Freeway art bill slammed By Alesha Capone Plans for a $425,000 sculpture to be installed in Werribee as part of the state government’s Western Roads Upgrade have come under fire. The $1.8 billion Western Roads Upgrade will upgrade eight main roads in the west, plus improve and maintain more than 260 kilometres of roads from Footscray to Werribee. The project is being delivered as a public-private partnership by Major Road Projects Victoria (MRPV) and Netflow. The two organisations and McClelland

Sculpture Park+Gallery last month invited artists to submit designs for a sculpture to be installed near the new Duncans Road and Princes Freeway interchange. The budget for the artwork, including fabrication, installation and the artist’s fee, is $425,000 plus GST. However, several Wyndham residents said the funding would be better spent on roads. John Frost, of Point Cook, said the money could be used to upgrade the intersection of Point Cook and Sneydes roads. “Or get the pedestrian light turned on outside the Point Cook town centre on

Dunnings Road, which have been finished and not working for two years,” he said. Western metropolitan region MP Bernie Finn said although he appreciated art, the money should be used to make Duncans Road safer. “Fix the road before you start making artwork or hanging Van Gogh from the bridge over the freeway or anything like that,” he said. On the Star Weekly Facebook page, Krystal agreed with Mr Finn. “I don’t care for artwork but I’d love for some of the pot holes to be filled in,” she wrote.

Several other residents said the money would be better spent on upgrading roads or installing more carparks at local train stations. Dan wrote: “Drive from Wyndham Vale to Werribee at 8am in the morning and tell me that 400k in artwork is money well spent.” Major Road Projects Victoria acting project director Grant Deeble said the sculpture would be an artwork “… that road users in Melbourne’s west can admire for years to come”. An advisory panel is expected to recommend its preferred design to Netflow and MRPV by June.

Youth support key to crime fight By Charlene Macaulay Encouraging teenagers to be more active in their schools and communities is the key to preventing youth crime. That’s the word from last week’s Wyndham Youth Forum, which brought together police, government departments, support agencies, community organisations, schools and young people for a day-long event to discuss how best to engage young people. The event, at Encore Events Centre in Hoppers Crossing, was hosted by former AFL player and Whitelion co-founder Glenn Manton. It explored issues, barriers and challenges facing young people and potential solutions.

Victoria Police north-west metro division Superintendent Therese Fitzgerald said availability and accessibility of services, language barriers facing parents and one-size-fits-all approaches had been identified as common problems faced by young people and their families. She said key opportunities included getting young people to contribute positively to the community by volunteering; forging connections between young people and employers; and removing barriers to participation, such as removing hurdles to help kids join sports and other clubs. “When young people do make a mistake, or they are brought to our attention, they’re held

accountable for what they’re doing, but we also get the services that they need so that they don’t re-offend,” Superintendent Fitzgerald said. “The kids talked about the importance of being encouraged. We all make mistakes, but let’s encourage people to get back on the right track.” A young person who spoke at the event, currently completing a double degree at university, said he often felt pre-judged by others based on bad behaviour from other African youths. “I feel judged every day … it really pushes you down when you’re trying to rise up,” he said. “Especially when I was younger, there was a lot of implicit racism.”

Spider wins battle of the beasts

Senior Sergeant Jason Templar said police and support services might need to place their focus on pre-teens and early teens to engage them and prevent crime. “We do some early intervention work with schools and with the community,” he said. “I think we could probably do a lot more in that preventative space rather than the reactive space.” The Wyndham Youth Forum is the first of many regional youth forums Victoria Police will conduct across the state in a bid to tackle youth crime. It is expected community initiatives will be developed based on contributions made at the forums.

Police hit the road for long weekend blitz

A redback spider was the unlikely victor in a battle between two mortal “venomies” at a Ravenhall property. The deadly widow killed an eastern brown snake – the second most venomous land snake in the world – with a bite to its body. Snake catcher Jarrod Bingham, whose area includes Melton and Bacchus Marsh, was called in last Monday to identify and collect the young brown which was striped from head to tail. “The redback spider was inside the brown snakes mouth and just crawled out,” Mr Bingham said. “The snake had a nasty spider bite on the fifth stripe. “It could very well have been mistaken for a tiger snake because of its stripes. “You can’t always identify a snake by its colours. They are not always that uniform brown colour, sometimes they’re blotchy, or they have a black head or they can come in a variety of colours. “It’s important for residents to be able to recognise different snakes so that they can keep safe.” Mr Bingham said development around Bacchus Marsh was a significant factor for the rise in snake encounters. He said call-outs to the area were about double last year’s level when he would take about four calls a fortnight.

Speedsters and other drivers flouting the road rules have been put on notice ahead of this long weekend’s road policing blitz. Westgate Highway Patrol will be among police units across the state to flood major arterial roads in both marked and unmarked cars for Operation Arid, which will run between March 8 to 11. The operation will target the top-five factors that contribute to road trauma: speed, alcohol or drug impairment, using a mobile phone, fatigue and not wearing seatbelts. In particular, speed cameras will be set up in known speed and collision hotspots. Sergeant Marty Wallace from Westgate Highway Patrol said road trauma had a huge ripple effect across the community for not only those involved in accidents but also their family members, emergency services workers attending the scene of crashes and police who have to deliver devastating news to loved ones. Roadsafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council chairman Jim Giddings added: “It has been demonstrated time after time that speed is a contributing factor in most road crashes. “Therefore, stay within the speed limit and drive to suit the conditions you face. “Speeding affects both the risk of a crash happening and the severity of injuries sustained when a crash does happen.”

Carpark to make way for hotel Briefs

By Charlene Macaulay A Werribee off-street carpark will shut down later this month to make way for the cityâ€™s tallest development to date. ADVERTISING The 77-space carpark on the corner of Synnot Street and Duncans Road will close to the public on March 18 for construction to begin on a $49.5 million, 12-storey Holiday Inn hotel, education precinct and carpark slated to open in 2020. The high-rise development will include retail, cafe, lobby areas and car parking on the ground

floor, car parking on levels one to five, an office and education centre on level six, more office space on level seven and a 150-room Holiday Inn hotel on levels nine to 11. There will also be 362 parking spaces on-site, 167 of which will be public. Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw said the development was the first of four carparks owned by Wyndham council that will be converted to high-rise complexes in coming years in a bid to position Werribee as the capital of Melbourneâ€™s west. The council has entered into a public-private

partnership with Pelligra and the Burbank Group for the $250 million revamp of the sites. Pelligra will handle the Synnot Street and Duncans Road development. â€œWyndham is currently experiencing significant tourism growth, and the introduction of international flights to Avalon Airport will see these numbers continuing to rise,â€? Cr Shaw said. â€œThis hotel will add to the accommodation available for visitors to stay in, while also boosting our local economy.â€? Independent analysis has found the councilâ€™s

â€œcatalystâ€? developments will boost Wyndhamâ€™s economy by $465 million once complete and will add 1600 new jobs through construction and ongoing employment opportunities. The council has called on residents and workers to park in one of four nearby off-street parks during construction of the development, Certificate opportunity which is expected to take 18 months. Drivers can park at one of the two off-street parks along Comben Drive, the Cherry Street carpark, a new carpark bounded by Watton, Werribee and Synnot streets, or in one of the on-street parking spaces.

Park proves pop-ular Werribeeâ€™s pop-up park has drawn huge crowds to Station Place this summer. Visitor numbers from Wyndham council reveal 30,851 people enjoyed the pop-up park between January 18 and February 24, with nearly 13,000 flocking to the park for the Australia Day program. The pop-up park included more than 100 free events over its five-week run, including live music, movies, a rotating line-up of food trucks on Sunday afternoons, markets and weekday workshops and activities. Wyndham council economy, innovation and liveability director Peter McKinnon said it was great to see so many locals embrace the park and its events and activities. â€œOne of the great aspects of the Friday Night Live series this year was the breadth of local talent, with Wyndham artists able to share the stage with some music icons,â€? he said. â€œThe new Wyndham Business and Tourism

Mr McKinnon said the council was analysing a visitor survey and would be chatting to surrounding businesses before deciding if the pop-up park would return next summer. He said there were no plans to make the pop-up park a permanent installation. Last year, a number of Station Place traders called for the park to be discontinued or relocated, saying the experiment had been bad for business by closing 22 carparks fronting their stores. â€œAs a result of this feedback from businesses, a number of changes were made to parking management during this yearâ€™s program, as well as programming additional activities during business hours,â€? “Since the Werribee Mercy Hospital expansion and the opening of our intensive care unit last year, we are increasingly seeing more complex and diverse cases at Werribee Mercy Hospital, which we believe is contributing to the increased interest from graduates in our hospital.” The recent $87 million expansion involved four new levels being built on top of the Catherine McAuley Centre. One of the western suburbs newest politicians has questioned why the state government is funding a community hospital in Point Cook when Werribee Mercy Hospital is not big enough to cater for Wyndham’s burgeoning population. Speaking in Parliament, independent upper house MP Catherine Cumming said she was among many surprised at the government’s election promise to build the community hospital. “Given the costs involved through purchasing the land and eventually building on it, would the money not be better spent on improving the services, particularly the maternity ward, at the Werribee Mercy Hospital, which at present is only able to meet the needs of 40 per cent of the Wyndham community?” Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw said while the council advocated to expand the Werribee Mercy Hospital, it also supported a community hospital for Point Cook. “The Point Cook Community Hospital will be of great benefit to the local community by taking pressure off the major hospitals in the western suburbs and also boosting our local economy,” Cr Shaw said. The state government did not respond to Star Weekly’s questions about its decision, but Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said the government was “making sure families in the west can get the treatment and care they need”.

Memorial to mark the fallen

By Charlene Macaulay An heirloom wedding dress that a dying mother left behind for her baby daughter is among the items of clothing salvaged from last month’s devastating fire at Werribee’s Master Dry Cleaners. Darren Buller said when his wife Andrea died from a brain aneurysm in 2001, she left her 14-month-old daughter Tayla with a number of letters she’d written and her wedding dress. When Tayla had her debutante ball 18 months ago, her stepmother Elizabeth helped refashion the wedding dress into a deb gown that Tayla proudly wore on the night. More than a year later, the family took the dress in to Master Dry Cleaners to have it dry cleaned. When fire broke out at the dry cleaning business about 10.30pm on February 4, the dress was inside the premises. However, while the building and a number of customers’ garments were extensively damaged, the dress was among the items to be saved, with the box it was housed in singed. The dress is currently being re-cleaned. Mr Buller said the family was relieved to discover that the dress had escaped damage. “When they told me that the dress was fine, I walked out crying,” he said. “There’s only a couple of things that Tayla has got of her mum’s and she was only 14 months old when Andrea passed away, so to be able to wear the dress for her deb was really, really special for both her and her grandparents. “The fact that they’d packed it in a box two weeks before was the thing that saved it. If it had been hanging up, it would have been destroyed.”

Works have started on a new war memorial for Werribee. Pouring of foundations began for the memorial at the corner of Princes Highway and Cherry Street, on Monday. The site marks the beginning of Werribee’s Avenue of Honour, which was established in 1918. Representatives from the Werribee RSL attended an official sod-turning ceremony for the memorial on Friday last week, along with RSL Victoria’s state president Dr Robert Webster and Wyndham councillors. The state government contributed $184,410 to fund construction of the memorial, which will honour soldiers from the area who died during World War I. Werribee RSL branch vice-president David McDiarmid said he was looking forward to seeing the memorial built. The memorial will include the names of 60 fallen soldiers from the Werribee area, with each of the names etched on to individual bluestone blocks that will form two rounded walls to represent the shape of a poppy. The centre of the monument will contain a granite structure featuring an etched Australian Rising Sun badge and a carved Sword of Sacrifice. A gravel path leading to the memorial will be lined with plants of Gallipoli rosemary and Anzac roses.

ho can you trust? Where can you go to feel safe? Our so-called pillars of virtue have been smashed in recent times and I doubt some will ever recover. Police, churches, banks, politicians and schools have all had their established and exalted places in society questioned and scrutinised, for very good reasons. This leaves a void, with no easy or obvious replacements. The Catholic Church, the legal profession and our police are the latest to be exposed for a litany of illegal acts and betrayal of trust. The ramifications are brutal and long term. The damage may be irreparable in some cases. The cloud of doubt and distrust will be there for a long time and rebuilding those pillars of virtue will be painstakingly slow. I believe the amount of decent, caring people in the vocations mentioned far outnumber the ones who have engendered shame and disgrace. We have to believe that, don’t we? It surely is no coincidence that incidences of

mental health issues are on the rise as the fabric of our society becomes more and more frayed. So who can you turn to in times of need? For some, family and friends are the last option for help, understanding and sanctuary, especially if they are the cause of the problem. Is professional help the answer? As my wife says, it is the chicken soup principle – it can’t hurt. Thankfully the social stigma and, in some cases, shame and ridicule faced by those seeking professional help has decreased. This is where we need our three levels of government to weigh in and make sure affordable services are in place and meet the needs of the city, unlike so many other services. This should be a priority. To answer the question that started this column – I am not sure, but I hope you can find someone you can trust, if and when you need them. You may be surprised who that person turns out to be. Life is too short to be sad, miserable, frightened or helpless. ■

A 26-year-old Tarneit motorcyclist died in hospital last week, three days after a collision with a car. The motorcyclist was travelling along Bethany Road about 8.40pm on Sunday, February 24, when his bike and a BMW sedan collided. The driver of the car, a 29-year-old Mount Waverly man, stopped and assisted at the scene.

Quad bikes stolen

Police have appealed for information after four separate incidents of quad bikes being stolen from sheds at properties in Werribee and Werribee South. Police said the thefts, mostly at farms, had occurred since the beginning of the year. Police have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Sex assault charges

A teenager has been charged in relation to sexual assaults that occurred in Point Cook on Sunday, February 24, and in Laverton on Monday, February 25. Westgate Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team detectives charged a 19-year-old Seabrook man last Monday. He was bailed to appear at Werribee Magistrates Court on May 14.

Last week I started my visits to local schools â€“ this is something that I wanted to do when I became Mayor as I think itâ€™s really important for young people to learn about local democracy and I was also really keen to get out to see some of the newer schools I hadnâ€™t been to before.

Hitting the right note Mofiz Ul Haq is passionate about being creative, making music and volunteering in the west. The 22-year-old Sunshine resident, who is studying a bachelor of songwriting and music production, recently released his first EP under the pseudonym Vertex. Haq said the EP was â€œhighly inspiredâ€? by his partner, whom he has been dating for eight years. The EP is titled 2555, in honour of the number of days they had spent together, by their seventh anniversary. â€œIt is hard to describe my music style, but I would say itâ€™s like electronic jazzy funk-pop, with different elements of this and that,â€? he said. Since moving to Australia from Dubai at the age of 20, Haq said he has also started

volunteering in the western suburbs. He said that his partner, a prolific volunteer herself, introduced him to the Centre for Multicultural Youth (CMY) not long after he arrived in Australia. At CMY, along with 10 other young people, he created a social media campaign called #GO4IT. Haq said the campaign had reached more than 6000 people online, and that this positive experience inspired him to volunteer more, including at a Maribyrnong youth centre, on the Brimbank Youth Events Committee and with the Wyndham-based eYouth Project. â€œVolunteering in the community, I feel a step closer to achieving my goals.â€?

Rubbish hits the road in Wyndham

New school in the works By Charlene Macaulay Construction is under way on a long-awaited senior school in Point Cook, set to open its doors in 2020. Point Cook South Senior Secondary College, which will cater for years 10 to 12, will include a three-storey building with separate performing arts and physical education facilities, two mixed-use basketball/netball courts and a sports oval. The school, which is being built to accomodate 1100 students, will be open for

year 10 students next year and will stagger years 11 and 12 over consecutive years. Enrolment boundaries for the new school are still being determined and will be made public later in the year. Similarly, a principal has yet to be appointed. Meanwhile, it is likely the interim name Point Cook South Senior Secondary College will be changed before the school opens its doors. As reported by Star Weekly, Labor first promised this school in the lead-up to the 2014 state election. The state government faced challenges in

acquiring a site for the school before securing land along Point Cook Homestead Road. Altona MP Jill Hennessy said once complete, the school will give senior school students access to first-rate facilities. “I’m excited that the community’s vision for a brand new senior school in Point Cook is turning into a reality and it’s great to see building is well under way on this much-needed local project,” Ms Hennessy said. The school received $53 million in the 2018-19 state budget for building and construction works.

If you think some of Wyndham’s roads are rubbish, you’d be right. Wyndham council has resurfaced three main roads using a combination of recycled soft plastics, glass and other recyclables, sourcing the materials from across metropolitan Melbourne. Dunnings Road in Point Cook, Haines Drive in Wyndham Vale and sections of Boundary Road between Derrimut Road and the Regional Rail bridge have been resurfaced using the equivalent of 705,000 plastic bags, 50,000 glass bottles, toner from 16,000 print cartridges, and 250 tonnes of reclaimed road asphalt. Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw said using the recyclables to resurface roads was part of a trial to improve existing assets and reduce wastage. “With our population growing at such a rapid rate, not only is our need for improved road infrastructure on the rise, but the amount of waste and recyclables coming out of households is also on the rise,” Cr Shaw said. “Imagine a Wyndham where all our roads are upgraded using recyclables. “Ten recycled bottles per household a week based on our population equates to about 2.5 million bottles – this could deliver 10,000 tonnes of asphalt for our local roads.” Charlene Macaulay

MacKillop’s puppy love Millie the Labrador is helping to brighten the lives of children in Melbourne’s west. An education therapy dog, nine-year-old Millie is a regular visitor at MacKillop Specialist School in Maidstone where she is the star attraction of the Paw Pals program. Run by MacKillop Family Services, the program helps to engage children across the west who are struggling. Millie often accompanies children who feel anxious about entering classes or school. MacKillop Specialist School principal Anne Henderson said Millie’s presence had led to “remarkable” changes in some students. “One young man who previously refused to open his door to our education workers gets so excited about Millie’s visits that he plans in

advance what books he will read to her,” she said. The only problem for MacKillop is that Millie is in such demand that they cannot keep up. The organisation is hoping to raise $200,000 to train more dogs and will host a matched giving day called Paws 4 Kids on Wednesday, March 6. The 24-hour campaign is asking for donations from the public, which will be matched four-fold by “matchers” including the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation. Dumped rubbish a waste of money By Alesha Capone

In the run for fun and charity Werribee’s Steve Wade has been running for fun – and a good cause – for a long time. And he’s not about to stop any time soon. Mr Wade is a long-time participant in the Manor Lakes Wyndham Rotary Fun Run/ Walk. He has taken part in the fun run for the past eight years, and said his first experience was with a group of friends from “the Rec Centre” in Werribee (now Eagle Stadium). Mr Wade’s business, Wade Builders, has also sponsored the event for about eight years. This year’s fun run will be held on Sunday, March 17, with most of the money raised to go towards Werribee Mercy Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit. Entrants will be able to run five or 10 kilometres, or walk four or eight kilometres, along the Werribee River. Mr Wade, a former Rotary member, said he usually tackled the 10-kilometre run. He praised the efforts of Rotary members and volunteers in organising the event. “The main thing is to make sure the Rotary club gets recognised – and the volunteers who are standing in the sun as we run past and pull down the banners after we go home,” he said. Volunteers at a Werribee op shop say they are fed up with rubbish being dumped outside the store. Rotary Fit4Use Store manager Lorry Rowe said a large amount of rubbish was left outside the Railway Avenue shop last Wednesday. “It’s so unfair to use us as a dumping ground when what we are doing is helping the community,” Ms Rowe said. The items dumped at the store included cardboard boxes and rubbish bags full of waste, damaged clothing, and several X-rays which had the patient’s name inscribed upon them. Ms Rowe said the matter was made worse by people who had gone through the op shop’s bins, and the dumped rubbish, after it was left outside the shop. She said rubbish was often dumped outside the shop, despite several signs which say “no dumping” and CCTV from nearby businesses covering the site. “We end up spending quite a few thousand dollars to dispose of the dumped rubbish,” she said. “I’m horrified at people’s mentality, to think that they can inconvenience us at a cost.” Wyndham council’s economy, innovation and liveability director Peter McKinnon said dumping rubbish was never acceptable.” “Council’s Waste and Litter Strategy includes strong targets for Wyndham, including putting an end to illegal rubbish dumping by 2040,” he said. “We recently increased the number of hard waste collections available to households from two to three, making it easier for residents to get rid of any unwanted items. “We also work hard to educate our community on the consequences of littering and dumping.”

Police call for more JPs to help out

Fundraiser with a heart By Charlene Macaulay A Hoppers Crossing mum has raised nearly $1000 for a cause close to her heart. Bev Emmett recently threw open her home for a morning tea, raising $989 for children’s heart disease charity HeartKids as part of its annual Show Your HeartFeb fundraiser. Ms Emmett’s daughter Taylor, 13, was a HeartKids recipient when, at age seven, she was

found to have holes in her heart and underwent surgery. “Before that [doctors] told her she had a heart murmur and it was nothing to worry about, then one day she walked in to the room and grabbed her chest and fell to the floor,” Ms Emmett said. “They’ve repaired the holes for her, and she’s a bubbly young lady who can do sport and everything else now.

“She’s also joined the CFA. Before [the surgery], she wouldn’t have been able to do it, she couldn’t even walk around the plaza.” While Taylor was in hospital, HeartKids gave her a hand-made quilt and a gift box filled with arts and crafts and books to keep her amused during her stay. “We got through that … now we want to support the people that supported us, and give back,” Ms Emmett said.

Justices of the Peace who volunteer at Wyndham’s police stations are among the busiest in the state. Justices of the Peace – also known as JPs – authorise documents, including statutory declarations and affidavits. The JPs at Werribee and Wyndham North police stations signed nearly 95,000 documents in 2016. JP Trish Vejby said both of Wyndham’s police stations were in need of more volunteer Justices of the Peace, who could donate an hour of their time each month. Ms Vejby said only existing JPs, that is, those who have been officially appointed to the role, could apply. Wyndham police Inspector Adrian Healy said volunteer JPs saved frontline police “hours and hours and hours of certifying and signing documents”. “They [the JPs] are fantastic and we couldn’t operate in any sort of efficient manner without them,” Inspector Healy said. “By having the JPs there, it frees up officers to attend other work more quickly.” He said local police also had a “fantastic relationship” with the volunteer JPs. Flying high for women By Alesha Capone Amer Madol Majak is making a difference to the lives of South Sudanese women living in Victoria. The Tarneit resident, 26, has established the Diar South Sudanese Mental Health Organisation, which is dedicated to engaging and empowering South Sudanese women to fight mental health issues within their community. “What we do is provide counsellors, social workers and activities at a community centre where we have women come together, share food and speak about what we can do better for our futures,” Ms Majak said. “To me, it’s not necessarily about the broader impact – if you can make a difference in one person’s life, that’s a lot.” Ms Majak, a mother of three, said that seeking help for mental health issues was “nothing to be ashamed of”. She said that apart from herself, a core group of seven other volunteers helped to run the organisation. Ms Majak said she was grateful for the “great help” she had received from community leaders such as Victorian Legislative Council president Bruce Atkinson and Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw. In addition to working with Diar South Sudanese Mental Health Organisation, Ms Majak is studying to become a pilot. She said there were not many professional female pilots in South Sudan, which had inspired her to pursue aviation as a career. “I want to say to other people: Just take advantage of this great country of ours [Australia],” she said. “We have so much to offer as women and the community.” Details: bit.ly/2Tby299

Group aims for empowerment South Sudanese residents of Wyndham, especially young people, are receiving assistance with education and employment, thanks to a new community support group. The state government has funded groups in Wyndham, Melton and Dandenong as pilot programs. The Wyndham group, which is managed by Wyndham Community and Education Centre, is staffed by people from South Sudanese backgrounds. Program manager Poly Kiyaga said that since October, the Wyndham group had assisted more than 200 people, including 14 who received help finding employment. He said the group supported young South Sudanese people, and their families, to engage with schools through activities such as a homework club. “It’s all about empowerment and working with groups in the community – for example, women’s groups,” he said. Mr Kiyaga said the Wyndham group was seeking volunteers from all backgrounds and wanted to hear from employers seeking workers. He said anyone from within the South Sudanese community was also welcome to get in contact, whether they had an idea for a project or were seeking support. Hundreds of thousands of people descended upon Avalon Airport between Friday and Sunday to hear the roar of jet engines, see amazing aerial displays up close and view the extensive ground displays and exhibition pavilions. High energy aerobatic team the Russian Roolettes made its long-awaited airshow debut, presenting a precision display using six Russian YAK-52 and Chinese Nanchung Cj6 aircraft. The Roolettes were among nine world-class aerobatic acts to perform at the airshow, with the Air Bandits and national aerobatics champion Paul Bennet also taking centre stage at times during the weekend.

Airshow organisers moved up flying displays to earlier in the day on Saturday and Sunday due to the hot weather. Meanwhile, Friday’s Night Alight pageant saw showers of sparks shoot from the wing tips of aircraft performing death-defying aerobatics; fuselage mounted laser lights pierce the darkening sky; and the Wall of Fire, which erupted along the length of the runway. State Jobs, Innovation and Trade Minister Martin Pakula said the airshow was one of Victoria’s biggest events, attracting more than 200,000 visitors and delivering a huge economic boost to Geelong and the surrounding regions. “The airshow is a great opportunity to showcase Victoria’s world-class expertise in defence, aviation and aerospace to the world, attracting new investments, creating more local jobs and encouraging our brightest minds to consider a career path in these exciting industries,” Mr Pakula said.

MY WYNDHAM Doug Mullett doesn’t do retirement by halves. The former teacher is president of the Werribee Lions, has just written a book and is actively involved in a number of community groups. He chats with Charlene Macaulay. What is your connection to Wyndham?

You’re a keen photographer. Has that been a lifelong hobby?

The family moved here in 1952 – dad was in the RAAF. I grew up in Laverton, when it was still under Werribee, went to Laverton Primary School 2847, which no longer exists. Then went to Werribee High and had to finish secondary school at Footscray because they didn’t have the science area that I was after.

When I was young, I was interested in it, but I couldn’t afford very much. When I started working I finally had some money, so I bought an SR Pentax … and I started doing photography as a real interest. Then someone wanted me to do their wedding and the next minute I started getting calls to do other people’s weddings. What annoyed me was that I could earn more money out of doing photos for one of these weddings than I was getting in a fortnight teaching.

What happened after you finished high school? I went to uni and studied science and then went teaching – because I didn’t finish the degree the first time. I was 18 and teaching … within four weeks, the physics teacher had resigned and the boss asked me if I would take the year 12 physics class … I said: “No, I can’t, because there are girls in there that are the same age as me!” I started teaching in 1969 and retired in 2007.

When I retired, I decided that I’d like to go touring Australia after I toured overseas. Once I went up to Tibboburra … and when I was coming back to Melbourne, I went to avoid a puddle in the road and then next minute I had [crashed] and no idea of where I was, who I was, what I was doing there. A family coming by stopped, made me sit down and gave me some hot, black tea with sugar and gave me something to eat. They called up their friends, who took my motorbike and me into the station, where I was triaged over the phone and

I’ve been in Lions since 1992. I joined at Warracknabeal and then I went to Lismore and then transferred into Lions here. I was also president in 2003. I’ve got a new novel coming out, Methinks You Doth Protest Too Much, and the proceeds of the first 100 copies are going to a Lions club in Nepal to help restore people’s eyesight.

the Royal Flying Doctors Service said they’d pick me up from Tibboburra. I found out afterwards I had four broken ribs on my left. After that, I thought I’d do some fundraising for the Royal Flying Doctors Service, so I arranged to do a trip from Cairns to Perth by bike. Came out of Yulara and I came off [my bike]. The bike flew about 20 metres away, I flew about 35 metres through the air and

landed on my back and knew I was hurting, so wasn’t willing to move. I had a punctured lung, eight breaks in six ribs and a totally shattered shoulder blade.

This week will be my 350th donation down at the blood bank here. I started in the late ’70s when I was working at Werribee High and one of the teachers shamed me into doing it.

And you still ride your motorbike?

Werribee branch of the Australian Labor Party has been thoroughly condemned by the owners of a block of land which Werribee Shire Council had intended acquiring for a possible future overpass. An electrician was in a critical condition at the Alfred Hospital on Monday night after receiving burns to 80 per cent of his body in a Laverton North industrial accident last Wednesday. The North Balwyn man, whose name has not yet been released, was airlifted to the burns unit after an electrical switchboard at the Tanon pet food chilling and processing plant in Holcourt Rd, exploded into flames about 9.50am.

Works on the long-awaited $3.6 million Werribee central business district facelift will begin in June. The Mayor of Wyndham, Councillor David McLaren, last week confirmed the much-delayed works – first proposed while the city was run by commissioners and before the arrival of councillors in March 1997.

An elderly Werribee man has been stripped of his independence after thieves stole his electric mobility scooter. The vehicle was the only way 83-year-old Thomas Craw could make his trips to the supermarket, after suffering a series of strokes.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir gives a new ‘local’ the thumbs up Melba Social is up and running just as two other new/newish places – Kensington Food Hall and the revamped Hardimans Hotel – are offering similar offerings, all three joints within a few street numbers of each other. Of course, we are interested to see what Melba Social tastes like so are happy to accept an invitation taken up by a CTS team of three (see full disclosure below). We find the food and service to be lovely, with much of the latter crossing over to very good. It is mostly straight-up Italian fare here. Notably, the portion sizes and pricing both serve to generate an impression of good value, that impression given heft by the busy Thursday night of which we are part. A trio of arincini ($13) – plump, generous and gooey with mozzarella and mushroom, topped by parmesan and rocket, all residing upon a superb, basilised tomato sugo. “Freaking hot” buffalo wings ($15) are only mildly spicy and look rather drab. But the proof is in the eating – they taste very fine and the serve is plenty big enough for all of us to have a hearty go. Oddly enough, it is the entree with the plainest visuals – “smokey” mushrooms ($12, above) – that most impresses. The panko-crumbed mushies are quite delicate and so, so juicy and tasty. My 200-gram porterhouse ($22) is top stuff, delivered just right at medium rare. The mash is a fine steak friend. The “cafe

Julian loves his three cheese gnocchi ($24) with gorgonzola, grana padano and vintage cheddar. The pasta pillows really are like the proverbial clouds and very wonderful. I am trying to wean Bennie off chicken burgers – both for his own good and for purposes of CTS diversity. But he enjoys the Melba Social rendition ($18). Desserts are superb. Stone fruit and raspberry almond crumble ($10) immediately elicits from me the comment: “This is just like My Mum Makes!” A good deal richer and more decadent is “sizzling” brownie ($15). The brownie square is bigger than it appears and swims in a sticky sauce studded with blueberries. Melba Social strikes us as the sort of place that will become a cherished “local”. Werribee Mercy Hospital is thrilled to be in partnership with the Rotary Club of Wyndham for this year’s event. Now in its 13th year, the Wyndham Rotary Fun Run and Walk has become a regular feature in the Wyndham community calendar, attracting hundreds of locals to participate each year. Over the years, the event has not only raised awareness on the importance of regular exercise and healthy living, it has also been successful in raising funds for many organisations. Werribee Mercy Hospital has enjoyed a long-term relationship with the Rotary Club of Wyndham. Over the past few years, the Wyndham Rotary Fun Run and Walk has raised significant funds for the Intensive Care Unit at Werribee Mercy Hospital, which officially opened its door in August 2018. The eight-bed ICU is the only ICU in the region, providing critical, life-saving care to residents of Wyndham and surrounding areas. This year, funds raised from the Wyndham Rotary Fun Run and Walk will again be directed towards the Werribee Mercy Hospital Intensive Care Unit. My experience in acute care for the past two decades has reinforced my belief in the old Latin saying: Mens sana, in corpore sano — a healthy mind in a healthy body. It is often used to express the idea that physical activity is an important or essential part of mental and psychological wellbeing. The Wyndham Rotary Fun Run and Walk has something for everyone: from the serious runner to the weekend shuffler and even those who just enjoy a good walk! I encourage you, your family and friends to get behind this long established, family-friendly event. My family and I are very excited to participate and we look forward to seeing you on the day.

Luke represented Australia in both distances at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janero. He also competed in both events at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast winning a bronze medal in the 800m final.

SPORT Werribee stars as the AFL comes to town Years of behind-the-scenes planning went into the AFL’s push into Wyndham last weekend. The Chirnside Park precinct, transformed into an AFL-standard venue through its redevelopment, broke new ground when a JLT Series game between North Melbourne and St Kilda was played there on Saturday, followed by an AFLW game between North Melbourne and Adelaide on Sunday. Despite abnormally hot weather for the first week of March, fans flocked to the venue to catch the stars in action. It was a proud moment for Werribee Football Club chief executive officer Mark Penaluna, who was a key player in initial conversations with the AFL about hosting a match. “We were really fortunate to have the relationship with [AFL facilities and project manager] Ken Gannon, who was advocating on our behalf, as well as people like [AFL Victoria chief executive] Ricky Bell,” Penaluna said. Once the green light was given by the AFL for Werribee to host the two games, the venue had to pass all the safety checks and meet entrance and staff requirements.

Planning for the big weekend had been ongoing since the fixtures were released in November. “Our staff, such as [venue manager] Deanne Musa and [match-day co-ordinator] Zach Thornton, have put a huge amount of work into setting up external areas and arranging staffing to accommodate the large crowd expected,” Penaluna said.

“Council have also been totally supportive, with the work they’ve put in through people like Tom Delahunty. “The way the ground has turned out is nothing short of immaculate, so they should absolutely get a pat on the back for the effort they’ve put in.” The original vision of both Penaluna and late Werribee Football Club president John Nicol was not solely about football. The club wants to use the venue as a community hub and to attract major events. “Our city didn’t have a major events centre, which we saw as pivotal from a sporting point of view,” Penaluna said. “But there was also the question of how we could use a facility like this to attract larger-scale events. We’ve now done that with the JLT and AFLW, we’ll be hosting an outdoor cinema night later this month. “There are all sorts of other things like A-League games and concerts that we can potentially look at.” Lance Jenkinson

Bees win on versatility By Lance Jenkinson Werribee City is showing it can adapt to whatever situation it faces. The top-of-the-ladder Bees were the entertainers of the first two weeks of the NPL 2 west soccer competition, banging in an average of 4.5 goals a game. Their latest win – a narrow 2-1 triumph over Melbourne Victory at Epping Stadium on Sunday – was more to do with their organisation across the park and their strong will than it was with attacking prowess. It was pleasing for Bees coach Sergio Sabbadini to see the extra work the players put into their defensive set-ups in training during the week coming to fruition against a Victory side with a vastly different style to those of the teams they played in the opening fortnight. “We’ve got some experienced heads this year who have played the game and know how to close the game down when it’s needed,” Sabbadini said. “Last year, we were always 100 miles an hour, whereas this year we can put the foot on the ball and control it … you’ve got to be able to do both.” Werribee City had a rough start to the match. In the eighth minute, Bees defender Nick Bavcar carelessly brought down Victory striker Josh Hope in the box. Hope, who has enjoyed A-League experience this season, stepped up to take the penalty, sent Bees goalkeeper Kristian Rossi the wrong way and put the Victory ahead. But Werribee City is proving resilient this season. The Bees came back strongly and were on level terms when Julyan Collett gathered and turned to score a thunderbolt from outside the box with his left boot in the 20th minute. It was the high mark of a strong performance from the centre back. “He played a great game and scored a cracker of a goal,” Sabbadini said. Six minutes later, Werribee City found the lead when Takanori Nishimoto delivered a centimetre-perfect cross to the head of striker Alec Goodwin, who looped the ball into the top right corner. While Werribee City’s attack for the most part was not as eye-catching as in the first two weeks, the quality of the goals was as good as will be seen this season. “Our two goals, I thought, were world class,” Sabbadini said. Patrick O’Malley from Williamstown had a good all round season with 24 wickets and 316 runs. Caulfield will be the team to beat. ■ New rules, new faces, new hair colours and no injuries are the major talking points of any AFL pre-season. Judging by some of the crowd comments I heard at the North Melbourne-St Kilda game at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday, the new rules are just as open for robust discussion as the old ones. If these changes unclutter the game and allow it to look more like Aussie rules than rugby, I am all for them. ■ My love of horse racing is well known, and while it continues to be a sport that attracts bad headlines that is somewhat balanced by champions like Winx and innovations like the All Star Mile, a race where the public voted in 10 of the 14 runners. Backs to the wall, Centurions get the job done Werribee Centrals have taken the tough route to the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 2 finals, but there is nothing that can surprise them now. The Centurions have mixed some intoxicating highs with troubling lows. But when the dust settled, they were in third place and every bit a chance to go on and challenge for the flag. Centurions president Kevin Johnson lauded the side’s “never-say-die attitude”. “They’ve had their backs to the wall most games and they find a way to win,” he said. Centurions had to beat Kingsville – which was also fighting for a place in the top four – in the last round at Skinner Reserve to secure a finals berth. When the Centurions were bundled out for a meagre 111, they were at long odds to feature in the finals. Kingsville was in the box seat at 3-50 overnight.

A fast start with 10 runs off the first over in day two left the Centurions in a world of hurt. “When you make 111 and they’re 3-50 overnight and the first over went for 10, you’re really under the pump,” Johnson said. What happened from that point was remarkable. Werribee Centrals claimed the last seven batsmen for just 36 to have Kingsville all out for 97 – 15 runs short of victory. “They really turned it on,” said Johnson of Centurions’ performance. The tireless bowling performance of Rahmatullah Khwaja as the temperature gauge neared 40C will be remembered at Werribee Centrals for a long time. Khwaja got the better of his former club with a crucial 3-29 off 22 overs. “He bowled from one end all day,” Johnson said. “It was a great performance – unbelievable.

Tiger tie good as a win By Lance Jenkinson Werribee’s unbeaten run, stretching back to November 10, remains intact after a thrilling tie with Oakleigh in a Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association one-day game at Warrawee Park on Saturday. The Tigers and the Oaks were inseparable after 90 overs, both sides finishing on 6-112 from their maximum 45 overs. It came down to the last ball, with Werribee needing four runs to win and three to tie. Jonathan Burton got enough contact to flick the ball off his pads for three, the game ending in a deadlock. It was a result that suited Werribee. Not only did it keep the Tigers’ incredible undefeated run alive, but it also locked away second spot for the finals. The outcome meant so much to both sides that Oakleigh audited the scorebooks post-match to see if there were any discrepancies. It was eventually logged into the VSDCA’s online system as a tied match, much to the delight of Werribee. Werribee captain Tim O’Brien said it was “a really good game of cricket”. “There were stages where we controlled the game and they pegged it back,” he said. “They got away from us for a bit, but we were able to peg it back. “The tie gets us the result that we wanted in the end.” Oakleigh won the toss and batted, reaching its total at a rate of 4.71 runs an over. Oaks top-order batsmen Graeme Vimpani (63) and Brendan McGuinness (70) threatened to take the game away from Werribee with a 110-run partnership. Spin did the trick for Werribee, with Michael Kelly (1-35) removing Vimpani and O’Brien (1-46) dismissing McGuinness. Brad Apps was Werribee’s lone multiple wicket taker with 2-43, while James Freeman took 1-43. It was a tricky target for Werribee to chase down. The Tigers had to do it without star batsman Shaun Dean, who was out for personal reasons. O’Brien stepped up to play the lead role for Werribee, making 67 off 99 balls. A patient knock was required from the skipper and he was up for the challenge. “It as a big ground out there, they put their fields in pretty good angles and there was not a lot of pace on the ball, so it was tough to hit the boundaries,” O’Brien said. “There was a lot of ones and twos and threes in there, which probably showed because I’m not real fit at the moment and started to cramp up at the end. When I started to go, I ended up picking a bloke out on the fence.” After O’Brien had set down the platform, it was over to Werribee’s middle order. Having finished the season 17 points behind the Roys, the Centurions will go into the game as underdogs. “They’re not fussed with who they play in the finals,” Johnson said. “The side is really good, they’re happy with the way they’re playing … they’re excited and looking forward to playing Glenroy.” In division 3, Point Cook has qualified for the finals in second spot. Point Cook has advanced to the FFA Cup third round after a gutsy 2-0 win away to Riversdale on Sunday night. The Jets played for 80 minutes with 10 men, but that did not stop Zac Osborne from scoring a decisive double. Point Cook will host state league 2 south-east side Old Scotch at Saltwater Reserve in the next round this weekend. It was an otherwise rough weekend for local sides. West Point was eliminated after a 1-0 defeat away to Kings Domain, Hoppers Crossing was pipped 2-1 by Hume United and Truganina Hornets lost 2-1 to North Melbourne Athletic.

Baseball

Weribee Ginats have suffered semi-final heartbreak again in Baseball Victoria summer league division 2. The Giants bowed out in a cruel manner, losing 19-18 in an incredible game two of the best-of-three series against the Newport Rams. The Giants fought back from 11 runs down with 15 unanswered runs, but could not hold on to their lead as the Rams over-ran them. Newport gained automatic promotion and will meet Cheltenham in the grand final series, while Werribee is stuck in division 2 for another summer.

Bowls

Werribee pressed the survival button on the final day to keep its place in the Bowls Victoria division 1 for another season. The Bees avoided relegation after securing two rinks in an 88-67 loss to Essendon on Saturday. It was a close call for the Bees this summer – they finished just six points above the relegation zone. Meanwhile, Hoppers rounded out the division 2 season with a heat-out against Rosamond. The result did not impact on Hoppers, which was stuck in mid-table no matter the outcome.
