■ Werribee, Cherry street removals part of three-in-one deal ■ Operation aimed at minimum disruption to community

Hoppers’ crossing to go By Alesha Capone The Monte Villa Motor Inn on Old Geelong Road could be demolished as part of the removal of the Hoppers Crossing level crossing. The state government last week announced it will fast-track removal of the Hoppers Crossing level crossing, with completion scheduled for the end of 2022. According to artists impressions of the state government’s preferred design, a new road bridge would be constructed over the current site of the Monte Villa Motor Inn, directly connecting Old Geelong and Heaths roads with the Princes Highway.
Treasurer Tim Pallas last week revealed the preferred design for the Hoppers Crossing site, in addition to the preferred designs for the Werribee Street and Cherry Street level crossing removals. Mr Pallas said that at the last state election, the government had promised to remove the Hoppers Crossing level crossing by 2025, but the project had been moved forward. The removal of the crossing, which is located on Old Geelong Road, will be carried out alongside works to remove the two Werribee crossings, with construction set to start next year. At Cherry Street, the preferred design will
see a new road bridge built east of the existing crossing, linking Tarneit Road to the Princes Highway via what is currently the irrigation channel next to Wyndham council’s offices. The preferred design to remove the Werribee Street level crossing will elevate the railway line over the road. Mr Pallas said it was hoped that removal of the three level crossings at the same time would “minimise disruption to the community”. Mr Pallas said one private business might have to be acquired to make way for the Hoppers Crossing level crossing’s preferred design and that the Level Crossing Removal Project (LCRP) was involved in “preliminary
discussions” with the business. He declined to name the business. Mr Pallas said the cost of removing the level crossing would not be known until tenders were submitted. He said the LCRP and the state government would consult the community about the preferred designs for the level crossing removals. The owners of the Monte Villa Motor Inn did not respond to Star Weekly’s request for comment. Details: levelcrossings.vic.gov.au ■ More

Cafe parking fine plea rejected By Alesha Capone The owner of Bruno’s Deli and Cafe in Werribee is unhappy with Wyndham council about a parking fine. Mario Muraca, who is legally blind and uses a walking stick, said he was “very disappointed” with the council after it issued his daughter with a fine for being double-parked as she stopped her vehicle in front of the deli on March 13. Mr Muraca said his daughter only stopped to let him get out of her car because they had been unable to find a parking spot close to the deli.

- Mario Muraca
“My daughter drove up to the roundabout and came back and stopped out the front of the shop, on the road,” Mr Muraca said. “I was in and out of the car in about 30 seconds, with my walking stick in one hand and some custards in the other.” A few weeks later, Mr Muraca’s daughter
received a $97 infringement notice from the council. Mr Muraca and his daughter requested that council review the fine, but received a letter last month saying the review had been unsuccessful. “I was willing to accept a warning, and don’t do it again, but I said to the lady (at council), ‘I’ll pay it, but I’m very disappointed’,” Mr Muraca said. “It’s alright for the council bigwigs to go to dinner at our (ratepayers’) expense, but they show no compassion for someone with a disability.”
Wyndham corporate affairs manager Emily Keogh said that after a review of the infringement, a decision had been made to uphold the fine issued to Mr Muraca’s daughter. “In this particular incident, photographs confirm that the car was illegally double-parked behind angle parks, blocking the lane for oncoming traffic, posing a safety risk,” Ms Keogh said. “Bruno’s Deli staff have access and staff parking at the rear of the store via Synnot Street.”

Mr Down has been working for Sottiles Pizza and Takeaway in Werribee for about 25 years. “I just came in one day, they tried me out and I have been here ever since,” he said. “I love driving, it keeps me going. “I might be nearly 80, but there’s nothing wrong with me.” Mr Down said that after his decades in the job, he doesn’t need a GPS or internet mapping
system to help him navigate around Werribee and Hoppers Crossing, and that he enjoys listening to the radio as he drives around. Sottiles owner, Nunzio Materia said Mr Down was just as quick – if not quicker – at delivering pizzas than his other delivery drivers. “He is a good worker, he always knows where to go and is always available to work weekends,” Mr Materia said. When he’s not delivering pizzas, Mr Down volunteers for the Red Cross, driving cancer

The state government has announced it will make the You Yangs Regional Park, which is located near Little River, a mining-free zone. Minister for Resources Jaclyn Symes said last month that Earth Resources Regulation – which sits within the Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions – would place an exemption on the park to restrict minerals exploration licencing in the area. “The You Yangs are important to many local people, the indigenous community and visitors across Victoria – and we’re proud to be protecting it from mining so people can enjoy the area for many years to come,” Ms Symes said. The regional park covers part of the southern area of the You Yangs, a granite range that rises from the Werribee Plains. The site is popular for its bushwalking, mountain biking and horse riding trails. The park, which is managed by Parks Victoria, is home to koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, brush-tail possums, echidnas as well as more than 200 species of birds. The You Yangs also support a rich variety of plant species, such as Manna Gum, Yellow Gum and River Red Gum, as well as the endangered Brittle Greenhood Orchid. The name You Yangs comes from the the Aboriginal word “Wurdi Youang” or “Ude Youang” meaning big mountain in the middle of the plain. Lara MP John Eren welcomed the exemption. “It’s good news for everyone that the You Yangs will now benefit from better protections,” he said. Alesha Capone

New ALDI plan for Point Cook By Alesha Capone
Tony’s in a spin at talent comp Tony Henwood’s 14 grandchildren can confidently claim to have a cool grandfather. Mr Henwood, of Hoppers Crossing, has been a DJ since 1978 and has his own mobile disco. He is also one of 400 competitors chosen out of 10,200 nationally to take part in the annual Your Shot DJ talent search. At age 60, Mr Henwood is the oldest competitor to make the cut. His alias for the competition is “DJ Gramps”. He will play a 25-minute set during the Your Shot state finals, to be held in Melbourne next month. Mr Henwood said he was looking forward to trying out the latest DJ equipment from sponsor Pioneer during the event – a far cry from when he started out in the industry. “Back in the early days, DJ equipment was often hard to find, and was often handmade – I made my own mixer and amplifier,” he said. Across the years, he has also moved from using records, cassettes and CDs to digital music programs. Mr Henwood said his favourite music to play included rock, contemporary, EDM, techno and house. The Victorian finals of Your Shot will take place on August 10 and 11, see www. yourshot.com.au for details.

A planning permit application to build a $4.8 million retail and food hub in Point Cook, including an ALDI supermarket, has been lodged with Wyndham council. The application, from Leading Edge Property Group, proposes to build the hub on vacant land bordered by Hacketts Road, Dunnings Road and Steinway Street. The application also includes a food and drink premises measuring 500 square metres; the sale of packaged liquor and 102 car parking spaces. The ALDI supermarket would be about 186 square metres in size. The proposed food and drink premises would be located in the northern part of the site, with a building comprising five tenancies and an outdoor dining area to the east. The site of the proposed retail and food hub is located within the Point Cook West Precinct Structure Plan (PSP), which was prepared by the Growth Areas Authority (now the Victoria Planning Authority) to guide development of land located within the precinct. The PSP earmarks the vacant land bordered by Hacketts Road, Dunnings Road and Steinway Street as a potential location for a convenience centre. A traffic report prepared to accompany the application stated that traffic generated by the ALDI supermarket was anticipated to consist of about 109 vehicles during the morning peak period and about 218 in the afternoon peak period. It was expected that traffic generated by the development “will be comfortably accommodated within the surrounding road network without causing any appreciable traffic impacts not unforeseen,” the report stated.

Council’s $140m works splurge By Esther Lauaki A new library for Williams Landing and major road and open space upgrades are among the highlights of a $140 million capital works allocation in Wyndham council’s Annual Plan and Budget. Council last week adopted its 2019-20 budget which included $1.2 million towards the new library, $6.9 million to complete the redevelopment of Wyndham Park and $900,000 to upgrade signals at key intersections. Mayor Mia Shaw said it looked like “an
exciting year ahead for Wyndham. “This year we’ve allocated almost $140 million to building the infrastructure our community needs for roads, community centres, sporting reserves, and more, Cr Shaw said. “The plan also outlines our vision, plans and strategies that will guide us over the coming year, and into the future. Some big ticket items included $11 million for various road reconstructions and resurfacing across the municipality, $15.57 million to the provision of kindergarten and children’s care services and $11.29 million for maternal child
health and immunisation services. Another $4.57 million will be spent on providing in-home care support to enable older residents to live independently, $1.74 million on tennis courts, oval and pavilion upgrades at Galvin Park and $1.37 million for community grants. Cr Shaw said there were many road works under way across the municipality and council re-prioritised its program to minimise the impact on motorists as well as making sure that there will be contractors available to do the work in a timely manner.
“This budget delivers not only essential infrastructure projects such as road and park upgrades, it also features a range of city-shaping projects that will contribute to the overall liveability of the city now and into the future, Cr Shaw said. Total rates for 2019-20 will increase by an average of 2.5 per cent in line with the state government imposed rate cap. However, individual properties will be impacted differently depending on the outcome of annual valuer general property valuations. Details: wyndham.vic.gov.au

Goat shot by arrow at You Yangs By Alesha Capone
Teen ready to take to the sky
A goat shot with a bow and arrow in the You Yangs National Park has been euthanased by Parks Victoria rangers. A bushwalker found the injured goat, with the arrow still lodged in its body, on Sunday, June 23. Parks Victoria Western Basalt district manager Paul Wallace said his organisation had been told of an incident involving a feral goat being shot by a member of the public with a bow and arrow.
Causing animals to suffer can be a criminal offence - Paul Wallace
“The incident was attended by two park rangers who euthanased the animal,” he said. “Parks Victoria has been in communication with Victoria Police and an investigation into the matter is ongoing. “Causing animals to suffer can be a criminal offence under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986.” The bushwalker who found the goat posted about the incident on a Point Cook community Facebook page, writing that whoever shot the goat had left it to “suffer”. In Victoria, a person found guilty of cruelty to animals can face a maximum of 12 months in jail or a fine of up to $40,297.50. Under law, the definition of animal cruelty can include wounding, mutilating, torturing, tormenting or terrifying an animal; causing or endangering pain or suffering; and failing to provide treatment.

Werribee teenager Rebecca Johnny is well on her way to a high-flying career as a flight attendant. Ms Johnny, 19, arrived in Australia as a young child with her family – who are from the Karen ethnic group – as refugees from Myanmar. Ms Johnny said that she was about nine years old when she decided that she wanted to become a flight attendant, after seeing “beautiful” flight attendants in films. “As I get to know more about flight attendants and have more knowledge, the thing that inspired me is the way they care for passengers and their hard work in trying to make passengers feel comfortable,” she said. Ms Johnny is now studying a Certificate III in Aviation at the William Angliss Institution in Melbourne. “The thing I enjoyed most about this course was meeting new friends and new teachers,” she said. “I also like that I’m learning new things, so I get different challenges every day.” Along with her fellow students, Ms Johnny recently spent a week in New Zealand for training at facilities used by major airlines. “My ultimate career ambition is to become a cabin manager,” she said. “I would be the first person to become a flight attendant in my family.”

Wyndham to be crossing free By Alesha Capone Wyndham council and residents have welcomed news that Wyndham will be level crossing-free within three years. Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw said the council “had been in regular talks with the state government to get the Hoppers Crossing removal on the next package of funded removals included in this year’s state budget”. “The state government heard our calls when we spoke of the delays our motorists experience every day – especially during peak hours – due to the complex road connection around this crossing and funded the early removal of the crossing,” Cr Shaw said. “We encourage Wyndham residents to have their say on the project’s design options through the community consultation process.” The preferred design for the Hoppers Crossing crossing will involve construction of a new road bridge over rail tracks, east of the existing crossing and directly connecting Princes Highway to Old Geelong and Heaths roads. At Cherry Street, the preferred design will see a new road bridge built east of the existing crossing, linking Tarneit Road to the Princes Highway via what is currently the irrigation channel next to Wyndham council’s offices. The preferred design to remove the Werribee Street level crossing will elevate the railway line over the road. After Star Weekly posted the news on Facebook last week, some residents said it was good news for the area. Jason commented: “This is positive news compared to the previous anticipated completion date of 2025.” Ramesh wrote: “This is good news for us residents here in the City of Wyndham.”
But other Facebook users wrote that the level crossing removal would create “major inconvenience” on the surrounding roads during construction. “I hope they’ve planned it well – I can only see chaos, the people who have the big plans don’t ride the trains,” Michelle wrote. Liz wrote: “Why the hell wasn’t it done at the same time as all the road works around the hospital intersections? Oh that’s right inconvenience as many people as possible as often as possible!” Paolo commented: “The businesses there along Old Geelong Rd will get screwed over no matter which design they choose.”

Parking pain at Aircraft: survey
. . . from the Mayor
By Goya Dmytryshchak Nearly all commuters surveyed have identified car parking as the worst problem at Aircraft train station in Laverton. The RACV received 418 responses to its ‘Fix my station’ survey on how the station could be improved. Aircraft has been ranked as either the worst or second worst in Victoria since 2015 in the RACV’s biennial On Track survey. In 2015, the station was ranked the state’s worst with a rating of 4.86 out of 10. In 2017, commuters disliked Aircraft even more and its rating fell to 4.20. It only dropped its worst-place ranking because Donnybrook was rated more poorly. The RACV’s Stuart Outhred said in the latest survey, 97 per cent of commuters wanted to see improvements in the carpark. Three quarters called for more parking and 53 per cent wanted the parking area to be sealed. Most respondents called for the construction of a multi-storey carpark. “Commuters feel the station is outdated, neglected and unsafe,” Mr Outhred said. “Station users are calling for a range of access improvements to be made for pedestrians, bicycle riders, public transport and people with disabilities. “Survey participants raised concerns about their comfort, stating the station requires improvements to its appearance and lacks sufficient shelter. “Station users also called for digital timetable displays.” Forty two per cent of commuters

called for more bus services to the station and 40 per cent said there should be more frequent train services. More than half wanted toilet facilities, 66 per cent called for more shelter and 42 per cent identified a need for more CCTV cameras. When it came to possible improvements around the station, 44 per cent wanted more food options and restaurants and 39 per cent more retail outlets. “Station users also raised concerns about the surrounding streetscape, calling for a more welcoming aesthetic, particularly at the shopping precinct, as well as safety and access improvements,” Mr Outhred said. Hobsons Bay councillor Colleen Gates said the council wanted the state government to fund improvements at Aircraft as part of the level crossing removal. In March, the council resolved to repeat its request that the government improve the carpark and facilities in and around Aircraft. The level crossing is scheduled to be removed by early 2020.

Farewell to a dental friend
E-waste ban now in force
By Alesha Capone Dentist Dr Pauline Durham is retiring after more than four decades of caring for the teeth of many Wyndham residents. Dr Durham, who started at the Werribee Dental Clinic after university, celebrated her final day of work last month. Dr Durham said she had greatly enjoyed working at the clinic for the past 41 years. She said she would miss her patients most of all, including the families she has treated for three generations. “I’ll miss everyone, I’ll miss my patients – they’re lovely,” she said.
‘‘
Wyndham residents can now dispose of their e-waste in a safer, greener way as a landfill ban begins this month. The state imposed e-waste in landfill ban was introduced to ensure valuable materials left inside electronic items can be safely recovered and reused, while reducing the damage on the environment and human health. From this week, any item with a plug, battery or cord can no longer be placed in kerbside bins and instead must be deposited at a designated e-waste drop-off point across the municipality. Werribee MP Tim Pallas said the state government invested $16.5 million to help councils across the state upgrade their e-waste collection and storage facilities, and deliver an education program to support the ban. “With this boost to e-waste collection sites, Wyndham residents should have access to at least one easy drop-off point close to home,” Mr Pallas said. “There is now a combined network of more than 1000 locations for Victorians to drop off a range of e-waste items across the state including Officeworks sites and mobile phone collection sites such as the Mobile Muster.” E-waste covers everything from old mobile phones, computers, audio devices, refrigerators and other white goods, hair dryers, TVs, heaters, and air-conditioners. “You learn so much from them, talking to them, and that’s the part I’ll miss.” Dr Durham said she would also miss her colleagues. “I’ll be popping back to visit them, they’re like family,” she said. Dr Durham said when she started at the Werribee Dental Clinic, it was in Watton Street, before moving to its current Cottrell Street location during the mid-80s. “I’ve seen Werribee change a lot,” she said. “It was like a country town when I first started, now it’s a suburb.” Dr Durham said she was looking forward to travelling during her retirement and spending more time with her family. “It’s going to be an adventure, I’ve got to find out what I’d like to do, now that I’m not working,” she said.

MY WYNDHAM Sue and Peter Jones volunteer extensively within the Little River community, and are familiar faces to anyone who visits the Little River Mechanics Institute Hall and Library. They chat with Alesha Capone. How long have you lived in Little River?
up and running before Superintendent La Trobe and his family sailed into Port Phillip in October 1839. Peter: Little River’s railway history is another reason we moved here. It’s great to be six minutes’ walk from the train and we hope to see our heritage bluestone railway station come back to life … before too long.
of our two active churches and, through this, I also heard about our Historical Society. We are also members of our You Yangs Walking Group Landcare, Railway Station Revival and are proud to go to a seniors lunch at our wonderful country pub each month. I designed and painted the History float for the ‘150 years – a township celebrations’ parade and painted the centenary backdrop in the Mechanics Institute Library Hall. I write a regular monthly piece on heritage for the Little River News Review Review. Sue: I go along to Little River Share one Sunday a month, a sort of money-free community sustainability event where we exchange surplus fruit, vegetables and seedlings. We also share all sorts of community information and gardening ideas. Peter: Our major commitment is to the Mechanics Institute Library. We run this with Lynne Morse and with the help of Tallis, a young volunteer from Tarneit. About a year after we arrived we heard that the LRMI (Little River Mechanics Institute) was looking for a new librarian and offered ourselves. With Sue’s background in community services and mine in architectural history and landscape, we were certainly not librarians but that doesn’t seem to be a problem. Both the hall and library are wonderful heritage for Little River. The library collection includes a wide range of old and twentieth century books and a complete collection of the Little River News Review from 1959.
Tell me about your involvement in community organisations. Peter: I’m a member of the congregation of one

Peter: Twelve years this September. Sue: We moved here from Williamstown. Our two daughters are settled with their own families and we needed a smaller house and bigger garden. We ended up being half-way between them, with one in Yarraville and the other in Ocean Grove.
Peter: Well it’s still the same welcoming small community. The biggest change has been new buildings around the town and out in the farmlands. I’m a painter, photographer and historian, and the contrast between some of the landscape views I photographed in 2007, and the disappearance of old-timers with their stories today, is significant. The sweeping views of the grasslands and the You Yangs and Anakies, whatever way you come into Little River, is one of our strongest reasons for moving here. Sue: The amount of building has been a big change and we’re also thinking about the changes ahead. Avalon Airport is one of the best things happening … it is going to make it really important that we plan ahead for this whole district, for things like low housing density and keeping open spaces for farming and natural countryside between Geelong and Melbourne. What do you like most about the area? Sue: We love this grassy, dry country, we spend as much time as we can walking with our dog

and friends. Peter: Little River’s history is close to the surface, this goes for the ancient Aboriginal history and important Wadawurrung sites in the You Yangs and along the river, and for all the layers of settlement since then. There are still families in the district who are descended from the earliest settlers and our History Society keeps learning more about those days. Sue: We’re fascinated with the Travellers Rest chimneys and ovens overlooking the Little River, Old Melbourne Road crossing. It was

Park pavilion unveiled Wyndham council has officially opened the $1.95 million Galvin Park Tennis Pavilion in Werribee. The council held a ceremony to showcase the state-of-the-art pavilion and nearby carpark last month. Wyndham sports development portfolio holder Peter Maynard said the pavilion would support the growth of sports opportunities in the community. “The pavilion has all of the most modern features and design including an accessible pavilion with multiple changerooms, 100 square metres of community space and plenty of parking,” he said. “This new pavilion will provide greater space for community activities
and opportunities for a greater diversity of sports in Wyndham.” Cr Maynard said Werribee Centrals Tennis Club would use the pavilion for club functions, competitions and training. In its 2018-20 budget, which was released last month, the council allocated $1.74 million for the replacement and upgrade of the tennis courts, oval and pavilions at Galvin Park. “It is vital that we continue to provide opportunities to promote engagement in sport and encourage our residents to live healthy and active lives, while increasing their connectedness to our community,” Cr Maynard said.

Five talented singers-songwriters from Woodville Park Primary School have made such an impact on a television production crew that they will be featuring in a programme on Friday. In addition, one of the children has accepted an offer to join the cast of the children’s show ‘Stax’ and will be a regular performer.
The Federal Treasurer, Mr Keating, warned Australians that the country could be facing another two or three years of restraint and discipline to bring its foreign debt of more than $100 billion under control. Mr Keating made the statement during a Werribee Labor Party dinner at the Altona Civic Centre, last Wednesday night.
If a car is stolen in Melbourne, there’s a good chance it will be found in Werribee, new research has found. Figures released last week by the RACV show that Werribee is second on the list of dumping grounds for the cars stolen across Melbourne, bettered only by Coburg/Moreland.
Wyndham landowners will be among hundreds to have their properties compulsorily acquired by the State Government to allow the construction of two major road and rail projects. More than 350 properties face the move, including 152 in the path of the proposed 93-kilometre Outer Metropolitan Ring/ E6 Transport Corridor from Werribee to Thomastown.

Business of winning New Werribee Football Club coach Mark Williams shares his thoughts on leadership and your business. them, hold their hand, then give constructive feedback and let them grow. Too many managers hold the reigns too tight, restricting the development of their underlings. One of the greatest achievements of my coaching career has been six coaches/players who have gone on to become AFL senior coaches, including Alistair Clarkson and Damien Hardwick.
(Damjan Janevski)
Senior coaching is a great honour which comes with huge responsibilities. Trying to achieve the ultimate goal of winning a premiership while living in a high-pressured, media-focused and publicly scrutinised bubble is a difficult environment for anyone. Imagine every day at work, being critically analysed and evaluated. Well that’s the life of an AFL coach. We can all learn many great life lessons from the sporting fields which are completely transferable to the business world. Every sporting team and each team you work with in your day-to-day jobs have similar characteristics and needs. This is “The Business of Winning”. Over the years I have noticed there are five key issues which, when acknowledged and addressed, will help your business to become a Champion Team which continually pushes to lift the bar. 1. Recruit a diverse workforce The best teams are made up of a workforce which embraces diversity and brings a point of difference. With each team member complimenting each other and not just being clones. In the football world this is easily seen by young and old, short and tall, fast and endurance-types, inside tuff nuts and outside runners as well as those that can jump on people’s heads to take a screamer and those just happy to do their job to shut down the opposition’s best players: role-players. Some are leaders and some are followers – we need them all. Understanding some takes time – develop them, support them.
your organisation must have relationships which travel above, alongside and below their position in the organisation. Building trust with each other is the key. By showing care and understanding each level of management builds belief in each other. People thinking about others, how they feel, what they are going through and acknowledging their journey, background, their struggles and achievements, builds long-lasting bonds.
2. Build the culture – the feel of the place It is important for everyone in the organisation to be on the same page. Each employee in

to look forward to coming to work. They need to have fun and enjoy the environment to produce their best efforts. Far too often great staff leave due to the fact that they have stagnated or are bored. The cost of replacing staff is enormous so spending some money, time and thought on innovative ways to motivate your people will be money well spent. 4. Develop your leaders It is vital not just to give management and leaders a title, you must also give them the opportunity to lead and the vision to chase their improvement. Let them have a go, watch
5. Set goals, hunt your opposition, track and reward progress Knowing where you’re going sets the direction for your team. Each player and every staff member wants to know “where they are at?” Where they stand? What are they going to be judged on? What are their KPI’s? What success looks like to them. Great managers recognise the need to value each of their staff and have empathy towards their career path with consistent face-to-face, real, genuine caring discussions. The need for public recognition is huge within us all, so don’t miss the opportunity to highlight even small achievements in front of your team. Share the joy and continue to reward your staff – they crave it even if they say they don’t. Finally We would all like to think that life and sport has a linear progression with a fairytale ending, but this is not true. You’ll have many ups and downs along the way but the one thing that I know is that “Perseverance Knows no Failure” – so keep at it and you too can have a Champion Team. Entry, via the aforementioned deck, is directly into the open-plan living domain, with the first encounter a nib wall ahead, behind which is a long timber desk. This is well placed, within sight of the kitchen and not impeding on lounge space. The dining zone is a charming space, with a bank of windows that capture very pretty garden vistas. It also has a door to a covered alfresco area and garden. Honey-toned timber is atop streamlined white cabinetry in the grey-tiled kitchen,
which also has white splashback tiles and stainless-steel 900mm cooker and dishwasher. The three bedrooms, two with built-in robes and each with floorboards, share a chic bathroom. This has soft-grey and white tiling, a contemporary black/white tub, matte-black tapware, walk-in shower and a raised basin on a timber-topped vanity. The alfresco area links with a long strip of lawn that will make kids and pets very happy. Running to the back fence, the lawn

Within a walk of Pacific Werribee and close to schools, station and parklands, this unit is a ripper for investors, with a long-term tenant in place. A single or young couple starting out will also have their eyes on this one. It has floorboards all through, including in the two bedrooms with built-in robes. The shared all-white bathroom attracts good light. Entry is directly into the living space which has a wall electric heater and a split-system for year-round comfort. Wall paint is warm-white and windows come with timber blinds. The kitchen has timber cabinetry and an electric upright cooker. A paved area out back is covered with shadecloth and has easy-care plantings, and the utility area is in one corner. There’s off-street parking.
On about 610 square metres, in a quiet neighbourhood close to Iramoo Primary School and several shopping centres, this updated residence is perfect for a young family starting out. Blending with its original character, the house has elements that add personality. There are three bedrooms, one with built-in robe, that share a bathroom and separate toilet. A second toilet is in the laundry. The revamped kitchen has black granite benches and splashback, an island bar, white cabinetry, and stainless-steel underbench electric oven, gas cooktop and dishwasher. Floorboards are laid in the lounge room and continue through to the kitchen-meals area. A giant timber deck out back is partially covered and looks out to dense greenery, while the backyard has lawn, a shed and a cubby house. A carport behind a roller door adjoins a bungalow and there’s a 14-panel solar system.

Directly opposite Presidents Park, with wide green spaces, sports grounds and a dog park, this is a beautifully presented residence on a block of nearly 530 square metres. It promises a family bright, shiny spaces in which to live, potential side access for a tradie’s trailer or caravan, and has spacious back and side yards – cleared and ready for imagination to take flight. The palette of greys, white and black meets today’s décor brief, while white roller blinds blend into the background for a streamlined look. Two of the four fitted bedrooms are along the entry hall, the grey-carpeted main with walk-in robe and an en suite with the vanity unit in the same dark-grey shade as all other cabinetry. The remaining two flank the main bathroom and separate toilet in a rear hallway. Across the way from the laundry (with storage), the kitchen has a stone-topped island bench, white splashback tiles and a dishwasher, underbench oven and gas cooktop. Ducted heating and a split-system take care of Werribee’s weather extremes, while an alarm system adds to peace of mind. The property also has an integrated alfresco area with grey concrete underfoot, and a double garage with internal access via the entry hall. Manor Lakes shopping centre and Wyndham Vale train station are within easy reach. 21 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 3, 2019

Storm backs women’s team as their season heats up Manor Lakes Football Club is still open for business. The Storm might have pulled their seniors and reserves teams out of the Western Region Football League open age men’s competitions, but they remain committed to their junior and women’s teams. Women’s coach Nathan Smithwick is excited by what the rest of 2019 could mean for his team as they aim to defend their premiership. “It’s unfortunate what’s happened to the men’s side, but as far as the juniors and women’s teams, it’s business as usual,” he said. “It was a hard decision, but I think it was the right decision for the club to go forward. “It’s obviously heartbreaking, but the club is not in a bad way. “We’ll come back bigger and stronger, we’ll be fine.” Manor Lakes has some work to do though if it wants to defend its women’s crown.
Manor Lakes women’s coach Nathan Smithwick. (Damjan Janevski)
The Storm suffered their first ever loss in the WRFL women’s by a point against Caroline Springs at Town Centre Oval on Sunday. Last year, Manor Lakes went through undefeated in the inaugural women’s season. Smithwick knows the competition has
improved and admits that it has been hard to get a gauge on his team because of the amount of byes and forfeits his team has faced in the opening half of the season. “It’s a bit of a funny mood at the moment,” Smithwick said before the game against Caroline Springs. “Everyone is a bit bored because we’ve only had three games in seven weeks and there was also a forfeit at the start of the year. “We don’t have a break for the rest of the year now, so we’re just looking forward to getting into it, get some match fitness and get some confidence.” Smithwick warned the rest of the league that Manor Lakes will get better. He can see an insatiable appetite to improve and not settle for one premiership. “There’s definitely that hunger,” he said. “When teams score against us, they don’t like it at all and that’s player driven.
Centrals in contention By Lance Jenkinson Werribee Centrals is starting to play like one of the big boys of the Geelong and District Football League Smiths Holden Cup. The Centurions showed no fear in a 32-point win over Bannockburn Tigers on the road at Victorian Park on Saturday. It was a coming-of-age kind of win for the Centurions, who flexed their muscle on foreign territory and in unfavourable conditions. Centurions coach Nick Smith said he “couldn’t be prouder” of his team for the incredible effort to bring down Bannockburn. “Rapt with that win,” he said. “It’s massive for us. “We got it done in tough conditions against a tough opponent. “It was a great win.” In a highly contested game brought about by atrocious weather conditions, Werribee Centrals needed to be better than the hosts in putting their body on the line and winning the hard ball to come away with a win. “If there’s one condition you don’t want to play against Bannockburn, that’d be the wet because they’re traditionally strong, physical, contested and we’d much rather play them on a dry day,” Smith said. “To beat them at their own game was pretty special really. “Guys really have to earn their money on a day like today.” Smith applauded the courage of his midfield to set the tone for Werribee Centrals. Daryl Chesterman, Brad Carlton and new recruit Reece Miles were like bulls going for the hard balls. Miles was playing his first game for the Centurions since crossing from WRFL side Manor Lakes. Defensively, Werribee Centrals was miserly, restricting Bannockburn to three goals. Chad Buck, Brayden Smith, Sam Browne and Aadyn Sleep-Dalton offered little room to the Bannockburn forwards. Sleep-Dalton’s ability to mix his offensive skills with his defence was a weapon for the Centurions. “He was just really clean with the ball in difficult conditions,” Smith said. “I’ve always said with the best players, the conditions don’t really mean much to them. “He was just one that looked like he was picking up a dry footy under pressure.” Nick Bauld led the way in attack for Werribee Centrals with three goals. His goals were crucial in a match where a mere 10 goals were kicked. Nathan Johnson, a ruck-forward, did a lot of his damage inside forward 50.

Johnson kicked two goals and provided a target, but that was only possible because Josh Sloan held down the ruck position. “For the majority of the season he’s [Johnson] been our ruckman,” Smith said. “We put him to full forward to kind of stretch teams and it’s really worked. “We’ve been using Josh Sloan in the ruck and
he’s just an athletic young guy who runs and jumps and gets midfield-type numbers. “He was fantastic again and that allows us to play Nathan Johnson at full forward.” Werribee Centrals are sitting in fourth spot. The Centurions will face a stern test against North Geelong, who beat them earlier in the year, away on Saturday.
Smithwick claims to have the best two on-field leaders in the competition in Cara Dunshea and Lindsay Newton. Dunshea, the captain, and Newton, have been driving forces with both their voice and actions on the track. “I can’t go past them for leadership,” Smithwick said. “In my opinion, they’re the two best leaders in the competition by a stretch. “They’re both very fit, very competitive and they play hard, tough football.” Kellee McIntosh, who is the team’s leading goalkicker with 27 goals, Alycia Bettels and Jess Smithwick are also in the leadership group. One of the surprise packets for Manor Lakes has been defender-turned-forward Paras Mackenzie. “She’s been incredible in only her second year of football,” Smithwick said. Lance Jenkinson
Hoppers blows its chance against Altona Hoppers Crossing kicked itself out of the contest in a seven-point loss to Altona in Western Region Football League division 1 at Hogans Road Reserve on Saturday. The Warriors had 18 shots on goal but only three on target as they frittered away chances in a low-scoring game. It was a costly loss for the Warriors, who are a game and percentage outside the top five. Nathan Williams was named best for Hoppers Crossing, while Daniel Strnak, Brandon Houlihan and Brenton Payne were the three goalkickers. Hoppers Crossing will face St Albans, one of the in-form teams in the competition, at Hogans Road on Saturday. The Saints leap-frogged Hoppers Crossing into the top five with a percentage-boosting win over Point Cook. In Point Cook’s sixth straight loss, it was beaten by 97 points at Kings Park Reserve. Werribee Districts booted 28 goals in a 169-point pummelling of bottom-of-theladder Albion at Parsons Reserve. In division 2, Wyndhamvale cruised to a 78-point win over North Footscray at Hansen Reserve. Jesse Shell led the way for the Falcons with six goals, while Joel Russell added four. The Falcons are a game clear on top of the ladder. Point Cook Centrals had the weekend off because of a forfeit by Manor Lakes, which will sit out the rest of the season. In a statement on Manor Lakes’ official social media channels, club president Shane White said: “Along with the WRFL, the MLFC will review it’s off-field structure and financial position for the reintroduction of our senior men’s football in the future.” In division 3, Tarneit had a 100-point win over North Sunshine, John Zangari booting seven goals. Glen Orden was pipped by a point away at Sunshine Heights, but kept hold of top spot after second-placed Albanvale drew with Braybrook. Wyndham Suns had a seven-point win over Laverton with John Tomelty best-on-ground. Lance Jenkinson 37 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 3, 2019

Werribee hits its stride with another convincing win Werribee Devils sent a warning to the rest of the Big V basketball women’s state championship with a resounding 92-70 win over Keilor Thunder at the Keilor Basketball Stadium on Sunday. The top-of-the-ladder Devils were scorching hot at times in their dismantlement in the chase for the minor premiership. “It was a good result for us,” Devils coach Reece Potter said. “It showed that when we’re firing, we can compete with the best teams in the competition. “Other than the third quarter, which we lost 24-14, it was a strong performance all round.” Werribee ran riot in a scintillating second quarter. The Devils piled on 36 points to 12 to break the game wide open. “We turned it on in the second and that’s where the game was won,” Potter said. “We just made a really big, comprehensive run. “It was a bit of a whitewash there. “Early on in the year, they basically did the
same to us when we played them in round two without our imports. “It was almost a reverse of that.” The Devils had a major scare when import Alisia Jenkins went down clutching her knee. It was friendly fire from teammate Georgia Tauschke who fell across Jenkins’ knee, leaving her hobbling away. Jenkins returned to the game and finished with a busy 24 points, 12 rebounds and six assists in just 29 minutes. “She wasn’t in a great space for a bit there, but she came back and performed really well,” Potter said. Sarah Elsworthy played a starring role for Altona. In a landmark week in her career when she earned a full contract with WNBL club Adelaide Lightning, Elsworthy got back to work to produce 24 points, four assists, three rebounds and three steals. Elsworthy will see out the season with Werribee. Others to impress for Werribee were Maxine
Allan with 14 points, Alexyz Vaioletama with nine points and nine rebounds and Jessica Slade with nine points and 10 rebounds. Werribee remains a game clear on top of the ladder ahead of a blockbuster bout with defending champions Sunbury Jets at Eagle Stadium on Saturday at 6.30pm. In the men’s state championship, Werribee Devils earned a split on a double header weekend. The Devils went down 109-78 to Hawthorn Magic on Saturday night, but bounced back on Sunday with a 114-97 victory over Casey Cavaliers. Imports Konor Kulas shot 47 points and seven rebounds, and David Shepard, shot 35 points and 17 rebounds. Reds rocking in top spot

By Lance Jenkinson Hoppers Crossing has an island all to itself at the top of the Football Victoria men’s state league 2 north-west ladder. The Reds are feeling good about life after clinching a 3-0 win over Moreland United at Grange Reserve on Saturday that sent them four points clear of the rest of the competition. While the position of power is comfortable for the Reds, the way they got there in treacherous weather conditions against Moreland was less so. Coach Shaun Barbara concedes the game was far from pretty. “Both teams weren’t able to play any free-flowing football because the conditions were absolutely horrendous,” he said. “I thought the referee was going to call it off when we walked out after half-time. “It was that dark, but I thought, ‘Don’t call it off now, just give us a bit longer’.” Hoppers Crossing went to the break a goal to the good after Takuya Yoshimi found the back of the net. Yoshimi has been a bit of a revelation since his promotion into the Reds’ team with goals in his past two games. “He started for a second game due to a couple of boys being injured or away and he scored again,” Barbara said. “He’s really building into the squad. “We’ve had quite a fairly cemented team on paper, but he’s been one of the boys champing at the bit behind the scenes, patiently waiting his chance. “It was an absolutely sublime finish after Jason Hayne put him through.” Steven Smart was a late inclusion for Hoppers Crossing because of an injury to Shuhei Hasgawa. Smart scored the Reds’ second goal seconds into the second half. From that point on, Barbara knew Hoppers Crossing could not be stopped. “Scoring just before half-time and 12 seconds into the second half, it settled everything for us,” Barbara said. “Then the conditions played a large part in assisting us because the wind was against Moreland … it made it difficult for them to play or kick balls long or try to get over the top of us, because it was coming straight back to them. “That second goal was really important.” Hoppers Crossing got a third goal through Hayne. Just as important for the Reds was the clean sheet, with defenders Dane Garbett, Scott Robson, Brian Chesson and James Ballantyne giving little away. The Reds went in with the mindset that Moreland United could be a danger game, but it was never really in the contest. For two straight weeks, the Reds have kept a 38 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 3, 2019

Netball
Werribee Centrals’ long winning streak has come to an end in the GDFL Netball A grade. The Centrals’ run was halted at 10 in a row by a 36-31 loss to Bannockburn Tigers at Victoria Park on Saturday. The Centrals remain on top of the ladder. They will be looking to bounce back when they travel to North Geelong on Saturday.
Hockey
Werribee has copped another hiding in Hockey Victoria men’s Vic League 1, mauled 6-1 by WestVic Hockey at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Sunday. The Tigers have lost three games in a row, conceding 14 goals and scoring one in the process. Jacob Friedl scored the consolation goal for the Tigers. In women’s Vic League 1, Holly Stewart scored for Werribee in a 2-1 loss to WestVic Hockey.

clean sheet and found multiple avenues to goal, so everything is clicking. “Moreland had a few changes there, got a new coach,” Barbara said. “It’s always a testing time when that happens because you don’t know what you’re going to come up against. “Are you going to come up against a team that is feeling a bit down on themselves or are you coming up against a team that is pumped and ready to go to impress the new coach? “It was just a good day for us.” Hoppers Crossing has won five games in
a row and is playing with total confidence. Barbara expects the positive outlook of his team to continue when it travels to play a strong Fitzroy City outfit on Saturday. “We’re full of confidence right now and rightly so,” Barbara said. “We’re away from home, but we’re not going to settle for a point. ‘We believe we’re good enough and know and trust in the ability we have in the team. “That’s the mentality we’ve adopted from the start and so far it’s put us in good stead.”
Werribee City’s high hopes at half-time were replaced with sorrow at full-time in a 2-1 loss to Bulleen Lions in NPL Victoria 2 west at David Barro Stadium on Monday night. The Bees had pep in their step at the break after Jake Butler found the back of the net in first-half stoppage time. Things turned sour for the Bees in the second half as Bulleen scored two goals to take all three points. The defeat has dislodged Werribee City from top spot for the first time since May 25. The Bees will turn their attention to a clash with Melbourne Victory on Sunday at Galvin Park. FOR MORE SPORT, VISIT Web: starweekly.com.au Wyndham Star Weekly @starweeklysport @star_weekly
