Wyndham bus boost By Alesha Capone More than 20 new and extended bus services will significantly boost public transport across Wyndham from next month. The changes, to be introduced from July 28, will deliver better bus links to Werribee, Tarneit, Williams Landing and Hoppers Crossing train stations and new estates. Changes include: • Route 167 will have seven extra services across morning and afternoon peak times between Tarneit station and Bethany Street; and an evening service between Tarneit and Hoppers Crossing stations. • Four extra services will run in the afternoon peak period on Route 495, between Williams Landing station and Point Cook south.

• Route 498 will have five extra services between Hoppers Crossing station and the Point Cook Town Centre across morning and evening peak times. • Route 191 from Werribee station will be extended to Manor Lakes and the Jubilee Estate in Wyndham Vale. • Route 441 from Werribee station will be extended into Riverwalk Estate. • Route 497 from Williams Landing station will be extended further into the Saltwater Coast Estate in Point Cook. Minor timetable adjustments will be made to routes 166, 181 and 494 to accommodate the expanded bus services. Werribee MP Tim Pallas, Altona MP Jill Hennessy and Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly made a joint announcement about the expanded bus services on Friday. Ms Connolly said the changes would deliver better bus links to public transport. “By adding extra bus services when passengers need them most, we’re making sure locals in new communities in Werribee and Wyndham can get home sooner and easier,” Mr Pallas said. New timetables and maps outlining the bus service changes will be available in coming weeks at ptv.vic.gov.au

Rohan Rizzoli has joined the ranks of some of Werribee’s finest firefighters. The 26 year-old was recently named Firefighter of the Year at the Werribee CFA annual awards night. Mr Rizzoli joined the brigade in 2015 and said, looking back: “I should’ve joined earlier”. “Since I was in my mid-teens I wanted to be a police officer, I thought volunteering with the CFA would give me a good insight into the emergency services,” he said. “I also had a few friends who were members of the Werribee Fire Brigade, so I had an interest in what they would do and thought why not give it a go and give back to the community.” He said he was honoured to be named Firefighter of the Year and recognised those who blazed the trail before him. “It is a humbling experience to be recognised in front of your peers,” Mr Rizzoli said. “Looking at the honour boards around the station, I can see that I am amongst good company with well known local names such as Daryl Wells and John Ryan who have both served the Werribee Fire Brigade and CFA for over 50 years. “If I can be half the firefighter that these two men are, then I’d be pretty happy with myself. “Since receiving the award, I have been motivated to continue to train and learn as much as I can. “The best part of being a volunteer firefighter is the community events, the brigade attends dozens of events throughout the year. “To be able to show children and families around the fire trucks or through the station puts a big smile on the kids’ faces, it is very rewarding for us.” Esther Lauaki

Family sell-up in ‘unsafe’ suburb By Esther Lauaki Members of a Point Cook extended family are planning to leave the suburb after 16 years because they fear for their safety. Paul O’Brien said he and his wife were awakened by bashing on their locked security door at 2.45am on Sunday, June 2. Mr O’Brien said he was confronted by two men with flashlights when he opened the interior door of the house. “We haven’t slept much at all since it happened,” he told Star Weekly Weekly. “We’ve been up checking the doors and checking them again.”

He said security camera footage from his neighbour captured the incident. “In the footage, they drove into my driveway with headlights on and it looked like they were targeting my four-wheel drive,” Mr O’Brien said. “They had an electronic device that opened my car, but they couldn’t start it because it’s not push button – they needed a key. “When they realised that, they came to my door and started bashing on the door.” He said the incident had shaken them so badly that the couple, along with the families of their two children, also living in Point Cook, had decided to move.

“Residents need to know what’s going on here so that they can upgrade their security and keep an eye out for suspicious behaviour,” Mr O’Brien said. “It’s a message that we need to know about in Point Cook. “We’ve known that this is happening in our area, but this is the first time it’s ever happened to us.” Mr O’Brien said two calls were made to triple 0, but that police did not attend. Wyndham Police dispute Mr O’Brien’s claim, saying he indicated in the first call that he did not want police to visit his home. Police said that officers were at the scene in two minutes

and patrolled the area in two unmarked cars for half an hour. “Over the past two years, police officers in Wyndham have been working incredibly hard to gain the trust and confidence of the community against a backdrop of a growing population,” a Wyndham police statement said. “The police members did not speak with the occupants of the address at the time, however are now conducting follow-up inquiries. “The males are both perceived to be African in appearance and aged in their late teens to early 20s with slim builds.” Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000

Pupils at Tarneit P-9 College were tickled pink with last Friday’s fundraising efforts for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. The school’s Go Pink fundraising day raised more than $1000 for the charity. Students wore a splash of pink as part of the national Go Pink campaign, in the first week of June, which supports thousands of women and their loved ones affected by breast cancer.

A group of 40 Melbourne residents will share in a TattsLotto prize valued at more than $1.3 million. The syndicate entry, nicknamed ‘GOLD59’, was one of three division one-winning entries drawn across the nation on Saturday, June 1. Western suburbs residents are the top online shoppers in Australia. The latest Australia Post eCommerce figures showed Point Cook had the greatest volume of eCommerce across the country, in the year to December, followed by Towoomba and Mackay in Queensland. According to the data, Point Cook online shoppers made the most number of purchases from variety stores, fashion, homewares and appliances and ordered the second highest number of health and beauty products, hobbies and recreational goods. Figures revealed that more than 75 per cent of households in Point Cook shopped online at some point in 2018. Nationwide, the total online spend in 2018 topped $27.5 billion, up 24 per cent on the year before. Australia Post parcels and express services general manager Ben Franzi said the annual report, Inside Australian Online Shopping, provided an overview of Australia’s eCommerce market with key insights into who is shopping online, and what they are buying. “Australians are getting online … and changing the face of shopping,” Mr Franzi said. “They are also expecting faster service and delivery – with next day deliveries growing by 31.7 per cent, with more than 62 per cent of these fashion-related purchases.” He said online goods made up 10 per cent of total retail last year. Hoppers Crossing online shoppers ranked seventh overall for the volume of purchases made last year. The suburb’s shoppers made the fourth highest number of purchases from variety stores, and also favoured fashion and homewares and appliances.

Police probe ‘horrific’ attack By Goya Dmytryshchak Police are appealing for witnesses to a “very horrific” King Street attack that has left a Seabrook father with potentially permanent brain injuries. Awer, a first-time father of a six-month-old boy, was in a coma for two weeks and remains in a rehabilitation centre with life-changing injuries months after the assault. The 27-year-old needs help to walk, communicate and eat. Awer was assaulted by two carloads of males after being followed from a South Melbourne nightclub. CCTV footage from March 24 shows a red Subaru WRX and a red Mitsubishi force Awer’s car to pull over about 4.30am before blocking it from the front and back. Awer leaves the passenger seat before being assaulted by six to eight offenders, who are of African appearance, with a “metal or wooden object”. Detective Sergeant Simon Watts last week told Star Weekly that police were calling for witnesses and dam-cash footage. “At this stage, all we know is the victim was forced off the road by a red Subaru sedan and a red Mitsubishi sedan … he was then attacked by a group of between six to eight males. “He was then assaulted with an unknown object [and]suffered serious permanent injuries to his head. “The victim has gone out one night and still hasn’t, several months later, been able to return to see the progress and the growing-up of his

son. Any information that could help us would be really appreciated.” Police are unsure of the motive behind the attack but believe Awer and his attackers have some connection. “We don’t believe that this was a random attack,” Sergeant Watts said. There were three others in the car with Awer at the time he was assaulted. On Thursday, police arrested a 21-year-old man at Truganina. He has been charged with attempted murder and was remanded in custody. Police also arrested a 23-year-old man on May 1 in relation to the assault. He was extradited from Sydney to Melbourne, charged with attempted murder and remanded to appear at the County Court on July 30. On the road to glory Young Cameron Gatt has come away with his third BMX title in as many years. The Truganina speedster, who rides for Geelong Thunder, lead the club’s contingent at the recent Australian BMX Championships in Shepparton, winning the 11-year-old boys’ title. The victory booked him a spot in the world championships next month in Belgium. Cameron said he’s competitive at heart. “You need to do your best and you know if you mess up you’ve let yourself down but you just keep trying,” he said. “The first half of the race you don’t want to show your competitors what you’ve got and then the second half you just blitz it.”

Cameron said his ultimate ambition was to win Olympic gold in BMX for Australia. Mother Michelle said Cameron outlasted the reigning world number one, two and three in Shepparton. “He was up against really tough competitors and he smashed them all,” Ms Gatt said. More than 1500 entrants from nearly 100 clubs across the country competed at nationals. “The start of the race I never watch – I just close my eyes,” Ms Gatt said. “Something clicks when he rides and his maturity really comes out.“ Esther Lauaki

Close call for stowaway kitten By Alesha Capone Wyndham’s CFA crews put in an awesome effort when they rescued a stowaway kitten from a car’s engine bay last week. Members of the Truganina and Hoppers Crossing fire brigades were called out to Tarneit on June 4, where they helped to extract a little black-and-white cat trapped inside a vehicle. Truganina brigade secretary Rosie Utteridge said the car’s owner, who had driven from Altona Meadows to Tarneit, had pulled over after hearing the kitten meowing from somewhere inside his automobile. When the driver was unable to find the

feline, the CFA was called in. Locating the kitten from within the car’s innards proved to be a tough job for the CFA. Ms Utteridge said that she and the other firefighters put the car onto a ramp in an effort to spot the feline. They also used thermal imaging equipment in the hope that the kitten would show up as a “hotspot” within the vehicle. But because the car’s engine was hot, this proved difficult. Eventually, after unscrewing part of the car’s panelling, they found the kitten. “I took my jacket off and scooped it up,” Ms Utteridge said.

Ms Utteridge took the rescued kitten, which had no tags or collar, to the Wyndham council pound. She said staff at the facility said the kitten would be put up for adoption if its owner was not found within eight days. Ms Utteridge said that if no owner came forward she would be keen to adopt the kitten and name it Firey.

Blooming nice volunteers The work is never done for the team of 120 gardeners who care for the Victoria State Rose Garden. Hoppers Crossing’s Anne Long has volunteered at the Victorian State Rose Garden for nine years. “We have gardeners that have been volunteering for more than 25 years,” Ms Long said. “We make sure the roses are fed, watered and mulched. “All my life I grew up on a farm and farming and gardening go hand in hand.” She said “many hands make light work” and volunteers were always needed. Werribee’s world class vet clinic By Esther Lauaki U-Vet’s newly expanded campus is being put through its paces with students enjoying world class labs, surgeries and study areas. The University of Melbourne officially opened its $63 million Learning and Teaching building and U-Vet Werribee Animal Hospital extension last week. Vice-chancellor Duncan Maskell said the new five-storey, 6-Green Star-rated building and the adjacent U-Vet Werribee Animal Hospital for doctoral veterinary medicine students was one of Australia’s leading veterinary hospitals, with capacity to treat more than 25,000 animals a year. “We are very excited about the new Learning and Teaching building and the U-Vet extension,” Professor Maskell said. “It will become a hub for our students and for the broader community. “The expanded Werribee campus will provide even more learning experiences and opportunities.” The Werribee campus hosts about 500 students a week. Veterinary and agricultural sciences dean John Fazakerley said the Learning and Teaching building included state-of-the-art laboratories, classrooms and surgeries. “It also provides break-out spaces, study niches and a library and creates a home in Melbourne’s west for our veterinary students,” Professor Fazakerley said. The upgrade included an intensive care unit and emergency ward, a new reception area with segregated waiting areas, additional consulting suites, a new cat ward, an exotic pet ward, student learning spaces, administrative offices and additional parking.

Project hits fever pace Two Wyndham friends who saw a need to unite their community are gathering a strong following. Truganina’s Pascaline Pesa, 19, and Jumess Tshishimbi, 18, started the movement Afro Fever last year to showcase their African heritage and fight negative stereotypes. Starting as a school project while in year 12 at Tarneit Senior College, their grassroots initiative involved door-knocking invitations and running a cross-cultural barbecue. “We want to encourage them to be themselves and embrace where they came from,” Pascaline said. “We saw so many things happening in the community and the media that kept saying, ‘African youth are being thugs and criminals’,

and I thought to myself, ‘this is not me. I don’t fit in that category’.” The friends formed a dance group of 15 young people and perform at festivals and events around Melbourne. Their goal for Afro Fever is to travel to schools and community groups speaking on issues that affect African young people and sharing their love of dance and poetry. Pascaline and Jumess are both pursuing their passions for criminology at university. “If you can’t change the media, go to the people … being African is not a badge of shame,” Pascaline said. Agent guilty of importing drugs By Goya Dmytryshchak A former real estate director has pleaded guilty to possessing ice and importing a marketable quantity of a drug known as GBL to his Altona home. David Costa, 36, had been in charge of Elders Real Estate’s Werribee and Tarneit offices for about 15 years, the County Court heard. Costa ordered about $145 of gamma-butyrolactone – similar to GHB – online from overseas to be delivered to his Altona address.

The package containing a white plastic bottle of clear liquid weighing 1108 grams was intercepted by authorities, who substituted the GBL for a harmless substance. In August last year, an Australian Federal Police officer posing as a courier delivered the package to Cotsta’s unit and he was arrested a short time later. A search of his home uncovered several bags of methamphetamine with a pure weight of 2.7 grams, which Costa said was for personal use. In her sentencing remarks, Judge Wendy Wilmoth said that as the real estate business

boomed over the past decade, Costa worked very long hours under very high pressure. “You had begun to use illicit drugs in a recreational sense during your mid-20s, but this had not been a problem until you experienced burnout from the pressure of work,” she said. “This resulted in what you have described

as a breakdown, which came to a head in 2016 when your relationship with your partner ended. “You and your sister sold the business, reducing that cause of your stress but making available a large sum of money which then financed your increased drug use. “You used GBL regularly combined with cocaine and amphetamines.” Costa was given a two-year community correction order to perform 70 hours of unpaid work or to be used as time in treatment for drug abuse and mental health issues.

A really Ritzy return Tamara Eden has sung and danced her way around the world – for her latest gig, she’s coming home to Melbourne. Eden, who grew up in Newport and Hoppers Crossing, has been cast in Puttin’ On the Ritz for its Australian tour. The show features classic songs by George Gershwin, Irving Berlin and Cole Porter, along with ballroom, tap, theatre and ballet dancing. “I’m mostly looking forward to paying homage to these wonderful composers – these songs have been around such a long time but have stood the test of time,” Eden said. She said she had always loved the classic sounds of Hollywood’s golden era. “I attended Mossfiel Primary School … I have very vivid memories of taking the school talent quest very seriously,” she said. “And then I went to high school at Werribee Secondary College.”

She studied at the Keilor Jazz Centre and, at the age of 15, played Dorothy in The Werribee Theatre Company’s production of The Wiz. Eden said she had spent the past few years performing in shows across Japan, England and Norway, but was looking forward to performing for Australian audiences. Rescuing the rescuers A downpour last week has led to a flood of support for a n animal rescue shelter. The Bacchus Marsh region experienced a high amount of rainfall on June 3, with the Coopers Animal Refuge in Bullengarook recording 88 millimeters for the day. It meant an unhappy time for the refuge’s many animals and owner Christine Gilmore as the whole refuge flooded. “It was great to get the rain, but it was just too much, too quick,” Ms Gilmore said. “We did lose one joey, but all the animals were like drowned rats. We’ve got joeys, wombats, sheep and chickens, so they were all in need of some help. “The biggest concern was that we would lose more animals.”

Ms Gilmore put a post on Facebook calling for help from the community, and was soon inundated with offers from across the region, with many now offering their help on a regular basis. “All these people we didn’t know just showed up with drills and shovels and hoes, and they were trenching and patching and helping the animals get safe and dry,” Ms Gilmore said. “We actually had to turn people away on the day because the response was so big, but since then we’ve had donations of beds and feed, and people wanting to help out in other ways. “I was just gobsmacked by the response from the community.”

Pallas drives into controversy A week after telling Victorians who have saved for a luxury car to “get a life”, it has been revealed that Treasurer Tim Pallas got special permission to have a Lexus as his chauffeur-driven ministerial car. Mr Pallas’ new car is a Lexus IS350, which has a base price of about $74,000. “Why did he receive an exemption from the normal government purchasing policy to get himself a nice little luxury Lexus to tool around in?” Opposition Leader Michael O’Brien asked, during question time in Parliament. in Canberra. “So the fact that we are in the process of looking at what vehicles appropriately fit the safety and efficiency guidelines that we set as a government is really a demonstration of their failure to do their job in government.” In last month’s state budget, Mr Pallas increased the duty on luxury cars valued upward of $100,000 from July 1, which is expected to raise $260 million. At a post-budget lunch, he had little sympathy when asked why it was fair to tax someone who, for example, had saved for decades to buy a

hi-spec LandCruiser. “They’ve been saving up for 20 years for this? Get a life,” he told the luncheon. At the budget lock-up the day before, Mr Pallas admitted to journalists he had not caught a peak-hour train to work for three years. Last week it was also revealed he offloaded his Westpac BlueChip20 fund, which included shares in Transurban, the toll road giant in line to haul in billions from its deal to build the West Gate Tunnel. – The Age

Fruits of their effort Inside Fruit2Work’s factory, a group of workers in high-vis vests chat and laugh with each other while they pack fruit into cardboard boxes and load vans. The Laverton North site looks like any other workplace, but Fruit2Work is a social enterprise run by youth charity Whitelion, which gives people who have served time in jail a chance to gain work experience and skills through employment. Fruit2Work’s operations manager Simon Fenech said the organisation was the only one of its type in the world – that is, a social enterprise run entirely by people who have spent time in jail. “It’s not just a job, it’s a purpose,” Mr Fenech said. “Any employer, once they know you’ve got a criminal record, the door is closed – whereas Fruit2Work is about making opportunities and a second chance.”

Mr Fenech said Fruit2Work started two-and-a-half years ago as “two guys in the back of a station wagon selling 40 boxes of fruit a week”. “We now employ 14 people, have six vehicles and our own factory and sell approximately 800 to 1000 boxes of fruit per week, and 5000 litres of milk,” he said. “In 2.5 years, we have had a 100 per cent success rate, nobody has gone back to jail and as for the feedback we’re getting, people are saying it’s absolutely life-changing.” Details: www.fruit2work.com.au Alesha Capone

Poachers bag $15,000 fine Two men have been fined $15,000 and had their car forfeited after pleading guilty to possessing nearly 300 abalone at Altona in January. The pair, who were caught after a tip-off from the public, pleaded guilty in court to taking a commercial quantity of abalone, taking abalone during the closed season and taking undersize abalone. Victorian Fisheries Authority acting director Brooke Hall said the men were caught with 298 abalone, 291 of which were undersize. “The pair’s illegal haul is nearly 30 times the daily recreational bag limit of five abalone per person,” she said. The pair’s $5000 Ford XR6 and diving equipment were seized on the spot. The two were each fined $7500 and convicted, and the magistrate ordered them to forfeit their diving equipment. I grew up in Wyndham from the age of about five or six and played local footy there as a kid. What causes are you passionate about? I’m playing in a City vs Country charity football match on July 7 raising money for charity. I know someone with cancer so that’s a cause quite close to my heart. Motor Neuron Disease is also a big issue in the footy community so naturally I want to support that cause. Tell us about your involvement in the Wyndham community. CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds a new lunch-time favourite Could it be? That the parched desert that is eating in Keilor Park – and surrounding the Star Weekly office, in particular – is giving way to new blooms? Yes – it is so. In coming weeks, CTS will chronicle a sooper dooper Greek bakery/cake shop that has opened up in Keilor Park – and within walking distance from my office. In the meantime, The D’s Souvlaki has taken up residence in our resident brewery. We’ve been meaning to try The D’s souvlakis for a while, as they’re apparently highly regarded. But its long-time location on Matthews Avenue, over in Airport West, proved tricky for us Yarraville boys – no lunch service and a night-time drive too long when similar options abound closer to home. But the D’s crew is now on the same block as Star Weekly Weekly, lunch and dinner is being served on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays – and the the joint has hit the ground running. Indeed, it seems this classy souvlaki operation is an even better fit for the area and its brewery than the previous tenants, the Houston’s barbecue team. The D’s Souvlaki is tapping into the plethora of Keilor Park and environs workers. As well, the D’s move to a new location has pulled regular night-time customers right along. The menu is a simple, compact list absent of such accessories as chips. That’s fine by us.

It’s hosing down with rain, I arrive at an unusually (for me) late, post-noon hour and the crowds are building. But all becomes good and fine when contemplating and eating my medium lamb souvlaki ($12). This is excellent stuff – good, ungristly meat and all the usual souvlaki bits in good order. I return the following Friday and enjoy a much earlier and sunnier outlook. This time I go the medium chicken – also priced at $12. Now, chicken souvlaki – or doner or shish – is not normally my style, but journalistic duty requires variance from the previous week. But I’m happy as this, too, is a winner. If, in both cases, I have wished for more flame-induced salty crustiness, I understand that souvlaki is a dice roll of luck and timing. Continued visits to The D’s Souvlaki for this lad’s Friday lunch are a safe bet.

Jets show full power in away win By Lance Jenkinson Western Jets have added Gippsland Power to their growing list of roadkill in the NAB League this season. The Jets have won four of their five away games, including victories in Carlton, Werribee, Gippsland and even interstate in Tasmania. Jets football operations manager Matthew Dervan rated Saturday’s 18-point win over Gippsland Power at Morwell Recreation Reserve as one of the best road wins because it has been such an unhappy hunting ground for his club historically. “It’s a hard place to win at Morwell,” Dervan said. “We haven’t won in a long time there. “To get the four points was a pretty big confidence booster for the group to know we can perform to a high standard away from Melbourne.” Western Jets had the game on their own terms in the first half. The only letdown for the Jets was their inability to make their dominance count on the scoreboard. The Jets led by 29 points at half-time, but it could have been more and they did not totally slam the door shut on the home side. “We really played well in that first half,” Dervan said. “We played our brand of footy, but unfortunately we didn’t quite hit the scoreboard as much as we would’ve liked.” Gippsland only needed a 10-minute patch in the third quarter to get back into the game. The Power kicked four of the five goals in the third term to get to within 10 points at three-quarter time. “Our defensive structure broke down and we let them back in,” Dervan said. “They were able to get four goals in 10 minutes and really get the momentum. “[Jets coach] Ryan [O’Keefe] really challenged the boys to re-group and get back to the way we want to play.” Gippsland kicked the first goal of the last

quarter to get within a kick, but the Jets steadied and found two late goals to seal the victory. Dervan was impressed with the Jets ability to respond when put under immense pressure by Gippsland. Lucas Rocci was a huge reason why the Jets held on late. The captain was calm under pressure across half-back, finishing with 25 disposals, six marks and five tackles. Aside from the coaches, Rocci was one of the key motivators for the Jets at three-quarter time. “He’s getting a lot of the ball and is becoming a really reliable half-back flanker for us,” Dervan said. “He really challenged the group at three-quarter time to get back to Jets footy and the way we want to play.” There was no more influential player on the ground than Jets onballer Jonah Horo. Horo’s team-lifting acts are becoming an every game occurrence for the Jets. The dominant two-way player finished with 20 disposals, four marks and nine tackles. “He’s just an absolute bull for us inside,” Dervan said. “He’s a tackling machine, he works hard and does the little things that inspire our team to work for one another. “He’s really starting to show the class of player he can be and it’s inspiring some of our midfielders to support him and play like him.” Emerson Jeka had a successful return from a knee injury with two goals for the Jets. Will Kennedy was a powerhouse in the ruck with 50 hit outs. Western Jets are fifth on the ladder, just a game and percentage off top spot. The Jets will be hoping to continue their strong away form when they travel to play Greater Western Victoria Rebels at Mars Stadium on June 22. Werribee City stumbles with a sober loss to the Lions Werribee City has been the dux of the class in the National Premier League 2 west this season, but it undoubtedly flunked its latest test. The top-of-the-ladder Bees were abysmal in a 2-1 loss to Eastern Lions at Galvin Park on Saturday. Bees coach Sergio Sabbadini was not mincing his words in assessing his team’s performance. “We were terrible,” he said. “Very few players had a pass mark. “There were cameo performances here and there, but nothing solid. “No one played well [for the full 90 minutes], it was pretty bad all round.” It is an indication of how far Werribee City has come this season when it treats a one-goal loss as an epic failure. The Bees have done so much well in the first 15 games of the season that the football gods gave them a reprieve on Saturday and kept them on top of the ladder despite their defeat. Sabbadini believes his side will not be as lucky next time. He is concerned by the form swings in the past month. “We stay on top and we’re happy, but we’ve still got to win,” he said. “We thought today was a winnable game and we set up to win it.” Sabbadini could tell before a ball was kicked that Werribee City was not in the right frame of mind. The Bees seemed unsettled even in their warm up. “Our warm up today was pathetic,” Sabbadini said. “You could tell the boys were a bit flat and we called them in to rev them up, but it just didn’t work. 40 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 12, 2019

“It was one of those days.” Sabbadini was just as scathing on the officiating. After taking a two-goal deficit into half-time, Werribee City was given a lifeline through a goal to Lisandro Paz. Paz was played in by substitute Shaun Hodor, who made an instant impact when he was brought on. But that is where the joy ended for

Werribee City. The Bees would finish the game with nine men after red cards were handed to Tyler James and Julyan Collett. Sabbadini described the James sending off as a “soft decision” that will be appealed, while Collett was sent off with a second yellow. Injuries have seen Werribee City without

four regulars in recent weeks. The return of some of those players for the massive game against Geelong at Stead Park on Saturday was supposed to alleviate the selection headaches, but the looming suspensions will cause another headache for the Bees. Lance Jenkinson

Falcons flying high in Victorian Netball League City West Falcons have left a trail of destruction across the Victorian Netball League championship division over the first 11 weeks. The Falcons are a perfect 11-0 and their hot run of form is showing no signs of abating. Falcons coach Marg Lind has been impressed with the team-first ethos among her players that started to build on their run to the premiership last season. “This team gets along really well,” Lind said. “They’re quite connected as a group and there’s a lot of trust there. “They still have that connection we started to build last year and that’s strengthened a bit this season.” City West has long been a powerhouse of Victorian netball. The Falcons have built a reputation as a team

that is meticulous in their planning and have the ability to execute to the nth degree on game day. In the latest win, a 66-31 drubbing of Casey Demons at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Wednesday night, the players took it upon themselves to move mid-courter Molly Jovic into the attacking circle without notifying the coaches once the score blew out beyond 30. Past Falcons squads probably would not have thought about making a move without running it by Lind or one of the assistant coaches, but this team lives a little on the edge. “They enjoy a bit of fun, a bit of camaraderie and that’s what that was all about,” Lind said. “They’re quite entertaining as a group actually. They have a few moments when they go a bit silly and take some massive risks, but

that’s usually when they’re 20 goals up.” You can bet the City West players will not be pulling any stunts like that next time they are on court. The top-of-the-ladder Falcons will feature in a match of the round blockbuster against Geelong Cougars at Eagle Stadium in Werribee this Wednesday night. Centrals find new stars

By Lance Jenkinson Werribee Centrals went on an exploration mission but still came away with a 56-29 win over Geelong West in GDFL Netball at Galvin Park on Saturday. The top-of-the-ladder Centrals were already forced to shake up their line-up with the unavailablilty of star goal shooter Ellie Tubbs before coach Lina Iuta decided to experiment with a number of other changes. All the moves made, forced or tactical, worked to perfection as Centrals improved their season record to 8-0 to remain a game and percentage clear on top of the ladder. Iuta was impressed with her players ability to adapt to new roles. “We had a few girls play out of position just to see how we would adapt to the changes and they did well,” she said. “Ellie Tubbs was unavailable, so it gave us an opportunity to play other players in the shooting ring.” The big question was where the goals would come from for Werribee Centrals. The answer was Jacinta Savory. Savory usually plays at goal attack and does a lot more running, but her isolation play in the attacking circle impressed. She shot 43 from 56, a return of 77 per cent, but was also involved in the connection from the mid-court to the attack. “She killed it out there,” Iuta said. “Just her composure in the circle with her movement, her angles, the direction she was giving our feeders, it made both their jobs easier. “Ball in hand, 77 per cent shooting, I can’t complain, it’s better than 50 per cent she was shooting a couple of weeks ago, so it was a massive improvement. “Her goal was to link up well with the feeders and get her accuracy up, which I think she nailed both.” The key drivers for Werribee Centrals were Melissa Prismall and Megan Noonan. Prismall and Noonan seemed to be on the same wavelength with the Centrals attackers right the way through. “Placement and communication was key,” Iuta said. “They were all talking to each other and working out when to change the angles up.” Defensively, Werribee Centrals was rock solid. Geelong West put some pressure on in the first half, but goal keeper and goal defence tandem Bridgitte Ardossi and Lauren Winter – they spent a half in each of the defensive bibs – put the clamps on. Ardossi was the player on the court for her dynamic play. “Putting her back into goal keeper, she’s quite dominant and wanted to be more dynamic in her game,” Iuta said. “She had so many interceptions, rebounds and shut the shooter down – that’s why she got the three votes. “Then we put her into goal defence in the second half to see how the changes would go

Werribee Centrals lost an ‘eight-point game’ to a Geelong West side that is also chasing a finals spot in the Geelong and District Football League Smiths Holden Cup. The Centurions made a promising start at Galvin Park on Saturday evening, leading by 21 points at quarter-time, but it turned pear-shaped thereafter. The Nick Smith-coached Centurions were out-gunned 14 goals to six in the final three quarters. Werribee Centrals are seventh on the ladder with a 4-4 record ahead of a road trip to struggling Anakie on Saturday.

Point Cook continued its sparkling form in the Football Victoria women’s state league 4 with a solid 4-0 win over Castlemaine Goldfields at Saltwater Reserve on Sunday.
