Home invasions decline By Alesha Capone The number of home invasions recorded in the west has fallen by about a third within 12 months, as Victoria Police “relentlessly” hunt down offenders who commit the crimes. In December 2016, the state government made home invasions a specific offence under the Crimes Act, defined as when a person, in the company of others, commits a burglary while armed or while there is a person in the house. According to the state’s Crime Statistics

Agency, there were 91 home invasions in the west reported to police between December 2016 and September 2017, including 38 in Brimbank, 23 in Melton, 20 in Wyndham and 11 in Maribyrnong (there were none reported in Hobsons Bay). In comparison, between October 2017 and September last year, there were 61 home invasions recorded in the west – 27 in Brimbank, 21 in Melton, nine in Wyndham, two in Maribyrnong and two in Hobsons Bay. Between October 2017 and September last year, Brimbank and Melton recorded the

highest and second-highest amount of home invasions out of all Victoria’s municipalities. Wyndham recorded the equal fifth-highest amount of home invasions, along with Hume and Greater Dandenong, with each municipality experiencing nine home invasions across the 12 months. Acting Superintendent Adrian Healy said it was “pleasing” to see a decrease in the number of home invasions but “any incident is one too many”. “The emotional toll this type of offending has on victims is enormous,” he said.

Weerama out of council favour By Charlene Macaulay Wyndham council has lost faith in the Weerama festival, arguing that “the momentum of the event has been lost” and that it needs “a professional event organiser”. According to the minutes of a meeting of the council’s tourism and major events committee, Weerama needs refreshing. “The challenge is the momentum of the event has been lost … [it is] recommended council has ‘one last attempt’ to refresh the Weerama brand, change governance and to

modernise offering,” the minutes read. “If this is not successful, then guidance is to work on developing a new replacement signature event for March each year.” But Wyndham council corporate affairs manager Emily Keogh stressed that the committee was not a decision-making body and the minutes of its last meeting reflected “only a discussion in relation to Weerama”. The February 14 meeting occurred after the Weerama committee cancelled this year’s event due to time constraints and a lack of funding.

Festival organiser Marcel Mahfoud said he was “blindsided” by the report and would have liked for the Weerama committee to have been invited to the meeting. “We’ve had limited resources to deliver this festival, extremely limited, with safety costs going through the roof and new expenses Weerama hasn’t had in previous years,” he said. “What is really positive is that they’ve acknowledged that Weerama is Wyndham’s signature event.” Mr Mahfoud said the Weerama committee included people with extensive experience in

event management. The festival is expected to return on March 15, 2020. The report continues the tumultuous relationship between the festival committee and the council. The festival was cancelled in 2015 when the council refused grant money to fix committee governance issues. In 2017, festival organisers spent the week before the event scrambling to get permits in place after the council turned down a request to cover the costs of traffic management and rubbish collection for the festival.

Tamara Joy says she’s only now learning of the full extent of the cheating scandal between her “husband” Dan Webb and fellow Married at First Sight contestant Jessika Power as episodes detailing the affair go to air on the high-rating Channel Nine show. “I’m watching all of this unfold like you guys,” she said. “For me, it’s so confronting and quite shocking to see. “I did have wind of what was going on … [but] I had no idea to the extent and to the level that it was happening.” The 30-year-old said she signed on to do the show because she was sick of Tinder hook-up culture and wanted to find a real connection with someone, but admitted that her wedding day was not all it was cracked up to be. “When it’s your wedding day you kind of want it to be about fun, love, happiness – you want to feel all the feels,” she said. “I definitely wasn’t feeling anything apart from excited to get the show on the road.” She said doing the show was “unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before” and that “you forget the cameras are there” during filming. Ms Joy, who went to Cambridge Primary School and Werribee Secondary College, said she used to hang out along the Werribee River and at skate parks with her twin brother when she was younger. She now works in administration for Lendlease. She said she used an Airbnb property during her homestay for the show because the house she shared with her father was being renovated at the time and wasn’t appropriate for filming.

Wyndham Vale and Tarneit train stations will be out of action in the week leading up to Easter with a six-day shut-down of the Geelong line. Buses will replace all Regional Rail Link trains between Southern Cross and Geelong, South Geelong, Marshall and Waurn Ponds stations from April 16-21. The shutdown is part of an autumn construction blitz across the metropolitan and regional train networks to build the Metro Tunnel, remove dangerous level crossings and upgrade regional lines. It has been timed to coincide with the April school holiday period “to cause the least impact on people’s travel”, according to the Public Transport Victoria website. Commuters can expect travel times to increase by up to 45 minutes. PTV called on commuters to plan ahead and allow more time to get to their destination over the six-day shut-down. “Avoid the peak if you can and consider alternatives where possible. Expect your normal services to be busier than usual during this time. “There will be more people using roads or different public transport lines if their usual journey is disrupted.” Wyndham commuters can catch buses home from the Southern Cross Station coach terminal located on Spencer Street, opposite Little Bourke Street. raffic congestion, mountains of rubbish and a lack of carparking pale into insignificance when compared to the senseless tragedy in Christchurch. New Zealand has always felt like a younger sibling that you love to tease and chiack with, but deep down you really love. The overwhelming sadness that has gripped our country is testament to the relationship we have with the Kiwis that has been forged over decades. Unfortunately, the outpouring of emotion has been diluted by individuals and groups using it as a platform for personal agendas and messaging filled with hate. Anger does lead to confusion and irrational thinking, but while anger is understandable, the keyboard vigilantes are of no use to anyone. Our political leaders have handled the situation as well as can be expected and have not tried to make political mileage out of it. Some politicians have disgraced themselves and will be dealt with accordingly by the electorate and history.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has been breathtakingly inspirational. In an era in which many politicians spend too much time being politicians and bureaucrats, along comes someone who is real. She has never read from the puppet makerâ€™s handbook or subscribed to the sound-bite, click-bait manual of dealing with people, issues and problems. There is no how-to guide for dealing with situations such as Christchurch. A cliche-riddled, wannabe leader would have been found out. New Zealand voters got it right. They have a leader who not only rises above the petty political agenda and butts heads with the worldâ€™s super powers but is also able to lead in a time of crisis with strength and compassion. I hope we can find someone similar to lead our country in the future. The recurring question from this, and other equally tragic events of recent times, is: When will it stop? I donâ€™t know, but I do know the hate and revenge-filled social media explosion that followed is not in any way productive or helpful in answering â– that question. â–

Homicide Squad detectives have charged a 29-year-old Irish national with one count of attempted murder after a 53-year-old man was shot in Point Cook on February 21. The Irish man was arrested at a Melbourne airport on March 10. Fighting spirit kicks in By Alesha Capone Tarneit man Andrew Collicoat, who will participate in his first-ever MMA cage fight at the weekend, says he hopes to inspire others. At age 13, Mr Collicoat was diagnosed with transverse myelitis, an inflammation of a spinal cord section, which damages insulating material covering nerve cell fibres and interrupts messages which the nerves send through the body. Mr Collicoat said doctors told him he might never walk again. He spent four years seeing a physiotherapist almost daily and was able to walk unaided, but to this day he has no movement in one ankle and restricted movement in other parts of his body. Mr Collicoat said this did not stop him when he decided to “get fit” some years ago. He joined the Resilience Training Centre in Footscray and lost 30 kilograms doing crossfit. He also took up Brazilian jiu-jitsu and has won his division at the Pan Pacific Jiu-Jitsu Championships for the past three years. Success he says he could not have achieved without the staff at Resilience Training Centre, particularly his coach, Olympian and professional UFC fighter Daniel Kelly. Mr Collicoat said when he decided to enter the Wimp 2 Warrior Challenge at the centre last year, Mr Kelly was supportive. Wimp 2 Warrior, a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) program, involves six months of intensive training. At the program’s end, participants take part in an MMA cage fight. Mr Collicoat, who works in Sunshine, said he hoped his journey would inspire others, including those with a disability, to take on new challenges.

New plan to put brakes on speedsters Speed humps will be installed on a Point Cook road after a petition signed by 26 residents called on Wyndham council to take action. The council has agreed to install speed humps along Grassbird Drive, between Sunnybank Drive and Boardwalk Boulevard, after investigations found about 20 per cent of drivers were flouting the road’s 50km/h speed limit. Traffic counters found that, on average, 200 of the 900 vehicles using Grassbird Drive each day were travelling above 55km/h. The project will cost $8000. Cr Aaron An said many children crossed Grassbird Drive to get to nearby schools and parks, including Point Cook P-9 College and Featherbrook Park. He said the speed humps would help slow down drivers and make it safer for pedestrians. “I’m concerned that 200 vehicles each day are considered as speeding … something needs to be done,” he said. According to a council report, Grassbird Drive will be extended in the future from Boardwalk Boulevard to Prudence Parade, which would turn the low-traffic road to “one of the most important east-west connector roads in the Point Cook South area”. Court a case of ‘embarrassing’ By Alesha Capone A Wyndham councillor has labelled Werribee Magistrates Court as “draconian” and “embarrassing”. Wyndham safer communities portfolio holder Kim McAliney posted a statement on Facebook earlier this month in which she said Wyndham needed a new justice precinct, including a new police station and Magistrates Court. A new justice precinct in East Werribee has been talked about for a number of years.

In 2014, the state government allocated three hectares of land, directly behind Werribee police station, for a potential justice precinct. Earlier this year, Wyndham council made a pre-budget submission to the state government’s 2019-20 budget, asking for funding to be allocated to develop the justice precinct. The submission said Werribee Magistrates Court “… has just two courtrooms, is outdated and unsafe”. “Wyndham’s population has grown from 40,000 people to 257,000 since these law courts

were built, and as such, it is failing to properly service the community,” the submission stated. Cr McAliney said that building the new justice precinct was “an absolute must” for Wyndham. “This project cannot be delayed yet another year,” she said on Facebook. “Our Werribee Magistrates Court is draconian, embarrassing … victims and perpetrators sit together, causing an absolute huge security risk”. Cr McAliney also said “many thousands of cases” were being diverted from Werribee to Sunshine Magistrates Court.

A state government spokesperson said: “The Andrews Labor government has provided significant funding in the last two state budgets for planning and land acquisition for a new Wyndham Law Court, which will form part of a broader Wyndham Justice Precinct. “More than $27 million has so far been allocated towards both the Wyndham court and a new court facility in Bendigo. “The new court will replace the existing Werribee Magistrates Court, which is no longer large enough to accommodate the needs of the rapidly growing Wyndham population.”

A large crowd gathered at Wyndham Park on Saturday for the Holi, which is known as the “festival of colours” among the global Hindu community. MNCWEST secretary Roshani Shrestha said Holi was sometimes celebrated on a full moon day, which is also called “Phagu Purnima”. Ms Shrestha said people from many cultural backgrounds attended the Holi celebration at Wyndham Park. “The event attracted more than 300 cross-cultural community members … celebrated with social and cultural exchange of greetings together, with singing and dancing full of colours and food,” she said. Pet off the hook after bait scare By Alesha Capone A pet owner was left with a hefty vet bill after her dog swallowed a baited fish hook at Wyndham Harbour earlier this month. Petina Stevens said she was walking her border collie Teddy along the pier on March 9, while people were fishing. Ms Stevens said she has walked Teddy at the site for months but on this particular day, he picked up a baited hook which had been left on the footpath and swallowed it straight away. Ms Stevens said she grabbed Teddy as three men cut the fishing line, which the hook was attached to.

“From this time I was on my own, I asked for help to drive me back to my car which was over 1.5 kilometres from where I was,” she said. But all the men said they had no car. Ms Stevens said that by this time, Teddy was “gagging with pain and choking”. “I went to the end of the pier, there were three cars there and begged for help,” she said. But again, no one wanted to help. Ms Stevens said she had to walk Teddy back to her own car, as he is too big for her to carry. She rushed Teddy to a Werribee vet clinic, where he was operated on straight away, as the hook was stuck in his throat. “He is very lucky it never went down to

his stomach, as it could have killed him,” Ms Stevens said. Ms Stevens said Teddy was home and doing well but his surgery cost more than $1500. “To the man who left the hook in the pathway exposed and baited, if you want your hook back let me know,” Ms Stevens said. In 2016, Wyndham council launched a campaign calling on people who use waterways to throw litter in bins. Fishing litter, including discarded hooks and lines, can be detrimental to wildlife and pets. There are also several ‘Seal the Loops’ fishing line bins located in Werribee South, near the boat ramp and foreshore.

Lisa Field from the Werribee Hospital Foundation said the book sale was the brainchild of Heather Brett, who often fundraises for the Royal Children’s Hospital. “We have so many books … and it’s all for a good cause,” Ms Field said. “The proceeds of the sale will be part of our annual gifting to the hospital, and I’d have to say the priority is around maternity and children’s services, because there is such a demand in that area. “We’ll certainly be supporting local

Green light for register By Alesha Capone Wyndham council is branching out in a new direction. The council is calling on residents to nominate trees on public land for potential inclusion in the Wyndham Significant Tree Register. The council has introduced the register to help protect historic trees in the municipality, and will amend the local planning scheme so that anyone wanting to remove, damage or lop a registered tree would need to apply for a planning permit.

More than 120 trees, including some which are more than a century old, have so far been nominated for the register. Wyndham’s environment and sustainability portfolio holder, Cr Heather Marcus, said anyone wanting to nominate additional trees for the register had until the end of the month. “So far we have seen some excellent heritage trees nominated, including a 120-year-old peppercorn tree, a 70-year-old sugar gum tree and even a 150-year-old river red gum,” she said. A river red gum on Riversdale Drive, Tarneit, which has an estimated age of about 230 years, has also been nominated for the register. The resident who nominated it said: “It’s on my way to my running track, I love this tree when it’s sunset time. [It] Looks so beautiful and I have pictures of it on my computer and mobile too.”

Cr Marcus said the register would identify and support the protection of significant trees on land owned or managed by the council. The council’s website states that in the future, councillors will consider including trees located on private land on the register.

City history is streets ahead Carter Avenue and the Manor Estate in Werribee could soon be protected by a heritage overlay under a Wyndham council plan to recognise the historical significance of both sites. The council is requesting permission from the state planning minister to prepare heritage overlays for both sites, which were identified as being worthy of protection by the community back in 2017. The council has also sought interim planning controls until permanent controls are approved to prevent any potential demolition. The Manor Estate in Werribee was built by Percy Chirnside from 1895-96 and was mostly destroyed by fire in 1966. Heritage overlay mapping covers stone wall remnants and some trees, but this new application aims to apply the heritage overlay to the wider site and plantings. The council also wants to apply a heritage overlay on Carter Avenue in Werribee, a residential street of 20 residential properties that was originally built as a housing estate for the Carter brothers’ factory employees. The street is an extension of the Carter estate, which is already protected by a heritage overlay. Councillor Tony Hooper said this was the first formal step towards celebrating and acknowledging locally significant precincts. Charlene Macaulay

Police help call on petrol thefts The Wyndham Petrol Drive Off Team is seeking public help to catch petrol thieves. The team, set up in November last year, has been working closely with retailers to help prevent crime at service stations and give managers a greater understanding about the information that helps investigators. Senior Sergeant Stephen O’Connell said since November, police have seen the volume of reports of petrol drive-offs increase, as well as the volume of information about the crime. Education city pushes on By Charlene Macaulay The Australian Education City consortium has reaffirmed its vision for the East Werribee Employment Precinct by launching a website that details its $31 billion smart city plan. The website features previously unknown details about its master plan for the 412-hectare site, and a number of videos from key players within the consortium and its partners that espouse the benefits of the East Werribee plan. The consortium has promised to deliver six million square metres of education, research and development, innovation, residential, community and commercial space on what is the largest undeveloped parcel of publicly-owned surplus government land in metropolitan Melbourne, including: • A university to cater for 40,000 students, including 20,000 international students; • Housing to accommodate 80,000 residents, including 21,000 high or medium density apartments, 6900 student dwellings and 1450 stand-alone houses and townhouses; • An underground train line and new stations that link up to the Werribee line; • Nearly 800,000 square metres of research and development space to be operated by international business park partners, and 1.15 million square metres of other commercial office floor space, which will contribute to more than 90,000 new jobs; and • An arts, culture and entertainment precinct that will include exhibitions, entertainment and community sporting facilities. The consortium has memorandums of understanding to partner with a number of Asian and global companies including PWC, IBM, Honeywell, Cisco, Telstra, JP Morgan and Jacobs. said East Werribee would be a “live, work and play environment” that would create a 20-minute walkable neighbourhood and strong employment opportunities close to home. “[It] will incorporate four schools, from primary up to secondary, as well as a 10,000-student TAFE or training facility and a 40,000-student campus,” Mr Martiensen said. “The [university] campus is going to be a little bit different in that there’s going to be

integration with industry and commercial opportunity, but also it’s going to be serviced by a number of different educational institutions all operating within the same space.” As reported by Star Weekly last month, a spokesperson for Werribee MP Tim Pallas said the state government was “continuing to undertake an assessment of this project before making any decisions”. Delay call on gun mounts A Werribee resident is calling on Wyndham council to hold off on making a decision about the future of the World War II gun mounts discovered at a Werribee South carpark. Lisa Heinrichs, who is sourcing more information about Werribee South’s role in the war through the Australian War Memorial and the National Archives, believes a council-commissioned historical heritage assessment has not covered all the bases. Ms Heinrichs argues that a decision on the future of the gun mounts, or emplacements, should be put on hold until their historical significance has been properly ascertained. As reported by Star Weekly last month, a heritage report recommended that while the gun mounts be kept exposed during the carpark redevelopment works to allow for archaeological recording, “it will be necessary for them to be covered to allow for establishment of the car parking bays”. Wyndham council economy, liveability and innovation acting director Peter McKinnon said responsibility for recognising or commemorating the gun mounts fell to Heritage Victoria, not the council. Mayor Mia Shaw added: “I’m keen, as I’m sure my fellow ward councillors are, to work with Heritage Victoria and the local community to come up with a solution for the site.” Charlene Macaulay

Retail revamp for Manor Lakes By Charlene Macaulay A new-look Kmart store will be the jewel in the crown of a $60 million expansion of Manor Lakes Central that will double the shopping centre’s size. Construction will begin in coming weeks. The mammoth expansion will deliver about 20 new retailers, including Best & Less, Anytime Fitness and a large-scale fruit and vegetable grocer. There will be 500 more carparking spaces and a range of family-friendly features including upgraded parent rooms, children’s interactive

play areas and free wi-fi. The project will be anchored by a new-concept Kmart that will span 5200 square metres and include defined product areas, a central self-service checkout and wide aisles for easier pram and wheelchair access. The centre is owned by Ranfurlie Asset Management, the retail and commercial arm of Dennis Family Corporation. Ranfurlie Asset Management chief executive Mark Wilson said the expansion would coincide with a refurbishment of the existing centre, with both scheduled for completion early next year.

The project is tipped to create about 300 construction jobs in coming months and more than 400 ongoing full and part-time retail positions. Mr Wilson said the expansion and revamp were aimed at giving locals an “active shopping experience”. “Alfresco dining spaces will link indoor and outdoor public areas and connect to landscaped communal spaces and kids activity zones,” Mr Wilson said. Ranfurlie Asset Management also operates the 25,000-square-metre Tarneit Central shopping centre, which opened in 2017.

A safe grip on success Family business Aus Lock & Safe will celebrate its 30th anniversary this month. The business began when Bill Catlow bought a “little hardware store” in Railway Avenue, Laverton. It was later re-located to Aviation Road; in 2005, it moved to Laverton North. The company now employs about 20 staff and manufactures its own safes, which it sells online and around Australia. Mr Catlow’s son, Jason, who started with the company as an apprentice, is now a director. The business retains a strong family flavor, as Jason’s wife, Samantha, is the marketing manager and his mother, Agnes, is the bookkeeper. Bill Catlow has retired, but still visits occasionally to lend a hand. He said that 30 years ago, he “never envisioned” the business would become such a success.

“It’s a credit to Jason – it was an achievement for him, he’s done a lot of work,” he said. “I’d also like to acknowledge and thank everyone in the western suburbs who has supported us through all this.” In 2013, Aus Lock & Safe was awarded the Business of the Year Award at the Wyndham Business Awards, while Jason was named runner-up in Businessperson of the Year. Jason said that Aus Lock & Safe retained several clients from its “early days”, including the defence force bases in Point Cook and Laverton, the Westside Hotel and other Laverton and Laverton North-based businesses. Park turns on its party face

Teen’s breakout win By Alesha Capone Werribee teenager Jake Berias has been named the nation’s top junior drag racer. The 15-year-old was recently presented with the Australian Junior Dragster Champion 2018-19 award, for the eight to 17-year old age competitors’ age bracket. “When I knew that I won, it was emotional – I didn’t cry, but I was getting a bit teary,” Jake said. To win the award, Jake accumulated points

as he competed in events across Australia, including three races which he won in Darwin, Alice Springs and Mildura. Jake said his father and grandfather were both drag racers during their youth. His family now accompanies him as he travels the nation to compete, sometimes driving up to six hours to reach an event. “What I enjoy most is probably hanging out with all the people who do drag-racing, their families – and going fast,” Jake said. Jake, who is a member of the Victorian

Drag Racers Club, said he hoped to become a professional when he finished studying. “Hopefully, I can … somehow make my way to America, because over there they do it for a job and they’re racing there every week,” he said. “I’d love to do that for a job.” After he was presented with the trophy, Jake gave a speech in which he thanked his mother, father and sponsors including Harley-Heaven Melbourne, Berias D and Sons, Werribee South Farm Supplies and LT’s Egg Farm.

All things Bollywood will be at the Point Cook Pop Up Park at the weekend. The park will host Bolly Holly, which has been billed as a “fun, colourful, fusion event for everyone” to mark the traditional Hindu festival of Holi. New aquatic plan floated

A $64 million aquatic plan for Hobsons Bay, including a $40 million pool in Altona Meadows and replacing Laverton pool with an outdoor water park, has been unveiled by the council. The Hobsons Bay Aquatic Strategy 2019-2030 outlines plans for a $40.75 million “Western Aquatic Centre” to be built at Bruce Comben Reserve. It would include an eight-lane, 25-metre pool and smaller pools, wellness centre, gym, cafe and new childcare centre. Also planned is a $20.35 million expansion of Bayfit Leisure Centre at Altona North. Laverton Swim and Fitness Centre would be replaced with a $3 million water play and youth facility at the adjacent playground in McCormack Park. Infrastructure and city services director, Sanjay Manivasagasivam said if the plan was adopted the council would seek external funding. “That’s why the priorities are in three to five years: because we need to work towards securing the funding from state and federal Parliament, and also private-public partnership as well,” he said. Bayfit Leisure Centre currently has 276,599 visitations a year and Laverton Swim and Fitness Centre has 157,200. More than 57,000 residents live within five kilometres of the proposed new pool and this number is expected to grow to more than 70,000 by 2036, the plan states. pool would grow from 415,000 in the first year to 520,000 in a decade. Cr Colleen Gates said the plan would go out for community feedback during April. She said the proposed pool at Comben Reserve would directly service Altona Meadows, which comprised 25 per cent of Hobsons Bay’s total population. “Everyone should have the right to be able to ride, walk or drive to their local facility.” Cr Michael Grech said the plan was a huge win for Wetlands ward and for Hobsons Bay. “The outdoor water play … will be a first in Hobsons Bay.”

Deal for nervous buyers By Charlene Macaulay A developer has introduced an industry-first “price protection” initiative at its Wyndham Vale estate, aimed at increasing buyer confidence. Under the initiative, buyers can buy a block of land in Lotus Living’s Jubilee estate now, and if an equivalent block of land at the estate is at a lower price per square metre at the time of settlement, Lotus will pay the difference between the contracted purchase price and the discounted price. Lotus Living project director Daniel Smith

said with market sentiment at its lowest in 10 years, the estate had experienced decreases in inquiries and sales and the initiative aimed to give buyers confidence. “The fundamentals of the market are still good … there’s low interest rates, a growing economy and good migration levels,” Mr Smith said. “All of those factors have been materially unchanged over the last 12-18 months. “The property market has certainly come off the top of the market, but I think the situation has been exacerbated by the credit squeeze and the banking royal commission, and this is a

way for us trying to provide confidence back to the market.” As reported by Star Weekly earlier this month, Wyndham real estate agents say the property market is “not all doom and gloom”. Hockingstuart Werribee senior sales consultant Samantha McCarthy said while there were plenty of media reports about house prices dropping about 10 per cent, this did not seem to be occurring in Wyndham. “Some properties might not achieve the same price they would have 12 to 18 months ago, but that is to be expected, because the market couldn’t have sustained that kind of growth.”

Batters up for national squad Two young Werribee residents have been selected to represent Australia at an international softball tournament. Jye Robinson and Noah Cooney, who both play at the Werribee Softball Association, have been selected for the national under-15 Australian softball team. They have been invited to attend the Softball Australia International Friendship Series in Queensland from July 5 to 12. Jye and Noah said they became involved with softball at about the age of six or seven years old, as both of their mothers played the sport. Finn claims station security off the rails Western metropolitan MP Bernie Finn has called for a “crime blitz” at Williams Landing train station, to help prevent bicycles being stolen from the station’s Parkiteer bicycle storage cage During a speech in Parliament last month Mr Finn, who rides his bike to the station every day, said a constituent had written to him after her brother’s bicycle was stolen from the station during daylight hours. The Williams Landing Parkiteer cage, which has capacity for 47 bikes, can be unlocked by anyone with an access card. Bicycle Network gives access cards to cyclists who apply for a pass. Mr Finn said the minister for public transport, Public Transport Victoria and police should organise “a blitz on crime at Williams Landing station” to prevent theft and vandalism of bicycles. A Public Transport Victoria spokesperson said there was CCTV installed at the station and cameras had also been installed inside the bike cage. The spokesperson said there were more than 100 Parkiteer cages across the Melbourne train network. The Bicycle Network recommends riders use a D-lock to secure their bikes and also advises riders to remove any valuable items, such as lights and trip computers from their bikes. Alesha Capone

MY WYNDHAM Kevin Thompson is a jack of all trades. He worked in a hardware store, owned a petrol station and cardboard business, became a pilot and has spent 15 years tinkering with a 45-foot boat in his shed. The 90-year-old talks to Charlene Macaulay. What’s your connection to Werribee? I was born and bred in Werribee. I was born in Wandene House, where McDonald’s is now. It [Werribee] was a lot smaller than it is now. I went to the Werribee State School. Tell me about your family. I’ve been married for 67 years on April 14. I used to be an amateur bike rider and I was racing over in Tasmania and as I was walking around I saw this girl [Ilma] sitting on the mud guard of a car and I thought ‘I’ve seen her before’. So I went up and said g’day and bought her an ice-cream and everything happened from there. I didn’t win any races, but I won the bird. We had four kids, Diane was the eldest, Gary and Susan. We lost a girl, Helen, when she was about 11 – she had a brain tumour.

When we got married we moved back because we worked here. I worked in Werribee for the Thompson Brothers, it was the family business – my father and his four brothers and four nephews. You know where Bunnings is? That belonged to the Thompson Brothers, as a hardware store timber yard and saw mill and joinery shop. They sold the business when I was 37, and it was after that time that I started selling scrap cardboard to Smorgons. Then I thought, if I buy a machine I can make my own boxes and sell them, which I did … and started a little

I lost my eyesight [through macular degeneration] about two years ago, so the work suddenly stopped. I’ve made everything on it – the deck, the rails, the inside – except the outside shell.

Do you have any other hobbies? Aside from fiddling with boats, I learnt how to fly when I was about 40 as a private pilot, because I’d always wanted to. I’ve flown all over Australia many times and have taken many tourists from America wanting to see the outback.

Nude bathing was agreed to in principle by Werribee Shire Council at its last meeting, in response to a questionnaire from the Minister for Youth Sport and Recreation, Mr. Brian Dixon. t’s been three months since Avalon Airport opened its new international terminal, with twice daily AirAsia flights to Kuala Lumpur, and the flights are already extremely popular. The new international terminal is functioning smoothly and passengers are enjoying the simple processes, the duty free shopping and the relaxed atmosphere in the Departure Lounge. The low-gradient ramp provides an improved boarding experience for customers with limited ability or those who require assistance – and it makes boarding safer for every passenger, as it removes the risk of tripping or bottlenecks on stairs. structure will soon change to reflect this shift, with cost-effective parking available for longer-term travellers. All parking will still be right out the front of the airport, with a very easy walk to check-in. Baggage wrapping and storage are now available. been opened just off the Departure Lounge, adding to the one already in the forecourt. Family care key to dental success A

little over a year ago, Dental@ Hoppers principal dentist, Dr Sarojani Maskey decided to return to practice locally in the hope of being able to work close to family and home. VEGETATION MANAGEMENT NEAR OVERHEAD POWERLINES Wyndham City Council has contracted Citywide Service Solutions Pty Ltd to Manage its Vegetation Electrical Line Clearance Program. As part of this program, the street trees and powerlines are inspected regularly to ensure no impact to power supply through conﬂict with trees. All vegetation maintenance work is required to be carried out in compliance with the Electrical Safety Act (Electric Line Clearance) Regulations 2015. These regulations stipulate a minimum safe clearance between trees and powerlines, to keep re-growth clear of power lines. Wyndham City Council is responsible for management of power line clearance in the area highlighted in the map below. The tree works in this area will be carried out over the next four months. Against all the odds, Hoppers Crossing has taken out the CV Womenâ€™s Community Cricket north-west one-day title. The Cats survived two thrilling finals that went down to the last over to become champions. Having to play both the semi-final and the grand final away and being the lower ranked side in each game, the Cats were undoubtedly the outsiders. All that mattered was the belief that existed in the Cats camp. Hoppers Crossing went into its grand final against Ballarat knowing if it played to its optimum, it could produce a giant-killing performance. SPORT Devils fail to fire in lacklustre opener Werribee Devils are licking their wounds after a first round shellacking in the Big V basketball men’s state championship. The Devils were mauled 92-64 by Keilor Thunder in a lopsided game at the Keilor Basketball Stadium on Sunday. Thunder import and former NBA G League player Mike Anderson did the most damage for the Thunder with a game-high 25 points. Jacob Formosa was a shining light for the Devils with 22 points, four rebounds and two steals. Formosa shot eight-from-11 from the field in an efficient effort. Devils imports Konor Kulas and David Shepard pulled their weight for the team. Kulas scored 17 points with eight rebounds, while Shepard had a double-double 18 points and 10 rebounds. The rest of the Devils team could only shoot a dismal two-from-28 from the field. Werribee (0-1) will need to clean up its act quickly before it faces early ladder leader Casey Cavaliers (1-0) at Casey Stadium on Sunday. Meanwhile, newly promoted Werribee

■ The roller coaster ride that is the AFL season gets under way this week and the Bulldogs have a difficult first-up opponent in Sydney. The players will be wearing the ‘Thor’-inspired jumpers when they run onto Marvel Stadium, and why not? It is a marketing exercise, pure and simple. The club is not changing the colours, deleting the past or rewriting the theme song. I am a traditionalist in many ways but I don’t see the long term harm in this and if it becomes an annual occurrence, then so be it. The harsh commercial realities of running a football club do have to be factored in sometimes.

Werribee’s midas touch By Lance Jenkinson Just when it seemed Werribee City’s form could not get any better, it has delivered a game coach Sergio Sabbadini describes as “some of the best football we’ve played all year”. The Bees made it five straight wins to start the National Premier League 2 west season in a flawless 4-0 victory over Moreland City on the road at Campbell Reserve on Saturday. It was a thing of beauty for Bees fans as they witnessed their side defend with a purpose, dominate the midfield and finish with aplomb. “We defended well, the midfield controlled the entire game and the strikers were a handful all day,” Sabbadini said. “The goals we scored were pretty spectacular.” It was one of those days when everything Werribee City touched turned to gold. Sabbadini was in fine form, calling the shots from the sidelines. With Dion Paola suspended, he called on Liam Brian to fill a void on the wing after Takanori Nishimoto was moved into a more central position. Brian capped his performance with the Bees’ first two goals, in the 20th and 60th minutes. “The first goal was a classy one involving about five or six players with an awesome finish,” Sabbadini said. “He then hit one into the top corner for his second goal.” Nishimoto relished the chance to get on the ball in a more central position. He was a conduit between defence and attack. When Brian went off with cramp, Nishimoto moved back to his more familiar role out wide, providing an assist in Lisandro Paz’s 74th-minute goal. Paz predicted during the week that a goal by him was not far off. “I said to him during the week, ‘It’s about time you scored’,” Sabbadini said. “He replied, ‘Yeah, it’s coming’. “He got one for us against his old club. He showed a lot of class by not celebrating much against his old team.” Jake Butler rounded out Werribee City’s scoring with a goal in the 87th minute. It was a tough weekend for New Zealanders following the Christchurch massacre and Sabbadini made sure his players with links to the country were ready to play. “We’ve got three of them with New Zealand links,” Sabbadini said. “Jake’s a New Zealander and the other two are Australians who have lived in New Zealand. ■ All football fans, regardless of the club you support, want blokes such as Dale Morris playing for as long as he can. His latest injury setback was felt by all who love the game and the warriors who beat the odds to play it. Dale plays footy because he loves it, and that love has driven him to – and through – all sorts of adversity. It has also piloted him to achieve the ultimate success – an AFL premiership. E.J Whitten’s famous on-ground speech in his last game focused on guts and determination, and that befits the man who wears the number 38 for the Bulldogs. Like all football fans, I hope he wears it again soon. ■ Werribee Cricket Club has every right to be filthy about missing out on playing a final at home, and Werribee Football Club has every right to want to host practice games on its home ground. The problem of course is it is the same ground, wanted for the same time. Shared grounds will become a thing of the past if the land becomes available for sports to go it alone. Werribee Football Club has not had a home practice game for a decade and has a multi-million dollar facility which hosted the game last Friday night in front of a good crowd. Werribee Cricket Club has enjoyed great results on its home track this year and lost that enormous advantage when forced to relocate. We all know the problem and the solution. Fix it. ■ Werribee will be happy that its third XI have made the grand final after a gutsy outright win over Brunswick last weekend. It was a low scoring game that was hanging in the balance but Werribee took control. Mixed fortunes for Hoppers Crossing with the seconds missing out, unable to get the 220 for victory, but the fourths chasing down 223 to win.
