Residents ‘betrayed’ By Esther Lauaki Western suburbs residents have been “betrayed” by the state government, following its decision to scrap plans for the $30 billion East Werribee employment precinct. The proposed Australian Education City (AEC) was to deliver universities, massive employment opportunities and new rail lines on what is the largest undeveloped parcel of publicly-owned surplus government land in metropolitan Melbourne. But planning for the project has been scrapped amid concerns over its viability. Western Metropolitan MP Bernie Finn said axing the proposal was a “tragedy” for Wyndham.

… this is the ultimate betrayal of the western suburbs - Bernie Finn

“I’m bloody angry,” Mr Finn said. “The Australian Education City would have provided thousands of jobs for residents. “We’ve lost a future for our kids … this is the ultimate betrayal of the western suburbs.” Wyndham council deals and investments, major projects director Kate Roffey told Star Weekly that East Werribee remained one of the state’s seven national employment and innovation clusters. “Wyndham City Council is disappointed that the Australian Education City proposal may not be proceeding but we are confident that the state government has undertaken an exhaustive process and the decision was ultimately made in the best interests of any future development. “Our priority is to see the potential for the East Werribee site recognised and used for key commercial purposes that will bring job density in future focused industries, such as research and development. “The site should not be used primarily for residential development. “This area needs to be a high-density employment area, not a place for more houses … The size and location of the site lends itself to the development of a major commercial precinct of state significance.” Late Friday, a state government statement said: “Following careful examination, the Australian Education City proposal for the East Werribee Employment Precinct will not proceed. “The Government thanks the Australian

Education City group, including local and international partners, for its time and involvement in the project and process. “With the continued growth in Melbourne’s West, the Government will undertake further work to better understand the investment

required to support the region’s transport infrastructure needs, particularly in light of its commitment to the Suburban Rail Loop and Melbourne Airport Rail Link. “The Government acknowledges the importance of strengthening ties between

universities and industry in Melbourne’s West, and increasing job opportunities.” The state government has refused to divulge why the project has been scrapped, or whether compensation will be paid to the Australian Education City group.

Shake-up for city centre parking By Alesha Capone Wyndham council is set to overhaul parking in and around Werribee’s city centre under a new strategy. Mayor Mia Shaw said the council had developed the new strategy, to be rolled out within the next 18 months, in consultation with businesses and residents. The strategy includes building 467 new public parking spaces, plus an additional 904 private parking spaces specifically for new businesses and residences, at the Werribee ‘Catalyst’ development sites.

The Catalyst sites are the two ‘Riverbend’ carparks in Comben Drive, another site on Cherry Street adjacent to the railway line and a 12-storey hotel, office and retail ‘Gateway’ hub being built on the corner of Station Place and Princes Highway. Under the strategy, the council will replace its all-day paid business parking permit system with free short-term parking for up to three hours, and a pay-per-use for longer-stay parking, within the Cherry Street, West End, Gateway, Riverbend Large and Wyndham Cultural Centre perimeter parking facilities. The system will be introduced after the

completion of the carpark within the Hunter Werribee development on the corner of Synnot Street and Duncans Road. Free parking for workers, and some free two-hour parking, in a “City Fringe Precinct” within 500 metres of Watton Street and Synnot Street, will also be available. This includes parts of Jellicoe Street, Kelly Street, Griffith Street, Salisbury Street, Dixon Avenue, Beamish Street, McDonald Street, Gibbons Street, Francis Street, Bolwell Street, Cottrell Street, Duncans Road, Church Street, Anderson Street, College Road, Wedge Street South, Watton Street, Deutgam Street, Pyke

Street, Synnot Street, Greaves Street South and Princes Highway. The strategy allows for a “City Core Precinct” for free parking, with a two-hour parking time limit. This area includes parts of Watton, Synnot, Bridge and Cherry streets. There will also be the creation of six additional on-street parking spaces for people with disabilities in the Werribee CBD, increasing the total to 61. Parking in Station Place will be changed from one hour to 30 minutes. A drop-off zone will also be introduced, and the taxi rank re-located to Comben Drive.

Smart barbies declare it’s tong time Break out the snags and try the new smart barbecues being installed at President’s Park and Bloom Street Reserve. Wyndham council recently introduced a six-month trial of smart barbecues, which are wired with sensors that record maintenance issues. Wyndham smart city portfolio holder Aaron An said the new barbecues would improve the cooking experience for locals. “Residents will also enjoy a cleaner facility because the sensor technology records regular cleaning and maintenance and if there is a fault

with the barbecue, council will receive an alert to fix the issue,” Cr An said. “This means the barbecue spends less time out of service and more time being used by the community. “The barbecues will be equipped with technology which eventually will be used to let the community know when a barbecue is available. “The barbecue use can also help council in deciding if a certain area needs more bins, lighting, water or other related amenities.” Cr An said the sensors on the hot plates

would, over time, help council to compile data on how frequently each barbecue was used. “This data will help council manage the facilities, understand if the community needs more of these facilities and indicate when they need to be serviced or replaced,” he said. “This trial will identify the benefits of such technology and, if successful, the technology is expected to be retrofitted to barbecues across the city. Police shut down a party attended by about 100 people at an Airbnb rental property in Point Cook last month. Police attended the residence, in Shield Road, about 9.55pm on Sunday, June 30. Police said they were called to the property due to loud music at the party, which was being held to celebrate the birthday of a Werribee teenager. After being called to the event, police waited for reinforcements before moving in to shut down the party. Police said they “moved on” all the party-goers. Police said there were no gate-crashers at the party. In addition, one youth alleged he was robbed at the party, which police are still investigating. In a separate incident, which occurred two days earlier on Friday, June 28, a 17-year-old boy was robbed as he walked along Lennon Boulevard in Point Cook. Two youths riding bikes confronted the teenager and demanded his mobile phone. Police said the victim tried to run away, but the two offenders caught up to him. They stole his mobile and his wallet, before riding away on their bikes. Police said the two offenders also demanded the victim tell them the pin-code to access the phone. Nature through a lens Hoppers Crossing man Bernie Flaherty enjoys using his camera to capture the beauty of nature. Mr Flaherty said he had always liked photography, but that he had become more interested in the art after retiring, thanks to his friend Richard Johnston, who had encouraged his interest in the subject after they met through a Wyndham-based cycling group. Mr Flaherty, who is also leader of the photography group at the U3A in Werribee, said he liked taking photos of subjects such as the animals at Werribee Open Range Zoo, Bungey’s Hole and Cobbledicks Ford. He has also taken photos of champion racehorse Winx and other thoroughbreds exercising on the beach in Altona; an Eastern Osprey at the K Road cliffs; and a swan and cygnets in a Point Cook lagoon.

“I like getting out and taking photos of natural things and landscapes, and we also get up early and take photos of sunrises, Mr Flaherty said. “Nature often provides such a lovely backdrop to photograph. Another one of Mr Flaherty’s pictures, showcasing the beach shacks at Campbells Cove in Werribee South,■won a prize last year in an annual photo competition run by the Grange Community Centre in Hoppers Crossing. The centre will hold the competition again this year, with the theme “Wyndham Pride. Entries to the competition close Friday, August 2 at 5pm. Tunnel vision for trains By Esther Lauaki Len Waddell is a man with a plan to tackle Wyndham’s traffic and rail woes – by going underground. The Werribee engineer of nearly 60 years, and fellow engineer Geoff Rogers, believe an underground railway line east of Hoppers Crossing to west of Galvin Road is the way to go. Their plans follow the state government’s announcement this month that it would fast-track removing the Old Geelong Road, Werribee Street and Cherry Street level crossings to be completed by the end of 2022. Mr Waddell and Mr Rogers propose connecting the existing line at Hoppers Crossing with an 8.5 kilometre tunnel to a major interchange at a new ‘Manor’ station linking the Geelong regional rail lines. “It would open up the township and un-clutter the Cherry and Werribee street crossings as well as Hoppers and Brophy’s Crossing [now Galvin Road], Mr Waddell said. The government’s preferred design to remove the Old Geelong Road crossing is to build a road bridge over the rail line, east of the existing crossing, connecting the Princes Highway to Old Geelong Road and Heaths Road. At Cherry Street, the preferred design would also include a new road bridge built east of the existing crossing, linking Tarneit Road to the Princes Highway (via the irrigation channel next to Wyndham council’s offices). The preferred design to remove the Werribee Street level crossing is to elevate the railway line over the road, with a rail bridge over the street. Mr Waddell said a tunnel would mean less interruptions during construction, no land acquisition and more investment, employment and tourism opportunities.

He and Mr Rogers drew inspiration from similar rail projects in Perth and London for their proposal which would involve building underground stations at Racecourse/Bulbans roads and another at Galvin Road. “We don’t want to look back in 20 years and wish the underground option had been taken up, he said.

“The piecemeal options do nothing for the township apart from traffic relief. The Level Crossing Removal Authority is holding community drop-in sessions this Saturday, July 13 between 10am and 12.30pm and Tuesday, July 16 between 5pm and 7.30pm at Encore Events Centre in Hoppers Crossing. See levelcrossings.vic.gov.au for details.

Wyndham council has given more than $90,000 in funding to community groups and causes in its latest round of Identity, Inclusion and Connection grants. Mayor Mia Shaw said grants of up to $5000 were presented to 24 not-for-profit groups and organisations. “Culturally and linguistically diverse communities, people from lower socio-economic backgrounds, young people and seniors are just some of the groups to benefit, Cr Shaw said. Cr Shaw said Williams Landing Scout Group had been given $5000 to help launch a food fair and activities during next year’s Cultural Diversity Week. The Victorian Immigrant and Refugee Women’s Coalition has received $5000 for the establishment of a space where women from diverse cultural backgrounds can meet to share their stories in a bid to combat social isolation. Point Cook P-9 College will receive $5000 for a project that involves painting five water tanks after working with an indigenous artist.

School needs a name By Esther Lauaki One of Tarneit’s newest schools is in need of a name ahead of its first semester next year. Residents are being invited to have their say on a new moniker for Davis Creek Primary School, the school’s interim name, and provide feedback via an online survey. Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly said the government was seeking a name that reflected the school’s unique identity, inspired local pride and made the school easily locatable.

“We’re building new schools right across Victoria because every child deserves the best education, regardless of postcode,” Ms Connolly said. “Communities can play a meaningful role in shaping the identity of their new school, ensuring each school reflects the unique character of its local community.” Ms Connolly said the school will accommodate 525 students, assisting in alleviating enrolment pressures for surrounding schools and to meet the demands

of Wyndham’s growing population. She said the interim name of Davis Creek Primary School was chosen because there is a seasonal river by this name in the proximity of Tarneit. Shortlisted names for each school have been selected by a School Advisory Group, based on factors including public interest, relevance to the local area, and the consideration of local indigenous languages. Automated external defibrillators have been installed in Woolworths stores throughout Wyndham as part of a priority roll-out program. Wyndham group manager Mark Farrington said the defibrillators were designed to be used by anyone, with clear step-by-step voice instructions that can guide members of the public through the process. “You never know when a sudden cardiac arrest might strike and in the unfortunate event that it does, having the local community able to access this treatment, could help to save lives,” Mr Farrington said. “The best medical advice tells us that access to an AED early on can greatly increase the chance of survival.” Jamie Vandenberg, of the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, said statistics showed sudden cardiac arrests are usually fatal if immediate action was not taken. “It’s critical all Australians are equipped with the skills to act quickly in these circumstances; the first three to five minutes holds the key to survival,” Professor Vandenberg said. “Access to a defibrillator can mean the difference between saving or losing a life. The defibrillator installed in Wyndham stores were supplied by Winc, in partnership with Integrity Health and Safety. Esther Lauaki

Plans to secure K Road Cliffs By Esther Lauaki Terraces for bird photography and viewing platforms taking in the Werribee River are among the proposed additions under a draft plan for the K Road Cliffs. The K Road Cliffs Master Plan, which is out for public feedback, outlines Wyndham council’s long-term plan for the iconic site. Wyndham environment and sustainability portfolio holder Heather Marcus said the draft master plan was a guide for the future of the K Road Cliffs.

‘‘

I encourage residents to provide feedback

’’

- Heather Marcus

“Based on community engagement sessions we hosted back in February, the draft master plan aims to reduce erosion and protect the unique cliff geology, protect and enhance natural vegetation and habitat, improve parking to minimise vehicle impacts on the site, and improve pedestrian access,” Cr Marcus said.

The community renewed calls for council to conduct erosion control works and establish a solid management plan of the K Road Cliffs following a landslide in April, as reported in Star Weekly. Council received a $109,000 state grant in 2016 after two council-commissioned reports revealed that natural erosion, the age and condition of trees at the site meant work was needed to improve safety. The draft master plan proposes drainage works to redirect storm water runoff away from the fragile cliff edge, two new carparks

significantly reducing the impact of vehicles and a new cliff-top walking path to connect site features. Fencing to limit access to the cliff edge, a new staircase and revegetation works on upper cliff area are also in the plan. “This draft document is now out for public feedback, and I encourage residents who live in the area, or those who visit the site, to provide feedback by completing the online survey,” Cr Marcus said. Mercy stalwarts reflect Werribee Mercy Hospital is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year – and has produced some impressive statistics along the way. Since the hospital opened in 1994, its staff have cared for more than 222,576 patients, performed more than 147,000 operations and delivered more than 45,000 babies. When Werribee Mercy opened, following the closure of Werribee District Hospital, Wyndham’s population had just passed 60,000 residents. In comparison, Wyndham’s population is now more than 210,000. Three staff members who have worked at Werribee Mercy since it opened – nurse unit manager for maternity Louise Thompson, assistant nurse unit manager Karen Wright and district midwife Stella Sidlow – have witnessed the hospital expand its services across the past 25 years to help cater for Wyndham’s booming population.

Ms Thompson said that in its first year, 600 babies were born at the hospital. In contrast, during the 2018-19 financial year, 3892 babies were born at Werribee Mercy. Ms Wright has worked in the Midwifery in the Home unit for the past 14 years. “The number of home visits we do has doubled over the past eight years, with mums going home earlier requiring more home visits,” she said. Ms Sidlow said she enjoyed hearing feedback from families. “(It’s) also nice when you meet someone in the community who remembers you from their previous birth or home visits to them,” she said. Power issue leads to rail fail By Alesha Capone The Werribee train line has recorded the second-highest number of service cancellations in Melbourne across a 12-month period, after a faulty wire caused problems with overhead power lines in May. Data from Public Transport Victoria (PTV) shows that between June last year and May this year, there were 999 trains cancelled on the Werribee line (compared to 480 cancellations within the previous 12 months).

The only metropolitan train line to experience more cancellations than Werribee was the Frankston line, which recorded 1256 cancelled services. Overall, the PTV performance report showed that during May, Metro Trains delivered 90.4 per cent of all services on time and V/Line delivered 86.4 per cent of all services on time. PTV chief executive Jeroen Weimar said May was a “challenging month” on Melbourne’s train network, following a “serious overhead power issue” at Laverton Junction, which

impacted Werribee line services across four days. Mr Weimar said an independent review, commissioned by PTV, found the problem was caused by a corrosion on a small part of the overhead power structure, causing the wire to fall. The fallen wire became tangled in a train running through the section, subsequently bringing down a large section of overhead wire. “We know this unusual incident caused significant disruption to passengers on the Werribee line over four days,” Mr Weimar said.

“As a result, Metro Trains is now replacing all insulator connectors on the Werribee line on top of the existing routine maintenance.” In addition, buses will replace trains between North Melbourne, Werribee and Williamstown from 11.15pm to the last train on Tuesday, July 23 for works to introduce high capacity metro trains. Passengers have been advised to allow up to an extra 40 minutes their journey. See ptv.vic.gov.au or call 1800 800 007 for details.

A Vauxhall started it all When Les Joyce met his future wife Joyce it was love at first sight. The Tarneit husband and wife, who dated for three years before getting married, recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Mr Joyce said he ended up meeting Joyce thanks to a pink Vauxhall Vagabond convertible, which he used to own. Joyce’s brother Fred – a car re-upholsterer by trade, who happened to see the convertible parked in front of a Melbourne cinema – told Mr Joyce he should re-upholster the vehicle. About 10 months later, Mr Joyce visited Fred to get the work done, where he met Joyce. “I got introduced to Joy and that was it,” Mr Joyce said, “I went home and I told my mother, ‘that’s the girl I’m going to marry’.” Mr Joyce said he asked his future wife’s father for permission to propose. “He asked my intentions in marrying his daughter, I said that I had a block of land and

wanted to build a two-storey house for my wife,” Mr Joyce said. “I didn’t do that – I built a three-storey house instead.” The couple married at St Andrew’s Presbyterian church in Footscay and settled in Maribyrnong. Mr and Mrs Joyce had six sons and a daughter: Shane, Rodney, Rohan, twins Dwayne and Darren, Jarrod and Belinda. They have 25 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. They moved to Tarneit about 10 years ago. Mrs Joyce said they “loved” living in the area. “When we came here, we had trouble driving on Leakes Road – nowadays an ant has to put up a sign if he wants to cross the road, it’s that busy,” Mr Joyce said. Sam’s Auskick dream Samuel Glewis was the envy of his Auskick mates when he received news that he would be in the running for Auskicker of the Year. The Manor Lakes youngster was nominated for the competition which rewards the “truly awesome participants” of the national program. Samuel’s name rang out at a Friday night match earlier this month between home team the Geelong Cats and Adelaide Crows. “I love Auskick because it’s a great opportunity to play and do what I love,” he said. He’ll be up against 22 nominees from around the country who attend Auskick programs – all vying for the NAB AFL Auskicker of the Year to be announced during grand final week. As a nominee, Samuel will present a premiership player with their medal on grand

final day and will walk in the annual parade. He will also play on the MCG at half-time. Samuel, who knows the lyrics to every club song, said his dream would be to sing Up There Cazaly at the grand final match. A $5000 grant in a NAB Reward Saver Account is up for grabs plus personal mentoring from Geelong Football Club captain Joel Selwood and AFLW star Katie Brennan. Enter the Auskicker of the Year competition before August 8 by uploading a fun short video of the player in action at home or in the backyard; kicking goals, commentating or taking a speccy. Speaking up for youth By Ali Robson Eighteen young people from Wyndham have had their voices heard in the State Parliament of Victoria. Students from Tarneit Senior College, Hoppers Crossing Secondary College and Westbourne Grammar School successfully passed Bills at the YMCA Victoria Youth Parliament. In early July more than 120 young people aged 16-25 debated on issues important to them in the State Parliament.

Hoppers Crossing Secondary College tabled its Party Safe Initiative Bill, which features a program taught in Victorian secondary schools providing a safe environment for young people to talk about drug and alcohol abuse. The team argued removing stigma helps young people make informed decisions. “We need to recognise the drug and alcohol issue that exists in Australia, said Hoppers Crossing student Harley Lewis. Students from Tarneit Senior College tabled a Bill proposing a recyclable container refund scheme to advocate for the environment.

“Helping the environment globally, starts locally, said Tarneit student, Wenny Duku. The Westbourne team proposed regulating heroin use in Victoria through a five-year heroin prescribing program to minimise harm. “Every Australian life is worth preserving and protecting Westbourne student Leala Xu said. The three Bills will be passed on to Minister for Youth Gabrielle Williams, where they will have a chance to become Victorian legislation. Ali Robson is a member of the YMCA Youth Press Gallery.

Wyndham’s worthiest community causes and projects can get a leg up through another round of the Manor Lakes Community Fund grants. Applications opened this week for the grants scheme which aims to support not-for-profit groups in putting on events or delivering projects. Since its inception in 2003 the Manor Lakes Community Fund, an annual initiative by the Dennis Family Corporation, has distributed more than $270,000 to community groups in the Wyndham area. Dennis Family Corporation chief executive Peter Levinge said previous recipients have included sporting, support and environmental groups, schools and emergency services. “We recognise the important role community groups play in connecting people and fostering community spirit within our estates, Mr Levinge said. Iramoo Community Centre based in Wyndham Vale, a 2018 grant recipient, offers a range of courses, community programs, events and services for people of all ages and abilities. Community development officer Joanne Griffiths said the grant enabled the centre to provide 13 additional workshops to learn new skills and run free community events. Applications close on Tuesday, August 6. Details: bit.ly/2XnTmdA Esther Lauaki

Sun may set on women’s project By Alesha Capone A group which offers education and social activities for women with disabilities, mental health issues and chronic illnesses is facing an uncertain future, due to a cut in funding. The Sunrise women’s groups, run by Women’s Health West (WHW), meet fortnightly in Laverton, Sunshine and Wyndham. Under the initiative, WHW also runs a group in Melton for carers. The Sunrise program, which has been running for more than three decades, is attended by about 70 women every year.

The Sunrise program is mostly funded by the state government, along with some funding from the commonwealth. But as government funding doesn’t cover the full costs of running the program, WHW has been contributing its own money to help keep the program afloat for many years. In addition, the introduction of the NDIS means Women’s Health West is set to lose about one third of the government funding it receives for the Sunrise groups. Star Weekly understands that WHW has already been forced to reduce the number of Sunrise groups it offers.

From January next year, WHW have to cease running the Melton group and it will need to review the entire Sunrise program next year. In response, WHW has launched a fundraising campaign, asking for donations from the public, to help keep the Sunrise program afloat. WHW’s strategy, advocacy and community engagement director Louise Falconer, said: “Women’s Health West’s Sunrise program has a number of tangible benefits for women in our community who are living with a disability. “We’re committed to raising as much funding as we can to ensure its longevity.”

A state government spokesperson said: “A portion of Women’s Health West Home and Community Care – Program for Younger People (HACC–PYP) funding is being transferred to the NDIS according to the number of their clients who transition to the new scheme.” The spokesperson said Women’s Health West would continue to receive HACC–PYP funding to support clients not eligible for the NDIS. Visit whwest.org.au/donate/sunrise to make a donation to support the Sunrise program.

Art prize with a heart Manor Lakes teenager John Mathet is all smiles after winning the People’s Choice Award at the Wyndham Art Prize. John, 18, said he entered the Wyndham council art competition for the first time this year with a digital painting he created on a tablet, which portrays a little girl standing alone. John was presented with the competition’s People’s Choice Award, as voted by visitors to the exhibition, last month. The award was sponsored by not-for-profit community organisation Arts Assist. John said while creating his award-winning artwork, he reflected on his own experience growing up in Kenya and South Sudan, during which he experienced conflicts, war, poverty and an interrupted education. “Overcoming all of that, and coming to a place like Wyndham, is a blessing,” he said.

John said he was grateful for the support of his family, friends and Manor Lakes College, where he is completing year 11. John said winning the People’s Choice Award was “surreal”, as he had entered the competition simply to learn from older artists and gain some exposure for his work. “The moment they told me, it was unbelievable. I was just blown away,” he said. John described the process of creating art as feeling like “being on top of the world”. “I just feel free, put anything onto the canvas and tell stories with my art,” he said. Alesha Capone

Music class is on track Young Wyndham people turned up the volume on their school holidays last week. The On Track school holiday program at Tarneit P-9 College wrapped up on Friday when students mixed with expert musicians and industry specialists. Project co-ordinator Alie Pickin said it was the third time the On Track program had been run. “On Track is a truly inspiring program that brings students together to connect through the power of music,” Ms Pickin said. “The kids are really excited and hopefully they will find a new way to express themselves

through a creative outlet and kick start them into the music industry.” The free program, supported by music company Mushroom Group, includes specialist DJ classes where students learn how to spin with internationally touring DJs and guest speakers giving advice about breaking into the music industry in Australia. Students also write, rap and perform their own music in the hip hop classes. Information: alie.pickin@mushroomgroup. com Esther Lauaki

MY WYNDHAM David and Mia Kenning, who originally hail from the UK and Taiwan respectively, recently became Australian citizens. Mr Kenning penned some thoughts for Star Weekly. How long have you been living in Point Cook? We’ve lived in Wyndham since buying our first house in Australia in 2009 and moved to Point Cook in November 2017. We decided to move as we wanted our kids to attend the fantastic Featherbrook College. We have friends in the area and really needed more space. We’ve seen a focus on building and infrastructure which is really transforming the area. Facilities such as Aquapulse and Eagle Stadium are vital for maintaining the community’s health and well-being and play a huge part in Wyndham’s livability.

David and Mia Kenning with their sons Zack, 6, and Elijah, 9.

What made you and Mia decide to become Australian citizens? We wanted to commit to Australia, both our sons were born here and feel that it has become home. My pragmatic decision came from the desire to commit not only to Australia and its people, but also to my wife and our Aussie-born sons. A willingness to adapt, learn and grow, led us on the path to Wyndham several years ago, and to today where we recited the pledge and wholeheartedly sang the anthem. It was wonderful to see so many people enjoying the day with family and friends, and to be formally

(Damjan Janevski)

welcomed so warmly into our thriving community. Every one of us has a unique story, and something special to offer Australia. Was it a hard decision? It wasn’t an easy decision to become citizens by any stretch of the imagination, or one taken at all lightly. I’ll always be as English as tea and

toast, but the toast is slathered with Vegemite goodness. It’s not all been plain sailing, and there have been times of struggle – especially when we had just arrived and had nothing but a suitcase, a head full of dreams. And when the kids came along the pressure of growing with them – learning to be parents, in a new country with just a handful of friends to help, was immense. We were blessed with visits

from my mother-in-law, who fed, cleaned and looked after us, with selfless passion, a smile, and a welcome meal. But despite our struggles the Aussie spirit was there from the start. We may not have been born here, but we were, still are, and always will be – battlers. Australia and her people have shown their commitment to us. She’s provided for me, for my family, and given us endless opportunities.

The Hoppers Crossing area should be named Tarneit in the opinion of the Werribee District Historical Society. Werribee Shire Council intends to name the area up to 21 miles away from the actual railway crossing as Hoppers Crossing to the displeasure of the historical society.

About 500 Werribee residents attended a public meeting held by the Home Owners of Werribee at Centenary Hall last week, in an effort to have their say about the spiralling home loan interest rates. However, many people walked out in disgust as the lengthy meeting turned into a political wrangle.

Residents in a Hoppers Crossing street are up in arms over what they describe as “underhanded tactics being used by a developer attempting to build units on a nearby block of land. Citing safety concerns and a development covenant banning the construction of units in the area, 10 residents of Grevillia Street have lodged objections with Wyndham council to the proposed two-unit development at the corner of the crescent and Palm Street.

After living on their Tarneit property for more than 38 years, Joe and Stella Cassar now face an uncertain future. On June 23, the couple received a letter that stated their Leakes Road property was in the path of the proposed outer metropolitan ring road and the $4.3 billion Regional Rail Link, from West Werribee to Deer Park.

In a quiet neighbourhood among other quality residences, just off Tarneit Road, this one has all the ingredients young families look for. It’s within a four-minute drive of Pacific Werribee and has three schools within a kilometre, as well as parklands close by. There are three fitted and grey-carpeted bedrooms, the large main with a walk-in robe and an en suite that matches the main bathroom in decor. The toilet is separate. Pale matte floating floorboards flow down the entry hall, leading past an open study and open lounge room on the way to the expansive, light-filled living hub where roman blinds dress multiple large windows – as they do most other windows. The kitchen, with expansive benches in dark-grey laminate, has loads of timber-look cupboards and a corner pantry, along with stainless-steel wall oven, 900mm gas cooktop and dishwasher. A large pergola above paving provides exceptional entertainment/relaxation space, and links with a good stretch of lawn edged with landscaped garden beds. A good-sized Colorbond shed is in one corner. The property, on about 530 square metres, also has gas ducted heating, evaporative cooling, solar panels and alarm system. The remote-controlled double garage has internal access via the entry hall.

Werribee falls short again as slow starts take a toll Werribee is failing to close deals in the Victorian Football League. The boys in black and gold have gone oh-so-close for three weeks running, only to come out on the wrong side of the scoreline on home turf – against Williamstown, Essendon and, on Saturday, Collingwood, losing to the Magpies by a mere three points. Incredibly, Werribee finished all three games with more scoring shots than the opposition. Werribee utility Kye Declase was left frustrated by his side’s latest loss, but believes the tide will turn before too long for a team with a 6-6 record. “No one likes to lose, especially at this time of the year,” he said. “It was very disappointing coming that close after working so hard and just not finishing off our good work.” While the narrow margins of defeat would suggest finishing is not Werribee’s strong suit, quite the opposite holds true.

Collingwood’s Travis Varcoe and Werribee’s Michael Sodomaco put their bodies on the line. (Shawn Smits)

Werribee is one of the best second-half teams, but a notoriously slow starter. “We’re finishing off games strongly,” Declase said. “It’s just our first-quarter starts – we’re pretty slow there.

“We really want to focus on our starts, but for some reason we can’t get out of first gear. If we can fix that up, we’ll be a tough side to play against.” Werribee was 17 points down at quarter-time against Collingwood and that became 21 by the half. After half-time, Werribee played more assured football, dictating the terms better than it had in the first half. “They jumped us early,” Declase said. “We were a bit panicked and rushing our disposals instead of taking our time over the ball and kicking through. “It was a heated game and we were both bringing the pressure, but they just reacted quicker. Once we calmed down, we started using the ball real well and we got on top.” Unfortunately for Werribee, the comeback came up just short, even if two late Matt Munro goals made Collingwood sweat.

Injuries end comeback By Lance Jenkinson It was the walking wounded in the Point Cook changerooms after a 41-point loss to Caroline Springs in their Western Region Football League division 1 clash at Saltwater Reserve on Saturday. The Bulldogs ended the game with 17 fit players and it hampered their quest for a first victory since May 4. Key forward Alex Grigg (ankle), a forward target, and defenders Ryan Butler (migraine) and Nicholas Weir (ankle) could not finish the game and two other players had to be treated for severe cramps. After trailing by 36 points at half-time, Point Cook got back into the match with six goals to one in the third quarter to get within a kick at three quarter time. The mounting injury toll hurt the Bulldogs in the last quarter, who were out-scored 40 to one. “We ran out of numbers unfortunately,” Bulldogs coach Ian Denny said. Point Cook showcased some of its best football in the third quarter. Despite kicking just two goals in the first half, the Bulldogs came out of the half-time break full of life and seemed hellbent on registering a come-from-behind victory. The Bulldogs might have expended too much energy in the comeback, and coupled with the injuries, they had nothing left in the last term. “We actually out-ran them in the third quarter, but we might’ve run ourselves into the ground,” Denny said. Point Cook had some game-changing contributions in that quarter and there were no bigger moments than Connor McKenzie’s courageous contested mark and goal. “Connor McKenzie sat under a footy that sat up high and took a contested mark against two opposition players and went back and kicked a goal,” Denny said. “The team needed someone to inspire them a little bit and that was the sort of stuff they were doing.” Matthew Poland and Jessi Lampi were the key igniters of Point Cook’s comeback. Andrew Robinson, Poland and Lampi were superb in the middle with their strengths complementing each other well. For all the good work Point Cook did in the third, it was not enough. The Bulldogs remain second last with a 1-10 record, while Caroline Springs, 4-7, seem too far into the distance for them to catch. Point Cook has a chance to close the gap on a side above it when it visits Sunshine. Meanwhile, Point Cook is on the lookout for a new coach for 2020. After six seasons in charge, Denny has

announced he will be stepping down and clearing the path for the next coach. “The better kids in the juniors are still two or three years away [from playing seniors], so I said to the club they need to look into securing their next coach now and form a basis for those kids coming through,” Denny said. Elsewhere in division 1, Hoppers Crossing had a crucial 23-point win over in-form St

Albans, while Werribee Districts came up short by 14 points at home against Altona. In division 2, Point Cook Centrals crushed North Footscray by 50 and Wyndhamvale was too strong for Parkside in a 47-point win. In division 3, Tarneit won a hotly contested local derby by 18 points over Wyndham Suns, while Glen Orden recorded a whopping 287-point win over North Sunshine.

Inefficiency hurt Werribee, which had two more scoring shots and 11 more inside-50s. Declase was full of praise for pressure forward and goal sneak Munro. “His forward pressure is outstanding – probably the best in the comp,” Declase said. “Tackling, chase – it’s remarkable. And he’s finishing off the goals.” Dom Brew was superb in a two-way role on dangerous Collingwood midfielder Alex Woodward. Not only did Brew have 22 disposals, but he also had 16 tackles and was named best-on-ground. After three losses in a row, Werribee’s top eight spot could come under threat against second-placed Richmond at the Swinburne Centre on Sunday morning. “It’s a huge game,” Declase said. Lance Jenkinson

Western Jets dig deep for a super win Western Jets had to win mental and physical battles to hold on for a memorable nine-point win over a star-studded Sandringham Dragons in the NAB League at Downer Oval on Saturday. Leading by 34 points at three-quarter time, the Jets had to defend grimly in the last quarter to stave off a late Dragons threat and pick a up a win that will long be celebrated. Jets football operations manager Matthew Dervan declared it “a fantastic advertisement” for NAB League football. “You had a quality outfit in Sandringham, but from our point of view, we thought we put out a side that could definitely go head to head with them,” he said. “It was amazing to get the four points. It’s probably the best win I’ve been involved in at the club in a long while.” Sandringham kicked the only four goals of the a quarter that had a bit of one-way traffic about it. That prompted Jets coach Ryan O’Keefe to dig deep into his bag of tricks and swing key forward Emerson Jeka to the backline in a bid to save the game. Jeka’s defending late on was crucial to the Jets holding on to their lead. “We threw him back for the first time this year,” Dervan said. “He’s such a versatile player that he can play forward and back … it adds to his draftable characteristics, that he can play at both ends of the ground. He was pivotal with a few intercept marks.” It was a big day for Western Jets ruckman Will Kennedy, who was playing against his former side. Kennedy was arguably the best player on the ground, leading the way with 33 hit-outs and dominating aerially, with six marks to go with 15 disposals. “He stood up in the ruck against two quality Vic Metro ruckmen,” Dervan said. “He has the ability to win the ball and he is a really good decision maker as well.” Jonah Horo and Daly Andrews were the most effective midfielders for the Jets, who have moved up to third on the ladder ahead of a two-week break. Bees buzzing after a welcome return to form

Shaun Hodor was part of a water-tight Werribee City defence. (Damjan Janevski)

Has Werribee City found the potion that will bring its National Premier League 2 west season back to life? The Bees looked more like the team that stormed to the top of the ladder in the first half of the season than the one that has looked out of sorts in recent times in a 3-0 win over Melbourne Victory at Galvin Park on Sunday. Bees coach Sergio Sabbadini said he felt his side has regained a bit of its lost form in a 2-1 defeat to Bulleen Lions last week and carried the positive form into the Victory game. “We played the last two weeks pretty well,” Sabbadini said. “We feel like we were a bit robbed against Bulleen when an offside call went against us, which was their equalising goal. “We carried on with our form today and scored three goals, which was good.” After picking up just one point in four games, Werribee City needed a spark to re-light the fire. The Bees not only claimed all three points,

scored three goals and kept a clean sheet, they were assertive in their play and took the game to the Victory. “We went back to how we played in the first half of the year,” Sabbadini said. “We had control of the game and control of the ball. “The longer the game went, the better we sort of played.” The first half was fairly tense. The opening 20 minutes was an arm wrestle before Werribee City began to get on top. A goal to Liam Brian just before the break loosened the shackles for the Bees. The Bees came back out after half time and dominated the play. Goals to attackers Lisandro Paz and Jake Butler ensured a much-needed win for Werribee City. “It was pretty positive in the rooms before the game and after the game it was obviously great,” Sabbadini said. “It gives them a bit of belief in themselves

Big year for hoops star

and what we’re trying to do.” The big adjustment that Werribee City has made in recent weeks has been the move of Tyler James to the midfield. James has been dominant at right back, but a move was needed freshen up the midfield. “We played him in midfield last week against Bullen and he played the role really well, so we left him there this week,” Sabbadini said. “He gives that extra bit of pace across the middle.” Sabbadini was full of praise for his defence, including goalkeeper Nikola Kostandinoski and the back four of Julyan Collett, Shaun Hodor, Nick Bavcar and Sam McCall. Werribee City is sitting in second spot on the ladder, three points back from top side Moreland Zebras. The Bees will travel to play the Whittlesea Ranges on Saturday at Epping Stadium, a venue they won at earlier in the season when they toppled Melbourne Victory first time around. Lance Jenkinson

By Lance Jenkinson Up-and-coming Point Cook basketballer Paul Tsapatolis has already had a year to savour. But the 17-year-old is hoping the second half of the year will provide even more excitement. Tsapatolis played a significant role in Victoria Metro’s under-18 men’s team winning gold at the Basketball Australia junior national championships in Townsville in April. The towering centre was a powerhouse for the Big V, averaging 11.2 points and 9.2 rebounds a game across the tournament. He was also hard-nosed in defence, averaging 1.6 blocks and a steal a game. Tsapatolis represented Vic Metro twice in the under-16s and this was his second effort with the under-18s. “I reckon it was my best nationals out of the four years I’ve had,” Tsapatolis said. The gold medal will be a constant reminder for Tsapatolis of the mayhem that took place in the final against South Australia. Vic Metro was seemingly down and out, trailing by as much as 17 points in the second half, but it fought its way back to claim victory in dramatic circumstances. “It was a remarkable win and I won’t ever forget that,” Tsapatolis said. “The celebrations were just crazy. “We were all getting around each other and we got a 20-litre bucket full of ice and tipped it on our coach. “We stayed up all night enjoying our victory and probably didn’t get to bed until 5am.” Even staring at the massive deficit, Tsapatolis never gave up hope on Vic Metro making a comeback in that incredible match. The youngster from the Keilor Thunder harked back to the hard work the team had put in before the championships and the bond among the players as reasons why Vic Metro could claim the prize after being in a dire situation. “I believed it,” Tsapatolis said. “All our hard training and work got us belief to win that game. “There’s always a rivalry when we play an Adelaide team. It was unbelievably good to win that game.” Aside from heartily enjoying the spoils of victory, Tsapatolis had an even greater reason to smile soon after the nationals when he was invited to tryout for the Australian under-17 squad. He went into the camp full of confidence and made the final cut to represent Australia at the under-17 Oceania Championships in New Caledonia next month. “I had a great nationals, so I was feeling good about myself getting a try-out call,” he said. “The fact that I got chosen says that all of my hard work has paid off.” 44 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 10, 2019

Soccer

It was a Saturday evening to forget for Point Cook, losing 3-0 to Williamstown in their Football Victoria men’s state 3 north-west clash at Saltwater Reserve. The Jets coughed up two goals in the first half and another in the second half rubbed salt into their wounds. Hoppers Crossing earned a point on the road at Fitzroy City in state league 2 after a 1-1 draw. Truganina Hornets enjoyed a 1-0 win over local rivals Laverton in state league 4, while West Point went down 3-0 to Barnstoneworth United in state league 5.

Football

Werribee Centrals continued on their merry way in the GDFL Football’s top flight. The Centurions had a runaway 83-point win over North Geelong on the road at Osborne Park to make it four wins in a row. Reece Miles kicked four goals for the Centurions, while Ben Leonard and Matthew Miller added three apiece. The fourth-placed Centurions will host league leaders Thomson in a mouth-watering contest at Galvin Park on Saturday.

Netball

Young centre Paul Tsapatolis is an imposing figure on a basketball court. (Joe Mastroianni)

It hit home for Tsapatolis that he would be representing Australia when he got his hands on a team shirt bearing his name. “The thing I valued most was seeing my surname on the back of an international jersey,” he said. “That was incredible.” Tsapatolis will be aiming for the starting centre role for Australia. But the Maribyrnong College year 11 student will play any role deemed necessary for the team as the players strive to become Oceania champions.

“It’s just an honour, at the end of the day, to play for my country,” he said. Tsapatolis is the July nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and or national levels. Tsapatolis will receive $1000 and other prizes, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, to assist him in achieving his sports goals.

City West Falcons are not being weighed down by the chase for an undefeated Victorian Netball League championship division season. The Falcons made it a perfect 15-0 start to the season with a hard-fought 55-47 win over Peninsula Waves at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Wednesday night. MOTOR Honda adds style to the HR-V By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring From the ubiquitous ‘postie bike’ to the Civic hot hatch and NSX hybrid supercar, not to mention motorcycles, lawnmowers and generators, Honda has spent half a century keeping up with Australia’s automotive needs. Included in this august line-up is the compact HR-V, the world’s most popular sports utility vehicle, which has undergone an extensive upgrade following its introduction Down Under in 2015. Included is a new variant, the RS, designed for the sporty driver who wants a more edgy experience behind the wheel. Now in four model grades – VTi, VTi-S, new RS and VTi-LX – across the range styling takes on the very stylish cues of the latest Honda Civic, including a new front bumper and grille, along with LED headlamps from VTi-S. Power comes from a 1.8-litre, i-VTEC four-cylinder engine mated with a revised continuously variable transmission with stepped ratios, designed to deliver driving performance and fuel economy. All grades are front-wheel drive. The new HR-V comes to market from $24,990, plus on-road costs, with the VTi automatic and tops out with VTi-LX auto at $34,590. The new RS, the test vehicle, slots in at $31,990.

Styling

First introduced in 1995, the HR-V stood out from an increasingly gathering crowd with its somewhat quirky appearance. The year 2005 saw a change of character. Gone was the square,

a two-door effect, the styling has been retained in the latest iteration. The RS rolls on 18-inch alloy wheels.

Inside, the feeling for occupants is of space. An elevated driving position offers excellent visibility, as well as making getting in and out of the car easy for a range of drivers. The load area is fully flat when the rear seats are folded down, a very useful feature which is surprisingly rare in SUVs from other marquee brands. A clearly set-out instrument cluster is designed to involve the driver and front-seat passenger in a unique driving experience. This includes feedback to the driver via an illuminated speedometer ring which changes colour to match how economically the car is being driven – green for good, naturally. RS occupants are cosseted in seats, heated at the front, wrapped in quality leather with bases lengthened for the kind of comfort usually only found in luxury sedans. A leather-bound sports steering wheel is home to paddle shifters, while pedals are fitted with anti-slip alloy pads for grip in spirited driving manoeuvres.

Safety

HR-V utilises Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure technology for occupant safety, while side impact protection and front, side and full-length curtain airbags are standard across the range. Honda’s innovative Lane Watch makes a return to HR-V. Using a camera in the passenger-side mirror it displays live video on the 7-inch display screen giving an 80-degree view of left-lane traffic to help drivers monitor blind spots if they haven’t set-up the door mirrors correctly.

The standard reversing camera can display three different angles – normal, top-down and wide, to enhance visibility when reversing. A very handy feature. HR-V is equipped with standard anti-lock braking, electronic brake distribution and brake assist. Other standard active safety features include vehicle stability assist, motion adaptive EPS, hill start assist and an emergency stop signal.

Driving

The HR-V RS 1.8 litre, i-VTEC four-cylinder

engine is mated to a CVT with sequential paddle shifters. Fuel economy is claimed 6.7 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined urban/highway cycle. Our test-car consumption used 11 litres per 100 kilometres in town and 5.2 on the motorway. Unique RS damper and spring rates in this HR-V deliver a more rewarding drive with flatter cornering, greater control and a more stable ride than many small SUVs, while a new variable steering gear ratio enhances low-speed manoeuvrability with steering wheel movement reduced from 2.79 (in non-RS grades) to 2.38. The sharply raked rear window limits the driver’s view behind. However, the fuel tank’s positioning under the front seats, as opposed to the more usual spot beneath the rear seats, enables the HR-V to carry 437 litres of cargo with the seat backs up and 1462 litres with rear seats down. Also, Honda’s innovative Magic Seats, with up to 18 configurations, mean carrying bulky or odd-shaped items is a breeze. An electric parking brake on the centre console releases automatically when the car moves off and an adjacent nifty ‘brake hold’ button making the driver’s life more relaxing in stop-start situations.

Summing up

Over the years, the HR-V has continued to change with the times for the better. The addition of the RS to the range offers the driver the chance to enjoy a little ‘sport’ with a small SUV.
