A magical journey The worlds of two star-crossed lovers will collide in Good News Lutheran College’s Once on this Island. A cast of 40 grade six to year 12 students from the Tarneit college are honing their roles in the musical before they take to the stage at Altona City Theatre on August 9 and 10. Director Christine Taylor said the show reflected the college’s diversity. “Our school community is very multicultural,” she said. “We decided to choose a musical that would celebrate everyone’s background and show how we are all connected through love. “The show is about a peasant girl, Ti Moune, who is sent on a journey by the gods of her island to follow her heart to a wealthy boy, Daniel, in hopes that their love will unite their two different worlds.” Year 10 student Takarah Williams will play Ti Moune, with year 11 student Ryan Hanna as Daniel. New life for old Bridge By Esther Lauaki Wyndham’s iconic Bridge Hotel is set for a swish makeover. The council-owned hotel, which has been vacant for almost two years, will undergo a major internal revamp before opening to the public early next year. The council announced last week that the MoL Pub Group had been selected as the new operator of the 93-year-old Watton Street hotel. Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw said the new operators were selected as they best aligned with the council’s vision for the city centre. “We want residents who are looking to socialise to stay in Wyndham, not leave our borders for Melbourne,” Cr Shaw said. “That’s why we’re keen to see the Bridge Hotel revamped, creating a fresh, exciting and

contemporary venue for our community to enjoy. “We’re looking forward to the MoL Pub Group creating an experience at a venue that locals and visitors are proud to frequent, with a reputation as an authentic and quality

destination.” The MoL Pub Group also operates Marquis of Lorne in Fitzroy, Union House in Richmond, and Mount Erica Hotel in Prahan. Cr Shaw said the vision for the site would pay tribute to the building’s heritage. “The Bridge Hotel has been on Watton Street since 1926, and is an important piece of Werribee’s history,” she said. “The plans for this site build on that history, reactivating it as a well-visited venue. “There are already a range of fantastic businesses operating in Werribee, and the reactivation of the Bridge Hotel will bring more people into the area, complementing the existing venues in the Werribee City Centre. “We know that a vibrant night economy is what helps with economic uplift as well as increased liveability, and this project will do

just that.” In 2016, Wyndham council splashed out more than $10.5 million to purchase the Bridge Hotel site and the former Werribee Toyota site, which has since been turned into a carpark. MoL Pub Group director Matt Vero said the group was looking forward to the site being reactivated. “We are very excited to be a part of the Wyndham community and look forward to bringing the Bridge Hotel back to its former glory,” Mr Vero said. “We are currently working on finalising our plans for the venue. What we hear is people are looking for an inner city offer that’s close to home, and we’re confident we can live up to these expectations.” Refurbish works will start later this year with the venue set to reopen to the public in the first quarter of 2020.

Wyndham wants action on waste By Esther Lauaki Generating energy from Wyndham’s waste could become reality under a new council plan that maps the future of the Werribee tip. The Wyndham Refuse Disposal Facility Strategic Plan outlines six goals for the coming six years, in a bid to transition from a traditional landfill to a resource and energy recovery operation. Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw said that under the plan, the only waste going to landfill will be the leftovers following the recovery of resources.

“In Wyndham alone, we’re facing an increase from the current 103,000 tonnes to more than 180,000 tonnes each year,” Cr Shaw said. “As the only remaining council in Melbourne to still control a commercial landfill, we are in a unique position to provide best practice waste collection, treatment and disposal, while working with other councils to divert waste from landfill.” Cr Shaw said the plan would include developing a pre-sort facility at the RDF in Werribee. “This facility would ensure that all incoming

waste would be subject to a sorting operation that recovers valuable resources, such as organics,” she said. “These organics would then be processed by anaerobic digestion, to produce methane to generate energy, and organic materials that could be used in landfill rehabilitation works. “Another goal outlined in this plan is the recovery of energy from residual waste. “While we’re still working out the finer details of this plan – there are two options currently before us. “The first would see residual waste from

the recovery stage provided to an external third-party user as solid residual fuel, while the second is around the investigation of the potential for recovering energy from waste. “This would be in the form of a whole new kerbside food and garden organics service.” Meanwhile, Melbourne-based company SKM Recycling on Thursday night contacted local governments to inform them it would immediately stop accepting recyclables. Wyndham’s recyclable materials are processed by Visy Recycling and collections are not affected by SKM’s decision.

A brand-new, four-bedroom house in Wyndham Vale will be auctioned next month to raise funds for a worthwhile cause. Developer Lotus Living, in partnership with Porter Davis, Ivy Street Advertising and Oliver Hume Real Estate, will hold the auction in aid of Variety – the Children’s Charity. Variety supports children and families who are facing challenges through sickness, disadvantage or living with a disability. The house to be auctioned is located within the Jubilee estate, at Lot 240, 27 Welcome Parade.

A new 800-lot residential estate is being planned for Tarneit. Melbourne-based development company Akron Group last week opened expressions of interest for its $100 million Keystone community, ahead of a formal launch in early September. Keystone will occupy a 59-hectare site on Leakes Road. A statement released by the Akron Group said the estate would bring the concept of “walkable neighbourhoods” to the outer suburbs, much like the inner suburbs where corner shops, schools and parks are located within close proximity to housing. Akron development manager Andrew Harvey said Keystone would also include two “green boulevards” – wide, tree-lined streets that would prioritise pedestrians over cars. “We’ve been very conscious of offering a range of housing types and lot sizes to suit a variety of budgets, tastes and lifestyle choices – we want to promote and encourage diversity,” Mr Harvey said. Akron has partnered with urban planners Roberts Day to create a masterplan for Keystone. According to data from Wyndham council and demography company Id, Trugania’s population was 2958 in 2006. In comparison, the suburb’s population is expected to grow to 31,591 people by 2031. Wyndham’s entire population is expected to grow to 321,590 by 2031.

Police have arrested and charged five people in relation to a series of burglaries in which baby formula was stolen from across Melbourneâ€™s south east and west. It is alleged more than 40 burglaries were committed, including in Point Cook and Werribee, between June 19 and July 14. Skeleton Creek ‘dump’ on council radar

By Alesha Capone An elderly Hoppers Crossing couple are devastated after their beloved pet dog died after being attacked by a dog on the loose. Raelene Wilson said her husband, Fred, was walking their Jack Russell-chihuahua cross Minnie along Hampstead Drive when the attack occurred about noon on July 15. Mrs Wilson said a black dog, wearing a black collar covered in silver studs, ran at Mr Wilson and Minnie. Mr Wilson later described the dog as looking like a Staffy.

Wyndham council is calling on residents of Tilwinda Place in Truganina to report anyone they observe illegally dumping rubbish along Skeleton Creek. The council sent out letters to residents in the street earlier this month over concerns about green waste and general household waste being dumped near houses that back on to land near the creek. “Wyndham City is aware of illegal dumping of plant materials and other hard waste along Skeleton Creek,” the letter stated. “Dumping of waste has a negative impact on native plants by causing physical damage and blocks the plants underneath from sunlight and water that allows growth. It can also facilitate the spread of weeds.” Anyone caught littering could be prosecuted and fined up to $5000 under the Environment Protection Act The letter stated Skeleton Creek was home to one of Australia’s rarest ecosystems, the National Temperate Grasslands of the Victorian Volcanic Plain. Residents who see people dumping rubbish along the creek are asked to report the matter to council on 9742 0777. Wyndham council was contacted for comment.

Mr Wilson tried to beat the dog away with his walking stick and was knocked over by the dog as it ran away. Minnie sustained severe injuries around her neck and legs and was rushed to the vet but had to be euthanased. “My husband and I are a mess,” Mrs Wilson said. “I’m speaking out because we don’t want it to happen to a child or another little dog.” The Wilsons have reported the attack to Wyndham council. Council’s director of city operations, Stephen Thorpe, said council officers were investigating the attack. “Despite an extensive search of the area immediately after the attack, council has so far been unable to ascertain the location of the offending dog,” he said. “There are no dogs registered matching the

Donation a life changer By Esther Lauaki Ibrahim has spent more than half of his first three years of life in hospital. The Truganina three-year-old was diagnosed with biliary atresia at 13 weeks. It’s a disease of the liver and bile ducts found in infants. He now lives a happy and normal life thanks to a life-changing liver transplant he received just before he was two. Mum Imrana Raja said Ibrahim had a rough start to life. “He was born at 36 weeks and was quite a large baby at 3.8 kilograms,” Ms Raja said.

“He was monitored in the special care unit for the first week with low blood sugar and jaundice and his tummy was a bit larger than normal. “We eventually were discharged but we had to go back a few times because Ibrahim was still getting fevers.” Ms Raja said doctors confirmed the diagnosis after a liver biopsy. About eight months – and a number of preliminary procedures – later, Ibrahim received the transplant. Call for ‘black spot’ road funding By Alesha Capone An accident at a “black spot” intersection in Truganina has sparked calls for a roundabout or traffic lights to be installed. Police are investigating an accident at the Derrimut and Boundary roads intersection about 8am last Wednesday. Motorists and Wyndham council are calling for immediate action to make the intersection safer. In the Wyndham mayoral column published

in Star Weekly last week, mayor Mia Shaw wrote that the council was aware of “a number of incidents at the intersection”. She said the council had met with representatives from the Department of Transport (formerly VicRoads) to discuss possible solutions. More than 130 people also commented on a Facebook post about the latest crash, many calling for a safety upgrade at the intersection. Kahlee described the intersection as a “black spot”.

engaged an independent road safety auditor to look at the intersection, as well as others along Boundary Road. The council has also asked the state government to review the road. “While the upgrade and signalisation of the intersection is the preferred solution to address these safety issues, further funding from the state government is required,” the column stated. It stated that the council would continue to push for funding to deliver a permanent “signalised solution for this intersection”.

New manager in saddle Werribee Racing Club’s new general manager is a “racing man through and through”. Adam Wilkinson last week took over the reins from Ashley Baker and said he was keen to build on the work that the club had done in community engagement. “Werribee Cup Day is the showpiece of the racing season for the city of Wyndham,” Mr Wilkinson said. “I think it’s exciting that we’ve continued to grow that over time. It’s important to us to continue to engage with the community and showcase what the Werribee Racing Club is all about and what it can bring to the community.” Mr Wilkinson spent a decade as a regional manager in the retail sector before he took on the challenge of overseeing 21 racing clubs

across the state with Country Racing Victoria. He said racing fans had a lot to look forward to ahead of the racing season launch on September 4. “It’s a chance to build some excitement around racing,” Mr Wilkinson said. “On the launch evening we will have a chance to present to our sponsors, members and the public what the season holds and give people an understanding of what Cup Day is going to look like.” Mr Wilkinson said there would also be plenty happening thanks to the presence of international horses stabled at the quarantine centre from August 17.

Flood fears raised again By Alesha Capone Itâ€™s an unfortunate case of history repeating for an elderly woman who has expressed concern about flooding at Werribee Cemetery. Margaret Hassett, 84, said she visited the cemetery on July 18, where she was â€œdeeply concerned to find my late husbandâ€™s and my parentsâ€™ graves under waterâ€?. â€œI could not get access to visit them,â€? she said. She said the flooding along the cemetery pathways and around the graves meant she could not get close enough to put flowers where her loved ones are buried, without being submerged in water up to her knees. Mrs Hassettâ€™s son Stephen, who died when he was 14 months old, is also buried in their family plot along with her husband Cyril and parents Michael and Dot Oâ€™Connor. Mrs Hassett said a cemetery official had told her that due to the flooding, she would not be able to buried in the family plot, as the area would be too difficult to dig through. Back in April 1989, Mrs Hassett and her mother were featured in a front-page article in the Werribee Banner titled â€˜Flooded graves cause distress for familyâ€™. At the time, Mrs Hassett and her mother â€“ along with other residents â€“ expressed worry about the flooding at the cemetery. Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (GMCT) interim chief executive, Deb Ganderton, said the organisation would be happy to meet with Mrs Hassett to talk through her concerns. confirm that the presence of water pooling or ground water following rainfall would not prevent a burial in any of its cemeteries. â€œWe understand Mrs Hassettâ€™s distress caused by water pooling on the pathway inhibiting access to her sonâ€™s, husbandâ€™s and parentsâ€™ graves in our 150-year-old Werribee Cemetery,â€? Ms Ganderton said. â€œThis water pooling followed recent heavy rainfall. â€œWe acknowledge that, consistent with any open space areas after heavy rains, drainage can be an issue at some historic cemeteries because of the possible impact on existing monuments should works be required; for example such as raising the level of the path.â€?

Planting for the planet Rashi is starting early on her mission to change the world 1000 trees at a time. The nine-year-old Good News Lutheran College pupil started her own Grow and Save Trees campaign with the planet in mind. â€œMy planting initiative is a way to play an important role in looking after our planet and also making our future better and greener,â€? Rashi told Star Weekly Weekly. â€œIt is all of our responsibility to look after our planet and make it better. â€œI love my environment â€Ś I studied global warming. I learned how trees are either being cut down or not looked after, so I decided to start a campaign to Grow and Save Trees, and

invite other kids and adults to join me. My mission is to grow at least 1000 trees a year and definitely will need lots of helping hands.â€? Rashi said her parents, school teachers, Planet Ark staff, Wyndham council and various nurseries had offered help and guidance about what and where to plant. The young environmentalist took part in two tree-planting activities with family and friends at the Tarneit school and in Hoppers Crossing last weekend. She said more planting days were coming up. Tarneit brigade pumped By Esther Lauaki Truganina CFA has upgraded its operational fleet with three new trucks in time for the summer fire season. The brigade’s latest additions include a new medium pumper, heavy tanker and forward command vehicle. Treasurer Rosemary Utteridge said members were grateful the brigade now has its own pumper to help volunteers respond to an ever-increasing number of call-outs.

“This is the first time the brigade has had their own pumper to respond to emergencies,” Ms Utteridge said. “Previously the brigade has only operated tankers and pumper tankers. “It was important for the brigade to upgrade to a pumper due to the growing numbers of houses being built in Truganina, Tarneit and surrounding suburbs.” She said the Scania medium pumper, designed for urban firefighting and traffic accidents, can carry up to five firefighters and their equipment. The heavy tanker, primarily designed for semi-urban and rural environments, will replace the brigade’s old 1986 tanker that has been donated to the Fire Services Museum. The $70,000 field command vehicle was funded through the state government’s Volunteer Emergency Services Equipment Program in partnership with community fundraising efforts.

Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly said Truganina’s volunteer brigade has been supporting Melbourne’s west since 1940 and has 76 members. “Truganina Fire Brigade has been protecting the local community and surrounding districts for almost 80 years and deserves the highest

calibre of firefighting equipment,” Ms Connolly said at Monday’s official launch of the fleet. “We are proud to support the Truganina community and surrounding suburbs through the Volunteer Emergency Services Equipment Program, which provides much-needed operational equipment.”

The Hoppers Crossing community has paid tribute to dedicated volunteer, sportsman and teacher Leigh Hanneysee, who passed away this month after a long battle with illness. Mr Hanneysee is survived by his wife Cath, children Tristane, Lisa and Slade and grandchildren. A founding member of the Hoppers Crossing Football Club, he was the club’s first senior/reserves coach in 1976; a life member and was inducted into the club’s Team of the Decade in the 1970s and 1980s. Mr Hanneysee was also the Hoppers Crossing Cricket Club’s club champion twice in the 1970s. Tristane said her father worked as a woodwork teacher at Werribee Tech, Galvin Park Secondary College and Hoppers Crossing Secondary College. Tristane said her family wanted to thank Werribee Mercy Hospital’s ICU and emergency department for the care Mr Hanneysee received. Alesha Capone

VCAT knocks back childcare bid By Alesha Capone A proposal to develop a childcare centre on land adjacent to the heritage-listed former shire hall in Werribee has been rejected by VCAT. The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal issued its decision on the proposal earlier this month, after the developers appealed Wyndham council’s decision to refuse the plan. The developer, PHHH Investments No. 3 Pty

Ltd, was seeking permission to use and develop land near the former shire hall, which is now a Masonic centre, as a childcare centre for 91 children. The former shire hall, located near the corner of Watton Street and Greaves Street South, dates back to 1866, and served as Wyndham council’s first office, before being sold to the Masonic Lodge. The developer wants to build a two-storey building, with its front entrance to Greaves

Street South, near the former shire hall. The proposal also included upgrading and repairing the former shire hall. PHHH Investments No. 3 submitted to VCAT that the childcare proposal was “an appropriate and efficient use of under-utilised land” on the edge of the Werribee activity centre, and that the development would respect the significance of the heritage site. But Wyndham council said the centre would not respect the significance of the site’s heritage

value and would block the public’s views of the former shire hall. VCAT presiding member Megan Carew and member Lorina Nervegna said the former shire hall had “regional and possibly state significance, as the first shire hall in the district and among the earliest remaining in the state.” Ms Carew said although the idea of building the childcare centre had merit, VCAT stood by Wyndham council’s decision and would not grant a permit.

Victory over adversity Point Cook woman Suzanne Borello has been recognised for her achievement in living with type-one diabetes for 50 years. Mrs Borello was presented with the Kellion Victory Medal – named in honour of the late Claude Kellion AM, a Sydney businessman who established a foundation to promote diabetes research after his son died from diabetes complications – by Diabetes Victoria earlier this month. Mrs Borello’s husband Anthony was also recognised for being her carer for more than 40 years. Mrs Borello was nine years old when she was diagnosed with type-one diabetes. She said that type-one diabetes is something people are born with, whereas type-two diabetes usually develops due to a person’s lifestyle. “Having diabetes, it’s an everyday thing, you can’t forget you’ve got it – you can’t have a day off,” she said. “You’ve got to test your blood sugar at least four times a day, maybe more, adjust your

insulin and watch what you eat.” Mrs Borello said that medical technology surrounding diabetes had “changed a lot” since she was first diagnosed – when she was a child, diabetics had to test their urine to see how much sugar was in it, nowadays, blood testing is more accurate. She said that her attitude was to “always look on the bright side of life” and “never let diabetes get the better of you”. Beloved teacher farewelled By Esther Lauaki A stalwart of the Laverton community has been remembered as much for his kindness as his bold personality. John Rave, 89, was one of the first teachers at Laverton Secondary College and taught between 1970 and 1981. Friends, family and previous students gathered in Williamstown last Wednesday to remember Mr Rave, who died earlier this month. Damien Hynes, who taught alongside Mr Rave for six years, said he was “a man who had a presence, confidence, was fair, efficient and well organised”. “I first met John in 1975 when I came to Laverton high school as a young humanities teacher,” Mr Hynes said. “I was teaching in the same discipline as John and he was a great help to me personally. “I recall being given year 8 history and John said to me, ‘No worries’ … and turned up with worksheets and evaluation sheets for the years’ course. “That was John … he had a passion for his areas of teaching in history, geography, politics. “He had a keen interest in photography and family history, translating a whole family history book and he was proud of his heritage.” Former student Allan Calleja told Star Weekly his year 7 teacher had left a lasting impresson on him. “Laverton was very much a growing housing commission area and boomed during the ’60s,” Mr Calleja said.

“John Rave was a constant for everyone at a time when everything was changing. “It was his first teaching post and I remember that he had a very thick Dutch accent and could put the fear in any student by raising an eyebrow. “He was very stern but had the kindest heart at the same time. “He kept an association with the high school for many years and he was a mentor to the teachers. “He was loved, and very respected.”

Pupils at Al-Taqwa College cooked up a storm with former MasterChef finalist Michael Weldon last week. Mr Weldon, who was runner-up in the third MasterChef television series, visited the Truganina school last Wednesday and helped to teach 30 grade 6 pupils about healthy eating. Mr Weldon’s visit was part of a prize won by students at the school, after they entered the Coles Fresh Rainbow Challenge earlier

this year. Along with two other Australian schools, Al-Taqwa was named a winner in the competition, which asked schools to make videos showcasing healthy eating habits. While he was at the school, Mr Weldon also taught students how to make their own version of his granola breakfast recipe, using yoghurt, grains, seeds and fruits. Alesha Capone

MY WYNDHAM Werribee’s Leanne Taylor-Leckie is always up for a challenge. She spoke with Esther Lauaki about what she’s doing to raise awareness about mental health issues. What’s your connection to Wyndham?

My grandfather came to Werribee to live after the Second World War, and worked on the Metro Board of Works. My parents were born in Werribee, went to school in Werribee and built their first house in Hoppers Crossing. I was born in Werribee, grew up in Hoppers Crossing, went to school in Hoppers Crossing, played netball/athletics for Hoppers Crossing. I also started my business here and am raising my own family in Wyndham.

What hats do you wear in the Wyndham community? I’m a mum, wife, small business owner, strength and conditioning coach to our children’s programs. Began our kids strength and conditioning programs with encouragement from Beyond Blue – mental health and physical health work together. We had many parents coming to us to see if we could help keep their kids in sports. There is a large drop-out at ages 14/15 years in sport. We developed our programs that are not only fun to participate but create physical and mental strength abilities.

What are you passionate about?

Tell us about your sporting background. I played netball from the age of 7 at the old Hoppers Crossing netball courts and then at Werribee Recreation Centre and represented Elmer Region Netball in my teens. Continued to play netball and indoor netball, including the Victorian Masters games with my last game being six months after having my daughter. I’ve also been involved in Little Athletics from the age of 6 (to beat my older brother) at Galvin Park for Hoppers Crossing and represented Werribee in the regional clubs up until the age of 17. Now I am into trail running and love it.

What do you love about Wyndham? (Damjan Janevski)

People and their health. I began my career in the fitness industry where I helped people achieve and maintain their health and fitness goals, for the past 19 years I have been a myotherapist and strength and conditioning coach. I help people with musculoskeletal injuries and get them moving back into their normal function and lifestyle.

You are taking part in a “Push Up Challenge” at the moment. What does this involve and what is it for? The Push Up Challenge is about creating awareness around mental health. We have been given a goal each day of how many push-ups we need to achieve and share this amongst ourselves, our patients help out with some of the numbers too. Injuries West decided to participate as a team to create conversation

around mental health to help in eliminating the stigma that is still around this issue. We work with people all day every day and it’s important we understand the person in front of us. It is also important to us to show our patients that push-ups can be completed in many different ways depending on your ability and function. Our work as myotherapists is to get people moving and back to normality, especially after injury, and this is a great way to get people talking. We have been having a lot of fun with

The Town Planning Appeals Tribunal has approved the location of three new shopping centres in and around Hoppers Crossing. The decisions, however, were contrary to the wishes of the Board of Works and Werribee Shire Council, who had favored different sites.

Local hotels were targeted by undercover police, last Friday night, as part of a crackdown on drug dealers and users in Werribee. Twenty-one local CIB Detectives, uniformed officers, members of the Special Duties Squad and the Altona North District Support and Protective Security Group mingled with patrons of five hotels in Werribee and Laverton in an effort to clean-up the municipality.

Local heritage groups and environmental groups have condemned plans for a Greg Norman-designed 18-hole golf course proposed for the land at Werribee Park and west of Werribee River. As the Banner revealed last week, the Mansion Hotel Group has submitted preliminary plans to Parks Victoria for the course, which would take two years to build.

A controversial proposal for a strip club in Hoppers Crossing was knocked back by Wyndham Council on Monday. The unanimous decision by councillors overturned the original recommendation by officers to issue a planning permit for the Dunlop Road development, which would have been within the existing Old Geelong Road industrial precinct.

Comparable properties Knowing what comparable properties have sold for in recent months is a very strong guide as to the price range a property you are interested in will achieve on auction day or that you need to meet when you decide to make an offer for a private sale. Make sure that the comparable properties sold quite recently, since some areas will see considerable growth in six to 12 months. Selling agents will be able to give you more accurate information based on the

Initial research There is a wealth of information right at your fingertips. You can simply Google a suburb to discover the median prices for both houses and apartments, which, right from the start, will give you an excellent indication if this is somewhere you can afford. If you find a property that appeals, you can even find out when it last sold and for how much. There could be old photographs online that will show you if subsequent owners have done any renovations. Plus, there will be any number of comparable properties in the area. It is important that you do this research independently of the selling agent, if only for the peace of mind it will give you: no matter what you hear from other sources – the current owners, the selling agent, your family – you will know what the facts are because of your own research.

Giants put the call out for more women and juniors Werribee Giants Baseball Club is looking to expand its ranks. Top of the agenda for the Giants is the return of their women’s team this summer. Last year, the Giants fell short of numbers in their women’s section and were forced to enter an amalgamated Werribee/Footscray team to retain the players. Giants president Ryan Balzer wants to see the women’s program revived and thrive well into the future. “We had two women’s teams out of Werribee at one stage,” he said. “For whatever reason, there was a loss of interest one year or some players went to another club, we found ourselves too short to make up the teams. “That’s why we’re trying to rebuild the program again.” Balzer was bittersweet about the half Werribee, half Footscray women’s team last season.

While he was thrilled to be able to give those players that wanted to play a chance to do so and was pleased with the partnership between the two clubs, it hurt him that the Giants did not have their own team. “The fact we could put them on the park as a joint team ensured they could continue to play,” Balzer said. “That was the biggest thing for us, to give them a game in some way, shape or form. “It’s important for any of the community organisations to provide a service that allows men, women, children and masters the opportunity to play sport and in our case baseball.” Werribee has appointed Jacob Sigismondi as its women’s coach. Sigismondi was one of the co-coaches of the Werribee/Footscray team last season. “We’re dedicated to Jacob and we’re going to get him a higher coaching accreditation before

Tigers find a way to win By Lance Jenkinson Werribee Districts have ice in their veins in the tight finishes in the Western Region Football League division 1. The Tigers improved to 3-0 in games decided by a goal or less after coming back from six goals down to beat Spotswood by six points at Soldiers Reserve on Saturday. Winning the close ones has been crucial for the Tigers because of how close the top six teams are in the league. Only one win separates second to sixth in the standings, with the Tigers sitting third. Significantly, all three of Werribee Districts’ nail-biting wins have come against high quality opposition in ‘eight-point games’ – two against second-placed Spotswood and one against ladder-leader Altona. Tigers coach Chris Gilham believes it could be the difference between his side getting a double chance in the finals or not. “In any competition, if you reverse the close games, it just paints a different picture,” he said. “We’ve been lucky enough to win a few of our close ones this year, which keeps us in the top three hunt.” Not only have those nail-biting wins improved Werribee Districts’ chances of a top-four finish, it also shows that its best is good enough to beat any side in the competition. Altona and Spotswood have been two of the more hyped clubs, but the Tigers have a 3-1 record against the top two and would fancy their chances in a one-off final. Gilham is particularly pleased to finally get over the Spotswood hoodoo. “Spotswood’s had the wood over us,” Gilham said. “They won six or seven in a row against us. “To beat them twice, home and away, it’s really good for our confidence. “It just shows that our best footy is good enough.” Werribee Districts were a long way down on the scoreboard in the first half against Spotswood on Saturday, but had not given up hope in the game. The Tigers trailed by 36 points early in the second quarter, but Gilham could see some positive signs. “I thought we were doing enough right not to give it up,” he said. Werribee Districts took control of the game in the third quarter on the back of a five-goal quarter from Nick Buykx. The Tigers dominance began at the coal face with Bailey Siwek, Dillon Viojo-Rainbow and Trent Lee throwing their bodies on the line. A key coaching move made a difference with Gilham putting Ben McMahon in the ruck and moving Will Sullivan forward with his

Werribee Districts will visit Deer Park on Saturday, the only top-five side they have not beaten this season. Falcons ready to fly against rival Cougars The rivalry between City West Falcons and the Geelong Cougars is set to go up another notch in the Victorian Netball League championship division finals. The top-two ranked sides will face off in a mouth-watering semi-final at the State Netball and Hockey Centre tonight at 7pm for a direct passage through to the season decider. The beginning of the rivalry can be traced back to last year’s grand final when the Falcons beat the Cougars in a hard-fought contest to take out the premiership. While that grand final created an instant rivalry, there was already one building among the two clubs west of the West Gate Bridge. Ever the netball promoter, Falcons coach Marg Lind was quick to jump on the fierce city-versus-country factor. “It’s a Geelong and Melbourne thing – just like Western Bulldogs and Geelong Cats [in the AFL],” Lind said. “There’s definitely a rivalry, it’s always competitive and we know it’s going to be on.” Moreover, the two teams are extremely familiar with one another. Geelong is coached by former Falcons assistant coach Gerard Murphy. The Cougars also have five starting players who came through the Falcons system. “They all know each other pretty well,” Lind said. “A lot of them have come through our stable and some have come through state teams together and are a very similar age group. “There’s a fair bit of knowledge about each other on both sides.” Lind half-joked that Geelong’s potential tactics to bring down the Falcons could be “tactics we’d use on ourselves” because of Murphy’s familiarity with Falcons netball. Electric Leaf a car for the future By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring

Who would have thought during the global fuel crisis of the 1970s that less than fifty years later motorists would be laughing in the face of the avaricious petrol barons at the demise of the internal combustion engine? The time has not come yet, but if the development of electric vehicles such as the Nissan Leaf continues, that day is just around the corner. The Leaf first saw the light of day in 2010, arriving in Australia two years later. Since then more than 410,000 have been sold in 51 markets, making it one of the most popular electric vehicles in the world. In those days a 24kWh lithium-ion battery gave the Leaf a range of 170 kilometres. The new second generation Nissan Leaf, with its 40 kWh 350V battery, is capable of travelling 270 km with no nasty tailpipe emissions. Plugging into a 15A 240V home wall socket the Leaf will recharge from ‘battery low’ warning to full charge in around 24 hours. Alternatively, depending on the fast charger used, it takes about 7.5 hours from empty or with the more powerful box to 80 per cent full from low warning in just 60 minutes. But more than that, the Leaf has the capability of returning power from its battery to the grid for home or business use. This means the car can be charged during off-peak periods, say overnight, and plugged in to the home to power the kettle, cooker or even hairdryer in the morning high-rate period. Alternatively, the Leaf can be charged ‘on the run’ at any of 783 public stations around Australia, of which 69 are of the quick variety, doing the job in 60 minutes. and 14 per cent more, respectively, than the previous Leaf. The motor is up to a third quieter than ICE/hybrid rivals. A feature of the set-up is the operation of the e-Pedal, which at the flick of a switch on the centre console, allows the vehicle to be driven using the accelerator alone. pedals especially in heavy traffic, is reduced and driving becomes more relaxed. Unruffled is the perfect description of the Leaf’s performance. Electric power steering has a more linear feel and is more responsive to sharp changes in direction. Noise, vibration and harshness have been moderated with aerodynamic upgrades and structural rigidity, while the electric motor has been made quieter.
