Rubbish trip for council By Charlene Macaulay Wyndham council has dumped more than $31,000 on a three-week European trip to check out waste facilities across several countries. Mayor Peter Maynard, city operations director Stephen Thorpe and Werribee tip manager Simon Clay flew out to the UK on Monday to look at recent investments in alternative waste treatment and disposal technology – including resource recovery and pre-treatment, anaerobic digestion and thermal treatment. They will also meet two councils about their waste services and suppliers of alternative waste technology.
From there, the trio will head to Spain to chat with waste experts and then visit landfills in Italy, France and Switzerland, before spending the final week in Munich to attend the Leading Trade Fair for Environmental Technologies to meet all the major European suppliers of waste management, treatment and disposal. The trip will run until May 19. Mr Thorpe said the tour was part of Wyndham council’s plan to transition from landfilling at the Werribee tip, with a view to diverting 90 per cent of the city’s waste from landfill by 2040. “There’s a lot of companies that are active in Australia that are wanting to sell [waste] technology … but we only know what they

choose to tell us,” he said. “Part of this is actually going and visiting sites and seeing it in action, but also going to the trade fair and being able to choose who we want to talk to about the different technologies.” Cr Maynard added: “I know there’s going to be some people who won’t agree with what we’re doing … [but] we won’t be sunning ourselves
on the riviera.” Once back, the trio will only have a couple of days to re-group before Wyndham council heads to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal for a five-day hearing, starting on May 21 over the expansion of operations at Werribee tip. The Western Region Environment Centre (WREC) has successfully applied for VCAT to undertake a review of the EPA’s decision to approve an expansion of Werribee tip that would allow the council to build four cells that can reach up to 29 metres above natural ground level. That is the height limit enforced on the tip’s existing cells.

Point Cook cop station funding By Alesha Capone A new police station at Point Cook is a step closer after the state government allocated funds to search for and acquire land in yesterday’s state budget. Altona MP Jill Hennessy welcomed the funding, describing it as “a significant first step in building a police station in Point Cook”. According to the budget, $41.4 million has been set aside to acquire the Point Cook land, as well as the relocation of the East Melbourne Police Station. The budget did not state how much of the $41.4 million would be dedicated
to each project. In other budget highlights: • $20 million has been set aside to acquire land for the redevelopment of the Werribee and Bendigo justice precincts; • $10.8 million for extra regional rail services, including 20 additional shoulder-peak services to and from Wyndham Vale; • $1 million for planning of a “potential” expansion of Werribee Open Range Zoo; and • $1 million to fund the next stage of the Greening the Pipeline project, which will convert Truganina’s Main Outfall Sewer Reserve into parkland.
The budget papers said funding would be provided to upgrade the Princes Highway and Wattle Avenue intersection, but did not detail what these works would consist of or how much they would cost. It also stated service improvements would be delivered to the metropolitan bus network on selected routes, including Werribee, and that funding would be provided for a tech school in Wyndham. The budget includes $2.1 million each for the CFA Wyndham Vale fire station and Truganina fire station projects. As announced by the state government
last month, the budget features $96.8 million to build Davis Creek Primary School, Point Cook South Senior Secondary School and Wyndham South (Riverwalk) Primary School, all earmarked to open for term one in 2020. A further $7.8 million was committed for the second stages of Sanctuary Lakes P-9 College and Truganina East P-9 colleges, including new performing arts and physical education buildings for each school. Stage five works at Manor Lakes College were allocated $982,100, stage two works at Tarneit Senior Secondary College $414,000, and works at Werribee Secondary College, $259,100.

New sports program off and running program begins from years 5 and 6 at the junior campus. Once students come to the school’s senior campus, the team works with selected students on a more regular basis. He said about 110 students were involved in the program this year, with student numbers expected to expand. “We had high numbers of kids that were either representing teams at state level in those sports, and we’ve got PE staff here that are pretty familiar with the coaching side of those sports, so we can give the kids a lot more technical and practical knowledge,” he said.

Werribee MP Tim Pallas last week announced the completion of stage one, during which pipes were laid from the Princes Freeway to Aviation Road. Mr Pallas said stage two works – which will start from near Aviation Road and continue along part of Diggers Road and O’Connors Road – would be finished by September this year. The state government and Southern Rural Water’s Werribee customers have supplied funding of $21 million for the first three stages of the works, which are due for completion by the end of 2019. The overall cost of the project’s five stages, to lay 40 kilometres of pipeline, has been estimated at $31.3 million. Both the state government and Southern Rural Water have called on the federal government to provide the remaining funds needed to complete the project, through its National Water Infrastructure Development Fund. Wyndham’s growth still strong By Alesha Capone New statistics confirm Wyndham has the second-fastest growing municipal population in Victoria, with more than 13,814 residents arriving in a 12-month period. The Australian Bureau of Statistics last week released data showing Wyndham’s population increased 6.1 per cent, from 228,088 to 241,902, in the 2016-17 financial year. During the same period, the municipality of Casey, in Melbourne’s south-east, topped the state for population growth with 13,859
new residents bringing its total population to 327,380. In terms of individual suburbs, Cranbourne East topped the growth list with 7338 new residents coming into the area. Melbourne placed second with 4631 new residents. Tarneit came in third with 3270 new residents, increasing its population nine per cent overall, from 36,532 people to 39,802 people. Truganina was fourth with 2975 new residents, a population increase of 11.9 per cent, taking its total population from 24,977 to 27,952.
Across metropolitan Melbourne, overseas migration was a major contributor to population growth, bringing in 80,000 additional residents in the 2016-17 financial year. In Wyndham, 4741 overseas migrants moved into the area. Only the municipalities of Melbourne and Monash (with 9316 migrants and 6734 migrants respectively) welcomed more migrants than Wyndham. Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard said: “Wyndham is currently experiencing both the second fastest and second largest
growth in population of any municipality in Victoria. This presents an incredible number of challenges, particularly when it comes to delivering adequate infrastructure for our booming communities. “Some of the key projects we’ve highlighted include the need for more stations on the regional rail link and additional train capacity on the Werribee line. We have called on the State Government to deliver the Black Forest Rd Station in Wyndham Vale, the Davis Rd Station in Tarneit West and the Truganina Station within five years.�
Show of unity for youth A new arts project is set to showcase the positive contributions that Wyndham’s young residents make to the community. The Wyndham Youth Council Committee, which is made up of members aged between 16 and 25 years, has launched the One Wyndham project. Wyndham’s learning city portfolio holder, Cr Josh Gilligan, said during the next two years, the project would profile young residents through a range of creative mediums. He said the young people’s stories would be displayed at different venues throughout Wyndham, including on the big screen outside AquaPulse in Hoppers Crossing. “The members of the youth council committee have identified that they and other young people are not always being portrayed positively, despite all of the positive contributions they are regularly making to our community,� Cr Gilligan said.
“We have more than 41,000 young people between the ages of 12 and 25 in Wyndham, and more than 15 per cent of them are involved in volunteering within their community. “This is a great way of changing the narrative about young people and giving some of them the credit they deserve for their accomplishments.� Cr Gilligan said young people interested in being part of the project could nominate themselves, or friends and family members could nominate an inspiring young person to have their story told. He said young people from all cultural backgrounds would be welcome to participate in the initiative. Nominations for One Wyndham will close on May 30 this year. Wyndham councillor Intaj Khan could make about $23 million in just over six months from the sale of a large block of land. Cr Khan is selling a 24.6-hectare site in Rockbank that is designated for a major town centre plus apartments and townhouses. Price expectations are understood to be about $50 million for the rectangular land parcel at 886-940 Leakes Road which Mr Khan and a fellow Melbourne investor, Kurminder Singh, acquired in October last year from Taiwanese investors for $15.95 million. The site is part of a new suburb called Rockbank North – approved in 2012 – and is next to Mirvac’s top-selling $2.5 billion Woodlea estate. Just over 19 hectares is designated for a major town centre that could support 160,000 square metres of shops, offices and hotels, and with a 3.7-hectare portion for apartments and townhouses. Cr Khan, through his Western Institute of Technology, owns 70 per cent of the site and Mr Singh the remaining 30 per cent. In September last year – a month before he settled on the Rockbank site – Victoria’s Local Government Investigations and Compliance (LGIC) Inspectorate filed nine charges against Cr Khan of which six related to his failure to disclose a shareholding or position in a number of companies and two related to a failure to submit ordinary returns. None of the charges relate to the Rockbank land. One of the charges, relating to a failure to disclose property holdings within the municipal district of the council, has since been dropped. Cr Khan is contesting the charges.

Councillor ready to sell site

The site’s selling agents, Frank Nagle and Andrew Egan of Biggin & Scott Land, said Cr Khan recognised the development of the land required the expertise of a major retail developer and, given that nearby development was quickly reaching his site, he was now prepared to sell. “Very few offerings of an entire town centre are ever released to the market; the only one released in the state was the Armstrong Street Town Centre that was bought by Welsh Group in 2016,” Mr Egan said. “We expect both local and international interest in the site – we believe it will suit overseas parties as it has no planning risk and offers enormous upside of the development cycle.” Mr Khan did not respond to requests from The Australian Financial Review or Star Weekly for comment. – Australian Financial Review

Frenchship for Tarneit French students experienced life in an Australian school last week when a delegation from College Sainte Marie visited Tarneit P-9 College. Students and teachers from the sister schools, who have been in contact via Skype and email since 2014, finally got the chance to meet face to face when the 26 students from Chartres arrived in Melbourne last week and stayed with host families from the Tarneit school. Tarneit P-9 principal Rynn Anderson said the Normandy students were treated to Australian-themed art and cooking classes, a traditional Aussie barbecue, an AFL game, a movie night and a visit to Healesville Sanctuary. The two schools signed a memorandum of understanding, with Tarneit P-9 College
students to reciprocate the visit by travelling to France next year. Sainte Marie English teacher Thierry Jullien said the students had been pleasantly surprised by how respectful and kind Australians were, the laid-back culture they experienced and the level of multiculturalism at the Tarneit school. He said he was thrilled to meet the people he had been chatting with for so many years, and was considering a return trip next year to sightsee at his leisure. “It’s just like a dream come true,” he said. “The project is called ‘Two Countries for One World’, and I think we’re achieving that.” Charlene Macaulay

I think the latter is definitely true of all politicians in the current political climate. They don’t seem to have the ability to express an original view or opinion on anything; they can only oppose and criticise what their opponents are doing. That says a lot about the quality of candidates, doesn’t it? Intelligent, open-minded thinkers without an axe to grind are not leaping forward to run for office, are they? Who could blame them? Ann Peacock spoke at the Werribee Football Club ladies’ day function last Saturday about throwing her hat in and out of the ring for the position of Lord Mayor of Melbourne. In the end, the things that she is most passionate about changing and making better looked like they may have got lost in the bureaucratic wash. She decided she is more likely to achieve her goals through her ongoing charity groups

Why would someone leave the private sector to go to a world where the handbrakes to progress are so numerous? The short answer is: They don’t. And until we do something about it, we will get the candidates and representatives we deserve. The sooner governing on all levels is about action, accountability and outcomes rather than endless paperwork, committees and consultants all covering their posteriors, the better it will be for all of us. Local pride is something we want in all our representatives, but it needs to come with a modicum of reality. We all know our area is not perfect. We see the blemishes every day, and acknowledging them and trying to improve them is something we can all share. Ignoring them or dismissing them as non-existent is ridiculous – the kind of head in the sand thinking that has held back this area for years. It’s like blaming the dog for the smell at the kitchen table … we all know the truth. Deal with it. ■

By Charlene Macaulay He’s been part of the furniture for the past 34 years – but last week Hoppers Crossing Secondary College farewelled long-time teacher and principal Wayne Terrill. The Werribee resident, who started at Hoppers Crossing as a first-year physical education and maths teacher in 1984 and became principal in 2006, announced his resignation on the last day of term one. He will take up the role of executive principal at Lara Secondary College.

“It was quite a bit of a shock to staff, actually,” he said. In a farewell function held on Friday, Mr Terrill thanked his teaching staff over the years and said he had been particularly proud to see the school’s VCE and Naplan results improve. Last year, the school was ranked fifth most-improved Victorian school in VCE median study scores in the past five years, according to the Good Schools Guide. Mr Terrill attributed the improvement to running specific VCE subject tutoring programs and a school improvement policy in which students in years 7 to 10 could re-sit an assessment task if they were unhappy with their performance. “In life, when kids go for their licence and they fail, they’re asked to come back and work on the things they didn’t do well,” Mr Terrill said. “It’s the same with learning. Assistant principal Keith Halge has stepped in as interim principal at Hoppers Crossing for term two. A new principal is expected to begin in term three.
A Werribee aged-care facility has been assessed as safe to live in despite a statewide cladding audit finding expanded polystyrene cladding in the building. The Heaths Road facility was assessed by the state government, Wyndham council and the CFA as part of last month’s audit. A statement issued by the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) said the assessment discovered expanded polystyrene cladding in the building. “As a result, Wyndham council’s municipal building surveyor ordered urgent building works,” the statement said. The aged-care facility has started the work and is also working with the VBA to inform residents and their families of the situation. A VBA spokesman said that a team of independent fire safety and building experts has determined the aged-care facility “… remains safe to occupy, but will be subject to strict conditions to ensure the highest safety standards for residents”. “The safety of residents and staff is our number one priority,” the spokesman said. “Urgent building works will be carried out in the interim, and sections of cladding will need to be replaced after that.” Alesha Capone

Cash boost for motocross track By Charlene Macaulay A $1.6 million cash splash will breathe new life into the disused Lawrie Emmins motocross track. Wyndham council’s draft 2018-19 budget has pledged to rebuild both the junior and senior tracks at the Laverton North facility, which will be compliant with Motorcycling Victoria’s safety regulations and guidelines. It is believed the industry body will manage the track once it reopens.
Wyndham mayor and sports development portfolio holder Peter Maynard said the redevelopment would also involve improving surrounding on-site facilities, including toilets and the carpark. Cr Maynard has led a community reference group, which also included Sergeant Aaron Prentice-Evans from the Westgate Highway Patrol and community representatives Les Cameron and Brett Ison, since late last year to help get the long-awaited redevelopment off the ground.

The project has had its fair share of delays. In January 2016, Wyndham council approved a planning permit to reuse the existing track, which was shut down in 2010. Cr Maynard said he was excited to see funding for the track. “The community has
been waiting a long time for this project and we’re getting on with the job of making it happen,” Cr Maynard said. “If everything goes to plan, construction is set to kick off late this year.” The redevelopment is one of a number of sporting upgrades expected to be delivered in the next financial year, with $3.6 million allocated for a new sports pavilion, carpark and sporting fields at Werribee’s Galvin Park, and $7.2 million for a sports field and netball pavilion at Mossfiel Reserve.
Sport program kicks off Two after-school sports programs are helping to keep students on the ball and out of trouble. Tarneit Senior College has joined forces with Melbourne City and Melbourne Storm to offer afternoon soccer and rugby programs respectively, attracting up to 40 students across all year levels on any given week. Assistant principal Suzie Gerada said the school introduced the sporting programs at the beginning of the school year because a lot of students couldn’t afford to be part of sporting clubs, which can incur high registration, uniform and equipment fees. In comparison, the soccer and rugby programs are fully funded through the school. Each program includes a range of training drills, followed by a mini-game. The students will go on to represent Tarneit Senior College at inter-school sports competitions. Ms Gerada said while the programs were open to all Tarneit Senior College students, the soccer program was particularly popular
among its African students, while students from the Islander community had gravitated towards the rugby program. She said the programs were getting students involved in something positive in the community outside of school hours. “It’s great – the boys love it.” Ms Gerada is hoping the programs grow once a long-awaited school expansion – which will include a sporting precinct with a new gym and basketball stadium – is complete later this year. Solid growth for Tarneit housing By Alesha Capone The median house price in Tarneit has grown by 10.2 per cent since last year, according to the Real Estate Institute of Victoria. The REIV last week released a list of the state’s top growth suburbs for median house prices, within the January to March quarter of this year. In the October to December quarter of 2017, Tarneit’s median house price was $532,500, but it reached $587,000 by March this year. This figure put Tarneit at ninth on the list for
median house price growth in the state. Kew topped the list, with house prices increasing 26.9 per cent from $2.710 million last year to $2.715 million this year. The median house price across Melbourne was recorded at $855,000 in the March quarter. In February, Melbourne-based developer Growland announced plans to build a 900-home estate in Tarneit aimed at first-home buyers. The ‘Marigold’ estate will be on a 65-hectare site near the intersection of Derrimut and Dohertys roads. The project has been described as “premium

affordable housing targeted towards first-home buyers”, to be built alongside recreational parks, water features and wetlands. Growland chief executive Ronald Chan said the company hoped the Marigold area would appeal to first-home buyers who wanted to avoid paying stamp duty.
In Victoria, first-home buyers are not required to pay stamp duty if they buy a property for $600,000 or less. “Our aim is for our purchasers to end up paying $600,000 and under for their house and land package,” Mr Chan said. Mr Chan said that Tarneit “represents a fantastic opportunity for buyers”. “Many buyers in Tarneit are coming from Sydney and Western Sydney due to Melbourne’s relative affordability and lifestyle, which is a trend we believe will continue as Sydney land prices remain out of reach for many,” he said.
Taking a shot at sport It’s the basketball team giving special needs kids some much-needed time on the court. The Werribee All-Abilities Basketball Club started out with six members four years ago and has quickly grown to include 40 players between the ages of five and 28, who compete in all-abilities tournaments across Melbourne. Werribee’s Kylie Bozanic got the ball rolling because she wanted her son Kyle, who was born with quadriplegia dystonia, to get involved in sport. Ms Bozanic, who is club secretary and a coach, said the players were grouped into teams according to their abilities, and took part in basketball drills and training on Tuesday nights at Eagle Stadium. “All the players love to come to play basketball, get fit and be active. It helps with their social skills,” she said. The club was able to buy new uniforms and equipment recently thanks to a $2500 grant
from the Werribee Bendigo Bank branch. Salva Minniti from the Bendigo Bank said she was passionate about helping kids in the community. The club is open to anyone with physical or intellectual disabilities, or chromosomal disorders. New players are welcome. Record spend to get city moving By Charlene Macaulay More detail has emerged about Wyndham council’s proposed $37.1 million road spend over the coming financial year. The record funding allocation, which is detailed in the council’s draft 2018-19 budget, includes money for three major road projects across the city: the duplication of Forsyth Road between Old Geelong Road and Sayers Road, construction of Ison Road between the Princes Freeway and Melbourne-Geelong rail line, and the duplication of Tarneit Road between Sayers and Leakes roads.
Wyndham council’s acting director of city economy Peter McKinnon said the Ison Road funding was part of a $40 million program to fast-track construction of the Armstrong-Ison Road link from Black Forest Road to the Princes Freeway. Once complete, the project will give Wyndham Vale and Manor Lakes residents direct access to the Princes Freeway without having to pass through Werribee’s CBD. Works on the package is slated for completion in 2019. “The overall project also includes the construction of Armstrong Road from Black Forest Road to Bulban Road, and Armstrong
Road up to Greens Road – construction of which is under way,” Mr McKinnon said. Meanwhile, detailed designs for the Tarneit road duplication are under way, with construction to begin in either late 2018 or early 2019. Designs for the Forsyth Road duplication are close to completion and tenders are expected to be undertaken this month. The council also plans to splash out $16 million in land acquisitions as part of the roads funding package, but would not disclose what land they’re looking to buy. “It is not uncommon for council to allocate funding towards land acquisitions
to accommodate for future community infrastructure, including the widening of roads. Further details on specific acquisitions will be available as we progress with various projects,” Mr McKinnon said. The funding will also go towards road surfacings, traffic light installations – including at Dunnings Road and Lennon Boulevard, and Boardwalk and Mile Franklin Boulevard – and intersection safety improvement works. The draft budget is now out for public viewing at the council civic centre, Wyndham’s libraries, a number of community centres, and online at www.wyndham.vic.gov.au

Express call for Tarneit West By Alesha Capone A Wyndham councillor is calling on the state government to fast-track funding to build the proposed David Road train station in Tarneit West. Cr Josh Gilligan said the station – scheduled to be built about 2022-27 – was needed now. Under the state government’s Network Development Plan, the Davis Road station is one of five new stations proposed for the Regional Rail Link in Wyndham within the next 10 to 15 years.
Cr Gilligan said Tarneit’s population growth meant the area required a new train station as soon as possible, rather than in a decade. “Construction of Davis Road station and the electrification of the line from Wyndham Vale to Southern Cross is desperately needed to alleviate the huge demand on Tarneit station, which is now the second busiest train station in Victoria behind Southern Cross,” Cr Gilligan said. According to the latest figures from V/Line, in the March quarter of this year most

Geelong-to-Melbourne weekday train services that run before 8am were full by the time they reached Tarneit or Wyndham Vale stations. Another service, the 6.44am from Marshall, reached 99 per cent capacity by the time it reached Wyndham Vale station.
The 5.45am from Marshall reached 93 per cent capacity by the time it arrived at Tarneit. “As a regular Tarneit station commuter, it isn’t surprising to find that 13 of the 16 morning Geelong line services are full by the time they reach Wyndham Vale or Tarneit stations,” Cr Gilligan said. An online petition at change.org, called Tarneit West Needs a Train Station, has been signed by 249 people. The state government was contacted for comment.

Bourne said Orbison and Cash were superstars and friends. “They were friends from the mid-’50s and right up until Roy passed away in 1988,” he said. “They had so many great songs between them and it’s a really great story to be told.” Bourne, who has been a Roy Orbison performer for the past 21 years, said he was spellbound by the performer when he first heard the song Crying as a child. “I can still remember it – it was the voice first
and foremost … it was so beautiful,” he said. “I’ve sung that song thousands of times over the years and every time I sing it, it’s just like the very first time. It’s a very powerful song. “I would sing Roy Orbison songs as a teenager and people would say, ‘You sound so much like Roy Orbison’ … that’s kind of how I fell into doing it.” Bourne has travelled the world performing Roy Orbison tribute shows and recently completed a sell-out tour in Ireland. Longtime pals glad to give By Charlene Macaulay This double act is well practised in the art of service with a smile. Werribee’s Margo Kendall and Dawn Evans have spent a combined 80 years as volunteers with Wyndham council’s Meals on Wheels program, with Mrs Kendall notching up 45 years of volunteering this year and Mrs Evans 35 years. The pair spend one Friday each month driving around together to deliver meals to elderly residents who continue to live independently at home. Mrs Kendall, 81, first signed up when she saw an ad in the local paper. She was joined by Mrs Evans, 78, about a decade later. The two women, who were friends long before they joined forces as volunteers, have also spent more than 30 years with the Baptcare Wyndham Lodge ladies auxiliary, helping to raise more than $330,000 in that time. Mrs Kendall described their volunteering as “a privilege”. “It’s allowed me to grow … you learn a lot about yourself,” she said. Mrs Evans added: “Margot motivates me. She says, ‘Would you like to …’, and I join up. I get a lot of satisfaction from it.” The friends are among a host of volunteers who will be celebrated at a morning tea later this month to mark National Volunteer Week. Wyndham council family friendly city portfolio holder Mia Shaw said about 15 per cent of Wyndham residents were currently volunteering. “It always amazes me how many people give up their time and energy to selflessly help others and make Wyndham a better place for us all to live,” Cr Shaw said.

Premier too busy to meet committee The Committee for Wyndham has expressed disappointment after Premier Daniel Andrews declined an invitation to meet them before this year’s state election. The committee last week issued a statement which said they were disappointed Mr Andrews had turned down the invitation, due to his existing commitments before the November 24 election. The committee’s chairman Peter Mayall said they had offered to host a lunch with the premier so he could meet business and community leaders from Wyndham. “We want Wyndham to be acknowledged at the highest level,” Mr Mayall said. “Wyndham has overtaken Geelong in population size and continues to be the fastest growing region in Australia.” The committee has also invited Opposition Leader Matthew Guy to meet with them before the election, but is yet to hear back. The Committee for Wyndham is a membership-based association which brings together business and community organisations to advocate for Wyndham. Growing Wyndham’s $768m call By Charlene Macaulay A mammoth $768 million of new infrastructure is needed in the next 27 years to accommodate Wyndham’s surging population – that’s the call being made by the city’s council. Mayor Peter Maynard says the city will need eight new children’s centres, 11 new community centres (including two libraries and a performing arts centre), 33 new sports fields and four new indoor recreation centres in the next three decades.
“At the same time, we need to ensure that our ageing infrastructure in our established suburbs is maintained and renewed to ensure that people in those suburbs have access to excellent facilities,” Cr Maynard said. “It is estimated that the total new community infrastructure requirement to be provided by council is $768 million over 27 years. “This infrastructure expense cannot be undertaken by us alone and will require other funding partners and grant contributions.” In February, Wyndham’s population
officially outstripped that of Geelong for the first time, making it the second-largest city in the state behind the City of Casey. The growth shows no signs of slowing. By 2028, Wyndham’s population is tipped to reach 332,857 people and by 2036 more than 435,000 people are expected to call Wyndham home. Cr Maynard welcomed the state government’s decision to pour another $50 million into its growing suburbs fund for the 2018-19 financial year, which will go towards key infrastructure projects across Victoria’s growth areas.
Wyndham, one of 10 councils to benefit from the growing suburbs fund, has received about $14 million since it was established in 2015 to support the Chirnside Park redevelopment, Mossfiel Reserve upgrades, Wyndham Park redevelopment and other projects. Treasurer and Werribee MP Tim Pallas said the new money would “help build everything from new sports pavilions to community parklands – ensuring locals have more of the facilities and services they need closer to home”.
Never too old to learn Students at the Point Cook U3A prove that learning can be fun at any age. The U3A – also known as the University of the Third Age – is a worldwide network of self-help groups, aimed at people who are retired or semi-retired and who have an interest in education. This year, the Point Cook U3A opened to students for the first time, with the motto “You’re never too old to learn.” The first term’s courses have finished and term two is now under way with a group of volunteers running courses in French, art, numbers, bridge and craft at the Jamieson Way and Saltwater Community Centres in Point Cook. The U3A also has a book club, which meets at the Featherbrook Community Centre. The Point Cook U3A group is guided and supervised by the U3A Werribee, but hopes to run its own organisation within the next year or two.

Anzac motorcycle anger A retired army officer says he was “disgusted” by motorbike riders who disturbed the peace at last Wednesday’s Anzac Day dawn service in Werribee. As thousands gathered at the cenotaph to pay their respects, dozens of motorbikes rode down Watton Street just before the service began. “I was appalled at the behaviour of the motorcycle club that arrived noisily just before the service,” the former officer told Star Weekly. “They were given special privilege to park within the cordoned off area.” Each of the 50-plus bikes rode down Watton

Street revving their engines and then proceeded to reverse park into the curb near where the public had assembled, he said. “They kept their engines running until the last motorbike had parked, emitting exhaust fumes on to the footpath as people were walking to the service. “Then, on cue from the lead rider, all of the motorbikes revved their engines for a further five seconds before turning them off. “As a veteran I was disgusted that event organisers had permitted such behaviour that bore no significance at all to Anzac Day and not only shattered the tranquility of the dawn, but showed an extreme level of disrespect to our fallen soldiers and had taken away the solemnity of the Anzac Day dawn service.” Meanwhile, Werribee RSL president Daryl Ryan said he estimated there were between 6000 to 7000 people at the Watton Street event.
During his speech at the service, Mr Ryan spoke of the importance of remembering all Australian men and women who had died during conflicts – including prisoners of war. Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard said that those who had lost their lives during wars “died
for Australia”. “I thought the service today was amazing,” he said. “It always is. “It’s not about celebrating war – it’s commemorating the sacrifices people made and their families. It makes you proud to be an Aussie.”

Among the crowds who gathered for the Anzac Day commemoration in Werribee last Wednesday was 91-year-old World War II veteran Paul Lapira. Mr Lapira, who lives in Point Cook with one of his daughters, was born in Malta. He enlisted in the Maltese Army at the age of 15. “The Germans, they didn’t stop bombing Malta,” he said. Mr Lapira became a policeman in Malta after the war and later moved to Australia with his wife Carmen. The couple were married for 65 years, and lived on the Gold Coast for decades, before Mrs Lapira passed away. Mr Lapira, a member of the Nerang RSL
Sub-branch, said he had attended an Anzac Day service every year, carrying both the Australian and Maltese flags. This year, he woke up at 3.30am to get ready for the Werribee Anzac Day service. “God bless Australia and Malta,” he said. “Malta is my homeland, Australia adopted me.” Mr Lapira, who has seven greatgrandchildren, proudly wore his war service medals at the Anzac Day service. MY WYNDHAM Ian Patrick has spent his married life between Werribee and Darwin, last settling down here in 1984 for good. Now retired, he spends his days painting, fishing and watching cricket. He chats with Charlene Macaulay. What’s your connection to Wyndham? We built that house across the road in 1973. We’d been living in Darwin and we came home just before the cyclone (Tracy). Coral’s family were from Werribee. Then I sold that in 1982, went back to Darwin, and then come back here in 1984 and built this place. Then I started a plumbing business here. I can remember we used to have stickers we’d put on our cars that would say: “Werribee: the country suburb.” That’s what it was like. How did you and Coral meet?
Coral: I’m the cougar – I’m six years older! You can’t tell, though. We have three kids, seven grandkids. What are your hobbies? I’m a painter. I do it for therapy. I exhibit at the veteran’s art show every year at Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital. I’ve exhibited at a mental health place in Richmond. I’m a life member of the Werribee Cricket Club, I played cricket

I was in the navy, and I’d just come back from Vietnam … and I used to go back to the barracks with my brother, on the grog, and we’d have parties and stuff like that. We used to ring up the nurses from Fairfield Hospital and get them to come over by bus and go to the dances. That’s how we met – at one of the dances. I was the only navy guy amongst all the army guys there and she was a nurse … she swept me off my feet. [We’ve been] married 49 years this year.

Werribee Shire Council decided on Monday night to support the retention of the commissioner representation on the Board of Works. The report of an inquiry into the operation of the Board of Works recently recommended the abolition of the appointment of commissioners from all member municipalities.
Forty years of clanking buckets and the mournful lowing of dairy cattle in Werribee South became an echo of the past when 80 Friesian cows were sold and herded into semi-trailers last Thursday afternoon. The lumbering black and white beasts ambled down the track of the Berias family’s dairy farm at Duncans Rd last week heralding the end of an era in Werribee South’s private dairy industry.
Anti-toxic dump protestors have released a report urging the Government to set up a task force to deal with the State’s prescribed waste problems. Werribee Residents Against Toxic Dump (WRATD) wants the Government to examine the report, which was released last week, before it makes a final decision on whether a dump will go ahead.
A Southbank-style precinct adding a boardwalk and restaurants with Werribee River frontage forms the heart of a project to revitalise the city’s CBD. The project, to be overseen by Wyndham Council’s newly appointed place manager Craig Toussaint, includes a facelift of the Hoppers Crossing town centre, along with a renewed drive to boost investment at the Werribee Technology Precinct.

They will help you lay the vital foundations that will benefit your child or children long term. The program runs for 10 sessions (over 10 weeks). Ideally participants start when pregnant or alternatively when they have a baby under 12 months. It is initially being rolled out in the Western and Northern suburbs of Melbourne.
“If people are co-parenting with their friend, ex-partner or grandparents, that’s fine, too. The focus is on co-operation and placing baby at the centre of things.”
Called Family Foundations, it is the result of a collaboration between Merri Health, Drummond Street Services and the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute. Co-ordinator Kate Galea says the program caters for families with babies up to 12 months old. “The program is unique in that it is informal and run in the couple’s home, usually with five sessions of parent coaching before baby is born and five after,” she says. 12385527-EPJ18-18

She says the clinics, which offer 24/7 healthcare, have many skilled male and female doctors, several with particular interests. “We have, for example, Dr Hudaifa Obaidi, a cosmetic surgeon consulting at Truganina, who administers antiwrinkle injections and dermal fillers – just to name a few areas of his expertise,” Donna says. “We encourage people needing these types of services to have them done
in our accredited centre, under the care of a specialist and nurse. This provides peace of mind and doesn’t put patient health at risk. “Dr Sa’ad Albarki, who consults at both centres, has a special interest in minor surgery for needs such as circumcision, punch biopsy, lesions and lumps. “People can receive a full body check of dark spots – this is so important for peace of mind before spots can turn into sun cancer. “Suspect lesions can be removed, with a sample sent to our on-site lab to determine if treatment is needed.” One female doctor consults at Werribee and another at Truganina. Also on board are four male GPs, a geriatrician, a cardiologist and a cardiac scientist. Dr Albarki says the clinic’s doctors provide nursing home services, including those of geriatrician Dr Alfie Obieta, with services offered including cognitive assessment, dementia and dementia-related behaviour management, pain management, wound management, advance care planning, end of life/palliation and complex chronic medical condition treatment. “We provide 24/7 care for our patients,” he says. “After-hours locum doctors are happy to do home consultations, bulk-billing of, course – because we care.”

Jack Henderson’s four-week stint as 23rd player for Werribee was both fruitful and eye opening. The 18-year-old showed he has a bright future at Victorian Football League level with some impressive performances, but he also got to know more about his own game and what it takes to mix it with elite players in the competition. Henderson saved his best game for last in the four-week block of matches, claiming best-on for his side in Saturday’s 38-point loss to Richmond at Avalon Airport Oval. He will now return to the regular list while another rookie gets his shot at being the 23rd player for Werribee. His strong form could see him retain his spot in the side as a starting 22 player, but that is to be determined at match selection. Irrespective of whether Henderson is back in the black and gold of Werribee next round or returning to St Mary’s in the Geelong Football League, he is undoubtedly better for the experience of being the club’s first 23rd player of the season. “I guess I’m just open for selection now, otherwise, I’ll just go back to playing at St Mary’s,” he said. “I’ll play it by ear, whatever happens, happens. “I’ve loved every minute of it, it’s been an awesome experience. “It’s a big step up from under-18s footy and I’d love to play as much as I can.” Henderson was thrown into the deep end to see if he could swim amongst the big names in the VFL. First-up, he marked Geelong Cats rookie

It was a dead rubber game for the Tigers with VFL finals out of the equation, but it was also billed as one of the biggest days in the club’s history – the last game at the Watton Street ground in its current format before it is transformed into a state-of-the-art venue to serve coming generations. Schultz got off the leash a couple of times, but Henderson learnt from that experience. Bolton, however, was kept goalless and restricted to just eight touches in a stellar defensive performance that earned Henderson best-on-ground honours. “I’ve learnt a hell of a lot in my four games,” Henderson, originally from Blighty in country New South Wales, said. “Sam Collins and all the defenders, even the midfielders and the forwards, they’ve all been great resources for me, not just in the games, but also at training and off the field as well.” Henderson got his start in the juniors at the Deniliquin Rams. He moved to Melbourne to board at Geelong College and now lives in Geelong West. Henderson has vowed to continue working on his deficiencies and stake his claim for a regular senior berth. “I want to keep learning from all the defenders and become a better all-round footballer,” he said.
Werribee produced what it had yearned for most of the season – a consistent four-quarter performance. The Tigers answered numerous challenges from the Zebras, leading at every change and claiming a seventh win for the season. Key forward Josh Porter and midfielder Joe Maishman saved their best until last. “They probably had their best games of the year,” Lamont said. “They were real stand-outs for us, those two boys.” Porter was the focal point for Werribee’s attack. He kicked two goals and was the conduit between midfield and goal. Maishman’s explosiveness through the middle of the ground had the eyes of the forwards lighting up. has taken 50 years, but finally Mexico Olympic silver medallist Peter Norman has received the recognition he deserves. Sadly, it is 12 years after his passing, but for his family, a lasting legacy of Peter’s part in a defining moment in sports history. Last weekend, he was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit by the Australian Olympic Committee, the highest award possible for an Olympic athlete. His 200-metre silver time in Mexico stands some 50 years later as an Australian record. The race is remembered, though, for the social and political significance of the men who were with Peter on the podium, Americans Tommie Smith (gold) and John Carlos (bronze), and their raising of gloved fists to signify “Black Power”, a silent protest that made headlines around the world. Peter was a familiar face around the sports traps in the west before his passing in 2006. It is pleasing to see a champion has been honoured.

By Lance Jenkinson Truganina is aiming to complete a Geelong trifecta when it travels to play Bell Park in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 4 west at the Bell Park Sports Club on Saturday. The Hornets have already ventured down the Princes highway twice this season for thumping wins over Golden Plains and Surf Coast – both games in which they scored five goals – and now it has Bell Park in its sights. It will be a much tougher assignment for the Hornets against a Bell Park team that is heavily tipped to challenge for promotion this season. “We’ve done it to the other Geelong teams and they’re the third one on the list,” Hornets coach Sergio Lunedei said. “They’re one of the teams that are up there, one of the teams predicted to win the league, but we’ve got the quality to go there and win the game. “We’ll play our style, our philosophy of football and see what happens.” Truganina has enjoyed a hot start to the
season. Its blistering FFA Cup form has carried into the league season, where it sits on top on goal difference over Western Eagles. The Hornets dropped points for the first time in a 1-1 draw with Altona North at Arndell Park Reserve on Saturday evening. Still, it was valuable point, considering the quality of the opposition and the fact they had to play most of the second half with 10 men after captain Federico Rossini was given a red card. Truganina trailed by a goal after 15 minutes. Tony Saric found a way through the Hornets usually water tight defence, one that has only conceded three goals in five games, to give Altona North the lead. Truganina restored parity about 10 minutes later through Abdullahi Salad. Salad showed his class, getting in behind the Altona North defence and coolly slotting the ball into the back of the net. Rossini had a golden opportunity to give Truganina the lead before he was sent off, but missed what Lunedei described as “a sitter”.
In state league 1, Hoppers Crossing broke down defensively, going down 5-3 to Banyule City at Yallambie Park Reserve. The Reds actually led the game three times after a double to Simon Tolli and a goal to Kwaku Dade, but could not hold on at any stage. The Reds will host rivals Altona City at Grange Reserve on Saturday. In state league 3, Point Cook played out a 1-1 draw with Essendon United on the road at JH Allan Reserve. Jason Moody got on the score sheet for the visiting Jets. In state league 5, Peter D’Arcy scored in West Point’s 1-1 draw with Barwon. In women’s state league 2, Hoppers Crossing had a resounding 3-0 win over Moreland Zebras to keep its undefeated start alive. In women’s state league 3, Point Cook had a day it would rather forget, losing 7-0 to Spring Hills at Saltwater Reserve, while West Point had an 8-3 defeat to Westgate in women’s state league 4.

Hornets create a buzz
early days in the local footy, but it is surprising to see last year’s grand finalists Sunshine and Deer Park in the bottom half of the division 1 ladder with one win each. Flags are not won in April, so anyone reading anything into the slow starts is kidding themselves. Parkside is finding life up a division a bit more solid than it found last year. Point Cook has made a sensational start to its life in the WRFL, unbeaten so far in division 2. Well done to Ian Denny and everyone at the club.

McIntosh kicks herself into the WRFL record books

Manor Lakes full-forward Kellee McIntosh is already way out in front on the WRFL Women’s goalkickers list after two rounds. With 22 goals to her name, McIntosh has more than doubled the tally of the next best player, and it was underpinned by quite a remarkable opening round display. McIntosh unbelievably kicked 18 goals in a single game against North Sunshine – a feat only once achieved in the history of the AFL and only rarely occurs in local football. The biggest haul in the two-year AFL women’s competition is seven goals in a game, scored by Western Bulldogs premiership forward Brooke Lochland this season. “It was a shock to myself, it was pretty flukey,” she said. “At training last week, my teammates were still going on about it. “As soon as the game finished, I was like, let’s move on and worry about the week coming.” Even more incredible is that McIntosh kicked her 18 goals from just 19 shots. She finished
with 18.1 for the game and her only blemish came from a set shot in the last quarter. McIntosh had most of her set shots from about the 30-metre range, kicked some on the run and had her teammates dish off a few – it was the perfect forward’s game. The 23-year-old was thankful to her teammates for their pinpoint delivery. “The way my teammates were kicking it into the forward line, they were setting it up perfectly,” she said. “I was in the right spot at the right time, every time. “It was mainly on the lead, but if it hit the ground I was getting it and my teammates were passing it off.” McIntosh kicked 10 goals in the first half and eight in the second. She returned to the field after half-time to find herself double teamed. “It was a lot harder in the second half, for sure,” she said. Manor Lakes is a perfect two from two to start the inaugural WRFL Women’s season.
Warriors find way to win
The Storm backed up its 240-point shellacking of North Sunshine with a 64-point win over Spotswood in round two. McIntosh finished with four goals, while Cara Dunshea kicked three. McIntosh is delighted to be able to play in a WRFL only competition after playing in an amalgamated league with the Essendon District Football League last season. “It’s better because we don’t have to travel as far,” the Hoppers Crossing resident said. “It’s good to play teams around our area.” In other games, Werribee Centrals made its first appearance after having a bye in round one and started with a 68-point win over North Sunshine at Galvin Park. By Lance Jenkinson Hoppers Crossing is rejuvenating on the fly, yet the horror run of injuries and departures in the off season have so far been adequately covered. Instead of wallowing in self pity, the Warriors have got on with the job with the available players, putting together an impressive start to the Western Region Football League division 1 season. The Warriors improved to 2-1 after a crushing 49-point win over Caroline Springs away at Town Centre Oval on Saturday. Warriors coach Steven Kretiuk said a disrupted pre-season had come with a silver lining – the chance to blood some enthusiastic youngsters. “It’s a totally different feel to what we’ve had,” he said. “It’s a lot younger, a lot fresher. “We had a lot of players leave and now we’ve got a lot of guys that just want to play footy. “Sometimes you need to inject younger players into the team to rejuvenate your list.” Hoppers Crossing is far from the finished article. Even within the four quarters of the Caroline Springs victory, Kretiuk could see that his team was making giant strides and learning on the run. The Warriors led by 18 points at half-time, but not as convincingly as could have been. They were continuously breaking down on the back of their forward 50 entries and needed to find alternative routes to goal. “In the first two quarters, we gave them a lot of opportunities to rebound,” Kretiuk said. “As the game progressed, we learnt from it, we adjusted, which was pleasing, especially in the last quarter – we started moving the footy and getting some good momentum.” Hoppers Crossing played a lot through key forward Jackson Viola. Kretiuk is full of praise for Viola, who gets the No.1 defender every week and battles his heart out for the Warriors. “He’s pretty much playing one-out as a tall,” Kretiuk said. “All year he’s worked tirelessly as our key forward. “He doesn’t get a lot of the accolades that he should because he’s not getting his name on the score sheet a lot. “What he does is create a lot of contests for us, works hard and creates really good positive movement for us forward” With the Caroline Springs defence preoccupied with Viola’s movement, other Hoppers Crossing forwards prospered. Jordan Mead was down on his usual output, kicking just one goal compared to his 10 against the same side last year, but the Warriors got a nice spread of contributors on the scoreboard, including three goals apiece to Jordan Cook and Ashlin Brown and two to Nathan Williams. Werribee had a narrow 2-1 home loss to MHSOB in the Hockey Victoria men’s Vic League 2. Captain Sam Huxtable found the back of the net for the Tigers, but it was to no avail as his side slumped to its second loss in three games. Werribee will hit the road to face Croydon Rangers in the fourth round. In women’s Vic League 1, Werribee squeezed out a 1-0 win over WestVic at the Werribee Hockey Centre. Caitlin Spence scored for the Tigers, who are 2-1 after three rounds. The Tigers will travel to play the winless Monash University on Saturday.
Netball
Werribee Centrals bounced back strongly following a rare loss with a 58-21 drubbing of Geelong West in the GDFL A-grade at Galvin Park on Saturday. Ellie Tubbs scored 30 goals to lead the Centrals to a commanding victory. Standout players for Centrals were Amanda O’Malley, Melissa Prismall and Natasha Dimkovski. Centrals will travel to Anakie this Saturday.

The Tigers, led by four goals from forward Andrew Panayi, set up their victory with a 10-goal-to-three first half. The top-of-the-ladder Tigers will host Caroline Springs on Saturday. At the other end of the standings, Wyndhamvale slumped to 0-3 following a disappointing 53-point loss to Albion. Big-name
recruit Reuben William was a shining light for the Falcons with four goals. In division 2, Point Cook flexed its muscles in a 79-point hammering of Albanvale. Manor Lakes went down to Newport Power by three points in a thriller. In division 3, Point Cook Centrals overcame Tarneit by three goals. Wyndham Suns had a runaway 55-point win over Sunshine Heights. Glen Orden remains the only winless side in the division after going down to North Sunshine by 29 points.
Westbourne Grammarians endured a tough day at the office in Victorian Amateur Football Association division 3. The Warriors were soundly beaten by Glen Eira to the tune of 51 points at Packer Reserve on Saturday. Ali Eqbal was the Warriors’ only multiple goalkicker with three, while Paul Hudson was named the side’s best. In division 3 women, Westbourne failed to trouble the scorers in a 103-point loss to MCC.
