Callea sings city’s praises Things sure have changed since Anthony Callea lived in Werribee. Callea, who shot to fame in 2004 after coming runner-up in Australian Idol, said he had been amazed to see how much the area had changed when he drove into Werribee last week for an exclusive photo shoot with Star Weekly Weekly. The 34-year-old – who went to Corpus Christi Primary School and MacKillop College and worked as a waiter at Raffael’s cafe – said he drove past his family homes and reminisced. “It was such a surreal feeling stopping my car in front of these homes and thinking back to all the times and moments we had there, the memories that will last a lifetime … I was so tempted to knock on the door and see who was living there!” He also remembered performing at the Wyndham Cultural Centre and St Andrew’s Fair, as well as impromptu performances in his family home. “If you lived in Haven Court and were our neighbours, most afternoons you were treated to a concert whether you liked it or not. “My dad set us up a music room with a PA and between me singing, my brother Matt on the electric guitar and my sister Chris on the drum kit, I’m sure not only our neighbours but the entire street copped an ear full of music from our household.” Callea is set to release his seventh album, Aria Number One Hits in Symphony, on September 8, where he has recorded 12 hits – including Bleeding Love, End of the Road and Nothing Compares to You – with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. He promises the album will give listeners goosebumps. “This would have to be the most epic album I have ever recorded,” he said.

A black market of Werribee tip passes has cropped up online. An investigation by Star Weekly revealed a number of residents trying to sell their Refuse Disposal Facility Waste Management passes before they expire on September 30. The passes, which were found on numerous Facebook buy, swap and sell pages, and on Gumtree, were selling for up to $40-$50 for one token, or $80 for two, and most were snapped up within 24 hours of being posted online. Wyndham council includes two tip passes with the rates notice, with the passes clearly stating they are security enabled and cannot be transferred or redeemable for cash. Star Weekly took to Facebook last week to ask residents why they were buying tip passes online. Many said it was a cheaper alternative to paying up-front at the tip. Ilona wrote: “I understand that it costs money to deal with our rubbish, but the tip prices are ridiculous.” Nancy added: “I think all residents who pay rates to the Werribee council should be able to visit the tip for free.” According to the Wyndham council website, tip entry fees start at $30 for a car or station wagon load of rubbish up to one tonne, and go as high as $158 for a ute with a single-axle heaped trailer. Many renters also complained landlords had not passed on the tip tokens. Tenant John wrote: “Our only way as a long-term resident to use the Werribee tip without having to take out a loan or sell our oldest child into slavery is to buy [a pass]” One resident even tried to sell her two tip passes in the Facebook thread. But Wyndham council city operations director Stephen Thorpe stressed that the tip passes were non-transferable, and warned that residents could face prosecution if they’re found using tip passes that are not legally theirs. “While council has not prosecuted anyone for selling tip passes recently, residents should be aware that each pass has a barcode that identifies the specific address it was issued to,” Mr Thorpe said. He said only 28.2 per cent of tip passes issued by the council during 2016-17 were actually used. According to Wyndham council’s waste and litter strategy, the council will reduce the number of tip tokens it issues to one per ratepayer by 2020, and increase the number of free bookable hard waste collections from two to three a year.

Commuters in a fine mess By Alesha Capone More than 3500 fines have been issued to illegally parked vehicles in streets near Wyndham’s train stations in the past 12 months. In the 2016-17 financial year, Wyndham council sent 3574 infringement notices to drivers who illegally parked in streets close to the Werribee, Hoppers Crossing, Manor Lakes, Tarneit and Williams Landing train stations. In comparison, the council issued 2598 parking fines to vehicles illegally parked in these streets during the 2015-16 financial year. The council’s city operations director Stephen Thorpe said the increase in fines could be attributed to two new train stations, Manor Lakes and Tarneit, opening during the time frame. He said the parking infringements handed out by the council usually ranged from $79 to $159, depending on the offence. Mr Thorpe said the council did not issue fines to vehicles parked within the train station’s car parks, as this was the responsibility of Public Transport Victoria. He said the council only issued fines to vehicles which were parked illegally in streets surrounding train stations, such as cars parked on nature strips and across footpaths. “Many of the parking fines we have issued in areas surrounding train stations are as a result of complaints from residents who are frustrated with the issue in their street,” he said. Mr Thorpe said the council “continues to lobby the state government for improvements to public transport services and increased commuter car parking”. “We encourage residents and businesses to make their concerns known to the state government and local state members of

parliament as this helps to build awareness of how important this issue is,” he said. In the past few months, Star Weekly has published several articles highlighting the fact that most carparks at Wyndham’s train stations are filled by early morning on weekdays. A spokeswoman for Public Transport Minister
Jacinta Allan said the Tarneit and Wyndham Vale stations had the largest carparks on the V/Line network, with more than 1000 spaces each. Earlier this year the state government announced plans to build 150 new carparking spaces at the Williams Landing station, with construction due to start on July 31.

Truganina woman Judy Webb is among the many commuters who would like to see more car parks installed at the Tarneit train station. On March 9, Ms Webb received an infringement notice from Wyndham council after she parked her car near the entrance road to the station. Ms Webb said the council’s letter ordered her to pay $93 for parking on a nature strip. But the 75-year-old said she actually left her car in a grassed area facing a paddock, near the access road to the station from Leakes Road. She said she had never parked her car there before, due to ‘no standing’ signs nearby. However, she said that on March 9, the signs had been removed and there were several other cars parked at the spot, leading her to believe the area had been made into a legal parking site. “Due to the fact they [the signs] had been removed, my girlfriend, who was with me, and I said, ‘We must be able to park there’,” she said. After receiving the $93 fine, Ms Webb asked the council to review the infringement due to the lack of ‘no standing’ signs. Unfortunately, the review did not find in her favour and, after getting a letter on June 8 ordering her to pay the fine, Ms Webb did so. She said new ‘no standing’ zone signs have since been installed at the site but, with Wyndham’s fast-growing population, more car parks were needed at its train stations. Plans to build a new station in Tarneit West were at least a decade away, Ms Webb said. “We need more parking at this station now, not in 10 to 15 years time.”

School marks good news
Youths sought over brawl
By Charlene Macaulay A Hoppers Crossing high school is soaring up the charts with its VCE results. Hoppers Crossing Secondary College was ranked as the fifth most improved Victorian school in VCE median study scores over the past five years, according to the Good Schools Guide. Principal Wayne Terrill said the school’s median study score was 22 in 2009. The score jumped to 25 by 2012 and last year student results meant that the score was now at 29.

Last year, the school celebrated after three of its year 12 students – Candice Peart, Erika Bainbridge and Taylor Jacobson-Fisher – received ATAR scores in the 90s. Candice was also named school dux after achieving the school’s highest-ever ATAR of 97.85. Mr Terrill attributed the improvement to a concerted effort to boost literacy and numeracy, particularly at the senior level. Among other initiatives, the school runs specific VCE subject tutoring programs. Previously, students would have to travel into the city to access these lectures. “We really focus on a growth mindset now, the kids are actually now staying back after school and there seems to be that notion and belief that the more effort they put in, the achievements are going to come,� Mr Terrill said. “We’re finding a lot more kids now are

involved in programs that we’re running to help them.� Mr Terrill said the school also had a school improvement policy, where students in years 7-10 could re-sit an assessment task if they’re unhappy with their performance.
“When a kid actually sits an assessment task or a test or hands in an assignment, they can decide that they want to do a better job on that and do a similar test after school on a Wednesday ‌ if they get a better result, we’ll include that in their report.â€?
Wyndham’s criminal investigation unit is on the hunt for a number of teens in relation to an alleged brawl at Pacific Werribee last month. Acting Inspector Peter Bitton said police were reviewing CCTV footage of the brawl, which broke out between a group of 13 teens of Pacific Islander appearance and two other males outside the Urban Diner precinct about 5.30pm on July 17. A 17-year-old male had his bag taken from him during the fight and sustained a broken nose and bruising to his face. A 15-year-old boy has been charged with affray, intentionally causing injury, two counts of unlawful assault and committing an indictable offence while on bail. He has been remanded in custody. Acting Inspector Bitton said police were still investigating and were looking to speak with a number of people in relation to the incident. He said although the fight seemed to be an isolated incident for the shopping centre, the community safety team has been deployed to conduct regular foot patrols around Pacific Werribee. “That sort of behaviour – that public fighting – won’t be tolerated, and they’re serious offences,� he said. “It’s not something we’re going to ignore.� Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Burglary, invasion figures drop By Charlene Macaulay Violent home invasions have more than halved in the past four months, and aggravated burglaries by gangs of youths have all but dried up, according to Wyndham’s top cop. Acting Inspector Peter Bitton said targeted police operations Regnant and Wayward had significantly cut the number of aggravated burglaries across Wyndham in recent months. In particular, he said aggravated burglaries had more than halved since March when, according to the Crime Statistics Agency, 24 were recorded for the month.
Acting Inspector Bitton said police had also observed that groups of youths – who had been largely responsible for the increased aggravated burglary rate earlier this year – had not committed a home invasion since a botched attempt on April 18. He said the rest of the offences were being caused by seasoned burglars, people under the influence of drugs and as a result of family violence. Acting Inspector Bitton said the spate of aggravated burglaries earlier this year had caused a lot of residents to fear for their safety. Crime statistics released earlier this year
revealed a 62.4 per cent surge in aggravated burglaries across the municipality in the 12 months to March 31 – a five-year high for Wyndham. But in the past three months, Operation Regnant has deployed extra police resources – including a police helicopter and dog squad – into overnight patrols across Wyndham, Brimbank and Melton to tackle aggravated burglaries, carjackings and related offences. Police from the north-west metro region have also been conducting Operation Wayward, which involves investigating patterns of offending and chasing up lines of inquiry
across Wyndham, Brimbank, Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay. Most recently, police from Operation Regnant arrested and charged four teenagers over an alleged home invasion and car theft in Melton West on July 21. A 17-year-old Queensland male, 17-year-old St Albans male, 16-year-old Queensland male and 15-year-old Hoppers Crossing resident have been charged with aggravated burglary and theft of motor vehicle. All but the 15-year-old have been remanded in custody. Police are still looking for a fifth offender in relation to the incident.
Hitting the right note These Wyndham students have the music in them. Manor Lakes College is attracting students from other schools in the area to take part in a VET Music Performance course that the school has offered for the past four years. Students are able to complete the specialised course alongside their VCE or VCAL subjects. Year 12 students Kayleigh (guitar), Susana (vocals), Liam (drums), Katya (keyboard) and Mackenzie (bass and vocals) have joined forces in the past 18 months to create pop-rockalternative band Permanent Break. Kayleigh, who attends Hoppers Crossing Secondary College, said the group met on orientation day and “instantly clicked” during a jam session, where they played This Love by Maroon Five. “It was really natural how quickly we got the song together … we gelled.”
The band is currently rehearsing ahead of a Battle of the Bands competition this month. Mackenzie said the group had been working hard to perfect its 20-minute set. “When the audience like it, especially when they remember our compositions from ages ago and they start singing along – that’s the best feeling.” Meanwhile, fellow year 12 guitarist and vocal artist Saskia said she’s spent this year focusing on her stage presence and vocalisation. Earlier this year, Saskia won the W Factor competition at the Weerama festival with her rendition of the Chris Isaak song, Wicked Games. Teacher Ashley Craven said students from Manor Lakes, Hoppers Crossing, Wyndham Central, The Grange, Thomas Carr and Werribee College had taken part in the course. Charlene Macaulay

have always thought of myself as a glass half full person when it comes to living in the City of Wyndham, but sometimes you can be too close to see what you have. Last weekend in a Best of Melbourne - The Suburbs We Love magazine, newish Werribee resident and businessman Kevin Harrington said: “Werribee is the quirkiest place I’ve been. Where else are you within 20 minutes of a big suburban shopping centre, a large and wellequipped arts centre, a country-style main street, a basketball stadium, a fully fledged mansion, an equestrian centre, a racecourse, market gardens, a marina, a safari zoo and a Quest Apartments Hotel [the franchise my wife and I own]?” He is 100 per cent right. While it is not news to those of us who have lived here for many years, it is interesting and refreshing to hear someone articulate the positives, without referencing all the stereotypical negatives about our city. I was seeking an update on the investigation and felt that ratepayers deserved to be kept in the loop. They advise they are currently collating and analysing the data and interview transcripts from all interviewed candidates and hope to release a public report in late August. Great to see the wheels are in motion and an outcome is on the horizon. That is all we have asked for at this stage. Once the findings are released, a whole new discussion will begin. ■

Theft charges
Police arrested a 47-year-old Hoppers Crossing woman in Squatter Court, Werribee last week. On Tuesday, officers charged the woman with theft of a motor vehicle, theft of petrol and resisting arrest. The woman was bailed to appear in court on December 6.

Land earmarked for CFA station By Charlene Macaulay A new station is on the cards for Hoppers Crossing fire brigade. The Country Fire Authority has lodged plans with Wyndham council for a $3.7 million purpose-built fire station on a 5000-square-metre block located on the corner of Derrimut Road and Rippleside Terrace in Tarneit, just under four kilometres away from the current Derrimut Road premises. A decision on the planning application is expected in coming weeks. “CFA is confident this new station will further enhance the Hoppers Crossing firefighters’ ability to protect their community, and hopefully encourage new members to join,” the spokesperson said. “This new station will feature, among other things, four bays for emergency appliances and accommodation for staff and volunteers. “This land was chosen as it provided a central and easily accessible base.”

The Hoppers Crossing Fire Brigade, which celebrates its 40th birthday this year, started out in a small green shed across the road from its current headquarters, which were built in 1988. The Hoppers Crossing brigade has more than 50 members and averages about 1500
call-outs a year, making it one of the busiest CFA stations in the state. The planning application comes at the same time the state government pledged $7.5 million for new stations for the Truganina and Wyndham Vale CFA brigades. Werribee MP Tim Pallas said the funding would be split between the two brigades, with $1.5 million to be put towards the acquisition of land and $2.25 million for the development of the new stations. Construction of the new, permanent stations is expected to be completed by June, 2019.
Crash course for rescuers Imagine a person is trapped inside a car following a car accident. Firefighters and paramedics are working at lightning speed to extricate the person from the car to perform life-saving medical care. This is a common occurrence for both fireys and paramedics, but the split-second decisions that need to be made in these fraught situations can make it hard for the two professions to communicate as well as they could. Werribee CFA rescue crew members and Ambulance Victoria paramedics closed the gap a little last Thursday through a joint training session at the Werribee fire station, centred around road accident rescues. Firefighters and paramedics worked together in a scenario-based session to cut open a car involved in an accident and administer medical treatment. Werribee Fire Brigade captain Michael Wells said the training session was a unique
experience for both emergency services as they regularly worked together on the road but seldom got the chance to train together and learn more about their respective roles. “We all know our roles and responsibilities, but it was about looking at ambulance considerations versus rescue considerations, and understanding what each one’s roles are and sharing information,” he said. “For the ambos, it’s also showing them the complexities of road rescue; it’s not as simple as asking for something and getting it done, or cutting up a car, there’s quite a bit to it due to the complexities of the newer cars we’ve got. “A lot of the ambos didn’t know that, so it was good.” Mr Wells said after the success of last week’s event, the emergency services planned to do more joint training sessions in the future. Council fined for ‘hot spot’
I am a strong supporter and advocate for Wyndham City’s community centres. They provide many and various services such as kindergarten; maternal and child health; adult education; support groups; before and after school care programs; arts, health and lifestyle programs and many others. I have a strong affinity with the Grange Community Centre as I advocated many years ago for the building of the centre and the development of the soccer facilities currently on site. The community, soccer club and Council worked very well together to build this new asset in 2005. The Manager at the time – Maria is still at the centre and I had the pleasure last week to visit Maria and staff for a discussion on how the staff, community and services have progressed over the years. I am told the centre is full to capacity now and while I am happy to see many people using the centre I’m sorry to see others cannot due to high demand. Council is investigating how we can add capacity to this great centre. I hope to visit many other community centres over the coming months and I am sure I will find many services being provided and also many happy users. Regards, Henry Barlow
A “hot spot” at the Werribee tip has landed Wyndham council in hot water. The Environment Protection Authority has fined Wyndham council $7773 for failing to comply with a pollution abatement notice issued in March, 2016, that directed it to bring its methane emissions into line with its EPA licence by the end of November that year. In a statement released last week, the council said although it had “immediately” taken action to address the issues raised by the EPA, the discovery of a “hot spot” – defined by the EPA as hot waste underground with no flames, visible smoke or gaseous emissions – in a tip cell was one of several issues that prevented further action being taken. EPA spokesman John Rees said the environmental watchdog had directed Wyndham council to reduce the steepness of the slopes on a cell of the Werribee landfill, apply half a metre of compacted clay soil cover to seal it and install more landfill gas wells. “The fine was issued when the work was not done within the time required,” Mr Rees said. Wyndham city operations director Stephen Thorpe said the council was in the second stage of a three-stage process to reduce the hot spot temperature. “We are currently preparing for the third stage, which will involve further drilling to confirm that the issue has been resolved,” he said.

High-five for free Wi-Fi Werribee’s CBD is moving into the modern era with two free outdoor Wi-Fi hotspots. Last week Wyndham council announced it would provide free wireless internet within Station Place and the Wedge Street Piazza. Mayor Henry Barlow said the Wi-Fi initiative marked a “milestone for the revitalisation of this area”. “Council chose to install free Wi-Fi in Station Place and the Wedge Street Piazza as these are two of the most important spaces for people to gather in the city centre,” Cr Barlow said. “Free public Wi-Fi is an important component of a modern city centre. “It contributes to the activation of public spaces and has a positive social and economic impact.”
Cr Barlow said the free Wi-Fi was already available at the Werribee library and the Kelly Park Community Centre in Synnot Street. “This is part of our plan to make the heart of Werribee a more inviting and vibrant place for people to visit and work in,” he said. “Ultimately, council’s aim is to extend the free public Wi-Fi, making it available throughout the Werribee city centre.” The free public Wi-Fi in Werribee can be accessed by selecting the WCC_Public network. Steph’s beaut uke Werribee musician Steph Payne jokes that she has a condition called Ukulele Acquisition Syndrome. The ukulele player and singer owns “at least” 10 ukuleles, because different-sized instruments produce diverse sounds. Ms Payne said she decided to learn ukulele a few years ago because she wanted to be able to accompany herself. She was also drawn to the instrument’s accessibility and affordability. “Anyone can play it,” she said. “You can decide which level you want to go to – just strum along or learn about music in-depth.” Ms Payne became so proficient on the ukulele she now teaches weekly lessons at the Old Shire Offices in Werribee.
She also leads the Wyndukes ukulele group, which is based at the Wyndham Arts Incubator, is a member of the Paisley & Plaid folk trio and leads the Willin Wimmin women’s choir in Williamstown. Ms Payne’s weekly ukulele group lessons run on Mondays from 5-5.45pm (children eight years and older), 6-6.45pm (adult beginners) and 7-7.45pm (adults continuing). The cost is $20 a lesson. Council works on cat-astrophe By Alesha Capone Wyndham council is planning to take action to reduce the number of feral and unregistered cats it seizes every year. The council’s draft five-year domestic animal management plan, released earlier this month, said there were 1585 cats impounded in Wyndham during the 2015-16 financial year. Just 10 per cent of the cats were identifiable by a registration tag or microchip. In comparison, out of the 978 dogs impounded in the same period, 82 per cent had a tag or microchip.
The council’s draft animal plan also stated that about three quarters of the cats impounded in Wyndham every year were classified as feral, semi feral or “wild with kittens”. “Semi feral” cats are those which people may feed but do not care for in other ways, such as vaccination and de-sexing. Although the council already runs programs to educate people about responsible cat ownership, the draft plan proposed introducing new strategies to cut the unregistered cat population. These included rolling out a “Who’s for cats?” campaign in Wyndham with fact sheets,

advertising and promotions to encourage people to take “full ownership” of cats, including discount de-sexing, microchipping and vaccination offers. Wyndham’s environment and sustainability portfolio holder Cr Heather Marcus said the council hoped this would lead to an increase in cat registrations in coming years.
She said the council last year offered free pet registrations to owners of pets that have not been registered before, until the next renewal period. “Since we started doing this we have seen an increase of 30 animals per week being registered,” Cr Marcus said. “We are now looking at extending this offer in the hope that it will continue to produce great results.” Public consultation on the draft domestic animal management plan will close at 5pm on Wednesday, August 9. Hair today, aid tomorrow Children attending a Hoppers Crossing early learning centre sported some cool and creative hairstyles in the name of charity last week. On Friday, about 100 youngsters aged from 12 months to five years old joined in a crazy hair day at the Bluebird Early Education centre to help raise funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Federation Australia. Children who took part in the event donated a gold coin to the federation. The centre’s manager Marian Ramis said some of the young people wore colourful hairstyles that looked like unicorns, lizards and even cupcakes. “The children had lots of fun showing off their hairstyles and a bit of a laugh,” she said. Ms Ramis said educators at the centre also took part in the day, including one staff member who put a soft drink bottle in her
hair and styled her tresses to look like liquid pouring out of it. Ms Ramis said the Bluebird Early Education company often took part in community days to raise funds for good causes, including the recent National Pyjama Day for The Pyjama Foundation. Alesha Capone

She now lives in Werribee South and is a nursing supervisor at Williamstown Hospital. She tells Charlene Macaulay the full story. What is your connection to Wyndham? I am from California in the USA … [I] originally came to Australia to work and travel. Before Australia, I worked in the UK. I have now lived in Australia for 17 years and I love it. I have lived in Wyndham off and on for five years. Initially, we lived in Point Cook but moved to Wyndham Harbour when we felt that Point Cook was getting too congested. I love living in Wyndham Harbour. We enjoy walking with the dogs on the beach. I love listening to the waves crashing on a windy day. Bike rides along the foreshore. It is the perfect place to relax and unwind after a long day.
Tell me about your family. I met my husband who is Australian during a girl’s night out at a bar. My working holiday then turned into something permanent. We’ve been together for 15 years. He comes from a large multicultural family and they immediately made me feel welcome. Our kids have four paws and they are very spoilt.

I have worked in the intensive care unit at Footscray and Sunshine hospitals and I currently work at the Williamstown Hospital campus as a nursing supervisor. I really enjoy my supervising job, it gives me the opportunity to interact with a wide variety of people. You never know what your day will bring or what challenges it will hold. I have learned flexibility and to expect the unexpected.

What are some of your hobbies? On my days off, I like going to pilates or yoga classes. We enjoy going on country drives visiting town and a winery or two. I wish VicRoads would repair Duncans Road so that we had a better road leading to Wyndham
Harbour. Between Whites Road and the entrance to the estate, the road is narrow with shoulders full of pot holes. What’s your favourite Wyndham restaurant or cafe, and why? Master Wok in Werribee. We go there on a weekly basis, bring our bottle of wine and enjoy a great meal. For something extra special, we go to Joseph’s at Werribee Mansion. We recently celebrated our wedding anniversary there.

Residents of the Princes Highway area near Hoppers Crossing will ask the Minister for Local Government to intervene and direct Werribee Shire Council to stop the development of multi-storey flats in their area. They claim that the council has acted illegally in not requiring the developer of the flats at 247 Princes Highway to advertise his proposed project.
Two fatal accidents in Bladin St. Laverton, in the past fortnight have sparked calls for major road safety controls to be implemented in Laverton’s main street. And two serious accidents in Morris Rd. Hoppers Crossing, within the past week have also cast doubt about traffic control in that area.
Wyndham’s typical resident is a young worker who earns more than his State counterpart, an Australian Bureau of Statistics census has determined. The 1996 census statistics recorded 73,897 people – 36,976 males and 36,921 females – living in Wyndham.
Family and victims’ support groups have backed a Victorian Government bid to increase the sentences handed out to child killers. The move follows public outrage at the sentence given to a Hoppers Crossing man found guilty of the manslaughter of his de facto’s five-year-old son.

EASY CHOCOLATE FIX My mum is always asking me for easy slice recipes, because she’s always being asked to “take a plate” to some party or bowls club function she’s attending. I swear, her social life is more exciting than mine! My go-to solution is chocolate crunch slice – a simple, one-bowl recipe that has a great texture and crunch and isn’t too sickly sweet. Best of all, the topping can be varied – mostly I’ll melt a block of dark chocolate, add a couple of drops of canola oil and spread it on top. But vanilla or caramel frosting (you can buy this ready-made) work equally well, as does melted white chocolate (with chopped dried cranberries for a festive twist). Thick, fudgy chocolate frosting and colourful, star-shaped sprinkles can make this slice perfect for kids’ birthday parties. As you can see by the photo, I made this slice (for the umpteenth time) at the weekend. Twelve-year-old son could not get enough of it, and hubby thoroughly enjoyed a piece or three with his night-time coffee. CHOCOLATE CRUNCH SLICE 1 cup self-raising flour 1 tsp baking powder 2 tablespoons cocoa 1 cup caster sugar 1 cup desiccated coconut 150g butter, melted 1tsp vanilla essence 1 egg, lightly beaten
Preheat oven to 160°C. Line a 20cm x 30cm baking pan. Sift flour, cocoa and baking powder into a bowl. Stir through all the other ingredients, spoon into pan, flatten and bake for 25 to 30 minutes. Cool for 15 minutes. I’ll leave the topping to your imagination!

SPORT Werribee keeps up the Fair Go tradition Cowlishaw said the men’s team has enjoyed a successful record in the Fair Go Sport rounds. With the team winless at home this season, the Fair Go Sport round might have come at the right time. “We used to back ourselves in at home, but not this year,” Cowlishaw said. “I don’t think we’ve lost too many of the Fair Go Sport games, which is good for us, so hopefully we can keep that up.” On Saturday, the men’s team will host Monash University at the Werribee Hockey Centre from 2pm, while the women’s team will play Monash at 3.30pm.

an interesting 24 hours at the Werribee Park Golf Club at the end of last week, president Bill Kennedy handed in his resignation over the process of determining the location of the new members’ lounge. It came down to a principle for Bill; and he deemed his position as untenable and resigned. He has been at the helm for three very productive years for the club but the decision was his alone. Graham Roper – the club captain – has been named as the interim president while the dust settles.

Tigers cheer unlikely win By Lance Jenkinson Werribee Tigers produced a three-point win over Port Melbourne that was full of guts and determination in the Victorian Football League at Rams Arena on Saturday. It was a back-to-the-wall Tigers who arrived in Craigieburn on Sunday, having gone into the contest on the back of successive heavy defeats and seen their top-eight spot momentarily taken away after the results from 24 hours earlier. Down two rotations with injuries to Isaac Miller and Josh Corbett and trailing by 17 points at half-time, it seemed like it was just not going to be the Tigers’ day. Even as late as time-on of the last quarter, the Tigers appeared to be headed for an honourable loss, but like so often this season, the travelling band in black and gold found a way to make it an unforgettable trip. At the 23-minute mark, a nice team build-up play resulted in a Tom Gribble goal, reducing the margin to just two points. Port Melbourne clicked into game-saving mode, but did not execute it the way coach Gary Ayres would have liked. On three occasions, the Borough turned the ball over, and Werribee finally made them pay. Dashing half-back Dane McFarlane scooped up a scrubber kick, pumped the ball long to Jed Anderson, who, in turn, found the chest of Cameron Zurhaar for a set shot 35 metres out on no angle. Zurhaar went back and calmly slotted it home for a goal. Port Melbourne would have one last chance to win the game with key forward Jordan Lisle pulling his set shot to the left and the ball going out of bounds in a dangerous position. Two balls up followed a boundary throw in, but the Tigers onballers, aided by some neat ruck work from the experienced Todd Goldstein, managed to kill the ball and not give the Borough a shot on goal, even with the ball nestled deep into their forward 50. When the siren sounded, Werribee players embraced en masse to acknowledge their most spirited win of the season, while the Borough players slumped to the ground in disbelief, wondering how they blew a handy time-on lead. The Tigers kicked an impeccable 17.3 for the game, with goal sneak Lindsay Thomas snaring four and Gribble, Zurhaar, Goldstein and Lachie Hansen, who took nine marks, adding two each. Goldstein was named best-on-ground for his tireless work in the ruck, with 58 hit-outs to go with 16 possessions.

Cook will be the next senior team to join the ranks of the WRFL after members voted to leave the VAFA and follow in the footsteps of Werribee Districts. The Bulldogs juniors have been in the WRFL since the inception of the club. Many people still wonder why their seniors did not follow when they were established. Only those at the coalface know the real reasons, but that is not important now. The unofficial word is they will join as a division 2 club, but that is yet to be confirmed.

The WRFL finals are now only three weeks away and the big question is whether anyone is going to be able to match the might of Deer Park. There seems to be no stopping the rampaging Lions as they head for their fifth straight premiership. Kwame McHarg jumped off a plane from an OS holiday last Saturday and went straight back to where he left off. Coach Marc Bullen has an embarrassment of riches to choose from within his list. Wyndham sides cop a hiding By Lance Jenkinson Wyndham’s top-flight Western Region Football League copped a triple whammy on Saturday. Hoppers Crossing, Werribee Districts and Wyndhamvale suffered heavy defeats on a bleak weekend for the local sides. For Hoppers Crossing, a 55-point loss to four-peat premier Deer Park at John McLeod Oval proved costly, as it dropped out of the top three. The Warriors gave up a 50-point headstart to the Lions on a windswept day when the toss was all important and never recovered. With three rounds to go, the Warriors can still overtake third-placed Sunshine Kangaroos, who they trail for a double chance position on percentage. But they cannot afford another slip up, making Saturday’s home game against second-placed Spotswood a must-win. Werribee Districts could be out of the top five by Saturday night. The Tigers’ hold on fifth spot weakened significantly following a 47-point loss to Sunshine Kangaroos at Kinder Smith Reserve. With sixth-placed Altona visiting bottomof-the-ladder Wyndhamvale this Saturday and Werribee Districts having to host league leader Deer Park at Soldiers Reserve, the prospects of the Tigers keeping hold of their place in the top five are not good. Wyndhamvale suffered a 44-point loss to Albion at JR Parsons Reserve. The Falcons have three rounds to make up a game and percentage on second-last Caroline Springs, otherwise the wooden spoon is heading their way.
In division 2, Manor Lakes has impressed in recent times, but Saturday’s 49-point loss to premiership favourite North Footscray at Hansen Reserve showed there is still a gap between the best and the rest. Manor Lakes will entertain Newport Power at Howqua Reserve on Saturday. In division 3, Wyndham Suns piled on the goals in a 123-point annihilation of Braybrook at Pennell Reserve. The Suns can seal a top two finish when they host cellar dweller Laverton at Goddard Street Reserve on Saturday. Tarneit’s double chance hopes were all but extinguished in a 17-point loss to Sunshine Heights at Ainsworth Reserve. Lowly Sanctuary Lakes mounted a late comeback, but went down by 10 points to North Sunshine at Featherbrook Reserve. In the VAFA division 3, Westbourne Grammarians all but stamped their ticket to the finals with a 44-point win over Richmond Central at the Westbourne School Ground. Agon Bahtiri kicked three goals for the Warriors on a day when goals were hard to come by. Point Cook is slowly slipping out of finals contention. It suffered a nine-point loss to Power House at Saltwater Reserve, leaving it down in eighth spot. The Bulldogs will need to get back on track with a victory away to the winless South Melbourne Districts on Saturday, while it will be all about maintaining the rage for Westbourne when it visits Swinburne University in a third-versus-fourth showdown.

The positives far outweighed the negatives for Hoppers Crossing in a 0-0 draw with Altona City in Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 2 top-of-the-table clash at Grange Reserve on Saturday. The Reds lost no ground in the race for the title, still trailing City on goal difference with five rounds to play. The Reds and City strengthened their promotion bids by creating further space between themselves and third-placed Hume United, which suffered a shock loss to Westvale to trail the top two by five points. Reds coach Shaun Barbara said the Hume United result made his own side’s outcome sweeter. Of the two goalkeepers, it was Reds custodian Kieron Sharratt who had to do more work, a reflection of City’s strength in general play. “He was outstanding,” Barbara said. Hoppers Crossing defenders Ben Sardelic, James Daly and Fab Albuquerque withstood the heat the same way. Barbara reckons his team was deserving of a point, despite the better chances falling to the City strikers. “We worked our socks off and the boys put in a really good effort,” he said. “I’m happy and proud.” Hoppers Crossing faces another stern test when it travels to Corio on Saturday.
