalent hybrid models is a reasonable $3000.

Engines / transmissions

The petrol-only Pathfinders are powered by an upgraded 3.5-litre V6 engine, while the hybrid variants rely on a supercharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder unit plus a 15kW electric motor. Our test ST was fitted with the V6 petrol engine, which now delivers 202 kW of power and torque of 340 Nm at a very high 4800rpm. Its Direct Injection Gasoline system provides better wide-open throttle performance for improved fuel economy and lower emissions. All 2019 Pathfinder models are equipped with Nissan’s third-generation Xtronic continuously variable transmission with D-Step logic control, which simulates shifts in a stepped gearbox to suit drivers who won’t adapt to efficiency of CVT units.

Styling

While early Pathfinder 4WDs were quite square and rugged in appearance, the latest models have evolved into the typical, softer SUV style with smoother edges and sleeker profile. At the front is the distinctive Nissan design signature V-Motion grille and headlamps with boomerang-shaped LED daytime running lights. Alloy wheels are 18-inch in the ST, ST+ and ST-L. The Ti steps up to 20-inch units.

Interior

At just over five metres in length and nearly two metres wide, Pathfinder is large enough to fit seven seats in comfort and still provide 453 litres with all seats in place. This can expand to 1354 litres with the third row folded and 2260 litres with second and third rows down.

Pathfinder has the Nissan EZ flex seating system, with second-row seats reclining and sliding to provide extra leg room to third-row occupants. Another plus for those in the third row is that the 50/50 split row seats can also be reclined. Interior storage is excellent, with 10 cup

Following the 2019 upgrade, all Pathfinder models come with Emergency Braking with forward collision warning, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert and intelligent cruise control. Previous features include six airbags; stability and traction control; speed-sensitive door locking; tyre-pressure monitoring; rear cross traffic alert; blind spot monitoring; and IsoFix child

headphones, remote control and HDMI and USB ports for video playback.

Driving

The range-topping Pathfinder Ti has a new feature called Rear Door Alert, which reminds you to check if you’ve left someone behind.

Infotainment

Information display is through an embedded 8.0-inch colour touchscreen that is sharp and

easy to read. There’s Bluetooth phone and audio streaming with voice recognition that’s easy to pair. There are twin USB ports on the lower grades, three on the top-line Pathfinder Ti. The entry-level ST Pathfinder doesn’t come with satellite navigation, although it is standard on all higher-specced variants and also includes 3D mapping graphics. ST-L and Ti variants get a 13-speaker Bose premium audio system, while the Ti looks after rear seat passengers with a tri-zone entertainment system with wireless

With its large exterior dimensions, Pathfinder is a bit of a climb for smaller occupants, although the high driving position is a plus. It can be a bit of a handful to drive around town, especially in tight parking spaces. The extra power and torque is noticeable and the big SUV moves sharply from a standstill thanks to the use of a CVT automatic. On the open road, the added grunt together with firmer but not uncomfortable suspension and interior space make for a comfortable cruiser. Like most modern SUVs, Pathfinder is almost car-like in its refinement and general feel. Handling is reasonable, although with its relatively high centre of gravity, you can’t drive a Pathfinder as though it’s a car. Fuel consumption from the V6 Pathfinder is listed at 9.9 litres per 100 kilometres in 2WD models and 10.1 with 4WD. We averaged in the mid 11s in our ST 4WD.

Summing up

With more than three decades on the Australian market, Nissan Pathfinder is a tried and proven performer both on and off the road. Although it’s due for a new model, recent upgrades have added to its safety credentials and kept it up to date. Adding to the value equation, Nissan has gone with the industry flow by increasing both the time and distance of its standard warranty to five years and unlimited kilometres.
