Werribee racing date that’s a real winner Mark Sunday, December 9, in the diary because this year’s TAB Werribee Cup promises to be the biggest and best family day of the year. Spendthrift Australia Park general manager Ashley Baker says the second Sunday in December is firmly fixed on the Country Racing Victoria calendar and – more importantly in the minds of the Wyndham community “The Werribee Cup has a rich history, so a consistent date for community awareness is, we believe, vital to growing and re-establishing the Cup’s status as a leading country cup and sporting event,” Mr Baker says. “This is now the fourth year the Cup has run on this date.” Although the racing takes centre stage, Werribee Cup day is great for family, friends and work colleagues to hold Christmas parties, so plentiful are entertainment and fun. “Bookings are already up on previous years, with all hospitality packages sold out except a handful of tickets remaining in the Birdcage Cocktail Bar,” Mr Baker says. “There really is something for everyone on the day, children included.” The all-new Birdcage Cocktail Bar will be the scene of much fun, while the 18 to 35 year olds can dance the night away to the tunes of renowned DJ Spacey Space in the Park Hotel Garden Pavilion. The Diva Reserve on Marque Hill is a corporate area with prime elevated views of the racing. The marquees have their own bar, the same dining as enjoyed in the upstairs Committee Dining Room and full TAB access. Mini-marquees and umbrella packages are being snapped up and food and beverage offerings are upgraded across the entire course. “We’re also excited to see the return of Fashions on the Field,” Mr Baker says. “This much-loved event brings even more colour to the day and competitors make Werribee proud with their beautiful outfits.” As always, the Werribee Cup is super family-friendly. Wheels of kindness By Charlene Macaulay and Alesha Capone A homeless man who had the car he was sleeping in taken off the road has scored a helping hand from Good Samaritans. Lawrence Willis has been living in his Toyota for more than two years after he became a victim of family violence and relies heavily on the generosity of the Wyndham City Salvation Army to get by. Last month, his living situation became even more precarious when Mr Willis’ car was broken into and his phone and licence plates were stolen. Shortly after, he was pulled up by police for driving an unroadworthy car and given a week to fix the car – but Mr Willis didn’t have the means to get the car up to scratch. In stepped Good Samaritans Trevor Baker and Colin Hancock, who bought Mr Willis a station wagon for $600 and fixed it up so he could sleep in it. Earle and Jill Motors in Werribee helped to fix up the car at a discounted price, and a local hardware store supplied materials so the pair could build a makeshift bed. Mr Hancock, who also lives in his car, said he understood the pressure faced by Mr Willis: “Homeless people with their cars – they don’t have the money to maintain them. “You either spend money on the car or spend money on food.” Mr Willis said he was eternally grateful to both men for helping. “You can’t imagine what it feels like to have people go out of their way to help you out.” The emergence of Mr Willis’ plight followed the release of a new report which found about 32,600 Wyndham residents live in poverty. The Victorian Council of Social Services (VCOSS) and economic modelling firm NATSEM’s Every Suburb, Every Town report stated that 17 per cent of Wyndham’s residents are living on or below the poverty line (the report defined the poverty line as living on $353.45 per week). Wyndham voters have their say By Charlene Macaulay Wyndham voters will head to the polls this Saturday following weeks of campaigning and election promises from candidates vying for one of the city’s three lower house seats. Thousands of voters have already lodged their votes by post and at early polling centres, which opened last Monday, November 12. By Saturday night, 7431 Werribee voters took to early polling booths and selected from the eight candidates contesting the seat, currently
held by Labor MP Tim Pallas. According to Sportsbet, Mr Pallas has $1.05 to $1 odds of holding on to his seat, with independent candidate, long-time Werribee GP Joe Garra, the next favourite at $7. In the seat of Tarneit, which has been left vacant by Labor’s Telmo Languiller, 6387 voters lodged early votes. In Altona, where Labor incumbent Jill Hennessy is seeking re-election, 7613 voters had visited pre-polling centres by Saturday night. In the past week, Labor has promised to build
a new early parenting centre in Wyndham that would support 690 families a year and give new parents the advice they need, including support with sleeping, feeding and extra care for babies with additional needs. Wyndham council’s Schools 4 Wyndham campaign has taken Labor to task for promising seven new schools in Wyndham by 2022 when six of the schools listed had already been planned and partly funded. In an email sent out at the weekend, the campaign expressed its concern that the
Coalition had made no commitment to build new government schools. Similarly, Dr Garra questioned why Labor had committed $100 million for a maternity hospital in Geelong when Wyndham, which officially outstripped Geelong’s population earlier this year, was overlooked despite its rising maternity and paediatric needs. “[Geelong is] getting a new maternity hospital, while Werribee has a limit and some women have to get to Sunshine to have their babies,” Dr Garra wrote on his Facebook page.

Mum leaps at chance to give back A Hoppers Crossing mum has jumped from a plane to raise awareness of post natal depression. Tamara Halliburton and her friend Rhyse Dorward went skydiving from Barwon Heads Airfield on Sunday as part of the annual MotherJumpers fundraiser held by the Centre of Perinatal Excellence (COPE), which aims to improve the mental health and emotional wellbeing of expectant and new parents. The pair are among 20 to skydive throughout November for the fundraiser.
“It was terrifying, but also a little bit exciting as well,” Ms Halliburton said of the weekend’s jump. Ms Halliburton said she was diagnosed with post-natal depression and anxiety after having her son Lloyd, who is nearly two. She said while she had heard of post-natal depression before having her son, she didn’t fully understand what the signs were or what to look out for. Ms Halliburton said at the time she thought her feelings were due to hormonal changes and
would pass, “until I got to a point where it was really, really not fine”. Ms Halliburton, who received a lot of support through COPE, said she joined the fundraiser because she felt ready to give back. “I’ve skydived once before, so I knew I could do it, and I guess too it was also a way to shake me out of my mum comfort zone.” Ms Halliburton raised $1145 through the jump, making her one of the top fundraisers.
Wyndham council has ramped up its war on waste by halving the cost of green waste drop-offs at the Werribee tip. Residents can now get rid of a car or station wagon load of green waste – which includes food and garden waste – for $15.50, with trailer loads of green waste also reduced by 50 per cent. The waste must be completely separate from any other types of waste and free of contamination. Wyndham council environment and sustainability portfolio holder Heather Marcus said the discount aimed to encourage better waste disposal habits. She said the council was also offering major discounts on compost bins and worm farms. “Almost half the rubbish found in residential bins is food or garden waste,” Cr Marcus said. “By cutting the price of dropping this waste off at council’s transfer station, we hope to see more residents take advantage of this option. “The green waste will be turned into mulch, which residents can also collect for free at the transfer station.” The move is part of a Wyndham council plan to divert 90 per cent of household waste from landfill by 2040. Kevin Hillier wants politicians to go back to grass roots
P
olitics and community radio have a lot in common, as both claim to be our voice and both fulfil that charter on occasions, but for too much of the time they miss the boat. Both claim to serve the people and again they do when it suits them, but serve themselves for the most part. Many politicians, at all levels of government, are in it for the right reasons – as are many of the people involved in community radio – but some in both are in it for the power, the ego and the chance to be in the limelight. As a result, both politicians and community radio people spend too much time protecting their turf when they should be doing productive work to enhance the area they operate in. Both can be guilty of eating their young to maintain their rung on the totem pole. The big difference is the size of the pay packet, or in the case of community radio the existence of one. Pollies are paid very well by any standard and should be available for their constituents and should listen to what they have to say.
Community radio should stop trying to be a competitor of commercial radio and find its local voice, and some of those voices should be our elected representatives. What better forum for the Member for Tarneit, Werribee or Altona to inform residents of what is happening and to be available to talk to those residents via talkback radio or to answer SMS questions? The community station would need to remain neutral but an hour a week (no more please) rotated between the federal, state and council representatives would help both to become more of a true and relevant part of the community. When Tim Pallas appears on radio these days, it is as state treasurer, not the Member for Werribee, so questions about the East Werribee Precinct, the Hoppers Crossing gates or the grant to restore the Werribee water tower are unlikely to get a look in. On a local show they would be front and centre. So to both parties: Once the dust settles after the November 24 election, how about making it happen? â– â–

Cops hunt for Wyndham’s wanted By Alesha Capone Wyndham police have launched an operation aimed at finding and arresting offenders with outstanding warrants. Uniformed officers arrested five people last Tuesday (November 13) as part of the crackdown. Senior Constable David Reynolds, from the Wyndham North police station, said the arrests had occurred in private residences in areas including Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit,
Truganina and Wyndham Vale. He said those arrested included a mix of men and women. All were aged above 18 years and were wanted for not attending court. Police also issued about 12 infringement notices for various offences including anti-social behaviour during the operation. Senior Constable Reynolds said the operation would continue for several months and urged anyone with outstanding warrants to take action to resolve their “wanted” status.

“We’re encouraging people, who know they have an ongoing warrant or warrants, to attend a police station or get in contact with us,” he said. He said anyone with a warrant could be arrested at any time of the day or night.
“It might be two or three in the morning when we knock on your door,” he said. “Or you might be out for dinner, and a police officer just happens to be passing through and sees you – or you are caught in a crime as a victim or bystander, but the police will recognise you because of the warrant.” He said friends and families of people with outstanding warrants could encourage them to come forward. Shorten commits to the west By Tate Papworth Opposition Leader Bill Shorten will make the west a personal priority should he become Australia’s next prime minister. Touring the St Albans Leisure Centre last week, Mr Shorten said he’s vested in seeing the west get its fair share. “If we form a federal government I’ll be your prime minister. I do know this area and I’m very committed to seeing the western suburbs in Melbourne get their fair share,” he said. “I’ll have an algebraic formula that’s Australia
plus the west. It just means that whenever we do anything national, I’ll always be interested to see what we’re doing for here.” Mr Shorten said his party has already developed policies for immediate impact. “We are going to have universal pre-school for three and four-year-olds. That will see resources here,” he said. “You’re a growing community with a lot of young families, we are going to properly fund schools. “For places like the St Albans North Primary School, that will literally mean for the next
three years alone, hundreds of thousands of dollars more, more teachers, more electives.” “We’re going to challenge the vested interests in this country and govern Australia for the interests of the people who don’t always have their voices heard.” Mr Shorten toured the leisure centre just one week after the state government rejected the Brimbank council’s application for a $3 million Better Pools grant. “If we win the election … we’ll be in a position to look pretty seriously at the propositions you’ve set,” he said.
“But we won’t leave this particular proposal [leisure centre re-development] to the election. In other words, we’ll give you a clear answer on what we can afford well in advance. “We won’t leave you guessing for long. I like the proposal. If this is what the community is telling me is a very important ask, then we will treat it with the importance you do. “It’s affordable, but not only that, it’s necessary. “I hope you take that as very favourable consideration. We’ll crunch the numbers, but I’m confident we can come to a happy landing.”

Shaw confirms mayoral bid By Alesha Capone
Tireless teen lives to give Laura Mallia has crammed more philanthropic work into her 17 years than most people manage in a lifetime. The Hoppers Crossing resident recently received a Lalor Hero award for her volunteer work with the Edmund Rice Foundation, with which she’s spent the past two years tutoring refugee children. The Lalor Hero awards are presented annually by Lalor MP Joanne Ryan to exceptional volunteers in the community. Laura, a Thomas Carr College graduate who hopes to study childcare at Australian Catholic University next year, travelled to the Phillipines earlier this year to volunteer in orphanages and schools. She has fundraised for the RSPCA, the Australia Alopecia Areata Foundation [AAAF] and kids cancer charity CanTeen. Earlier this year, she received a Mayoral Youth Award for her efforts. “It’s good to get recognised,” Laura said. “It started probably six years ago with the RSPCA. I do the Million Paws Walk every year, and for the past four years I’ve done Cupcake Day, also for the RSPCA … I do a bake stall and hold raffles. “For AAAF and CanTeen, I cut and donated my hair – 30 centimetres off, three years ago.”

Wyndham councillor Mia Shaw has declared she will put her hand up for the municipality’s top job. The council will hold a meeting next Wednesday, November 28, to elect Wyndham’s new mayor and deputy mayor. Outgoing mayor Peter Maynard and deputy mayor Walter Villagonzalo have held their positions for 12 months. Cr Shaw, who represents Iramoo ward, said that after speaking with some of her fellow councillors, she had decided to nominate. “I believe I would be a good mayor for this council – I have the years of experience and the skills to successfully do the role and represent our community at the highest level,” she said. Star Weekly understands that at least one other councillor will nominate for the mayoral role. Cr Kim McAliney said she would not stand for either position, but would support Cr Shaw. Cr Henry Barlow said he was not planning to nominate. Cr Villagonzalo and Cr Tony Hooper, who are both on leave from council duties to stand in the state election, said they would not stand for the role of mayor. Student’s secret is out It’s no secret that Westbourne Grammar School pupil Preet is a great writer. The 11-year-old, who lives in Truganina, has received a national award for a 500-word story she submitted to this year’s Children’s Word of the Year competition. The competition, run by Oxford University Press Australia and New Zealand, asks children from grade prep to grade 6 to submit a piece of writing based on a word that reflected their lives and interests – in Preet’s case, the word was “secrets”. Preet said she wrote a fantasy story about a girl who lives in a cave and cares for her sister after the village their family lives in burns down. The girl later discovers she is a warlock and
that her mother is still alive. Out of more than 500 entries, Preet’s story won her the national award for grade 6 pupils. Preet said she was “so happy” with her win, for which she received a $50 book voucher. “At first I couldn’t believe it,” she said. Preet said she loved reading and writing. “I loved reading Harry Potter, and from that I found out that I love fantasy novels and I love magic,” she said. Preet said that when she grew up, she hoped to be both a doctor and an author. Westbourne Grammar’s grade 6A class also won an award in the competition. Alesha Capone

Support on the inside By Alesha Capone Most people do not look forward to going to prison. Volunteers from Prison Fellowship Australia are the exception to the rule. The organisation is part of Prison Fellowship International, which began in the US in 1976 and now operates in more than 120 countries. Volunteers from the not-for-profit Christian organisation aim to help prisoners transform their lives and support prisoners’ families. The group’s volunteers take one-on-one visits and group activities with prisoners and events such as camps for the children of prisoners. The fellowship has more than 270 volunteers in Victoria, including three men from Wyndham: Mark Duggan, Tony Bonnici and Paul Itter. Mr Itter has been volunteering with the organisation for 15 years, Mr Bonnici 14 years and Mr Duggan for about seven months. Their tasks include visiting prison to talk with inmates and helping to support inmates who have just been released from prison. They work with prisoners who have committed all types of offences, from white-collar crimes to violent crimes. Mr Bonnici said he became involved with the fellowship after a nun at an East Brunswick church, who was looking for someone to volunteer with juvenile detainees in Parkville, approached him. In addition to participating in one-on-one conversations with prisoners, he also helps with Change on the Inside, a six-week program which teaches inmates about topics such as responsibility, self-control and forgiveness. “The message that I deliver to them, is that even though you have committed a crime, don’t think you are useless or no good for society, it will be a new life when you get out,” he said.

Mr Duggan, who is also a Lifeline volunteer, said he became involved with the fellowship because he likes to help people. “If a prisoner says to me, ‘I’m really wicked’, I say, ‘I’m not here to judge you. The legal system has put you in prison, they will judge you, but I won’t’,” he said. “During visits, I actually listen more than I talk – the prisoners can say anything to us
and it doesn’t necessarily go any further.” Mr Itter said it was “fantastic” to help prisoners turn their lives around. He said the fellowship volunteers hoped to encourage prisoners to change their lives and stay out of crime after serving their sentences. Prison Fellowship Australia is looking for more volunteers. High praise for tower of artistic power Werribee’s iconic water tower will be transformed into a giant artwork. The 18.5 metre heritage water tower at Southern Rural Water headquarters, on the corner of Tower Road and the Princes Highway, will be turned into a large mural after receiving a $146,055 grant through the state government’s Community Support Fund. The grant comes shortly after Wyndham-based not-for-profit charity group Arts Assist unsuccessfully applied for funding through the state government’s recent Pick My Project grants program. The concrete water tower, which was built in 1913, will be painted with a mural highlighting the historical significance of the water tower to the community. Werribee MP Tim Pallas said the water tower was highly visible and was a gateway to Werribee’s CBD. “The Werribee water tower is well known to everyone in Werribee and this exciting project will make it something that locals can be even more proud of, celebrating Werribee’s history and its development,” Mr Pallas said. “This project will give new life to a local landmark and highlight everything that makes Werribee a great place to live.” Charlene Macaulay

Drug importer jailed 15 years By Alesha Capone A man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for drugs charges, one of which was committed while he was on bail. Sehwhy Nipoe pleaded guilty to one charge of attempting to import a marketable quantity of a border-controlled drug and one charge of attempting to possess an unlawfully imported border-controlled drug. In both cases, the drug involved was methamphetamine. The County Court earlier this month
heard that in August 2015, authorities intercepted a consignment from Hong Kong which contained a suitcase with packages of methamphetamine. Australian Federal Police monitored the consignment, which was later delivered to an address in Margaret Street, Werribee. The court was told Nipoe’s nephew signed for the package in Werribee then drove to his uncle’s house in Truganina, where he placed the suitcase in the garage. The suitcase was seized by Australian
Federal Police shortly afterwards and found to contain 544.6 grams of pure methamphetamine. Nipoe was arrested when he arrived home later that day. He was charged with attempting to possess an unlawfully imported border-controlled drug and released on bail. In December, 2015, Nipoe was charged with attempting to possess an unlawfully imported border-controlled drug in a commercial quantity after federal police intercepted eight boxes which arrived in Australia from China.
The boxes contained 8.634 kilograms of pure methamphetamine with a street value of about $875,000. Judge Frances Hogan said she was satisfied that Nipoe played a “significant role” in the importation of both lots of drugs. She sentenced Nipoe to eight years in prison for the possession charge and nine years for the importation charge, with two years to be served concurrently. Nipoe will not be eligible for parole for 11 years.
Road progress slammed A Wyndham councillor has taken the government and contractors Netflow to task for a lack of maintenance along Duncans Road while its interchange is being upgraded. Wyndham councillor Mia Shaw said it was “unacceptable” that Netflow, which has a $600 million contract for road maintenance throughout the west over the next 20 years as part of the Western Roads Package, had not scheduled any significant maintenance for Duncans Road until early 2019. Cr Shaw said she was concerned by the state of the road shoulders and disappointed a traffic light intersection at Edwards Road had not been included as part of the interchange upgrade, with locals struggling to drive in and out of Edwards Road due to increasing traffic. “This road carries about 11,000 vehicles a day and is becoming, in my opinion, a safety issue,” she said. “It’s time they were sealed and I would urge the government to commit funding to this as a matter of urgency.”
Meanwhile, Werribee resident Rob Clancy said turning right onto Duncans from Loyola and Yalonga roads was becoming similarly difficult for residents. In September, Werribee South’s Daphne Karantzouli said it beggared belief the government had funded revamping the Duncans Road interchange without also funding duplication and repairs for the rest of the arterial. Major Road Projects Authority acting project director Grant Deeble said the maintenance program for Duncans Road included drainage improvements and rehabilitation work, which is scheduled to begin in February next year. Official visit for A-league bid By Charlene Macaulay A Football Federation Australia (FFA) delegation has been taken on a tour of Wyndham as a decision about the location of two new A-League soccer teams draws nearer. Wyndham deals, investment and major projects director Kate Roffey, said FFA chief executive David Gallop, other FFA personnel and representatives from Deloitte were taken on a tour of key sites in Wyndham on November 12 to see the area’s population growth first-hand.
“I think it’s clear to say they now see the potential we offer as a genuine new destination for an A-League team,â€? Ms Roffey said. “We’re giving them an opportunity to tap into a massive potential fan base, with no direct competition from other A-League clubs. “They were also genuinely impressed with the innovative value capture model being used by the Western Melbourne Group and Wyndham City to fund ‌ an elite sport precinct that includes a state-of-the-art 15,000-seat stadium without requiring any state or federal government funding.â€?

The Western Melbourne Group’s bid to set up a club in Tarneit as part of an expansion of the A-League is one of six remaining bids on the table, with a decision expected next month. Wyndham council has worked with the Western Melbourne Group on the bid, which
also has the support of Brimbank, Maribyrnong and Melton councils. If the bid is successful, a multi-million dollar 15,000-seat stadium – dubbed Wyndham Stadium – will be built on Wyndham council-owned land at 1160 Sayers Road to host the new team. In a statement last month, Mr Gallop said: “We need to continue our consultation with those bid teams to ensure that they adequately address these areas to ensure their future sustainability, which includes securing stadia, catchment area and financial capital.�
Tanks for the design Point Cook Senior College has celebrated the school’s Aboriginal population with an Indigenous mural on one of its water tanks. The school engaged Aboriginal artist Nathan Patterson to work with a group of 15 students across years 10 and 11 and help them come up with a design to celebrate both the school’s Indigenous students and the land. “The kids came up with a design around community, family, also saltwater and freshwater because we’re close to the coast here and we’re near the Werribee River as well,� Mr Patterson said. “They came up wth the design themselves and the stories. I sort of helped with some design elements but they’ve done all of the painting on the water tank and it looks absolutely amazing. “It’s a proud moment for the students but also the school in recognising Aboriginal culture and wanting to share that.� Year 10 student Riley said the work included

Mayoral Column November is when we begin looking toward what the festive season may bring. For Victorians, it could be a new government, or the return of the current one. Next week, we’ll know which. Victoria is experiencing record population growth, which has created local challenges in places like Wyndham. But with the right planning and investment, our communities will thrive around prosperous activity centres in places like Werribee, Tarneit, Truganina, Point Cook and Williams Landing. You may have noticed us advocating loudly for the infrastructure and services needed to seize this opportunity. Among other things, we need expanded and better-connected rail and bus services, upgraded car parking at stations, and new schools and kindergartens that are co-located to create vibrant community hubs. I’m pleased that political parties have made election promises that will address some of these needs. It goes without saying that your local council stands ready to work collaboratively with which ever party wins government. The liveability of our suburbs depends heavily on the Victorian Government and local governments working together closely. Kate will be popping in By Charlene Macaulay Australian songstress Kate Ceberano will kick-start Werribee’s pop-up park when it returns to Station Place in January. The multi ARIA award-winning artist will take to the stage for the pop-up park’s re-opening on January 18 and continue the park’s tradition of Friday Night Live concerts, which will also include Sam Perry and Bella Paige from The Voice, Nicky Bomba’s Bustamento, bluesman Ash Grunwald, folk favourites The Audreys and legendary rockers The Choirboys over consecutive weeks. The performers will be supported by a number of local artists, including Michelle Gardiner, Ashleigh Watson, The Mixx and Lewis Pidutti. Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard said the free events were sure to be a hit. “It’s great that we’re going to have artists of this calibre performing in the heart of our city,” he said. “Kate Ceberano and The Choirboys are legends of the Australian music industry who will no doubt draw massive crowds.” The pop-up park, which will run over five weeks until February 24, will include a Saturday morning makers market run by the Wyndham Business Tourism Association; classic family flicks at the free outdoor cinema every Saturday night; food trucks every Sunday from noon-6pm; and a number of free community workshops, classes and talks on weekdays. Werribee’s 2018 pop-up park, which ran for five weeks in January and February, attracted an extra 18,783 visitors to Werribee’s CBD. But a number of Station Place traders called for the park to be discontinued or

relocated following this year’s debut, saying the experiment had been bad for business by closing 22 carparks that fronted their stores. Cr Maynard said next year’s park included

Childcare centre bid ‘no better’ By Alesha Capone The Werribee District Historical Society is continuing to express concerns about plans to build a childcare centre next to a heritage-listed former shire hall. Freemasons Victoria, which owns the hall, has recently re-submitted a planning permit application to Wyndham council to build a 91-place childcare centre on the site. The re-advertised proposal, in partnership with developers, has attracted 22 objections, while the original attracted 19 objections.
The former shire hall, on the corner of Watton and Greaves streets, dates back to 1867 and served as the first offices of Werribee council (which preceded Wyndham council) before being sold to the Freemasons. Star Weekly last year reported that historical society secretary Lance Pritchard had criticised the proposal to build a childcare centre near the historic bluestone building. Mr Pritchard last week said the historical society was objecting to the re-submitted proposal, which he described as “virtually no better” than the original.
He said that the historical society had submitted its own idea of how the childcare centre should be built, which involved the retention of a small bluestone wall on Greaves Street and the site’s existing entry and exit. Mr Pritchard had concerns that current plans would obstruct views of the former shire hall. He also described the proposed carpark as “unworkable”. A spokesman for the developers said they had worked with the council to address historical design requirements for more than 18 months.
Freemasons Victoria’s president of the board of general purposes, Justin Stark, said the new proposal was “very sympathetic of the heritage of the site and maximises the integration of the bluestone building into the environment”. Mr Stark said some of the funds earned by the childcare centre would be used for the heritage hall’s ongoing maintenance. He said the proposal had been reviewed by a traffic specialist. The council is yet to make a decision on the proposal.

Wyndham Vale residents Nina Nilsson and Bec Salmon know what it’s like to have a loved one diagnosed with cancer. Miss Nilsson’s mother survived breast cancer three years ago, while several members of Miss Salmon’s family – and her mother’s best friend – have also been diagnosed with various forms of cancer. For the past three years, Miss Salmon and Miss Nilsson have entered the Wyndham Relay for Life as a team, joined by family members and friends. Last year, the team – named after Hoppers Indoor Sportz centre, which is run by Miss Salmon’s partner – raised $7000 for the Cancer Council. The women said they enjoy taking part in the annual relay. Miss Nilsson said the relay was “about getting together as a community and inspiring people”.
Miss Salmon said everyone at the relay was “there for the same reason”. “Cancer affects everybody, everyone somewhere along the line – whether you survive it or lose someone,” she said. Miss Nilsson said their team would take part in next year’s 2019 Wyndham Relay for Life, to be held on March 30, with hopes of raising $14,000. To help their fundraising efforts, they have organised a community market with 35 stalls, to be held on Sunday, November 25, from 2-5pm at Hoppers Indoor Sportz, 13-55 Graham Court, Hoppers Crossing. In a class of his own This educator has reached a golden milestone. Tony O’Byrne was celebrated last week for notching up 50 years of service to Catholic education. In his younger years, Mr O’Byrne was a member of the Christian Brothers Order, where he received teacher training and fronted his very first class when he was only 19 years old. His first proper role wasn’t until a couple of years later, when he began at St Joseph’s Pascoe Vale in 1968. He was only 23 when appointed year 9 co-ordinator at St Bernard’s in Essendon and has been in leadership positions ever since, including as principal at St Leo’s Box Hill and later principal at Aquinas College Ringwood, where he spent 25 years. In 2007 he won the Victorian Principal of the Year and he won the Victorian Educator of the Year – Hedley Beare Award in 2006. “I’ve always loved teaching, loved working with young people – they were always great fun – and always interested in ensuring that they enjoyed their learning.” Mr O’Byrne also spent four years as a member of the National Catholic Education Commission, was an independent chair of Catholic School Parents Australia and for the past three years has been a principal consultant for the western region, where he offers support to principals in Catholic schools. The 71-year-old said he would continue the role for one more year, then is likely to retire. “Apart from my initial teaching, which was around Melbourne, my principalships were out in the eastern suburbs and so I’ve found it really quite enjoyable to be here in the west, which is very different.”

Police hunt bike thieves Police are investigating a series of bicycle thefts from stores across Melbourne and Geelong, including Hoppers Crossing. Police said they have identified seven incidents in which a man has attended a cycling store, removed a bicycle and fled outside to a waiting white Mazda ute, driven by an accomplice. The thefts, which police believe are linked, took place between October 28 and November 6. One of the incidents took place at a store on Old Geelong Road, Hoppers Crossing on October 28, while the others were in South Melbourne, Brunswick East, Keilor Park, Flemington (attempted theft), Pascoe Vale and Grovedale. Sergeant Tony French told radio station 3AW the stolen bikes were valued between $1500 and $5500 each. He said that before stealing the bikes, the thieves would sometimes speak to staff at the bicycle stores. Police have released CCTV images of two men they believe could assist with their inquiries. The first man is of either Middle Eastern or Pacific Islander appearance, about 185cm tall with a pot belly. He often wears an orange high-visibility top, a hat and sunglasses. Build start for Wyndham school By Alesha Capone Construction has started on a future P-12 school in Wyndham Vale, with a sod-turning ceremony marking the occasion last week. Wyndham Christian College, which is being built on Ballan Road near Wyndham Vale Christian Centre, is set to open for prep to grade four pupils in term one of next year. It will be a sister school for Heatherton Christian College in Clarinda in Melbourne’s south-east. On Wednesday, college representatives and Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard attended the sod-turning.
Dan Park, the chairman of Christian Resource Ministries – the body that oversees the schools and church – also attended. Mr Park said that the Heatherton school had received more than 500 queries from families, hoping to enrol children at the Wyndham college between next year and 2020. But he said that the college had already filled its student quota for next year. He said when the college opened, it would have about 125 pupils, including two prep classes. Heatherton Christian College executive principal Peter Cliffe, who will also be executive principal of the new Wyndham college, said

The self-published book, Security Adventure Service is part expose, part instructional manual for other security guards and is due for release at the end of this month. “It’s not a boring job,” Moses said. “Sometimes it could be a little bit dangerous but most times you get to help a lot of people. “I’ve seen parents using their three and five-year-olds to steal, I’ve seen people in their 80s stealing - I’ve seen a lot.” Moses got into security when he moved to

Playground on the rise Tarneit Rise Primary School’s fundraising committee is taking advantage of the school’s gym being used as a polling centre on election day this Saturday by hosting a fundraising sausage sizzle. Committee member Erin Block said the money raised would go towards a second playground for Tarneit Rise, which opened at the beginning of this year for students across prep to grade 2. From next year, the school will have students from prep to grade 6, with about 600 children currently enrolled for 2019. Ms Block said the school has only one

playground, which was not big enough to cater for a tripling of its population. “We’ve got this tiny little climbing frame, and when you consider how many students we’re about to get, it’s definitely not enough. “When you’re adding grade 6s into the mix, you probably need something a bit more challenging to cater for their recreational needs.” The committee has raised $5000 towards its $60,000 target so far, with plans to also host a public movie night in December. No co-educational facilities at Werribee Technical in the near future was the clear message from the Director-General of Education, Dr. Laurie Shears, when he opened the second stage of the school last Friday. Dr. Shears performed the opening ceremony when the Minister for Education, Mr. Lindsay Thompson, was confined to bed through illness.
Werribee has declared war against thousands of rabbits which are causing havoc to local farmers. Hundreds of the vermin are being killed in Werribee each week in an effort to control the growing numbers.
Wyndham residents broke into celebration last week with the news plans to build a toxic dump in Werribee had been aborted. More than 300 anti-toxic protestors packed the civic centre’s reception area – on less than two hours’ notice – to hear the news that 80,000 Wyndham residents had been waiting to hear for 2 1/2 years: CSR’s plans to build a prescribed waste facility at Wests Road, Werribee, were off.
Sign up or we’ll force you out – that was the ultimatum the six remaining unlicensed boatshed occupiers on the Werribee South foreshore received from Wyndham Council last week. The occupiers have been given 21 days to pay up or transfer ownership of their boatsheds to someone who will abide by the conditions, set by the council.

MY WYNDHAM Jennie Purdie-Smith has lived in Point Cook for four years. She chats with Alesha Capone.
I grew up in McLaren Vale, a famous wine region in South Australia. I did a hairdressing apprenticeship, became a salon manager and a technician with Wella at the age of 21. After working in New Zealand, I came to Melbourne and later opened my own salon, Silx, in Richmond. I had that for nearly 10 years. One day I made an appointment with the Richmond Football club’s general manager and became the Tigers’ official hairstylist for five years. I used to get radio gigs talking about doing the footballers’ hair. I didn’t know what to say, so I used to make stuff up – I said I would give them aerodynamic hairdos to make them run faster! You’re passionate about mental health. In 2005, I was one of the Australians of the Year – I got an award for services to the community. I was concerned about mental health, as my salon was across the road from the Melbourne Clinic, and people from there would come to my salon. I made it my mission to learn a lot about mental health. I got Rotary to run a community forum in Richmond with speakers, including Jeff Kennett from beyondblue. I was a member of Richmond Rotary at the time. And now you work with young unemployed people? I am with the Australian Employment Training Solutions (AETS) Youth Jobs PaTH
Group, which aims to help people aged 18-25 gain employment skills. They have to come up with a business plan to help charity. It teaches them discipline, teamwork, communication and responsibility. What do you like about Point Cook, or Wyndham? I love the community spirit, the open spaces, the fact everything is nice and modern. I like how the Point Cook Town Centre is built to look like a country town shopping strip but is still a shopping centre. I think it’s great that we’re only 25-30 minutes from Geelong – there are a lot of great restaurants there. I love the Iramoo Community Centre, which I run the Youth Jobs PaTH Group out of. For sights, the Victoria State Rose Garden is wonderful, the Werribee Mansion, the Werribee Zoo and the river. Listen To Your Body health studio in Wallace Avenue is fantastic – Trevor and the gang there are great. Where do you like to eat? The Wyndham Cache is my favourite for a brunch or long lunch. I love the Waterstone Cafe – the owner Vince makes you feel like you’re in his home. I also love Cocochine at Point Cook Town Centre and Pelican’s Landing in Williamstown, Mosaic in Altona and Dumpling Story at Pacific Werribee. Emporio is just around the corner in Point Cook and The Brook is great for a pub meal. And I also love Shadowfax.

FB: How would you rate your cooking skills? EM: I am a certified chef from William Angliss, I worked as a culinary producer on MasterChef North America and taste test for raw food restaurants in Bali and India as well as luxury hotels around the globe. My grandpa was a shearer’s cook and my mum makes the best scones on the planet. But really my style is very basic. I love home grown, no fuss grub. FB: What is your signature dish? EM: Maple lemon rind butter glazed Atlantic salmon with smashed potatoes, balsamic asparagus and grilled zucchini OR roasted sweet potato, lemon juice, rocket, pine nut, goats milk feta salad. The veg side for winter, salad side for summer. FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? EM: This is tough, I love all food! King prawns from Australia, a crispy free range roast chicken with rosemary, mussels in garlic broth, butter chicken, chola, gopta and garlic naan, and anything with cacao for dessert. FB: What is your favourite TV food show and who is your favourite TV food person? EM: I have to say Stephanie Alexander because her daughter is my best buddy and her Easter buns are incredible. I love watching Maggie Beer as well. Her Barossa Valley kitchen is incredible. FB: What is your favourite food? EM: Anything sweet minus the gluten, dairy or sugar. I’m into finding ways around refined sugar these days by using coconut sugar, maple syrup and dates. FB: Which 5 people would you most like to invite to dinner? EM: I saw pictures on Facebook of my old film producers at a dinner party with Jimmy Fallon, Bob Newhart and Carol Burnett. Now THAT sounds like a very interesting mix of Hollywood royalty. FB: Do you have a kitchen tip for us? EM: Invest in a really good set of knives. I still have my Victornoix from chef’s school. Sharpen them regularly with a stone. A set of graters from Microplane is a must. Also, if you are cooking a lot, wear a good clog like Dansko as they will save your back and make cooking more comfortable, especially if you have tiled floors. I cannot live without a Vitamix for smoothies and juices. It keeps the fibre of the food. You can also blend soups and make hummus, cheesecake bases, crumbs and nut milks.

So often people ask me: “What can I make with overripe bananas?” Normally I’d say whack them in a cake, but there are only so many banana cakes one can make! A quicker (and healthier) school lunchbox option is banana and oat cookies, with coconut, ground cinnamon and whatever other little fillers you like – think raisins, dried cranberries and choc chips! I added some chia seeds to mine and – as you can see by the photos – I never can resist a drizzle of dark and white chocolate. There are many easy recipes online, but you can’t beat The Healthy Chef banana and oatmeal cookie recipe at www.thehealthychef.com. Don’t forget, you can freeze overripe bananas to use later!

Christmas spirit kicks into high gear for all ages Santa arrived at Pacific Werribee last Sunday and, with his acrobat juggler, stilt-walker and contortionist friends in tow, had all ages thoroughly entertained. Pacific Werribee will keep the cheer coming every day until Christmas Eve, with Santa ready to pose during all opening hours for photos with your children. There are several photo packages available, including digital deal packages that allow for unlimited prints and sharing. The Blitzen package, at $33.95, is good value for a family and no bookings are required. The centre has set up a sensory-friendly, low-stress environment in quiet surroundings for children with special needs. Sensitive Santa photo sessions require bookings and will be held on three consecutive Sundays – November 25 and December 2 between 8-10am; and December 9 between 9-10am. A gift wrapping service will be on offer for a gold coin donation, with proceeds going to the Wyndham City Salvation Army. Stations will be set up near Kmart and Guest Services. On top of a string of good results at the draft combine – finishing in the top 10 in the sprint, YoYo, 2km time trial, kicking test and placing second in the agility test – Bond said he had huge upside for any club that picks him up. “He is just a leader, a very mature kid,” Bond said. “We had multiple times this year where we needed a lift, and he was the one to give us that. He’s got a ready made body for the AFL so he’ll be eyeing off a spot in the midfield somewhere I would think.
“Personally I think his leadership sets him apart from others. At that level everyone can play, it’s a matter of how well they will fit in the system, so if you’ve got a strong character it takes a lot of the guesswork out for clubs. I think it’s just as important as the skill set.” Bond also highlighted Western Bulldogs academy prospect Buku Khamis as a potential draftee, with the former refugee come key defender a chance to make it. “His athletic profile is second to none, and he’s had a very strong year,” Bond said. “There’s a fair chance that the Bulldogs will bid on him at some stage, and he deserves to be on an AFL list either at the Bulldogs or as a rookie.” Hard running Daly Andrews is also an outside chance to be snapped up, according to Bond. Teen’s golden age of track By Tara Murray The hard work Frank Mazza has put in during the off season is starting to pay off. In his first two competitions of the track and field season, Mazza has claimed five gold medals. First, the 13-year-old competed in the School Sports Victoria Secondary Track and Field Championships in late October. Having missed out on qualifying for the event, through being away at another competition, he represented his school Brookside College in just one event, the aged 12-13 boys javelin. He claimed gold, throwing five metres further than second place. Two weeks later, Mazza competed at the 2018 Vic All Schools Track and Field Championships, again representing his school. He claimed gold in the under-14 javelin, long jump, triple jump and 90-metre hurdles. The Caroline Springs resident said he was unsure how he was going to go at both competitions. “The season had only just started,” he said. “It was really good fun. I was really happy and you could tell that all the hard work I had been doing had paid off.” The Vic All Schools Track and Field Championships represented the first time he had competed over the 90 metre hurdles. Next up is the 2018 Australian All Schools Track and Field Championships in Cairns next month, where he will compete in the javelin, triple jump, long jump and 90 metre hurdles. Having won three silvers at the same event 12 months ago, he has one aim this time round. “Hopefully I go better than last time and I’m aiming for gold.”Mazza is the November nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and/ or national levels. IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ Like many, I think money has changed football forever and there is no going back, so it’s time for a reality check on the state of the game. The points system is the best thing local footy has done in years. Its double effect was to stop teams buying players from other competitions and killing flag aspirations and it encouraged playing current and former junior players. The effect the latter will have on club cultures and tradition in the future will be invaluable. The points system also heralded a salary cap – the greatest white elephant of all time – and it’s time to scrap it. Money is here to stay so let clubs pay players whatever they want. It is their business what they pay and if they can afford to pay Billy Bloggs $1500 a game, let them. He is still a five point player and that is more important than what money he pockets. You can’t run footy like a nanny state. Badly run clubs will still fall into financial trouble but at least the salary cap will be gone. ■ Plenty of movement in the November transfer window in local football. Albanvale has scored a major coup signing Nathan Black from Werribee Districts. I can see him having the same impact at Cobra-land as Brent Sheean had this year at Point Cook Centrals. Josh Mould is a handy pick-up for the Tigers from Wyndhamvale. Caroline Springs has lost a few good ones with Jason Degabriele, Rex Hickman, Daniel Backus and Justin Brook all heading to the Mallee Eagles. Liam Cavanagh departs Sunshine for Strathmore. ■ The Bulldogs past players end of year function also served as the AGM where the current committee was 100 per cent returned under president Ross Abbey. The group has thrived in recent times and the work of the committee and Bulldogs liaison manager Linda Murray is paying dividends. Jumper presentations to Gordon Casey, Kevin White, Alex Gardiner and Lindsay Gilbee last weekend highlighted the reach the group has these days over those who wore the red, white and blue in the past. Recently retired premiership player Clay Smith spoke at the lunch about his highs and lows at the kennel in a career cut short by knee injuries. Sad to note the passing last week of Eileen Sutton, known to all as Chubb, the widow of the great Bulldogs legend Charlie. What a wonderful woman. Condolences to the family.

The Western Jets expect to see a number of their stars step up to the AFL after this week’s draft, with Zak Butters and Xavier O’Halloran topping the list. Despite missing half the season following shoulder surgery, Butters is expected to hear his name called out in the first round on November 22, and Jets talent manager Jy Bond said there’s a good reason so many rate him so highly. “What stood out for me with Butters is the fact he was able to play through that shoulder injury and play to a high standard,” Bond said. “He went through the Vic Metro side playing injured and showed he could cope. He’s got a slight frame, but he showed he’s tough and courageous which is what really stood out. “I still think he’ll go in the top 15 from all reports, and he’s a fantastic character and a good kid so he’ll work hard when he gets into an AFL system.”

Point Cook batsmen in smashing form for tons of runs

A massive 161 from opener Harpreet Sunny Singh was the highlight of a huge batting day for Point Cook on Saturday. Taking on Seabrook in Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 3 at Saltwater Reserve, Singh smashed 17 boundaries and a six to register his second century in succession. He has 355 runs for the season at an average of 177.5 to lead all comers in the grade so far. Singh got plenty of support on the day, enjoying a 104-run opening stand with his captain, Brett Talbot (32), followed by a 102-run partnership with Scott Maloney (53) to have his side on the path to a huge score. Singh was enjoying a third strong partnership, with Owen Doolan (54), when he was dismissed by Dilip Sarkhell (1-32), one of just three bowlers to get a wicket on the day.
Point Cook continued the pain through Gurbaksh Khaira (61) and Sarwan Kumar (32), with Seabrook using 10 bowlers in its search for answers. The hosts batted through to stumps, posting 5-405. Walgama Kankanamge Eranga (1-96 off 28 overs) and Andrew Hodgart (1-12) were the only other bowlers to enjoy success. Elsewhere, an unbeaten 122 from Lance Macdougall has Wyndhamvale in a strong position in it division 4 match-up with Moonee Valley. Wyndhamvale batted first after winning the toss, its top order batsmen all making starts. But Macdougall was the only one to go past 50 as he controlled the middle of the day in setting up his side’s total of 5-282.
Captain David Buchanan (35), Lachlan King (31) and Manish Chaudhary (27) all made valuable contributions in partnership with Macdougall. A win for Wyndhamvale this week would lift it off the bottom of the ladder. In division 2, Werribee Centrals are in a dominant position in their clash with St Andrews Pascoe Vale. After knocking over both openers with the score just one, the Centrals bowlers were able to regularly break through as they rolled the home side for 107 in 53 overs. A six wicket haul to Daljit Singh wasn’t enough for Tarneit Central to avoid a huge chase this week, after Buckley Park piled on the runs in the North West Metropolitan Cricket Association’s George Luscombe Shield on Saturday. Singh toiled hard from the start of the day after Buckley Park won the toss, finishing with 6-112 from 25.2 overs, but the hosts had a string of good partnerships throughout the afternoon as they finished with 357 on the board. Simran Cheema provided good support with 3-48, before Tarneit Central faced out three maidens late in the day to get to stumps unscathed.

A five wicket haul to Vikram Reddy Choulapally was the highlight on a tough day for AA Tarneit as it faced off against local rivals United Tarneit in the Western Suburbs Churches & Community Cricket Association A.E. Lowe Shield A grade. With United winning the toss and batting, the runs flowed throughout the afternoon as they piled on 9-306 before declaring late in the day. Choulapally was the best across the day with the ball as he collected 5-58 from his 14 overs, while Madhu Kunchala (3-56) did good work with the new ball earlier in the day. United had seven overs to negotiate late in the day, and made a fast start despite an early wicket as they got to stumps on 1-30.

Cats go down fighting By Ewen McRae Hoppers Crossing fought hard in the top-of-the-table clash with Williamstown, but came up short for its first loss of the season. With the sub-district south-west first XI rivals the only unbeaten teams coming into round five, the two-day clash at the weekend doubled as a good pointer to title credentials. While the Cats had their moments throughout the contest, Williamstown had a 164-run partnership between Matthew Dervan and Brenton Hodges to thank for giving it a commanding total at the end of day one. From there, Williamstown looked the better side as it took a one-game lead on top of the table. But it was the Cats who started the better on Saturday, with Greg Kennedy (2-50) grabbing two early wickets and Brett Smith chiming in with one of his own to have the Seagulls in early trouble.
When Mitchell Streiff and Matthew Twentyman both fell cheaply, the visitors – at 5-46 – were staring down the barrel of a paltry total, but Dervan and Hodges dug deep to rescue the day. They were watchful against the good balls and slowly built the total. Both fell late in the day – but the damage had been done. Dervan was the first to go for 83. Hodges was run out in the shadows of stumps for 94 as Williamstown finished on 7-251. Hoppers Crossing was always going to find the chase tough on a wearing pitch, but openers Jack Rhodes (32) and Cameron Nicol (24) frustrated the Williamstown attack with a patient 53-run stand to start the day. But when Nicol fell to Fraser Hay, a mini-collapse ensued, with the Cats slipping to 3-68. From there, the hosts struggled to maintain momentum. Despite handy contributions from Nick Keast (37) and Smith (30), the Cats were bowled out for 188.
Elsewhere, Werribee got back on the winners’ list after an unbeaten century from Matthew Dean guided it home in an impressive chase against Elsternwick. Bradley Apps (4-36) grabbed early wickets on Saturday as Elsternwick’s top order floundered, but 123 from William Long saw it get to a competitive 202. Tim Gage (3-40) and Tim O’Brien (3-28) were also impressive, so when the chase began on Sunday, the Tigers were well placed. A strong opening stand from Dean and Andrew Ford (23) saw 73 runs wiped from the target, but once that partnership was broken regular wickets fell throughout the afternoon. But while wickets fell at one end, Dean was a constant throughout the chase. He finished on 113 not out when Werribee reached the target with just two wickets in hand. The win has Werribee on the brink of the top six with a 3-2 record.
Werribee remains unbeaten in division two of the Vic Summer Baseball League, following two wins over Springvale in the past week. With mid-week games kicking off on November 15, Werribee shot out to an early lead and was never headed as it snared a 5-0 win under lights, but was made to work hard for its win in the re-match on Sunday. Springvale was far better at the plate as it crossed for four runs, but the Giants showed their class to take a narrow 5-4 win and stay in second place on the table.

Wyndhamvale star Josh Mould will be playing with Werribee Districts next season after the young gun transferred to the Tigers. Mould played 17 games for the Falcons in 2018, kicking 15 goals and was named in the best on 11 occasions.
