A simple challenge is having a huge ripple effect on those in need. Point Cook Lions has rallied the local community to donate one non-perishable item of food a week for 15 weeks as part of its second annual 15 Can Challenge. Members have packed more than 100 hampers to give out to families struggling this Christmas. Secretary Lin Calver, pictured, said the club had been overwhelmed by support, with residents, community groups, the local Business Network International chapter, Stella Maris Catholic Primary School and Wyndham Vale Primary School all chipping in. She said many of the hampers had already been distributed, going out to migrants, single-parent families, domestic violence victims and Genevieve’s Community Kitchen. “The community have been outstandingly generous,” she said. “There’s a very, very broad range of people that [the hampers] have gone out to. We really want to try and give a hand-up to these people.” Ms Calver said that in addition to the non-perishable items, the packages also included cheeky indulgences – such as chocolate, lollies and toys – to make Christmas that bit brighter for their recipients. Wyndham’s big crime dip Crime in Wyndham has fallen by more than 10 per cent in 12 months. Data from the state’s Crime Statistics Agency showed 14,021 crimes were reported in Wyndham up to September 2017, a 10.9 per cent drop from the 15,745 offences for the same time in 2016. Arson dropped from 147 to 91 offences, burglaries and break-and-enters were down from 1970 to 1511, theft reduced from 6132 to 4630 and property damage dropped from 1197 to 1101. On a suburb-by-suburb basis, Werribee recorded the most crimes with 4016 offences (4773 in 2016), followed by Hoppers Crossing with 3103 offences (3276), Point Cook on 1867 offences (2034), Tarneit at 1663 (1681) and Wyndham Vale with 1077 offences (1600). In comparison, there were 902 crimes reported in Truganina (1029 last year), 344 in Williams Landing (442 last year), 162 in Werribee South (210 last year) and 53 in Mount Cottrell (66 last year). The only two areas that recorded crime rises were Laverton North with 738 offences this year compared to 588 in 2016, and Little River with 217 offences (177 last year).

Wyndham’s police Inspector Marty Allison said crime statistics could sometimes be unpredictable, with no discernible patterns. “While the decrease in overall crime (in Wyndham) is promising and indicates that our methods of detecting and dealing with recidivist property offenders are effective, what this tells us about is that we still have to do some work around people-related crime,” Inspector Allison said. “We need to identify areas where people-related crime is occurring and we want to have a visible police presence in these areas to dissuade and prevent these offence from happening.”

Funding boost helps Wyndham projects grow Wyndham council has more than four million reasons to smile after receiving a state government funding boost. The government has pledged more than $4.4 million towards four Wyndham infrastructure projects as part of its $50 million Growing Suburbs Fund, which contributes to projects in Melbourne’s outer suburbs. Pledged is $1.9 million for a pavilion for the Williams Landing Reserve Integrated Sports and Community Hub, which is currently under construction. Once complete it will include two full-size ovals, six tennis courts (two of which
will also be suitable for netball), cricket nets and a playground. A further $1.215 million will go towards a new Truganina East Integrated Family Learning Centre that will provide early education and specialist support services for children and will be co-located within the new Truganina East P-9 school. There’s also $1.085 million to “transform” the Tarneit Community Learning Centre and $200,000 towards a Saltwater outdoor youth space. Mayor Peter Maynard said the council was

Doctor’s carpark plea A GP clinic is calling for three vehicle spaces in a public Werribee carpark to be reserved for its doctors. MyClinic Werribee Central has launched a petition asking Wyndham council to set aside three car spaces in the two-hour car park located at the corner of Synnot Street and Duncans Road. One of the clinic’s employees, Dr Adam Smith, said the doctors usually parked in the carpark, which has more than 100 spaces. But he and his colleagues had received several parking tickets from the council for over-staying the two hour limit.

He said it was difficult for the doctors to move their cars every two hours because they could not leave the clinic during a consultation with a patient. “I do skin cancer surgery and if I’m doing surgery, I can’t leave in the middle of it to move my car,” he said. He said that taking public transport to work was not an option, because he needed his car to visit patients. Dr Smith said he had written to the council about the parking issue and been told to leave his car in the Cherry Street area, about 500 metres away, where some parking spaces have a three-hour limit. But he said walking to and from the Cherry Street carpark to move his vehicle every few hours was still not an ideal solution. “The problem is, if someone comes in with chest pains, having a stroke or asthma trouble, I can’t be out walking around after changing my carpark,” he said. He said the council needed to investigate ways to provide more all-day carparks for people who worked in Werribee, especially

Just because it’s the silly season, doesn’t mean you can be silly behind the wheel. That’s the message from Westgate Highway Patrol, who will be out in force in a 24-day operation to reduce road trauma this Christmas and New Year period. Operation Roadwise, which started last Friday and will run until January 7, will include a number of police units on major arterials and speed cameras and booze buses across Wyndham. Sergeant Marty Wallace, from Westgate Highway Patrol, said in particular, police would be targeting drivers leaving end-of-year work functions. “During this road policing operation, Victoria Police will implement a strategically co-ordinated and tactically focused approach targeting the key contributing factors to road trauma – speed, alcohol and drug impairment, mobile phones, fatigue and [not wearing] seatbelts.” RoadSafe Westgate’s annual report stated that 15 people were killed on the west’s roads and 895 people were injured – including 214 seriously injured – in 910 road collisions across the Westgate division in 2016-17. TAC lead director of road safety, Samantha Cockfield, said drink-driving, speed and distractions were three of the major factors in Victorian road trauma. “Around 90 per cent of crashes involve some type of human error and reducing that is a great start to reducing the number of people being killed and seriously injured on our roads,” she said.

She said that from January 2 the council would provide all-day parking at its Cherry Street and West End carparks for employees of Werribee businesses with parking permits. “If you have a permit, you will be able to park all day without moving your vehicle,” she said.

Maternity aid improves service By Alesha Capone Werribee Mercy Hospital is piloting a unique tool which helps to provide more timely care for pregnant and postpartum women. In March, the Obstetric Triage Decision Aid was launched in a pilot program at Werribee Mercy’s Emergency Department (ED) and the Maternity Assessment Unit (MAU). Funded by Better Care Victoria, the aid – an Australian First – was developed by the Mercy Hospital for Women Emergency Department. Midwife-nurse unit manager of the Mercy Hospital for Women ED, Mary McCarthy, led the project.
Ms McCarthy said the aim of the tool was to improve health outcomes for mothers and babies who required emergency care. “Basically what we’re doing is working out who is urgent and how quickly they need to be seen, to reduce the clinical risk to mothers and their babies,� Ms McCarthy says. Ms McCarthy said she hoped to eventually make the obstetric triage aid available to emergency departments and maternity services across the state. She said that hospitals traditionally used the Australasian Triage Scale to assess everyone who presented at an ED, but that this scale did not always reflect the urgency with which a
pregnant, or recently pregnant woman, needed to be seen. Ms McCarthy said the Werribee Mercy MAU monitored women who were more than 20 weeks pregnant and experiencing pregnancy-related concerns. The MAU sees about 8500 patients each year. Ms McCarthy said before the Obstetric Triage Decision Aid was introduced at the MAU, 43 per cent of women were triaged within 15 minutes. As of September this year, 73 per cent of women were triaged within 15 minutes, thanks to the new triage tool. “We are very pleased with these results,� Ms McCarthy said.

Charity work in focus Ms Boulos and 11 other volunteers spent a week in Sri Lanka, conducting eye tests and giving glasses to people unable to access, or afford, them. “The trip was amazing, it was really, really good,� Ms Boulos said. “We saw more than 2000 patients and gave out more than 2500 pairs of glasses. “What surprised me most was how patient people were. There were big lines and they had to wait hours to see us, but everyone was so grateful and patient.� The trip was organised by Global Hand Charity, the University of Melbourne, Acacia Prison in Western Australia (where recycled spectacles are reconditioned) and the Rotary Clubs of Sri Lanka. Point Cook optometrist Marlene Boulos is not used to seeing her patients burst into tears of happiness. But this happened earlier this month, when she travelled to Sri Lanka with a group of volunteers to conduct an eye-care outreach program in remote villages. Ms Boulos said she and the other volunteers met a Sri Lankan woman who could not see very well and could not afford to buy glasses. “We tested her eyes and gave her glasses, she was so grateful,� Ms Boulos said. “She burst into tears and it just made it all worth it, for us.� Ms Boulos, 23, graduated from university last year and works at Specsavers in Point Cook. She decided to join the trip to Sri Lanka after seeing a Facebook post by the Global Hand Charity organisation calling for volunteers.

Little gift, a big difference While many people are buying up big for Christmas, others wonder where they’re going to get their next meal. Uniting Wyndham is calling on locals to dig deep and donate non-perishable food for its annual Food for Families appeal to help families doing it tough. Demand for emergency relief from Uniting Wyndham in December almost doubles from 250 in other months to about 400, with single parents in particular struggling. Uniting chief executive Paul Linossier said rising living costs and a lack of affordable housing drove increased demand for help. “That’s why we need to collect more food than ever before, to ensure we can provide this essential lifeline for every single person
that comes to us for help,” Mr Linossier said. “Donating something as simple as two-minute noodles, which we ran out of months ago, can have a big impact. People sleeping rough find them invaluable as they can be filled with hot water from petrol stations.” Werribee volunteer Susanne is doing her bit by helping to pack care parcels with the food donated. Kevin Hillier bids farewell to an eventful year
I
feel like I say this every December, but … where did 2017 go? This has been a most interesting year, one that will never be described as dull. The community united to oppose the location of the youth detention centre in a way not seen since the infamous toxic dump in the mid-’90s. This galvanised the majority of residents and even saw some political battlelines temporarily erased for the good of the City of Wyndham. Tim Pallas was the centre of local angst as he appeared to forsake his constituents in favour of the party line. Whether this will have long-term damage to his chances in the next election remains to be seen. I strongly doubt he will suffer a massive voter backlash, though I suspect his opponents will use his performance in this matter as election fodder. I was glad to see our council stand firm and Henry Barlow showed real leadership and commitment. The council has finished the year on a
low, with a frivolous campaign to have two deputy mayors being driven by a majority of the councillors. I have yet to see a logical or practical reason why this is being suggested, let alone why so much time and energy is being wasted on it. Public consultation is being sought and if the council decides to take the next step, even more public consultation will be necessary. Why and at what cost? Those in favour point out the councillors involved would not get paid more. So it’s a non-paying, needless position? I would swear this was being run by groups that want local councils abolished.

Five men were arrested following an armed robbery at a Hoppers Crossing convenience store, just before 1.30am last Thursday. Police said they believe four men, aged in their teens and early 20s, entered the Morris Road premises armed with a machete and sword, while a fifth waited in a getaway car. The men allegedly threatened staff and stole cash and cigarettes before fleeing the scene by car. They were arrested in Sunshine a short time later.
EPA fines business
The Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) has fined a Laverton North business $7929 for installing equipment without seeking approval. Chemical container manufacturer and reconditioner Schutz Australia was fined after constructing a shed to house its new distillation unit without asking the EPA for permission. The EPA became aware of the shed when it was mentioned in an application the company lodged for approval to accept full containers of liquid from interstate.

Council awaits overhaul of act By Charlene Macaulay One deputy mayor and the introduction of a public gift register for all Victorian councils are proposed in a Local Government Act overhaul. The draft bill, which was released last week, also proposes that preferential voting be kept in place for the 2020 election, which has been earmarked for October 24. Local Government Minister Marlene Kairouz said the draft bill outlined consistent voting methods for council elections across
the state and would give councils and the government stronger powers to deal with individual councillors. The draft bill, which is out for public consultation until February 23, is expected to go before Parliament in mid-2018 and, if approved, will succeed the Local Government Act 1989. Wyndham council chief executive Kelly Grigsby said last week the council was not yet in a position to comment on the proposed changes.
“Council will be making a submission to the Victorian government about the bill and it is expected that this will be considered at the ordinary council meeting being held on February 6,” she said. Star Weekly asked the council if it would abandon its plans to review the deputy mayor position in light of the proposed reforms, which outline the role of the deputy mayor as a single councillor. The council is reviewing its local laws with a view to allow for the election of two deputy mayors.
Ms Grigsby said the council was “not in a position to speculate on the impact of future legislation until the full details are known”. Victorian Local Governance Association chief executive Kathryn Arndt welcomed the proposed changes, but said that in the future the state government should undertake extensive consultation on policies that impact council operations, citing the impact rate-capping had had on councils. Cub club in party mode Four lion cubs had a roaring good time when they celebrated their first birthday at Werribee Open Range Zoo last Wednesday. The cubs – Ndidi, Aziza, Zuberi and Kibibi – were presented with a lion-friendly birthday cake and pinatas to play with. The foursome, two males and two females, are the second lion litter to be born at the zoo, and the first for their mother Nairibi and father Johari. Zookeeper Katherine Quinn said that as the cubs were older, they had taken on the role of mentoring their four-month-old half brothers and sisters, Asali, Ilola, Ato and Lwazi. “It’s quite incredible to see how much they’ve grown and developed during the last 12 months,” Ms Quinn said. She said the one-year-old cubs weighed between 60 and 80 kilograms. “It’s been so special to be able to care for these cubs and for the rest of the pride as they grow and develop,” Ms Quinn said. “Aziza is
incredibly cuddly and she loves to snuggle with dad Johari, while Ndidi takes after his mum and is quite impatient, particularly when it comes to food. “Zuberi is the sweetheart of the group and he has a really gentle nature and Kibibi is the thinker … she adores the younger cubs.” Ms Quinn said that there were estimated to be only about 20,000 wild lions in the world, with their population under threat due to habitat loss. Wyndham schools cash splash By Alesha Capone More than $1.65 million in state government grants will be used to upgrade sport and performing arts facilities at two Wyndham schools. Werribee MP Tim Pallas made the announcement during a visit to Manor Lakes P-12 College and Werribee Secondary College last week. The grants will be part of the government’s $50 million Shared Facilities Fund (SFF), established last year to help build school
facilities that could be used by the wider community. Manor Lakes P-12 College will receive $935,000 to reconstruct its oval’s surface and install lighting and cricket nets. When the works are finished, Wyndham sports clubs will be able to use the grounds for training. The building works will be delivered by Wyndham council, in partnership with the college. Mr Pallas said $773,500 from the SFF would go towards upgrading Werribee
Secondary College’s performing arts space. He said Wyndham council would contribute an additional $50,000 to the project. Mr Pallas said the theatre makeover would include a raised stage, a dedicated space for technicians to operate audio visual equipment, refurbished seating, new lighting equipment, an additional mixer and audio equipment and cosmetic upgrades to the foyer. In addition to shows starring students, the new-look theatre will be available for community productions, including those
run by the Wyndham Theatre Company. Mr Pallas said the upgraded Werribee Secondary College theatre would be a “huge addition to the local community”. “Integrated school and community facilities play an important role in bringing together communities such as those at Werribee,” he said. “Shared projects promote better access to local services and opportunities for people to participate in these, as well as fostering a sense of community pride and value in our schools.”
Help for families in crisis A pilot program being run in Wyndham and Melton will help support families recovering from domestic violence. Keeping Safe Together has been funded by the Department of Health and Human Services and will help each family member individually, including the perpetrator of violence. Women’s Health West chief executive Dr Robyn Gregory said the year-long pilot program would provide “intensive therapeutic support” including one-on-one and family counselling, education on parenting and the impact of violence, hands-on practical support and referral to other services. Women’s Health West strategy, advocacy and community engagement director Elly Taylor said the program started taking referrals in November and was now working with several families. She said Wyndham and Melton were selected for the pilot because they had some of the
highest rates of family violence in the western Melbourne region. Between October last year and September this year, there were 2680 family violence incidents recorded by police in Wyndham, and 2055 recorded in Melton. Within the previous 12 months, these figures stood at 3012 incidents for Wyndham and 2055 for Melton. Ms Taylor said Keeping Safe Together had already received a high number of inquiries and referrals, but there was capacity for more. Women’s Health West and LifeWorks Relationship Counselling and Education Services are co-leading the project in partnership with other organisations including the Bouverie Centre, cohealth, Good Shepherd, CatholicCare and MacKillop Family Services. Council prefers a voting switch By Charlene Macaulay Wyndham council has called on the state government to introduce an optional preferential voting system for future council elections in a bid to curb informal votes and disincentives to voting. The council will write a letter to Local Government Minister Marlene Kairouz requesting the changes in response to a Local Government Investigations and Compliance investigation into the 2016 Wyndham council election.
The inspectorate’s report, which was handed down last month, identified 10 candidates who were considered to be non-genuine – or dummy – candidates due to unusual preference arrangements, dubious residential entitlements, no active campaigning or non-attendance of information sessions or training. Cr Josh Gillgan, who moved the motion, said the current system discouraged residents from voting, especially in council elections with high numbers of candidates. Currently, voters have to number all candidates on the ballot paper in the order

of their preference. Under the optional preferential voting model, voters can vote for one, some or all candidates. Cr Gilligan said that in some wards, more than 16 per cent of votes were considered ineligible. “Community confidence in elections is a key
component of democracy,” he said. “A system that discourages voters from participating by having to number every box – in the case of Chaffey ward, 35 [boxes], in Harrison it was 41 – correctly for their vote to be counted is a system that, in my view, needs to be reviewed. “There is a legitimate argument that perhaps, if we had an optional preferential voting system, it may have changed the election outcome in relation to some wards.” Councillor Mia Shaw said it was important a strong message was sent that what happened in 2016 would not happen in the 2020 election.
Every dad has his day A new project aimed at helping dads discover the joy of parenting is rolling out across the west. Recognising there are very few programs designed for fathers, Footscray early parenting centre Tweddle is trying to change that via the One Hundred Dads project. The not-for-profit organisation is seeking 100 businesses to each donate $1000 so 100 dads across Melbourne’s west can take part in the Working Out Dads Program. The Country Women’s Association of Footscray and The Seddon Bendigo Bank have both come on board as launch donors. Bank branch manager Ashley Coles, himself a new dad to daughter Penelope, said the bank was thrilled to get behind a community project with the potential to help so many families. “As a branch manager and a dad, I see a lot of families in the west making the transition to parenting, which we all know can be tough.”
Tweddle chief executive Jacquie O’Brien said projects such as One Hundred Dads are a tax-deductible way businesses and individuals can help create real change in their community. “Conclusive research confirms dads play a significant role in the social, cognitive, emotional and physical wellbeing of their children from infancy with lasting influences into their adult life, so donations also support the future of the west.” The first program for 10 dads will roll out at RecWest in West Footscray, with hopes of enough funding to support the program in Hobsons Bay, Brimbank, Melton, Moonee Valley and Wyndham as well. A wheel festive hoot By Alesha Capone Forget decking the halls – Bob and Gina Bates decorate their mobility scooters with festive ornaments, tinsel and reindeer ears each year, creating Christmas cheer wherever they go. The couple, who visit Pacific Werribee every day, have been doing up their scooters for the past eight years. “The kids love it, even their parents and elderly people like it,” Mrs Bates said. “They say ‘Merry Christmas’ and ‘Good one’.”
Mrs Bates and her husband often distribute free presents to children at Pacific Werribee in the lead-up to December 25. “When they have Father Christmas up there, we give them to kids in the line,” Mrs Bates said of the presents. Last Wednesday, she handed out 50 candy canes within two hours. Mrs Bates said that in previous years she had handcrafted bracelets and knitted balls for the children, but she had been unable to do so this year after breaking a wrist.
Mr Bates said he and his wife also decorated their scooters at Easter and Halloween. “Lots of cars honk at us when we’re on our way to Werribee Plaza,” he said. The couple, who celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary last week, have four children and 16 grandchildren, and are awaiting the birth of their seventh great-grandchild. Mr Bates, a keen writer and poet, has written many short stories to entertain the youngsters in their family.
Christmas is a time for giving, and The Park Hotel in Werribee did it in spades last week. The business joined forces with the Smith Family to put on a special lunch for 50 families of grade 6 Manor Lakes College pupils. The families receive education scholarships from the Smith Family. Young ones made the most of a petting zoo, photo booth and arts and crafts, while Santa also paid a visit, handing out gifts that had been donated by local businesses. The lunch was the brainchild of Park Hotel owner Connie Christou. Mrs Christou thanked the staff and suppliers for donating their time and resources for the lunch, and the businesses who chipped in with presents. “The kids had a ball, and that’s what it was all about,” Mrs Christou said. Motorists will see numerous Police units on our major arterial roads during this holiday period and speed cameras will be set up in identified speed and high collision locations throughout the State. Those planning to travel during this period can expect to see an increase in vehicles travelling on our major Freeways and Highways. Drivers should plan their trips, be patient and ensure that they have frequent breaks when driving long distances.

Make the ‘good’ list Forget Santa’s naughty or nice list – the Australian Red Cross Blood Service has its own list of life savers. The blood service has released its list of names of people most likely to be blood donors, with Jessica topping the list for the ladies in Wyndham and Michael topping the list for men. Rebeccas, Sarahs, Davids and Johns were also popular blood donor names, but blood service spokesman Leigh Johnston said regardless of your name, it was never too late to add your name to the list. Mr Johnston said more than 180 local donors would be needed between December 21 to January 3. “Cancer treatments, emergencies, and other serious medical conditions don’t stop
for Christmas,” he said. “We are asking new donors to roll up their sleeves and give blood at this critical time of year.” Werribee’s Michael Natoli, a long-time plasma giver, last Friday popped in to make his 58th donation. Mr Natoli said his dad used to regularly donate blood and he felt good about being able to help others. Jessica McConnell from Tarneit, who has been donating blood for the past year, said she really enjoyed getting messages following a donation that tell her where the blood had gone and what it had been used for. MY WYNDHAM Fiona Gray, from Hoppers Crossing, tells Alesha Capone why she loves working for Mercy Health in Werribee and what she loves about living in Wyndham. How long have you been with Mercy Health? I am a registered nurse, and I worked here at Werribee Mercy Hospital from 2005 to 2012, as a manager in one of the wards. Then I went to Western Health and was one of the key staff working to open the new Sunshine Hospital ICU (intensive care unit). In August last year I came back here (to Werribee Mercy Hospital) because I really love working for Mercy Health and I was excited about the opportunity to be involved with their expansion, including the new Critical Care Unit.
I’m the program director for medical, sub-cute and palliative care services. As program director, I oversee the provision of all these areas. My role isn’t just at Werribee Mercy Hospital. I’m also involved with the Mercy palliative care services in Sunshine, services at Mercy Hospital for Women in Heidelberg and two small sub-acute services in New South Wales. I probably spend about 75 per cent of my time working at Werribee. I work with different people – from the emergency department, medical wards, the Gabrielle Jennings Centre for Palliative Care, the renal dialysis unit and the Hospital in the Home program. I also work with sub-acute services including the geriatric evaluation and management and rehabilitation wards, and the Health Independence Program here at Werribee. I would classify my role as supporting the managers of those areas. What do you enjoy about working with Mercy Health?

What I like is working with the people here, an immensely dedicated team. It’s a good place to work and we’re expanding and trying to meet the community’s needs. people who live in Wyndham to work in our Critical Care Unit. What do you like about living in Wyndham? It’s central – everything is here. It’s a good place to live. I grew up in the eastern suburbs and moved here after I married my husband in 1989

Police raided a house in Hoppers Crossing last week and seized a small quantity of marijuana. A man was arrested at the house and proceedings will be taken on charges of possessing an illegal drug.
Hundreds of Werribee people, including people in the legal profession and big business, are set to lose large amounts of money in a game that offers players a 700 per cent return on their investment but rarely pays out. Called the “Golden Aeroplane” or “Aeroplane” game, sources told The Banner there could be hundreds of games in circulation around Werribee’s clubs, business houses and other places where large groups of people gather.
Protesters have called for the multinational giant CSR to compensate landowners if their properties fall within the buffer zone of the proposed toxic waste dump. The buffer zone distances became a key issue in the final days of the panel hearings, established to examine the impact of the proposal on Wyndham.
Police have called for public assistance in the hunt for an armed pair who terrorised two defenceless women at knife and gun-point during a late night attack. The ordeal unfolded about 12.30am on December 20 after the power was turned off at a residential home in Shaws Road, Werribee, apparently to lure the occupants outside.

At home now, if I get home in time from work, I tend to take over the kitchen and help my wife cook for our two children. FB: What is your signature dish? LL: A quinoa, chicken and fresh vegetable salad. FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? LL: Some fresh oysters, yabbies and salmon sashimi for entrée. When it comes to Christmas traditions, one thing I figured out pretty early in the piece is that my immediate family doesn’t ‘do’ fruitcake. And that includes me. For whatever reason, I’ve long baulked at the idea of sultanas, fruit peel and cherries in a cake. So in our house, it’s become something of a tradition for me to make a plain old chocolate cake for Christmas, because that’s what everyone asks for. Whether it be in the shape of a gingerbread house or circular and decorated with a holly design, the inside is always chocolate. My friends enjoy some less-ordinary Christmas food traditions: Jo eats pavlova for breakfast on Christmas morning; Karen’s grandmother served up trifle in the same crystal bowl every year; while Michelle’s Christmas food tradition is Boterkoek, a traditional Dutch slice: “My Oma always made it – a very rich and dense shortbread like butter cake. My family demolishes it in seconds,” she says. Lisa is the maker of “The ice cream maker comes out only at Christmas. The ice cream is always vanilla with different chocolate or lollies in it.”

SPORT Devils new coach has impressive CV Werribee Devils will enter a new era with freshly appointed coach Warren Estcourt at the helm. After an exhaustive interview process, the Devils offered Estcourt the coaching position of the men’s championship team, locking him away until at least the end of the 2019 season. Estcourt has vast experience coaching in Victorian basketball. He has driven Big V programs at state championship level teams Diamond Valley Eagles, Sherbrooke Suns and Bulleen Boomers. Estcourt clocked up five seasons each with the Eagles and the Suns. He has also been involved at the next level as an assistant coach with Dandenong Rangers in the Women’s National Basketball League. He played a key role in the Rangers 2012 national championship-winning team. “I am excited about the opportunity to lead the state championship men’s team at

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ From the outside, the life of a professional sportsperson looks very glamorous, but the harsh reality is it is a job. Many refer to AFL football as “the grind”. For a group of young men, that began a few weeks ago when they were drafted. The Inside the Kennel show last week introduced a couple of the new boys to supporters. Ed Richards and Aaron Naughton are fresh-faced 18 year-olds, while Hayden Crozier comes from a few years at Fremantle. Ed and “Naughty” are on a steep, physically demanding learning curve, though Aaron is yet to join main training with groin issues. Combining the excitement of a new job with school results, getting a drivers’ licence and the normal teenage stuff makes for an interesting life for the boys. ■ New players into the system always talk about the step up in physical demands from under-age football, but for rookie Callum Porter it was more than a wake-up call. The young man from Officer was a few teeth lighter after a mishap in a boxing session. Bulldogs veteran Liam Picken accidentally dislodged some of Callum’s pearly whites when his glove slipped off the punching bag and connected with the rookie’s jaw. Hardly just another day at the office. ■ There are big changes at the Williamstown Football Club with president Fred Hall stepping down last week for family and business reasons. Vice-president Michael Howlett has been appointed president, while former player Clint Rippon joins the board. Grant Dooley has stepped down due to an overseas business posting. The requirements of VFL football are exactly the same as those for AFL, but with a fraction of the staff. Board members give their time and that is a difficult balance with business and family. Both Fred and Grant have been on the board for five years and will no doubt remain key Seagull members. Football clubs are a bit like Hotel California – you can check out, but you can never leave.

The Tigers have brought in local youngsters Luke Hitch and Joshua Mould, who will become second-generation players at the Watton Street club. Both have been recruited out of the Western Jets program in the TAC Cup and have fathers who played for the Tigers during their football careers. Hitch’s father, Greg, who played reserves for Footscray, spent two seasons with Werribee in 1988-89. Mould’s father, Shaun, was at the Tigers at a similar time, playing under-19s and reserves over three seasons from 1988-90. Hitch arrives at Werribee with a reputation as a strong leader, even though he is just 18 years of age. The defender/inside midfielder co-captained the Jets this season and won the most courageous player award. He is looking forward to following in his father’s footsteps in pulling on the Tigers’ guernsey. 46 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ DECEMBER 20, 2017
“Dad finished his footy career off in the ’80s here, and he’s known a couple of blokes around here and is looking forward to me being a part of the club, so I hope I can live up to his name a bit,” Hitch said. “My time at the Jets was two seasons of me trying to play my best footy and now I’m lucky enough to be part of the VFL environment. “Obviously, it’s a challenge for me and I’m looking forward to it. “Whatever the highest challenge is, that’s what I’m going to go for … I’m going to keep striving to do the best I can.” Mould plays in similar positions to Hitch – through defence and midfield – but the 18-year-old’s style is more of an eye-catching run and carry. Injuries plagued Mould’s junior career – a broken foot and a broken toe were the major setbacks – but he bounced back in 2017 to feature in every game for the Jets and finish sixth in the club’s best-and-fairest count. He is fighting fit entering the Tigers’ pre-season. “I haven’t had any worries in the last six months, so I’m really happy to have it all
together and absolutely glad to be down here [at Werribee],” he said. “It’s a great opportunity for me, I’m a local boy from Wyndham Vale, so being so local [was appealing]. It makes things easy for me and my family and I’ve got a great support network down here.” Werribee has strengthened its connection with the Western Jets in recent times. The Tigers had a big intake of former Jets players last season. “We’re pretty excited to have two young Western Jets boys come into our program,” Werribee football operations manager Stuart Balloch said. “It’s a bit of a fairytale for both of these boys, who are following in their fathers’ footsteps. “Joshua had a few injuries, but played the full year last year and was a flexible player, and we feel he is going to develop well within our program. Luke was co-captain last year, is quite durable and is a small defender who can also go through the midfield. “We welcome both of these guys and we hope to continue our positive relationship with the Western Jets as a pathway for the talented player program.”

West’s star power shines through By Lance Jenkinson A special group of western suburbs athletes took to the stage to accept Don Deeble Sports Star monthly awards in 2017. There was a vast array of sports represented, be it indoors or outdoors, on the table, court or field. It showed that west is the best when it came to rising sporting talent. In February, we found the first of our 10 finalists, with para table tennis star Nathan Pellissier claiming the first monthly award. Pellissier is an inspirational athlete, not allowing cerebral palsy to hinder his progress in his chosen sport. A super determined person, Pellissier overcame a number of injury setbacks to bring down Rio Paralympian Barak Mizrachi and claim a national title. It is just one step in Pellissier’s quest to reach the 2020 Paralympics. Softballer Sam Reale was next cab off the rank in March. Incredibly, Reale was the only Victorian selected to represent the Aussie Steelers at the International Friendship Games, returning home with a gold medal. Also a talented baseballer, Reale has earned a sports scholarship for university in the US. April nominee Julia Bourke is another one of this Deeble class to earn a sports scholarship to

a US university in athletics for her excellence in the throwing events. Bourke did just about everything she could in her age group in Australia, thus wanting the challenge of overseas competition, where she will be tested to the maximum against talented throwers in the NCAA athletics system. It was a big year for soccer star Caitlin Greiser. She was a big part of South Melbourne’s all-conquering WNPL side. Our May winner represented Team Victoria and will be heading
to the US to take up a sports scholarship in Miami. The youngest of all monthly winners came in June in 14-year-old basketballer Paul Tsapatolis. The 205-centimetre starting centre of under-16 Vic Metro team is already fielding contract offers from Europe. The finalist with the steadiest hand has to go to shooter Thomas Armstrong. The July winner is one of Australia’s top shooting prospects. Teagan Newman is undoubtedly the top

The most high profile finalist was our September winner Cameron Rayner. He was a deserving No. 1 pick in the AFL National Draft and is seen as crucial to the Brisbane Lions rebuild in the AFL. The penultimate monthly winner in October was taekwondo star Tayla Eckley. Eckley is used to the fanfare having claimed more than 50 gold medals in the sport but it was her ability to translate her success from the local stage to national and Oceania competitions that earned her a Deeble nomination. The November entrant was the most versatile of sports stars in Monique Conti. Conti was not satisfied with being a star in just one sport, so she has ambitious plans to conquer two. She has landed contracts with the Melbourne Boomers in the WNBL and Western Bulldogs in the AFLW. The 2017 Don Deeble Sports Star will be announced at the annual awards at Allegra Function Venue in St Albans on January 31. The winner will take home $5000 and the runners up will receive $2500, all donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club. Bendigo Bank Strathmore has also donated a $1000 encouragement award.

Queenscliff/Point Lonsdale, one of the most iconic locations on the Bellarine Peninsula, offers sensational fishing for both boat and land-based anglers at the entrance to Port Phillip. You will be greeted with clean, fast-running water that holds some of the region’s most prized fish. Starting at Queenscliff Harbour, the main channel, or “Cut” as it is known, is the go-to location for pinkie snapper, silver trevally, pike, Australian salmon and King George whiting, just to name a few species that pass though. The trick to fishing the Cut and pretty much all of Queenscliff is working out the tides, as being located at the entrance to Port Phillip Bay means a very strong tidal influence. One of the most productive tide changes at the Cut occurs on the last of the incoming tide, when generally there is less sea grass and weed floating down the channel and the tidal flow lessens. The slower-moving water allows you to present baits or lure more effectively. Soft plastics have a proven track record in Queenscliff Harbour, resulting in large silver trevally, to 45cm, along with pinkie snapper. Rig your plastic on a 1/6oz jig head with a Gulp Turtleback worm in pumpkinseed and anything that swims will pretty much have a bite of your offering. If you need a hand picking out and matching jig head with soft plastics, call in and see the guys at Trelly’s Geelong/Laverton. Bait such as pilchard and pippie also works a treat in the Cut when rigged on a paternoster rig weighted with one to three ounces, depending on the tide.
Just round the corner is Queenscliff Pier, which is well known for its squid fishing. Casting out artificial jigs over the shallow grass beds will see you bank some inky monsters to 1.5kg. Floating a silver fish under a float is another proven squid tactic. Point Lonsdale Pier is literally at the entrance to the Bay and a prime location for trophy-sized fish. Most of the year, large Australian salmon to 3kg are caught from the pier, either on pilchard as bait or metal lures cast and retrieved. Australian salmon pound for pound are one of the hardest-fighting species you will encounter. If you have snapper on your mind, then this is the location for a trophy, along with some impressive whiting and squid. In fact, if you want to find the biggest fish getting around, head to Point Lonsdale Pier. The only catch? It’s not the easiest fishing at times, due to strong tides and limited space on the pier. Launching your boat from the well set-up boat ramp located at the end of Hesse Street, Queenscliff, and venturing out onto the grass beds located just to the east of the harbour, you will find yourself on sensational whiting ground. Here, King George whiting are in great numbers and the size of fish is remarkable. Pippie on a running sinker rig with a size 6 hook is all it takes to boat these beautiful eating fish. If you’re up for a challenge over the summer, chasing kingfish in the Rip, the stretch of water between Point Nepean and Point Lonsdale, is for you. Just remember to keep an eye out for large ships, adhere to all safety regulations and stay clear of the Marine Parks. Kingfish would have to be the most prized catch of the region.

Toyota LE is something special By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring In a world that’s moving at breakneck speed a five-year old car such as the Toyota 86 can need a freshen-up to keep it in the minds of potential buyers. A clever marketing move is the introduction of limited editions that can take on an aura of exclusivity. Hence the Toyota LE. Only 60, all in a wild orange shade, came Down Under a couple of months back. We’ve just spent a most enjoyable week in one. The Toyota 86 has plenty of other changes under that stunning skin. Genuine sports changes by way of a stiffer Sachs suspension and larger Brembo brakes (four-calliper front, two-calliper rear) than those on the 86 GTS, on which the LE is based. Toyota tells us the styling of the 86 was inspired by the 1965 Toyota 2000GT, a sports model that’s being auctioned these days for more than a million dollars. The black details on the LE set off its wild paint brilliantly. A different design of 17-inch 10-spoke alloys ties in nicely with the body colour and makes it easy to see the big Brembos. Inside the 86 LE there’s a suede dashboard with – of course – orange stitching. The seats and steering wheel get the same treatment. The Toyota/Subaru 2.0-litre flat-four engine was revised in late 2016, lifting it from 200 horsepower to 207 bhp (152 kW if you like metric engine numbers). If you don’t want a six-speed manual, tough luck – that’s all you get in this cool little sports machine. At the same time as the 2016 upgrade, the differential ratio was reduced to get grunt to the road by way of having the engine at higher revs

for the same road speed. Drop the Toyota down a gear or two, give it a bootfull and enjoy the ride – there’s no turbocharger and the engine responds virtually instantly. Handling is exceptionally good and the LE’s new Sachs system is even more responsive than that in the others in the 86 range. Clever design means ride comfort doesn’t really seem any different from the standard Toyota 86.
The front sport seats provide good support but aren’t too aggressive in the shape of the side bolsters. Nevertheless, if your legs and back are not as young as they used to be, you may struggle to get in and out. Noise from the tyres is generally subdued, but some harsh surfaces, particularly concrete and coarse-chip, do increase sound intrusion. Though this isn’t likely to faze a full-on keen driver may we suggest you check this for
