Sex crimes escalate By Charlene Macaulay Overall crime is down, but sexual offences across Wyndham have skyrocketed, new crime figures reveal. The latest data from the Crime Statistics Agency reveal total crime across Wyndham had dropped 4.8 per cent in the 12 months to March 31, despite a 38.3 per cent spike in sexual offences over the period, with 365 sex crimes recorded, up from 264. Sexual offences include rape, indecent assault, incest, sexual offences against children and other sexual offences. The category has been steadily on the increase in recent years, with 200 sex crimes recorded over a 12-month period to March 31, 2012.

Family violence, firearms and weapons offences, deception offences, drug offences and retail theft also recorded increases in the latest figures, while there were significant decreases in the number of aggravated and non-aggravated burglaries, car thefts and thefts from motor vehicles, and breaching bail conditions. Wyndham Police Acting Inspector Jason Templar said sexual assault victims could now report sex crimes and receive support at the newly-opened multi-disciplinary centre in Werribee. The new centre pairs police and support services under one roof for victims of sexual offences, family violence and child abuse. “It is vital we continue to receive these reports so police can support victims and hold offenders to account for these terrible crimes,” he said. Acting Inspector Templar said targeted operations to address high-volume crime had significantly reduced burglaries and theft across the city. “Our crime investigation and divisional response units have also been working hard to curb serious crime by proactively targeting those possessing illegal firearms. This has resulted in a number of arrests and a 13.1 per cent increase in weapons offences,” he said. “We look forward to welcoming an additional 12 general duties police officers to the Wyndham police service area over the next 10 months.”
The future is looking bright for Hoppers Crossing teenager Bella Paige who placed second in the grand final of Channel Nine’s The Voice at the weekend. On Sunday night, 16-year-old Bella and three other grand finalists took part in the competition’s last round. Bella sang The Greatest Love of All by Whitney Houston for the grand final, in which more than a million public votes were cast. Perth vocal artist Sam Perry won the competition and Bella was named runner-up. In 2014, Bella was also one of two runners-up in The Voice Kids Australia. The following year, she competed in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest. After Sunday night’s grand final, Bella took to social media to congratulate Perry and her Voice mentor, Kelly Rowland. “Thank you for everything you have done for me! It has been a dream come true working with you,” Bella wrote on Facebook. She also posted that she was “so excited for what’s ahead”. “This is just the beginning for me,” she wrote. Alesha Capone

Khan pleads guilty to charges By Charlene Macaulay Wyndham councillor Intaj Khan has pleaded guilty to eight charges relating to the filing of register of interest returns, but will have to wait until July before a sentence is handed down. Fronting the Sunshine Magistrates Court on Monday, Cr Khan faced three counts of failing to disclose companies in which he held office during the return period; three counts of failing to disclose companies in which he held a financial interest; and two counts of failing to submit ordinary returns between February 2016 and February 2017.
If found guilty, Cr Khan faces fines of more than $75,000. Defence lawyer Sarah Keating argued that Cr Khan’s failure to disclose all companies in which he held office or held a financial interest was inadvertent rather than deliberate and resulted in no personal benefit to him. Ms Keating said the companies that Cr Khan had not included in his returns were in name only and had never traded. Ms Keating called on Magistrate Therese McCarthy to avoid a conviction, arguing that any conviction would have “an excessively detrimental effect” on Cr Khan.
However, prosecution barrister Allan Sharp argued the local government inspectorate had issued Cr Khan with a written warning regarding the lodging of ordinary returns, and arranged subsequent training in 2015. Magistrate McCarthy said she did not have enough information to guide her in sentencing, and called for written submissions to explain the defence’s argument that Cr Khan had acted inadvertently, and detailed the extent of Cr Khan’s training. The matter will reconvene on July 12 for a sentencing hearing. Cr Khan declined to comment.
Teen’s bravery ends with three arrests
A person died following a collision in Manor Lakes last week. Police believe a hatchback veered onto the wrong side of Ballan Road, near Anniversary Avenue and Spring Plains Road, before hitting a Ford Falcon about 5.45pm on Thursday. The driver of the hatchback, who is yet to be identified, died at the scene. The driver of the Falcon, a 22-year-old Melton South man, had minor leg injuries after he was trapped in the wreckage. He was taken to hospital for treatment. Police are investigating. Anyone with information can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Olivia then called triple-0, as she saw a car enter the house’s driveway and men allegedly attempting to break into the house. The men allegedly entered the house and tried to open Olivia’s bedroom door, as she held it shut. Olivia said police were quick to arrive. “I’m relieved I didn’t get hurt,” she said. Olivia and her mother Lee-Anne said they wanted to thank the triple-0 operator and police, “who were amazing”. Senior Sergeant Aaron Riches praised Olivia’s actions. “When you reflect on what transpired, you have to give her total credit for remaining composed,” he said. “She acted in a mature manner and she was able to stay on the phone to the triple-0 operator and was able to give us information which was passed on to the police units, which were on their way to the scene. “She stood up in a difficult situation and because of her bravery, we were able to make three arrests.” On Thursday, police announced that three

18-year-old men, from Bundoora, Epping and Brookfield, have been charged with a total of 20 charges – including aggravated home invasion, aggravated intentional exposure of an emergency services worker to risk by driving, conduct endangering life and assault, burglary and theft charges – in relation to the incident.

Evening train commuters will get another 35 off-peak Werribee line services when a new timetable comes into effect later this year. The state government has announced it would add seven new metropolitan train services across the network each weekday, which will run before and after the evening peak and create room for an extra 1000 passengers on each service. Fatal crash in Manor Lakes
Fifteen-year-old Olivia Conder has been hailed for her bravery after she called police during an aggravated burglary while she was home alone last week. Olivia said she was in her family’s Hoppers Crossing house on Wednesday about 12.40pm, studying for exams, when she heard noises at the front door. She said at first she thought a parcel was being delivered, but she called her mother. “I said, ‘He’s not delivering a parcel, he won’t go away,’ and Mum said, ‘I’ll be home in five minutes’,” Olivia said.

Kevin Hillier wants a different approach to crime
H
ow safe do you feel in your own streets these days? The lyrics of Skyhooks’ 1970s classic: ‘Horror movie right there on my TV, horror movie it’s the 6.30 news,’ rings true (except for the time change). Murder, rape, home invasion and domestic violence have become staple items in every news bulletin. Footage of the accused abusing media and onlookers is the norm, and our justice system continues to fail us with cream puff sentencing. Police have so many hoops to jump through these days; they themselves are often onlookers because of political correctness and being outnumbered in gang situations. In among all that we have crime figures that apparently are coming down. Really? I think we now just have more categories so it is just spread into different boxes. We have to draw a line in the sand. We have to embrace zero tolerance. The death last week of Eurydice Dixon illustrates the depth of our plight. While we all have a responsibility of care to ourselves and our loved ones, the bigger issue is eradicating
the thinking that brings this kind of violence to our society. It is not a gender issue, it is a society issue. The only agenda here is safety and education. While emotions are high and social media is such an unfiltered medium of communication, calm, clear-thinking leadership is required. We all want the same thing and hopefully we can achieve it without the need to blame, deride and be dismissive of the opinions of others. There is no unity in division and here we have a single goal to achieve. Anyone making it about themselves or for the advancement of their career should be ashamed. We don’t need spruikers, we need meaningful action. We can be a leader in the implementation of programs that will change behaviour and thinking for the future. Our council could and should be a facilitator here in bringing people together in a community-led forum involving all the relevant parties. While I am not a fan of talk fests, this one might be productive and beneficial. â–

Drug charges
Police responded to reports of people gathering inside a vacant property on Pauline Way in Tarneit, about 6pm on June 8. A 16-year-old Truganina boy was arrested for possession of drugs and was remanded in custody. Police said that six other men would be charged in relation to trespassing.

Here is your first look at the $93 million expansion of Werribee Mercy Hospital. The upgrade, which spans four storeys at the northern end of the hospital, above the Catherine McAuley Centre, includes an eight-bed intensive care unit, 56 inpatient beds, six additional operating theatres and a new central sterile department. It also includes a multi-storey carpark. Building work has been completed and the internal fit-out is under way, with final furniture and medical equipment deliveries expected in coming weeks. The mammoth expansion is the biggest investment in the hospital since it opened in 1994. Mercy Health health services chief executive Linda Mellors said the new facilities would open to the public in stages from August. “Many of our staff and some local GPs have now completed tours of the expansion and are thoroughly impressed by what they have seen,” Adjunct Professor Mellors said. “We are confident that our community members will value the new services and the lovely amenities built into the design, such as a wellness garden, family sitting areas and expansive views to the city, the You Yangs and the bay.” Adjunct Professor Mellors said a medical director and nurse unit manager for the ICU had been appointed. The hospital is still on the lookout for more ICU nurses, perioperative nurses and technicians, midwives, mental health nurses, emergency nurses, general medical nurses and allied health workers and clinical support service staff. Mercy lifeline for Geelong hospital staff
By Alesha Capone The family and friends of Point Cook teenager Josh Erikson have started an online fundraising campaign to help the 17-year-old tick off some of the items on his bucket list. Josh’s mother, Donna Erikson-Rigby said the money raised would also be used to help pay for her son’s medical treatment. Mrs Erikson-Rigby said Josh, who has glioblastoma multiforme (GM) brain cancer, has experienced a tougher life than many of his peers. “I think he has suffered more in 17-and-a-half-years than some people do in their whole lives, but he’s very strong and determined,” she said. Mrs Erikson-Rigby gave birth to Josh and his identical twin brother Matthew at 27 weeks gestation. Sadly, Matthew passed away a few days later, while Josh was diagnosed as profoundly deaf. In 2005, he was diagnosed with leukaemia and underwent intensive chemotherapy and radiation. Mrs Erikson-Rigby said they were lucky that Josh’s eldest brother was a 100 per cent bone marrow match for him. After a marrow donation, Josh spent nine weeks in isolation at the Royal Children’s Hospital before coming home. Josh remained cancer free for years, but in 2016 he was diagnosed with a GM tumour, for which there is no cure. He had surgery to remove the tumour and went through more than six weeks of radiation afterwards. Last month, Josh had an MRI which showed two new tumours growing. He underwent a 6.5 hour-long surgery at the Royal Children’s Hospital to remove them.
Workers who have lost their jobs due to the closure of Geelong Private Hospital will be encouraged to apply for employment at Werribee Mercy Hospital. The Geelong-based hospital, which employed more than 290 people, closed last week. Health Minister Jill Hennessy told Parliament earlier this month that she had visited Geelong to announce that the state government would support Barwon Health in delivering 117 positions to ensure some of the former Geelong workers could be re-employed in areas including nursing, allied health, administration and cleaning. Ms Hennessy told Parliament that “additional positions” would be made available at Mercy Health, including at Werribee Mercy Hospital. “Mercy Health is currently recruiting for a range of roles, and Geelong Private Hospital workers are encouraged to apply,” she said. Ms Hennessy said Mercy Health was in the process of recruiting 161 full-time equivalent positions. She also said that once the $200 million Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital was built in Sunshine, a further 130 full-time equivalent vacancies would be created in the area. The women’s and children’s hospital is scheduled to open next year.

Station parking bid gains traction By Charlene Macaulay Tarneit train station could be one step closer to getting more parking. Sonia Dhillon, who works for Tarneit MP Telmo Languiller, has started a petition to highlight the shortage of carparking spaces for V/Line’s second busiest station. Ms Dhillon said it was possible the project could be funded under VicTrack’s station carpark upgrades program, which last year added another 150 spaces at Williams Landing train station.
She said a petition that could be tabled in Parliament was the best chance of getting a favourable result and she is trying to get as many signatures as possible in the next month. Mr Languiller has already agreed to table the petition and lobby the relevant ministers. “Parking at Tarneit train station is a major concern for the commuters of Tarneit every day,” Ms Dhillon said. “It is obvious that the parking at the station is inadequate and that a solution must be found. “There is funding out there, this is a push towards getting it quicker.”

Ms Dhillon said she was open to what form a parking upgrade would take, whether it be a multi-level carpark or something else entirely. The petition is available to sign at Mr Languiller’s electorate office. Ms Dhillon will also be collecting signatures at Tarneit train station.
As reported by Star Star Weekly Weekly, commuters have been forced to park illegally at Tarneit train station, with no parking spaces left by 7.30am most weekdays. Wyndham council has fined more than 2921 commuters for parking along the Leakes Road entry to Tarneit station since July 1, 2015. To compound the issue, V/Line has erected fences to block commuters from parking on a vacant patch of land at Tarneit train station. A group of commuters will take to the steps of Parliament on Wednesday to protest the lack of parking at Tarneit train station.
Young guns take on bill These Tarneit Senior College students will get a taste of parliamentary life next month when they try to get their bill to become law. The year 12 students will spend the first week of their term two school holidays taking part in this year’s YMCA Youth Parliament. They are among 20 teams from across the state who will spend three days debating proposed legislation and taking part in a range of leadership activities. School captain Raiane Oliveira said the team would put forward a bill to mandate the introduction of rooftop gardens on government buildings across Melbourne’s CBD. Student leader Khaled Kenjo said countries such as Singapore, Japan, China and Paris had adopted similar measures. “We see the bill as one of the founding stones in addressing climate change, but it also goes to show that people of our generation are willing to address, are willing to understand, and are
willing to try their absolute best to reverse this current generation’s decisions. “It just looks beautiful. Imagine walking into the city and seeing green roofs, green walls, being able to go up to a terrace and enjoy some coffee and vitamin D.” The students met Lalor MP Joanne Ryan, Tarneit MP Telmo Languiller and Wyndham councillor Heather Marcus to discuss their bill, and also hope to meet other politicians. More than 25 Youth Parliament bills have gone on to become actual legislation, including drug-testing for drivers and over-the-counter availability of the morning-after pill. Raiane said the students were all passionate about law, politics and the environment, adding that the experience has helped them all to determine where they’d like their careers to go once they graduate. “One example of this is the Growth Areas Infrastructure Contribution (GAIC). This is funding the State Government provides for specific projects in fast growing areas. It is made up of tax contributions from landowners and developers in areas like Wyndham.” “The major fault of this model is the projects the GAIC funds. Red light for Point Cook market By Charlene Macaulay Wyndham council has knocked back plans for a fresh food market to rival South Melbourne Market. Point Cook landowner Joe Schembri proposed to build a $35 million undercover stall-based fresh food market spanning more than 17,000 square metres on a parcel of land on Point Cook Road between Saltwater Reserve and the Point Cook RAAF base. Councillors voted in line with an officer’s recommendation to refuse a planning permit
on the basis that it was an over development of the site and could result in unreasonable traffic on the surrounding roads. Despite voting down the proposal, councillor Mia Shaw said this type of development had merit. “However, I agree that concerns about strategic planning, design and landscaping, traffic and transport, the large reduction in carparking by 519 spaces, and the fact that the Department of Defence objected to this development means I cannot support this development on this site,” she said.

“Maybe if it was located on a more appropriate site and council officer recommendations were taken on board to ensure it was more consistent with planning schemes and other issues raised in this report, we would be having a different conversation.” Mr Schembri, who owns the land, said he
was unimpressed his requests to discuss the plans in further detail went unheeded. He believes the proposal was not taken seriously. “With other big projects, they sit down with the people who are proposing it, the councillors will ask questions, and if any issues are raised, we can correct it.” Mr Schembri said he was considering appealing to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Appeals Tribunal. “At the end of the day, I still want to put a market here, I’m trying to work out the best way we can agree [on the terms].”
Hoops project on a roll The Roller Devils Wheelchair Basketball Program is courting new players, including people who use wheelchairs – and those who don’t. The program, run by the Werribee Basketball Association and open to women and men, offers participants the use of a basketball wheelchair if they do not already own one. Anyone can join the team, whether they use a wheelchair full-time, sometimes or not at all. The association has worked with Basketball Victoria to re-develop the Roller Devils program, which was previously run by an outside group. The association re-launched the program in April, including the hiring of junior representative coach Jason Bryant. The Roller Devils program includes a weekly 90-minute session that is split into a 45-minute coaching period with Bryant and a 45-minute game between participants.
The training sessions include skills, drills and tactics, while the game is a full-length match. The Werribee Basketball Association is hoping to develop the Roller Devils program into a competition that will run alongside its other competitions. The Roller Devils program runs from 7.30pm on Thursdays at Eagle Stadium, Ballan Road, Werribee. Cost: $160 per term including a Werribee Devils player singlet. Cop shop’s long wait alarms MP By Alesha Capone A western metropolitan region MP has called on the state government to “take real action” to reduce wait times at Werribee police station. Dr Rachel Carling-Jenkins, a member of the state legislative council, has called on the police minister to look into ways to lessen the amount of time that people spend queuing at the station before speaking to an officer. Dr Carling-Jenkins said that one of her staff members attended the station last month to hand in some information.
“While waiting, she was alerted to the fact that people had been waiting for 90 minutes just to see an officer,” Dr Carling-Jenkins said. “The front desk had been unattended for hours and the waiting room had grown to well over 20 people. “After standing in line for 45 minutes, some people began to leave. “They were frustrated at the time they had wasted. “We’ve also had a number of constituents say they’ve had the same issue and walked out, who have said it’s not worth it to report their stolen
phone or something like that, which just raises the question: What information are police in Wyndham missing out on?” Dr Carling-Jenkins said that she wanted to make it clear that she was not blaming police for the problem. “This is not a criticism of police – it is an administration problem and a resourcing problem,” she said. Dr Carling-Jenkins said that as Wyndham was one of the fastest-growing local government areas in Victoria, the state government should take action on the issue.
Police Minister Lisa Neville said the state government had funded 3135 new police officers in four years. She said 27 new frontline officers were already working in Wyndham and a further 12 would be on the beat by about the middle of next year. “Our priority is to have more police out on the streets preventing and disrupting crime,” she said. “As the additional police hit the streets, we would expect to see further improvements in the crime rate.”
Station build fires up A $5.4 million CFA fire station under construction in Tarneit is on track to open in December. The station, which is funded by the state government, will be staffed by both career and volunteer firefighters. Tarneit MP Telmo Languiller and senior CFA members visited the station, which is being built at 417 Derrimut Road, on Friday. “This new fire station will be a vital addition to the Tarneit community, which is going through a period of significant population growth,” Mr Languiller said. CFA operations officer Alex Batty said the new station had been designed for 30 career staff plus volunteers. Mr Batty said the station would have four engine bays for firefighting vehicles. He said that the station would include an administration area with work spaces to include room for planning and training.
Mr Batty said a large concreted area at the rear of the property would be used for training. The new station is being built about three kilometres north of the current CFA station on Derrimut Road. “The station is being moved to a more central location for the area, which allows us to provide a service to the growing area of Tarneit, while still serving areas including Werribee, Hoppers Crossing, Point Cook and Truganina,” Mr Batty said. Appliances to be based at the station will include a heavy tanker, a tanker, a forward command vehicle and an LPG flare-off vehicle. Alesha Capone

Wyndham a national hotspot By Alesha Capone Three areas in Wyndham have been ranked among the nation’s top-20 population and residential building growth areas, in a report from the Housing Industry Association. The HIA – Australia’s peak residential building, renovation and development industry association – released its Hotspots report last week. The Mickleham-Yuroke area in Melbourne’s north placed first on the list, with a 35.3 per cent increase in its estimated residential population,
which grew to 4807 people between June 2016 and June last year. There was also new housing approvals valued at $222 million issued in Mickleham-Yuroke during the 2016-17 financial year (compared to $126 million in the previous 12 months). Point Cook east was ninth on the list with an annual estimated residential population increase of 12.8 per cent, to 14,545 people as of June last year. Point Cook north and Point Cook south also experienced estimated population increases of 2.4 per cent and 10.9 per cent respectively,
bringing their total populations to 25,012 and 16,964 by June last year. There were 966 new housing approvals for Point Cook in the 2016-17 financial year, with a total value of $310 million, compared to 1074 approvals in the previous 12 months, valued at $322 million. Truganina placed 10th on the list with an 11.9 per cent increase in its estimated population, to 27,952 people, and $202 million of new housing approvals, compared to $236 million in the previous 12 months. Tarneit was 15th on the list with $299
million in new housing approvals (compared to $156 million in the previous 12 months) and a 9 per cent rise in its estimated population, at 39,082 people. HIA’s senior economist Shane Garrett said Melbourne had 12 out of 20 hotspots on the national list. “With a large volume of work still to be commenced … population growth still exceeding 2 per cent, Melbourne and its surrounding areas are likely to produce many hotspots for building activity going into 2019,” Mr Garrett said.
Time for new connection Truganina South Primary School is the first school in Wyndham to sign up for a program to connect pupils with volunteers who support the children’s education and wellbeing. Not-for-profit organisation EdConnect is rolling out the program – which is funded by the state government – across the Wyndham, Melton and Hume municipalities. Under the initiative, volunteers help pupils to develop their numeracy, reading or science skills. The volunteers also help out around schools, including in the canteen, garden and library. They undergo a screening process, as well as training, to ensure they can work with both primary and secondary school students. Truganina South Primary School principal Linda Danese said teachers and staff were “excited and looking forward to having this program in our school”. “We have some children who are at risk of
becoming disengaged and this program will really help in keeping them involved,” Ms Danese said. EdConnect’s liaison officer Rhonda Velkovski said almost two thirds of the school volunteers were aged over 55 years old. “We are harnessing the wisdom and skills of elder generations and … young people are thriving,” she said. “One hundred per cent of our schools have reported the improvement of student self-esteem and confidence, while 91 per cent of at-risk students have improved literacy and 87 per cent of students have improved in numeracy.” Ms Velkovski said schools can contact EdConnect about the volunteering program. Youth summit flagged Wyndham Police Inspector Marty Allison has announced that local police will partner with Wyndham council and other organisations to hold a youth summit later this year. Inspector Allison said the summit would be held in September and it would explore “what is missing in Wyndham” from the perspective of young people. Inspector Allison said the event would hear from three groups of youth: those who have had no contact with the justice system, those who have had some contact with the justice system and those who have spent time in custody, such as at the Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre. Inspector Allison made the announcement about the youth summit at the Wyndham
Community and Education Centre (WCEC), during the launch of the “My House is Safe” fridge magnet. WCEC settlement services co-ordinator, Richard Dove said the magnet was designed to help residents who come from culturally and linguistically diverse communities. The magnet includes tips on how to prevent home burglaries, such as getting to know your neighbours; locking windows and doors; and not answering the door to strangers. Home away from home By Charlene Macaulay Young adults with disabilities will no longer have to move into a nursing home or stay with their parents to get the care they need. Empowered Liveability, a disability-specific property development company, has teamed with disability service providers GenU to build a number of specialist disability individual and share houses across Victoria, including six in Wyndham. One of the first to be under construction is a property in Wyndham Vale that, once complete, will allow three adults with high-care needs to live independently with round-the-clock care. Empowered Liveability co-director Nicole Doherty said the organisation was founded on the belief that people with a disability should not be forced into unsuitable living conditions, such as aged care facilities. “The point is to have them in newer estates that have better accessibility … closer to shopping centres, movies, train stations, super clinics, all of those things that you sometimes don’t get in more established areas,” she said. GenU executive general manager Brandon Howard said this was the first time his organisation had offered supported accommodation in Wyndham. “There are a lot of individuals who are still living with mum and dad at home, the parents are getting elderly and they’re really concerned about their adult children – who could be 45 or 50 – and what’s going to happen to them when they pass away. Free start for Skybus service There is good news ahead for Wyndham residents who are planning a trip to Melbourne Airport in the near future. Earlier this month, SkyBus announced it would start running a direct bus service – named the Western Express – between Werribee and the Melbourne Airport from July 1. SkyBus has since announced that during the service’s first two weeks of operation, passengers will be able to catch the bus to the airport for free. SkyBus co-chief executive and director, Michael Sewards said passengers would be able to enjoy travelling on the buses at no cost for a fortnight. The Western Express service will pick up passengers outside the Werribee RSL before stopping at the Tarneit train station and continuing onto the airport. The service will operate seven days a week between 7am and 7pm. Werribee MP Tim Pallas welcomed the announcement, which he described as “great news for people out west”. Last year, SkyBus began running services between Werribee and Avalon airport as part of its express Melbourne-to-Avalon shuttle service. The Avalon-Melbourne buses stop at the Werribee RSL on Synnot Street. More than 3.8 million trips are taken on SkyBus each year. Details: www.skybus.com.au

MY WYNDHAM Six nights a week, Hoppers Crossing teenager Natalie McCrea can be found playing or coaching basketball. The 15-year-old’s love of the game was fostered from an early age by her mother Karen and father Clinton, who died in 2016 after a heart attack. Natalie tells Alesha Capone that her involvement in the sport makes her feel close to her father. What do you enjoy most about basketball? It has to be the friends you make – that’s the main thing. I train an under-12s girls team for the Iramoo Basketball Club, and also train and coach them during their games on Saturdays. I play with the under-16s for Werribee and the under-16s for Iramoo. I also film the Big V games for Werribee. Being part of the Werribee Basketball Association, it’s very small and everyone’s connected, willing to work together and it’s more of a family. I’ve got lots of friends who play for different clubs, so we all have fun when we compete against each other. When did you start coaching? I started coaching last year. My mum coached me when I was really young, and she wanted to coach again … she thought I would be good too, so she got me to help her. Now, this year, I’m the coach and she supervises me.
It can be pretty hard to fit everything in with school. I love all my subjects. I hope to study sports science at university. Can you tell me a bit about your father? Dad was a basketballer. Mum was a netballer … dad got us all involved in basketball. Since I

was born, he was always coaching and helping kids, to make sure they had a coach. Sometimes he coached multiple teams, so no one would miss out. I used to train with the boys if he didn’t have enough players. I would also draw
plays for his team, and sometimes he would use them. We lived in Keilor and then moved to Hoppers Crossing. He was coaching the under-18 Werribee Devils side when he passed
away. Playing basketball is how I feel close to him. He would always connect with his players and would be friends with them outside sport. They would come over to our house for dinner. Some of them are almost like brothers to me.

Bowling maidens over Howzat! Hoppers Crossing Cricket Club is on its way to achieving a hat-trick, aiming to field three women’s teams for the 2018-19 season. Club president Jake Porter said the club was so happy with the success of its first women’s side that it was now recruiting more women to field a second team and a junior girls team. “What we’re trying to do is further branch out,� he said. The Sunshine Action Committee has asked the Minister for Local Government to conduct an inquiry into Werribee Shire Council alleging improper issue of permits to industrialists in the Laverton North area. Chief target of the group is Cr. Stuart Southwick, shire president, whose business interests are located in the Laverton North industrial area.
Mounted police are patrolling the streets of Werribee following a spate of daylight burglaries which have hit the town during the past month. Police have recorded 37 burglaries committed in the Werribee district since the start of March until 3 June, an average of more than one a day.
Group Four, the operators of the privately-run Port Phillip Prison, have given the State Government their strategy on how to improve management of the troubled jail. The report, which was handed over on Friday, was ordered by the Government following an ongoing spate of problems ranging from suicide attempts and drug overdoses through to the $250,000 riot in March.
Eight aged-care residents at Heathglen Lodge in Werribee will be forced out of their supported residential service units by the end of next month. The operators of the lodge plan to turn those units into high-care residential accommodation.

Youngsters from the playgroup, including Zack, 3, visit Mercy Place Wyndham once every four weeks as part of an intergenerational program. The preschool students, who are aged between three and four years, play music and sing songs for residents in the Mercy Place’s Memory Support Unit. In addition to bringing smiles and laughter to the Mercy Place residents, the program gives pupils a chance to hear the life stories of the senior citizens, who in turn enjoy meeting children who are a similar age to many of their own grandchildren. CONSIDER THE SAUCE There is no chickening out for Kenny Weir at this new set-up The Art Of Fried Chicken has taken over two shopfronts that have long been empty since the days they housed two Asian eateries. They – and the walkway between them that used to lead to the original Laksa King – have been turned into a single premises. TAFC is a food truck operation putting down bricks-and-mortar roots, though I suspect the building as a whole is destined for development somewhere along the way. It’s fitting, then, that this new fried chook joint has something of a makeshift vibe about it – less restaurant and more food-truck-withoutwheels, with rudimentary seating. That’s OK by us. As well, we’re happy to give them some leeway in terms of assessment as we are visiting in the opening hours of their opening day. Such is not ideal for CTS story purposes, of course, but that’s how the timing has worked out – post-Saturday morning kung fu, it’s been an easy and choice option. Plus: We’re hungry. We arrive about 12.20pm and are served quickly. About 10 minutes later, the place is a whole lot more crowded; the word is out. We ignore the opening day $1 wingettes and rib specials. Of the menu listings, we ignore those under the Things With Bread and the Chicken Without Bones headings. Actually, we are bemused anyone would order the latter. Why order breast when you

What we get: Three pieces of regular Art Of Chicken ($15), three pieces of Asian Hot Nashville Chicken ($16), Mama’s Vietnamese slaw ($5.50) and chips ($5.50). It’s all pretty good. Even the chunkier meat pieces are juicy (or at least not dry), though inevitably it’s the bone-dominated items that are the most tasty. Bennie is disappointed at the mildness of the spice hit in the Nashville poultry, though the spicing appears to be a bit random, as the wing I have gives me a right nice glow. He rates the chips highly. Myself, not so much; they could, IMO, be hotter and less greasy. (Just to re-iterate: This is opening day, so some leeway is in order.) Perhaps best of all is the Viet slaw – it’s excellent. The Art Of Fried Chicken is destined to be a Flemo hit. Will we return? You bet. 800g Sebago potatoes 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 leek, trimmed, halved, washed and thinly sliced 2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced 400g piece double smoked ham, diced (you can find this at the supermarket deli) 535g can country chicken soup 100g grated tasty cheese Preheat oven to 180 degrees celcius (160 fan forced). Grease a six cup capacity baking dish. Peel and boil potatoes for 12 to 15 minutes or until just tender. Drain. Cool for a few minute then slice. Heat oil in large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add leek and cook, stirring, until softened. Add garlic and ham. Cook for 2 minutes. Stir in soup. Gently stir through potatoes, season with pepper and place in baking dish. Sprinkle with cheese and bake for 30 minutes or until golden.

Fast-start Warriors win By Ewen McRae A barnstorming opening term was the difference between Hoppers Crossing and Albion on Saturday, with the Warriors claiming an important win in Western Region Football League division 1. Kicking with the aid of a strong breeze to start the game, Hoppers Crossing conceded the first six-pointer before kicking seven unanswered goals to open up a match-winning lead. They went on to win 14.10 (94) - 11.7 (73) at JR Parsons Reserve. Warriors coach Steve Kretiuk said the good start was important, especially with Albion rallying in the final quarter to close the gap. “We came into the game knowing they’re really hard to beat there, so we made a concerted effort to get off to a good start and take the sting out of the game for them,” he said. “We were able to control the stoppages and get first possession, which tends to happen when we win games … I thought we adjusted to the size of the ground and made good choices going forward, especially early on. “To Albion’s credit, they fought back, but no matter how you play or what the margin is, it’s always good to get a win at Albion.” Holding a 38-point lead at the first break, Hoppers Crossing kicked two handy goals against the breeze in the second term, including a smart snap by Mitchell Palma, to minimise the impact of the home side’s four majors for the quarter. Gellibrand Oval is one of the most identifiable and picturesque in sport in the west, but like the naughty child, when it is bad it is very bad, and boy was it bad on Sunday. A miserable, cold, wet and windy day was had by all who braved the home of the Seagulls. Williamstown and Sandringham tried hard, but even from the warmth of my lounge room it was not a sight to behold. What a shock it must have been to those St Kilda-listed players more accustomed to playing under the roof at Etihad Stadium. Mind you, it was a better game to watch than some of the AFL games played in pristine conditions. At least we saw some one-on-one contests. Willy created history by keeping Sandy goalless.

can say with 100 per cent certainty that my recent ambivalence to the game has nothing to do with the current form of the Bulldogs. The boys are not going well and are most certainly not great to watch. I did like Bob Murphy’s analogy recently when he said words to the effect of “Winning the flag for Hawthorn or Geelong is like climbing a mountain – they look for another mountain, whereas for the Bulldogs it was like landing on the moon.” Like a lot of Bulldogs fans, for me it still seems like a dream. I suspect because it was so unexpected, many of us have still not really come to terms with it and maybe some of the players are the same. Are we all still basking in the glory of that win? I suspect we are, and even subconsciously it has affected the desperate need for success that was such a driving force for decades.

Melbourne Colts don’t play in the WRFL any more and while that still seems weird, it makes perfect sense – given their geographic location and junior recruiting area – that they play in the Southern Football League. Their history though will always be linked to the west, and no more so than in a few weeks when they celebrate the 20th anniversary of their senior and reserves 1998 premierships. It was a day of glory for the Des Tuddenham-coached Colts, defeating Spotswood in the seniors and Parkside in the reserves. The Western Jets fell to just their third loss of the TAC Cup season at the weekend, losing to Geelong after struggling in the forward half through the middle of the game. The Jets hit the front late in the final quarter, but the Falcons ran out the game stronger, coming away with a 8.10 (58) - 6.12 (48) win at Avalon Airport Oval. Stand-in Jets coach Tom Perrett said while it was disappointing not to take the win, he was proud of the efforts of his side after six players left the side after making the Vic Metro squad for the national championships. “What we asked from everyone at the start of the day was to bring that Jets attitude and effort, and by and large across the day we saw

Werribee City nails a gritty win, eyes promotion fight Werribee City is steeling itself for a shot at promotion after a dour and hard-fought NPL 2 west soccer victory over Murray United. Despite several chances coming throughout the game, just one shot found the back of the net as City walked away with the points. City coach Sergio Sabbadini said their opponents frustrated them with their defensive play, but his side got what it wanted out of the clash in the end. “We played very well and probably should have won by more, but we squandered a couple of chances,” he said. “They came to get a point – they told us after the game that they came for a draw. So they were very defensive and wasted a bit of time, which was a bit frustrating for us. But we were able to break them up at the end of the game. “I’m sure if we’d scored in the first half they would have been a bit more attacking, but our
substitutions really opened the game up in the second half and we were able to get the result we were after.” Werribee missed two opportunities to score early with just the keeper to beat, forcing a save on one shot before sending the second one wide. Substitute Ted Yabio broke the deadlock in the second half. Left back Nick Bavcar carried the ball forward down the wing before crossing to winger Trevor Ssemakula, who found Yabio in space for the breakthrough. With Werribee City sitting in eighth place in NPL 2 west, Sabbadini said wins like the one over Murray United were important if his side was to push up a congested table and compete for promotion. “We’ve picked up some good players in the transfer window, so we’re probably at our strongest at the moment,” he said.
“Hopefully, this gives us a chance now to have a go at one of the promotion spots. “When there’s four or five games to go you want to be thereabouts. “We’ve just got to be a bit more consistent and not drop points like we did a couple of weeks ago to Goulburn Valley. “If we’d won that we’d probably be third on the ladder now – so we’ve got to get back to our best.” Ewen McRae

Tigers let chances slip By Ewen McRae Werribee was left to rue a number of missed chances in its Women’s Vic League 1 hockey clash with Brunswick on Saturday, eventually having to settle for a frustrating draw. The Tigers dominated possession for much of the game, peppering the Brunswick circle to create a number of scoring chances. But they had to wait until the final 10 minutes of the game, when they were coming from behind, to grab a 1-1 draw. Werribee coach Les McAlinden said his side played the better hockey, but lacked a bit of polish up front. “It was a good game, but unfortunately we couldn’t take our opportunities,” McAlinden said. “We should have beaten them, and beaten them convincingly, but we missed some open 66 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 20, 2018
goals and the result just didn’t go our way. So in the end, a good draw, but we should have got the three points.” While Werribee had the better of possession, both sides struggled up front in the opening half. Brunswick opened the scoring after a fast break saw the Tigers’ defence exposed. But Brunswick held the lead for only a matter of minutes before Werribee equalised through Caitlin Spence after some good lead-up field play. Rachel Catania was again solid in goal for Werribee, keeping out good shots to keep the Tigers in the contest as time ran out. McAlinden said that despite notching up just two wins in the first half of the season, his team was on the right path. “We knew this season was going to be an interesting one, and we’ve been struck down
with injuries which are taking their toll, but we’re slowly getting into it,” he said. “We knew it was going to be tough after going up a grade, but we feel like a win is not far off. “All the girls are improving each week … we’ve been competitive even against the strong sides, so we just need to take a few more of our chances and another win will come.” Werribee’s Men’s Vic League 2 side trounced ECHO by six goals. Daniel Manzie and Sam Huxtable scored a brace each, while Navpreet Singh and Jamie Beamish also hit the scoreboard in a 6-0 romp that kept the Tigers in touch with the top four. They are sitting in sixth place, just a game outside the finals places and with a superior goal difference to the sides immediately above them.
Werribee Devils came away from a double-header weekend of women’s Big V division 1 basketball with two important wins that have moved them to the brink of the top four. The Devils travelled to face Geelong on Saturday, returning with a hard-fought 68-63 win. On Sunday, at home, they had a more comfortable time of it against Western Port Steelers in the form of a 76-57 triumph. The Saturday game was tight throughout as the Supercats put up a strong fight in front of their home fans, but the Devils were able to make the hosts pay more on their turnovers. The Devils scored 12 points from turnovers compared to the Supercats’ four. Georgia Tauschke produced a fantastic all-round game for the visitors with 17 points, 14 rebounds and six assists. Sam Moodie (15 points, 17 rebounds) and Alyssa Bennett (11 points, eight rebounds) also did good work. In the Sunday game, Jessy Price topped the scoring with 19 points and had seven assists, while Danni Pisano and Bennett both collected 17 points. It was a dominant performance across the board, with the Devils collecting more rebounds, blocks, steals and assists, while also giving up less turnovers as the Steelers struggled. Centrals win on an ‘insane’ day By Ewen McRae Werribee Centrals staged a remarkable second-half comeback against Belmont to steal a thrilling one-point win on Saturday and stay in touch with the Geelong District Football League leading sides. Having kicked 1.16 by the midway point of the third quarter, the Centurions were able to straighten up in front of goal and take the lead early in the final quarter before landing the sealing six-pointer in the 32nd minute of the final term to take the win. The Centrals prevailed 11.17 (83)-11.16 (82) at Galvin Park. Centurions coach Nick Smith said his side had a forgettable first half, but half-time changes and young legs got them back in it. “It was just an insane day,” Smith said. “We were just playing terribly – not finishing in front of goal, allowing them to score. We were seven goals down before we kicked our second goal, so we left ourselves with plenty of work to do. “We changed pretty much everything at half-time. Threw defenders forward, put bigger bodies in the middle – I was basically just throwing magnets at the board, trying to find something that would work. And eventually it did. “We’re a pretty young side, and we generally finish games stronger than others, but we haven’t always been in front at the final siren so it was nice to grab this one.” When the goals did come for the Centrals they came in a rush. They closed within three
goals of Belmont by three-quarter time and hit the front just seven minutes into the last quarter. In a thrilling final term, the sides traded blows as they tried to create a break. It was Tasmanian recruit Nick Bauld who grabbed the final goal of the match to ensure a win for the home side.

Tito Nyawela and Jackson Smith helped to turn the game in the midfield for the hosts, while Nathan Johnson was good in the ruck all day. “We’ve come from five goals down the last couple of weeks without being in front at the end, so to get the win was big for this group,” Smith said. “We’ve not beaten all the teams below us and lost to the teams above us, so we are where we should be at this point of the season. “We’ve now got a great opportunity this week against the reigning premiers [Bell Post Hill] … we go into that one with some real confidence and belief after a result like that.”
