A special birthday wish By Goya Dmytryshchak Little Logan celebrated his fourth birthday on Monday and his family had a very big wish. After seven months of chemotherapy, Logan’s test results this Friday will tell if he is in remission. “He finished his last treatment on March 2 and we’re still waiting on further tests to see if he’s in remission or not,” Logan’s mother Jo Ashcroft said. “We hopefully find out on Friday.” Logan was diagnosed at birth with a rare genetic disorder called Beckwith–Wiedemann syndrome, also classed as an overgrowth syndrome in children.

“Roughly one in 13,000 people are diagnosed with BWS,” Ms Ashcroft said. “With all of that comes all different complications, like overgrowth in the body, their cells are a lot bigger. “At birth, they’re higher weight, they have enlarged tongues to enlarged organs – there’s all different spectrums of it. “With that, also comes increased risk of childhood cancer because of the rapid growth in their body.” Logan has been screened for cancer every three months from the day he was born. “In May last year, they picked up a cyst in his kidney,” Ms Ashcroft said. “Within a week, he was biopsied and diagnosed with a Wilms tumour. “He went in to a six-week course of chemotherapy. They removed the tumor and a little portion of his kidney.” Brave Logan then underwent another 27-weeks of chemotherapy. The Hoppers Crossing family is determined to help others going through similar circustances. The family has a Relay for Life team, Logan’s Heroes, which raises money for the Cancer Council. One of its fundraising events in the lead-up to this year’s relay will be a car boot sale. The sale is on Saturday, March 24 from 9am-1pm at the Louis Joel Arts and Community Centre, 5 Sargood Street, Altona. Entry is by gold coin donation or $15 for a car. Details: 0407 362 021

Council declines Ecoville offer By Charlene Macaulay Ecoville Community Park may be put on the market after Wyndham council refused an offer to take over the running of the site. The council last week rebuffed a request from the Ecoville owners corporation to take ownership of Ecoville Park and fix up the site, instead agreeing to take over a small parcel of land on the corner of Leakes Road and Crossway Avenue, which is adjacent to council-owned land. Councillor Kim McAliney said she shared
the community’s concerns about safety in and around Ecoville Park, but believed taking responsibility for the site would burden the council with significant maintenance costs. “Taking the community park over is a liability … it also sets a precedent for the body corporates so when situations like this occur, council will be the saviour.” Fellow councillor Josh Gilligan, who was in favour of the council taking on Ecoville Park, said the decision to walk away from the site would “lead to months of further uncertainty” for residents.

Andrew Yates from Strata Data, the appointed owners corporation manager, said the owners corporation believed the council would have been in a better position to manage the site in the long term. “This is a particularly complicated issue that we think everyone would agree extends far
further than the resources and responsibility of the 358 owners and residents at Ecoville,” Mr Yates said. “It was considered by the owners that the resources of local council are better equipped and ultimately more responsible to handle these societal issues.” Mr Yates said in light of the council’s decision, the owners corporation was “currently considering all options in relation to the future of the park, including continuing to investigate the option of selling off [the] park for redevelopment.

Swimmers, this one’s for you. Wyndham council is running a survey to help shape future planning and operation of the Werribee Outdoor Pool. It wants to know how people use the pool, what draws swimmers to it and their preferred opening hours. Wyndham sports development portfolio holder Peter Maynard said the council was keen to find out what visitors liked about the Werribee Outdoor Pool and any suggested improvements that could be made. “The survey responses will be used to inform future planning to improve the visitor experience, for example areas such as customer service, facility activation and future capital works,” Cr Maynard said. “While the changerooms at Werribee Outdoor Pool were redeveloped prior to the start of the 2017-18 season, there are currently no further plans to redevelop the facility.” Wyndham council last year splashed out $300,000 on major upgrades to the changerooms and irrigation system. The facility also received a lick of paint to complete the new look. Cr Maynard said there had been more than 54,000 visits to the Werribee Outdoor Pool last season, with the centre on track to pass that tally this season. The pool, which opens during the warmer months each year, will remain open until March 31.

Timber toppling is a sore point By Charlene Macaulay Wyndham residents have reacted angrily to the removal of 200 more trees from Werribee’s Riverwalk estate. Development Victoria, which is developing the estate in a joint venture with Melbourne Water, cut down 200 trees along Farm Road last Friday to make way for stages 20 to 22 of the housing development, which will include 2260 residences once complete. The felling comes six months after the state government body cut down a number of sugar gum and eucalyptus trees to make way
for a new display village along Geelong Road. Residents took to Facebook in droves last week in protest about the latest tree removal, with many branding the move disgraceful. In response to a post on the Westleigh Gardens Community Facebook page, Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard said the council was “not happy one little bit about this�. He encouraged residents to voice their concerns with Development Victoria directly. Peter Hood, from Development Victoria, stressed the felled trees were not heritage or old-growth trees, adding that the masterplan for Riverwalk included 5000 new trees.

“Approval for these works was received from Wyndham council as part of the overall development plan and will allow work to start on new wetlands and a neighbourhood park,� he said. Councillor Mia Shaw said she shared the residents’ disappointment. “It is my personal view that the trees should
remain ‌ in a growing city like Wyndham, we need to ensure that development does not come at the cost of amenity and sense of place,â€? she said. “The Riverwalk Development Plan was approved back in 2010, which means there is no opportunity for this council to intervene. However, I do believe there is more we could be doing to improve the gateways to our city and this is something we are currently working on.â€? Wyndham council city operations director Stephen Thorpe said: “We have worked to keep as many trees as possible, but in this case the developer is able to remove these trees as part of their approved plans.â€?
On track to save lives These bright sparks will be putting their feet to work later this month in a 24-hour relay to raise money for cancer research. Team Bright Sparks has had a Relay for Life team every year since Wyndham held its very first event in 2002, raising $5000 on average every year for the Cancer Council. Team captain Lesley Hebden lost her father and aunt to cancer within a week of each other before she did her first Relay for Life event. “It was a time of life where I had a bit of time to do something voluntary, which is why I joined the committee and then decided that we’d start a team as well just to do something about cancer,� she said. “It was a way to do something positive as a way of dealing with grief. “We just enjoy each other’s company and being together. We always find the first lap, the survivor’s lap, special, because we now have
more of our team walking as survivors. We always find that a very moving time. “It’s something positive to do in the fight against cancer. We’ve seen too many people – especially young people – with it, and I think it’s a fight that we can hopefully win.� A total 91 teams have registered for this year’s Wyndham Relay for Life, which will be held across March 24-25 at the VU athletics track. Sanctuary suburb push on again By Charlene Macaulay Sanctuary Lakes residents have reignited a campaign to turn their estate into a suburb. Wyndham council will spend the next month gauging community sentiment on the long-running debate following a request from Sanctuary Lakes Resort Services, the owners’ corporation, that the estate become a suburb in its own right. The council has written to more than 7000 affected Point Cook residents asking them what
the boundaries of Sanctuary Lakes should be if it was to be recognised as a stand-alone suburb. The council has also written to a number of Hobsons Bay residents. The move comes almost four years after Wyndham council knocked back a request by Sanctuary Lakes residents that the council write to the Office of Geographic Names and recommend the estate be granted suburb status. At the time, Wyndham council chief executive Kelly Grigsby said Sanctuary Lakes
did not meet OGN guidelines for a suburb and would need ministerial approval to become one. If the latest suburb bid is successful, it would become the second Wyndham estate to become a suburb, following Manor Lakes. Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard said the consultation was the first step in proclaiming the area a suburb. “There is a formal process required to determine whether an area should be designated a suburb,” he said. “Once community feedback
is received, a report will be considered by council, which will take into consideration the views of residents and stakeholders as well as other operational factors that could arise. “If the proposal is supported, the matter will be referred to the state government’s Registrar for Geographic Names, who will make the ultimate decision.” The consultation period will run from March 14 until April 18. That’s the message from the Werribee Red Cross Blood Service as it tries to overcome an annual blood donation shortfall due to two long weekends within the month thanks to Labour Day and Easter. The Werribee Donor Centre needs another 800 blood donors over the next four weeks to help meet patient needs. Blood service spokeswoman Stephanie Reynolds said Australians overestimated how many people donate blood, and underestimated how much blood was in demand. “Blood donations don’t last forever. O
bserving people when they don’t think they are being watched is one of the joys of life. I love people watching, and it occurs to me it is a dying art. That is a shame on many levels. The more time millennials spend with their faces buried in their phones and devices, the less time they have to see the world and the people in it. Enough has been written about the demise of conversation due to devices. People watching costs nothing and gives so much. Over the years I think I have learnt as much about dealing with people by watching them as talking to them. Body language is a form of communication that teaches us plenty about the state of someone. The way a person walks, stands and sits can tell you more than thousands of words. Sit in the middle of Pacific Werribee one day for half an hour and you will see a movie to rival anything on at the Village Gold Class. Sometimes it is disturbing, amusing, educational and entertaining. It also makes you think seriously about your own behaviour. We often bemoan the erosion of social skills
of the younger generation and I think this is part of it. The same goes for movies for passengers in the back seats of cars. What happened to taking in the scenery, listening to the radio or music and enjoying leaving the city behind for a day at the beach or in the country? Let’s face it, the kids can watch Thomas The Tank Engine on a device anywhere. While some car trips are more monotonous than others, do we really need it every time? Having said that, there are times I would like a movie on in the front seat, especially those long delays on the Westgate. The other big advantage of people watching is the price – it is free and for the most part available 24/7. It is showing now in parking lots, restaurants, shopping centres, pubs, sporting arenas, bus stops and supermarkets (one of my personal favourites) and even your own house or better still, at the neighbours. Try it soon and I have no doubt you will not only learn things but you will definitely feel better about yourself. It also reminds you when next you walk out the front door, somebody might be watching you. ■

Theft charges
Police arrested a 30-year-old Werribee woman, riding an allegedly stolen motorbike along Sayers Road in Truganina, last Monday. Police followed the woman to Williams Landing and she was apprenhended while allegedly trying to run away about 12.20am. The woman was charged with theft of a motor vehicle, evading police, exceeding the speed limit by 45km/h and various traffic charges.

Kindergartens ease demand Temporary kindergartens will open in Tarneit and Wyndham Vale to help cope with the demand for early childhood education. The new kinders will be Tarneit North Kindergarten in Goddard Street and the Wyndham Vale Primary School Kindergarten in Ribblesdale Avenue. Wyndham’s family friendly city portfolio holder Cr Mia Shaw said the kindergartens would open in term two, starting April 16. The two new kindergartens, which will be housed in portable demountable buildings, might be relocated elsewhere once permanent kindergartens are opened in Tarneit and Wyndham Vale. The council, working in partnership with the Department of Education and Training, fast-tracked the two temporary kindergartens to service an identified “short-term shortfall of kindergarten” places in the two suburbs. Wyndham’s learning city portfolio holder Cr Josh Gilligan said council analysis shows the municipality needs 25 new kindergartens, 20 primary schools and six secondary schools by 2036. Applications for the Tarneit North and Wyndham Vale Primary School Kindergartens are open now. Four-year-old kindergarten enrolments for 2019 will open on April 3 for all Wyndham kindergartens. A six-bedroom house with ornamental gardens and a miniature orchard has sold for a record price in Hoppers Crossing. The Queen Anne-inspired house at 19-21 Ashley Avenue sold for $2.25 million. The house, about 114 square metres and on a 2300 square metre block, also features a grand formal dining room; an entertainment room with a 5.5-metre mahogany bar; an indoor pool and sauna; crystal chandeliers in all the living areas and bedrooms; and a garage which can accommodate up to four cars.

Mr Elawadhi said the previous record price for a house in Hoppers Crossing was $2.1 million – a five-bedroom residence at 771 Sayers Road, which he also sold. Mr Elawadhi said he received multiple offers for the Ashley Avenue house. He said the chance to market such a property did not come along very often. “An opportunity like this is rare, as there is not really anything else like that in the area,” he said. Mr Elawadhi said he would soon be selling a house at 382 Derrimut Road in Hoppers Crossing. About a month ago, Mr Elawadhi’s agency also set a record house price for Tarneit, after selling a five-bedroom house at 3 Sterling Mews for $1.13 million.

Crop growers to be deported A father and son have appeared in court after police seized 622 cannabis plants from houses in Point Cook and Williams Landing last year. Qui Nguyen, 54, and Quan Nguyen, 24, faced the County Court last month where they pleaded guilty to cultivating a commercial quantity of cannabis. The court heard that in June 2017, police searched a house in Caldwell Road, Williams Landing, where they arrested Quan and his sister Quin Nguyen. Police found 50 semi-mature cannabis plants under cultivation at the house. After police reviewed Quan and Quin’s mobile phones, they searched five other addresses in Point Cook. Police found 69 plants at a house in Dunnings Road, 76 plants at a Florey Avenue house, 140 plants at a Marble Road house, 136 plants at a Santander Crescent house and 151 plants at a Freshet Avenue house. Judge Mark Dean sentenced Qui to six years jail, with a minimum term of three years and nine months. Quan was sentenced to two years and three months jail. He must serve a minimum of nine months before he will be eligible for parole. Justice Dean said both father and son would be deported after serving their sentences. Quin was previously charged with possession of cannabis. She recently faced a magistrates’ court and was sentenced to 100 days’ imprisonment.

Park under the spotlight By Charlene Macaulay An $11.4 million redevelopment of Wyndham Park is closer to fruition after Wyndham council approved concept design plans for the site. Under the plans, Werribee’s CBD could become the Southbank of the west, with Wyndham Park and the Werribee River playing centre stage. The final concept design for the redevelopment includes: • A central lawn that could fit up to 5000 people for markets, festivals, performances, informal ball games and other social sports; • Picnic facilities, including barbecues, tables, chairs and shade structures; • A nature trail and fitness loop for walkers, runners and cyclists;

• A playground featuring an “iconic” play tower, giant slide, spinning equipment, double flying fox, adventure rope course and swings; • An access bridge with terraced seating steps and a mobile cafe; and • Lighting and toilets. The $11.4 million project is jointly funded by Wyndham council ($8.2 million) and the state government ($3.2 million). The concept plans will now move to a detailed design development stage, with the entire project expected to be finished by November 2019.
Councillor Mia Shaw said this project would build on an under-utilised area to activate Werribee’s CBD and improve safety. “This is a real game changer for our city centre, and for all Wyndham residents,” she said. “The transformation of our city centre will not be liveable or family friendly unless we harness and improve the opportunities provided by nearby open space and recreation assets. These include Wyndham Park and nearby Chirnside Park. “The Wyndham Park redevelopment will be looked back upon as a key city-shaping project. “We only have to see how successful the recent pop-up park was in Station Place, as well as Australia Day activities and the Winter Festival to know that people in our city want and need these types of spaces and events.”

Jobs tick for Tarneit, Truganina By Alesha Capone An index ranking the liveability of Melbourne suburbs has given Tarneit and Truganina high scores for employment opportunities, but has found that the west has overall low accessibility to entertainment, parks and recreation resources. The CityPluse index from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) last week revealed the top 10 places in Melbourne in the categories of live, work and play.
In the work section of the index, Truganina placed sixth and Tarneit equal eighth (with Richmond) based on a fast-expanding industry of distribution and logistics hubs that are providing job opportunities. The work section of the index was topped by Docklands. As part of its liveability index, PwC also released a report into Melbourne’s western suburbs that maintains there is “a distinct lack of play for most areas in the west”. The report says that although there are
some great facilities in the west – such as the Substation Centre for Arts and Culture in Newport, the Wyndham Cultural Centre and Werribee Zoo – population growth meant more options were needed in the play category. “Perhaps most starkly revealing for the west is its comparatively lower access to open areas, with the northern and eastern suburbs having significantly higher access to parks, gardens and ovals,” the report states. PwC economics and policy partner James van Smeerdijk said that as the west continued
to grow, residents would look for more accessibility to entertainment, culture and open spaces to complement their strong access to jobs. “As creativity becomes an increasingly important driver of our economy, we will see the positive impact of more ‘play’ flow through to the attraction of knowledge workers and the growth of advanced industries that will ultimately create quality sustainable jobs for more Melburnians,” Mr van Smeerdijk said.
Good to go for Good Friday It’s time to give so they may grow. Truganina Fire Brigade will be tin rattling and door knocking later this month to raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal. The brigade has raised more than $135,000 since it started collecting in 2004. Truganina captain Colleen Goodfellow said volunteers would be tin rattling at Tarneit Central Shopping Centre on Thursday, March 29 before taking to the streets on Good Friday with the fire trucks to door knock homes and tin rattle at major road intersections. Appeal organiser Leigh Tomlinson added: “I really enjoy helping out such a wonderful cause”. The brigade is looking for more volunteers to help out on the day. HOPPERS CROSSING VETERINARY CLINIC & HOSPITAL Wyndham Star article by Dr Kristi Green March 2018 Solving the puzzle of seizures in Pets Seizures are a disturbing but relatively common condition in pet dogs but are rarely seen in cats. A seizure is extremely distressing for both pets and their owners and veterinary attention should be sought immediately. Episodes may range from a few seconds of tremors or disorientation through to a longer period of loss of consciousness and paddling of limbs. The prolonged or “grand mal” type of seizure can cause the body temperature to rise and lead to brain and organ damage. Immediate veterinary treatment with sedatives and anti-seizure drugs is needed if the episode doesn’t quickly stop. There are many causes of seizures to consider based on the pets breed, age and examination. The vet will perform blood tests to rule out low blood sugar, liver or kidney failure and severe blood disorders. Young and inquisitive pets may have ingested dangerous toxins such as snail bait or garbage. Female dogs feeding puppies can develop low blood calcium levels and seizures known as “milk fever”. Elderly pets with a sudden onset of seizures could have a brain lesion and may need referral to a veterinary specialist for an MRI or CT scan of the brain.

Indoor cricket for kids
If blood screening tests are normal and a brain lesion is considered unlikely the vet may make a presumptive diagnosis of epilepsy. Epilepsy typically affects younger dogs aged 1 to 5 years and occurs in numerous breeds including poodles, beagles and border collies. The good news is that most epileptic dogs are well managed with daily anti-seizure medications and regular monitoring. If you suspect your pet has had a seizure don’t hesitate to contact your vet immediately.

Howzat! Hoppers Indoor Sportz and the Western Region Junior Cricket Association have teamed up to launch an indoor cricket competition for youngsters. The competition will run during term two and three of this year. Hoppers Indoor Sportz owner John Almond said they would be hosting a free come and try day on April 8. Mr Almond said the cricket competition would be open to both boys and girls, and that organisers were hoping to have eight teams in each grade for under-11, under-13s and under-15s. He said that young people from across Wyndham, Altona and Melton were welcome to sign up for the cricket program.
“I’m looking forward to is just seeing the kids play all year round and having fun,” he said. Mr Almond said he wanted to arrange for the indoor teams to play against other centres, in country championships and in representative cricket. “I used to drive the kids to Geelong for indoor cricket and I basically said, ‘We have to get this in Hoppers Crossing, there is no reason why we can’t’,” he said. New sporting hub ready to open By Alesha Capone Here’s your first glimpse into the $11.75 million redevelopment which is transforming the Chirnside Park Hub into a state-of-the-art sports facility. Work on the project began in September 2016 and is due to finish today (March 14). The redevelopment has been funded by Wyndham council, the Werribee Football Club, the AFL, AFL Victoria, the state government and the federal government. Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard said the new hub included a pavilion, facilities for women’s football, a new grandstand, a commercial kitchen and kiosk, a multi-purpose social meeting room, community spaces and improved car parking. “The North Melbourne Football Club will be able to deliver programs from this new facility with The Huddle, while it will also be a base for AFL and cricket pathway programs and … host finals and other major sporting events,” Cr Maynard said. “I’m sure the Werribee Football Club and the Werribee Cricket Club will be proud to call Chirnside Park home, while it will also serve as a fantastic hub for the entire community in the heart of Werribee.” Werribee Football Club chief executive Mark Penaluna said the new building was about 2200 square metres, almost double the size of the former building. “It’s now much more family-friendly and player-friendly,” he said. Mr Penaluna said the new facilities were among the best in the VFL and included gymnasiums, spa facilities, a warm-up area, doctors’ rooms, training rooms, a coaches’ address room, showers and lockers. FC colours. The front of the pavilion has 498 seats overlooking the oval. A function room, which can seat 180 people, will be available for community use and event hire. On March 24, Werribee will play Essendon in a practice game at the new hub. Three TAC Cup women’s matches will be held on March 25 and the VFL men’s and women’s season launch will be hosted at the ground on March 28. The first VFL game at the new hub will be held on April 14, when Werribee plays Casey.

Online music show a hit

Australia’s newest online music show, which is made in Point Cook, is hitting all the right notes. The liveformusic.tv show is put together by volunteers, including presenters Claire Auden and Nathan Scutti, and producer Tim Butler, who also acts as cameraman and editor. In each web-isode, which runs for about 10 minutes, Ms Auden and Mr Scutti interview a music artist. Ms Auden also writes and presents music news and a music video review. Mr Butler said the show, which started in November last year, was filmed on Sunday afternoons. “I was always fascinated by Countdown, we haven’t had anything like that for years,” he said.

Fraudster loses jail term appeal By Goya Dmytryshchak A man who used fake identities and swindled more than $250,000 in bank loans and property has lost an appeal to reduce his three year minimum jail term. Jake Matthew Friel in 2016 was sentenced to four years and four months’ prison with a non parole-period of three years after pleading guilty to more than 20 deception-related charges. The sentencing judge found 26-year-old Friel’s crimes were motivated by ice abuse and a need to repay drug debts to people “euphemistically described as … motorcycle enthusiasts”. The offences included crimes at Altona North, Caroline Springs, Wyndham Vale, Caroline Springs and Sydenham. The Supreme Court this month rejected Friel’s appeal that his sentence was manifestly excessive. The court heard the total amount of property he obtained by deception was more than $256,000 while the total amount Friel tried to obtain was more than $409,000. Aside from a Mercedes Benz, no other property was recovered. Most of Friel’s crimes happened in an 11-week spree from November 2015. His crimes included using stolen identity documents to buy more than $5000 jewellery from Michael Hill jewellers at Pacific Werribee, including a wedding band. Using a false driver’s licence in another man’s name, Friel opened an account at Hoppers
Crossing ANZ, taking out a $30,000 loan and receiving $27,000 cash. He opened another account at Werribee ANZ with the same fake licence and received a further $27,000. Police caught Friel running a red light in a BMW at Point Cook and discovered his licence was fake. A search of his coupe found four more driver’s licences. He was arrested and bailed in December, 2015. While on bail, he used a fake licence to open another account at Wyndham Vale ANZ. However, his attempts to obtain more loans would start to fail. After his application for a $28,000 loan was rejected, he tried in a different name and was again refused at Caroline Springs ANZ. The court heard Friel had another failed attempt at Watergardens ANZ, before switching to a different modus operandi. On February 5, 2016, Friel applied for an online loan for $57,000 with ANZ before attending the Altona North branch, but was unsuccessful. He returned to the same bank three days later to apply for a $30,000 loan. When he returned to the bank to finalise the loan, he was arrested. The court of appeal judges in their ruling comments said although Friel pleaded guilty at an early stage, his sentence was appropriate. “The offending was of a serious and repeated nature, and would have continued if Friel had not been arrested and charged,” Justice Kim Hargrave said.

Don’t be blind to safety Did you know that a driver’s blind spot can stretch as far as 15 metres when reversing? Wyndham council has partnered with Kidsafe Victoria to warn drivers about the dangers of low speed run-over accidents, particularly in home driveways. The two organisations are calling on drivers to adopt a “supervise, separate and see” approach to reduce the likelihood of children being run over by cars backing out of a driveway. On average, seven children under the age of 14 are killed in Australia in these types of accidents each year, and 60 are seriously injured. Most of these incidents occur in the driveway of the child’s own home, or in a friend or
relative’s driveway, with a parent or loved one behind the wheel. Kidsafe general manager Jason Chambers said even cars fitted with parking sensors and reversing cameras may not pick up a little one behind a car until is it too late. Wyndham council family friendly portfolio holder Mia Shaw said children’s unpredictability placed them at increased risk around driveways. “All cars have large blind spots, some more than 15 metres,” Cr Shaw said. “Children’s small size, together with these large blind spots, means that children standing or stepping behind the vehicle often cannot be seen from the driver’s seat.”

Werribee is all set to get its own cancer support house – and you can thank these people for the project. A group of 30 cyclists and seven support crew took off from Werribee’s Riverwalk estate on Friday and will spend this week on a 1000-kilometre fundraising ride through Kyneton, Halls Gap and Hamilton before arriving at the Rotary District 9800 Conference in Warrnambool on Friday. The fundraiser has been organised by RoCan, a trust established through Williamstown Rotary Club to raise awareness of ovarian cancer and help with research into the cause and cure of the disease, and aims to raise $100,000. Organiser Yvonne Moon has spent the past 18 years championing RoCan after her
lifelong friend Anna Buckley died from ovarian cancer. She said a portion of the proceeds raised through the ride would go towards ovarian cancer research, and the rest towards the cancer support house. Late last year, the group purchased land at Riverwalk estate for the support house, but still need another $300,000 to get the project over the line. Carnival of culture Truganina South Primary School will host a carnival on March 23 to celebrate multiculturalism and community. The carnival, which will be themed Celebrating Cultures, Embracing Community, will mark the end of Cultural Diversity Week. The event is open to the public and activities include rides, market stalls and cultural performances. All the funds raised will go towards supporting student learning. Aviation bridge plan revealed By Goya Dmytryshchak Plans for a road bridge to replace the Aviation Road level crossing at Laverton were last week revealed by the state government, despite community concerns about it being “an eyesore”. It comes just weeks after Hobsons Bay council called for community input over the Level Crossing Removal Authority’s two preferred options: a road bridge over the rail lines or lowering Aviation Road under the lines. At its February 13 meeting the council passed a resolution to seek feedback from commuters and residents from Altona Meadows, Laverton,
Seabrook and beyond. However, Altona MP Jill Hennessy on Friday announced that work would start this year on a road bridge over the current crossing, walking and cycling paths, and a pedestrian underpass to Aircraft station. Ward councillor Colleen Gates said the council supported the removal of the level crossing after 20 years of lobbying but that there were concerns about a road bridge. “Our community has already expressed concerns that a road bridge will have an impact to the visual amenity of the area and therefore we remain very hopeful that the Level Crossing Removal Authority (LXRA) will

In 1986, The Banner published a story about a young Werribee apprentice named Mark Walker. At the time, Mr Walker – a third-year metal founding apprentice at the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation – had been selected to represent the state in the Australian Foundry Institute National Apprentice Competition. Fast forward more than three decades, and Mr Walker is now working for the Growth Steel Group, as a business development manager and south-east regional manager for growth. The Growth Steel Group supplies steel products around the world and has a foundry in Medan, North Sumatra. Mr Walker said he spends about 30 weeks a year travelling back and forth to Indonesia for his job, which involves helping the company improve its technology, safety and environment. “Since I’ve been with the company, we’ve updated the safety to Australian standards,” he said. “The best part is when I make a change and get to see the result, that’s job satisfaction.” After he was featured in The Banner, Mr Walker went on to become a senior technical officer for BTR Aerospace, then worked at Vaughan Castings and at Foseco Pty Ltd, as a state manager. He completed an MBA and volunteered as the Australian Foundry Institute secretary and vice-president for many years. He also married, and has three children – Amy, Blake and Tanya – with his wife Deborah. Mr Walker said if anyone had told him of his career success back in 1986 he would not have believed them. “I always did my best, as taught by my parents,” he said. “I treat everyone the same and be honest with everyone.”

MY WYNDHAM Rhonda Edwards is the co-ordinator of the Summer Fun Bowls Program at the Werribee Bowls Club, and her husband Gerry also volunteers at the club. They chat with Alesha Capone. Tell me about your connection to Wyndham. Mrs Edwards: We bought our first block of land in Hoppers Crossing in 1971. We’ve been married for 46 years. We found joining the bowls club gives us a common interest. I joined the bowls club so I could find my husband, he’s always either playing or fixing things here! What do you like most about Wyndham? Mrs Edwards: Everything’s at our fingertips. We don’t have to leave the area to go to the cinema, or go shopping. Wyndham council is also very supportive of us, they can see we are working really hard to provide another sport in the area.
Mrs Edwards: We are part of a whole team of volunteers down here. These guys put in an inordinate amount of time to keep a club like this running. I think it’s a very welcoming club and I think the people here are very friendly. Bowls itself is a great sport, for all ages, abilities and cultures and it can be played socially, competitively and individually. We’re getting more kids, people with a disability, people from various multicultural backgrounds and mothers involved, which is helping us with the transition from a bowls club into more of a community club, where everyone is welcome. Mr Edwards: There are about 70 to 80 volunteers here. We don’t have poker machines here, so we have to be looking for other ways

Werribee Shire Council is at present investigating the extent of the need for a Meals on Wheels service to the elderly population of Werribee and Laverton. After considering preliminary research on the need and cost of such a scheme, council resolved to call a meeting of interested organisations in order to obtain some hard facts on the actual need in the district.
Several Hoppers Crossing sporting groups and residents fear new hiring costs at a ball players centre could lead to junior basketball players dropping out of clubs and spending more time on the streets. Ten years after the community fought off a plan from the Kennett government to build a toxic dump in Werribee, a federal Liberal MP has nominated the Western Treatment Plant as a potential location for sediment from the Port Phillip Bay dredging project. The proposal was raised by the opposition spokesman on environment and urban water, Greg Hunt, who believes the plant could be used to store sediment generated through the channel deepening process.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds Mantra does the simple things well The location and setting of Mantra is a surprise and just right: In a light industrial conclave way over in the Yarraville back waters near Francis and Hyde streets. Inside, the warehouse has undergone a gorgeous cafe transformation. There’s lots of space, high ceilings and plenty of room to grow. Which makes me think that Mantra will continue evolving. In the meantime, there is food – very lovely food. The menu runs to breakfast items such as sweet corn fritters, breakfast ramen and jasmine rice pudding. Lunch choices range from a falafel burger to what sounds like a delectable salad of heirloom carrots, beetroot hummus, dukkah and sweet potato. CTS visits twice within a couple of days and has a swell time lunching. The service is cheerful and efficient and the wait times good. Visiting for reconnaissance purposes, I go with the wagyu burger with chilli relish, cos lettuce, tomato, bacon and fries ($24). Now, $24 is quite a lot to pay for a cafe burger in these parts. On the other hand, this is a terrific specimen of the burger art. Simplicity is a virtue here. It’s a two-fisted joy, juicy and with Middle Eastern seasoning. The chips are good, though those on the outer reaches of the mound are barely lukewarm and the rest could be hotter, too. For a return visit of the family Sunday lunch kind, Deb gets the same burger with an equally

I’ve already seen enough – and eaten enough – to rather wish the “poke bowl” fad fades away with some haste, seeing as it widely seems to be an excuse for slopping mediocre ingredients in a bowl and charging richly for it. The Mantra Bowl ($18), by contrast, shows how it should be done and how good such an offering can be. The ingredients are top-shelf and – just as importantly for this kind of meal – beautifully arranged in the bowl. Rice ’n’ black beans, crunchy pickled cabbage, several kinds of mushroom, bean sprouts, tender asparagus – and even a trans-national touch through brown baba ganoush and flatbread: All wonderful, alone and/or together. Bennie muchly enjoys his barbecue duck waffle with mango chutney, lychee gel and grilled asparagus ($23). The meat is juicy yet nicely chewy, though it seems to me his meal would benefit from a greater sauce/liquid component. He disagrees. Catholic Education Week 2018: Discovering New Horizons
School partnership forms building blocks of education The partnership between Thomas Carr College and four primary schools forms the foundations of a strong Catholic community in the Hoppers CrossingTarneit area. These “feeder” schools are St Peter Apostle, St James the Apostle, St Francis of Assisi Catholic and St Clare’s Catholic primary schools. Students have the opportunity to travel abroad and visit France, Italy and Japan and live in homestays with host families and engage in cultural immersion programs at host schools. This is also reciprocated at our college with homestays for international students throughout the year. Faith and Culture ‘You are the light of the world’ was one of the key themes explored by Bishop Terry Curtain at MacKillop College’s opening year mass celebrated on Thursday, February 8. The eucharist celebrated by Bishop Terry and concelebrated by Canonical Administrator Rev. Fr Albert Yogarajah PP and Fr Darien Sticklen and Fr Anil Mascarenhas set the tone for this school year. As a community, the Bishop challenged each of us to use our remarkable skills and talents to not only be the best people we can be, but also reach out to others and make a difference in the world in the example set by Mary MacKillop. To raise whole school awareness of our faith and culture we display potent symbols and artworks throughout our college buildings. SPORT Underdog Cats through to grand final Hoppers Crossing caused the shock of the Women’s Community Cricket north-west one-day season with a stunning eight-run win over minor premier Geelong in a semi-final at Belmont Common on Saturday. The underdog Cats got it together on the day to inflict a boilover on previously undefeated Geelong and grab a grand final berth. Hoppers Crossing won the toss and batted, cashing in on a favourable deck to make a competitive 143 in 38 overs. The Cats’ innings was kick-started by Kayla Koropeckyj, who made 32, her highest score since January. Koropeckyj featured in two 30-run partnerships – one with Taylah Steadman (14), the other with Shannon Wilde (nine), to lay a platform for a strong total. The middle order was strong for the Cats, too, with captain

Brianna Herman (19), Odette Lopez (28) and Madalyn Smith (23) all providing valuable runs. A lower-order collapse of 5-5 cost Hoppers Crossing two overs and an even bigger
score, but the runs they had scored proved sufficient. Geelong needed to score at a rate of 3.57 runs an over to win, but came up just short, finishing its allotted 40 overs on 5-135. All the credit goes to the Hoppers Crossing bowlers, who bowled tight lines most of the way. Smith was undoubtedly the pick of the Cats’ bowlers, taking 4-25 off 10 overs. Her bowling and late-innings contribution with the bat clearly made her the player of the match. Hoppers Crossing will face second-ranked Craigieburn in the grand final. IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ After 15 seasons my time as one of the radio team covering the WRFL matches is over. My weekends in football season have been frantic, juggling my time between the WRFL, Werribee Football Club and the Western Bulldogs, hosting lunches and pre-game entertainment and running and being part of the radio calling team. That is not a whinge – it was my decision and I loved the challenge. I love suburban footy and the people involved in it, they are the salt of the earth. I had planned to be involved this season in a slightly reduced capacity, but that was not to be. I will still follow the fortunes of all clubs and when time permits will definitely be at games around the west. I will also still be writing about suburban football in this column. I want to publicly thank the clubs and the club people because they are the reason I did it for so long. ■ The match day broadcasts will continue on WYN FM with some new faces and I wish them well. Over the 15 years there were some challenges both on and off air but everyone survived to tell the tales. Steve Thom was with me from day one until part-way through last year. Together we built a match day coverage that was as good as anything going in local footy. Our team has included some pretty impressive people over the years including Candice Wyatt (Network10) who got her first on-camera experience with us, doing after-match interviews for our TV show. Tony Schibeci called games for us before joining SEN. Edward Sadler – now a leading racing commentator in Hong Kong – called games for us, as did Tim James who went to SEN and has been a golf commentator for many years. Andrew Muscat – our stats king and the WRFL historian – started with us and now works for the Bulldogs. Finally, special thanks to Krume Sazdovski, a WYN FM volunteer who has been responsible for the technical set up for the last decade or more. What a trouper, what a tireless worker and a friend.
By Lance Jenkinson Seabrook has brushed aside the nerves and lived up to its favouritism tag with a comprehensive semi-final win over Gellibrand in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association west A1 at Bruce Comben Reserve at the weekend. The Saints were hot favourites after going through the home-and-away rounds undefeated, but captain-coach Leigh Edwards knows that high expectations come with pressure. “Being the team that’s meant to win, so to speak, you’re always a bit nervous,” Edwards said. “Especially after going 11-0 and not having lost a game all season. So I was very happy with the outcome.” Seabrook will go into the four-day grand final against second-ranked Grand United at Crofts Reserve in Altona North, starting on Saturday, as the favourite once again. The two sides met in the final regular season round, the Saints winning comfortably. United had to survive a scare in its semi-final, against
Williamstown Congs, moving through after a tie. United will be no pushover. It has lost two games all season, so a ripping finale is a strong likelihood. “We’ve been the two best teams all year, so bring it on,” Edwards said. “We both deserve to play off in the final and may the best team win. It’s going to be a fantastic game.” All facets of Seabrook’s game are peaking at the right end of the season. The Saints’ bowlers hardly put a foot wrong on Saturday, bowling Gellibrand out for 100. The most pleasing aspect for Edwards was the shared effort, with Matthew Rayner (3-26), Walgama Eranga (2-15), Vishva Weerakoon (2-19) and Hitesh Bavarva (2-21) all claiming multiple wickets. “It’s been the story for the whole year,” Edwards said. “We haven’t relied on one or two – everyone has really been contributing.” Edwards was full of praise for Rayner, a homegrown player.
“He’s a bloke who’s played his whole life for the club and he’s the one who’s pushing this whole charge,” Edwards said. “In warm-ups, he’s the one that’s leading the group and he takes it out on to the field. “He’s motivating us, he’s up and about the whole time. He just loves the game and is on top of the world at the moment.” Seabrook only had one or two hiccups en route to easily surpassing the target. The Saints finished on 3-160 before the captains agreed to call the game off. Eranga led the push towards victory with 45 before Mitchell Grubb had a bit of fun after the score was passed with 61 not out. Andrew Hodgart managed yet more red ink in a final, finishing with 32 not out. “We played a semi-final last year and he was not out after 60 overs,” Edwards said. “He was not out in the grand final after 90 overs. “He’s gone through 35 overs today and he’s not out again in this game. “You just can’t get that bloke out.”

Classy Bees break duck By Lance Jenkinson A midfield master class was the cornerstone for Werribee City as it broke through for its first win of the season in National Premier League 2 west at Galvin Park on Saturday evening. The Bees dominated possession and created plenty of chances on the back of stellar performances from midfielders Dion Paola and Brad Murray in a commanding 2-0 win over Ballarat City. Bees coach Sergio Sabbadini was thrilled his players reaped the rewards of their hard work, particularly after a luckless defeat to St Albans Saints six days prior that had left them rooted to the bottom of the ladder. “It’s good to get a win for the confidence of the team,” Sabbadini said. “Their preparation throughout the week and their warm up was really good.” Werribee City found the opening goal through Trevor Ssemakula just before half-time. He picked up a through ball, realised the Ballarat goalkeeper had come to meet the ball, rounded him and calmly slotted into an open net. The Bees found an insurance goal through Aki Machiyama in the 63rd minute following a set piece. Paola impressed the Werribee City fans with his gritty performance in the midfield. “He’s only a slight fella, but he holds his own and he’s really hard to get the ball off,” Sabbadini said. In FFA Cup, Jason Moody scored a double as Point Cook crushed South Springvale 3-0, Zachary Busuttil scored a 93rd minute winner for Truganina Hornets in a 1-0 victory over Essendon United and Hoppers Crossing advanced after a forfeit from Altona City, which refused to play on the artificial surface at Grange Reserve.

Werribee gets going at last Werribee came from behind to beat Williamstown by 15 points in its second Victorian Football League practice match in Geelong on Saturday. Williamstown charged to a 37-point quarter-time lead after six unanswered goals. Werribee answered with six straight goals of its own through the second and third quarters to set up a grandstand finish. Werribee overcame a 10-point three quarter-time deficit to kick away with a four goals to nil last quarter. Jade Cleeland and Josh Corbett led the way for Werribee with three goals apiece. Werribee coach John Lamont was pleased with his team’s effort after a slow start. “We need to be better organised and take more responsibility for winning the footy and then we just need to defend better,” he said.

AT A GLANCE
Mazda, under its Kodo “soul of motion� philosophy in which colour is a prime element of form, has splashed out on a new exotic exterior colour for its popular Mazda3. It follows the success of Soul Red Crystal in the top-selling CX-5 SUV. Since its debut, the colour has proven a fast favourite with customers, involving about 22 per cent of CX-5s sold. Unfortunately, our test vehicle, a Mazda3 Maxx hatchback, was blue, so lacked some of the “soul� imparted by the new hue. Not to worry. The mid-range model at $24,890, plus on-road costs, has much to offer. The Mazda3 range covers six models, all in hatchback and sedan, with two petrol engines and six-speed manual or automatic transmission. In a congested market, it takes more than keen pricing to climb above the crowd. Nobody knows this better than Mazda, so the design of the latest Mazda3 is hardly soulless. A new front grille adds a touch of aggression. Mazda tells us the lower positioning of the Mazda badge and number plate holder hint at a lower centre of gravity. So there. Mazda3 Maxx incorporates MZD Connect, which puts cabin occupants in touch with the internet and provides access to social networking services. Control is via a seven-inch full-colour touchscreen on the central dashboard and multi-function command controller. It offers Bluetooth hands-free phone operation, reception of short text messages, and internet radio such as Aha with access to more than 100,000 broadcasts from around the world. Also featured are DAB+ digital radio, Radio Data System program information and satellite navigation.

The 2.0-litre petrol engine with 114 kW of power and 200 Nm of torque is available on Neo, Maxx and Touring grades. The more powerful 2.5-litre petrol engine, with 138 kW of power and 250 Nm of torque, comes standard on SP25, GT and Astina. Smart city brake support-forward is now standard across the range, while Mazda3 Maxx and all grades above get SCBS-Reverse blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
Maximum power of 114 kW from the 2.0-litre motor turns up late in the rev range, at 6000rpm, so the Mazda3 Maxx is in no hurry to get off the mark. In fact, with the pedals symmetrically placed to the left and right of the driver’s centre line, and a hinged organ-type accelerator, driving is altogether an unhurried rather relaxed experience. The drive can be spiced up by the Skyactiv-Drive transmission, which enables the driver to move into Sport mode using the switch on the shift gate.
The new Mazda3 offers improved handling and ride comfort thanks to G-Vectoring Control that improves chassis balance by adjusting engine torque in response to steering inputs and optimising the vertical loading of each tyre. Fuel consumption of the 2.0-litre six-speed automatic hatchback on the combined urban/ highway cycle is a claimed 5.8 litres per 100 kilometres. The test car came up with 9.7 litres per 100 kilometres in town and 4.5 on the highway. The Maxx is well specced for the price, so it’s a matter of sitting down and working out the value for money. Alternatively, just pick the model you like the look of.
