Western Melbourne director of football Steve Horvat thanked the group’s partner, Wyndham council, for its hard work and commitment to the bid. The bid also had the support of Brimbank, Maribyrnong and Melton councils. “[The council’s] vision from day one in identifying our future home has been a cornerstone of our bid,” Mr Horvat said. “Most of all, we thank the people of western Melbourne for daring to dream and giving the bid team the energy and drive to make this happen. “Football is all about the fans and Western Melbourne will be fan-centric in everything we do.” As previously reported by Star Weekly, the Western Melbourne Group Weekly has already been chatting to possible marquee player recruits to ensure the new club has a strong player base. Mr Horvat said the Western Melbourne Group had started preliminary planning for building Wyndham Stadium and expected to turn soil on the project within 12 months.

Wyndham will be home to a new A-League soccer team after scoring one of two new Football Federation Australia expansion licences. The Western Melbourne Group and Macarthur-South West Sydney were given the green light following an FFA board meeting on Wednesday, December 12. The Western Melbourne Group is expected to make its debut in the 2019-20 A-League season and will train and compete at Geelong’s Kardinia Park while its home ground, the multimillion-dollar Wyndham Stadium, is under construction in Tarneit. The 15,000-seat stadium – which has been fully funded – will be built on Wyndham council-owned land at 1160 Sayers Road, Tarneit, and is expected to be ready for the opening round of the 2021-22 A-League season. It will include elite training pitches, sports medicine facilities and a gym. Residential and commercial development is planned for the surrounding area. FFA chief executive David Gallop said one of the key strengths of the Western Melbourne Group bid was its proposal to build Australia’s first soccer-owned and soccer-specific stadium. “The prospect of a facility owned by football for football will be a significant new milestone for the game in Australia,” Mr Gallop said. “Football-specific stadia have been extremely successful in league expansion in other parts of the world and we are excited by the prospect of such a facility in Melbourne.” FFA chairman Chris Nikou said the two bids chosen were located in some of the biggest growth corridors

Council knocks back Werribee childcare proposal A proposal to develop a childcare centre next to a heritage building in Werribee has been given the thumbs down by Wyndham council. The council has rejected a planning permit application to build a two-storey childcare centre at 223 Watton Street, on the same site as a bluestone building from 1866, which served as Werribee’s first shire offices before being sold to the Freemasons. said the plans would have resulted in the front of the former shire hall being almost obscured from public view, from Greaves Street. Council officers also submitted a report on the planning application, which stated the proposed development would “adversely

affect the significance of the heritage place”. Cr Tony Hooper said while he appreciated Wyndham needed more childcare providers, the application was “a clear example of wrong development in the wrong place”. “It is the professional view of our planning staff that the proposed development does not sufficiently respect the significance of the heritage place,” he said. Cr Kim McAliney said the proposal was “not consistent” with some heritage clauses and guidelines of the Wyndham planning scheme.

Arsonists set fire to park By Charlene Macaulay Bayview Park’s pirate ship playground has again been the target of arson, four years after it was destroyed by fire. Wyndham crime investigation unit detectives are investigating after offenders set fire to the wooden section of the playground’s slide some time before 3.30am on December 7. The damage has shut down the slide. No one was injured during the incident. Detectives are investigating whether the blaze is linked to two others that occurred at a playground in Presidents Park, Wyndham Vale, between midnight and 2.30am on November 24 and 27. Wyndham council city operations director Stephen Thorpe said the fire had caused $25,000 of damage, with the cost of repairs to be covered by insurance. Mr Thorpe said the council hoped to re-open the slide by mid-January. The rest of the playground remains open to the public. The fire comes four years after the original timber playground at the Point Cook park was destroyed in an arson attack. The playground was rebuilt and opened in December 2016 with a number of safety features aimed at preventing anti-social behaviour, including the use of fire-retardant wood. The rebuild had its fair share of controversy at the time, with locals protesting the council’s original plans to replace the pirate ship park with a steel “ghost ship” structure. The council agreed to rebuild the original pirate ship playground after an online petition bearing more than 2300 signatures and a pirate-themed protest at a council meeting. A Point Cook man has been fined nearly $2000 for the illegal dumping of mud on a vacant block of land. Environment Protection Authority (EPA) metro region manager Daniel Hunt said a member of the public spotted a truck dumping the muddy load on a block in a Point Cook estate in the early hours of September 19. Mr Hunt said EPA officers took samples of the mud and contacted the owner of the truck, who told them the dumping was an accident and the employee responsible no longer worked for him. There was no arrangement with the owner of the land, nor a licence for waste to be accepted on that land. The man was fined $1934. “The witness noted the truck’s registration number and called EPA. It made all the difference, we were able to trace the truck and contact the owner with comparative ease,” Mr Hunt said. “A load of slurry might not seem to be much of an environmental threat, but it is industrial waste, the site is someone’s block in a housing estate, and the danger with unlicensed dumping is that it could contain just about anything.” Mr Hunt said the EPA was considering compelling the owner of the truck to remove the mud and clean up the site. The mud, which was analysed, had no contaminants. The infringement comes four months after the EPA fined Campbellfield-based construction company Winslow Constructors $7929 for discharging sediment-laden water into a conservation zone near Davis Creek in Tarneit. A spokesman for the developers said they had worked with the council to address heritage design requirements for more than 18 months. Freemasons Victoria’s president of the board of general purposes Justin Stark, said the proposal was “very sympathetic of the heritage of the site”. Mr Stark said some of the funds earned by the childcare centre would have been used for the heritage hall’s maintenance.

ime to reflect on another year where my Tattslotto numbers did not come up, my footy team did not win a premiership and there still seems to be not enough hours in the day to get everything done. On the other hand, my family is healthy and happy, I didnâ€™t get hit by a bus and I live a pretty good life. On balance I would have to say it was a pretty good year. The frustrating thing is we are still banging on about the same issues. Traffic, over-stretched medical services, police numbers, poor integration of new residents, and a lack of commitment and accountability from many of our elected representatives. What makes any of us think these things will change? The youth detention centre issue saw the community galvanised for the first time since the toxic dump. It was good to see and it showed that when we want to, we can be a very powerful force. The outcome served the best interests of the majority of the community. Those that went into hiding during that crisis have it on their conscience forever and deservedly so. The announcement of the success of the

A-League bid by the Western Melbourne Group is reason to celebrate. It is also a timely opportunity for the City of Wyndham to boldly reposition itself as a city for the future. This new entity is more than just a team in the A-League. It is a passport to developing new and exciting ventures with global scope and potential. This requires people with vision, creativity, common sense, passion, respect for the area and the people who live in it. There are a lot of people in the west who have all of those qualities and I hope they get an opportunity to show what they can do. Frustration over Tarneit delays By Charlene Macaulay Wyndham council has admitted “there is no reasonable excuse” for lengthy and costly delays on the Tarneit Road upgrade. The $6 million project – which will include an extra lane in each direction between Hogans Road and Caraleena Drive, traffic lights at the Good News Lutheran College entrance, and a doubling in the size of the Tarneit and Hogans roads intersection – was originally slated for completion by October 2017, and has since

missed a number of revised deadlines. In a post on its Wyndham City Living Facebook page last week, the council said it had met with the contractor managing the upgrade earlier this month and was told that asphalting should be complete by the end of last week and the hardware for the traffic lights will be installed by mid-February. It is then up to VicRoads and Powercor to turn on the lights, which is expected to happen in April. “Motorists have been rightly frustrated by

the ongoing delays and our dissatisfaction continues to be conveyed to the contractor,” the post read. “Whilst the project is complex, there is no reasonable excuse for the contractor to not have completed the works. “It’s fair to say we are extremely disappointed at how long it has taken.” Wyndham council has said the delays will “result in additional costs” for the council, which have yet to be finalised. Meanwhile, construction on the $11.5 million Armstrong Road project, which

provides a connection between Greens and Blackforest roads, is now complete, with minor works such as public lighting and signal works being finalised before the new road is open to the public. Wyndham council mayor Mia Shaw said the sealing of Boundary Road between Derrimut Road and the Regional Rail Link overpass was on track for completion in March 2019, while the duplication of Forsyth Road between Old Geelong and Sayers roads will be ready by mid-2019.

Gifts with great spirit Two special deliveries will give families in need reasons to smile this Christmas. CDC Victoria last week dropped off a festively-decorated bus full of toys to the Salvation Army’s Wyndham Community Support Services, all of which had been donated by the company’s staff. The delivery included food and family essentials such as nappies. Michelle McKersey, from CDC Victoria, said the bus company had run a Christmas toy drive for the past four years and decided that the Salvos were a perfect fit for this year’s efforts. “We specifically wanted to engage our staff at Christmas time to get them to contribute toys and food to those that need it more than we do,” she said. Jane Kerbage, from the Salvation Army, said: “We’re so thankful to be able to give away stuff on behalf of people who have made the effort.” Meanwhile, three jewellery businesses have also joined forces to make Christmas more

enjoyable for families doing it tough. Prouds The Jewellers, Angus & Coote and Goldmark have donated $3000 of toys to the Salvation Army, including to the Werribee Salvos. The toys range from those suitable for babies to children aged 12. “Christmas is a time for giving and we really want to make a difference in the lives of young people who are vulnerable or less fortunate,” Prouds group manager Tony Velkovski said. Basketballers search for stadium By Alesha Capone More than 16,000 people have signed a petition calling for a stadium to put up its hand to host a South Sudanese Australian basketball tournament. The Change.org petition, which was launched about three weeks ago, attracted more than 16,890 signatures by Friday last week. The petition is calling for any basketball stadium willing to host the Summer Slam Basketball tournament to step forward.

The Summer Slam was held at Eagle Stadium in Werribee during 2016 and 2017, but this year – following discussions between the SSANBA, Wyndham council and Western Leisure Services – it was decided the stadium did not have the capacity to host the number of people who would attend the tournament. The South Sudanese Australian National Basketball Association (SSANBA) has staged the Summer Slam for the past 15 years, but has been unable to find a venue to hold this year’s tournament.

The SSANBA released a statement last month which said the association had been unable to find a venue due to “African youth issues that were widely covered in the media for the last few years”. The statement said that stadium managers were “afraid to host our event because of the African gang stories they see in the news”. In January, Wyndham Cr Peter Maynard said many residents had contacted the council about safety concerns, stemming from last year’s Summer Slam, after the tournament was

linked to the trashing of a rented Airbnb house in Werribee. At the time, Cr Maynard posted a statement online, which said the council would meet Western Leisure Services, police, Basketball Victoria and organisers “to suggest that this tournament not be held at the venue”. An all-round good sport Werribee Football Club chief executive Mark Penaluna has ended the year on a high by winning the Committee for Wyndham’s 2018 John Nicol Community Service Award. Mr Penaluna, who was one of the driving forces behind the $11.75 million redevelopment of Werribee’s Chirnside Park, is the fourth winner of the award, which is given for exceptional community service. Mr Penaluna grew up in Port Melbourne before making Wyndham home in 1992. In 1999, he became the general manager of the now Western Region Football League before taking over at the Werribee Football Club in 2003. Committee for Wyndham chair Peter Mayall said Mr Penaluna was a worthy recipient. “Mark’s contribution to Wyndham over many years is significant,” Mr Mayall said. “He continues this work – not only through his role at the Werribee Football Club, but with other community organisations and committees.

“The work that Mark undertook with John Nicol on the vision and redevelopment of Chirnside Park makes it appropriate that he has been given an award named after the person who shared the same community spirit.” Mr Penaluna said he was surprised by the accolade. He said moving away from partnership with North Melbourne Football Club had been a financial challenge. “We’re doing our best to make sure that we manage ourselves appropriately and, hopefully, the people of the city can get behind us,” he said. Council push for signature celebration

By Charlene Macaulay This is what Wyndham Park will look like following a $13 million redevelopment. The park will be closed later this month and pedestrian access through Wyndham Park, located to the north of Watton Street on the banks of the Werribee River, will also be shut off to allow for works which will revitalise the under-used space between the Werribee Bicentennial Bridge, off Comben Drive, and the park’s entrance at Werribee Street. Mayor Mia Shaw said once complete, the park will include a major events lawn that could fit up to 5000 people; a playground with a 12-metre play tower; seating; rest areas; barbecues; toilets; shelters; new pathways; improvements to cycling access; and improved lighting. There will also be a children’s nature play space with a magical forest theme near the Werribee Bicentennial Bridge, designed to cater for children with autism. “We’re opening up the views of this park so our residents and visitors can really make the most of this beautiful asset,” Cr Shaw said. “But in order to get this work done as soon as possible, it’s important that the park is closed in its entirety while construction is underway.” The state government has chipped in $3.2 million towards the project, with the rest coming from Wyndham council. Star Weekly understands the council is in talks with Watton Street traders about providing shop frontages to Wyndham Park and the Werribee River to make the most of views and improve safety around the park. The park is expected to re-open in 2019.

Wyndham council has committed to developing a “signature” event for the municipality. The council last week voted in favour of adopting a festival and events framework for the area. A report into the issue included a recommendation that the council establish a signature event that characterises or is “uniquely associated” with Wyndham. The report stated the council would work with the community to determine what the signature event would celebrate and the development of a business case would be an early step. It stated that such an event would strengthen Wyndham culture, identity harmony, image, pride and reputation. The report also recommended that the council conduct a feasibility study into an arts and cultural festival being held in Wyndham. The focus of the festival could be film, writers, performances or a combination of those. Cr Heather Marcus said there were many wonderful festivals held in Wyndham every year, but that some organisers did not know how to expand their events. She said she would like to see a festival held in Wyndham “every weekend”. Alesha Capone

Coast Guard’s water safety call By Alesha Capone The Werribee Coast Guard has appealed for people to stay safe on the water this summer. The Werribee chapter of the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard Association – which is also known as VF10 (Victorian Flotilla 10) – provides marine search and rescue services to a large section of Port Phillip Bay. Flotilla’s commander, Bruce Lawrence, said VF10 volunteers frequently received requests from Water Police to help boaters in trouble.

“Just in the period of this last week to fortnight, we’ve had around four calls for help,” he told Star Weekly last week. “On Monday [December 10], we rescued some people who could have died of hypothermia if we hadn’t found them.” Mr Lawrence said the Coast Guard found the “inexperienced” group of boaters about 1am in “very choppy waves”. He said the Coast Guard was often called to help people whose boats were sinking, broken down, run aground or out of fuel.

“Definitely the most important thing to do is make sure you’ve got fresh fuel and plenty of it,” Mr Lawrence said. “I’d also make sure my anchor worked, we’ve had quite a few jobs lately where people can’t even make themselves safe in one spot because they can’t drop anchor.” Mr Lawrence said it was also important for would-be sailors to check the weather forecast for the entire day and night. “So many people look at the day and say, ‘It’s a nice day, why don’t we go for a sail,’ and don’t

realise that four hours later, the waves could be up to 1.5 or two metres, and it could be raining,” he said. Mr Lawrence said anyone intending to venture onto the water should also ensure their life jackets had been recently serviced, their flares were not expired and their mobile phones were fully charged. He said it was important for boaters to carry reserve battery packs to recharge their phones, as the Coast Guard often needed to call people to find their location.

Aqua therapy heads west Yooralla has launched the first aquatic physiotherapy program in the west for children with disabilities. The program, which involves one-on-one sessions between physiotherapists and children, will be run at AquaPulse in Hoppers Crossing. Aquatic physiotherapy, also known as hydrotherapy, is physiotherapy performed in warm water. For children with disabilities, participating in aquatic physiotherapy can help with muscle relaxation and strengthening, cardiovascular fitness, pain management, stretching, movement, walking and balance. The Yooralla physiotherapist who facilitates the Hoppers Crossing program, Anne-Marie Dickinson, said the focus was on supporting children in developing day-to-day life skills. “We use the properties of the water combined with a variety of physiotherapy treatment approaches to address each child’s specific therapeutic goals,” she said.

Ms Dickinson said that while aquatic physiotherapy was available for adults at several Melbourne locations, not many practitioners offered the therapy for children. She said aquatic physiotherapy, now funded under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), was available at AquaPulse in blocks of six sessions. She said physiotherapists used the last two of those sessions to train a child’s parent or carer on how to continue the program on their own. Ms Dickinson said if anyone would like to receive funding for aquatic physiotherapy as part of their NDIS package, it was important to discuss the matter in an NDIS meeting. MY WYNDHAM Point Cook husband-and-wife Eden and Aimee Helu have opened a new café in Hoppers Crossing, Jock and Mack. They chat with Alesha Capone.

Ms Helu: I think for about five years we have been talking of wanting our own food business. We’re foodies and brunch lovers, and we like visiting neighbourhood café places. Mr Helu: What I enjoy most is satisfying the customers. We’ve been to lots of places before which don’t have that welcoming, homely feel. You feel welcome here, no matter what. Ms Helu: We’ve already got returning customers, who bring their dogs to sit out the front where we have little water bowls. The café, Jock and Mack, is named after our family dogs. They passed away five years ago, and thinking of them brings back lots of lovely memories for us. We wanted a café name that was individual, quirky and meaningful. And dogs and cafes go perfectly together. And your café is located inside the former post office and news agency building on Old Geelong Road. Ms Helu: We still have people come and go, ‘Oh, it’s (the post office) not here anymore. We didn’t realise’. You both have strong ties to the west? Ms Helu: I was born into Hoppers Crossing, when it didn’t look like it does today. I went to

Heathdale Christian College when it only cost something like $300 a year to attend. I then spent half my life in the east, got married and came back here. Our first family home was in Tarneit, we were there for eight years. Now we live in Point Cook. Mr Helu: I was born in Tonga and came to Australia when I was 12. I’ve always lived in the west. I started in Yarraville, then moved up here to Werribee and Hoppers Crossing. What do you like most about Wyndham? Ms Helu: For us, the sporting facilities are very important. Our three sons all play sport. Eagle Stadium is amazing. We also love the walking tracks in Point Cook. There is a lot of diversity here too, it’s great we can go out and get all types of food. We have all different types of festivals here now. In the end, we are raising our children here. We love the train lines, the children take the train to school and it’s really easy for them. The libraries have lots of services – including chess clubs and coding. There are lots of really great services in Wyndham now, for families. How has the area changed since you were a child? Ms Helu: Just the explosion of all the homes. Pacific Werribee has massively changed – that’s really good, we feel as though we don’t always have to go to Highpoint!

For many, Christmas is Santa and presents and parties and holidays with friends. For the faithful, Christmas is shepherds and angels and wise men and carols and nativity scenes.

Vicious dog attacks on residents and livestock are increasing in the municipality because many residents are allowing their pets to roam the streets, Werribee Council Ranger John Brown, said last week. The problem has not yet reached a crisis point but council is stepping up patrols around Werribee in a bid to cut down on the number of attacks.

Wyndham council and the State Government are on a collision course over registration fees for food handling businesses. The council plans increases which, in some cases, will top 500 per cent.

Chaffey Ward councillor Shane Bourke was elected unopposed as mayor for a record-breaking fifth term last week. First elected in 1988, Cr Bourke, 52, was the last mayor in the City of Werribee in 1994 and the first mayor of Wyndham in 1997-98.

The announcement this week that Wyndham will soon be home to its own A-League Football Club was something to be celebrated. A day at the races designed with kids in mind

There’ll be plenty to keep the kids entertained at Kids Day at the races.

Once the excitement of Christmas and New Year is over and school holidays really hit their stride, parents begin to think about how kids can be entertained – without it costing an arm and leg. One answer is to take them to Kids Day at the horse races. Werribee Racing Club’s Saturday, January 12, race day is geared around activities and free entry for kids under 18. Grown-ups get to watch the horses thunder around the tracks, enjoy $5 beverages and perhaps have a flutter, while the kids get to do their own thing. And a family picnic on the lawns can really make a day of it. For the first time, the day’s free activities will include the gang from Wild Action Zoo. A guaranteed crowd-pleaser, the zoo gives kids a chance to get up close and personal with all kinds of animals. Static wildlife displays provide selfie opportunities and the team will field questions as the kids get hands-on with all the animals. The Kelly Sports team will also be on board, with four hours of supervised activities that will include a mix of sports, dance and fun team happenings. It’s a recipe I’ve adapted from a Robert Carrier cookbook. It was given to my wife when we got engaged. FB: What is your favourite food? JB: I reckon – quite seriously – the most delicious thing on the planet is a Four ‘n’ Twenty pie or a potato cake from Fish Fetish, the fish shop next door to the Continental Hotel in Sorrento. FB: Working breakfast hours, do you get through a lot of coffee? JB: Look, I’m not a mad coffee nut. The modern fashion of going out for coffee doesn’t appeal to me. It’s just coffee. I’ll have an instant coffee when I get in (to work) and when I get home I’ll have an instant coffee with a cigar, and then that’s it for the day. FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner? JB: Jesus, Michael Caine, Nigella Lawson, Lady Gaga and Mr Creosote from Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life … the bloke who came in and exploded (to finish the night off with a ‘bang’.)

The only place to buy them is in the market in Kyoto. I’ve got five of them and they’re worth every penny. The other knives – you can’t get an edge on them. If you look after your Japanese carbon steel knives, they’re just works of art.

It just happened to be a stinking hot, 38 degree day in Melbourne when I posed the question on the Food Bytes Facebook page: Which do you prefer, a Golden Gaytime or Pine Lime Splice? Who knew ice creams could be such a polarising topic? We do a regular little weekly survey called the Friday Food Poll, and it has to be said that this one went absolutely bananas. Maybe it was the heat getting to us all! For Rob it was all about the time and place: “Splice outdoors during the day, Gaytime watching a movie on the couch.” Nadine would choose the Pine Lime Splice on a hot day, but a Golden Gaytime on the cooler ones: “Best of both worlds,” she says. For Lina, it’s “Pine Lime Splice by a street,” but Fran says there’s no contest – it’s Golden Gaytime all the way. For Mark, price equates to quality. As he remembers it from days gone by, “The Splice was in the 50 cent category, just above the lowly icy pole. CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir takes up residence at Dumpling House Tina’s Dumpling House is a major arrival in Altona. The food at Tina’s is good and the prices and service righteous – so much so that Altona locals will surely ensure its success and residents of the wider west are advised to consider it a destination. Indeed, in terms of quality for this kind of food, the prices are bang on par with what’s available elsewhere. As well, most dumplings can be had in variable serving sizes of six or 12 pieces. Of course, Tina’s is not just about dumplings – there’s a range of main courses, rice dishes and noodles available. And, yes, you can get here lemon chicken or sweet-and-sour pork if that is your bent. Tina’s has taken over a Pier Street premises long home to a previous Chinese restaurant. It’s a lovely room in which to sup. The wait time of 15 to 20 minutes for dumplings is re-assuring in terms of knowing a house-made philosophy is in play. Pan-fried pork-and-cabbage dumplings ($7.80 for six, $11.80 for 12) are terrific. All too often, we find the meaty centres of such dumplings have a turd-like toughness – even good ones! At Tina’s, the fillings are luscious and tender. Steamed prawn dumplings ($7.80 for four) are just as good, with a full quotient of that essential bursty prawn effect going on. Steamed barbecue pork buns ($6.80 for two) are, for me, a revelation.

This plump pair are superb and make a fan boy out of me – like son, like father. The fluffy/moist buns are stuffed with a more generous than usual mix of hot, sticky chopped pork heavily perfumed with rice wine. Beef brisket soup noodle is one of our regular choices, but always with egg noodles. At Tina’s, we stumble into a rendition made with rice noodles, their whiteness imbuing the bowl with a pallidness that suggests bland. But there’s no doubting the robustness of the broth or the pleasure to be had from the excellent, tender chunks of beef ($11.80). Food lore tells us that there’s nothing Singaporean about Singapore fried noodles – just as there is nothing Chinese about egg foo young. But that doesn’t mean a dish of “Singapore” fried noodles, often less oily than other Chinese wok-fried noodle dishes and with a fetching grittiness delivered by curry powder, cannot be immensely enjoyable and satisfying. SPORT Dan’s the defensive man for Werribee Werribee has shored up its backline with the addition of former North Melbourne key defender Daniel Nielson. Nielson is a familiar face at Werribee as he pulled on the Big W jumper during his time at the Kangaroos as part of the Werribee-North Melbourne alignment. The 22-year-old managed seven games at AFL level over four seasons between 2015-18, but his rookie season was ruined by a knee injury. After failing to gain a senior spot for North Melbourne last season, Nielson was delisted and is now keen to re-energise his career with Werribee under coach Mark Williams. “I came down for a couple of sessions and

there was a huge drive for being competitive and wanting to improve coming from Mark Williams and the playing group itself,” Nielson said. “Knowing those boys a bit, I know how they play and their character as well, so I just felt this was the best fit for me.” While Nielson’s chances in North Melbourne’s AFL side were limited, he is a proven performer at VFL level. At Werribee, he was an important part of former coach John Lamont’s defensive set up. In North Melbourne’s inaugural season as a VFL entity, he was named among the best players in seven of his 16 games. Werribee football operations manager Stuart

West’s A-game wins big By Lance Jenkinson In announcing two successful bids for A-League expansion last week, Football Federation Australia chief executive officer David Gallop made reference on multiple occasions to the “pluses and minuses” that stacked up in favour of the Western Melbourne Group and Macarthur South West Sydney bids over the other four bidders left in the race. The pluses for Western Melbourne significantly outweigh the minuses. Western Melbourne will enter the A-League next season, playing its first two seasons at Kardinia Park in Geelong before moving into a newly constructed stadium at Sayers Road, Tarneit, likely from the 2021-22 season. The Western Melbourne Group – an interim name until the official club name and colours are revealed after community consultation – has the opportunity to take the A-League where it has never been before. The focal point of the bid was a new stadium that will be funded by private investors and run by the Western Melbourne Group, while Wyndham council provides infrastructure surrounding the precinct. The stadium will be a boutique 15,000 seater. A similar model has proven successful for some clubs in the Major League Soccer in the US and the second-tier Championship in England. Gallop is excited by the potential of a boutique stadium in the A-League. “With West Melbourne, there’s an opportunity to do something quite unique and something that we’ve seen successful in football globally, which is to have a purpose-built football stadium,” Gallop said. “Of course, there will be a period when we won’t have the team in a new stadium, but importantly they will be in a facility [at Kardinia Park] that will present the game well and have a playing surface that is comfortable for our players. “West Melbourne is a growth corridor and the prospect of having our own stadium built out there is exciting indeed.” The location of the stadium in Tarneit was a key talking point among A-League fans. From a geographical point of view, it makes sense. The heartland will be Wyndham, which is a fast-growing region with new estates in the process of being built. The new team will look to embrace the whole of the west, both in the suburbs and the regions. The club can draw on fans from surrounding councils such as Melton, Brimbank, Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay, and further afield from cities such as Geelong and Ballarat. More than 30 soccer clubs in the west have signed on as partners of the Western Melbourne bid. Creating a connection with these players at grassroots level is important for the new A-League team. If Western Melbourne is to win the hearts and minds of Geelong supporters, it has a great

It was a bold bid and in the end I think that was what got them over the line. The ignorance of some of the comments from alleged experts regarding the Western Melbourne Group bid was incredible. The way some described it you would have thought the new stadium was being built in a remote, desolate enclave rarely seen by any civilised beings as opposed to Tarneit, a vibrant suburb with a growing population and facilities. Wyndham council backed the bid by gifting the land in-principal, a bold move and one they should feel good about. We all know there are needs and demands for money and support in other areas but the economic benefit of this to the City of Wyndham in particular will be enormous. ■ David Hayes knows horse flesh, as proven by his incredible training feats over decades in the racing industry. He obviously knows a bit about footy as well as he talked his son Will into not hanging up his boots at the end of 2017 and giving his dream one more shot. It paid off as Will won the Footscray VFL best and fairest, went on to be drafted to the Bulldogs in November and now is a professional footballer. Will and the other future stars of the club have been introduced to members and supporters at recent end of year functions. Will is a football stayer, having spent five years in the VFL system waiting for his chance. Williamstown coach Andy Collins spoke last week about the number of AFL-ready players in the VFL, citing Jack Charleston at the Seagulls as another who should get a chance. ■ I would like to wish all readers a very merry Christmas and a happy and safe new year. opportunity to embrace the town in its first two years of existence before their full-time move to Tarneit. It makes sense for Geelong fans to support an A-League club that is a 30-minute train ride away instead of making the longer hour journey to Melbourne’s CBD. The proposed stadium is also relatively close to Avalon and Tullamarine airports, so interstate teams and fans will have easy access. The Western Melbourne bid team has talked about creating a club that identifies with the people of the west.

If it can unify the west behind one team, it will mean an extremely multicultural supporter base. A major plus for the A-League and broadcasters is the addition of more derby games in the important Melbourne and Sydney markets. Imagine the atmosphere inside the “Wyndham Stadium” when Melbourne City or Melbourne Victory comes to the west. The planning is complete and now work on the biggest sports project in our own backyard can begin.

Rising stars take on the world By Lance Jenkinson Ten elite young western suburbs athletes will be vying for the prestigious 2018 Don Deeble Sports Star award next month. The Deeble committee will reveal the name of this year’s champion athlete at an awards dinner on the last Wednesday in January. The first nominee was squash player Dylan Molinaro. Molinaro ended the year with selection in the Australian under-19 team after strong performances on the national and Oceania stage. Undaunted by the quality of opposition at the Oceania or Australian championships, he finished on the podium at both major events. While it was a tough year for Australian cricket, the sport is booming in the west. Local star Travis Dean was named Victorian captain and his young Footscray teammate, Dylan Brasher, was the March Deeble nominee after turning heads on the national stage. Brasher, 16, went from breaking records for Western Spirit at the under-18 state titles to

breaking SA bowlers’ hearts with a century at the nationals. Our first female nominee of the year came in April in the form of hammer thrower Louise Mendes. Mendes stamped herself as one of the most promising young throwing prospects in Australia when she took the state and national titles by storm.

The 19-year-old then got the chance to compete on the international stage in Finland, gaining priceless experience in her quest to one day represent Australia at open age level. Cycling sensation Luke Plapp was the May monthly winner. Plapp had a remarkable year on the bike, winning two World Junior Track Cycling Championship events and a silver in the World Time Trial Championships. Martial artist Bailey Lewis was the June nominee. Lewis clocked up the frequent flyer points to compete in the best taekwondo events in the world. The Werribee resident won state and national titles, as well as competitions in Oceania and Europe. Footballer Xavier O’Halloran started the year as the Western Jets’ captain and ended it as a first-round AFL draft pick for the GWS Giants. In between, O’Halloran was the July Deeble nominee and captain of Vic Metro. Hockey rising star Carly James has always been modest about her hockey career. Good thing the experts know a talented player when they see one because James is now part of the emerging Hockeyroos squad and was the Deeble nominee for August. Celeste Mucci achieved a lifelong dream by

representing Australia at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. The national heptathlon champion’s nomination for the September Deeble award was a given considering the heights she reached this year. Later in the year, Mucci captained the Australian under-20 team at the world championships. Baseballer Nikau Pouaka-Grego was the Deeble monthly winner for October. If Pouaka-Grego gets his way, he will one day be gracing the fields of the MLB or the ABL. If that eventuates, 2018 will be remembered as a stepping stone for the Newport Rams infielder. Pouaka-Grego got to strut his stuff for Australia at the Junior Baseball World Cup in Panama and finished the year achieving one of his goals – selection in the Victorian under 16 team for the national championships. The final nominee of the year was versatile track and field athlete Frank Mazza. Mazza could get a stiff neck holding up all the gold medals he won at the Victorian schools track and field championships. He proved to be a true all-rounder, winning gold in the javelin, long jump, triple jump and hurdles.

In an interesting move, Lexus will import only hybrid versions of its Lexus ES 300. Now in its seventh-generation, the ES is being offered in Luxury and Sports Luxury grades. Compared with the outgoing gen-six Lexus ES, power has been increased by almost six per cent to 160kW, while fuel consumption has been reduced by 16.4 per cent to 4.6 litres/100 kilometres as measured on the Australian combined cycle. A new-generation 2.5-litre petrol engine is among the most thermally efficient in a production vehicle. It is linked to an electric hybrid system with components that are smaller, lighter and more efficient than in the outgoing model. In an apparently odd move, the Japanese company that has made its name by providing near-silent running is offering drivers the chance to turn on an “active sound control”. This generates an audio feedback that gives the aural effect of up and downshifts like those experienced with a geared automatic transmission. We will comment on this when we borrow a road test car from Lexus. Alloy wheels are standard; 17-inch for the ES Luxury and 18-inch under the Sports Luxury. To counteract noise that can be generated by low-profile tyres, the 18-inch wheels have a hollow rim structure to help reduce the noise. Infotainment is controlled through a 12.3-inch multimedia screen and there’s a wireless phone charger. Satellite navigation, Lexus Enform and DAB+ digital radio are standard. ES Luxury features a 10-speaker Pioneer audio system. For Sports Luxury, the Lexus ES debuts a 17-speaker Mark Levinson surround-sound system. The Lexus Remote Touch Interface pad has
