It’s a most egg-cellent time for Wyndham kids. Hundreds of children are expected to descend on Werribee Park this Friday for the annual Cadbury Easter Egg Hunt, which has raised more than $1 million for The Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal in the past 18 years. In what is touted as the largest Easter egg hunt in Australia, children aged three to 12 can take part in one of the many egg hunts throughout the day, enjoy rides, picnic in the park and say hello to the Easter Bunny. This year, proceeds raised will specifically go towards funding new infant warmers for critically ill patients and much-needed resuscitation and care equipment. Mobile phones snatched By Alesha Capone People selling mobile phones online are being targetted by thieves. At least six incidents have been reported in Wyndham this year of people being lured to surburban streets on the pretense of selling their phone, only to have it snatched from them. “It is believed the offenders are communicating with victims online and arranging to meet them at night, in predominantly quiet suburban areas before snatching the phone out of their hands and fleeing,” a Victoria Police spokeswoman
said. She said incidents reported in January and February occurred in Westonbury Drive, Truganina; Heaths Road, Hoppers Crossing and Winona Circuit, Tarneit. There have been another three incidents this month, the first on March 3, about 8.45pm, on Saint Martins Boulevard, Truganina. A similar theft occurred on March 11 about 9.10pm in Pindaroi Court, Tarneit and a third on March 20 about 8.15pm in Elkhorn Way, Point Cook. The victims, five men and one woman, range in age from 22 to 45 years.
The offenders have been described as males in their mid-to-late teens. No arrests have been made and police could not say whether the incidents were linked. Senior Sergeant Aaron Riches said one of the Wyndham victims had been threatened with violence but had made the “sensible choice” to hand over the phone and walk away. “We are targeting those who commit these crimes,” Senior Sergeant Riches said. “They think it’s OK to target vulnerable people and that’s pretty low.” He said anyone wanting to sell their phones
online should meet with prospective buyers at a time and place where there are plenty of other people around, such as a restaurant. He also suggested they be accompanied by a friend or family member. He cautioned people to be wary of online buyer’s accounts with titles such as “Gumtree User” instead of a persons’ name, and accounts which had no mobile phone numbers attached to the buyer. Teething problem for pokies ban By Charlene Macaulay Wyndham council has been left red-faced after hosting a launch party at the Plaza Tavern a fortnight after releasing a draft policy that plans to ban staff from holding council events at poker machine venues. Councillor Josh Gilligan has demanded a review into how the Plaza Tavern’s Manhattan Ballroom was selected for the Wyndham Business Awards launch last Thursday. The event was held a fortnight after the council released a draft gambling harm minimisation
policy that, if adopted unchanged, will “explicitly prohibit” council staff from holding events, activities, programs and social outings in venues with poker machines. Cr Gilligan, who chairs the council’s Gambling Reference Advocacy Group, said he had been blindsided by the Plaza Tavern being chosen as the venue. He did not attend the event. “There are no excuses for holding any council event at a venue where residents lost $7.28 million to pokies in the second half of 2017,” he said.

A candidate in the 2016 Wyndham council election has been convicted and fined after failing to declare who donated, and how much, to her election campaign. Werribee Magistrate Jennifer Grubissa heard the case of Helen Simeonidis (also known as Helen Fanakopoulou and Eleni Fanakopoulou) ex parte last Tuesday after the accused did not appear in court for a mention. After hearing the dates and details of emails, phone calls and registered letters sent to the accused, Magistrate Grubissa was critical of Mrs Simeonidis’s failure to lodge a campaign donation return and ordered her to pay a $1500 fine and $1000 in court costs. Two other candidates facing the same charge, Wanli (Lucy) Jiang and Sahra Ashkir, had their matters adjourned until April 17. Chief municipal inspector David Wolf said lodging a campaign donation return was an integral part of the election process. Candidates must submit campaign donation returns when they receive any gifts or donations over the value of $500. “A key factor in the integrity of local government is ensuring transparency on who has financially supported candidates and councillors,” he said. “While we don’t take prosecution lightly, it is important that we pursue these matters and allow the courts to determine the seriousness of the offence.”

Cemetery neglect anger By Alesha Capone Concerns have been raised about falling fences, potholes and neglect at the Werribee Cemetery. A woman contacted Star Weekly last week, saying that she and other residents were “outragedâ€? by the state of the grounds and maintenance at Werribee Cemetery. She said she had contacted Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust, which runs the cemetery, but â€œâ€Ś all the complaints have gone unheededâ€?. The woman, who wished to remain anonymous, supplied photographs of a collapsing fence that divides the cemetery from houses.

“Furthermore, rocks have been placed in the trenches alongside the dirt road to stop flooding,â€? she said. “The elderly are in danger of hurting themselves and other visitors injuring [their] ankles ‌ trying to access graves of loved ones. Disabled and wheelchair residents cannot visit the graves of their loved ones because they will be stuck in potholes.â€? The woman said the Werribee Cemetery “always seems to be neglectedâ€?. Trust acting communications manager Leigh Funston said a contractor had been engaged to replace the cemetery’s damaged timber fence. “Work on the new fence is scheduled to commence on March 28, weather conditions permitting,â€? he said.

Mr Funston said the existing fence had been damaged by high winds and that the trust would pay for all costs associated with the erection of the new fencing. He said that the trust’s efforts to minimise the impact of flooding at the cemetery had involved placing rocks in roadside water drains. “This initiative has overcome the problem of the drains filling with debris and the water not flowing to the stormwater pits,� he said. “Designated pathways, which are constructed of crushed rock, allow access over the drains.�
He said there were no current plans to replace the crushed rock pathways with concrete paths or upgrade existing roadways at Werribee Cemetery. Mr Funston said regular maintenance works were conducted at all Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust cemeteries. “If members of the local community have any queries or concerns, we would encourage them to call our customer care team on 1300 022 298 or enquiries@gmct.com.au,� he said.
Drilling begins for road works Work on the first part of a $1.8 billion Western Roads package has started. Night drilling to locate utilities and assess ground conditions began last week as part of the new Duncans Road and Princes Freeway interchange, which will include two new bridges over the Princes Freeway and additional entry and exit ramps. There will also be a new traffic light intersection at Duncans and K roads and a shared cycling and pedestrian path. The night work will take place on weekdays from 8pm to 6am until early April. The Duncans Road and Princes Freeway interchange is one of seven Wyndham road upgrades that will be completed between now and the end of 2021. Werribee MP Tim Pallas said the work would be staged, with every possible step being taken to minimise the amount of noise and light affecting nearby properties. “The Duncans Road interchange will include new freeway entry and exit ramps to and from Geelong, delivering better access to Werribee and reducing reliance on the nearby Cottrell Street railway crossing,� he said. “[These works will reduce] congestion, providing more reliable travel times and giving people better access to jobs, shops, schools and freight hubs.� Charlene Macaulay

New bid for Watton apartments By Charlene Macaulay New plans have been lodged for Watton Street’s long-awaited apartment block. Wyndham council has received amended plans for 116 Watton Street that expand on the original plans with a six-storey apartment block. If approved, the $10.5 million development will include 36 apartments, 11 retail premises and a basement carpark with 34 spaces. The project, originally a joint venture between local companies Madok Group and
KPD Portogallo, was billed as Werribee’s first block of high-end apartments, with construction starting in May, 2015, and a planned completion date of August, 2016. But the site has sat partially constructed for the better part of two years after the Madok Group pulled out of the development. Now, developer KPD Knight has joined KPD Portogallo to get the development up and running again. In submitting the amended plans to council, Keen Planning, which is acting on behalf of
the two developers, wrote: “As you are aware, construction commenced, however stopped following the construction of the basement level and a small portion of the ground floor. The site has recently been acquired by our client and they are eager to immediately recommence the construction of the building.” The new developers did not respond to Star Weekly’s request for comment by deadline. Wyndham city operations director Stephen Thorpe said he could not say when a decision on the proposed plans would be made.
The development is one of many high-rise complexes on the cards for Werribee’s CBD. Earlier this month, Wyndham council approved plans for a $49.5 million 12-storey hotel, education precinct and carpark development to be built on the corner of Synnot Street and Duncans Road. The site – currently a 70-space carpark – is one of four carparks owned by Wyndham council that will be converted to high-rise complexes in coming years in a bid to rejuvenate the heart of Werribee.
Artist’s feat of clay A Point Cook sculptor is one of 74 artists from all over Australia whose work has been selected for exhibition in this year’s Wyndham Art Prize. Carolyn Warren-Langford said she was honoured that her two pit-fired clay sculptures, titled And Still I Rise, and Aria for Rising, had been shortlisted for the final round alongside a range of other sculptures, photographs, drawings, paintings and videos. Warren-Langford said the pieces were inspired by the Maya Angelou poem Still I Rise. “I’ve always admired her writing, and the way she speaks about women,” she said. “It’s kind of a metaphor for going through crap in your life and then emerging stronger and better. Most of my work has got that kind of theme. “These pieces speak about what I’m feeling and what I’m trying to say through my art the best.” Warren-Langford was one of 200 artists to

Wyndham Vale station the best By Alesha Capone Public transport users have given Wyndham Vale station a major thumbs up, while Aircraft station has been rated one of the least liked in the state. The results come from the RACV’s On Track bi-annual survey, in which more than 18,000 commuters last year were asked for their opinions on issues including station carparks, seating, safety, cleanliness, shelter, toilet facilities and drop-off areas. Wyndam Vale station received a score of
8.9 (out of 10) from commuters, making it the “most liked” station in the state. Behind Wyndham Vale came Bentleigh with 8.8 and Waurn Ponds with 8.6. In contrast, Aircraft station scored 4.2 out of 10, putting it in the bottom three stations out of 209 that featured on the list. The survey did not rank 99 stations that received less than 20 responses from commuters. Donnybrook station, located in the northern suburbs, placed last with a score of 3.41 among those stations ranked. RACV mobility advocacy manager Dave
Jones said stations that scored poorly tended to have basic designs with limited shelter and poor transport interchanges. “Stations like Donnybrook and Aircraft are near major growth areas where housing estates have boomed, but the stations and local transport haven’t kept up with demand,” he said. Other ranked stations in and around Wyndham included Williams Landing (88th with a score of 6.7 out of 10). Tarneit placed 125th with a score of 6.3, Laverton placed 160th with a score of 5.7, Werribee ranked 186th with a score of 5.2 and
Hoppers Crossing placed 200th with a score of 5.0. A state government spokeswoman said that the government was “upgrading stations, delivering extra services and removing level crossings to improve the comfort, frequency and reliability of services in and around Wyndham”. “Werribee station will also soon be upgraded as part of a separate $8.7 million commitment to improve access and facilities at six stations on the metropolitan rail network,” the spokeswoman said.
Minor works on track Werribee train station is set to receive a number of aesthetic and disability upgrades in coming months in a minor win for commuters. Metro Trains representatives committed to upgrading the tactile paving on the platforms, re-tiling and re-asphalting works in a meeting with Wyndham council last week. Tactile paving is the orange and yellow plastic bumps on the ground which help people with vision-impairment know the edge of the platform is near. The commitment follows a Star Weekly story in August last year where the Rail, Tram and Bus Union called for an urgent upgrade of the tactile paving on Werribee train station’s platforms. Councillor Mia Shaw, who attended the meeting, said the council had also highlighted the need to improve the cleaning and general maintenance regime and for signage to be increased at key locations. “Whilst it may not be all the work we would
like to see done, I believe the meeting was a step in the right direction,” she said. “We understand that a significant investment will not be made in the short term whilst longer term decisions are made about the station in the context of the state government’s level crossing removal project and this makes sense, however we need to ensure that issues at the station are a priority.” Cr Shaw said a submission would also be made to Myki asking them to consider relocating its readers to remove a bottleneck. Meanwhile, western metropolitan MP Rachel-Carling Jenkins said she was keen to see the Werribee train station and Station Place forecourt spruced up. For the past two years, Ms Carling-Jenkins has called for $1 million to make the changes in her state government budget submission. Charlene Macaulay

Kevin Hillier says it’s time to embrace ageing
I
t is ironic that reality television is anything but real for the most part, yet dramas are capable of hitting a raw nerve more often than not. Tim Robbins, famous for his role in The Shawshank Redemption, is starring in a cable drama called Here and Now. He plays a 60-year-old writer and at his milestone birthday party he says: “I just haven’t figured out how to be old”. It struck me that none of us have, and probably never will. Do we want to? If we do, is it an admission that we don’t really want to think about? How often do you hear someone say “He is a young 60” or “He hasn’t aged well”? According to whom and compared to what would be my take. We read up on how to make sure we are financially secure in our old age, travelling the world in retirement and the joys of grandchildren, but no one wants to read a book that tells you about joint pain, forgetfulness, wrinkles and hearing loss, do they? We take great delight at school or work reunions when we see that others have
deteriorated at a faster rate than we have. Don’t deny it, it is human nature. In Tim’s words, we haven’t figured out how to be old because we don’t want to be old and most of what comes with it is often frightening or scary. The one thing we are still trying to figure out is how to remain useful and fulfilled, especially without work. There is only so much golf or bowls or baking anyone can enjoy or endure. I worry about some of my contemporaries who fail to cope when their careers come to an end. That void is hard to fill. We live in a disposable society and sadly one thing we tend to dispose of as easily as old socks is old people. Why? They have great experience, knowledge and a wise perspective on what really matters in life. They might need help with the computer or the phone or the wifi connection or the keyless hybrid vehicle in the garage, but so what? We have jumped so vigorously on the gender issue we have forgotten about a group of both sexes that – if you are not already part of – you soon will be. ■

Indie rockers rise up The Collegians – remember that name. It belongs to a Melbourne band poised to take the world by storm. The indie electronic rock band is a finalist in four categories of the International Song Writing Competition, with the song, Vaccine, selected out of more than 16,000 entries worldwide. If they are successful, they’ll be in the company of previous winners Vance Joy, Gotye, Bastille, Kehlani and Kasey Chambers. It’s a big deal for Glenn Patrick and the brothers Leigh – Gerry (who lives in Point Cook), Vince and James (who lives in Williamstown). The band, formed in 2012, will release its third single, Killer Killer, on April 14. Patrick, lead vocalist, said the band was thrilled to be representing Australia, especially
in the rock category, in which they are up against Birds of Tokyo. “It’s just about starting to build a foundation for the band,” he said. “It’s pretty much been a massive writing session the past few years, getting up the material, honing our sound. Now, we’ve started releasing tracks and getting momentum, which is good.” Drummer Vince added: “We wanted to mix up what [songs] we put out. Step it up for festival Point Cook dancer Hannah Bradsworth has invited everyone in Wyndham to join her for the Big Dance Festival, to be held next month. Big Dance will be held across the nation on International Dance Day, April 29, when thousands of people around the world will join together to dance in iconic locations, including Federation Square in Melbourne. In the lead-up to the event, Ausdance Victoria – with the support of Wyndham council – will be hosting a series of free workshops to help people learn the steps to the dance. The five-minute contemporary indigenous routine has been choreographed to suit people with a variety of capabilities and circumstances, including those who would like to perform standing or seated.

Relay weathers the storm By Charlene Macaulay Thousands of kilometres were walked and nearly a quarter of a million dollars raised at the weekend for the 2018 Wyndham Relay for Life. A total of 93 teams took to Werribee’s Victoria University Athletics Track for the planned 24-hour relay, with more than 1650 relayers – including cancer survivors and carers – taking to the track. Judy Gay, who was part of the team Trugin On For A Cure, has been in remission from renal cancer for the past 11 years, and said she loved being part of the event.

The event started at noon on Saturday and was meant to run through to noon on Sunday, but the weather had other plans, and relayers copped the full four seasons that Melbourne is famous for in one day. The event was cut short at 3am when wind speeds reached 80km/h and marquees and tents started coming down. Wyndham Relay for Life chairman Carradin Blyth said despite the bad weather, he was thrilled that the event had brought in more than $260,000 for the Cancer Council. The final tally won’t be known for at least another fortnight, with donations still flowing through. “It was absolutely fantastic, I think the whole vibe of ‘it takes a village to grow hope’ really came through,” he said.
Star Weekly also got in on the act, fielding a team of staff from the Werribee, Keilor Park and Melton editorial and advertising departments, plus family and friends. The team raised more than $3600 at the time Star Weekly went to print, bringing Star Weekly’s fundraising

Mambourin’s massive new estate By Alesha Capone Plans to build a new masterplanned community in Wyndham which will eventually be home to about 3500 residents have been announced. Frasers Property Australia has unveiled plans to build a $440 million community in Mambourin, located near Wyndham Vale, within an area bordered on two sides by the Regional Rail Link and Black Forest Road.
The first stage of the 1200-lot development has been approved by Wyndham council, with the first land to be released in April. The first stage of the plan includes a central 5.4-hectare wetland and park with an all-ages play area, fitness nodes, walking and cycling paths, shelters and barbecues. Designs for the Mambourin site, to be built on 115 hectares, also include a private school, performing arts centre, library and kindergarten.
The town centre will include 25,000 square metres of retail floor space with a supermarket, discount department store, 30 to 40 specialty stores and an entertainment precinct with a proposed cinema. Frasers Property has dubbed Mambourin a “five-minute community” due to the fact that residents will be living close to shops, services, amenities and transport. Frasers Property Australia general manager Victoria, Sarah Bloom, said home owners
would live in an area “… where everyday needs are within a walkable distance from home”. She said that Frasers Property was focused on creating places with an emphasis on health and wellbeing, with multiple options for outdoor activities, fitness and leisure. She said the “jewel in the crown” at Mambourin would be a residents’ club, featuring swimming pools, a multi-use court, gym, function rooms, cafe and barbecue area. Lifelong love of learning It’s the end of an era at Warringa Park School this week. Teacher Heather Pilcher is retiring today (Wednesday) after 31 years at the Hoppers Crossing school, which caters for students who have an intellectual disability. Mrs Pilcher went to teacher’s college straight out of high school, and started her career in mainstream primary schools in Strathmore and Hadfield before taking a break from teaching to have her kids. When her kids started school, Mrs Pilcher spent a year doing casual work before going full-time. “It was very, very different when I first started here. “The perception of special ed in the ’70s and early ’80s was very much that the children can’t learn much, they won’t ever be able to read, write, get a job, those sorts of things. “That perception is going now, very much so. “There’s so much more support for them now, which is great. These kids can learn, even
if it’s only learning to get themselves dressed. That’s what made it really worthwhile. “Now this very much operates like a mainstream school. “The kids are great and it’s just so rewarding to see even just the tiniest little step that they make. “To see the way the older students blossom when they start working in the [school] cafe, it just makes it all worthwhile.” Mrs Pilcher said she plans to enjoy retirement by spending more time with her family, including the newest addition to her family, a grandson. A special delivery An old vintage post box that was installed 150 years ago has been restored and is taking pride of place in Werribee’s CBD. The red cast iron Australia Post box was originally installed outside Werribee train station in the 1860s, but over time became the target of graffiti and vandalism. Following a request from a resident, the council decided to restore the old post box and enlisted the help of John Frattin from Agfab Engineering in Point Cook to return the vintage piece back to its former glory. Mr Frattin dismantled the post box and spent several months painstakingly restoring it, sourcing unique parts to ensure the post box would be historically correct. Mr Frattin, who has a penchant for restoring
vintage pieces in his spare time, said he was thrilled with the final product. “It was in a very bad state, it had been graffitied and vandalised, and the door hinge was broken,” he said. The restored post box, which has been coated in anti-graffiti lacquer, is now on the corner of Watton Street and Duncans Road in Werribee, out the front of the Old Shire Offices. The aperture has been covered so people don’t accidentally try and post their letters. ‘Eyesore’ units anger residents By Charlene Macaulay A band of Tarneit residents have reacted angrily to plans for double-storey units in their estate. Thirty-seven objections have been lodged with Wyndham council over a planning application to build 13 double-storey units on an Onyx Way block in Tarneit’s Ridge estate. The block, which is 1995 square metres (just under half an acre) is presently vacant. Star Weekly spoke with several residents from the Ridge estate about the planning application, with many fearing that, if approved, the units
would be an eyesore. Residents were also concerned that the units would be rented and devalue neighbouring properties, and spawn increases in crime, rubbish, and congestion on local roads. “Many of our blocks are 500 square metres-plus and we’ve bought [for] the very reason of having a bit of space around us – not these units/houses built on top of one another when there is plenty of land around to do that elsewhere,” resident Kylie Dahl said. Another resident, who asked not to be named, believes Tarneit is starting to look like a housing commission estate. He said most locals weren’t aware of the plans until he had doorknocked the area, and believes only four residents were officially contacted by the council for consultation.
Wyndham council city operations director Stephen Thorpe said residents would have the chance to raise their concerns to councillors and the developer at an upcoming town planning forum, which will be held once the public notification period is finished. “After the town planning forum, a report will be prepared for a decision on the application to be made at an ordinary council meeting. Mr Thorpe said the council had contacted residents who live in, or own, properties that adjoin the site, in accordance with the Planning and Environment Act.

Staff share traditions A Wyndham-based bus company has celebrated the cultures and diversity of it drivers. CDC Victoria bus drivers on Tuesday dressed in traditional clothing that reflected their cultural backgrounds as they manned their buses across the western suburbs. Staff members also brought foods signifying their cultural identity into work to share with each other. The company has celebrated its Taste of Harmony festival for the past three years. CDC Victoria last week moved into its new depot on Prosperity Street, Truganina. CDC Victoria chief executive Nick Yap said the decision to amalgamate the company’s Altona and Werribee depots into “one mega depot” was made to modernise facilities for
the benefit of staff and with any eye to future growth possibilities. “The 15 million dollar investment into a new modern facility at Wyndham allows us to be better equipped to serve the ever-expanding population in the west,” he said. The Truganina depot is home to 302 employees including 33 head office staff, 11 administration employees, 239 drivers and a 19-member maintenance crew. The depot has a fleet of 146 buses that cover 28 routes, not including school runs. Mayoral Column Last week Wyndham City CEO, Kelly Grigsby and I met with Victorian Leader of the Opposition, Matthew Guy, in Tarneit. Matthew visited the Tarneit Community Learning Centre to get a better understanding of the issues we are dealing with in Wyndham. I feel like I’ve been saying it ad nauseum lately, but as one of Australia’s fastest growing municipalities, which has officially outgrown Greater Geelong and will eventually surpass Canberra, we cannot afford to sit idly by and wait for someone else to take action. We are in desperate need of more education infrastructure, with 25 kindergartens, 20 primary schools and six high schools needed in Wyndham by 2036, just to keep up with our population boom. If we were to build five new schools tomorrow, they would be full by the end of the day. This was something I made perfectly clear to Matthew in our meeting and I’m glad he took the opportunity to listen to us. We need a commitment from whoever wins the next election that we will receive ongoing funding in this area. It’s no secret that we also need an incredible amount of investment in new and existing roads in Wyndham. The State Government’s $1.8 billion project to build and maintain roads mainly in Wyndham is very welcome, but it really only scratches the surface of what we need. Until the politicians get sick of me and start blocking my calls, we’ll continue to meet with people from both side of the aisle to speak up for our community and advocate for real results. Fair dinkum Easter fun By Alesha Capone The Werribee Mercy Hospital Easter Fair provided stacks of fun for about 1000 people on Sunday. Mercy Health has thanked community members for helping to make the fair a winner, with money raised from the day going toward the hospital’s new Critical Care Unit, which is set to open in the middle of the year. The fair, held at Victoria University’s Hoppers Lane campus, included an Easter egg hunt, drumming workshops by Afrobeat, a petting zoo, jumbo slide, food offerings and a variety of stalls. In the past 18 months, the Mercy Health Foundation has been running a fundraising appeal to help fit out the Critical Care Unit, which is being built as part of a state government-funded $85 million expansion of the hospital. Jail for kidnapping a salesman By Alesha Capone A man has been sentenced to more than four years jail after kidnapping a door-to-door salesman in Werribee and stealing his car. The County Court last week heard Nizar Soumaya, 47, met his victim when the man doorknocked his house while selling education courses. Soumaya agreed to sign up for a course and the victim returned to the house several times to complete paperwork. During one visit, the salesman told Soumaya
he could organise a discount if he wanted to buy a television and furniture. On November 15, 2015, the victim drove Soumaya to a warehouse in Truganina to collect a truck containing a television. After finding the warehouse gates locked, Soumaya directed the victim to drive his BMW to a friend’s house in College Road, Werribee. The court heard that Soumaya exited the car when they arrived in College Road and came back wearing a bandana and hood over his head. While directing the victim to drive around
Werribee, Soumaya handed him a round of ammunition and said, “This is for you if you go to police”. After about 20 minutes, the victim managed to stop his car and escape. He flagged down a taxi and then reported the crime to police. Two days later, police executed a search warrant at a house in Richmond Crescent, Werribee, where they found the victim’s BMW parked at the rear of the premises. Police also recovered an imitation firearm, a mobile phone belonging to the victim and
personal documents relating to the victim and his wife. Police arrested Soumaya at the scene. He told officers that the victim had sold him the BMW. A jury last week found Soumaya guilty of robbery, kidnapping and theft. He was sentenced to four years and three months jail and will be eligible for parole in two years and six months. County Court Judge Richard Smith said Soumaya’s victim had been through a “terrifying experience”.
Lion a legend in own den Merv Selzer knows more than most that little acts of kindness can have a big impact. The Werribee man has spent more than 55 years as a member of service clubs, including the past 33 years with Werribee Lions. During that time, he helped to run Werribee Park music festivals that attracted crowds of more than 10,000, was involved in the annual running of the Weerama Festival and, in 2006, went to East Timor to give assistance to families. “To me, it’s a great way of meeting people – and you can give back to the community,” he said. “A service club is like a big family.” Adhering to the Lions’ motto of “we serve”, Mr Selzer has always been available to help those in the community who need a little helping hand, but admits that these days, it can be difficult for people to make the time to be part of their local service club.
“There’s so many demands of people’s time now,” he said. Mr Selzer is one of many volunteers who will be honoured when the Werribee, Little River and Point Cook chapters of Lions get together on April 14 for a dinner-dance at Werribee Racecourse to celebrate the Lions International Centenary. Violent criminal to be deported By Alesha Capone
because his father – who had once been president of a motorcycle gang known as the Filthy Few – wanted to “escape the clutches” of the gang. The tribunal heard that since the age of 18, Ronaki has appeared in court about 20 times for crimes including unlawful assault, intentionally causing serious injury, possessing a controlled weapon, being present during an aggravated burglary, resisting police and contravening a family violence intervention order.
A New Zealand man with a long criminal history, including committing assaults in Hoppers Crossing and Sanctuary Lakes, will be deported from Australia. Earlier this month, the Administrative Appeals Tribunal upheld a decision by the Minister for Immigration and Border Protection to cancel the visa of Rangatira Ronaki. The tribunal heard Ronaki, 28, arrived in Australia at the age of 10 with his family,

Ronaki was found guilty of assaulting his then-partner at the Sanctuary Lakes Hotel in May 2015. After he punched and kicked her, the woman was taken to Footscray Hospital with swelling on her face, a cut lip, a black eye, bruised cheek bones and bruising on her neck
and arms. Last year, Ronaki pleaded guilty to assaulting another former partner at a service station in Hoppers Crossing. The tribunal heard that two witnesses at the fuel outlet contacted triple-0 because they were worried the woman was being kidnapped. Tribunal senior member Robert Cameron said Ronaki posed “a real and present risk of reoffending”. “It therefore follows that the Australian community would not expect the applicant to be allowed to remain in Australia,” he said.

The work of the Wyndham Community and Education Centre has been a given a lift with the official opening of its new head office. The new Werribee headquarters, at 20 Synnot Street, replace the old office on the Princes Highway in Werribee. Centre chief executive Jennie Barrera said the new premises included offices, meeting rooms and classrooms for staff, volunteers and students. “We opened up in January and we’ve filled the entire building,” she said. Ms Barrera said Wyndham Community and Education Centre operated in 25 other venues across the west and Geelong, including at 20 sites in Wyndham. A cultural space for people from Burma was being built at the centre to provide a space for traditional activities such as weaving. Werribee MP Tim Pallas, who spoke at the official opening, announced the state government would provide a $32,686 grant

Homeless figures on the rise By Alesha Capone The number of homeless people living in Wyndham has increased by 76 per cent within five years, according to new statistics. Last week, the Australian Bureau of Statistics released homelessness figures from the 2016 Census which showed there were 730 homeless people in Wyndham, up from 414 homeless people during the 2011 Census. This included 250 homeless people in the Werribee area, 132 in Tarneit and 109 in Hoppers Crossing. Out of all Victoria’s municipalities, Greater
Dandenong recorded the highest number of homeless people in the census, with 1942 residents sleeping rough. Melbourne City Mission (MCM) chief executive Vicki Sutton said the organisation was particularly concerned about the state’s rate of youth homelessness, with 9742 Victorians aged 25 and below recorded as sleeping rough. Ms Sutton said this was not surprising for staff from MCM, who run Frontyard Youth Service, which provides support to young people experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness. Ms Sutton said that for every 20 young
people who visited Frontyard, there was only one supported accommodation place available. “We have 40 or 50 young people per day coming into our offices at Frontyard,” Ms Sutton said. But Ms Sutton there was some positive news for young homeless people in Wyndham. Last year, the state government announced it would provide $3.5 million to build the Wyndham Foyer, which will provide supported accommodation for young people aged between 16 to 24. Ms Sutton said the government made the
announcement after advocacy from Wyndham council, MCM and other local services. She said the foyer, which will likely be built in Werribee, would give young people a place to live for up to two years, while they finished their education, gained employment experience and learned life skills. Ms Sutton said the Wyndham Foyer would open in 2020. MCM will hold its annual Sleep at the ‘G fundraising campaign on May 17. To find out more visit www.sleepattheg.com. au
Short and to the point Werribee resident Catriona Tyrrell is starring in a short film, to help raise awareness about the educational experiences of people on the autism spectrum. The film, which is made by Amaze – the peak body for people on the autism spectrum in Victoria – will be shown at the Spectrospective event on Monday, for World Autism Awareness Day. On the day, participating Village and independent cinemas will host $5 movie sessions featuring sensory-friendly films, for those on the autism spectrum. Cinema lights will be turned up and the sound turned down. Spectrospective will include screenings of the short film starring Tyrrell, which is about her and other adults on the autism spectrum, and their experiences in the education system. “I really enjoyed getting to tell my own story, in my own words, in the hope that it will help today’s generation of autistic children and
young people to experience their lives to the fullest,” Tyrrell said. “I hope it [the film] sends the message that difference is OK, that the education system has come a long way, but there is a way to go. Having a diagnosis doesn’t preclude a person living a fulfilling and meaningful life into adulthood, especially if they are given the right supports in the early years and the education system.” Tyrrell does voluntary work for Brotherhood of St Lawrence in Brunswick and is a Joey Scout leader, with the 1st Point Cook Scout Group. “I have been doing that for just over five years now and I love it,” she said. MY WYNDHAM Singer Michael Kwon and his wife moved from Mauritius to Point Cook about 15 months ago. He chats with Alesha Capone. What brought you to Australia? I worked for a big corporation in Mauritius and I retired nearly five years ago. We came here in December 2016. We have three daughters who came to study here, they got married here and still live here. We decided to come here too, and we are enjoying it. What do you like most about Point Cook? It’s quiet, I love the parks and the walking tracks. We’re enjoying the pop-up park here, bringing our grandson there. There are also lots of venues and restaurants, it’s very convenient for grocery shopping or going to Werribee Plaza. Wyndham is getting better and better, now we might be getting a market in Point Cook, and a Holiday Inn in Werribee. I like multiculturalism and diversity as a nation. It’s good to have different cultures all together as a melting pot. That is the strength of Australia, and the way to go forward in the future.
When I was 12, I became interested in music. I started singing around 20, I gave it a try (as a career) for only six months. I had to choose between music and work. I was also engaged at the time, we got married young. So I stopped pursuing music, and when I retired I took it up again. I sung with a few bands in Mauritius. Now I’m doing freelance music, covers, at events like markets and parties. What is more ingrained in my heart is to go out and sing for people in aged care homes. This is something I did in Mauritius, because I loved seeing the smiles and joy on the people’s faces. They come and say, ‘Thank you very much,’

How did you become interested in music?
because you bring back memories and remind them of their youth. I grew up in the ’50s and the ’60s, although I do a few ’70s and ’80s songs, and I sing in French too. I’m willing to do that for no financial return for me, just if homes will put a little towards costs
like transport. Not everything is about money. Have you performed at any venues in the west? Jamieson Way Community Centre asked me to
perform at their market, but it was when I will be going away for two months. During June and August, I am going to the United Kingdom to sing at a friend’s 85th birthday, and I have a gig at a wedding in Mauritius. On April 20, I will be playing at Central Hotel in Cootamundra.

The urban renewal plan unveiled last week for the central Werribee area provided no shocks for the property owners involved. The area is bounded by Watton, Wedge, McDonald, Anderson and Bridge streets.
One of the West’s biggest parades got off to a record breaking start on Saturday when a crowd of 18,000 lined the streets for Weribee’s 10th annual Weerama festival. Hundreds of enthusiastic onlookers flocked Watton St as colorful floats and community groups marched their way to Werribee’s Kelly Park.
The Premier was last week labelled by anti-toxic dump protestors as seriously misinformed or misled about the facility CSR wants to build in Wyndham. Werribee Residents Against Toxic Dump (WRATD) members and local politicians angrily claimed the Premier did not know what he was talking about when he spoke about the proposal on radio.
Five youths and a woman are lucky to be alive after the car in which they were travelling slammed into a tree near the Werribee River in Tarneit on March 14. Police believe two youths were in the boot of the car when the accident happened about 6.15pm.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir gets all aboard Braybook Stn Central West shopping centre, perched on Ashley Street, has long seemed to struggle to build a character of its own. Along with a couple of supermarkets, it has a variety of serviceable traders. But there often seems to be a revolving cast of empty shops, both in the centre proper and in the surrounding hub. So even as the parking lot invariably seems quite full, there never seems anything particularly memorable about the whole place. Until now, that has been true, too, for the food situation there, save for some hardy and long-running joints mostly geared to takeaway trade. But this fine new cafe is most worthy of being a food destination. Apparently run by the same folks who operate a similarly titled establishment in Northcote, Braybrook Stn is offering casual cafe dining that is classy and affordable. The menu runs through breakfast and lunch, with some dishes easily capable of doing duty as both. Wasabi milk chicken soba noodles ($18) are rather spectacular and delicious in every way. If the “soba” nomenclature and pickle signal Japanese origins, the dish also sports something of a green curry vibe suggesting another Asian country. There’s plentiful amounts of tender sliced chicken and broccolini in there, along with green onion, ginger and turmeric. My suspicions about the wisdom of adding

It all works and has nice-and-mild spice kick. Orecchiette ($17) works just fine as a warm salad kind of dish. Heat vegetable oil in same frypan, lightly dust meat in flour and cook in pan until browned on all sides. Remove meat from pan and place on top of vegetables. Return pan to heat and cook wine, stock and tomatoes for a few minutes. Pour over the top of the meat and vegetables. Add the bay leaves and thyme, cover dish with foil or lid and cook in oven for about 1 hour or until meat is very tender, turning the meat half way through. Check the level of the liquid and add more if you need to. Remove from oven and serve.

Wonders of the natural world – captured and on show in Geelong The winner of the 53rd Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition’s People’s Choice Award has been announced.
“It’s a great honour for Geelong to once again host this prestigious photography exhibition.”
The beautiful, heart-warming image of a gorilla and her carer is now on show at the National Wool Museum in Geelong. Winning Pikin and Appolinaire, by Jo-Anne McArthur, is joined by 24 short-listed images at the Museum until May 13.
Geelong mayor Bruce Harwood is encouraging locals and Melbournians alike to enjoy the exhibition.
“I took this photograph as the gorilla was being moved from her former enclosure within a safe forest sanctuary in Cameroon to a new and larger one, along with another a group of gorilla companions. “She was first sedated, but during the transfer to the new enclosure awoke. Luckily, she was not only very drowsy, but she was also in the arms of her caretaker, Appolinaire Ndohoudou, so she remained calm for the duration of the bumpy drive.” The stunning exhibition has been travelling the globe since the winners and finalists were announced – a world-class competition open to photographers of all ages and abilities, and opens for entries on an annual basis. The world-renowned exhibition is on loan from the Natural History Museum in London. The 100 extraordinary images celebrate the diversity of the natural world, ranging from intimate animal portraits to astonishing wild landscapes. Wildlife Photographer of the Year is the most prestigious photography event of its kind, providing a global platform that has showcased the natural world for more than 50 years. “This is the fourth year that the National Wool Museum has been the exclusive Victorian venue for Wildlife Photographer of the Year. This year is a particularly moving exhibition,” museum director Padraic Fisher says.
“Among the finalists were five Australian photographers, two of which were category winners. “Justin Gilligan’s stunning image of a Maori octopus feeding on giant spider crabs in Tasmania, Crab Surprise, won the behaviour: invertebrates category, and Gerry Pearce’s image of an Australian brush turkey, The Incubator Bird Bird, taken near his home in Sydney, was the winner of the behaviour: birds category.” The Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition is owned and developed by the Natural History Museum. The Natural History Museum exists to inspire a love of the natural world and unlock the big answers facing humanity and the planet. The exhibition opened in Geelong at the National Wool Museum in November and has been a great success after securing a spot in the world-renowned exhibition’s global tour. Geelong totally wrapped to be hosting the famous Scarf Festival again The he National Wool Museum’s popular Scarf Festival estival is on again, showcasing some of the world’s best wool artisans and offering inspiration to all those who love to create. Entries ntries for the awards that accompany the popular festival are now being accepted. Museum Director Padraic Fisher isher says the competition, now in its 15th year, celebrates textile artists from across Australia and around the world. “In the past, we have had entries from Mexico, Japan, England, Canada and the US. Wee feel, this year in particular, the theme will deeply resonate with participants and we look forward to seeing how scarf makers across Australia ustralia and the world interpret our theme, ‘Living ‘ on the land’, and celebrate their sense of place.” Scarf makers are encouraged to incorporate natural and built landscapes and the places where people live, work and play, into their designs. WAYNE NUGENT, MOTORSPORT PHOTOGRAPHER FB: How would you rate your cooking skills? WN: Good as long as I stay away from the sweeter side of things! I’m very much a fan of more traditional fare and spending a day poring over a meal to get the best out of the ingredients is something I enjoy immensely. FB: What is your signature dish? WN: Anchovy, garlic and rosemary slow-cooked roast lamb with all the traditional, home-style trimmings. FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? WN: A medium-rare rib-eye steak with duck fat roast potatoes, garlic butter brussels sprouts and whatever else will fit on the plate. Usually, being in charge of the proteins means I love a good steak when I do not have to cook it!

I always wanted to be a contestant, but a dessert challenge would cause me to curl up into the foetal position under my bench and drink the cooking wine! FB: What is your favourite food? WN: I love proteins of all types. The slower-cooked the better!
Every so often, my hubby does a market run. He loads up on insulated carry bags, drives into town and hits Queen Vic Market like a man on a mission, stocking up on some of our favourites … namely prawns, salmon, chops and steak. On his latest market mission, he found himself distracted by a display of beef brisket. “It just jumped out at me!” he says in the same way he talks of about Lindt dark chocolate bars with coconut cream he spies at the supermarket. He bought two kilos of the brisket and lugged it home with the rest of his meaty stash. Like this week’s Food Bytes guest Wayne, at our place we love our slow-cooked proteins – and if you’re on a budget, brisket is just about the best cheaper-cut option going around. The meat-to-fat ratio is such that it’s perfect for slow cooking. Using a tried and trusty recipe from the popular Recipe Tin Eats website, I divided the brisket into four portions, marinated in a spice rub and put it in the slow cooker on high for four hours, bubbling away in sauce of apple cider vinegar, tomato sauce, garlic, Worcestershire sauce and spices. That’s minimal preparation for some pretty impressive results. The meat came out soft and tender, with the texture of pulled pork. It’s sticky sweetness was divine when teamed with a generous serve of crunchy coleslaw. It’s the second time I’ve made this recipe and both times it’s been a winner. So if you haven’t tried brisket before, give it a go. You’ll find the recipe for this slow cooker beef brisket with barbecue sauce at recipetineats.com

They will be keen to atone when they next take to the court against Hume City Broncos at Eagle Stadium on April 7. In women’s division 1, Werribee Devils struggled with their long range shooting in a 57-48 loss to Camberwell Dragons at Balwyn High School on Sunday. The Devils shot 32 per cent from the field, but were just 1-from-10 from three-point land. Import Alyssa Bennett had a stellar game for the Devils with 17 points and 16 rebounds. Outside of Bennett, the scoring dried up, though Jessica Slade battled hard to score seven points and reel in 10 rebounds. The Devils will get a chance to refine their offence at training over the Easter break before a big double header weekend, which will see them play Warrnambool Mermaids at Eagle Stadium on April 7 and back up with a trip to Casey Cavaliers the day after. Saints break drought By Lance Jenkinson Seabrook was on edge until the very last ball of its drought-breaking Victorian Turf Cricket Association west A1 grand final win over Grand United at Crofts Reserve on Sunday. The Saints clinched their first 1st XI flag in 41 years, but were put through an emotional roller coaster before delivering the knock-out blow on a stubborn United late on the fourth day. Saints captain Leigh Edwards was already mentally worn out after a gripping opening weekend, but that was further heightened on days three and four when wet weather played havoc on Saturday and a fierce final day’s play on Sunday took a mental and physical toll. Edwards was just ecstatic to finish on the right side of the equation, winning outright by 11 runs. “It was won, it was lost, it was won, it was lost and then it was won – somehow we came out on top,” Edwards said. “That’s been the most mentally and physically draining game I’ve ever played in. “It was on for every single ball and you didn’t know what the outcome was going to be throughout. “There were ups and downs for the whole four days. “It was just unbelievable, the most challenging game I’ve been involved in.” Seabrook held a 24-run lead after the first innings, but that was merely loose change in a four-day contest. The Saints needed to back up in their second dig and try to bat Grand United out of the game, but failed to do so. A stop-start innings saw Seabrook post 117 – a flimsy lead of 141 runs. Only Jake Collins (26), Walgama Eranga (23) and Andrew Hodgart (26) offered up any kind of resistance in the top order. It could have been worse for the Saints, a lot worse, had it not been for a stoic 31-run ninth wicket partnership between Casey McNaught (13 off 78) and Hitesh Bavarva (16 off 57). “When I look back at that partnership, it’s probably the thing that has won us the grand final,” Edwards said. “Rather than being all out for probably 90, it’s got us over that 140 lead and made it a challenging score. “If they were only chasing 100, I don’t think we’d be premiers. Grand United made a promising start to the run chase on an enthralling final day. United was coasting at 2-73 and seemingly in control, but lost 5-25 in quick time to be 7-98 when the tail arrived at the crease. AFLW season has ended with a Bulldogs’ premiership and yet another podium celebration involving a non-playing captain. The controversy surrounding Katie Brennan’s suspension polarised opinion, with the Bulldogs exploring every avenue available to try to get the skipper across the line for the big game. I am no fan of an on-field decision making its way to the courts. A damages claim where personal injury is involved is a different matter, but for me this was tried in the appropriate code arenas and that is where it should end. Whether the offence warranted a suspension is again a totally different matter for discussion. Bulldog captains are not faring well in grand finals of late. In fact, they are not faring at all until after the result.

done to coach Paul Groves, the players and the staff and volunteers who worked so hard and now can bask in the glory of an AFLW premiership. It will not be too long before this grows into a major event on the sporting calendar. The speed of growth of the women’s game is amazing but needs to be harnessed, only to ensure the quality is not compromised because of the lure of the dollar. The money will come in time if the games get better, more skilful and more entertaining. The biggest challenge is the quality of grass roots coaching. When you have someone like Chris Grant involved at a suburban club such as Spotswood then you know the women’s game is going in the right direction.

cricket legend Arthur Dean died last weekend. Arthur was a former club captain who represented Victoria and led his side to the club’s first grand final in the mid ’60s. Arthur was named in the Footscray team of the century and was elevated to the Hall of Fame. Footscray has a wonderful history of fast bowling and Arthur was one of the finest. Also sad to see the passing of Stephen Myall, a lawyer and magistrate who had a long association with local footy through his role on the tribunal and board of the WRFL.

The VFL season kicks off this Sunday at Torquay when Geelong and Werribee meet in what is becoming an annual seaside opener to the season. Comensoli, who made 24 off 70, eventually ran out of support and would be the final wicket to go as United was all out for 130. Vishva Weerakoon took the premiership clinching wicket of Comensoli, finishing the innings with 4-57 and the match with nine wickets, sealing man of the match honours. Edwards praised both Weerakoon and the entire Saints bowling unit. “It was a well deserved award,” Edwards said. “He was just a class above and proved it with nine wickets in a grand final. “My bowlers all year have done the job for
me. “It’s a five-person attack and it doesn’t matter who I throw the ball to, I know I’m going to get results.” Edwards was delighted to see the reaction of the older members of Seabrook, who have waited four decades for this moment. The Saints did it in style, finishing the summer undefeated. “I’ve got older generations thanking me and the players, so we know how much it means for the club,” Edwards said. “You see what it means to the club when you actually deliver a premiership.”

Import Konor Kulas has made a big impression since his arrival to the Werribee Devils.
It was a bleak Saturday night for the Werribee Devils in the Big V basketball men’s state championship. The excitement of the Devils season opening victory wore off quickly with a 108-82 thrashing at the hands of the Ringwood Hawks at The Rings on Saturday night. The Devils actually made a promising start to the game, out-scoring the home side 26-21 in the first period, but there was little joy thereafter as the Hawks extended their lead at every break to run out convincing 26-point winners. The bulk of Werribee’s starters performed strongly. Import Konor Kulas was again the pick of the bunch with 20 points and eight rebounds. Fellow import Bryan Nagy finished with 16 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Devils captain Paul Elderkin had 16 points to go with eight rebounds, while Deng Chan posted 16 points and five rebounds. The Devils will go into the Easter break with a 1-1 record.

Good times as Sharks drop in on Rhinos Wyndham rugby union fans received an unexpected treat when Super Rugby’s Sharks held a number of training sessions at Mossfiel Reserve in Hoppers Crossing last week. The Sharks, based in Durban, South Africa, were in town to play the Melbourne Rebels on Friday night, but needed a training venue at short notice for their Monday and Tuesday sessions. Impressed with the surface at Mossfiel Reserve, the Sharks then decided to move their captain’s run to the venue on Thursday, much to the thrill of members of the Wyndham City Rhinos, the local Victorian Rugby Union club. Wyndham City president Ean Drummond said the club enjoyed hosting the South Africans. “The venues they had pencilled in, they became unavailable,” he said. “The Rebels were aware that we had the second field that is not
used for cricket or anything else, so they made the inquiry. “They trained at the venue on Monday and Tuesday, liked the way our field was and the facilities, even though it’s kind of old, so they asked if they could have the captain’s run at our ground.” Word spread on social media about the Sharks training at Mossfiel Reserve and a lot of rugby fans turned out to see them. The Sharks’ response to the local fans was praised, as they were willing to meet and greet supporters – and even signed a ball for the Rhinos to commemorate the visit. “We’ve got a fairly good contingent of South Africans that have got kids that play at our club … with the broader community, it doesn’t take much to spread the word that they were there,” Drummond said. “This group of Sharks players, they’re really a good bunch of fine
young blokes. They were very well mannered, appreciative.” The successful Sharks visit has opened up possibilities for Mossfiel Reserve to host touring teams in the future. The venue will be even more desirable when the newly redeveloped clubrooms are officially unveiled in the middle of this year. Drummond thanked the Rebels for considering his club for the host role. He said the Rebels had been more active with their involvement in grassroots clubs this season. “We had visits from Rebels players at the beginning of our registration period,” Drummond said. “Our under-10s played at half-time of the Super Rugby game between the Sharks and the Rebels.” Lance Jenkinson

Reds fall at first hurdle Hoppers Crossing began life in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1 with a defeat on Saturday. The newly promoted Reds were given a 1-0 inauguration wedgie by Sydenham Park on their home pitch at Grange Reserve. It was Sydenham Park veteran Koce Delev who scored the decisive goal of the game late in the second half. Hornets hit their stride By Lance Jenkinson It was a revolving door at Truganina during the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 4 west off season, so coach Sergio Lunedai went into the season with a hint of trepidation. The Hornets boss was not about to make any outlandish statements about where the team could finish this season because he truthfully did not know how all the new players would mesh. “We’re working, seeing what we can do, as long as we’re safe,” Lunedai said of the expectations. “We changed a lot of players from last year, so our aim is to try and have a comfortable season, not fighting to stave off relegation. “They’re fitting in pretty well, so I was confident we’d come out with a good result [in round one].” Truganina offered up a tasty entree of what they could serve up with some brilliant performances in the FFA Cup. The Hornets hammered Glen Waverley 6-1, toppled Corio 2-1 and then beat Essendon United 1-0 to be one of the last remaining state league 4 sides in the competition.
So, the Hornets had form, but the real test was going to be the league opener, and they passed that assignment with flying colours on Saturday, trouncing Melbourne City 6-0 at Arndell Park Reserve. Lunedai was smiling from ear to ear after watching the Hornets win with a six-pack. “It was round one, so everyone was a bit nervous for the start of the season,” he said. “The nerves only lasted about 20 minutes. “After the first goal, they started to relax and play like they had done in the pre-season. “We’re happy with what we did in the first game.” Truganina incredibly had two players score hat-tricks on the day. Stand-in skipper Federico Rossini and second half substitute Achol Nai each bagged three goals. Rossini actually required stitches mid game after a stray elbow to the face, but it did not stop him from adding second and third goals to his tally. “We gave him the nickname of the Lion King because you can’t stop him,” Lunedai said. “We had to stitch him up because he got an elbow in the face, but after that he scored two goals.
“He went back on and scored a cracker from 20 yards. “He showed how a captain should be on the pitch. “He’s a leader, he’s the man to follow and he gives 100 per cent in everything he does.” Nai was an inspired choice to come on as a sub in the second half. The target man scored his three goals in the space of about 25 minutes. “He’s a big dude, probably seven-foot tall, he’s just enormous,” Lunedai said. “He was the card I had up my sleeve. “Him and Federico were just too much for Melbourne City. “He’s so clinical in front of goals.” Truganina will turn its attention back to the FFA Cup on Easter weekend. The Hornets will have their toughest test to date against NPL club Whittlesea Ranges at Arndell Park Reserve on Saturday at 2pm. Lunedai opted for the 2pm kick-off so Wyndham soccer fans can get to both the Hornets game and the local derby between Point Cook and Hoppers Crossing just over the bridge at Saltwater Reserve from 4.30pm. Werribee City is also alive in the cup, playing against Avondale at Galvin Park at 2pm.
Werribee set for new season Werribee will open its Victorian Football League season in the traditional Easter Sunday clash with the Geelong Cats at the Torquay Football Ground. The club finished its pre-season campaign in the wet at RAMS Arena in Craigieburn on Saturday with a 36-point loss to Essendon. In a low-scoring game, Werribee could only manage two goals, but the game was played in terrible conditions. The leading possession winners for Werribee were club champion Matt Hanson with 20 disposals and Ben Moloney with 18. The restructured Werribee backline, led by Sam Collins, Nick Coughlan, Harry Boyd and Louis Pinnuck, held the Bombers to just 14 scoring shots. Werribee only had one less scoring shot on the day, but kicked a wayward 2.11 and it went some way to costing them the game.
