Top service saluted By Alesha Capone Well-deserving members of the Wyndham community have been recognised on the Australia Day honours list. Three residents – Wayne Deakes of Truganina, Vern Fettke of Werribee and Trish Vejby of Werribee – have been made officers of the Order of Australia (OAM). Mr Deakes is the state training co-ordinator of St John Ambulance Australia’s Victorian branch. He has been a member of St John since 1972, received a National Emergency Medal for his service during the Black Saturday bushfires and served as a bail justice for 26 years. “I think it is about giving back to the community that’s important,” Mr Deakes said. Mr Fettke, who works at the Homestead Financial Group in Werribee, said he mentored his staff with the motto: “We will be judged by our actions”. Mr Fettke – who has undertaken dozens of volunteer and fundraising roles – said he was brought up in a family in which helping others was viewed as a way of life. He is the chairman and founder of WEstjustice, which provides free legal help to people in the west. Among his many other achievements, Mr Fettke has served as a Wyndham Rotary Club director, Wyndham Chamber of Commerce president, Mambourin Enterprises chairman and Wyndham Community Foundation chairman. Ms Vejby said that both of her parents were volunteers – the George Nevitt Athletics Track in Altona is named in honour of her father. “I just felt very humbled to be nominated for an OAM – to me its second nature just to be able to help people,” she said. Ms Vejby spent six years on the board of Western Health and 16 years on the board of Manor Court Werribee Aged Care. She was founding chairperson of the Wyndham branch of the Royal Victorian Association of Honorary Justices and is a former member of Heritage Council of Victoria. Former Wyndham mayor Peter Ross was awarded an OAM medal for service to the Werribee community, including with the Committee for Werribee, Werribee Chamber of Commerce and Werribee Theatre Company. Laverton resident Colin Campbell, an MFB multicultural liaison officer in the west, received an Australian Fire Service Medal. Point Cook’s Elleni Bereded-Samuel was appointed a member of the Order of Australia (AM). She is the founder of the Horn of Africa Communities Network.

Youths sought after teens assaulted, robbed Police have released details of two youths they are seeking after two teenage boys were assaulted and robbed in Wyndham Vale on Sunday. A 14-year-old boy and his 17-year-old friend were attacked about 7.15pm at a bus stop near the Wyndham Vale train station by a group of up to 20 youths, police say. The 14-year-old’s phone, airpods and gold necklace were stolen by one of the youths. Both boys sustained minor injuries. Victoria Police Transit Inspector Andrew Gustke said that before they were robbed,
the boys boarded a bus at Pacific Werribee shopping centre. Inspector Gustke said the bus travelled through Manor Lakes, where some of the offenders are believed to have boarded the bus before it travelled to the train station. The father of one of the victims, Anthony Ferrari, told radio station 3AW that two Protective Services Officers did not intervene when his son was being robbed. “When I spoke to them [the PSOs] on the phone they said, ‘You have to understand there was only two of us and 20 or so of them’,” he said.
But Inspector Gustke said a member of the public had alerted PSOs who were patrolling Wyndham Vale railway station to the first robbery and assault. “Whilst talking to the first victim, it’s our understanding that the second robbery was taking place,” Inspector Gustke said. He said that occurred about 20 to 30 metres from where the PSOs were standing and they only became aware of the robbery when “a lot of yelling” started. He said the PSOs turned their attention to a larger group of youths, which split into smaller groups and fled.
Pitch attack stops game By Alesha Capone Wyndham Vale Cricket Club members are devastated after vandals poured oil on one of its pitches, rendering it unusable for several months. Liam Maloney was set to captain the club’s thirds on Saturday, January 19, when players arrived to find the pitch covered in oil. Mr Maloney described the act of vandalism as “disgusting”. “Oil was poured at both ends and the middle [of the pitch] in a vindictive attack,” he said. “Wyndham Vale, a very community-minded club, has now lost that strip for the rest of the year.” Mr Maloney said the oil had sunk into the soil below the grass, meaning it would be a long time before the turf could grow again. “Sport helps bring a community together and WVCC is a very junior oriented-club and this leaves us with less options,” he said. “This attacks at the core of the community by someone who most likely lives in that same community – we need help, not vandalism. “The financial burden to a struggling club can put a club back years.” Mr Maloney said the vandalism was “shattering” to ground staff “who pour their heart and soul into these pitches to get them up to a great standard week in and week out”. Wyndham city life acting director David Semmens, criticised the vandalism. “It’s disappointing when community facilities are damaged, especially when weekend sporting activities are directly affected,” he said. “The turf table has multiple lanes, and though the damaged lane will be out of action for the remainder of this season, others can be used for the remaining home matches. “Council will undertake remediation works at the end of the cricket season to ensure there are no long-term effects to the sports ground.”

The Bakers Delight at Pacific Werribee is scheduled to shut down next month, but the company says it hopes it can negotiate to keep the store open. A spokesperson for the company said while the Pacific Werribee (formerly known as Werribee Plaza) store “… has been a successful and popular bakery for a very long time, it is scheduled to close when the current lease expires on 3 February”. “Despite some lengthy negotiations with the landlord, the terms being offered as part of a new lease agreement would make it extremely difficult to run a profitable business, so we have reluctantly opted to close down,” he said. But the spokesperson said there was still a ray of hope. “The good news is that the lease negotiations remain open and we are still hopeful that a successful outcome may be reached before the deadline,” he said. “In the meantime, we would like to thank the many customers who have supported Bakers Delight Werribee Plaza over the past seven years and we hope they will continue to be delighted by our products and service at our Werribee Central bakery.” Since news of the store’s potential shutdown was posted on the “Thumbs Up Thumbs Down. Werribee & Surrounds!” Facebook page, residents have been lamenting the impending closure in the comments’ section. Karen wrote: “I couldn’t imagine the centre without Bakers Delight, has been there for many, many years,” while Tara posted, ‘Omg! No way devastated!” and Susie wrote, “Geez that’s a shame”.

One of the offenders is described as being African in appearance, aged between 14-16 years old, of a slim build and being about 160 centimetres tall. He was wearing a blue-and-red striped top, blue denim shorts, gold-coloured shoes and a diamond stud in his left ear. T
he beginning of another school year means we can get some routine back into day-to-day life, stop ignoring school speed zones and once again enjoy the artistry that is parking in a school yard. TV news and the daily newspapers will be full of tearful preps and their parents, twins, triplets and quadruplets making their debut into the scholastic world and will be celebrated, as they should be. There won’t be film, though, of the multitude of kids who dread the return to the classroom for a variety of reasons. The year 7s making the transition from biggest kids in the jungle to the smallest is quite a culture shock. The teen years bring personal challenges that school tends to magnify as puberty kicks in. Then there are the personality changes. Yes, contrary to parental belief, teenagers do have personalities. They just dispense them when and how they choose. Peer group pressure to fit in, be popular, look right, talk right, be active on social media, watch the right TV shows, listen to the right music, is all consuming.
Bullying now takes innumerable forms but its effect is still the same as it was 10, 20 or 30 years ago. It scars for life. Schools are big business and the KPIs revolve around academic excellence. Student recruiting is rivalling the AFL. School advertisements regularly appear in papers, magazines, online sites, highway billboards, bus stops, radio and TV. Fees are substantial and parents are shopping around to get the best they can for their children. Which is their right. The question parents constantly ask themselves and agonise over is – what is best for their son or daughter? Everyone is different. Personally I value the lessons you learn about life ahead of most of the textbook stuff, so the academic credentials of a school are not of paramount importance. How the school community is run and how everyone is treated would always be top of my criteria. There are all sorts of smarts in the world but being happy, feeling safe and being a decent human being rate higher for me than any ATAR score. â– â–

A site has been earmarked for the construction of a $6.6 million early learning centre at the future Windermere estate in Mambourin. Named Colours Early Learning, the centre – to be built at the corner of Callaway Street and Ingalls Road – will have the capacity to hold 134 Certificate children. Police are seeking assistance to identify a man after an alleged burglary at a laundromat in Werribee on September 20 last year. About 3.35am, a man gained access to the Bridge Street business before allegedly forcing open a cash machine and stealing money. Truganina trash house By Alesha Capone Wyndham council says that it will investigate an abandoned house in Truganina that has been trashed, graffitied and has become a dumping ground for rubbish. The house, located at the corner of Dohertys and Woods roads, is near a sports ground, a pony club and the Truganina Cemetery. The house’s yard has piles of rubbish, discarded furniture, a piano and mattresses scattered across it. The building itself has sustained plenty of damage, including smashed windows and graffiti on its exterior.

Although there is a tall wire fence around part of the property, the driveway remains open. The site’s owner, who asked not to be named, said the property had “become pretty troublesome” with trespassers cutting the wire fence to access the site. He said that both he and security personnel had visited the site “numerous times”. “We’re certainly done everything we can to secure the site since we purchased it,” he said. When Star Weekly visited the property two weeks ago there was a for sale sign out the front which stated there were plans approved to build a takeaway outlet and petrol station on the site. However the property owner this week was uncertain about its future. Wyndham city operations director Stephen Thorpe said the council was always concerned

Preparatory work has started at the site of the youth detention centre in Cherry Creek before construction of the $288.7 million facility officially begins. Building work at the site, located off Little River Road, is scheduled to begin in February. Construction of the youth justice precinct is set to be completed by December next year, with the centre expected to become operational 2021. The Cherry Creek Youth Justice Centre will include 224 beds for remanded and sentenced youths, a 12-bed mental health unit and an “intensive supervision unit” of at least eight beds. The centre will house offenders aged between 10 and 21 years old. Some inmates from the Parkville youth detention centre will be transferred to the Cherry Creek centre once it opens. The facility will also have a school, vocational education training and horticulture and hospitality programs. Plans for the youth detention centre, released last year, outlined that the centre would have “a humane system of detention by seeking to normalise the lives of young people consistent with community standards”. The centre would have “an environment that is normal and as non-institutional as possible” and involve young inmate’s families and the community in their rehabilitation, the plans stated.

Tarneit upgrade nears finish line By Alesha Capone The end of the Tarneit Road upgrade is almost in sight. The $6 million upgrade, near the Hogans Road intersection, was originally scheduled to be finished by October, 2017. However, the project deadline was extended by more than 12 months due to changes to underground gas, electricity and water services which interfered with the contractor’s ability to carry out the works.

Wyndham council’s director of city operations, Stephen Thorpe last week said that asphalting works, carried out between January 14 to 16, had been completed. “We are on track for works to conclude in April,” he said.
“Next on the schedule is electrical, landscaping and footpath works, which will have little or no impact on traffic. “Following this, the only major works that remain are the traffic signals, which will be completed by VicRoads and Powercor.” In October last year, the council posted on its Facebook page, apologising to residents for the lengthy delay in the upgrade’s completion. “Motorists have been rightly frustrated by the ongoing delays and our dissatisfaction
continues to be conveyed to the contractor,” the post read. “Whilst the project is complex, there is no reasonable excuse for the contractor to not have completed the works. “It’s fair to say we are extremely disappointed at how long it has taken.” When the Tarneit Road upgrade is finished, it will include an extra lane added in each direction between Hogans Road and Caraleena Drive and traffic lights at the Good News Lutheran College entrance.
Bowls for everyone Members of the Werribee Bowls Club are on a mission to share their sport with as many people as possible. Community bowls co-ordinator Rhonda Edwards said the club would host a six-week competition aimed at “non-bowlers” from Wednesday, February 6. She said that the Community Bowls Challenge was designed for colleagues, friends, community groups, families and friends of all ages. In addition, the club will hold free junior development sessions for children aged under 18 from Friday, February 15. Other progams at the club include Bowling with Babies program; Girls on the Green initiative and barefoot bowls. “We are also working with Wyndham council to engage with multicultural groups,” Ms Edwards said. “We use our Junior Jack Attack bowls to visit community hubs and to introduce bowls as a recreational activity
to multicultural people who may never have experienced bowls in their country of origin. “These soft bowls and their games are also used for primary schools and provide a fun activity for the disabled.” Last year the club was named runner-up in the Bowls Australia Bowls Club of the Year awards. The club is up for another award this year, the Community Sporting Club of the Year at The Victorian Sport Awards, to be held on February 20. Poor form on kids in hot cars By Alesha Capone Paramedics rescued 79 unattended children from hot cars in Wyndham in a 12-month period. Ambulance officers responded to the call-outs from September, 2017, to August last year. In that time, out of all Victoria’s municipalities, Wyndham recorded the second-highest number of calls for children left in cars. Casey, in the south-east, topped the list with 113 call-outs. Whittlesea was third with 69 call-outs, Greater Geelong next with 60 call-outs and Hume fifth with 60 call-outs. Elsewhere in the west, paramedics responded to 49 call-outs in Brimbank, 48 in Melton, 29 in Maribyrnong and 24 in Hobsons Bay. The figures were released recently as the state government, acting chief health officer Brett Sutton, Ambulance Victoria and the Bureau of Meteorology teamed up to launch the “Never Leave Kids in Cars” campaign. The campaign warns that leaving children alone in cars in warmer weather can place them at risk of heatstroke, dehydration and organ damage. Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said that the temperature inside a car could double in just minutes in extreme conditions and that a child’s body temperature could rise three to five times faster than the body temperature of an adult. “Hot cars can kill – even if you’ll only be a couple of minutes, you should never leave kids unattended in cars,” she said. Dr Sutton said heat exhaustion and heat stroke could affect anyone. “That is why, as a community, we need to look out for one another and check on your neighbours on hot days,” he said.
TV itinerary for Tarneit team A Tarneit husband-and-wife will star in Channel Nine’s Travel Guides series when it hits screens next month. Deepesh and Sage, who married in 2017, will appear in the show’s third season. Deepesh works as an IT manager at a blood bank and Sage is a childcare worker. During Travel Guides, they will join four other groups of travellers. All five groups will go on the same week-long holiday, during which they will review the cuisine, accommodation and attractions in destinations including Europe, India and South America. Deepesh and Sage said they spent about four months filming the show last year. “It took a bit getting used to the microphones and the cameras, especially on the very first trip, but as time passes by you get used to things and just become comfortable and at ease,” Sage said. They said their family and friends were excited about seeing them on television. “You would not believe – one of my workmates wants to be my manager for any of my future assignments,” Deepesh said. “My workmates want to project the repeat telecasts on the big screen in our office.” The first episode of Travel Guides’ new season will be screened on Tuesday, February 5. Tarneit turns on to solar power By Alesha Capone Tarneit residents are proving to be leaders when it comes to installing solar panels. Almost 7000 Victorian households, including 212 Tarneit homes, have installed solar panels since the state government launched its Solar Homes program in August last year. Growth suburbs across Melbourne accounted for a big number of solar panel installations, including Clyde North with 161 installations, Craigieburn with 131, Truganina
with 123 and Cranbourne East with 98. The Solar Homes program has led to more than $3.4 million in rebates being paid to residents who install solar panels. Minister for Solar Homes Lily D’Ambrosio the Solar Homes program had proven to be tremendously popular and was helping Victorians to save hundreds of dollars a year on their energy bills. She said the program provided a rebate of up to $2225 to support households that installed solar panels.
From July 1 this year, Victorians will be able to install a solar panel system for half price and pay the rest of the cost back over a four year period. Those who purchase solar panels prior to July will be eligible to apply for a rebate. “We’re also expanding the Solar Homes to include rental properties, hot water systems and battery installations – giving Victorians a fair go and helping the environment,” Ms D’Ambrosio said. She said the government would invest
$82 million across 10 years to provide an additional 50,000 rebates for solar panels installed on rental homes. To be eligible for the rebate and interest-free loans, landlords will need to strike an agreement with their tenants to share installation costs. Renters will be required to make a 25 per cent contribution toward the cost of installation through a levy on their rent, spread over four years. Details: solar.vic.gov.au
Nailing new venture The unique wooden creations of carpenter and furniture-maker John ‘Padge’ Padgett will be among the wares for sale at the upcoming Werribee Makers Market. The markets, an initiative of the Wyndham Business and Tourism Association, will be held in Station Place on each Saturday of next month as part of Wyndham council’s Summer Pop-Up Park Program. Mr Padgett said this year marked 50 years since he began his carpentry apprenticeship. However he only started his small business, Padge’s Garage Creations, about two years ago at the suggestion of his fiancee Carmen. On weekends and after work, he makes handcrafted furniture, chopping and grazing boards, coffee tables, butcher’s blocks and fruit bowls in his Werribee garage. “I’ve always been doing things like that, but kept them for myself or handed down to family,” Mr Padgett said. He has crafted a toybox for grandson
Quinn and jewellery boxes for granddaugher Asha, with special plaques saying they were handmade “by Poppy Padge”. Mr Padgett said he never threw anything away, and was a fan of collecting old and recycled timber. “Some people look at a lump of wood and say it’s good for the fire, I say, ‘What can I make out of it?’” he said. “I like the characteristics of timber, no two pieces are the same.” The Werribee Makers Market is on from 10am-3pm on February 2, 9, 16 and 23. A new program at AquaPulse is aiming to prove it’s never too late to learn about water safety or lifesaving skills. A free Grey Medallion program – which will provide older adults with improved swimming skills, advice on dealing with emergency situations and water safety knowledge – will begin at the Hoppers Crossing sports centre next week. Western Leisure Services aquatics manager Chet Patel said the program was being offered in partnership with Wyndham council, Life Saving Victoria and Royal Life Saving Australia. “You are never too old to learn about water safety – the skills that are covered in this program could literally save a life,” he said. “The first person on the scene of an emergency
is most often a family member, so a useful part of this program for older people is learning to help themselves or others should they ever get into trouble in the water.” Eighty-one Australians aged 55 or older drowned in the 2017-18 financial year, according to the Royal Life Saving National Drowning Report. A pageant of dreams By Alesha Capone Tarneit’s Akuac Arik says she decided to enter a beauty pageant to develop her self-confidence and inspire other young women. Ms Arik, 22, will travel to Sydney for the Miss Sahara pageant, to be held on April 14. The pageant, sponsored by the Community Migrant Resource Centre in Parramatta, aims to celebrate the diversity of African women in Australia, build social cohesion and raise awareness of Africa’s different cultures. Ms Arik, who was born to South Sudanese parents, said the Miss Sahara event would be her first pageant, although she has done some modelling work in the past. She said she was inspired to enter after seeing videos of all the girls who took part in last year’s pageant on Instagram. “I’m looking forward to just having more confidence, getting up in front of all the people, meeting all the other girls and also the mentors,” she said. “I think they will have two mentors, including last year’s winner.” Ms Arik said she used to be fairly shy, but had grown in confidence during the past two years. She said that doing new things, such as Miss Sahara, helped to increase her confidence. “I want to inspire other young girls as well,” she said. Ms Arik hopes to do more work in the modelling field and is studying interior design.
Vandals strike school twice over holidays Police have interviewed a 13 year-boy in relation to two alleged break-ins at Alamanda College in Point Cook last month. Detectives from the Wyndham Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) said the Point Cook boy had been released, pending further inquiries. The CIU is investigating two break-ins which occurred at the college on December 14 and December 30. Police said they were still waiting to interview a second youth who was allegedly involved in one or both of the break-ins. During the incidents, furniture within school buildings was “tossed around”. Beverages were also tipped over the inside of school buildings and a fire extinguisher was set off. Star Weekly contacted the school but a college representative declined to comment. However, on January 19, the school’s official Facebook page posted that there had been “several break-in or vandalism attempts these last weeks”. Another post, the following day, said that the school had hired security guards in an effort to deter further break-ins. Alesha Capone

Library hit list a thriller By Alesha Capone The word in Wyndham is that thrillers, mysteries and crime novels are among the most popular books at the municipality’s libraries. Wyndham council has released a list of last year’s top 10 most borrowed books from its libraries. The Midnight Line by Lee Child, which follows the adventures of an ex-military policeman investigating the illegal opioid trade, placed first on the list, borrowed 269 times. Origin by Dan Brown, which explores themes of science and religion, placed second after

being borrowed 205 times. David Baldicci’s End Game – about a man and woman described as “two of the most lethal people alive” who “take out those who plot violence and mass destruction against the United States” – came in third, being borrowed 171 times. Rounding out the top five were Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty (borrowed 167 times) and another Lee Child book, Night School (borrowed 149 times). Wyndham learning city portfolio holder Josh Gilligan said he was delighted to see the community making the most of Wyndham’s five libraries.
“If you’re looking for a new book to read then definitely check out the top 10 list of books borrowed from Wyndham libraries last year,” he said. “It was great to see Aussie authors Liane Moriarty and Jane Harper feature in this list – certainly inspiring for our own local writers.” Cr Gilligan said that apart from books, Wyndham’s libraries offered e-books, digital borrowing technology, special events, study spaces and children’s activities. Mayoral Column It’s been a busy week at Wyndham! On Wednesday morning I joined other Mayors from the Interface Council Group, made up of Melbourne’s Growth Councils, to meet with the Minister for Local Government Adem Somyurek. It was great to get together and discuss the flow-on effects of rapid population growth, specifically the infrastructure challenges that come with it. We also discussed the importance of the Growing Suburbs Fund, and the need for integrated planning across the State Government, in partnership with Council. The Minister asked us to provide feedback on the review into the Local Government Act. Saturday was a big day, as we celebrated 120 Wyndham residents officially becoming Australian citizens at our citizenship ceremony. These new citizens come from 26 different countries, including Malaysia, Lebanon, Philippines, India, and Sri Lanka. We hold these ceremonies regularly, and they’re one of my favourite parts of my job. On Saturday evening I headed over to the Werribee City Centre for the Australia Day event. Green light for park upgrades By Alesha Capone Wyndham council will spend $11.1 million to upgrade hundreds of parks during the next three years. The council last week announced the funding for its Wyndham Parks 2021 Project, to improve 200 parks across the municipality. Mayor Mia Shaw said the project would make parks more accessible, safe and welcoming. “As part of this exciting project, council has so far delivered 61 new park benches and 15 drink fountains, 15 Powercor boxes have been

painted with lively artworks, 20 play spaces upgraded including rubber under surfacing to swings and slides, more than 10,000 new plants and 1500 new trees planted and 2.3 kilometres of new concrete paths to improve accessibility,” Cr Shaw said. “For example, at Tyrone Street Recreational
Reserve in Werribee, the entire play space has been upgraded, new park benches have been installed, as well as a new footpath and nature play space.” Cr Shaw said that Annandale Mews Park in Point Cook had received a new rotunda and benches, plus additional garden beds and trees. “Over in Hoppers Crossing, a new habitat garden, trees, footpath and bench seating have been installed at Alsace Avenue Walkway,” she said. “Thames Boulevard Recreational Reserve in Tarneit is now a lot greener with more than 60
trees planted and new gardens, not to mention it’s a lot safer with rubber floor installed under the playground, and the new bench seating. “It’s pretty exciting to see the progress so far, but we’re definitely not done yet, and we look forward to upgrading many more.” Other parks in the project are Penshurst Avenue Recreational Reserve in Williams Landing; Wyndham Vale North Recreational Reserve; Lollypop Creek Nature Reserve; and Cuthbert Avenue Reserve and Savanna Parade Recreational Reserve in Truganina. Penny plenty busy Penny definitely deserves a round of a-paws. The former racing greyhound these days works as a therapy dog at the Sunshine Hospital Adult Acute Psychiatric Unit (SAAPU). Penny also donates blood at the U-Vet Werribee Melbourne Animal Hospital. She even has her own Instagram account – @misspennyblack. Owner Mel Brown, said that she and her partner fell in love with Penny after they met her three years ago through the Greyhound Adoption Program, run by Greyhound Racing Victoria. Ms Brown said that she and Penny began volunteering at the SAAPU about 18 months ago as part of a Delta Therapy Dogs program. “I wanted to volunteer in my community,” she said. “I’d heard about therapy dogs in the past and thought, ‘How great would it be to volunteer with my dog?’ ”

At the SAPPU, patients can pat Penny, talk to her and give her treats for performing tricks. “I think there are some patients who connect with her more and some who you can see instantly calm down when they see her and pat her,” Ms Brown said. She encouraged people to adopt greyhounds and said that myths about greyhounds – such as they could be aggressive and need lots of exercise – were misconceptions. “Penny loves the park, loves getting out and about, and loves meeting new people, and she’s super-friendly,” she said. Child actor’s debut role By Alesha Capone Young Point Cook actor Lorcan has appeared in his first-ever short film. The 10 year-old stars in a seven-minute long movie called Dad’s Guide to Engaging with Women. The movie was made by students from RMIT University’s School of Media and Communication, to enter in festivals and competitions.
The film is also available to watch on YouTube, where it has racked up more than 360 views. Lorcan auditioned for the movie at the suggestion of his acting teacher, Adam Turnbull, who runs ATA Acting Studio. Lorcan said that Mr Turnbull suggested him for the role of a younger version of the main character in Dad’s Guide to Engaging with Women, because he looked a lot like the actor playing the part.
Lorcan said that he hoped to become a professional actor in the future. “I saw actors on television and I saw some behind-the-scenes videos, and it looked like fun,” he said. “You get to meet new people and do lots of different things.” His advice for other young actors is to immerse themselves in a scene to avoid getting nervous. “Forget anyone is watching you and go with the scene, feel like it’s something you are doing in real life,” he said.

An extension to Manor Lakes Central shopping centre is set to include 26 new speciality stores and a gym. Tender applications for stage two work at the Ballan Road centre closed last month. A description of the tender documents says that in addition to the 26 new speciality tenancies and gym, the extension will include a new large-format national retailer. About 506 new carparks will also be constructed at the centre, bringing the total number of vehicle spaces available to about 860. The plans include road and infrastructure work at Ballan Road to create a signalised intersection, along with work at Manor Lakes Boulevard to create an intersection leading into the centre. Planned landscaping includes internal and external play areas, plus the provision of a shared path from the centre to Wyndham Vale train station. In 2017, Star Weekly reported that the then-proposed extension of the shopping centre would see it triple in size from 6443 square metres to about 18,868 square metres. The centre is owned by Ranfurlie Developments, the retail and commercial arm of Dennis Family Corporation. At the time, Ranfurlie Developments chief executive Mark Wilson said stage two was expected to generate about 386 new full-time and part-time jobs. Alesha Capone

MY WYNDHAM Jan Hudson, 79, is a frequent visitor to the gymnasium and pool at Stockland’s Tarneit Skies Retirement Village where she does boxing, weightlifting and aquarobics. She speaks with Alesha Capone. What was your job before you retired? I worked as a general medical nurse for 20 years until 1977. I then transferred into midwifery and gynaecology until retiring in 2005. How long have you lived in Tarneit? We moved 13 years ago. Before that, we lived in Altona for 42 years. How has Tarneit changed across the years? When we moved into the village, there were farms across the road, which have now been replaced with housing. We have two new sporting ovals, tennis courts and a community barbecue area nearby too. Tarneit has become a very multicultural area too, which makes it an interesting place to live. We now have a direct link to Warrnambool. We think Tarneit is a great place for retirees. It has everything we need without too much hustle and bustle.
I’ve always been an active person. In our younger years, my husband and I played badminton and squash. Exercising is a great way to have some time to myself to relax and unwind. It keeps me young. I’ll stay active for as long as I’m able. What is your favourite sport or exercise activity?

I’ve been taking the aquarobics classes in the village’s swimming pool for some time now but have recently started enjoying boxing. I’ve got a personalised exercise plan to help me build my upper body strength and maintain

The Local Government Department has announced an inquiry into matters relating to the boundaries of six western municipalities including Werribee. The inquiry will include hearings at each of the affected municipalities which will be open to the public and to which the public may make submissions.
Werribee resident Mr Eddie Henderson was concerned when he read a headline in last Friday’s daily press, “JAPAN IN FOR IT’S CHOP”. It reported that a Japanese trading giant had snared 40 per cent of Melbourne’s most famous meat producer, R.J. Gilbertson, in a shock $18 million deal.
Point Cook Flying Club’s pilot training and flight operations have been taken over by the Royal Victorian Aero Club. The change will substantially upgrade the Point Cook club’s profile for flight training and competition flying.
A grieving son believes a shortage of ambulances may have contributed to his mother’s death, after she suffered a heart attack last year. Werribee resident Neville White said that on November 23, his 81-year-old mother, Jean, had just finished a game at the Werribee plaza Bingo Centre in Hoppers Crossing with her granddaughter, Shae.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir goes big on small servings In handful of months, Consider The Sauce will turn nine. I long ago realised that aspiring to cover everything that is happening – and being eaten – across the west is the stuff of nervous breakdown. So we go our merry way – and enjoy immensely, and participate in, the broader conversations. For instance, very few of the bars that have bloomed in the inner west in the past few years have received coverage here. And it’s for that reason that Slider Diner was not really on our radar. Just another burger joint, hey? But visit it we do when our Seddon eating destination of choice turns out to be closed. That’s a fine outcome, for we enjoy Slider Diner. Located in the premises formerly occupied by Ajitoya, the place is done out in bright retro diner style. And the slider angle? Well, that seems to be all about the availability of half-size burgers in a menu dedicated to classy fast food – with a few twists along the way. Usually, half portions cost significantly more than half the full price. So Slider Diner deserves much kudos for the fact its “sliders” cost precisely half of their full-portion equivalents – and they’re generous to boot! This means an individual customer can enjoy some diversity without paying a price in terms of quantity or money.
SLIDER DINER Address: 82 Charles Street, Seddon Bennie is well pleased with slider cheeseburger ($7) and kim cheezy ($7) with crunchy fried chicken, kim chi slaw, smoked cheddar and gochujang sauce (Korean red chilli sauce). My fish burger ($15, not available in half size) is damn fine. The deep-fried rockling fillet, juicy and flavoursome and meltingly tender, is accompanied by lemon dill mayo, lettuce and just the right quantity of finely sliced pickled onion. We are utterly incapable of ordering the likes of burgers or gyros without also summoning chips, but all we want is a taste, really. So we wish more places would offer said chips in appropriately sized – and priced – portions. Slider Diner does just that for $5.50 – though these are just OK. Will we return to Slider Diner? Yes – quite possibly to build a meal out of sides such as chicken wings, popcorn chicken, Tex-Mex corn cob, truffled mac ‘n’ cheese and pulled pork doughnuts. Summer of fun in Werribee City Centre From music concerts and outdoor cinema to free fitness classes and kids workshops, Werribee City Centre’s Pop-Up Park is buzzing this summer. Karen Ng and Cliff Yeo, with 22 years combined experience as owners of childcare centres, have opened Prodigy Early Learning in Wyndham Vale. The spanking new facility provides for 106 placements for children aged from six weeks to six years, operating out of six rooms between 7am and 7pm. Centre director Lauree Watson is also an old hand at childcare centre management, with 22 years experience under her belt. She explains what Prodigy has to offer. “We have a natural, home-like environment for children to feel relaxed and secure, and plenty of room for them to learn and play indoors and out,” Lauree says. “Our team of qualified educators provide a specialised kindergarten and school-readiness program, exposure to a second language such as Chinese and the chance to participate in yoga. “We follow the learn-through-play approach, but add extra components to a child’s learning, with regular incursions and excursions to enrich education. And we’re passionate about having our service governed by the National Quality Framework. “In our babies’ rooms, we use the SIDS safe-sleep approach and follow parental and primary carers’ guidelines. And nutritious balanced meals, approved by Nutrition Australia, are prepared fresh every day by our qualified cook.” Karen, Cliff and Lauree welcome families to take an active role by signing up to park-story, which allows them to see what children are learning throughout the day. “We also share a strong belief in an orientation process. We love our children to have a sense of belonging before they start with us,” Karen says. “And we program our education to meet children’s individual abilities and needs.” Fees are $106 a day before the childcare subsidy (CCS) and full-time fees are $500 before CCS. The fees include breakfast, morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea and, for children awaiting a later pick-up, a late snack as well. FB: How would you rate yourself as a cook? ME: Oh, pretty ordinary. I’m OK just for a few things. I sort of went through I stage where I didn’t cook for years and years. Obviously Mum cooked for me all my life, basically. FB: What is your signature dish? ME: It’s probably not a signature meal, but for dinner – last minute – it’d just be a chicken stir fry. Easy. Bang. I’m pretty good at those at the moment. I (also) like to throw a bit of fish on and veggies. That sort of thing. Sweet potato. Some brown rice. FB: What did you grow up eating? ME: Pretty much rubbish, really, when you think about it. I mean, I thought I was eating alright. Before footy and that, you’d have your big bowl of pasta and all that, which was standard. I used to have plenty of cola and Twisties, that sort of thing … fish and chips. FB: Do you have a sweet tooth? ME: I love lollies. I’m a chocoholic. Lindt Balls. Kit Kats. Violet Crumble. Blocks of chocolate. You’ve got to love your Easter eggs too. Just anything, really.
Keto diet guru Scott Gooding was our first guest of 2019 on the Food Bytes podcast and what an interesting discussion we had. The low-carb, keto of way of life has taken Australia by storm, and Scott’s latest book - The Keto Diet Cookbook - is packed full of fresh, beautiful and (importantly) simple low-carb recipes, one of which I just have to share here. You may have heard of the dessert called Eton Mess (layers of cream, crushed meringue fruit). But I’ll bet you haven’t heard of Scott Gooding’s Mess! As Scott himself says: “We eat with our eyes, I know, and presentation is everything, BUT throw that out the window for now. This is my version of a little treat after dinner. It’s not that easy on the eye, but it hits the spot taste-wise!” Personally, I think it looks pretty darn good! And it could not be simpler to throw together. Just combine the following in a bowl: ¼ cup frozen blueberries, 1 tablespoon of peanut butter or a nut butter of your choice, 1 tablespoon of shredded coconut, 1-2 tablespoons of coconut cream, 1 tablespoon of pepitas, 1 tablespoon of sunflower seeds and 1 tablespoon of MCT oil (optional). SPORT Seabrook stares relegation in the face Seabrook was left to lick its wounds after being totally outplayed on the first day of its two-day battle with West Newport in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 3 at Loft Reserve on Saturday. The Saints are mired in a relegation fight and need points to leap out of the bottom two, but they showed no signs of life and surrendered meekly to be all out for 74 in 47.4 hellish overs. West Newport not only secured the first innings points on day one, but built a handy 27-run lead, which they will be looking to add to in search of an outright result. While the first day hurt Seabrook, it too will be hoping for a miraculous turnaround in the match on second innings. An outright result would go some way to curing the Saints ills, though it would be a long shot. After the batsmen failed, Walgama Eranga used the ball to earn some respectability back for Seabrook. The Saints’ second change bowler finished with 2-20 off nine overs. At the upper end of the ladder, Point Cook is well placed to make it three wins in a row against Williamstown Imperials.
The Warriors have been set a target of 186, which is well within their capabilities. James Doolan (3-40) and Brett Talbot (3-21) were standouts with the ball for Point Cook. Wyndham Vale is still eagerly pursuing a finals berth in division 4. The Falcons are nine points out of the top four after a 78-run belting of Williamstown Congs at J.T. Grey Reserve. Lachlan King was magnificent for the Falcons, carving out 103, including 12 fours, as his side made 9-194 off its maximum 40 overs. Aaron Graham (2-21), Lance Macdougall (2-21) and David Buchanan (2-11) were lethal with the ball for the Falcons, who skittled the Congs for 116. Wyndham Vale will travel to Caroline Springs for another one-day game on Saturday. In division 2, Werribee Centrals face Newport-Digman, chasing 297 for victory.

Werribee locks in key trio By Lance Jenkinson If you kicked 16 goals for Werribee in 2018, chances are you earned a new VFL contract last week. Werribee announced the re-signings of Matt Munro, Kye Declase and Joel Bennett – three forwards who finished with 16 goals last season. With leading goalkicker Andrew Hooper retiring and star forward Josh Corbett signed by the Gold Coast Suns, it was hugely important for Werribee to lock in the trio of 16-goalers from last season, ensuring that much of its firepower would be retained. Munro, 23, will be Werribee’s most experienced player inside 50 this season. The small forward has played 53 games and kicked 44 goals since arriving at Watton Street in 2015. It is not only his conversion that is crucial, but also his defensive pressure and score assists. Werribee football operations manager Stuart Balloch is happy with the retention of Munro. “Matt has shown himself to be very handy in front of goal over the last couple of seasons, but his ability to help others find the goals was where he was really crucial for us last year,” he said. “He’s now got more than 50 VFL games under his belt and is among the more senior players in our group, so we’ll be looking for him to go to another level and continue to be really important for us in that small forward role.” It will be Declase’s second season at Werribee. He showed promise in his 12 games, averaging 1.33 goals a game, but was hampered by a nagging back injury. A four-goal haul against Williamstown in round three showed his potential. “Kye is a beautiful kick for goal and his combination of height and mobility means he also has the versatility to flip out on to the wing,,” Balloch said. “There’s no doubt his second half of the season wasn’t quite where he would have liked it to be, but he has shown he can be a real threat for us, so we’re really eager to see how he can progress as he continues to develop in that forward role.” Werribee has also re-signed ruckman Nick Nott and defender Ben McNamara. Nott was struck down by a season-ending knee injury in round five, but not before signalling his bright future at the club. Balloch is optimistic Nott will bounce back from his setback.

“For Nick’s season to end the way it did last year was really disappointing,” he said. “But his application to his rehabilitation and attitude throughout has been first class. “We’re hopeful he can return bigger and better than before and continue to provide good support for the likes of Jack Berry in that ruck/forward role.” McNamara spent most of his 2018 season with St Joseph’s, where he won a premiership.
The youngster did get a chance to debut for Werribee and played four impressive games late in the season. “Ben faced a big challenge last year in stepping up from local footy, but he showed himself to be a capable VFL player when given an opportunity late in the season,” Balloch said. “We’re developing some real depth with our defensive set-up and we think Ben will again have a role to play for us there.”

A-League club gets busy recruiting coaches and those with community values,” he said. Hutchinson has spent the past two seasons in the Seattle Sounders system. But returning to Melbourne was an easy choice for the 39-year-old. He is ready to get to work for the new Tarneit-based club. “I’m a passionate Victorian who loves football and wants success,” Hutchinson said. “The community in Western Melbourne want hard workers who are committed to the club 100 per cent every day. The hard work starts now.” Hutchinson was a successful player in his own right. He got his start with the Gippsland Falcons in the National Soccer League before moving to the Central Coast Mariners in the A-League,
becoming a fan favourite and playing more than 200 games, including a championship in 2011-12. Hutchinson is hoping to translate some of what he learnt in Seattle and during his playing days to his new role. “Hopefully, my experience in Seattle, who have been one of the success stories off the pitch in the Major League Soccer, and my A-League experience will help the club,” Hutchinson said. “And, I must say, building our own privately funded football-only stadium in Tarneit is a fantastic idea that will bring the community and club together. “I believe in the club and I believe in the values of the west.” Lance Jenkinson
Tiger tension before win By Lance Jenkinson Werribee was on high alert throughout Malvern’s run chase at the Malvern Cricket Ground on Saturday. Even if it appeared as though the Tigers were comfortably defending their total of 9-252, it was never a sure thing until the 10th wicket fell in a 62-run victory in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south-west group. Tigers captain Tim O’Brien was relieved to secure the win that moves his side up to second on the ladder. “With the ground being so small, it only takes a couple of good overs to get them back in the game,” he said. “It was very important for us to keep on taking wickets because it’s not the sort of ground you want to be bowling late against a team with wickets in hand.” The Tigers were not at their effervescent best, having lulls from time to time throughout the day. O’Brien was concerned that his side was too relaxed. “We probably didn’t come out after tea as we would’ve liked,” he said. “Maybe it was a little bit of complacency, but they had a bit more urgency with the bat and we thought we didn’t have that in the field.” Concerns peaked for Werribee late in the day. At 7-117, the Tigers had thoughts of wrapping up the tail quickly and heading home for Australia Day celebrations. But Malvern’s lower order dug in, particularly Michael McKenna (57) and Alexander Ross (35), who made it a nervous end to the day for Werribee. “They had a couple of tailenders that batted pretty well,” O’Brien said. “It was a pretty flat wicket and the ground is quite small … so if you got yourself in, you can do some damage. “They needed to get about nine an over at that stage, so we just needed to reduce the runs and we did that.” New ball operators Jonathan Burton (3-38 off 21 overs) and Brad Apps (3-39 off 19) snared three wickets apiece for Werribee. Burton’s first spell had the Tigers roaring early in the day as he snared the scalps of both openers. Apps ripped through the middle order. “The quicks did the job pretty well before tea,” O’Brien said. “They bowled full and straight and to the field and they were hard to score off.” Werribee used only four bowlers for the day. O’Brien did not bowl as he is recovering from a shoulder niggle, while Adam Alifraco was not needed. “We only wanted to bowl spin from one end and Mick Kelly was going pretty well,” O’Brien said. Devils sign up fresh talent Werribee Devils have lured talented young point guard Sarah Elsworthy to the fold for its Big V basketball women’s state championship team. Elsworthy put pen to paper on a deal for the 2019 season last week. The 20-year-old has spent the past three seasons with Adelaide Lightning in the Women’s National Basketball League. The Western Melbourne Group, the successful bidder for an A-League licence, has announced the appointments of senior assistant coaches John Hutchinson and John Anastasiadis. Juke stays true to breeding By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring The Nissan Juke, with its jagged body lines, numerous cut-outs and contrasting highlights, presents the perfect example of what could be seen as automotive architectural anarchy. Even so, with the resulting sharp appearance, there’s no reason the compact sports utility vehicle should not join its more traditional rivals and enjoy a mid-cycle makeover. Already with an enthusiastic fan base, the Juke in ST and Ti-S six-speed manual and Ti-S CVT automatic variants, Nissan is aiming to grab a thicker slice of the market with modified exterior styling, plus three myJuke personalisation packs, featuring colour highlights on the front and rear bumper, alloy wheel inserts and mirror caps. Arctic White and Vivid Blue have been added to the seven-strong list of body colours. The Juke comes with a choice of two turbocharged petrol engines – 1.2 or 1.6 litre – the ST mated with a six-speed manual, Ti-S with this or a continuously variable transmission with manual mode, the latter adding all-wheel drive. Prices start at $23,490, plus on-road costs, for the ST and end up at $33,840 for the Ti-S CVT, the latter being the test car. Styling The 2018 Juke puts on a new face with a Nissan hallmark V-Motion shape featuring a darker chromed grille, and headlights, tail lights and indicators featuring a smoked finish. LED fog lamps are now fitted across the range. Interior The exterior colours are complemented by the interior through centre console, side vent and door panel finishes, and meter hood stitching,

Driving Built in Britain, a right-hand drive market like Australia, the Nissan Juke is an enigma with its left-hand drive-type steering column stalks for indicators and wipers, and hand brake on the left of the centre console. The cabin is far from cramped and the rear gate lifts well out of the way for easy loading.
