Two ongoing police operations in the west have led to more than 850 arrests for crimes including armed robbery and aggravated home invasion, since May last year. A Victoria Police spokeswoman said 659 people had been arrested as a result of Operation Regnant since it started, while 197 people had been arrested as part of Operation Wayward in the past 17 months. Operation Regnant includes police patrols within Wyndham, Brimbank and Melton, while Operation Wayward has been focused on crimes including aggravated burglaries and carjackings in Wyndham, Brimbank, Maribyrnong, Melton and Hobsons Bay areas. The police spokeswoman said the Wayward taskforce was responsible for managing 78 “at-risk persons of interest”, including 31 currently in custody. Victoria Police chief commissioner Graham Ashton, speaking to radio station 3AW last week, said police were “continuing to arrest the same people again and again” and that a “core group” were continuously re-offending. He said police had increased night patrols in Wyndham and were engaging with offender’s families to ensure they comply with bail conditions. Mr Ashton was speaking after police released details of an aggravated home invasion in Habitat Court, Tarneit, on August 17. In that incident, four male youths followed a woman inside her house after she parked her car in the garage about 8.20pm. The youths, who were described as African in appearance, ransacked the property. One of the youths produced a machete and punched the woman in the face before demanding her vehicle, a black 2017 Hyundai Elantra Sedan. The youth drove away in the car, while his three companion fled on foot. The 34-year-old woman sustained facial injuries and was treated at the scene. In a separate series of incidents, Wyndham police are investigating four burglaries at primary and secondary schools in Werribee, Hoppers Crossing and Point Cook during August. Senior Sergeant Aaron Riches said the offenders, who have been described as Caucasian youths, were on pushbikes and had stolen “soft drinks, food, anything that’s not bolted down” from the schools. He said the burglaries tended to be committed after 8pm and the offenders usually gained access to school buildings via windows.
Nam Cao says he is looking forward to spending Father’s Day with his family. While Father’s Day is not traditionally celebrated in Vietnam, his parents’ country of origin, Mr Cao is planning on having a meal at home with his wife Chi and their children, seven-year-old William and four-year-old Anna on Sunday. “All the days in Vietnam are for women and kids, so it’s a good thing men get one here in Australia,” he joked. The Hoppers Crossing resident said his children inspired him to work hard, so he could help to support them. “With me, even with small things from the kids or family, everything makes me happy,” he said. “When I come back from work and get to the front door, the kids know the time I get home and they scream, ‘daddy, daddy, daddy,’ and that makes me happy.” Alesha Capone

Mia is on the money to the Max A young Hoppers Crossing girl has written a book to help raise money for a worthwhile cause. Eight-year-old Mia has penned a 12-page book titled Helping Max get to the Invictus Games. She said sales of the book will raise money to help nine-year-old Maxwell Pini – who has several conditions including heterotaxy (a complex congenital heart defect), aspleenia, central liver disease and cerebral palsy – watch his hero compete at the Invictus Games in Sydney in October. Maxwell, whose family lived in Point Cook but now live in Queensland, hopes to attend the games to watch Mark Daniels, an amputee who has become a household name since competing on the Ninja Warrior television show. Mia’s mother Andrea Kerr has started fundraising through her company Bento Kids, to help send Max to the games and buy him a new wheelchair. She said Mia came up with the idea of writing the book after seeing Max in a video. “I learned the words undefeated, unconquerable and tuberculosis to include in the book,” Mia said. “We hope to sell enough copies of the book to raise $200.” The book is being sold through the Bento Kids website for $5. Three dogs were surrendered to Wyndham council after one of the animals allegedly mauled a six-year-girl at a Tarneit property on Saturday. Channel Seven reported that the girl was mauled by a male German shepherd after she climbed out a window into her family’s backyard, where the dog was being kept. The girl was taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital in a serious condition, suffering from facial injuries. Wyndham city operations director Stephen Thorpe said the owner of the dog had surrendered it and two other German shepherds to the council. “Council will follow strict protocols and have the dogs assessed to determine if they should be put down,” Mr Thorpe said. He said the dog believed to be involved in the attack was registered with the council. According to Wyndham council’s Domestic Animal Management Plan, released last year, there were 19,366 dogs registered in Wyndham. Of those, 16 were deemed to be “dangerous”, while 11 were restricted breeds. According to the council report, the average number of dogs impounded annually is 978, of which 85 per cent are reunited with their families.

Clean-up order issued By Charlene Macaulay Wyndham council has taken legal action against the owners of a Hoppers Crossing property whose front lawn is littered with furniture, whitegoods and other items. When Star Weekly went past the property last week, there were various whitegoods – including at least three washing machines – a stove, furniture, tyres and other household items in the front yard of the property. A vacant neighbouring block had six cars in various states of repair.
Star Weekly has opted not to disclose the street name of the offending property. Wyndham city operations director Stephen Thorpe said the council had responded to a number of complaints “relating to litter and other issues� at the property. “We take these complaints very seriously and have issued infringement notices to the owner and taken legal action, some of which is ongoing,� he said. Nearly 2500 complaints have been made about unkempt properties across Wyndham since January 1, 2014.
Mr Thorpe said owners and occupiers were obligated to maintain the general amenity of their properties. “This includes ensuring that there are no piles of rubbish, overgrown grass, storage of vehicle parts, machinery or discarded building materials, among other things, on their properties,� he said. “Council works with landowners to ensure they are complying with these obligations and we use a range of enforcement actions – ranging from notices to comply, infringements and legal action – when needed.�

Wyndham recorded the highest number of debtors entering personal insolvency within the greater Melbourne area in the June quarter this year. There were 93 personal insolvencies recorded in Wyndham between April and June, according to the Australian Financial Security Authority. That compares with 80 personal insolvencies between January and March. Elsewhere in the west, Melton recorded 50 personal insolvencies in the June quarter (56 previously), Brimbank 40 (48 previously), Hobsons Bay 22 (20 previously) and Maribyrnong 14 (20). A partner in insolvency firm Jirsch Sutherland, Malcolm Howell, said increased levels of personal insolvency were due to a variety of reasons, but that credit card debt was a major cause. “While once we used to see credit card debts of $5000 or $10,000, it’s now not uncommon for me to handle bankruptcies involving people with four or five different cards, each of them having a debt between $20,000 and $30,000 in some cases,� he said. “We also see credit cards provided to young people starting their careers with little or no assets behind them and low income. Contract clause under review By Charlene Macaulay The state government will give more power to people buying property off-the-plan in a crackdown on developers. The government last week announced changes to off-the-plan contracts so they cannot be terminated under sunset clause provisions without the written consent of the purchaser, or by order of the Supreme Court. Currently, developers can exploit the sunset clauses by delaying construction of an estate to
terminate signed contracts of sale. They then re-sell the property for a higher price. As reported by Star Weekly in May, up to 100 buyers were affected by developer Grassylands Pty Ltd’s decision to trigger sunset clause provisions for the first three stages of land sold at Emerald Park estate, leaving buyers significantly worse off due to increased land values. At the time a Grassylands spokesman said it had invoked the sunset clause because it had been unable to have subdivision plans
registered with the land titles office by the required date. A group of 24 Emerald Park buyers who had their contracts revoked have now taken out an injunction against Grassylands. One of the buyers involved in the legal action, who wished to remain anonymous, said while the government’s changes won’t help those who have already had contracts cancelled, it was a positive step forward. Consumer Affairs minister Marlene Kairouz said: “We’re giving Victorians who buy
off-the-plan more control and peace of mind by cracking down on … developers.” Wyndham councillor Josh Gilligan branded the move “a good correction” that favours the buyer rather than the developer. “It’s a big win, a good result,” Cr Gilligan said. Consumer Affairs Victoria is investigating the correspondence received by Grassylands in relation to the delayed commencement of the Emerald Park development, according to Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard.
Overnight sensations Pupils at Truganina South Primary School swapped their uniforms for pyjamas and slept at school to help raise funds for charity last week. On Thursday, youngsters in grade 5 and 6, along with members of the school’s student representative committee, brought their sleeping bags to school to participate in the Vinnies School Sleepout. The St Vincent de Paul Society campaign aims to give students a glimpse into what homelessness can be like, in addition to raising awareness and funds for its services. On the night of the Truganina school’s sleepout, the students also took part in activities to help them understand the issue of homelessness in Australia. The school also held a food drive and collected non-perishable food items to donate to homelessness services. The school community raised $357 for the St Vincent de Paul Society during its sleepout.

y teenage son asks me why we have to do things we don’t like doing. Excellent question with a seriously flawed answer: Because we just do; everyone does. Really? Do we? Yes, we do. Why do sports teams seem to perform so much better when the coach is sacked or when the realisation hits that finals are out of the equation and they are just playing for pride or enjoyment? Is there a sports coach anywhere who would say he or she doesn’t care about the result, we will just go out there and have fun and see what happens? While Luke Beveridge didn’t say that in as many words, there was an element of that attitude in the Bulldogs’ 2016 premiership. The Bulldogs had already exceeded expectations by getting to the finals and every win after that was unexpected and a bonus. No pressure from within or outside. Why do politicians seem totally different people when they are unencumbered by the pressure and expectations of office?
What politician is game to say: “Forget the party rules, forget the past, forget the polls and the press gallery, we are going to get things done that matter and make a difference. We are not going to have the PR gurus spin what we say or have the image consultants change the way we look and sound. This is what we believe in and how we are going to go out and do it.” Truth is, many pollies and coaches have said versions of that, but virtually none have stuck to it. Why? Is it a lack of courage or self belief – or is it simply self-preservation and keeping your job? How many times has someone said to you, “I don’t need this job”, yet clung on for grim life to keep it? Then there are those that think their world is over when they lose their job, only to tell you six months later it was the best thing that ever happened to them. Really? Maybe Jack Nicholson was right in that movie A Few Good Men. We can’t handle the truth. ■

Police have arrested two men and two women, all aged in their 20s, after executing several search warrants across Wyndham last week. The arrests were the result of an investigation into the theft of several wireless security cameras. The offenders were charged with theft, handling stolen goods, committing offences while on bail, trafficking and possessing a drug of dependence and possessing property suspected as being proceeds of crime.

Regional park plan unveiled By Charlene Macaulay Werribee and Wyndham Vale could be home to one of three new regional parks proposed for Melbourne’s growth areas. The state government has proposed a 340-hectare park bordered by McGrath Road to the west, Heaths Road to the south-east and Hogans Road to the north. Provisionally dubbed the Werribee Township Regional Park, it will incorporate Werribee River and Presidents Park. The proposal is currently before the Regional Parks Standing
Advisory Committee, which will make its final recommendations to the state planning minister in October. If approved, the timing of the development would depend on the public acquisition of a number of parcels of land. The proposed park is one of three new metropolitan parks being developed across Melbourne’s growth corridors to boost open space. The other parks are proposed for Clyde and Kororoit Creek. While Wyndham council supports the creation of the park, it has raised concerns
about the park’s boundaries, arguing the proposed boundary is inconsistent with precinct structure planning and development. The council is also concerned that more than 98 per cent of the park is planned to be at or below the 100-year flood line. Cr Tony Hooper said while the park would make a significant contribution to Wyndham’s environment and liveability, this deviation of boundaries had far-reaching implications for … the planned road network, potential discrepancies with approved subdivisions and other infrastructure considerations.
“Defining the boundary and the proposed removal of the unemcumbered land available for recreation before detailed design by the state government could adversely impact the delivery of the Growling Grass Frog Masterplan,” he said. “It could also limit the ability to plant trees to meet council’s targets of canopy coverage within the city’s [environmental strategies].” Cr Heather Marcus said that as housing lots grew smaller, it was important for families to have parks to play in.

A walk on the wild side rhinoceros sculpture and a large giraffe swing. “The new Safari Park at Cornerstone is the result of a very innovative design process and the result is a fantastic new recreational space that will be enjoyed by the community for many years to come,� Mr Gore said. The Safari Park will be launched at a special event at the park on Saturday, September 15 between 1pm and 3pm. The launch will include free food, drinks and safari-inspired activities.
Children will be able to go wild at a new park in Wyndham, which has been inspired by the Werribee Open Range Zoo. The Safari Park has been built as a collaboration between the developers of the Cornerstone Werribee estate, Peet, and the popular website Mamma Knows West. The park includes giant animal sculptures, a colourful safari-inspired playground and picnic areas. Coast guards on the heart beat By Charlene Macaulay Werribee Coast Guard volunteers are now in the business of saving lives both in and out of the water. They have joined Victoria’s growing community of GoodSAM responders, which will allow them to provide lifesaving assistance to locals suffering a cardiac arrest. Werribee Coast Guard commander Bruce Lawrence said a volunteer in the immediate vicinity of a call-out who is signed up to the
GoodSAM app might be the quickest available first responder. “We carry formal marine certifications and, of course, one of those certifications is first aid and CPR,” he said. “All of our crew have that and because of that, we can assist Ambulance Victoria when we’re off duty and we’re around. “In Werribee there’s 30 of us running around every day doing what we do … it extends out the capabilities of a first responder for Ambulance Victoria.”

Werribee is one of 19 Coast Guard branches across the state signed up as GoodSAM responders. Ambulance Victoria chief executive Tony Walker said the Coast Guard volunteers joined off-duty paramedics, firefighters, surf
lifesavers, doctors, nurses and many other trained first responders. “We know that the sooner a person in cardiac arrest receives CPR and defibrillation, the better the chance of survival,” he said. Australian Volunteer Coast Guard vice-captain of search and rescue operations Adam O’Neill added: “Our volunteers join Coast Guard because they want to help in times of need. GoodSAM gives us an opportunity to provide a broader emergency response beyond our waters – it’s a great initiative.”
Weavers of tradition Traditional Karen bamboo basket weaving will be one of the many activities featured during the Wyndham Learning Festival. The festival, which will be held from Saturday, September 1, to Saturday, September 8, will include hundreds of events for residents of all ages. This will be the annual festival’s third year. It is organised by the Wyndham Community & Education Centre with support from Wyndham council. At the centre on Tuesday, September 4, men and women from Wyndham’s Karen community will demonstrate traditional bamboo basket weaving from 12.30-2pm. One of the expert craftsmen, Pah Duh, said he started weaving when he was about 11. Through a translator, Mr Duh said: “I learned from my parents father, uncle and relatives – everyone wove so I learned by watching them. I love weaving … when I make something like a basket, rather than buying one or borrowing
one, when I want to give someone a gift, I have my own handmade basket to give them.” Centre chief executive Jennie Barrera said the learning festival would also feature a digital photography bus tour, a walk with the Werribee Riverkeeper, robotics, Latin and African drumming and a Japanese tea workshop. “The Wyndham Learning Festival plays a significant role in bringing people together with a focus on lifelong learning across the municipality,” she said. Cheers to a fine drop By Charlene Macaulay This drop of red from Werribee’s Shadowfax Wines has been judged one of Australia’s finest. The 2017 Little Hampton pinot noir won gold at the Sydney Royal Wine Show recently, just months after being bottled back in February. Chief winemaker Alister Timms said it was the first time the pinot noir had been entered into a competition. “It was really exciting, there was only five

golds for the whole thing and there were some great wines in there,” he said. “The judges said it was a very strong class and they really did like the fragrance and the fine tannin in the wine. “It’s good to get some sort of reward for all the work we’ve done over the years.” The pinot noir grapes are grown at the winery’s Little Hampton Vineyard in the Macedon Ranges, which the Shadowfax team has been cultivating for the past six years. Pinot gris grapes are also grown on the site.
Mr Timms said the vineyard, which is 720 metres above sea level, is one of the coldest in the Macedon Ranges and is responsible for the wine’s “lovely fragrance and elegance”. “It’s the most challenging [to make], but it could be the most rewarding as well. You’ve got to do a lot of work in the vineyard to get it right.” He said the wine, which has a bouquet of floral violets and rose petal, bolstered by blueberry and raspberry fruits, was best paired with duck dishes.
Wyndham councillor Tony Hooper will run in this year’s state election after an online survey uncovered overwhelming support for an independent candidate. Cr Hooper said he made the decision to contest the seat of Altona after collating the results of an online survey he ran over July and August to find out what issues were important to locals and what they expect from a local MP. A total 96 per cent of respondents said they wanted to be represented by a “strong and effective independent voice”. The survey attracted 325 responses, and 74 per cent of respondents were from Point Cook. Traffic congestion, better public transport and more schools topped the concerns of respondents. Cr Hooper, who was elected to Harrison ward in the 2016 election, said he was keen to advocate on these matters at a higher level of government. “All of these I have championed for years and it’s just not good enough that the major parties haven’t delivered,” he said. “People are proud of their community but want local solutions, not party politics.” Cr Hooper is the first Wyndham councillor to throw his hat in the ring for a state seat. A brush with fame A Point Cook artist is riding the crest of a big year of art shows and exhibitions. Khalid Jamil Khateeb says a painting currently on exhibition at the Islamic Museum of Australia is the icing on the cake, after recently taking part in the Bayside Arts Festival, the Moonee Valley Art Show and Camberwell Art Show. He’s also had a painting inspired by the area around Werribee South beach previously shortlisted in the Wyndham Art Prize. Khateeb said he was thrilled to have this latest landscape painting feature in the Australian Muslim Artists exhibition. “There are only 19 artists across Australia [featured in this exhibition], and I am one of them,” he said. “That’s a very good feeling.”
Islamic Museum of Australia general manager Ali Fahour said the exhibition represented the diversity of the Australian-Muslim experience through works from new migrants and second and third generation Australians. Khateeb grew up in Karachi, Pakistan, before moving to Australia in his late 20s. The digital marketing specialist said he had been painting for much of his life, but still considered his art a hobby. “I’m not the kind of artist that produces a lot of work,” he said. “I just paint something when I want to paint.” The Australian Muslim Artists exhibition is on display until October 15. Emergency hero acclaim By Charlene Macaulay Wyndham’s emergency services heroes have been thanked for their unwavering commitment to the community. Wyndham council last week honoured about 150 police, paramedics, firefighters, coast guard officers and State Emergency Service volunteers at its annual emergency services dinner, held this year at Encore Events Centre. Werribee Fire Brigade captain Michael Wells, Werribee police Inspector Marty Allison
and Victorian Emergency Management Commissioner Andrew Crisp were among the attendees. Safer communities portfolio holder Kim McAliney said there had been about 36,000 calls to triple-0 for fire, ambulance and police assistance across Wyndham in the past six months. She said that as Wyndham was one of the fastest growing areas in Australia, the challenges of servicing it were immense. “The job of protecting people from natural and man-made incidents is one that takes an
incredible amount of dedication,” Cr McAliney said. “The people that respond to these calls are mothers, fathers, sons and daughters who sacrifice time with their families and loved ones to ensure that we can make it home to ours. “The fact that they risk their own lives and dedicate so much of their time and energy to keep us all safe is truly amazing and deserves to be recognised. “Many are volunteers that need to get up and go to work every day after serving their community, which shows incredible dedication.”
The Environment Protection Authority Victoria has fined a construction company $7929 for discharging sediment-laden water into a conservation zone near Davis Creek in Tarneit. Campbellfield-based Winslow Constructors was fined after discharging the water into an area which is home to the endangered growling grass frog. EPA metro manager Emma Roper said a community member’s report to the EPA pollution hotline sparked a joint investigation between the authority and Wyndham council, at the Tarneit construction site. Ms Roper said after EPA and council offers attended the Tarneit construction site they discovered a pump discharging sediment-laden water. She said that sediment-laden water had the potential to pollute local waterways and damage fish and vegetation. Winslow Constructors have the right to have the EPA’s decision to issue the infringement reviewed or have the matter heard by a court. Residents can report pollution by calling the EPA’s 24-hour pollution hotline on 1300 EPA VIC (1300 372 842). Alesha Capone

EPA metro manager Emma Roper said that during rainfall it was “easy” for top layers of soil to be washed away from cleared and levelled land stripped of its groundcover and plants. “It It ma may just look like mud, but high levels of
sediment in waterwa waterways can kill aquatic plants, interfere f with fish and fro f g breeding, and, in extreme cases, smother the underwater habitat, suffocating ff fish and many smaller waterbornespecies,” Ms Roper said. “The sediment also catches in low-lying areas, clogging drains, and probably getting your new neighbours offside.” Ms Roper said prevention was better than cure and encouraged all propertyy developers to be mindfu df l off their potential impact on the environment.
“New residential and commercial developments are occurring all over the state so if everyone has the attitude of, ‘It’s only a little bit’, it will really take its toll. “Careful design and efficient construction sequences can minimise site disturbance as well as save money. y “Clear onlyy the necessary areas, preserve as much grass as possible and schedule clearingg to occur as close to the beginning off construction as possible.” Ms Roper said that in addition to property

The couple, who had always planned to adopt, switched to fosteringg when they realised just how big the need ffor carers was. “The amount of people on the wait list for adoption is huge, but there’s not manyy kids up ffor adoption, whereas ffoster care is the other way ay around – there’s so many kids that need it, but there’s not enough carers,” Amanda said. “It was a very easy decision once we found that out.” Chris added: “It is just the two of us in a large home. There is no doubt about the important role that Emergency Services play in our community. Whether this involves law enforcement, rescuing people or animals, saving lives and property and keeping the whole community safe, there are literally hundreds of local stories that can be told every single week in Wyndham. So it was wonderful to send our dedicated Emergency Services groups and people our sincere appreciation on behalf of our community. In my comments on the night I mentioned that while their educational and advocacy efforts often go unnoticed, Council and our community appreciates their community awareness and prevention programs that improve safety and health, as well as reducing accidents and incidents. Wyndham continues to grow, so too does the demand on our Emergency Services groups and people. Building new life skills By Charlene Macaulay The humble Lego is being used as the building block to communication in a unique program being offered at Gateways Support Services. The Werribee service has been running Lego Mates small group therapy sessions during school terms for primary school-aged children on the autism spectrum. Sharon Bassett from Gateways Support Services said the program helped to boost social skills and learning among its participants.

Ms Bassett said the children were encouraged to practice turn taking, sharing and joint problem solving in each session. “It’s for kids who are attending mainstream schools, but are having difficulty with those social interactions,� she said. “They get together in groups of two or three and they each have a role to play – someone’s the builder, someone’s the engineer, and someone’s the supplier – and they swap roles. “It’s about not going in and being able to dominate [the play], it’s about taking turns, listening to other people’s ideas, working together.� Ms Bassett said as well as making Lego creations, the group also works together to create a stop-motion movie. She said Gateways was looking at running a Hanen program, which focuses on language and skills, for younger children on the autism spectrum for term four. Tarneit teen’s big break An online drama series starring Tarneit teenager Marina Diraki has been picked up by Channel Nine and Amazon Prime. Diraki, 19, was last year cast in the second series of Counter Play Play, a series focused on wealth and corruption in three families living in the fictional beachside town of South Point. The show is filmed in Melbourne locations including Brighton. Diraki said she and the other cast members were “absolutely shocked” to hear the program had been bought by Channel Nine and Amazon Prime. “We screamed and couldn’t comprehend that all of our hard work would be shared with our home country as well as worldwide,” she said. She said they did not know the exact date the
show would go to air on Channel Nine, but that it would most likely be this year. Counter Play made its debut on Amazon Prime earlier this month. Diraki said she was “both excited and nervous” to see herself on television. William Abur is smiling from ear to ear after finally completing his latest academic challenge – his PhD. The Hoppers Crossing resident has graduated with a doctorate after spending the past four years researching the migration and settlement of South Sudanese refugees in Melbourne at Victoria University. Dr Abur said his background as a social worker working with the South Sudanese community had prompted the research. Dr Abur found young refugees who had developed deep social interactions with their new community – such as joining a sporting group – fared better than those that had not. Similarly, adults who worked formed better connections with their new community. “I looked at the benefits, the challenges and the possibilities that may assist those newly-arrived refugees to settle better,” he said. It’s a topic that Dr Abur has had first-hand experience with. Born in South Sudan, he lived in Kenya for 10 years before coming to Australia in 2006 as a refugee on a humanitarian visa. Dr Abur said he enjoyed a brief “honeymoon period” when he first moved to Australia, then struggled with adjusting to a new life in a new country. He has spent the past three years as an African liaison officer at Thomas Carr College, where he helps to bridge the gap between the

expectations of school and parents in the education system. Now, he is keen to work with either the government on migration and settlement, or in education to help schools understand the challenges facing, and support, newly-arrived communities.

MY WYNDHAM Richard Dove is the settlement services co-ordinator at the Wyndham Community & Education Centre in Werribee. He chats with Alesha Capone. Tell me about yourself. I was born in Wyndham and I lived in Tower Road, Werribee until I was aged three, then mum and dad moved to Geelong. My dad’s two older brothers, Robert and Dennis Dove, were fairly well known in Werribee. Uncle Dennis used to manage the Werribee Football Club, and he and Uncle Robert owned Dove’s Sports Store. Uncle Robert also opened up Dove’s Toy Kingdom on Watton Street. My mother came from America with her family and went to Werribee High, where she met my dad. Dad worked at the Board of Works for 21 years. I grew up going to the old Werribee Farm barn dances and Christmas gatherings. After I joined Victoria Police in 1990, I was stationed at the Werribee station from 1993 to 1997. I later became a multicultural liaison officer for the west of Victoria, I had a lot to do with Werribee in that time. The Werribee Community Centre (now the WCEC) was here and I worked very closely with them. They were running the Wyndham Humanitarian Network and I ended up chairing a number of sub-groups. In 2008 we held a big Sudanese community forum and created a report, which won a national award. We brought together the South Sudanese community and took down all their issues – with health, employment, youth, education – and created the report as a way to go forward.
What changes have you seen occur in Wyndham? One would be population, Wyndham used to finish at Sayers Road. The other thing that’s changed is all the different cultures who need settlement help – not just refugees, but everyone. It doesn’t need to be called settlement, but everyone needs a way to feel as if they belong. What do you enjoy about working at the WCEC? I started here in March 2017. I wanted to get back to working closely with the community. We run lots of programs and link in with many other organisations. Refugees need settlement because they mostly come from rural areas. Some have never spent time in a classroom, so they don’t know English. It’s about giving them a hand up. We have goodwill here – we tend to look at what we can do, rather than what we can’t do. What else do you enjoy? I’ve been with Western Union Writers, which started in Werribee, since 2009. Writing is my other passion. I’ve finished one book, which I’m trying to get published, and am half way through another.

A craft festival will be held in Centenary Hall, Werribee over the weekend November 11 and 12 with the purpose of encouraging and developing crafts in the local area. The festival will have the support of the State Government through the Ministry of the Arts in the second of a series of tri-annual art festivals during 1978, centred on “The Crafts”.
The old Werribee Railway Station building will get an $800,000 facelift in March, next year, the Minister for Transport Mr Jim Kennan announced last Wednesday. It will be the first major works to the railway station building and platform for the past 30 years.
The Mercy Hospital is tendering to operate a $1 million mother and baby unit at Werribee to help women overcome debilitating post natal depression disorders. The hospital wants to set up an eight-bed unit for women who suffer the disorder and become dysfunctional after giving birth.
Sixteen jobs will disappear at the Department of Primary Industries research farm as part of a restructure of its Victorian sites. A piggery at the Sneydes Road site, home to Victorian research and development on pig production, will come to a close as part of the proposal.

Wayapa’s healing message for all Rowena Price says Wayapa re-connects people to country and spirit, creates physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing and can be practised anywhere. “The practice of Wayapa combines mindfulness, traditional Aboriginal movements and a narrative meditation in a series of 14 elements to teach participants the importance of connecting into the earth and nature for holistic wellness,” she says. “Anyone can do it, anywhere and of any physical ability.” Rowena, a Yorta Yorta/Palawa woman, will showcase the Wayapa program at the Wyndham Learning Festival, which will run from September 1-8 and is supported by Wyndham council. Rowena explains that Wayapa teaches earth, mind, body and spirit wellness. “Over the years, for various reasons, I had become completely disconnected to myself, country, culture and community,” she says. “Both my mental and physical health were in very bad shape. Wayapa has provided me with a holistic way of healing. It is both simple and yet quite complex in its teachings and message.” In 2013, Jamie Thomas and Sara Jones founded the Wayapa Wuurrk program, which translates to “connect country” in the Gunditjmara and Gunnai peoples’ languages. Jamie, Sara and their trained staff members conduct re-connection programs based on what they describe as “a contemporary version of traditional culture and knowledge whilst respecting country, culture and community”. “The programs are preventative, long-term and community-driven, focusing on holistic wellbeing and cultural strengthening,” Sara says. Help and much more for Suzanne’s family Suzanne Shaw met her late husband, Fred, in 1974, when both of them were in the navy – Suzanne a WRAN in stores and Fred a leading seaman in communications. They married and had three children – Hayley, Candace and Anthony. Fred died in 1998 after a lengthy battle with a rare neurological condition, leaving Suzanne a widow at 40. That’s when Legacy stepped in. Suzanne says that when Legacy offered its incredible help, it was an enormous help in so many ways. “Legacy assisted with the children’s education expenses and offered emotional support,” she explains, “But it was how the organisation gave the kids their own Legacy ‘family’ that really stood out. “They got to go on camps and meet other kids going through the same thing. They had like-minded peers who didn’t ask questions, didn’t judge. It gave them a freedom to just be normal kids.” Suzanne also organised a younger widows’ support network through Legacy. “When our kids went away to camps, we did our own thing together,” she says. “We organised trips and formed nurturing relationships that we all sorely needed. And we had fun.” The experience Suzanne and her children went through in nursing Fred through a terrible disease impacted them all. Suzanne works as a community liaison person at Monash and Royal Melbourne hospitals, a role she found through Brainlink, an agency supporting families facing neurological issues such as Fred’s. “All the children have soft hearts and an ability to empathise,” she says. “Anthony, who was just 10 years old when his dad passed away, works with children with disabilities, and Candace wants to give back by becoming a Legatee herself.” Suzanne is secretary of the western branch of Legacy, which meets bi-monthly at Werribee and Altona RSLs. “We have almost 600 widows in the western region, with just seven Legatees to support them. We would love to get more locals involved – they can contact me on 0425 872 079,” she says.

LUCY HOLMES BREAKFAST HOST, 89.9 LIGHT FM FB: How would you rate your cooking skills? LH: On a scale of one to 10, I’d say a solid seven. I’m not brilliant, but I’m pretty competent! I enjoy cooking from recipes, I need to follow a detailed plan! Having said that, if there’s more than 10 ingredients I tend to give it a miss and I’ll start thinking about Uber Eats. FB: What is your signature dish? LH: My favourite throw together dish is a big Mexe-salad bowl. I’m vegan so I use black beans for my protein, then everything else you can imagine! FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? LH: My entree would be something simple like a beautiful fresh bruschetta covered in fresh tomatoes, basil and olives with a balsamic glaze. The main would have to be a dish I made the other night which I love! It was this beautiful marinated Portobello mushroom meal. The marinade is soy, balsamic vinegar and olive oil, and it’s mouth-watering. You roast some vegies like Brussels sprouts, add a creamy garlic mash and then drizzle with the leftover marinade. It is heaven. For dessert, a simple (vegan) chocolate cake with almond ice cream.
CRAZY FOR CLINKERS I had to laugh when a recent guest on the Food Bytes podcast – former champion jockey Simon Marshall – shared with us his passion for Clinkers, those randomly coloured, crunchy choc-coated treats many of us would remember from our childhood. Simon loves them so much, one of his favourite go-to desserts is his own home-made Clinkers ice cream, which simply entails softening a tub of vanilla ice cream, adding crushed up Clinkers, and popping it back in the freezer. I know people who do a similar thing with crushed up Mint Slice biscuits, adding a dash of green food colouring to the vanilla ice cream to give it a ‘spearmint’ appearance. Do you have your own DIY ice cream recipe? I’d love to hear about it.
FB: What is your favourite TV food show and who is your favourite TV food person? LH: I was once a celebrity contestant on Ready Steady Cook … and I won! It was so much fun. I absolutely adore Matt Preston though. He came to see my 100% Kylie Show once, and he was the loveliest guy! Plus, he’s a snazzy dresser. FB: What is your favourite food? LH: I love Thai, Indian and Mexican … don’t make me choose! I love all the complex tastes and I love that all of them have incredible vegie and vegan options. Window is open for that first home The task of buying a first home is still monumental – but a window of opportunity has cracked open as prices soften and market dynamics shift, according to UBS economist Carlos Cacho.

“For first-home buyers who have got their finances in order and have strong credit, it’s certainly a good opportunity,� Mr Cacho says. “But I’d say it’s probably going to get better.� Melbourne house prices have dropped 1.8 per cent to July 31 but still managed a thin annual gain – expected to turn negative soon – while units posted a fall in the quarter. So, first-home buyers may find some wind in their sails but buying in a falling market presents its own challenges. “If you overpaid 24 or 36 months ago it wasn’t too much of a problem, because within a couple of months, you’d already made that capital back in appreciation,� the economist says. “If you overpay now it could be years before you retrieve that extra payment.� The best approach for first-time buyers keen to wade into one of the most-talked about property markets in the world is to keep an eye out for areas of distress in the market, which should be presenting themselves soon.
“There are going to be good opportunities that come up,� Mr Cacho says. “And that may be a seller who has an interest-only mortgage and is switching to principal and interest and can’t afford the repayments and so has to sell by a certain date. “A case like that could provide an opportunity [for first-home buyers].� Data shows first-home buyers are bolstering their position in the market, in particular filling a hole left by falling demand from foreign buyers. “First-home buyer demand continues to offset a reduction in demand from owner-occupiers and foreign buyers, with state government incentives and moderating prices also likely playing a role in helping first-home buyers move onto the property ladder,� NAB chief economist Alan Oster says. So, with market dynamics finally giving first-home buyers something to work with, the question is when should they make the move? Most economists, UBS included, expect capital city prices to weaken further before hitting bottom.

just defended well and played terrific hockey. We scored second and third goals, so that made it even more sweeter.” Caitlin Spence and Catherine Munro fired in the Werribee goals that will keep them in Vic League 1 next season. The Tigers will have a new look next season. After 16 years on-and-off involvement with the club, McAlinden has announced he will be stepping down from the coaching position. Young gun Claudia Beamish looks set for a move to Altona to try her hand at the Women’s Premier League. McAlinden is hoping the next coach can bring Vic League 1 success to Werribee. “To get them up to Vic League 1 and sustain it for this year was terrific,” McAlinden said. “So they’re going in the right direction.” Werribee finished the men’s Vic League 2 regular season with a 5-1 win over ECHO. Bears in epic territory By Lance Jenkinson Werribee Bears are on the verge of a rare accomplishment in NRL Victoria first-grade rugby league. The Bears will bid to become just the third club in first-grade history to achieve a three-peat when they square off with Sunbury Tigers in the grand final at Haines Drive Reserve this Saturday. Only the legendary Altona Roosters team that collected four consecutive premierships from 2003-06, part of a run of seven titles in 10 years, and the Waverley Oakleigh Panthers, who won three straight between 1992-94, have achieved the magical three-peat. The motivation for Bears half-back Phil Pese is to do it for the Bears loyal supporters. “Hopefully, we can get the three-peat as a sign of thanks to our family and friends who come out to watch in the rain and cold all winter,” he said. While Werribee is a win away from climbing to the top of the mountain for a third consecutive season, it will be a vastly different line-up to those that enjoyed nail-biting grand final wins over Casey Warriors in the past two seasons. There are enough Bears with grand final experience to have a little edge over Sunbury going into the grand final, but it will not be the finals-hardened team that claimed back-to-back premierships. “The club has been into four consecutive grand finals now,” Pese said. “There’s a handful of us experienced ones who know what to expect in a grand final, but about 85 per cent of the team is young and new, so they’re going to have their butterflies and little jitters. “We’ve got enough experience in certain position that they’ll be able to manage that.” The Bears’ past two grand finals have been heart-stoppers. They beat Casey 14-10 in 2016 and the same team 20-18 a year later. It would be no shock if this year’s decider also went down to the wire. The past two meetings between Sunbury and Werribee have been decided by a try or less, with the Bears winning on both occasions, including a two-point semi-final victory. Pese is confident the Bears’ systems will stand up on the biggest stage again. “Our team is going into the grand final with confidence, but we don’t overplay our 54 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 29, 2018
IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ Another football home and away season has come to an end. The lucky ones still involved can enjoy, or should enjoy, the fruits of their labours with the satisfaction of being in a finals campaign. For those at junior level, it is all over with hopefully many good memories and experiences to look back on, regardless of the results. I believe we have taken much of the enjoyment out of underage football by becoming talent scouts rather than coaches who build team spirit, values and goals. Too many people talk about this kid or that one, but few ever mention a great team. Like so many things in society today, it is too much about the individual. Team sports such as footy need to address its direction before it completely erodes the whole ethos of the game. ■ I mentioned Sunshine Kangaroos senior coach Brendan Hallinan last week as he has moved on from Kinder Smith Reserve. He is not the only senior coach in the WRFL on the move. Albion’s Chris O’Keefe, one of the most decorated players in the competition, has left, as has St Albans’ Brad Murphy and Wyndhamvale’s Daniel Bunworth. Coaching at suburban level has never been more time consuming and demanding. The quest for success adds yet another layer of expectation. Anthony Eames has re-signed at Spotswood and it will be interesting to see if five-time premiership coach Marc Bullen goes around again at Deer Park. Saade Ghazi has taken his Altona side to top spot and his business interests are always a factor in planning for the future. Forty per cent of the coaches gone and that is only division one! ■ Kevin O’Neill has called a day to his involvement as a trainer at the Western Bulldogs after 26 years. That is a huge body of work and a commitment that warrants recognition, which Kevin received when made a Life Member of the club. The end of any season sees change but it is good to see people bow out gracefully – not pushed – as is so often the case. ■ Coming soon to the WRFL website and social media platforms is a series I have been involved with called The Icons. These recently recorded interviews include umpires, Barry Priest medallists, WRFL life members, a women’s panel, a footballing family and the men behind the success of Deer Park. They were fun and fascinating to do, I hope you enjoy them.

Werribee was under immense pressure to keep hold of its Hockey Victoria women’s Vic League 1 berth – and did so with a stirring come-from-behind 3-1 win over Brunswick at President’s Park on Saturday. The Tigers knew they would keep their spot in the second tier of Victorian hockey if they could avoid losing to the Wicks by two or more goals. Tigers coach Les McAlinden tried to keep his players calm and they appeared to be relatively relaxed entering the match – until Brunswick took the lead and panic stations set in. “There was a lot riding on the game, but we tried not to focus on the result we had to get,” McAlinden said. “I said to the girls, ‘Just go out and enjoy yourselves, it’s just another game, don’t stress about the outcome’. It was stressful for a while after Brunswick scored first.” One goal either way would have a dramatic effect on the game. If Brunswick got the next goal, it might have broken Werribee’s resolve. If Werribee got it, they were almost certainly remaining in the division next season.

Altona stakes its claim with minor premiership A season-ending foot injury to versatile forward Mitch Turnbull made it a bittersweet feeling for Altona on the day it wrapped up the minor premiership in the Western Region Football League division 1 on Saturday. The Vikings will enter the finals in pole position, the first side not named Deer Park to do so since the Vikings did it in 2012. That year, the Vikings went on to win the premiership in a one-point grand final thriller over Spotswood, so they will be hoping history repeats. If the Vikings are to climb back to the top of the mountain, they will have to do it without Turnbull. Turnbull suffered a broken foot in the early stages of Saturday’s win over Hoppers Crossing that determined which side would finish on top. He flew up for the mark and landed awkwardly – his season finished right there and then.
It is a huge blow for the Vikings – not only for their structure on the field, of which Turnbull is a significant part, but also their vibe off it, though you can bet that Turnbull will not be too far away from his teammates if his health allows it. Vikings coach Saade Ghazi was downcast about the Turnbull diagnosis. “It’s a bit disappointing, not just because he’s a good player, but more so because he’s the heart and soul of the footy club,” he said. “He came up all the way through the juniors, so it’s sad for him [not to be involved in the finals]. “He’s a leader around the club, he organises the raffles and the footy trips and he’s a very good player as well. “I don’t like to see guys miss games of footy, especially guys who have put in a lot of time around the footy club like he has. As we know, it’s all part and parcel of the game.” Altona has earned a week off in the first week
of the finals after their impressive 15-3 season. The Vikings will await the winner of the qualifying final between Deer Park and Hoppers Crossing at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday. Altona goes into the finals with confidence stemming from the 36-point win over Hoppers Crossing. The best part of the victory for the Vikings was the form of talls Luke Goetz in the ruck and Jayden Post at centre half-back. “Luke probably played his best game for the footy club,” Ghazi said. “Posty’s been one of our better players all year and we probably haven’t rewarded him with being in our best players as much as we should. He’s one of our best players at the club by a mile.” Patrick Rose’s four goals in a low scoring game were crucial. Meanwhile, Spotswood tuned up for the finals

By Lance Jenkinson With every failed venture forward on Saturday, Truganina Hornets coach Sergio Lunedei could sense his team’s promotion chances dwindling. The Hornets’ ineptitude in front of goal, leading to a shock 1-0 loss to bottom-half side Laverton in Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 4 west at Arndell Park Reserve, has taken their destiny out of their hands. The consequences of a disastrous night in front of their home fans was felt immediately, with the Hornets joined on 36 points by the third-placed Altona North. The kick in the guts for the Hornets is that North has an extra game to play and accumulate points over the final two rounds, due to the Hornets having the bye in the last round. Lunedei was shattered by the outcome against Laverton. He saw that game as a must-win and believes the Hornets are at long odds to appear in the promotion play-off now. “If we win against Spring Hills and Altona North loses the next two games, which I don’t believe will happen, we might have a chance,” Lunedei said. “I don’t believe in that much of a miracle. If you don’t do it on your own, no one else is going to do it for you. “For me, we’ll be in state league 4 next year.” It was the Hornets’ inability to make the most of their chances that had Lunedei “fuming” on Saturday night. They created a swag of scoring opportunities, only to be denied time and again. Laverton’s performance was not pretty, but it was effective. “We had at least 10 clear chances, but we didn’t even put one away, so you deserve to lose,” Lunedei said. “Laverton didn’t do much – they probably had one chance, but they put it away. “The winners are always right, the losers can only find excuses. “You can be angry, but that’s how it is. We’ve lost our chance.” Truganina has not coped well without forward Gabriele Di Fiore. Di Fiore was on fire with eight goals in five games, and the Hornets were one of the most potent teams in the league, until the front man went down with a season-ending knee injury. “That’s had a massive impact,” Lunedei said. “We’ve had to try and change our way of playing. “With Gabriele, he’s the big man up front, holds the ball up and helps out with the system that we had in place. “Losing him with injury, we had to replace him and modify our game. “We’re creating a lot of chances, but we just don’t put them away.” It was also a dark day for Hoppers Crossing

Leading by just nine points at three-quarter time, the Warriors got it together with a five-goal-to-two final quarter to run out convincing winners.
