A pitch for stardom Contemporary country music singer and songwriter Tiah Ashley is set to wow audiences at the Gympie Music Muster next month. Ashley, from Point Cook, is one of 31 semi-finalists who will perform in the muster’s annual talent search in Queensland. The 25-year-old said she was “truly grateful and honoured” to be selected for the event, which will run from August 22 to 25. Ashley started singing at the age of seven and plays guitar and mandolin. “I have always loved country music – it is just good, honest music,” she said. “What I love most about performing and singing is the rush of excitement and good feelings that come with it. “It has always been a passion of mine … there is no better feeling for me than being on stage in front of an audience that is singing along, dancing and enjoying my music as much as I love singing it.” Ashley travelled to Nashville in 2013, where she recorded her first EP with Dolly Parton producer Kent Wells. “I have organised to go back over to Kent’s studio again later this year so he can help me polish up some more songs that I have been working on,” she said.

A $341 million development is proposed for the former Masters site in Williams Landing which has stood empty for the past four years. Wyndham council has received a planning permit application for a development at the old Masters home improvement store at the corner of Old Geelong and Palmers roads. The proposed development would include offices and commercial space, residential space, a hotel, childcare centre, car parking and potential community service space across a number of buildings. However, residents cannot have a say on the application because the site is within a Priority Development Zone and a public notice period is not required as consultation occurred when the zoning was determined. Williams Landing Residents Association president Ian MacGowan welcomed the news of the redevelopment but said residents had some concerns. “We all moved here expecting that there would be development of the town centre and wanting more job opportunities in Williams Landing,” Mr MacGowan said. “But at the same time, we need to make sure that there is infrastructure to support the development in the area. “We are most interested in what the infrastructure will offer in terms of jobs. “The main question we have is what impact the development will have on our roads, traffic and congestion.” Mr MacGowan said parking surrounding the development was also a major concern. A Facebook post from Wyndham council stated: “We do understand … that there is strong community interest in this site.” “Council officers are currently assessing the planning application and a decision will be made to ensure the appropriate regulations are met.” Property records show Perth-based developer Cedar Woods sold the Williams Landing Masters site to Estia Health founder Peter Arvanitis for $36 million in 2015. It has since stood empty while the developer forged ahead with other developments in Williams Landing. Star Weekly contacted Mr Arvanitis for comment.

Call for an end to stadium leaks By Alesha Capone More than 560 people have signed a petition calling for a permanent fix to the leaking roof at Eagle Stadium in Werribee. The Change.org petition, called #fixtheroof3030, was started by Wyndham resident Joe Williamson about three weeks ago. Mr Williamson said the $47 million stadium had been plagued by a leaking roof since it was built about three years ago, forcing the cancellation of basketball and netball games on days of heavy rainfall.

Mr Williamson is also calling for the council to reveal how much the leaking roof has cost ratepayers. Werribee Basketball Association (WBA) president Paul Jones said that as a major tenant of Eagle Stadium, the organisation shared the frustration experienced by the people who had signed the petition. “The petition, organised at the grass-roots level, clearly demonstrates the frustration the entire Werribee community has with the ongoing issues with Eagle Stadium’s roof,” he said.

“These roof leaks have had a significant impact on our competitions, our clubs and, most importantly, our players. “As your readers will be aware, we are continuing to call on the council to fix the roof so the kids of Wyndham can play sport.” Wyndham city life director David Semmens said that since becoming aware of the roofing issues at Eagle Stadium, the council had worked with the architect, builder and product manufacturers to determine the cause. “We have also implemented a number of temporary measures in an attempt to minimise

leakages whilst a permanent solution is identified,” he said. “However, it appears the issues are quite complex. “Our priority continues to be finding a permanent solution as quickly as possible as we are extremely frustrated that this issue has arisen and will be seeking compensation where possible. “We understand that the disruption has already been difficult for stadium users and it is possible that there may be further disruption while we fix the roof.”

Shadowfax raises a glass to 20 years It will be a case of more the merrier when Shadowfax winery celebrates its 20th anniversary later this year. Vandals have struck newly planted trees in Werribee. Manor Court Werribee Aged Care manager Ross Smith said staff and residents had been on the lookout since about 10 trees were uprooted, broken or reduced to stumps in surrounding streets earlier this month. “It’s very disappointing that the trees have been damaged,” Mr Smith said. “Wyndham council planted new nature strip trees in Market Road, Dewan Avenue and Hogan Grove. “These are well-established trees that are about one and a half metres high with stakes and mulch. “Unfortunately, the youth of the area have taken a dislike to the trees. “Just about every one has been snapped off or significantly damaged.” Mr Smith said the vandalism took place over several nights. “They pulled three heavy stakes out of the ground that were surrounding the trees and one of the trees … there’s nothing left,” he said. “We’ve been asking people to be more vigilant and keep a lookout because a lot of young people use this street as a shortcut to get through to Werribee. “We’ve been pretty lucky that we have only suffered minimal graffiti and damage.” Mr Smith said council officers had been investigating and were going to replace the trees.

Great strides for charity By Esther Lauaki A Hoppers Crossing firefighter is stepping up his support for those living with mental illness. Mark Unwin and a small team of colleagues will take on the Melbourne Firefighters Stair Climb in September in honour of a crew member who died last month. Mr Unwin will compete against more than 600 firefighters to climb 28 floors of the Crown Metropol Hotel wearing full firefighting gear. Cork courts on the way for Tarneit Rise New play areas are on the horizon for Tarneit Rise Primary School. A $175,000 state grant will go toward a new soccer pitch and netball courts for Tarneit Rise Primary School – constructed with an environmentally friendly natural cork material. Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly said new landscaping works would give students safe spaces to play and relax outdoors. “I share the excitement of everyone who has helped to turn Tarneit Rise Primary School’s vision into a reality, as well as that of the growing Tarneit community who will benefit from these great new sporting facilities,” Ms Connolly said. “Natural cork is a safe, organic and renewably sourced material for sporting pitches, and is proving increasingly popular over legacy sporting pitch materials such as rubber and latex.” The funding, from the state’s shared facilities fund, will be allocated to Wyndham council for the completion of the landscaping and pitch. The school’s fundraising committee has also been fundraising towards a $60,000 goal for a second playground. Tarneit Rise, which opened last year for students across prep to grade 6 has about 600 children on its roll. Paper cuts into recycling glut By Esther Lauaki A new recycling facility in Truganina is expected to process 39,000 tonnes of paper a year. Australian Paper Recovery’s $2.5 million paper sorting facility provides full grade separation of kerbside and commercial mixed paper and cardboard. As long as no glass is mixed in with collected recyclables, the high quality paper and card is sorted and graded, then reprocessed locally and used to make newspaper and packaging. Managing director Darren Thorpe said he was in discussions with a number of councils about adopting a “no glass collection” recycling policy. “We need uncontaminated product, especially from glass,” Mr Thorpe said. “We can accept the paper and card here and sort it into a form that can be used by domestic outlets in Australia feeding into a circular economy.” Since beginning operations in June, the facility has expanded to accept additional materials from regional and metropolitan kerbside recycling, including plastics and metals, further increasing recycling capability in Victoria. “If you’d seen us six weeks ago when we took the first load … we had quite a challenge but here we are six weeks later and early results are showing really great outcomes. “But we need support from a wide range of industry and government agencies if we are to solve the wider issues with recycling and we believe we at APR are doing our bit.” Energy, Environment and Climate Change Minister Lily D’Ambrosio last week announced $475,000 in funding towards the project. “Facilities like these are a crucial part of

Unemployment drops in Wyndham By Alesha Capone Wyndham’s unemployment rate has fallen by two per cent within a 12-month period. According to data from the federal Department of Employment, Skills, Small and Family Business, there were 7458 jobless residents in Wyndham at June this year, an unemployment rate of 5.7 per cent. In comparison, in June last year, Wyndham recorded 9686 unemployed residents, an unemployment rate of 7.7 per cent. The Wyndham suburbs which recorded the

highest levels of unemployment were Werribee with 2041 jobless residents (compared to 2509 previously); Hoppers Crossing with 1557 jobless residents (compared to 2101 previously); Point Cook with 970 jobless residents (compared to 1282 previously); and Wyndham Vale with 955 jobless residents (compared to 1290 previously). The municipality in Victoria which recorded the highest level of joblessness at June was Brimbank, also in Melbourne’s west, with 9111 unemployed residents and an unemployment rate of 8.6 per cent. Sports development portfolio holder Peter Maynard said there was a gap in young people’s summer team sports in Manor Lakes. “What council and Cricket Victoria are trying to do is to get children and teenagers involved in the cricket club at an early age to learn new skills, make new friends and be part of a team environment,” Cr Maynard said. “Setting up these youth teams also gives volunteers – usually parents, carers and friends of the players – an opportunity to socialise with other families in the area and get involved in the running of the club. “We are getting the ball rolling with this initiative, but it is the volunteers who will ensure the smooth running of the junior teams and contribute to their success.

“So, we would like as many young people and adults to come forward and let us know what sort of teams they would like to see, whether that is mixed teams, female-only or boys teams and what age groups are interested.” Council officers will offer support to volunteers in setting up the teams and administration committees for the first 12 months to ensure the smooth rollout of the junior teams. Police blitz nabs young offenders By Alesha Capone

A police operation in Wyndham during the school holidays has resulted in more than 20 young people being taken into custody for various offences. Sergeant Julian Frazer said police Operation Torrent aimed to provide a highly visible police presence and to cut youth crime including street robberies and anti-social behaviour during the school holidays. He said Wyndham police were supported by the Mounted Branch, Operations Response Unit and the Hobsons Bay Community Safety Team during the operation, which ran from June 28 to July 14. â€œOver the two-week period, 24 people aged between 12 and 17 were processed for a range of offences including robbery, theft and trespass,â€? Sergeant Frazer said. He said police also issued 68 penalty notices for traffic and street offences including offensive behaviour and drunkenness. â€œUnfortunately several isolated incidents of street robberies occurred during the operation,â€? Sergeant Frazer said. â€œWe want to reassure the community we are committed to holding these youth offenders to account as we know the impact this type of offending has on innocent victims going about their daily business. â€œPeople have every right to carry their valuables without fear of being robbed. â€œIf practical, we recommend people carry their valuables in their front pocket and keep them out of sight to reduce the opportunistic nature of this crime.â€? Two nurses, who live in Werribee and Altona, will soon head overseas to volunteer at an orphanage and clinic. Sally Kime and Dianne Marshall Payne will fly to Tanzania later this month, and will volunteer from August 1-15. â€œThis is Diâ€™s third time going to Tanzania and my first,â€? Ms Kime said. â€œDi and a few of her friends and family currently sponsor children from the orphanage. â€œI have heard about Diâ€™s experience and it sounds so amazing, I just want to be a part of it too and help others who really have nothing compared to what is offered here in the western world. â€œI know I have achieved so much here working in the western suburbs and been able to help may people improve their quality of life and remain at home. â€œWith working in a place like Tanzania, I am hoping my 20 years of nursing experience can make small changes to their [the orphanâ€™s] quality of life too.â€? Winner’s ticket to ride A lucky Wyndham resident’s lotto numbers came through earning them a share in $1.4 million earlier this month. The local winner was one of 36 in the Abracadabra syndicate who each pocketed nearly $40,000 each. Wyndham Village Lotto and News agent Mahesh Thakur said he was delighted he sold another winning ticket. “We’re thrilled to have sold a division one ticket,” he said. “This isn’t the biggest win that we’ve had in store, we had a $7.5 million win four years

ago and have had three more wins since. “[We’re] very happy for the customer.” There were 14 division one winning entries nationally in the TattsLotto draw 3963, on July 13. Bid to stop motorcycle ‘menace’ By Alesha Capone A man whose dog was hit by a motorcyclist riding near a path along Skeleton Creek in Hoppers Crossing is calling for improved safety measures and law enforcement to stop illegal motorcycle access to the creek area. Daniel (who asked for only his first name to be used), has started a petition on Change. org. It has so far been signed by more than 1050 people. The petition states that Daniel believes there needs to be stricter penalties for people caught accessing the creek on motorbikes, increased

patrols of the area by police on motorcycles and that Wyndham council needs to do more to prevent motorbikes from accessing the creek. Daniel said that he was overseas at the time his dog, Dennis, was hit. The collision occurred during the school holidays, when his partner, Rachael, was walking their eight-month-old daughter in a pram with Dennis accompanying them. Rachael said that as a group of motorcyclists approached, she yelled at them to slow down but they gestured rudely at her before one of the riders hit Dennis. She said the rider, who fell off his bike, said “sorry” before riding away.

Doing the hard graft If you’re feeling like it is time to branch out in the garden, head along to this week’s Heritage Fruit Tree Festival at Werribee Park Farm. The orchard, which dates back to the 1870s, was once renowned for its peaches, grapes, apples, quinces, pears, plums and several other fruits, as well as walnuts and olives. But as the years went by, the orchard was forgotten and fell into a neglected state. However, in 2010 a community group was formed to restore the orchard to its former glory. For the past seven years, the Werribee Park Heritage Orchard organising committee has been running grafting day events at the site. This year will be the first they have expanded into a festival, with the slogan “Australia’s largest grafting event”. The Heritage Fruit Tree Festival, to be held Sunday, July 28 from 10am to 3pm, will include

rare and heritage fruit trees for sale from $15, grafting demonstrations and grafts to buy. There will also be food, wine and coffee on sale – bring your own reusable cup – market stalls including makers demonstrations, talks and tours of the orchard; live folk music with The Angelicats playing from 10.30am; and a face-painter. Friends of Skeleton Creek publicity officer John Dawes said motorcyclists and mini-bike riders accessed the creek’s shared walking and cycling path, and nearby parkland, in both Wyndham and Hobsons Bay. “These kids have come through near where we are planting and nearly skittled some of our volunteers,” Mr Dawes said.

“They shouldn’t be menacing the public, which is what happened with Daniel’s partner – it’s just a matter of time before someone is going to be injured or killed.” Wyndham city operations director Stephen Thorpe said: “While Victoria Police is the authority for investigating and apprehending people committing offences involving motorbikes, road bikes, dirt bikes and monkey bikes, council supports Victoria Police in their efforts.” Mr Thorpe said the council recently purchased two trail bikes for police to allow for more patrols of public reserves.

The Grange in for a makeover By Esther Lauaki Tired old classrooms at The Grange P-12 College are in for a revamp thanks to a multi-million dollar boost. The school will receive a major upgrade to its science block, including sport science learning spaces and science specialist areas thanks to a state grant of $9.5 million. Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly said the investment would help the students and staff achieve their best.

“Education matters and every child, regardless of their postcode, deserves a first-class facility in which they can learn and thrive,” Ms Connolly said. “The Grange P-12 College already has some of the best teachers, students and staff – soon they’ll have the world-class classrooms, buildings and sporting facilities to match.” Education minister James Merlino said the investment would help turn the school’s vision into a reality. “Right across Victoria, we are building and

upgrading schools so our students and teachers have the best facilities and every child is given every chance to succeed,” he said on a visit to the school last week. “Investing in specialised facilities – such as a dedicated sport science learning space – means that students can chase their passions into rewarding careers.” Mr Merlino said the upgrade was part of the government’s investment to deliver new schools, more than 1400 upgrades and support over 5000 construction jobs for Victorians.

Designing ways Tayla Eckley is charging her way towards a bright future. The Hoppers Crossing 18-year-old was recently honoured with a Premier’s VCE Award in product design and technology after she last year earned a 50 study score and exceeded 90 in her ATAR score. The Premier’s Award recognises students who demonstrated outstanding achievement in their VCE year “I was shocked,” Tayla said of receiving the award. “I’m very proud to receive the award but I wasn’t expecting it.” While she earned the award for textiles and design, her tertiary studies are leading her in another direction. Tayla is now settled into her first year of a bachelor’s degree in psychological science at Deakin University. “I’ve always been really interested in why people think the way that they do,” she said.

“I definitely want to pursue something relating to psychology in the future.” Outside of study, Tayla keeps fit and busy as a taekwondo instructor for five to seven-year-olds at City West Taekwondo in Hoppers Crossing. Pancakes and pyjamas Children and staff at a Point Cook early learning centre definitely weren’t sleeping on the job last week, even though they were wearing pyjamas. On Friday, youngsters and employees at the Guardian Point Cook Play and Learn Early Learning Centre wore sleepwear for National Pyjama Day. The annual event is held to support The Pyjama Foundation, which provides children in foster care with support to develop their learning, life skills and confidence.

The early learning centre collected gold coin donations for the foundation on National Pyjama Day. In addition, in the lead-up to the day, the centre collected donations from the families and the community, raising almost $200 for The Pyjama Foundation. Train punctuality off the rails By Alesha Capone The Werribee train line recorded the worst punctuality out of Melbourne’s 16 metropolitan train lines during June, with hundreds of services failing to arrive on time. The event aims to develop leadership and life skills in youths aged 14 to 17, through activities including BMX, rock climbing, zip lining, whitewater rafting, rock climbing and mountain biking. Both Ben and Hunter will celebrate their birthdays during the World Scout Jamboree, turning 14 and 17 respectively. “My birthday is going to be in summer for once,” Ben said. described the Werribee line’s punctuality figures as “a shocking performance”. “The Werribee line has the dubious honour of recording the worst punctuality of the 16 metro lines in June,” Mr Davis said. “If you’re a commuter, that’s pretty bad.” Mr Davis said that in addition, during June there were 341 train services which were cancelled, run short or skipped or bypassed stations on the Werribee line compared to 64 services in June last year. “It’s a shocking record, you would expect the local MPs to be angry about this and that they would be

intervening on behalf of their constituents on this line,” Mr Davis said. According to PTV, a number of incidents contributed to the result, including an overhead power issue near Aircraft Station on June 3 and ill passengers who required medical assistance. A state government spokesperson said that train operator Metro Trains could be fined more than a million dollars per month, if it failed to meet set targets. “We will continue to work closely with Metro Trains to ensure its performance returns to the levels our passengers deserve.”

Teeing off on the world stage Six-year-old Chilton could barely swing a club a year ago – but what a difference 15 months makes. The Point Cook golfer recently competed at the 52nd Junior World Golf Championships in San Diego and tied for 15th place after three rounds. Chilton is one of two Australian boys who competed in the six years and under division. Mum Kay Shum said Chilton started playing golf when he was four. “About 15 months ago, Chilton couldn’t even hold a club and hit a single shot and now he has become one of the most competitive junior golfers in the world and the youngest junior member ever in Sanctuary Lakes Golf Club,” Ms Shum said. “The Junior World Championships is the highest level of tournament in junior golf, there are many superstars in golf who have also won this tournament before they turned pro including Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els and Jason day.” “We’re very proud of Chilton.” The young golf gun has already won seven trophies and medals in the past 12 months from local and national tournaments including the Junior World Championships qualifier earlier this year.

A Wyndham councillor has expressed disappointment at a VCAT decision to approve the construction of 26 double-storey townhouses in a Tarneit street. Cr Josh Gilligan said he was “incredibly disappointed” in VCAT’s recent decision to approve a planning application for the townhouses to be built at 3 Onyx Way. The VCAT decision comes after the council knocked back the planning application in December last year, after receiving 67 objections to the proposal. In a separate decision, also made last year, the council approved a plan to build 13 double-storey units at 1 Onyx Way. Cr Gilligan said VCAT’s recent decision on 3 Onyx Way meant that a total of 39 dwellings would be built across the two neighbouring blocks of land. He described the 26 townhouses planned for 3 Onyx Way as “an overdevelopment”. The two sites are located within a part of Tarneit where high-density housing is encouraged, under a development plan approved in 2004, titled the ‘Ridgeland Development Plan’. Cr Gilligan said that Wyndham council had written to the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) seeking advice on planned changes to the municipality’s planning scheme, with the aim of giving residents greater transparency and notification rights on developments. “This includes gaining increased planning controls in the Wyndham Planning Scheme, including the power to revoke development overlay plans like the Ridgeland Development Plan, or introduce sunset clause for a development plan overlay,” he said.

David: We’ve been here for 44 years. Our first home was in ‘old’ Hoppers Crossing. Cheryl: We lived in Rudolph Street which we thought was pretty good at Christmas time. We lived there for 12 years, and then bought and built where we are now. David: There is plenty that has changed. Cheryl: The biggest for me, was when I worked in the city. I caught the Geelong-line train for eight years and made lots of friends, as we all sat in the one compartment. I always said they would electrify the train line when I stopped working in the city, and they did! When we moved here, we liked the area because it felt like the country, but was still part of the city. David: The best part now is the improvement in the facilities, such as supermarkets, restaurants and schools. We are also happy that our family lives nearby in Wyndham. Cheryl: There wasn’t much in Hoppers Crossing back then. David: We like to support local businesses. There are so many great coffee places and such a range of choices of where to eat. What would you change about the area, if you could? Cheryl: The traffic.

David: It’s terrible, I don’t think there’s anyone who wouldn’t agree. Cheryl: Also parking at railway stations. Whenever I go to the city I can never get a park. You have to be dropped off and in the streets surrounding the station, there are cars parked everywhere. How long have you been operating Mossfiel Electrical? David: I think about 30 years. It started out as small and part-time. I worked for the fire services for 30 years and then I came into the business full-time and Cheryl did too. We have won two Wyndham Business Awards, of which we’re very proud. Cheryl: We won them in 2007 and 2010. Every year we have entered the business awards, we have made the finals. David: I have enjoyed putting apprentices on and seeing them come through and develop. We are proud of our contribution to the electrical industry. Cheryl: I have completed a Diploma of Business which I really enjoyed. We have always considered ourselves a family business and we have excellent staff who help us so much. We have been fortunate that with their assistance, and hard work, we have been able to holiday overseas in recent times.

When nominations closed for Werribee Shire vacancies yesterday afternoon they revealed contests in two Ridings. One sitting councillor is being opposed while there will be a contest to fill the vacancy caused by the retirement of another councillor.

The on-again off-again university status of the planned $7 million Western Institute Werribee campus was given the go-ahead after a decision was handed down by the State Training Board, last week. The surprise announcement comes after the STB recommended that the Werribee campus be incorporated into the proposed Western College of TAFE, three weeks ago, instead of the University of Technology as proposed last May.

A section of a new, Greg Norman-designed 18-hole golf course would be built across Werribee Park’s historic old orchard and river flats areas, according to a preliminary set of plans submitted to Parks Victoria last week. The Mansion Hotel Group is behind the plans which, although only in their early stages, have already raised the ire of a number of locals who plan to vehemently protest the multi-million dollar proposal.

A Tarneit mother and her three children have endured sewage spewing from drains, and flooded rooms, since moving into a rented house last month. Dianne Chircop plans to make a claim in the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal for the cost of the damage to her property in the house.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir pays homage to the Republika We applaud what Eva Maddox and her crew are doing at Ragusa Republika. Here there are no shortcuts, cutting of corners or scrimping. Everything is high class and stylish, the dining room itself elegant and warmed just right on the chilly night we visit. That hands-on approach extends to just about every aspect of the food, from house-made stocks and up. Eva and wine expert Pino are enthusiastic out front and Team CTS – Kenny, Bennie, Nat – very much enjoys taking up the invitation of a complimentary meal. The prices here are on the high side – but punters most definitely get what they pay for. Our Croatian food adventure starts with a bang and hardly ever lets up. Warm, fresh-baked rolls are sensational and served with olive oil and (house-made) ajvar (relish). Zagorski strukli are traditional baked pastry pillows filled with ricotta and truffle oil ($19). We get one apiece – and it’s almost like they float to our eager mouths. The squid ink dumplings that come with crni njoki ($20/$39) are almost as light, though it is the fresh-as calamari with garlic and chilli that truly grabs the attention. The chicken noodle soup is the big hit of the night. It has just the right amount of oil to lend every mouthful a velvety feel. And, yep, the noodles are housemade. Bennie is very satisfied with his svinjska

He reports that while the marinated and roasted pork belly meat is not fall-apart tender, it remains moist and “just right” to his way of thinking. Ribarska popara – traditional seafood stew with paprika, chilli, tomato and polenta ($42) – juggles the delicate and the lusty just as well as I have been expecting. The one dish that falls short of delighting us is Nat’s lignje u proseku of roasted calamari with potato, capers and prosek ($41). For all we know, this could be an outstanding rendition of this dish. But the combined sweetness of the onions and dessert wine leaves us more puzzled than anything. Strudla od visnje (sour cherry strudel with hazelnut ice cream, $17) and knedle (plum dumplings with plum sauce and sour cream, $17) are every bit as perfect and sweet-withsome-sour as father and son were hoping for. Marian College team effort succeeds For the second consecutive year, Marian College in Sunshine West has been recognised as one of a select number of “high gain” Victorian schools.

he Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) publishes NAPLAN results annually, via the My School website, of the literacy and numeracy skills of students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The latest data identified “high gain” schools nationwide that achieved improved NAPLAN results for students from one testing period to the next – and Marian College is in that mix. Principal Raymond Pisani says Marian College students have demonstrated substantially above-average growth in literacy in the reading component, which has been shown to have a significant impact on future success. “These results reflect a combined effort from teachers, parents and the various programs initiated and conducted at Marian College,” he says. “ACARA has acknowledged the college’s fantastic accomplishment and for sustaining the achievement from the previous year. “This recognition highlights and rewards the work that the school’s teachers have been doing, focusing on optimising the progress of every student.” Various strategies have been employed at the college, many underpinned by its three-year involvement in the Visible Learning Plus Project. Other strategies developed by the college include: • Implementing a whole-school approach to promoting and supporting reading, led by

A great space for the best of care Demand for dementia care continues to increase each year, but the managing director of Manor Court Aged Care, Ross Smith, believes dedicated building design and dementia-related care have failed to keep pace with growth.

e explains how Manor Court Aged Care, Werribee’s leading community not-for-profit residential aged-care facility, tackled this important issue. “First we sought the services of architects Bryant Alsop to redesign our memory support unit,” Mr Smith says. “We asked them to incorporate current best practice in building design, instructing them to create large open spaces to support movement and safety, to create links to the past and to provide activity areas and spaces for residents to be alone.” When building started in May, it was expected to be a 10-week project, but it was finished a week early. “Landbuild from Williams Landing structured the build to cause minimum disruption to our residents,” Mr Smith says. “A lot of building components were manufactured off site to ensure there were no delays – and there weren’t. Impressively, it was completed a week earlier and exceeded our expectations.” The $400,000 upgrade was enhanced through a $20,000 donation to replace the furniture from Werribee Rotary. “There’s no use putting old furniture into a new building, so this wonderful donation

allowed us to fit it out with brand-new furniture,” Mr Smith says. “We are thrilled with the new facility.” The memory support unit now has large open spaces to allow residents to see and be seen – and there’s additional support of safe movement for wandering residents. Large murals decorate walls and create a pleasing outdoor feel, while there are two dedicated rooms for men’s and women’s activities. Resident comfort was considered throughout the process, Mr Smith says. “Dementia patients like the security of having things from the past around them,” he says. “So we have several old features to create memory links, a sense of comfort and to cushion the effects of new surrounds. These include an old red phone box from the 1960s, as well as old signs and photos.” People are welcome to book a tour of the memory support unit – call reception to arrange. The concept of a mobile tax service is a relatively unfamiliar one, in the western suburbs at least, with Wayne’s one of only two. It could very well be the way of the future, yet in some ways it harks back to the past. “A mobile tax service, where I go to a client’s home or place of business, is very much of now,” Wayne says. “People these days seem to be more and more time-poor, it can be a real challenge to carve out time to make an appointment and sit down with the tax man, in his office, and at hours that might not suit. “That’s just how it is now, and I see that a mobile tax service – if it can offer years of tax experience and full qualifications – is the way to go. “While it’s a newish concept in the tax sector it’s actually a service similar to one offered by various financial/insurance

advisers decades ago. They’d gather around the kitchen table with mums and dads after dinner was finished and get all the affairs sorted. “It’s still like that with the way I work. I fit in with the time that suits the client, in a place he or she feels relaxed, and we get to discuss exactly what’s needed. “Any relevant paperwork or information is right at hand – no making the effort of getting to a tax office then realising you didn’t have it with you.” Apart from the convenience factor, Wayne brings plenty of personality to his job. He likes a chat and meeting different people all the time, listening to their stories, and being able to help them. New Homes Engineered timber lays the foundation for shift in building The way Australian homes are built could be changed forever, with new research into a type of engineered timber showing it could cement its place as an environmentally friendly alternative to concrete. Australian cross-laminated timber, or CLT, can replace concrete in many situations, including being used as a foundation for a house. Studies have already been conducted on European CLT, which is being used in towers and building extensions in Australia now. But local CLT is different because the composition of the wood differs here. Associate Professor at Deakin University Mahmud Ashraf said CLT was being manufactured in Australia for the first time, and the research he was undertaking was needed to determine its exact strength. “The funny thing is, even though it’s called CLT, the properties vary greatly depending on the type of timber you use,” he said. “Australian timbers are a little bit harder than the European ones. We expect that it will give us a bit more strength than European strength.” CLT and other engineered timber types can have a comparable strength to reinforced concrete, but they are not as strong as steel. Its main limiting factor is how far it can span – about six metres. Now there was local production of the material, Associate Professor Ashraf said, there were new possibilities for its use. “CLT has a very good future, one of the things we’re talking about now is we’re moving towards prefabricated homes,” Ashraf said. “CLT can be a real game changer. You

can make and design your house and you take everything on site and you assemble. It can be like Ikea furniture.” Builders would still be needed, he conceded, but the construction process would be faster and cheaper, even though the materials would cost more.

Cement and concrete are considered damaging to the environment due to the large amounts of energy and water needed in their production. CLT was viable to use in a detached home, Ashraf said, but at the moment the early adopters were all choosing to use the

Quick guide for first home buyers New ABS Housing Finance data released in January reveals the number of first-home buyer commitments as a percentage of total owner-occupied new housing loans has reached a six-year high of 18.3 per cent. SPORT Werribee boxer ponders pro move after a dazzling year Louise Heta’s entrance into boxing was fashionably late. But the 37-year-old from Werribee has made up for lost time with a spectacular first year in the ring, notching up a 7-3 record along the way. Heta’s career has accelerated at such a fast pace that she’s considering turning professional. “I’ve only had 10 fights, but the experience I’ve had in that time has been crazy,” Heta said. “I’ve got a couple of years left if I want to fight in the amateurs. But you never know – we might end up turning pro for a year or two and go for it.” Heta, who comes from the A-Team Boxing stable in Werribee, made a name for herself at the recent 2019 Elite Australian Championships in Burwood East, claiming a silver medal. After beating Madison Benson in the

semi-final, Heta set up a dream fight with Port Macquarie boxer Jessica Messina, a long-time Australian representative and the top ranked boxer in her class. Heta was little known, but that all changed

once she stepped into the ring with Messina and held her own. Messina took the points, but Heta went the distance and had the champ’s corner worried at times. “We went to war,” said Heta, who is coached by her husband, Kim. “We were toe-to-toe – three rounds, three minutes, it did not stop. I fought the best I’ve ever fought.” Heta’s willingness to get on the front foot and not back down drew plaudits from her opponent. Messina found Heta’s style awkward because it was similar to her own. “She came up to me in the end and said, ‘No one has really pushed me like you have in terms of being such a similar fighter to me … I feel like I’ve just fought another version of me’,” Heta said.

Bears hunt as a team By Lance Jenkinson There are no certainties on a rugby league field, but if you are a Werribee Bears player at the moment, you can depend on your teammate. Teamwork has been a feature of the Bears during their run of five wins in six games in the NRL Victoria first grade. It was on show again for the Bears in a 52-12 thrashing of Sunbury Tigers at Langama Park on Saturday. Bears coach Curtly Tuala is thrilled with the togetherness of his team in recent weeks. “I put a lot of ownership on the players this week to just do the little things right,” he said. “What that means is just keep turning up for your mate in both attack and defence. “In defence, get numbers in the tackle and work hard from marker and keeping your bodies in motion, in attack, always being an option, always being a threat.” To emphasis the point, Werribee had a massive nine individual tryscorers in its 10 tries in the win over Sunbury. Only youngster Niko Patelesio scored multiple tries with two. Tuala likes to see variety in his attack and show the opposition they have multiple avenues to the try line. That is only possible if the Bears maintain a high work rate, which they showed against the Tigers. Tuala was thrilled to see Patelesio cross the line twice and has forecast a big future for the young winger. “Niko’s a promising talent, not just for our team, but for Victoria in general,” Tuala said. “He gets himself into a zone where we call it ‘beast mode’ at training, where he just turns it on.” Werribee went into the Sunbury game undermanned due to injuries and unavailability. The Bears needed their leaders to stand up and captain Sepu Ryder and veteran Chase Hoare did just that. Whatever Ryder asked of his teammates, he was willing to do himself. “He’ll always push the question to himself and to the team about owning that responsibility on the field and making sure you’re fulfilling your role on the field,” Tuala said. “He had a lot of good passes in his game that allowed a couple of our forwards to get over. “His work rate in the middle is why I gave him the best player.” Hoare was superb in the second row. His experience brings a calmness over the Bears and he sets the tempo according to how his side wants to play. “He just gives you so much in regards to leadership and understanding of how the game should be played, especially when we get into

their green zone within their 40, playing that patient game and allowing us to build that pressure from there and sustain it.” Huteau Aukuso has been a revelation for Werribee. The front rower was the pick of the Bears’ forwards. “It’s his first year playing rugby league,” Tuala said. “He’s been giving us so much impact over the past couple of weeks. “He’s starting our sets so fast, pushing hard

up on the ball and always turning up for his brothers on the field.” Tuala also praised Werribee president Jarrod Buchanan, who does the unrewarded things behind the scenes to make life easier for the players. “He’s not just the president, he’s the manager for our team and all the things he does for the club, the boys really appreciate it,” Tuala said. Second-placed Werribee will hit the road to play Northern Thunder on Saturday.

Heta walked away from the ring feeling her hard work had paid off – but her best moment probably came post-fight. “Hearing my boys scream out my name, ‘Go mum’ – it was the most humbling and epic feeling that all the hard work has been worth it,” Heta said. “She had the experience over me, but I left it all out there and I was super proud of myself in the end. “Even though I got silver, it was like gold to me. The biggest thing for me was that I competed with her.” Heta, who has just signed with her first major sponsor, Jols Adidas, has received invites to train at the Australian Institute of Sport and attend a training camp in Thailand. Players from the NRL ladder-leading side visited 17 Victorian rugby league clubs, taking part in training, offering tips to youngsters, posing for photos and signing autographs A jersey exchange between player and club was the highlight of each visit. The Tigers were not disappointed by the challenge the visitors sent their way in an enthralling match at Soldiers Reserve on Saturday. The Tigers had to withstand a physical barrage and play out the whole four quarters to emerge with an 18-point win that halted their losing skid at two games. Tigers coach Chris Gilham was proud of the “tough grind” that secured victory. “They’re very physical, they’re an aggressive team and they like to try and intimidate,” Gilham said. “We just had to cope with it and then try to get the game on our terms a bit with our outside run and ability to score. “It was a grind, but we got there in the end.” Not until deep into time-on of the last quarter did Werribee Districts display a semblance of calm. By Lance Jenkinson A piece of individual brilliance in attack from Liam McDermott and a courageous act from goalkeeper Kieron Sharratt helped secure a crucial point for Hoppers Crossing in Football Victoria men’s state league 2 north-west. The Reds secured a 1-1 draw with Mill Park on the road at Findon Reserve on Saturday. But not before they found themselves a goal down after just a minute. But McDermott had a moment to savour later in the first half to ensure the top-of-the-ladder Reds would not go home empty-handed. Reds coach Shaun Barbara described it as one of the best goals of the season. “We were able to string two or three passes before we got the ball out wide to Liam on the right-hand side,” Barbara said. “He got past a defender, came inside and then checked back around him … their keeper got caught off his line and came too near the front post. “Liam chipped him and hit the furthest post and [it] went in. “Sometimes the boys muck around and say it was a cross, but I genuinely believe he had his head up, saw the keeper and gave it a crack. “Technically it was a great goal.” Hoppers Crossing was on the back foot from the outset, conceding a sloppy goal soon after the start. Mill Park goalkeeper Corey Walters caught the Reds’ defence napping, allowing striker Keegan Linderboom to swoop in to put the hosts in front. “It was a silly little error from us,” Barbara said. “They were playing really direct, put a long ball over the top and we got caught out.” In their first meeting back in April, the Reds were all over Mill Park in a 3-1 win. Hoppers Crossing found Mill Park a much tougher nut to crack this time around. “It was a difficult game to be honest,” Barbara said. “They’re almost a completely different side from the last time we played them. “It showed – they were a lot better.” Barbara was impressed with how well his Hoppers Crossing players reacted to going down a goal. Shuhei Hasegawa was instrumental in an attacking sense for the Reds, while Andre Ruiz steadied the side at the back. The big moment of the match came with 15 minutes to go when Hoppers Crossing goalkeeper Sharratt was caught in a one-on-one situation.
