Werribee’s Andrew Elsbury needs a team who will click over their love for tiny colourful bricks. Planning has begun for a Wyndham Lego Expo to unite enthusiasts from all over the west while raising money for Werribee Mercy Hospital’s new paediatric ward. Mr Elsbury said he was organising the event “from the baseplate up” and needs volunteers to help him lock in a venue, decide on the contests and everything in between. He’s been hooked on Lego since he was a child. “My first Lego set was a police car and my affinity for the brick was born,” Mr Elsbury said. “Today, as a dad, I build Lego with my daughters and enjoy seeing their creativity.” He said the Wyndham Lego Expo would be a chance for people to share their love of the toy and raise funds for a good cause. “The more money we raise means additional services and improved experiences for the children in our community,” Mr Elsbury said. “I envisage a number of events to make up the expo including an engineering contest which I hope schools would want to participate.” Register: bit.ly/2Vu9hBb Esther Lauaki

MPs returned in Labor loss By Alesha Capone and Goya Dmytryshchak Labor’s Joanne Ryan has comfortably retained the seat of Lalor after last weekend’s federal election. On Monday, with more than three quarters of the votes counted, Ms Ryan held 52.13 per cent (40,299 votes) of first-preference votes, a swing of 0.43 per cent to Labor since the last federal election. Liberal Party candidate Gayle Murphy held 30.20 per cent (23,346) of first preference votes.

The Greens candidate Jay Dessi, who quit the election race after the ballot papers were printed, held 7.55 per cent (5834) of the first preference votes. United Australia Party candidate Jeffrey Edward Robinson held 4.58 per cent (3542 votes) of the first preference votes and Australia First Party candidate Sue Jakobi held 4.35 per cent (3362 votes). On a two-party preferred basis, between Labor and the Liberals, Ms Ryan received 62.38 per cent (48,219) of the votes and Mr Murphy 37.62 per cent (29,083) of the votes.

Mr Watts polled 49.51 per cent (39,892) of the primary vote, representing a 3.28 per cent swing to Labor. Soccer club hit by player walkout By Esther Lauaki Inhouse fighting has been blamed for a mass walkout of players from the only senior women’s soccer team in Wyndham. Star Weekly has been told the president and coach of Hoppers Crossing senior women’s soccer team stood down at a meeting on April 28. As a result, up to 23 of the team’s players chose to leave the club. A bullying complaint has been filed with Football Federation Victoria.

A letter from the club, seen by Star Weekly, confirms there have been “allegations of bullying by certain members of the senior women’s team”. The letter states that an “external investigator will be appointed”.

“We at Hoppers Crossing Soccer Club consider all matters of harassment and bullying potentially unsafe for our members, supporters, volunteers and players,” the letter stated. “Hoppers Crossing Soccer Club is committed to providing an environment that is free from bullying.” A parent from the club, who asked not to be named, said she was disappointed that in-fighting had resulted in so many players leaving the club. She said she believed the FFV and Hoppers

Crossing Soccer Club management had not attempted to mediate or provide solutions. “The club or the FFV have shown no response to these players deregistering from the club,” she said. “We don’t want this matter swept under the rug.” Football Federation Victoria and Hoppers Crossing Soccer Club were contacted for comment. It is understood the club was able to field a senior women’s team last weekend when some of it junior players stepped up.

Angelina Matekohi carries her granddaughter in her heart every day. The Truganina grandmother’s focus will be on her late namesake, Angelina, born at 23 weeks on April 20 last year, when she takes on the Stadium Stomp charity race next month. “She had many obstacles to overcome because she was born far too soon,” Ms Matekohi said. “My Angelina passed away on October 5, 2018.” Ms Matekohi has racked up five medals from charity walks she completed around Victoria and overseas in her granddaughter’s honour.

Permits are required for planned burn-offs, even when they’re outside the official fire danger period – that’s the word from Wyndham council to residents. Community safety portfolio holder Kim McAliney said that although fire danger was reduced during the cooler months, grass remained dry. “We are just coming out of months of heat and little rainfall, so there is plenty of dry fuel on the ground that could ignite and spread wide if a fire gets out of hand,” Cr McAliney said. “We know many farms and households are responsible when it comes to legal burning, but our emergency services need to be alerted to what areas they should be observing this autumn. “Fire permits are not issued for blocks less than one hectare because fires are not permitted on such properties, but the green waste [from them] can be taken to the refuse disposal facility.” Wyndham residents receive a 50 per cent discount for green waste. “There are many alternatives to burning, especially for residential property owners,” Cr McAliney said. She said a great way to get rid of natural refuse was using a green bin. “Other ways to remove larger natural debris, such as tree branches, is to use a chipper and spread the mulch,” she said. Residents found lighting fires without a permit could be hit with a $200 fine. Burn permits are available by application on the council website for $50. Pupils at a Hoppers Crossing school learnt about the finer points of dance when The Australian Ballet visited last week. Professional dancers and specialist educators from the ballet company called into Derrimut Heath Primary School, which is part of Baden Powell College, on Friday. Grade 5 and 6 pupils from the college participated in the STEAMDANCE program, funded by the ballet companyâ€™s donors and sponsors, which visits 12 schools across Australia every year. STEAMDANCE uses dance to help teach children about the STEAM subjects, science, technology, engineering, arts and maths, through workshops.

Dancers from The Australian Ballet also put on a performance of Coppelia for the Baden Powell students. The ballet companyâ€™s head of education Katy McKeown said STEAMDANCE offered children a fun experience of dance and â– encouraged students of all ages, abilities and language backgrounds to develop their physical and social skills. Over the past decade, The Australian Balletâ€™s education program, which focuses on outer metropolitan, rural and regional areas, has given more than 130,000 children across the nation the opportunity to experience dance.

Point Cook farewells favourite son By Esther Lauaki Point Cook has lost a young “superhero”. Josh Erikson, 18, died in the early hours of Mother’s Day (May 12) after a long battle with glioblastoma multiforme – brain cancer. Tributes have flowed over the past week describing Josh as an “incredible human being”, kind, memorable and brave. The teen and his family had experienced a tougher life than many. Josh, who was born profoundly deaf, was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2005 and beat it after a bone marrow transplant from his eldest brother.

He remained cancer free for years, but in 2016 he was diagnosed with a GM tumour, for which there is no cure. Josh’s mother, Donna Erikson-Rigby, said her heart had been “shattered into a million pieces”. “As his Mumma and best friend I am so incredibly proud of the strength and courage he has shown the last 18 years,” Ms Erikson-Rigby said in a post to the Mr Braveheart-Team Josh Facebook page. “He had defied the odds so many times. “He has inspired so many people all over the world. Joshy would walk into a room and not remember people’s names but one thing’s

for sure is that everyone in that room would remember him.” As a tribute to Josh’s love for Marvel comics, friends and family formed a guard of honour at his funeral last Thursday in Williamstown dressed as his favourite characters. Members of the Point Cook Rocks Facebook group have put out a call for anyone who would like to paint rocks with Marvel characters to decorate Josh’s memorial garden. Decorated rocks, in the Marvel or rainbow theme or with the words Team Josh or Braveheart, can be dropped in at the Stockland Customer Care Centre in Point Cook town centre until May 24.

Racism keeps police busy Police in the state’s north west metro region have responded to hundreds of prejudiciallymotivated crimes within a five-year period, with more than half of the offences related to a victim’s race or ethnicity. Victoria Police data shows there were 528 “prejudicially-motivated” crimes recorded in the northwest – which covers 14 municipalities, including Wyndham, Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton, Moonee Valley, Hume and Whittlesea – between January 2014 and December 2018. This included 341 offences related to race/ ethnicity, 121 related to religion, 111 related to sexual orientation, 94 related to political beliefs and 21 related to disability. Brimbank’s Acting Police Inspector Terrence West said people who experienced or witnessed prejudice-motivated crime, including online crime, should report it to the police. “Victoria Police is here to help – we do not tolerate violence and we take all crime seriously, including that which is motivated by prejudice, racism or discrimination,” he said. Acting Inspector West said crime reports indicated that prejudice-motivated crime could occur in public places, retail environments and residential premises. “This may include threats to kill, threats to inflict serious injury, stalking, assault, destroying or damaging property, including

graffiti and threats to destroy or damage property,” he said. “We know that crimes motivated by prejudice cause serious harm to victims, often leaving them, and their communities, feeling vulnerable, threatened and isolated.

“There is no justification for prejudice-motivated violence here in Victoria.” Acting Inspector West said Victoria Police has a number of Multicultural Liaison Officers (MLOs) who could help victims of prejudice-based crime to make a report. WEstjustice chief executive Denis Nelthorpe said the organisation sometimes heard from clients who were subjected to racist comments in public. Mr Nelthorpe said while some people who committed such acts could be mentally ill or affected by drugs or alcohol, it could also occur when people were “uneducated or racist”. Victims of racism or discrimination can contact their local police station, or triple-0 in an emergency. Tony serves up an ace Tarneit’s Tony Warland is an ace tennis official. Mr Warland has been named one of three finalists in the Official of the Year category at the annual Victorian Disability Sport and Recreation Awards, which will be held on May 22. He said he was “pretty excited” when a Tennis Australia employee rang him to say he would be nominated for the award. Mr Warland is an International Tennis Federation-qualified referee and is a linesperson. He has been officiating at tennis matches for 27 years, and for the past nine years has served at the national and state championships for players with an intellectual disability.

“I just love it,” Mr Warland said. “They want to play by the rules and they don’t want any special treatment.” Mr Warland has also officiated at 26 Australian Opens. Warland said his “two biggest claims to fame” were being positioned on the baseline during a final between Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, and calling a serve in a final played by Maria Sharapova and Ana Ivanovic. Travel bill cops a fare whack By Esther Lauaki Wyndham residents have labelled the latest overseas trips by two council delegations a “waste of money”. Ratepayers will shoulder $80,000 in travel costs to send four Wyndham councillors, the council’s chief executive and two directors to China and the US on official business, as reported in Star Weekly last week. We are faced with abuse of ratepayer’s money, we have Google, live streaming, conference calling at our fingertips. “Money wasted, as was the rubbish recycling trips we funded some years back, nothing that cannot be done with simple communication.”

One resident commended the council for its transparency about the travel and encouraged residents to keep council accountable for achieving the trips’ objectives. Cr Shaw said the sister cities relationship, two years in the making, would provide access to new opportunities. “I understand that some people are not always supportive of overseas travel,” she said. “However, given that we are set to be the size of Canberra, we need to make things happen for ourselves and generate investment for jobs and infrastructure.”

Kids’ vid is top viewing Al-Taqwa College in Truganina has been selected as one of three national winners of a competition aimed at encouraging families to eat more fresh fruit and vegetables. As part of the Coles Fresh Rainbow Challenge, schools were invited to create videos showcasing the Rainbow Challenge. Al-Taqwa pupils made a video featuring a prototype fresh fruit and vegie delivery drone. The school will receive a $5000 prize, which will go towards supporting healthy eating initiatives, including a weekly breakfast club. The pupils will also receive a cooking demonstration from Coles’ professional development chefs. Al-Taqwa assistant head of teacher and student services grade 6, Obayda Kannouj, said children at the college enjoyed creating their video. “We used the big idea of drone delivery

to show how easy the challenge to eat all the colours of the rainbow is,” she said. “The process of creating the video made us realise how receptive the students are to eating more fruits and vegetables and they were so excited to play a starring role in the production.” The two other winning schools in the competition were Our Lady of Fatima in Rosebud and Calderwood Christian School in New South Wales. Sinking path prompts warning By Esther Lauaki A Hoppers Crossing resident fears pedestrians will be seriously injured because of the sinking, cracked footpath and nature strip outside his home. Louis Zahra met councillors last week to push for repairs outside his Sycamore Street home after he narrowly avoided a tumble on the fractured concrete at the end of his driveway. “It’s been like that since we moved here about three years ago,” Mr Zahra said. “We’ve had a problem with sinking of the nature strip and the path for a while.”

He said development in the street had disturbed dirt beneath the footpath and that flooding around his property had become an issue. The 67-year-old, who uses a mobility walker because of severe sciatica and heart problems, told councillors of his safety concerns. “I’m walking with the walker and I hit my toe when I tripped up – that’s what made me speak up,” Mr Zahra said. “I see workers fixing up the road but not fixing up the nature strips. “You don’t realise how hard it is to avoid a fall on damaged footpaths until you’re sick … I hope they do something because someone is

going to get hurt because there is a lot of elderly people who walk here and you can’t walk.” Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw called Mr Zahra in April when he flagged his concerns about the footpath, saying she wanted to see the issue first-hand and discuss solutions. “The matter is quite complex and council is now taking steps to investigate the best way forward to resolve Mr Zahra’s concerns,” Cr Shaw said. “As the reconstruction of this footpath is complex and affects infrastructure from other agencies, such as Melbourne Water and Powercor, we will work alongside them to address the issues.”

Young Wyndham Vale resident Sabrin Nyawela is using sport to engage with the community in both a personal and professional capacity. Ms Nyawela, 20, plays in division one for the VU Western Spurs in Footscray and works at Golf Australia (GA) as a participation officer for inclusion. Ms Nyawela said she enjoyed forming “meaningful connections with the team at GA and the wider community”. “We are aware that several people from migrant and multicultural backgrounds play golf, or at the very least have an appetite for golf, but just don’t know how to get involved,” she said. “What we’re trying to do now as an organisation is show people how accessible golf really is, and that it is a sport for all.” Ms Nyawela came to Australia with her

family at the age of five after they fled the war in South Sudan. She became involved in football after her brother started playing. “I love playing footy for the Spurs, I played my 50th game with them the other week,” Ms Nyawela said. “We’re four rounds in and have won every game, all due to the fact that we’re a close team and constantly working to build each other up.” Ms Nyawel said for the past two to three years she has also coached in the AFL Victoria’s All Nations program. “The program aims to empower young girls aged 12 to 15 to not only develop their footy skills but also some personal development they can apply to their community, culture, school, etc and create lifelong friendships,” she said. Paper makes the cut More than 4000 tonnes of paper and cardboard a month are saved from the tip thanks to ethical recycling company One Paper. The Laverton North business aims to reduce the environmental impact of paper processing. Director Stephen Pighin said One Paper performs an integral role in the west. “Today we process over 4000 tonnes of recycling product per month, we couldn’t have done it in the place we were previously in,” Mr Pighin said. “The best thing about being in Laverton North is the close proximity and easy access to the roads heading south east, south west, north and the city precinct.” One Paper has entered into this year’s Wyndham Business Awards in the logistics category.

Guilty plea over terror plot By Adam Cooper The brother of Hassan Khalif Shire Ali, the man who killed restaurant owner Sisto Malaspina in last year’s Bourke Street terror incident, has pleaded guilty over a plot to gun down New Year’s Eve revellers at Federation Square. Ali Khalif Shire Ali, 22, was preparing to stand trial in the Supreme Court but pleaded guilty last Wednesday to a single terrorism charge. The then-university student, an Australian-born Muslim, was arrested in November, 2017 not far from his Werribee

home and has been in custody ever since. He had been monitored by police for months before his arrest. Police have previously said Ali was in possession of an al-Qaeda guidebook, although they believe he was a sympathiser with rival terror group Islamic State. It can now be revealed Ali’s older brother Hassan Khalif Shire Ali was the man who killed Mr Malaspina, much-loved owner of Pellegrini’s Espresso Bar, in a terror attack in Bourke Street on November 9 last year. Hassan, 30, drove a ute packed with gas cylinders to near the top of the Bourke Street

mall and set them alight and then fatally stabbed Mr Malaspina. He stabbed two other men, Tasmanian businessman Rod Patterson and a security guard identified as Shadi. Hassan then confronted police and was shot by an officer. He died in hospital that night. The day after the attack, the Supreme Court imposed a suppression order preventing media from reporting that Ali and Hassan were brothers, given Ali was at that point awaiting trial, and any coverage of the family link was considered prejudicial. The court ordered media that had published stories naming the pair as brothers remove

those details from online articles. Justice John Champion on Wednesday revoked that suppression order after Ali pleaded guilty to one charge of doing an act in preparation or planning for a terror act. Ali was in court, supported by his father and other family friends, to enter his plea. His plea came after about a fortnight of pre-trial legal argument. Justice Champion remanded him in custody to return to court for a plea hearing on August 23. – Sydney Morning Herald

Jazzing up Wyndham A jazz jamboree is coming to Wyndham next month. On Sunday, June 9, Chicago will be screened at the Wyndham Cultural Centre. The Sunday Movie Club screening of the musical’s screen adaptation event will also feature live acts from some of Melbourne’s best burlesque performers, drag queens and cabaret artists. Attendees will be encouraged to join in singalongs, costume competitions and games. Wyndhams arts, culture and heritage portfolio holder Tony Hooper said Sunday Movie Club events had been a huge hit. “Most of our shows, including The Rocky Horror Picture Show, have had record sales, so make sure you book early,” Cr Hooper said. “It’s great to see the audience members dress up and feel like they are part of the performance.”

Another event to get Wyndham into a jazz groove will be held on Friday, June 14. Live Jazz in the Library at the Plaza Library at Pacific Werribee will be rocked by the Slipdixies. The band, which often plays at music festivals, is known for its New Orleans-inspired sounds of 1920s and 1930s jazz and blues. The gig, for people aged 18-plus, will run from 7am-10pm. Walk into a healthy life A Hoppers Crossing school has launched an initiative aimed at encouraging children and families to become more active. On Friday (May 17), which was National Walk Safely to School Day, Woodville Primary School celebrated the launch of its Active Travel Program, in the hope of getting more pupils – and their parents and carers – to walk or ride a bicycle to school on a regular basis. The Active Travel Program also includes traffic safety education. The initiative was launched at Woodville Primary School with support from Wyndham council’s Active Travel To School program, which offers grants of up to $5000 to assist local primary schools to reduce traffic congestion and to encourage youngsters to walk, ride and scoot to school.

Bid to stop Palmers Road works By Esther Lauaki Williams Landing residents are fighting to stop the Palmers Road upgrade which they believe will “destroy lives”. Palmers Road is one of Wyndham’s busiest roads, with about 20,000 cars and trucks travelling along it daily, and is under construction as part of the Western Roads Upgrade. Works to widen the road, which runs between Princes and Western freeways, to include three lanes in each direction, began this year.

Wade Green attended a community meeting this month, held by Major Road Projects Victoria with residents who live in the project’s “impact zone” and said people were misinformed about the scale of the development. “Residents from non-English speaking backgrounds are shocked … and felt discriminated that the government assumed their communal plan took into consideration their situation,” Mr Green wrote in a letter to the project managers on behalf of a group of fellow residents.

“We strongly request all teams involved not to commence the project until the pending questions … and a clear view is provided.” Mr Green’s main concern was the widened road would produce excessive noise and pollution and eliminate open green spaces. “We are a diverse community – with young children, shift workers, home-based businesses, new Australians and retirees who have all built lives inside a relatively quiet and pollution free greenfield development, the Cedar Woods Williams Landing Estate,” he said. “We paid extra to have the amenity of open

spaces and the beauty of air cleansing trees. “Traffic noise and pollution destroys lives.” Project director Frank De Santis said Major Road Projects Victoria would continue to work closely with residents. “We’ve delivered tens of thousands of information sheets to residents, hundreds of people have attended our community information sessions and thousands more had their say via online consultation,” Mr De Santis said. He said green space would be provided through the upgrade.

She said that before EYOP began, these young people would usually only talk to a youth worker over the phone about 24 to 48 hours after coming into contact with police. Hundreds of young people have benefited from a $1.7 million pilot program designed to cut youth crime in Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong. The state government last year allocated funding for Youth Support and Advocacy Service (YSAS) workers to work with police across the three municipalities for 12 months. The Embedded Youth Outreach Project (EYOP) was launched to engage with people aged 12 to 24 who come into contact with police to provide support over issues such as family relationships, alcohol or drug abuse, unemployment and mental health. Senior Sergeant Jason Forster, speaking to Star Weekly earlier this month, said EYOP workers had assisted more than 400 young people in the west. He said the figure included young people who were victims of crime, homeless and reported as missing, as well as young offenders.

Apart from 101 Overton Road, Cedar Woods’ commercial portfolio in Williams Landing consists of the new Target Australia headquarters, an office building within the Williams Landing Shopping Centre and two other buildings which are under construction: 111 Overton Road, a strata building which completely sold out prior to construction, and 107 Overton Road, which has been leased to the state government’s Minister for Finance.

A plaque has been installed to honour a tree planted at the corner of Princes Highway and Sneydes Road in Werribee, in 1928. Known as the “Governor’s Tree” and “Governor’s Gum”, the sugar gum (eucalyptus cladocalyx) was planted in honour of William Calder, the former chairman of the Country Roads Board, which extended and upgraded much of the state’s roads network. The plaque was installed under a state government project led by VicRoads after Tarneit horticulturalist and heritage tree researcher Charlie Buttigeig helped to uncover the sugar gum’s history. Mr Buttigieg said he was grateful to those in the Wyndham community who had helped with his research, including Charmaine Wakefield, Colin Moss and the late Gwenda Kay. Mr Buttigieg said Lance Pritchard from the Werribee District Historical Society had also helped to establish that the tree was planted exactly one mile from the former Werribee post office. “My name may appear on the plaque, but my name is an umbrella name which celebrates the involvement of people in the community,” Mr Buttigieg said. MY WYNDHAM James Hohepa never shies away from hard work or the good fight. The Werribee resident spoke with Esther Lauaki about his vision for the community. What’s your connection to Wyndham? I’m originally from “New Zullund” – from the top of the North Island in Kaitaia, but I now live in Manor Lakes. How long have you lived/worked in the area? I retired from the New Zealand Army after 17 years in 2003 and we moved over here straight away, purchased a house here, and we’ve been here ever since. There was nothing here at the time, no train station, no shopping centre, it was brand new. Tell us about your background. I served in Singapore for three years with the New Zealand Army, then was part of the United Nations protection force in Bosnia in 1994 and East Timor in 1999. Once I returned, I did a stint, until I retired in 2003, with the NZ limited services volunteers – a bootcamp for unemployed youth. The youth in that program sign up on the national unemployment scheme and have 18 months to get a job. Failing that, they can opt to participate in boot camp or receive the benefit for six weeks. Most chose bootcamp. Why did you decide to start up the Maori Wardens in Werribee? My military background and working with

youth lead me to where I am in the Wyndham community today. I was one of the four founding members of the Maori Wardens. It all came about when myself and other elders in our community were concerned about our Maori and Pacific youth in the streets in Wyndham. We started with five volunteers. What other hats do you wear in the community? I’m president of Nga Hoe Waka kapa haka

group, a community committee member for the Safe Communities and cultural diversity portfolios with Wyndham council. I’m also the president of the NZRSL sub-branch of Victoria and a founding member of the Iwi Riders Victoria – a social motorcycling club. What do you hope to achieve in Werribee? There are a lot of traffic issues, road issues and you can’t do much about that unless you’re in government. But you can still try and make a

difference. I would like to run for council at some point in the future. I have no political agenda, I just want to be there for the people. What’s something people don’t know about you? I’m very humble and I engage with everybody no matter what their age or background. Being a senior prison officer enables you to engage with those with varied history and attitude issues as well as our kaumatua (elders).

Racing into new tech Manor Lakes man Karthik Viswanathan has created a new platform for runners to connect. Mr Viswanathan, a keen runner himself, launched the technology start-up BibVault earlier this year. He described BibVault as “an online recognition platform” that provides runners with a central place to view all of their race results and search for upcoming races. Runners can also redeem a percentage of their entry fees from race events in return for rewards from businesses, such as cafes and sports clubs. Mr Viswanathan said he was thrilled when BibVault was last year selected to take part in Enterprising Wyndham, a mentoring program developed by Wyndham council, the Scanlon

Foundation and the Centre for Multicultural Youth, aimed at helping Wyndham residents to develop their own business. Mr Viswanathan said he started running nine years ago, when he moved from Melbourne to Sydney for work, as a way to explore his new city. While in Sydney, he ended up entering City 2 Surf, a race of 14 kilometres. “As an experiment to push myself to explore my true potential, I signed up for it and to my surprise I managed to complete it huffing and puffing, but it was joyful,” he said. Instructions to close Brophy’s Crossing were received by the Railways’ Geelong engineering branch last Tuesday. And at 10.44am last Wednesday a seven-year-old girl was killed when her mother’s car and a Geelong-bound train collided on the level crossing.

The number of cars that accidentally run off the road near the Maltby Bypass in Werribee is the third highest record on state freeways. This was the horrifying statistic put forward during a heated debate between Werribee councillors, last Monday week, about the increasing number of car accidents in the municipality.

The race for the state seat of Werribee has taken an interesting twist, with Councillor David McLaren endorsed as the Liberal Party candidate and Councillor Shane Bourke refusing to rule out running as an independent at the forth-coming election. The poll must be held before July 2000.

The final stage of Point Cook Senior Secondary College has been fast-tracked with an unexpected funding announcement in the state budget last week. Principal Greg Sperling admitted he was not expecting the funding and found out about the $7 million from his sickbed on Tuesday.

SPORT Werribee pays a hefty price for complacency Werribee was given the whack it deserved in a 4-1 thrashing at the hands of previously winless North West Lightning in Hockey Victoria men’s Vic League 1 in Bendigo on Saturday. The Tigers got a reminder that hockey matches are not won on paper and nothing less than a peak performance will suffice in a tough competition. Tigers co-coach Jayden Street was disappointed with the laissez-faire approach of his team. “Going up to their home ground, we might have got a bit complacent,” he said. “We didn’t come with our best hockey and it probably cost us. To play a team a bit lower on the ladder, we were hoping to come out with a good result. “Things didn’t go our way and we didn’t play the game of hockey we would’ve liked to.” The biggest contrast in the game was between the pressure applied by the two sides. While every Werribee possession was met with

resistance, the Lightning were afforded space to move and made full use of it. “Their effort and intensity towards the ball was a bit higher than ours,” Street said. “They stuck to their structures a bit more in the game. That’s something we’ll have to rectify during training.” If there was a positive for Werribee, it was the performances of emerging players Daniel Manzie and Jacob Friedl. Manzie scored the Tigers’ only goal and was constantly presenting up front. Friedl did his best work on the last line, his defensive efforts stemming the bleeding somewhat. Werribee is a mid-table team after six rounds. The Tigers have a mixed bag of results with two wins, three losses and a draw, so their season is at a crossroad. They will be eager to claim a scalp when they travel to third-placed PEGS on Saturday.

“We expect for them to come well drilled and be on their game from the start,” Street said. “We’ve got to make sure we’re switched on from the very start.” In women’s Vic League 1, Werribee was full of grit in a 4-4 draw with North West Lightning. The Tigers were bruised through three injuries picked up during the game, but they refused to wave the white flag. “It was a real tough effort by the girls,” Street said. “They were a bit undermanned, but played a really good game.” Holly Stewart was outstanding for Werribee with two goals, while Taia Di Natale and co-coach Sam Winch also scored. Bears in a mean mood By Lance Jenkinson Werribee Bears are proving a tough nut to crack in NRL Victoria women’s first grade. The ruthless reigning premiers have conceded a mere seven tries in seven games to sit on top of the ladder. Bears coach Chris Kilgarriff said his players had an appetite to compete on defence every set. “We pride ourselves on our defence,” he said. “The fact that we scored 50 points is not really a biggie – it’s that we keep teams to zero.” The Bears are watertight in defence and can make you look silly by posting big scores of their own. They offer different yet complementary leadership models. “They’re big leaders on the field and they’re great role models for the girls,” Kilgarriff said. “The girls look up to them for guidance and they lead by example. “Natasha is a quality player and more of a quiet achiever. “She doesn’t really speak her leadership, but she shows it in her actions. “Tiana is more vocal and her actions show on the field, as well.” While Werribee is the defending champion, sits on top of the ladder and has scored the most points and conceded on average the least, it is not an outright premiership favourite. The Bears’ undefeated local rivals, Truganina Rabbitohs, the only team to beat them this

season, loom large. Until the Bears can beat Truganina, there will be question marks over their status. “We’re pretty happy with the performances we’re putting out week in, week out,” Kilgarriff said. “The players just really want to test themselves now, so they can’t wait to play the Rabbitohs again.” Werribee will play Northern Thunder this weekend – or so they think. Kilgarriff is not happy with NRL Victoria’s inability to produce a season-long fixture for women’s first grade, despite having had one out for months for the men’s competitions. “We’re waiting for the league to give us our total draw so we can start preparing for our games well ahead instead of week to week,” he said. “They’ve put out the full men’s draw, but the women’s draw is week to week. “Our women get left behind. It’s pretty poor when they’re trying to promote women in league.”

Werribee Devils came out with all guns blazing in a 97-80 victory over Hume City Broncos in the Big V basketball women’s state championship at Eagle Stadium on Saturday night. The Devils piled on 37 first-quarter points to lead by 13 at the first break and kept the lead throughout. Sarah Elsworthy top-scored for the Devils with 28 points, while Alisia Jenkins had a big double-double 27 points and 16 rebounds. Coaches Jessica Lane, who rides in the national road series team Total Rush, and Jake Coward, who rides for a Belgian team, were on hand to offer advice and guidance. The big challenge was the Queen of the Moment event at Lorne, with Dianne Edwards emerging victorious. A number of riders bested their previous longest distance on a bike at the camp, which the club is hoping to make an annual event.

Inaccuracy crushes Western Region’s interleague hopes

The Western Region Football League never had a semblance of control over the scoreboard during its 42-point loss to Goulburn Valley Football League in the AFL Victoria Community Championship interleague clash on home soil at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday. The WRFL’s best took on the Goulburn Valley region in a mouth-watering encounter, but the hosts were made to rue both their inaccuracy in front of goal and inability to hit targets inside 50 under pressure. A lot of the WRFL’s shots were from long distances, which was reflected in the team’s poor conversion of four goals from 18 shots. “They had a spare behind the footy during play and we just didn’t do a good enough job of rounding him,” WRFL coach Brad Julier said. “A lot of our shots were from 40 to 50 metres out instead of 20 to 30 metres, which we would’ve liked. “We just couldn’t get it deep enough inside 50

to get a good shot on goal. “A lot of it was rushed, their pressure was pretty good.” Julier was pleased with the fight shown by the WRFL players, who played catch up as they trailed at every change. Had it not been for their inaccuracy in the final quarter, the WRFL might have had an unlikely comeback. “We were sort of hanging around all day,” he said. “The last quarter we challenged, but kicking seven behinds in that quarter didn’t help us.” Josh Macdonald was named the WRFL’s best for his impact on the wing. Macdonald was praised for his willingness to work both ways. “He used the footy well and his work rate was sensational,” Julier said. Daniel Nielson was the pick of the WRFL defenders for his work across half-back. His reading of the play stood out. “The ball came in quite a bit, but he was rock solid in the defence,” Julier said.

Brydon Hodgson put his body on the line for the cause in the midfield. “He crashed and bashed for us,” Julier said. “They were a pretty solid side size-wise but he used his body well and worked really hard in there for us.” While the result was not what the WRFL desired, the success of the occasion strengthened the league’s appetite for interleague football. Julier was impressed by the support of the top club, the players and the league officials. “There was great buy-in from a lot of the competition’s best players,” he said. “I think we had 17 WRFL juniors in the side – guys that have played all their junior footy with the WRFL – so there’s definitely a lot of talent there and we’re keen to keep pushing that. “It’s a big step forward for representative football in the WRFL.” Lance Jenkinson

Speedster on track for glory By Lance Jenkinson Matthew Payne is scorching athletics tracks across Australia with his speed. The 15-year-old from Newport is one of the standout sprinters in his age group in the nation. He was a force at the state championships and showed his potential at the nationals to complete a sensational summer in athletics. Payne puts his success down to his commitment to improve. “When I want something, I go very hard for it,” he said. Payne ran to glory in the 100 metres and 200 metres at the Athletics Victoria State Track and Field Championships. The Williamstown Athletic Club member used the wins as a springboard for his season. “Knowing I could win the 100 metres and 200 metres at state level against the previous national champion, who was from my state, gave me a lot of confidence,” Payne said. “That was probably where my best form was in regards to personal bests and times. “I just went out there and ran my absolute best in good conditions against really good athletes.” Payne went on to represent Victoria at the Australian Athletics Championships. The Maribyrnong College student was due to compete in two events – the 100 metres and 200 metres – but a hamstring strain cost him the chance to compete in the 200. While that was a setback, Payne was able to show off his talents in the 100 metres, returning with a cherished silver medal. “That would be my main highlight so far,” Payne said. “I went up with somewhat of an

expectation of myself to win a medal – whether it was necessarily gold, silver or bronze, I didn’t really mind. I was just over the moon when I crossed the line and found out that I came second. “It wasn’t much of a margin – I think he [Ashley Wong] beat me by 0.07, so there was nothing in it.” Payne has tremendous support in the form of coaches Robert Spencer (Williamstown

Athletics) and David Battistella (Maribyrnong College). Spencer praised Payne’s desire to improve and his ruthless mentality on the starting blocks. “I believe that Matthew takes feedback very well and is able to apply it immediately as he is constantly wanting to improve,” Spencer said. “His determination and fierce competitiveness under pressure is second to none.

“Matthew deserves these successes as he always is holding himself to a higher standard.” Payne got his start in athletics in 2012 as a member of the Williamstown Little Athletics Centre. It was not until 2016 that he began to take the sport seriously after winning a medal at the state championships. His first love is Australian rules and his dream is to play in the AFL. The Western Bulldogs supporter intends to take the elite pathways in both footy and athletics for the time being. The Williamstown Juniors midfielder played in the School Sports Victoria football team last year and is trying out for the team again this year. The question that will inevitably pop up in the coming years for Payne is whether he ultimately decides on athletics or football. Right now, he can’t answer that. “I love them both the same at the moment,” Payne said. “I still want to do athletics as it’s complementing my football a lot. “I’ll do that all the way up until I’m told not to by a coach. Or if footy doesn’t work out I’ll continue athletics.” Payne is aiming to be part of the Western Jets under-16 squad for next season. Payne is the May nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and or national levels. Payne will receive $1000 and other prizes, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club to assist him in achieving his sports goals.
