Ollie makes Mother’s Day Point Cook mother Nicole Parkinson will have several reasons to celebrate on Sunday. It will be the first Mother’s Day Ms Parkinson spends with her three-month-old son, Oliver Jack, also known as Ollie. Ollie was born nine weeks premature, to Ms Parkinson and her husband Brad, at Werribee Mercy Hospital. Because of his early birth, Oliver was transferred to the Mercy Hospital for Women in Heidelberg, where he spent almost two weeks, before being transferred back to the Special Care Nursery at Werribee Mercy. A brother to sisters Ruby, aged five, and Emily, aged 17, Oliver is a happy and healthy youngster. Oliver was the most popular name for boys born in Australia last year. More than 2060 infants were christened with the moniker, followed by William (with 1740 names) and Jack (1595 names). Railing against Libs’ list By Alesha Capone The western suburbs have been overlooked in a federal Liberal government promise to spend $300 million on new carparks at Melbourne train stations if the party is re-elected at the upcoming federal election. The Liberals said the funding would go towards new “park and ride facilities” at 30 Melbourne stations on the Belgrave/Lilydale, Frankston, Sandringham, Craigieburn, South Morang and Hurstbridge train lines. The state government and Wyndham council expressed disappointment there were no western suburbs stations included. Victorian Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan told SBS she believed that the

announcement was a “political stunt”. Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw said that commuter parking at Wyndham’s railway stations was “at capacity”. “We’re disappointed that there have not been any commitments to address parking at Wyndham’s train stations by the Liberal National coalition during this election,” she said. “Wyndham is one of the fastest growing municipalities in Australia, so we are in need of investment in this area. “We are urging all candidates in the federal election to present real solutions to this issue.”

Federal Lalor MP Joanne Ryan said “it should be no surprise to anyone locally that the Liberal Party has failed to commit to invest in the west of Melbourne”. After Star Weekly posted the news of the Liberal announcement on Facebook last week, several readers commented that Wyndham’s train stations were in need of more carparks as existing parks often fill up by 7am on weekdays. Amar described the Liberal announcement as a “blatant disregard of the current situation in the west, especially given the huge amount of construction work and new housing projects

that are being implemented all across the Wyndham area”. But the federal Minister for Cities, Urban Infrastructure and Population, Alan Tudge, said that the Liberals had allocated a significant amount of funding to transport projects in Melbourne’s west, including $2 billion for fast rail between Geelong and Melbourne, $5 billion for the Melbourne Airport Rail Link and $200 million towards the widening of the Tullamarine Freeway. “So it beggars belief that the state Labor government has the audacity to complain about a lack of investment, especially when Victoria is also receiving a record $27 billion on road and rail infrastructure funding,” Mr Tudge said.

Theft victim’s cautionary tale By Goya Dmytryshchak A Seabrook woman is calling for secure bike parking at train stations to combat “rampant” theft after having two bikes stolen in the past six months. Cath Stephensen said thieves cut through a metal fence to steal her $3000 bike from Aircraft station at Laverton on April 23. She had bought the Trek Verve+ electric assist, which she named ‘Rosie’, to replace a bike stolen from Williams Landing station last October.

“Rosie was locked to the fence … with a high quality D-lock,” Ms Stephensen said. “The thief cut through the fence railing to get the bike. “The feedback I’m getting through social media is that people are just saying it’s rampant.” Bicycle Network recommends cyclists use two locks or a Parkiteer cage at stations because they are one of the most common places for bike theft. However, even Parkiteer cages are getting broken into with a recent case at Williams Landing station. Last year, there were 114 reported bike

thefts in Hobsons Bay (up from 81 in 2017), 148 in Wyndham (up from 134) and 210 in Maribyrnong (up from 168). Ms Stephensen, who believes reported thefts are the tip of the iceberg, said when she earned enough money to buy a new bike she would take greater precautions. “I will be getting a lock with an inbuilt alarm and I will be getting insurance,” she said. Senior Sergeant Chris Allen said while there had been an increase in bike thefts last year, local intelligence indicated this trend has stabilised in recent months.

Up to $3 million has been pledged for works along the Werribee River, if Labor wins the upcoming federal election. Wyndham council has been forced to clean up rubbish at more than 300 blocks across the municipality since October last year. Wyndham’s environment and sustainability portfolio holder Cr Heather Marcus said if property owners did not comply with a written request from the council to clean up rubbish on their blocks, the council was often forced to step in and clear the rubbish. Cr Marcus said the council would then invoice the property’s owner for the costs involved in the clean-up. “Council has cleaned up rubbish at more than 300 blocks this year, costing property owners anywhere between $165 to $4000 per block,” Cr Marcus said. “No one enjoys living next to a property where rubbish and building materials are dumped, so council is asking owners to consider their neighbours and clean up their blocks. “Council expects property owners to ensure blocks are kept neat and tidy throughout the year.” Cr Marcus said property owners could even save themselves money if they kept blocks mowed and maintained. “The cost is ultimately paid by the owner of the block and could be more than they expected to pay for the clean-up,” she said. “Together we can ensure we keep Wyndham looking neat, tidy and beautiful.” Cr Marcus said the council was happy to work with land owners, to help them comply with Community Amenity Local Laws.

A 35-year-old man from Point Cook and a 30-year-old man from East Kew have been fined for fishing offences. Victorian Fisheries Authority officers caught the men in Crayfish Bay, Cape Otway in September with rock lobster and abalone while the fishing season was closed. Werribee teacher Stephanie Hartnup is dedicated to helping put youth homelessness to bed. Ms Hartnup will be participating in next week’s Sleep at the ’G charity event where 1800 supporters will sleep out at the Melbourne Cricket Ground to raise money and awareness for the cause. Homelessness is a cause Ms Hartnup would like to draw more attention to, which is why she has attended the event every year since its inception seven years ago. “I feel it’s an honour to sleep one night in the cold on a cardboard box, to raise money for the Melbourne City Mission,” she said. “I see homelessness as a significant issue in Melbourne today, in particular youth homelessness. “I personally believe that this issue does not receive enough attention from our government, media and education system, therefore is overlooked by our wider society. “As a teacher myself, I could never imagine one of my students having to sleep rough or couch surf, however I am glad there is an organisation out there like Melbourne City Mission’s Front Yard which specialises in helping homeless youth.” Ms Hartnup said her goal was to raise at least $1200 towards the cause. No sleep for charity champ

Patients are waiting in emergency at Werribee Mercy Hospital four minutes longer than the state average, according to the Victoria’s peak medical body. Latest emergency department performance figures revealed the median wait time for patients to be seen by a doctor or nurse at Werribee Mercy, across all triage categories, was 23 minutes in the past quarter to March. The median time for treatment across the state is 19 minutes. Mercy Health chief of health services Linda Mellors said the performance figures highlighted the growth in demand for services at the hospital. “The Wyndham municipality is experiencing some of the fastest population growth in Australia,” Adjunct Professor Mellors said. “Consequently we have observed up to 20 per cent increases in triage category one to three [most serious] emergency department presentations since last financial year, which is the highest in Victoria,” she said. In addition, ambulance presentations have increased by 35 per cent compared to this quarter last year. Adjunct Professor Mellors said Werribee Mercy Hospital continued to work with Victoria’s Department of Health and Human Services to manage the increased demand. “Staff are to be commended on accommodating this increase in acute patient presentations and ensuring that patients were seen in a reasonable time,” Adjunct Professor Mellors said. “The increased demand from the Wyndham growth corridor means that less serious patients [categories four and five] may have longer waiting times.”

Parks Victoria won’t proceed with a proposal to install toilets within the Point Cook Homestead Precinct stables. Architects last year completed a heritage impact statement into the proposal to install toilets in the stable building as “free-standing structures that require no fixing to the existing building fabric”. However, Parks Victoria western region district manager Craig Bray said public feedback on the proposal revealed that installing toilets in the stables “was not what the community wanted”. Mr Bray said that plans to install new toilets at the homestead precinct were part of a works program designed to support a future expression of interest process for potential community or commercial groups leasing the site. He said that since the stables proposal was rejected, the design and location of toilets at the precinct were still to be determined. “Importantly, prior to any decisions regarding design and location of the toilets, Parks Victoria will consult with the community – this will assist in guiding the decisions,” he said. “Planning is under way for maintenance works at the precinct later this year, including the installation of a new sewer connection, tree risk mitigation works, and maintenance across the buildings and grounds.” Alesha Capone

The race is on in Lalor as candidates gear up for next week’s federal election. Wyndham residents have a field of six candidates to choose from on May 18. In the order that they appear on the ballot paper, Susan Jakobi is in for the Australia First Party, Gayle Murphy for Liberal and incumbent Labor party member Joanne Ryan. Jeffrey Robinson will run for the United Australia Party, Jay Dessi for The Greens and Aijaz Moinuddin for the United People’s Party. The seat covers 493 square kilometres on the south-western edge of Melbourne taking in parts of Wyndham and includes Werribee, Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit, Truganina and parts of Point Cook. Lalor, considered a safe Labor seat, fell once to the Liberal Party with Harold Holt at the 1966 election. The Liberal Party’s pre-selected candidate for Lalor, 22-year-old Werribee resident Kate Oski, resigned ahead of the election because she may be able to claim Polish citizenship through her father. Since 2017, several Australian politicians have been referred to court, resigned or been forced to run for re-election after it emerged they could be ineligible to hold their positions due to section 44 of the constitution, which forbids MPs from having allegiance to a foreign power, especially citizenship. While some people read or head to the gym in their spare time, Christian Peric’s favourite pastime is skydiving out of planes miles above the earth. The Point Cook man, 48, is one of three Victorian mentors with Aussie Bigways, a volunteer-run organisation for skydivers who like doing large freefall formations (skydiving in a group formation). Later this month, Mr Peric will head overseas to Perris Valley, California, where 150 Australian skydivers are aiming to participate in a single large formation skydive together. If they succeed, it will set the record for the biggest-ever single Australian large formation skydive. Mr Peric said the current national record stood at 119 people skydiving in formation, an effort which he was “lucky enough” to participate in during May 2015. Mr Peric said his interest in skydiving developed when he was a child, as both his father and uncle were defence-force paratroopers. As a youngster, he also lived near an airport and would often see people parachute. “What I enjoy about skydiving is the camaraderie, the spirit of the people,” he said. “You’re flying and it’s like nothing on earth.” Mr Peric said the upcoming record attempt would include skydivers aged from 18 to 70, many whom have spent the past four years in training. “It ends up being eight airplanes that we will jump out of,” he said. “People from all walks of life will come together to perform that one and a half minutes of magic.” See http://www.aussiebigways.com for details.

Remembering the fallen By Alesha Capone A new memorial honouring 60 soldiers from Wyndham who died during World War I has been unveiled in Werribee. Members of the Werribee RSL sub-branch, state and federal MPs, residents and Wyndham councillors gathered for the unveiling ceremony on Friday. The memorial was installed near the intersection of the Princes Highway and Cherry Street – marking the beginning of Werribee’s 1918 Avenue of Honour. The state government contributed $184,000 to help build the memorial which uses bluestone blocks stacked together to form two walls shaped like a poppy. The centre of the monument features a granite structure with the Australian Rising Sun badge and the Sword of Sacrifice. Werribee MP Tim Pallas said that during WWI, Werribee was a “much smaller community” than it is nowadays, and the loss of 60 lives would have devastated the area. “The contributions made by our brave veterans will never be forgotten and this memorial provides current and future generations with a space to reflect and pay their respect,” he said. Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw said the memorial would be “a wonderful legacy” for Wyndham. Werribee RSL sub-branch president, Daryl Ryan, thanked the sub-branch’s vice president David ‘Paddy’ McDiarmid and member Lyle Raison for their contributions to the memorial project. Mr McDiarmid said that he would also like to thank David Manibod, projects engineer at VicRoads, for his assistance in putting the memorial together.

Youth arrests over robberies Police have arrested several youths in relation to a robbery and armed robbery in Williams Landing last month. Four teenagers were arrested on Saturday, May 4, after officers from the North West Metro Regional Crime Squad and detectives from the Wyndham Crime Investigation Unit executed four search warrants in Werribee and Truganina and two in Point Cook. The warrants related to a robbery on April 20, just after 9pm, in Coleridge Circuit, Williams Landing. The 18-year-old victim had his credit card stolen and sustained minor injuries. The second incident, an armed robbery, occurred the following day at a Williams Landing reserve about 10pm. The victim, a 17-year-old Truganina male, sustained minor injuries and had cash stolen. As a result of the warrants, a 15-year-old Werribee boy was charged with obtaining property by deception and handling stolen goods. He was bailed to appear in court at a later date. A 15-year-old Point Cook boy was released pending inquiries. A 16-year-old Point Cook boy has had his bail revoked and was remanded. A 15-year-old Truganina boy has been charged with armed robbery, robbery and false imprisonment and remanded to appear before a children’s court at a later date. Traffic ‘cripples’ Ballan Road By Esther Lauaki Concerns over congestion around Wyndham Vale’s newest school have prompted renewed calls to duplicate Ballan Road. Wyndham Christian College, near the Wyndham Vale Christian Centre on Ballan Road, opened for prep to grade 4 pupils in term one of this year. The college, a sister school to Heatherton Christian College in Melbourne’s south-east, is still under construction with a new grade level, up to year 12, to be added each year.

The next stage of construction on the $3 million project will begin in six weeks and includes six new classrooms and administration spaces to eventually accommodate 1450 students within the next eight years. But nearby residents last week raised concerns that the expansion could worsen congestion which is already an issue along Ballan Road. “Horrible location if you’re not planning any new access roads,” one resident wrote on Facebook. “Ballan Road is stuffed as it is and now this will cripple it.”

Another resident said traffic was “getting worse every year” and the school would contribute to the congestion already caused by Manor Lakes Central shopping centre. College spokesman Rob Ward said it was “a roads issue, not an issue with the school’s location”. “We haven’t added a single car to the roads … nor to the congestion that already exists.” Mr Ward said. “They are all local people who drive past the school every day. “The impact of extra traffic from the school is only at drop-off and pick-up times.”

Mr Ward said the school’s master plan includes an access road to Wollahra Rise but the issue is the need to fully duplicate Ballan Road. “With over 12,000 people moving into Wyndham every year and a huge new shopping centre under construction across the road, we believe we should all be lobbying government at all levels to invest in the west, including duplicating Ballan Road.” “Regrettably we have been advised by our local MP that there are no funds available to spend on Ballan Road.”

A study in fresh flavours Students are focusing on freshness and healthier food choices at Point Cook Senior Secondary College. Canteen manager Debra McCulloch said students at the VCE campus enjoyed healthy options on the lunch menu. “We prepare three different meals each day … anything from roasted chicken to bolognaise or caesar salad to go with a selection of salads, fruit and sandwiches,” Ms McCulloch said. “The students love it … a lot of the kids are playing sports and they don’t want to feed their bodies with bad food.” She said chicken was always a winner with the hungry teens. “Anything with chicken in it, they love,” Ms McCulloch said. “We try and keep things very healthy so hot food is mostly done in the oven and nothing is deep fried.”

All Wyndham schools are being encouraged to join a state competition to find Victoria’s healthiest school canteen. Entries are open for the Capture Your Canteen photo competition run by the state Healthy Eating Advisory Service. Schools that enter will be in the running for $500 to go towards promoting healthy eating. Dietitian and Capture Your Canteen manager Margaret Rozman said the competition was a fun way to recognise and celebrate canteens and the hard-working people who keep them running. “Many schools are doing a fantastic job to promote healthy options and to make healthy eating an enjoyable part of every day for kids and teens,” Ms Rozman said. Call for more tourism funding By Alesha Capone Wyndham council has called for a “fair go” for tourism funding. The Wyndham Business and Tourism Association (WBTA) has thrown its support behind the council’s stance, which was included in the community engagement report for the council’s 2019-20 draft budget. The report stated: “Wyndham’s tourism industry generates almost $490 million per year, yet we are unable to access important tourism funding from the Victorian government.”

The council’s economy, innovation and liveability director Peter McKinnon said funding for the state government’s tourism marketing programs focused on the Melbourne CBD and regional areas “with no reference to the visitor experiences available in suburban destinations such as Wyndham”.

Mr McKinnon said the council would also welcome more funding from the state government for the $86 million Werribee Open Range Zoo master plan, the Werribee National Equestrian Centre’s soon-to-befinalised master plan and “better signage” on the Princes Freeway. Head of the WBTA’s tourism subcommittee, Nicole Tehan, said Wyndham was unable to apply for regional funding grants due to being classified as part of “Metropolitan Melbourne” – which includes 17 municipalities – by Visit Victoria.

“Wyndham’s visitor economy is positioned to grow at a significant rate in the short to medium term,” Ms Tehan said. “We encourage the state government to invest in Wyndham’s tourism product and supporting infrastructure to ensure economic return, the generation of new employment opportunities and high-quality experiences for all those who visit this fantastic region.” A state government spokesperson said: “The government is proud to support events and attractions in Wyndham through a range of different agencies and programs”.

Swimmer’s silver lining Swimming champ Tara Gallop knows hard work pays off. The Hoppers Crossing 16 year-old came away with a silver in the 1500 metre freestyle event at the recent Hancock Prospecting Age Swimming Championships in Adelaide. Her finish times earned her a top five ranking in Australia for her age group in the 1500 metre and 800 metre freestyle events. “I’m excited because of the hard work I put in to achieve this result,” Tara said. “I’ve been swimming for six years at Hoppers Crossing Swimming Club. “I would like to achieve as much as I possibly can and go as far as I possibly can.” Coach Ken Warren said he was proud of Tara’s performance. “She did very well to place second in the 1500 metres and fourth in the 800 metres. “The idea is to get them to swim as best they can and help them to achieve their goals.”

Wyndham’s hot housing figures By Alesha Capone The 3029 and 3030 postcodes remain popular with first-home buyers, according to State Revenue Office figures. The office has released the number of first-home buyer grant applications it received between January and March this year. Within the 3029 postcode, which takes in Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit and Truganina, there were 207 applications received (compared to 191 in January-March last year). In the 3030 postcode, which includes

Werribee, Point Cook, Quandong and Derrimut, there were 161 applications (compared to 152). The 3029 postcode placed third-highest in the state for first-home buyer grant applications in the first three months of this year, with 3030 placing fourth. The 3064 postcode (Craigieburn, Donnybrook, Kalkallo, Mickleham and Roxburgh Park) topped the state with 278 first-home buyer grant applications. Since 2013, eligible Victorians have been able to claim a first-home owner grant of $10,000

from the state government to purchase new homes valued up to $750,000. Real Estate Institute of Victoria chief executive Gil King said Werribee’s median house price grew 1.4 per cent between March last year and March this year. “All Wyndham suburbs have a median house price of between $500,000 and $665,000, which is affordable for families and first-home buyers and the area will continue to be popular for this buyer group into the future,” he said. “Werribee was one of just 14 Melbourne suburbs to record at least 30 sales in the last

four quarters and experience positive median house price growth during the 12 months to 30 March, 2019, which shows that this area is doing particularly well. “Point Cook recorded the second highest number of sales in the March, 2019, quarter, with 104 properties changing hands according to REIV records. “This shows that the local market continues to be active with new residents coming into the area.” – Melissa Heagney/ Heagney/Domain

Great strides for autism Mum on a mission, Jessie Smart, wants to help others understand autism better. The Hoppers Crossing mother of two sons takes every opportunity to educate people on the developmental disorder and earlier this year raised $14,000 for Autism Spectrum Australia as part of Walk to Autism month. “My oldest son Liam is five but he was diagnosed at three and a half,” Ms Smart said. “We navigated all the services and information available to us and some were helpful but it was difficult for us to understand.” Ms Smart and her family, husband Kevin, Liam and four-year-old Zac, walked at least 20,000 steps a day for eight days for the fundraiser which wrapped up last month. “I’ve got two small boys, so I would clock up 20,000 steps in one day just chasing after them,” she said. “We all go out for walks, we’re always out and about.”

Her aim is to change perceptions of autism. “There’s a lot of stigma attached to it and it is difficult for us to accept,” Ms Smart said. “Autism is only a small aspect of what makes up my kid … he might miss a few social cues. “Liam is very funny, he likes his numbers. He will repeat sports scores, who scored the goal, what team. “He’s big into sports. “He never wants anyone to miss out and … he follows the beat of his own drum.” Esther Lauaki

Truganina logistics hub on way By Alesha Capone A $50 million logistics hub is set to be constructed in Truganina. Transport company Secon Freight Logistics will build the hub and will lease an adjacent logistics warehouse building from Berton Investments, which is based at the Truwest Industrial Estate on Dohertys Road. The logistics hub will be partially owned by Secon and partially retained by Berton under a long-term lease with Secon.

Property and supply chain business TM Insight will design and deliver the new facility, which will measure 21,000 square metres. The development will feature areas of heavy-duty container pavement, head office, separate warehouses to accommodate contract logistics and cross-docking operations and workshop areas for equipment repair and maintenance. Secon chief executive Steve Nailer said the company had secured approval to use super-B and A-double HPFV vehicles at the site.

No brake on siblings Seabrook siblings Brodie and Madison Kerss are in the fast lane to the top in speedway sidecar racing. Brother and sister competed at the recent Australian Senior and Junior Speedway Sidecar Championships in north Queensland and both came home with top 10 national placings for their age groups. Brodie, 16, and teammate Conner Curran finished second in a field of nine in the junior section. Madison, 13, and teammate Lucas Quinn finished seventh in their first year of racing. “I’m absolutely rapt with the result,” Brodie said. “It was a massive effort. “It took intense training, mental and physical, weights and endurance training as well as heaps of hours behind the handlebars and swinging on the side of the bike.” Madison has ambitious dreams of making it to the very top of the male-dominated sport.

TM Insight property director Nathan Bingham said the Truganina logistics centre would be “a landmark operation in the centre of Australia’s fastest growing industrial market”. “Additionally, Truganina was selected as the preferred location for this development due to the proximity to Secon’s current and future customers and the area’s investment in road infrastructure,” he said. MY WYNDHAM After 63 years, Paul Marinis says he almost feels like a local in Werribee South. The loyal Werribee Football Club supporter talks to Esther Lauaki.

Football. Werribee Football Club. Tell us about your involvement with the Werribee Football Club. I used to always go to games as a kid. When we were going to school I used to go and watch my cousins play footy. Before Werribee Football Club was formed, there was a team from the Werribee South farmers but they didn’t have a home ground – they’d play in a paddock. But later they found a home at Chirnside Park and formed the Werribee Football Club in 1965. I joined up in 1991 and have been a member since. I joined as a Golden Tiger, then became a White Tiger and now I’m a Gold Label member – I love the club. What’s something people would be surprised to know about you?

There’s nothing to be surprised about. I worked hard for much of my life and now I run around picking up my grandkids.

What’s your connection to Werribee? My dad and his brother moved to Werribee South from Greece in 1955, a year before the rest of our family came. How long have you lived in the area? Just 63 years in Werribee South. We moved to

Hoppers Crossing for about 10 years but we came back. What was Werribee like when you first moved here? Times were tough, not just for us, for everybody in Greece where I’m from. They’d just come out of a war and there was a recession before that

so people left Greece to find a better life. When we moved to Werribee a loaf of bread was 20 cents and there were no roads, just farms. We had vegetable farms growing up, I was five years old, and I went to school. I was farming for 45 years, 10 years with my father running Con Marinis and Sons, until he retired. What are you passionate about?

What do you love about Werribee? I just love the area. When we first came here, Werribee was just a spot on the map and there would have been five or 10,000 people here. There was only one tractor in the area and three cars. They still used horse and cart. Watton Street (or Geelong Road back then) was empty, only one car would pass every hour. But ever since then, there’s been a lot of changes and that’s progress. What would you like to see improved? The infrastructure needs to be improved.

Dr. Ken Coghill, the ALP candidate, won the seat of Werribee on Saturday by a runaway margin to become the electorate’s first Labor representative. He won 14 out of 19 polling booths to end up with an outright majority over his Liberal and Independent Democrat opponents, without the need for distribution of preferences.

Werribee could get a new cost-free cemetery on an industrial waste site near the Avalon Airport if the Werribee Council accepts a suggestion of the Victorian Health Department. The site would be expected to cater for both Werribee and the North Geelong districts.

Wyndham council has been attacked for its “unco-operative” attitude towards helping the Department of Human Services to establish a $6 million health centre in Wyndham. The claim was made by the State Labor MP for Werribee, Ms Mary Killett, who with the Mayor of Wyndham, Councillor Frank Purcell, spoke to the Banner last week about the city’s growing battle with illicit drugs, in the hope of increasing the public’s awareness.

Despite their tender years, Jayke Hammer, Jake Harry and brothers Brodie and Nicholas Reynolds are heroes. The four mates have been recognised for their efforts in rescuing six people from a horrific single-car collision last year.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir reconsiders a local favourite A regular sight that bemuses us when we’re seeking a feed in Flemington is people queuing up for a table at Laksa King. Good luck to them, but the CTS ethos usually leads us to going where the crowds aren’t. In Flemington and for Malaysian, that invariably means M Yong Tufu, but we are happy and keen to check out the new Laksa King family establishment – Laksa King Kitchen on Racecourse Road. The new Laksa King Kitchen boasts a chic-but-small dining area, though there is more seating upstairs. The staff are keen, happy and all a-bustle. The menu is a solid gathering of Malaysian staples divided into small/big bites, noodles, rice dishes, laksas and vegetarian. There is a nifty twist – laksas are offered in two sizes. This makes good sense, as regular laksas are always a big meal. Not that we can envisage a day when we would order the smaller size! Selections can be ascertained using the printed menu or on the laptop at each table, but the actual ordering is done via the latter. Bennie and I share a starter and have a bigger dish each. Lobak ($8.60) is less on flavour and crinkly beancurd than we would like, but it’s a fine beginning that delivers us three porky chunks. In a fine break with boring CTS practice, it is Bennie who orders a laksa – in this case, the bigger version of the angus beef outing ($13.50). It’s a big and handsome bowl-full but he is

He does give, however, an enthusiastic 10/10 for the many tender beef chunks. And I get to try one of the eggplant pieces – it is wonderfully luscious and memorable. But still … That leaves me ordering the Hainan chicken rice ($13.50). The photos of the dish didn’t really inspire and that unease increases when I realise my rice meal will be eaten without the usual bowl of chicken soup on the side. But all is forgiven from the first mouthful of perfectly ginger-perfumed rice and onwards. This is a triumph and one of the best of this personal favourite I’ve had for a long time. There’s a lot of chook and it’s tender and expertly boned. The ginger mash, chilli sauce and soy accompaniments are excellent and in generous quantities and the wilted bean sprout/veg offering is likewise top notch. SPORT Centurions put shaky start behind them Werribee Centrals have hit back after a slow start to the Geelong and District Football League Smiths Holden Cup season. There was a bit of uncertainty surrounding the Centurions after back-to-back losses to open the season, but they have won their past two matches to get back on track. The Centurions had a commanding 38-point win over Belmont Lions at Winter Reserve on Saturday. Centurions coach Nick Smith admits the season start was less than ideal. “No one likes to start 0-2,” he said. “It makes the whole pre-season and preparation phase feel a bit shaky. We’re happy to string a couple of wins together. It certainly changes the feeling around the place.” Leading by 12 points at half-time, Werribee Centrals turned up the heat with

a five-goal-to-nil third quarter to open up a 49-point lead by three-quarter time. Young small forward Daniel Skinner, half-back flanker Jackson Smith and onballer Daryl Chesterman led the way for the Centurions with three goals each. Smith and Chesterman showed the forwards how to get it done around goals. The Centurions should have been further in front – a return of 5.8 from 13 scoring shots left a lot to be desired. “It’s funny – the forwards didn’t finish off as much as we would’ve liked, but the midfielders got it done,” Smith said. “I think both ‘Jacko’ and ‘Chesty’ kicked three straight, whereas a lot of the forwards contributed to those 22 behinds. “There’ll be a bit of goalkicking practice this week.”

The onball unit of Chesterman, Brad Carlton and Matthew Miller set the tone for Werribee Centrals. Daniel Boyd was crafty across half-forward, finishing with two goals, while Ben Leonard also jagged two. Werribee Centrals will face East Geelong in a clash of two 2-2 sides at Richmond Crescent on Saturday. The seventh-placed Centurions are in form and ready to close the gap on the leading sides. “It’s a good time to have a game like this because we’ve got some confidence,” Smith said. Point Cook is on song By Lance Jenkinson Point Cook is on the winners’ list in the Western Region Football League division 1 for the first time in its history. The newly-promoted Bulldogs powered to a famous 37-point win over cellar dweller Albion on the road at JR Parsons Reserve on Saturday. Bulldogs coach Ian Denny said the breakthrough top-flight win was a landmark for the club. “The players sung the song with as much enthusiasm as when we won the grand final,” he said. “I know Albion is sort of in a world of pain at the moment, but we’re trying to push up and they’re trying to hang on, so we’ll take any win we can get at this point.” After a competitive opening quarter, Point Cook began to take control from the second quarter onwards. The Bulldogs opened up a 21-point lead at half-time and were comfortably in front thereafter. Denny praised Albion, which had lost its previous three games by an average of 194 points, for tactics that made it tough for his side. “It was tough and they made it in-close … full credit to them,” he said. “It wasn’t a pretty game to watch, but as long as we came away with the win, I didn’t really care.” Point Cook had shown flashes of its potential in the early stage of the season without securing a win. “Good efforts and good quarters, which is what we’ve been playing at times, are good, but it’s always better to win,” he said. Point Cook was promoted with a fairly young team in tow. Two of the Bulldog pups, Mason Taylor and Kane Ryan, thrived in the victory. Taylor used his skills to good effect on a wing, while Ryan was lively across wing and half-forward. Denny believes the game turned in favour of Point Cook on the back of a purple patch from Alex Grigg. In one act, Grigg took a courageous pack mark, while in another, he broke the pack open with brute strength. “Those sort of things change the game,” Denny said. Daniel Bunworth’s on-field leadership at Point Cook has been profound. Bunworth was a smart pick-up by the Bulldogs because of his experience as player-coach of Wyndhamvale, a side that was in a relegation battle in recent seasons before going down last season. “He’s been fantastic for us,” Denny said. “I think he’s enjoying not being the coach and just playing footy.”

Aker Ali led the way in the forward line for Point Cook with three goals. Point Cook could get a harsh dose of reality when it faces Altona this Saturday at Saltwater Reserve. Altona disposed of six-time defending champion Deer Park by 68 points last weekend. Elsewhere in division 1, Werribee Districts held off a fast-finishing St Albans to win by 18 points at Kings Park Reserve.

Falcons switch it up to hold winning run City West Falcons are proving there is more than one way to skin a cat in the Victorian Netball League championship division. Despite the disruption to the starting line-up caused by the beginning of the Australian Netball League competition, which involves a number of their stars stepping up to the next level, the Falcons just keep on winning. The Falcons remain the hottest team in the competition, improving to 6-0 and a game clear on top with a comfortable 65-49 win over the Southern Saints at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Wednesday night. Falcons coach Marg Lind has thrown her line-ups around with good effect. “Sometimes right up to the death knock, we don’t know who we’ve got playing,” she said. “They [ANL teams] dictate to you how much load the players can take.” Star goal shooter Jane Cook is unavailable for City West indefinitely as she continues her stint with Tasmania in the ANL. It has opened up a spot for Tharjini Sivalingam, who impressed with 62-from-65 attempts for a return of 96 per cent. Centre Molly Jovic’s connection to the Collingwood Magpies put her on a minute’s restriction against the Saints, so she was taken out of the game in the second half. Soli Ropati switched from wing defence to centre to cover Jovic and not only filled her shoes admirably, but had a huge influence in City West turning a one-goal half-time lead into a 16-goal battering. “Soli just played at a different pace, which is what they weren’t prepared for,” Lind said. Anger Akec performed strongly at wing defence when Ropati moved to centre, while Imogen Sexton relished her time in defence. It has been a long road to the VNL’s top flight for Sexton, who endured two ACL injuries in back-to-back seasons. Falcons flying thanks to hard work and dedication Wyndhamvale is setting the standard both on and off the field in the Western Region Football League division 2. First-year Falcons coach Chris Moreland has been impressed with his players commitment from the first day he set foot in the club. Moreland is adamant the professionalism shown by the Falcons players in team preparation and post-game recovery is what is leading to impressive results on the field. The undefeated Falcons are a game and a hefty wad of percentage clear of the rest of the field and so far the team to beat. “I’ve brought a GFL [Geelong Football League] standard into the club,” Moreland said. “The GFL has been rated No. 1 league for a number of years now and I’ve brought my standards from there and it’s what I expect.” More importantly, the Wyndhamvale players have bought into the blueprint set out by Moreland. There have been no fractures in the group so

far when it comes to meeting Moreland’s lofty expectations. “When I first got there, when I signed in the pre-season, there was 60 guys on the track and I thought numbers might drop off a bit, but they haven’t really dropped off,” Moreland said.

“They’re a really tight bunch and I could see that when I came down to watch them last year.” Relegated from division 1 last year, Wyndhamvale set about bringing a positive vibe back to the club. A perfect 4-0 start to 2019 is just what the doctor ordered. Wyndhamvale trounced Parkside on the road at Henry Turner Reserve by 81 points on Saturday. The Falcons registered 34 scoring shots to 13 in a dominant display. “We wanted to get that winning culture back to Wyndhamvale and try and get all the supporters back, so it’s been good,” Moreland said. The foundations of Wyndhamvale’s early season success can be found in its defence as no team has scored over 50 points against the miserly Falcons this season. Double trouble for Devils By Lance Jenkinson Werribee Devils have been hard done by when it comes to Big V basketball men’s state championship fixturing. The Devils barely got to celebrate their second win of the campaign on Saturday night when they had another clash just 17 hours later. Double header weekends are a fact of life for state championship teams, but the Devils seem to be the team hit hardest by the short turnarounds. Devils coach Warren Estcourt said his side went into Sunday’s game against McKinnon Cougars fatigued. The Devils were no match for the league-leading team, losing 107-79 at the Glen Eira Sports and Aquatic Centre. “We’ve had four double headers already and we’ve got seven this year, which is the most in the league,” Estcourt said. “In six of those double headers, the team we play on the Sunday doesn’t play the night before, so that puts us up against the wall to start with. “McKinnon didn’t play last night and today was our fourth game in nine days, so it was always going to be a tough ask.” It took a little bit of the gloss off Werribee’s thrilling 93-91 victory over the Chelsea Gulls at Eagle Stadium on Saturday night. “It was a bit of relief to get the win,” Estcourt said. “It was our first home win, so it was like what do we do now, ‘ahh that’s right, go and thank the crowd’.” The Devils led for most of the way, but the Gulls had a shot with four seconds on the clock that could have taken the game to overtime. “We played well and deserved the win,” Estcourt said. Werribee has been a slowburn this season as Estcourt tries to find the winning combinations. The Devils coach is working with a largely new crop of players with only three returning from last season. “It was always going to be a very tough situation when you’ve got nine guys to integrate into the program,” he said. “We’ve changed our rotations a bit in the last three weeks, which I think has helped. “We’ve got a little bit smaller, a little bit quicker and that’s certainly paid dividends.” Werribee’s schedule will settle down over the next month. The Devils have no more double headers until the middle of July and have their next two games at home. Estcourt believes the next four games, starting with Blackburn Vikings at Eagle Stadium on Sunday, are there for the taking. “If we can win these next four games, we’d be up to six wins and right back in the mix,” he said. “They’re all winnable.” 50 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 8, 2019

A fast start was the basis to Werribee Centrals’ 65-39 win over Belmont in the GDFL Netball at Winter Reserve on Saturday. The Centrals led by 14 goals in the first quarter and were never seriously threatened. Ellie Tubbs led the way in the circle with 48 goals.

Westbourne Grammarians sang the club song for the first time this season in the Victorian Amateur Football Association division 3. The Warriors enjoyed a double-your-score 52-point win over Parkside away at Pitcher Park on Saturday. Ali Eqbal was superb for the Warriors, kicking five goals.

Estcourt has been impressed with Werribee’s imports this season. Konor Kulas was a familiar face, returning to the team after a successful first season as import last winter. David Shepard has been a revelation, leading the league in scoring with 26.6 points per game. It is the all-round package that Kulas and Shepard provide the Devils that has Estcourt most impressed. “They work really hard during the week, they

go to the gym every day, they shoot around every day, they stretch, they eat well, they work out a lot. “They’re just very professional.” Jacob Formosa is the pick of the locals so far as he has averaged 15.6 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game. Recruits Darcy Daniels and Livai Smith, both from Melbourne Tigers, have fitted into the Devils line-up seamlessly, while Kristian Zjak entered the starting line-up at the weekend.

The Triton has carried the weight of Mitsubishi light truck expectations for more than 40 years, and with the model year ’19 range, there’s no sign of them being offloaded any time soon.
