Lord mayor bid quashed Wyndham councillor Intaj Khan will ask for a review of the Local Government Act after his hopes to stand for Melbourne’s lord mayor were quashed. Cr Khan (pictured) announced his intention to run for Melbourne lord mayor last week but when nominations for the May by-election closed yesterday, he was not among the candidates. Cr Khan said that in the end, he was unable to stand in the by-election because the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) failed to respond
to his lawyers in time. Cr Khan had asked the VEC to clarify whether a councillor in a municipality other than Melbourne could run for the lord mayor’s role. The Local Government Act prohibits a sitting councillor elsewhere to nominate for the position. It also does not allow for any one person to serve on two councils at the same time. “We’ll be writing to the minister [for local government Marlene Kairouz] to ask for a review of the law and say that it needs to be
clearer,” Cr Khan said. “It is unfair. Why can other councillors not run, if Melbourne councillors can?” Cr Khan said if the act was changed he would consider standing for the lord mayor’s position in the future. If he had stood in the Melbourne by-election and won, Cr Khan said he would have resigned from the Wyndham council. “I’m very much a fair person – I like to follow governance,” he said. Cr Khan, who was re-elected to the Harrison ward in 2016, took a leave of absence from the (Damjan Janevski)

Yesterday he said he would consider whether to cut short his leave. “It’s a pleasure to serve Wyndham city council ratepayers and businesses, I will continue to serve to the best of my ability,” he said. Cr Khan still faces eight charges over allegations of not declaring commercial interests while serving as a Wyndham councillor between February 2016 and February 2017. The case is due to be heard in Sunshine Magistrates’ Court in June.

Call to change cultural precinct By Alesha Capone Wyndham council has received a petition calling for the municipality’s proposed Indian Cultural Precinct to be located in Tarneit, rather than Wyndham Vale. The petition, signed by 191 people and received at last week’s council meeting, states the Indian Cultural Precinct should be built at the Wyndham Village Shopping Centre in Tarneit, as opposed to President’s Park in Wyndham Vale. It states that out of all Wyndham residents
who identify as Indian, the majority live in Tarneit. In December last year, the council issued a feasibility report that identified President’s Park as the preferred location for the precinct, in the form of a multicultural sculpture and performing arts park. The December report came two years after the state government allocated $50,000 for the council to conduct a feasibility study into an Indian precinct and $500,000 for its construction. According to the 2016 census, 7548 Tarneit
residents identify as being from an Indian background and 3145 were born in India. In comparison, 2367 Wyndham Vale residents identified as Indian and 994 said they were born in India. The petition states many Indian community traders had businesses based in Tarneit and the Wyndham Village Shopping Centre, and described the area as a “classic reflection of Indian culture and tradition”. Wyndham councillors last week voted to note the petition and advise the lead petitioner they had done so.
The meeting agenda said the council had sent its report into the potential location of the Indian precinct to the Minister for Multicultural Affairs in December. “At the time of writing this report, council has not received a response from the minister about his intentions for a potential Indian Cultural Precinct in Wyndham,” the agenda stated. “As this is a state government initiative, council cannot make a further determination about next steps.” The state government was contacted for comment.

Program punching above its weight A grassroots boxing and mentoring program in Werribee is helping to engage young people with the community. The Wyndham Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC) started in January this year. The club is supported by the YSAS Youth Support and Advocacy Service, Victoria Police and Australian Trade Training and Assessment (ATTA). He said it was sometimes difficult for the club to supply the gear they needed to participate in boxing, such as mouth guards. They train at a Werribee gym from 4pm to 6pm, Monday to Friday. “The attitude and respect from the kids is fantastic,” Mr Williams said. “We’ve just been noticing an improvement in the young people’s general wellbeing, confidence, school attendance and attitudes, and it’s also great seeing the family involvement when they come down to support the kids.” Once a month, the PCYC holds an intra-club night where they compete against other clubs.
Police are appealing for assistance to identify two men following a sexual assault in Wyndham Vale last week. The incident occurred on a walking track in a reserve near Honour Avenue on Tuesday, March 27, at 1.30pm. The victim, a 32-year-old Wyndham Vale woman, was approached by two men. One of the men attempted to sexually assault her, but she managed to fend him off. Both men ran off towards Ribblesdale Avenue. Police released computer-generated likenesses of the men and are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. In a separate investigation, Victoria Police and the Australian Federal Police executed warrants at 20 properties last month as part of a statewide operation targeting people who access child-abuse material on the internet. Twenty people were arrested as a result of the warrants, which were executed in areas including Sunshine North, Truganina and Werribee. Those arrested included a 44-year-old Sunshine North man, a 49-year-old Truganina man and a 37-year-old Werribee man.

Council ups training entitlements By Alesha Capone Wyndham councillors will be able to undertake up to $10,000 of professional development training each, under an updated policy. A revised version of Wyndham’s 2014 councillor expenses and entitlements policy was unanimously adopted at last week’s council meeting. As part of the amended policy, councillors will be able to claim a “training allocation� of $10,000 during their four-year terms, an
increase from $7500 in the previous policy. A report stated that raising the training allowance would recognise that the Australian Institute of Company Directors course, or an equivalent course (which councillors are encouraged to do), costs about $7800. The policy said the funding limit for councillors’ “discretionary professional development� could exceed the $10,000 limit if the training was deemed “appropriate� and approved by the mayor or the council’s chief executive. Cr Intaj Khan said training undertaken by
councillors related to their “governance and planning duties�. “Nowadays the courses are quite expensive,� he said. “I’m glad to see we are reviewing policy, it’s pretty straightforward, but it’s good to see emphasis on training.� The updated policy also stated that the council would pay for (or reimburse) the cost of a councillor’s spouse or partner to attend an event, when a councillor was invited to attend in their official capacity, and where representation by a councillor was required.
The policy stated that the council would cover the expense of a spouse or partner’s registration fees and “reasonable costs� for their meals and refreshments. In addition, the updated policy gives Wyndham’s mayor the option of using their own vehicle to carry out their duties, in lieu of a council supplied vehicle. Councillors will be also be encouraged to car pool and take public transport when attending to official duties outside of Wyndham and be permitted to catch Ubers instead of taxis.
Brigades burn it up Volunteers and members of Wyndham’s CFA brigades have put in a fantastic effort to raise more than $137,000 for the Good Friday Appeal. In total, the Werribee, Wyndham Vale, Hoppers Crossing, Point Cook and Truganina fire brigades raised a combined $137,397.17 for this year’s appeal. Across the state, the appeal raised more than $18 million for the Royal Children’s Hospital. The Werribee Fire Brigade’s First Lieutenant Darryl Wells said his brigade, along with the Wyndham Vale brigade, raised $77,350 for the appeal – $4000 more than last year. “The [Wyndham] brigades would like to thank the community of Wyndham and the travelling public for their generosity in supporting such a worthy cause, and a special thanks to all those people who turned up at the fire station and gave up their Good Friday to collect and raise that great amount,� Mr Wells
said. The Werribee Fire Brigade’s fundraising co-ordinator Peter May said that he â€œâ€Ś couldn’t be more proud to be a part of the Wyndham community, who again has shown such generous support both as collectors and donators to the Good Friday Appealâ€?. Last year, the Werribee brigade was recognised for raising more than $1 million for the Good Friday Appeal during the past 40 years. Motorist wants fine dismissed By Alesha Capone A Werribee woman is calling on Wyndham council to overturn a parking fine because the “no standing” sign she parked near was too high and hidden by foliage. Dorothy Harris-Pike said she recently received a postal reminder about a $159 parking fine which she received for being parked contrary to a “no stopping” sign on November 20 last year. At the time, she was parked in the Woolworths carpark, with her car facing
Watton Street in Werribee. Ms Harris-Pike said she did not see the sign saying her parking spot was a “no standing” one except for Woolworths permit holders. “The sign was far too high and obscured from vision by tree leaves,” Ms Harris-Pike said. “When I saw the infringement on my car for $159, I rang council immediately and explained the sign was not see-able,” she said. Ms Harris-Pike said she was told to put her concerns in writing and send them to the council, which she did. But she said the council continued to
insist that she pay the fine, which is due by April 17. “Of course, from their point of view I broke the law,” she said. “But I think they should take into account I didn’t notice, because they [the signs] hadn’t been there previously and I park there regularly.” Wyndham city operations director Stephen Thorpe said there were five separate signs in the carpark indicating that approximately 25 parking spaces were reserved for Woolworths permit holders.
“Ms Pike’s parking fine has been reviewed at her request,” he said. “However, following careful consideration it was determined that an infringement had occurred and the fine should not be dismissed. “There are legislated criteria that must be met for an infringement to be withdrawn. “A photo from the time the parking fine was issued also clearly shows a parking sign was visible nearby Ms Pike’s vehicle.” Mr Thorpe said Ms Pike could choose to have the matter of the fine heard in court if she wanted to fight the council’s decision.
Socks finds a haven When eight-year-old Sophia first laid eyes on Socks, it was love at first sight. Sophia’s family adopted the three-year-old greyhound about a month ago as part of the Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP). GAP, run by groups including Greyhound Racing Victoria, is aimed at finding homes for greyhounds once they are retired from racing. Sophia said that she had wanted a dog since she was “very young” and was delighted to meet Socks. “When I saw her, I loved her straight away,” she said. Sophia’s mother, Daisy, said Socks has quickly became a part of the family. “She loves to play with Sophia and she loves tennis balls,” Ms Lima said. “Initially, Socks was a bit shy, now she’s coming out of her shell. She’s adjusting really well and we love her.” Ms Lima said the family decided to adopt a greyhound after considering other dog breeds.
“We did some research and thought greyhounds would suit our lifestyle – they are calm and easy to care for,” she said. “For sure we would encourage people to think about adopting a greyhound that needs a home – they are great and they are lovely.” On Sunday, April 29, GAP will celebrate National Adoption Day across Australia. The Meadows, at 80 Northcorp Boulevard in Broadmeadows, will hold an adoption day between 11am and 3pm. The event is free but attendees must register. eal estate agents are not only having a wow of a time selling land and houses in the flourishing western suburbs, they also have plenty of available space on the allotment known as the Moral High Ground. This area is being vacated with monotonous regularity of late by a list of notables including political parties, our national cricket team and any sportsperson or official claiming certain injections are not on the banned list. They have joined the banks and the churches, long gone from the area. Outrage spread like wildfire when a political party reneged on an honorary arrangement with regard to an unwritten agreement, when mitigating circumstances prevented members from being present for a vote. The circumstances involved the religious beliefs of two parliamentarians and the house sitting on Good Friday. Now there is a combination made in who knows where. The other party, not to be referred to as the innocent party, was pushing for the sitting extension to take advantage of an ill member
whose vote was crucial and who would not be able to cast that vote. Suffice to say despite their protestations to the contrary, neither party here can claim any of the moral high ground. The lamentable exploits of our cricketers have been well documented. They have no claim to the MHG. I read with interest about a wonder drug being injected into footballers and athletes to relieve pain and it is seemingly OK because it is not on the WADA banned list. Have we learnt nothing from the Essendon debacle? One of our esteemed councillors is allegedly looking at his mayoral options – which would be fair enough, except it is as mayor of Melbourne. Whether this turns out to be a self-promotion campaign interests me not. There are not many people on social media who can claim the MHG, me among them. I suggest those who do make such claims cease using the new version of “the dog ate my homework” – aka “my account has been hacked”. ■

Tarneit man charged
Police arrested a 31-year-old Tarneit man on April 1 after he was allegedly detected travelling at high speeds along Dohertys Road about 2.30am. A police helicopter helped officers to track the man to an address in Tarneit. He was charged with drink-driving and speed-related offences. Petition bid for CCTV crime fight By Alesha Capone

A petition calling for CCTV cameras to be installed on the streets of Point Cook and Tarneit has been lodged with Wyndham council. Forty-two people have signed the petition, but 17 of the signatures have been ruled ineligible because they don’t meet the council’s guidelines – such as not entering full names and residential addresses. The petition, which was accepted at last week’s council meeting, requested that the council install CCTV in Tarneit and Point Cook “especially where gang crime has been reported multiple times”. “The installation of CCTV cameras will assist Victorian Police to control crime in our great city of Wyndham,” the petition stated. Privacy laws prevent the council from telling Star Weekly the name of the lead petitioner or whether the petition was submitted on behalf of a business or community group. Cr Intaj Khan threw his support behind the idea of CCTV being installed. “I think it’s important to acknowledge that CCTV cameras are vital to the city of Wyndham,” Cr Khan said. “We can have a trial – even just start with one or two CCTV cameras in Tarneit or Point Cook or anywhere in the city.” Cr Khan said he believed the council had already installed some CCTV cameras in Werribee South, near the marina. Wyndham police inspector Marty Allison said police did not have a particular view or stance on the use of CCTV. “Whatever decision is made by the elected representatives of Wyndham, Victoria Police will support that,” he said.
Top chef Chris Wade is taking the tastes of Australia to Africa. Mr Wade flew out last week to begin a tour of countries including Mauritius, South Africa, Kenya and Tanzania, during which he and other experts will promote Aussie produce. The tour is an initiative of the Australian Trade and Investment Commission, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Australian food producers. Mr Wade, who owns Glen Waverley restaurant Steak Ministry and has released a line #steakmaestro products, has previously worked with Marco Pierre White, Gordon Ramsay and Curtis Stone. Mr Wade grew up in Wyndham, attending St James the Apostle Primary School in Hoppers Crossing and MacKillop Regional College in Werribee. “In high school, I always used to invite kids on the school bus back to my place … I’d cook after school snacks for them,” he said. “Some of my mates at MacKillop had family businesses in Werribee South, growing vegetables as market gardeners. “I always have a little smile to myself when I see the familiar surnames on the side of my seasonal vegetable boxes – it’s good to know we’re still all together in a way.” CHRIS WADE

Small suburb, big disadvantage By Alesha Capone Laverton North residents are in the most disadvantaged area in Victoria, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics 2016 census. The ABS last week released a list of the nation’s suburbs and towns, ranking them in a “socio-economic indexes for areas (SEIFA)” list. The rankings were based on data collected during the 2016 census, including income, education, employment, occupation and housing characteristics.
According to the ABS figures, Laverton North – which is mostly home to industry and business – has 73 residents, and was ranked as the most disadvantaged in Victoria. During the 2011 census, Laverton North was ranked as the third most-disadvantaged area in the state. Census data from 2016 reveals, 37 Laverton North households reported a total weekly income of between nil and $499. Another 21 households reported weekly income of between $500 and $799 per week. Thirty-two of the Laverton North
respondents stated they were employed, while 33 said they were unemployed and looking for work, with the rest not stating whether they were in the labour force or not. In the 2016 census, Colac East, Norlane, Pioneer Bay and Coolaroo rounded out Victoria’s top-five most disadvantaged areas. The level of disadvantage across Wyndham suburbs has decreased since the 2011 census. Werribee was ranked 268th in the state in 2011 and had dropped to 345th in the latest census. Hoppers Crossing placed 567th in the 2016 census (compared to 470th in 2011),
Wyndham Vale 973rd (compared to 492nd in 2011), Werribee South 981st (compared to 711th in 2011) and Tarneit 1549th (compared to 893rd in 2011). Truganina was listed as the 1736th most disadvantaged area in Victoria (compared to 893rd in 2011) and Point Cook 2455th (compared to 1461th in 2011). The most “advantaged” suburb in Wyndham was Williams Landing, which placed 2550th in the state (compared to 1333th in 2011). Melbourne’s South Wharf, with just 130 residents, was found to be the most “advantaged” area in the state.
Bus company on a roll Wyndham-based bus company CDC Victoria has signed an agreement with Public Transport Victoria to continue operating its existing bus routes in Melbourne. CDC Victoria recently moved into its head office in Truganina, and provides services to the inner-east and western suburbs, as well as Ballarat and Geelong. The state government announced last week it had signed new contracts with three metropolitan bus operators, including CDC, which will begin on July 1 and run for 10 years, subject to performance targets. CDC Victoria chief executive, Nick Yap, said that the company – a subsidiary of ComfortDelGro, one of the largest land transport companies in the world – began operating in Melbourne in 2009. He said CDC Victoria was excited to have signed a new 10-year contract. “We’re looking forward to a productive and
long term relationship with the government to deliver better bus services in the communities that we serve,” he said. “This includes servicing the fast-growing city of Wyndham where we have recently invested $15 million to build a new modern facility equipped to serve the ever expanding population in the west.” Melburnians take more 117 million bus trips every year and the industry supports more than 4500 jobs. The Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan said the government was committed to “… modernising, expanding and upgrading Melbourne’s extensive bus network to deliver better services for passengers”. Local heroes treasured By Goya Dmytryshchak On Valentine’s Day in 1917, a shell exploded in front of Sergeant Albert Hyde and a locket from his fiancee probably saved his life. His story is among those featured in the Local Heroes military exhibition curated by the Altona Laverton Historical Society and on display at Altona Homestead. Albert Hyde fought at many battles including Gallipoli and later at Flers where he was wounded by a shell. As a young boy, Glen Hyde remembers being able to feel pieces of shrapnel in his father’s body. “He had 26 pieces of shrapnel in his body and a broken leg, but what possibly saved his life was the locket that was hit by a piece of shrapnel around his neck,” Mr Hyde said. He said his father had been wearing a locket on a chain around his neck from his fiancee Irene Newland, inscribed “Irene to Bert”. Albert would return to marry Irene, whose four brothers have an incredible story of their own. Of the four Newland brothers from Laverton, one was killed in action while another was awarded the Victoria Cross. Glen, his son and grandson – the latter whom is currently preparing for Afghanistan – are also featured in the exhibition. Organiser Maureen Lane said the exhibition contained memorabilia from the Boer War to Afghanistan. “It really brings home that it was not an exciting, wonderful thing like a lot of the movies show,” she said. “It was a horrendous thing. “The people who are serving now in Afghanistan, and all those who went to Vietnam and any of the other wars that we’ve

The exhibition includes information for quilters and sewers who would like to make quilts and laundry bags for Australians currently serving in Afghanistan. The historical society is seeking the names of people from Altona and Laverton who served in any war for inclusion on a database. Those magnificent men By Alesha Capone The true stories of five World War II Royal Australian Air Force veterans will be told in the show Flak, coming to Werribee later this month. Author, actor and broadcaster Michael Veitch will present the show at the Wyndham Cultural Centre on Friday, April 27 at 8pm. Veitch, who appeared in the television shows D-Generation, Fast Forward and Full Frontal, is also known for writing books on World War II aviation. He said the stories in Flak explored the real-life tales of comradeship, survival and bravery experienced by RAAF airmen. “Researching two books and finding these surviving airmen was the culmination of a lifelong interest in WW II aircraft,� Veitch said. “When I met the airmen to hear their stories, most of whom I tracked down through chaotic and vicarious means, I sort of fell in love with them. “The way they told their stories to me was in a way that created a total contrast between what they did and what they said. “They were all so modest and self-effacing, there was no sense of blowing their own trumpet.� Wyndham’s arts, culture and heritage portfolio holder Cr Tony Hooper said Veitch would also hold free workshops with the community. “He will be working in schools and the community during the week of Anzac Day, where he will perform enthralling excerpts of Flak for younger audiences and work with students on their own story writing techniques,� Cr Hooper said. Anzac Day in Wyndham The Werribee dawn service will again be centrepiece of Wyndham’s Anzac Day activities. Werribee RSL president Daryl Ryan said the service would begin at 6.30am on April 25, at the cenotaph on the corner of Station Place and Watton Street. Mr Ryan said the RSL would then host breakfast at the Kelly Park Centre in Werribee. Between 6500 and 8000 people had attended the dawn service in recent years and organisers are hopeful for a similar turnout this year. On Sunday, April 22, the RSL will also hold a pre-Anzac Day march along Watton Street. Anyone interested in participating should meet at the Wyndham Cultural Centre at 2pm for the 2.30pm march. Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard said Anzac Day was one of Australia’s most important national days. “I am always impressed and heartened by how many people attend Werribee’s dawn service, especially younger generations, who keep the memories of our brave servicemen and women alive,� Cr Maynard said. On Monday, April 23, volunteers at Werribee Plaza Library will help people research the histories of Australian World War I and II service personnel (bookings required). Manufacturer fined for ‘cavalier’ safety A Hoppers Crossing manufacturer has been fined $42,000 for failing to properly guard four pieces of machinery. Cardboard carton manufacturer Ramabo Pty Ltd last month pleaded guilty in the Werribee Magistrates Court to four charges of failing to maintain plant and equipment that was safe and without risks to health. In addition to the $42,00 fine, the company was ordered to pay $5867 in costs, but no conviction was recorded. The court heard that WorkSafe visited Ramabo in February last year and found that the business had exposed workers to the risk of being crushed or sustaining entanglement injuries by removing a guard that prevented access to hazardous, moving parts on a

Mosque opens its doors Virgin Mary Mosque in Hoppers Crossing will open its doors to the public this Sunday. The mosque will take part in the second annual Victorian Mosque Open Day which aims to show the rich diversity of the Muslim community. The open day is being co-ordinated by the Islamic Council of Victoria (ICV) and supported by the Victorian Multicultural Commission and the state government’s Office of Multicultural Affairs and Social Cohesion. The main objectives of the open day include creating awareness of Islam and Muslims, breaking down stereotypes surrounding the Muslim community and to encourage communication and mingling between non-Muslims and Muslims.
ICV president Mohamed Mohideen said the project was also aimed at strengthening community spirit. “Last year, we met people who had never been inside a mosque, others who lived across the road from one and always wondered what it was like inside,” he said. West transport pain exposed By Benjamin Millar The dire state of public transport in Melbourne’s west is being put in the spotlight in a campaign pushing for more investment ahead of the November state election. Sitting MPs and potential candidates across the traditionally safe Labor heartland are being targeted to commit to greater spending on transport to keep up with the area’s rapid population growth. The Time For The West campaign wants new bus services rolled out to better connect suburbs, new bike paths to allow more people to
cycle safely and a region-wide study to identify the most urgent transport projects needed to meet growth of about a million extra people in coming decades. Co-ordinated by LeadWest, an advocacy group backed by the west’s councils, the campaign is highlighting the causes of car dependency and difficulties residents have moving around the area. LeadWest is collecting stories from residents such as William Pendlebury, who spends almost two and a half hours a day on the round-trip between his Altona home and study in Sunshine – a trip that would take little more
than 20 minutes each way by car. Mr Pendlebury said his existing options were to take two buses or a bus and two trains. Infrequent services and indirect routes all added to his travel time. “The limits of the system mean it is quite slow,� he said. “A lot of it is the times in-between, waiting at a stop for the next bus.� LeadWest chief executive Craig Rowley said transport investment in Melbourne’s west had fallen well behind the pace of growth. “That makes it harder to spend enough time with our families, it’s harder to access job opportunities and too often there’s no option except to drive in congested traffic,� he said.
Mr Rowley said politicians needed to be doing more to make sure transport services met the needs of rapidly growing communities. “It’s time for politicians to listen to us and fix transport in the west,� he said. Mr Rowley pointed to a poll of more than 2000 voters conducted by Lonergan Research that found that poor public transport services would influence the vote of more than half of people in Melbourne’s west. Cam has the ride stuff Young Cameron Gatt is determined to reach the top of the world’s BMX rankings. The Truganina speedster, who will be 10 next month, is set to represent Australia at the UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) BMX World Championships in Azerbaijan in June. Cameron qualified for the international event at the BMX Australia National Championships last month, coming first in all his events. That included winning the 8-10 boys cruiser (a larger bike) category and defending his 2017 title in the 10 expert boys section, in which he raced against 55 other riders. “I had a crash during practice the day before competition and was feeling a bit sore,� Cameron said. “My parents were worried about me and wanted me to sit out on day one of the competition, but I was determined and pushed through it.�
Cameron said he had been inspired by watching his coach, Brandon Tehiko, race to first place in the elite men category at the UCIs, which qualified him for the World Cup in France. Cameron will depart for Azerbaijan on May 31. “I am currently world No.3 and am determined to turn that three into a one,� Cameron said. “I am also going to Tulsa, Oklahoma, in November to compete in the Grands Challenge, which is the biggest BMX event in the world. “I’m excited and confident – my mum is the one that gets nervous.� Cameron said his ultimate ambition was to win an Olympic gold medal in BMX for Australia. Don’t be a bunny and give your pet chocolate! Easter is here and my children cannot wait to enjoy some yummy chocolate eggs. Sadly for my two dogs there will be no Easter eggs for them as chocolate can be a life threatening toxin in pets. Chocolate contains methylxanthine alkaloids which are poorly tolerated in dogs compared to lucky humans. All types of chocolate can cause poisoning but dark chocolate is the most toxic. Symptoms can include gastrointestinal signs, a rapid weak heartbeat and possibly even tremors and seizures. Young dogs and certain breeds such as Labradors seem to be the most common culprits at our clinic at this time of year. While there is no specific antidote for chocolate poisoning seek veterinary care urgently. We can induce vomiting if the chocolate was eaten recently and give fluid therapy and medication to control the seizures and erratic heart rate. The

A new support group for people with chronic lung disorders has started in the west. The Western Breathers for LIFE, which stands for “Lung Information and Friendship for Everyone”, held its first meeting on Friday. The group will meet every second Friday of the month from 10am to noon at the Kelly Park Centre in Werribee, with a gold coin donation towards tea and coffee. Council maps out future roads By Alesha Capone A southern link over the Melbourne-Geelong rail line to the Princes Freeway has been identified as a “crucial component of the Wyndham West road network”. The rail overpass and a number of east-west arterial road connections have been highlighted in one of two Wyndham council draft reports which outline future road infrastructure needs in two of the area’s growth regions. The reports – although described as “not binding” and subject to change – were prepared
for the council to consult with landowners and developers on what developer contributions will be needed to fund projects in Wyndham North and Wyndham West. The Wyndham West report states the overpass, classified as state infrastructure, is to be: “funded and constructed by the state government at a cost which could approach $30 to $40 million”. Cr Henry Barlow said the council was in talks with the state government about funding the overpass. He said when completed, the overpass would
give residents access to the freeway without having to travel through the centre of Werribee. The council’s short-term focus in Wyndham West would be on delivering Armstrong-Ison Road, according to the report. The Wyndham North draft report stated the focus would continue to be on delivering Leakes Road, including the Tarneit Road and Leakes Road intersection, and duplicating Leakes Road east of the intersection to Forsyth Road. The report stated developer contributions of $19.2 million for the year ending June 30, 2017, meant that within the next one to four
years planning could also begin on additional projects including the Boundary Road and Derrimut Road intersection and Dohertys Road bridge over Skeleton Creek. Wyndham North precinct structure plans (PSPs) for areas known as Oakbank, Truganina, Riverdale and Tarneit North. Wyndham West includes PSPs for Alfred Road, Black Forest Road, Ballan Road, Westbrook, Quandong, Black Forest Road North and Bayview. Both areas are expected to be home to thousands of future residents.

Point Cook resident Claire Greenwood is a professional face-painter and mother of Amira, 8, and Nico, 6. She chats with Alesha Capone. What do you like most about Point Cook? I love the fact that Point Cook feels like a smallish town community … it’s kind of cut off by the bay, the farmland and the motorway. It doesn’t sprawl like the rest of Melbourne – it’s like its own small town next to the city. There’s lots of lovely people doing cool things in the community, like the pop-up park. I’ve painted down there a few times. It’s been so good for the area. Do you have a favourite place to have coffee or visit? Alamanda College have a fantastic cafe run by students. They learn to make coffees and bake the food they sell; it helps to prepare them for future careers. I meet my friends there every day. We also go to the Werribee Open Range Zoo a lot and go to the parks around here. The Pirate Ship Park is close by and the Crocodile Park. Tell me a bit about yourself. I’m a trained make-up artist. I started 18 years ago in New Zealand. I worked for about 10 years in make-up and did a bit of face-painting, and body art. I like doing make-up which is bright and colourful. We moved over here in 2011, following the earthquakes in Christchurch. Then I had the
kids, and I started getting into face-painting again and started my business, Paint My Party. I love working with children. The good thing about being a face-painter is you work at happy events. You help people celebrate at birthdays, christenings and functions. I think one of the things I really like doing is working with children with disabilities. I went to Warringa Park School last week and painted the students’
faces for Harmony Day. It’s such a lovely day. Sometimes, if kids are on the (autism) spectrum or something like that, or they’re scared of getting their face-painted, they come up to me to get it done. They tend to sense something in me which makes them trust me, What has been your most memorable face-painting job?
Last August, a boy named Nopera was turning 18, but sadly it was going to be his last birthday – he passed away in November. He had cerebral palsy and also a brain tumour. His family and friends organised an 18th birthday for him in Point Cook. I didn’t have any bookings that weekend so I donated my time and went and painted him and all his friends’ faces. I painted a Batman face for him – it was awesome.

A book, describing the history of the Chirnside family and their associations with Werribee’s foundations, was released on Sunday. It dispels many of the misconceptions which have grown up around the fabled brothers Thomas and Andrew who built the magnificent Werribee Park mansion a century ago.
The Werribee Torchlight Procession turned to terror for the Wilson family of Werribee when they were bashed for 10 minutes by four drunken youths while a crowd of about 30 people looked on last Sunday week. Mrs Leonie Wilson, 30, her husband Clint, 31, and their two children, Ross, 6, and Tegan, 16 months, were walking home after the parade and were outside the Werribee Hotel in Watton St when they were approached by the youths.
A police road safety campaign focusing on seatbelt restraint has come too late for an Altona Meadows family who’s child was killed in a car accident on Tuesday last week. The 18-month-old girl died after she and her sister, 3, were thrown from the back window of the car they were travelling in when it rolled, said Senior Sergeant Ken Scott of the Werribee Traffic Operations Group.

FRYING CHOCOLATE – IT’S A THING Regular readers of this column may recall I have a strange tradition over Easter. I don’t just eat Cadbury Crème Easter eggs – I deep fry them. My friend and fellow chocoholic Maria and I have enjoyed this annual event several years in a row now (Nigella Lawson and her deep-fried battered Bounty bars have a lot to answer for!). Each year we batter and deep fry a range of chocolate treats – fun size Mars Bars, Crunchies, you name it – as part of our mission to discover deep fried chocolate perfection!

As I write this column today, Maria and I have just completed our 2018 Easter fry up, with Lindt dark chocolate and coconut cream bars added to the mix this year. I know, I know – your arteries are probably hardening at the very thought, but remember – this is just a once-a-year thing. Everything in moderation! Just be super careful if you intend to try this at home – you’ve got to be on the ball when you’re deep frying with hot oil. If you’re unsure, have a look online at Nigella’s deep fried Bounty bars with pineapple. They’re really over the top, but the fresh zing of the pineapple cuts through the sweetness of the chocolate and coconut, making for heavenly – albeit shockingly rich – dessert.
FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? AC: I would probably go for deep fried eggplant and Chinese broccoli. FB: What is your favourite TV food show and who is your favourite TV food person? AC: If I am to be completely honest, I hardly get a chance to watch TV and even though this isn’t a real cooking show, I love Come Dine With Me. It makes laugh! So I guess my favourite TV food person is the voiceover guy in that show because he calls them out on their lies! SPORT Werribee feels the pain of twin defeats Werribee Devils have endured a gut-wrenching weekend in Big V division 1 women’s basketball. The Devils suffered two narrow losses to fall to 1-3 after four games. On Saturday night, Werribee played catch up most of the way, eventually suffering a 63-54 home defeat to Warrnambool Mermaids. The Devils were behind the eight ball after a lacklustre second period in which they were out-scored 20-10. They were able to hang in the game, but could never bridge the gap, despite the best efforts of import Alyssa Bennett, who had 14 points and four rebounds, and Georgia Tauschke, with 12 points and five rebounds. On Sunday, Werribee had a chance to atone for the loss, this time starting strongly and fading late in a 71-64 loss to Casey Cavaliers away at Casey Stadium. The Devils looked the goods at half-time, leading by six, but they fell away in the second
half, out-scored by 13 in the third and fourth periods. Bennett again was the star attraction for the Devils with 21 points and seven rebounds. Daniella Pisano, with 12 points and four assists, and Sam Moodie, with 11 points and 12 rebounds, were the other Devils standouts. In the men’s championship, Werribee Devils went down 109-95 to the Hume City Broncos at Eagle Stadium on Saturday night. The Broncos finished the game on an 18-4 run to consign the Devils to their second loss in three games. Import Konor Kulas filled it up for Werribee with 30 points and 12 rebounds. Sexton, talent manager at the Western Jets for the past 18 years, will finish up at the end of this month. Shane has spent nearly 30 years with AFL Victoria and has had an enormous influence on football in the west at the under-age level. The Jets’ program has had its critics, me included, over the years and Shane has certainly had strong opinions about the success and direction of the program. It is a very difficult job, as the under-age program is a very emotive area dealing with young men and women and their futures. I commend Shane for his dedication and patience, and wish him well in his retirement.

Football Club finally gets the chance to show off the bright new $11.75 million Avalon Airport Oval this Saturday night. The vision of the club’s board a decade ago and years of hard work by many people will be rewarded when a Werribee team exits the new changerooms and takes to the oval. The past few weeks in particular have been challenging for the staff, as have the past 18 months overall. The club started the season with a nail-biting loss to Geelong at Torquay on Easter Sunday. It was a gutsy effort in its first game as a non-aligned AFL club for nearly 20 years.

Late loss shakes Reds By Lance Jenkinson A five-minute lapse late in the game has seen Hoppers Crossing miss out on maximum points in a 2-2 draw with Western Suburbs in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1 at Ralph Reserve on Saturday. The Reds led by two goals late in the second half courtesy of star recruit Jason Hayne, but they coughed up the lead when Suburbs substitute Fernando Nunez played the role of the home side hero with a double of his own. Reds coach Shaun Barbara left the ground with a hollow feeling, knowing his side had dominated large chunks of the game, particularly in the first half. “After the first half and going 1-0 up at the break and putting in a really good performance, we’re probably not entirely happy with a draw to be fair,” he said. Eyeing off a second maximum points game in as many weeks after being awarded a default victory for Sydenham Park playing a suspended player in round one, Hoppers Crossing
appeared on track to do so at half-time. But the half-time whistle did halt its momentum. While Hayne was first to find the back of the net in the second half to double the Reds half-time lead, his team also began to play more conservatively and gave Suburbs a bit more possession in deeper areas. Suburbs took full advantage and their pressure eventually turned into goal and they were able to salvage a point through Nunez. “We spoke at half-time that we didn’t have to go and chase the game because we were 1-0 up, so to pick the right moments when to exploit them and try to go forward. “Whether that’s a little bit lost in translation or we started to be a little bit too conservative was probably one of those things,” he said. Hayne, a new acquisition, has been on target for Hoppers Crossing. The former Altona Magic frontman scored two goals against Point Cook in the FFA Cup over Easter and another two against Suburbs. “He’s proven to be very clinical around the 18-yard box,” Barbara said.
When Hoppers Crossing was on top in the game, it was the likes of midfielders Simon Tolli, Matthew Scott and Daniel Sweeney, and full-backs Kyoungjin Jeong and Dane Garbett who provided plenty of drive. Barbara refused to pinpoint individuals for praise on this occasion, saying it was an impressive effort all round. Hoppers Crossing will face the highly rated Geelong at Grange Reserve on Saturday. In state league 3, Point Cook lost 2-1 to Moreland United at Saltwater Reserve. Tapiwanashe Munyanyiwa scored for the Jets in the second half, but United did its damage in the first 45 minutes for a two goal lead. In state league 4, Truganina Hornets romped to a 5-1 win over Golden Plains at Bannockburn Recreation Precinct. Iidle Elmi fired in a double for the Hornets, while captain Federico Rossini, Abdullahi Salad and Giorgio Torelli also got on the scoresheet. In state league 5, Paul Dickie scored for West Point, but his team went down 2-1 to the Keilor Wolves at Arndell Park Reserve.

role of club boards is often talked about only when a crisis strikes – and then it is usually in a derogatory manner. Western Bulldogs president Peter Gordon is a good case in point. In the aftermath of the premiership win in 2016, he could do no wrong in the eyes of red, white and blue followers. Had he walked on water, no one wearing a Bulldogs’ premiership cap or T-shirt would have been surprised. Lately, though, he has been pilloried on social media as an aloof, egomaniacal control freak. That, incidentally, is not the Peter Gordon I know. People who give their time to boards are on a hiding to nothing. It is time the rank and file stepped back and appreciated the time given and the calibre of people involved. And remember they do it for $0,000,000. Their payment is the success of the club on and off the field, just as it is for you and me.

Point Cook all set for the thrill of western rivalries Excitement is building at Point Cook with the club on the verge of its debut match in the Western Region Football League division 2. The Bulldogs will face Manor Lakes at Saltwater Reserve on Saturday in their first game since moving their senior teams from the Victorian Amateur Football Association to the WRFL. Bulldogs coach Ian Denny said the move to the western suburbs competition was overwhelmingly supported by the club members. “Everyone is on board,” he said. In past seasons, the Bulldogs have mainly travelled over the West Gate Bridge for matches – and their only true derby rivalry was with Westbourne Grammarians. That will all change for the Bulldogs in the WRFL. “The players are looking forward to playing locally,” Denny said. “They’re playing against people they know or people they’ve heard of. “Rivalries will be built and it will be healthy for the western region.” Will Point Cook be competitive from day one? You better believe it.
WRFL - Round 1 fixtures Division 1: Albion v Caroline Springs, Deer Park v Altona, Spotswood v Wyndhamvale, St Albans v Hoppers Crossing, Sunshine v Werribee Districts. The first move Denny made was to bring in Wayde Skipper – a ruckman only three years removed from being the competition’s most valuable player. To complement Skipper, he brought in North Footscray best-and-fairest
winner Sean Curtis and one-time division 2 league best-and-fairest Jessi Lampi. Other key additions include midfielder Joel Reynolds, half-back/midfielder Nathan Bratby, forward Todd Caulfield and key defender Nick Weir. “We think we’ve built a list this year that we feel will be competitive,” Denny said. “That mix, with our youth at the club, will hopefully work out well.” Three-time club best-and-fairest Mason Kip has been re-appointed captain, while Marcus Groves will be vice-captain. Hoppers Crossing will venture to St Albans for the traditional season opener between the two clubs in division 1. Wyndhamvale will be looking to cause an upset when it faces Spotswood on the road, while Werribee Districts are away to last year’s runners-up, Sunshine Kangaroos. Defender makes his mark By Lance Jenkinson The recruitment of key defender Sam Collins was considered a VFL coup for Werribee. Collins, who played 14 games with Fremantle in the AFL and trained with St Kilda in the hope of being re-drafted, was surprisingly over-looked for a second chance in the big league, sparking frenzied interest from VFL pundits about where he would eventually land. The 23-year-old opted to join Werribee because of its stand-alone status and immediately showed his value to the team’s backline in the four-point opening round defeat to Geelong Cats at Torquay over Easter. Collins collected a massive 27 disposals, 14 marks and three tackles to walk away with the Damian Drum Medal for best-on-ground despite being on the losing side. Not only did he show immense leadership on the field, but also off it when he praised the whole defence for his flying start to the season. “I said after the game that I got a lot of the ball and I was the one who got noticed,” Collins said. “But I can’t under-rate the stuff that goes on behind the scenes from guys like Harry Boyd and Nick Coughlan, holding their man out so I can roll off and take the mark.” Collins has been encouraged by what he has seen from the Werribee backline so far. “We’re a completely new back six and it’s a new system,” Collins said. “The last six weeks we’ve shown it’s able to work effectively when we get it right. “There’s always going to be a few things to change and alter, but as a back six, we’re playing a really good style of defence. We’re attacking when we’ve got the ball and we’re really trying to put the forwards under pressure when we’re coming out … obviously we want to be hard to play against and I think we are with the system we’ve got at the moment.” Despite the loss and lamenting the slow start, Collins reckons Werribee can take plenty of positives out of its season opener. After a rough opening quarter that had Werribee trailing by 23 points at the first change, the team showed tremendous fighting spirit to come back and almost snatch victory. “To show a bit of resolve and to come back and play some real hard-fought footy was exciting,” Collins said. “Going forward, that’s going to be the attitude of the whole playing group – that we’re never out of it.” Werribee will turn its attention to the day its supporters have long been waiting for. facility when I was there and I think Werribee’s is going to be just as good,” Collins said. “They’ve put a lot of time into it and made sure we’ve got all the resources, so to play our first home game at Avalon Airport Oval is going to be pretty special.” The new facility was one reason why Collins opted to join Werribee, the other was its stand-alone status.
Having played for AFL-aligned state league clubs Box Hill Hawks in the VFL and Peel Thunder in the WAFL, he wanted to get back to a more positive team environment and use his time at Werribee as a springboard back to the AFL. “There’s no hidden agendas,” Collins said. “We’ve got the one game plan and the one goal, which is obviously to win a premiership.”

Western Jets in scrappy win Western Jets have ground out an ugly 31-point win over Eastern Ranges to make it two wins out of three in TAC Cup. The Jets left it late to create separation on the scoreboard, kicking five goals to one in the last quarter for a runaway win at the Williamstown Cricket Ground on Saturday. Jets coach Torin Baker admitted that his team was far from its best for large chunks of the game. “It certainly wasn’t a great spectacle today, even if it was some of the better conditions I’ve ever seen down at Williamstown,” he said. “The first half was pretty ordinary, to be honest, and even the third quarter we missed a lot of opportunities.” The Jets’ skill level was generally down, with midfielder Zak Butters an exception. Butters’ clean ball use was important to the Jets breaking free. “He was one who executed on the day when others were making mistakes around him,” Baker said. Connor Thar also had a big impact for the Jets. Like Butters, Thar did most of his damage in the midfield, but also rested forward to good effect. “They’re two boys who have played a lot of TAC Cup footy and are both in our leadership group, so it’s really good to see them playing the footy that they are,” Baker said. Xavier O’Halloran was challenged by the coaches at half-time and responded. The Jets’ captain had a greater impact in the second half, along with Stefan Radovanovic, Hamish Murphy, Jaden Rice and Tom Warner. Steve Kyriazis was dangerous in attack with two goals, making it six majors from his past two games. “Steve’s just a really crafty mid-sized forward,” Baker said. “He plays taller than his height, he’s very good overhead and he’s a nice kick.” The TAC Cup will have this weekend off due to a Vic Metro trial game. Butters, Murphy, Radovanovic, O’Halloran, Emerson Jeka, Daly Andrews and Aaron Clarke will feature in that game as they stake a claim for a spot in Vic Metro’s squad for the under-18 national championships.
