A passion for helping By Alesha Capone Carmel Tom has been made an officer of the Order of Australia for her service to naval veterans. The Werribee resident said the letter about the OAM from the Governor General’s office was unexpected. “I walked from the kitchen to the front room shaking and a little bit teary,” she said. Ms Tom said she was not permitted to tell anyone she would receive the OAM until the honour was announced on Australia Day.

The OAM will officially be presented at a Government House ceremony later this year. Ms Tom joined the Royal Australian Navy at the age of 17 and served for three years before getting married. After her wedding, she joined the Royal Australian Navy Reserve, in which she still serves as a petty officer. She also volunteers in several roles, including as a navy representative on the Anzac Day Commemoration Council and as secretary of the Naval Association’s Victorian south-eastern sub-section. Ms Tom said she had always been passionate about helping others.

“I’ve got this thing – you’ve got to give back,” she said. Ms Tom served as media liaison officer for the INTERFET (International Force in East Timor) in 1999. Ms Tom said she was at a funeral in Altona when she received the call telling her to be on the next plane to Darwin. There, she was put in charge of supervising media accreditation, transport and administration at a time when more than 200 journalists were seeking entrance to Dili. “We would tell the media: ‘There was no water or food, be packed and be ready, whatever

you’re taking, make sure you can carry it’,” she said. During those three months, Ms Tom was on call 24/7 and dealt with organisations as varied as the Pentagon, the BBC and CNN. “That was a really interesting time,” she said. She also visited East Timor, seeing first-hand the devastation the country endured. After arriving back home, she was interviewed by the Werribee Banner Banner. “I always thought I had nothing,” she told the newspaper. “But it was the most humbling experience to go over there and see what nothing really is.”

First-home buyer boost Werribee first-home buyers could get a leg up under a new state government initiative that will help pay property deposits by providing up to a quarter of the purchase price. Under the scheme, the state government will help first-home buyers enter the property market earlier by reducing the amount of money they need for their deposits and home loans by paying up to 25 per cent of the property price. The scheme’s “proportional beneficial

interest” will only need to be paid back once the home loan has been paid or when the property has been sold. Wyndham will be one of 33 “priority areas” for eligible first-home buyers under the pilot program. First-home buyers must also be Australian citizens or permanent residents, be aged above 18 and have a gross taxable income of $75,000 for singles or $90,000 for couples. Applications will open in coming weeks, with the scheme only available to the first 400 first-home buyers who meet eligibility criteria. Acting treasurer Robin Scott said the pilot

program would help first-home buyers get their foot into the property market. “We’re delivering a range of housing affordability measures to help make the dream of home ownership a reality for thousands of Victorians,” Mr Scott said. “With its concentration of businesses and institutions and excellent transport links, the government recognises Werribee’s value as a major contributor to the Victorian economy,” a government spokesperson said. Lucky day for dumped kittens These tiny black kittens are already down on one of their nine lives. A resident found the four kittens dumped in a bin at a Tarneit park across from Secret Garden Way on January 21. The eight-week-old kittens were hot, dehydrated and panting heavily when animal rangers arrived and immediately received first-aid treatment at the Wyndham city pound. The kittens have been nursed back to health and are looking for their furr-ever homes. Cr Heather Marcus said it was lucky the kittens were found in time. “I think it’s fairly safe to say that they wouldn’t have lasted much longer,” Cr Marcus said. A new prison in Lara is expected to be one of the big-ticket items in the state’s 2018-19 budget. The state government last week announced it would buy land to “significantly expand” what it has dubbed the Lara Prison Precinct, which will also include the maximum-security Barwon Prison. The new prison would be roughly double the size of Barwon Prison, which has a capacity of about 450 prisoners. Corrections minister Gayle Tierney said further detail, including funding, would be included in the state budget. “We know that our investments in more police and tougher sentencing will result in more people behind bars – we’re planning for that growth now.” The announcement comes a year after the state government announced plans to build a $288 million high security youth detention centre in Werribee South. The location was changed to Wests Road, Werribee, following community backlash. Opposition leader Matthew Guy slammed the government for announcing a project with no funding and scant detail. “They couldn’t say when they will buy the land, exactly where the land will be, how much it will cost, when construction will start, when construction will finish, when it will open and exactly how many beds it will provide,” Mr Guy said. hat a difference a couple of months and an upcoming state election can make in the demeanour of the sitting candidate for Werribee. The once invisible member (donâ€™t mention the youth detention centre) is alive and well, and there he was in the hallowed pages of this paper last week under the heading â€˜Our community needs to be safeâ€? and with a head shot as well, for those who had forgotten what he looked like. The latter was to complete the transformation from invisibility. Off he went parlaying us with statistics that show how lazy, inept and deceitful the other side of politics are, but â€˜The Andrews Governmentâ€™ is the answer to all our problems and the saviour of the west. Letâ€™s just reset the BS detector, as it has gone into overdrive, and remind the Member for Werribee that the election is a long way off just yet, and if he drowns us all in you-know-what before then, we wonâ€™t be able to cast our vote. If the Member for Werribee lived in the actual electoral area he might have more credibility on this particular subject.

We all get how politics works â€“ we are good; they are bad, vote for us, end of story. Outside of a promise to mow my lawns, wash my car, pay my sonâ€™s school fees and synchronise the traffic lights to be green for me exclusively, I already know who is getting my vote on November 24. Mindless statistics, pork barrelling and name calling from either side is not going to change that either way. Werribee is a safe Labour seat and it will take something seismic to change that. The challenging candidates have had little to say so far on any subject, leaving it to the party hierarchy to set the agenda. I know it would be too much to ask for a dot point version of everyoneâ€™s platforms but the thought of the political version of â€œhe said, she saidâ€? is not very inviting. Chest thumping, finger pointing and knee-jerk reactions should be included in the Commonwealth Games program as we are about to see some gold medal performances in the coming months. What an avalanche of claptrap awaits us. â–

Police have appealed for information following the theft of fence panels from a Point Cook school. Eleven dark-coloured metal fence panels were allegedly stolen from Featherbrook P-9 College between January 19 and January 23. Police believe at least two people and a vehicle were required for the theft.

Crushing event for hoons

Eight vehicles confiscated from hoon drivers were crushed last week. Police officers from Taskforce Regarder, which investigates illegal hoon gatherings, seized the cars at hoon meetings held in Melbourneâ€™s south-east between November, 2015, and January, 2016. Among the cars destroyed was a Nissan sedan, which belonged to a 23-year-old man Williams Landing man who was charged with reckless conduct endangering serious injury. Police are investigating after a smash and grab at a Tarneit Road pharmacy on Sunday, January 21. According to police, the offenders reversed a silver Camry sedan through the south entry door of the shop about 6am. Police said three people, all wearing masks and gloves, stole bottles of perfume from the store.

Youth crime stats on the rise By Alesha Capone

Youth crimes recorded by police have risen in Wyndham across a 12-month period. Data from the Crime Statistics Agency (CSA) shows that between October, 2016, and September last year, Victoria Police made 645 arrests for crimes committed by offenders aged 10-17 in Wyndham compared to 628 arrests in the previous 12 months. A Victoria Police spokeswoman said although there were 645 arrests, that did not mean there were 645 individual offenders – but that a person arrested multiple times would be counted multiple times. Out of all the arrests in Wyndham during the October 2016-September 17 period, police recorded the offender’s country of birth as Australia 320 times (376 times in the previous period), New Zealand 88 times (109 previously), Sudan 55 times (58 previously) and Egypt 20 times (six previously). The news comes after Sudanese and South Sudanese representatives expressed concerns about their portrayal in the media. Richard Deng, from the South Sudanese Community Association of Victoria, said if the media publicised crimes committed by people of African appearance, many Australians automatically assumed the offenders were from a Sudanese or South Sudanese background. “There are 54 sovereign states in Africa and … not everyone who comes to Australia is from South Sudan,” he said. Last week the CSA issued a statement which said that there were 846 Sudanese-born offenders recorded in Victoria in the year to September 30, 2017. In comparison, there were 59,048 Australian-born offenders, 1826 New Zealanders, 1555 Indians, 1063 UK and Irish-born people and 920 Vietnamese.

Thieves have stolen $4000 worth of tools from a vehicle owned by a family business. Melissa Norris said that she and her husband Colin, who run Chux Electrical Services, were having lunch at Werribee Pacific when their ute was broken into between 1.30-3.30pm on Thursday, January 18. Ms Norris said their ute was parked upstairs near the centre’s Urban Diner and the car’s canopy window had been smashed. Mr Norris’ Milwaukee tool kit was stolen, along with a Foxtel satellite tester and a duffel bag of full of tools such as hammers and chisels. “When I got back to the truck, there was probably glass scattered around a five-metre radius,” Mr Norris said. Ms Norris said this was the second time their tools had been stolen. In August 2015, tools were also stolen from their car, which was parked outside their home. Ms Norris said she and her husband were able to return to work after the latest theft thanks to fellow tradies and friends who loaned them tools. However, Mr Norris said he had spent $1100 replacing some tools. Ms Norris said she had been told there was no CCTV covering that section of car park. She said the family were hoping someone who saw or heard their ute getting broken into would contact police. Contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Wyndham council has redeveloped the park into a skate, BMX and scooter park, adding in a new playground, exercise areas, gardens and sheltered picnic and barbecue areas. Light change set to ease traffic By Alesha Capone and Timna Jacks (The Age Age) VicRoads will change the sequencing of traffic light signals at a Hoppers Crossing intersection, in a bid to reduce vehicles blocking the road. The roads authority has confirmed that it will modify traffic signalling at the Heaths Road and Morris Road intersection to “… reduce the likelihood of traffic queuing across the intersection”. This refers to drivers entering an intersection when it is full and becoming stranded when

the lights change, causing traffic to bank up. A VicRoads spokeswoman said that “queue detection” technology would also be installed at the Heaths Road and Morris Road site. The queue function will be available 24/7, but is only likely to operate during peak times. “Safety is our top priority in planning for and undertaking network improvements, including at intersections,” the spokeswoman said. VicRoads said it will also investigate changing traffic light signalling at three other Melbourne intersections, including Melbourne Road and The Avenue in Spotswood.

VicRoads journey services director Sameem Moslih, said drivers who blocked intersections could cause traffic congestion to worsen considerably. “Our whole system is so fine-tuned that even a car blocking an intersection for a few seconds can cause mayhem,” he said.

“It’s unfortunate that where individuals look for a way of easing their own pain, they are causing a great deal of pain for those people in their rearview mirror. “It’s not everyone who is doing this, people have different pain thresholds and it really goes back to underlying beliefs that people have, and some people believe that their time is more valuable than others’, which is unfortunate.” In 2015, a Wyndham council study found that 32,050 motorists travelled along Heaths Road, between Derrimut Road and Morris Road, every day.

Sharks of the pool These Wyndham City Sharks swimmers were queens of the pool at the recent Victorian Age Swimming Championships. Emmason McCurley, Caitlin Huell and Isabella Robinson – along with Sophia Potter – all won medals at the event, with Isabella taking out the 11 and under championship after winning gold in the 200-metres freestyle, silver in the 100-metres freestyle and bronze in the 100-metres backstroke and 200-metres individual medley. The 12-year-old started swimming competitively four years ago after taking part in a school competition and now trains four times a week in the pool, plus a weekly session of pilates, to get competition ready. Hoppers Crossing’s Emmason, 16, said it had been her best state titles to date. She bagged silver in the 200-metres backstroke and 200-metres individual medley and bronze in the 100-metres backstroke.

“Not only did I PB (personal best) in nearly everything, but I was able to medal in different strokes other than backstroke,,” she said. Caitlin said she hadn’t felt her best heading into the competition after netting a bronze at the Pacific School Games in Adelaide the week before. But she still managed to win the 200-metres butterfly and come second in the 100-metres butterfly. Caitlin and Emmason are gearing up for the Commonwealth Games selection trials. “I think it will be a really good experience for both of us, definitely with all the Olympians being there and the atmosphere,” Caitlin said. Sophia won silver in the 100-metres breaststroke. “With a 100 per cent PB rate, two finals and a silver medal, there is nothing more that I could’ve asked for,” she said. Charlene Macaulay

Fostering entrepreneurship and positioning Wyndham as a major tourism destination are the hallmarks of a Wyndham council plan to boost the region’s economic prospects. The council’s economic growth and visitor economy strategy stated that visitation growth has almost doubled (up 98 per cent) in Wyndham between 2008 and 2016, with 46 per cent of visitors coming to Wyndham to see friends and relatives. The report also found: • Werribee Open Range Zoo continues to be

Wyndham’s most visited tourism attraction, bringing in more than 600,000 people per year; • Wyndham reported $7.07 billion gross regional product in 2016, up 6 per cent over the previous two years. The strategy aims to develop and grow precincts that promote new jobs, foster entrepreneurship and innovation, grow the number of tourists staying overnight, promote Wyndham as a business and tourism destination and boost the number of major events held in the area. Wyndham council future focused economy portfolio holder, Walter Villagonzalo, said the

strategy focused on building on Wyndham’s economic strengths. “The relatively strong level of economic growth in Wyndham over the past 10 years has been underpinned by employment generated by traditional economy sectors, including manufacturing, retail and logistics,” Cr Villagonzalo said. “Initiatives currently being implemented include … an Innovation and Entrepreneurship Summit, the inaugural WYNnovation Summit, which will be held between February 27 and March 6, and the development of a targeted Investment Attraction Plan.”

Bush branches out for festival As far as alter-egos go, the birth of Constantina Bush was a momentous one. Her creator, Gurindji visual and performing artist, Kamahi Djordan King, had just met then-US secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice, when a phone call derailed the whole encounter. “I give her the painting and talk to her briefly, and my phone rings and I answer it and say ‘can you ring back, because I’m at a luncheon for that UN ambassador, Constantina Bush’. Everyone around was so quiet, and that’s how the name came about,” Mr King said. With her sequinned dresses, fake lashes and no-holds-barred humour, Constantina Bush has travelled around Australia with her cabaret troup, Constantina and the Bushettes, and this weekend will headline Wyndham council’s Park Lounge event, which is being run as part of the Midsumma Festival. “What I’m trying to do is get her to a point where she’s like a show girl and a female

impersonator like Barry Humphries and Dame Edna Everage – because he’s straight, nobody ever calls him a drag queen, but because I’m gay, they call me a drag queen, and I’m not a drag queen,” Mr King said. While Constantina lights up the stage, Mr King is busy presenting his latest exhibition, Shifting Elements and Camp Dogs, at the Wyndham Art Gallery. The exhibition will be on display until March 18. Park Lounge is at Kelly Park, Werribee, from 4pm on February 3, and is one of three events being held during the Midsumma Festival, which celebrates lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex culture. Hoppers Lane job done A $3 million upgrade of Hoppers Lane has been completed. A third lane has been added to the stretch of road between Sneydes Road and the Princes Freeway, while the existing two lanes have been resurfaced and wider shoulders added. The work was jointly funded by Wyndham council, VicRoads and the Victorian Planning Authority (VPA). Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard said the revamp would make a big difference to the 10,000 vehicles that travel along Hoppers Lane each day. “Adding a third lane has allowed for the construction of several right-turning lanes, including into Suzanne Cory High School and the Victoria University athletics track,

which will reduce congestion for drivers,” Cr Maynard said. “Extensions to the footpaths, upgraded pedestrian crossings, street lighting upgrades and improved bus stops will also make the road safer for pedestrians and public transport users.” Paul Byrne, from the VPA, said the extra lane was the final part of a $71 million state government roadworks package aimed at improving access to and around East Werribee. “East Werribee has enormous potential and these vital roadworks will help spur the area’s renewal,” Mr Byrne said. Call to fix old school site By Charlene Macaulay A Wyndham councillor is keen to see a prime piece of Werribee land put to community use. Mia Shaw is calling on both the state government and opposition to commit to both short-term and long-term plans for the former Glen Devon primary school site on Market Road. The school closed in 2010 and the buildings were extensively damaged by fire in late 2011. Cr Shaw said since then, the site had become an eyesore and attracted antisocial behaviour, despite Wyndham council lobbying the education department to turn the land into a park or other community facility over the past six years.

New hours for car parking Wyndham council has slashed the time limit on a number of four-hour carparking spaces in Werribeeâ€™s CBD in an attempt to redirect where city centre employees park. The council cut parking times for 42 parking spaces along the Synnot Street extension from four hours to two hours earlier this month, and also removed all-day business permit parking that had been allowed in 12 of those spaces. Wyndham council city economy director Kate Roffey said similar changes were made at the same time in the riverbank carpark, troup carpark and cultural centre carpark â€œto increase parking availabilityâ€?. â€œThis change was made because three-hour customer parking and all-day business permit parking is now provided at the Cherry Street carpark. The Cherry Street carpark contains 149 parking spaces and is located across the road from the Synnot Street extension,â€? Ms Roffey said. â€œConsultation with businesses and customers has informed us that two-hour and three-hour parking limits are the most useful for customers. â€œFour-hour spaces are often used by workers and business owners, making them unavailable for shoppers. MY WYNDHAM Gerry Greenwood has lived in Werribee since 1971. Along with his late wife, Betty, he was a founding member of the Werribee SES Unit (now known as the Wyndham SES Unit). He is a member of Wyndham council’s Community Resilience Working Group and served on the Weerama Festival committee for 26 years. He chats with Alesha Capone. How did the SES get started in Werribee? The Vic State Emergency Service was only seven years old when the Werribee SES started in 1982. After the Second World War and the Cold War, councils were encouraged to raise a civil defence unit in each municipality. In 1974, Hal Waters was appointed controller of the Werribee civil defence. He operated with no funding, no equipment, except for a black filing cabinet and a 6 x 4 trailer. In 1975, the Civil Defence Organisation changed its name to the State Emergency Service.

In 1980, Hal Waters resigned, so the late John Nicol – the then-shire engineer – was appointed controller of the Werribee SES. I was approached and asked if I would like to take over the role of deputy controller. I was a senior engineering officer with the Werribee council at that time. After a severe gas leak at a petro-chemical works, just across the border at Kororoit Creek Road, we reported to council that we should get an SES unit up and running ASAP. Council were agreeable to this, so I put an ad in the local paper – the Banner – saying that a public meeting would be held at the civic centre on the 27 May, 1982, to form a Vic State Emergency Service Werribee Unit. What roles have you held in the SES? I was a controller from 1982 to 1992 – nearly 10 years. It was terrific. Now I’m a trainer.

SV: I’ve become a bit of a fan of the Great British Bake Off. The laid back and friendly production style is great, and not having prizes at the end means it just has a really nice feel to it. My favourite TV food personality is Nigella Lawson. FB: What is your favourite food? SV: Pizza. Ask anyone who knows me. It’s an addiction, I tell ya! FB: What is your favourite drink? SV: I’m not much of a drinker really, and I enjoy the ribbing I get for the occasional light beer I might have. Favourite drink overall is chocolate milk. Also, I heard once that too much coffee is a bad thing ... I mean, seriously? FB: Which 5 people would you most like to invite to dinner? SV: My Dad Bert. He passed away in 2002. What I wouldn’t give to have one more day with him. FB: Do you have a kitchen tip for us? SV: Yep, and this one is really handy for the blokes out there, who, like me, tend to get themselves into a little kitchen trouble at times. The best way to remove that black, baked on, burnt gunk from the bottom of that pot you accidentally let boil dry (before your wife gets home and finds it) is: 1. Fill the bottom of the pan with a layer of water. 2. Add 1 cup of vinegar. As always, if you anyadd 2 tablespoons of baking soda. 4. Remove the pan from thehave heat and 5. Is there an old kitchen relic that brings back special memories for you? For me it’s a heart-shaped cake tin, given to my mum by her mother-in-law (Granny Pat) just after she married my dad. This tin was used for countless cakes throughout my childhood. My mum made her own birthday cake in it one year, and used a wooden skewer to scratch the number 38 in the icing. I found out years later it was actually her 40th birthday but she couldn’t bear the thought of anyone else finding out. On one occasion she forgot to grease the tin. This usually entailed smearing it with a great big wodge of Meadow Lea margarine to stop the cake from sticking (obviously baking paper wasn’t much of a thing back in the early 70s!) The cake ended up stuck to the pan – she was literally left with a broken heart! I used the same tin to bake a cake for my year 10 home eco project. Somebody knocked my elbow while I was adding the food colouring to my icing … instead of a pale lemon colour, it came out radioactive yellow. I was staying at my mum’s house this week and I stumbled across the heart-shaped tin. It must be more than 80 years old now. It seemed only fitting to make mum’s 83rd birthday cake in it. It was simple, it was pretty (thanks to the Dr Oetker sugar daisies I bought in the supermarket baking aisle) and it brought back some lovely memories.

SPORT Werribee keeps stepping up in finals bid Werribee is refusing to wave the white flag in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association. The Tigers keep delivering in cut-throat situations to maintain their mathematical chance of reaching the north-west first XI finals. For Tigers skipper Tim O’Brien and his teammates, this is familiar territory. “We were in the same position last year,” he said. “Every game is a final for us … if we drop one, we’re probably cooked.” Werribee’s form is getting stronger the longer the season goes on. The Tigers were superb in a five-wicket win on the road over finals contender Kew at Victoria Park on Saturday. Set a target of 213 for victory, the Tigers had a few early hiccups to be 3-56, but finished strongly for a relatively comfortable victory. Night watchman Jonathan Burton was the

surprise star with the bat for Werribee. Burton was put in late on day one to see the Tigers to stumps and did so brilliantly. But then he batted on into the second day to make 55. Burton is not a recognised run-scorer for the Tigers, having spent most of his first XI career as a tailender, but his significant batting improvement is starting to have an impact on the field of battle. “I spoke to him during the week, and said, ‘It’s a really good opportunity, you’ve been batting really well, so there’s no reason you why you can’t pick yourself up a good score here’,” O’Brien said. “He’s very positive and batted beautifully. He didn’t play any rash shots, just hit the ball when it was in the zone. It was a pretty mature innings.” Shaun Dean was the other stand-out for Werribee with 73 not out, as the Tigers finished

on 5/214. Dean has played many chanceless innings for Werribee over the years, but this was not one of them. “There was a couple of shouts with him, definitely a couple of close calls,” O’Brien said. Werribee will host Yarraville in a tantalising two-day game at Chirnside Park starting on Saturday. Meanwhile, Hoppers Crossing fought hard but was eventually chased down by Brunswick in a low-scoring thriller at Gillon Oval. The Cats went into the day confident they could defend 129, but the Wicks recovered from 7-74 to reach the target eight down. Brandon Diplock took 4-22 off 12.5 for the Cats. With their finals hopes dashed, Hoppers Crossing will be playing for pride on its trip to Preston on Saturday. Lance Jenkinson

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ Kevin Atkinson and Wayne Connor are not names that many Bulldogs supporters of the last few decades would be aware of, but last week both were very rightly made Life Members of the Western Bulldogs. Both men have given years of service to the club in the stats area of the football department. I still see them both at the past players and officials function at home games. The debate about premiership players receiving instant Life Membership is interesting, with Brian Lake the classic example of someone who won three premierships with Hawthorn but wants to be remembered as a Bulldogs Life Member and a Hawks premiership player. That seems right to me. Does Joel Hambling deserve to be a Bulldogs Life member (23 games, 1 premiership)? I think not. Well done to Kevin and Wayne and also Gary Kent, Easton Wood and Simon Dalrymple who were also honoured. ■ The Werribee Park Golf Club won’t be hosting the Legends Pro Am this year, having decided to channel the funds into the new members’ lounge extension. Last year the club underwrote the event and while it was a success, the board thought the funds best suited to something all members could enjoy. It will be interesting to see how golfers adapt to the proposed rule changes that are being trialled between now and next year. Most are aimed at speeding up the game and making some very convoluted rules more practical and easier to interpret (AFL football please note). It looks very sensible to me.

Hawks happy to be back By Lance Jenkinson Glen Orden has been on a rebuilding mission for the past 12 months in anticipation of a return to senior men’s football in the Western Region Football League. The Hawks will re-enter the competition through division 3, returning in better shape than when they had to pull out of the competition before last season. Hawks senior coach Phil Crea said the club was focused on building a top side through hard work and the development of young players. “We don’t want a quick fix and buy a premiership,” he said. “We want to develop players and pass on a bit of our experience to them and create a good young team.” Crea was thrilled to be offered the coaching position at Glen Orden. The 49-year-old from Werribee spent six seasons with the Hawks as a player and watched his two sons play at the club. 52 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ JANUARY 31, 2018

He wants to see the Hawks thrive in the long term and will leave no stone unturned to ensure he leaves the club in a much better place than he found it. “It was unexpected,” he said of his appointment. “Coaching a club with no players was a bit strange at the start, but full credit to the players that have put up their hands and signed up – because if it wasn’t for the players, I wouldn’t be coaching. “It’s just exciting rebuilding the club again. We’ll put in a good culture and make it an enjoyable place for people to be again.” The time out of the competition was both good and bad for Glen Orden. Off the field, it allowed the Hawks to balance the books, but on the field it cost them some key players who have not returned. “It gave the committee and [club president] Peter MacDonald a chance to get rid of a bit of the debt,” Crea said. “It did hurt us a little bit because we lost some players to other clubs that aren’t coming back.

“But we’re excited now. The proudest moment will definitely be when we get two sides out there.” With a team in the new WRFL women’s football competition, anticipated growth in the junior base and the intention to enter a team into the new WRFL netball competition, Glen Orden will serve families better than ever before. Just like the Hawthorn Hawks in the AFL, Crea wants Glen Orden to be known as the family club. “We want a good culture off the ground where you can bring your family down and everyone has a good time,” he said. “We want our partners and their kids to be able to come down and watch their other halves play. “That’s our goal – to be a family club and an enjoyable place to be.” Glen Orden will continue to welcome new players and sponsors right up until the start of the season in April.

Tigers’ hairy hero hopeful of a grand run in senior side The bearded one is back at Watton Street. Nathan Laracy – Werribee’s longest-serving player and the man with undoubtedly the club’s most extravagant beard – is preparing for a ninth season with the Victorian Football League club. Laracy will continue serving as a leader at the Tigers, his experience being needed more than ever as the club returns to stand-alone status after breaking away from alignment with North Melbourne. The veteran defender is thrilled with the Tigers’ decision to return to stand-alone status for the first time in his tenure with the club. “I’ve always looked forward to this day coming,” Laracy said. “Having our own side is what I’ve been looking forward to for the last nine years – just having our own team and being able to drive our own standards. “You really know where you’re at in this sort of group – the environment is just fantastic.”

The 28-year-old has been restricted to 32 senior VFL games due to injuries and a logjam of AFL stars returning to VFL level, but that could all be about to change. He is proven at VFL level, having taken out the Tigers’ player of the finals award in 2014. As captain of the development league team, Laracy was named best-and-fairest. A troublesome knee has been a constant hindrance, but he still managed to post 100 club games when his development league games are factored in. Recent surgery on his posterior cruciate ligament has Laracy hopeful of an injury-free 2018. “I had [my knee] done about three months ago now and it’s getting there,” he said. “It has its days where it pulls up sore, but I’m on track to run in a couple of weeks. Hopefully, it pulls up well and we can really try to push for round one.”

Werribee football operations manager Stuart Balloch has nothing but praise for Laracy’s dedication to the Werribee cause. Laracy could have walked away from the club citing limited senior opportunities, but he continued to put his best foot forward, producing high-standard football no matter what level he was playing. “It’s very rare that you have someone who will commit themselves to a program and continue while maybe not getting some level of opportunity,” Balloch said. “That shows a lot of character and determination. “Nathan has been dealt a pretty harsh hand with injury recently. Prior to that, he was probably our No.1 lockdown defender. “When he’s at full strength, he’s definitely in our best 22.” Lance Jenkinson

Cats hold on for T20 win

Saints set the standard By Lance Jenkinson Seabrook has been dominating the Victorian Turf Cricket Association west A1 and showed no signs of dropping off in a first day blitz against Footscray ANA at Angliss Reserve on Saturday. The Saints had to reach for the top shelf with their bowling to restrict ANA to just 164 – a total below par for the conditions. With 20 overs to bat late in the day, the Saints finished on 1-58 and well in control as they look for a win to maintain a firm grip on top spot in the competition. “It was a good day,” Saints skipper Leigh Edwards said. “I likened the ground at the start of the day to a 250 par score. “It’s a good wicket, probably one of the best batting wickets in the comp, and a quick outfield. “For us to keep them to 164 was a good outcome.” Seabrook’s strength all summer has been its ability to share the workload. The Saints bowling attack barely afforded ANA’s batsmen

any breathing space. Vishva Weerakoon set the tone, strangling the life out of ANA with 2-12 off 12 overs, including six maidens. Walgama Eranga was the chief destroyer with 3-52 off 15, while Matthew Rayner chipped in with 2-39 off 9.4 and Edwards took 1-3 off five. “The good thing this year is that no one is standing up and dominating, but everyone is chipping in and contributing,” Edwards said. “When you’re not worried about who’s coming out to face next or who you’re replacing in the attack, it makes my life a lot easier as the captain.” Seabrook was able to negotiate the last session with the bat nicely, leaving just 107 runs needed to win with nine wickets in hand. Eranga was the only batsman to depart, he scored 12 on the back of three fours. Jake Collins (22 not out) and Edwards (13 not out) combined to see out the day. Collins was praised by Edwards for his willingness to dig in. “He played really well and with great responsibility, so he definitely did the job for us, which was fantastic.”

Meanwhile, it was a rough day at the office for Bellbridge, who were bowled out for just 93 against Williamstown Congs at Gray Reserve. The Congs finished on 6-105 to wrap up first innings points on day one. All hope is not lost for Bellbridge though, who can aim for an ambitious outright result with a day still to play. In north west B1, Point Cook amassed 9-272 against Sunshine YCW at Saltwater Reserve. The top three in the order took charge for the Warriors with Brett Talbot (84), Brad Broughton (74 not out) and Harpreet Singh (46) playing the starring roles. Upinder Kumar provided a valuable late 30 not out for the Warriors. Wyndhamvale posted 9-178 in its clash with St Andrews Pascoe Vale at Cole Reserve. Timothy Wilkes was the pick of the Falcons batsmen with a patient 69 not out. In north west A1, Werribee Centrals appear to be coasting to victory against Pascoe Vale Hadfield at Galvin Park. The Centurions are 2-93 in reply to the visitors’ 143.

Hoppers Crossing held on for a famous victory by 17 runs over Melbourne University in a low-scoring Women’s Community Cricket Twenty20 north-west final at McAlister Oval on Sunday. The Cats must have feared the worst after compiling 9-88 off their 20 overs – their lowest score in this season’s competition. In what turned out to be a tough day to make runs, Cats captain Brianna Herman was able to manufacture a priceless 35 and opener Taylah Steadman contributed 22. The Cats’ middle and lower order were ineffective, but stuck around long enough to allow Herman to play her shots and get the scoreboard ticking over. It was always going to take Hoppers Crossing’s best efforts with the ball to defend such a small total. Enter Odette Lopez, who created pressure on the University top order from the outset. Lopez finished with 3-9 off her maximum four overs to get the Cats on their way. Kayla Koropeckyj finished off the job with 3-6 off four overs, including three maidens. Melbourne University was bowled out for just 71 in 14 overs, sparking celebrations in the Cats’ camp. New-look Levorg is all style By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring On sale here since June 2016, the Subaru Levorg received a facelift and upgrade in August 2017. It featured a revised front bumper and grille as well as suspension and brake enhancements. Hill hold, automatic wipers, steering responsive and dusk sensing headlights and smart rear view mirror were also added, though not all features were added to each model in the line-up. The biggest news was the introduction of an entry-level model with a smaller 1.6-litre engine to complement the 2.0-litre sold previously. Four models are now offered: Levorg 1.6 GT, 1.6 GT Premium, Levorg 2.0 GT-S, and 2.0 STI Sport. Our road test Subaru this week was on the new Levorg 1.6 GT. From the front the Levorg looks for all the world like a WRX thanks to its bold grille and bonnet scoop. Though the Australian importer says the Levorg is not a WRX station wagon we feel many potential buyers will regard it as one. The rear also looks great, being more hatch than wagon in appearance with some neat sculpted lines. The long, slim look is certainly a step away from old Impreza and Liberty wagons. The new 1.6-litre, the first of its kind to be used in an Australian Subaru, is a flat-four Boxer turbo-petrol unit. A continuously variable transmission with six manual overrides takes torque to all four wheels by way of Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel-drive system. While the 2.0-litre Levorgs have variable torque distribution, the 1.6 gets active torque split. Standard safety equipment on all models includes seven airbags; stability and traction control; ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist; and the third

generation of Subaru’s EyeSight driver assist system that includes adaptive cruise control, brake light recognition, lane departure warning, pre-collision braking assist and pre-collision steering assist. It even has ‘lead vehicle start alert’ for those too busy on their phones to notice the lights have turned green. However, I’m not sure this

should be listed as a safety feature – pandering to unsafe drivers is simply wrong. The 1.6 GT misses out on blind spot monitor, high beam assist, lane change assist and rear cross traffic alert. The latter is a valuable asset and we missed having it a couple of times during our week’s test when we seemed to spend a lot of time in carparks during the

Christmas period. Interior space is good with reasonable leg room in the back seat, there’s certainly enough space for children who haven’t yet reached full adult size. Luggage space is generally good, however the sleeker rear end will limit the carriage of large, boxy items. Style or substance? It’s an age-old debate and the choice is, of course, yours. The smallish 1.6-litre engine has plenty of punch and a lovely, lively feel that makes it a pleasure to punt along. We really did love its apparent happiness at being made to work long and hard. There’s some turbo lag but the ability of the CVT to pick from a virtually infinite number of ratios means the engine can send its best torque to all four wheels rapidly. There are six preset ratios within the CVT for manual changing through steering wheel mounted paddles should you feel the computer has got it wrong. Subaru Levorg has a slightly softer suspension than the others in the range as befits its grand touring intentions. Ride comfort and overall smoothness is impressive and we reckon this Japanese car is up with the European prestige wagons. Handling is sharp with excellent grip, precise turn and good feedback through the steering wheel. Fuel consumption was generally in the nine to 11 litres per hundred range around town, and in the eights on the open road. We feel the latter should be lower, but you do get plenty of performance from this turbo engine so perhaps we shouldn’t complain. Though Subaru is too modest to say so, we feel there’s little doubt the new Levorg is aimed at the more expensive German and British brands. With its combination of sophistication, dynamic ability, style and value it presents a compelling case.
