New life for war hangar By Alesha Capone A heritage World War II building at the former Werribee Satellite Aerodrome will be relocated and another will be demolished, if a planning permit application from Melbourne Water is approved. The water authority has applied to Heritage Victoria for permission to demolish a workshop at the site. Melbourne Water is also seeking to conduct conservation works at one hangar and relocate it, and undertake “minor works” at another hangar. The Werribee Satellite Aerodrome, which was built in 1942-43 and served in WWII as a

satellite to the Point Cook and Laverton RAAF airfields, was originally home to five timber trussed hangars, a workshop building and an area of accommodation and administration buildings. Nowadays, only the hangars and workshop remain. Melbourne Water’s property manager Karyn Hunter said both hangars and the associated land were part of the Riverwalk Estate in Werribee, which is being developed in partnership with Development Victoria. Ms Hunter said the planning application included a proposal to conserve and relocate one of the hangars. She said the ultimate plan was to locate both of the hangars together, to expand and create

a museum complex for the restoration of the B-24 Liberator aircraft. “Melbourne Water has been working with a number of government agencies, heritage architects and the B-24 Liberator Memorial Australia Group to identify the best preservation options for the hangars,” Ms Hunter said. “The hangar on New Farm Road is in poor structural condition and … requires significant works to ensure preservation.” Ms Hunter said a number of submissions supporting the planning permit had been received during a public feedback period. B-24 Liberator Memorial Australia Group secretary Judith Gilbert said the association

was “very excited about Melbourne Water’s plan”. “This will result in the relocation of the large hangar [H1] from its current position to close to the restoration hangar [H2],” she said. “Last year the B-24 Liberator restoration museum was formally accredited by Museums Australia, so Hangar 1 will be incorporated into an expanded museum precinct. “The restored B-24 Liberator bomber will be showcased in this hangar, which was designed in the 1940s to accommodate large aircraft. “Instead of remaining in a state of disrepair Hangar 1 will enhance the appeal of the B-24 Liberator Memorial Australia as a tourist destination in Werribee.”

Officers also issued infringement notices to 14 people for drunken and anti-social behaviour and arrested another person for possession of a drug of dependence. Sergeant Frazer also said that earlier this year, police received some calls from residents about “rough sleepers causing issues in Chirnside Park”.

Shops fined for selling tobacco to children

Ten Wyndham businesses have been fined $645 each for selling tobacco to children in the past year. During a council operation earlier this month, test buyers visited 22 sites and four of those tobacco outlets sold cigarettes to minors. Safer communities portfolio holder Kim McAliney said while most tobacconists requested identification at the point of sale, there were still some breaking the law by failing to ask the question of young customers. “Once interviewed – and ultimately fined – the store assistants who sold tobacco to children all said the same thing, that they looked over 18,” Cr McAliney said. “That’s why I would like to stress to sellers of tobacco products, that if anyone looks under the age of 25, identification should be requested.” Cr McAliney said banning the sale of cigarettes to children was a way to eradicate the “harmful habit in our community”. “We need to protect the health of our children, so if you see kids purchasing tobacco please do not be a passive bystander and let us know about it,” she said. “To clamp down on the illegal sale of tobacco products, we are conducting several covert operations where young tobacco test purchase assistants are sent into stores to buy tobacco. “We know that increased legislation governing tobacco products and smoking continues to contribute to the decline of smoking rates in Victoria.” Details: bit.ly/2HNtqyD A branch off a council tree fell on Phil Christopher’s house damaging his roof. A Hoppers Crossing man was left without electricity for four days and is $8000 out of pocket after a branch from a council-owned tree broke off, snapping a powerline and damaging his house. A large branch off the black gum outside Philip Christopher’s Moffatt Crescent house came down in February. But Wyndham council last week refused to reimburse Mr Christopher for the thousands he paid electricians to fix the powerline because, according to records, the tree was deemed safe 31 months ago. “I was in the shower on a Saturday morning, it was sunny and there was no wind, and I heard an almighty crash,” Mr Christopher said. “When I went out to check, this huge branch had broken off and landed where my letterbox is … if there was a person standing there it would have killed them.” Mr Christopher said, to avoid hefty weekend callout fees, he waited until the following Monday for a contractor to come out. Mr Christopher said a letter from Wyndham council informed him that council trees were inspected every 36 months. Operations director Stephen Thorpe said the council planted trees “in good faith” and had strict inspection and maintenance regimes to ensure they remain in good condition. “Our arborists and contractors have programs to ensure the safety of our trees, however, we cannot control nature,” Mr Thorpe said. “While we empathise with such property owners, unfortunately council is not responsible for acts of nature.” Mr Thorpe said when the tree was inspected in July-August 2016 “no defects were identified with the health of the tree”. “Trees … are important to improve urban amenity, provide shade and make Wyndham a more attractive place to live,” he said. “As we consider the tree to have been inspected and appropriately maintained, there was no negligence on council’s behalf.”

“As a result we have patrolled these areas and provided referrals and support to any people that needed it or dealt with any criminal offences identified,” he said. “There have not been any further issues in regards to anti-social behaviour in Chirnside Park since the end of March.” Anyone with concerns about anti-social behaviour in their area can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or 000 in an emergency.

Police are renewing efforts to crack down on anti-social behaviour and public drinking around Werribee train station and Werribee River. Sergeant Julian Frazer of the Wyndham Community Safety Team said the unit regularly visited the two areas to tackle anti-social behaviour and crime. “In recent weeks we have noticed an increase in anti-social behaviour in that area, which coincided with some concerns raised by residents and the [Wyndham] council,” he said. “This type of offending is prominent at some

Vets call for swan safety By Alesha Capone Werribee Open Range Zoo veterinarians say they have noticed an increase in the number of swans injured by fishing lines and hooks in suburban waterways and lakes in the west. The vets have appealed to anglers to dispose of their unwanted lines and hooks in a responsible manner and always monitor their fishing lines. Zoo veterinarian Dr Paul Eden said in the past two to three weeks, he had treated swans with hooks in their necks and stomachs, or caught in their legs. “The majority have had hooks caught in their skin, particularly round the legs and stomachs, with fishing line around their legs too, which can cut off the blood supply or cause a wound,” he said. “Sadly, there was one swan last week who swallowed a fish hook and unfortunately had to be euthanised.” Dr Eden said wildlife carers had reported that swans were usually getting injured by, or swallowing, fishing lines and hooks dumped in or near water. He said there were also reports of some people leaving their fishing lines unattended, particularly in the Sanctuary Lakes area. Dr Eden said it was important that anglers disposed of their fishing lines and hooks in bins, such as the Zoos Victoria ‘Seal the Loop’ bins which are provided at waterways and beaches across the state. He also said it was important to never leave a fishing line or rod unattended. Dr Eden said two of the recently-injured swans were being looked after by wildlife carers. “We’re hopeful they [the swans] will be able to be set free again,” he said.

Sports cash boost in Wyndham Several Wyndham sports clubs will benefit from a share in more than $530,000 in grants from the state government. Werribee MP Tim Pallas last week announced that the Wyndham City Sharks, Corpus Christi Basketball Club, Werribee Bushwalking & Outdoor Club and the Werribee Centrals Sports and Youth Club were among the 386 sports clubs in Victoria to be funded under the 2018-19 Sporting Club Grants Program. The grants provide clubs up to $1000 for new uniforms and equipment; up to $2000 to train coaches, officials and volunteers; and up to $5000 to improve operational effectiveness. The Wyndham City Sharks and Corpus Christi Basketball Club will use their grants for uniforms and equipment. The Werribee Bushwalking & Outdoor Club will use its grant for first-aid training, while the Werribee Centrals Sports and Youth Club will put its grant towards developing its website and business model. Mr Pallas said the Sporting Club Grants Program was part of the state government’s commitment to make sport more accessible and inclusive, increase participation and stimulate local economies. “The Sporting Club Grants Program is giving grassroots sports clubs in Wyndham the support they need to grow their ranks,” he said.

Hacketts Road revamp to start Wyndham council has appointed a contractor to undertake a $4 million project to widen and seal part of Hacketts Road in Point Cook. Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw said Bitu-mil had been selected to carry out Hacketts Road work from Aviation Road to Tamworth Grove. Cr Shaw said up to 450 vehicles used the section of Hacketts Road each day. “This number is expected to rise in the coming months, with more development taking place in the south of Point Cook, and the state government’s works on the Duncans Road interchange ramping up,” she said.

Vintage funds outcome ShadowFax winery has received a $25,000 boost to support exports and sustainability. The Wine Growth Fund grant is part of a program to help winery growth, increase visitors, boost exports and local jobs. Werribee MP Tim Pallas said he was “thrilled” to announce the boost for ShadowFax, as part of the program’s third round of funding. “The program provides Wyndham’s best winemakers with the support to grow their businesses and boost visitors to our beautiful wine regions,” Mr Pallas said. “Victorian winemakers produce some fantastic wines and we’re proud to back this industry.” ShadowFax general manager Phil Strachan said the money would go towards the winery’s exports plan and its composter and closed loop system project to develop sustainable farming practices. The Wine Growth Fund helps wineries with projects such as cellar door, kitchen and cafe upgrades; wine production facilities; e-commerce programs; accommodation initiatives and vineyard improvements. The first two rounds of the Wine Growth Fund supported 106 projects in the state’s wine industry, which is worth $7.6 billion to the Victorian economy and employs about 13,000 people, mostly in regional areas.

Wyndham car thefts on the rise By Alesha Capone The number of vehicle thefts recorded in Wyndham has risen significantly in two years. According to the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council (NMVTRC), last year 748 vehicles were stolen in the municipality, compared to 518 in the previous 12 months. In 2018, there were 183 vehicles stolen in Hoppers Crossing (compared to 89 in 2017), 158 vehicles stolen in Werribee (101 previously) and 102 vehicles stolen in Tarneit (67 previously).

There were also 86 vehicles stolen in Point Cook (64 previously), 63 vehicles stolen in Wyndham Vale (52 previously), 62 vehicles stolen in Truganina (38 previously) and 36 vehicles stolen in Williams Landing (25 previously). Little River recorded the lowest amount of vehicles stolen in Wyndham last year, at eight vehicles (compared to 12 previously). Werribee South recorded 16 vehicle thefts (seven previously) and Laverton North 34 vehicle thefts (63 previously). The NMVTRC estimates that more than 70

per cent of late model vehicle thefts occur when offenders gain access to a vehicle’s key, and that 45 per cent of cars are stolen from residential properties. The NMVTRC, Crime Stoppers Victoria, Victoria Police and the state government last week joined forces to launch the Consideration is Key campaign in Wyndham. Crime Stoppers Victoria chief executive Stella Smith said the campaign asked residents to consider how accessible their car keys, when kept inside residential properties, were to potential thieves.

Wyndham police Inspector Marty Allison said obtaining car keys was often “a motivator for residential burglaries”. “These sorts of thefts are almost always opportunistic with offenders entering homes either through open or unlocked doors and windows to steal items, including car keys,” he said. “In many cases, they are doing this while the home owner is not present. “So, we are asking Wyndham residents to secure their car keys in a safe place that is not easily visible.”

Wyndham’s oldest softball club is evolving and hopes to attract fresh talent. This season marks 40 years since the club was formed, originally as Epsom Street Softball Club, then renamed Altona Softball Club a few years later. Treasurer Jodie Cowland said the club would take on a new moniker this year, the Hawks Fastpitch Softball Club, as a reflection of its current members. “We are rebranding now in order to be more inclusive of the area we now represent – Wyndham,” Ms Cowland said. “We play at President’s Park in the Werribee Softball Association … At the peak times of the club we had four or five junior teams, three women’s and two men’s teams.” She said membership was waning across the sport and the club wanted to be proactive in bringing in new players. “There is a team for everyone at all levels

Council, EPA in dump sting

By Alesha Capone The Koala Clancy Foundation has urged Wyndham residents to join its tree-planting events designed to help koalas survive in the wild. Koala expert and foundation president Janine Duffy said that two Community Koala Tree Planting days would be held later this year, in the You Yangs near Little River. “Koalas in the You Yangs and Brisbane Ranges need our help,” Ms Duffy said. “It’s getting hotter and drier in the west, and every summer it gets harder for koalas to survive. “Koala Clancy Foundation has a plan to save Werribee’s closest wild koalas – working closely with farmers and Landcare, we are planting special koala trees in the places that koalas need them most. “What we need is many hands to plant, and local hands are the best.” Ms Duffy said the events allowed participants to plant trees in pre-dug holes for around 1.5 to two hours, and that the rest of the day involved a nature walk and education with a koala expert. The planting days will be held on July 14 and August 18. The meeting place for the planting days is the Little River Hotel, 10/14 Flinders Street, from where the planting group will travel to the location in the You Yangs. Cost: Children $20, adults $30. A surveillance sting has cost a Werribee lawn mowing contractor a $1934 fine for dumping a truckload of garden waste in a suburban street. Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) and Wyndham council officers teamed up to investigate an incident in November when a tip truck was captured on a council camera dumping a load of mostly green waste at Tariff Court. Wyndham city operations director Stephen Thorpe said the industrial estate was a hotspot for illegal dumping. “We escalated the case to EPA because repeated waste dumping at the site has been creating a nuisance to the community and a hazard to the local environment,” Mr Thorpe said. He said dumped green waste can flood nearby stormwater drains and creeks with nutrients, leading to toxic algae blooms that can kill the waterway’s natural wildlife. EPA regional metropolitan manager Daniel Hunt said Wyndham was one of 13 Victorian councils that had an in-house EPA-appointed local environment protection officer. “That gives the councils faster, easier access to the EPA’s investigation capabilities and capacity to impose larger fines,” Mr Hunt said. Focus on Wyndham kids Former prime minister Julia Gillard has launched a research project aimed at discovering more about the link between early childhood trauma and adult mental health issues. The project will focus on children in Wyndham and the Sydney suburb of Marrickville. The $2.5 million, five-year project, which will target youngsters up to eight years old, will be led by the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI).

Ms Gillard launched the project at the Murdoch Children’s Research Centre (MCRI) at the Royal Children’s Hospital last week. The research is being co-funded by Beyond Blue, of which Ms Gillard is chairperson, and the National Health and Medical Research Council. The project’s lead researcher, MCRI’s Harriet Hiscock, said a team from 11 Australian institutes and universities would start the research by finding out what practical support parents needed – such as accessible counselling, housing support or health care. Professor Hiscock said the long-term goal of the research was the prevention of, and early intervention in, incidents of childhood trauma or adversity in order to reduce national rates of depression, anxiety and suicide. “Children who experience stresses or adversities as they grow up are six to 10 times more likely to develop mental health problems later in life,” she said. “These adversities include

a broad range from physical and emotional abuse or neglect, parent mental health problems, harsh parenting, parent substance abuse, through to housing problems and social isolation. By lessening the stresses on young children, we improve their wellbeing now and in the future.”

Ms Gillard said that half of all adult mental health issues and problems emerged before the age of 14. “This program will demonstrate how important it is to invest in the early years, because adverse childhood experiences can have life-long implications,” she said.

The Italian Sports Club Werribee raised nearly $12,000 at its annual charity fundraiser for the Cancer Council Foundation where 280 people showed out in support. Biggest Morning Tea events are hosted around the country during May and June. Italian Sports Club Werribee’s popular events have raised more than $108,000 in the past 13 years for the cause. The club’s ladies committee president Connie Fugazzotto said it was an “incredible effort”. “It was a good day, the first year we held the event it was reasonably small and has grown substantially over the years,” Ms Fugazzotto said. “Everybody had a great time and was very generous.” Esther Lauaki

Apprentice’s heavy lifting By Esther Lauaki Werribee’s James Greig showed his mettle at the recent Heavy Vehicle Industry Australia National Apprentice Challenge. The heavy vehicle apprentice and teammate Brett Holland clinched first place at the national challenge last month at the Brisbane Truck Show. The challenge involved three teams from across Australia working against the clock to identify and rectify a series of faults on identical trucks.

James and Brett were chosen to represent the southern region, including Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia, after claiming the top two placings at the regional qualifiers. Both are completing a certificate III in heavy commercial vehicle mechanical technology at Kangan Institute’s Automotive Centre of Excellence. James, who is a third-year apprentice technician at Westar Truck Centre in Derrimut, said the challenge was an invaluable experience that would help his future.

“As an apprentice, we don’t normally get to go interstate to compete in a national competition,” he said. “This was a really good experience and it’ll hopefully open a few doors for me later.” Kangan Institute chief Phill Murphy said the apprentices’ strong performance reflected their skills and passion in the trade. “Their first place win reflects the hard work they’ve put in,” Mr Murphy said. “It also reflects the skills and expertise that they’ve honed through years of training and practise at TAFE and the workplace.”

A new and improved Skeleton Creek Bridge in Point Cook is taking shape following a hefty crane operation that delivered 21 beams. Carried out over three nights between May 17 and 20, each beam took about an hour to move and install, with some of the beams weighing 60 tonnes. Major Road Projects Victoria project director Frank De Santis said the beam blitz was a major part of the Dunnings and Palmers roads upgrades. “This beam lift marks a huge milestone in our work to widen the Skeleton Creek Bridge to three lanes in both directions, including a dedicated bus lane on the Point Cook side of the bridge,” he said. “We hope drivers will be most impressed by the increased capacity of Skeleton Creek Bridge once work is complete.” Walking and cycling paths will be built on both sides of the 60-metre crossing to improve access on Palmers Road between Point Cook and Williams Landing.

Madam discovers joy in writing By Alesha Capone Brothel madam Lily Yang has penned an autobiography detailing her childhood in China and eventual journey to Australia. Yang – who is madam of The Cherry Tree Garden in Williamstown North – says her book, Take Memories, Leave Footprints, “doesn’t actually dwell too much on being a madam in a brothel”.

Rather, the book details how a young Lily and her family were exiled to a village in far north China to be “rehabilitated” during the Chinese Cultural Revolution before going on to detail her experiences growing to adulthood. Yang, who lives in Caroline Springs, described writing the book as “a wonderful experience”. “Writing is a bit like reading a book in reverse – one thing remembered leads to uncovering other unremembered things,” she said. “That was the real joy I found in writing. “I was lucky, as well, because I had grown up with storytellers, especially my father and an old Buddhist lady in the village when I was around 10 years old. I would sit enchanted by the ‘word paintings’ and the legends of old China and its superstitions.” Yang has written two previous books, one of which is based on the true story of a young girl in Cambodia who escaped from child sex slavery and gets help from Yang. Yang said proceeds from sales of her books go towards the Sunlight Foundation, a charity

she established to provide funds to rescue, rehabilitate and educate victims of child sex trafficking gangs in Asia. Yang said she wanted to “speak out”, on the issue.

Bay home for the Steve Irwin By Goya Dmytryshchak Standing on the helipad aboard Sea Shepherd’s decommissioned flagship vessel, the Steve Irwin, the view of the bay and Melbourne’s skyline is phenomenal. Yarraville’s Kerrie Goodall, founder of the Ship for Good philanthropic organisation, said the vessel will be permanently moored at Williamstown’s Seaworks maritime precinct. Ms Goodall has spearheaded a campaign to “Save the Steve”, which had been destined to be scrapped in Hong Kong. Ideas for the ship include live music on deck, a vegan restaurant, bar, barber, tattoo studio and accommodation in the quaint cabins. The ship’s anti-whaling history and last two campaigns – to stop the Adani coal mine and drilling in the Great Australian Bight – are portrayed in Defend, Conserve Protect, a documentary produced by Melbourne’s Stephen Amis. Narrated by Dan Aykroyd, the film won best international feature documentary at last year’s American Documentary Film Festival and will premiere at Yarraville’s Sun Theatre this month. Ms Goodall said although the Steve had been retired from Neptune’s Navy – the name of Sea Shepherd’s fleet – it still had a lot to give to the cause through entertainment, education and inspiration. “There’s a lot of love for the Sea Shepherd and what they do, and fortunately a lot of that love comes from wealthy and famous people,” she said. “Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis donated that retractable helideck to protect the helicopter, which was sent out to search for illegal fishing vessels. “Often, if it came into contact with Japanese

MY WYNDHAM Heather Brett’s favourite thing about living in a close-knit community such as Wyndham is the generosity of its people. The longtime Hoppers Crossing resident chats to Esther Lauaki about her work for the Royal Children’s Hospital. What’s your connection to Wyndham?

How long have you lived in the area?

I’m a grandmother of two grandsons and have six beautiful children. I recently helped the Werribee Mercy Auxiliary with fundraising through a book sale and barbecue.

We have lived here for 27 years.

What’s the quirkiest thing about you?

What are you passionate about?

I have an obsession with Dachshund dogs, I have always had one in our 50 years my husband and I have been married, and I take my knitting and crocheting with me everywhere.

We live in Hoppers Crossing.

Filling my retirement time helping the community. A craft group that I established at Heathglen Retirement Village. My garden. Tell us about your involvement with the Werribee Ladies for Kids Auxiliary for the Royal Children’s Hospital. I started with another RCH auxiliary at Roxborough Park and joined this group about 10 years ago when I discovered there was a more local group. Currently, I am the treasurer and I am also helping organise and run stalls at the RCH and other venues. Through my craft hobby, I was looking for an outlet for the items that I produced where I could help others. What other hats do you wear in the community?

What do you love about Werribee? The country suburb feel of the Wyndham area has always felt like home to us, having come from a country background. Closeness to the western district and city. The generosity of the community that continues to provide wool, material and craft supplies that help us continue our work. The support of the public at the fundraising stalls etc that we run at the RCH, Pacific Plaza and local shopping centres. What would you like to see improved? The city has progressed well since we moved here in 1991 and continues to improve.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir is at home at Yarraville’s new local The long-standing old fish and chip shop, opposite the vet where we take Boris the cat, is no more. In its place has arisen a swish-yet-welcoming cafe. Boma Coffee, a sister outfit for Kodama Coffee in Williamstown, has quickly made itself right at home – just as a heap of happy customers are doing likewise in their new local. The interior is compact and comfortable; and there are outside tables, too. The menu is succinct – breakfast various ways plus a handful of heftier brunch/lunch items. The beef burger ($18) looks like an austere outing given all the multi-layer architectureinspired versions going around. But simple is good – and this burger is very good. It has an Angus beef patty of chewy, tasty delight, along with cheese, tomato, lettuce, ketchup and mustard. Importantly, the dill pickle atop is crunchy and sour. The waffle fries are OK. But. Honestly, waffle fries appear to be a new gimmick. I just wish people would stop. Give me spuds – or something closely approximating them – every time. Still, this a fine burger that delivers deep pleasure through simplicity and great ingredients. The Boma Coffee superfood salad ($18) wins me over with similar elan. I might expect Bennie “Salad Boy” Weir to

BOMA COFFEE Address: 127 Stephen Street, Yarraville be a fan of this. Except it has kale. Indeed, my salad does sport a vibe that is perilously close to ernest. I keep on glancing at my feet, expecting to find myself wearing sandals. With socks. As well, the salad’s ingredient are all finely chopped, finding themselves just a few degrees short of being a smoothie. But the kale (yes!), quinoa, roasted corn, black turtle beans, tomato, avocado, toasted almonds and salted ricotta, all with a tangy japapeno and lime dressing, go down an absolute lip-smacking treat. My bowl is empty and shiny when I finish the lot. As you’d expect at a cafe that has the word “coffee” in its name, my cafe latte ($4) is terrific and has me gaily chirruping like a spink in spring. Boma Coffee is on a for-sure winner in terms of location. It was the costly loss that Werribee did not need nor deserve in the Hockey Victoria women’s Vic League 1. The Tigers had a chance to stay in touch with the top four ahead of the Queen’s Birthday break, but suddenly find themselves way down in seventh and five points off fourth spot. Tigers playing co-coach Samantha Winch admitted her frustration following a 4-3 defeat to Brunswick at President’s Park on Saturday. “I thought we came together as a team and played some really impressive hockey, but just couldn’t get over the line,” Winch said. “On the day, we were clearly the better team, we controlled most of it, but it just didn’t fall our way. “It’s sheer disappointment to lose this one. “It hurt even more than a normal loss because we knew we were the better side on the day.”

Werribee dictated the flow of the play for the most part. The Tigers also threatened in front of goal with Winch, Taia Leenstra and Cath Munro all scoring. Unfortunately for the Tigers, they had a hard time keeping Brunswick’s attackers in check. The Wicks only had sporadic forays into their attacking zone, but they were lethal. “They had limited opportunities as far as scoring, but when they had it there, they got the job done,” Winch said. Chloe Pickersgill was Werribee’s best player on the day. Pickersgill did a power of work in the full back role. Leenstra was busy at centre half, working hard both with her defence and setting up play. Winch reckons it is still hard to gauge where

Hawks’ revival rolls on By Lance Jenkinson Not in his wildest dreams did Glen Orden coach Phil Crea think his side would be 7-0 at the Queen’s Birthday break in the Western Region Football League division 3. Two years ago, the Hawks’ senior section was as good as dead, sitting out the whole of the 2017 season. The percentage of local football teams who abandon a season and return to the competition is small. The Hawks earned the respect back of their WRFL opponents when they resuscitated their senior section last season. Instead of just being happy to be back, Glen Orden has taken significant strides in 2019 to be a genuine premiership threat in the third tier. Crea is wary of labelling the Hawks a flag chance so early, but the ladder does not lie. “It’s a dream come true, I could never have expected us to be 7-0 when we started our pre-season,” he said. “I didn’t know much about the new players we had at that stage, so it’s been magnificent. “It’s been a really good start to the first seven games.” Glen Orden’s stirring 51-point win over one of the pre-season flag favourites Tarneit at Wootten Road Reserve on Saturday was not enough to sway Crea about his own side’s credentials. The Hawks kept the home side to just four goals and played an impressive style of football to excite the fans. They even managed to keep Tarneit scoreless in the last quarter. “It’s still hard to gauge where we’re really at right now,” Crea said. “It’s hard to go on this game because Tarneit had five senior players out and that probably made it a bit easier for us. All you can do is beat the side that is on the park.” Crea is adamant that Glen Orden has a lot of room to grow between now and the end of the season. The Hawks main issues to address are their discipline and adherence to team values. “I know this is going to sound harsh, but I’m still not happy with the way we’re playing at the moment,” Crea said “There’s a couple of issues we need to deal with. “It’s a bit of discipline at the moment, we’re giving away some 50s and we’ve got to cut that out, and players are not giving to the first options. “If we can work on those two issues before the end of the year, I think we can give it a really good shake.” Kur Kur claimed best-afield honours for

Defensively, Glen Orden was led by playing assistant coach Ash Peters, who provided directions for his fellow backmen, and Mark Yates, who did a lot of intercepting.

Werribee fits in the competition’s pecking order. The team has been hampered with injuries in recent weeks and results have suffered. What is for certain is the loss to Brunswick is a huge downer because they had set themselves to knock off the side one spot above them on the ladder. “We sort of had Brunswick in our sights to get them so we could cement ourselves higher on the ladder,” Winch said. “The feeling amongst the group is still real positive because we’re playing some impressive hockey. “We’re hoping to finish off the first half of the season on a positive note with a win [against MHSOB on June 15].” Lance Jenkinson

It was an important win for the Warriors, as it keeps them in touch with the top five going into the Queen’s Birthday break. The Warriors had five multiple goalkickers – three to Brenton Payne and two each to Jackson Viola, Joel Bentley, Riley Kitchen and Jordan Cook. Hoppers Crossing is sixth in the standings with a 4-3 record. Werribee Districts showed Point Cook who is the boss of Wyndham with a 125-point derby win at Saltwater Reserve. The Tigers set up their victory with a seven-goal-to-nil opening-term blitz. Chris Molivas was on target for the Tigers with six goals, while Dillon Viojo-Rainbow continued his stellar form. Werribee Districts is fourth with a 5-2 record after seven rounds. In division 2, Wyndhamvale ran away with a 75-point win over West Footscray, with Joel Russell jagging five goals. The Falcons remain two games clear on top with a 7-0 record. Point Cook Centrals took care of Newport on the road, winning by 13 points. Manor Lakes suffered its heaviest loss of the season, defeated by 92 points away to Parkside. In divison 3, Wyndham Suns copped an 88-point walloping from Sunshine Heights. Werribee Devils cruised to its ninth straight victory with a sweep on a double header weekend to move a game clear on top of the Big V basketball women’s state championship ladder, but is it championship-winning form? Devils coach Reece Potter has warned his team that it will need to improve after the Queen’s Birthday break if it is to keep hold of its spot at the top of the standings and challenge to bring an end to the supremacy of two-time defending champions Sunbury Jets. Potter is obviously pleased to see his team rewarded for its hard work over the first 11 games, taking a 10-1 record into the break, but is adamant they have not yet reached their ceiling and will need to do so to take out the title. “There’s definitely room for growth and improvement,” Potter said. “If we want to contend and keep in the top couple of spots going into finals, we’re going to have to continue to get better and adapt because the top teams will lift.

“Sunbury has put in some really big performances over the past month and they’ve put their whole team together now. “They’ll probably be the benchmark going into the back end of the season. “If you want to contend with teams like that, you’ve got to continue to improve, so that will be our challenge going into the last seven games of the season.” Werribee kick-started its double header round with an 88-71 win over Southern Peninsula Sharks at Eagle Stadium on Saturday. Reds turn on the style By Lance Jenkinson When Hoppers Crossing coach Shaun Barbara arrived at Grange Reserve on Saturday, he had a vision of the kind of bold play he wanted his players to serve up against Westgate. They delivered, notching up a 4-1 victory in Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 2 north-west. It did not all go to plan for the Reds, who had to withstand an early onslaught and a one-goal deficit. But once they got rolling, they produced an attacking brand that has become easily identifiable under Barbara. “That’s our style of play,” the coach said. “I like our team to be very pro-active and put teams on the back foot. “Apart from last year, which was a little bit difficult when you step up a division, from when I first got to the club that’s sort of my style and how I like to go about it. “The boys have adopted that, they really absorb it and they like it … it’s a style they implement really well.” There were some worrying signs for Hoppers Crossing early in the game. The first 20 minutes saw the Reds on the back foot and taking some significant punishment. “We came out of the blocks a little bit slowly and got punished for it with an early goal,” Barbara said. “They were definitely on top, but the boys steadied the ship. “We adjusted a few things as we were going along in the first half and started to get on top.” The turning point came late in the first half when Jason Hayne scored for Hoppers Crossing. It was the first of four unanswered goals from the Reds, including three in the second half. Hayne was the lead protagonist for the Reds with a hat-trick. Hard-working strike partner Liam McDermott scored the fourth. While Hoppers Crossing had all the momentum, the confidence had long seeped away from Westgate. Westgate would end up frustrated with 10 men after Vedran Stojanovic was brandished a second yellow card. “We’re finding a really good balance at the moment with our defence, which coincides with the last two results,” Barbara said.
