Wyndham to remember On the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour, we will remember them. Wyndham locals will gather at the Station Place cenotaph in Werribee from 10.40am this Sunday for a traditional Remembrance Day service, which will include wreath-laying, the Last Post and reading of the Ode. November 11 marks the 100th anniversary of the Armistice which ended World War I. Werribee RSL president Daryl Ryan said it was more important than ever to commemorate those who lost their lives during World War I. “One of the questions I often get asked is why are the names on the cenotaph,” Mr Ryan said. “That is those gentlemen’s headstone here in Australia – they haven’t got a grave here in Australia. Some of those people haven’t got a grave, they were completely obliterated. “Their headstone is not at the cemetery, it’s at the cenotaph. “Sixty from Werribee died … we’ve got to remember that the life that we live in this country has been paid for in blood. “Some of them had families, others never got to have a family. Kids never got to know their parents, so we’ve got to keep that alive. We’ve got to remember not only them but all service personnel.” BAILEE

Anger over pokies rise By Charlene Macaulay Wyndham council has launched a scathing attack on a state government decision to add 80 new gaming machines to Wyndham from 2022. State Gaming Minister Marlene Kairouz last month announced new poker machine entitlements for 2022 onwards, including an extra 80 pokies across venues in Tarneit, Truganina and Point Cook, which are not covered by Wyndham’s partial cap. This means Wyndham will go from having 903 machines to 983. The announcement came only weeks after Ms Kairouz launched the state government’s
inaugural Gambling Harm Awareness Week, which ran from October 8 to 14. Cr Josh Gilligan, who chairs the council’s gambling reference advocacy group, urged the government to reverse its decision. He said the move would make Wyndham the second-most saturated pokies entitlement area in Victoria. “The fact that it has been so quietly revealed in the lead-up to a state election is deeply disappointing,” he said. “Wyndham already has more than 900 pokies machines that have taken a daunting $105.5 million from our residents’ pockets in 2017-18 alone.
“The social harm caused by gambling is well known, with research showing that areas with limited access to pokies have fewer instances of family violence, among other issues. “The major parties need to face up to record levels of gambling harm and show communities like ours how they intend to address this problem.” Cr Gilligan also called on the state government to introduce $200 withdrawal limits at ATMs in gaming venues and reduce trading hours. In November last year, state government gambling reforms placed Wyndham under a partial regional cap for poker machines,
meaning that a maximum 638 machines are allowed across Hoppers Crossing, Laverton, Laverton North, Manor Lakes, Werribee, Williams Landing and Wyndham Vale. The parts of Wyndham not covered by the regional cap are subject to a municipal limit of 10 machines per 1000 adults. A government spokesperson said the 80 new machines were outside of Wyndham’s area of high vulnerability. “We know how insidious problem gambling can be – that’s why we’re helping those who choose to gamble stick to their limits,” she said.

Family pet fights for life after vicious dog attack A Melton woman is appealing for witnesses to a vicious dog attack on her beloved pet. Karen Blacklaws has been at Maddy’s bedside as the six year-old Jack Russell fights for life at the Werribee Animal Hospital after a severe attack last Tuesday night (October 30). Ms Blacklaws said her husband was out walking the couple’s two dogs, Maddy and Karly, a Maltese cross, when a man with three large dogs on leads, lost control of them. “My husband wasn’t sure what breed the three dogs were but described them as very big
dogs,” Ms Blacklaws told Star Weekly. “Karly ran away and ran home but the dogs just set on my poor Maddy. “The man took Maddy out of the mouth of one of the dogs and laid her on the nature strip … my husband thought she was dead.” The Jack Russell has a punctured lung, neck and spinal injuries and wounds to her legs. Ms Blacklaws said the pup’s neck wound was so deep her microchip was lost in the attack. “She’s had to have two surgeries and she’s in a bad way in ICU,” she said. “It’s horrific.
“She’s not just a dog, she’s my baby. “Imagine if they got a little kid, the kid wouldn’t have survived. “There were people around who had seen the attack.” Ms Blacklaws is urging anyone with information about the attack on October 30 about 6pm along Melton’s Sunset Boulevard, near the park, to contact Melton council on 9747 7200. Anger over road snub By Charlene Macaulay A Point Cook intersection where drivers are “playing Russian roulette with their lives” has been ignored by the major political parties in the lead-up to the state election. Wyndham council has expressed its fury that there has been no commitment from either the state government or opposition to upgrade the intersection at Sneydes Road and Point Cook Road, despite significant lobbying in recent years. The council’s safer communities portfolio holder Kim McAliney said traffic lights and a
pedestrian crossing were sorely needed at the T-intersection, with drivers struggling to turn right onto Point Cook Road from Sneydes Road due to the sheer amount of traffic. Cr McAliney said the intersection was the scene of a number of accidents. “Thousands of vehicles are using this intersection every single day, yet there are still no traffic lights in place,” she said. “Residents are playing Russian roulette with their lives on a daily basis just to get through the intersection, which is simply not acceptable. “This is a fatality waiting to happen.”
Mayor Peter Maynard added: “The Point Cook Road and Sneydes Road intersection needs traffic lights to improve its safety, and it needs them now. “Council is ready and willing to partner with the state government to fix this intersection. “We know that residents are fed up with this situation and we hope that the major parties will address it as a matter of urgency.” Star Weekly asked both Labor and the Liberals if they would commit to upgrading the intersection if elected. Neither party responded by deadline.

A Point Cook man has his eye on a brand new Mustang car after a TattsLotto draw made him a multi-millionaire. The ecstatic winner held one of seven division 1-winning entries nationally in TattsLotto’s $20 million Superdraw on Saturday, October 27. Each division 1-winning entry took home a prize of $2,857,142.86. The man said he got the shock of his life when he discovered he had the winning ticket. “I’m over the moon at the moment,” he said. “I checked my ticket Sunday morning using the app and I nearly spilt my coffee when I did.” Despite the life-changing news the man has no desire to retire anytime soon, but said he wanted to spend some of his winnings on a new car. “I’m going to invest most of this and the rest goes to family and friends,” he said. “I might get a new car – maybe a Mustang.” The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, purchased his 15-game QuickPick entry at Central Lotto in Altona Meadows. Pollies launch boats pledge Election promises by both major parties to abolish boat ramp fees and return all licensing and registration revenue to the industry, has been welcomed by the Boating Industry Association of Victoria. Annual permits can cost up to $315 at Altona and Newport boat ramps, and up to $202 at Werribee South. Daily tickets cost up to $25 a day. Association chief executive Steve Walker said Victoria had been “the last dinosaurâ€? in charging boat ramp fees. “In every other state ‌ you don’t pay to park and launch your boat and park your car and trailer there,â€? he said. “They encourage that because they know how good it is for the community for people to be out boating and they know how good it is for the economy to drive activity and visitation and tourism and all those things, whereas there’s too many barriers in Victoria.â€? The BIA, as part of its Ramp Rage campaign, is calling for a “super facilityâ€? in the west. “Whether that’s in the Werribee South precinct or Altona or somewhere in between, we know that there’s great demand, there’s population growth and lots of reasons why it needs to be addressed.â€? Hobsons Bay councillor Sandra Wilson said it was good news for boaters but important not to forget that fees existed because of “considerable lack of funding for ramp infrastructure, cleaning and maintenance from successive state governments over a long
period of time�. “We hope the intent of this is to not just make access free but to also address the growing costs of ramp maintenance, utilities, cleaning, dredging and new infrastructure that ramp fees still only partially cover. “We look forward to seeing the detail and how this commitment will help cater for the growth that free access will create and how it will help our ratepayers who today also subsidise the running of these facilities for local boaters and those who come from outside Hobsons Bay.�

Ports Minister Luke Donnellan said the government would compensate councils for lost revenue when the fees were abolished. “We’ll abolish parking and launch fees at ramps and make sure that every cent of licensing and registration fees is spent on boating safety and facilities. “We’ll establish the Better Boating Fund to get to work immediately on urgent boat ramp upgrades.� Opposition ports spokesman David Hodgett said the government had ripped off the boating and fishing community for four years by not returning all boating revenue to the community.
Hoppers Crossing Secondary College has maintained its status as Wakakirri award winners, taking out one of this year’s national awards. The school bagged the National Health Category award for its performance Race of Life, which acknowledges that everybody is dealt a different card in life. Hoppers Crossing students first performed the item at a Wakakirri heat at The Clocktower Centre in Moonee Ponds in July, before being invited to perform again at the Victorian Secondary Schools Awards Night at Melbourne’s Palais Theatre in September. The school’s Wakakirri co-ordinator, Natalie Boicovitis, said 100 students from all years had been in rehearsals since first term and had been

involved with the storyline, choreography and the set. “[Race of Life] demonstrates the difference between students who are privileged and those who are not,� she said. “Even though they attend the same school, some are more privileged than others.� Wakakirri is Australia’s largest annual performing arts event for primary and secondary schools. Hoppers Crossing Secondary College are Wakakirri veterans, having won three national awards since 2014. By Joanna Catalano Western suburbs researcher Professor Vasso Apostolopoulos, has spent decades developing cancer-fighting vaccines. She’s now hopeful she’ll see the fruits of her labour routinely administered to cancer sufferers. “That is my dream,” said Professor Apostolopoulos. “We are getting closer all the time to finding viable, achievable ways to fight cancer and other diseases.” Professor Apostolopoulos is Victoria University’s new acting vice-president of research and comes with an impressive resume. She developed the world’s first vaccines for breast and ovarian cancer in the 1990s. These vaccines are now in the final stages of commercialisation. She is optimistic that it is only a matter of years before the vaccine is routinely administered to young women, similar to the cervical cancer vaccine. She came to Victoria University four years ago from the Austin and Burnet research institutes, after working around the world including at Oxford University and the Scripps Institute in San Diego. She is of Greek descent, and a western suburbs girl at heart, born and raised in St Albans and currently residing in Sanctuary Lakes. She said she chose to work at VU because of its welcoming culture and the growing opportunities in Melbourne’s west. She brought together members of Australia’s Greek and scientific communities recently, addressing them at a public lecture held at Melbourne’s Hellenic Museum. She says her important work would not have been possible without major contributions and support from Australia’s Greek community.

prompted her interest in researching cancer when she began university. Her research focuses on immunotherapy, systems that harness the power of the body’s immune system to identify and destroy cancer cells. She describes her revolutionary work as “platform technology” that also offers hope in treating and preventing pancreatic, colon, and lung cancer, as well as multiple sclerosis.
Wyndham women and children escaping family violence will soon have access to a new seven-unit refuge close to home. Construction will begin on the Werribee site later this year and, once complete, will include units that can accommodate a range of families and an area for on-site support staff. Works are expected to be completed in early 2019. The refuge will be operated by the Safe Futures Foundation, which is the state’s largest provider of crisis accommodation. State Housing Minister Martin Foley said the units were part of the government’s pledge to adopt all 227 recommendations from the Royal Commission into Family Violence, including phasing out communal refuges. “Family violence is Australia’s number one law and order issue – that’s why we’re taking action and leading the nation in our efforts to end violence against women,” he said. A total 1032 family violence incidents were recorded in Wyndham during the 2017-18 financial year, including 503 common assaults, 267 serious assaults, 150 cases of threatening behaviour, 69 instances of harassment and private nuisance, and 43 cases of stalking. The announcement comes six months after a new multidisciplinary centre – which houses police and support services under one roof – opened in Wyndham. Charlene Macaulay

bout 20 state election candidates in the one room, in front of some of the most passionate agitators in the area. What could go wrong? Hats off to the Committee for Wyndham. Hats off for the idea and making it work. I was the MC/moderator. I am unaware of this type of event happening anywhere else. Certainly it was a first for Wyndham/Werribee. The event went smoothly, with each candidate given three minutes to make a statement. That was followed by an hour of questions from the floor and some via email. The major parties were represented, as were independents and some of the smaller parties. The time constraints made it necessary to be succinct – a concept many aspiring and career politicians struggle with. It was interesting to hear the different approaches of the candidates. Some chose to talk about themselves and their reasons for running. Others concentrated on their policies. The candidates were an interesting mix, but the audience – members of which had to
register online to be in attendance – was a more eclectic ensemble. As expected, personal agendas were a high priority and the difference between making a statement and asking a question needed to be emphasised. The underlying theme of the night was respect – and for the most part that was adhered to. The idea that the loudest person in the room wins the battle was, thankfully, not on show. While this was not the forum for an elongated debate, most topics of importance were covered and the majority of candidates had opportunities to have a say. Will it make a difference to the election result? No, but as someone who has been around the area for a long time following local politics, it was good to see some of the lower-profile candidates having a say. The next step would be to film it in a similar style to the ABC’s Q&A and make it available on the Committee for Wyndham social media platforms. I am interested to hear from those who attended. ■

More Wyndham youngsters will be able to learn to swim and tumble, thanks to a state government loan to the Belgravia Group to construct gymnastics and learn-to-swim facilities. Treasurer and Werribee MP Tim Pallas last week announced that a $5.35 million loan will be provided to the Belgravia Group through the Community Sports Infrastructure Loans Scheme. Werribee South war history find By Joanna Catalano Contractors have unearthed World War II cannon mounts in a carpark at Werribee South. The discovery took place as contractors were working on sealing the gravel carpark near the corner of Duncans and Beach roads. Local resident Nick Delios recognised the mounts as he was driving past the site. “Once you start digging, you find things,” said Mr Delios, who remembers playing on the mounts as a child. Mr Delios, 62, said the last time he saw the

mounts before their recent re-discovery was when he was 14 years old. He has strong memories of riding his bike around the site’s concrete. He said his father told him the cannons were established in 1941 and decommissioned in 1945, once the war was over, and the ammunition removed.
Mr Delios also described how his late grandfather saw the area develop during and after the war. “During the war there was a unit of soldiers that would sleep in tents in the farm to man the cannons,” he said. The carpark work remains on hold as Wyndham council considers the future of the site. Mr Delios said he hoped the site would be maintained. “History is something you want to keep,” he said. “Something with historical significance needs to be preserved.”

Marion punches on At the age of 87, Marion Ratnik is fighting fit. The Werribee grandmother has been attending a boxing class in Hoppers Crossing, run by instructor Marlene Mills, for more than 25 years. Mrs Ratnik said she enjoyed the camaraderie between members of her boxing class. “They’re very friendly, we’ve known each other for a long time,” she said. Mrs Ratnik – who can do 10 push-ups on her toes – was modest about her fitness level. “I try to keep up, I don’t like running but I keep up,” she said. “I’m also not a big fan of burpies.” Apart from the boxing classes, Mrs Ratnik said that she also visited the Victoria University gym in Werribee three times a week, where she does activities including lifting weights and high-impact exercise, in three hour-long sessions.
In addition to keeping fit, Mrs Ratnik said she enjoyed helping to care for her family. She is also a familiar face to many people in the community, after serving as an assistant principal and teacher at Werribee Secondary College for many years. Mrs Ratnik, who said she still does casual relief teaching at the college, said she started her career in education in 1953. She began teaching in New South Wales, before coming to Victoria in 1969. One night in emergency By Charlene Macaulay It’s 8pm on a Sunday night and the triage line is already four people deep at Werribee Mercy Hospital’s emergency department. Then there’s the people who have already been assessed and have been waiting – some for hours – for treatment. Among them is Joe (not his real name), who hit his middle finger with a hammer earlier that day while doing some paving work at home. He wasn’t too concerned about the injury at first but came to the ED when the swelling continued and is now waiting for an x-ray to ensure he hasn’t broken any bones. Then there’s 13-year-old Xavier O’Donnell, who accidentally stepped on a pair of secateurs when he and his brother were passing a lawn mower over a fence on their Hoppers Crossing property. The secateurs went in deep through the side of his right foot and he probably needs stitches. There are no available beds in the emergency department, so he too is in the waiting area waiting for an x-ray to check the extent of the damage. Nurse unit manager Lynn O’Neill said on any given day, the most experienced nurse in the ED is the triage nurse, because they decide which incoming patients can and cannot wait for treatment. From there, the second triage nurse will take any vitals – including blood – to help start treatment before patients are assigned to beds, if needed. Once through the double doors past the triage area, there are 15 bays – three of which are set aside for mental health patients and another three for resuscitation – all manned by the ‘fishbowl’, a glass-enclosed station where nurses and other ED staff take calls and do
general administrative tasks. The ED is staffed so that there is one nurse for three bays. For the resuscitation bays, the ratio is one nurse per bay. There is also a fast track area for patients presenting with minor injuries, a procedure room for minor procedures, a needle exchange, a 10-bed short-stay area and a behavioural

assessment room for those patients who are acting aggressively or in an agitated state and brought in by police. Ms O’Neill said drug and alcohol-affected patients were the biggest disrupters to the ED. In 2017-18, 40,846 people presented to the hospital’s ED, a similar number of presentations to St Vincent’s Private in the city and Footscray

Emilio is very alert and has a good heart-rate. The nurse suspects wind and recommends some home remedies for the new parents. Joe and Xavier are still waiting for their x-rays. The x-ray is being used in theatre. There are also backlogs in pathology this evening.

The average wait time tonight, according to assistant nurse unit manager Andrea Dennis, is four hours. Any time there’s less than a 12-hour wait is good, she says. What those in the triage waiting area can’t see are the patients that arrive by ambulance and enter the ED via a separate door to walk-in patients. Within a couple of hours, a person presented with a suspected stroke, there were two mental health patients – one requiring police assistance – and a woman who is 37 weeks pregnant and bleeding heavily. Then “the bat phone” rings, a direct line between hospital staff and emergency services, letting the ED know that an agitated patient who had to be shackled on scene was on his way. Sunday and Monday nights are the busiest for Werribee Mercy’s ED, but tonight was a quiet one, says Ms Dennis. On the busier nights, she has had to do

assessments in the hospital’s toilets because there have been no other rooms available. “Werribee is a happening place. Before the intensive care unit opened [earlier this year], the ED was the defacto ICU. It’s a lot of juggling in the ED with the resources that we have. “It’s only going to get busier.” As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, about $1 billion is needed to get Werribee Mercy to the size and capacity it needs to be to cater for Wyndham’s burgeoning population.
Mercy group chief executive Stephen Cornelissen said the hospital was in desperate need of its own paediatric ward, an expansion of the emergency department and additional surgical services, and was seeking a $170 million commitment over the next four years to continue expansion. Adjunct Professor Cornelissen said that while the hospital was grateful for its recent $93 million expansion, it was not enough to cater for current, and future, population growth.

Candidates push their policies By Charlene Macaulay Election promises and political pot shots flew thick and fast as Wyndham’s state election candidates campaigned for the local vote at a candidates forum last week. The Committee for Wyndham invited all candidates contesting the lower house seats of Werribee, Tarneit and Altona, and the upper house Western Metropolitan Region to the event, with 19 candidates in attendance. Each was given three minutes to have their say, followed by a question and answer session.
A number of candidates, including the Democratic Labour Party’s Kathryn Breakwell, said Wyndham residents were being treated with “neglect and contempt” by living in safe Labor seats. She said Labor’s promise to remove the Hoppers Crossing level crossing by 2025 – which is not within the next term of government – was “not good enough”. Independent Altona candidate Maria Aylward added: “Standing in fluoros and hard hats at election time is not getting things done, it’s buying votes”.
Other candidates – including Tarneit independent Arnav Sati, Greens Tarneit candidate Beck Sheffield-Brotherton and Greens Werribee candidate Jay Dessi – each said they did not expect to win their respective seats, but wanted to chip away at the strong Labor margins. Labor’s Tarneit candidate, Sarah Connolly, said the government had made significant investments in the area. Incumbent Werribee MP Tim Pallas said the Coalition invested $103 million in Werribee over 2010-14. He said in comparison, Labor has invested $1.5 billion over the past term.
“I accept the basic proposition that this is a community that needs more effort, more attention from government, and that’s exactly what this government is doing,” Mr Pallas said. Fellow Werribee candidate, independent Joe Garra, said it was debatable that the area is better now than it was 39 years ago, when it became a safe Labor seat. He said the Liberals had given up on the area. “You have a choice now. You can have a government representative looking after you, or have your own community representative looking after you.”
Nobel winner’s wisdom A Nobel Prize winner and former Australian of the Year discussed advances in medicine and the life of a scientist at the 2018 Barry Jones Oration last week at the Refectory at Werribee Park. Laureate Professor Peter Doherty AC had the audience in stitches with his engaging speech, which touched on breakthroughs made in molecular medicine and its result in people living longer and healthier lives, the trials and tribulations of a researcher and the need to invest in further research into alzheimer’s and dementia. Professor Doherty graduated from the University of Queensland in veterinary science and became a veterinary officer. He moved to Scotland and earned a PhD from the University of Edinburgh medical school. In 1996, he shared the Nobel Prize in Medicine with Swiss colleague Rolf Zinkernagel for their discovery of how the
immune system recognises virus-infected cells. He was Australian of the Year in 1997 and has since been commuting between St Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis and the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Melbourne. Professor Doherty said really good scientists tried to look at their research from the ground up, discarding prior knowledge. He said real insight often occurred when a person was relaxed and not focused on anything in particular. He encouraged people to “cultivate a bit of lost time” to achieve that state. The Barry Jones Oration, named after former Lalor MP Barry Jones, is an annual event run by Wyndham council to promote learning, skills and critical thinking. Hard work recognised By Charlene Macaulay Gone are the days of getting coffee and ordering the stationery – being an executive assistant now includes so much more. That’s the word from Point Cook resident Megan Green, who is in the running for the Executive Assistant of the Year award at CEO Magazine’s Executive of the Year Awards. Ms Green, who is executive assistant to the chief executive of Perfection Farms and joint managing director of the Victor Smorgon Group, has had more than 10 years experience in the industry and was an early adopter of encouraging paperless offices at her workplaces. “I did it at The Alfred, which is a fantastic achievement, and I’m working my way towards creating that paperless environment here,” she said. “Sometimes you can’t avoid paper, but as much as we can we try to keep things electronic.” Ms Green said she was surprised to be named a finalist in the awards, and believes being a good executive assistant is all about building a good relationship with the chief executive. “Your chief executive needs to be able to trust you with anything,” she said. “Obviously it’s about organisation, but I think it goes further than that. A good EA needs to be able to think a bit more strategically and provide that strategic asset as opposed to just administrative functions. “We need to be a confidant, we need to be able to sit there and be able to bounce off each other, and we need to put forward our own ideas – definitely taking it further than the old getting the coffees and the stationery.” The winners will be announced at an event on November 21.

Raise funds and get fit This bootcamp aims to whip you into shape and raise money for mental health. Point Cook’s Stronglife Health and Performance gym is calling on locals to sign up for its one-hour fitness bootcamp this Saturday, followed by a barbecue, a children’s play area with jumping castle and child care, and a gift pack for every participant. Co-owner David Chandler said the event is part of the gym’s plan to raise $5000 for Beyondblue over the month of November. Mr Chandler said a number of the business’s trainers and members have a strong personal connection to depression, anxiety or suicide. “We both have personal and family ties to mental illness, and have a large clientele with

MY WYNDHAM Life is in full bloom for Val Grasso. The Wyndham Vale resident has run Station Place Florist for the past 17 years and last year became a mum to daughter Liliana. As told to Charlene Macaulay. What’s your connection to Wyndham? I was born in Werribee, at the old hospital, but we used to live in Balliang. Our [wider] family has been in Werribee since the ’60s or ’70s with the egg farm. What are some of your earliest memories of Wyndham? No traffic! Going to the milk bar, I think it was called Bunny’s, which used to be on Cottrell Street, the set of shops where the IGA is. There used to be a massive milk bar, and you used to go and get your lollies, ice cream, and there used to be a servo on the corner too, and if you didn’t go to the milk bar you went there. And the fish and chip shop, that’s still there, but it’s not the same owners. It has to revert back to food, doesn’t it? Memories of food! (Damjan Janevski)
How much did it cost then to get some lollies or an ice cream? It was like 50 cents a bag, 20 cents maybe. Tell me about your family. I’ve got my daughter, Liliana, she’s 15 months, and my husband. How long have you been running the florist? Seventeen years. [My sister] Nella and her husband decided to buy a florist shop and saw an opportunity here. I’ve worked here from day one, learning the ropes. I didn’t know much
about floristry back then, but I’m still here! What’s your favourite flower? I love the sweet peas, orchids are always my favourite. I’m also seasonal – I like flowers when they’re in season. What’s your favourite thing about this area?

I love the local people that come in. You develop a friendship and they’re loyal. Where’s your favourite haunt for coffee or a meal? We generally go to TJays. If you could change one thing about this area,

Vandals caused an estimated $30,000 damage to this historic Werribee Park mansion over the weekend in what Mr Alex Bain, the estate’s manager, described as a soul-destroying experience. Big serves of fun, food and a generous spirit The Commercial Hotel on Watton Street looks, from the outside like everyone’s idea of a great local. Behind its doors, that’s exactly what it is – in quite a few ways. Under the helm of publican Colin Leake, the Commercial serves up a good night out, every night. Tuesday is all about a $15 wine and parmas; Wednesday is burgers and beer for $15; Thursdays, it’s steak and date night, as well as karaoke from 8pm; Fridays have a giveaway and trivia; Saturday is Punter’s Club in the sports bar (full TAB facilities and pool tables); and Sundays offer up $13 traditional roasts with all the trimmings. The a la carte menu ranges through all the pub grub faves, with a couple of entrees great for vegos, plenty of steaks and the obligatory golden snitch. The baby back barbecued ribs are a treat – they come with house-made apple slaw, charred corn and chips. The kids’ menu goes well past chicken nuggets, while the seniors’ menu includes classic lamb’s fry with bacon and fried-onion gravy alongside all the expected favourites. The Commercial has desserts. Good ones, such as sticky date pudding and warm apple oat crumble with custard, as well as indulgent churros and pavlova. Aside from the food and fun, Colin maintains a close eye on his community, wanting to contribute where he can. If you were in the pub a few months back, you might have seen the bar staff dressed up like the Werribee Bears rugby league club mascot. The Karma Keg was tapped and $750 was raised for the club. Head chef Robert Cini is now joined by Leanne Jones, a local mum-of-three and sous chef who brings 20 years of experience to the team. Together they have created this year’s Christmas menu, focusing on the theme of ‘family’. “Traditionally we would offer one of three options per course and each person would get their own plate of food,” Robert says. “We believe nothing means family more than sharing food together, so this year it will be a banquet style seating with traditional Aussie favourites. Every course will be served to your table so everyone gets to share in a bit of everything. “We also have options for strict dietary requirements off menu, all you need to do is ask. Magic of the Cup This year’s TAB Werribee Cup is shaping up to be one of the biggest and best in recent years, says Ashley Baker, general manager at Spendthrift Australia Park at Werribee. “This is the fourth year the Cup will be run on the second Sunday in December, a date now firmly fixed in the Country Racing Victoria calendar,” Mr Baker says. “And, more importantly, the Wyndham community has heartily embraced the date. “The Werribee Cup has a rich history, so a consistent date for community awareness is, we believe, vital to growing and re-establishing the Cup’s status as a leading country cup and sporting event.” Although the racing will take centre stage, Werribee Cup day is great for family, friends and work colleagues to hold Christmas parties when entertainment and fun are so plentiful. “Bookings are already up on previous years, with corporate packages for entertaining staff and clients proving very popular,” Mr Baker says. “There really is something for everyone on the day, children included.” The all-new Birdcage Cocktail Bar will be the scene of much fun, while the 18-35 year olds can dance the night away to the tunes of renowned DJ Spacey Space in the Park Hotel Garden Pavilion. The Diva Reserve on Marque Hill is a corporate area with prime elevated views of the racing. The marquees have their own bar, the same dining as enjoyed in the upstairs Committee Dining Room and full TAB access. Mini-marquees and umbrella packages are being snapped up and food and beverage offerings are upgraded across the entire course. “We’re also excited to see the return of Fashions on the Field,” Mr Baker says. “Cup ambassador Kate Watts (pictured) will be one of the judges and another is Tonia Tribe, a well-known Watton Street boutique owner. This much-loved event brings even more colour to the day and competitors make Werribee proud with their beautiful outfits.” As always, the Werribee Cup is super family-friendly. FB: How would you rate yourself as a cook? SH: I’m going to be brutally honest. I’m a pretty ordinary cook. I am very fortunate in that my wife is a very good cook. I tend to be the wingman that does all the other stuff … the cleaning up, the washing up, the putting away. FB: What is your signature dish? SH: I can stick cutlets into the oven. I can probably make a spaghetti bolognese. I’m probably one step above boiling an egg. FB: What is your favourite food? SH: I’m not massive on seafood but I do love prawns (as a starter). I love a good steak. I like good breads with dips. And cheeses! I’m mad on cheeses … a good creamy brie with quince paste to slather on top of it. Beautiful.

My hubby Kevin and I recently headed to Lara where we spent the most wonderful afternoon learning how to make cheese. Janet Clayton from Cheeselinks runs regular cheese making workshops, where participants can turn out several different types of cheese in the space of a few hours. Kevin and I were in charge of making the halloumi, which turned out beautifully. I pan fried it that night and served it for dinner on a bed of spinach with a drizzle of lemon infused olive oil and a balsamic glaze. We also made fetta, Romano, a soft goats cheese and ricotta, and were treated to a lovely lunch from Janet. Learning the whole process from scratch was a real eye opener. We came away with a whole new skill set, and the very tempting option of making our own cheese at home. Get together a group of friends and have a crack. SPORT Momentum swings Werribee’s way Werribee won the toss and batted on its home deck. Ford (50) and Dean (73) took their time early before cashing in as the game progressed, allowing O’Brien (20), James Freeman (21) and Chris Hennessy (23no) the chance to accelerate as the game wore on. With 209 to defend, the Werribee bowlers stuck to their task diligently, with Bradley Apps getting the key wicket of Ben MacRae (5) early. While just three Melton batsmen reached double figures, they were able to keep pace with the run rate for much of the day despite a steady stream of wickets. They eventually fell short, bowled out in the penultimate over for 187, with Adam Alifraco (3-19), Tim Gage (2-27) and Freeman (2-45) doing most of the damage. O’Brien said his side was starting to build momentum after its opening round loss. “If we can start playing our best cricket and stay ahead of the ledger, it will put us in a good spot come the end of the year.”
■ Williamstown Football Club is pleased with the announcement last week of a $1.5 million investment into facilities at the club. The money will be used to improve the changerooms for the women’s team and also to upgrade lighting at the ground. In other Seagulls news, it was sad to see Brent Szalay stepping down from the board after five years. A young family and increased business responsibilities means the former Spotswood premiership player can’t give the time and dedication he demands of himself in the role. The club is seeking nominations for the vacancy now via its website.

Good signs for next year By Ewen McRae The build-up to the 2019 VFL season continues to gather momentum for Werribee, with three more key players signing last week. Nick Coughlan was the headline signature of the week, with the former St Kilda-listed key defender signing up for a second season at the club after a strong debut season. He will be joined at Chirnside Park by Dom Brew and Max Augerinos, who both inked new deals to remain at the club. Coughlan said he was excited to commit to the club again, especially with former AFL premiership coach Mark Williams taking the coaching reigns. “It’s good to be back,” the 22-year-old said. “I’m hoping I can get a good pre-season in with all the boys and we can hit season 2019 flying. We were able to string some wins together at the end of the year, so I’m sure we’ll take a lot of confidence from that and build on it for next year. “We’re all very keen to get to know [Mark] a lot better and see what he brings with all the experience he has, and I’m sure we’ll feed off that.” After coming through the Murray Bushrangers TAC Cup system, Coughlan has played 41 VFL games across four seasons, including seven with Footscray in 2015 and 19 with Sandringham in his two years with the Saints. Persistent injuries denied him the chance of an AFL debut, but he bounced back in his first season at Werribee to play 15 games and finish eighth in the club best and fairest as an important key defensive foil for eventual best-and-fairest winner Sam Collins. Brew, 21, will be looking to further his reputation as one of the league’s best tacklers, with his 149 tackles at almost 11 per game this year placing him second in the competition. They included an incredible haul of 20 tackles in the wet against Collingwood in round 14. Augerinos, 21, returned from a ruptured ACL in round 12 this year. But he played just two more games for the season before returning to his local club (St Mary’s) at finals time. Werribee football operations manager Stuart Balloch said it was pleasing for the club to secure two more of its talented young players, backing Brew and Augerinos to rise to another level in 2019. “Dom is a hard inside player and brings a very good defensive aspect to our midfield,” said Balloch.

■ Western Jets coach of the last six years Torin Baker has made a significant career move, heading to Hawthorn as a development coach from next season. Baker has impressed many in his time in the TAC cup competition after his own playing days from suburban footy as a Spotswood premiership player and VFL at Werribee under Alastair Clarkson in 2000. Baker’s knowledge of the under-18 competition and the type of players it is developing will be invaluable in his new role. The Jets job will be keenly sought and is an ideal starting point for coaches with higher aspirations. The future of this competition and the VFL may change dramatically in the next few years as the control of the AFL and clubs is probably going to increase. ■ Yarraville, Hoppers Crossing, Werribee and Williamstown all recorded wins in sub district at the weekend but the big story was in VTCA, where Justin Baker scored his 20th century for the Yarraville Club Cricket Club as his team piled on a massive score (364) with Andrew Cullen also topping triple figures. At Hanmer Reserve the runs were flowing as well. Damith Priyadarshana dominated with 186 as Seddon set St Albans just on 350 to win. The bowlers have some work to do. ■ The November transfer window is open for local footy and there is already one big signing, with Brenton Quinn heading back to his junior club West Footscray as a playing assistant coach. Quinny is a great get for the Roosters and will be one of the driving forces for the club on and off the field. While it is great to see Josh Hill naming St Albans as his grassroots club when VFL duties allow, I would not expect to see the former Eagle and Bulldog too many times during the 2019 season.

St Mary’s and got some continuity back into his game … he certainly harbours desires to continue to improve and again be a regular fixture for us for 2019. “He’s someone who can flip into the midfield and also push forward to put some results on the scoreboard for us, so if he can bring the form he did in 2017, it’ll be pretty exciting.”

Werribee continued its form resurgence at the weekend, a century opening stand helping it secure a valuable sub-district south-west first XI win over Melton. With Andrew Ford and Shaun Dean putting on 118 for the first wicket, Werribee’s middle and lower order batsmen were able to bat with freedom to take their side to 6-209 from their 45 overs, before a well-balanced bowling performance delivered it the points. Werribee captain Tim O’Brien said it was a vital game and he couldn’t have been happier with the way it started. “Both sides were coming into the game 1-1 after two games, so it was a pretty big one for both clubs,” O’Brien said. “To put on 118 for the first wicket was brilliant … both those guys batted really well to set the game up. It was really important for us to have wickets in hand later in the day, because it was a hard wicket to get started on. “We felt like that was a pretty good score on that ground – and then we bowled well to back that up.”

Roller coaster innings for Point Cook A flurry of late wickets has Point Cook precariously placed in its Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 3 clash with East Keilor. Point Cook ended the day on 3-18, after enduring an up and down day with the ball to roll the visitors for 229. After East Keilor won the toss and elected to bat, the Point Cook bowlers were able to make early inroads as new ball pair Jaden Edmund and Sarwan Kumar were able to grab an early wicket each. Edmund added a third wicket before East Keilor enjoyed a strong 83-run partnership between Adrian Hallal and Amila Sandaruwan, but when Aaron Whear was introduced to the attack the game began to change. Whear knocked over Hallal for 36, and the visitors lost a steady stream of wickets through the middle of the day as Sandaruwan struggled to find a stable partner. Sandaruwan eventually fell for 99 to the impressive Kumar, and a crucial late 44 from Robert Rutley gave the scoreboard a stronger look.

Kumar (3-20 off 13 overs) and Edmund (4-74) were the standout performers with the ball, but disaster struck late in the day when Point Cook had to face six overs before stumps. Owen Doolan and James Peterson both made ducks, while Karan Kalia was trapped in front for just 4 to leave the home side in early trouble. Elsewhere, Seabrook was able to safely negotiate 13 overs late in the day, and will resume on 0-19 in its chase against Sunshine Heights. While Seabrook was largely able to curtail the home side’s batsmen, an aggressive ton from Tim Mahoney turned the game towards the hosts, with his 107 coming off just 97 balls and featuring 10 boundaries and seven maximums. Sunshine Heights was all out for 241 after 61 overs, before Seabrook closed out the day.
Hoppers Crossing’s first XI has continued on its winning ways, knocking over Ormond on Saturday to remain unbeaten in south-west first XI sub-district cricket. William Partington-Gardner was the standout batsman for the Cats, compiling a crucial 50 to guide his side to 9-174 from its 45 overs after winning the toss. Hoppers Crossing’s bowlers then put in a well-balanced effort to roll the visitors for 158, with Luke Goegan taking 3-33. The Cats, one of three unbeaten sides, will look to extend their streak against Elsternwick this weekend.

Werribee endured a heartbreaking loss to Fitzroy Victoria on Saturday, keeping it in eighth place on the division 1 pennant ladder. Despite winning three rinks, the loss in the final rink was big enough to consign Werribee to a two-shot loss 86 (12)-84 (6) loss. The match came down to the final bowl of the day, with Fitzroy Victoria claiming all the important shots and the overall win. Werribee will look to bounce back up the ladder when it visits Glenroy this weekend. In division 2, Hoppers could manage only one rink win in its match-up with Altona, falling to its third loss of the season. The 83 (16)- 71 (2) defeat leaves Hoppers in fifth place ahead of this week’s clash with seventh-placed Williamstown.

Werribee continued on its winning way over Bonbeach at the weekend, walking away with a comprehensive win to seal a 3-0 sweep. The Giants were clinical early as they ran in 10 runs in the first three innings alone while also keeping the hosts scoreless. The final 13-0 margin showed the gap between the two sides, with Werribee winning its first six games of the season. Werribee’s best a big hit By Ewen McRae The Beamish family enjoyed a proud night at the Werribee Hockey Club’s best-and-fairest celebrations, with siblings Jamie and Claudia creating history. Capping off a year in which the Werribee men’s team came from fourth to claim the Vic League 2 premiership and promotion, 17-year-old Jamie tied in the men’s award with teammate Matthew Skoglund, while 15-year-old Claudia capped off an impressive season to win the women’s award. Both were the youngest winners of their respective awards in the club’s 43-year history. For Jamie, it was the icing on the cake of a great year for his side. “It came as a bit of a shock really,” he said. “To be one of three people to win a best and fairest and a premiership in the one year at the club is a real honour. 58 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 7, 2018
“I had a good chat to Ross Cowlishaw, who’s won the last couple of these, and he said to just soak it in and really cherish this award along with the premiership.” The defensive rock had set his goals on promotion and said that was the driving force behind his career-best season. “I’d told a few of the guys in pre-season that I didn’t want to play Vic League 2 again, so the goal from the start was always a premiership and promotion,” he said. “To go from fourth, beating third, second and first to gain promotion, was pretty special. We got a lot of confidence from our back half of the season. “We had a really solid backline group, which meant I didn’t have to worry about anyone else and I could just play my role, which probably helped my game to excel.” For Claudia, the move to more of a midfield role this year paid immediate dividends.
“I actually expected our goalie to win it, so it came as a real shock,” she said of her award. “My coach moved me from the defence into the centre, so that helped me a lot, I think, and gave me a bit of freedom. “I was a bit out of it on the night and didn’t realise just what it meant to the club to win it so young. But afterwards, talking to a few people, it was pretty amazing.” The win had extra significance for Claudia, who is moving to premier league club Altona next season. “I umm’d and ahh’d about moving last year but decided to stick around, and I’m really glad I did, but I think the time is right now,” Claudia said. “I’ve been with the club my whole life, so it is hard to leave the place that got me into hockey and got me to the level I’m at, but I want to test myself and Altona is a good club to do that at so we’ll see how next year goes.”

Laverton Football Club has announced three new player signings ahead of the 2019 Western Region Football League season – including former Essendon player Anthony Long. Long was drafted by the Bombers in 2010 and spent three years with the club before an injury forced him into early retirement. All three players come to the club from the Northern Territory, with Long currently playing for St Mary’s. The other signings are three-time NTFL premiership player Jack Long and Banks Bulldogs player Hayden Duczek.
