Tip plan gets green light By Alesha Capone A decision to approve the Werribee tip expansion has been described as “seriously flawed” by its opponents. The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal last month gave the green light for the council to open four new landfill cells at the Wests Road tip. But the director of the Western Region Environment Centre, Harry van Moorst has slammed the decision as “anti-social” and “anti-sustainable”. “We are very disappointed and angry at this … decision by VCAT, which will almost triple
the size of the landfill,” Mr van Moorst said. “VCAT ignored the auditor’s assessment, supported by community submissions, that the risk of odour and groundwater contamination was high.” Mr van Moorst said the VCAT decision would extend the tip’s lifespan for another 26 years, with the site expected to accept up to one million tonnes of rubbish per year by 2040. WREC took the proposed tip expansion to VCAT after the state Environment Protection Authority (EPA) granted Wyndham council permission to open the four cells at the 236-hectare site in October last year. The approval will allow the council to extend
a section of existing above- and below-ground landfill, to store putrescible waste, solid inert waste and shredded tyres, up to 24 metres above the existing ground level. However, VCAT ordered a new works condition be included: “In order to minimise the potential for odour issues at the adjacent dwellings to the east and the new residential development to the north [of the tip], the area of the tipping face in cells 5a, 5b and 5c shall be no greater than 900 square metres.” Wyndham council’s city operations director Stephen Thorpe said the “tipping face” was the area where waste was deposited and compacted. “We currently use a 600 square metre tipping
face and the legal maximum is 1200 square metres,” he said. “Given that the EPA has allowed us to use a tipping face 300 square metres larger than our current one, we are confident that this will give us adequate space to accept waste in the future.” Mr Thorpe said the council was “very satisfied that VCAT ruled in our favour on this matter”. Mr van Moorst said WREC did not have the funds to take the tip fight to the Supreme Court. However, he said they would continue to raise the matter with the relevant state government ministers and opposition members.

Residents face shock rates rise By Charlene Macaulay More than 5000 Wyndham ratepayers experienced bill shock last week when they received a letter telling them their rates for the current financial year could skyrocket by up to 50 per cent. Wyndham council sent letters to the property owners to advise them that, based on an early review of property valuations, “we anticipate that you may experience an increase of around 20 per cent to 50 per cent in your council rates for the 2018-19 financial year”.
Many residents took to Facebook last week to express their shock at receiving the letters. Writing on the Wyndham Residents United page, Gary wrote: “It’s an absolute disgrace that it’s allowed to increase so much in one year.” In a post on his mayoral Facebook page, Peter Maynard said the letter was sent out to about five per cent of Wyndham property owners “who are likely to see an increase in their rates due to the significant increase in the value of their properties”. “Importantly this doesn’t mean that council is collecting more in rates – it changes who is

paying more and who is paying less,” he said. “Last year, we collected $169.7 million in rates and in this financial year we’ll collect $173.5 million in line with the rate cap of 2.25 per cent.” Cr Maynard said about 35 per cent of ratepayers would pay lower rates.
Wyndham chief financial officer Binda Gokhale said the letter was sent to about 5400 ratepayers – about five per cent of Wyndham property owners – predominantly to households in Werribee and Hoppers Crossing. “The decision to send these letters was based on community feedback that residents would prefer to be given more notice that their rates may be going up, rather than finding out when they receive their rates,” she said. He’s not old enough to have a learner driver permit, but 14-year-old Jake Berias is a champion drag racer. The Werribee resident is a third-generation competitor, with both his grandfather and dad being former drag racers. “Now I’m in the racing seat,” he said. Jake first jumped behind the wheel when he was 11 and found the experience to be a pure adrenaline rush. “As soon as the engine started, you feel the vibration going through your body and as soon as you hit the pedal it throws you back into your seat and it’s like, ‘Hold on, we’re going for a ride’,” he said. Jake started competing soon after through the Victorian Drag Racers Club and now drives a 2016 Motivational Junior Dragster. Hospital project not shortlisted By Charlene Macaulay Werribee Mercy Hospital is not on a Victorian Health and Human Services Building Authority list of possible future projects, despite calls to expand the hospital. Mercy group chief executive Stephen Cornelissen said he was disappointed Werribee Mercy had not made the cut on the list of 48 health and hospital projects being considered for funding. The list was shown as part of a presentation
given at the VHHSBA Industry Forum earlier this year. Adjunct Professor Cornelissen said the state government “must prioritise the ongoing development of Werribee Mercy Hospital�. “We need to ensure the so-called ‘west’ is not seen as a single homogenous region,� he said. “Developing services in one growth corridor will not address the need for services in the other. Our community should not be disadvantaged because of socio-economic or socio-political reasons.
“We congratulate and thank the state government for their funding commitment to Melbourne’s south west in recent years but this investment alone is not going to adequately address future needs.� As reported by Star Weekly last month, about $1 billion is needed to get Werribee Mercy to the size and capacity it needs to cater for Wyndham’s burgeoning population. A Committee for Wyndham analysis found that Wyndham has the lowest number of beds compared to Geelong, Ballarat and
Bendigo, despite having the highest population. Based on council and hospital figures, there are 1569 hospital beds catering for Geelong’s population of 246,036, almost three times the number of beds available in Wyndham (533 beds for 257,028 population). Committee for Wyndham chairman Peter Mayall said Wyndham was not being treated fairly. “Wyndham’s hospital needs have not been met and, it seems, not even planned for,� Mr Mayall said.
Generosity celebrated Some of Wyndham’s most giving souls have been honoured at the 2018 Wyndham Community Volunteer Awards. Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard said the winners had collectively spent 80 years volunteering for the community across sports groups, the environment, tourism and community health and wellbeing. Community Engagement award winner Lyn Scott’s service accounts for more than half of that time, having spent the past 42 years volunteering with kindergartens, Girl Guides and local playgroups, helping vulnerable people in the community and assisting visitors. It all started when Mrs Scott moved to Werribee in the mid-’70s and helped set up a playgroup in Synnot Street, Werribee. “It stems from education and trying to make people’s lives a little bit better so they can grow,� the 76-year-old said. “To see them really down and out and then they start to blossom makes it worthwhile.�
At 14, Young Volunteer of the Year Joanne Williams has already made her mark, having volunteered with the West Victoria Homeless Support Group, Crossroads Uniting Church, Beach Patrol and Love Our Streets, The Hoppers Crossing resident, who is in year 8 at Hoppers Crossing Secondary College, started volunteering when she was 11 and said she was particularly proud of making mats from recycled plastic bags for the homeless. Other award winners included Wal Johnston (Arts, Culture or Tourism), Kym O’Loughlin (Community Health and Wellbeing), Bruce Boddington (Environment or Sustainability), Rhonda Edwards (Sports and Recreation), and Boomerang Bags (Community Group). The winners will be acknowledged at a gala awards evening later this month and the 2018 Citizen of the Year will be selected from the pool of individual category winners. Charlene Macaulay

Indian culture cash challenged By Charlene Macaulay Wyndham’s Indian community is rallying against the state government’s changes to Indian cultural precinct funding. The state government last month called on Wyndham’s Indian and South Asian community groups to apply for a share of $1 million to build facilities, or improve or restore existing ones, as part of a new Multicultural Community Infrastructure Fund. But a number of Wyndham residents are dubious about the government’s motives and
have questioned why it committed $50,000 for Wyndham council to conduct a feasibility study into an Indian precinct and $500,000 for its construction back in 2015, only to scrap that process in favour of the new fund. Point Cook resident Sudhir Juneja, who advocated for the precinct in 2015, has branded the move a political stunt and called on the Indian community to reject the offer. “We see it as a tool to buy the Indian community votes without any proof of delivery of past promise,” Mr Juneja wrote on his Facebook page. “Thanks, but no thanks.”
Wyndham councillor Intaj Khan questioned why the funding was not included in the state’s 2018-19 budget, calling on Multicultural Affairs Minister Robin Scott to come to Wyndham and speak with members of the Indian community. “I don’t believe there’s a million dollars there,” he said. “It’s an empty promise.” Cr Khan said the Indian community was discussing the possibility of fundraising to create its own cultural precinct. Wyndham’s Rishi Prabhakar said that based on the government’s history with the project,
the community had no confidence in the latest announcement. Mr Scott did not answer Star Weekly’s question about how many grant applications had been received to date, but did say the fund would support the preservation and sharing of Indian culture in Wyndham. “The Indian community in Wyndham is growing fast – that’s why we’re providing funding for infrastructure that will enhance or establish community spaces that celebrate Indian culture for the local community to enjoy,” he said.
Jenny set to saddle up Jenny Hogan is gearing up to take part in the Great Victorian Bike Ride – 25 years after first riding in the event. The Hoppers Crossing woman, 66, is something of veteran when it comes to the annual cycling trek hosted by the Bicycle Network. “I’ve been on the Great Victorian Bike Ride four or five times, with my first ride back in 1991,” Ms Hogan said. “I have always come on the ride by myself and met people. This year I’m hoping to encourage a few friends to join me.” To be held from Saturday, November 24 to Sunday, December 2, this year’s ride weaves through the Victorian High Country and Murray River regions. More than 3200 people are expected to participate in the event, which is now in its 35th year. “I usually avoid riding on the roads, but it is
much safer with a large group on an organised ride,” Ms Hogan said. “My advice for someone thinking about coming on the Great Victorian Bike Ride is to do lots of practice rides,” she said. The cycling enthusiast said she usually rode the Federation Trail two to three times a week. The Great Victorian Bike Ride includes three, five or nine-day rides. Costs vary from $1029 for adults for the nine-day ride, to $729 for the five-day ride and $529 for the three-day ride. Prices will rise after August 10. Details: www.greatvic.com.au Alesha Capone

A 16-year-old Wyndham Vale boy was among four teenagers arrested by police last week as part of an investigation into an armed robbery at a Lara service station on July 24. A 16-year-old Brookfield boy, a 17-year-old Mill Park boy and a 17-year-old Epping boy were also arrested. The youths are facing charges including armed robbery and aggravated burglary. After facing court last week, three of the teenagers were remanded in custody and one was placed on bail to re-appear in court later this month.

ne year ago I wrote of a letter I received advising me that I was getting the NBN service, like it or lump it, and to choose a provider and move forward. I can report it has been far from smooth sailing. My most recent experience was the worst. Arriving home to see a big white van parked on your nature strip is never cause for celebration, unless it is playing Greensleeves and has a big cone on the roof. Suffice to say there was no music and no cone on the roof, but a ladder instead. My internet service was not working, as the worker was checking a few things, or so he told me when I inquired as to what was going on. Apparently I should have received a notice in the mail alerting me to this interruption to my NBN service. I hadn’t. He told me it would be back on in a few minutes. It wasn’t on half an hour later, and when I went to seek him out, he had gone. A call to my provider shed no light on the situation, as they had no record of any worker being assigned to my area. After trying rebooting, they said they could send someone out to have a look. Great, but
not until some time the next day. Given that everything was working normally until the worker came along, and I run my business from home, this was not acceptable. I explained this to my provider who was very, very sorry but could not do anything, except send someone out some time the next day. Time to go higher up the food chain, I thought. No can do, says my provider. Surely you could get the worker who caused this to turn around, come back and fix the problem? No can do, says my provider. We don’t know who he is. Interesting. I thought maybe try to go up the food chain again. No can do, says my provider again. Time to address the elephant in the room. I ask: Where are you based? No can tell, says my provider. After some further interrogation it is revealed that Raj is in Mumbai. Please connect me with someone in Melbourne, I demand. No can do, says my Mumbai provider. Time to change providers. But whether that is better remains to be seen. Have you had any similar experiences? ■
Police operation
More than 3000 vehicles were checked when police used Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology during a road operation in Wyndham last Wednesday. One car was impounded, 14 infringement notices were issued and nine people summonsed. Police detected motorists driving unregistered, driving while suspended or disqualified and one case of an unrestrained child.
Man charged
A 39-year-old man has been charged with two counts of intentionally causing injury and three counts of recklessly causing injury, after an incident at a Wyndham Vale home on July 31. with a Family Violence Safety Notice.

Hopkins Road upgrade push By Sumeyya Ilanbey and Alesha Capone Melton and Wyndham councils will lobby the state government to upgrade notorious Hopkins Road. Two children died last month following a head-on collision between two cars on the road. The road’s latest fatality has prompted Melton council to urge VicRoads to commit to “significant” road upgrades on the deadly
eight-kilometre stretch. The council wants the road to be widened, intersections upgraded, lighting improved and fixed speed cameras installed. Wyndham city economy, innovation and liveability acting director Melissa Falkenberg said the council “would support Melton council’s calls for upgrades to Hopkins Road”. She said that the site where Derrimut Road became Hopkins Road was “at capacity” and carried 18,000 vehicles per day. Western metropolitan MP Bernie Finn has
also called for Hopkins Road to be upgraded. In Parliament last month, Mr Finn said the road had gone from “a country lane” to “a major thoroughfare”. “Unfortunately, the infrastructure upgrade has not occurred to provide for the added traffic,” Mr Finn said. “In fact, I remember when I was first running for pre-selection for the Western Metropolitan Region I was taken to Hopkins Road by a local constituent … and I saw that road first-hand.
“It was appalling then, and here we are 12 years later and it is still appalling.” VicRoads acting north-west transport and planning director Simon Basic said there were no plans to duplicate Derrimut and Hopkins roads between Dohertys Road and the Western Highway. “We’ve undertaken a number of safety improvements on Hopkins Road in recent years and continue to work closely with both Wyndham and Melton councils to determine the need for further upgrades,” he said.
Tapping into good will A long, hot shower is a luxury most of us take for granted. The Salvation Army’s Wyndham City branch is calling on locals to give generously so those less fortunate also have a chance to wash off their day. The Salvos have had a mobile shower on loan from One Voice Australia for the past four years, and now the unit is for sale for $40,000. The unit has two en suite shower rooms and a room for clothing, towels and toiletries to be stored. Captain Kim Haworth said the unit provides on average between 20-35 hot showers a week to rough sleepers. “We see the difference that having a hot shower, clean clothes, something to eat and a warm place to be provides for people who are doing it really tough in our community,” she said. “This is a vital service to Wyndham – and the need in the community is dramatically increasing.”
She’s rallying the community to help the Salvos buy the shower. She said there was also scope to install a washing machine and dryer in the unit. The Wyndham City branch helps locals experiencing homelessness by providing showers, hot meals, clothes washing and drying facilities, material aid emergency relief, access to social groups and programs and a safe place to be during the day. Ms Haworth said the Salvos had helped 1378 Wyndham families in need in the 2017-18 year, giving out more than $381,000 in emergency relief. Mr Allan said he visited the We W rribee Centrelink office to applyy for the pension on March 14 this year – the day after retiring from f 29 years off working ffor Hobsons Bay council. The 65-year-old said he had asked the Centrelink office if he could applyy for the pension in January, y but was told he needed to wait until after he retired. application paperwork, he is yet to see a single payment. “It’s four months now – it’s ridiculous, I still haven’t got it [the pension] and it’s now August,” he said. Mr Allan is not the only ly one in his fami f ly to have had trouble with Centrelinkk – his wife f , Karen, spent more than 200 day a s waiting for f her application to receive a disability pension to be processed. Mr Allan said Karen only began to receive her pa payments last month, after he asked the office ce of Lalor MP Joanne R Ryan to look into it.

Werribee resident Bill Hillis sa says he’s been battlingg Centrelink for f four f years to get a disabilityy allowance. The 53-year-old, who suffers from epilepsy, y has been unable to workk since he was diagnosed. His driver’s licence was cancelled and because of his medication, he is not permitted to operate heavy machinery or use power tools. Mr Hillis sa says lookingg at a computer screen can cause him to hav a e a seizure. He has letters from f his GP and an epilepsy clinic, stating he cannot work. Yet he’s currently ly on the Newstart Allowance, which is ffor people seeking work. Mr Hillis says Centrelink has repeatedly denied his requests to be transferre f d to a disabilityy allowance. He said last time he applied for the allowance, he was told he would be “put in the system” and to waitt for an answer. “But I’ve been in this battle for four years,”

Environmental Investigation Commencement RAAF Williams (Laverton) PFAS Investigation and Management Program The Department of Defence has been proactive in initiating an environmental program to investigate and manage per- and poly- fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) on and in the vicinity of Defence sites as a result of the historical use of legacy firefighting foam. After a comprehensive review, it has been determined that an environmental investigation is required at RAAF Williams (Laverton) and in the surrounding area. Defence is holding a Community Information Session prior to the start of the investigation to provide the local community information about the investigation processes and expected timeframes. On the road to recovery Wyndham man John Carnevali has been released from hospital and is at home eight weeks after suffering a heart attack, cardiac arrest and stroke. The 45-year-old was left with a hypoxic brain injury and cognitive deficits after the June 3 health shock, with his brain deprived of oxygen for about 20 minutes during the ordeal. However, his rehabilitation has defied the odds, and John was able to leave Sunshine Hospital and go home last Wednesday. His wife Melissa said the family was now trying to adjust to a new kind of normal, with John requiring 24-hour supervision. She said while his physical progress had been phenomenal, his brain injury has left him with severe short-term memory deficits.
Despite this, Melissa is determined to be positive. “The fact that he has survived this is truly amazing.” Meanwhile, Melissa said she had been “totally overwhelmed” by the love and support she has received from family, friends and the wider Wyndham community. A GoFundMe page has raised more than $32,000, and a fundraising event at the Italian Sports Club raised more than $30,000. Darley history finds a home The historical Darley Refractories site has been given a major facelift and transformed into a “luxurious” aged-care home. The brickworks’ chimney, built in the 1880s by G.M Seward & Sons of Melbourne, has been restored and repaired and will be a major feature of the Royal Freemason’s Bacchus Marsh home. Bacchus Marsh facility manager Kate Hayward said she was excited about the restoration and retention of the chimney and the homage it pays to the site’s historical significance.

Royal Freemasons trustee John Chanter described the home as offering “state-of-theart” amenities, including adjustable beds and mobility devices. There will be an on-call nurse available, as well as an on-site medical clinic where residents’ personal doctors can visit. “Our latest facility will provide private rooms with en suites for 144 residents, catering for both couples and single people, and has a dedicated memory support unit to help meet the specialised needs of residents with dementia,” Mr Chanter said. “No comfort, technology or mobility feature has been left out.”

Mr Chanter said the facility was configured to help draw residents to a central dining area, akin to a family home, where they can choose to eat on their own or in the company of others.
“There are spacious lounges in each wing, and tea and coffee making areas for residents and their families,” he said. “A central cafe is also available for residents and their families.”
Up to 200 ongoing jobs are expected to be created. The facility, at 58 Grey Street, Darley, will be open to the public on Sunday, August 12, between 11am and 1pm.

Push to pool school resources By Charlene Macaulay A new pool could be on the cards for Point Cook. Wyndham council has agreed to talk with the Victorian Schools Building Authority and Department of Education and Training about providing indoor sports and aquatic facilities at the planned Saltwater secondary school that can also be used by the community. The project could be either fully funded by the state, or include a partnership with a private provider.
This is in response to a council budget submission from Point Cook Action Group member Christine Macpherson, who called on the council to build a pool and indoor recreation facilities in Point Cook. “Current [council] facilities at AquaPulse are oversubscribed and, along with Eagle Stadium, are not practically accessible from our area by public transport,” her submission read. “The council should urgently address the needs of our significant Point Cook population by building a local swimming pool/indoor recreation complex.”
Western Leisure Services chief executive Bruce Mackay said AquaPulse had about 910,000 visitors over the 2017-18 financial year. About 3350 children are enrolled in swimming lessons at the facility. The council is currently compiling information about how Point Cook residents use AquaPulse as part of its Wyndham Aquatic Strategy. When asked what conversations the council has had with the VSBA and DET about a shared indoor sports and aquatic facility at the planned Saltwater secondary school, acting city
life director Georgie Hill said the council was in “constant contact with the Victorian School Building Authority to determine opportunities to establish shared community sports facilities throughout Wyndham”. Meanwhile, a planned indoor recreation facility just off Hacketts Road, on the western boundary of the East Werribee Employment Precinct, could also serve the Point Cook community. The development depends on the land being released to Wyndham council, and to date no funding has been allocated to this project.
Have mercy for hospital The first-ever Mercy Cup football match and ladies lunch has raised $4700 to go towards the purchase of life-saving equipment for Werribee Mercy Hospital. Werribee Districts Football Club and Wyndhamvale FC battled it out on the field for the inaugural Mercy Cup at the weekend. Werribee Districts claimed the trophy with a 16.10 (106)-8.11 (59) win. But the big winner on the day was the Werribee Hospital Foundation. Money raised from the match will help the Werribee Hospital Foundation buy an advanced hemostasis analyser, a machine which analyses the coagulation of blood. Werribee Mercy Hospital perioperative services nurse unit manager Carmela Joyce said the analysing unit would help clinicians manage “life-threatening bleeding” and “minimise risk and expedite patient care”. “The analysing unit will cost $40,000 and
we are so pleased the Werribee Hospital Foundation, along with the support of the local community, is making the purchase possible,” Ms Joyce said. Werribee Mercy perioperative educator Nicole Whiting, who organised the sold-out ladies lunch, said they hoped the money raised from the Mercy Cup would be boosted to $5000 when added to an online campaign being run by Mercy Cup ambassador, Werribee Districts player Gavin Donnon Club president Murray Smith wants the community to get behind the campaign. “As a club, with over 350 local families, it is important that we get behind the hospital,” Mr Smith said. By Goya Dmytryshchak A Wyndham Vale woman has been sentenced to nine years’ jail for the manslaughter of a man at a Williamstown boarding house. Daniel “Danny” O’Brien, 37, was stabbed in the chest with a large kitchen knife on December 9, 2016, at the Old Royal Hotel on Nelson Place. Immediately after stabbing him, Kerry Jones, now 40, picked up their baby and walked across the road to hand herself in at Williamstown police station. In her sentencing remarks, Supreme Court Judge Lesley Taylor last week said Jones and Mr O’Brien had been in a relationship since 2013. “It was a volatile relationship, marred by illicit drug use and domestic violence,” Justice Taylor said. “You were both users of ‘ice’ and seemingly chronically short of money. “Those close to each of you observed you both engage in aggressive behaviour. There were instances of physical violence.” The court heard that in April, 2015, Jones attended Werribee police station to report that Mr O’Brien had grabbed her around the throat, as well as earlier incidents in which he had threatened to harm and kill her. Mr O’Brien was charged with assault, to which he pleaded guilty. The police obtained an intervention order on Jones’ behalf and, with the support of Anglicare and Yarra Housing, she found independent accommodation. In October, 2015, Jones again attended
Werribee police station to report that she had armed herself with a knife after being punched twice in the head by Mr O’Brien, with whom she had become pregnant. However, she later signed a statement of no complaint. The same month, police charged Mr O’Brien with breaching an intervention order. The child was born in May, 2016. The night before Mr O’Brien’s death, Jones organised for another man to drive her and her baby to Williamstown. “You were seemingly anxious to contact Mr O’Brien, sending 13 text messages and making 54 unanswered calls to him in the space of about two hours,” Justice Taylor said. “You arrived at the boarding house at approximately 8.35pm and gained access to Mr O’Brien’s room by climbing through the window and unlocking the door. Mr O’Brien returned about 15 minutes later. “Shortly after midnight, another resident of the boarding house heard a woman’s voice from Mr O’Brien’s room repeatedly shouting, ‘Where is my drugs’.” The next morning, a different resident and an outside construction worker heard sounds of arguing. Mr O’Brien had been preparing a syringe of methylamphetamine for his use or having just used that syringe when he was fatally stabbed. The court heard Jones had a prior conviction for stabbing in 2009 the father of her eldest child, which he survived. Jones must serve a minimum of seven years before being eligible for parole.

Case for court order A Wyndham councillor has called on the state government and opposition to commit to fund a new multi-jurisdictional court in Werribee as part of their election promises. Safer communities portfolio holder Kim McAliney said she was “extremely disappointed” the court, which would make up part of the proposed Wyndham Justice Precinct slated for East Werribee, did not receive funding in the 2018-19 budget. Cr McAliney said Werribee Magistrates Court did not have a safe area for female victims of family violence, meaning victims sit metres away from perpetrators in court. Furthermore, a number of civil and criminal matters are diverted to Sunshine
Magistrates Court because Werribee is not big enough to deal with the local case load. “Our magistrates court is dangerously small and antiquated,” she said. Cr McAliney said a wider justice precinct, which would co-locate the court, a police complex, and community and justice-related services, was “urgently required”. “We need to support our police by ensuring that they are not subject to a revolving door system of re-arresting.” Neither the state government or the opposition responded to Star Weekly’s questions by deadline. In a class of their own By Charlene Macaulay When Maureen Price started her teaching career 50 years ago, she had 68 grade 3 pupils for the first six months. The school was Yarraville Primary, and the other grade 3 teacher wasn’t starting until term three, leaving Ms Price to get inventive. “I didn’t even have enough desks for all of the kids,” she says. Ms Price remembers taking all 68 pupils on monthly trips down to where the West Gate Bridge was under construction so they could talk to the men building the bridge. And she remembers the sad day the bridge came down.

She has had 17 other roles in her five-decade career, including consultant, curriculum writer and manager of a school support centre. She has been the principal at Mossfiel Primary School in Hoppers Crossing for the past 20 years. “The kids ground you, and I also think that you get the immediate feedback that you’re actually making a difference to the kids,” she said Her colleague, teacher Sue Said has notched up 45 years in the industry, including four decades at Mossfiel. The Truganina resident said she had originally wanted to be an accountant, but changed to teaching when she was told employers were reluctant to hire female accountants. She has never regretted the switch.

Ms Said spent five years at Coburg North before moving to Mossfiel, where she works three days a week as an intervention teacher. “Here I’ve experienced lots of different things,” she said. “I’ve taught art, PE, preps, I’ve team-taught with different teachers, I’ve had a great, wide
experience within the school. I’ve never felt the need to move on.” She considered retiring at the end of this year, but realised she wasn’t ready. “I still wake up and I don’t think, ‘Ugh, I have to go to work’,” she said. “I think that would be the telling day.”

Labor in Mercy MRI promise The Labor Party has committed to getting a Medicare-subsidised MRI for Werribee Mercy Hospital if it wins the next federal election. The promise is part of a Labor commitment to deliver 20 MRI licences across Australia, including at least 10 for public hospitals, if it wins the next election. A Senate inquiry found earlier this year that Melbourne’s western suburbs had a shortfall in access to subsidised MRI machines. The promise comes one month after Lalor MP Joanne Ryan launched an online petition calling for the hospital to receive a full-rebate MRI licence. “To have one locally here will be an absolute win for this community,” Ms Ryan said. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) produces high-resolution images of the human body and helps identify medical issues that cannot be picked up on X-rays or ultrasounds. Currently, Wyndham residents can access an MRI at MIA Wyndham Radiology, which is based at the Wyndham Private Medical Centre in Hoppers Lane, but may incur considerable costs in doing so. MY WYNDHAM Gordon McColl started archery five years ago and is already a national champion. The 75-year-old retiree spends his days training at Arrows Plus Point Cook and occasionally sitting down for a cup of coffee. He chats with Charlene Macaulay. What is your connection to the Wyndham area? I live in Seabrook, but I spend most of my time in Wyndham because of Lawrie Emmins Reserve (as a member of Werribee Archery) and Arrows Plus Point Cook (indoor archery centre). I have seen this place develop from somewhere that was all open paddocks to what it is now. Tell me about your family. My wife and I had three boys … five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. We have a Friday night dinner with those of our family who are around, and that’s been going on for years. We have about 10-12 people come for dinner, and now my grandkids bring their partners, and they’ve got kids.

Irene Norman, who runs Arrows Plus, had a social two-for-one come and try and my friend John and I decided to come and I became a bit obsessed with it, I suppose. Now I do it four or five times a week. They run the national and state championship conjointly, and this year in the open age I finished third in Victoria and fourth in Australia, and in the 70-plus [category] I finished first nationally and in Victoria.

Council recently placed two draft policies ‘on the table’ for feedback with both likely to impact on how residents live and play in Wyndham. Our Neighbourhood Character Strategy 2018 will be forwarded to the Minister for Planning to place on public exhibition inviting further community feedback before Council makes any final decisions about the Strategy. The Strategy identifies the areas where different rates of change (substantial, incremental and limited) should be encouraged and the different neighbourhood character types throughout Wyndham. We’ve also modified some areas to concentrate Substantial Change areas only to a few areas based on their capacity to accommodate higher densities. In most instances their current zoning facilitates this growth capacity. If you’d like to see more detail you can download our meeting agenda papers on our website. Council is also releasing an Issues and Opportunities Paper for a Coastal Management Plan. We are seeking feedback via our online engagement tool - The Loop - for a month on the future planning and development of our coastal areas. Smaller breeds and elderly pets are most commonly affected. At the early signs of dental disease your vet will recommend that your pets teeth are scaled clean and polished under a general anaesthetic. This can be done effectively and safely in even the most elderly patients giving them a much better quality of life. In advanced dental disease loose teeth may need to be extracted and antibiotics may be prescribed to treat infection. All pets will benefit from preventative dental care. Daily brushing with special pet toothpaste is considered the gold standard, however for those with less time your vet can recommend a dry dental food as well as other chew products to help fight tartar. Most vet clinics will have great dental promotions during Dental Month. It will be so much nicer getting up close with your pet when their smelly breath is improved!

The Tarneit college’s production of Lost in the Music will be performed across three concerts this week. Apart from students who are singing and playing musical instruments during the show, several textiles students have helped to make the colourful costumes. The head of the college’s senior school and production co-director, Christine Taylor, said Lost in the Music featured songs from musicals both old and new, including Oliver!, West Side

Parents of children travelling to school at Geelong by train have called for increased supervision by the railways on the four trains carrying the children. The call follows the severe injuries to young Steve Stoios of Werribee who fell from the train while it was approaching Werribee last week.

Audiologist Marina Opacak, from Active Audiology in Altona, says a hearing aid can mean the brain spends less energy on having to struggle with hearing conversation, thus boosting social interaction. She says hearing aids can lessen the burden on the brain, helping stave off cognitive decline and leaving aid users less tired. Recent studies suggest that the greater the untreated hearing loss, the greater the risk of dementia. “If you have two people with a hearing loss, both will experience a degree of mental decline with the ageing process,” Marina says. “However, the person who hears better (because they’re wearing hearing aids) experiences a lower level of brain deterioration.” Despite study findings on the benefits of hearing aids, many people still delay a decision on getting one fitted. Cost and aesthetics are

The seizure of a large quantity of heroin in Wyndham last week is expected to severely curtail drug trafficking in the western suburbs. The heroin-related arrests and charges come three days after a 38-year-old Werribee man was charged with trafficking cocaine in an unrelated drug squad investigation.
More than 400 Don KRC employees face unemployment after the company last week announced the closure of its Altona production plant. About 220 workers in Western Australia will also lose their jobs when Don’s Spearwood plant closes in April next year as part of the company’s restructuring plans.

SPORT Warriors keep the heat on Hoppers Crossing made it nine games in a row without defeat in Western Region Football League division 1 thanks to a 73-point mauling of the Sunshine Kangaroos at Hogans Road Reserve on Saturday. The Warriors remain in hot pursuit of a top-three finish and a finals double chance. The fourth-placed Warriors are two points behind a trio of teams – ladder leader Deer Park, Spotswood and Werribee Districts. Hoppers Crossing came out breathing fire against Sunshine. The Warriors kicked nine of the opening 10 goals of the match to take an unassailable 55-point lead into half- time. They cruised to victory in the second half, despite Sunshine putting up a bit more resistance. Braden Ferrari had a day out for Hoppers Crossing, kicking five goals. Others to impress for the Warriors were Chris Endres, Ashlin Brown and Aaron Williams, who kicked four goals.
Werribee Districts defeated Wyndhamvale by 47 points. Trent Lee kicked five goals in the Tigers’ win. In division 2, Point Cook played its first match under lights at Saltwater Reserve on Saturday night and was victorious by 21 points over Manor Lakes. In division 3, Tarneit won a thrilling top-of-the-table clash with Wyndham Suns by four points. In VAFA division 3, Westbourne Grammarians trounced Manningham Cobras by 94 points. In the GDFL, Werribee Centrals cruised to a 47-point win over Anakie. Point Cook will face Braybrook in the inaugural WRFL netball grand final at the VU Community Sports Stadium on Friday night. Reds ascend to next level Hoppers Crossing has secured promotion from the Football Federation Victoria women’s state league 2 north-west in style. The Reds confirmed a top two finish with a typically entertaining 5-1 win over Fitzroy City at Grange Reserve on Sunday. It was fitting that Reds striker Julia Budiongo-Batota fired in a hat-trick on this day. Shantay Mena and Mya Moran also found the back of the net for the Reds. The win means that Hoppers Crossing will feature in women’s state league 1 next season. Lance Jenkinson
IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ Last week I wrote that the AFL was belittling the VFL competition by trialling its experimental rules during VFL home and away games and I stand by that. Werribee and Coburg footy clubs were approached and both agreed to be the guinea pigs in a proper game, which is their call. Both teams sit towards the bottom of the VFL ladder, both are stand-alone VFL teams and both made the most of this opportunity to promote their clubs. The live television exposure was a bonus for the clubs and sponsors and the fact the eyes of the AFL footy world were on the game does not hinder the future prospects of potential draftees such as Sam Collins, Jack Henderson, Keegan Gray or Nick Coughlan. From a spectator point of view, the new rule seemed to have minimal impact on the game but I have no doubt once coaches see it in action, it will open up several new strategies. Whether it is radical enough to make watching two bad teams better, I strongly doubt. ■ Newport Power Football Club’s annual sports lunch last Friday was another good event with a very entertaining panel of Jess Duffin, Daniel Wells, Doug Hawkins and Adam Cooney. The 2008 Brownlow Medallist certainly did not hold back on his much talked about departure from Whitten Oval. Suffice to say, he is no fan of Brendan McCarthy or Peter Gordon and the way they handled his exit from the red, white and blue. Jess Duffin is a dual sportsperson playing at the top level in both cricket and football, which is a luxury that probably won’t last much longer, even though AFLW is shrinking, or that appears to be the plan.
Bears back to their best By Lance Jenkinson Respect for the jersey, local bragging rights and the easiest possible path to the grand final – it was all on the line for Werribee Bears in NRL Victoria first grade. The Bears ticked all the boxes in a 52-14 win over Truganina Rabbitohs on the road at Clearwood Drive Reserve on Saturday. Above all, Bears coach Josh Makiri wanted to see his team show some pride after having their colours lowered in a baffling 50-4 loss to Casey Warriors seven days earlier. “We got thrashed last week,” Makiri said. “For us this week, we just wanted to put some pride back into the jersey. “That was really our objective.” The sweetener was beating Truganina on the 52 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 8, 2018

The Bears, champions of first grade in the past two seasons, are undoubtedly the top side in Wyndham, but the Rabbitohs are keen to bridge the gap. “It’s still early in the rivalry,” Makiri said. “It’s turned into a little bit of a rivalry because they’re our neighbours. “A lot of players left our club to go there and help start up that club. “We still have a good relationship, but everyone loves to get a win over them.” The icing on the cake for Werribee was that the derby victory secured the first-grade
minor premiership and top ranking for the finals. That means that if the Bears do lose their semi-final, they will get a second chance. But they are hellbent on using the win over the Rabbitohs as a springboard for a winning run to end the season. The Bears will do battle with Waverley-Oakleigh Panthers in the final home-and-away round of the season this Saturday at Haines Drive Reserve. It will be part of the club’s 10th anniversary celebrations. “It’s a big weekend for us as a club and our team going forward,” Makiri said. “There will be a lot of people down there, so we want to put a stamp on that game and get a win before the finals.”

■ I have expressed my thoughts on the over-zealous growth of women’s football before, but to now shrink the elite competition’s time frame – while expanding the participants – makes no sense. I agree with Daisy Pearce and others that it makes the competition farcical. As for comparing it to the World Cup, that was one of the most foolish statements I have ever heard. It is too late to go back to square one, but it is not too late to be realistic about the talent pool and the logistics involved to rein in the expansion. The women’s game has a bright and lucrative future. Let it evolve naturally. Talk to the people playing the game. They know better than any corporate executive where the game is going, and what the main issues are.

Giants veteran pumped about leading a flag charge

A familiar face will be at the helm of the Werribee Giants in the Baseball Victoria summer league division 2 next season. The Giants have appointed home-grown John Curnow to help guide them back to the finals and beyond. At 36 and with 24 years of service to the game, Curnow felt the next evolution in his baseball career was to become the club’s coach. “At some stage you’ve got to put your hand up,” Curnow said. “It certainly is an honour. “I got to play all my junior baseball there and now I get a chance to step into the shoes of a few of the blokes I’ve looked up to who guided me through my junior career.” Curnow has spent 21 of his years in baseball at Werribee. He left only for a brief three-year stint with the Newport Rams to play division 1 baseball. But his heart is undoubtedly with the Giants.
“I’m basically at the club for life,” the Werribee resident said. “You grow up there and as a junior you get to know all the older folks down there. “Now they come down and have a drink at the bar and sort of tell you how good or bad you’re doing when they’re on the sidelines. “It’s sort of like a family rolling over and over.” Curnow has been entrusted with the task of getting Werribee over the finals hurdle. The Giants have so often been in the thick of the action at the pointy end of the season only for their form to go pear-shaped at finals time. Last season, the Giants just missed out on the finals, so they were at least spared the heartache of a finals exit. Curnow will take a win-now approach to his coaching in the 2018-19 season. If he can earn promotion with this playing group, it would make him immensely proud.
“I’ve got to see a lot of the these guys come through juniors up into the seniors as I was in the peak of my career,” Curnow said. “Now they’re at the stage where I was and they look up to me, so I get the chance to guide them through their careers and it’s something really exciting to do. We’ve been up for a while in finals, though we missed out last year. “With the new group of juniors coming through, it’s an exciting chance to get back up there this year and compete for a flag.” Curnow is in talks with overseas imports. He is targeting a two-way player who can churn out plenty of innings on the mound and produce with the bat. Curnow offered a little bit of intrigue regarding acquisitions, saying he is on the verge of revealing a “little surprise” at shortstop this season. Lance Jenkinson
Jet’s dream gets real By Lance Jenkinson Western Jets midfielder Daly Andrews has the AFL recruiters yearning for more. Andrews has impressed as a wingman for the Jets in the TAC Cup and turned heads in his brief appearance for Vic Metro in the under-18 national championships, but the recruiters want to see even more of what he could potentially deliver if selected in the AFL draft later this year. Andrews will provide a more complete picture of his athletic abilities at the AFL Draft Combine. The 18-year-old is one of four Jets invited to the combine, along with captain Xavier O’Halloran, Buku Khamis and Zak Butters. To be selected for the combine, five clubs have to nominate the player. Andrews was humbled by the call-up. “I was pretty shocked at first, but really happy getting the invite,” he said. “To play AFL would be a dream and to get that little bit closer was great.” Andrews, who lives in Werribee and has loved football since his Auskick days at Werribee Centrals, also has a background in athletics through the Werribee Little Athletics Centre, where he was a junior hurdles champion. “Athletics has always been in the background,” he said. “The combine will be a chance to showcase my athletic ability. “A strength of mine is that I can play numerous positions. “The combine will help showcase that I can play back, forward and through the middle, with all the athletic tests they have there. “Hopefully, I can get really good numbers across all tests and come out happy with my performance.” Andrews has been a bolter from the pack in 2018. He was no sure selection for the Jets, though a growth spurt helped his cause. The Vic Metro selection came on the back of a stellar first half of the season. “This year, I grew over the pre-season and I was lucky enough to get picked for Jets,” he said. “I had a good first few games for the Jets and got selected for Vic Metro and now the combine. To get selected in that was good for me and good for my confidence as well.” Andrews continued his stellar season on Sunday, playing a significant role in the Jets’ 56-point win over Greater Western Victorian Rebels at the Williamstown Football Ground despite time off the ground with a hamstring niggle. While it has been a break-out year for Andrews, it has not all gone to plan. He was limited to just one game for Vic Metro at the national championships after suffering delayed concussion following the win over the Allies. enough to see him miss the remainder of the championships. “I felt fine after getting falconed, played the whole game out and sang the song after the game, then I remember biting into a muffin after the game and feeling a bit dizzy,” he said. “It sort of progressed from there. I felt sick and went to hospital and was throwing up. I do remember the whole game.”
Andrews, a VCE student at MacKillop College, was thrilled to get the opportunity to represent Vic Metro. The Werribee Districts junior said it was a goal of his at the start of the year to pull on the Big V. “That meant the world to me,” he said. “To be in that elite environment really helped develop my footy and me as a person.”
Werribee Devils fell victim to one of the toughest road trips in the Big V Basketball women’s division 1. The Devils season came to an end on Saturday night with a 59-48 elimination final loss to the Warrnambool Mermaids at The Arc Sports Stadium. A three-hour road trip and a partisan home crowd made life difficult for the Devils. Once the Mermaids got on top in the second and third quarters, the momentum could not be arrested. Werribee was solid out of the gates, leading by three at quarter-time. But they could not maintain the rage and were out-scored 39-20 over the next two periods and their game and season slipped away. Import Alyssa Bennett played to her usual standard for Werribee. The American had a double-double 17 points and 12 rebounds to go with three steals and two blocks. Bennett averaged 17.1 points and 11.6 rebounds per game in a stellar season that will have her in the MVP conversation. They needed a variety of offensive threats to beat Warrnambool, but they could not find another one outside of Bennett. Bennett shot 8-from-18 (44 per cent) the rest of the team shot a combined 12-from-46 (26 per cent). Georgia Tauschke had a well rounded game for the Devils with nine points and eight rebounds, while Daniella Pisano contributed eight points. Sam Moodie and Jessica Slade worked hard to reel in nine rebounds apiece, but offered little by way of offence. The Devils went into the playoffs optimistic after winning their final three games of the regular season.
